Hospital Our Lady with the Rose

Mentioned on
1 list
$$$$affordable
Local history museum
Hospital Our Lady with the Rose, established in 1242, is Belgium's sole surviving medieval convent-farm-hospital complex. Meticulously restored, it showcases the evolution of medieval medicine through a stunning herb garden and various hospice eras, featuring a display of historical medical tools. Notable exhibits include a bird-beaked plague doctor and a 16th-century painting depicting Jesus with a female breast. The site also houses an impressive collection of religious art.
Our Tour Guide was excellent. The lobby and restaurant are very nice and clean. The garden is beautiful, with it's intricate landscaping. The Hospitality was overflowing. The history, attention to details on the displays is impressive. There's so much to capture. Our Historian captured every detail in this Historical Hospital. The Hospital made a tremendous impact in the Commune of Lessines, Belgium. Well done. Highly recommend!
Timothy O — Google review
Visiting the Hospital de Notre Dame Lessines is like stepping into a time machine, whisking you back to the medieval era. This magnificent hospital-convent is a treasure trove of history, where the pest doctor mode is not just a costume but a full-on experience. The knowledge shared about the intersection of medicine and history is nothing short of enlightening, delivered in an authentic setting that feels untouched by time. The garden, open for all to explore, is a delightful bonus. They even house poisonous plants. Picture yourself wandering among herbs and enjoying stunning views that make you forget the town of Lessines itself isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot. While the town may not be worth your time, this gem certainly is. If you’re a history buff or just someone who appreciates a good story, this place is well worth a visit! Very suited for #darktourism
Karoadtrips — Google review
a wonderful place that is definitely worth seeing, we parked on a nearby street, the hospital is almost in the city center, they have free admission on Sundays, English-speaking staff, toilets available, it starts with a short movie, then you walk through the individual rooms with a electronic voice guide, part of the tour is also outside of building - garden and courtyard, the hospital was extremely interesting not only for adults but also for children, I definitely recommend seeing
Marek S — Google review
Great visit. A lot of stuff to see. Take your time for this museum. Guess the garden is best visited during summer. And you can have a nice drink on the terrace nextdoor near the fountain.
Jochen S — Google review
Wonderful tour with the local Flemish guide who narrated to the history with much passion, wit and detail. Recommend taking the guided tour over the audio guide. Compelling story on a historically uniquely preserved place.
Kurt D — Google review
As a new resident to Lessines, I was given tickets to visit the museum. The museum also sent a letter to new residents to go collect a welcome gift of books and postcards based on the hospital. Staff were all very welcoming and congratulatory. Audio guide was available in English. I particularly loved the medicinal garden, though it was winding down for the winter. I will definitely make another visit the the garden during spring and summer as it was an ideal place to study plants, with everything clearly labelled and informative, in French.
Wincy Y — Google review
Very old hospital that was running from the 13th century became a museum in the second half of the 20th century. Old times the cure for human soul was even more important than cure for the body. As time went by you can see the development of medicine over several centurys. The collection of old instruments is a bit creepy and makes you feel happy that you didn't have to be a patient old times.
Pille P — Google review
Very nice place! 😀 They even have kids' panels (in French, no NL or ENG). Audiophones in NL and FR for adults. Very interesting, especially the old pharmacy! Unfortunately it was raining that day but that didn't stop us from enjoying the covered and heated terrace after the museum visit! Also saw the herbal garden for the pharmacy, learned so much about poisonous plants haha. Absolutely worth it!

Gaasbeek Castle

Gaasbeek Castle, located in Lennik, Flemish Brabant, Belgium, is a stunning 19th-century castle with romantic architecture dating back to medieval times. The castle houses an impressive collection of artworks and boasts extensive gardens that are considered among the most beautiful in the country. While the interior may not feature much furniture, it still offers a glimpse into the past and hosts various exhibitions.
Gaasbeek Castle is definitely worth a visit. They recently finished a renovation that took almost three years, and it really shows. The castle looks great, both inside and out. They've done a good job of keeping a lot of the original items, so it feels very authentic and you get a real sense of the history. It's quite informative as you walk through. The castle garden is also a highlight. It's really beautiful and well-maintained, with different sections to explore. It's a nice place for a relaxed stroll. The wider castle grounds are good for hiking too. You can easily spend some time walking around and enjoying the scenery. Just a heads-up, while the castle and grounds are excellent for adults and older visitors, the interior with its historical artifacts might not be the most engaging for very young children. Teenagers and up would probably get more out of it. Overall, it's a very good experience if you're looking for a historical day out with impressive grounds. There are 2 free of charge parkings, You can buy a combo tickets for the castle and the castle garden. I personally find the garden - a garden, with flowers, fruit trees, nothing extra ordinary.
Video D — Google review
The Gaasbeek Castle is a must, you approach it down a long avenue of trees the exterior is well maintained as is the interior. You can visit many rooms and even get lost there is so much to see. The detailed vaulted ceilings and the tapestries are superb. From the kitchen area with projections to the coin collection there are endless choices.
Graham S — Google review
Lovely castle in picturesque surrounds. They have done a wonderful renovation bringing it all back to life. The museum gardens were very special. Staff very helpful. Maybe a few more snack choices in castle cafe.
Natasha M — Google review
We visited this handsome castle on a very cloudy and rainy day and it did not take away an inch from its charm and warmth. It was surprisingly calm and there were only a handful of people present. I've seen many many castles but not like this one. On entrance, it pleasantly welcomes you and leaves you in awe. The castle itself was very clean and extremely well maintained. The staff were very friendly as well. The walk to and around the castle is an experience of itself and I recommend taking a tour around the pond. It was my first time, but I'm glad to say we will meet again very soon.
Kenan — Google review
This is a beautiful castle set on impeccably maintained grounds. You should definitely take a few hours to go and do the castle tour and to see the ornamental gardens.
Joris L — Google review
Very nice place to go for a walk, to relax and make a picnic. If you don't want to visit inside the castle or the garden, you don't need to pay every the parking is free.
Sebastian V — Google review
Great open space, well maintained gardens and lake. Restaurant and ice cream pancake bar nearby. Free parking
Rubini R — Google review
We combined the Castle with the adjacent Museum-Garden. We visited both much too quickly: they each deserve 90 minutes! The Castle is...romantically weird or weirdly romantic. The Garden is just fabulous.

