Nature & Parks
Nestled on the windswept Rhins of Galloway peninsula, Logan Botanic Garden is a remarkable oasis that showcases an impressive collection of exotic plants. Established in 1869 and now part of the Edinburgh Botanical Gardens, this hidden gem thrives thanks to its unique microclimate influenced by the Gulf Stream.
Plenty parking, easy access into shop and reception, very pleasant helpful young ladies ready to explain everything. My wife had a mobility scooter, and the paths etc were wide and easygoing. We spent over 3hrs and the gardens were amazing and very well maintained. We had a lovely wander around.Would recommend

Really nice place well worth a visit some excellent and interesting botanical specemins, and very well maintained. It's good st see young plants coming on as well as the established old ones. The entry fee was very reasonable, as was the tea room. The labeling of plants could have been better for the horticulturally curious. I think they're missing a trick not selling many of the interesting plants you see in the garden in the garden centre. I'd have loved a snow gum or southern beech.
Simon J — Google review
I wish this was closer to home, we happened to visit in particularly good weather that will only have worked in their favour, but the gardens are stunning and very well kept. All of the staff that we ran into (either on the grounds or in their shop) have been very friendly and helpful. It's worth noting that they don't allow dogs in the garden (although they allow you to enter and exit as you please) so any dogs would need to stay with the car, there are parts of the carpark with shade. Mobility around the gardens is pretty accessible though there are a few places with steps that, if avoided, mean you'd miss out a whole section of the gardens. In short, it's well worth a visit only dogs and wheels may be an issue
Spike N — Google review
What a beautiful and fascinating place this is. Positioned on the gulf stream, it is full of unusual plantings, including gigantic gunneras and forests of tree ferns. We visited in mid July, when admittedly, the weather was incredible, but did not see one plant that looked sorry for itself. You always see plants past their best in gardens, but not here. The ground staff are all friendly and approachable, with a wealth of knowledge. Being part of the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, Logan holds collections of many unusual plants. The cafe has some great food and cakes, and the staff all smile (imagine that)!! I would definitely recommend a visit.

Allow yourself an absolute minimum of two hours, but do stay longer. Beautiful gardens all set in fabulous Dumfries and Galloway. There are wheelchair/scooter friendly routes ( always check in advance ) Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Fantastic garden with amazing colours and variety within a peaceful setting and well designed style. Friendly cafe staff with plentiful seating and tasty produce. Picnic tables are a fair walk from the car park it should be noted. Represented good value for money for the £16.80 entrance fee we paid for 3 tickets (with BBC GW pass), though am quite sure we would not have paid the full £27 otherwise.
Joshua T — Google review
Cozy, easy, meandering walk through mature, diverse, gardens and greenhouses. Well-situated restaurant with windows overlooking the gardens serving a full lunch menu. Lovely helpful ladies in the gift shop. Definitely worth visiting. The drive along the Rhinns of Galloway coastline is as much a treat as the destination!

Seriously lovely place to visit. The gardens are spectacular and we did see the red squirrel! The staff in the garden cafe were absolutely lovely as well. Thoroughly recommend it.

Beautiful place, highly recommended for a walk around the gardens.

Kept meaning to come along here when we're down this way and finally decided the weather was beautiful and for 6 quid entry each it was a steal. The gardens are absolutely gorgeous, the walks give way to amazing views in an idyllic setting. The green walk is listed as 2.5 hours, but we achieved it in around 1.5 hours walking at a normal speed including stopping to sit and take pictures. Very much worth the visit and there is a small café on site for a wee coffee and cake. Lunch is between 12 and 2.30, but cakes available all day.
Steven W — Google review
Great place to have a walk and explore, really enjoyed it! The jubilee trail was a win for the kids. We were disappointed that workmen started to carry out maintenance on the sewage pipes at lunch time within a few meters of the outside dinning area, the smell was unbearable. This was the only negative of the day. A play park would also have been a welcome addition.
Colin N — Google review
One of the best gardens ever! Plenty of walks, many different sections. Great day out for the familu. Worth every single penny to get in.
Mr M — Google review
Stunning grounds to walk around. A real oasis of mature manicured gardens. A reward of great coffee and freshly baked cakes await after the long walk around the castle grounds. I'll definitely be back to explore more.
Gordon R — Google review
Beautiful place, stunning views, amazing walk, just lovely to get lost in, as well as little tea room and gift shop at begining or end on site... Two castles within the ground to look at too definitely worth visiting. Beautiful gardens and countryside to explore
S — Google review
We went there for the pumpkin trail which was simple but great value for money as they got a custom package with a selection of sweets at the end. The gardens are huge with glorious views of the hills over the lochs. It felt like a very unique little place. The castle is a great sight with it half covered with greenery but there is little information on its history. I'd highly recommend visiting here if in the area.

Lovely relaxing spa day, we opted for the £165 package and was not disappointed. The facilities are spot with lovely helpful staff along with an amazing view. The lunch was well presented, perfect portion sizes, and exceptionally tasty. The treatments were outstanding, and our therapist was amazing. Would highly recommend and would 100% book again.

Great place. Friendly staff and great food. Ideal place to do nothing and just relax in the pool, sauna or jacuzzi, or, you can use the gym if you like. Massages are also available and according to wife, the woman working there is absolutely fantastic. Great views over Ailsa Craig. Place is pricey but I think well worth a visit. Membership options are available if you're interested and think you'd benefit from it. Lovely meals. Vegetarian options are available.

This place is what I call tranquility. The view is outstanding. The massage is the best I have ever had, the lady was very informative of all the tight muscles and how I can help to prevent it. The therapy beds were self heating. I would highly recommend a treatment. The establishment is very clean all the facilities were amazing. The staff are helpful and friendly. To ease any stress I would recommend spending a day here it's absolute perfection.

First class treatments and service, meal was delicious will certainly be visiting again thank you .
Maureen L — Google review
Been here several times now and always feel the service and quality very consistent. Therapy treatments always very professional in a relaxing atmosphere. Food has always been excellent and it was a lovely touch this time having the chef visit out table to make sure everything was OK. I just needed to ask about gluten free food and the waitress knew immediately what I could have without needing to check. This is my go to place for the ultimate relaxing break, with a view to die for! Will be back without a doubt. Thank you Pebbles Spa.

Fantastic spa. I had the hot stone massage and a pedicure and both were excellent. So relaxing! The pool and jacuzzi were lovely, changing facilities were clean and the food in the bistro was excellent too. Everything was done to a high standard and looked beautiful. Stunning views over to Ailsa Craig too, even on a rainy day.

Beautiful caravan park. Absolutely well looked after and nice and peaceful lots of wildlife like rabbits and duck pond is Absolutely beautiful there's also a lovely little play area which my son enjoyed.
Laura — Google review
Lovely caravan park in beautiful setting, would definitely go back. Great for kids. Pity the pool and teen room were out of action but kids were happy roaming about. Nice wee bar with friendly regulars too.
Morag M — Google review
The site is in a stunning location easy to find all the caravans are privately owned the site is well maintained clean tidy and everyone is nice and friendly. You have to book the pool but it’s no bother the lady in reception is super friendly. We stayed in Westmorland 32 and it’s great the reason for 4 stars is there is not much for the kids to do the park is tiny and rundown needs some tlc and it says that there is somewhere to get food and drink but this is only available Friday Saturday Sunday so most people on holiday Monday to Friday you will have to stock up on food or travel 30 minutes to the nearest town to eat out bit of a shame for the site they would do well. Anyway it’s still worth staying here
Adam C — Google review
Enjoy my every visit to this place. Decent site if you want peace and quiet.

