Wat Phra That Suthon Mongkhon Khiri is a stunning temple in Phrae Province, Thailand, showcasing exquisite Lanna art and Thai-European architecture. The temple features a large reclining Buddha and a blend of Lanna and Burmese architectural styles, adorned with captivating statues and elements. Despite occasional closures, it's worth visiting for its serene atmosphere and traditional beauty.
Have had this temple in the corner of my eye on a few passes, but this time it was a U-turn and a visit. There are big conditions here, so it took some time, but I didn't see any other people during my visit. This is a magnificent temple, densely packed with impressions, over quite a large area. If you are passing by, or nearby, a visit is recommended. There is a huge parking space after the entrance to the temple.

The temple is very beautiful. But need to maintain in the front of the temple.

An absolute must see if you're nearby. Although it is not an old temple it has many great traditional features. You will need at least 45 mins to an hour to fully explore all this complex has to offer. Make sure you climb the steps and explore the shrines at the top of the hill, they are incredibly beautiful.

What a beautiful Regional gym a temple that the Royal Family, both Kings have visited. It's a shame the monks do not take care and keep it dusted and cleaned. In the last three or four years they have really Let It Go. But it's still very impressive to visit

I was impressed with the fine art construction of this temple & the intention of the ex-abbot whom intended to creat the fine art for the next generation. I recommended you to visit this temple & took time to absorb the soul of the creator. This temple close at 17.00 Lt.

The very elaborate local temple had 3 levels with various sala's. Some used others abandoned a whole ago. It has a big and rich collection of old artefacts well worth seeing. Plentiful richly decorated it has many stories. There is also a memorial for fallen soldiers.

5 stars absolutely given here to this temple. Many things here make it stand out from the rest like the big reclining Buddha and especially the huge golden tortoise behind the temple. There are so many beautiful things here to see and you can easily spend 20 minutes here enjoying everything this temple ground has to offer. Definitely a must visit temple in Phrae

Beautiful and shiny. It's a must see when visiting Phrae town. One of the best kept temple complexes I've seen in a while. You won't be disappointed. Right down the street from a bunch of bars and nightclubs too. Which is handy if you wanna crush a few beers after your search for enlightenment.
Just C — Google review
A newer temple within the old city of Phrae that is simply gorgeous. There is a more traditional looking Viharn but next to it is a magnificent multi-spire building. A reclining Buddha is outside in the open. A new giant turtle is currently being added to the complex. It within walking distance of several other sites in the old city.

Visit 26/3/2019 - Large turtle statue is a must see. Many other statues and shrines. Great artworks. Short walk from many other atractions.

Definately worth a visit if you are staying in Phrae. It is a beautiful collection of shrines and Lord Buddha statues. The architecture is quite different to other tempel sites. And beautifully white.

A must visit place when coming to Phrae. Experience for yourself how the old ruler of Phrae lived, slept, dined and worked in his huge wooden house right in the city centre. Free entrance but donations can be made. Expect to spend 30-45 minutes here as a tourist to see it all and walk around slowly as the wooden floor is very slippery in some parts of the house
Kasper H — Google review
First, it’s a free museum so no worries about reservations. And it’s filled with a lot of historical and unique pieces. It felt like taking a step back in time as I went through the floors and the rooms and I really took my time doing so. I loved the fact that they also had these little document stands and picture boards to elaborate more on whatever piece of artifact you were seeing or room you were in. Absolutely recommend.

The residence of the Phrae royalty in the past. Learn about his and his family way of life here. Free to enter. There is a guide who can speak English to show you around the place. Came to visit during midday and chanced upon the free guided tour (in Thai) at 2pm. Took one and a half hour traveling on the tram to numerous temples. Mainly locals. Tour ended back at Kum Chao Luang, but you can get off at any point. We are free to tip them if we want at the end. Morning tour is at 10am. Luckily I had some knowledge of Thai so it's much enjoyable. Otherwise it may serve only as a transportation among the sites. the friendly guide is able to explain a little in English.

A historical destination that should not be overlooked! This, is the mansion of the last King of Phrae. Its furnished in a manner thats very vintage. There is also a guid, but only really speaks English, so maybe bring someone to translate for you? Lovely place, enjoyed soaking in the history 👌🏻
Dasha K — Google review
We made an unscheduled stop here and were we glad we did. No tourists were here when we visited. We took our time browsing the mansion/museum. There’s plenty of parking on the roadside (which is common in Phrae). No entrance fees, clean toilets and best of all…there’s a cold water dispenser. Staff were very friendly and considerate. Well-maintained sight. There are English labels for some of the items so I could understand the history of the mansion.

It was on fine day we went, the building is in good care. There are etiquette in English, but only short explanation. For someone who interest with building/history, perhaps you could read online articles before/after going to this place. Clean toilet available at the backyard garden.

Wat Chom Sawan, situated in the picturesque province of Phrae, Thailand, is a must-see attraction known for its exquisite architectural design and rich historical significance. Constructed in 1900, this old temple boasts a unique fusion of Lanna and Burmese architectural styles. Adorned with intricate carvings and golden details at its grand entrance, the temple stands as a testament to the region's cultural heritage.
A Burmese style temple that is so ancient. Interesting architecture and history. There’s a small door by the hall that is for the owners to ride the elephants. You can also see Burmese inscriptions on the pillars. The yellow cloth that they are making, from what I heard is to wrap around the stupa and it takes around a year to complete one. Very interesting. Lucky I came with a guide.
Wilson Y — Google review
No entry fees to observe this precious historical site. You could so some donation and they provide you with the alms flowers to pay respect the Buddha. This is a must go site if you travel Phrae. There is a Shan Momestry opposite of this place with differnt attractions.

Old wooden temple just across the Wat Sawan Niwet. A bid hidden behind the parking area and located in a pretty overgrown garden this beautiful old temple can be found. Expect to spend about 10-15 minutes here looking around the temple ground. I enjoyed my time here and this is still the first and only wooden temple I found in Phrae
Kasper H — Google review
A must visit cultural site in Phrae. Very beautiful and peaceful old style Burmese temple. I was the only one there when I visited except for the caretakers.

An ancient temple made of wood. You tell that the temple has gone thru centuries of human civilizations from the floor board. A must visit site if you are in Phrae.
Raymond N — Google review
Just one kilometer from town hall on Yontrakit Koson road is Wat Chom Sawan, a Burmese architectural style temple which combines hall for religious rituals and monk's living quarters. Antiques found here include marble Buddha statues, statues made from woven bamboos coated with lacquer and ivory sculpture slabs with Burmese scripts.

This Wat gets points for history. It must be preserved for the future Generations. The temple is not the most beautiful Teakwood Temple but it is historic and it is very well-preserved the side of the temple has been a temple for over 1,000 years obviously this beautiful wooden Temple could not be 1,000 years old but it is very old and it is worth a visit
David W — Google review
A perfect example of a Burmese style temple easily recognizable by the roof. Sadly, it was undergoing renovations at the time of my visit. The interior is also recognizable as it is more square than a Thai style temple. The Buddha is made of bamboo and gilded. The temple is over 100 years old.

Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao Suchadaram is an ancient temple complex in Lampang known for its diverse architectural elements, including a gold-plated spire and statues. The 18th-century temple once housed the famous Emerald Buddha before it was moved to Bangkok's Wat Phra Kaew. The golden stupa and an ordination hall with mural paintings showcase Chiang Saen architecture style. Visitors can also explore a classic reclining Buddha and a museum displaying Lanna artifacts.
A Place of Peace and History This temple offers a serene and holy atmosphere that’s perfect for quiet reflection. The sacred pagoda is stunning, with intricate designs that showcase its spiritual significance. It’s a beautiful blend of tranquility, beauty, and history—highly recommended for anyone seeking peace and cultural inspiration.

An amazing experience, spiritually and artistically. It houses one of Thailand’s Emerald Buddhas and has a large reclining Buddha that’s well known. The Buddha in the newer main hall is quite large and impressive in size and design. In the mornings the pagoda shimmers of the sunlight, creating a visual sense of peace. This temple is one of Lampang’s treasures for sure.

Magnificently built located a few kilometres away from downtown and housed a 15th century solid gold image of Buddha inside the praying hall. A large golden chedi stands tall inside the compound. From the compilation of building structures and image existence this place is definitely an antiquated oldie. It's grandeur gives a feeling of calmness and inner peace. Mae Yom National Park

Nature & Parks
Mae Yom National Park, located in Phrae, is a hidden gem offering a serene escape into nature. The park boasts a lush teak forest and the tranquil Yom River running through its mountainous terrain. Spanning 350 square kilometers, it is home to diverse wildlife and offers various outdoor activities. Visitors can marvel at the Eng Mok Cliff's sea of fog at dawn and the unique rock formations of Kaeng Sue Ten in the middle of the river.
Small national park in Phrae with highlight attractions at Eng Mok Cliff with sea of fog early in the morning and Kaeng Sue Ten(แก่งเสือเต้น) with rocks formation in the middle of Mae Yom River running through it. Sea of fog can be found around winter approximately around November to January. Taking scenic route toward Lom Dong(หล่มด้ง) you should reach the scenic point just before the end of the road. The road is really winding but not too steep so it's a pretty easy ride. Tent camp and accommodation are around Kaeng Sue Ten area with small canteen available. I would recommend to come around November to December as the water is clearer, the air is cooler, and the trees are still green.

Covering nearly 455 km² across northern Thailand, Mae Yom National Park features the winding Yom River cutting through lush mountainous terrain of mixed evergreen and teak forest. Highlights include Dong Sak Ngam, home to extensive stands of towering teak; Kaeng Suea Ten, a natural river riffle perfect for camping and rafting (seasonal); and the enigmatic Lom Dong basin, which offers year-round water and scenic viewpoints. Wildlife sightings include elephants, serow, deer, wild boar, and diverse birdlife. The park offers basic amenities including a visitor center, campgrounds, and floating houses on the river. Open daily 09:00–17:00, with entrance fees ranging from THB 20 to 100 depending on nationality. Ideal visit season runs November through May, with foggy mornings and pleasant hiking conditions.

At least it’s only 100 baht per person but there’s not much to do here . Pretty view in terms of a nice river /rapids but that’s all there is . You pay to have river access but there is no hike or anything . We took the road through the park which eventually dead ended (it used to be another entrance to the park). There is rafting that happens here in certain seasons too but probably expensive ! Pretty area but not worth a detour

I happened to get in this park. Deserted. No cars running..only several road workers, not much. No one, no cars around you!! Road conditions is terrible like stones, dirt, holes, spilt oil...bumpy, not for riders...and there are black bears and elephants!!!!

Chae Son National Park

Nature & Parks
Nestled in a vast and picturesque landscape, Chae Son National Park is a haven of natural beauty. The park boasts mountains, forests, and stunning waterfalls, as well as year-round hot springs that are a major attraction. Visitors can immerse themselves in the rich forestland teeming with streams and wildlife. A highlight is the Chae Son Hot Wells, where natural hot water pools allow for unique experiences like boiling eggs or indulging in mineral baths.
Good hotspring with cold and hot water. You can buy raw eggs and boiled it as well. You can also take a bath privately, but for me the mineral foot bath is the best. Waterfall itself not far from here not recommend to swim at the waterfall since the hotspring will be better.
Grady L — Google review
I really enjoyed my visit, ended up spending most of my day here. There are 2 attraction in the main area: the Chae Son Hot Springs & the Chae Son Waterfall. The price is 200 TBH for foreigners, 100 TBH for Thais. The Hot Springs are extremely popular with domestic tourists. The main activities are boiling eggs, soaking the feet in the hot springs, and pickniking. The site is beautiful. Food and drink are available. The ticket includes access to a foot soaking area, small outdoor hot pools, and a stream where you can take a dip. The private bath areas are beautiful and cost only 50 TBH. Towels are available for rent. It's okay if you don't have a swimsuit, the rooms are fully private. There's also a massage pavilion, the price of a massage is only 200-300 TBH. You need to wait until a masseuse becomes available and they'll come get you, there's no front desk. For hikers, this is really an onsen first and national park second. There's only a very short path to the waterfall. The waterfall itself is unremarkable and swimming under it is prohibited. To get there, follow the stream up from the hot springs. The trail isn't marked so I ended up walking on the road. The trail is blocked beyond the 6th level of the waterfall. There was a signpost claiming that there's a 5km trail to the Mae Mon & Mae Khun Waterfalls. I couldn't find any info on this trail. There's also allegedly a "Mae Piak Nature Trail" somewhere in the park, but I couldn't locate this either. It's possible that the blocked off trail leads to these and you need to hire a guide to hike there. The park also allegedly has caves, couldn't get any info on them either. I gave it one star less because of the lack of hiking trails.

What an elegant park to visit. I almost thought I was back in Japan. It was that manicured especially in the hot springs area. The waterfall is impressive too with a small wall to the base leading up to the waterfall proper. Well worth a visit and can be easily combined with a visit the the sky temple, not 30 minutes up the road.

🌿 I visited the beautiful Chae Son National Park for 2 days and stayed one night at the campsite. If you’re driving from Chiang Mai, I highly recommend taking Route 1252. I mistakenly took the route through Mae Kampong village, which was very steep and challenging — not suitable for small cars like a Mazda 2 😄 🎟️ Entrance fee is 200 THB for foreigners, regardless of having a Thai work permit or pink card. Each national park in Thailand has its own policy, so always check ahead. The park is great for kids, with hot springs and a waterfall to explore. As other reviews mentioned: the bathrooms are clean and well-maintained. 💦 I definitely recommend taking an onsen bath at the hot springs — mine was 40°C and incredibly relaxing. They allow you to soak for 15 minutes, which was perfect. ☔ The only downside during our stay was the heavy rain, but despite that, we still had a lot of fun here. Highly recommended!

