Walking the Camino , stopped here on the first night (Saturday) for the night. The waitress from the cafeteria was the front desk person, as well as the only person working the cafeteria. She was very nice, but haggard as she was very busy. They were not serving food that evening, and the town seems to roll up after 6. The rooms were clean and decent sized- the shower in room 106 was great, great pressure and nice and hot.

This is a good hotel in Hospital de Órbigo, with a very convenient position, right besides the gas station and in front of the main road where that are the bus stops to and from the main cities of the surrounding area. They also have a comfortable bar, which serves coffees and breakfasts, as well as some warm dishes for people passing by and maybe waiting for a bus.

(Translated by Google) Every summer we spend a night at this hotel. We haven't been there for 2 summers and it has deteriorated quite a bit. We have had an unpleasant surprise. For starters, they are now pet-friendly, which you have to keep in mind if you don't want to stay up all night with the barking dog next door. The rooms were always simple but on this occasion the bathroom had broken tiles, chips in the bathtub and the broken shower mixer that made it difficult for us to regulate the water temperature. Uncomfortable beds. We spilled liquid on the bedspread and we put it aside so they could change it when making the bed but they put it back on us. In short, it was not a pleasant stay and I don't think we will return, at least until they give their rooms and bathrooms a good renovation. With the competition in the surrounding area, I hope they renew themselves or they will only have the workers in the area as clients.

(Translated by Google) Yesterday we did the caving canyoning route in the Valporquero Cave. The truth is, the activity is a roller coaster of emotions that never disappoints, with a team of guides who perfectly know what they're doing and how to manage the groups under their care. Despite the dangers inherent in any caving and canyoning activity, they know how to instill confidence at all times to make the activity as rewarding as possible. And I say as rewarding as possible because this activity involves a lot of exercise and the groundwater is quite cold, something that the good neoprene gear they provide at the beginning doesn't mitigate. If you decide to do it, which I recommend, enjoy the cave and leave the rest to the guides.

I listened to the explanations he gave to two guys who had no idea and I was amazed: "common sense" and little else, that was the extensive explanation! Hey you! When my group started doing the ferrata, I told the other kids several things to keep in mind (that I have learned from others and I think are essential) and they were super grateful with the joke of "common sense, take care of them as you can" half a ferrata ! Hahaha, thank goodness we got the humor out of that situation. Another day we made a ravine with them, and I don't want to go on any further. There are many companies and I already know that I will not repeat this one! The first day the Ferrata route with Guille and Julián was amazing and the second we did caving canyoning and it was also great. Although the guide was more serious, Alba and Paula were very nice. We booked for dinner at the rural hotel in Cubillas and the dinner was closed, it was delicious, although there was no option to change anything, not even the yogurt for dessert for something else. And the super edge waitress. Breakfast at the hostel itself was luxurious. Thanks also to Mario for his service 😊 (Original) Hemos pasado el finde en el albergue de cubillas de argas y todo ha ido perfecto. Museo del Chocolate

Museo del Chocolate is a classic venue in Astorga that offers a glimpse into the local history of chocolate-making. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing an old chocolate store, a factory recreation, and a souvenir shop. The museum also features tasting areas where guests can sample handmade Astorga chocolates. With laminated paper guides available in multiple languages, including English, visitors can learn about the chocolate-making process and the area's significance as a major chocolate producer.
It's a good place to know the chocolate history in Astorga, and visitors will get a chocolate test of 3 different flavours. I bought some chocolate-soap which I have ever seen before.
YaEn H — Google review
It's very interesting! There is a movie-reel that is of particular interest, and the chocolate-tasting at the end was a bonus. The staff were lovely. My only quibble is that although there were information sheets in other languages available, they contained minimal information. I felt that I had lost out on the whole experience because there was so much I did not understand. Still, I would recommend this museum

Majority of the displays are in Spanish, but they provide a summary sheet that outlines the information captured on the displays. Entry fee includes a chocolate tasting, which was so delicious.

Museo Romano (La Ergástula)

Museo Romano La Ergastula is a small museum in Astorga that showcases the town's Roman heritage. Divided into two floors, it offers a well-presented collection of artifacts and a video on the ground floor that provides insight into the era. Visitors can also enjoy guided tours of the city, which include a visit to the museum for a more illustrative experience. The museum building itself is an impressive Roman artifact and houses many excavated items.
What a great museum this is. In particular, I highly recommend the Ruta Romana tour that departs from here. It is a 1.5 hour tour that takes you to many hidden Roman sites around the city, including an astounding walk through an intake Roman sewer. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and did a great job answering my questions. I believe the tour is only in Spanish, so that would be the only downside for people who don’t speak the language.

