Wiang Kosai National Park, located in the districts of Wang Chin and Phrae, is a serene natural escape from city life. The park is home to various wildlife such as muntjac and flying squirrels. Visitors can enjoy woodland hikes leading to cascades and thermal springs. One of the park's highlights is the Maekoeng waterfall, surrounded by lush greenery. The management office on Route 1123 offers friendly assistance and camping options nearby.
Beautiful and quiet. It's a little bit of problematic with small children. If you get here go to the top waterfall .

A Hidden Natural Wonderland in Northern Thailand If you’re craving a true escape into untouched nature, Wiang Kosai National Park is an absolute dream. Located between Lampang and Phrae provinces, this national park is still relatively unknown to most tourists—which makes it even more magical. I visited recently, and it completely exceeded my expectations in every way. 🌲 Dense Forests, Waterfalls & Wildlife From the moment I arrived, I was enveloped by lush green forests, the scent of damp earth, and the sound of birds echoing through the trees. The park is covered with rich teak and mixed deciduous forest, giving it a wild, untouched feel. It’s the kind of place where you immediately feel connected to the natural world. One of the highlights of my visit was the stunning Mae Koeng Luang and Mae Koeng Noi Waterfalls—multi-tiered falls with crystal-clear water cascading over smooth stones. There are well-marked trails that take you to each tier, and though the hike can get steep in places, it’s absolutely worth it. The views are breathtaking, and the sound of water rushing through the jungle is incredibly soothing. 🐒 A Place to Breathe, Reflect, and Explore I was lucky enough to spot monkeys, butterflies, and a variety of birds during my walk. The biodiversity here is impressive, and because it’s not overly commercialized, you can really enjoy the serenity without crowds or noise. There are also cool viewpoints scattered throughout the park—some offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, others hidden deeper within the trees where you can sit and take it all in. 🏕️ Camping & Facilities If you’re into camping, Wiang Kosai has designated camping areas with basic amenities. You can bring your own tent or rent one on-site. I didn’t camp this time, but I’d love to return and spend a night under the stars—it’s the perfect place for it. There’s also a visitor center near the entrance where the rangers are friendly and can help with maps or tips on where to go based on the season. 🚗 Getting There The park is best reached by car or motorbike. It’s about an hour from Phrae or Lampang, and the drive itself is scenic and enjoyable, especially as you get closer to the park boundaries and the mountains rise around you.

Wiang Kosai National Park protects approximately 410 km² of mountainous tropical forest in the Phi Pan Nam Range, spanning Phrae and Lampang provinces. Key attractions include the multi-tiered Mae Koeng Waterfalls (Luang and Noi), the Mae Chok Hot Spring, and scenic mountaintop viewpoints. The park supports rich forest ecosystems, home to muntjac, squirrels, diverse birdlife, and lush flora. Visitors can enjoy camping, guided woodland hikes, and swimming in natural pools. Facilities include a visitor centre, restrooms, simple food stalls, and camping grounds. Open daily from 08:00 to 16:30. Entry fee is approximately THB 200. Access is via Highway 101 → 11 to Wang Chin, followed by local roads. Ideal for peaceful nature escapes, forest bathing, and camping under cool northern skies.

Kad Kong Ta Street Market, nestled along Talad Kao Road by the Wang River, transforms into a bustling hub every weekend from 5 PM to 10 PM. This vibrant market is steeped in history, reflecting over a century of trade with its charming blend of Chinese, Burmese, Western, and Lanna architectural styles. As the sun sets, the street comes alive with an array of stalls offering delicious traditional foods and unique handicrafts.
Our favourite street market in Thailand! Amazing inexpensive bites to eat, incredible live music, and really unique and beautiful crafts and other goods to browse and purchase! Definitely plan your visit to Lampang so you’re here for it (Saturday or Sunday evening).
Ezra C — Google review
Great weekend market! Not too busy, but many stalls to buy from. Beautiful old buildings surround the market.
Aaron B — Google review
Must visit on Sunday evenings around 6-8. We went at 5:15 and many vendors were still setting up so I would wait until 6. Delicious orange drinks, foods, and local items for sell. Locals market and not tourist market which is nice!

Very nice walking street. More local and authentic than in Chiang Mai. Not so touristy. Really worth a visit. Lots of good food too!
Peter M — Google review
It’s suggested to visit here at around 6pm. There are various things for selling here including souvenirs or daily appliances. A must visit night market.
Rhonda T — Google review
I enjoyed just mingling with the locals and learning about the things they enjoy eating and buying as I spend the evening at this night market which is only held on Saturday and Sunday night. I also enjoyed the music being played by various school children who were there to raise funds for their school. Live music by various buskers add to the lively atmosphere.

Nothing too special about the food, but the surrounding wood buildings are amazing and, unlike other markets, almost no one speaks English.

Dhanabadee Ceramic Museum

Guided tours of the creation process in a factory producing traditional, hand-painted rice bowls.
We thoroughly enjoyed our guided tour of the Ceramic Museum. It was fascinating to learn about the history and to see the old dragon kiln. We bus have a new appreciation of the bowls our noodles come in. Well worth the 100b entry fee which also gave us a discount at the shop and the cafe.
Kim M — Google review
This is a good place to visit but our tour felt rather rushed. Would be nice to be taken round with enough time to read a bit more of the information or be able to go at your own pace. Tour guide was good though and informative for the main information that you require. The shop was reasonably priced.
Robert S — Google review
Dhanabadee Ceramic Museum is a perfect place to get a first hand experience on how to make a chicken bowl. The process was founded way back from China and brought to Thailand. The designs and details were meticulously hand-painted. Because of their unique techniques, it made the city as one of the exporters of chicken bowls and ceramic creations in the country and overseas. Plus, you can see a bowl made out of real gold. Be sure to check it out. As a tourist, it is definitely an additional to your list when visiting Chiang Mai! My boyfriend and I enjoyed a lot!
Isabella R — Google review
I recently visited this museum after seeing all the glowing 5-star reviews online, but what a disappointment! It quickly became clear that many of these positive reviews are fake. The exhibits were poorly maintained, there was little educational value, and the staff seemed uninterested in helping visitors. It felt like the museum was more concerned with creating a false image online than actually delivering a quality experience. I wouldn’t recommend wasting your time or money here. It’s sad that they resort to using fake accounts to boost their ratings instead of improving the experience for guests
Ferdico B — Google review
What a great place to visit! I realy enjoyed rhe tour of the factory. They offer tours in english. You walk in the factory and see how everthing is made.
Michal A — Google review
Not really sure what the negative reviews are on about, this was the highlight of our visit to Lampang and was absolutely worth the money (100 baht entrance fee). There are guided tours every hour and our guide, Fay, was amazing, speaking in both Thai and English to the group. She and the other staff were also very friendly and helpful with answering questions we had about our time in Lampang. You get to learn the whole history and process of the chicken bowl, which is still made by hand at the museum/factory today. If you’re interested in history, arts, culture, you shouldn’t miss it!

