Pretty beautiful

We contacted them the day before for a boat tour, which lasted nearly 3hrs. As it was low season we were alone and did enjoy a wonderful tour with Marcos who is extremely passionate about the Ombués. He is a great source of knowledge of the Ombués and a wonderful guide. Even though our Spanish is very limited he took to the time and efforts to explain in simple terms the beauty and uniqueness of the area. We learned so much about the Ombués and what is means to keep nature in a balance. Furthermore, Marcos is such a friendly and humorous person that the whole trip will be a remarkable experience and memory of our our time in Uruguay. It’s a must do if your interested in nature and what to disfrutar something special. Thanks Marcos !

(Translated by Google) Excellent!!! A short and beautiful adventure. The encounter with hundreds of years made green and dreams, woody and latticework the ombú, here Marcos guide and custodian, shows us how it becomes hollow and new when it grows, shade for the crowns, pure wood and good firewood, between 300 and 1000 years of storms and suns and the countryman's eaves on the coast of the valizas river, and the birds, the mullets jumping around our boat and roseate spoonbills, body shots and real shots, all tame and beautiful. Thank you for taking care of this paradise and even more thank you for preserving it. Thanks 🙂 (Original) Excelente!!! Gracias 🙂

(Translated by Google) We did this walk with Marcos and another man whose name I don't remember, after making a telephone reservation, although at this time there are enough places to go. We depart by boat from Route 10 and the Arrollo Valizas, to Laguna de Castillos. There you go down to Monte de Ombúes de Los Olivera. Marcos shows you the different trees, telling you the peculiarities of each one, how they grow, how they take care of them, etc. It tells you where you can take fun photos and has a special gift for entertaining children. Then you cross by boat to the municipal ombúes mountain that is opposite, on the other side of the stream, here the route is smaller and you can see a mountain of ombúes without intervention of man and livestock. And it ends by returning to the starting point on the boat, watching, in our case because we did the tour in the afternoon, how the sun goes down. The route is beautiful, super quiet, they show you the different birds that can be seen along the route. And the arrival at Mount Ombues with the Castillo Lagoon in the background is beautiful. Super recommendable ride, we loved it and we all enjoyed it a lot!

(Translated by Google) We went to visit this place for a walk. The departure point is located on the side of the road, by the Valizas stream (Rocha Department), where there are some houses and stalls. From there, a guide takes you by boat, taking you on a tour of the lagoon, while you spot birds: storks, eagles 🦅, flamingos, chaja, among others! Upon reaching the forest, you walk for about 20 minutes. It feels like something out of a storybook, a charming place, with lush vegetation of ombues, butias, and coronillas. If you love nature, you can't miss this place!

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Nice place to visit.
Joan L — Google review
Located in the Maldonado Department of southeastern Uruguay, the bridge spans Uruguay's Laguna Garzón and it’s an essential connection between Rocha and Maldonado counties. Previously cars were using a small 2-vehicle ferry that required daylight and good weather to operate. And now, about 1000 vehicles are crossing it daily. Inaugurated in 22 December 2015, the bridge was designed by a famous local architect Rafael Viñoly. The construction is tall enough for ships to pass below. It was created with 16 circular concrete pillars placed 20 meters (65 feet) apart and this unusual circular bridge has a 202-meter (663-foot) ring. Looking down from the bridge, visitors have a great view on a coastal lagoon in an ecologically protected area of Maldonado region. The shape of Laguna Garzón Bridge is not simply the result of a unique artistic vision, it's very practical too. Its two semi-circular one-way sections force drivers to slow down and take in the view to provide an opportunity to enjoy panoramic views to an amazing landscape, including crosswalks that allow pedestrian access to either the inner or outer sidewalks of the circle. * Some photos courtesy of Internet. Thanks!
Dinh T — Google review
A vehicle traveling across the bridge covers about 115 meters more than it would on a straight-line bridge. Scaled to 100,000 vehicles, this results in approximately 11,500 km of extra driving, consuming over 8,000 liters of fuel and releasing more than 18 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere. While the design intends to harmonize with nature (believe me it does not), the additional fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions somewhat contradict its environmentally conscious image.
Gürkan B — Google review
It is just a bridge. But why not make more bridges this much fun?
Rob H — Google review
Unique and beautifully designed bridge. Must see.

Beautiful bridge, specially at night since it's LED-lit. There is a parking patch right next to it where you can just stop and do some stargazing.

It's a nice bridge, but is not practical at all. I drove there trying to use the route 10 and when I got there, the route after the bridge was in so bad condition that I had to came back to Jose Ignacio to get the route 9...

As far as bridges go, this is a cool one. Not like the iconic one in Sydney or SF but if you happen to be in the area, you might as well drive on it.