Lighthouse Holiday Cottages at the Mull of Galloway

Mentioned on
15 lists
Self-catering accommodation
Sights & Landmarks
Lighthouse Holiday Cottages at the Mull of Galloway offer a stunning location on the Rhins of Galloway peninsula, boasting breathtaking seaside views and access to the southernmost point of Scotland. The lighthouse, built in 1830 by Robert Stevenson, stands atop a 260 ft.-high cliff and provides an unforgettable experience for visitors. Exploring the Mull of Galloway trail allows you to witness seabird colonies, dramatic cliffs, and picturesque sunsets.
Lovely cottage, nice and clean and spacious, fantastic location, very remote you'll have to travel 4 miles to the local pub or shop, but that made it even more appealing ,there are people visiting during the day but after 5pm we had the lighthouse and grounds to ourselves. abundant wildlife, obviously seabirds but we saw dear, seals ,hare's and a dolphin. Great breakfast from the local cafeteria. The staff members at the lighthouse were very friendly and welcoming, as were all the locals, they made us feel welcomed. As Arnie said "ill be back ".
Pamela S — Google review
We stayed in the light keeper's cottage at the Mull of Galloway lighthouse in August 2024. It was an amazing holiday - the really special thing about it being the location at a real historic lighthouse, on high cliffs right out on the end of a promontory. The cottage was beautifully set up for four people, and very spacious. The back rooms looked straight out onto the sea. The staff at the lighthouse were super nice and friendly, and they even sounded the foghorn, which was quite an eerie sound. We had very mixed weather including rain, high winds and thick fog, but honestly it was exciting being in a lighthouse in those conditions! The cottage was also dog friendly which was one of the reasons we originally chose it. Totally recommend this place if you like something different and original, and a really stunning location.
Helengrantsays — Google review
The lighthouse visit was a decent experience overall. The structure itself was impressive, standing tall and guiding ships with its beacon. The guided tour provided some interesting insights into the lighthouse's history and operation. However, the limited accessibility to certain areas was a slight disappointment. The views from the top were picturesque, offering glimpses of the surrounding coastline. It's worth a visit for those interested in maritime history, but it may not be the most captivating attraction for everyone.
Felipe A — Google review
I come here every time I stay at my caravan. I love to learn about the history, the heights and cliffs are very scary when you first see them and the shop is great with nice ice cream. The actual lighthouse I’ve only been up 1 or 2 times it was fun at the top but the stairs are tiring. My favourite place is probably the visitor centre since they have bones and skulls I can touch(most of them) I love collecting bones and skulls and I have a collection of a couple such as stag, foxes, birds and hedge hog the biggest one is a pig skull.
Liam E — Google review
We as a group never stayed in the cottages as such, we went to take night photos of the light house. So my 5 stars need to not count as they mean nothing for this review. However I didn’t want to give a 1 star as this could look negatively on the business. Other than that what a beautiful location. No light pollution and you can see the milky way with the naked eye. Well worth a visit on a clear night.
Morgan P — Google review
What a beautiful place to visit. Free car parking and toilets on site - there is even a cafe ( however we did not go there). The drive up to it is a narrow road but there are plenty of passing places, and as you drive up there were cows and their calves all around us freely wondering. There are various different walks and benches dotted around so that you can sit and take in the views. The lighthouse was not open so if you specifically want to go inside - checking out the opening times is a must. However the views are amazing, you can see across to the Isle of Man and on a clear day the coast of Ireland. And if you are very lucky, there is even a chance of spitting dolphins, basking shark and puffins.
Katie P — Google review
We visited on a beautiful sunny day at the beginning of March, which was lucky as the cafe is not dog friendly. We sat outside with our 2 dogs and had something to eat from the cafe which was very nice but I do think they could set up part of inside to allow dogs in especially as there were a lot of people there with dogs. The lighthouse itself is impressive and was being painted when we were there. We couldn't go inside but the walks around are breathtaking and you can easily spend some time here taking in the views. You can also see the meeting of tides there which is a strange sight. Well worth visiting.
Claire N — Google review
A really interesting place to visit. A trip up the lighthouse is well worth it. We could see for miles around. The exhibition is really interesting too and includes original diesel engines for the fog horn. And they work! We also visited the adjacent cafe for a coffee and cake. Will be back again, and appreciate it being dog friendly.

Culzean Castle, a grand structure dating back to 1569, boasts opulent features such as a lavish round drawing room and an impressive oval staircase. The castle is surrounded by a deer park and offers visitors plenty of activities nearby. Ayrshire, the castle's location, is home to various attractions including stunning beaches in Ayr, Prestwick, and Troon with views of Arran.
One of the best national trusts we have visited. English national trust members can get in using their passes also. Staff were really friendly, the grounds, gardens, house, cafe all great. The play area was “the best ever” from my 5 year old and we all had fun on it. Really safe but adventurous for young ones.
Louise — Google review
Beautiful, even though the castle is a bit on the excessive side is is worth seeing once. The fact the guy built a distressed vanity arch at the front because he liked the look tells you that. But the grounds are beautiful and you can bring your dog. 640 acres to explore and some truly stunning views
Ever1881 — Google review
Culzean Castle was beyond exceptional! The grounds are massive and magical, and the castle itself is stunning. I absolutely loved the orangery and learning about its history, and honestly, a whole day wasn’t enough to take it all in – I can’t wait to go back. We had a wonderful guide but also enjoyed exploring the castle at our own pace. The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, sharing fascinating historical stories that made the visit even richer. The gift shop is a must-visit, with lovely local products that help support the castle’s preservation. It’s also perfect for relaxing – you can sunbathe, take in the scenery. B sure to also enjoy the views of the ocean. Highly recommend for a day trip or excursion; it’s truly a magical experience
Mary S — Google review
Interesting place. Very grand and lots of historic artefacts as you walk around the one way system. Lego hunt was live while we visited which was a great little extra for the kids! There is also a massive playpark in the estate which is probably the best playpark I've ever seen seen! If I went to this when I was a kid I know I'd have absolutely loved this!
Allen M — Google review
Here is a beautiful castle right on a cliff overlooking the sea. A must to visit this huge estate that was once a private home and to see how the wealthy once lived there. It’s fully restored with lots of extravagantly furnished rooms. There is a huge collection of pistols and weapons to see, a fine display on the walls. It has a walled garden, a large grass garden and forest around it with many trails to walk and to enjoy the sea views. The staff were very good and eager to answer my questions. There are places to stay on the estate and they also host weddings and corporate event events and private parties. It’s a busy place. Of course there is a coffee and gift shop and there was lots of parking, but it does get very busy with tourists.
Don L — Google review
Beautiful grounds, gardens and beaches to walk around . The castle is very well maintained, with regular tours and knowledgeable staff on hand. I can easily spend a couple of hours here exploring. And the deer! They are beautiful 🥰
Clare W — Google review
Beautiful castle right on the ocean with massive gardens. Arrive early to have plenty of time to see the whole site. Take your entry ticket WITH you to the main castle so you don’t have to return to your car for proof of purchase of castle access.

Love bringing the family here! Our little boy loves hunting out all the rock pools at the beach. The food at the various cafe’s are all really nice. The outdoor play park is also amazing! There is so much to do here - something for everyone!

What a lovely peacful, stunning place on such a beautiful sunny day The gardens are an explosion of colour, set adjacent to historic Brig'O Doon. Great information on the world famous poet and amazing statues of two of his greatest characters Soutar Johnny and Tam O' Shanter. Free entry is a real gift.

A beautiful setting to enjoy the history of Robert Burns. Free admission and you can go to the upper part of the monument by a spiral staircase. Robert Burns cottage and museum are close by as is Poet's Path, Brig o'Doon and Auld Kirk.

