What an amazing place. Staff dressed in character costume and a lovely, authentic museum showing what it would have been like to live here back in the day. The staff showed us how the trebuchet worked (don’t worry about health & safety, as long as no one stands in the target area 100yds away, it’ll be ok). Loved every minute of our visit. Run by the community so please support them with a visit. Extremely reasonable entry cost.

For our 8 year old hard to follow, and we translated to our native language (Flemish) which was sometimes a bit of a struggle to get the terms right. The cave was well lit and features some big halls and long corridors. Afterwards there's a viewpoint you can visit with archaeological findings.

When there were 5 people at 17.00 o'clock we couldn't go because "the girl" just closed the cash-register!! The lady telling all this went with us inside the 'museum' smoking all the time. Definitely recommend it. Bonus: the sand of the little beach is simply great.

We went in early October and the weather was absolutely gorgeous. You can’t miss this area! If you get into Portovenere early enough, you can catch the ferry back! We decided to walk around the town and we ended up at a tunnel that ran under the castle and brought you to an elevator. That brought us to the castle and we walked around the outside. Our tour guide Marco was so knowledgeable and pleasant, in fact he told us there was also the possibility to sleep there and a week later we came back and stayed the night!!!! Impressive medieval castle on a hilltop over a village. It's BIG and just after the holiday season it was almost deserted. We spent an hour or two roaming the ramparts, the many rooms (including a fascinating exhibition of 29th century socialist paintings) - and yes, the torture dungeon as well. We were pleasantly surprised to be left to roam the place on our own accord. The view of the valley from the ramparts is stunning.

Spent two wonderful nights at Castello di Compiano. It’s a bit off the beaten track but well worth the extra effort. The staff were friendly and helpful, breakfast was bountiful, and the restaurant served delicious local dishes. They arranged a private tour in English of the castle’s museums. The village of Campiano is charming and this is a perfect jumping off point for visiting some of the other historic castles in the area.

Love this place my wife & I visit every time we’re around which is at least once a year. There’s always something going on and the views are amazing.

Imagine you are in a fairytale. You won't find WiFi in rooms, breakfast is quite poor. But you will definitely enjoy accommodation in this castle. You can also enjoy private romantic room for additional cost. Rooms are clean and convenient, personnel is very friendly. People say it is noisy here. Most probably you need to try staying here in the early October - almost no visitors here this time of year.