Hallerbos

Mentioned on

National forest
Nature & Parks
Hallerbos, also known as the 'Belgians Blue Forest,' is a serene woodland famous for its stunning display of bluebells in spring. During April, millions of blue hyacinths bloom, creating a magical blue carpet amidst tall green trees. The forest offers well-maintained walking, cycling, and horse riding paths suitable for visitors of all ages.
Hallerbos is a stunning forest in Belgium, famous for its bluebell carpet that blooms in spring. The forest offers scenic walks, a forest museum, and a rich history. It is a great place to enjoy nature and relax. Hallerbos is managed by the Agency for Nature and Forest, and is accessible by public transport or car. I highly recommend visiting this forest, especially during the bluebell season.
Ginsy — Google review
Another beautiful gem in Belgium. Went there on Friday eve just before first shuttle starts operating to avoid crowds. Hyacinths are not in full bloom yet, but the peace around makes up for it. Saw a lovely deer too!
Klaudia — Google review
My husband and I went to appreciate the bluebells (Wilde Hyacint) that are in full bloom. It was absolutely breathtaking and I was so happy that I could experience it.
Fara A — Google review
A huge nature park full of beautiful blue bell flowers. We hiked around the recommend trail for around 3 hours. You can easily make this a whole day trip if you want to. Nice place to visit around April during spring to see the flowers bloomed.
Romeo — Google review
Famous for the blue hyacinth, but before they show up the forrest floor is covered with anemones, and at the right time, you will see both. The forrest itself is remarkable, also outside the hyacinth festival, hilly with great tracks and trails….
Ole L — Google review
A wonderful park, 30 minutes from Brussels. Many hiking and biking trails. Purple Zvoncic magically colours the entire forest, which is an incredible sight. This is not a phenomenon. There are forests like this all over the world, but the Belgians have protected this environment well and made it an attraction. In any case, a good walk and a wonderful view.
Radovan Z — Google review
Very nice forest to take a walk - even without the beautiful flowers! The park is quite big and the trails are marked very well. Can be quite cold, as the sunshine is blocked by the trees - but that can be a plus in the hot summer months. The are several parking spots, which can be seen on the map of the park in one of the attached photos.
Zahari V — Google review
Get prepared to walk amidst tall green trees. Walking, cycling, horse ride paths are well maintained. Kids friendly, solo, groups, family- a place for everyone to relax. Enough parking areas around the little forest. During this hyacinth festival, there are free buses running from Halle station during weekends. Tables to sit here and there. A good picnic spot, no entrance ticket. Blue bells all around is a wonderful sight to walk. Visitors leave the place as it is and pick your trash.

Museums
Musée de la Photographie is a prominent photography museum located in a former Carmelite convent, featuring an extensive collection of historic, contemporary, and artistic prints. The museum offers engaging exhibits on airbrushing, optical illusions, and the experience of standing within a giant pinhole camera. Renovated in 2008 with a modern annex, the museum covers 2,200 square meters and showcases photography from various periods through fixed and temporal exhibitions.
One of the best photography museums I have been to! Such a stunning building, everything here was made to perfection, every detail counts, plus, the gardens! The permanent collection was well-curated, I loved every room! Extra thanks for the table with autochromes. The temporary exhibitions were great as well! The cafe was a nice addition, too.
Julia S — Google review
Nice museum, cafeteria and parc
Aneta C — Google review
Went with little to no expectations, got lost in time while being mesmerized by both the different types of camera and also the exhibitions. Definitely worth the visit
Gabriel B — Google review
As a photographer, this was probably my best museum experience in Europe. Fortunately, when I went there, there was an amazing on-going exhibition of photo project from Africa. So many awesome photographs from when photography started back in the 1800s till today. The museum is huge, so I would say get ready to spend there 3 hours at least. Be a professional or just an amateur photographer, or just a passionate about photography, don't miss this if you are in Charleroi.
Jean H — Google review
It's very old but well kept and quite cool photos and things to see. The area not so great of Charleroi and avoid the town. But parking outside which helped.
Tam B — Google review
We visited in late May. Our ‘quick stop’ stretched to over 2 hours! A fascinating collection, well organized, a gem!
Diane F — Google review
Large museum (largest of whole Europe apparently), as they have a great collection with some big names. You follow the history of photography through the centuries (surrealist hall was really cool), get an overview of the important aspects of making good photos in an educative hall and there are different expositions. For sure worth the ride out of the city.
Robin B — Google review
Great collection, in the largest photography museum of Europe. Temporary exhibitions as well! Nice place as it is a former Carmel abbaye. Quite difficult to park. A pity that the superbe garden is not really used in the context of the exhibitions and or permanent collection. Nice café in situ.

absolutely fantastic trip, we love such walkings, part of the route goes along the rush road, but mostly it goes in the woods or by a quiet road, the dam is nice, big, water is clean, we found many crayfish there! we did the route marked black on the map, parked at the parking lot Falemprise (for free), in the middle of the route in the village Cerfontaine we had an excellent Chimay beer and bought some meal in Carrefour, in total it took us 6 hours including a small picnic, I recommend to visit this place, we will be back for sure... pros: you can make this route be bike without any problems...

