Gorkhi Terelj National Park

National park
Nature & Parks
Gorkhi Terelj National Park, located near Ulaanbator, is a popular destination with a mix of natural beauty and tourist amenities. The park offers hot springs, the scenic River Tuul, and opportunities for activities like hiking and horseback riding. Visitors can explore Turtle Rock for unique perspectives and visit the nearby Genghis Khan Complex. However, some may find the area slightly crowded due to numerous tourist camps and resorts.
We visited the National Park during September. Best part of the Park was the landscape, the mountains coverd with golden and brown trees. There is the Turtle rock and the Aryabal meditation temple inside the park, that are worth visiting. The Buddhist temple is located on a picturesque mountain, that takes about 30 min to climb up. The view from the temple is breathtaking. There are a lot of Ger Camps everywhere, some serve as hotels. Horse riding, double humped camel riding and hiking are some of the activities to participate. We had food in a restaurant that served really yummy lunch. The National Park does not seem to be a protected area, lot of constructions everywhere which is a sore to the eyes. The landscape in the National Park must be changing with change of season. It's worth visiting if you are visiting Ulaanbaatar.
Soudamini M — Google review
2025.02.27 the weather is still cold so I can only take photos and cannot hiking. The view is beautiful and the air is nice, the river is frozen.
Gunruthai C — Google review
A real disappointment to visit- upon entering the park you are met with concrete buildings and overdeveloped ger camps, half completed construction sites, rubbish everywhere , metal fences poles and wires. We walked up to the temple and though the landscape is no doubt beautiful, it is completely ruined by the view of all the tourist resorts below. Also no sign of any hiking trails anywhere, at least not in the part of the park that we were, and no indication of anywhere we could go that would. Clearly has just been exploited for tourism , nature has not been protected - trees been cleared to build more camps and resorts etc. Not what we expected from a so-called “national park”.
Viola J — Google review
The land is so beautiful. It’s a shame they are ruining it with a bunch of tourists traps, condos, and resorts. It makes it so ugly and there is trash everywhere! Also, they have animals tied up to where they can barely move at all. Cant even bend their legs, they have them just laid on the ground, never allowed to stand up unless someone wants to ride them. It’s really sickening to see. :( also, there are a lot of building that you can tell they started building, but then couldn’t finish. So a ton of open construction sites that will now just rot there and ruin the MOST beautiful areas. What a shame. This is a national park, I thought that means you are supposed to PRESERVE nature! Instead it’s literally being destroyed.
Katherine O — Google review
Near the entrance to the Park, you'll see a massive rock structure that looks like a turtle. You can hike up Turtle Rock for a great view. Across from Turtle Rock is a store to purchase snacks or beverages. Located in a beautiful area, I was disappointed to see an overflow of tourist camps and resorts scattered everywhere. Near the park is a wooden bridge. There you will find a beautiful view of Tuul River. About 1 km from Turtle Rock is The Aryabal Meditation Temple. You will discover Buddhist teaching signs in both English and Mongolian along the path to the temple. There is a small bridge leading up to the Temple. Once you reach the top, enjoy the spectacular view of the mountains and scenery. Nearby is the Milarepa Cave. There are activities such as horseback riding, & hiking available.
Melanie E — Google review
Still a natural place to visit but for how long? Many building sites, new resorts. Soon it won’t be possible to see the mountains.
Bar D — Google review
Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is a captivating destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Located just a short drive from Ulaanbaatar, the park offers stunning landscapes, including dramatic rock formations, lush meadows, and dense forests. The park's diverse ecosystem supports a wide range of wildlife, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. One of the highlights is the iconic Turtle Rock, a massive granite formation resembling a turtle, which is perfect for photography and short hikes. The Aryabal Meditation Temple, perched on a hill, provides a serene spot with panoramic views, ideal for those seeking tranquility and a spiritual experience. Accommodations range from traditional gers (yurts) to more modern lodges, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Mongolian culture while enjoying comfortable amenities. Horseback riding, hiking, and river rafting are popular activities that offer a deeper connection with the park's natural beauty. The hospitality of the local people adds to the charm of Gorkhi-Terelj, making it not just a visit to a national park, but an enriching cultural experience. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or a glimpse into Mongolia's heritage, Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is a must-visit destination.

Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex

Mentioned on
4 lists
Sights & Landmarks
Archaeological museum
The Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex is a must-visit landmark in Mongolia, featuring a towering 40m-high equestrian statue of Genghis Khan made of glistening silver stainless steel. Visitors can climb up the horse's neck for breathtaking views and explore an underground museum. The complex offers a unique experience with its lift rising up the tail of the statue, leading to steps to the horse's head.
Really interesting statue and attacked museum. You can take the elevator to the top of the statue, or walk up a narrow internal staircase. We walked up and had no difficulty. There’s a souvenir shop along the way to cool down if needed. Once to the top, even if you take the elevator, there are a few stairs to climb to get into the head of the horse. Pretty views from the top viewing platform. It’s also the tallest equestrian statue in the world.
Emily P — Google review
This is an interesting place to learn about the history of Chinggis Khaan and his family. The complex is well-maintained, and you can even dress up in traditional Mongolian clothing for photos, which is a lot of fun. You can climb up to the massive statue for a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The view is impressive and gives you a real sense of scale on both of the statue and the vast Mongolian landscape. (If you’re claustrophobic, I wouldn’t recommend climbing up the stairs) There are plenty of souvenir shops where you can pick up unique gifts and bring a bit of Mongolia home with you. Right outside, there are options for horse riding, so if you want a more active experience, you can try that as well. The site is generally easy to navigate, family-friendly, and offers a nice mix of history, photo opportunities, and outdoor activities. Even if you’re just stopping by for the statue and the view, it’s worth a visit.
J — Google review
Visiting the Chinggis Khaan Statue in Tsonjin Boldog, near Terelj, was an unforgettable experience. The sheer size of the statue is absolutely awe-inspiring—it truly takes my breath away. The monument symbolizes Genghis Khan’s return to his homeland, which makes it even more meaningful. From the observation deck at the top, the view of the snow-covered Mongolian landscape was magnificent and made my heart feel wide open. This is a must-visit destination in Mongolia. Highly recommended!
Henry H — Google review
I has visiting the Genghis Khan Statue Complex during the Mongolian New Year was an unforgettable experience. The cold winter air, the vast snow-capped steppe and the distant mountains created a breathtaking scene, making the giant statue even more majestic. Many local families came to pay their respects, take photos and celebrate the holiday together, giving me a warm sense of community despite the cold weather. The traditional music and festive decorations added to the charm, making the visit unique and meaningful. For foreigners, you need to buy tickets to visit. Inside the museum traditional musical instruments are displayed, the artifacts about his leadership, traditional Mongolian culture and the history.
LiLi N — Google review
The Genghis Khan Statue Complex is a landmark structure, located 54 km away from Ulaanbaatar. The statue of Genghis Khan on horseback is 40 meter in height, considered the largest of its kind in the world. It was completed in 2008, constructed from 250 tons of stainless steel. The base of the statue is 10 meter in height with 36 pillars that depict 36 Khans from Chenghis khan dynasty. Besides the famous statue there is a museum, cafe, souvenir store and photo opportunities in traditional mongolian costume in the complex. It's possible to climb up to the head of the horse to view the statue closeby or to have the panoramic view of the surroundings. There is an elevator and stairs to go up. The elevator was not working when we visited and the steps are so narrow difficult for people to climb up or go down at the same time. But it's a must visit place in Ulaanbaatar.
Soudamini M — Google review
If you’re visiting Mongolia, this is definitely a must-do experience. Just be prepared — it can get busy, and the elevator to the top is quite small and slow, so expect some waiting. There’s a museum on both the main floor and the basement, which is worth checking out. For anyone wondering, yes, there are toilets available on-site, but when we visited the main ones were out of service, so you had to use the facilities downstairs. Also, don’t miss seeing the eagles and camels outside — they really add to the atmosphere of the visit.
Ron G — Google review
Outstanding statue I had ever seen in my lifetime. The art work is incredible though the place itself is amazing with an awesome view you may have to take a great selfie 🤳🏼 with your friends and family. People working there are amazing and very friendly as well. But the stairs are tidy in the top.
Waleed M — Google review
A really awesome sight to see, and you can climb up the statue to see the Great Steppe from Chinggis Khaan's view. Great location to visit.

Went there for skiing this winter! The snow was fake but good, but make sure you get there early in the morning before the artificial snow goes bad. Good facilities with restaurant and WiFi! All equipment hire available and included for the entrance fee, very affordable. The slopes are easy to master if you know what you are doing, but the big peak is a challenge. Also has other facilities like hotel and hot springs!

In the morning, I eagerly made my way to Beiling Park. The vibrant sunflowers were in full bloom, creating a breathtaking sight with their brilliant colors. The park was adorned with an abundance of these cheerful flowers, forming a magnificent sea of blossoms. To explore this natural wonder, I entered through the east gate of the park and marveled at its beauty. My desire was to capture this spectacle on my iPhone and share it with others.
Why can't I be the first one to review somewhere ? The east gate of the park. I want to review on iPhone.