Burns Monument and the Memorial Gardens are beautiful. The tulips and blossom trees were stunning. I really enjoyed strolling around, then sitting on a bench in the sunshine, admiring the view.
Mich E — Google review
I really came here to see the Burns Monument. Turns out it's currently being refurbished. The monument is currently surrounded by scaffolding and fenced off to the public. The gardens are nice, but that's not what I wanted to see. This place is right next to the Brig O'Doon and 5 minutes walk to the Burns Birthplace Museum. So it's not too much of a detour. If you only want to see the monument, then it's a bit of a disappointment.

Was a great wee day we went to Robert Burns cottage then walked down to the museum was lovely in the sunshine the grounds were well kept and clean and tidy, staff was lovely welcoming and helpful, well sign posted and the museum had loads of original written work by Robert Burns and the kids enjoyed the interaction stuff and the park outside, we never ate anything in the cafe, but lots of choice, glad we visited

Interesting visit for anyone interested in this iconic poet, cottage set in pretty grounds, car parking is efficient, toilets situated just before entrance to cottage, small place as you can imagine, the actual museum is situated approximately 20 minutes walk from the cottage also the cafe, you can drive however you would miss some of the ambiance of the place, well worth a visit
Russell T — Google review
Lovely atmosphere with rich and engaging exhibits that give real insight into Robert Burns’ life and work. The café is surprisingly good too, with a wide variety of food. Overall a very enjoyable visit and well worth it.
April L — Google review
We had a day trip out to the Robert Burns museum and cottage and found both extremely interesting. The museum tells the story of his life and writings, we were surprised by the amount of music and songs he wrote as well as poetry. There are a lot of artifacts tracing his whole life and writings. The carvings of the Tam o' shanter story are excellent and well worth a look. There is also a very good restaurant there with a varied selection of food and drink. We took the poets path to the Burns Cottage but there is another car park there if you want. The cottage is well laid out and gives you a good idea how they lived back then. Outside the museum you can walk to the Burns Monument and gardens and not far from this is the Brig O'Doon bridge. All the staff we spoke to were really friendly and helpful and made it a good day out. Steve and Jenny
Steve — Google review
We only did the gardens and the walk to his birthplace as the museum isnt dog friendly. This was free and worth a look around. Good to see BrigaDoon too.
Matty S — Google review
An interesting time looking around the museum, used our NT membership. Went to view Brig a Doon and walked the Poets path both ways and enjoyed the sculptures beside the path. Didn't have time to visit his actual birth place, viewed it from the outside only.
Ian K — Google review
The museum is excellent, a good hour or so to look around, well put together with interactive displays to maintain engagement. The shop appears quite pricey (NTS comparable), the RBB cottage could benefit from some information boards..., the cafe (visited twice in two weeks) was excellent the first time with very friendly staff, accommodating and helpful, the second visit was disappointing (different staff, different attitudes). Good size car park nearby (50-100yds), 10 min walk to RBB cottage or a short drive to the adjoining car park there.
Joshua T — Google review
Great museum, gardens and monuments in tribute to the life of Robert Burns. Loads of his possessions, letters and manuscripts to see. The Brig a Doon bridge and Burns Monument are just a 2 minute walk from the museum. A must see if you are in Ayrshire.

Rozelle Estate is a breathtaking 37-acre haven nestled in South Ayrshire, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Ayr. This enchanting estate boasts an array of attractions, including a museum and art gallery, all set against the backdrop of stunning country grounds. Nature enthusiasts will delight in the diverse wildlife that calls this park home, with birds like collared doves and blue tits flitting about among the lush woodlands.
Nice place for a day out. There is an art gallery with paintings for sale or just to see. Hungry? Grab a nice light lunch at the tea room. Very tasty sandwiches, wraps, or paninis. And the cakes are amazing, with specialty teas and coffee. Go for a long or short walk and take in the sights at the scenic park. Feed the squirrels and birds and see some of the art displayed on the grounds.

A lovely estate and house. An exhibition of Tam O'Shanter, military items and a massive post card collection. A tea room has delicious food served by great staff. Disabled parking by the front door and a lift. Easiest to enter the lift by the back through the Court yard. There are some interesting very old trees. A visit is recommended.

Beautiful place, I had a great time with my friend. We went on Sunday, the restaurant wasn't busy so we walked in. The pasta was really good. If you like to have afternoon tea book it before a day.

Rozelle Park situated in South Ayr is a beautiful public park that is well worth a visit. The park has a museum and art galley that is free to enter. The park has many wicker and stone sculptures in the museum gardens, The crowning glory of the park is the remembrance garden that has many wood carvings of the first and second world wars.

Lookouts
The Great Union Camera Obscura is a fascinating and unique attraction in the UK that showcases the clever engineering of the Victorian era. This relic from the 1890s offers visitors an opportunity to observe the arrival of ferries, while providing great views of Douglas and Marina drive. It was purely built for tourists and still functions as designed, making it an amazing example of Victorian craftsmanship. The museum volunteers are knowledgeable and provide additional information to enhance visitors' experience at this intriguing location.
Interesting place to see. Not many left like this in the UK. Clever Victorians. Purely built for the tourists. Great views of Douglas too. Watch out for the flag. If it's flying they are open! Near Marina drive. Another great place to have a long walk with practically no cars about

The big country route offers stunning views and the opportunity to challenge yourself with an extra 30 miles to Newton Stewart. The trails are well-maintained, offering superb hiking and cycling experiences. Additionally, the area boasts beautiful scenery including hills, lochs, rivers, waterfalls, and woodland.
Brilliant place, thoroughly enjoyed it for both walking & MTB. Jaw dropping scenery, hills, lochs, rivers, waterfalls & woodland. Trails are superbly maintained for hiking & cycling. Cafe is spot on & reasonably priced. Highly recommend.

Brought my son here who isn't a hugely confident cyclist, so the green and blue trails were perfect for him to get some experience. Well maintained and a nice place for a gentle cycle

Fun frosty ride. Cycled a short section of the National Cycle Network Route 7 before completing one loop of the Green route before it went dark. Will return in warmer weather to explore more of the trails

Loved the trails. Would have been 5 stars but the staff at the cafe were exceptionally rude and slow.

Great spot for our first experience of the 7stanes. The Blue is an easy trail, with great views, not many technical features but a nice ride all the same! Would love to see a Red trail here! Great access for our motorhome, fab walks too!

If you need adventure- that’s the place. Done long loop.
Crafty W — Google review
I’m only giving this 2 stars because this trail needs the signage sorted out and made clearer! My fiancée was doing this circuit yesterday and as she left Newton Stewart and headed towards the black loch section, the signs disappeared and as the trail wasn’t marked she ended up cycling on the main road, as this section is in a mobile reception black spot she had no way to contact me (I was her support vehicle waiting at the black loch) I’ve marked the section that needs to be checked so this doesn’t happen to others.

St. Ninian's Cave is located in the picturesque area of Physgill near Whithorn, offering visitors the chance to explore a sea cave where St. Ninian is said to have had a hermitage. The stony beach provides a perfect setting for a leisurely stroll, and the surrounding wooded area adds to the natural beauty of the location. Accessible after a short walk from the parking area, this site offers an opportunity for peaceful reflection and appreciation of its historical significance.
Great views, cave itself is not accessible right now due to risk of falling rocks. We made some stunning photos and with the car park nearby, it was perfect for a walk with our dog.
Monika T — Google review
Was my second visit my first was over 15 years. Loved the walk down to beach also 2 other lovely walks which I did part off. My only problem was the beach hated walking on it but plenty off rocks to sit on and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Fiona D — Google review
Beach is pebbles and a HARD walk, cave was closed off so didn't get to see the cave itself. But it was a beautiful walk down and back from the carpark.... So walk good, cave not so much as couldn't actually get close - for safety reasons so I do understand, but still worth a wander
Paula S — Google review
It is a nice walk to the coast to see the cave, it is a pebble beach, but when you get to the cave it is fenced off due to potential rock fall, so if you don't mind that the coastal scenery is wonderful.
Spider — Google review
Great walk from the car park - about 1 mile. The weather on the day was rough but we enjoyed the walk and the waves at the beach. We haven’t met a single person along the route. As previous reviews state, the cave is quite small but still magnificent. Knowing that the cave might have been used a retreat hideout for early Christians adds to the significance of this site…especially on a stormy day like we’ve experienced!
Michał N — Google review
A super walk through the glen to the beach and then the lovely pebble beach leads to St Ninians Cave. Most has now been degraded away over time, but for fans of The Wickerman it’s exactly like the film. It is still shut due to rockfall danger, but you can easily see it from the beach.
SpiritofSilver — Google review
Cave 'technically' closed see photos easy to get around but given its a mile and a half from carpark a notice to this effect would be handy there
John F — Google review
The cave is as expected. As a few other people already mentioned it is closed due to a danger of collapsing. The stones on the beach are quite straining to walk on as well.