Bodega Garzón

Winery
Hotel
Bodega Garzón is a stunning winery and restaurant offering breathtaking vineyard views, cellar tours, and wine tastings featuring a variety of red, white, and sparkling wines. Visitors can indulge in the Cooking Experience which includes a tour of the winery followed by a hands-on meal preparation session. The architecture and sustainability efforts at the winery are highly impressive. Guests rave about the Albarino wine and enjoy delicious meals with picturesque views.
What an amazing place, with its impressive architecture, incredible facilities, and efficient wine-making processes. Similarly, the culinary production is outstanding. On top of all that, the excellent service and friendly staff make it even better. If you’re in the area, don’t hesitate to visit. Many thanks to everyone who made my visit so wonderful.
Juan V — Google review
Nice location but by far below expectations, those price would require a higher quality. So many waiters and a mediocre service. Top olive oil surprisingly above expectations!
F Z — Google review
The views and esthetics of the building and property are amazing, but we weren’t impressed with the tour we went on. We signed up for the Spanish tour but when we arrived they said only English & Portuguese were available (in Uruguay!), they seemed a bit disorganized, started late, and didn’t have the depth of information or wine tasting we are used to receiving on a tour. Overall it wasn’t very professional and I don’t think it was worth the long drive on mostly dirt roads to get there.
Colette F — Google review
Overpriced and overrated. We drove 1h extra to visit this place. When you arrive there is a guarded fence when they ask your name and if you are on the list. So unnecessary. The staff was amazing. Kind and warm. But with this kind of restaurant i would expect top notch service. Empty glasses were left on the table far too long. We had 2 empty glasses and 1 with wine each at one point. Food was ok. But not up to our expectation. I dont mind paying for for good food and wine but this was simply insulting! Unless you want to play big shot and be seen with wannabe posh people I would avoid…
Justine P — Google review
The experience offered is elite level, the chef and team are amazing, the sommelier is quite prepared, facilities are incredible and the view from the restaurant and fire kitchen are unbelievable. Totally worth it.
Ricardo W — Google review
My recent visit to Bodega Garzón in Garzón was an absolute delight! From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the stunning scenery and the warm hospitality of the staff. The tour itself was informative and engaging, providing a fascinating glimpse into the world of winemaking at Bodega Garzón. A special thanks in this regard to our guide, Emiliano. Excellent is not enough to describe your knowledge and how he conducted our group. The wine tasting elevated the experience as well. Each sip was a revelation, showcasing the exceptional quality and unique character of their wines. The pairing with cheese, bread, and olives perfectly complemented the flavors, creating a truly memorable culinary journey. I left Bodega Garzón feeling both informed and deeply satisfied. If you're looking for an unforgettable wine experience in Uruguay, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary.
Gabriel D — Google review
Some information that might be useful: -You MUST have a reservation to one of their experiences in order to enter this place. A couple hundred meters from the main buildings there's a fence with a guard that will block you if you don't have one. They will not allow you to just show up to buy a bottle wine, or take pictures. Also, internet connection there is quite bad and it'll be a hassle to make a reservation on the spot. -They are NOT pet friendly. The guard told us that we could enter if we made a reservation on the spot but our dog wouldn't be allowed to leave the car, even though some of the experiences they offer are outdoors. Go figure. -If you really want to visit but have some questions, contact them very early on because they take a long time to answer. We tried calling, email and Instagram, they answered one of our questions over IG after 3 days.
Leonardo S — Google review
A fantastic place, both for its modern architectural design harmoniously integrated into the landscape, and for its exceptional wines. The culinary experience is equally remarkable. A highly recommended destination.

Playa Vik Jose Ignacio

Beaches
Playa Vik Jose Ignacio is a luxurious and modern hotel that opened in 2009, offering refined quarters, a gym, a restaurant, and an outdoor pool. It is situated on the coveted point of Playa Mansa with a stunning 75-foot infinity pool made of Uruguayan black Absolute Nero granite overlooking the ocean. The internationally acclaimed architect Carlos Ott designed this glamorous hotel. Guests can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, excellent service at La Susana restaurant, and well-kept surroundings.
My stay at Playa Vik José Ignacio was nothing short of magical. From the moment I arrived, I was in awe of the architecture—this place is an absolute architectural marvel. Sleek, art-filled, and effortlessly sophisticated, it’s truly a design lover’s dream. I stayed in the Fuerteventura Suite, which overlooks both the infinity pool and the ocean. Waking up to that view felt like living inside a dream. The bathtub alone deserves its own mention—spacious & sculptural. At night, the pool becomes pure magic—glimmering with twinkling lights that reminded me of a Rolls-Royce starlight ceiling. It truly felt like the stars had descended into the water. As someone with dietary restrictions, I was thrilled to find that everything at the hotel is gluten-free (except for a cute little “gluten corner” at breakfast that made me smile). The food was delicious, nourishing, and beautifully presented. The staff made the experience even more memorable. Always smiling, kind, and eager to help—they really make you feel at home. Walking along the beach each day was deeply soothing, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover Vik Bahía just a few minutes away by foot. I visited their wellness center, The Shack, and loved every moment there. Although La Susana was closed during my visit, everyone I’ve spoken to insists it’s the place to go—so I’ll definitely be back to experience it. Highly recommend Playa Vik to anyone seeking beauty, serenity, and inspiration in one of the most special corners of the world.
Altha H — Google review
I desperately wanted to love this hotel but despite the great futuristic design, beach front location and spacious suites , it really felt like the property was neglected and only had a few staff members for the whole place (often resulting in whole areas being unattended), as well as ongoing construction work while we were there. Furthermore, our 1,000$ a night suite had a broken air conditioning system and the heating couldn’t be turned off either so it got to the point where we couldn’t stay inside without the front door open to let air in. Things got worse as on the second evening the blackout blinds in our room stopped working and it turned out they had been disabled by the staff earlier that day without anyone telling us. Thankfully another suite next door was available for us to move into. I’ve attached photos of both rooms but also of the lack of attention to detail when it comes to keeping the hotel at a level where it’s worth the price. Also: I’d love to see more options on the breakfast menu(so far only eggs available) and in general food quality should be improved. Gym needs renewing too. Equipment is rusty and very old. What I liked was the sunsets over the pool, the layout of the suites, the quality of bathrobes/ slippers / toiletries provided and how nice the staff were , you can tell they work hard.
Kristina H — Google review
This is a luxury boutique hotel perfect for couples and art lovers. This amazing place has great views from the swimming pool over Playa Mansa in José Ignacio, where you will enjoy an exceptional sunset everyday. Friendly staff and excellent experience concierge department! Must go!

