Although it is a gravel road with some rocks and loose stones, they do not present a risk and there are no major problems if you drive slowly (10 to 30 km/h). Highly recommended. (Translated by Google) Impressive place, you don't have enough space to see everything, a paradise. The video of the Condor isn't visible, but it passed very close; I didn't have time to film it head-on. Guanacos can be seen along several stretches of the road. There was a bit of ice in some places. The road is perfectly passable (June 25). The car was reading 1°, but with the sun it was beautiful. (Original) Impresionante lugar, no te da la vista para mirar todo, un lugar paradisíaco. El vídeo del Cóndor no se aprecia pero paso muy cerca, no me dio tiempo a filmarlo de frente. (Translated by Google) A lovely experience. Without a doubt, if there are two or more of you, it's perfectly possible to do it by car. You can do it from Mendoza or from Uspallata. Gravel road but in good condition, incredible views and native animals that come across all the time, enriching the landscape. A marvel! (Original) Yo hice el recorrido por primera vez. (Translated by Google) It's worth it. The road is gravel, but very good. Some places are a bit daunting due to the many curves and ravines. But the views and nature make up for it. There are birds, guanacos, and foxes. I went in late August, and in some places there was snow and guanacos drinking water from the meltwater. You climb up, and right at the top is the Cruz de Paramillos. I highly recommend it; it's beautiful to head towards Uspallata on this road. (Original) Vale a pena.

Villavicencio Natural Reserve

Nature preserve
Nature & Parks
Mountainous area known for its mineral water, diverse flora & mammals like gray foxes & wildcats.
A poetic trip from Aconaqua mountain range to Mendoze. Hypnotic landscape, vastness, desert feeling, great stop and lunch at Villavicencio
Kadi T — Google review
The place is beautiful. It’s definetelly one greener part of the Cordilleras in Mendoza. On the way there you cross some “villas” one part of the great Mendoza where you see more poverty and trash. It was a surprise to get there and see the mountains so narrowed and green, the first part of the way they look little away. You may prepare yourself and bring your snacks, the “restaurant” there is very basic, you may also want to arrive early to participate in the activities. You pay a ticket to have access to the hotel which is like 3 usd, but the activities prices varys up to 20usd .
Thaiara S — Google review
I think the ticket prices are very high, there is a beautiful view of the mountains, but there is nothing surprising or unusual here. Further on the free road you can see more beautiful and better landscapes
Максим М — Google review
Nice place to visit, I think its a good option for families with children and for retired who enjoy a relaxing walk and a short guided tour around the hotel which is closed and abandoned. In my opinion the 350 pesos fee is quite expensive for what you receive.
Nicolás B — Google review
We enjoyed to visit the Reserve! Tickets are good but it could be better if you receive a water bottle with them. A beautiful place, definitely you have to listen the talk with the guide, I learnt a lot about Villavicencio.
Marilina B — Google review
Half day tour. Amazing view!
Paola P — Google review
A very good alternative to vineyard tours in Mendoza is to hire a car and come to this natural reserve. Guanaco is an easy sighting here since they are protected, along with condors and other animals. The view is sublime.

Such hidden gem! More beautiful than hot springs / spas I have been to in Italy, Switzerland and Sweden combined! Make sure to buy the ticket in the town of Fiambala before going - the only way to buy the ticket at the entrance is with the app (but there is no reception) or to bribe the entrance guard ahaha). It is allowed to bring your own food and drinks so it’s worth coming prepared. Pools range between 35-45 degrees and are very clean! Absolutely marvelous!

There are tables with chairs where you just rest or pick up you meals while sighting the amazing views. You can spend all the day there. The ticket should be get it in advance... Remember to call the city hall of Fiambala to reserve your spot. The complex is open from 8am to 10pm during summer. Please refer to their website or call since hours of operation and reservation may vary.

We loved riding horses on their massive property. Accompanied by two dogs, no less. Very attentive service. Rustic but well-thought out decor. A quiet respite, passable for English speakers, but not wonderful in that regard. We enjoyed our stay!

Casa Histórica - Museo Nacional de la Independencia, also known as the House of Independence, is a significant colonial-era building in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina. It played a pivotal role in Argentina's history as it was the site where the country declared its independence from Spain in 1816. Despite facing years of neglect and subsequent reconstruction, this historical house still stands as a testament to colonial architecture and the events that shaped Argentina's destiny.