Katie is very informative and fun to communicate with Thai and English. She would take time to show detail for more info.

Such a great place to learn about the history of pottery in the area! Our guide Noon was so so so nice (and she actually let me go through the tour a second time because I wanted to take more pictures! Thank you Noon!) and it was a great place to learn about a piece of pottery that may seem everywhere but actually has such a unique history! Entry was 100 BAHT per person too!

Baan Sao Nak is a historic teak-wood Lanna-style house built in 1895, featuring traditional furnishings and architecture. Restored multiple times, this remarkable structure stands on 116 wooden posts and once served as a resting place for important visitors to Lampang. The house reflects the influence of Burmese and Lanna architecture, showcasing the wealth of Lampang's teak barons.
A historical house to understand history of Lampang. Great place for chill out for 1-2 hour. The architecture of the building is unique and reflect the traditional of Thailand architecture.

Nice teak house museum and garden to visit to feel of vintage Thai-styled house.
Pamorn G — Google review
Baan Sao Nak is great! It's an old teak wood house that's currently buckling a little under the weight of the wood. It was a rich family's house but now they turned it into a museum, which I think is really cool. It's only 50 baht, and it's the same price for Thai people and foreigners. The lady that gave my tour was friendly and helpful. And the tour guide was very knowledgeable. The price of the tour includes a small traditional beverage and some rice crackers. It's great value.

Traditional Thai building , comfortable atmosphere , ticket include a cup of tea and rice dessert. When I visit here , it will hold a wedding ceremony, it's amazing to watch them how to prepare wedding.

Very good place that you could learn how the Lampang citizen lived in the past. You could found several antiquities. Together with warm welcome from staff with Thai crispy rice cake and herbal drinking. Very good taste!!! I ever visited this place twice!

Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao Suchadaram is an ancient temple complex in Lampang known for its diverse architectural elements, including a gold-plated spire and statues. The 18th-century temple once housed the famous Emerald Buddha before it was moved to Bangkok's Wat Phra Kaew. The golden stupa and an ordination hall with mural paintings showcase Chiang Saen architecture style. Visitors can also explore a classic reclining Buddha and a museum displaying Lanna artifacts.
A Place of Peace and History This temple offers a serene and holy atmosphere that’s perfect for quiet reflection. The sacred pagoda is stunning, with intricate designs that showcase its spiritual significance. It’s a beautiful blend of tranquility, beauty, and history—highly recommended for anyone seeking peace and cultural inspiration.

An amazing experience, spiritually and artistically. It houses one of Thailand’s Emerald Buddhas and has a large reclining Buddha that’s well known. The Buddha in the newer main hall is quite large and impressive in size and design. In the mornings the pagoda shimmers of the sunlight, creating a visual sense of peace. This temple is one of Lampang’s treasures for sure.

Interesting and beautiful temple to visit . You can see also 20 Beautiful Pagoda Lanna Burmese stile.
Fabio C — Google review
Magnificently built located a few kilometres away from downtown and housed a 15th century solid gold image of Buddha inside the praying hall. A large golden chedi stands tall inside the compound. From the compilation of building structures and image existence this place is definitely an antiquated oldie. It's grandeur gives a feeling of calmness and inner peace. Glad to have a chance to stumble upon this piece of heritage.

