Visited here as part of a guided tour. There aren’t many tours in English, and their timings didn’t suit my tight schedule, so I opted for a tour in Spanish.
Although I couldn’t fully understand the narrative, I fully appreciated the stunning architecture, stained glass, statues etc. Everyone talks about the amazing acoustics, so the tour left me wanting to return to see a performance.

Great experience for the theater built in 1908. I do recommend the tour if you have 1 hour to spend. It's a nice mix of history and time for taking pictures of different areas of the theater. This includes going into one of the balconies as well. I suggest purchasing tickets in advance. We walked up and had to get tickets that were for 2 hours later.
Absolutely breathtaking! The Teatro Colón is one of the most beautiful theaters I’ve ever visited. I saw the ballet Onegin here, and it was a truly unforgettable experience - stunning performance, perfect acoustics, and an incredible atmosphere. The audience was so passionate and emotional - I’ve never seen anything like it in any other country. A magical evening in Buenos Aires!
This Theatre by far stands as one of the best architecture art in the world. The theatre is even better than that of Garnier Palace, of Paris in my opinion. From seating, to classic environment, acoustics and the artistic architecture of the stage and the balconies.

The english guided tour is hard to book from their official online site. So my wife and I just went to the theater to try our luck second time this morning, we got our tickets over the ticket office. I had my doubt since I had been in couple of top opera houses in Vienna, but It was worth it. The internal decor is fine with baroque style since there are architect from France. The present Colón replaced an original theatre which opened in 1857. During the tour we had chance to hear female soprano rehearsal for 5 minutes which is huge bonus as I see it, then I could hear clearly pure and beautiful sound at back of the theater. I really wish I could have a chance to listen to a real opera here.

The staff are friendly and fluent in English, ensuring you have a great experience. The sushi and dim sum here are particularly tasty, with plenty of flavour and juiciness. Although the juice can be a little too concentrated at times, it's still an amazing meal overall. I'd highly recommend coming here if you're looking for some truly fabulous Japanese food!

expect a 15 to 20 minutes wait before getting a table. the restaurant and the service are nice, but to be honest i was still a bit hungry after having the main dish (Ramen).
The view is the best part of this place, but the rest was disappointing. We went there for lunch after visiting the Japanese Garden, expecting a nice tourist-friendly experience. The food was average at best, and the service was not good. No one spoke English, and the staff didn’t really try to help or understand, which was surprising for a place that clearly gets many tourists. I also asked if there were any discounts for garden visitors. They told me that if you reserve a table at the restaurant, you can visit the garden for free. But if you buy a ticket to the garden first, you don’t get any discount at the restaurant. That policy felt confusing and a bit unfair. In the end, the view was lovely—but everything else didn’t live up to it. The most important for the restaurant - the food and simply isn’t worth going there for.
Extremely overrated, the food was not the best… the rice, the service super bad, so impersonal for such as high price… I was told that it was going to be more tradicional, with the culture, the way they serve it…👎
And is even worst with the robot that it taking it so un personal…

honestly disappointed, was expecting something much better and akin to what they are representing. The building is nice, well decorated and it has direct access to the Japanese Garden (日本庭). You're received and seat by a waiter. We ordered 2 entrees which were good. The main dishes however were lacking in flavor (miso ramen in particular). The desserts were also so-so, the matcha (green tea) ice cream flavor was bland compared to the real thing, yet times more expensive.
The personnel were OK but they kinda rushed everyone to eat and get out, as fast as possible.
So, as I said and by the score I'm giving. It wasn't awful, it was OK, but I was expecting much better, specially for the price. I think they could really do much better and are missing on providing a more real experience.
We were seated almost immediately, but waited for approximately 10 minutes before a server came to our table. It was extremely busy at that time of day so no worries. Food was good, but a bit pricey.
The service is brilliant, very attentive and friendly. They even have menu’s in English which is quite handy. The food is ok but nothing more than that really. Incredible presentation but the meat was rather tough and chewy for my dish (guydon) The dessert however was great.
I really liked this restaurant. I actually went with low expectations, wondering if it would be more of a gimmick because it’s inside the Japanese garden. But the food was excellent! Everything we had was so good. If you you’re lucky, you can get a table outside!

Recoleta Cemetery is an impressive cemetery and definitely worth a visit. The entry fee is quite high though, but it is a place where you can easily spend a few hours.
Eva Peron is located here and fairly easy to find with all the signposts. But its one of the least impressive mauseleums given the styles and sizes of many others.
Its worth doing some reading beforehand about many of the famous mausoleums, some of the sad or eerie stories. It makes discovering them more special.