Great place to relax! Big and scenic area with multiple hot springs. You can boil eggs, have a picnic, massage and soak in one of private onsen cabins. Also there are bungalows for overnight rent. Foreigner entrance fee is 200 THB. Visit date: 26 Oct 2025

This is a chance to experience a real hot spring. You can see a lot of locals and the view is beautiful. It is worth a visit.
Jung-Woo C — Google review
Hot spring was fantastic, boiled some eggs while there, and enjoyed a great classic Thai massage.
Juul L — Google review
Great experience to feel the warmth coming from the spring and be able to use it for footbathing. You can rent a towel for 20 BTH. People buy eggs at the 3 shops higher up inside the park itsself and slowboil them in the hot water. You can also find a waterfall there with a trail besides it that goes far up. Very affordable entry, 200 BTH per adult (think it was 50 BTH for resident and 20 BTH for parking or the other way around). Only the road to there from Chiang-Mai was very long through the forest (2h almost).

Doi Phu Nang National Park

National park
Nature & Parks
Parks
Area of forested mountains known for Than Sawan waterfall, plus a nature trail & resident peacocks.
Spanning nearly 860 km² across Phayao Province, Doi Phu Nang National Park protects diverse ecosystems from highland forests to fertile river valleys. The park’s highlight includes the Than Sawan Waterfall, Doi Phu Nang Peak (1,202 m), and Thailand’s largest breeding ground for green peafowl (January–March). Visitors can explore forested trails, enjoy riverside waterfalls, and observe unique wildlife. Facilities include a ranger-run visitor centre, restrooms, campgrounds, and basic lodging—though food and gear should be brought along. Open daily 08:30–16:30, with modest entrance fees. Most favorable visit period is October through January. Highly recommended for nature lovers, wildlife watchers, and those seeking serenity in northern Thailand.
Meaw M — Google review
A nice national park for camping and walking. The campsite is next to the waterfall and there is restaurant inside the park in cheap price. Very convenient. Peafowls should be around on January to March but we did not see one on 23 January.

I really like this place. The waterfalls is very nice and a lot of water which you could jump and swim. The campground is nice.
Phakapan — Google review
Important routing advice: If you are coming from Phayao (just over an hour's drive), gps will guide you right in to the park, but if you come from Lampang, gps will have you exit highway 1 near Mae Wa, and this route eventually ends up on a dirt road with 40 km still to go. Continue north on highway 1 to highway 120 and come in that way. That said, this was a nice park. Entry was 100 thb plus 30 for a car. Main attraction is the waterfall, which I will review separately. Camping here looks peaceful. There's a snack bar and a restaurant, although I had trouble getting someone's attention there and eventually gave up on getting a coffee. There's also a short nature trail, 1.3 km loop which took my less than 30 minutes to walk. Not that interesting of a walk, but good for exercise if you have the time. Trail starts above the first aid house and ends near the snack bar. And speaking of the first aid house, they seem to be safety conscious here. In addition to first aid, there was also a ranger stationed by the waterfall, who kept an eye on me any time I was near the water. Comforting to me. Toilets are in numerous locations, even down by the waterfall.

Probably the prettiest twin waterfalls I've visited. Enchanting and surreal. Must visit but do it off-peak. If you're lucky, a pet peacock will be there to greet you.

Actual entrance is a little further west down the road. Hands down the best park I've been to. Not crowded. Beautiful waterfalls. Easy hike. Look out for peacocks! Good cheap restaurant on site as well.

Rest stop with stalls selling baskets of eggs to boil in the hot spring, plus a relaxing footbath.
This rest stop is incredibly well-organized and has everything you need! A highlight: you can cook eggs in a hot spring. Vendors walk around with baskets containing three eggs, which you can buy for 20 baht and boil right there. It’s a unique experience

One of our favorite places to visit when traveling from Mai Sai in the north to Chiang Mai. We've stopped here several times, even once very late at night. The coffee shop is only open until early evening. But you can use the hot springs anytime. The water is very hot. There are boiled eggs you can purchase but also other cafe items from the coffee shop. It's was only ever crowded one time. A tour bus came around noon. Please note there are two of these places on each side of the highway. The one near the temples are very run down. Go to the other one with 91Coffee shop. 这是一个美丽的地方。这里有一家咖啡和茶馆,价格不贵,很适合拍照。Zhè shì yīgè měilì dì dìfāng. Zhè li yǒu yījiā kāfēi hé cháguǎn, jiàgé bù guì, hěn shìhé pāizhào.

Great place maintained by locals. There are various shops if you want to buy something and some nice place to get yourself a simple homemade breakfast with some good coffee. There is a toilet at the back of the place, the toilet is hygienic and there is a charge of 5 Baht to enter. The most fun part is you can buy eggs and put them in a basket and boil them in the hot springs.
Shantanu D — Google review
It is an interesting phenomenon to see boiling hot water to break up from the ground. Easy to park around on both side of the road. But be careful with the traffic. All kinds of goodies for sale, food and souveniers. You can boil some quail eggs for a buck in the hot water. Take nice pictures and even enjoy the soothing benefits of the hot water on your skin. There is a part where the water can be waded and it's not burning hot anymore. A lot of fun for the whole family.

Right off the road leading to Chiang Rai temples, there’s a cute little hot spring. Steaming in the front right by the sign and there’s a foot spa available by the shops (can dip in your feet for free!) There’s also a deserted mineral bath spa in the back - creepy but cool to walk through!
Sarah P — Google review
A nice stop over on the way to Chiang Rai. Foot bath is nice and the hard boiled egg at $20 is very good which they used they got spring water to boil the egg. There is a stall selling delicious braised pork knuckles rice.

We stopped at Mae Kachan Hot Springs during our drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, and it turned out to be one of our favorite unscheduled pauses. Located right off the highway in Moo 6, Pha Soet Phatthana Village, the spot is a popular rest stop—complete with cafes, souvenir shops, and stalls selling fresh fruit, snacks, and souvenirs. The highlight is the natural hot spring pools, where boiling water gushes from the ground at around 90°C—hot enough to cook eggs in just a few minutes. We bought a few eggs (chicken and quail) and had fun boiling them right there on the spot. A quirky and memorable experience! While the main hot spring is too hot for dipping, there’s a smaller diverted stream where the temperature is just right for soaking your feet. It felt great to give our tired legs a warm soak after hours on the road. There were even foot-soak setups offered by nearby shops if you wanted to make it a little more indulgent. The facilities were basic but decent. There was no entrance fee, just a small charge for using the restrooms. The area was bustling but still relaxing, with friendly vendors and fellow travelers stopping for a break. It’s not a destination you’ll spend hours at, but as a quick and unique roadside stop, it’s well worth pulling over for. Definitely a fun way to break up the journey!

On my way to the White Temple, I stopped at Thaweesin Hot Spring for a quick breakp. The hot spring is surrounded by beautiful greenery, and it’s a fun spot to relax for a bit. The atmosphere felt very local and peaceful, with a few snack stalls and places to grab a drink. It’s not a place I’d spend hours at, but it was perfect for stretching my legs and enjoying the natural hot spring vibes before continuing the drive. From The Astra Sky River in Chiang Mai, we got there by car on the way to the White Temple—it’s about halfway and made for a great pit stop.

Nice spot to stop on the way to Chiang rai, with a temple replica which is in a ruin state. Nice for pictures and to experience egg boiling in a natural hot spring. Souvenirs, clothes and food can be bought from here too. Its nice stopping and dipping your feet in the water (with caution). The sulphur smell adds to the experience.