The museum is CLOSED. And, surely, they don't mind turning away visitors by not updting their opening hours on-line or on google map but on their glass door. Don't waste your time to come out.

Due to we can't speak Spanish, we got a whole book of the introduction with the museum. The staff there are very kind and friendly, gave us a lots of guidance. But the moving line is not very clear.
YaEn H — Google review
Excellent museum with, very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff. I was given a detailed explanation of the museum which is located in what was thought to have been a Roman prison but also has similarities with a cryptoporticos. The Roman city, its function and the history behind some of the museum artefacts was explained in depth. There then followed a short film with subtitles in English. After the film I was given a book with a detailed English translation for each glass case of artefacts which were located on the top floor of the museum, and which included a horde of silver Denarii. A fascinating museum which I can fully recommend. Also, at 5pm on various days, the museum also offers a very popular 2 hr guided walking tour of the Roman parts of the city.

Excellent explanation of the Roman occupation of Astorga which allows you to see exactly where the buildings were located in relation to the city today. Small but well presented collection and a nice video to give you a feel for the era. The building itself is a Roman artefact.

Ayuntamiento de Astorga

The Ayuntamiento de Astorga is a stunning Baroque building that stands in the Plaza Mayor, dominating the square with its two towers and belfry adorned with shields and sculptures. Dating back to the 17th century, it was built on the site of the ancient Roman forum, whose remains can still be visited in its basement. The central belfry supports a bell and clock, where two Maragatos figures move to mark each passing hour.

(Translated by Google) Astorga's town hall is located on one side of Plaza de España. The town hall building appears to dominate this square, a wide, quadrangular, porticoed pedestrian esplanade formed on three sides by typical popular Leonese houses with arcades, although some of them were recently built in the 20th century. Much of Astorga's daily life is concentrated in this square. It is also an obligatory stop on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, making it one of the busiest and most bustling places in the city. Plaza de España stands on the remains of what was once the forum of the ancient Roman city of Asturica Augusta, originally founded at the end of the 1st century BC as a military camp of the X Gemina Legion, which was responsible for guarding and managing the gold extracted from the nearby Las Médulas mines. This military camp eventually became a civilian settlement years later. Beginning in the 2nd century, already during the Roman Empire, Astorga acquired great strategic and economic importance, largely due to its location at a crossroads connecting Lucus Augusti (Lugo) with Pompaelo (Pamplona) and Tarraco (Tarragona) and with the Silver Route, which connected it with Emerita Augusta (Mérida). This geographical location made Astorga an important city, which gained even greater significance beginning in the 9th century with the discovery of the bones of the Apostle Saint James the Greater by Bishop Teodomiro, which led to the progressive economic and social development of Astorga. The town hall is a late 17th-century building, built in the Churrigueresque Baroque style by the master builder Francisco de la Lastra, who also took part in the construction of Astorga Cathedral. The main façade of the building is made up of three sections. The lower level features a large entrance portal in the center with a semicircular arch flanked by two columns with Corinthian capitals supported by plinths. Above this level is a long, latticed balcony bearing the coat of arms of Astorga (an oak branch). At the top, two balustraded side towers rise, bearing the coats of arms of the Marquis of Astorga and the city. Above the balustrades rise monstrous human sculptures and gargoyles, lending the building an apotropaic symbolism, used for protection and to ward off evil. The towers are topped by tall, slender slate pinnacles on which more human figures and gargoyles can be seen. This upper level is complemented by a central tower with a high relief of two tenanted lions holding the crowned coat of arms of the Habsburg royal house with the symbol of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Above this tower rises a bell gable with a gap containing a bell. This is the Maragatos clock, two automatons placed in the bell gable in the mid-18th century, which ring the bell each hour by striking it with mallets. These figures, a man and a woman dressed in traditional Maragatería costumes, are popularly known as Juan Zancuda and Colasa, and are a true symbol of the city of Astorga. Astorga is a city for which I have a special affection. An ancient town with an important artistic and historical heritage that is worth a leisurely visit, with buildings as important as the 4th-century Roman wall, the cathedral, and the Episcopal Palace designed by Antonio Gaudí (one of the few buildings the brilliant architect designed outside of Barcelona). Not to mention the most traditional dish of these lands, the Maragato stew, a culinary delight.

Mentioned on
1 list
City Hall
Sights & Landmarks
The Ayuntamiento de Astorga is a stunning Baroque building that stands in the Plaza Mayor, dominating the square with its two towers and belfry adorned with shields and sculptures. Dating back to the 17th century, it was built on the site of the ancient Roman forum, whose remains can still be visited in its basement. The central belfry supports a bell and clock, where two Maragatos figures move to mark each passing hour.
Overlooks the plaza which is a great place to rest and have dinner after a long Camino day. Check out the clock tower on the hour.

