Museums
The Castle of Suze-la-Rousse is a magnificent medieval fortress that was once a military stronghold and later transformed into a family residence with a stunning courtyard. Since 1978, it has been home to the renowned University of Wine and also hosts cultural events and concerts. Visitors can explore the castle's expansive grounds, including an ancient court showcasing one of the earliest versions of tennis. The well-preserved chateau features exhibits highlighting its historical evolution over the centuries, including an impressive display of authentic artifacts.
An interesting place, we had a guided tour. The castle is now exceptionally big, but it was interesting to hear how the game of tennis developed and there is an ancient court of one of the first versions of the game to see, besides a small exhibition. The park is also nice and it is easy to get to the castle, with a nearby parking. The town, on the contrary, is rather deserted.
Monica P — Google review
That’s a nice castle but the exhibition itself was not so impressive as I expected. However I was extremely impressed by the history of wine presented as well as the wine institute. So it’s more for wine fans.
Kirill M — Google review
Lovely Castle of architectural interest but rooms are quite empty, not decorated as a residence. There are guided tours possibly only in French.
Sam P — Google review
I got to visit it with the family, we had a good time. Not the best castle I would say, but definitely worth the visit. It has a big garden for the kids
Andrés P — Google review
A very nice chateau. Very well conserved which shows the changes made over the centuries and with a nice exhibition of the real jeu de paume. A bit different how we nowadays play a game of.tennis.a lot of authentic pieces are displayed.
Willem S — Google review
The château was very nice. The guided tour was well worth it. The lady knew many fun facts. The place was well restored as well. The grounds were also nice to take a walk and enjoy a picnic. Super visit

Beautiful castle with amazing views. It hosts a wine university which makes the ramparts inaccessible. Definitely get the audio guide. Free parking.

(Translated by Google) Highly recommended! Fun and challenging course with fantastic views. The safety technique took some getting used to, but after that it went smoothly (and above all, very safe). I climbed with two kids (ages 9 and 13). We did the blue, red, and brown courses together. Brown was challenging, especially for the youngest, age 9. I also did the black and the long zipline with the oldest, age 13. Black is definitely challenging. It was great that height was never an issue for the kids. They could easily reach everything. (Book in advance and pay in cash) (Original) Aanrader! Zwart is zeker uitdagend. Fijn dat lengte nooit problemen gaf met de kids. Ze konden overal goed bij. (reserveer van tevoren en betaal contant)

(Translated by Google) A beautiful course in a stunning setting. At the beginning, you'll receive a clear introduction to the green course. The blue and red courses were easy to do. The brown course is for the more daring. I didn't do the black course. At the end, you can do a long zipline with a beautiful view of the valley. Please note: There are no food or drink options nearby. There are also no restrooms.

(Translated by Google) Even after a reservation we were sent home because the staff was going to be on lunch break about fifteen minutes later, which is more than enough time to welcome customers, implying that there was no time to take care of us. A few minutes later we saw a group of people getting into the bodriés. In addition, the welcome was really not warm and appropriate; we were treated as unwelcome from the start.

Aven d'Orgnac is a remarkable prehistoric cave located in France, offering visitors the chance to explore a magical subterranean world filled with stunning stalagmites and stalactites. Additionally, there is a modern museum showcasing prehistoric artifacts for those interested in history. Visitors can expect a cool temperature of 12°C (53.
Love this place... admire the miracle created by nature over millions of years...our guide was informative and very hilarious, the prehistoric museum was one of the best...we attended the mysterious chest guided tour, lots of fun! We strongly recommend especially for the children.
Siming — Google review
A surprise delight. Most of the tour is a descent on stairs and walking through large cavernous rooms with fantastic structures. The end is a spectacle and an elevator ride back to the surface. Some familiar structures seen in other caves, but a few new ones. The scale is grand. Well worth a visit.
Andy K — Google review
The Aven is one of the official grand sites in France and as I consider definitely deserved. The whole venue is arranged greatly and the cave ... Which isn't a cafe but an Aven, since it has no horizontal access ... Is definitely one of the greater caves you can easily access and I visited most of the regions caves. It's wonderful and impressive. Has incredible unique features and it's a 121 meter deep journey into another age. You go more than 700 steps down and this takes already an hour with not too much time to marvel over these natural wonders. The tour is usually good and there are English ones available. Since the CO2 levels rise with the depth and tire people and make the climb up longer and exhausting, to protect the cave an elevator was installed that brings you back rapidly and without the typical exhausting experience of a deep limestone cave. If you are here, this is a must see
Frank B — Google review
We had an amazing visit here on a hot day. The site is quite large, and houses the aven, a museum and some outdoor activities. We did the guided English tour. Our guide, Gabriel, was the best. Really enthousiastic and knowledgable. He actually was a real joker and made the whole tour through the aven really fun. He was also willing to answer any questions and did so with humor and fun facts. Gabriel made the visit very worth while. The aven itself was very impressive and huge inside with beautiful stalactites and stalacmites. It went some 120m deep and it is also possible to do some spelunking and visit deeper parts of the aven. Parking is readily available and free, with a clean toilet facility. The site is easy to reach from Vallon pont D'arc and, some 20 to 25 minute drive. Charging electric vehicles is also possible, but we did not use that. Really recommended to visit!
Erik N — Google review
Fantastic experience. Definitely look around the museum and then cool off down in the aven. Bring a jumper and shoes with good grip.
Louis H — Google review
Wonderful caves and tour. Very well organised and able to book a tour in English which was a bonus. The caves are huge and beautifully lit. The history and story of their discovery are well presented. It's an easy pace tour, lots of steps but all down finishing with a lift back to the top. Wonderful show to conclude the tour. After the caves, the museum of ancient history is also great.
David — Google review
Visited here when I was 7 months pregnant thinking that it would be difficult but turns out its fine and great visit! To go up there was a lift so it was nice! The guide also very detailed. Recommended places to visit.
Intan C — Google review
Venturing into the Aven d'Orgnac cave is a captivating experience that I highly recommend. Nestled within the earth, this natural wonder is not only a visual feast but also a testament to the beauty of our planet's history. The cave, while awe-inspiring, does carry the chill of the deep underground, so remember to bring a warm jacket and gloves to stay comfortable. The light show within the cave is nothing short of magical, illuminating the ancient formations in a dance of shadows and light that is sure to leave you enchanted. It's important to note that the cave can only be explored through a guided tour. However, due to its popularity, tours can get fully booked, so you might have to wait for the next available session.