Galloway Forest Park is a vast expanse of natural beauty, offering miles of forests, scenic hiking and biking trails, as well as fishing spots. It's known for being the best place in Scotland for wild camping in campervans and motorhomes, with 97,000 hectares of forest making it the UK's largest park. The park encourages wild camping and has a designated dark sky for stargazing.
I have been to two sites within the forest park, Kirroughtree and Glentrool. Both outstanding area's of natural beauty. Whether you are walking or on your bike, you will not be disappointed. The Forestry and Land Scotland, obviously do an incredible job of keeping these area's for all to experience. Well done to all of those who work there 👏

A beautiful place! Visited at the end of June and we had a mix of sun and rain. We drove over to Kirroughtree vistor center and did the yellow trail, which took a couple of hours at a slow pace. Then went on to see the deers at Red Deer Range, highly recommend! You can take them an apple or carrot and they will get up close to you. Then we drove along Raidors Road, which wasn't really worth it. Overall, a beautiful place to visit and lots to see and do!

Great day out here with 2 x Labradors. Completed several of the trials, brilliantly signposted, great paths, dogs were safe off leash. Some crossovers on gravel roads, but nothing too long. Did 7.5k circular and crossed paths with 2/3 ppl and dogs max.

Very enjoyable visit despite the evening turning cloudy, still learnt a lot. We'll be back to try again sometime!

We've been there a few times in the past. Interesting guests, presentations and equipment. But... We would be coming more often but the road puts me off. It's a tyre slasher in places and very uneven. Could only be fun in a 4x4. And the opening and closing gates? C'mon... People have been complaining about the access road for years but nothing is being done about it. Surely must be worth upgrading to bring more people in and therefore more money? Unless it's only for people who can afford a 4x4? I hope I'm wrong as it should be accessible to all. Speaking of. The place is NOT ACCESSIBLE for people with disabilities. Very disappointing.

Was an interesting and fun night out! Never realised there was somewhere like it nearby and it was worth the trip! The staff were very helpful and obviously knew a lot about the stars. The interactive science exhibit was also interesting and fun to see. Getting up the hills towards it can be difficult with some of the hills being quite steep. My Golf managed it but it struggled a tiny bit

We loved this place. Will 100% go back. It was 100% cloud cover and chucking it down when we visited so we experienced the "plan B" which was still very informative and worth going along too. Only thing to note is that the drive to it is very windy with very bad deep gravel roads so just take care and maybe don't drive anything too fancy or low! Bare this in mind for your journey time too as it took us considerably longer to get there than google had suggested, albeit I imagine this was mostly down to the atrocious weather!
Lisa M — Google review
Lovely experience overall! It was beautiful looking up at the stars and I got a fantastic shot of the moon with my mobile through the telescope! We were a bit nervous driving up in our Ford Fiesta, but we made it in the end! It was ~quite~ cold despite us both having gone in August & making sure we were well-dressed for the weather.

Myself and my husband had our wedding here back in 2022. The venue and staff were absolutely incredible. Gorgeous venue, stunning views and setting, and the day flowed absolutely seamlessly. Our coordinator Jo on the day was nothing short of an angel. In the lead up to the wedding, staff were so helpful via email and phone with any questions or queries we had. A special mention to the staff on the day. Nothing was too much to ask, they even sewed a couple of my bridesmaids in to their dresses last minute when we had a bit of a mishap. Would absolutely recommend GG's yard to any couple looking for a wedding venue. We still get comments almost 3 years on about how good the venue was, how stunning it was, and how good the food was. 10/10. Can't wait to come back and visit hopefully this year at some point.

Attended a wedding here with 2 children and although the location was lovely , outwith the actual wedding the place is closed. No place to have breakfast or get something for the children. Felt stranded as we do not drive and had to get back to Edinburgh. No staff on site to help and miles away from any shop or bus stop. The place is not suitable either for anyone with mobility issues as the pods are on steep hills. We dont recommend this place without a car

Our wedding weekend in September at GG's Yard was nothing short of amazing—we truly could not have asked for a better venue. The entire experience was seamless, starting with our fantastic pre-wedding meal at Gather the night before our wedding. It was a perfect way to start off our wedding celebrations and allowed us to get excited with all our nearest and dearest. The food across the entire weekend was amazing, commented on by all our guests. What truly set GG's Yard apart was the dedicated team. The staff were amazing from start to finish, offering unparalleled service and support. They helped us with anything and everything we needed, ensuring the entire celebration felt stress-free and perfectly managed. Five stars across the board for the venue, the food, and the incredible people who made our day perfect!

A fantastic purpose built wedding venue with amazing views of the Scottish countryside. A stunning interior which mixes old style stonework with a modern twist and superb backdrop onto the Irish sea on a sunny day. The food was exceptional and all our guests complemented this during the day - portion size and quality! Food and drink service on the day was also superb, a real high quality on offer with all requests adhered to. The staff are extremely friendly and on the day couldn't do enough for us to help make our day special. We would highly recommend anyone to go and take a look at this beautiful place for their big day, we wouldn't change a thing!

Terrific wedding venue. Very big spacious area. Plus lovely wee breakout areas with comfy chairs n couches if you need a wee break from the madding crowd 😀

Our wedding was truly beautiful and magical - a special mention to Zoe, Julie, Jo & Jacqui who made the lead up and the day of our wedding so perfectly timed and special. Jo made sure our day was the day of our dreams and checked in at every moment she could - everyone adored her and still mentions how attentive she was! The photos speak for themselves with the beautiful venue and views. Everyone commented on how perfect the venue was - we couldn’t fault a single thing it was flawless since the moment we arrived. Our wedding meal and canapés were absolutely amazing and the sharing banquet is a rare option in venues but our guests really loved it as much as we did. The lodges have all been beautifully done with some new touches added. We have been coming here since 2020 every year and we never get bored of it - so glad we chose to get married in a place close to our hearts 🤍✨✨ And beautiful surroundings including the gorgeous beach nearby. A special place all around.

We had our wedding at GGs two weeks ago and honestly couldn’t be happier with how everything went. The day ran so smoothly from start to finish, and the team made it feel completely effortless — which we know is no small task! Zoe and Julie, our wedding coordinators, were fantastic — so organised, helpful, and calm throughout the whole process. Graham kept everything running seamlessly behind the bar, and Jackie was incredibly kind and grounding right before I walked down the aisle. The serving staff were also brilliant and really helped create such a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. We had so many lovely comments from guests about how great the food and drinks were — everything was delicious and really well done. The whole team made us feel so well looked after, and we’re so grateful for the care that went into making our day as special as it was. We’d absolutely recommend GGs to anyone looking for a beautiful venue with a truly dedicated team behind it.