It was the best one week holiday in Jose Ignacio, they served healthy breakfast , very friendly staff, we have 2 massages each, it was wonderful, lovely sandy beach, couple days of raining but it make the place more romantic, last night of the sunset was Marvellous. Beaches
Playa Mansa José Ignacio is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets and the nostalgic absence of the once beloved hostel at the tip, featuring bunk beds, live music, drinks, and stoves. However, a classic that stands the test of time is "La Susana." This beach holds its own among other popular destinations in Uruguay with its serene ambiance and fewer crowds compared to the peninsula and barra. It is known as one of Uruguay's finest beaches, offering a tranquil experience to visitors.

Museo del Mar

Museum
Specialty Museums
Museo del Mar is a natural history museum dedicated to marine life and maritime artifacts. It houses an extensive collection of marine fauna specimens, seashells, whale bones, and other relics from the sea. The museum also features a pirate exhibit, adding an element of adventure to its offerings. Visitors can expect to see bleached specimens preserved in formaldehyde, showcasing the charm of the ocean's creatures.
It's a beautiful museum, yes a bit old, but it contains an enormous amount of skeletons, informations and much else that you rarely see anywhere else. It really does have a lot of things, trust me, even the most unexpected ones. Highly recommended, you can easily spend a couple of hours reading through the descriptions.
Simone U — Google review
Nice surprise! A large collection of sea life and historical objects. Regarding tickets: no cards accepted, only cash.
Marcelo C — Google review
Slightly morbid and grotesquely charming. What a wonderful place to spend a few hours. Many of the specimens are bleached by years in formaldehyde and some unrecognisable as creatures, let alone fish, but this is part of the joy of this place. Honestly. It’s a rambling shared personal love of the ocean and all things both in it, and to do with it. This museum has displays of bakelite radios, picnic sets, clothing and the music of the day, that day being early to mid twentieth century. There are quirky little corners and spaces where you’ll get lost in memories, not necessarily to do with the sea. And there’s music playing constantly. Ravel, Rodgers and Hammerstein, I swear a bit of Vivaldi. This place is just weird. I loved it. And do take the time to see the insect display across the road.

This museum was AWESOME! Great for kids and adults. There are 4 museums included in the ticket, I loved them all, and my boyfriend who isn't a huge museum person really loved the museum of memories, which shows old packaging and memorabilia from the country/area. It was 250 pesos per person which I found good value, there is a great deal of information and specims on show. We are English speakers and whilst most of the explanations were in Spanish, the highlights had English explanations too. There is free WiFi so we could Google translate anything else we wanted.
Jos C — Google review
It costs 300 uruguayan pesos per peson (ONLY CASH) it is much bigger than it looks like if you really want to read everything, it might take you up to 3 hours. Ideally for kids. But if you are not into museums, I feel that it's not worth the trip from punta del este
Kris R — Google review
Our expectations were high for this place. When we got there, though, we learned that what they do there was far beyond what we even thought was possible. The collection of sea relics they have there is astonishing. There is also an insectary, which is impressive. Other than that, the staff is very kind and the dogs that warmly welcomed us upon our arrival made the experience even more especial. I strong recommend paying the museum a visit.
Guilherme C — Google review
Hidden among the silver fir trees of the Maldonado bar is this unexpectedly well-stocked museum, in which you will find a wide variety of items on display, from marine fauna and flora, history of the Uruguayan coast beaches, ancient objects and even a insectary. It has space for children and access to bathrooms in acceptable conditions. The ticket price includes access to all facilities.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Nestled in the stunning Lavalleja region of Uruguay, Salto del Penitente is a captivating destination that showcases nature's beauty through its impressive waterfall and serene mineral pools. This large state park offers visitors an array of trails that lead to breathtaking mountain views, small waterfalls, and inviting natural pools perfect for a refreshing dip. Adventurous souls will find plenty to do here, from rock climbing to horseback riding, making it an ideal spot for thrill-seekers.
Fabulous views. The drive is amazing. If you love the outdoors a must visit. Pack a picnic and spend a few hours.
Aida P — Google review
Our visit to Salto del Penitente was nothing short of an adventure! With six friends, we explored this breathtaking spot, and it definitely delivered on excitement. The highlight was the ropeway—an exhilarating ride that added a rush of adrenaline to the scenic beauty surrounding us. One thing to note: the network is unreliable, so carry cash for payments. While cards are accepted, if you need to do a bank transfer, you’ll have to connect to Wi-Fi from a nearby location where you book the ropeway. The staff handling the ropeway were very helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable. For food, the Parador restaurant is a great stop, offering a solid menu with good options. It’s the perfect place to recharge after your adventures. However, if you're heading to Agua del Penitente, be extra cautious—the road is slippery. Unfortunately, we witnessed someone take a serious fall, which was a stark reminder of how important it is to watch your step in these rugged areas. Despite the few challenges, this place is packed with adventure, making it a fantastic destination for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. Highly recommended for those looking for an exciting and scenic getaway!

One of the best nature spots in the country. Beautiful waterfall that runs through a rock channel into a pond with hills all around. Great spot for a picnic, to relax, or do some of the activities they offer.

With a beautiful lake and wonderful waterfall, Salto del Penitente is a gorgeous site to visit while in Uruguay. The hike to the different locations on the site is short, yet a bit steep to go to the waterfall. There are also zipline attractions in the site, though a very short glide.

