Nestled in the heart of Iceland, Gerðuberg Cliffs is a breathtaking natural wonder that captivates visitors with its striking black lava-rock columns. These impressive formations, some soaring up to 14 meters high, create a stunning geometric wall that stretches for about 500 meters. As you approach this protected nature reserve, you'll be greeted by an awe-inspiring landscape that's perfect for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
I adored this place. It was desert when we arrived. You can get to this place with a 2 mins drive on a dirt road (plenty of potholes) but overall it is easily reachable. The cliffs are awesome, you can even easily climb the cliffs to have an amazing view! Parking is free.
Michele C — Google review
This is worth stopping at as you pass through. There is a gravel road off the main road, but easily done in a standard car. The cliff/rock shapes are really different and unusual. This is a pretty quick stop and you can drive up to close to the cliff face and then explore from there. There is also a cute little church nearby too. Free to see.
Emily K — Google review
Lovely basalt columns with beautiful views of the expansive area including the mountains. Short climb up either on the steeper middle path or the less steep path on the left. It is a short stop. Use the main road and drive up the gravel path for 3 minutes rather than the 31minutes north then south again!
Travelling D — Google review
There’s something humbling about standing before a landscape shaped by fire, ice, and time. The Gerðuberg cliffs rise like ancient sentinels—perfectly stacked basalt columns etched into the Icelandic earth. Stark, wild, and impossibly beautiful. “There is a rare and reverent beauty in places left wild—where nature speaks in silence, and the earth remembers how to breathe without us.” Short gravel road. Free to visit.
Chris O — Google review
One of the best places I’ve ever seen! It has small hills, but the view was amazing.
Akshay H — Google review
The cliff wall is beautiful this time of year (Sept) with the fall colors popping out. Worth a stop and exploring along the wall.
Danielle M — Google review
Beautiful colonnade of basalt columns. Easy hike to the top for a good view. Lots of cairns on the plateau at the top!
Steve K — Google review
It is a not populated area, they are small compared to other ones you may find, but they are nice for photos as you do not have to fight for a clear space with no people around, you can climb up and a nice panorama will show, which is perfect for a sunny evening There is a church nearby that you can check out, it is closed, but there are many sheep around that you can take photos of

Located in Borgarnes, The Settlement Center is a must-visit museum that provides captivating insights into Icelandic settlement history and the Saga era. Divided into two exhibitions, the Settlement Exhibition covers Iceland's discovery and settlement, while the Egil's Saga Exhibition recounts the remarkable adventures of Egil Skallagrimsson and his family. Visitors can enjoy a detailed multilingual audio guide during their visit.
Very very cool museum. The audio tour is extremely informative and detailed. There are 2 separate sections you go in. The art and interactive machines used were well made and were a great addition to the audio . The stories were very interesting and I found myself wanting to learn more about the sagas
Kyasia J — Google review
Interesting and well-presented exhibits about Iceland’s early settlers and Egill’s saga. The audio guide was helpful and easy to follow. A bit pricey for the size, but still worth a visit if you’re in Borgarnes.
Benz — Google review
We came for the museum and were delighted by the cafe. The museum has an extraordinarily well-designed and thoughtfully crafted series of exhibits on the Settlement period. Auido guide was pefectly integrated with each room and exhibit and wa just right - not too much or too little. The cafe has a large and delicious buffet. Also, excellent coffee and desserts. When we asked about the buffet were were treated to an amazing summary of each dish by one of the staff who was incredibly knowledgable and articulate. She could have made a video of her presentation to entice visitors and they would not be disappointed. If you go nowhere else in town, this is the place to spend time.
James W — Google review
The Settlement Center is where Viking history meets quirky charm. The audio tour is unexpectedly fun, and the wax figures don't blink—promise! Great storytelling, cool exhibits, and a lovely café to top it off. Even Odin would approve.
Don C — Google review
Awesome museum - the best and most detailed explanation of icelandic settlement you can get. They're open until 9pm! And the food is top notch too.
Janina C — Google review
Highly recommend! The self guided audio tour is a great way to learn about early Icelandic settlers, and then top it off with a story about Egils Saga. The gift shop is expansive, and ever though it feels like a tourist trap here, I never felt rushed or crowded. Had the tour all to ourselves. Top this off with a stop in Reykholt to really deep dive into some cool history.
Kurt R — Google review
We stayed on Borgarnes overnight on a couple of days where the weather was unkind. Stuck for something to do we visited The Settlement Center and had a great afternoon there. A great venue, interesting, informative and well presented. Actually would have been worth a detour.
Andrew W — Google review
The Settlement Center was a wonderful stop on our way north from Reykjavik to Akureyri along the Ring Road. We got there shortly after it opened on a weekday which was good because a large bus tour arrived around noon and inundated the place! There are two audio tours, and you should definitely do both, but the absolute highlight is the Egils Saga exhibit. What a wonderful surprise! We were immersed in the story by the most beautiful artwork throughout. It left me feeling a very strong fascination for and connection to this island and its people. Fabulous gift shop too. I’m so glad we came and highly recommend it to everyone.

Borgarnes outdoor Swimming Pool

Borgarnes Outdoor Swimming Pool, also known as Sundlaug Borgarnesi, is a leisure complex offering a quintessentially Icelandic pool experience. The facility features a 25-meter outdoor pool with stunning views of Borgarfjordhur, an indoor pool, several hot pots, steam saunas, a children's pool, and three water slides suitable for all ages.
Great place to have a relaxing day in the hot tubs and steam batch with a bit of fun with the water slides. The entry price is cheap and you get relaxation of what you would get from a fancy expensive thermal batch. Highly recommend for anyone travelling around the region.
Nikhil P — Google review
Great public pool around $12 to get into per person. Bring your own towel. Heated indoor and outdoor pools. 3 hot tubs and a pool slides for the family. Worth it after a long day of hiking.
Daniel Q — Google review
25m pool, 2 hot baths. The third one (and the sauna) weren't open. I was there on a saturday afternoon and were max a dozen in the whole place, so I had a lane all for myself. However the place is run down & not always clean.
Aurélien M — Google review
Great place with both indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, cold plunge and 3 different sized slides. The steam room is also heated from natural geothermal.
Emma P — Google review
Good local pool at reasonable price. 900 per adult and they rent towels if you don't bring any. Make sure you shower well before you head in. They have a couple jacuzzi pools with different temperatures, pretty cool.
Anton — Google review
Great place for small children and adultsas well. Don't forget to follow the local way, i. e. shower without your bathing suit before entering the pools.
Tati V — Google review
A quintessentially Icelandic pool experience. Three large hot tubs of various temperatures, a heated pool with lanes for swimming, three different sized water slides for kids of all sizes and ages, a steam bath, and even a tub of cold water if you like to torture yourself like me. All for around $9 USD as of April 2023. Tourists be aware that you are expected to shower fully nude and thoroughly, and there are no partitions, so expect to be naked around others. This is totally normal for Icelanders and only as awkward as you make it.
Steve N — Google review
A perfect place to relax and chat with Icelandic people. It has one outdoor swimming pool, one indoor pool, and three hot pools with a temperature of around 37 degrees Celsius. And that's only for 1250

Grábrók is a large volcanic crater located in Iceland's Borgarfjordhur district. Visitors can take a trail to the top of the crater, offering stunning views of mossy lava fields and the surrounding landscapes. The area also features other attractions such as Deildartunguhver hot spring, Barnafossar and Hraunfossar waterfalls, and a 300-meter-long man-made ice tunnel.
Sept.24 Our 1st visit to a volcano crater in Iceland. Very sunny, but a strong harsh & cold wind, hats, shawls & gloves were needed. Easy walking stairs up which wind around the crater. Beautiful views at top. You can see all 3 craters. When arrived around 6.30PM not crowded, only a few around, so perfect. Free parking.