If we look at more reviews, it has been happening for a long time, both from the store and the factory. Selling expired and spoiled products, and it's still open.

The Palace of Gaudí in Astorga is a neo-Gothic style building, one of the three works by Antonio Gaudi found outside of Catalonia. Its exterior resembles a castle while the interior has a church-like feel. The construction material used is gray granite from Bierzo, and its beautiful stained glass windows add vibrant colors to the interior. Today, it serves as the Museum of the Ways.

Cathedral of Santa María de Astorga

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Cathedral of Santa María de Astorga is a stunning architectural marvel that was constructed between the 15th and 18th centuries. It features a blend of Gothic, Neo-Classical, Baroque, and Renaissance styles, with elements such as the high altar by Gaspar Becerra adding to its grandeur. The cathedral's rectangular layout with apsidal chapels creates a bright and clear interior reminiscent of German Gothic architecture.
Cathedral is just amazing both inside and outside. Highly recommend to visit. The construction of this gothic cathedral was begun in 1471 and lasted until the 18th century. To its original Gothic style appearance were added elements from later styles, such as the Neo-Classicist cloister, the Baroque towers, capitals and the façade, and the Renaissance portico. With a rectangular layout, with apsidal chapels, very clear and bright, it has an architectural closeness to German Gothic.

I'm a Christian Catholic and I am a pilgrim on the Camino of Santiago. I honk it's a complete SHAME to make people pay to enter a church this is just a business nowadays and even Jesus condemned Thai behaviour. I am form Rome and I never payed even for St Peter so it's a complete shame to make me pay to enter the cathedral I don't care about the museum or the audio guide. People wanting to pray should always be allowed into church. Bad don't telle me that it's open 9-10 during mess because being a Pilgrim I just leave at 6-7 in the morning I cannot wait for your commodities. Total complete shame.
Marco N — Google review
The museum is very interesting and the cathedral is awesome, well worth the cost of admission. Photos are not permitted.
Greg T — Google review
Follow the camino as far as Santiago and you see how a church can manage free entry for all and raise funds via a museum ticket. It's scandalous to bar entry to a church unless the public buys a ticket. A church is foremost a place of prayer and should never be a money making venue. To quote John 2.16 'stop making my father's house a market place '.
M O — Google review
8 Euro for pilgrims, I'm sure it's a beautiful cathedral but I'll go to a smaller church that doesn't charge and is ok with a donation

(Translated by Google) We have spent an EXCEPTIONAL afternoon.... from the ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED AND PENSIONERS OF SANTA MARINA DE TORRE, and within the activities of our Cultural Week it was decided to take a train trip from Torre del Bierzo to Brañuelas. With our intentions set, finally 36 friends took the train (a clearly fun experience) and headed to the Brañuelas station. Once there, the main course consisted of the unbeatable and extraordinary visit to its RAILWAY MUSEUM (really, you have to visit it...a unique and inspiring experience), obviously, what can we say about the guide?... a 20, not a 10.... Ana Suárez Nuevo, who with all the professionalism, affection and love put into making this visit a unique and enriching experience. A walk through the railway's past... a more than interesting future and commendable work they have done in the entire environment. Do you want to make a different getaway? Beautiful, fun, interesting???? Come to BRAÑUELAS and you will be able to enjoy the day at its highest level.... As if the visit were not enough... right next to the museum you will find the most delicious and exquisite "foods", on ANDÉN 25, where you can have a drink, or eat a truly luxurious meal... (that is...). Make sure you order everything you want and that way you'll go straight, carefree). Little or nothing to say... a friendly, exquisite and familiar treatment... certainly the 36 of us who made up the group were delighted... It really is very, very worth it! And it really doesn't cost anything to come and enjoy an incredible day.... We could put a thousand photographs, but I especially like this one taken in front of the museum of the entire group plus our guide... THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING... ESPECIALLY TO YOU ANA... an unforgettable day. It is true that I save the best for last.... just like Ana did for us.... If the museum was incredible.... there are no words left to define the visit to the MODEL... and yes, I put the model in capital letters, because it is effectively a MODEL WITH CAPITAL LETTERS.... the whole visit was truly wonderful, but the icing on the cake... the model of the town.... an example of commitment and dedication of which few localities would be able... If this does not convince you, you are lost... you will have a great time...