Grotte de la Madeleine

Grotte de la Madeleine is a stunning cliffside cave located about 7 kilometers south of Saint-Remeze, nestled in the lush Ardeche Canyon near the Ardeche River. Discovered in 1887, this 500-meter-long dripstone cave offers distinctive rock formations and features captivating sound and light shows, along with guided tours. Visitors can enjoy multilingual audio guides during the tours.
A few things to be aware of but the attraction itself is brilliantly done! There are a lot of steps so those with poor mobility will find it challenging. The tour is in French but you get a translation device thats about the size of a mobile phone to carry and there are well posted signs which tell you which recoding to listen to. The cave is just fascinating especially if you like geology. Parking, the welcome and the fact we didn’t need to books was great. It’s not the cheapest activity for an hour or so tour, but a lot of that money spent goes on the upkeep of such a fab place. Think of more of a contribution.
Matt R — Google review
Beautiful cave and friendly guides. We visited on Sunday July 7th. The tour lasted for about an hour. Price is €14 per person. If you want to spend it, I would recommend it. The tour is in French, but when purchasing the tickets you can get a free audiotour in various languages. This helps you understand most of what is explained by the guide. Parking was not a problem for us, but we visited just before the national holidays.
Mike R — Google review
Very spectacular, well worth visiting. Note that there are lots of stairs, some of them are steep. The cafe does excellent sandwiches. The other food looked good too.
Rob L — Google review
We visited in July and they had two guided tours per hour. There were no line and after buying the tickets we only had to wait 20 minutes for the next tour. If you don’t speak French they give you a small speaker with the whole tour in your own language. This worked very well, only we were not aware that we should have listened to number 1 before going into the cave. The tour was interesting and the small light and music show was very nice as well. Beware that there are a lot of steep and slippery steps in the cave, so use proper footwear. The cave was beautiful and absolutely worth the visit.
Maiken H — Google review
Amazing caves! Is was an interesting and beautiful trip down the cave. Unfortunately, like most french tourist places the guide didn't speak English.
Michael S — Google review
Beautiful caves that are well worth the visit. Take an audio guide no matter what language you speak, even French. The guided tour was impossible to hear and we were constantly overrun by other groups in the cave. There were too many groups and the group's were too big for the tour guide to be able to effectively talk to. With an audio guide you will receive muchh more information and a better experience.
Clinton P — Google review
Not really worth the walk down and obs back up hill again to be honest
Diana M — Google review
This is a nice cave near Saint-Remèze. There is a good organisation and the guide was very nice. Inside is a light show, outside is a gifts store, a kind of bar and toilets. It's very helpful to speak French.

Wow! We booked canyoning and it was fantastic, easy booking, brilliant follow up emails, warm welcome and an outstanding guide Jerome. We loved every second of it and so professional.

We visited this park as a family of 5 with three kids. The youngest of 5 had its own low-level parc ours whereas the older kids could wonder in the tree circuit. Despite the summer time, we we didn’t find it crowded and we were happy to enjoy a drink of combucha at the terrace. Next time we’ll be back to enjoy some other activities. Great animators that were really customer oriented, speaking French and English.

Person at the reception was not professional and not polite. We were asked to wait and were offered a free coffee. We never received this. 3 times the administration was wrong (wrong name, wrong email). We had to go back to the reception to verify. Also the reception is not covid save (employer is not using a mask and is not behind a protective screen). Visitors are not asked to use a mask and save distance is not the case. I had to point this out but this feedback was cleary not appreciated. Cleary the reception is also understaffed.

We had a fantastic canyoning experience with very professional guides. From the 12 canyons we choose: le rio sourd, Le Beton and le Claps which all three were very varied; a lot of rappelling , jumping and sliding. The adventure park was also very professional with various parcours. If you stay near DIE this park is a must !

Crest Tower

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Crest Tower is an imposing hilltop structure with a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages. It served as a national prison, earning the nickname "Southern Bastille" and operated until 1851. Visitors can embark on a fascinating journey through cobblestoned alleyways, tunnels, and sunlit paths to reach the tower gates. The interior features intricate wooden doors, breathtaking views, and rooms that offer insight into the lives of past inhabitants.
Amazing place. Better than expected! Of course the view from the top terrace is stunning, but getting up there is a total exploratory adventure in itself. The kid in all of us will be VERY satisfied here!

We didn't plan on visiting as we were just passoing through Crest, but this tower is amazing. A must-do for the architecture, views and guided tour with audiophone and scenography. Bucolic walk up through cobbled alleys and a wide staircase carved into the rock.
Kirstin C — Google review
Very good surprise. A very pleasant visit for the whole family. Don't hesitate to wait for the guided tours. A travel into the history of the valley. And a very good view on it if you go to the top.
Jean-Marc L — Google review
Very interestingand the views are amazi ng. The English audio program could be improved with additional details about the cityand the building of the tower. If you are in area, like history and engineering, it's well worth a visit.
Angela W — Google review
We parked at the bottom of the old village and miandered all the way up the cobblestoned alleyways and paths, through tunnels and past cats warming themselves in sunfilled window ledges. Clearly marked from most avenues, we easily found Tour de Crest and continued up the steep incline to the tower gates. With every step we took, there was another incredible gate, intricate wooden door, spectacular view, and room after room that evoked attempts at imagining the lives of those who inhabited these spaces. We climbed the secret staircase in the Lord's bedroom all the way up to a now, covered terraced/courtyard used for catching rain and feeding it directly into the well (cistern) in the entrance level of the tower. It used to be open, but after the seams began to take water the concave V shaped roof was added to collect rainwater but protect the tower from water damage. From this magical room, we continued upward through another whimsical, narrow staircase to the summit of the tower with a view that summons our inner, open-armed spin, mostly known to occur in open fields in the Swiss alps. I will leave you here, to descend the tower and discover the magic within these walls. An excellent feature of the visit was the addition of an app called IZI which allowed us to tour the castle with an English virtual tour guide, explaining each feature from doors you may not have noticed, carvings, drawing by prisoners etched I to the walls etc. Excellent addition.

