Fountain of St. Joseph

Fountains
Fountain of St. Joseph, also known as Chafariz de Sao Jose, is a historic site built in 1749 that served as a crucial stop for travelers to replenish their canteens and water their animals. Despite its slightly worn appearance, the fountain exudes an air of tranquility with its surrounding greenery, making it an ideal spot for picnics or seeking respite from the heat.
Excellent site for a peaceful stroll. The fountain is relatively well preserved, resembling the facade of baroque churches. It was built in the 18th century, and was used to supply water to the residents of Tiradentes. Apparently, the three water spouts had different purposes (human consumption, another one for animals and the third one for washing clothes). At the back you can still see the aqueduct that supplies the water which comes from the Bosque da Mãe D'Agua (access seems closed now).
Jorge R — Google review
Very cool historic fountain. It was very unusual because it is in someone's front yard. The home located behind the fountain is privately owned. it was a little disappointing to see only two of the three heads of the fountain working at the time we visited. Hopefully the caretaker has plans to restore this historic Monument.

The Museum of St. Anne, located in Minas Gerais, was originally a jailhouse and has now been transformed into a small yet captivating museum. Igreja de Santo Antonio

Mentioned on

Catholic church
Igreja de Santo Antonio, also known as Igreja Matriz de Santo Antonio, is a stunning church in Tiradentes. Named after the town's patron saint, it was designed by Aleijadinho and boasts a magnificent interior adorned with gold and Old Testament symbolism. The church features a remarkable polychrome organ from Portugal and seven golden phoenixes hanging from braided chains. Outside, there is a famous sundial dating back to 1785.
Gorgeous church, covered with gilded gold. Every detail is a joy to examine. Make sure to note the imported Portuguese organ.
Josiah W — Google review
Standing before a centuries-old church is always an impressive experience, evoking thoughts of the countless people who have been there before us. The building itself, with its towering structure and rich history, carries with it both light and shadow. While it has been a symbol of suppression at various points in history, it has also been a place of belonging and hope for those seeking solace and a better afterlife. This blend of dark history and spiritual refuge speaks to the deep and complex role the church has played in people's lives over the centuries.
Ulf D — Google review
Very beautiful, old colonial church. The R$10 seems steep for what it is though and the amount of tourists moving through. Occasionally closed for weddings etc. but this isn't well advertised.

It isn't big but has very interesting shops with something peculiar. It is good for a walk and good for travellers that are passing by Juiz de Fora as there are many good food options. From Mac something to good restaurants. The only negative point I noticed on my visit, is that the parking is not good for medium to big size cars. A big SUV like Mercedes G class, Chevrolet Silverado or Ford F250 are going to use two lots.

It is a natural park in Minas Gerais state. The park is wonderful, full of sedimentary rocks and natural vegetation, some streams and caves. You can trail everywhere there and have fun in contact with nature. I also recommend going to "janela do céu" (window of the sky), which is a very long walking trail. It is tiring, but worth the visit. About the park itself, I do recommend it.

Fazenda do Paraízo

Farm
Sights & Landmarks
This is a very well preserved farm from 1845 that used to produce coffee. The first owner was Domingos Custódeo Guimarães or Viscount of Rio Preto (Black River Viscount). The actual owners belongs to the second family of owners of this farm. Mrs. Simone and her husband keep the place preserved as it was in the century the farm was built. Everything is kept original, the furniture, the paintings, decoration... Is like going in the past. I can say it is one of the best preserved farms from the time that coffee was considered an investment good as gold. To visit this farm, you have to schedule your visit by phone. The price is about US$10.00, it is not expensive due to the knowledge of the owners about the farm history and their sympathy. It is easy to find a place to park in the farm, don't worry about this.

(Translated by Google) Impressive. Jaw-dropping. The entire structure, masonry, decoration and furniture are original from the mid-19th century. A highlight is the original coffee processing machinery, driven by hydraulic force, assembled in 1868 and produced in 1868 in New York, USA. It cannot be compared to any farm in the Vale do Café region in Vassouras and surrounding areas: all the others have already undergone major renovations and are no longer original. (Original) Impressionante.

(Translated by Google) By car, approximately 8 minutes from downtown Rio das Flores. The place preserves the yard where coffee was spread out to dry and the machines that came from the United States to produce it. In February 2025, I took a guided tour (R$100.00 per person) inside the "big house" which, because it is inhabited by the current owners, cannot be photographed or filmed. The environment preserves details from the 19th century, and the furniture helps to recall a sad period in our history when human beings were kept as slaves to take care of the big house, the farm of barons who exploited black people. The main house is a true museum. You can take pictures of the outside. It is well worth the visit.

Túnel Maria Nossar (Túnel que Chora) is a significant historical site in the Vale do Café, inaugurated in the presence of the imperial family for the purpose of creating a railway to transport coffee. This tunnel, like many other structures in the area, was built by slaves using rough stone and measures 95m long, 5m wide, and 3.5m high. Its peculiar name "Tunnel that Cries" raises curiosity about its origins.
Great Tunnel built by Brazilian slaves end to end.