Du Côté des Renoir

Worthwhile visiting this place and walking in the footsteps of Renoir, especially in summer when he visited also. You get the feel of the simplicity of the village divided by the river, and to be inspired. Good to do the walking tour, just follow the red signs around the village, takes you to all the major parts. Enjoy!!!
Con S — Google review
They have made a great program for everyone to have a dynamic couple of hours walking the city of Essoyes and discovering the life of the man and artist. Renoir's House, Gardens, his studio, the cemetery where you can find his grave and that of his wife plus the cultural center where you can watch a short film in English/ French and see the cute exhibition. Very friendly people/youth greeting us as we passed by. All in all, an enjoyable and educational experience for adults and young people. I say just come to this city. You will end up with a bunch of beautiful pictures to remember the visit. Audio guides available. Credit cards accepted. English-speaking staff.
Daisy A — Google review
I love visiting this little museum in Essoyes, the foundation that manages the Renoir estate and studio do such a great job. The staff is particularly friendly, speak English (thankfully, still learning French) and they are really nice and helpful. We chose to take along the head-sets and I'm glad we did! The life and times of Renoir is fascinating how this artist saw real life and painted it. I'm so glad he did. One of my absolute favorite painters who also LIVED his life shows in the walking museum through the town. You will learn so much about his first love ART as well as his daily life in this "vacation" or resting spot for him to reflect. Every time I am in Champagne~Ardenne I include this on my itinerary because everyone enjoys it so much. This precious little town too, makes me want to rent an apartment and just walk the streets on a Saturday morning and step back in time.
Travel W — Google review
Terrific village to spend the afternoon with a picnic and a comfortable pair of shoes. The village is very quaint and photogenic. They have many bistros and bars to eat and drink. The Renoir exhibit is very informative and detailed. It is a walking tour that starts in the office of tourism and ends at his grave.

Stopped here today (26/9/23)and the public walkways are still closed. It is an amazing structure and well worth stopping to see and photograph. There is no work going on - there doesn’t appear to be anything structural needed as trains are still crossing. Grottes de Bèze

Tours
Sightseeing Tours
I have never seen water so crystal clear. A great deal of effort is being made to preserve this environment. The underground temperature is kept at 12 degrees Celsius year-round. There are no fish. This is an adventure that can only be experienced during this season. During the winter, the water level rises and it becomes impossible to enter the cave.
Ayumi — Google review
Visited at the end of April. The town itself is well worth your time. Meandering local streets filled with centuries old buildings by the river and a walk up to the grotto takes you back to other times. The grotto was an interesting side visit especially since you get in a boat to meander up and down the cave section that has an interesting history both timeless and fascinating. Very quiet tourist wise that time of year so no battle for parking or queues to get in. Kids will love the boat ride in the “dark".
Daggy B — Google review
Small cave well presented by the guides. The tour includes a boat trip inside. Not that spectacular though.

well organized with friendly enthousiastic volunteers, worth the entry fee. toilet available and drinks for fair prices at the entrance. be aware due too limited capacity of the boats working with time slots and full is full

A nice view of the cave with a great story written around the cave. Very entertaining, cool to sit in a boat in a cave without an engine. Once it falls silent its quite eerie. Didn't know what to expect going in, but exceeded any expectation I had. The town outside and the source of the river are also very picturesque and worth a visit. Sadly not really a place to get a nice lunch when we visited.

Nestled on the exterior of the stunning Eglise Notre-Dame in Dijon, the Owl of Dijon (La Chouette de Dijon) is a charming stone sculpture that has captured the hearts of locals and visitors alike. This small yet significant owl is not just an artistic feature; it’s believed to grant wishes when gently stroked, making it a must-visit for those seeking a bit of magic during their travels.
Cute little owl on the side of the cathedral. So many ppl touched it... you can't really see the owl anymore. Follow the golden plaque arrows around the city to find it
Taehee K — Google review
Cool and iconic in Dijon... easy to find. It's nice to find it without Google maps to make it for Cool... just follow the signs on the street floor.
Luis G — Google review
A modern old town, just follow the golden arrows for sightseeing. The shops are neat and orderly. I saw people slipping after the rain because the floor is slippery. It is recommended to wear shoes a good shoes. There is a restaurant that supports Down syndrome. I recommend you try it.
Jiraporn C — Google review
Palm-sized and polished by countless hands, the little owl carved into Notre-Dame’s wall turns a side lane into a ritual. Touch with your left hand and make a wish; the brass pavement plate with the owl logo marks the stop and small arrows carry you along Dijon’s Parcours de la Chouette. This is the route’s namesake and most photographed moment: modest stone, big civic idea. I like how the trail knits small details to major landmarks - marker, brief engagement, onward wayfinding - so one carving speaks to grander sites across the old town.
Loo Y — Google review
Super nice tour especially for kids which are keen on discovering the next owl of Dijon on the way. All nice attractions can be seen on this journey.

Loved randomly following footpath markers to discover iconic landmarks in Dijon. You can buy a €4 map from the tourist office and do it in an organized manner or just set yourself a challenge to see how many you can find on your travels.

I like it - brings good luck if you place your right hand on it :) A tip from a local: Once there, make sure to check the rooftop of the building to the right of the owl, you'll find beautiful owl and cat.. keeping an eye on the city ;) (photo below)

The Museum of Fine Arts Dijon is located in the Palais Des Ducs et des Etats de Bourbogne, a complex of buildings with different architectural styles. It houses remarkable collections from the 14th to 19th century, including art from Antiquity to the 21st century, Middle Ages, and Renaissance.
Beautiful museum! Spacious with beautiful displays of paintings, sculptures, and archeological artifacts, located in the historical section of Dijon. I spent three hours here and did not see everything, of course time spent depends on your interest. The staff was very friendly, the cost was free! (Thank you!) Museum hours were wonderful, open until 6:30! Highly recommend!

The rooms are beautiful. Lots of classic old works, a few modern works, so not very impressive for me. Admission is free, so it's worth seeing the architecture. Beware, there's a trap on the first floor, you'll never get out without asking... we weren't the only ones. Fortunately, the lovely security staff are there to help.

We were greeted by very friendly staff who explained the museum's layout. This museum is large, entry is free, and there are several floors of exhibits to see. The grounds around the museum are picturesque as well. Enjoy!

A free art museum! It was a treat, of course. I'm not an expert, but I think their collection was very good, based mostly on the Duc's collection. Don't miss the Duc and Duchess's tombs! Everything was in french and it wasn't very crowded, even on a Saturday and even with people fleeing from the rain, like we were.

