The best find! Amazing playground with cubby house and toy cars for kids. Good coffee for tired parents. Cool castle. Even saw some baby cows.
Molly M — Google review
I call here regularly with my wife and grandchildren, a perfect drop of point when I'm on my way to thornton. The food is true English home cooking. The menu gives a good choice to pick from food freshly cooked, really friendly staff. It's a family run farm/shop/cafe with a castle to have a little look around +a child's play area. With indoor and outdoor seating.
Alan H — Google review
Lovely place to pop in for an ice cream. Small and friendly with indoor and outdoor seating, we sat indoors as it was pouring down yesterday
Marie S — Google review
Lovely place to stop and pickup ice-cream on route to the lakes or further north. Lovely staff, good ice cream, excellent cakes and tray bakes. :) Stopped on the way up and the way back. Will remember for the next trip!
Jonathan W — Google review
We visited the castle, but the main purpose of the visit was of course the ice cream. All sorts of flavours on offer and were delicious! We even used the vending machines that serve fresh milk/ milkshakes. Well worth a visit!
Baza B — Google review
Really good for children, playhouse and castle ruins. Milk shakes available to take home from machines outside are really good. We went back twice just for a bottle of flavoured milk.
Barrie R — Google review
“Delicious homemade ice cream with lots of flavours — beautiful countryside setting, worth a stop!”
Tippapai M — Google review
Lovely little family run ice cream Parlour. A wide range of flavours and a good choice of food and hot drinks. A little play area with a good range of play equipment (swings, slides, play house, see-saw, even a wooden castle!). Plenty of benches to sit at. You can even see the baby cows over the stable style doors in the summer months in the nearby the barns. Close to Brough castle too.

Really lovely park and cool museum, Staff were friendly and helpful all except the one that served us on the shop on the way out, Lovely cafe too
Sally A — Google review
Museum not open on Monday or Tuesday, so just walked around the grounds which were lovely. Stopped at the cafe for tea and cake which was lovely. Lots of places to enjoy a picnic. Need to pay for parking.
Alison W — Google review
Lovely grounds to walk around. Clean toilets at the hall and a lovely brew at the rotunda by the car park. Only down side.. Reflection pond was empty at the time we visited
Sheena C — Google review
A beautiful historic house and art gallery, set in a really nice park with a wonderful garden. I particularly liked the chapel, long gallery and the Victorian kitchen.
Nicholas T — Google review
Expectations exceeded. It's a forest, magnificent gardens, a stately home, a museum and an art gallery all in one. Even the coffee was good. All the staff were friendly and knowledgeable.
GAT — Google review
What a lovely place! Beautiful, well tended grounds, and a stunning, newly renovated stately home to look around. Sleepy ducks round a pond and fountain, wonderful flowers and ancient trees. A very nice cafe. Despite being a weekday when we visited, it was pretty busy, and we were lucky to find a parking space. Parking was cheap though, as was entry to the hall and museum.. cheap for me, and free for my student companions. My ticket is also valid for the whole year, should I wish to return, which I certainly will. Definitely worth a visit if history, nature and beautiful houses are your thing.
Anita L — Google review
Excellent place. Ticket price is £5.50 for an annual pass, so can visit as many times as you want in a year. Staff welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable and informative. Lots of 'behind the walls' secret panels that were highlighted, along with information and historical stories. Great cafe in the grounds with a good assortment of food and drinks at a reasonable price. Nice outside grass and garden areas too. Great afternoon spent here