Language school
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
I had two goals for my time at El Cuelebre: to improve my Spanish and to explore the countryside of Asturias. And the week was beyond my wildest hopes. Alfredo and Jimena are not only incredible teachers but also warm, gracious and accommodating hosts. They readily adapted the daily activities and language instruction to my desires and abilities. I felt immediately at home in their beautiful house and the private bedroom with full bath was large and comfortable. The week, which absolutely flew by, was full of delicious meals and interesting conversations at mealtime as well as during our incredible daily outings. The mountains and valleys of Asturias make for the most beautiful classroom for learning Spanish imaginable. This combination of learning Spanish while exploring the landscapes of Somiedo is a truly unique, unforgettable experience. My time with Alfredo and Jimena took my Spanish to a higher level and I cannot wait to spend more time with them.
Robert S — Google review
El Cuélebre was everything we we hoped for and more. Our twice-daily lessons with Alfredo were perfectly tailored to our abilities and goals. My girlfriend and I speak Spanish at different levels (A1 and A2/B1) and he gave us the option of taking the classes together or separately. We chose separately and he tailored two sets of classes to us individually. Perhaps more important for our learning than even the classes were our conversations in Spanish during the excursions and thrice-daily meals with Alfredo and Jimena. They are both extremely good at talking with Spanish learners: they enunciate clearly (and naturally) and are very good at hearing what novice speakers with thick accents and poor grammar are trying to say. They both speak English fluently and let us choose how much of the conversation we wanted to have in English, for which we chose almost none. They talked with us about Spanish history and culture, cooking, politics, current events, literature, cars, and many more topics. When the topic's complexity exceeded our vocabularies (which was quite common at our early levels), Alfredo and Jimena were both great at explaining the new words in Spanish or providing the English translation. The village of La Peral is very small and very out of the way, but it's really easy to get to since they offer pickup/dropoff by car in Leon, Oviedo, or basically anywhere within a 90 minute drive. El Cuélebre would be worth visiting for Jimena's cooking alone. We spent one week here during a month-long trip eating great food throughout Spain and the best food we experienced in all of Spain was Jimena's. My girlfriend eats pescatarian, which Jimena was able to accommodate with apparent ease. We visited in mid-April and were treated to a couple inches of snow. With no snow boots, we thought we'd be trapped inside, but a 20 minute drive down either side of the mountain range brought us to an excursion in a completely different climate. I learned more than I expected to about the local nature from Jimena like which one type of local mushroom is safe to eat and how to tell bear droppings apart from those of other animals. Our accommodation was wonderful. It has incredible views from the windows, a powerful heater for the cold early spring, multiple desks, a television, laptop computer, power adapters (US, UK, USB), and bookshelf full of books in Spanish (including graded readers). The bedroom and bathroom were very private, connected to the main house via a mudroom. I'm having a hard time coming up with any downsides, disappointments, or areas for improvements. There's a reason El Cuélebre has 66 unanimous 5-star reviews and counting.

I spent 2 weeks this month with Jimena, Alfredo, and Fa at their Spanish immersion school in the mountains of Asturias. I agree 💯 with all other posters about the amazing food, well-planned lessons, fun & challenging hikes, overall comfort, and unparalleled beauty. Alfredo & Jimena offer a unique experience catered to your interests, language & fitness levels. It’s very easy to live and learn at El Cuélebre.

I recently spent 10 days at El Cuélebre and it was an incredible experience. The setting was beautiful and peaceful, nestled in the heart of the natural park. I was there in mid-October and was lucky enough to experience a bit of snow, which added to the magic of the setting. The beautiful walks in the park were a highlight of the trip, and it was a great way to get some exercise and open my mind while learning a new language. The course itself was challenging but extremely rewarding, thanks in part to the amazing instructors, Jimena and Alfredo. Jimena in addition to being a great teacher was a fantastic cook who always had delicious meals prepared. Alfredo was a patient and knowledgeable Spanish teacher, they both made the learning experience enjoyable and engaging. In addition to the language lessons, there were excursions to learn about the local culture, flora and fauna. Another added bonus was their dog Fa who joined us on most of the outings. The walks were easy and enjoyable with epic view to enjoy at every turn. If you're wondering what the accommodation is like... I couldn't fault it. The room was spacious and warm for the Winter weather with windows overlooking the mountains. Personally the experience was really helpful for me as it gave me a tonne of conversation practice. It also highlighting specific areas that I needed to work on, holes in my learning that I didn't notice before. One of the things that I really appreciated about the course was the one-on-one instruction. I sometimes struggle in group learning environments, so this learning method was really good for me. TLDR: fantastic experience, 100% recommend, great way to learn Spanish in a spectacular natural park.