We had a toilet stop at this hot spring on the way to Chiang Rai. There are some shops here and also free areas of the hot spring where to dip our feet into the warm waters. There is also a hot spring that can cook eggs, though we didn't try.

Super touristy, a lot of Chinese tourists just soaking their feet and super noisy, not much views and 5 baht per person toilet fee, not much to see just a pit stop with 20baht eggs, speaking of eggs I doubt it’s natural hot spring the entire place smells like eggs even the ‘fresh’ water so yeah

Accessible by boat, this islet in a lake is a well-known pilgrimage site with a Buddha statue.
Very nice short trip to the lake temple. The boat is the fun here. I paid 100 bhat because I was with 2 more people. If you come alone it's 300 bhat. Don't forget to tip the driver 👌

An old temple in the middle of the lake which a boat ride is needed. Nothing much to do there but you can enjoy the view on the way. What a poor experience to see the local just caught fishes, turtles literally from the lake itself and put them in a bucket for anyone to pay some amount of money in order to let them free. What an easy way to do some business!

Great place to visit in Phayao Lake. Small shrine with wooden long boat ride to the island in the middle of the lake for only 50 baht. Phayao Lake at sunset is very beautiful. Recommended highly for a visit by eBike CNX and our group riders.

I came here during the rainy season. There are few people and the ticket for the boat ride is about 50 baht per person (if there are 5 visitors).

Wat Tilok Aram isn't your everyday temple—it's literally sitting pretty in the middle of Kwan Phayao Lake, like the chillest monk on a giant floating meditation mat 🛶🕉️. You have to take a short boat ride to reach it, giving you bonus points for feeling like Indiana Jones, but with fewer snakes and more serene vibes. Once you're there, the temple itself isn't huge, but that's kind of the charm. It's peaceful, tranquil, and offers views across the lake that are so calming they might just lower your blood pressure better than meditation itself. It's a unique spot for photos, contemplation, or just awkwardly standing around trying to absorb spiritual enlightenment. Overall, Wat Tilok Aram is a must-see if you're around Phayao—if only for the bragging rights of having visited a temple that requires actual paddling skills. Definitely bring your camera and some small change for the boat ride—enlightenment might be free, but the boat isn’t! 🚣✨

- 50 Baht each person for 6 people on boat - 100 Baht each person for 2 people on boat - Better give some extra tips to the driver, he got a cheap daily paid. Many rounds don’t help him to get more money. The drivers deserve tips! - Staff shouldn’t clean off flowers when visitors still there. It’s better to clean when visitors left, otherwise next time visitors would never want to buy flowers from the pier.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Phayao Lake is a vast body of water located in northern Thailand that is home to over 50 species of fish and a unique variety of aquatic plants. It is the largest swamp in this region and serves as a symbol of Phayao's natural beauty. The water level is artificially controlled to prevent dryness outside of the wet season, while being surrounded by scenic mountains makes it an ideal spot for watching beautiful sunsets.
This is the center of attraction in phayao province...people come here after work on weekdays to just chill and enjoy the view of the lake. On saturdays and sundays they have morning market and evening market as well. Travel time from mochit bus terminal is 10hours via sombat tour bus or you may opt to visit chiangmai first then ride a bus from chisngmai to phayao three hours drive. Come and see phayao province for your personal experience.

If you use google by putting in Phayao Lake you will end up on the super quiet side of the city. There is ‘nothing’ here. You will see local people fishing and you will see other tourists turning their cars here. The local person I spoke with told me that on a daily base he is sending tourists back because tourists wanted to go downtown. So enjoy Phayao Lake but better put in an address of a hotel/restaurant that is located downtown to really end up downtown.

When I entered the temple I was simply not prepared for what I was going to see. Full of large and small temples, observation points, waterfalls, even a jungle full of fairy tale creatures. Lots of Buddha statues of all possible types and even an attraction with wall paintings that glow in the dark. It is mandatory to climb the bridge with a transparent floor to an observation point with a spectacular view of the entire temple with a background of mountains.

Wat Saeng Kaeo Phothiyan is an impressive and colorful Buddhist temple complex located in Mae Suai District, Chiang Rai Province, Northern Thailand. Although not as well known as the famous White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), it has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors seeking a unique cultural and spiritual experience. 🏛️ History and Background The temple was founded in 2006 at the initiative of the respected monk Kruba Ariyachat Ariyajitto, and construction began in 2010. It is dedicated to Kruba Srivichai (1878–1939), a highly revered monk in Northern Thailand. The complex is still under development, but many of its elements are already completed and open to visitors. The temple was hit by a massive fire on the night of June 22, 2024. The fire broke out at around 00:35 and particularly damaged the temple's Viharn (prayer hall), which is known for its rich decoration and artistic details. The extinguishing work lasted until around 03:00, and the damage was estimated at around 100 million baht

Wat Sang Keow is a truly unique and enchanting temple located in northern Thailand. From the moment you arrive, the experience begins just outside the temple grounds. The car park is situated away from the main complex, and you'll notice a lottery stall nearby — likely attracting hopeful punters seeking blessings from the renowned abbot, Kruba Aliyachart, known for his miraculous presence. As you approach the temple, a distinctive symbol catches your eye — the Peacock King, representing the temple’s identity and spiritual essence. Climbing a short flight of stairs, you’re greeted by impressive statues of Phra Sangkachai and Phra Upakut, followed by a towering golden image of Kruba Sivichai. These spiritual figures set the tone for the deeply sacred atmosphere ahead. Entering deeper into the temple grounds, you’ll find yourself wandering through what feels like a mystical garden. It's beautifully designed yet slightly disorienting — some even call it magical. Without following the signs closely, it’s easy to lose your way. But trust your instincts, and you may be fortunate enough to meet the master himself — Kruba Aliyachart, the Peacock King. Meeting him is a calming and powerful experience. His serene presence brings an unexpected sense of peace and spiritual clarity. Wat Sang Keow is truly a hidden gem, blending mystery, culture, and devotion. Due to the abbot’s growing fame, the temple draws many international visitors, and meeting him is not guaranteed. Still, it’s a must-visit for any spiritual seeker in Chiang Rai.

There's a lot of maintenance going on here at the moment but even still: if you venture through the gardens and around the maintenance works this place is still very vast. When we arrived at 9am we were the only ones there which was both amazing and a little spooky :D

Beautiful temple complex with many life- size statues of historical and Buddhist figures with a massive large scale buddah, flanked by golden monks. If you go to change my you should take the day trip to Chiang Rai and Watsangkaew Phothiyan

If I were to make a Top Nine list of wats (temples), I would consider this one! Absolutely beautiful with the statues, buildings, Mountain View, and skywalk. They also have many amulets here. You can easily spend the day here walking around, reflecting, and in meditation. A must see location! #travelthailand

I had an unforgettable stay at Rai Ruen Rom. I stumbled across this slice of heaven when google searching organic farmstays in Thailand. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with wonderful Thai hospitality by Jan, Apple, and the whole team. I got to tour the farm and took part in tie-dyeing, infusing honey with wildflowers, baking cookies, and walking around the property with the happiest dogs. Then there were the meals. So good! All meals were generous and healthy and delicious. My accommodation was beautifully modern and I got to see breathtaking views of the night sky and sunrise. I left RRR recharged, informed, and inspired to implement some of their ideas into my own future farm. Though I was only there for two days, the experience left a lasting impression, and I can’t wait to return. Thank you, Apple, Jan, and everyone at RRR. You made me feel right at home and few experiences are as genuine as this.