Chae Son National Park

Nestled in a vast and picturesque landscape, Chae Son National Park is a haven of natural beauty. The park boasts mountains, forests, and stunning waterfalls, as well as year-round hot springs that are a major attraction. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rich forestland teeming with streams and wildlife. A highlight is the Chae Son Hot Wells, where natural hot water pools allow for unique experiences like boiling eggs or indulging in mineral baths.
Good hotspring with cold and hot water. You can buy raw eggs and boiled it as well. You can also take a bath privately, but for me the mineral foot bath is the best. Waterfall itself not far from here not recommend to swim at the waterfall since the hotspring will be better.
Grady L — Google review
I really enjoyed my visit, ended up spending most of my day here. There are 2 attraction in the main area: the Chae Son Hot Springs & the Chae Son Waterfall. The price is 200 TBH for foreigners, 100 TBH for Thais. The Hot Springs are extremely popular with domestic tourists. The main activities are boiling eggs, soaking the feet in the hot springs, and pickniking. The site is beautiful. Food and drink are available. The ticket includes access to a foot soaking area, small outdoor hot pools, and a stream where you can take a dip. The private bath areas are beautiful and cost only 50 TBH. Towels are available for rent. It's okay if you don't have a swimsuit, the rooms are fully private. There's also a massage pavilion, the price of a massage is only 200-300 TBH. You need to wait until a masseuse becomes available and they'll come get you, there's no front desk. For hikers, this is really an onsen first and national park second. There's only a very short path to the waterfall. The waterfall itself is unremarkable and swimming under it is prohibited. To get there, follow the stream up from the hot springs. The trail isn't marked so I ended up walking on the road. The trail is blocked beyond the 6th level of the waterfall. There was a signpost claiming that there's a 5km trail to the Mae Mon & Mae Khun Waterfalls. I couldn't find any info on this trail. There's also allegedly a "Mae Piak Nature Trail" somewhere in the park, but I couldn't locate this either. It's possible that the blocked off trail leads to these and you need to hire a guide to hike there. The park also allegedly has caves, couldn't get any info on them either. I gave it one star less because of the lack of hiking trails.
Antonija M — Google review
What an elegant park to visit. I almost thought I was back in Japan. It was that manicured especially in the hot springs area. The waterfall is impressive too with a small wall to the base leading up to the waterfall proper. Well worth a visit and can be easily combined with a visit the the sky temple, not 30 minutes up the road.
Maarten D — Google review
🌿 I visited the beautiful Chae Son National Park for 2 days and stayed one night at the campsite. If you’re driving from Chiang Mai, I highly recommend taking Route 1252. I mistakenly took the route through Mae Kampong village, which was very steep and challenging — not suitable for small cars like a Mazda 2 😄 🎟️ Entrance fee is 200 THB for foreigners, regardless of having a Thai work permit or pink card. Each national park in Thailand has its own policy, so always check ahead. The park is great for kids, with hot springs and a waterfall to explore. As other reviews mentioned: the bathrooms are clean and well-maintained. 💦 I definitely recommend taking an onsen bath at the hot springs — mine was 40°C and incredibly relaxing. They allow you to soak for 15 minutes, which was perfect. ☔ The only downside during our stay was the heavy rain, but despite that, we still had a lot of fun here. Highly recommended!
Koen G — Google review
Great place to relax! Big and scenic area with multiple hot springs. You can boil eggs, have a picnic, massage and soak in one of private onsen cabins. Also there are bungalows for overnight rent. Foreigner entrance fee is 200 THB. Visit date: 26 Oct 2025
Alexey S — Google review
This is a chance to experience a real hot spring. You can see a lot of locals and the view is beautiful. It is worth a visit.
Jung-Woo C — Google review
Hot spring was fantastic, boiled some eggs while there, and enjoyed a great classic Thai massage.
Juul L — Google review
Great experience to feel the warmth coming from the spring and be able to use it for footbathing. You can rent a towel for 20 BTH. People buy eggs at the 3 shops higher up inside the park itsself and slowboil them in the hot water. You can also find a waterfall there with a trail besides it that goes far up. Very affordable entry, 200 BTH per adult (think it was 50 BTH for resident and 20 BTH for parking or the other way around). Only the road to there from Chiang-Mai was very long through the forest (2h almost).

Wat Phra That Suthon Mongkhon Khiri is a stunning temple in Phrae Province, Thailand, showcasing exquisite Lanna art and Thai-European architecture. The temple features a large reclining Buddha and a blend of Lanna and Burmese architectural styles, adorned with captivating statues and elements. Despite occasional closures, it's worth visiting for its serene atmosphere and traditional beauty.
Have had this temple in the corner of my eye on a few passes, but this time it was a U-turn and a visit. There are big conditions here, so it took some time, but I didn't see any other people during my visit. This is a magnificent temple, densely packed with impressions, over quite a large area. If you are passing by, or nearby, a visit is recommended. There is a huge parking space after the entrance to the temple.

Originally built in 1892 by Chao Luang Piriyachai Thepphawong, the last ruler of Phrae, the house served as his residence. It felt like taking a step back in time as I went through the floors and the rooms and I really took my time doing so. I loved the fact that they also had these little document stands and picture boards to elaborate more on whatever piece of artifact you were seeing or room you were in. Absolutely recommend.

The residence of the Phrae royalty in the past. Learn about his and his family way of life here. Free to enter. There is a guide who can speak English to show you around the place. Came to visit during midday and chanced upon the free guided tour (in Thai) at 2pm. Took one and a half hour traveling on the tram to numerous temples. Mainly locals. Tour ended back at Kum Chao Luang, but you can get off at any point. We are free to tip them if we want at the end. Morning tour is at 10am. Luckily I had some knowledge of Thai so it's much enjoyable. Otherwise it may serve only as a transportation among the sites. the friendly guide is able to explain a little in English.

A historical destination that should not be overlooked! This, is the mansion of the last King of Phrae. Its furnished in a manner thats very vintage. There is also a guid, but only really speaks English, so maybe bring someone to translate for you? Lovely place, enjoyed soaking in the history 👌🏻

We made an unscheduled stop here and were we glad we did. No tourists were here when we visited. We took our time browsing the mansion/museum. There’s plenty of parking on the roadside (which is common in Phrae). No entrance fees, clean toilets and best of all…there’s a cold water dispenser. Staff were very friendly and considerate. Well-maintained sight. There are English labels for some of the items so I could understand the history of the mansion.

It was on fine day we went, the building is in good care. There are etiquette in English, but only short explanation. For someone who interest with building/history, perhaps you could read online articles before/after going to this place. Clean toilet available at the backyard garden.

Nestled in the heart of Phrae, Khum Chao Luang stands as a magnificent testament to the region's rich history and architectural evolution. Constructed in 1893 for Chao Luang Piriya Theppawong, the last ruler of Phrae, this grand residence showcases stunning period furnishings and intricately engraved wooden doors that reflect both local craftsmanship and Western influences from a time when Phrae thrived as a key player in the teak trade.
Khum Chao Luang is a historical building located in Phrae Province in northern Thailand. Originally built in 1892 by Chao Luang Piriyachai Thepphawong, the last ruler of Phrae, the house served as his residence. The building is an excellent example of a blend of traditional Lanna architecture and European styles, as reflected in its detailed wood carvings and architectural design. Khum Chao Luang is a two-story structure built of brick and cement, notable for its 72 windows and doors, as well as the intricate carvings on the gables and cornices. The building was later used as the residence of King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit during their visit to Phrae in 1958. A must visit place when coming to Phrae. Experience for yourself how the old ruler of Phrae lived, slept, dined and worked in his huge wooden house right in the city centre. Free entrance but donations can be made. Expect to spend 30-45 minutes here as a tourist to see it all and walk around slowly as the wooden floor is very slippery in some parts of the house

Wat Phra That Chom Chaeng is a less-visited but intriguing temple located just one kilometer away from Wat Phra That Cho Hae. The 29-meter golden chedi, built in 788, enshrines Lord Buddha's relic, including a hair donated by Buddha himself. Despite undergoing renovations, the temple offers a peaceful atmosphere and unique Lanna aesthetics. Visitors appreciate its serene ambiance and distinct decor, making it a worthwhile stop during a visit to Phrae.
Quiet and charming place. The style of temple is similar with temples in Myanmar. Worthy to come visit

When you are in the area, visiting the much larger Wat Pha That Cho Hae, I suggest you also come visit this temple. It is smaller but also ancient and set in a forest clearing. There is a very tall standing Buddha next to the stupa. There are other intetesting/different statues around the temple complex. Just outside the temple in the forest, there is a reclining Buddha.