I am so filled with emotions as I reflect on my one week with Jimena and Alfredo in the Cuélebre Spanish course. It has been 2 days since I finished my course and I already miss everything about it very much. Jimena and Alfredo are truly wonderful, caring, interesting, lovely people. They have structured the course in a really fun, stimulating, effective and yet relaxing way. They are both genuinely interested in people, in different cultures, in learning about each person as an individual and this makes for engaging conversations and lots of learning. The food that Jimena makes is healthy, incredibly tasty and reflective of Spanish cuisine and she does it with obvious pleasure and love. The hikes are through breath-taking landscapes and were tailored to my level of physical activity. Their house is cozy, comfortable and beautiful. And the room designated for the students is totally private, comfortable for sleeping, lounging, studying and has amazing views of the hills. I have had many Spanish immersion experiences both in Spain and in Latin America and I can say, 100%, without any doubt that my one week stay in El Cuélebre improved my level of Spanish far more than any other immersion I had done in the past, while also learning so much more about food, cooking, culture, geography, philosophy, history and all that naturally came up in our conversations. And above all, I can say that I now carry in my heart two dear friendships that I cherish very much. I can't wait to go back.

My wife and I have been coming here for the last 4 years, with each years stay for about 10 days. La Peral is a lovely little mountain village. We actually saw and photographed a wild Brown Bear on the edge of the village. It even has a little bar that you can use in your few hours spare time in the afternoons The Spanish Course is total immersion, with 2 lessons a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus a long country walk with conversation. The meals by the way are excellent. I think that this is an excellent way to learn Spanish and thoroughly recommend it

I have just spent a week with Jimena and Alfredo. I fully endorse all the positive opinions left here! I could copy-paste them;-)! Jimena and Alfredo created for me a perfect mix of holidays and work and an equally perfect equilibrium between treating me like a family member and mine and indeed theirs need of privacy. They truly do what they describe on their website: they take into account your needs and preferences, both in learning as in things of everyday life. You get all you need to study (books, laptop , TV, WiFi...) and to relax (a spacious room with a true mountain view, a very comfortable bed, an electric water cooker, a yoga mat and many hiking possibilities - while hiking, you practice your Spanish of course, as Jimena and/or Alfredo will go with you). They are very patient teachers who share with their students not only the rules of Spanish grammar (they do it very well) but most of all their love for their language and country. And last but not least: Asturias is sensationally beautiful. Many many thanks for a fantastic week!

Learning a well language requires complete immersion. And that's exactly what is offered with Alfredo and Jimena at their small school located in La Peral, Somiedo. Every day is filled with classes, from breakfast conversations to talking about the scenery on a hike. The learning experience is tailor-made to your level, and Alfredo and Jimena make sure to integrate your learnings into the conversations so you improve and iron out all your mistakes. Next to learning the language, staying at El Cuélebre is a fantastic experience. Set in the beautiful Somiedo Natural Park, the school has incredible views over the mountains. Every day there's delicious homemade meals to enjoy and there are many hiking excursions to do in the area. For anyone wanting to improve their Spanish, I can highly recommend El Cuélebre. Alfredo and Jimena are not just Spanish teachers, but wonderful hosts, language experts, and great people to spend time with in the mountains.

We have visited at the end of October 😇 we were probably the only people other than another couple we saw on the way there 😊 we were experiencing the rain during most of the day but as we have expected it we were very much prepared. The walk is easy and picturesque so you should expect to stop a few times in order to take photos and videos which may prolong the journey. Except to encounter numerous horses 🐴, cows 🐄 and other animals including birds and dogs 🐕 there’s two ways to take one is a “sunny” road and another is a “shady” one, meaning if you take the second you will walk under trees and the first will be more exposed. If you want to see more animals take the “sunny” route.

I have been hiking close to the Lago del Valle. I easily can say that was on my Top 10 Hikes ever! Such beauty! I am still all in aww. You will get to see a lot of mountains both close by and in the background. You will have lakes as well as you have nature itself. If you pay attention you will find lots of birds, lizards and insects. And I might have been lucky - only few humans. You easily get the chance to forget civilization as only very view buildings spoil the view and you not even have reception for most of the time.

The Cruz de Ferro on the Camino de Santiago is a truly special spot. The iron cross, surrounded by stones and mementos left by pilgrims, holds a deep sense of meaning and connection. The tower stands on an attractive semicircular arch, which belongs to the only gate of the old medieval wall that is preserved today. This access connects the Town Hall Square with the famous Clock Street and the old town. Built in 1567, it is a building of great historical value within Ponferrada. Initially the tower consisted of two bodies that correspond to separate areas where the coat of arms and the clock are located. At the end of the 17th century, a third part topped with a capital that houses the bell was added. Although the most representative element of this tower is its clock, there are other elements with which it shares space. On both sides of the tower we find an engraved shield, while at the top there is the bell, as well as a large spire.

