Beaches
Playa Vichayito is a stunning beach that stands out as one of the best destinations for families, especially those with children. With its crystal-clear and warm waters, it offers an inviting atmosphere perfect for swimming and relaxation. The beach is known for its serene environment, making it an ideal spot to unwind. While much of the area has been privatized with houses, restaurants, and hotels lining the shore, visitors still find joy in its beauty.
(Translated by Google) By far the best beach of all that we have visited with my family (4 children from 3 to 14). They loved it. Very crystal clear and hot water. Very pretty. I am glad that I have chosen this final point for a trip of almost 30 days of driving along the coast of Peru, from the South. (Translated by Google) Exceptional beach, not a shadow of waste, normal employees clean it every morning. Very very few people. The water is blue and clear, and above all warm! You enter it like your bathtub. The ocean creates mini rivers 15 cm high on the beach at high tide, ideal for children. Not far away there is "los organos", a small picturesque village, but no need to go there, because you can have groceries, water, whatever you want delivered by motorbike taxi. On the other hand, for gringos like me, be careful of the heat and UV rays, it's extreme! If you want to rent on site air conditioning is obligatory! And particularly hungry mosquitoes 24 hours a day 🙃!

(Translated by Google) Its beaches are beautiful, sandy and calm waters but above all they are not dirty like those of Máncora because they are exclusive for guests of nearby hotels. The sunsets are excellent if you stay in a hotel near the beach. The downside is that there is no nearby commercial establishment with a variety of products and above all that do not have excessive prices like those of the mini market I went to. (Translated by Google) From the pier, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the turtles. Admission to the pier costs 5 soles per person. If you want to swim with the turtles, you also have to pay for a pointless boat ride and then get off next to the pier stairs. Personally, it's not worth it; there are other tours that include this option and are better and cheaper. (Translated by Google) The San Lucas de Colan Church, Located at the entrance to the spa 17 kilometers from Paita, built on a shrine from the Chimú period. It is considered the first Christian Temple erected on the coasts of the South Pacific by the Spanish evangelizers and as one of the oldest churches, established in Peru during the 16th century in the Baroque style. In the year 1877, Don Manúel Gomez Jaines, assures that after the founding of Piura the Dominicans arrived from Nicaragua; Fralecto Astorga and Bonifacio Escoquis, who in 1536 began the construction of the church, the Tallan ethnic group of the Colàn participated in its construction, according to Gomez Jaines, it was built from limestone, facing the plaza, ornamented with golden altars. It has a main door, the façade has four turned wooden columns, two on each side of said door, these columns support a cornice that has a pyramidal shape. Its main altarpiece stands out with the noble shield, sculpted on the door of the tabernacle: (Carving of an eagle) which according to heraldry is the queen of birds and is a connotation of the reign, an excellent piece that is often found on noble shields. . Due to the aforementioned characteristics, it is similar to the noble coat of arms of the Habsburg family dynasty that ruled Spain between 1514 to 1700. The detail detected on the tabernacle door deserves special attention due to the information it can provide regarding the antiquity of the church. since it suggests that it was built to highlight the memory of the kings of Spain ruled by the Habsburg dynasty between the 16th and 18th centuries. It has a bell that dates back to 1908, however, according to documentation consulted, in 1830 Don Francisco Helguero gave a bell for the tower and a bell for the service. The church has a rich movable artistic heritage, made up of altarpieces, imagery of visible carvings, clothing carvings, candlestick carvings, articulated carvings, canvas and panel pictorial works, liturgical objects such as monstrances, glass bells, candelabras, furniture, etc. It was restored between the years (1987 - 2000) by the National Institute of Culture, with the support of the German government embassy, Foncodes, Luciano Castillo Sub-Region and the University of Piura.

You will discover of all manner of birds and even deer on your walk. There are some interesting shapes and patterns in some of the buildings. The staff are very friendly and knowledgable. The chapel is peaceful and well-designed. There is a great sense of peace and harmony when walking around that must make it a perfect place to study. Even if you do not work or study there it is worth a visit.