This is a wonderful temple to visit. I am very confused though about many of the statues that are being tortured. wish that we knew why. All in all this has been our favorite temple but they may be because it was not crowded at all so we could walk around on my own.

"Sapae Yen" is a coffee shop located on a hilltop and is particularly revered by Buddhists who were born in the Year of the Tiger. The shop is home to several sacred relics of Lord Buddha, including his hair and left elbow. Visitors climb up the main stairway and enter through an upper gate before paying respects at "Phra Chao Tun Jai," one of the most sacred Buddha statues in Phrae.
For Buddhist, especially those who are born in the Year of the Tiger, it is a blessing to pay respect to the hair and left elbow relics of the Lord Buddha housed in the gold pagoda. After climbing the main stairway and entering the upper gate, there is one of the most sacred Buddha statute in Phrae known as Phra Chao Tun Jai where Buddhist will pay respects and make their wishes before going into the pagoda area. There are also many interesting Buddha statues surrounding the area around the pagoda and it is worthwhile to walk around and see. One can always find a quiet corner where he/she can meditated and feel the vibes.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Phayao Lake is a vast body of water located in northern Thailand that is home to over 50 species of fish and a unique variety of aquatic plants. It is the largest swamp in this region and serves as a symbol of Phayao's natural beauty. The water level is artificially controlled to prevent dryness outside of the wet season, while being surrounded by scenic mountains makes it an ideal spot for watching beautiful sunsets.
This is the center of attraction in phayao province...people come here after work on weekdays to just chill and enjoy the view of the lake. On saturdays and sundays they have morning market and evening market as well. Travel time from mochit bus terminal is 10hours via sombat tour bus or you may opt to visit chiangmai first then ride a bus from chisngmai to phayao three hours drive. Come and see phayao province for your personal experience.
Marie P — Google review
If you use google by putting in Phayao Lake you will end up on the super quiet side of the city. There is ‘nothing’ here. You will see local people fishing and you will see other tourists turning their cars here. The local person I spoke with told me that on a daily base he is sending tourists back because tourists wanted to go downtown. So enjoy Phayao Lake but better put in an address of a hotel/restaurant that is located downtown to really end up downtown.

Not too far from Chiang Mai and a great place to relax and take in the lovely lakeside view. It really is worth a stop on the way to Chiang Rai. There is also a central bus station in the small town that has good connections with most of northern Thailand as well as Bangkok

Wat Tilokaram

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Accessible by boat, this islet in a lake is a well-known pilgrimage site with a Buddha statue.
Very nice short trip to the lake temple. The boat is the fun here. I paid 100 bhat because I was with 2 more people. If you come alone it's 300 bhat. Don't forget to tip the driver 👌
Roy — Google review
An old temple in the middle of the lake which a boat ride is needed. Nothing much to do there but you can enjoy the view on the way. What a poor experience to see the local just caught fishes, turtles literally from the lake itself and put them in a bucket for anyone to pay some amount of money in order to let them free. What an easy way to do some business!

Great place to visit in Phayao Lake. Small shrine with wooden long boat ride to the island in the middle of the lake for only 50 baht. Phayao Lake at sunset is very beautiful. Recommended highly for a visit by eBike CNX and our group riders.

I love it there! A place that brings you peaceful and calm. the way to there was amazing view and it was just 50 baht person but if you are less than 6 people 300 baht to take over the boat round trip.
Butera — Google review
I came here during the rainy season. There are few people and the ticket for the boat ride is about 50 baht per person (if there are 5 visitors).
Chanin O — Google review
Wat Tilok Aram isn't your everyday temple—it's literally sitting pretty in the middle of Kwan Phayao Lake, like the chillest monk on a giant floating meditation mat 🛶🕉️. You have to take a short boat ride to reach it, giving you bonus points for feeling like Indiana Jones, but with fewer snakes and more serene vibes. Once you're there, the temple itself isn't huge, but that's kind of the charm. It's peaceful, tranquil, and offers views across the lake that are so calming they might just lower your blood pressure better than meditation itself. It's a unique spot for photos, contemplation, or just awkwardly standing around trying to absorb spiritual enlightenment. Overall, Wat Tilok Aram is a must-see if you're around Phayao—if only for the bragging rights of having visited a temple that requires actual paddling skills. Definitely bring your camera and some small change for the boat ride—enlightenment might be free, but the boat isn’t! 🚣✨

- 50 Baht each person for 6 people on boat - 100 Baht each person for 2 people on boat - Better give some extra tips to the driver, he got a cheap daily paid. Many rounds don’t help him to get more money. The drivers deserve tips! - Staff shouldn’t clean off flowers when visitors still there. It’s better to clean when visitors left, otherwise next time visitors would never want to buy flowers from the pier.