For your short getaway... easy to access from the road..easy to climb... enjoy..dont forget to kiss ...Its magical...Im joking..or maybe not...✌️🫡💞😄
San R — Google review
There is a short trail that goes around the crater. This volcano is different from the ones I visited before because it is almost completely covered in moss.
Ana M — Google review
It's a nice place to stretch your legs. We found the former sheep pens interesting. These were the rock walls sectioned off for each farm that owned land nearby where they kept their sheep. This crater is green unlike most of the other craters. Buses do stop here so there will be periods when the trail is crowded. There are no services.
Terri S — Google review
A super convenient and beautiful stop that offers big views for minimal effort. Highly recommend as a break on your West Iceland drive! Bring a coat because it can be very cold and windy!
Connor — Google review
Post-glacial fissure eruption, Ljósufjöll volcanic belt, 3000 years, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, West Iceland!. Cool craters! Climb the stairs, the views are awesome on a clear blue sky kind of day!

A unique place where time stands still. Here you feel peace, beauty, and harmony, as if the world itself slows down.

Visitors can explore the replica longhouse and interact with knowledgeable guides to learn about Iceland's founding people and Viking culture. The surrounding area boasts stunning natural beauty, adding to the immersive experience.
We had a great time here. On our way to a beach up north we stopped when we saw this 💎 gem on the map. Great stories and tour guide. We went around 4pm thinking we were too late but they did an amazing job accommodating us. We were the only ones there which was amazing as well. The viking house was worth it alone. We walked around the property and bought some jewelry ✨️ ☺️ they have bathrooms and are renovating the property. The new owner is doing a great job and we enjoyed every minute we were there. Lots of questions were answered and they explained e eryrhing very well. Thank you so much for the great hospitality. We are so happy we stopped.
Brittany H — Google review
Priceless experience. Rain was an excellent interpreter and the reconstruction of the long house was amazing. A bit out of the way, but totally worth the drive. Recommended highly.
Joe P — Google review
This was a site that I thought I might have to cut for time on the day that we were passing through but I am happy to say we worked it out and the visit was a very pleasant surprise! The turf longhouse is beautifully done and really gives a feel for what life must have been like. There were two docents who provided information and our female docent (Im sorry Ive forgotten her name) was just superb! She gave so much fascinating information about turf houses, about Erik the Red, about viking culture and Icelandic heritage. I learned so much in just a few minutes of hearing her talk. I would have loved to have stayed longer! I was glad to see young people visiting and I hope they gleaned lots of facts to take back to their classrooms. Thank you so much.. well worth the cost of admission. 2800 ISK for adults, 2000 for kids and seniors. Open 10-5p April through October. Clean WC facilities, nice gift shop, and free parking. Easy drive to access...just a few minutes off the main highway. Also beautiful lake views. If in doubt...make the stop! Plan 45-60 minutes if you can.
Ingrid H — Google review
Incredible place with people who genuinely care about the culture they are presenting. Hearing our tour guide talk about the things that were special to her were very powerful, the nature of the norse spirit world and legends that have been passed down for generations...good stuff. Worth a stop. 1-2 hours, or longer if you vibe on a fireside chat in a turf longhouse...
Bradford R — Google review
A very unique stop where you can learn about Erik the Red, and get a glimpse into actual life as a Viking. Who knew they were such babies! The storytelling was very engaging, and the staffs knowledge is unparalleled. The gift shop is cute and thoughtful. A great place to visit.
Kurt R — Google review
Really awesome place! The guide was very friendly and explained a lot! Very informative! I think we were there around 2 hours but I could have stayed 2 hours more! I really recommend this, if you are in Iceland.
Daniel A — Google review
Nice place. Pleasant people. Authentic ambient. Saga of Erik and his father and his son and Norway and Iceland and Grenland, ancient history.
Ljupka D — Google review
If you’re in the area this is well worth a visit. The tour guides are excellent, the house itself is really interesting if you are at all interested in history, and the area gives you a feel for what life was like a long time ago. Bonus points for the nice bathrooms.

Krauma is a geothermal bathing destination located in the Westfjords of Iceland. The area is known for its charming towns that heavily rely on tourism, offering high-quality restaurants such as Stukuhusidh and Tjoruhusidh. Visitors praise Krauma for its clean and well-organized facilities, including different temperature pools, a steam room, and relaxation areas. The dressing rooms are immaculate with free lockers and towel rentals available.
Really nice spa type hot spring cost 150 American dollars for three people but totally worth it. My wife really enjoyed it. I prefer more of a natural type hot spring but this was a nice treat to get away from the rocks and gravel and dirt and have a refined type spa.
Dylan S — Google review
Was a great experience!! I do recommend this geothermal bath, installations are great, very clean with a high standard. We did the reservation at 19:00 hours and was a great idea because all place were practically entirely for us!! Is a great place to relax after a day walking
Erick P — Google review
Amazing and relaxing experience. We spent the afternoon in the pools and enjoyed an early dinner. So good! The staff are very kind and helpful. The place was clean and had everything we needed.
Evangeline W — Google review
RESTAURANT – This was an incredible experience!!!!! I have been to a few really famous restaurants in Reykjavik, but this one? Oh my lord! I can’t even put it into words! I ordered the Lamb Duo (6,990 ISK) – sirloin and braised shank. I didn’t know what to expect, but when it arrived at the table… The smell was unbelievable. I was amazed that I could distinguish each component on the plate, and the taste was just as incredible! Maybe it sounds a bit much, but I can honestly say I have never enjoyed every single bite of a meal as much as I did here! I had no other way to express my gratitude than by personally thanking the chef, which we did. And once again, I would love to say – a big THANK YOU!!!! Takk fyrir matinn ☀️
Nikola K — Google review
Beautiful location! Soaking pools had water of different temperatures. Sauna, steam room and a relaxation room with a wood burning fireplace. So relaxing. Very clean facility and friendly staff. Would recommend.
R P — Google review
Our Glacier tour got canceled and so we "had" to go to Krauma for the whole day. We had an amazing time here. The spa is very relaxed in general and the staff is very friendly. But the main thing that really stood out was the food! We thourouglly enjoyed all of it and especially the desert, if you stop by here don't forget to try the desserts!
Jeremy K — Google review
A geothermal spa located in the area of several hot springs, this one is also situated next to a power station. You can view hot springs right in front of the entrance. Be careful, you can almost touch them and therefore get seriously burned. The Spa itself consists of five warm baths of different temperatures and one ice-cold bath. There is a sauna and an infrared room. There is also a lounge area with an open fireplace where you can take a moment to rest. The price is a standard price within Iceland; I paid 1480 krona. You can also rent a towel, bathrobe, and swimming costume.
C E — Google review
Came to Krauma as we traveled to Husafell on our first day in Iceland. What a fantastic place! The locker rooms were well set up, towel rental was easy, and the overall layout of the facility was easy to manage. We enjoyed all the baths, the steam room, the cold plunge, and the meditation room. The day we went there were maybe 10 people there. It was perfect. The weather was cool and overcast, but really, the outside weather makes no difference as the pools are gloriously warm. Found the meditation room (which is a quiet room) so peaceful and relaxing. Would absolutely recommend. We didn’t try the cafe, but it looked lovely!

Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring, is a must-see natural wonder in the Western Region of Iceland. The dramatic boiling hot springs emit visible steam from a distance and offer a unique opportunity to witness raw geothermal energy. Nearby, the Krauma Spa utilizes water from this spring for a rejuvenating experience.
Geothermal spring with 100c water, steam and sulphur fumes. The boiling water is pumped to several towns in the region for heating. There's a street food and greenhouse place right there plus a restaurant and hot spring spa next to that. Free parking and viewing the geothermal site is free too.