The university is great. But the classrooms? Let’s just say the air conditioning seems to be set for polar bears, not people. My girlfriend ends up needing a winter jacket just to attend lectures, and she's caught a cold more than once because of it. Unless you're part penguin, you might want to bring a sweater… or two. A little less Arctic and a bit more human-friendly temperature would really make a difference! 🙏

Plaza de Armas Piura

City park
Sights & Landmarks
Plaza de Armas de Piura is considered one of Peru's oldest and most charming main squares. The city green space is adorned with old tamarind trees, flowers, and park benches, as well as the marble statue "Pola." Every Sunday, a flag lifting ceremony takes place here. While it offers a pleasant spot to relax under the shade, some feel that more attention should be given to its upkeep considering its historical significance.
Piura is a very interesting tropical city, with most hospitable people. An excellent 5* hotel on one side of the Plaza, and a number of traditional restaurants on the other. Not on the conventional tourist trail but much loved by Peruvians. Where the republic of Peru was founded in 1830 by General Grau, whose home is now a museum.

Nestled in the heart of Catacaos, the Plaza de Armas is a lively city park that encapsulates the essence of local culture and history. This charming square is conveniently located near a stunning church adorned with beautiful paintings and an impressive collection of saint statues, making it a significant pilgrimage site. Visitors can stroll along market roads lined with handcrafted goods and unique jewelry, perfect for picking up souvenirs.
Around this place you'll find handcrafted goods and jewelery which is typical for the area. Also the square is quite pretty and has a astonishing curch. Moreover you can relax quite well in one of the benches.

As typical of Perú, this Plaza de Armas is located near the church, which is considered as a centre of pilgrimage tourism. The church is decorated well with paintings. It's a beautiful church. What I liked most is the market road with artifacts of daily use. Of course there are keepsakes too. Church has a population of statues of saints. Must mention that the hot climate of Piura you have to bear with in all tourist places of Piura.

Museo de Sitio de Tucume

Museum
Specialty Museums
Museum includes English and Spanish texts, so easy to visit as a foreign tourist. The rooms have nice artifacts and good information explains their origin and the people who crafted them. The museum gives a good oversight as to how the pyramids were used over time by the different cultures.
Brian D — Google review
We caught a combi to Tucume from Lambayeque and then walked to the museum. After a long and very hot walk we arrived at the museum and were told the site is closed due to the rains, and only the museum was open, but without a discount in price. There was no way to view the pyramids up close. Then we couldn't find a moto to take us back to town, so we had another long walk back. I wouldn't recommend visiting unless you can confirm the site is open.
Rowan B — Google review
The museum is open. The rest seems to be closed. Or guide would not let us go close to the pyramides. They where closed?? This looks like a place that is not operating on a good tourist level. Disappointing.
Truls N — Google review
Real good museum about the history of the region. Signage in both English and Spanish and the old pyramids are absolutely breathtaking. Spent 1 hour in the museum and 2 hours walking around the pyramids. Don’t forgot to go to the mirador and see the hairless dogs indigenous to the area. Highly recommend. It’s S2.5 combi ride from Chiclayo and S3 motortaxi ride once you get to Tucume to the museum.

Tucume pyramids

Archaeological site
Sights & Landmarks
Tourist area known for its pre-Hispanic roots & twenty-six monumental architectural buildings.
Hidden gem on the north coast of Peru! Visited on Friday, June 27, 2025, close to closing time, but we never felt like we were being rushed along. This museum exceeded my expectations. It’s clean, modern, and thoughtfully curated—with high-quality exhibits presented in both Spanish and English. I enjoyed the storytelling format that ties modern local voices to their ancestral past, making the experience personal and immersive. It’s especially family-friendly, thanks to well-executed interactive and engaging displays for younger visitors. I also appreciated that the museum is located directly at the archaeological site, so no need to choose between history and location—you get both in one visit. After exploring the three excellent museums, you can head out to see multiple Huacas (pyramids) nearby, which adds depth and context to what you’ve just learned. The entrance fee is only 8 soles, so very reasonable. The only knock on the entire experience was the steep guide fee—80 soles for a Spanish-only tour, which felt high compared to other sites. We opted to explore on our own. If you're in the Lambayeque area and have the time, this is absolutely worth a visit—Túcume is one of the largest prehispanic sites on Peru’s north coast, with layers of Chimú and Lambayeque history that are vividly brought to life.
Rodney N — Google review
Nice place to visit. Can walk up a nearby hill to get a good view of the whole place and the surrounding area. There is a way to get in round the left hand side you follow a dirt track road in and you don't have to pay the entrance fee that way.
Charles F — Google review
A bit lacking in explanation and not that much to visit, I think about 2/3 is closed but we walked around anyway. You can't visit the sacred stone (that was closed off). We did route a+b, which I would recommend, but route b is a quite a long walk to get to the excavation site, which you just walk around. There's a bit of information, but not much. If you are going to Trujillo, it might be better to save your visit for the Huaca de la Luna, which is 15min away from Trujillo and a better site to visit in my opinion.
Matthew B — Google review