This place isn't just a farm stay—it's like being part of a big, welcoming family. Apple and her crew go all out to make sure you feel right at home. I stayed in this cool tent that felt more like glamorous camping. It was super clean and comfy, and the mountain views were amazing. Being surrounded by nature was so relaxing; it's the perfect break from city life. There is an option to stay in a completely private house, with rooftop area and sunrise view. Whenever you need to get some work done outside of your staying place, the restaurant's terrace is a chill spot with Wi-Fi, bird songs and of course delicious food! There is a lot to do here, like biking, swimming in the lake, and joining fun workshops on stuff like Tie Dye, Wild Honey, Thai massage and many more (look at the photos). The best part? They're all about being eco-friendly and natural. They'll even chat with you about healthy living and sustainability if you're keen. Basically, Rai Ruen Rom is more than just a place to crash; it's like a little paradise where you can unwind and soak up the good vibes.

A huge place full of many experiences. From nice comfortable resort to goat barn to rice field to mountain to farms. Restaurant is also very chilled and offering good food. Most of the menu is organic, grown by themselves. Price is not cheap but everything comes with quality.

This is a great full experience. The cafe on premise is full of delicious and unique food and drinks, the little houses area extremely cozy and comfortable, and the farm has a handful of activities to choose from. The views of the farm from the house is one of the most beautiful views. The private dinner on the roof of the house was a experience as well. I would give more stars if I could, we’re definitely going to come back here regularly.

Apple the owner spoke perfect english and she made us feel very welcom on her farm. We didn't expect such high quality and class truely an exceptional stay. One night and it included many activities. The roofttop house was utterly beautiful and they prepared a traditional thai bbq on the roof for us. All food and drink has been organically produced here on the farm. Apple the guide explained to us all the production and harvesting, and we sampled everything....lots of flower, leaf and fruit eating. The kids and especially us adults loved the salt egg preservation and natural tye-dye. Delicious food and drinks, and a conscious sustainable community project. Definately worth a visit for a few days or even to stay for volunteer work. Thank you so much for this unexpected and stimulating visit. Anna and family from the Basque country. Spain

We had the best time here! Is the staff and owners are very friendly and you feel like part of the family and community. Accommodation is great, food is delicious and portions large, activities are fun and it is eye opening to learn more about the Thai plants and how it can be used in different products. We can’t wait to come again!

It was very wow ! We fell in love with this place from the first minute. Some of our guys said "I would like to stay here" during first day. We were amazed how workers took care of us, solved any problem we had, smiled to us any time. They were listening to any our request, to change something or find something. Farm is amazing place for any event, it is remote, you can concentrate and work together. Moreover, nature around really helps to relax. In the end of our event we had a feeling that we didnt want to go home :) Everything is ecological, even shampoo :) Food is very tasty, also they had some activities, lectures you can join, to learn about the place, eco-farming, eco-lifestyle and so on. Also there is a great opportunity for volunteering on the eco-farm, we also helped them. It is the place to be :) Thanks a lot to Apple and all her family ! You do a great job.

Amazing farm stay experience. The founder was very welcoming and gave us a tour around her property to share all the sustainable farming practices and diverse crops. The food was very fresh and tasty as well. We stayed in the tents which were very clean. The bathrooms were also clean and had very hot water! For those staying, they also have activities such as DIY honey, cookie making, and tie die.

Doi Chang is a picturesque mountain destination in Thailand, boasting an elevation of over 5,500 feet and adorned with lush coffee plantations. The area offers excellent opportunities for hill trekking and exploration. Visitors can revel in the natural beauty at Temple Park and Doi Chang Viewpoint, where they can take in the sights of natural forests, macadamia plantations, and a meticulously curated garden featuring bamboo and exotic trees. The cool mountain air provides a refreshing atmosphere for travelers to enjoy.
So much development on the mountain- lots of camping domes and coffee places. The road is slightly narrow but not a difficult drive. Fantastic views all along the summit

If you are thinking about doing this on a scooter then don’t. If you don’t have enough qualifications to rent a motorbike then you probably don’t have enough experience to do these roads. Didn’t help there were roadworks at some points throughout the journey which were half the road and really bumpy. The views yes, were amazing but just either get a proper motorbike and go as a tour or get a grab.

Beautiful place to visit in morning and evening. Can enjoy very scenic views around and can stop for a play in water on the way and can capture plenty of images with nature. Will enjoy the ride. During spring you will get to see beautiful birds around. Can stop of coffee and breakfast at hotels and get to see beautiful views from hotels. I had visited BC2 and had really great time with cup of coffe and my love.

Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple, is a contemporary Buddhist temple located in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Designed by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, it features a unique white exterior with intricate designs and unconventional architecture. Inside, visitors can explore unusual murals and decorations along with odd sculptures. The temple aims to provide a space for learning and meditation to promote the teachings of Buddhism.
The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) in Chiang Rai is one of Thailand’s most surreal sights — pure white, shimmering with mirrored glass under the sun. The details feel almost otherworldly, blending Buddhist symbolism with modern art. Photos are allowed outside but not inside, where the murals surprise you with unexpected imagery. Visit early morning to avoid glare and crowds. It’s both art and reflection in one unforgettable stop.
Noel M — Google review
Absolutely stunning place! The White Temple is unlike anything I’ve ever seen — so detailed and creative. The mix of traditional and modern art makes it really unique. It can get busy, but it’s totally worth visiting. A must-see when you’re in Chiang Rai.
Marco T — Google review
The famous white temple was crafted intricately, and the facade structures were meticulously designed and built. The founder-cum-artist, Charlermcha Kositpipat, has a modern way of preaching the Buddhist teachings. It amazes me how one could have such a creative mind, effort and energy to craft and build such a majestic temple. Entrance is chargeable to foreigners only. Local Thai gets to enjoy free entry.

View @ Wat Rong Khun / White Temple. . Remarkable for its dazzling white design, a symbol of purity and wisdom, the temple was designed and self-funded by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat since 1997. . Crossing the Bridge Of The Cycle Of Rebirth, beneath which hundreds of sculptured outstretched hands of desire and suffering, is a depiction of overcoming temptation to reach enlightenment. . The juxtaposition of the Golden Toilet is meant to represent purity transcending wealth.

This temple is definitely a work of art. Very detailed. For 100 baht this is a great value. I guarantee you will have so many beautiful photos. 100% worth it. It is really popular so you can expect it to be crowded.
Filip — Google review
The temple is simply mind-blowing. You could spend hours examining every detail—it's truly breathtaking and left us speechless. Probably the most original and unique temple in Thailand. If there’s one downside, it’s that it’s always packed with tourists, so it isn’t easy to appreciate the details up close, especially on the entrance bridge.