(Translated by Google) More than a century old, it has seen the city grow since it was still a town. It is a plant that announces the arrival of spring in the capital of Bierzo from the old town of the city and one of the most symbolic images of Ponferrada. The wisteria of the House of Shields in Ponferrada is an ornamental tree that, together with the sculptural support that supports it, whose author was Pablo Voces Bello, due to its showiness and size, has earned a place among the most visited and photographed tourist attractions in the town. The tree, which during spring graces Gil y Carrasco Street in front of the city's Templar Fortress, is a symbol of the capital of Bierzo that has come, thanks to its flowering that is always accompanied by intense purple colors, to co-star in the poster for Holy Week in Ponferrada (declared of National Tourist Interest) in 2018. A plant from the New World that has the instructions of the botanist Bernabé Moya for its care tasks, by the City Council workers. When she arrived in Ponferrada it was still a town, and little by little the centenarian lady has embraced the entire history as a city with her life, whether first as a tree with no further attraction, later sheltering a churrería for many years, or now highlighted as another element of the Museum. The 'Lady of Ponferrada' as baptized by the late painter, Francisco Fueyo, was planted in the middle of Gil y Carrasco street presiding over the façade of the middle section of the building, just below an elegant balcony with a simple body on corbels.

Ponferrada Castle, once occupied by the Knights Templar, is a sprawling fortress that offers visitors a glimpse into medieval history. The Spanish have done an impressive job in restoring and preserving this ancient monument. Surrounding bars and restaurants provide stunning views of the castle's entrance. The castle houses a library with rare books, including facsimile editions of works by Leonardo da Vinci. Visitors can explore the many levels of the castle and spend hours wandering through its corridors.
The best in Ponferrada! Very well conserved, nice to walk and beautiful views. There was a Exin Castillo exhibition... Great memories!!

Great Experience… could be much better with guided tours or at least an audio guide. Photos of Oreo walking along the Sil river across from the castle.

The ticket booth woman was very helpful, follow the yellow arrows like on the El Camino but.. I still wandered astray. The castle is in excellent condition with extraordinary views of the City. Well worth the cost of admission which was free today. Spend more than an hour here.

From the gates, it looks like a fairy tale castle, inside it is fairly mundane but I suppose worth it for the views. It has been extensively renovated but I don't think it gives much of an idea of what it was like originally

Ponferrada Castle - The templar heart of Castile Visiting the Castillo de los Templarios in Ponferrada is like entering a historical novel. Located along the famous Camino de Santiago, this imposing templar castle dominates the city with its crenellated towers, moats and mighty walls. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it was expanded in the following centuries, becoming one of the largest fortresses in northwestern Spain. The structure is majestic: over 8,000 m² of surface, with an irregular plan and a scenographic entrance protected by a drawbridge and two twin towers A. The twelve original towers reproduced the constellations, a detail that adds charm and mystery B. Today the castle houses the Templar Library and the Historical Research Center, with over 1,400 volumes, including facsimiles of works by Leonardo da Vinci. It is a place that not only tells the story, but keeps it carefully. The castle is loved by visitors for its beauty, panoramic view of the city and unique atmosphere C. It is open to the public and easily accessible on Avenida del Castillo, in the heart of Ponferrada A. The Castle of Ponferrada is much more than a tourist stop: it is a journey through time, a tribute to the Templars and a cultural reference point for the entire region. If you are looking for history, mystery and architectural beauty, this is the right place.

The Light Factory, Energy Museum is part of a collection of outstanding museums in the area. The museum is located in an old power plant and offers visitors the chance to explore three pavilions and a cafeteria. The museum showcases the history of power generation and is housed in a well-preserved old power station. Even for those not particularly interested in this topic, it's still an interesting place to visit due to its unique setting and historical significance.
Incredibly well presented museum in Spanish and English. Fascinating industrial history. Highly recommended.