It is one of the most emblematic buildings in the history and culture of Argentina. Although throughout its long history it has undergone many modifications, and one could say that little remains of its original construction, this does not take away its historical and symbolic value. It is recommended to visit it with the guided tours and the night show, which offers a historical overview of the independence struggle. This show lasts approximately half an hour and it is necessary to register in a list. Entrance is free.

Sights & Landmarks
Quilmes Ruins, located in the Calchaqui Valleys of Argentina's Tucuman province, is a significant pre-Columbian settlement. At an elevation of 2000 meters, this archaeological site was once home to the Quilmes tribe and covers 30 hectares at the foot of Cerro Alto del Rey. The ruins date back to 850 AD and offer insight into the daily life and rituals of this ancient community.
An incredible place to visit and learn about the magnificent culture and history of the Quilmes. There is a great museum on-site with artifacts in several exhibitions and some interactive displays too. A great, short movie detailing the Quilmes is shown throughout the day. Outside of the museum are the ruins, a mixture of reconstructed works and original structures. It is wonderful to explore the ruins and climb high onto the mountain they called home. Toilets, shops and some basic eateries can be found outside. Entrance fees vary depending on nationality, with foreigners paying a little more but very reasonably priced. They accept both cash and card. Definitely worth a trip here.

Sept.25: After a scenic drive we arrived @Ruins of Quilmes. We paid entrance fee of ARS12.000 = €7.50 p.p. This was for museum, archeological site as well as for the perfectly clean toilets with even the possibility to have clean drinking water. Fernanda who spoke really good English explained the 4 rooms of the museum. Nr. 3 would have an interactive video in about 15 minutes & would telll us all about the histtory, living, war, defeat & captivation of the Quilmes people. Nr. 1 & 2 were informative with headphones for English, Spanish or Portuguese. Nr.4 was an exhibition of artifacts. @site there were huge cacti. We went all the way up to the Northern viewpoint; we spend here a bit more than 3 hours.

The place features some of the best views you will get in Argentina. For starters, I didn't expect the museum to be so modern. The people in the stores and the guides were very nice and friendly as well. I climbed 300 meters (about 1000 feet) following the old tracks built by the ancient townsfolk. I must admit, they had a remarkably robust way of building things as all the stone stairs are still there and quite firm. However, some areas of the track are unstable, so you need to wear proper mountain shoes and mind your step as you could easily slip and fall. Also, lots of wasps on the way, so keep that in mind if you are afraid of them like I am x-x Lots of tourists too, but it seems to be quieter during the mornings.

A great place to visit ... the access road is a little rough, but worth it. Do not, under any circumstances, miss out on the musuem here - it was beyond all our expectations. The displays were incredibly informative, and so well put together. There is little shade, so make sure to have lots of water with you as you walk around.

Amazing place, 7k to get in (UK citizen), stunning views from the southern and northern view points. Museum didn't have power when I was there so could not go inside.... The road to the site is poor quality. Hopefully they will pace it soon.

Beautiful place! There is the option to take a guide with you or go by yourself. The little museum is pretty modern and has English subtitles too. There’s a few shops and good bathrooms. We even saw a few lama’s there. We had low expectations for this place, but they were totally met! 🦙

Amazing site, a massive pre-incan citadel and sacred city, the biggest and best preserved in Argentina. The museum attached to it is very informative and sets the scene for visiting the site itself.

Picturesque colored rock formations embedded with marine fossils, plus a natural amphitheater.
Wow, whst an absolute treat this adventure was. We rented a camper van in Córdoba and travelled all through this area. Stunning views around every corner. You really feel like you should be out on a horse, herding llamas while keeping an eye out for armadillos, iguanas and wild foxes, all of which we saw here. The colours and hues change through the the days and sunsets and sunrises are truly spectacular sights. Lots of stops along the way to check out canyons, vistas, caves, natural amphitheatres, etc. Roads are quite good although you do have to get used to windy mountain driving. Much more influence of indigenous people in this area. Different foods too.
Erik K — Google review
One of the most stunning drives I’ve ever done. The colors and rock formations are surreal—like stepping into a painting. Every few minutes, you feel like stopping the car just to stare. We took our time, pulled over at El Anfiteatro and La Garganta del Diablo (both a must), but honestly, the whole road is an open-air museum. Go around sunset if you can—the light on the red rocks is unforgettable. No entrance fee, just nature at its best.