We held our wedding here on the 03/05/2025. Since then we have not stopped smiling and talking about how amazing our day was. We would like to start by acknowledging their communication system which they now have in place. They have one coordinator who now see's through your booking right up until the day itself. They ensure no detail is missed. If you are like me and wright lists and have an eye for detail then don't worry, they answered all my emails and phone calls, no question was unanswered. The setting is beautiful and we were so lucky with the weather. Staff were so accommodating opening up the bifold doors as it was quite warm during the wedding meal and happily served our reception drinks and canapes outside. The food and drink were unbelievable. We managed to taste our food options and wine prior to our wedding and were blown away by the portion sizes and choice. Our guests have not stopped talking about this and we would strongly agree they produce the best of Scotland on a plate. We held n event the night before at Gather which again was faultless. Staff were so accommodating and could not have done enough for our guests. They had even kept aside food for those with dietary requirements which we had forgotten about. The venue is so beautifully decorated that you really do not have to do too much for a wedding. The day before, the wedding coordinator helped us set-up and we had three hours which was more than enough time. This then encouraged us to welcome our guests on site and relax before the big day. All of our suppliers mentioned how helpful the staff were. Our day ran so smoothly, timings were on point and their suggestions were greatly received. We had 140 guests and the meal was served very efficiently. I would highly recommend GGs yard and a special mention to Jackie, Jo and Alastair for making our day one to remember forever. Located on the edge of a loch, Clatteringshaws Visitor Centre is a great starting point for exploring the area. It offers opportunities for birdwatching and stargazing in one of the darkest areas of the park. Visitors can enjoy walking and mountain biking, with additional options available on the other side of the park. The center features a lovely cafe offering delicious food and friendly staff, as well as craft items for purchase.
Lovely little place for a lunch. We had the most amazing homemade Cheese & Mustard Scone with chili Jam and a Sandwich. There was loads of homemade options to choose from. Parking is pay and display but reasonable priced (1,50£ 1hr / 2£ 3hr / longer options as well). Indoor and outdoor seating. There is a little shop as well. We really liked the outdoor cleanup crew consisting of about 47 million chaffinches. (count might be a slight exaggeration)

Drove to the carpark and got the good news it was free to park, walked round to the visitors centre to find it is permanently closed ! Toilets still open and clean. It's still a lovely place, but bring your own drinks.

Lovely views, lovely cafe, all dog friendly. The walk to Bruce’s stone was well paved and took about 15 minutes with lots of views. Even the seating area outside the cafe had a lovely view. The cakes and coffee were wonderful. But beware the car park is fairly small.

Sad to drive here to see the visitor centre is permanently closed but had a lovely wee walk down to the loch (bit tricky but enjoyable!) passed by the ruins of an old broch which was cool! The prices for an overnight camper stay were very reasonable, (£7) especially for being in the dark sky park but from the looks of it the parking meters are out of use at the moment (at least for during the day). Dog friendly too!
Megs M — Google review
We took a pit stop here which had a beautiful view of the Clatteringshaw Loch. There were beautiful birds flying around the picnic area as we had our picnic. We also enjoyed coffee, cake and soup from the cafe in the centre, the staff were attentive and friendly. There is a small charge for parking but this helps the natural environment.
Laurence B — Google review
Lovely little pit stop on your drive through the countryside. Good coffee great cheese and ham tosties and lovely scones with cream and jam. Great scenery too look at when stuffing your face. Parking is £1 for an hour and it takes cash and card. Highly recommended
Chris R — Google review
Fantastic place for a pit stop. We stopped here with an elderly relative and our kids. There are some amazing views across the Loch, a fairly short trail and cafe/toilets. The trail is about a mile long and leads to Bruce's stone - it's a fairly flat trail our elderly relative managed to do it fine. On the way back from Bruce's stone look out for two surfboard shaped stones on the right of the path as these mark an alternate route back to the visitor centre along the Loch shore - it can be a bit muddy and is rocky so not suitable for all - but the kids and I enjoyed clambering over rocks and skimming stones. The visit centre has toilets and cafe - open until 5pm. We arrived at 3 and most of the cactus had gone but there were still some very tasty treats to be had. It's quite a busy spot and you have to pay for parking (£1 for an hour). Glad we stopped.
Alan F — Google review
We arrived fromt the amazing Lake District. Rain was pooring. At 1st the site looked ok for a short break but the longer we stayed and explored the more interesting and amazing surpises we enjoyed. The skies cleared. Lot's of beautiful birds and scenaries. There is a cozy visitor centre with nice walk and cycle routes. Tasty bites and drinks. Souvenirs. Friendly helpfull staff. Some fun stuff for the kids. Clean toilets. We paid £8,- to stay for an adventures day and a bright beautifull star filled night. Be aware though that during a nice night fellow nightsky enjoyers park (quite close next to you) and leave on the gravel parking. This might disturb the early sleepers. All with good intend. The parking meters are often out of order so be sure to pay at the visitor centre. The money goes to the maintenance and developement of this beautifull place.

Went for a day out with a friend. We were lucky with the weather it was sunny and hot and we spent a few hours just walking around the estate exploring. Plenty of space to explore and some lovely trails. The walled gardens was beautiful and very well maintained. Large outdoor playpark for the kids too. On site cafe was great, very good value for money and the food was lovely and freshly made. We had baked potatoes, strawberry tarts, a coffee and a cold drink each and spent £33. Seating indoors and outdoors. There are bookable tours of the house itself available although I think you have to book in advance. A beautiful place that you could easily spend a whole day exploring.

Visiting Dumfries House Gardens was an absolute delight. The entire space feels serene and perfectly laid out, with a beautiful flow that invites you to wander and explore at your own pace. The walled garden's gorgeous beds had a plethora of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees, from roses and clematis to gladioli and apples. It was nearly overwhelming. The fruit and vegetable gardens are not only productive but a feast for the eyes, bursting with colour and life. Every corner reveals something new – from vibrant, carefully tended flower beds to stretches of stunning woodland that feel both peaceful and full of character. One of my favourite spots was the picturesque pond areas, where the water reflected the surrounding greenery and created a sense of calm. Everywhere you turn, there’s another hidden gem to admire, making it easy to spend hours soaking in the sights. Dumfries House Gardens is a place where nature, beauty, and thoughtful design come together perfectly – a must-visit for anyone who loves the outdoors.

It is the most fantastic day I have ever had, the staff are so nice and the Clydesdale horses were a bonus. I love excavators and this made my year complete

Fantastic visit to the Blackstone farm. Kids had great fun having a shot in the digger. Magi and John were so friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend. We will definitely be going back at some point. Kids also loved seeing the friendly Clydesdales, the Peacocks, Guinea fowl and characterful pigs.

Additionally, visitors can indulge in delicious snacks and meals while also having the opportunity to purchase chocolates, making kits, and souvenirs from the on-site shop.
Brilliant place for kids. Great indoor soft play area, big outdoor play area. Cafe has a great selection of food, food that we had was amazing. Kids loved the chocolate making. Definitely worth the money.

Great place for family day out. Both indoor and outdoor playgrounds were good fun. Didn't do chocolate making as our wee one is still too small for that, but will be back.
Veronika M — Google review
The children did a chocolate making experience which they loved. Good value for the experience. The place itself offers an amazing indoor soft play and a great outdoor play area too. The menu is lovely, great quality if a slight bit on the pricey side. Overall an excellent place to visit for the family.
Dean K — Google review
The young girl on the desk as we came in was lovely. She was very welcoming and professional. She explained everything very well and really is fantastic at her job. It was such a delight, especially as she was our first point of contact coming in. The other staff were ok but didn’t really go out their way to smile or even speak when they were serving us - but I appreciate they were maybe just busy. The food was lovely and was served in good time. The play area is fantastic and my toddler loved it. Outside was great too, although I did notice some of the equipment was pretty rusty and there was a big hole in the floor on one of the ships. The big slides were so much fun. Plenty of room for the kids to play outside and benches for the parents to sit. Would have loved if they had a chocolate workshop on for my toddler but as far as I could see, these only take place term time. We will be back for one of those. All in all it’s a great place for the kids and the chocolate was yummy. I got some Dubai chocolate and some treats for the kids. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for somewhere to take the kids.