Visited in September for the tour and tasting. A lot of work has gone into making the tour interesting and engaging it was much more interesting than expected though it’s historic and not about making their wines today. Delicious wines to taste, some not available in supermarkets, so you get to take away their very best wines with some good value offers. We bought 3 half cases and the really good 3€ Jaillance bottle stoppers keep the wine fresh and sparkling in the fridge. All the staff were friendly and helpful to make sure you enjoy your visit. Maybe Jaillance could give a free bottle stopper with the tour as a souvenir of an interesting and tasty experience, that may also encourage people to buy wines to use it, we had to ask if they can be purchased. A more expensive high quality version of the stopper would make a great gift with any bottle of the superb wines.
Stuart C — Google review
Jaillance offers a nice tour in multiple languages. Etienne offered a tour in Dutch, which he did fabulously. He's a real gem, a great guide and happily answers all the questions you might have, both during the tour and the tasting afterwards. It's not my kind of wine, but very typical for the region so it's nice to try out and learn a bit about its origins and production. It takes approximately an hour for the tour and tasting combined. We tasted four wines. Very reasonable for the €5,- entry fee.

Unfortunately didn't get to see the museum, because on that day it was closed for maintenance. But we had a lot of fun tasting, thanks to the young man who welcomed us. There's lot's of great wines at reasonable prices. Will definitely comes back again!

We went on a small tour and learned the history of Clairette de Die. The tour was guided and with videos using a “phone” (provided) in our language. After the tour, we tasted a couple of their wines and bought some.
Tim B — Google review
Caveau Jaillence is a cooperative wine cellar. There specialties are clairette de Die, à sparkling and refreshing wine with a delicate mucat taste and a relatively low alcohol content, and the crémant de Die, a dry sparkling white. They also sell a large selection of still wines, red white and rosé, from all over the region, as well as other regional produce. The prémisses include an interesting wine museum.... Enjoy
Daniel C — Google review
We tasted different sparking wines. They have different sparkling wines from sweet to dry. At the shop you can then buy their wines.

Beautiful small zoo with big surprises. One should plan all afternoon and make sure not to miss the last show of the day with the owls and eagles. Great value for families.
Constantin — Google review
First of all, this place can better be called a bird park. It is a pretty nice place to visit. But to be real. It has like 80% bird from ostrich to flamingo to parrots. The few non-birds are lama's, a bull, some turtles and a small patting zoo. They did make a special cage/place for monkeys and koalas ,but at the moment I visited the place they where not there yet
Stan G — Google review
Liked the parc, loved the bird show. Well, I only saw the predatory bird show and it was way better than I'd hoped. The parc is small, efficient, clean lavatories. Kids until about 14 yrs will like it.
Funke E — Google review
It's a small zoo with mostly different birds and turtles. The rest of the animals are not special. Bird zoo would be a better name. My 2 young kids 2 and 4 years old were bored fast because of that. There is also a petting zoo but most animals are behind fences. Lots of room to sit and picnic, and toilets and the zoo is super clean.
Paco S — Google review
Bigger than expected, but maintenance is an issue. Great to see the many birds; we as a family spent a good four hours here after which the kids were bored out. The animal lodgings look somewhat derelict though. Building new shelters, when really the old ones desperately need repairs first. Small ‘snack’ with food, drinks and ice cream at reasonable prices. Shows all in French which is understandable. The educational comments kind of ramble on though which makes the shows tedious for (non-understanding) foreign children. All together: better than expected destination to spend a day with the kids!
Ewoud E — Google review
Nice zoo. The funky birds, crazy sheeps, frightened surikatas, and some amphibians spent 2 hours here with us. It's definitely worth stopping by.

Les maisons suspendues de Pont-en-Royans

Les maisons suspendues de Pont-en-Royans are a sight to behold in the small town of Pont-en-Royans, located on the Bourne river in the southern part of the Isere department, France. This picturesque town is situated at the edge of the Vercors Natural Regional Parc and has gained attention as a filming location for various productions. Visitors have described it as a hidden gem with medieval charm and clear, cold river water perfect for picnics and swimming.
We made a short stop here on our road trip in France to see the colorful hanging houses. It was well worth the detour. The town was deserted on the Thursday morning that we visited in March and it was easy to find a parking spot on Grande Rue, just east of the suspended houses. We made a short walk down to the river and read the informational signs that were translated in English.

Gorgeous village! Definitely worth a visit! Enjoy the water and park like setting on a warm day and it will feel unreal in the best kind of way!

Really cute little hidden gem of a small town in the French countryside. Stayed in a Airbnb with a great view of the town. It's well worth a visit, if you are in the area
Oeyvind A — Google review
We loved Pont et Royans. It's a little hidden jem in the mountains and still has so much medieval charm. The water in the river was so clear and cold. Lovely place for a picnic and a swim but alot of wasps too. Loved the natural pools which are below the little waterfall. Take time out to visit it, you will love it! ❤️
Katie M — Google review
Nice walk along the river and then up through the village. Helpful notices about the village along the way. Some of the houses clearly defy physics. I gave this 5 stars because there were only a few other people walking around the day we were there, and it was very enjoyable. But it is a small, tight road, and I could see this place becoming too crowded very easily.
S H — Google review
Great place to visit in the mountains. Good to know that there are barely few places to eat and drink. I visited this place in Octobre, it was calm and serene

A very beautiful place with a special spirit. On Saturday noon/afternoon at the end of September (short walk with friends) the park was almost empty.

I went to Pont-en-Royans to see the water flowing through the village...it’s really cool! The way the river runs right under the old houses is something you don’t see every day. The water moves fast and looks super fresh and clean. It’s a nice spot to just relax and watch the flow, listen to the sounds, and enjoy the calm vibe. The village itself is small but pretty, with some nice spots to sit by the water. Parking is close by and easy to find if you’re not there on a busy weekend. Overall, a great place to hang out for a while and enjoy nature right in the middle of a beautiful little town.