A mixed bag, but more negatives than positives…
❌ Extremely overpriced unless you’re an Argentine citizen. There’s no free entry and it’s super expensive.
❌ The staff are some of the rudest least helpful people I’ve ever come across.
✅ It is an interesting place to look around, even though as a European most of the famous people were not famous to me.
❌ The state of some of the graves is disgusting, they are literally being used as rubbish dumps with empty paint cans and plastic bags dumped on top of coffins. I have no idea how they are spending the exorbitant entrance fees but it’s not on respecting the dead who are buried here.
I love visiting cemeteries when visiting large cities, as they give great insight into the history and culture of the people. This cemetery is spectacular.
I joined an English guided tour with Victoria, who was engaging and funny, recounting both the stories and the folklore that had built up around some of the mausoleum.
Absolutely fascinating. A great way to spend 2-3 hours.
This is a must visit spot but I recommend getting a local guide as it is all rather meaningless with proper explanations. The mausoleums are a walk through the history of Argentina and of course you can see its most famous inhabitant - Eva Peron though her mausoleum is one of the least impressive of the lot. We spent a couple of hours here with a guide that we hired at the entrance.
We visited the Recoleta Cemetery and were truly amazed by how fascinating and beautiful it is. We had never seen anything like it before! Every tomb and monument has its own unique style, and walking through feels like exploring an open-air museum full of history and art. The atmosphere is peaceful yet impressive, and we were incredibly impressed by the details and architecture throughout. Definitely a must-see when visiting Buenos Aires!
A really unique place and well worth a visit. It feels more like an open-air museum than a cemetery, with amazing sculptures, grand tombs, and a lot of history. Many well-known figures are buried here, and there is a mix of old and some surprisingly modern designs.
Some parts are quite run down though. A few tombs have been left to crumble and look half-collapsed, which is a bit sad to see.
The entry fee for foreigners is ARS 18,000 per person, which is pretty steep for Argentina. Hopefully that money is being used to help with maintenance.
Still, a memorable spot and a must-see if you are in Buenos Aires.
The cemetery is beautiful and the idea is great, but that there are different prices for equal humans is racist. The price for "foreigner" is 4x times higher then the normal price. Lots of construction with lots of yellow barks everywhere... Lots of rubbish in the Graves and around... Maybe someone should clean it for this entry fees. Bring lots of cash, cause they just accept cardpayment.... Which isn't progressive cause the ones from Europe don't work...

The town was very nice. Close to wineries, although I wasn't able to fit that in. It is more for couples and families then it is for nightlife. Quiet and relaxing. One or two days is all you need.
If you want to get a nice picture for the entire town, you have to get up there, and I am calling it the "Million Dollars View". The stairs are very steep, and they don't allow people wearing sandals in for safety reasons.

Walking through the cobblestone streets of Colonia del Sacramento feels like stepping into a time capsule. Every stone, every colonial facade, every old lantern seems to whisper stories of sailors, merchants, and cultures that crossed paths in this corner of Uruguay. And right in the heart of it all stands the lighthouse.
The Colonia Lighthouse rises above the ruins of the old San Francisco Xavier convent, and from the top, you get a sweeping view of the city embracing the Rio de la plata river
But the real magic isn’t just the lighthouse. It’s the walk. Heading downhill from the historic center toward the river, surrounded by whitewashed walls, blooming bougainvillea, and uneven stones, you feel something deeper. There’s a quiet energy, almost spiritual. The Río de la Plata appears at the end like a vast mirror, and you feel small but full.
Recommendation: Take the walk in the late afternoon, when the sun begins to dip. The golden light on the stones and the river creates a magical atmosphere. And if you can, climb the lighthouse just before sunset. It’s a postcard moment you won’t forget.
Cool lighthouse 💡🏠 to stop by briefly. It looked really cool with the blue 🔵 sky and birds 🐦 flying in the background. Unfortunately, it was closed ⛔ when we went so we couldn't see the inside of it.
Nice old colonial town, there are a lot of bars and restaurants, you can climb the lighthouse, walk the original streets and spend easily half a day waiting perhaps for the ferry to Buenos Aires. The old town is situated just a few blocks away from the ferry and bus terminal.