You also hear the different sounds that would be heard if the factory were still active. It's not a boring museum at all; it's very entertaining and highly recommended for children. Over the years, I have continued to come on pilgrimage to the shrine. Every year I come from Madrid, where I live now, and I continue to come. My husband and my children continue to make the pilgrimage and the obligatory visit, just like me. This year I was GREATLY disappointed, and I feel entitled to express it here. I have donated twice to the shrine's renovations, and when I arrived, what a disappointment! The façade was all very well, BUT, Father, HE REMOVED IT!! The two small altarpieces that have always been on the left side of the church, are beyond words, something so mythical, so Asturian, and also the name of Our Lady of Holly. My ANGER, my pain, and my sorrow for what you have done. I feel that the donations of many parishioners will hurt us for what you have done. You have left the Sanctuary bare. (Translated by Google) The summary of my review is that you have to visit it. For me, it was a very good experience, and I highly recommend it. And now, in detail. First and foremost, the price is very affordable, considering the two-hour guided tour. In our case, it was Mari Carmen, who describes it with great care and attention to detail, and when someone puts love into what they do, it shines through, and the time flies. In my case, it was also my first guided tour of a mine, and I can say I've seen many things, but not of this type, and I think it's something not to be missed. It may seem trivial, but if this isn't passed on to other generations, they'll think the coal was brought by the Three Wise Men and that gold seekers went to the mine, as the Yankees told us in the movies. You need a reservation because they have two showings, at 11:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., but you can find all the information on the website, as well as the phone number to book, and even an audio guide if you want to get a preview. In my case, I went with a stroller; there were no accessibility issues at any point during the visit, and up until the final part, where the recreation of the mine shaft was located, you could bring a stroller. Of course, you don't go down into the real shaft. I think it's obvious that this can't be replicated on a cultural tour, but just in case anyone gets false expectations. In my case, I also went with a 7-year-old daughter, who might find some parts of the story too long, but you can opt for the children's audio guide with headphones. I hope it continues. Congratulations on the initiative and the renovation of the site, and thank you for sharing your knowledge!

Monasterio Santa María de Carracedo, founded in 990 by Bermudo II of Leon, is a stunning historical site with a medieval tower incorporated into its facade. Although currently under construction, the monastery's beauty and history are still evident. The well-kept pear orchards surrounding the area add to its charm. Accessible without deviating much from the highway, this old monastery has undergone various renovations and is now in a state of consolidated ruins.
It is a beautiful monastery, huge with 3 patios.very well maintened. You can do the visit with a handphone giving you informations about every room of tge monastery. There is an enteance fee but not expensive.

We walked up here from the visitors centre. Easily doable but quite steep in places. The views are great but don't forget to visit the galleries. It's €3 but great to walk in the tight caves and then get a view at the end.

Beautiful view of the goldmine! You have to walk some distance from the parking area up to the view point where you will be greeted with this spactacular view! There is also one part where you can go inside one of the caves to a viewpoint but it is only open certain hours so check beforehand!

What I like and didn’t like: I liked the fact that it’s situated more than 1000m above sea level and the steamy mood and vide you get is pretty. There is now a car park controlled by a gentleman and it’s not for free. I am unsure how much my father in law paid that day but should be somewhere no more than €5, he also knows almost every bit of the Leon county, I like nature and discovering places. It’s a breakaway or getaway break if you want a peaceful area just to sink in. I am unsure if it’s because we went around mid May or it was because the weather wasn’t hotter than what you would think, with it being Spain. What I didn’t like is the security measures are not in place. I would like to go there with my kids and feel freely they would be okay if I don’t hold their hand. The cars have to squeeze up to make room for each other, so if you are someone not confident to drive it’s best to leave the wheel to someone who can. By doing this you avoid involving other’s life if something has to go wrong. Overall I would highly recommend to visit this area full of history and information

One of the best views in the medullas. There is also access to a tunnel into one of the medulla hills, definitely worth the 4 euros! Several information panels explain the techniques of the Roman gold harvest and there is a ca. 10km round track to explore the valley and also hill side of the medullas. The tracks are well visualised. Be aware that the hill track is partly pretty steep.

Epic views of Las Médulas and right next to Las Galerías which you can enter for €3 and be transported back in time to the days of the Roman Empire. Well worth a visit.

Fantastic place to visit. Does require a bit of walking. Would definitely recommend

Beautiful viewpoint with paid access to one of the caves. Information panels in English which is quite unique for Spanish tourist information.

Amazing. We got up early and arrived at the car park around 7:30am. The walk from the car park is about 1 km. There is a barrier so you cannot get any closer. The walk starts off very inclined and becomes more steady for a bit. Then the last bit is again very inclined. Pure guess but would say you are rising up 300m elevation overall. If you think of a treadmill in the gym it's all more than level 10 incline. Please don't let that put you off. Just take it slow if you find it hard. When you get to the large viewing platforms it's an awesome sight. We had the place to ourselves for an hour. We watched the sun rise begin to fall across the tops of the little peaks. It looks like something you might expect to see in Australia with the golden earth and vibrant green carpet of trees. Plus we got to watch the birds nesting near by in the cliffs waking up and filling the sky as a bonus. Looked like swallows.