The Best Things in Life Are Free Well, that’s certainly true for the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. I first discovered it a few years ago while tracking works by Vieira da Silva and Nicolas de Staël—and since then, it has become an almost obligatory stop on the way to or back from the South. Just three hours from Luxembourg, and each visit brings something new. This time, a megalomaniac Chinese painter exhibited right in front of the tombs of the Dukes of Burgundy—a juxtaposition as unexpected as it is striking. And if you’re traveling with children, don’t miss the fantastical animals of Pompon. A place where history, discovery, and wonder are all free of charge.

Incredible museum. Very rich collection and well displayed and organised. Free to hold your bags in lockers and the staff are friendly and professional. Highly recommend visiting here!

The Dijon Museum of Fine Arts is well organised and an example of a must see museum outside of Paris, London, etc. There's everything from beautifully curated medieval art to sculpture to art and photography of the 1900s and 2000s. As a bonus, it's free to enter. Most definitely a not to be missed attraction in Dijon.

Abbaye Saint-Philibert de Tournus is a medieval Romanesque church known for its stunning stone vaults, numerous statues, mosaics, and stained-glass windows. The abbey has a rich history dating back to the 6th century when a church was first built on the site of a former Roman army camp. It gained prominence in 875 when the remains of Saint Philibert were interred here.
Impressive medieval structure with some wonderful discoveries inside. The ancient stone walls, interesting windows and the crypt all convey the time of construction. In the crypt are some columns that are Roman in origin from a temple predating the abbey.
Gary R — Google review
It is one of the most beautiful constructions of medieval times. Best atmosphere and vibes ✨️
Pruthvi S — Google review
This church and Abbey is one of the best preserved in France. It is surrounded by it's own walls and gates which gives it an impression of a fotres. Already in the 6th century a church was built here in a place where there used to be a Roman castrum or army camp. The Abbey got a boost in 875 when the remains of Saint Philibert were put to rest in this church and gave it it's name. The church is sober on the interior but has some interesting mosaics behind the main altar. At the entrance is a small exhibition. The Abbey has a nice central courtyard

Cascade des Tufs is a picturesque and easily accessible wooded waterfall, perfect for swimming, wading, and picnicking. It's more serene than other waterfalls in the Jura region and can be reached by a short walk from the village parking lot. The area offers a bistro terrace for refreshments and is great for spending time with family and friends. However, it's recommended to arrive early for photography due to the narrow valley with tall trees that darken quickly in the evening.
Very lovely short trail from the village and beautiful water.

La Maison De La Vache Qui Rit is a museum dedicated to The Laughing Cow cheeses, offering interactive exhibits and multimedia experiences for children. It also serves as an emblematic symbol of the city, showcasing its heritage and local businesses. Visitors can explore hidden shops, stroll through picturesque squares, and admire notable landmarks in the area. Additionally, the museum hosts guided tours led by Bel group employees during special events like European Heritage Days, providing insights into the industrial processes behind the beloved cheese portions.
Thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the museum! It was an unexpected find during our road trip so we thoroughly enjoyed our experience here! You learn about the history of the brand and how the cheese is produced. Fun little interactive stops for kids (or a big kid like me haha) and just an overall fun little place for the family. I was happy to pick up a few fun souvenirs at the gift shop and some snacks for the car as we continued on with our road trip!
Cris L — Google review
The overall experience was fine, but given that this is a highly commercial museum, all the messaging around their product is overwhelmingly positive. While they do include some factual information, they also conveniently leave out important points, for instance, that processed cheese typically has lower nutritional value, being high in fat, low in protein, and full of additives. I’m not a fan of how they market it as a healthy food choice in the museum. To me, it’s more about convenience and palatability for kids. Framing it as healthy feels misleading, especially for a younger audience.
P Z — Google review
It’s a museum of the famous La Vache Qui Rit (the laughing cow) cheese. A family cheese business that melted the worlds tastes buds with its creamy cheese. It has a lot of fun activities both for young and old. You can follow the history of thru the webpage with voice over provided. A wifi will be available for the entire tour. A short but enjoyable tour. Don’t forget to take home a souvenir for this your.
Keren B — Google review
Great place to know the history of La Vache qui rit and all the products,
R D — Google review
The visit is fairly expensive (8$) and honestly there isn't much to see other than the exposition explaining some of the history behind the brand but all turned in a way to show how great they are. I wanted to get a better understanding of how the cheese is made and the process behind it, which they didn't provide. Probably good for kids though alot of the interactive displays were closed due to covid
Mischa K — Google review
The museum is kinda cool. On the other hand, the "escape game", which isn't actually one, has really upset me. You have to go to a website on your phone but it only works with chrome, and it's really just 4 mini games for kids.
Rijaja — Google review
What can you say, it's the house of the laughing cow. Expect cows, laughter and the origin story, complement with an interactive section and finish at the, way too alluring, gift shop.
El O — Google review
I came here at 510pm and they won’t let me in because their cashier closes at 5pm and the museum closes at 6pm! How ridiculous! Post on your website! Waste of time for people who drive all the way over! Such a disappointment for the kids!

Amazing place in Jura Mountains. Definitely don’t miss it, if you’re coming in the area. Even though the water flow was low and it was so crowded (public holiday and august) we really enjoyed the place. Suitable for families with children also. I defininitely recommend wearing hiking shoes (not sneakers or running shoes, it can be slippery).

Beautiful hike and falls. We went on a public holiday, which made it quite busy. Although it was still very enjoyable, would recommend going on a weekday or a regular weekend.
Rhys B — Google review
Nice hike yet quite a lot of people on the “main route”. Keep you eyes on the map when leaving the waterfall route for a longer hike, a wrong left turn might turn into a loooong walk….