Our most disappointing accommodation in Uruguay - disengaged staff and outrageously expensive.
WHAT’S GOOD
* Super comfortable bed and good size room.
* Lots of friendly dogs around (some owned by the family, others come in from the street).
* Amazing restaurant in Carmelo called Nido - sensational food, great prices and wonderful staff.
WHAT’S NOT SO GOOD
* Outrageously expensive (and more than twice the price our nights in Punta del Este, Montevideo and Buenos Aires) - very poor value for money. Breakfast was basic with supermarket bread (delivered to your room at 5pm the night before).
* Staff were extremely disengaged. We asked what restaurants were open and they said they would bring a list to our room - this didn’t happen. We asked for toilet paper as it wasn’t replenished and it didn’t come (so my husband had to go and ask again). And both male and female staff walk past your windows and peer into the glass windows (from less than a metre away) - like a peeping Tom -not private or respectful.
* Construction is on the site (diggers) and starts at 8am and goes all day (together with the mowing).
Fabulous boutique winery run by a classy and gracious family who welcome their guests like family!
Incredible wine tasting experience where you can enjoy a few the best rated and highest quality wines of Uruguay.

What an amazing experience. Sebastian was an excellent host and teacher. They are open from 11-8 (ignore google’s hours). I am a Californian and this is some of the best red wine we have tasted. We encourage you to linger over your three glasses of syrah, tannat, and grand reserve of both aged in oak for 2+ years with a delicious tray of cheese, meat and toasted bread. If here in February, you can watch them process their luscious grapes and experience the New York Times reviewed bodega experience. Meeting Bernardo and his son Juan and learning about their family history was a highlight of our Uruguayan trip.

We stopped by the vineyards looking for Orujo. But after being warmly welcomed by a gentleman, we decided to stay and eat lunch. This unplanned meal was a pleasant surprise. The seven-course menu (including desserts) with wine pairing was outstanding. The menu, which included dishes such as salmon, cod, caviar, ribs, lamb, and dulce de leche, was delicious. The pairing was spot on and included a few of the best wines produced by this bodega. Our waiter was professional and was able to explain the wine pairings. If this restaurant were located in Europe, it could be close to a 1-star Michelin, and it would be a Bib Gourmand (if not for the price). Overall, considering the cost-benefit, it’s a wise choice and worth every penny (each menu with pairing costs approximately USD 150). It is also worth mentioning the beautiful vineyards and the antique car collection. A must when visiting Montevideo.
Really beautiful vineyard, even in winter. We arrived without a reservation and were able to be accommodated. It’s not well described but they do a free walking tour that’s about 45 mins, with a free glass of wine. After that you can do a tasting or eat if you want. Wines were very good, staff was attentive and kind, food portions were generous. Our kids even had a good time looking for peacocks and other animals on the property.
Amazing lunch! 7 courses, with perfectly paired wines. Service was excellent with a wonderful description of each wine and dish. We started with a tour of the vineyard, too. Such a great experience!

Bodega Bouza was an awesome half-day excursion during our time in Montevideo. It’s just a short ride outside the city, and we were having a blast from start to finish. Our guide, Matthias (the tall one — since he mentioned there’s more than one Matthias there 😂), was extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and had a great sense of humor.
The wines we tried were exquisite, and the food was just as incredible. The empanadas in particular left a lasting impression, but every dish was amazing. Even more impressive was how perfectly the wines and foods complemented each other — it was fascinating to see how each could enhance or change the flavor of the other.
We also learned a lot about the winemaking process and how much detail and care goes into cultivating each variety. The tour was very well paced, and we even had some free time afterward to explore the property. We took a peaceful walk around the vineyard, and I’d absolutely bring others here the next time I’m in Uruguay.
The only thing I’d do differently next time is get there by Uber or another service instead of using the optional shuttle. The shuttle was a bit late in the morning and had an issue picking us up afterward, but they quickly refunded the cost, and we easily grabbed an Uber back to the city.
Overall, an unforgettable experience — 100% worth it! 🍷

I have to say this is wonderful place to visit if you are like me, a wine lover. We visited for our anniversary, and shuttle trip is only 30 USD from Montevideo per person.
Not only the wines are fantastic, the food is as great as the drink. The tour after the meal is very informative and you will learn about the winery make their wines.
For the record, highly recommend to buy some of their reversed wine from the winery, as you can’t find them in the store in town.

While it offers great photo opportunities, caution is advised for cyclists due to safety concerns.
This unique bridge has become an important landmark in Uruguay. It required some clever engineering and original construction techniques. My father worked on this bridge in 1963 as a civil engineer and expert in cable bridge construction, so I'm a bit biased. In any case, it's an interesting landmark and worth a visit if you're in the area.

What a wonderful place to spend a few hours. Many of the specimens are bleached by years in formaldehyde and some unrecognisable as creatures, let alone fish, but this is part of the joy of this place. Honestly. It’s a rambling shared personal love of the ocean and all things both in it, and to do with it. This museum has displays of bakelite radios, picnic sets, clothing and the music of the day, that day being early to mid twentieth century. There are quirky little corners and spaces where you’ll get lost in memories, not necessarily to do with the sea. And there’s music playing constantly. Ravel, Rodgers and Hammerstein, I swear a bit of Vivaldi. This place is just weird. I loved it.
And do take the time to see the insect display across the road.