Really nice stop. You've got a 20 meter area where you can see the water bubbling against the rock. There's a greenhouse with food truck where you can pay 2e or eat to use the toilet. Parking is free. This is a quick 10mn stop if you're not going to the baths

Interesting natural hot springs that are also used to provide hot water to the surrounding communities. The location also has a hot spa and restaurant, which we did not visit.
Scott G — Google review
Great place to see the geothermal activity up close and just be in awe at how hot the water is that down far beneath the earths crust and lava layers underneath the water to heat it to escape to the surface.

Neat little spot to see geothermal activity. The food service has tomato soup made from what is grown in a geothermal heated greenhouse.

Drangsnes Hot Tubs are a must-visit attraction located conveniently by the road in town. These hot pots offer a unique experience with picturesque views of the beach and fjord, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Icelandic bathing culture. While there may be some confusion about the cost, it's important to contribute as it helps maintain these gems for everyone's enjoyment. Visitors have shared magical experiences, from encountering the first snow of the season to enjoying a peaceful soak even during rainy days.
We went on a weekday and it was a wonderful experience. Just getting to the place, you can see movie-like, incredible landscapes. The restroom is nearby for changing and for paying for the use of the hot pots (nobody controls it, but payment is expected based on honesty). Once in the water, it’s an amazing experience with a breathtaking view of the sea and the mountains.
Natalia B — Google review
Great pools with a sea view (no good access to the sea though). The only downside are the facilities- changing room, showers, bathroom - small and somewhat dirty, one cannot leave belongings there - Not comparable to other places we visited. Entry fee 1200 isk, can be paid by card.
Alžběta B — Google review
Clean warm tubs (third pool is cold). The two warm tubs were the same temp when we went, probably about 38c. Showers/changing room is across the road so it's a chilly walk and there are only two showers
Cody S — Google review
Wowee! What a beautiful spot! Free parking Right off the side of the road. Only a couple steps down to the tubs. Two hot one cooler tub. 3 tubs in total. Absolutely fantastic- has built in cup holders to take a drink with you. Has change rooms and showers across the street for a small donation. We enjoyed this very much.
Carla — Google review
There are three pools with different temperatures, and a shower and toilet are located just across the street. Although they’re close to the road, it doesn’t affect the experience at all. Plus, the view of the bay is absolutely stunning.
Karolina S — Google review
The best hot pools in Iceland! There are 3 pools with different temperature: rather cold, ideal and very hot). Great ocean view, the whales came really close to the seashore, it was incredible!! The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean, hot water in the shower. They are open 24/7 except for 1 hour on monday for cleaning. It was a perfect evening❤️
Karolina G — Google review
Lovely hot pools. We heard there were whales visible sometimes but we didn't luck out. Changing area available
Joj T — Google review
Simply beautiful hot pots on a great day. The hot pots have 3 different temperatures. There are showers across the road to have before your hot pot. We got lucky with a wonderful day for it. It’s donation based. Well worth it if you are close by and the weather is good.

The Icelandic Seal Center, located in Hvammstangi on the western side of the Vatnsnes Peninsula, is a popular tourist attraction offering insights into Icelandic seals. The small museum provides information about seal history, hunting practices, and conservation efforts. Visitors can engage with passionate staff and researchers who are dedicated to seal conservation. The center also features an informative film in English and a gift shop with themed items. Additionally, there are nearby amenities such as restaurants and grocery stores for convenience.
Very interesting, informative, and fun little museum. We had a wonderful time and really enjoyed our time here. Great for kids, but even adults will have a good time. Lots of great information, wonderful photos and exhibits
Lis H — Google review
Very interesting and fun little museum. Guy at the entrance gives you a map and tells you where to go find the seals And we found them! Sad to read how seals were treated in the past. So glad there are laws protecting them now. Entrance fee contributes to their protection
Shanit R — Google review
What can I say I do love a quirky little local museum. It is interesting to find out about the life of the seal and their behavior before seeing the real ones. This will teach you all related to the seals, and even the relationship between the icelandic people and this animal. Worth it if you love animals and nature, even better if you are thinking about visiting the seal spots around the coast.
Taijei G — Google review
A pretty well put together museum on seals. It’s still pretty small though, which seems to be the norm for Icelandic museums. There was a feature exhibit on walruses which was interesting. Decent gift shop.
Robert E — Google review
We didn't have time to go through the seal center itself, but we loved all the items in the store. Lots of Icelandic products. The gentleman at the counter was most informative about the local area. If he was not the official tourist info guide, he should be!! He provided excellent info about many local sights to check out, all of which turned out to be great! He suggested that whales had been sighted daily in the water right in fro t of the center. We had our lunch at a picnic table and sure enough, we were treated to a minke whale dropping by!! It was an excellent stop and a wonderful man promoting Iceland!! Sorry I did not note his name. Thank you so much!!

The center is very basic but still I rated it heavily. This is primarily because 1) the staff there was super helpful, 2) the bathrooms were clean and 3) there is an excellent supermarket nearby
Nitka M — Google review
Would skip going into the Seal center - the displays are dated and the only seals you’ll see are either in videos or stuffed. The gentleman at front desk was helpful. We saw several in the wild on Diamond beach.

It is a small museum which teaches you about seals. It's small, but it has a lot of information and a video (which could be renewed). Parking is free. They also give you the information where you can see seals, especially during low tide. Toilets are also on site.

The Cave Vidgelmir

The Cave Vidgelmir is the largest lava tube in Iceland, located on private property near the farmstead Fljotstunga. It offers underground tours showcasing unique colors and formations, with a stable walkway for easy exploration. The cave is well-lit but visitors are provided with helmets and torches for an immersive experience. Despite being protected, it still offers a fascinating glimpse into Iceland's geological wonders. Knowledgeable guides lead small groups through the 1.
We enjoyed this lava tunnel tour very much! Gareth was our guide. He was very knowledgeable about the geology and history of the area. He had a great sense of humor that made time fly by. He practiced his dad jokes, answered all of our questions, and even attempted to help us English-speaking tourists understand Icelandic pronunciation. I'd definitely recommend detouring through the beautiful countryside to this experience.
Sandra K — Google review
The cave is special and beautiful, impressive, one of a kind. We booked the 6pm tour. We were 6 ppl group so it felt like a private tour with time for questions and photos. The cave is VERY cold - 2 degrees (C). Rated 4 because it was a little pricey in my opinion compared to other attractions/tours in Iceland.
Shani L — Google review
Great tour and our guide was full of knowledgeable lava information and fun stories with humor and a beautiful singing voice to top it off. If you come to Iceland it’s a good tour to enjoy on any day. Dress warm as it gets really cold 🥶 down there.
J ( — Google review
Amazing lava cave with parking and a bar nearby. The tour with Dominica was the highlight, she is both very funny and highly educational. The cave looks incredible and the experience is unforgettable. Just make sure to bring warm clothes since it gets quite chilly inside.
Martin S — Google review
Seeing the cave and learning the history was fun. Checking in was easy. Free parking available. The tour lasted a little longer and wasn't rushed which was nice. Most of the tour is on the raised boardwalk. The walk inside is not very long. We would walk a bit than stop for a while and our guide would talk and explain things. I did feel like there was more talking on this tour than I would have wanted - I'd rather see and just experience more. There's a spot for nice photo opp at the end. Inside first section of the cave temp various based on outside, deeper in the cave they said is usually 2°C.
Toni S — Google review
Our tour was host by Sarah, lovely lady who makes a lot of jokes and offers amazing knowledge about the lava cave. Wonderful tour to visit but please bring enough clothing as the cave is rather cold once you got in, the pitch dark experience is epic!
Frankie L — Google review
The road 523 is kind of bumpy, it's easier to get there by 518. At the building you have toilets, and some place to drink hot tea/coffee. The tours will take you about 90 minutes. The cave is not beautifully decorated but it's totally different to everything I have seen previously. The guide Sampo was very informative and funny, so 90 minutes flew very fast:) It's cold inside, so take some warm clothes even if the weather outside is sunny.
Alexandra D — Google review
Excellent tour. You’ll learn plenty of fascinating facts about the cave and the history of Iceland. Our guide, Dominika, was highly knowledgeable as well as very funny. Highly recommended.