Have several times and the food was really good, this visit the food was awful and I was ill for 24 hours. The tables were not cleaned properly just the tops wiped. Unfortunately children get food around the sides and that was left, this has happened on every visit. Unfortunately I lost a very special ring. Informed a member of staff straight away and was told to telephone the next day. I rang and got an answer machine that went through everything even accounts before it ringing through. It just rang and rang eventually it cut off it cost me over £6 and all for nothing. We went back to see if my ring had been found. Nobody knew anything about my ring. Explained how much it had cost me to telephone them. The lady said we don’t have enough staff to answer the phone. So why was I told to telephone? The soft play and outdoor play is good.
Gill S — Google review
Kids had an absolute blast (aged 2 and 5) making their chocolate- we did the supporting carers booking so myself and my wife could come in and help for free. So not too unreasonable price wise. The indoor and outdoor play areas were so great for the girls to enjoy - they absolutely loved it. I felt the chocolate shop offerings didn’t seem that outstanding. We ended up getting the chocolate stick selection box which was pretty good, but not amazing. Prices seemed a little expensive on the whole in there. However that being said, The hot chocolate was very very good - rich, creamy and sweet - highly recommend getting this when you are there! The staff were really friendly and I would highly recommend this as a little trip when in the area for young children especially when the weather is not so good.
Jonathan L — Google review
Had probably one of the best days out with the grandchildren. The indoor soft play and the outdoor play area were brilliant. The café served amazing food too. Last but not least the chocolate factory. The kids loved making their chocolate using their imagination. I will definitely come back here even if the kids are not with us.
Tommy D — Google review
Went today for our sons birthday today £23 per child, worth the money, they got to make 3 different things, a lolly, chocolate bar and you got to pick what your other chocolate wanted to look like ours did a love heart, dinosaur and a rabbit. The girl who showed and help them what to do was lovely. The soft play is really good, unfortunately they didn't go outside due to the rain but looks really good so we are going to go back when it's warmer. Very lovely staff. Would highly recommend.

Nestled in the picturesque countryside, Cream O' Galloway Ice Cream is an organic farm and ethical dairy that offers a delightful experience for visitors. This working dairy farm features farmer-led tours, ice cream tastings, and even cheese-making courses. While the picnic area could use some sprucing up, it still provides a lovely spot to enjoy your lunch amidst nature.
Great ice cream! The staff were helpful.and friendly and if served a good snack for lunch plus lots of icecream variety! The outside could do with a tidy up but on the whole we'll worth it
Mikey T — Google review
We arrived a little before opening to take a short walk around the substantial grounds. Plenty butterflies and Brambles along the paths. The Ice-cream was especially nice with over 20 flavours to choose from and also Dog friendly flavours. The setup is very nice with plenty seating inside and out and lots of parking. A nice detour in our day
In V — Google review
Visited in a wet day during October break, nice log burner on and seating available (dogs welcome inside, think they have updated their policy as sign outside said otherwise). Had ice cream even though it was not the weather for it lol. Very tasty, but disappointing selection of flavours (maybe about 10). Downside was the staff didn’t seem interested in engaging with customers, or clearing up afterwards. Dirty dishes left on the table next to us even though 4 staff standing at counter doing nothing. Outside looks like good to explore the nature trail and not sure if mini golf was still open due to weather.
Will M — Google review
Easy to follow signs from the A75 - it's a little way, tucked away, surrounded by lovely countryside. The farm itself is way bigger than I was expecting with spaces for ice cream or cheese workshops and, of course shops to buy some from. It's a shame that the outside adventure playground is closed for good - it looked like it was an amazing setup. It's well worth a visit and I for one will be heading there again soon!
Nick T — Google review
Great place for the kids. Plenty to keep the kids happy. Clean tidy and staff super friendly and more than happy to help. The only down would be the food on offer. They would do their self a wonder if they put on more options for their food. My kids had a great time and even the rain didnt dampen their spirts. Plenty of seating inside and outside. The icecream was definitely a great treat and delicious. They even have little birds that will land right next too you at the outside seating to the amazement to my smaller children.
Kirkpatrick J — Google review
This place was on our list of things to do while we visited Dumfries. Called in on a Sunday afternoon. We assumed it must have been a busy lunch service as all the tables were covered in dirty dishes. Ordered lunch which took almost an hour to arrive was set down on the table mixed in with the previous occupants dirty dishes. The ice cream was very nice. Very disappointing and extremely overpriced.
Michelle D — Google review
Stopped to eat our picnic lunch at their picnic area which is in dire need of some attention - overgrown grass and unsteady benches. I remember coming to the place as a child and it being an awesome adventure playground. It has since closed down and nothing more than a small cafe with excellent ice cream with plenty of walking trails. Looks like there is a crazy golf course that also needs major attention. Gutted to see a once exciting tourist stop fall into such dull and sad ways.
Clare — Google review
We spent an enjoyable afternoon here. It's best suited for children 6+ I'd say, with most of the larger attractions geared towards children of that age and above. Staff were friendly and seemed happy enough to help. The zip line and drop slide are great fun, as is the "Go Boing" section. The cafe and shop were reasonably priced and we enjoyed our visit. The ticket prices are pretty steep with children 6+ being charged the same price as adults for admission, although adults who simply want to watch can go for free. All in all, a nice day out.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Threave Castle, a striking remnant of medieval architecture, stands proudly on an island in the River Dee. Constructed in 1369 by Archibald The Grim for the powerful Black Douglas family, this fortress has a rich history that includes serving as a residence for Princess Margaret, daughter of King Robert III. After changing hands to the Lords Maxwell and enduring a siege during the tumultuous 1640s, it fell into disrepair but remains an enchanting site today.
Easy, accessible pleasant walk with lovely views. Added bonus of seeing nesting ospreys.
Julie W — Google review
Lovely walk with Kites and Buzzards overhead. Quiet hides and plenty of lovely benches to sit and think. Very helpful volunteer at the main office and I believe that boat trips to the castle are available when volunteers are available. Sadly not when we visited but that didn’t spoil our enjoyment
Katrina G — Google review
Nice looking castle from afar unfortunately the boats were off the day wee went, lovely surroundings though had a nice walk round.
Tam L — Google review
Unfortunately, this is the third Historic Scotland site I have visited in Dumfries within 4 days that has been closed, with the same signs and no hint of when it might reopen. It's a nice walk across the nature reserve to see the castle from a distance but ultimately it's currently a walk with a view of a castle. It's a shame you can't even go on the boat and walk around the outside, even if you can't go inside.
Elizabeth B — Google review
Great return visit to Threave Castle. We just come for the nature trail walk which was great. Even discovered some new parts this year. Enjoyed watching the Peregrine Falcons on the castle, didn’t see the Ospreys this time. Well worth a visit if you are in the area - especially if you link in with a trip into Castle Douglas and a visit to Threave Gardens!
David C — Google review
Castle on an island. You can't get across but there's a lovely circular walk of about 2k , with lots of benches and bird hides and ospreys were nesting in April. Car park. Allow an hour
S — Google review
A great place for a short walk, 1 to 2 miles. You can't access the castle itself but you get good views of it. The walk has multiple hides for nature watching. We saw ospreys!
James M — Google review
This is a fantastic castle that sits on its own island there is a free car park that leads onto the walk to the castle which is 0.5 miles away the footpath is very well maintained and could be accessed via a good mobility wheel chair. There are various hides for bird watching mainly the ospreys that nest nearby. The castle itself is closed due to the ongoing HSE reviews that seem to have closed almost all historic Scotland sites which I don't agree with as no work seems to be going on at any of them that I have seen but the views are worth while as are the ospreys however I didn't see them on the day we visited there is a visitor center at the car park.