Mae Yom National Park, located in Phrae, is a hidden gem offering a serene escape into nature. The park boasts a lush teak forest and the tranquil Yom River running through its mountainous terrain. Spanning 350 square kilometers, it is home to diverse wildlife and offers various outdoor activities. Visitors can marvel at the Eng Mok Cliff's sea of fog at dawn and the unique rock formations of Kaeng Sue Ten in the middle of the river.
Small national park in Phrae with highlight attractions at Eng Mok Cliff with sea of fog early in the morning and Kaeng Sue Ten(แก่งเสือเต้น) with rocks formation in the middle of Mae Yom River running through it. Sea of fog can be found around winter approximately around November to January. Taking scenic route toward Lom Dong(หล่มด้ง) you should reach the scenic point just before the end of the road. The road is really winding but not too steep so it's a pretty easy ride. Tent camp and accommodation are around Kaeng Sue Ten area with small canteen available. I would recommend to come around November to December as the water is clearer, the air is cooler, and the trees are still green.
Wasan K — Google review
Covering nearly 455 km² across northern Thailand, Mae Yom National Park features the winding Yom River cutting through lush mountainous terrain of mixed evergreen and teak forest. Highlights include Dong Sak Ngam, home to extensive stands of towering teak; Kaeng Suea Ten, a natural river riffle perfect for camping and rafting (seasonal); and the enigmatic Lom Dong basin, which offers year-round water and scenic viewpoints. Wildlife sightings include elephants, serow, deer, wild boar, and diverse birdlife. The park offers basic amenities including a visitor center, campgrounds, and floating houses on the river. Open daily 09:00–17:00, with entrance fees ranging from THB 20 to 100 depending on nationality. Ideal visit season runs November through May, with foggy mornings and pleasant hiking conditions.

At least it’s only 100 baht per person but there’s not much to do here . Pretty view in terms of a nice river /rapids but that’s all there is . You pay to have river access but there is no hike or anything . We took the road through the park which eventually dead ended (it used to be another entrance to the park). There is rafting that happens here in certain seasons too but probably expensive ! Pretty area but not worth a detour

Tham Pha Nang Khoi, Phrae: Cave of Colored Lights

Mentioned on

Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
Tham Pha Nang Khoi in Phrae is a surprising gem, with its 1.6 km length leading visitors through stunning stalactites and stalagmites that are steeped in local folklore. The cave is illuminated with colorful lights and features stops where you can learn about the legends associated with it. Legend has it that the cave was once home to a waiting princess, giving it its name.
I visited this cave 4 years ago but then it was closed down but now it was open to visitors. Parking on site is fine, and there is free access to the cave, and you organize yourself without guides. There is a short distance to walk, uphill with stone steps leading up to the entrance to the cave. For those who have slightly claustrophobic tendencies, there is an opening at both ends of the cave, so should something happen, there is an opportunity to get out. It was only me in the cave during my visit, and of course it was dark for the light to do its job. Narrow wooden bridges have been made to get through, where necessary, and it was a nice experience to get through the cave. As you can see from the pictures, I went out at the other end, before starting the return trip. In terms of photography, the darkness was a challenge for the camera, and a tripod would certainly have made the sharpness of the images somewhat better, but it was not available. The place is recommended for anyone who has the opportunity to visit, but the trip up and down from the entrance can be a challenge if you are not quite mobile.
John S — Google review
Interesting to visit this place. Love the limestone with water flowing. Guess it the iconic stuff to see inside the cave. The steps up to thebcabe was not nicely patched hence its might be challenging for some. Plenty of parking. Short climb to the cave. Plenty of parking area.
Hao T — Google review
The cave is absolutely beautiful! The entrance is free. Visitors should be aware of the path to the cave and in the cave. The humidity during monsoon season is very high and the stairs become very slippery. The path inside is slippery as well. The lights in the cave provide enough light to see around and to take pictures, and videos. There are not too many visitors during rain season.
Aleksandr B — Google review
Great free place to visit. The caves are amazing inside if a little worry some as they are so wide haha Nicely lit up and it was very quiet. It's completely unaccessible for anyone with mobility issues unfortunately due to the height of the caves and the very rough steps. Outside the caves they have labelled all the trees if you are interested in that. Not too bad a view from the top also.

We had a lovely time at this cave. The grounds are well maintained. Staff was friendly and helpful. The cave is currently dry and very easy to explore. There was a woman, working in the little store in the parking lot, who turned on the lights for us. We felt very lucky to be the only ones in the cave at the time. We also enjoyed feeding the animals there (Goats, deer, peacocks, ducks and chickens).

Area of forested mountains known for Than Sawan waterfall, plus a nature trail & resident peacocks.
Spanning nearly 860 km² across Phayao Province, Doi Phu Nang National Park protects diverse ecosystems from highland forests to fertile river valleys. The park’s highlight includes the Than Sawan Waterfall, Doi Phu Nang Peak (1,202 m), and Thailand’s largest breeding ground for green peafowl (January–March). Visitors can explore forested trails, enjoy riverside waterfalls, and observe unique wildlife. Facilities include a ranger-run visitor centre, restrooms, campgrounds, and basic lodging—though food and gear should be brought along. Open daily 08:30–16:30, with modest entrance fees. I really like this place. The waterfalls is very nice and a lot of water which you could jump and swim. The campground is nice.
Phakapan — Google review
Important routing advice: If you are coming from Phayao (just over an hour's drive), gps will guide you right in to the park, but if you come from Lampang, gps will have you exit highway 1 near Mae Wa, and this route eventually ends up on a dirt road with 40 km still to go. Continue north on highway 1 to highway 120 and come in that way. That said, this was a nice park. Entry was 100 thb plus 30 for a car. Main attraction is the waterfall, which I will review separately. Camping here looks peaceful. There's a snack bar and a restaurant, although I had trouble getting someone's attention there and eventually gave up on getting a coffee. There's also a short nature trail, 1.3 km loop which took my less than 30 minutes to walk. Not that interesting of a walk, but good for exercise if you have the time. Trail starts above the first aid house and ends near the snack bar. And speaking of the first aid house, they seem to be safety conscious here. In addition to first aid, there was also a ranger stationed by the waterfall, who kept an eye on me any time I was near the water. Comforting to me. Toilets are in numerous locations, even down by the waterfall.

Probably the prettiest twin waterfalls I've visited. Enchanting and surreal. Must visit but do it off-peak. If you're lucky, a pet peacock will be there to greet you.

Actual entrance is a little further west down the road. Hands down the best park I've been to. Not crowded. Beautiful waterfalls. Easy hike. Look out for peacocks! Good cheap restaurant on site as well.

The Waterfall is awesome ! Quiet unfortunate you can't swim there. Was definetly worth the trip.

Be careful with big birds walking on park and camping ground. One of them are aggressive and dangerous. It attack my tent and after that my legs, it was scary and painful :(

This bustling camping site offers basic amenities but lacks electricity at the campground.
It is very nice campground. You can see the sunrise easily. The place is clean and the shower room is good also with the hot water. There is one lovely coffee shop where you can sit and enjoy the view.