This museum was AWESOME! Great for kids and adults. There are 4 museums included in the ticket, I loved them all, and my boyfriend who isn't a huge museum person really loved the museum of memories, which shows old packaging and memorabilia from the country/area. It was 250 pesos per person which I found good value, there is a great deal of information and specims on show. We are English speakers and whilst most of the explanations were in Spanish, the highlights had English explanations too. There is free WiFi so we could Google translate anything else we wanted.
It costs 300 uruguayan pesos per peson (ONLY CASH) it is much bigger than it looks like if you really want to read everything, it might take you up to 3 hours. Ideally for kids. But if you are not into museums, I feel that it's not worth the trip from punta del este
Our expectations were high for this place. When we got there, though, we learned that what they do there was far beyond what we even thought was possible. The collection of sea relics they have there is astonishing. There is also an insectary, which is impressive. Other than that, the staff is very kind and the dogs that warmly welcomed us upon our arrival made the experience even more especial. I strong recommend paying the museum a visit.
Hidden among the silver fir trees of the Maldonado bar is this unexpectedly well-stocked museum, in which you will find a wide variety of items on display, from marine fauna and flora, history of the Uruguayan coast beaches, ancient objects and even a insectary. It has space for children and access to bathrooms in acceptable conditions. The ticket price includes access to all facilities.

I stayed in the Fuerteventura Suite, which overlooks both the infinity pool and the ocean. Waking up to that view felt like living inside a dream. The bathtub alone deserves its own mention—spacious & sculptural.
At night, the pool becomes pure magic—glimmering with twinkling lights that reminded me of a Rolls-Royce starlight ceiling. It truly felt like the stars had descended into the water.
As someone with dietary restrictions, I was thrilled to find that everything at the hotel is gluten-free (except for a cute little “gluten corner” at breakfast that made me smile). The food was delicious, nourishing, and beautifully presented.
The staff made the experience even more memorable. Always smiling, kind, and eager to help—they really make you feel at home.
Walking along the beach each day was deeply soothing, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover Vik Bahía just a few minutes away by foot. I visited their wellness center, The Shack, and loved every moment there.
Although La Susana was closed during my visit, everyone I’ve spoken to insists it’s the place to go—so I’ll definitely be back to experience it.
Highly recommend Playa Vik to anyone seeking beauty, serenity, and inspiration in one of the most special corners of the world.

I desperately wanted to love this hotel but despite the great futuristic design, beach front location and spacious suites , it really felt like the property was neglected and only had a few staff members for the whole place (often resulting in whole areas being unattended), as well as ongoing construction work while we were there. Furthermore, our 1,000$ a night suite had a broken air conditioning system and the heating couldn’t be turned off either so it got to the point where we couldn’t stay inside without the front door open to let air in. Things got worse as on the second evening the blackout blinds in our room stopped working and it turned out they had been disabled by the staff earlier that day without anyone telling us. Thankfully another suite next door was available for us to move into. I’ve attached photos of both rooms but also of the lack of attention to detail when it comes to keeping the hotel at a level where it’s worth the price. Also: I’d love to see more options on the breakfast menu(so far only eggs available) and in general food quality should be improved. Gym needs renewing too. Equipment is rusty and very old. What I liked was the sunsets over the pool, the layout of the suites, the quality of bathrobes/ slippers / toiletries provided and how nice the staff were , you can tell they work hard.

Our visit to Salto del Penitente was nothing short of an adventure! With six friends, we explored this breathtaking spot, and it definitely delivered on excitement. The highlight was the ropeway—an exhilarating ride that added a rush of adrenaline to the scenic beauty surrounding us.
One thing to note: the network is unreliable, so carry cash for payments. While cards are accepted, if you need to do a bank transfer, you’ll have to connect to Wi-Fi from a nearby location where you book the ropeway. The staff handling the ropeway were very helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable.
For food, the Parador restaurant is a great stop, offering a solid menu with good options. It’s the perfect place to recharge after your adventures.
However, if you're heading to Agua del Penitente, be extra cautious—the road is slippery. Unfortunately, we witnessed someone take a serious fall, which was a stark reminder of how important it is to watch your step in these rugged areas.
Despite the few challenges, this place is packed with adventure, making it a fantastic destination for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. Highly recommended for those looking for an exciting and scenic getaway!
One of the best nature spots in the country. Beautiful waterfall that runs through a rock channel into a pond with hills all around. Great spot for a picnic, to relax, or do some of the activities they offer.