Lambayeque’s first museum, great experience, the museum has three floors and great figurines that tell an amazing story!
David A — Google review
A well-laid out museum with some nice selection of Pre-Colombian artifacts across a large period of time. There are three floors to view, and all of the signs are in Spanish, so it helps if you can read some. The array of ceramics is quite impressive from the different time periods are quite impressive, as well as the well-preserved mummified remains on display. I tend to tour museums slower than almost anyone I know, and this only took 1.5 hours. If you can't read Spanish, and decide to visit here, you could view the whole place in 45 minutes or less. The entry cost is 8 soles. There was a fun display of fertility and sexuality artifacts while we visited as well (adults only it said).
Brian D — Google review
The Bruning Museum, though overshadowed by it's more illustrious neighbors, is still well worth a visit. What it lacks in shear quantity of gold and treasure it makes up for in the way it contextualizes the artifacts and history of the region. The collection is fascinating and beautiful and is organized so as to elucidate the succession of cultures and the ways in which they were influenced by their predecessors and neighbors. The museum also shows photographs and diagrams of how the artifacts were found and excavated. Very informative!

The Museum of the Royal Tombs of Sipan, located in northern Peru, is a remarkable pyramid-shaped establishment dedicated to exhibiting intricate funerary objects from the pre-Inca Royal Tombs of Sipan. Opened in November 2002, this world-class facility features a carefully curated collection displayed with great care and attention to detail. Photography is not allowed, and visitors must have their bags checked before entering.
Omg the museum recently had renovations and it looks amazing, there are professional guides who tell you great stories behind the pieces, great experience, be aware that you can’t bring large bags into the museum but they have an area where they store your belongs to pick up when ready to leave.

The Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum near Chiclayo is a must-visit if you love history and archaeology. The pyramid-style architecture itself reflects the ancient Moche culture, and inside you walk through the story of the Lord of Sipán step by step, from excavation to the stunning treasures found in his tomb. The gold, silver, ceramics, and textiles give a deep insight into the artistry and beliefs of the Mochica civilization. The museum is very well maintained — clean, organized, and carefully curated with proper lighting and security that protect these priceless artifacts. The exhibits are presented with respect and detail, making it easy to appreciate the importance of this culture in Peru’s history. Some explanations are only in Spanish and weekends can be a bit crowded, but overall it is one of the best museums in Peru and highly recommended 😊😊😊

(Translated by Google) It is a church that is similar to some European churches, it is very large and very striking from every angle around it. And it has a lot of history, it has volunteers who help many people; you can take tours. Some information I can share: It was erected by Mons. Daniel Figueroa Villón (RIP), first Bishop of Chiclayo, on June 7, 1957. Since then it has been operating under the official name of “San Antonio de Padua” Parish. On June 22, 1957, Fr. José Guereta Zurinaga O.F.M. was appointed first parish priest. The first Cooperating Vicars (since 1984 they are called parochial vicars), Br. Juan Bautista Gamarra, Br. Francisco Campos Zavaleta and Br. José Martínez Aliaga, were appointed on July 4, 1957. On March 12, 1958, Bishop Figueroa Villón, of pleasant memory, handed over the administration of this Parish to the Missionary Province of “San Francisco Solano” of Peru. Juan Bautista Gamarra, Fr. The leafy urban park, Las Musas, showcases statues inspired by Greek mythology. Its pathways are wide and it encompasses a playground as well. Additionally, there is the Paseo de las Musas, a scenic walkway featuring statues of Greek goddesses that adds an unusual touch to the cityscape. It's a peaceful and beautiful space in the heart of Chiclayo where visitors can enjoy a taste of Athens in Peru.