Very nice place for walk and kids hangout. Remember there is one parking above and then you walk down, another parking is down and you walk up. If you are with kids preferably go to parking down. Feb 2024
Mahmood Z — Google review
Quite crowded but not without reason. Several lathe and small waterfalls can be viewed and experienced from a will maintained path. Though mostly easy to walk with stairs were needed, it can be sometimes a bit steep and slippery. Because there is only one trail along the river and the trail at points only allows one person, when crowded it is easily jammed. Don't forget to bring some food and drinks with you if you venture past the first waterfall. There is plenty of parking space (paid).
Stefan A — Google review
Beautiful waterfalls and walk...would definately recommend it for a day trip. It could be quite difficult to walk parts of the route if you had limited mobility as there are many steps and slippery rocks but you can choose how far you walk. On the route we took I couldn't see any restrooms or restaurants which were open unfortunately
Emily — Google review
Nice cascade. Unfortunately, it was almost dry because of the hot summer. -2 stars because of the parking lot for which you have to pay (5 euro 1h). The first 20 minutes are free, but it is almost impossible (without running) in that timeslot to walk to the waterfall and back
Stefan V — Google review
Absolutely stunning waterfalls. Make sure you wear good footwear with a lot of grip as it's quite slippy in places. Also it's best not to go off on the longer walk in the forest without a map as it is really easy to get lost! There are multiple paths and they are not sign posted once you get away from the main walk along the gorge with the waterfalls.

If you're looking for a delightful family outing, the Musée du Jouet de Moirans-en-Montagne is an enchanting destination that promises to transport visitors of all ages back to their childhood. Nestled in a picturesque area south of Lac de Vouglans, this toy museum showcases an impressive collection of both vintage and contemporary toys. As you wander through its thoughtfully curated exhibits, you'll encounter rare antique toys that offer a glimpse into how previous generations played.
A wonderful place for both individuals and family orientated groups. Really a place to re-live our childhood years and remember all the old toys and games we used to play and the museum housed many rare antique toys to be able to jump back in time to get to know how other previous generations past used to play. Really appreciate how much the museum has managed to cover and preserve so well all the years. A must visit and there's sure to be something there to amuse individuals of any age.

Nice museum... Quite a lot of info on toys.. Don't think it's worth the entry fee however.
Guillaume P — Google review
Disappointing. I perhaps expect that a toy museum should reflect the nature of the subject, joy, excitement, learning, interaction. The variety and extent of this subject opens so much potential and possibility. Instead I found an extremely limited selection of an extensive subject, much not covered, empty space, few explanations, so little interaction, demonstration, movement or sound. The limited range of toys are almost entirely behind glass facades, it lacks almost any joy or excitement. Perhaps too, as tourists we should not expect the limited narrative in anything other than French... But as such, the 10€ entrance fee is really excessive.

Very beautiful monastery with a rich history, unsurprising given how old Europe is. And this one has been well maintained, even hosting music and arts shows outside of just the walk around tour of the monastery itself. Obvious ongoing upkeep and restoration work is happening which is great given that this monastery is close to 500 years old. Doesn't look a day over 300. 🤪

Pérouges Cité Médiévale

Tourist information center
Sights & Landmarks
Pérouges Cité Médiévale is a small medieval town located on a hill east of Lyon, just a 45-minute drive away. The town was rebuilt in the mid-1400s and has been historically significant for trade and defense. Approximately 400 people live within its walls, and there are some tourist-friendly businesses such as restaurants and shops. A two-hour guided tour offers insights into the town's 500-year history.
Well preserved village. The architecture is unique. The food was so good. They are so many souvenir shops but we are not lucky. That day was rainy and most of the shops were closed. Don’t forget to say Hi to a fat cat🐱

This place is great. I love history. Thus, I liked the place and atmosphere.

Pérouges is a beautifully preserved medieval village that feels like stepping into a fairytale. Cobbled streets, stone houses, ivy-covered facades — every corner is photogenic and full of charm. It’s not big, but that’s part of its beauty: you can wander slowly, take in the atmosphere, and imagine what life was like centuries ago. There are lovely artisan shops, small cafés, and a few restaurants where you can enjoy local specialties — especially the famous galette de Pérouges, which is absolutely worth tasting warm with a bit of sugar caramelized on top. It’s peaceful, authentic, and only a short drive from Lyon — perfect for a half-day or slow afternoon escape. Go early or late in the day if you want to avoid crowds and enjoy the serenity of the place. Highly recommended for anyone who loves history, quiet beauty, and timeless villages.

A lovely stone middle age town, nice for taking a walk but became a bit commercial.
M M — Google review
It was quite an interesting tour of this great medieval city before Christmas time. The restaurants and cafes were all decorated for Christmas, and we tried mulled wine in one of the places. At this time of year the city is not so crowded with visitors.
Fulya G — Google review
Very interesting place, with a 3-4 restaurants which are full around lunch time, but you can have pancakes with ham or Nutella on the street. It's a beautiful Medieval town, especially during the Autumn because of the colours of the falling leaves.

I could not get enough of this beautiful historic place. I was. Awe around each corner I walked. Simply beautiful. Bring you best pair of waking shoes and a lot of space on your phone to take pictures.

This place is very beautiful and has not a lot visitors. One day trip would be far enough to enjoy entirely of this village. I stayed one night (Wed) and there is no restaurant opening for dinner.

The Caves of La Balme

Heritage preservation
Storied cliff caves open for tours of prehistoric relics, limestone pillars & a frescoed chapel.
This place was honestly a surprise. Around 50 km from Lyon, and once you're inside, it's like a hidden world. Big chambers, tunnels, underground lakes...quiet and slightly spooky in a good way. Every spot has a story to tell. The Lake inside looked amazing, and the small maze section was fun. It’s self-guided so you can take your time. Not too crowded, which made it even better. Just wear proper shoes as it can be a bit slippery. If you're near Lyon and want to see something different, this is totally worth it. Note: Skip the maze if tight spaces freak you out or if you're a big guy, you might get stuck!😉

Really nice place to visit close to Lyon. Pérouges and these caves make for a cool 1 day visit. The labyrinth inside the caves were the most liked feature of the family. The chapelle at the entrance is really beautiful.