If you're here for the view and nature, this is one of my most recommended place to sleep overnight. I stayed in a hut overnight with nice bed and thick blankets for two. Waking up to sunrise and a sea of misty fog layed acrossed the land. They also have a cafe that you can have toast and coffee to warm you up.

Great place for camping, very well covered facility, but be careful of leeches when stepping on wet surface. Overall really good place for relaxing and enjoy the scenery. Cell service is working.

Try not to go with motorbike 🏍️ the road was extremely slippery during rain, especially on the edge of the road. Me and my partner were had an accident but it wasn’t a bad one. Guys! I couldn’t see anything when I reached the viewpoints. It was drizzling all the time and a bit cold. I suggest you to not go up the pine tree viewpoint, crazy leech will suck your blood like hell. They are extremely difficult to get rid off from your feet. Anyway I am pretty sure this place will look a lot better during winter, the pink flowers still waiting to be seen next time. The staffs are really nice and helpful.
Yosita K — Google review
Peaceful National Park with nice camping areas and good bathrooms. Sadly, the forest has been denuded in many places and the lights from a couple of large towns are visible in the night. The tiny restaurant only cooks rice with omelette which is tasty. We had a pleasant night watching the stars move in the heavens.

National Park at 1400 mt. Elevation with campground and facilities. Nice coffee shops as well. A 400 mt. hike will take you on the mountain top and you will be rewarded with a great view.

A very busy camping site. Doesn’t have electricity at the campground. It’s not allowed to cook near the tents too. There is a separate place for that. Pillows provided by the camp are not that comfortable. You can see the sunrise in the morning.

Sao Din Na Noi

Mentioned on

Geologic Formations
Sao Din Na Noi, also known as Hom Chom, is a remarkable natural wonder located in Thailand's Nan Province. This area is famous for its unique rock formations that have been shaped by wind and rain over thousands of years. Geologists estimate that these formations are between 10,000 and 30,000 years old and believe that the area was once the bottom of the sea.
Sao Din Na Noi is a must visit when in Nan Province. It is a very interesting geological phenomena created over thousands of years. It is very close to the city of Na Noi with good signage. There is an older trail to follow but it has disappeared in some places but exploring the place is a lot of fun. Go and enjoy your hike!
Z W — Google review
Sao Din Na Noi is a small area with cliffs and green trees and it's over 10,000 years old. The structures are formed by wind and rain. Nice to walk around and perfect location for taking photos. When we were there in November, we were the only visitors
Marjon M — Google review
For travelers like me who do a tour of the superb Nan province. Forget about this place, you will not see more than what’s on the photos. They ask for 100 baths and more 20 baths for parking. And they don’t even provide a leaflet or a map of the site. It’s really not worth the detour.
Alexandre A — Google review
It's believed that Sao Din Na Noi was created as a result of the shifting of earth's crust during the late Tertiary Period. Geologists estimate these formations, once part of the oceans floor, to be roughly 20,000 years old. Discoveries of stone bangles and ancient axes have been made here...indicating that this area was, also, once inhabited by human beings during the Palaeolithic Age.

Nice place to visit in eary morning hour or the lare evening hour while the weather is not that hot. Great place to capture some mini grand canyon type landscapes. The entrance for a foreign is 100 baht. The same ticket that was purchased at Doi Samer Dao can be used here as well. There were washrooms here.
Randula H — Google review
I paid 150 baht; 20 baht for adult. 100 baht for foreigner, and 30 baht for car parking. The tickets include the entrance fee for Doi Samur Dao camping ground.

Lots of grand canyon type, some compare it to China's Kunming. Okay to visit if you are already in Nan. An hour and a half drive from Nan city.

In my point of view, it's natural sand mountain, just small one! Anyone who likes the plain style background can stop by for a visit. In addition, the restroom here contains shower room too. For those who didn't had a shower up at Doi Samer Dao may consider to do so at this place.

Nestled within the Sri Nan National Park, Doi Samer Dao is a popular camping site offering breathtaking views of the sunrise and night skies. Visitors can witness a stunning sea of mist that blankets the valley at dawn and explore the nature trail to Pha Hua Singh, also known as Lions Head Cliff, for panoramic vistas of the surrounding forests and river.
What an awesome campsite. We spent 3 nights here and did some really nice hiking. It's always good to arrive early so you can pick the best place to set up your tent. The only downside is quite old toilets and shower buildings.

If you're looking for a quiet getaway surrounded by nature, with incredible sunrise and sunset views and a sky full of stars at night, Doi Samer Dao is a must-visit! It’s located inside Si Nan National Park in Nan Province, and it’s easy to reach by car. A short walk from the parking area takes you to the scenic viewpoint on top of the ridge. This spot is perfect for camping. If you don’t have your own tent, you can rent one from the park (around 300–400 THB). There are bathrooms and charging stations available, but no food stalls—so bring your own or order in advance. The air is cool and comfortable at night, with no city lights to block the stars. A dream for stargazers! The best part? Early in the morning, you’ll witness a sea of mist floating over the hills with golden sunlight peeking through. Totally worth waking up early!
Meaw M — Google review
It is amazing experience here. Camping, stargazing and sunrise. Unfortunately, when we come (mid-nov) the moon was showing-off and cloudy at midnight. When sunrise the fog came. But overall was good. If you rent tent here, please check first for any insect.
Bobby E — Google review
My first camping in Thailand. The place was clean and spacious. Public toilets were clean and they have charging stations, that’s a surplus! Rent a tent for 2 pax at 390 THB if I’m not wrong, it’s cheap!!! Before enter the park, you gonna have to buy ticket and pay for car park. It’s cheap tho, please don’t mind the price. It’s freezing cold at night and it rain on the night I stayed. Luckily the tent was water proof so I can sleep tight. Haha
Wei L — Google review
Arrived on 14/12/23 , A place to watch the sunrise and sunset in the same place. The atmosphere is very good. There is a breeze blowing. The park staff provide good service. The bathrooms are clean. Recommended.