The White Temple in Chiang Rai is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen. I really loved the bright white colour, it looks so clean and striking, especially when the sun hits it. The details of the design are incredible. You can really see the effort and creativity that went into building it. Such an amazing place to visit if you love art, culture, and architecture.

Very detailed Temple with some great features. 100TBH entry per person. Plenty of other things to look at on the grounds which are free. Recommend once you've entered the main Temple to turn around and look at the walls behind the doors. Some very odd characters being displayed.

Park
Singha Park Chiang Rai is a vast and picturesque park located near the White Temple. It offers a farm-like setting with tea plantations, orchards, and various attractions. While entry is free, it's advisable to arrange transportation due to its size. Visitors can explore the park by cycling along dedicated scenic routes or renting buggies for a more leisurely tour. The park features a petting zoo, fish feeding areas, and even a zip line for adventurous souls.
Beautiful, spacious, clean and well-kept park, with a wonderful, species-appropriate small zoo. With the golf cart you can comfortably drive around all the attractions.
Mirko S — Google review
Singha Park in Chiang Rai is a beautiful escape with a mix of amazing experiences and some challenges. The park is stunning, with sprawling tea plantations, vibrant flower gardens, and scenic lakes that make for incredible photos, especially at the iconic golden Singha lion statue. The variety of activities—biking, zip-lining, and feeding animals like giraffes and zebras at the petting zoo—is fantastic, especially for families. The staff are friendly, and the park is well-maintained, with clean facilities and tasty food at Singha Café (the Oolong tea is a must-try!). Events like the International Balloon Fiesta in February add a magical touch. However, hotter days can make exploring the massive 12.8 km² park tough, as there’s limited shade in open areas, and it can feel exhausting without enough breaks. I recommend visiting early in the morning or during cooler months (November-February) to avoid the heat. The tram (150 THB) or bike rentals (200 THB for 90 minutes) are great for getting around, but costs for activities can add up. Bring water, sunscreen, and snacks, as refreshment stands are spread out. Despite the heat challenge, Singha Park’s natural beauty and fun vibe make it a must-visit in Chiang Rai—just plan wisely
MEHULRAJ N — Google review
I just visited Singha Park Chiang Rai and honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful and relaxing places I’ve been to in Thailand. The moment I arrived, I was blown away by how big and green it is. There are mountains in the background, huge flower fields, and a cool breeze that makes you feel so fresh — such a nice change from the busy air in Bangkok! I rented a bicycle and rode around the park, stopping every few minutes just to take photos because every corner looked like a postcard. What really surprised me was how clean and well-kept everything is. The staff are super friendly, and the food and drinks at the cafés inside are great — especially the tea and ice cream made from local ingredients. I also got to feed the animals, like giraffes and zebras, which was really fun and unexpected. It’s such a good place to bring family or friends, or even just come alone to relax. The whole place just gives off peaceful, happy vibes. Watching the sunset over the lake was one of the best moments of my trip. If you’re ever in Chiang Rai, I really recommend stopping by Singha Park — it’s 100% worth it!
Bonkerp — Google review
We visited the park in November and rented a 2-seater golf cart, which cost 600 THB, plus an entrance fee of 50 THB per person. So the total for two people was 700 THB. The golf cart was convenient for exploring the large area at our own pace. They also offer other transport options like a guided tour bus (150 THB per person), electric bicycles, and larger golf carts that seat 4 or 6 people, ideal for families or groups. During our visit, the flowers were not in full bloom, possibly due to the season (November), so some areas looked a bit dry or sparse. However, the overall landscape was still well-maintained and pleasant for a relaxed ride. The park also includes a small zoo, which kids would likely enjoy, and an activity center with games and attractions for families. It’s a nice spot to spend a few quiet hours away from the city with nature and light recreation. If you plan to visit, going during peak bloom season may offer a more vibrant experience. Still, it was worth the visit, and the golf cart made the trip comfortable and enjoyable.
Chameera D — Google review
Surely better in high season, when no rain and activities work non stop. 150 bath for the bus to have 6 stops around the park. Or you can rent a golf chart or ride a bike 🚲. Enjoy

Khun Korn Forest Park Waterfall is a magical place nestled in the forest, offering a beautiful cascade after an easy 30-minute hike. Accessible via well-maintained roads, it's just a 35-minute motorbike ride from Chiang Rai. The park features lush trails and the refreshing waterfall, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts to unwind.
This is our favourite waterfall, with a trail spanning approximately 3 kilometres in a full loop. For the most scenic experience, take the first bamboo bridge on the right when you encounter it—it’s a picturesque starting point. The trail offers a raw, natural charm surrounded by lush greenery and is relatively easy to navigate. Once you reach the waterfall, you can even descend to enjoy a refreshing shower, provided you don’t mind the cold water. We highly recommend visiting if you’re in Chiang Rai, and the best part is that entry is completely free.

It’s a very small waterfall in others season! Why do you close it? We wanted to see the waterfall in raining season, how is it gonna be like, we wanted to see how it’s look when it got more water! You should close only when it is monsoon! And not this 4 km. To the water fall, at least let people enjoy the picnic area! Close for 3 months! This is crazy and lazy of the staffs. There are so many technology to predict the weather and tide!! Get smart and use it

Beautiful, big waterfall with free entry and an easy 30 minute walk to it. You cannot swim in it but you get soaked just standing next to it which is a nice cooling experience. Highly recommend!
Rose H — Google review
It's a great and a big waterfall. Before you choose to visit this waterfall, make sure you're ready to hike 1.5 kilometres in a mountain forest with different plants and animals. Once you get there, you'll will need to find a place where you aren't going to get wet from the breeze of waterfall, also you can go for kind of swim but it's not deep enough. It's definitely worth visiting this place.

Great waterfall to visit from Chiang Rai. It’s about 1.5km to reach the top and then you’re amazed by stunning views! There is a sign about snakes at the beginning of the trail and we did see one. It was not crowded at all. Recommendation to wear sneakers. Easy hike. You can come back via the bamboo bridges which is a great experience!

Chiang Rai Night Bazaar is a bustling and compact night market that offers a variety of experiences. Visitors can explore street food stalls, shop for apparel, jewelry, and gifts, and enjoy live entertainment. The market is located near the ancient temple in Mueang Chiang Rai district, which holds historical significance in the province. It features the prominent Emerald Buddha and other magnificent Buddha statues. Additionally, the area around Jedyod road offers backpacker bars and affordable dining options.
The food centre at the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar has a wide variety of local Thai food stalls. There’s a stage for live music, which usually adds a lively vibe—but during our visit, it was raining and the low season, so there were plenty of empty seats. Still, we had a great time! We ordered a hotpot that came with a generous basket of vegetables and a large plate of meat, prawns, and cuttlefish—all for just 200 baht. It sounded too good to be true, so we asked three times to confirm the price—and yes, it really was that affordable! We also got vegetarian gyoza from another stall and finished our meal with a tasty box of mango sticky rice for 50 baht. There are many stalls offering a good range of local dishes, so it’s easy to find something you’ll enjoy. Highly recommend this place for a casual and budget-friendly dinner. By the way, we had a fabulous massage just a 3-minute walk away at Chiang Rai Nice Massage. Definitely worth checking out while you're in the area!