Beautiful place, full of nature, amazing landscape, great for adventurous people, beautiful sightseeing. Great for families, not accessible for people on wheelchairs. There's food and shelter. It has a couple of attractions like zipline and others. Not dangerous at all.

Sumit G — Google review
This beach on the eastern (Atlantic Ocean) side of Punta del Este's long peninsula has rougher water, as reflected in the name Playa Brava (Fierce Beach). It’s wide, and has good sections of firm, packed sand. The beach stretches for nearly 5 km from the southwestern end at Los Dedos (Hand Sculpture) to the northeastern end at an isthmus in El Placer. The beach is on the ‘rougher’ side and features larger waves than the Mansa side.

Everything was beyond perfect! We went there for my partner birthday and they paid attention to every single detail. The views were amazing and the breakfast as well

I have been to Punta many times, so finally thought I need to test the famous Enjoy hotel. Location is great (right opposite a great stretch of beach and in proximity to many good restaurants). Room was modern, clean and appealing. Service at breakfast was a bit lackluster. Lots of gambling Brazilians in the hotel, you need to like that. Been there, done it, Moving back to The Grand Hotel, I think.
Sven — Google review
Loved the views and attention to detail from the staff. Place is clean and has a great location. Easy to walk across to the beach. The morning breakfast buffet was something I will not repeat. I love my coffee robust and my food hot and tasty. We traveled out for our morning breakfast and coffee every day after the first days experience. The plumbing in the room has issues. The front door would not close easy. Then wouldn't lock shut. Beds are ok. I did get a kick out of the croupiers. Almost forgot to mention the views from the balcony are awesome!!! Came back today a year and a half later. I forgot to mention the casino is fun and the crap dealers were awesome to chat with! Upgrading my stars!!!

Great view and staff's attention to detail. The location is excellent, and the space is tidy. It is simple to cross to the beach. Really liked the lobby's and our room's modern design. This location has my endorsement.
Brunosl — Google review
Rooms are old and dirty. Even the upgraded rooms have stained carpet and old disgusting linens. They really don't clean after each guest at the restaurant either. Staff is inconsiderate and unwelcoming. Stayed twice here for the location and the indoor pool, but both stays were unpleasant. I guess they can get away with charging high prices for a sub-par hotel because of the location.

Sights & Landmarks
The Hand, a significant beach sculpture in Punta del Este, was created by Mario Irarrázabal in 1982. Constructed with iron and cement, the large concrete hand protrudes from Playa Brava's sands and has become a well-known landmark. The magnetic attraction of this monument draws thousands of visitors annually who climb its digits or take pictures with it. It won first prize at a monumental art competition and is located southeast of the bus station.
It is kind the trademark of punta del este uruguay. It is probably the most popular place in punta del este uruguay. So i visited there and it did not disapointed me. I would be say the Sculpture is amazing. The bonous would be the beach. I would say it two in one deal. To keep it a memorable puta del este, there would be nothing better than this. So you could easily spend the day here, as there are some other beach nearby and a lot food option of your choice.

Extremely crowded, we arrived at around 12pm and the crowd was huge so it was hard to take good pics of it. There was a line at first but then people stopped respecting it and it got crazy lol. Still nice to see it, though.

Is a visit to “the Fingers” touristy and overcrowded? Yes. Is it also a must-do when in Punte del Este? Absolutely. Go, take a selfie and give the world the peace symbol or whatever finger fits your mood.

Puerto de Punta del Este is a vibrant and evolving port that has become a hub for both locals and tourists. Over the years, it has transformed from a seasonal destination to a thriving area with permanent residents and essential infrastructure. The port offers various activities for visitors, including bus tours that showcase the diverse landscapes of the region, such as beach towns and inland areas. Additionally, tourists can explore attractions like the Carlos Paez Vilaro studio and museum.
The port is a place where many different people and groups can enjoy themselves from morning till night. My family and I have been visiting the place since the 1980's and seen incredible development and transformation of what used to be a very short tourist season. Now with a more permanent population and corresponding infrastructure, the port has come into its own for residents and visitors alike. Great for people of all ages to walk, for dining, sight seeing (boat tours), just hanging out to take in the marine air and sun, and of course to buy fresh fish and fruits de mer.

Took bus tour. Was great got to see the beach towns vs the inland area. See how that homes change. Being a peninsula, there is soot in town where it appears as an island with water in all 4 sides. Also went to the Carlos Paez Vilaro studio and museum. Excellent highly recommend. Some loca interestingl sites were pointed out and the food was really good.

This is a wonderful place. Not only you can enjoy the amazing views of punta del este, have a delicious fresh bite in one of the many restaurants next to the water or take a boat to one of the close by islands (isla gorriti and isla de lobos) but also you can see a beautiful display of sea agles and sea lions being fed by the fishermans who along the day clean their fresh catch (you can also buy fresh sea food) and throw the remains into the water creating a dinamic and amazing "dance" of these beautiful wild animals flying and swimming around the bay to eat.. This is a perfect example of harmony and beauty between the economical interests of a city and the wild animals that inhabit the surrinding areas. It is a perfect win-win ecosystem! And an amazing spectacle!!

An excellent place or marina Good boat services and repairs Gas station over there for them From that part departures tourist boats to Gorriti Island and to Lobos Island Also fish boats It is common to see sea lions over the port as they are part of the family of the port. Additionally, it provides a safe environment for children if supervised by an adult.