One of the breathtaking wonders of nature! An hour drive from Lyon, this place was precious find. Honestly it is journey through time and space. When you squeeze yourself through the natural maze between rocks, you are not yourself anymore. You can sense a different spirit traversing those thin passages. Just beautiful 😍

What an amazing experience we really enjoyed it. You get to explore the cave and travel down tight tunnels it's a load of fun and very interesting. We only found it as we stopped of for the night but will be telling everyone about it and it's very well priced. Well done to the town for this experience

The Village Outlet

Outlet mall
Shopping
"The Village Outlet" is a shopper's haven located just 30 minutes from Lyon, France. It offers a wide range of fashion, sports, design, and cosmetic brands at discounted prices. The outlet features ample parking and various dining options. Visitors recommend arriving in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy a convenient shopping experience. Additionally, it provides interactive maps and seating areas for convenience.
We had a great day at the Village Outlet, easily 7-8 hours. There's a comprehensive variety of shops, with many of the key brands (both on the middle and higher end), so there's something for everyone. Outlet prices are rather compelling at most shops. A good tip would be to shortlist items first and make an entire round across all shops before making an informed purchase, to ensure you've gotten the best deal possible across all stores. It's a short 1.4km walk to and from the train station, which is more predictable. Do note that the train towards Lyon city centre is hourly, so time your departure from the outlet accordingly.
Jonathan C — Google review
Very nice and big outlet shopping place, about 40 minutes from Lyon center by train , they have many good brands, coffee shops and restaurants, the prices are very reasonable..it does worth a visit.

Outlet Mall 40 Min from Lyon center Nice mall open area Parking free available Many brand in average price Also restaurants is available
Yazan Q — Google review
The prices are not the best, can find cheaper prices at Printemp with the sales! The service is good, mid range items. But I find the place poorly designed, poor wifi coverage and data doesn’t have signal inside the shops. Can’t find the reception for tax refund. Not tourist friendly. Mainly French crowd. Would I come back? Maybe. With better signage. They should consider hourly shuttle from the train station to make it more accessible. A notch lower than the other established outlets in Europe. If only prices can be cheaper by 10-20%, then it would be worth it.
Boon T — Google review
Great outlet, one of the best I have been to so far. It’s pretty small for an outlet but had a lot of good options for winter clothes and ski clothes in particular. They have an interactive map stands and a lot of places to seat. There is a big food court as well. Commute form Lyon is not super convenient (it’s a 20 mins walk from the station if you don’t have a car) but it’s expected for an outlet
Alexey S — Google review
nice place, enough shops, diverse shops, clean
I S — Google review
This opinion is dedicated to the reception only, and implies only my own point of view. The woman receptionist (the oldest one) is very rude. She is supposed to represent the whole mall center but she doesn’t have any skills in communication and quality of service. Her way of speaking to customers is very direct, before even introducing your question, she does find problems and say things like «  ah non non non on ne fait pas ça ici » /«  no no no we don’t do that here ». She is not helpful nor nice to people. She really needs to be trained in serving customers or find another job that fits her. We come often to The Village but going through the detax service is a real pain… she is very hasty, I really can’t understand why she is at the reception desk
Shrimp — Google review
Amazing shopping mall! Overpriced and impractical. My young adult daughter only found one store with somewhat reasonably-priced clothing. The fountain show with music was beautiful and the mall is clean and gorgeous.

Magnificent. A piece of fairytale. A jewel in the middle of nowhere. The owners, founders were there, still taking care of in the age of 80 years old. Great place that everyone should experience. Be there min for 2h to enjoy and relax.

Well worth a visit. The whole place is just wonderful and not too big with relaxing shaded intimate areas, and lovely to get lost in. The architecture is impressive, at times quirky, and provides a great backdrop to the flourishing, healthy plants and colourful flowers. Very well maintained and a warm welcome. A must see is the short film about the family and how the gardens were created. I will be back!

Fascinating little place. Amazing use of space. A little busy at lunch time. You may have to queue for lunch (or maybe we were just unlucky). Staff very friendly and spoke English.
Kirby C — Google review
Very creative design of multiple small gardens. Woodwork, copper work, glasswork, painted furniture. And manicured flowers and plants. Very memorable. “A bit too much” sometimes. Worth taking the small menu for lunch.
Olivier J — Google review
So, so worth it. Swiss woodworking meets a Moroccan riad, through a Persian garden and a decent slice of the Lord of the Rings. Stay for lunch. Listen to the fountains. Get lost in the open covered galleries. This outstrips most palace gardens I've seen. Seriously magnifique.
Hannah K — Google review
This is a story is a family in love with wooden furniture. The place is cozy and excellent for lunch on sunny days. I have mixed feelings about this place. In one hand it is amazing how come a family was able to build all this with their own hands. On the other side we have a mix of so many styles that I really don't know if Inlike or not. Would suggest you visit and let me know your opinion.
Sergio O — Google review
Mix of kitchen garden greens and flowers with Moroccan riad type of concept. While nice on flora, not for everyone. A bit too much, stuffed with old or quasi old items all over.

Lovely as usual, beautiful flowers and spaces even mid September. If you don't linger, the visit lasts about an hour, with a ten min english subtitled explanation movie, but take your time and take a nice break 💜

Gorges du Fier is a natural wonder in France, featuring a 300-meter-long and 70-meter-deep gorge with a river flowing through it. It's open for several months each year and offers an easy, picturesque walk suitable for families. The footbridge provides stunning views of the impressive rock formations, and there's even a cafe on-site serving hot food.
Such a magical place! I loved visiting this place, very beautiful and exciting. Go there and enjoy wonderful walk through this canyon for about 60 minutes. A ticket costs 6 euros and the staff are very friendly, they also have a small Café and the prices are fair.