(Translated by Google) Casa da Hera belonged to Joaquim José Teixeira Leite, a coffee commissioner in the region. The house was built in the first half of the 19th century and Joaquim bought it to live in with his future wife, Ana Esméria Pontes França. The two lived with their two daughters on the property. Eufrasia Teixeira Leite is the only sister portrayed in the house and, after her death in 1930, she left the house and the lands of the farm were inherited by the Institute of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Today, it is managed by IBRAM. The house is very well preserved and the tour is guided, and it is advisable to book in advance; however, you can leave your name at the reception and wait for the next group of visitors. The preserved furniture and rooms serve as illustration for the guide's account, which tells the whole story in detail. It is a journey through Brazil's past and tells a little about the importance of coffee and the luxurious life of the barons in the times of the big house and the sensation. The gardens on the property are worth a visit and the bamboo tunnel is a must-see! There are also dolls in the outdoor area that pay homage to Mariana Crioula and Manuel Congo, who led the slave rebellion in Vassouras, the largest in the Paraíba Valley. The guided tour of the house and the tour of the property are free and well worth it. No food or drink is sold on site. There are bathrooms.

Parque Nacional do Itatiaia

Mentioned on

National park
Nature & Parks
Park
Itatiaia National Park, Brazil's first national park, boasts a diverse range of landscapes from dense rainforests to rugged peaks. The lower section offers accessible trails leading to waterfalls and natural swimming holes, while the remote high country provides excitement for serious hikers and climbers. Visitors can enjoy abundant flora and fauna including orchids, monkeys, and tropical birds. Accessing the upper portion may require a high-clearance vehicle due to challenging roads.
Wonderful national park at Itataia. It's possible to visit the park on foot, bike or by car. Visitors entering the park by car must pay an extra fee (around R$ 24,00) to take it's paved and non paved roads on a motored vehicle. The activities available at the park for visitors range from a beautiful cultural centre with many historical highlights, track trails in a rich forest terrain, magnificent waterfalls to admire and freshen up, numerous bird watching spots, and exuberant viewpoints of the Mantiqueira Mountain and it's wildlife. The difficulty of tracks may vary a lot. Upon entry on the park, visitors are given a detailed map, which shows what's possible to do whilst visiting the site. The park is basically divided into a lower and an upper part. The most demanding tracks, which are also those that one needs to plan in advance, are located in the upper part of park. In those areas, it's possible to camp on designated areas or stay for the night at one of the park's lodging houses (reservation in advance needed). In the park's website, there are lots of information for visitors, and high definition pdf maps for downloading, as well as a list of well trained guides on the park whenever the need arises. It's not possible to park in any spot by the road, the permitted parking areas will be sign posted. All around the park, it's possible to see restaurants, hotels and other private properties, which means there's no time available to do everything you'll find at the park. It's a highly recommended visit, and a place not to forget.

Very nice musuem about Finalnd's first settlers at the city of Penedo. This is the only musuem of this kind in Brazil, and it is located inside the beautiful building of the Finland's Club (it looks very medieval from the outside and, once inside, you'll see how wonderfully decorated it is: check out the superb work of its wooden carved stairs and stoned walls), which is well known in town. The entrance fee is a modest one (R$ 10,00), and the exhibition occupies two floors of the club, one of which is in the basement (sort of sets the tone of the visit). The collection is not vast, but there are tons of objects on display, most of them are original pieces, as they might have been donated from previous inhabitants of the Finalnd community that once existed in the area in 1929. The visit starts with a few historical panels and some patintings, including Toivo's work (need to confirm with the staff if it's still on display), and, then, it continues down onto the basement, including a few displays about past and present Finland's way of life. The entire visit may last around 1 hour or so, and the staff is very welcoming and happy to assist in any query from the visitors. There is a parking lot in front of the club. The musuem, though, is only opened during weekends, so, if you happen to have a chance to pop into town on Saturday or Sunday, I would really recommend taking the tour at this musuem.

(Translated by Google) It's a place worth the effort! I was able to get some information about Penedo, which was very positive. Like other posts here, I also thought that the museum has more items about Finland than about the region itself. It could be better explored.

It's worth a visit, especially for those who enjoy history and antiques like me. The location is easy to access, and there's parking available. (Translated by Google) The museum tells the story of the Finnish community in Penedo. The story is really cool, but the museum is a bit bland, as the objects aren't very interesting! I really like museums, but this one was so-so. However, it's worth learning about the history of Eva Hilden and the Finnish community in Penedo.

(Translated by Google) Interesting for those who enjoy it! I really enjoy museums, and the "Eva Hilden," small but rich in history, is an invitation to enrich your knowledge. The "journey" is short but very interesting; diverse, lively, and captivating. I recommend it! (Original) Interessante para quem curte! (Translated by Google) Amazing. One of the best visits to historic farms I've ever done. Excellent for the farm's original collection, the restoration carried out, and the organization and planning for the visit. The guide is very well prepared. The owners live on site, so there are spaces that cannot be visited, but this does not compromise their historical legacy. The owner is very kind, knowledgeable, and encourages historical preservation. There are projects underway to build a museum and cafeteria. A must-see visit. Price: 25 reais/person (November 2023). Imperdível a visita.