Long beach and has lots of mirador stops as indicated on google maps. You can walk on the streets to view the nice buildings and apartments that have amazing gardins (flowers and trees). It feels like they are competing for the best gardin of flowers. The beach has lots of washrooms along the way. It was a nice walk from the road and I would enter the different beach entrances to see what they built as a malacon view or sometimes statues.

Very good experience at this winery. People took time to explain what they sre doing and tasting was well narrated. Food was may be okay, but overpriced. Typically, you will pay up for a kick at such places, but we were underwhelmed with all dishes and they appeared to us quite bland. Surprisingly the cheaper Tenant Cemento was better tasting vs 3 times more expensive one. Chardonnay 2015 was not good for $27. All prices are in the US$. App for $18, mains for @$40, deserts aare for $15. Wines are starting at @$40. Interesting point, they have caviar service with Champaign....very unusual, full spread goes for $375.

Just an incredible place. Beautiful setting in the middle of rolling hills. Unfortunately that's where it all ends. Tour was less than interesting. Then worse was the wine tasting. How you can possibly have someone who knows nothing about your wines. Nor speaks clear Spanish or English be the person who serves your wines to your visitors. Mine you this is not a cheap experience. Truly a shame!! We were sat in a beautiful setting. Then our wines served all the same time. No explanation, no personally, no interaction nothing. We were 4 people and only given appetizers for 3. Ridiculous attention and you might as well bring a bag of potato chips for what you get. The only feed back and interest was when we approached the bar and started talking to the girl behind counter. She told us more and let us try other wines. Which we ended up buying. Sorry, because of our experience. I can not recommend anyone waste their time nor money at Vina Eden.

The outdoor tasting area boasts stunning views that enhance the experience while enjoying delicious local cuisine like exquisite roasts.
We did the tour and wine tastings today December 5-2024. The tour is fun not to long but you have to climb up a not to steep of a hill and some rocky terrain. But on to the wine tastings. We enjoyed the wines, all four that we tried, super delicious. We also had some cheese and meets with some artisan oil and the fresh artisan baked bread was awesome also. Ernesto was our tour guide and he did a fabulous job of making us feel at home. The 3 dogs they have up there are friendly even though they bark a bit and chase you as you drive up the hill. But as you can see in the pics they loved hanging around people. Anyhow great place with awesome wine! Definitely a must for any wine connoisseur!

We did a tour and wine tasting with Fiorela and it was fantastic! The area for wine-tasting is outdoors with a spectacular view. Fiorela gave us information in English which was greatly appreciated. Communication with them through WhatsApp had a fast response time. My only suggestion would be to give more directions on how to access the place from the main road. We figured it out, but wouldn’t have minded a bit of info beforehand since we had to open two gates ourselves.
Corrine K — Google review
The views are nice, and the staff are friendly, but the experience here is not remarkable. The olive oil is great. The wine is ok, the food is ok, and the facilities are quite basic: a simple carport type overhang and some picnic tables. The entire facility is somewhat temporary construction, including the bathrooms. All of that is inconsistent with the high prices charged. Do not recommend.
E. F — Google review
We booked for a visit, tasting and lunch for 12:30pm. We had to wait an hour… The visit never happened! The view is stunning, wine was ok but the lunch was not up to the price. It wasn’t fresh. We had to complain otherwise they were charging us for the full price while we did not get the visit + we got the wine but no one to explain what we were drinking. A bit disappointed but stunning view.

Visitors can enjoy simple yet delicious food while taking in the scenery. The museum also includes a cinema room where guests can watch a short film about Carlos Paez Vilaro's adventurous life, along with some of his art on display.
Beautiful museum. Although the museum is small it’s still worth to see it from the inside. Beautiful view that reminds me of Greece. We had luck on the day, it was sunny and the sky was very blue which made it prettier. I bought the tickets online (viator website) and when i got there at around 1:20pm there was no line, which surprised me. The ticket was 15 dollars online, but it was worth it because there was no line.

What an amazing property. We didn’t stay in the hotel, but we were able to walk the grounds by visiting the museum and eating at the restaurant whilst we enjoyed the sunset ceremony. The drive from Montevideo took 2 hours, but didn’t feel like that at all as the views kept getting better and better the further we kept going. Then boom - views for days. I have no words for how beautiful and ambitious this whole place is. We got there just in time as they were about to close. Right after we finished walking the grounds, we found a table right outside that was perfectly located with a view of the sunset. We had just gotten our food as the sunset ceremony was about to begin. Let me tell you something. Hearing Carlos Páez Vilaró talk about the sun and thanking it with the beautiful words he used got me all verklempt. Sure did end up sitting there with tears of joy as the sun fully went down. We went to town on the pizza and salad we got after finishing our cocktails. Man, that pizza was perfection. The second we left the property, I told myself I’d be back.

A Hidden Gem with Major Flaws I recently visited Casa Pueblo, and while the architecture is stunning and the location breathtaking, the overall experience was disappointing. The entrance fee of $14 per person feels steep, especially if you just want to grab a meal without visiting the museum. Unfortunately, the lunch experience was far from enjoyable—think more culinary mystery than local flavor. Toilets without soap or water? Check. A friendly yet unprofessional staff? Double check. And the terrace? Let’s just say it had some “surprises” under the tables. It’s a shame that such an iconic place isn’t being maintained properly. If you’re after beautiful art and architecture, Casa Pueblo is a must-see, but be prepared for a few unexpected quirks!
Gabriela R — Google review
It‘s alright. Way too crowded though, it was hard to move. Why not put a cap on the number of visitors?! Took away all the fun of this really nice museum.