The Saturday Night Market in Chiang Rai is one of the most impressive and lively markets I’ve ever visited. Stretching for what feels like kilometers, the walk through the market is long and seemingly endless, filled with a vibrant mix of food, culture, and shopping. It’s a true sensory experience that captures the spirit of northern Thailand. The food selection is absolutely massive. You’ll find everything from Lanna-style rice dishes, fried pork and chicken, pad Thai, braised pork rice, to sweet treats like Thai pancakes, fruit desserts, and colorful cakes. I personally tried the fried omelette rice and fried pork—both were cooked perfectly, full of flavor and very satisfying. The tom yum soup I had was also rich and delightfully spicy, a perfect example of authentic Thai cuisine. Beyond food, the market offers rows of clothing stalls, handmade souvenirs, and traditional crafts. While most items are reasonably priced, it's good to stay aware of tourist mark-ups. A little bargaining goes a long way here. Adding to the festive atmosphere is live cultural entertainment, including traditional Thai dance performances right in the middle of the street. Locals and tourists alike are encouraged to join in and enjoy the rhythm, adding a wholesome community feel to the market. Whether you're there to shop, eat, or just soak in the atmosphere, the Saturday Night Market in Chiang Rai is an unforgettable experience. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to explore the local culture in an authentic and exciting way.

Must do in Chiang Rai, this little Thailand town is most alive at night. Most of the vendors are sweet and no pressure. But some of the best deals we found on zipperless luggage, and clothes souvenirs were at this market. For example, I purchased a brand new crocodile skin wallet (2 tone), high quality for 950 TB ($29 USD). Crazy! The Thai food is always amazing and please interact with the Thai people, they are the best. Tip - take the Tuk Tuk taxi’s every you can, they are unforgettable! We got the “wild ride of Mr. Toad” more than once! Highly recommend the night bazaar!
Steven N — Google review
Very different from the night markets in the South. Quiet and spread over a couple of streets, it has 2 central venues with a stage, one offering western music and another Thai music, both live. There are eateries surrounding the stage and has a party atmosphere about it. Kids running around and and parents doing their own things. Did so clothes shopping. The bust stand is the landmark if you have to Google maps it.
Christopher P — Google review
Lots of souvenirs and standard tourist clothes on offer. A few unique art stalls. A small food court area offering various Thai, hotpot and western food. More expensive than other local markets but some stalls have reasonable prices 60 baht+ for cheapest dishes. Chairs and tables get taken quickly, seating in the middle is not covered so was wet when we arrived.
Alex M — Google review
This night market of Chiang Rai is located right near the bus stop. The food here is very tasty and there are many options to eat here. The seating arrangement and lighting are very good, but the crowd here was very less.

The Chiang Rai Clock Tower is a stunning architectural masterpiece located in the heart of a traffic circle. Designed by renowned artist and architect Chalermchai Kositpipat, it bears resemblance to the iconic White Temple with its distinctive style. At night, the tower comes alive with colorful lights, creating a surreal environment.
It’s a golden clock that has a light show every hour on the hour starting at 8pm. No tickets, it’s just in the middle of the street. The birds make the experience more dramatic. They are like paid actors moving to the rhythm. However, it’s nothing crazy and can be missed if no time.
Rasha M — Google review
Best time to view the light show is 8pm, where it is dark enough. It runs for approximately 10-15 minutes. Only thing that ruins it is the constant flow of traffic on the round about. But still worth viewing.
Shane H — Google review
The Chiang Rai Clock Tower is one of the city’s most photogenic landmarks, designed by the same artist behind the White Temple. Its golden structure gleams by day, but the real highlight is the evening light show, when it glows in shifting colors set to gentle music (around 7, 8, and 9 p.m.). Located in the city center, it’s easy to stop by after dinner or while exploring nearby cafés. A short but memorable sight that perfectly captures Chiang Rai’s artistic flair.
Noel M — Google review
The clock tower was beautiful and I visited during the light show which goes on twice a night. It was pretty, but not what I was expecting. There is a song that plays and the tower changes colors. If you are already at the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, you could walk the couple of minutes to check it out.

Wat Phra Kaew Chiang Rai, a 14th-century temple located in Mueang Chiang Rai district, is home to the revered Emerald Buddha, discovered on the temple grounds in 1434. Originally known as Wat Pa Ya or Wat Pa Yia, it was renamed in 1977 after the discovery of the Emerald Buddha image. The temple features a multi-faced ubosot built in 2433 and has undergone restoration over time.
A must visit if in Chiang Rai, the temples with their historical value, the museum is very interesting and so well set out. There are Buddhist meetings every Tuesday at 9.30 am where everyone is invited to join, and so interesting

Our visit to Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai was a highlight of our trip, offering a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and stunning architecture! Located in the heart of the city near the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, this temple is easily accessible yet feels like a serene retreat from the bustling streets. Known as the original home of the Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok), Wat Phra Kaew holds immense cultural significance, and its peaceful ambiance made our visit unforgettable. The temple complex is beautifully maintained, with lush gardens, intricate statues, and vibrant Lanna-style buildings adorned with red and gold details. The main hall houses a replica of the Emerald Buddha, crafted with exquisite detail, and the surrounding murals depicting Buddhist tales are mesmerizing. We were particularly drawn to the Phra Yok Museum on-site, which displays rare Lanna artifacts, including jade Buddha images and ancient scriptures. a true gem in Chiang Rai that we’d highly recommend to anyone exploring the city!

This is one of the most amazing temples I’ve ever been to - the vibe and atmosphere is uniquely indescribable - the grounds are so green and well-maintained and all the structures on the temple territory are incredibly beautiful. They also have English-language meetings on Buddhism every Tuesday where you can talk with the monks.

This temple offers a complete blend of history, spirituality, and stunning architecture! The place accessible yet feels like a silent place full of solace. The building of this temple is well-maintained, with some gardens, statues, and red-gold ornaments around. Not only that, there is a Phra Yok Museum on-site, which depicting artifacts, and lots of a gems. Also, I enjoy my day dreaming here!

Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai (also known as the Emerald Buddha Temple) is a peaceful, more traditional spot that feels very different from the flashy White and Blue Temples. It’s not touristy at all, which actually makes it a really nice break — quiet, calm, and very well maintained. There is a school for monks and locals come pray here. The temple is famous because the original Emerald Buddha (now in Bangkok’s Grand Palace) was discovered here centuries ago. The one you see now is a beautiful green jade replica, still very impressive and treated with a lot of respect. The whole complex has a very local, authentic vibe — more focused on spirituality than on Instagram posts. There’s no entrance fee. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered), especially if you plan to enter the main hall. It’s less strict than the White Temple, but still a sacred place. They also have a small museum on the grounds with historical artifacts and info about the Emerald Buddha. We spent about 15 minutes - more if you take time to read the signs and enjoy the surroundings. It’s located close to the city center, so very easy to combine with the Blue Temple.

As any real temple, it's always good and peaceful but what tries to destroy it are some evil creatures around it. Such a holy place and some souls that have nothing else to do than gossiping and staring at others when looking on the mirror is so difficult. These men kept playing cards and talking about the farang and looking bad at me, especially the pink shirt one. Good examples to work in a temple!