A great place to enjoy nature! It’s comfortable even on very hot days thanks to the plenty of shade and the cool breeze from the river. The trail is easy and suitable for all levels..
Hila — Google review
This was a fun walk, wear sensible foot wear - mostly so you don't loose your treasured flip flop into the torrent below! It's not expensive and it's pretty spectacular. Not challenging (unless you're not keen on high suspended walk ways over gorges and rapids!). Can be quite busy and parts get congested and require you wait for your turn to pass.
Bridget W — Google review
Absolutely stunning natural gorge open for 156 years. The footbridge was nicely build since than but with upgrades of course. For non adventurous peraon like me, it's scary to walk on the footbridge but definitely worth going here. Recommend to wear anti-slip shoes and bring less things with you. Ticket is at €6
Joey W — Google review
Absolutely beautiful! Definitely worth the, in my opinion, small entry fee (€6,-). A nice walk through a steep and interestingly shaped gorge, where a narrow deck/bridge, suspended from the side of the wall, takes you along and above the flowing waters at the bottom of the crevices. For most of the route, the walkway is halfway between the top and bottom of the gorge, which gives a impressive view of the worn out stone and swirling river below. Near the end of the route, the walls open up and you get a view from just above the gorge. Looking down, there are many, massive blocks of stone that have sheared of the very walls you're standing on and have tumbled down into the waters. All in all a very impressive sight.

A truly magical place. I returned after two years and it didn't disappoint at all. Ps. look for the magic of the place, faces and creatures can hide in every stone ;)
Vanessa A — Google review
Astonishing natural beauty with a wonderful high ledge walk. Was great that it was raining and quiet. Beautiful place
Matt B — Google review
We had an amazing day there! We stayed in Annecy for a few days, without a car, and decided to go there by public transportation. It took around 1 hour by bus and we had to walk 20min (not an easy path, it was a steep descent which we had to go up after). The experience in Gorges du Fier worth the work to get there, the place is beautiful and it was not full of people, which made our pictures look so nice! There’s a small shop, bar and toilets before entering the park. Our card didn’t work to buy tickets so we paid with cash, keep this in mind because there’s no ATM there. I definitely recommend this visit! It’s totally possible with public transportation and walk but it’s easier by car! ☺️

Abbaye d'Hautecombe is a historic monastery that has served as the burial place for members of the House of Savoy since the 12th century. The stunning architecture and picturesque natural surroundings make it a magnificent place to visit. The interior design features a spectacular blend of Baroque and Neoclassical styles, creating a unique atmosphere. Visitors can explore the abbey with a multilingual audio guide and take in its spiritual ambiance during the 45-minute tour.
Absolutely must see if you are here, take an audio guide and learn about the history of this place. Pity that the garden is closed but you can walk a bit near by to enjoy the abbey view from the water
Katerina K — Google review
Beautiful situated and a very touching church, audio guide.
Mai-Britt L — Google review
Although Hautecombe Abbey was founded in the 12th century by Cistercian monks, it's had a chequered history. Apparently it was even turned into a factory making china and other ceramic goods in the early 19th century. Indeed, most of what's visible today dates from the 19th century. There are a few good alabaster pieces but most of the ornamentation has just been copied from medieval stuff situated elsewhere. Frankly there's not much to see here apart from the chapel. However, the site, on the north-western side of the Lac du Bourget, is pleasant enough. There's a gift shop selling mostly Catholic kitsch but no refreshments. The toilet facilities are awful. One lot were completely shut even though we visited at a peak time (Sunday afternoon). The one that was open was so dingy it was necessary to use the torch light on a mobile phone.
C O — Google review
Mausoleum abbey of the Savoy family, a place steeped in history on the shores of the lake. The heterogeneous reconstruction in terms of styles gives it a special feature, but maintains a beautiful spirituality. The visit goes with multilingual audioguide and takes 45min. The shop offers a lot of local products to buy. Large car parking with shadow.
A G — Google review
Absolutely stunning. The people are friendly and the audio guides are amazing. You can spend a couple of hours here experiencing the calmness and history of this magical Abbaye.
Magda K — Google review
Stunning architecture and amazing nature view around it. This abbaye has been sitting peacefully by the lake since 12th century. Interior design is spectacular. Ceilings and majority of the building are in style of Baroque, a few corners in style of Neoclassicism. There's a entry fee of €4.5. Audio guide device and introduction sheet (option of several languages, which I find it rare in France, very international tourist friendly) are available. Very worthwhile to pay a visit.
Elfin W — Google review
We took the boat trip from Grand Port. We would have liked to visit the church at the Abbey, but there were tour groups who were given priority in front of us, we were ignored by the ticket office and ran out of time.
Barbara O — Google review
Off the beaten path historic abbey with interesting church that contains alls tombs of the Savoy family. The situation on a cliff overlooking the lake is superb, so don’t miss to walk down to the lake pier to photograph the site above the lake as you will not realize it when visiting otherwise. Another nice point of view is from the road that passes a few hundreds meters above the abbey; stop at Belvedere d’Ontex on D914 for an instaworthy shot. Do mind the closing time over lunchtime.