Stopped here on a day trip for photo ops. Definitely worth the stop. Would I pay to come and see this all by itself, probably not.
Kimberly Q — Google review
Sadly we arrived by bus on a tour from the ship. The driver parked down the shore and was rushing us. I needed at least 30-60 minutes here just to take in the architecture. I never made it inside the property but what I saw through the gates , behind the guard, looked amazing. I will have to return not on a rushed bus tour .

(Translated by Google) The Cerro Arequita area is a destination with great recreational and tourist potential, which could offer a unique experience to its visitors. Unfortunately, the current administration does not uphold this value. The park ranger responsible for the area demonstrates an uncooperative attitude and, in many cases, acts on personal grounds that end up affecting the visit. The restrictions imposed—such as the two-hour limit on the area and the requirement to leave by 5:00 PM, even when it's still bright outside—are arbitrary and without clear justification. These regulations, coupled with the lack of consistency in communicating schedules and rules, generate discomfort and discouragement among visitors. Instead of promoting respect for the environment through education and community building, the choice is to impose rigid rules that restrict the opportunity to enjoy the park in a calm and responsible manner. Another worrying aspect is the restrictive stance toward outdoor sports activities, such as climbing, slacklining, and hiking. Instead of promoting these sustainable practices that connect people with nature and foster a culture of sport and respect for the environment, they are discouraged without solid technical foundations. It has even been argued that equipping climbing routes harms the mountain, without any evidence or studies to support this claim. These types of decisions not only limit the responsible use of the space, but also go against the development of an active community committed to the natural environment. Furthermore, the site lacks adequate signage and basic services such as restrooms, which are essential in an area with so much tourist activity. It would be desirable to review the management of the area so that Cerro Arequita welcomes its visitors with the openness, information, and respect it deserves, enhancing its natural and sporting value instead of restricting it with inflexible or arbitrary decisions.

(Translated by Google) Terrible management. The restrictive rules they impose change every week. Zero initiative, the trails are poorly marked, there isn't enough staff to enforce reasonable hours, and there's no official communication channel other than the park ranger, who changes the rules weekly. In case of accidents, they have no tools to carry out a possible rescue. It's a real shame that the wings of athletes in this country are being clipped for no reasonable reason, and that a park ranger is so cruel to a sports community.

(Translated by Google) Cerro Arequita is a beautiful place and truly worth visiting, but the current regulations are too restrictive and greatly detract from the experience. Visitors are only allowed a maximum of two hours, and although sunset is around 7 p.m., they require you to leave by 5 p.m., regardless of whether you're climbing or trekking. It's a shame that you can't enjoy a full day at such a beautiful site, especially if you're coming from Montevideo and spending more time traveling than on the mountain itself. I hope they'll review these restrictions and offer a little more flexibility so you can make the most of your visit.

(Translated by Google) The place is beautiful, clean, and quiet. We went with my 5-year-old son, and he loved exploring every corner and letting his imagination run wild at every sound, hoping for an animal to appear. He didn't see it; surely, with the noise of the people, they're all hiding. But it's a beautiful experience. We visited the puma fountain (free) and then hiked the trail to the waterfall ($100). The wooden games are also a beautiful place for a family picnic. Since we weren't prepared, we decided to go to the inn there. The ravioli were delicious. The only constructive criticism is that it says "country restaurant," and the truth is that there wasn't a great variety of country food to make the place more special. Another 5 stars for everything: the attention upon arrival and the girl at the inn, etc. (Original) El lugar hermoso, limpio, tranquilo. Nature & Parks
Reserva de Flora y Fauna del Pan de Azúcar is a popular destination for families and nature enthusiasts. The reserve offers a variety of local wildlife, providing an opportunity to see and even interact with the fauna of the region. Visitors can enjoy hiking trails that lead to the top of Sugar Loaf Hill, offering stunning views of the surrounding area. The reserve also features amenities such as free parking, a zoo with native animals, and a restaurant for leisurely picnics.
I love this place! It was so fun to go with my kids who loved seeing all the different animals and plants there. It’s a huge reserve with so much wildlife to see and enjoy, plus you can also hike to the top of the hill from here as well, which I didn’t do (this time). The grounds also have a huge playground space for kids and families to play and have a picnic. There are places to buy food, drinks and snacks as well as bathrooms which were kept clean and tidy. It’s shocking to believe this park is FREE to visit which is one of the best parts! We’ll definitely be coming back here in the future and if you’re visiting the area this place is a MUST GO spot!

Francisco Piria Castle

Mentioned on

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Francisco Piria Castle, also known as Castillo de Piria, is a historical gem located in Uruguay. Built in 1897, this castle was the original residence of entrepreneur Francisco Piria and now serves as a museum offering guided tours for visitors. Situated alongside Route 37, the castle boasts beautiful architecture and houses an impressive collection of exhibits including paintings. While it has great potential to become a major tourist attraction, it currently requires more government funding to reach its full potential.
Beautiful castle and museum of F. Piria. If you're lucky enough there is a chance to rise to the roof. Entrance free. And don't forget that there is one more castle not far from there - Castillo de Pitamiglio.