Visited on a chilly Friday morning so very few tourists. Peaceful and huge. Locals were out dancing, walking and doing various group activities. The tomb was wonderful to wander aroundwithout crowds. I recommend this. I loved the animal statues and decorative features. I was turned away from some exhibits because I didn't have a ticket for that specific part. The squirrels were excellent. But I did leave accidentally through a side entrance and had to walk for ages to get back to the main entrance to find my bearings. Listen out for the jet engine testing nearby.

The September 18th History Museum, located at the East Gate in Shenyang, serves as a poignant reminder of a significant event in Chinese history—the Mukden Incident. This museum is dedicated to recounting the harrowing tale of the Japanese invasion that began on September 18, 1931. Visitors can explore an array of photographs, artifacts, and artwork that vividly illustrate this dark chapter.
The 9.18 Memorial Museum, located in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, is a somber and poignant museum commemorating the September 18th Incident, a pivotal event in Chinese modern history. On September 18, 1931, the Japanese Kwantung Army invaded Shenyang, marking the beginning of Japan's occupation of Northeast China and the subsequent Second Sino-Japanese War. The museum showcases a vast collection of artifacts, photographs, and testimonies, providing a detailed and moving account of the incident and its far-reaching consequences. Through its exhibits, the museum serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of peace, sovereignty, and national unity, while also honoring the memories of those who suffered during this tumultuous period in Chinese history.

Mukden Palace

Museums
Mukden Palace, also known as Shenyang Palace in China, is a grand and intricate palace complex that dates back to 1625. It was the residence of the Qing dynasty rulers until 1644 and now serves as a museum showcasing historical art and crafts. With its resemblance to a smaller Forbidden City, this impressive complex features 114 buildings including ornate ceremonial halls, imperial living quarters, and even a royal baby cradle.
Buy tickets with your passport, rent the English language audio guide which automatically knows where you are in the complex. It's a wonderful site but was being closed the following day for restoration so check when open again. It's busy but possible to find quiet corners. Buy souvenirs here...saw old school Communist memorabilia in shops near the palace and regret not buying them.

This was the imperial palace of the early Qing dynasty and the first 3 Qing emperors lived there from 1625 to 1644. Within the grounds are the work, living and recreation chambers of the royal family. The architecture and furnishing reflected the Han, Manchu and Mongolian ethnic influences. Beautiful, exquisite and intricate. Well worth a visit
CK C — Google review
A beautifully preserved palace rich in history and culture. The architecture is stunning, with intricate designs and vibrant colors. Each hall tells a story of the Qing Dynasty. Well-maintained and informative, it’s a must-visit in Shenyang for history lovers and photographers alike. We really had a great time here where we could witness rich history of Qing dynasty and culture.
Mayur S — Google review
Good to visit the same Qing palace as in Beijing, although is smaller but still huge, can easily spend half a day here, and as it as popular as the forbidden city in Beijing, here is less crowded, and in summer it is definitely more cooler as well. Alot of shops offer costumes and make up for photo taking.
Will T — Google review
The history of this place is amazing. Next time I will definitely follow the guidance regarding how much time you could spend there. As I had other commitments I needed to rush through the rooms and buildings, still it was worth it. Remember to bring your passport with you, they will check it when buying a ticket. Plenty of cafes inside to have a rest. Avoid public holidays if possible as it gets really crowded.
Iwona M — Google review
Lots of history and amazing view into the life of Manchu culture and rulers. The grounds can take a good 3-4 hours to cover them all, so hydrate for the summer heat and dress warm in winter, but we'll worth the visit regardless of the season. Stunning achitecture, unique furnishings, and impressively maintained as a world cultural site. It isn't as big as the Forbidden City in Beijing, but it gives just as good a view of history. For a unique experience, you can very affordably (about ¥100) don clothing reflective of its history to wear as you tour
Joe M — Google review
This is the imperial palace built when the early Qing Dynasty entered customs. It's relatively simple. Located in the city center. It is recommended not to visit on holidays. Because there are many people in line. There are more people in the summer. Pay attention to sun protection. It won't be crowded in winter.

Interesting look into the Republic era of China 1910-25. Architecture is amazing in it's use of courtyards for functions of government. The furniture likewise is a view of early 20th Century style and present in abundance. The family mansion encompasses three floors and also maintains a full suite of unique furniture. The day we went it was very busy and at the height of summer could be quite warm. Hydrate. It's well worth the trip and just a block away from the earlier dynasty's palaces.

A must-see historical site in Shenyang. All the signs were in Chinese, so I didn't understand much of the history, but the historical preservation here is amazing! The combination of Chinese and Western architecture and design works so well. A unique place, ticket includes entry to the museum of money and finance next door.