Walibi Rhône-Alpes is an amusement park celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2024 and introducing a new attraction called Mahuka. The park offers 34 attractions, including 24 activities suitable for children over 90 cm. It features three themed areas, 12 dining options, and takeaway points. Visitors praise the friendly staff but note limited open checkouts during promotions. Some suggest providing wheelchairs for those in need and reevaluating ticket prices for kids' escorts.
I love Walibi. Excellent place to spend time with your kids. The only thing that would make it even better would be a place that sells a good coffee.
Sasha J — Google review
Er had a very good time in Walibi Rhone-Alpes. The rides are good. The new ride Mahuka ist awesome. The new water-play area is nicely designed with a lot of nice details. I loved the effort in the details of the new area and ride. The other rides in the park makes also a lot of fun. Only the Show LE POUVOIR DE GAÏA do not fit in the entertainment Level with the park. The actors and stuntman are good in their jobs, but the show and story was for kids. There’s a few nice effects and two major stunts, but that’s all. There’s also a few fight choreographies that I saw in other parks better, and to many chatting. And only one Charakter speaks live. I know that shows with these concept runs better, but the entertainment is suffers under these conditions. And the stage is awesome, there so many options to bring that show to a new level of entertainment with the crew and the stage. Please use the chance. All the Employees, at the entrance, the security, in the Shops and at the attractions are very friendly. The Park was not busy at the day but the employees are fast at the attractions so we had only a few minutes to wait. It is nice to see, that the employees working fast at rollercoasters leading to a high guest throughput. As I said, the show-crew is good, but the show must more entertain adults and must have more action.
R. P — Google review
We visited the park on a mid-week day in August. Overall, it was fun — a bit crowded, but still manageable. Several rides offer a single-rider line, which can significantly reduce wait times. It’s also a good idea to follow the advertised wait times for each ride and plan accordingly. We purchased a ticket that included lunch, which was a nice option and worth it. However, there were a few drawbacks: some rides only open around midday, which is unfortunate, especially on busy days. The weather was hot, but there wasn’t enough shade throughout the park, and there were too few water fountains available for refilling bottles.
Hila — Google review
Nice amusement park with a good variation of attractions. Several attractions for the small children (also a great water play park), and also nice roal coasters for the dare devils.
John R — Google review
Amazing park, extremely high quality coasters. Very friendly staff! The rides are unique and all of them are special and much more intense than the ones at other and bigger theme parks. All of them are unique and you have the possibility to try 3 completely different ride experiences, one of them being an incredibly smooth Vekoma Boomerang.
Nelson C — Google review
As I visited almost 200 theme parks Walibi Rhone-Alpes is one of my all time favorite theme parks. I visited it for the fist time two years back with roller coaster club and I was amazed by everything right after I entered the park. I was curious if my impression will be the same when I travelled alone this time. And it was even better. Very friendly staff was giving me small talk on security check, at Mystic station and even Mahuka station. Just because I was wearing my Walibi Holland T-shirt. The park is not big, everything feels very close. The park does not focuse on quatity or size/scale but on quality which I am a huge fan of. Food is delicious. High dive show is very impressive. Theming around Mahuka and Mystic is phenomenal. This park know where to invest and how to run park well. Parking is included in your admission. Number one park in France. No discussion. Highly recommended. Thank you very much for having me. :)
Dave C — Google review
Walibi Rhône-Alpes is a small but beautiful theme park that has flourished in the past few years. The addition of Mystic in 2019 put this park on the map, and the new for 2024 Mahuka gave it a well-rounded ride lineup. Although this park seems to cater more towards families, you can have a lot of fun here as a thrill seeker. Getting to the park with a car is fine, as long as you don't get stuck with some of the closed roads in the area. Getting here with public transport is seemingly impossible, but the parking is free. The park is clean and tidy and has three little themed areas that you can explore. The theming is not out of this world, but I did really like the uniqueness of the Mystic area. The rides are unexpectedly good. Mystic is smooth and fun, although the wait can get annoying when they run it on one train. Mahuka is amazing fun and also has a great capacity considering the trains only hold 9 people. The baggage system is unconventional, but it worked. I also really liked the offering of the Mahuka pass, which was limited to one per person per day so that everyone could have the chance to experience this ride at least once. The only problem I had with this park was the food. There is a beautiful almost restaurant just outside Mystic and we should have just eaten there. Instead, we got some chicken tenders with fries, and those weren't great. This is still an amazing park, and the low height requirements make it perfect for aspiring thrill seekers. I am excited to see what the future holds for Walibi Rhône-Alpes.
Gerhard — Google review
I recently visited this amusement park, and I have to say it was one of the most disappointing experiences I've ever had. The roller coaster queues were absolutely ridiculous—over 1.5 hours for a ride that lasted only 3 minutes! It's hard to believe that in this day and age, a theme park can't manage its lines better. To make matters worse, we noticed that some of the seats were marked as "disabled," which seemed like a lazy excuse for lack of proper maintenance. It gave the impression that the park is more focused on profits than on providing a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Speaking of profits, the fast track tickets for over €7 per ride felt like an outright scam, exploiting the long wait times instead of addressing the underlying issues. It’s frustrating to see a park take advantage of its visitors like that. When we finally got hungry and decided to grab a bite, the situation only got worse. The lines for the fast food restaurants were just as long—about an hour wait for some of the worst cheeseburgers I've ever had. They were cold, seemed precooked, and honestly tasted like they had been sitting in a fridge for days. I've had better quality food at gas stations! To top it all off, the security personnel were rude and unhelpful when we had a simple question. It was clear that customer service was not a priority for them. Overall, I left the park feeling frustrated and cheated. With such long waits, poor food quality, and a lack of courteous staff, I cannot recommend this amusement park to anyone looking for a fun day out. Save your money and go somewhere that values its guests!

It features a wide array of entertainment options, including 222 slot machines, 6 Game of Thrones interactive slot machines, and 18 electronic English roulette stations. I went to the Grand Cercle Casino at Aix-les-Bains, not long ago to see a musical comedy of Miserables, organized by Aix-les-Bains conservatory and treater school. The interior of the Casino is grandiose, the ceilings magnificent, colorful and gilded. There's also a large statue in the center of the entrance. The auditorium is very pleasant, well laid out, the signs are comfortable and the architecture provides perefctaccoustics. And the staff are very pleasant. A small downside for the parking, where you couldn't longer pay by card, which seems to be a recurring problem ... But I recommend it !
Rachel D — Google review
The building itself is beautiful but it hasn't been helped by it now being a casino
Paul D — Google review
This was the first casino I’ve been inside - I was more interested in seeing the inside of the building which I think is 200 years old and the ceilings are very ornate and lovely architecture in this old building. Did think it was spoiled a bit by all the flashing lights of the electronic machines - they weren’t particularly exciting from my perspective but quite a few people sitting there just constantly hitting buttons to play the machines. You did need a passport to get in (or other national identity document - dont think driving licence counts).. Worthwhile to see inside, but if you’re not into gambling could easily be in and out in 10 mins.
Craig S — Google review
Nice ambience and the hall has an impressive ceiling. Finding parking was a mission possibly being the weekend. A bit too crowded for my liking as at one stage, it was difficult to find a place at virtual roulette machines. I did not check out the lounge which looked posh and quite well stocked. The drink choice at the small bar however was very limited.