Disappointing! Almost everything is written or spoken in French. No other languages, translations or subtitles available. Within 1 hour you have seen it all. During our visit it was not possible to taste the water. You better spent your time along the river side or in the village. The view is beautifull and the river is refreshing. Bring you water shoes 😜

The museum offers an engaging audio tour that provides practical and knowledgeable insights into the history of shoes, making it an interesting experience for both shoe enthusiasts and those with a general interest in history. Visitors can explore exhibits ranging from stone shoes to various fashion trends, offering a comprehensive journey through the evolution of footwear. The museum also features beautiful gardens outside and entertaining videos that showcase different era outfits.
Great museum, I never thought I would enjoy it that much. Techniques, collections, machines, history… you have it all. Took us almost 2 hours to go around. Lots to see and learn. Don’t miss it!
Marie-Eve L — Google review
A quirky museum in a beautifully restored convent. The audio guide is fabulous and the huge range of shoes and footwear from across the centuries is unique. Staff are welcoming - allow at least a couple of hours to browse and listen and look.
Malcolm R — Google review
Amazing building and museum fascinating history for both with a close study of the world at ground level so to speak😜, audio tour is practical, knowledgeable and interesting kept us all absorbed throughout. You don't even really have to be interested in shoes as the historical references tie the timeline together nicely and leaves your imagination engaged to the story couldn't recommend this place highly enough not forgetting the giant shoe trail around the town🤗❤️🇫🇷

If you love history and shoes, this is the place for you! It's pretty awesome to see shoes from different era and countries. Audio guide available in English. Toilets and water station right after the ticket booth. Don't need to check anything in but lockers are available. Beautiful gardens outside as well. Love the video at the end that dresses a man and woman in different era outfits. Very entertaining. Highly recommend.
Anthony C — Google review
What fun! Even for those in our party who weren't all that interested in shoes! I opted for the audio tour because we didn't have a lot of time and it's faster than reading all of the history but not as thorough, I imagine. Complete tour, starting with stone shoes, tanning and coloring leather, through to sooo many fashions over the years and their influences. Need 2 hours to complete even at a fast pace and I'm sure I didn't get to see everything.
Kim M — Google review
Even as a bloke, I found this interesting and my wife loved it. We managed to spend 2 hours there, including the Resistance Museum. The history of shoes is shown up to fairly recent times, with some remarkable examples from Egypt and medieval times. There are also exhibits from outside Europe. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Marques Avenue Romans is a local shopping outlet featuring major brands at discounted prices. The area also offers a glimpse of Renaissance mansions and elegant medieval houses. Visitors can explore various stores, including both well-known and lesser-known brands, with varying discounts. Parking is convenient, and there are options for dining as well. While the space may be tight, it's recommended to take time to stroll around the area without rushing.
Amazing place. Great place to shop and to hang out too.

Nice outlet center. Lots of different shops with also for us (Dutchies) some unknown brands. But also the usual suspects Nike, Adidas, Puma aso. Discounts differ a lot per shop so have a good look. But we Dutchies got some good bargains haha. Parking is easy in the middle of the area. Good for a rainy day when you are on holiday at the camping.
J L — Google review
My recent day trip to Romans-sur-Isère was a delightful journey through time and style. This town, with its echoes of Roman history whispering through ancient streets and the imposing Tour Jacquemart standing sentinel, truly captivated me. Imagine wandering past centuries-old buildings, each stone telling a silent story....(2025, not at all this) But the allure of Romans doesn't end in the past. Just a short, pleasant hop from the historical heart lies Marques Avenue, a modern oasis for the discerning shopper. Stepping into this well-curated outlet village felt like entering a different world – a world of coveted brands offering their treasures at irresistible high prices. (Not impressive!) The beauty of this location is the seamless blend of these two experiences. You can easily spend the morning immersed in history at the Musée International de la Chaussure (a must-visit, even if you're not a shoe fanatic!) and then, with a change of pace, indulge in some guilt-free retail therapy. (not for me) I found myself browsing through collections from renowned French and international designers, discovering quality pieces that added a touch of je ne sais quoi to my wardrobe without breaking the bank. My Highlight: Finding four nike running shoes at a fraction of its original price! Planning Your Visit: Make a day of it! Start with a stroll through the historic center, savor a traditional Lyonnaise lunch at a local bouchon, and then head to Marques Avenue for an afternoon of delightful discoveries.🥐 The contrast between the old-world charm and the contemporary shopping experience is truly unique. And now why not you? Go see for yourself how beautiful this complex is. 🙏🏻👋

Always worth taking your time to walk around Marques Avenue. Don't rush ! I would advise parking outside the main area now as space is very tight and not any spots. Lots of cheap parking just outside which you can pay for by credit card or on an app.

Lots of different stores, and easy to find your find the one you're looking for. We weren't aware that it is an outside mall, so we didn't bring jackets. Big regrets, because it was raining that day. We ate in a pizza place where there were heating lamps, which was super nice, but all of a sudden, the staff just shut the off and refused to turn them on again, despite their guests freezing.
Minna M — Google review

Le Palais Idéal du Facteur Cheval, or the Ideal palace of postman Cheval. This place is a hidden gem of the art i like. Do you like Escher, Dali, and Gaudi? Then you will enjoy this 'Palace'. (Translated by Google) Nice new place (last time I went they were in St Julien Molin Molette). Interesting mini museum before accessing the demonstration room (several hours during the holidays - see their website). The procedure is very well explained. My 4-year-old son was fascinated. Then we saw the production and bagging rooms behind the windows and back in the shop. Very large parking lot. Everything is free, but with the tasting in the shop, we're in love 🤤 Their marshmallows are excellent, as is the crepe dentelle spread. I recommend going when there's a demonstration, even if there's a video when there isn't one. All the staff are very welcoming and helpful. Thank you.

(Translated by Google) Delicious artisanal confectionery. I came here twice in one week while on vacation in the area. The downside is the young ladies at reception and at the checkout who have no business or hospitality skills.... Yesterday I bought over 50 euros worth of merchandise and 25 euros a few days earlier. Yesterday, when I asked if it was possible to taste a fruit paste or marshmallow to discover, I was told "we don't have time to restock," but the restocking bins are right under the reception desk! What a shame... This factory really deserves a better team in its shop. When we left, we didn't get a "Thank you" or "Goodbye"!