Singing Ringing Tree

Mentioned on
23 lists
Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Singing Ringing Tree is a unique art installation located in Lancashire's Calder Valley. This futuristic structure, resembling the head of a giant bird or a tribal headdress, is made of steel pipes and produces sounds as the wind passes through it. Positioned on Crown Point, it offers stunning views across the valley and is part of the Forest of Bowland's reforestation program.
A short but beautiful stroll up to see the sculpture and plenty windy there to enjoy the pipes’ tunes. Nearby (shared parking lot) there is also a “life giving life” field where people have the ashes of their loved ones buried and a tree is planted with a mini little plaque- it’s also a beautiful spot to sit and enjoy the views. Everything is free-parking, singing tree, etc. It’s a short stop (under an hour tops) but definitely worth the stop!
Heather S — Google review
Really enjoyed this visit, short walk to the actual tree and did sound pretty good when it was chiming. Accessible for most although parts of path are rocky and short hills may make it difficult to access for some. It was great views for miles and miles, really worth a visit.
Osman K — Google review
This the second time I've been here and although I would class myself as a conservative artist lover, hating Turner prize and that type, I love this. You need it to be windy, the more wind the better to be honest. However, where its situated i guess its always windy enough. The car park is free and the walk down to the sculpture is about 5 minutes, maybe 1/4 of a mile. I dont think you would easily get down to it in a normal push wheelchair or if you were disabled but with care and help you can. There is a bench and seating when you get there to rest as well. The sculpture provides a strange, haunting sound, almost a moaning or wailing. I think if there were 10 people listening then they might all have a different thought though. The views are spectacular as well. I hope the videos give a reasonable reproduction of the sound. It will be VERY spooky if you go there on a dark stormy night, may be All Hallows eve?
Bobby D — Google review
Sure! Here’s a revised version of your review, incorporating the tree sound: Car park (free) is about a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Singing Tree. It was a breezy day with a steady wind – we could actually hear the tree making sounds, almost like a haunting background from a horror movie, which was quite atmospheric! The views were absolutely stunning – well worth the visit for those alone. A unique place that’s perfect for a quick stop on a beautiful day.
Imran L — Google review
Well worth a look, especially on a windy day (you'll really hear it singing, as you approach!) That said, keep tight hold of your bag/ phone! The wind can get FIERCE up on Crown Point! Truly unique experience 😁
Rachel S — Google review
I enjoyed the little walk along the straight length of the path approaching the Tree, it kinda enhances the peaceful experience. (It's a shame that the humming sound which I heared whilst there, wasn't audible on the video I shot, just the distorted wooshing sound from the gusty wind on the microphone. 🙄😁
Anthony B — Google review
Great attraction to visit if you’re passing that way. I first saw this when it was shiny and new in 2007 and it’s still going strong when we visited on the way past this weekend although it’s a bit weathered now. Best visited on a moderately windy day because too little or too much wind and it doesn’t sing as well. When we went this weekend it was extremely high winds so the audio on the video is crazy, don’t listen with headphones :’) It’s almost impossible to get the sound of the tree on videos so it’s worth experiencing for yourself and the YouTube videos don’t do it justice. There is a 4 seat picnic bench which needs reloading and one of the wooden stools has come off. Accessible via a 5 minute walk from the carpark, along a gravel path. We saw a mum coming back towards us with a baby in a stroller managing the path fine but the last bit on the way back up is a slight incline so bare that in mind unit visiting with a heavier wheelchair. The path also experiences strong cross winds.
Little R — Google review
A really cool piece of artwork set in a peaceful spot – the only sound you hear is the sculpture itself. 👀 First Impressions It looks huge in photos, so I was expecting something massive, but it’s only about 3-5 metres tall. Bit of a surprise! ✨ Experience Still, it’s clever, unique and worth seeing if you’re nearby. The sound it makes is oddly calming and adds to the quiet setting. ⭐ Overall Smaller than expected but still a cool stop – peaceful, unusual and definitely a photo-worthy landmark.