Really nice temple.. plenty of green, air feels very fresh here. Also not many tourists, quite relaxing. Walk up the steps and you will see a magnificent scene, green marble? walls. Recommended , one of the nicest ones in the area

All pictures are the Emerald Buddha statue taken at Wat-Pra-Kaew in Chiang Rai province. Please come to visit and study the history of the Emerald Buddha statue as well as immerse with land/temple where the real statue have been enshrined for centuries. 😊

Wat Huay Pla Kang is a temple complex located 6 km northwest of Chiang Rai city. It features a 9-floor pagoda with 12 surrounding structures and a giant statue of the bodhisattva Guan Yin, also known as the Goddess of Mercy. Despite being called 'Big Buddha,' it's not actually a Buddha statue. Visitors can climb to the highest level of the pagoda for stunning views over Chiang Rai by either using stairs or paying for an elevator ride.
Beautiful temples to visit,I really appreciated the experience on the statue in particular. With 10 baht you can use the lift and go in the head of the statue where you got a great views of the temple and the surrounding area. The internal of the statue is really well decorated aswell. Another good experience!

27/October/2025 Visited this temple near mid day. Beautiful temple. Huge carpark available. We arrived in rented car. One of the most calming place I have visited, highly recommended.

Big area with many thing to see and visit but mostly known for the very big buddha. Inside the statue you can use elevators to get to the top inside the statue for better views. They will ask an entrance fee for the elevator. Otherwise it is free to visit.

We visited this temple with red roofs and the 90m tall Guan Yin statue. The buggy ride up to the big statue is free but there is a donation box. Alternatively, there are stairs to walk up which are flanked by intricate white dragon sculptures. They also have a drinks stall that charges only THB 20 for an iced drink like coffee, chocolate and more. This is a good temple to visit in Chiang Rai.

Impressive Buddha, there is a temple at the base and you can take lift for 40 Bath to go to the top. View from the top is beautiful.

Beautiful temple especially during sunset. Not crowded. No entrance fee, only to get to the top by lift.

Huge Guanyin statue (is this largest in the world?). For unfit people there is a free shuttle taking visitors up to the Guanyin statue. Feeling peaceful exploring this place.

Great views from the top of the Buddha statue. Expect to take off your shoes and an elevator trip to the 24th floor.

(Translated by Google) In Pattaya, my wife and I purchased an excursion “The Golden Triangle and the North of Thailand”. They picked us up from our hotel in Pattaya and took us to the airport, along with other tourists. The flight from Bangkok to Chiang Rai lasted only 1 hour. At the Chiang Rai airport we were greeted with gifts in the form of juicy pineapples) On the first day we toured the fabulous temples of Chiang Rai and visited thermal springs. In the evening we checked into an eco hotel, upon arrival we had a massage and then dinner. We slept soundly, as the hotel is located in a mountainous area. On the second day our adventure became more and more exciting. We visited mountain tribes, tea plantations, fruit plantations, and the Golden Triangle. And in the evening we were taken to the airport in Chiang Rai. Bottom line: next year, we decided to spend more time in the north of Thailand. There are so many interesting things here.

Wat Tha Ton

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Wat Tha Ton is a captivating temple complex nestled in the hills of northern Thailand, just a stone's throw from the Burmese border. Originally featuring only its main stupa, this serene site has expanded to accommodate an influx of visitors, adding several structures that enhance its grandeur. Perched atop a hill, Wat Tha Ton offers breathtaking views of nearby villages and the river winding below.
A must-see temple when you are around in the area. Great views!

Still lovely, but it used to be an international meditation centre, and now it is all locked up.

Breath taking and a must see. The Temple spans on multiple levels of the mountain overlooking the valley. This is definitely worth a stop. Don’t forget to donate. They have a free kitchen for those in need and feed the needy. Good people building credit...jump in and do the same.

Nice main hall, nice views, worth a pit stop if in the area. We saw monks in a classroom working on their school work, too.

The temple stay at the base of mountain nearby the river Gok. The pagoda was built on the top of mountain where people can enjoy the panoramic view of Gok river and the Burma frontier. In the early morning, one can also enjoy the huge of foggy that cover all here.

Baan Dam Museum

Museums
Baan Dam Museum, also known as the Black House, is a unique collection of wood buildings showcasing the artworks of Thawan Duchanee and other contemporary Thai artists. Situated in Chiang Rai, it is part of a day tour that includes visits to prominent temples such as the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Sueur Ten). The museum offers an intriguing experience with its dark-themed architecture and displays.
Great place for people looking for something different! I first came here ten plus years ago and the artist's work made a deep impression on me. His paintings exude strong strokes, and seeing paintings was worth the trip alone. Original paintings can be seen in the galleries next to the parking lot. The main structure on the museum grounds contains prints. One thing that stands out is the artist's prolific collection of things. Some interesting buildings on the grounds, one of which is reminiscent of a traditional house in Sulawesi (also some statues that looked Balinese in origin). Everything is visually engaging, definitely not a typical Thai attraction. There are artisans in the back building wood working, which was great to see as well. One staff said before COVID the museum would receive two to three thousand guests per day, but now visitors number around 500 per day. There are plenty of tourists here but it doesn't feel overcrowded. Well worth the visit.

Another must do. Very unique contemporary art museum. This place will keep you entertained and interested for quite a while, there are lots of very unique and different displays both housed in indoor and outdoor areas over quite a large complex. Lots to see and quite memorable.

I like Thai traditional painting and wood carving art. So this place is amazing for me. Peace but deliver to strong message about real life and greedy in human spirit. Love this place.

The Black House (Baan Dam Museum) in Chiang Rai is haunting and unforgettable — a mix of art, philosophy, and raw symbolism. Created by national artist Thawan Duchanee over 30 years, the complex features more than 40 black teak buildings filled with animal bones, horns, and surreal sculptures. Each structure reflects themes of life, death, and rebirth drawn from Buddhist and animist beliefs. It’s not a temple but an artist’s dark reflection on human nature. Come early for a quieter visit — the stillness makes it even more powerful.

Not particularly my cup of tea but might prove fascinating to some. Not really a museum as much as an art gallery/instillation. Quirky enough to be worth a quick stop for 80 bhat and a large garden with many extra small buildings to walk around and into too. Our favourite part was banging on the very large gong and TomTom drum ;)
Gillian H — Google review
It was an interesting museum — more of a walkthrough with random dead animals and art throughout the space. It’s a large piece of land so there’s definitely a lot to look at! There’s also a homeless cat shelter with all the cats - adorable 🐱 There were three cows in the middle of the museum which was interesting. Definitely a different vibe than the usual Buddha temples around, a little creepy but iNtErEsTiNg 🤨

Baan Dam Museum aka Black Museum was created by Thai artist Thawan Duchanee. It is basically a private art museum/gallery made up of around 40 various sizes and designes buildings almost are of them are painted in black. Building materials are dark wood, terracotta, glass, black coloured brick etc. The inside displays are mostly made of animal bones, animal structures, animal skins and horns etc. Sometimes it gives a very eery feel. Entrance fee is 80 Thai Baht per person.