(Translated by Google) First encounter with the Jouvenal chocolate shop/pastry shop. We first tried the cake. A chocolate cake encased in a vanilla cream. A wonderful combination of flavors. Not too sweet, just how we like pastries. A quality chocolate that's too rarely found in pastry shops. The price seemed very high considering the size of the cake. Then we tried a chocolate and orange peel marmalade cake, with combinations that reminded me of a cake from the chocolatier Bochard when he worked in pastry shops. We were rather disappointed with our experience. The cake is very sweet. The biscuit on the top of the cake doesn't add much in terms of texture. The chocolate part is very good. So why 3 stars... and not 4 or 5, because at this price point, I think I've found something very tasty. We'll be back because we have no doubt about this business's commitment to delighting us.

If visiting these buildings I strongly recommend to take guided tour. It provides great understanding of the circumstances when the buildings were made and also a lot of interesting details in them.

Vienne Ancient Roman Theatre

Mentioned on
1 list
Historical landmark
Concerts & Shows
Vienne Ancient Roman Theatre is a well-preserved stone-built theater dating back to around 40 AD, making it one of the largest in Roman Gaul. With a seating capacity of 13,000 spectators, it hosts live music and dance performances during the summer. The theater remained hidden until its rediscovery in 1908. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the city from this ancient site and even catch a jazz concert. Climbing to the top offers both a great workout and stunning vistas.
The place itself is really magical. Was there for a concert and honestly sunset and music in this scenery was just perfect. Not to mention the obvious top notch sound quality even far up. Everything was easily accessible and the organisers really did a good job of allocating the space. Loved every second of the show 😻

Great Jazz Festival 2025. Went to see Parov Stellar. A little hot due to the heat wave - take water and a hat.

Ale to see Avenged Sevenfold. Probs the best organised outdoor arena in France. Queue moved along with no hassle. Security did a banging job and the Lyonnaise sausage hot dog was delicious. Good beer too. What’s not to love.

Very interesting Roman theatre with great views from the top out over Vienne. Only €3 entry fee & well worth the visit.

Fantastique venue for jazz festival "Jazz a Vienne". Superb location and acoustics, logistics are great with great beers, local food (fries with goat cheese sauce 😍), also great ice creams (chartreuse, banane flambée...), with a very smart setup so that you barely have to wait to get drinks or food. Love it all the way

Beautiful area, short lines to get food and drinks, epic acoustics.

Very historic site we viewed from above at the Pipet. It is well worth a visit as it is not expensive. The stage is used for world renowned Vienne Jazz festival at the end June every year

Great amphitheatre, most of the terracing has been rebuilt in 1920's to give people an understanding of how great it was. Well worth a visit. Still used today for concerts.

History Museums
Musée et sites archéologiques de Saint-Romain-en-Gal in Département du Rhône offers a rich archaeological heritage, showcasing Ancient Roman life. The museum consists of an indoor exhibition and an outdoor excavation site. The indoor exhibition features a comprehensive audio guide providing insights into Ancient Vienne, along with large mosaics. On the other hand, the outdoor area allows visitors to explore extensive excavated ruins, offering a glimpse into the lives of wealthy Romans.
Lovely museum with great mosaics plus extensive outdoor ruins. Nice staff. A manageable size to see in 1-2 hours. Audio guides in English available and included in the modest ticket price.
David S — Google review
Lots of interesting artifacts in the museum and interesting ruins in the surrounding grounds. Probably allow 2-3 hrs minimum but could easily have spent longer. Free audio guide covered inside and out. Helpful staff. Toilets and at least in the 2 outside 'picnic points' the was free drinking water
Neil F — Google review
Overall a nice museum with especially interesting floor mosaics that are in very good shape. A big collection of tools for day to day usage in Roman households. There's free english audio guides but not English written explanations (only French). The outside ruins are less interesting.
Stijn F — Google review
A total wow!! The French really know how to honor the past. Beautifully laid out with superb explanations plus a free audio guide. It is staggering to learn the museum was built on the remains of a Roman city. Thank you Vienne for preserving this ancient treasure (s).
Maggie B — Google review
There are 2 elements to this museum: (1) The indoor exhibition, (2) Outdoor excavation site. (1) Do pick up the audio guide it provides a vastly comprehensive story of the exhibition and paints the story of Ancient Vienne. Do not forget to go up the stairs to see the large mosaic! (2) A very vast excavated area with plenty to see! With a little imagination the lives and living of the wealthy Romans really comes to life here. Overall a fantastic Museum, 11/10 would recommend! Estimated time needed: 3-4hrs (With audio guide)
Joel L — Google review
Excellent outdoor site and inside museum. Especially appreciated the live water features. If you love Roman mosaics, this is your place. Two suggestions. One, they should tell you the audiogiude covers both inside and outside. Also, a locker would be better than their checkin system. Closed toed shoes for outside better.
S. K — Google review
Two part museum, one traditional inside part and then the actual ruins outside the museum. The inside part is housed in a modern spacious building, many beautiful mosaics but not so many other items. Many of the signs are in French only which is a bit of a shame (says the English spoken 😉). There is an optional audioguide though. The outside part was my favourite - fantastic feeling to walk along the old roads and think about the similarities between then and now. Many of the signs where a bit weathered and not the easiest to read though, but again an audioguide is available - but I prefer to have my hands free and rather read then listen. Plenty of staff and security people on the site - almost to many... but all friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit

Wildlife park keeping primates, from chimps to gorillas, plus big cats, birds & reptiles.
A wonderful day spent at the ZOO. Lots of exotic animals, some of which you can even walk among - birds. As you can see, part of the park will be expanded and the area will increase. The animals have very nicely decorated habitats with enough space. Inside the garden there is a snack bar and a souvenir shop. Very well stocked. Definitely an unforgettable day with pleasant memories.
Tadej B — Google review
I have mixed feelings about zoos, I went because my company organized a visit. First time in my life I've been in the presence of a gorilla, no more than a few meters away. First time I've seen a gorilla eating fruits and.... yogurt? This gorilla was being hand fed by the owner of this zoo, Mr. Pierre, he was feeding her inside her room it was fascinating to see. First time I've seen a lion run firsthand, and very upclose. And last but not least, first time I've heard a group of 10+ chimpanzees quarreling, calling out and "screaming". This zoo gave me a sense of humbleness and some sort of primal fear I've never felt before. It made me realize how majestic and imposing these animals can be, yet how beautiful they are too. I liked the back story too. I hope they are truly living up to their mission. I'm still thinking about what I saw.