Las Médulas, located in the El Bierzo region of León, is a sprawling Roman gold mine spread across 3,000 hectares. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, this area features striking orange-hued hills formed by ancient Roman gold mining activities. The Romans employed the Ruina Montium method to extract gold using water force to collapse mountain areas. Visitors can explore caves and tunnels on guided tours and learn about the site's history at the archaeological museum.
An unique place made by people 2000-2200 years ago. We spent 3h but it is easily can be spent half of a day

Las Medulas is so beautiful. Even though the fires swept through in August there is still so much beauty to be seen. The hiking trails are open. Come support this community and take a visit!

Incredible experience! You can discover the gold mines along different trekking. Even you can visit a gold mine inside, by paying a ticket and following some instructions. Get ready to walk, get water with you and enjoy the amazing views. You can also try the traditional food in any of the restaurants in the village.

One of “must see”. It is area of old Roman gold mine. They run two aqueducts to flush down entire mount. I think it was great environmental disaster of that times. Fortunately Nature reclaimed this place and rearranged it in great style. I can assure you that walking around you will be astonished. This place is so picturesque that I have had big problems which photos should I publish. My opinion you can skip one thing. “Lago”, means lake. I could hardly find something interesting about it. Don’t forget to take a lot of water with you!

Once the largest and most productive gold mine in the Roman Empire, las médulas is a magical place, and well worth visiting. See the excavations and enter inside the tunnels used to excavate the gold. Parking is free and there's no charge to enter. The site is suitable for all fitness levels, but is not very wheelchair friendly.

What a place , well worth a visit if in Northern Spain . The 10.6km walk is a great route with some interesting scenery. This can be found on the notice board at the car park or on AllTrails ect .

Amazing experience. I recommend to do the full outside hike, as you will see places hidden for the rest, doing the experience even more special

If I would have been walking around I would be greatly disappointed. Only because Las Medulas are a bit off hand and if one come to this location it must be this. Luckily I decided to do route on the bike. I could see and discover far more. There is a bike route that goes around Las Medulas with stopovers, perfect views and picnic places. And I wouldn't want to walk this distance. 5 stars for the history. Sad one but interesting.

Centro de Recepción de la Reserva Natural Integral de Muniellos

Nature & Wildlife Areas
The Centro de Recepción de la Reserva Natural Integral de Muniellos is eagerly anticipated by visitors who are eager to return. Despite the challenging weather on that particular day, the shortest route was taken and proved to be worthwhile. A special acknowledgment goes to Reyes, who warmly welcomed and provided excellent explanations. It is gratifying to encounter individuals like Reyes who generously share their knowledge. This national reserve offers friendly guides who explain the route thoroughly, making it accessible for experienced mountain enthusiasts with no complications.
Very nice people that explain to you what to find in the route. The route presents no complications for people with experience in the mountain.

Friendly reception staff eager to explain the routes. The 20km route is quite difficult and numerous places have a nasty drop if you are unlucky enough to slip! If not good on your feet and/or without good boots and hiking sticks best not attempt it.

(Translated by Google) Super punctual arrival at 8:45 a.m. on 11/04/2024, as required by the authorization, issued by the Ministry of the Principality of Asturias. The girl who receives us, Pilar, is very friendly, explains everything to you in the smallest detail, although she seems a little confused, because you hand her the documentation, she asks for your identity card and after a short while she asks you again for your name. The road to get there is quite narrow and there is mobile coverage, as there are frequency inhibitors made so that you cannot talk on the phone in a protected space, I recommend downloading Google Maps offline, to be able to get to the facilities. When you return from the route you take you have to go and let them know that you have arrived because in autumn it closes at 5:15 p.m. On the way back after going to give the news that we had arrived, we asked him about the depth of one of the lagoons, he said he didn't know and apparently asked a colleague, who was also a guard of the reserve [the truth He didn't like it, because the answer was quite derogatory and he was asked about some recreational areas and the information, he gave it but very reluctantly and with a very serious face to be facing the public, in a very nice place, although The environment is reserved, specifically the walkway and some bridges are quite neglected, in particular one is missing the mesh and it slips really badly, it needs a little maintenance. In much of the route, at least the area where the river. The reserve is spectacular with colors in autumn, without quite getting in tune, due to the inclement weather, which instead of being cold and raining, the temperature is 23 degrees.

(Translated by Google) In this Natural Park, there are two paths, two paths to reach the lagoon, which meet at a crossroads at 1,260 m high. The upper one has a length of just over 9 km, the river one 7 km. You have to overcome a difference in altitude of about 600 m. From this crossroads, there is "only" one kilometer left and about 80 meters of elevation gain to reach the lagoon. The path up is spectacular, but requires being in good physical shape. There is a section that must be passed with a fixed rope, and several large fallen oaks that must be surrounded, which adds fatigue and time to the route. At the Reception Center, they advised us and provided us with a radio station to stay connected in case of incidents.