Another camping experience here, this place have special rules for car parks, you can unload your camping stuff near camping site, then you have to park your car at the parking area down hill. You can either rent a camp or bring your own, in the normal days, you will have to spend a bit of camping fee. There are restaurants delivery offered at the site, no need to worry about food. The view of stars at night and sunrise in the morning was stunning!
Cindy T — Google review
I can’t stop saying “Awesome” to this place, every spot my eyes see is so beautiful. The color of the grasses make me think of teletubbies 😂. It is truly relaxing and the view is stunning 🤩 After the rain, the clouds are just perfectly floating above this landscape. During rainy season this place is quite empty so I can enjoy the nature peacefully ☺️ This place is called “ Doi samer dao” because during winter at night you can see countless stars really close to you, as if this mountain as high as the same level as those stars ⭐️
Yosita K — Google review
We rented the tent for 2pax for 390thb. Didn't book anything. Came at 3pm they still have tent available. You can bring food to cook, there are so many items to rent for cooking. Come before sunset for the pretty view and wake up early at 5am to watch sunrise. So worth it! The toilet are clean too.

There is a rest area along the highway with facilities, a large lawn some use for camping and a viewing platform overlooking the Nan River Valley. Up the road you can turn into the park where there are some rooms available and a large camping area where you can set up your own tent or rent one. It is a very nice spot with great views. There are restaurants in the park as well.

Lovely, quiet and remote location and area for camping. Good options for camping, with some wildlife and birds to see. Use the tents or domes or take your own tent. Fabulous mornings especially, with low cloud cover and can be very cool, with great views over the valley. If you are thinking of going, just go - prepared to stay, as we visited and then decided to stay, so were charged twice for entry to the park.

Wat Phra That Khao Noi, a 15th-century temple in Nan, is renowned for its stunning sunset views and houses a tall golden walking Buddha statue. This ancient sanctuary, built during the reign of Chaopu Khaeng in 1487, holds relics including the Buddha's hair. Serene temple on hill. You may drive up to the temple or park your car and climb up the stairs. I suggest to take the stairs as you’ll experience different vibes and work out as well. Just a little bit upset as the Buddha statue was under maintenance when I visited the temple. You can enjoy the view of Nan city from here. Suggest to visit here around sunset time as you can take stunning photos. The Chedi is beautiful.

Always a great Wat to visit. This is especially so if you are a photographer. The golden Buddha is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset.. The Buddha with the vista of Nan in the background is stunning. Allow plenty of time before and after the sunset/sunrise as the sky color changes just keep on giving. Also look at all the other beautiful structures in the precincts of the Wat. Highly recommend a visit.

the temple is located at the top of a hill to the west of the city (about 7 minutes and 3.2km from Nan National Museum).  Very nice view of the valley and the city.  As the view is to the east, the best time is to come in the late afternoon.  Access by car with parking at the top but it is also possible to stop halfway up the hill and climb the stairs for the more athletic.  We arrived around 5:30 p.m. and the sun was already very low in the west with low light over the valley.

No luck on me. I’ve to this place many times and the view point is good. You can see Nan city and stunning Buddha statue together. This time it was raining like crazy. Wat Ming Mueang, a small but unique white temple in Thailand, has undergone significant remodeling in recent decades. The detailed architecture and interior decorations, including sculptures and wall murals, make it a sight to behold. The main temple houses a revered Buddha image and the golden city pillar is located at the front. While photography inside is restricted, the exterior offers plenty of beautiful buildings and sculptures to admire and capture through your lens.
I would consider this as white temple of Nan. What’s special about this temple is that you can buy flower and colourful clothe to tie on the holy pillar. The colour of clothe is depends on the day you were born. There was a description at the counter.

This is where the city pillar located, the temple is decorated in white, and the structure is hugely amazing, all the status and surrounding are painted in white. We visited in the late afternoon, the temple has car parking area for free, many people come by to worship the Buddha then walk down to the streets to visit the close by area. Nice 👍

Beautiful Temple, near the city-center of Nan. The Temple grounds are not large, however, it is the different buildings and the intricate detail found inside, and outside, that are particularly interesting, and quite beautiful. Though small, it is very beautiful and, when set against the deep blue sky of Nan in its temperate weather, it is a very enriching cultural experience.

We came here to visit with friends on our way to the Airport after spending some time up in the mountains with them - this temple is beautiful. The lady thought we are coming to pray so she started trying to give us envelopes for donations and all, but since we understood Thai, we just told her we are visiting only and then all was good. There's so many beautiful buildings and sculptures here to check out and its definitely worth a visit!

small but a unique WHITE TEMPLE, very few in Thailand. it went through serious remodelling in recent decades, all the architectures were incredibly detailed, from outside to inside were nicely decorated with sculptures and wall murals. the golden city pillar was also located at the front of the main temple. inside the temple, the Buddha image was the highlight, the entire setting was a piece of respected and a beautiful religious art.

Right in the town centre, with an unprepossessing entrance, it might be easy to walk straight past. Reminiscent of the White Temple in Chiang Rai, the ornate interior is outstanding. Overall, very compact site, but make sure you don't miss it.

History Museums
Nan National Museum, located in the former palace of Nan's last feudal lords, offers a glimpse into the rich heritage and art of this ancient kingdom. The museum houses a remarkable collection of Buddha sculptures, ceramics, textiles, weapons, musical instruments, and royal regalia that showcase Nan's diversity and glory.
A Must-Visit Gem in Nan: The National Museum Before you even enter the museum, you are greeted by a famously beautiful Plumeria Archway. This spot is an iconic photo opportunity and a beloved landmark that almost every visitor stops to capture—it's practically a part of Nan's history itself. My first visit left me in awe. The museum is a treasure trove of national heritage, housing invaluable artifacts. The most renowned of all is the sacred Black Ivory, a unique and treasured heirloom of the Nan province. To visit Nan without seeing this is to have not truly experienced the city! Inside, you will discover: · The Fascinating History of the Nan Rulers: A captivating narrative of the local lords and their legacy. · Incredibly Rare Artifacts: The museum safeguards precious objects, including historic cases that once held the Tripitaka (Buddhist scriptures), which are now extremely rare to find elsewhere. The entire site has been meticulously restored by the Fine Arts Department, preserving its historical integrity and beauty. The architecture of the building itself is stunning. Final Verdict: This museum is an absolute must-visit. It offers not just breathtaking aesthetics but also a profound and educational journey into the heart of Nan's rich history. It is truly worth your time and exploration.