Surtshellir

Caverns & Caves
The result of a volcanic eruption, this long lava cave has ice stalagmites & archaeological remains.
My girlfriend and I initially planned to visit Cave Vidgelmir, but due to time and budget constraints, we decided to leave. A helpful worker suggested this place, and fortunately, we had a 4x4 vehicle that allowed us to access this stunning, remote location. The views were absolutely breathtaking, though the lack of safety barriers meant we had to tread carefully. 2023/8/30

Visited 16th July 2025. We entered through entrance 1 and continued for a couple hundred meters to reach complete darkness, then returned. If you want a nice experience of going through the tunnel, make sure to have very sturdy shoes (not just soft sneakers), proper headtorches (no, iPhone light is not enough), warm and sturdy clothing (it’s cold down there and anything gets ripped easily). Caving helmet would be ideal but a woolly hat is better than nothing (if you bump your head against the rocks. For me good gloves were essential as you need to grab the rocks to climb over them and they are super sharp. It’s a mega cool experience, we were completely alone, the darkness is magnificent and who can say they climbed through Iceland’s longest lava tunnel eh? In other places on Iceland, you pay a lot of money for the guided tour but this is genuine hiking/climbing, and not elevated walkways with full lighting.
Daniela M — Google review
One of the most unique experiences on our trip. We came across this place on the map and decided to explore. About a 15 minutes drive on a gravel road with a 2WD suv got us to the parking spot quite easily. We entered through the first cave and after some hesitation decided to keep going into the darkness. It is pitch black inside so if you have flashlights of head lamps it would be super helpful. We went in with our phone flashlights. The cave an be quite tricky to traverse and we did it slowly with our 4 and 7 year old kids. You can’t get out in holes 2 and 3 and the next exit from the cave is in opening 4 (or 5 and 6). Quick walk back to the car from there. Super fun and free experience!
Uri F — Google review
Interesting lava cave and lava fields. We chose to come on a whim and it was worth the drive. The road says you need a 4x4 vehicle, we managed fine today in dry conditions without one.
Danielle M — Google review
Pretty cool lava tube, fun to explore. Easily accessible in a rental 4x4 or if driving slowly in a FWD vehicle. Surtshellir is cold and dark inside, and it's windy outside. Dress appropriately (gloves would be nice), and watch your step - the rocks are loose, and slippery. Visited July 2024
Brian L — Google review
Great lava caves to explore. Sturdy boots with good grip and headtorch are essential. There are parts of the cave where no daylight reaches. It's possible to enter or exit the caves at holes number 1, 4, or 6 only. The caves are quite large, so you can stand up throughout the cave system. Some of the rocks inside are quite loose, so caution is advised. The carpark is right beside hole number 1. There is a pathway marked out above ground, so after going through the caves we took the overground path back. When we went, Google maps was confused between carparks 1 and 2 when we went, we took the road signposted on the road, and it brought us to the carpark at hole 1. The second carpark is just a short walk from holes 4 or 6. We went in mid September & roads were easily passable.
Elaine D — Google review
Cold dark tunnels#4 is easiest to find - ice a on the bottoms of the caves - bring head torch
Toby K — Google review
Once in a lifetime experience!! We went through the caves from the forth one to the first one - it was nice to finish right next to the parking lot. 🙂 It would have been nice to have a headlight, but we were able to do this even with our phone lights. Very thrilling experience, I recommend it to everyone who likes adventure!

Hvitserkur is a stunning 15-meter-tall basalt island located on the east coast of the Vatnsnes Peninsula in Iceland. It can be seen from a black-sand beach and resembles either a dragon or a rhino, depending on your perspective. Legend has it that Hvitserkur was once a troll caught by the sunrise while trying to destroy a nearby monastery.
Absolutely stunning. The road to get there is gravel, but not too bad. There is a viewing platform from above, but it’s worth hiking down and viewing from below.
Jason D — Google review
Big awesome rock with fun history. It’s a really long drive on gravel/dirt road (that has lovely scenery horse and several single lane bridges). Parking area is smallish. I bus took up almost 1/3 of parking. No services. Very windy bluff. We enjoyed the view and took the official path to the beach. Rocky seaweed covered beach. The rock is on a sandy spit with lots of birds. When the tide is out you can walk right up to it. Since it was not much more to do or see, we ate lunch in our camper van before heading out to our next stop. We read other reviews and decided our relaxed paced allowed for this detour. If you are on a tight schedule, maybe skip this one in favor of more dramatic and popular spots.
Marie R — Google review
Beautiful walk formation in the water. Gravel steep road to get there. It was getting dark when we got there so didn't go down to the water, only saw it from above. Give yourself lots of time to drive around the peninsula to get there as road is narrow and a dirt road most of the time. Short walking paths to the left to see from above. If low tide can walk to the right of the parking lot down to the beach to it.
Kris M — Google review
This wasn’t originally on our itinerary but was one of our top 3 Icelandic locations. We did the whole Ring Road on our 10 day trip. The road to get to it was a little rough but we saw cars down in the parking lot. As of 10/2025, no fee for parking. No facilities/WCs at the location. But there was a hotel/ restaurant about a 10 min drive away. We happened to time it precisely with the perfect low tide. First pic is from top viewing platform. We then crossed the parking lot to the proper/safer path to the beach. It was a little longer than expected but such a pleasant walk. When we got to the rock outcropping, we were the only people on the beach. It was perfect for pics. People in the viewing area, then started to scramble down the cliff- do not recommend. Right next to the viewing area is a sign pointing to where the beach access is. The last pic was the view during our lunch in our campervan from the parking lot. We saw fins out in the water too (maybe dolphins).
Dinisha B — Google review
We arrived just in time for sunset. The view is amazing. We went down to see the beach but spotted seals 🦭 they were super playful
Thai “ — Google review
This is a super cool spot — the rock formation really does look like a rhino! But there's much more to see than just the rock itself. In the area, we spotted seals, seagulls with chicks, and ducks with ducklings. 30-minute dirt road drive each way is well worth it! There is a bathroom before you go into the parking lot. We visited in early July around 3 pm, and the tide was low, exposing a large stretch of beach, so we were able to take a long walk along the beach. To get down to the beach, make sure you take the trail on the right side of the parking lot (see the first couple of photos). It’s a longer walk but much smoother and easier to go down, and that's how you see the seals. There’s also a very steep path near the viewpoint on the left side of the parking lot — better suited for the way back up if you’re feeling adventurous. When we got down to the beach, we saw seals lounging on the beach across the water, and a few swam over to our side, popping their heads out of the water to check us out — a really cool experience! As you approach the rock, you can clearly see seagulls nesting on it, with plenty of chicks around.
Wenzhu S — Google review
Interesting place to visit but this requires a lot of efforts to drive on the uneven and close to off road conditions. The rock is very special compared with many other because it looks like formed by Lava? The shape of the rock is bit funny … anyway if you go North in Iceland that can’t be missed!
Wilbur L — Google review
Impeccable beauty I highly recommend coming at low tide so you have the ability to walk around and explore freely. Be careful, especially during icy months as it can be a little risky would not recommend people or not experience hikers however, the view from the lookout point is easy and manageable about anyone in the walkway over his short flat and offers cell review