It's not a huge place. It looks nice and well cared. However, there are not many places to sit comfortably, it's a open area so one must be aware and noise of the cars when there is traffic around makes it not an ideal place to relax completely.

Additionally, there are beautiful mural artworks illustrating the stories and history of cultures that have developed in this region over the past 4,000 years.
This was so impressive to walk through. Amazing detailed realism on every sculpture. The informative panels of each sculpture were very descriptive of the different eras. A must-see if passing/staying in Chiclayo!

Interesting walk and sculptures, perhaps one of the best uses of the site of a city drain I've ever seen!

Beautiful mural artwork depicting the history and cultural stories of the cultures that developed in the are for the past 4,000 years. It’s sad that this is not more prominently displayed in a more central part of town. Obviously, a lot of work has been put into creating these sculptures and murals. We enjoyed walking the entire path to see the whole display.

Archeological complex El Brujo

Archaeological museum
Museums
Ancient, Moche-era archeological complex with ruins, art, wall designs, a mummy & various artifacts.
We started our trip at 10 am at Trujillo center and finished around 3:30pm.The pieces of art is great . The lady of chaos is the unique piece in the north of Peru in such a great preservation, showing the importance of this woman in that place. You will need to pay s/10 for entry to the museum. I will recommend to accept only payments in order to avoid problems to people who don't carry cash. Toilets very clean and everything well organized.

I spent some really interesting hours in the archaeological complex El Brujo. It covers thousands of years of uninterrupted human occupation. The complex is situated about 70 km north of Trujillo. It is about a 45 minutes drive from Trujillo and absolutely worth the trip. The latest excavations carried out at the pyramid called Huaca Cao have revealed a ceremonial site that is 1800 years old. It was built with the intention to bury a royal person. They found a mummified young female person. The condition of the mummy was so good that the could see tattooes on different parts of her body. We could see the body in the museum. She was called: La dama de Cao, (The Lady of Cao) and we could see a lot of artefacts and jewellery. After seeing the museum, we walked around in the huaca, and it was really interesting. This was the Moche culture, and I recommend reading about the Moche before you visit El Brujo. And it is also interesting to make a stop in the nearby village Magdalena de Cao. Lots of nice paintings on the walls of the houses.

I most see if you already saw Chan Chan, Huaca del sol and Huaca de la Luna. They have a " mummified woman ruler". The site is one hour away from the city of Trujillo but the trip is worth it.

Awesome site! Didn’t see a witch or wizard but the paintings and walls were very impressive! One of the better sites around Trujillo, and quite straightforward to reach without a tour, just leave yourself plenty of time for the return as the colectivo was slow to fill back from Magdalena

The archaeological site of El Brujo is absolutely amazing! The ruins are impressive and the museums are very well organized and informative. This was an important ceremonial complex of the Moche culture, dating back to around 100–750 AD. You can still see the remains of pyramids, temples, and incredible murals that tell stories of rituals and daily life. One of the highlights is learning about the Señora de Cao, a female ruler discovered here, whose tomb and artifacts are beautifully displayed in the museum. A fascinating place that combines history, culture, and stunning views of the coast—definitely worth the visit!
Adrian H — Google review
This place was see inspiring considering it was built 1000 years before the Incas. You could easily spend all day walking around
David M — Google review
Not quite as impressive size wise as some of the other archeological sites we had visited. However the number of tombs discovered so far really give an insight to the changing burial techniques over time. A lack of funds has temporarily stopped any further excavation. If you visit Peru it is still worth the effort.
David F — Google review
Pyramids nowhere near as impressive as later Inca, Azrec or Mayan structures and they have been greatly eroded by rain. However the excavations show an advanced culture fir ghe time. The museum gives an excellent interpretation and there is a room full of gold clothing, ornaments etc that the Spaniards missed giving us all a better insight into the distant. past