Very nice zoo! The zoo was larger than I expected and had a nice range of animals. I really enjoyed seeing the Sun Bears and all of the monkeys.
Samantha E — Google review
What a great zoo. Never seen so many active animals at a zoo before. The tigers and lions were magnificent and playing with each other rather than just sleeping or pacing. Good close up viewing with all the animals. Also it's obvious that the zoo is expanding their enclosure space so it'll be interesting to see what it looks like the next time we return. Well worth the entrance fee and we will definitely return when we are in this area.
Paul H — Google review
Good zoo close by Lyon. The zoo offers some great species of animals, but I think the price is too high. You can spend a couple of hours here, but the park is small and completed within 2 hours. We missed a bunch of animals, despite taking the time to spend extra time in the park after finishing the route. We missed the coatis, servals, binturongs, dingos and some more. Very poor habitats for some animals and some animals did not seem to have any space, like the ocelots. We did really enjoy seeing the snow leopards and the arctic wolves. The park smells bad in a lot of places and the hygiene in the toilets is just bad. For such a price we expected clean toilets somewhere, but it was very poorly maintained. Parking is free. €18,50 is too much in this case, but it’s not a total waste. Hopefully it is being used for future wellbeing of the animals.
Yurivdb — Google review
Beautiful clean zoo, animals are well looked after, very reasonably priced... Great day out
Joanne S — Google review
Conservation focused zoo with quite a lot of interesting primate exhibits (amongst a lot of other types of animals). Big enough that you can spend a few hours here but also not so big that it has to take up your entire day. The zoo is positioned up a hill so there is some elevation change during your walk through but the park is entirely accessible (wheelchairs of course, but that means also strollers too Mamas… even enough room through entrances and pathways for huge American double strollers). And the layout of the enclosures up the hill allows for really good viewing of the animals in their enclosures.

Shopping
"The Village Outlet" is a shopper's haven located just 30 minutes from Lyon, France. It offers a wide range of fashion, sports, design, and cosmetic brands at discounted prices. The outlet features ample parking and various dining options. Visitors recommend arriving in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy a convenient shopping experience. Additionally, it provides interactive maps and seating areas for convenience.
We had a great day at the Village Outlet, easily 7-8 hours. There's a comprehensive variety of shops, with many of the key brands (both on the middle and higher end), so there's something for everyone. Outlet prices are rather compelling at most shops. A good tip would be to shortlist items first and make an entire round across all shops before making an informed purchase, to ensure you've gotten the best deal possible across all stores. It's a short 1.4km walk to and from the train station, which is more predictable. Do note that the train towards Lyon city centre is hourly, so time your departure from the outlet accordingly.

Very nice and big outlet shopping place, about 40 minutes from Lyon center by train , they have many good brands, coffee shops and restaurants, the prices are very reasonable..it does worth a visit.

Outlet Mall 40 Min from Lyon center Nice mall open area Parking free available Many brand in average price Also restaurants is available
Yazan Q — Google review
The prices are not the best, can find cheaper prices at Printemp with the sales! The service is good, mid range items. But I find the place poorly designed, poor wifi coverage and data doesn’t have signal inside the shops. Can’t find the reception for tax refund. Not tourist friendly. Mainly French crowd. Would I come back? Maybe. With better signage. They should consider hourly shuttle from the train station to make it more accessible. A notch lower than the other established outlets in Europe. If only prices can be cheaper by 10-20%, then it would be worth it.
Boon T — Google review
Great outlet, one of the best I have been to so far. It’s pretty small for an outlet but had a lot of good options for winter clothes and ski clothes in particular. They have an interactive map stands and a lot of places to seat. There is a big food court as well. Commute form Lyon is not super convenient (it’s a 20 mins walk from the station if you don’t have a car) but it’s expected for an outlet
Alexey S — Google review
nice place, enough shops, diverse shops, clean
I S — Google review
This opinion is dedicated to the reception only, and implies only my own point of view. The woman receptionist (the oldest one) is very rude. She is supposed to represent the whole mall center but she doesn’t have any skills in communication and quality of service. Her way of speaking to customers is very direct, before even introducing your question, she does find problems and say things like «  ah non non non on ne fait pas ça ici » /«  no no no we don’t do that here ». She is not helpful nor nice to people. She really needs to be trained in serving customers or find another job that fits her. We come often to The Village but going through the detax service is a real pain… she is very hasty, I really can’t understand why she is at the reception desk
Shrimp — Google review
Amazing shopping mall! Overpriced and impractical. My young adult daughter only found one store with somewhat reasonably-priced clothing. The fountain show with music was beautiful and the mall is clean and gorgeous.

The Musée des Confluences, located in Lyon, is a striking modern museum that opened in December 2014. It boasts a futuristic architectural design and is situated at the confluence of the Rhone and Saone rivers. The museum features both permanent and temporary exhibitions that delve into anthropology, natural science, and human history. Its iconic structure resembles a transparent crystal cloud made of stainless steel and glass.
Really nice museum! The building itself is impressive and easy to navigate, so you don’t feel lost while walking around. Exhibits are well organised, interactive, and fun — I especially liked the audio parts and the buttons to press. The themes are diverse, from Darwin’s evolution to marine biology and astronomy, so there’s something for everyone. Most of the info is in French and English (though some videos are only French). The architecture is stunning, and the view from the 4th floor is a nice bonus. Definitely worth a visit!

very intresting and informative visit. All the exbits well explained in French and English. the building itself is cool. Do go to the 4th floor and admire the views. They had a information set on my name and saint i was named after
Damian B — Google review
This might be one of the best modern museums I went to, really! It's very complete and I think kids would love it- there were a lot of enthusiastic ones when we went, at least. Their permanent expositions are very well detailed and easy to navigate, they're mostly about natural history, anthropology and culture, not much art history, or at least I didn't find one. Everything has french and english explications. On the entrance to each permanent exposition, there was a guide who would give a general feel of the pieces, and they could speak English too! Their temporary expositions were interesting and very well done, we went to the Amazon and the dreams ones, both very interesting. We didn't have to pay extra for these. They had elevators for all stages, and there were a lot of audio explanations too. On the terrace there was a lovely - albeit a bit expensive - cafe, with nice views. If you're not hungry, the terrace is included on the ticket price anyway, so you should go at least for the view. A must see in Lyon, for sure!