Kolugljúfur Canyon, also known as Kolugljúfur Gorge, is a hidden gem in Iceland that offers an impressive gorge and the beautiful Kolufossar waterfall. Located a short distance off the Ring Road, it provides free parking on both sides and easy access for exploration. Visitors can enjoy various viewpoints of the canyon and its powerful waterfall, with a bridge offering an amazing view of its depth.
Good little stop that is lesser known and which has a short hike to a waterfall and beautiful canyon. There is very little elevation gain, but there is no loop trail, so you have to go to the end of one side, and come back, and repeat for the other side. The best views are off the bridge and to the areas immediately down to the left and right.
Henry S — Google review
The waterfall and short walks along the banks of the ravine would be stunning in the right light (mid day) and weather conditions. Today was not that day with 30+ mph winds. Good amount of parking and areas to explore.
Danielle M — Google review
Amazing canyon waterfall hidden in the ring road. Is a little outside of the main route 1, in a gravel road but so worth the little detour, is so pretty. You can go down to the the waterfall and enjoy. The parking is ok (maybe a little difficult for small vehicles, especially if it rains). No restrooms facilities on the place.
Rosi G — Google review
Definitely worth a slight detour off the ring road if you have 4x4 vehicle. Road is part gravel but smooth. Free carpark right at the canyon. Can see the waterfall immediately on both sides of the bridge. Across the bridge are some short walking paths that allow you to get closer among the rocks.
Kris M — Google review
🌟 Kolugljúfur Canyon 🌟 One of the most beautiful and easily accessible canyons in Iceland. The views of the canyon along with its waterfalls are absolutely stunning and worth the visit. The access road leading to the canyon is not very well paved, so be prepared for a slightly bumpy ride. The site has specific visiting hours, so it’s better to plan your visit accordingly. There’s no parking fee, so you can freely enjoy the breathtaking scenery without any hassle. A great stop for nature lovers and photographers!
Soma S — Google review
Cool area with fantastically exciting areas to walk in and around. Potentially dangerous because there are no guardrails in several places. Hold your child's hand. But so cool and worth the stop along the way. Incredibly beautiful! Free parking.
Marika W — Google review
Kolugljufur was one of the most amazing canyons we have visited. It was truly spectacular and not off from Route 1 so everyone should add this to the itinerary. Road here is partly on gravel but no need to a 4x4, just drive slowly and you'll be fine! The way mother nature sculpted this canyon throughput thousand of years is truly magnificent and makes this worthwhile of a 1 hour visit. Walk alongside the canyon as much as you can for further views and if you dare, step on the middle 'boulder' to immerse yourself in the middle of it all.

The best stop on our trip. Love, love, love this place! Some dummies taking chances on edge of soft cliffs--not worth it people! Bring sturdy footwear as there's mud, soft ground, stepping up and down to get closer if you want.

My daughter had a wonderful riding experience here yesterday. An hour across the fields and along the river at the foot of the highlands. Her guide was super friendly and told us all about the farm, the animals, the horses. The location is a bit remote, we stopped on our way through - that’s the only reason it’s not 5 stars.

Very uncomplicated and friendly horse rental. We took a 1.5h "private" tour at our desired time (only tourguide Karen, my boyfriend and I). Karen was very friendly. She even took some pictures of us while riding with her phone and sent them to us later. They also picked good horses for us beginners so that we felt comfortable all the time. Would recommend this place highly.

Called the same day we wanted to ride. They had a tour 45 min. later which they booked for us. We never tried horseback riding before But the guide Helen quickly teached us how to handle the horses. Very nice Tour. Cared for safety too, and afsked us to step down from the horses when someone was shooting not too far from our track - which was very unusual. 5 Stars and highly recommendable. Remember to bring hot clothing, gloves and a hat. And if you don’t have any, you can borrow for free :-)

worth the detour! The road is not difficult but keep an eye out for rogue sheep. It’s very reasonable, 2000isk per person. You pay in the main cabin/Cafe. The owner was awesome, very friendly and helpful! There is a small cabin with toilets. A with men’s and women’s changing room and showers. The smaller pool is cooler about 38 but has a really nice view. The bigger pool was around 40-42. There is also a larger hut with a kitchen but we didn’t use it.

Amazing spot, access is through a dirt road away from everything. Pools are amazing, good facilities and very attentive and helpful staff. The best campsite we’ve been in on our week-long travel through Iceland. Worth the effort!

We had a great time at these thermal pool’s. The natural setting is incredible. We were the only people at the pools for an hour.
Bill L — Google review
Lovely place, the view to sea from pools is obscured though by stone walls. Access to the see is not easy. Facilities are basic, but very ok. The pools were extremely slippery due to algae… how they keep the hygiene level is a question.
Alžběta B — Google review
Such a nice experience! We found this place by chance. The owner was really kind and even gave us a discount due to the weather condition. We were lucky and had the pools to ourselfs. Highlight were two little brown foxes, which sometimes showed up between the rocks. The two pools were 36-38 degrees warm. The view to the mountainside was awesome!

Perfect camping spot! Best experience of our whole Iceland trip. Imagine sleeping next to the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean and taking a soothing nighttime soak in an real Viking pool with snowy mountains in the backdrop! Afterwards you can eat a slice of warm apple pie with the warmly welcome owner!

Best hot spring I’ve been so far in Iceland. We happened to stumble across it and it was the best thing that could’ve happened to us. Specialty Museums
Glaumbær Farm & Museum is an 18th-century turf-farm museum in northern Iceland, offering a fascinating glimpse into traditional Icelandic living. The complex consists of small interconnected buildings with period furniture and utensils, providing insight into the cramped living conditions of the era. Visitors can explore the unique construction style made of dirt, stone, and peat while gaining a sense of life in northern Iceland not long ago.
Definitely worth the time to visit. The history is so interesting and the way they built this place was just crazy to see how they lived back in the late 1800s here. Fun place to visit
Michael C — Google review
Amazing, moving and educational place. It's the ultimate immersive experience as visitors walk through room after room in the complex. Can almost hear and feel what it's like to be living in that time.

Great place with lots of explanations of what the pieces mean. There’s a lot of original items and great staging of the rooms. Totally worth the price of admission and it’s a nice stop on the ring road
Melissa S — Google review
Really enjoyed visiting Glaumbær Turf Farm & Museum! From the outside the turf houses look quite small and simple, but once you step inside you realize it’s like a maze of connected rooms showing how families lived here in the past. It feels very authentic and gives you a real sense of history. One of the coolest surprises is that in one of the rooms there’s an old wardrobe, and hidden inside it are stairs leading up to a secret space upstairs. It feels a bit like stepping into Narnia, but in real life! Discovering details like this makes the visit really fun. The whole site is beautifully kept and the surrounding views are stunning as well. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re exploring the north of Iceland. Take your time here – there’s more to see inside than you might expect from the outside.
Damian K — Google review
Historic turf farm and open air museum offering a glimpse into Iceland’s rural past in North West Iceland. You pay to go into this well maintained museum of turf houses. There’s a gift shop with local souvenirs. It takes about 30 minutes to look at each house. Information is displayed inside each to know what you’re looking at. Of particular interest are the bedrooms with 2 each in little twin beds, for body heat used in winter. Turf allows good insulation by itself as there was no heating. Painted porcelain bowls were used. The assortment of kitchen utensils is impressive.
Ria I — Google review
That's a must go to place, if you're really into Icelandic history. Quite interesting as you get to enter some real and well preserved turf dwellings. There are rooms for everything, from food storage, to repair shops, knitting places, baby rooms, animal housing, you name it. A whole life organized into these well-isolated houses where people lived in the ages where no wood or hard stone was available in this land of fire and ice.
Ognian V — Google review
Cute little place. Worth a visit. Staff also very friendly and dressed in what is considered to be ‚traditional folklore‘ I guess. One can discover rural life 200-300 years ago.

Nice little pit stop. Church was closed. On a Sunday. The irony. You can peer in through the windows or just admire the grass construction. Free too, a rarity in Iceland, land of exorbitant parking fees and need a mortgage for a meal.

very nice place with a nice pool in the middle of the houses. shame about the water that smells very strongly of sulfur, for this I recommend bringing a lot of natural water. for the rest the house is very welcoming but it has stairs to go upstairs that are very narrow and dangerous.