With a beautiful lake and wonderful waterfall, Salto del Penitente is a gorgeous site to visit while in Uruguay. The hike to the different locations on the site is short, yet a bit steep to go to the waterfall.
There are also zipline attractions in the site, though a very short glide.
Beautiful place, full of nature, amazing landscape, great for adventurous people, beautiful sightseeing. Great for families, not accessible for people on wheelchairs. There's food and shelter. It has a couple of attractions like zipline and others. Not dangerous at all.

For a fee of $35 per person, visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse and experience the views that offer a panoramic perspective of the surrounding landscape.
If you are in the area, visiting and climbing the lighthouse is well worth it on a nice day. The views are amazing. Around sunset if it is open, would be the best.
Beautiful view of La Paloma. Picture and information on the ground floor is interesting as well. If you have the ability wait for a day when the wind isn't that strong.
I've been visiting this place since i was a kid. Only 8yo+ allowed. The way up is as easy as it gets for a lighthouse. If you're claustrophobic the initial steps may bother you, but after those, the stairs are very spacious. Up there in the balcony there's a great 360 view, and super windy.
Opened till sunset, "puesta del sol" which is interpreted by the 'boss' there as "kick out all tourists 20 minutes before sunset, i want to go home".. The younger employee wanted to let us up but was not allowed to. Other tourists that were already upstairs were called down 15 min before sunset. All were mad about this bulls*it...

Beautiful view of the whole surrounding for less then 1$ a person, 30.pesos. climbing is a bit exhausting if someone not in shape. Another thing need to mention is the the distance between the rail shelves is too wide, and my slim daughter could easy slip between. Other then that, its a great experience.

My wife is an architect, and is building a structure in the border town of Rio Branco, Uruguay. This is the border crossing bridge between this city and Jaguarão, Brazil. Río Branco is famous for the Duty Free Shops where you can buy all kinds of products at highly discounted prices. Food Stuffs, booze, Perfumes, name brand clothing, appliances, tools, and much more. You have to show your international identification, and pay with a foreign credited card or cash. Uruguayans can not buy in these shops, so hoards of Brazilians flock to these shops. The Uruguayan side also has a very nice Casino. Jaguarão, Brazil is still a very traditional lazy border town. This is where you buy your food and pharmacy needs as the Brazilian side of the border is much cheaper than the Uruguayan side. I love to go there, and my kids love it too. Enjoy!

This is a beautiful town square. It has very mature trees and nice paths, and there are benches, some with very nice sculptures. The central fountain is very elaborate and beautiful. It is a wonderful place to walk around.
Doesn't have any lights at night and is very dangerous. But in the daylight is a beautiful plaza and has a lot of people passing through during the weekdays and families e young people at weekends enjoying it.
Completely forgotten by the city government, early morning you will be a little scared by the number of homeless people, also overall everything it's getting rotten

Old building very not well taken care of. There are independent fish markets (complete with the authentic Yelling) and health food stores, but the rest is mediocre cafes, overpriced sit down food, mediocre padarias, insanity of panhandling and graffiti outside. Only reason I would come back is if- IF- I wanted fish from the fishmonger, Cafe do Mercado (also exists praia de belas) or Temakieria.

I can't believe I lived in Porto Alegre for 3 years before visiting this jewel! Come here first if you're looking for artesenal gifts or souvenirs that are unique and truly reflect Porto Alegre. It's also a great place just to pass the day. Lot's to see, tons of restaurant options, clearly a popular spot in the city, for shopping, walking, running, or just getting some air.
It's a beautiful and quite big park. Locals love to go on weekends and I would recommend to tourist do the same. The park is fun this days when is full of people, but can be quite dangerous the other days of the week. Here you can be robbed even with violence, so try to not go alone. Same applies to the city in general. Try to stay just were is other people and you will see just the nicer face of the city.

Second visit for me. Great to see the Immortal Tricolor beat Tombense 3-0 on 16 July 2022. Crowd at 25,000 and enjoyed every minute of the faithful fan songs.

Great and modern stadium, home of Grêmio one of the most traditional Brazilian football teams.They don't sell beer inside and there is a metro station quite close. If you are not from the city i suggest to take a cab or Uber.
We went for the Guns ‘n Roses concert. Very good stadium with good structure. Just be careful on the surroundings, when getting there or when going home.
Very nice soccer stadium in Porto Alegre. Architecturally outstanding. Just think is important after the game to have a better organization to exit the area.