The Station Inn Ribblehead Viaduct

Inn
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled near the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct, The Station Inn offers a charming retreat for travelers seeking both comfort and convenience. This traditional stone pub features simple yet cozy rooms equipped with free WiFi and breakfast options, making it an ideal stop for those exploring the stunning Yorkshire Dales. For budget-conscious adventurers, there are also bunk rooms available. After a day of hiking or sightseeing, guests can unwind in the welcoming atmosphere of this historic inn while enjoying hearty meals and local brews.
A mere few minutes walk from the viaduct and a hop from the train station or the roadside parking available, this homely pub has good real ale, fantastic food and lovely staff - if you got snowed in, you wouldn't rush to call for rescue. Pork pie, chips, mush peas and gravy was as easy on the wallet as it was delicious. Shame I was too full to eat all the chips (sorry). The perfect place to finish (or start) a good long walk and my go to pub when hiking in the area.
Ray K — Google review
We had two meals here and really enjoyed them both; the staff were friendly and the atmosphere inside the pub is warm and characterful. The steak and ale pie and the sticky toffee pudding were both excellent. Unfortunately the panna cotta was a bit too gelatinous for my taste, and the topping on the crumble didn’t seem very well cooked. However, aside from these two desserts, we really liked this pub - it’s a great option after a long day of walking !
Phoebe B — Google review
I feel this pub is inevitably playing on it's location. I love traditional pubs and this is surely one, good selection of beers, didn't eat but it looked basic and like everything a tad overpriced because of the location, £21 for fish and chips!!! BUT why oh why can't you put a bit of effort into cleaning , it really was frayed around the edges and dirty, toilet door covered in graffiti pretty basic stuff. Pleasent staff.
Guy S — Google review
Had a great lunch here after a beautiful walk on a big loop round the viaduct and hills behind. Generous portions. Very friendly. Walk in only unless more than 6. Real fire. Cosy.
Lisa — Google review
Very lovely pub & inn situated in a great location in the Dales. We actually got stranded here in a storm and the staff were very accommodating (though keep in mind rooms aren't always available! popular place!). Excellent place to spend an evening or night after a day's ramble or just for lunch after peeking around the viaduct.
Canis L — Google review
My favourite pub ever. Have been visiting for over 11 years and never disappoints. Food and service always on point. Beer great. Best beer garden I’ve ever visited. Staff always friendly and attentive. Cheers and will always be back!
Kirsty M — Google review
Stayed here one night last week in my Campervan and it was a great little spot for a stop over. Staff were friendly and very helpful and the food was good. Only criticism, if staying in the carpark would be the cattle grid can be a little noisy as vehicles rumble over it in the night.
Mark2 S — Google review
Visited in early December and had the most perfect meal!! We walked from our nearby b&b in the pitch black to be greeted by a super cosy interior, one of the best steak and ale pies I’ve had, and my favourite cider on tap! The service was quick and the staff were lovely, the locals were also really friendly and there was plenty of fun conversation to be had. I look back on my visit very fondly. It’s also right next to the train station so the perfect location for anyone out on hikes.

National Trust - Gawthorpe Hall

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
Gawthorpe Hall is an Elizabethan house in Lancashire with a Victorian makeover and ties to the Brontë family. It's owned by the National Trust and offers a historic venue for weddings. The house showcases period rooms from its 1850 remodeling, featuring original plasterwork ceilings, panelling, and the remarkable Long Gallery. Set in peaceful grounds and woodland in Padiham, it also houses the renowned Gawthorpe Textile Collection with links to the Shuttleworth family.
Fabulous National Trust/council property, mostly original and restored sympathetically. The grounds are pleasant and there is a short walk around the property. No café on site but when we visited there was a little coffee van which seemed very popular - there are toilets but not to the usual NT standard. Definitely worth a visit and a lovely spot for a picnic on a good day.
Carolyn B — Google review
NB no cafe here, though a welcome coffee caravan made well earned drinks. The hall itself is worth a visit and the staff are all friendly, knowledgeable and want to inform and entertain. The grounds were ok but in need of some love and a good prune here and there.
Stephen C — Google review
A hidden gem in a very pleasant setting. Much more to see inside than I expected: Beautiful, period furnishing and decor throughout and I was especially taken by the wonderful plasterwork. Really enjoyed looking around and gathering new information from the friendly, knowledgeable staff. Browsing the interesting selection of goods in the lovely little gift shop completed my visit. Another new favourite place that I'll definitely be returning to.
113 E — Google review
Excellent visit and the volunteers have excellent knowledge and share this with you about the family, the house and the artefacts in it. Gardens and woods are nice for walking, the only down side is there is no cafe.
Darren E — Google review
What a lovely day out in Burnley. We really enjoyed the Jacobean/Elizabethan history of the house and the later period with Victorian rooms. The interiors furniture were stunning. The national trust needs to keep up with renovating this lovely treasure well worth a visit for history buffs. Well worth a repeat visit. The guides weee really helpful and chatty for questions and wxtra bits of history to the house. The Car park was free shame no cafe on site as it would really take off. There was a little van which provided refreshments on a nice day not sure about inclement weather though.
Tazang20 — Google review
Sorry that hall was closed on visit I will return when open ...well maintained grounds I thought it was lovely...was expecting to scan my nt card to park but no machine re parking on site. No cafe facilities to my knowledge was crossed out on info sign
Yvonne N — Google review
Absolutely stunning place to take a walk. The dogs loved the foreat Even the kids enjoyed the walk and scenery. It's a must see and free if your NT members
Brett G — Google review
The approach from a tricky road entrance, along a very patched driveway and into a dusty car park is not inspiring but the Hall is wonderful. What a survivor! The room guides bring the history to life and the reception staff are so friendly. If textiles and needlework are your thing, or not, the collection upstairs is interesting. There is no tea room and the toilets are not the best but there are picnic benches and there was a coffee van . This is a joint venture between National Trust and Lancashire County Council but all the better for it. Perhaps the most interesting shop I’ve visited, I couldn’t resist a weaving loom flying shuttle repurposed into a Galileo thermometer. Despite being rough around the edges this is a true historical gem.