I cant express enough how much I enjoyed my riding holiday with Hestasport. All the guides and staff were marvellous. Nothing was ever too much trouble and they were always smiling. The cottages were fantastic as was the food. The horses were clearly well looked after and they were sure footed and responsive over all terrains and through the streams. The last day we were taught the flying pace. How exhilarating!!

This was incredible. The view was amazing. The pool water itself was quite warm and felt wonderful to swim a few laps after being cooped up in a car for many days. There is a hot tub which felt nice as well. The changing room was clean and very simple. There is a small locker you can use for things like your wallet, phone, or passport. Otherwise, you're given a hook, a basket, and a bench for your belongings. The showers aren't very warm, but I didn't find that to be a problem. This was my first Icelandic public pool experience and I keep thinking, why didn't I try one sooner?! It's lovely, less crowded, and costs less money than the big geothermal pools. Will definitely come back here. (also, be sure to take the path down to see the basalt columns. It's beautiful!)

It's actually a public bath, changing is quick and nicely maintained, the place is small but once you get outside - MY GOD the views are just spectacular with the fjord below, whales(!) playing in the sea, snow-covered mountains in the far and just one, large hot-pool (38dgr cel). It is picture perfect for a nature experience, so bring you phone!

Super cool pool overlooking the water. It’s a good temperature to swim in, and there is a hot tub to go warm up. This pool isn’t very touristy which was awesome. Great view and can make for some sweet photos

This is a famous pool in Iceland, as it was donated to this quaint town. The hours are longer in the summer, 9-21, I believe. The pool Is well-maintained, clean and with one of the best views of any public pool in Iceland! Not to be missed is the short hike down to the basalt columns below. This breathtaking area is rumored to be the elf capitol of the region. Enjoy the beauty and positive energy, while respecting the wildlife and the elves. (While you are in town, there is a museum, as well as a small grocery store. The store is known for its reasonable prices.)

Church itself was locked, but you could go up the stairs in the steeple. Also, speaking of while, I hadn't seen a church with a dethatched steeple before! Very cool!

(Translated by Google) It is a place full of charm, cozy and framed in a wonderful environment. It is steeped in history, with a long university tradition, although the building that attracts the most attention is its cathedral. It is worth visiting if you are nearby and even more so in winter, when the place is covered in a blanket of snow. Arctic Sea Tours, located near Akureyri in North Iceland, offers a range of exciting tours including Arctic whale watching, Grimsey Arctic Island and Arctic Sea Angling. Visitors have had fantastic experiences on the well-maintained boat, spotting humpback whales and dolphins in the overcast skies. The friendly and professional owner and staff go above and beyond to ensure a memorable trip, even upgrading to a faster boat for better viewing opportunities.
We were visiting in early April 2025. Seeing whales in April is 50/50, eather you see bunch or none. We had luck that we saw minke whale just before the end of the tour so we even extended our tour. We also saw some porpoises. We had a great time with them.
Jakob K — Google review
Took express whale watching at 1pm. It's totally worth it. I would highly recommend eventhough its a expensive than classic tours. You have flexibility going to whales quickly. Guide made sure that he spent some time more to ensure that we see whales. We got lucky and saw one whale besides our boat. And also we saw very near by two whales ( humpback) GO FOR IT YOU WILL NOT REGRET.

Did premium whale watching wirh Arctic Sea in Dalvik. Speed boat is fast so dont forget gloves, hat and glasses. Seen 3-4 whales. Trip took longer than 2h. If booking in the office or over the phone ask for discount ;) speed boat trip is 2x expensive but will get you closer to the whales
Gabriel D — Google review
It was a breathtaking experience. We had a very nice guard who told us many interesting facts about the whales and he had an exact idea from where the whales were at the day. Furthermore we had a very talented captain who led the boat skillful to the whales without scaring them. We saw so many whales and were able to take lots of photos and videos. Some of the animals were really close. At the end we even got hot chocolate and cinnamon buns. It worth a the price!!!
Anna N — Google review
Great experience. The staff was friendly and nice. We were offered proper outfit, check in was easy. The tour itself was simply amazing, suggestive and wonderful. We were able to see a lot of wales, even if we took the big boat we were able to see them very closed by. The facility has bathrooms and it's warm. Incredibile experience.
Federica L — Google review
We had the classic tour, which was great (warm overalls and hot chocolate and cinnamon bun included). It lasted 3 hours, during which we went inside the fjord and had the chance to watch some 4-5 humpback whales. The guide also mentioned a minke whale, but I couldn't spot that sneaky one. Kudos to the captain, who patiently maneuvered the boat so that we could have a good with atvtbe gentle giants of the see.

Great Experience. Hosts are very fluent in English and take the Time to Hunt for good pictures. You will get weather-resistable Overalls as well as free hot chocolate and cinnamon Rolls on Board 😋

Exciting Whale Watching…..Nice facility to get gear on before boat ride. Restrooms available. Boat was top notch. Not your average “rubber boat.” I believe they said it weighed 15 tons. We got an arctic speed boat ride in a beautiful bay. Lots of whale sightings on our tour as well. Captain got us close and personal. One whale actually went right under our boat. We could have almost touched him.

Whale Watching Hauganes offers an unforgettable experience, despite the cold weather. Visitors are provided with warm flotation suits and can enjoy complimentary hot drinks and pastries on board. The knowledgeable guides ensure a safe and informative tour, with the chance to see multiple whales up close. The cozy oak boat provides a personal touch to the excursion, offering stunning views of the mountains and fjord.
We were not going to go whale watching — our experience in other countries has been too many boats, few or no whales. But we met someone who said this was the highlight of her trip…so we booked tickets last minute (night before), resigned to just enjoy the classic Icelandic boats and majestic views. This exceeded our wildest expectations! Weather was perfect (blue skies and light breeze), views were stunning (snow capped mountains, green fields), boat was iconic (all wood, quiet, small), no other boats around…and so many, many whales. We were only 15 minutes from shore when the crew started spotting whales (humpback, minke) and it was non-stop. At one point, one humpback hung out next to the boat for 15 minutes - it was magical. Thank you to the operators and crew for an unforgettable experience.
Monica M — Google review
Encountered this amazing tour through an NCL cruise booking (late May 2025). The crew was energetic, the boat was just the right size for our 2doz-ish group. Sailed out to a spot where at least 3 humpback whales were out swimming & we have tons of great memories as a result. No full breeching/jumping but plenty of sights as they kept coming up to breathe. Super serene setting. They offered hot chocolate + homemade cinnamon biscuits (cookies) that were quite good as well. Overall a highly recommended stop during your next Icelandic adventure! And the shop attendant was incredibly kind, thank you for the experience of a lifetime!
Kate S — Google review
Great experience. The staff and the captain were truly kind. We were lucky enough to see a whale. On the boat, they also offered coffee, hot chocolate, and some snacks. Highly recommended.

What an amazing experience! We saw 7 different whales and they were showing off continuously for 2.5h! We definitely recommend this company. We enjoyed our ride with Johann and Gardar. Johann is also a great singer, so I hope he shows off his skills as well.