If you don’t have your own transport it’s not really worth it. It’s a small display and although it was easy enough to get there if it wasn’t for the lovely security lady calling a taxi, it would have been an issue to get back! It’s free to visit but taxis were pricey and ultimately it’s not worth it. The place needs some TLC and maybe a bit more info in English but I translated what was there.
Spirit S — Google review
Well, it's on your way to Piriapolis, so you might as well spend a few minutes there. But there is not much to see. Just a small castle. I found many families resting under the shade of the trees there, having pick nicks. It's serene, quite place.
Vasilis M — Google review
Interesting in term of history and culture, but there is no so much thing to do and see. Park is great to have a break in the afternoon. All access is free (parking for car and entrance).
Olivier A — Google review
It’s a nice place to visit in autumn or spring, but you should definitely avoid it in summer, as there’s no air conditioning nor shadows, and the visit can be extremely unpleasant with high temperatures. The building is not big and it’s not fancy either, but is has some wonderful views from the inside, where you can see the hills around from the first floor. It’s located about ten minutes by car from Piriápolis, so it’s a nice place to go if you’re tired of the beach. I believe that it’d be great if they made some maintenance of the building, as it’s more than 100 years old. They could charge a small fee for the visit in order to keep it restored.
Sebastián H — Google review

Mountains
Cerro Pan de Azúcar is a 1,388-ft. peak with a wooden cross at its summit and a nature reserve and zoo at the base. The climb to the top is challenging but rewarding, taking about 1 hour and 30 minutes. It's recommended to wear appropriate footwear and carry water. At the summit, you can admire various species in the reserve such as pumas, jaguars, deer, and birds.
Nice place to enjoy the scenery and trekking..

(Translated by Google) Very good!!! I went from Montevideo on a cot to Piriapolis and then at the terminal I took a Guscapar Pan de Azucar bus that passes every hour and drops you off at the reservation itself!!! excellent experience that I will repeat again this time with more appropriate shoes!!! I gave myself a few good slips and twists because of this. There are very rocky parts of the summit, bring a walking stick if necessary. This hill really cost me more than the Sierras de las Animas, perhaps because of the footwear... I carried a large backpack and the cane helped me a lot to support the weight. I wouldn't go with children to be honest... but that's up to each person. At times I almost gave myself a hard time but probably because I was wearing shoes with thin and worn soles. The entire path is marked with arrows on the rocks but the truth is at some point I got lost and I stayed waiting until someone came walking and I followed them hahaha. The cross is unable to climb, I was left with the desire to see that wonderful view and apart from that the worst thing is that it is all scratched, a shame for the state and the lack of care. I want to go up again!!!!! This time with more precautions and I hope they can enable the cross again to admire that view and what it is like inside!!!!! I went on December 21, 2024. Now they say that they are putting more requirements and care to enter, find out what they are. !!! !!!

(Translated by Google) On this occasion I was able to finish the climb and reach the cross. I am selling with some difficulties and more so that it was a very humid day. Bring water, don't dress too warmly, but a bag for when you reach the chasm is not bad. Along the path you can feel heat beyond stress surrounded by plants, the wind is not felt. If you feel tired, the force exerted by your legs and your breathing tries to keep it calm. Very nice experience. I saw few animals since it was not my priority. Cerro San Antonio is a must-visit in Piriapolis, offering stunning views of the bay and beach from its summit. The chair lift ride to the top is a popular activity, providing an exhilarating experience. At a good height, it offers breathtaking panoramic views. Additionally, visitors can explore the temple located at the summit. While there are shops nearby, they tend to be on the pricier side as is typical in tourist areas.

not accessible for wheelchairs From this hill, you have a beautiful view over the surroundings and also on the other hills like Cerro del Toro, Pan de Azúcar. Excellent Service Servio is a Grade A host and Guide. It's a beautiful experience with excellent wine and great food. The selection of all 5 wines for tasting is wonderful. Honorary mention to the Pear Tannat dessert with the Extra Brüt white wine, I forgot to take a photo of it :')

We had a lovely tour of the vineyard with Catalina. She was very informative and great with the kids. We walked around the grounds, pet the winery dogs, tasted a grape from the vine. It was very serene. We then toured how the wine is made and saw the largest barrels of wine I’ve ever seen! We finished with a delicious wine tasting with charcuterie, empanadas and one of the best desserts I’ve ever tasted. They were very accommodating to our children as well. I recommend you take a few hours to go for a visit. The wine was great too!

The place itself is nice but the staff really needs to be trained in the hospitality area. Hope the owners would read that. You should definitely invest in staff training about event, hospitality and catering.

We booked a tour with lunch. The experience was amazing, Catalina our guide was very professional and kind, the group had a lot of questions and she was very knowledgeable, responding to all of them. This historic winery is beautiful, the food and wine testing were excellent. I highly recommend this experience and I will return for sure! Thank you!

100 years of wine history expect you in Varela Zarranz. Catalina, Varela’s sommelier, will take you far back to when Diego Ponz bought the land and start the wine journey. It is now in the 4th generation of wine producers from the Varela Zarranz family and they are still there, giving all their love and passion to producing delicious wines. Lunch at the Cava with the company of Paton, the winery’s new 4-legged employee is unforgettable.

We visited the bodega for lunch on a Saturday. It was a wonderful experience. The visit included lunch with wine tasting, lunch was parrilla, and a guided visit to the wine celler and production. Everything was great, from the food, trough the wine to the tour, led by a wonderful guide whose name I unfortunately forgot. They were also great with our kid, they have an option for half price for kids. We enjoyed so much our Saturday at the bodega.

We were visiting from the US, and we came to witness a futbol game! The crowd was fun and it was a very interesting experience. Took the bus there and back from the centro. There is no beer inside due to fights? But just know if u wanna beer drink one before or after.

The stadium is great the main problem is getting in ! The cues are long and slow moving , many spectators take over an hour in the cue to get in . Inside the food and drinks are expensive and there is not much variety .