The garden itself boasts stunning water sculptures, heathers, and unique features like the UK's only bat reserve.
Absolutely loved it. Beautiful gardens, so well laid out and cared for. The walled garden was excellent. The house is worth a visit, but don't rush round you'll be in and out in 5 minutes. Take time to chat with the volunteers, they're excellent. They will help bring the house to life

What a lovely relaxing garden! We were able to get in with our English NT membership. It is quite easy to find. Threave Garden is a little hilly, but not too much of a challenge and plenty of seats. Some spectacular trees and amazing flower borders too. Clearly a lot of love has gone into the place. I wish we had the energy to visit the nature reserve...maybe next time! The cafe had a lot of choice and was very clean. The staff were very friendly. There was an amazing view from the terrace, over the gardens and beyond.
Nina T — Google review
Visited Threave Garden with my family , including 3 dogs. The car park was full on arrival at around 1130am but on speaking with staff we were advised to park on the grass verges on the approach road. We all ate at the restaurant and took advantage of the outside seating area, although dogs were allowed inside too. There were plenty of tables. There was a fair selection of foods available and vegan options too. Really reasonably priced also. The gardens were beautiful and very well maintained. Plenty of variety and lots of areas to walk around. Also we were able to get free entry with our English National Trust cards.

Great place to visit, easy walking and very peaceful with some lovely seating despite the number of visitors on the day. Good value and a very pleasant few hours in the many different themed areas of the gardens. The tea room and plant nursery areas were also very pleasant, we would certainly return.

Fantastic garden, well maintained by the garden team and trainees. Lots to see, a full day's visit even if the house is shut on your visit (we went on a Friday in mid-July). Scones were superb, one of the best had in Dumfries and Galloway.

Great spot for a wander, or to look at wildlife. Year round interest in gardens, which are approximately 60 acres. Sensible shoes required if you want to walk the woodland trails. The Walled Garden is very impressive, with fresh fruit and veg to buy!

Must visit if nearby, worth the drive! Will be retuning several times for sure. Definitely get a map at the front desk, this place is huge! Cafe is great, coffee was good and the cakes were fab! Walled garden and the garden of contemplation are worth a visit. The bridge and water feature across from the walled garden is gorgeous and so serene. Even on a rainy day, this place is beautiful. Staff were fab, especially Tracy! Gift shop is good too, lots of choice and not too pricey!

Beautiful place and so impressive. The building is amazing and the tour we had was superb. The lady was very engaging and knew her stuff so the tour was fascinating. This is the home of one of my ancestors, so I was thrilled to be able to walk the grounds! The castle is very large. There are plenty of parking spaces, also an area to park and have lunch. Visitors were having a great time riding bikes while I was there. Dog friendly and sheep for as far as the eyes can see! Visiting the grounds was free and well worth the time as there are several trees on site that are very old and beautiful. Recommend a visit!

Beautiful castle and surrounding scenery. Booked a tour in advance- well worth doing and very interesting. There is a Rembrandt painting that can be viewed as part of the tour- a nice bonus! Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. The gardens are beautiful and well maintained. We had lunch in the Castle Cafe afterwards which was tasty with generous portions. Lovely gift shop with a great selection.

Amazing place to visit with dogs that are happier off lead. Went twice in a week we loved it that much. Great walking routes, did multiple of them. Only paid for parking @ £2.50 for the whole day which is a steal. Cafe was lovely and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend.

Drumlanrig castle and grounds are beyond anything we have been to before, the pink castle is stunning packed full of history amazing paintings and furniture. To be able to get so close to the Rembrandt was a real honour and a highlight of the tour. Gary the tour guide was brilliant really helping us understand the history easily he is very knowledgeable. The grounds are perfectly manicured it’s a real credit to all the staff who maintain the castle and grounds, the castle is still used and lived in by the duke and family he was there on our visit. Make sure to book the castle tour in advance as they fill up quickly

Beautiful grounds and an interesting looking building from the outside. Quite annoyed that the guy who took our money told us we could look round the castle as much as we liked, only to find out he meant from the outside. Seemed expensive without access to the castle.

The museum provides an engaging look into the history of lead mining and is worth a visit for those interested in learning about this industry.
A fantastic day out and worth every penny of the entrance fee, the cafe is great value too. Don't forget to finish your day by following the self guided extended tour, nearly forgot the gold panning 😎

Set in some amazing countryside, with a very welcoming atmosphere. I only expected a mine trip, and got a tour of the village with alot of history and a musuem. With an excellent little tea room serving Full Scottish Breakfasts, and some great walks in the area. Really is a good day out

It was an afterthought that we stopped at this place for a tour of the mines, but it should've been our main event. We were so impressed and had a great time! Our guide Steve was very friendly and informative. There is quite a lot to the mines and you will have to wear a helmet (you are likely going to hit your head as you can't quite stand straight through most of it), part of it drips a lot so take a jacket. Following the tour of the mines, we were guided to the cottages and the fascinating library etc. All in, it took an hour and a half, and then there is a little museum in the main building. We were too late to book online but called up and were told there was plenty of space to just turn up. Free parking and toilets.

What an amazing place to visit. First of all the staff were so welcoming. They were not stuffy but really nice people to be around. Stuart, our guide, a qualified geologist, was amazing. The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven is a captivating destination, especially on a rainy day. It offers an immersive journey through the history of West Cumbria, from early Roman settlers to the industrial revolution and the impact of the nuclear industry on the local economy. Housed in a stunning Georgian building, it features diverse exhibits including local history, archaeology, art, and even a Titanic exhibition. The museum also provides hands-on displays for children and boasts a restaurant with great views from its balcony.
Visited mid-week in July. This is a really nice museum to look around. Really nicely laid out. Start on the top floor and work your way down (and back) in history. The views of the harbour and beyond really stunning. Plenty of artifacts and exhibitions - there is plenty to learn about Whitehaven and the surrounding area with a large area dedicated to Sellafields. I spent about 2 hours here - probably could have spent longer if I had more time.
Alex L — Google review
Very welcoming reception, very informative Great interactive displays and building bricks in the Sellafield exhibition. Can't comment on anything else as we have been here for an hour and my 5yo son doesn't want to leave 😂 Managed to get to the other floors finally, great interactive exhibitions on all levels. A good way to spend 2 to 3 hours

Having visited Whitehaven many times we have never been into the Beacon Museum. We'll be back again. They had a exhibition downstairs which was worth a look, then 4 floors to explore. A brilliant interactive secrion where the kids could explore and be kids. Plus some great views over Whitehaven from the topfloor. We thought we would be about an hour but it easily passed 2 hours. Friendly staff, clean facilities and worth the money. Thank you.

The whole museum had many interactive activities for young and older children alike which was great for our 8 year old, keeping him thoroughly entertained throughout as well as being enjoyable for my 16 year old daughter. We had a great time at the Beacon museum!

Fantastic place for both kids and adults. Much cheaper than most similar places. Staff are very friendly and always seem to be happy to answer any questions. Amazing scenery, fun things to do, could easily spend the whole day here! Lots of slides, tobogins, play park, bouncy pillows, go carts, hay barn, trampolines and a little train ride which you can go on more than once. Fed lots of animals, there was a petting session with guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets and then kids fed milk to the baby lambs. They loved it! Just be aware that some animals, (a goat in our case) are very clever, and whilst you feed another animal they grab the feed bag out of your hands 🤣 All very funny though. Oh and there's a lovely cafe and delicious ice cream to end your day off. Perfect day, thanks we will be back again when next in Scotland! 😁👍

Honestly, one of, if not, THE best open farm we have ever visited across Ireland and Scotland! Loads of space, amazing cafe, plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with the animals and loads of activities for the kids. We loved it and highly recommend a visit for young and old!