I was supposed to go Whale watching in Husavik, but due to bad weather and high waves booking got cancelled and they reccomended me this agency. It was about 90 minutes drive from Husavik. As soon as we arrived we got waterproof suits and equipment to keep as dry and warm. Reccomendation is to layer up in the fall season under the suits, the more you have the better. During the 2 hours of boat ride we've seen bunch of whales. At the first half an hour you basically just go to the location they know it should have some whales. After that when the guides spot the whale, captain navigates to the location and you have short time of seeing them on the surface before they dive. We've seen some with tails out and some of the lazy ones without the tails. One even approached the ship super close. As waves were rough we got splashed by the water multiple times, but suits really worked and we were all dry underneath. Wind was really strong as well so reccomend to bring the gloves of your own. At the way back crew offer us hot drinks (coffe and hot cocholate) along with some homa made cookies, and the guide sang us sea shanty, which was really nice touch. All in all grate experience which was really improved by the great crew and guides. Definately worth the money
Kenan P — Google review
The perfect trip. We saw several whales. We were given warm and buoyant clothing. There were cookies, hot coffee, and hot chocolate. My boyfriend is a fan of boats and all kinds of machines, and he had lots of questions about them – the captain and the guide answered all of them, were very open, and gave us even more information than we expected. We highly recommend it!
Ola P — Google review
There were lots of whales unfortunately unless you are at the front of the boat and very pushy (we had a bunch of people from southern Europe that just had to be at the front if the boat and literally shoved everyone else out of the way) you won't see anything. As my short friend pointed out there was no such thing as viewing from either side of the boat, the caption always pointed the boat so the whales were at the very front. my best shot below. And they vaped stuff that stunk. Found out afterwards that isn't allowed, but the upper deck staff conveniently never noticed.

Located in Akureyri, the Akureyri Botanical Garden is a 3.6-hectare park established in 1912 by Margrethe Schioth. It features a diverse collection of plants from Iceland, South America, and Africa, including subtropical species that thrive despite the region's low average temperature. The garden offers a peaceful atmosphere with views of the fjord and an impressive variety of flora.
Free admission to this garden, which was awesome! It’s was great checking out all types of plants here that some of them I had never seen before. The place itself was pretty big too, offering a cafe, 2 greenhouses, a statue of the original owner of the place, and a fountain. Some of the flowers pictured below were some of my favorites, since they looked gorgeous! Highly recommend stopping by, especially since admission is free!
Nikolai M — Google review
The garden is small but lovely, an unexpected gem just above the town. You can walk here, but it’s all uphill from the town or cruise port, so jump on the free public bus which does the rounds every 25 minutes or so, see the gardens, then walk back down past the church. As a bonus the garden has a lovely cafe in an architecturally designed building which does decent coffee and cakes.
Stephen S — Google review
The gardens, for this time of year, were still beautiful. I would love to come back someday to see it during peek times. We walked through in about an hour. There is a shop that had coffee and some bakery items. We didn't eat there because we had just finished eating sandwiches. If you enjoy flowers, and are curious about the names of some of the plants you have seen along your journey, take a stroll. You won't be disappointed!

This is a must do if you are in town and it’s the summer months. The range of flowers were just amazing. I saw flora I have never seen before in my entire life. The grounds were great and really well maintained. The cafe at the garden was beautiful and quaint. It was a hike uphill to get here from the cruise port so we opted to take a taxi, which was very easy to do from the port and to return to the port. Just get the cab’s business card so you can contact them when you’re done (WhatsApp is usually best). My husband and I were with my three year old and they both enjoyed the gardens. I’m so glad we decided to come here. It was a highlight of the trip!

My visit to Akureyri Botanical Garden in late June was perfectly timed as flowers were just starting to unfurl their beauty. It’s an incredibly peaceful place, ideal for an hour of quiet exploration among the varied plant species. I found myself constantly discovering new favorites around every bend. The presence of an interesting cafe right inside adds a unique touch, perfect for a refreshing break. This garden provides a serene escape, offering both natural beauty and a relaxing environment. A truly delightful and calming experience!

Nestled on a hill in Akureyri, Iceland, the magnificent Akureyrarkirkja is a Lutheran church that captivates visitors with its stunning architecture and serene ambiance. Designed by Gudhjon Samuelsson, this modernist gem features an impressive white facade adorned with numerous stained-glass windows and a grand pipe organ inside.
Lutheran church I read they only close it for celebrations and funerals and I wondered when this would happen. Well we went today and there was a funeral going on. We saw the family and understood for whom was the ceremony for and it was very sad. The climb up builds heat specially when it's cold

Worth a visit. Beautiful modern church that overlooks the town and the water. Some interesting stained glass and an amazing organ. Was designed by the same architect from Hallgrímskirkja in Reykavik.

We have visited Akureyri twice now, and an iconic sight visible from all along the waterfront is the Akureyri new modern church. We were unable to get to it to enter either visit, but enjoyed the architecture from the outside. I believe the two front spires are mostly decorative, but this makes it reminiscent of a European medieval catholic cathedral in style..
Graham T — Google review
Beautiful church. Honestly, this was one of my favorite spots while visiting Akureyri. Each stained glass window alternated pictorial depictions of the gospel and of Icelandic Christian history and heritage. It was moving and awe inspiring. It was such a beautiful display of local and national culture, and intricately displayed the intrinsic connection between Iceland’s national heritage with Christianity

Laufás Museum and heritage site showcases early Icelandic life with grass-roofed houses and a 19th century church. The museum is designed like an extended home, featuring period furnishings and informational plaques that detail living conditions and customs. A knowledgeable docent is available to answer any questions visitors may have. The church is a must-see, complete with a beautiful choir loft. Additionally, the gift shop offers handmade local items for those seeking authentic souvenirs.
It was temporarily closed, yet we were able to look around, visit church, and also use the toilet - which was open, clean, and warm. The old agricultural machine exposition was outside. Houses were locked, but we were able to look inside through the windows.

Nice place to see life as it was in old Iceland. Pleasant short stop on your way to or from the falls. WATCH YOUR HEAD in the house. Low ceilings.....

Laufás Museum and heritage site with its turf houses is a unique and interesting place to visit. From the outside the houses appear to be individual and small. However, most are interconnected inside and have multiple rooms and even an upstairs! You can climb up into the loft of the church. I say climb as the steps are very shallow in depth. We recommend visiting. We were on a tour through our cruise line. We did not feel rushed at this stop.

A highlight of our two days in Akuyeri! Firstly, the drive here was stunning, right on the coastline with breathtaking views. The museum and heritage site was beautifully maintained and so so informative. Going through the maze of the house was mind-blowing, each room was a new discovery full of artifacts and nonstop history. We enjoyed it greatly and highly recommend. On the way back to Akuyeri we stopped on the side of the road to visit some Icelandic horses. Beautiful scenery.

Great place and impressive collection! One thing I would add is English descriptions to the cars, only some has them. Also the coffee was very good :)

The owner is one of the nicest people I have ever met! I was visiting from the states and made the drive from Reykjavik to visit this place. They have an amazing car collection with one of 3 Dixie Flyers left in existence and one of two DMC DeLoreans in Iceland. Highlight of the visit was hearing from the owner about the restoration process for their vehicles and all the stories behind the cars. Was the highlight of my entire trip to Iceland.

Must stop! This was an amazing collection, beautifully kept and many unusual items. One was a Dixie Flyer - one of 3 in the world- tractors and a Tucker snow cat. There is a little play area for kiddos and a spotless WC. The owner is welcoming & we could have stayed all day!

Fantastic place!!! Being a car engineer I was impressed but I believe it is very interesting for everyone who likes cars, vehicles a bit. It is a private collection with 2 big rooms of completely restored old or oldish cars and machines and there are at least 50 of others outside waiting for some workshop hours in order to get back in shape. Absolutely recommended place!!!

My grandma used to have some of them at home :) The owner was very nice and friendly. I loved the red mustang and also original Jukebox, where you can play a song!

Goðafoss Waterfall, also known as "The Falls of the Gods," is a stunning natural wonder located in Iceland. It cascades over a curved, 12-meter-high precipice and offers multiple viewpoints accessible via paths. Despite being smaller and less powerful than some of Iceland's other waterfalls, it is renowned for its breathtaking beauty. Visitors can access two car parks near the waterfall, with one situated on the Ring Road and another located beside a petrol station.
The waterfall is gorgeous! We visited the waterfall from both the west or the east side. On the east side, there is a path leading to the river bank and you can enjoy the views there.