A great place to dive into the history of Nan province, especially its rulers and their influence on the region. Set in a charming old house, the museum is filled with artifacts like Lanna-style textiles and other pieces that reflect the area’s cultural heritage. Personally, I found it to be a small but interesting stop. It’s housed in a two-storey building and gives a good overview of Nan’s rulers. The 20-baht entrance fee for Thais makes it very affordable, and while it’s not a huge museum, it’s worth visiting for a quick, informative look at Nan’s past.

Went here on Monday and the museum is closed. So I didn’t enter the museum but just walking around and take some photos at plumeria tree tunnel. This area is accessible and free to enter. Just that you have to study local weather if you wanna take photo with the flowers.

The paintings in Wat Phra Phimai in Nan Province are believed to date back to the late 19th century to early 20th century, during the Rattanakosin period of Thai history. These murals reflect traditional Lanna and Tai Lü artistic styles, which are prominent in the Nan region. Features of the Murals: 1. Stories Depicted: The murals primarily portray scenes from the Jataka tales (stories of the Buddha’s previous lives) and local interpretations of Buddhist cosmology. 2. Artistic Style: The artwork is characterized by the Lanna style, with rich, earthy tones and intricate details. This style blends religious symbolism with elements of daily life, showcasing the cultural and spiritual values of the period. 3. Preservation: While some parts of the paintings have deteriorated over time, efforts have been made to preserve them due to their historical and artistic characteristics.

Wat Phumin has Nan’s famous wall painting of whispering couple, hence, also known as the temple of whispering lovers. We were lucky to have two young girls explaining in their native language about the history of the temple. The unique architecture of the temple gives the feeling that the entire temple is riding the back of two giant dragons (nagas). Locals believe that if a couple would like to have a long lasting couple life, they got to come in front of this famous work of art and pay homage to the Buddha image.

Many shops around the temple offer visitors a variety of products ranging from clothing, souvenirs, lottery tickets, Silverware, food and drinks and many other things. Very beautiful, spacious, peaceful and serene. It is in immaculate condition for a 14th century temple. Must visit if nearby.

Located on a hill just across the Nan River from the city of Nan, Wat Phra That Chae Haeng is one of the most important and revered temples in Northern Thailand. This sacred site, believed to be over 600 years old, houses a relic of the Buddha and is considered the spiritual heart of Nan Province. The highlight of the temple is its stunning golden chedi (stupa), built in the classic Lanna style, which glows beautifully in the sunlight and can be seen from afar. The peaceful atmosphere, intricate architecture, and surrounding trees make it a perfect place for quiet reflection or cultural exploration. The temple complex also features a beautifully restored viharn (prayer hall), ancient Buddha images, and murals depicting local legends. Locals often come to make merit, and visitors are welcome to respectfully observe or participate.

A lot of Thai people come here to prey. As usual temple is good. You will find a big lying Buddha inside the temple. Some rabbit is the god here. Don't know about the history as most of the people can speak Thai only. Could have a bookstall in English for the myth of the temple.

Lovely Wat, around 600 years old. Undergoing restoration now. A calm and peaceful atmosphere, with locals visiting and a good market. There is a school across the road and the sounds of children playing in the yard is also lovely.

At the time of writing the temple is being worked on but there's much to do around the temple to see the garden and the other structure and architecture There are shops and places to sit and enjoy the tranquility

Nan Riverside Art Gallery, situated 20 kilometers north of Nan city, is a prominent venue for experiencing the burgeoning local art scene. Founded by Winai Prabripoo, a renowned Thai artist and Nan native, this expansive private gallery serves as a contemporary art center showcasing works by local artists. Nestled along the banks of the Nan River, it offers tranquil surroundings to appreciate diverse exhibitions.
Riverside art gallery a bit outside Nan town. Good variety of works--paintings, sculptures, installations--showcasing local and national artists. A peaceful riverside walk really adds to the charm. Lighting inside was a bit too dim. Plenty of parking available. Ticket is THB 20 per person. They also give you free postcard at the end. Overall, a surprisingly impressive visit and worth the stop.

Not really worth a 20mins drive from the city just to come here. The artwork doesnt have much details and not well kept. It was dusty and somewhat suffocating. I think if they have an actual curator to develop this place, there should be more potential. but for now, its a meh

Nice private gallery by the river. Good to visit.

Well worth a visit when in Nan. The main gallery is nice enough, but of particular note is the underground section displaying detailed reproductions of secular temple paintings featured in Nan's most historic temples. It's like having a tour guide before going to see the real thing.

One of the great joys of traveling around Thailand is discovering privately funded non-profit art galleries, and the Nan Riverside is an absolute gem. Both the gardens and the indoor spaces are delightful, and present you with a wonderful experience of the owner's selection of paintings, sculptures and landscape pieces. When traveling in this part of the country it is well worth a detour, and be sure to set aside an hour or two of your itinerary to soak up the experience of the art here. There is also a delightful gallery shop, and a cafe that looked great too, though we had already eaten lunch. Highly recommended, and we will definitely return when we are next in Nan Province

Amazing gallery outside of Nan about 20 minutes. Beautiful setting by Nan river with interesting and unique exhibits. Can enjoy coffee and a meal overlooking the river. Worth going to!

Ticket fee is 20 baht per person, there are various collection of arts in this place. Clean and organized. There is also a cafe where you can sit and relax beside the small river along the side the the gallery. Not sure if this place is really that crowded, or it's because I visited during the weekday, I like it when there is not too many people when you are viewing the arts.

A must-go when in Nan. I went there years ago and met the kind owner, Arjarn Winai Prabripu. The gallery kept a number of original art work and replicas of Ban’s historic art masterpieces. It’s worth the half-an-hour ride from downtown.