Great park, plenty parking and fair priced. Kids absolutly shattered on the way home, just way i like it to be. Guess it was the outdoor activities and dragging the seats to the top of the slides repeatedly. Disappointed boat pond closed due to lack of water And quad bikes also closed. But my kids still had a blast without so 5*

This place was absolutely fantastic family day out, we visited out of season so there wasn't crowds of people. There was so much to do for children and adults alike. Visitors can enjoy the stunning landscape while indulging in delicious scones at the on-site coffee shop.
I was there April 25, access was restricted although you could get inside the cloisters and walk around the perimeter. This is an abbey of some historical significance where John Balliol's mother was buried with her husband's embalmed heart, hence the name. The graveyard is well kept and contains some interesting graves. There is plenty of car parking and clean fresh toilet facilities in the carpark. This place is still an impressive structure

Superb Abbey, peaceful and historic (built in 1273). Can visit the insides of the abbey somewhat thought restrictions do persist owing to the ongoing masonry checks. Hope to revisit once fully open. It is staffed, guidebooks and postcards available to purchase (£3.50 and 60p for non-members, otherwise £2.80 and 48p). Worth a visit in conjunction with New Abbey Corn Mill (5 min walk, 2 min drive). Car park has lots of spaces, yet gets busy as it's a public car park and shared with the Bowls club, New Abbey Corn Mill has 4 spaces.

A nice look around but was covered in scaffolding and closed off for the majority when I visited. It also states donations welcome, then when we walked on site got collared by someone working there stating it's a donations only, which was a bit misleading (I only wanted a picture to be honest).

Beautiful ruin, from inside the grounds and from inside the graveyard. When we went it was a beautiful day too which really helped the photos pop. I managed to get loads of good images which I'll attach a couple but honestly if your looking for something to do and like old architecture and old overgrown graveyards this is the place I got a few very gothicy pictures. Think I paid £2.50 to get inside the Abbey and didn't pay for the kids. Definitely worth a visit, even with Harris Fencing and Scaffold up inside the Abbey.

Great easy stop. Plenty of parking. Most of the Abbey is behind a fence but the cemetery is very interesting to walk around.

Ruins of an abbey in New Abbey. At the moment it is free to enter, but they are looking at charging in the future. There is a free car park just outside, but there are no other facilities at the site.

Free public car park as no Historic Scotland parking available. Was met by very enthusiastic custodian, who volunteered information freely about the Abbey. Worth a short visit, due to partial restrictions caused by masonry issues.

Historic Scotland were busy with restoration when we visited, still able to walk around the outside with the dogs, worth a visit if you like ruins

History Museums
Dumfries Museum and Camera Obscura, situated in Dumfries & Galloway, is the largest museum in the region. It serves as a treasure trove of history, showcasing the story of the land and people of the area.
A great place to visit with lots of searches for the kids (find all the historic lego figures, find all the animals, search for all the faces etc) this place is free to enter but sadly on the day we visited the weather was poor so we couldn't access the camera obscura which is chargeable to see out over Dumfries. The museum has just about everything, lots of interesting artifacts about the area, the building itself is beautiful and the staff were on hand to answer any questions, we'll worth a visit.

Very large museum in Dumfries with lots of variety to the displays. Shop on site (though magnets on display had very limited stock (1) so we were disappointed). Free entry, toilets available and drinking water. Worthy of several hours visit to take everything in.

Wow! What a find. A beautiful building filled with so much history and a joy to see so many artifacts from times gone by. You could spend hours and hours at the muesum. Thank you to everyone involved with makking a truly wonderful experience. The gardens are also wonderful and the views across Dumfries are amazing too. Well worth visiting if you get the chance.

Really enjoyed our visit to the museum, The kids had fun looking for the mini lego figures hidden amongst the exhibits and getting to touch things and trying on the costume, and going up to see the camera obscura was really good great to see and the guide was very knowledgeable and kept us entertained showing us it. It's free to visit the museum but you can give donation at the door but you do pay to go up to the camera obscura but both worth it.

This place is fantastic - and it's free. I took a 6y and there was so much to do. Lots of items to handle, presented at under 2 feet from the floor so easy to reach and replace. The content is interesting to locals and visitors alike. Dressing up is available throughout and multiple worksheets/Lego hunts etc help to engage different ages of younger kids, allowing older kids (grown ups) to be afforded the time to read at their own pace. Staff are easily found, cheerful and helpful, with pride in the building and its contents. We were sorry not to get up to the Obscura (for which there is a fee) but I'd highly recommend this for all ages of visitor as I've been several times before.

Incredible little museum showcasing the history and archaeology of Dumfries and the surrounding area. The highlight was most definitely the Roman altar reconstruction showing how vividly it was painted when it was first created. Other highlights include the large telescope and the Medieval stone carvings in the basement of the tower. The most interesting aspect is the connection with the Apollo moon landings in the 1960s. We didn't visit the camera obscura as there was an additional charge. The museum is free to enter although donations are most certainly welcome. The staff were also really friendly and welcoming.

Dalscone Farm Fun is a delightful destination for families with kids, offering a wide range of activities and attractions. In addition to interacting with farm animals like goats, pigs, and sheep, children can enjoy bumper boats, an exhilarating yellow slide, go-karts, pedal-powered "farmari" tours featuring farm animals, tubing, crazy golf, and various playground equipment. Visitors appreciate the well-maintained and clean facilities.
Had a great day visiting here with my two kids. They both loved feeding the animals and had good fun playing on all the kids play equipment. Plenty to see and do. Didn't have any food as we brought packed lunches but we got ice cream and juice and bought stuff from the gift shop. The whole place is lovely, well kept and very reasonably priced. Staff were all lovely too. Would highly recommend coming 🙂

Great place to visit for the whole day ,so much to see and do for kids of all ages. One grandson went missing so we informed the staff who are all connected by radio ,quickly found him. There is a security measure at the exirmt so he wouldn't gave gotten out ,but I am sure he wasn't the first to dissappear behind grandparents back, well done to the staff and the lady who helped. The kids enjoyed the downhill tubes ,the sack slide and especially the pedal karts, the oldest grandson spent about 3 hours going round and round. They got to feed the goat's and donkeys. Big soft play indoors beside the cafe which has a great choice of food and especially the strawberry and cream tarts. We were staying at a holiday camp so only a half hour drive. We live in the north east of Scotland so it's pretty far to drive otherwise we would go more often

Brilliant Farm Park!! We had such a lovely day and so much to do! We always loved Dalscone farm, but we went for the first time since outside play area has been revamped! Wow Dalscone Team! You've done such a great job and thought through everything! Animals are so well looked after and we were impressed with the new addition! Was clean and well stocked up! Icecreams were the best!!! Such a good value for money! All the staff are so lovely and helpful.

Brilliant for the kids. Easily a day out. Expensive day out if yo'ure planning on eating here like we did. But you can bring your own picnic. Lots to do, many many animals that you can feed. We would definitely come back, 100%.

Staying nearby, and the weather forecast wasn't great, so thought we would try this with a 12, 9 and 4 year old - a hard range to satisfy. They all had a really good time ! There are plenty of different things to do - eg the great playground, the slides, feeding the goats, the bumper boats and seeing all the small animals. Plenty of hand washing facilities, really clean all around the park and friendly staff. Will definitely be back when we are next in the area. Oh, and the forecast was wrong - it was really sunny !

If you are looking for a fun day out no matter what the age, whether that be from baby to pensioner, this place really does tick all the boxes. From animals, to go karts, to sandpits, to trampolines, to soft play, to a cafe and so much more, there is definitely enough to fill an entire amazing day out regardless of your age (and in my case with a disability) Really recommended