We enjoyed our stop at this waterfalls, even though it was a cloudy rainy day. It felt much less commercialized than the waterfalls on the south of the island. There is plenty of free parking, and the walking paths give you great views of the fall. Right along the Ring Road, so a easy stop while driving through the north of Iceland. Definitely worth spending a few minutes here.

Amazing beautiful waterfall on the ring road close to Akureyri. The trail is well mark, you can go down close the waterfall also if you have the skills. The parking is very convenient and close, it has two, one on each side. You can see the waterfall front different angles. Also it has a suoveniers store with bathrooms and nice coffee so you can get nice presents there and the staff is very friendly.
Rosi G — Google review
Beautiful waterfall with amazing view points all around. There are plenty of spots to sit and enjoy the views. There are steps to go down near the base of the fall. Godafoss looks a bit like Niagara Falls in a smaller scale but it’s far less crowded and commercialized which makes it more pleasant and enjoyable. We enjoyed our stay there and highly recommend it for anyone visiting nearby.
Arif I — Google review
Stunning waterfall. Very accessible. Car parks on the east and west side for free. Toilets cost 200 krona in the cafe. Even a little hotel next to it. The paths and viewpoints are very accessible even in flip flops but you'd need trainers probably to go down to the beach bit where the best view is. Little bit rocky down there. There's even some picnic benches up top for relaxing

Free parking for a magnificent waterfall. Park on the west side (for the best views) and then there is a short walk from the parking area. There are viewing platforms and there’s a staircase to get closer to the waterfall. A souvenir shop and a paid WC (200kr) is located near the west parking lot.

Nestled in the charming town of Húsavík, the Húsavík Whale Museum stands as a unique tribute to the majestic giants of the sea. This remarkable museum is dedicated entirely to whales and their habitats, showcasing an impressive array of exhibits that delve into whale ecology, conservation efforts, and Iceland's whaling history. One of its most captivating features is a massive blue whale skeleton, dramatically displayed upside down with its rib bones reaching skyward—a sight that truly takes your breath away.
I am not the museum kind but this museum was worth a visit. It can be categorized into three broad sections- 1. On whales, their anatomy, types and social behavior; 2. Climate change and as it relates to Arctic area and whales; 3. Whale’s role in human life as food and other uses of whale’s body after it dies. Overall very balanced information and incredibly useful. I found several facts that kept me engaged despite the number of exhibits that can feel a bit dry. Children enter free and if you do whale watching with north sailing, we got some additional discounts. I strongly recommend a visit here.
Ram R — Google review
Quite nice but not big museum with many scheletons of whales and some interesting notices to read, a nice film but unfortunately it plays just every hour and last show is at 4pm...it can be a bit more interactive specially for children but it is a good experience indeed.

Katerina O — Google review
Cool to see skeletons of a handful of whales but not very contemporary and overall kind of boring. 30 minute stop. No elevator and not handicap accessible to get to the second floor as a result. Better things to do or see the one in Reykjavik.

This Husavik Whale Museum is a true gem in this charming Icelandic town! Although the museum isn’t large, it’s incredibly well-organized and thoroughly covers the fascinating topic of whales and their lives. The exhibition is beautifully prepared and presents the lives of these majestic animals in an extremely engaging way. The museum excellently showcases both the beauty of whales and the serious threats they face. Particularly moving are the sections about whaling and its impact on these magnificent marine mammals. While it’s sad to note that despite receiving licenses, the Icelandic company was the only one to withdraw from this practice mid-year, while Norwegian and Japanese whaling continues. The museum staff deserves special praise - they are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and what’s more, you can communicate in Polish! This is a huge convenience for Polish tourists. My only small suggestion would be adding whale sounds in the background, which would further enrich the experience, but the atmosphere was very pleasant nonetheless. The wonderful souvenir shop offers beautiful and unique whale-related products. It’s the perfect place to buy special gifts or mementos from your visit. Husavik is known as Iceland’s “whale capital,” and the waters around the town are among the best places in the world to observe these animals. The museum perfectly prepares visitors for whale watching cruises by providing knowledge about local species. The entrance ticket costs around 200 ISK for adults (about 66 PLN), which is very reasonable for such a rich educational experience. Thank you so much for the opportunity to visit this wonderful town and museum! Husavik Whale Museum is a must-see for anyone interested in marine life. I highly recommend it!

Sights & Landmarks
The Húsavík Wooden Church, also known as Húsavikurkirkja, is a beloved and unique church in Iceland. Built in 1907 from Norwegian timber, the red-and-white church stands out with its delicate proportions and cruciform shape. Inside, visitors can admire a depiction of the resurrection of Lazarus on the altarpiece made from lava.
Beautiful church in the center of Husavik. It overlooks the bay, you can’t miss it, it’s at the Main Street. Interesting architecture design, very Scandinavian. Matches well the city and the area. We didn’t go inside but please do if you are in the area. Plenty of parking behind the church and lots of street parking.

Built in the Nordic style, reportedly one of the most beautiful churches in Iceland. Having previously toured much of outer Iceland, I can agree that this is the nicest I have seen, even better in my mind than Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik, which while large and majestic, is a bit nouveau. I did not have an opportunity to enter this church so cant comment on the interior.

Iconic and vibrant in the overall backdrop of the harbor and town. Easy to see from whale watching tour destinations and provides a good vantage point of the boats and docks. We only walked by and didn't enter the church.

Nice place to visit, specially when they have the chours, which is truly magic! Inside there are just few amenities but it takes a so short time to visit it that it is good choice.

Clearly, outmost care is taken for the safe keeping and maintenance of this church. The church is stunning outside, and especially inside.

Skútustaðagígar is a series of pseudocraters formed by lava flow, located in the stunning surroundings of Lake Mývatn wetlands. This area is renowned for its diverse birdlife and offers well-marked routes and trails to explore the remarkable landscapes and study the varied flora and fauna.
Skútustaðagígar is a fantastic and quick stop on the south side of Lake Mývatn. It's an easy walk from the parking lot, and the stunning views make it well worth the brief detour. From the top, you'll be treated to a breathtaking panorama of Lake Mývatn, surrounded by vibrant green fields where Icelandic horses often graze. The craters themselves are a geological marvel, formed by steam explosions when molten lava flowed over the wetlands. It's an incredible example of volcanic activity and a beautiful spot to take some photos and appreciate the unique landscape. Highly recommended for a short, scenic break!

This is a natural attraction near the southwest shores of Lake Myvatn that you can access from the Visitor Centre carpark. What you find is a field of pseudo craters were formed during the volcanic eruptions of Lúdentaborgir and Þrengslaborgir around 2,300 years ago. You will find trail information at the main trailhead. There are several trails of various lengths that pass through the pseudo crater field. You can walk up several of them and look inside, not a lot to see of the pseudo craters compared to nearby crater called Hverfjall and the craters tend to look more definitive from a distance compared to up close but the grounds are still fairly interesting geologically. There is quality birdlife in this area as well if you have interest and a set of binoculars.

Free parking near the entrance to this beautiful place. The short round-trip is less than 1,5 km and the views are incredible. Some shops, public toilets and refreshments nearby.

This was our first stop in our itinerary around Lake Mývatn. Free close parking in front of the visitor centre. Multiple trails exists, we've taken the shorter trail which takes you around the closest pseudo craters in a loop with nice vistas over the imminent lake and Hverir geothermal far in the background. Allocate between 30mins to 1 hours depending on your pace. It's nice but not overly impressive thus if pressed in time, drop this definitely in favor of Dimmuborgir and Hverfjall.

It’s a great idea to talk to the rangers at the station. They have a wealth of information to share with you

Lovely place to walk around and enjoy the views. A few bugs still in early September, but manageable.

Nice little stop on your way somewhere. The shortest walk is 1.5km called SK1. Parking and entrance are free. Beautiful view of the lake and cool to walk inside and around the pseudo craters. The view of the snowy peaks far away is also very beautiful. Can get windy.