Amazing exhibitions. This was my second time here and it felt like the first. Thoughtfully arranged and curated museum perfect for all ages. The current Zombies exhibition is one of a kind.
Zsolt B — Google review
Interesting permanent and temporary exhibitions with lots of interactive elements - especially liked the Species wing of the permanent exhibits. Ticket price was reasonable (12 Euros) and the 4th floor outside terrace views are worth the price of admission! Oh yeah, and it has the most innovative shape for a museum!

Sights & Landmarks
Théâtre Gallo Romain, also known as the Gallo-Roman theatre, is a significant historical site in Lyon that offers a glimpse into the city's ancient Roman past. The ruins of two Roman theaters are now used for open-air concerts and festivals, providing visitors with a unique cultural experience.
This place is really cool. It’s free and easy to find. It is one of the cooler Roman ruins because it is still being used today. It was fun watching people enjoy it like a park. Would highly recommend visiting then heading over to the museum!
Daniel H — Google review
Amazing ruins to check out within a close walk from the Cathedral nearby. Unfortunately, we did not have the time to explore the inside of the museum, and since we were heading to Rome it seemed appropriate to postpone anthing Roman to our later trips. The ruins themselves however, still are able to immerse you in history and come alive as you walk through them.
Minh N — Google review
A place to marvel, was for the community back then, still is now (so I heard). Will be wonderful to be part of activities here, but even just a quick stop on the way back from the Basilica already gave me glimpses of stories this awesome place has. Basking in the morning sun, this open air theater sure is special. Do visit the museum if you have the chance.
Milka C — Google review
Very easy to get to using the funicular which was about 2 EURO, one stop from the town cathedral. The ruins are open for people to just wander around and take photos, there is a museum that I did not go into. From there it's a short walk trip the basilica and the amazing views from there. You can also walk from there back to the old town which includes a very long and steep staircase.
Wing C — Google review
Walking through the theatre feels like stepping back in time, with its impressive stone seating, partially intact stage, and gentle slopes inviting exploratio. The site is remarkably well preserved, allowing visitors to walk freely among the ruins and soak up the atmosphere where audiences once gathered for performances nearly two thousand years ago.
Muhammad F — Google review
This was a very happy but unexpected discovery. There are many information points explaining what each space used to be, and this is supported by images of the buildings -this is certainly helpful because you’re only seeing stones! A must when visiting Lyon!
Ana T — Google review
The Ampitheatre was still in good condition considering how old it is. There are a lot of modern overlays here as the space is used for events etc. I think it would be an amazing venue. Go to the museum which tells the story of how Lyon was founded by the Romans. The Ampitheatre is so out in the open and there is no shade so be careful on hot days. You can look at the Ampitheatre for free but the museum has an entry fee.

Nestled in the historic heart of Lyon, the Musée Cinéma et Miniature is a treasure trove for film enthusiasts and miniature art lovers alike. Set within a beautifully restored 17th-century building, this museum showcases an impressive array of hyper-realistic miniature scenes that transport visitors into the world of cinema.
This museum was very well laid out. We enjoyed the smaller exhibition rooms which were usually themed in some way. We absolutely loved the Wes Anderson exhibit and would definitely recommend visiting if you enjoy his movies. I'm personally not into a lot of movies which definitely took away from the experience. However, if I were into them I can guarantee this is an amazing place to visit. Just fair warning to anyone like me that this might not be the perfect place for you. The miniature exhibits were excellent, we were in awe at how detailed some of the pieces were!
Katelyn — Google review
Really enjoyed my visit here - so many interesting exhibits and things to see. I think the best part is the fact that the films referenced and the props from the films are films that are very well-known, not just random French films. Would highly recommend to people as an activity in Lyon, however my one small issue was that we bought tickets in advance but still had to line up in the same queue as everyone else, so buying a ticket in advance was fairly pointless, only decreased the price slightly. But other than that really loved it.
Peter C — Google review
AMAZING! I think should be a must do when you visit Lyon with kids or just if you like movies and a different type of art. They have created incredible mini and real size scenes from movies and normal life things! A different way to know history as well! We went without tickets and ending paying less because they have a family packet. If you are 2 adults and one or more kids, it is definitely cheaper.
Angelica B — Google review
Worth visiting. You should go and see everything they placed in the museum. At first we enjoyed the props & artifacts from famous movies. However what we liked most is the miniature room, carefully detailed and amazinggg
Phuc N — Google review
Incredible and unique museum. They have some really cool pieces from films, which are still interesting to look at even if you haven’t seen them. The miniature section was a good surprise also—they are so detailed and realistic! While it is a bit on the more expensive side, it’s worth it and it is an independent business.
Evie F — Google review
Walking through this museum felt like stepping straight back into my childhood (I was born in the mid-80s), and it was nothing short of magical. From Star Wars to Batman 1989, from Aliens to Beetlejuice, the collection is packed with iconic treasures that instantly spark memories of the films that defined an era. According to one of the staff, the Darth Vader mask here is the only original one on public display today, that alone is worth the visit! What sets this place apart is how personal it feels. I love the great art museums of France, but this was different, so much more relatable. Every piece triggered a wave of nostalgia, reminding me of movies I adored and had nearly forgotten, and reigniting the sense of wonder that first made me fall in love with cinema. These films came from the golden age of moviemaking, where practical effects and early CGI blended to create timeless magic that today’s movies rarely capture. Seven floors are filled with cinematic history, and while you can see it all in about 1–2 hours, it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to linger at your favorites. For me, highlights included the Darth Vader helmet, the full Batman 1989 suit and vehicles, the wonderfully complete Beetlejuice exhibit, and the jaw-dropping animatronic Alien that makes you feel like you’re right on set. Seeing Thor’s hammer (Mjolnir), Iron Man’s glove, and nods to classics like Indiana Jones, Mrs. Doubtfire, Jumanji, The Mask, and even Fast & Furious only added to the thrill. If you grew up with movies from the late 80s through the early 2000s, this museum is pure nostalgia wrapped in cinema magic. It’s a time machine back to Saturday nights at the theater or trips to Blockbuster, and it will leave you smiling long after you leave. I can’t recommend it highly enough. As a bonus, all the staff that work there are friendly, knowledgeable and passionate! Update: the top floor which houses the miniatures was closed when we arrived for renovations. If this is important to you, come back when they are completed.