And I thought southwest USA was unique! Northwest Argentina in general, and this Quebrada in particular, are just as spectacular, colorful and breathtaking. I so wish I had devoted more time to explore it. Do yourself a favor and spend time here. If you're pressed for time, you can skip the Garganta del Diablo and El anfiteatro, way too touristy, and go backcountry. I recommend spending at least 3 days here.

Geologic Formations
El Obelisco is a picturesque destination along route 68, boasting numerous tourist attractions that showcase the impressive formations created by nature. These formations are clearly marked and easily accessible to visitors. The obelisk itself, featured in photos and videos, serves as a prominent landmark along the path leading towards it. To avoid crowds, it is recommended to embark on this journey early in the day.
Spetacular views all moments of this road from all directions are from a movie. Peculiar Stone formations, good road, multiple stops to admire views and take photographs or sit for a picnic. In summer it might be too hot perhaps, but after season its wonderful. I suggest to stop places like this because there is no buses and crowded spots…

If you go over the fence behind the Obelisco, you'll find a bushy prairie where wild llamas sometimes roam. Don't approach them — the dominant male may charge at you and attack.

Sept.25: it's a must (photo) stop when driving on RN68 from Cafayate to Salta or vice versa. The Obelisk itself isn't much special, but its an excellent opportunity for landscape photography due to the unique shape & contrast with the sky & the Andean mountains. Although climbing is not permitted, it is possible to get close enough to appreciate it from various angles, especially from the back you have excellent views of the surroundings.

Probably one of the least spectacular rock formation of the incredible Route 68 between Salta and Cafayate, but still well worth a stop, also because it is right next to the road and it requires no hiking or even walking to be admired.

(Translated by Google) The Obelisk Natural Monument in Cafayate, located in the province of Salta, Argentina, is a prominent geological formation within the imposing Quebrada de las Conchas, along the famous National Route 68. This natural wonder has become a must-see for those traveling through northern Argentina due to its beauty, accessibility, and geological value. 🪨 Description of the Obelisk The Obelisk is a tall, elongated rock formation reminiscent of a typical urban monument, hence its name. It rises vertically from the surrounding terrain like a large stone column carved by natural erosion over millions of years. Its surface is composed primarily of reddish sediments from the Cretaceous period, the same sediments that make up much of the Quebrada de las Conchas. 🌄 Natural Context The surrounding landscape is arid, with multicolored hills and sparse vegetation, which further highlights the Obelisk's unique shape. The region is part of a protected nature reserve and is close to other iconic formations such as the Devil's Throat and the Amphitheater. 🛣️ Access and Tourism Location: Approximately 20-25 km from Cafayate along Route 68 toward the capital city of Salta. Access: You can get there by car or on guided tours from Cafayate or Salta. Cost: Free admission (natural monument without infrastructure fees). Recommendation: Ideal to visit in the morning or at dusk, when the colors of the rock change with the light. 📸 Tourist and Photographic Value The Obelisk is an excellent opportunity for landscape photography due to its unique shape and contrast with the sky and the Andean relief. Although climbing is not permitted, it is possible to get close enough to appreciate it from various angles. 🏞️ Importance Geologically, it represents the power of river and wind erosion in a desert environment. For tourism, it is part of one of the most beautiful scenic routes in the country. Culturally, it reinforces the value of the natural heritage of northwestern Argentina. ⭐ Conclusion The Cafayate Obelisk is not just another rock: it is a natural sculpture that tells the story of time, shaped by the elements and admired by travelers from all over the world. If you are in Salta or Cafayate, it is an essential stop to connect with the majesty of the northern Argentine landscape. The Amphitheatre is a natural wonder located just a short distance from the popular Gargante del Diablo in northern Argentina. It features stunning red rock formations that were shaped millions of years ago, making it an ideal place for families with young kids to explore. The site offers free entrance and convenient parking, with local artisans selling their crafts and sometimes musicians playing music to take advantage of the natural acoustics.
Sept.25: again a great spot to stop if coming from Cafayate to Salta on the RN68, as it's only a few meters to walk to the free entrance. There's a big free parking. @our time of arrival the bathrooms were permanently closed. Some local vendors were selling minerals, clothing, jewelry, drinks & other small stuff. We arrived around 1PM & tour busses were already gone, only those with car were still there. So to have the place for your 'own' to get pictures you simply have to wait a little bit.