The Hotel Sofitel Montevideo Casino Carrasco and Spa is a luxurious national heritage site in Montevideo, offering 116 elegant rooms and suites. The hotel features a casino, spa, indoor and outdoor pools, beach access, and an upscale French restaurant serving a complimentary breakfast buffet. Built in the Belle Epoque style in 1921, it stands across from the beautiful Carrasco beach.
The hotel is well located in front of a beach. The spa and the pool are very nice. There was always enough space. The rooms are big and luxurious. And the breakfast is also very good. The staff is always very friendly and helpful. The service throughout the hotel is excellent.

The building looks amazing and feels luxurious at first glance, but the experience is far from 5-star. The spa is a joke — no water, no tea, no staff who speak English, and no clue about spa service. I asked for a massage (as advertised), but after 9 p.m., it was “not possible.” Sauna was freezing cold, no staff helped, and I had to figure out how to turn it on myself. The indoor pool is cold too. Despite the high price and beautiful lobby, the service is careless and unprofessional. The room is OK — more like a standard 4-star room. If you’re staying here for a proper spa experience, don’t. Totally not worth the price.

The hotel is beautiful, but just doesn’t really feel worth the price compared to some other places we stayed while in Uruguay.

It was nice to be located just outside of downtown and right on the water. Everyone who worked there was incredibly friendly and helpful. Gonzalo was great fun to talk to and also gave a lot of good options of activities to do in the area. Very clean in a unique historic building and in a location with a lot of restaurants and shops.

Beautiful hotel. Well designed and pleasant atmosphere. From a purely practical point of view, our guestroom could have used a few more hooks and a towel bar in the shower. But, other than that, the guestroom was extremely comfortable, stylish, and very pleasant. The staff were all very courteous, professional and helpful. The doorman, bellman and front desk staff all exhibited authentic hospitality and professionalism. The culinary experience at the 1921 Restaurant was exceptional and the staff there are very engaging and hospitable. They made us feel very welcome and couldn't do enough for us. The team at the lobby bar were excellent! Very courteous and professional. Great experience there! Over all, in my opinion, this is the best hotel in Montevideo. It's not to be missed! Even if you don't stay here, you must come for lunch, tea or a cocktail at the bar. Enjoy the ambience, architecture and hospitality. Really fabulous! We can't wait to return!

During my stay, the room was not clean. The bathroom faucet was faulty, and the shower leaked significantly, which caused water to get all over the floor. The staff was unhelpful, which made my stay unpleasant. This was surprising to me, as I have had excellent experiences at other Sofitel locations in Chicago, New York, London, and Nusa Dua. Additionally, the food was of poor quality; a US$60 sandwich, which was supposed to be hot, was served cold with stale, tearing bread. When I raised the issues, the staff pretty much said “you can look for a different hotel”

Diamond member who has stayed at numerous other Sofitels in numerous countries, This hotel's building and location are great. However, room maintenance and cleaniness are sub-par. Bathroom had clear signs of mould. Rooms had no slippers provided, and when after calling front desk with a request, the reply provided was that that the hotel did not have slippers. However, another room in the same party made the same request and did receive request. In one room, housekeeping was done by 3 different individuals on 3 different days and the level of service varied significantly. One the final day, not all towels were replaced as requested, empty tissue box was left in bathroom and not replenished. Depleted toilet paper was not replaced. Reservation clearly had breakfast included, but hotel reservation records erroneously did not record this. After escalating, this was eventually resolved but I was not notified of resolution until I went to front desk to ask for an update. Post-check out, received an email that one of the rooms had been damaged and that a penalty charge to be applied. After objecting to the claim, hotel eventually replied clarifying that after further investigation, the damage was related to a different reservation. While the matter was resolved, this is not what would be expected of a hotel at this price point. All of these incidents within the same 3-day stay are things that I have not experienced at other Sofitels before, and certainly not so many incidents within the same stay.

Had an overnight stop in the hotel and the staff was helpful as I tried my Spanish and gave me helpful tips. The rooms were very good with some giving a sea view and mine was great. Good WiFi as there was a QR code to login. Restaurant and bar staff, as usual, were helpful and was able to accommodate individual choices. Pleasant city and county to visit. Recommended

(Translated by Google) Highly recommended. I went for the first time because they gave me an individual experience, including a jacuzzi, massage, and afternoon snack. They take care of every detail: Denise's attention, Maria's massage, and the delicious afternoon snack. One thing to note is that you don't run into other people. I didn't want to see men in bathrobes, haha, since there's an experience for couples. I recommend booking ahead; the schedule fills up quickly, and now I understand why. Congratulations on the offer! (Original) Super recomendable.

(Translated by Google) I went to Big Box for Detox Option 2, but due to my skin condition, I couldn't get the full package, so they agreed to offer Option 1 with a massage technique change. The service was impeccable and the sensory experience was superb. Everything was taken care of, from heated beds on the tables on cold days to relaxation areas with blankets for short waits. The attention to detail is reflected even in the design and aesthetics of the place. I would go back a thousand times more. Thank you so much to Ayelén, Denise, and Evana for such a relaxing and enjoyable experience!

(Translated by Google) I went to Casa Clara with a Big Box and chose the relaxing massage option. From the moment you arrive, everything is well organized: there's a small closet to leave your things, they give you a robe and towel, and you go through the bathroom area, which is very pretty and has excellent water pressure. Then I enjoyed the jacuzzi, surrounded by beautiful vegetation; it was a sunny day, and it was a spectacular experience. Then I moved on to the massages, which were excellent, from head to toe. 👉🏼The only thing that needed improvement was that the massage table was quite noisy, which made it a bit difficult to relax. 👈🏼 To finish, they offered me coffee, yogurt with cereal, and pastries. Overall, a lovely experience and I recommend it.