Chocolatier Sève is a renowned market offering an array of gourmet delights such as cheeses, cured meats, and exquisite desserts. The founders have garnered numerous accolades for their commitment to traditional craftsmanship and the creation of delectable treats. With over 30 years of experience, this establishment continues to impress with its sumptuous creations available at multiple locations in Lyon.
We had to try a “Tarte À La Praline” during our short stay in Lyon and it was excellent. Very tasty crust. A must try. Service was quite slow as there was only 1 person assisting customers which was not her fault and she did her best to help everyone.
Will C — Google review
The service was excellent, but unfortunately, the chocolates were too sweet for my taste.
April W — Google review
In my quest to find the best macaron in Lyon I systematically tried a macaron at each shop in the food hall. Sève’s were by far the best, with my favourites being 1) Caramel 2) Coconut 3) Coffee. I must’ve gone back 3-4 times in one day. They are quite expensive, which meant I could only afford to try 8, but this is reflected in the quality. The staff were lovely and very accommodating of my terrible French. Merci!

The pastries are so pretty, it feels almost guilty to eat them. Nonetheless, I ate them. I ordered the chocolate mousse one and I was thinking of getting more but it's so rich that I was very full at the end. I'd like to go back and more of the pastries. There were dozens and dozens!

This is a nice indoor market. It has quite different atmosphere to la boqueria market in Barcelona. Both of them are great place to see and eat. But, this market has unique features like quiet and less crowded. Local fruits, cured meat , and seafood were excellent. My wife and I enjoyed cured meat and varieties of seafood, oysters, sea urchins, shrimps, and clams. They know how to sell and packages cured meat. One of stores used a vacuum sealed package for cured meat. We felt safe to carry them. All of staffs were friendly and kind. One of members even made a luxury restaurant reservation for us. I think that they know good local restaurants because they are the food suppliers.

Sights & Landmarks
The Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière is a 19th-century religious monument in Lyon, France. It features four octagonal towers and houses a museum showcasing religious art. Regular Catholic services are held at the basilica. Visitors can enjoy a romantic evening in Lyon by staying at the Boudoir Spa, which offers luxurious accommodations with amenities such as a Jacuzzi and hammam, providing an ideal setting for special occasions or simply spending quality time together.
You can see the Basilica from almost everywhere in the Lyon old town but it is well worth heading up to see it up close. Take the funicular (walking back down is nice) to get there. The Basilica is in such lovely condition. The murals look amazing and there is a real sense of peacefulness. Make sure you take the time to look closely at the murals. My favourite was the one depicting Joan of Arc. We went on a Saturday morning and it wasn't too busy. We didn't have to wait to go in. It is free to visit. There is a lovely courtyard next to the Basilica where you get some amazing views over Lyon.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is one of Lyon’s most iconic landmarks, visible from almost anywhere in the city. Personally, I usually find the interiors of Orthodox churches more spiritual, but this basilica’s interior really amazed me — it’s beautiful and inspiring. The exterior is just as impressive, and the panoramic view over Lyon from the top is fantastic. You can get there easily by tram, or hike up if you prefer (which I’d also recommend). Nearby, the Roman Theatre and archaeological site are free to visit and very well preserved. Both the basilica and the ruins are definitely worth seeing.

Arriving late evening in Lyon, our Uber driver took us here on a quick detour to our hotel ‘because it is so very beautiful, and you guys can see view of Lyon skyline from there’. Indeed it was a beautiful Basilica, majestic even in the dark of night. Indeed it was an impressive view of Lyon. Very grateful of him, blessed his soul. I got the chance to go back the next morning, and although did not got the chance to go inside, my appreciation grew even more about the opportunity to visit. A must go when you are in Lyon. If your hotel is not nearby, they have tram from the city center that stops directly in front.

Beautifully located on top of a hill, and Best to take an Uber to get there. There is also a vista point on the side of the church with great views of the whole city. If you can walk down the hill, you can visit a nice museum with an outdoor Greek theatre. You can also take a short cut and walk the stairs down the hill

Lovely place to visit in Lyon. Get a day ticket for € 6.90 and couple of trains later you are there. Beautiful views of the city (sunset as well). Basilica is amazing. Don't compare it with Vatican however it is grand in its own way.

It is a marvelous place to visit even when you are not Christian. The interior of the basilica Notre-Dame of Fourvière in Lyon, is tremendously high. The walls are astonishing and it drops your mouth down to the floor. I have not taken many pictures inside because my eyes were focused on all the tiny details in each stunning things my eyes would lay eyes on. If one thing to visit in Lyon, it clearly is there and Paul Bocuse Market^^.

What a beautiful basilica one has the pleasure to see, adore and to participate because during our vist a mass was held. The church has an endless history to show, not only in the holy Christian sense but also in its rich architectural designs. A real treat to be there.

Until you take your breath away, what an impressive basilica it is. A great architectural construction. It is definitely worth a visit. And to pray in peace. May St. Mary be vigilant.

Historic Walking Areas
Vieux Lyon, located on the River Saône quayside, is a picturesque area characterized by Renaissance-era mansions with terracotta-tiled roofs and hidden courtyards. The medieval Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste boasts an ornate astronomical clock, while the Movies & Miniature Museum showcases scale models by miniaturist Dan Ohlmann. The neighborhood's hilly, medieval streets are lined with fine-dining restaurants and stylish bars offering Beaujolais wines.