Ingleborough Cave, located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, offers guided tours through a large cave system with impressive lighting and a grotto. Discovered in 1837 by determined explorers, the cave boasts 450 million years of geology and history. Visitors can explore a spacious fossil gallery stretching for about 500 meters and marvel at dramatic stalactites and fossils.
Went with my 2 daughters yesterday. The walk upto the cave is lovely and the caves themselves are so impressive! The couple at the cave entrance were really enthusiastic and the guide even showed us the glowing stoned with his torch. Excellent day out.
Max R — Google review
Brilliant cave to explore for all the family. 3ven dog friendly which is a massive bonus. Nice gentle and easy path to the cave.
Graham M — Google review
Great place and was nice and cool inside in this hot weather 😊. Staff were great and friendly. There was a man at the end of the walk in the cave that gave us lots of information on the history. We all really enjoyed it.
Stacey A — Google review
A lovely cave above Ingleborough Nature Trail. I visited with my two nieces and we had a great time, even if they did think it was a bit 'spooky' and 'creepy'. It's a self guided tour, with information on laminated sheets to read as you wander round. Helmets are provided. The staff are lovely, and took the time to talk to us, and encouraged my nieces to ask questions about the cave. You can access it via public footpaths, or pay to wander up Ingleborough Nature Trail. We opted for the Trail as my nieces also looked for the Mimpish Squimbies on the trail on the way to the cave. It's worth paying the money to see the cave. It looks amazing, is full of stalagmites and stalactites, and has a crystal clear pool too. My nieces particularly liked all the water flowing alongside the path, and the fact that the little 'waterfalls' splashed on them as they walked past. Additionally there's a decent path throughout the cave, and they sell food/ a few souvenirs at the entrance of the cave too.
Donna W — Google review
Beautiful cave with wonderful features and stalactites and small cascades inside, the water in this cave originated all the way from nearby Gaping Gill. That said, this cave can get awfully crowded at times, and allowing a lot of dogs into this cave (even on leads) is, in my opinion, a step too far which ruined an otherwise amazing experience.
Gleb B — Google review
Long walk up from Clapham village but worth every step. Beautiful show cave that you walk through and end up 500 metres under ground. Low ceilings in places but hard hats provided so all good. Staff friendly and on hand for questions and queries. Amazing formations of stalagmites and stalactites and the different colours formed by the different elements in the water's. Little shop with basic souvenirs and refreshments.
Stephen A — Google review
Lovely walk to the cave and then into it. Staff were very friendly and informative. Dog friendly.
Emma G — Google review
To be honest, I didn't understand why I should pay about 16 pounds per person for "a cave" but I couldn't be more wrong! This cave is breathtaking, and the size is surprising! The self-guided tour is interesting and helpful to spot the amazing things in the cave. Bring some warmer clothes if you come during the summer (the cave is colder than outside). You will find a small snacks and hot drinks shop with some souvenirs at the entrance to the cave.

This experience was enriching. Parking is excellent; if you time it right, there's no need to wait for the tour. Make sure you dress warmly and have shoes that don't slip. The staff on tour was friendly and really knowledgeable. Well done. I do recommend the visit as the cave experience is unique in every way. However, the staff in the shop were a bit sour, with no smiles or kindness. I felt like I was being watched all the time. One young man at the till had excellent customer skills and knowledge. Thank you, overall great experience.

It's the only show cave I've visited and actually felt like I was in a natural cave. The fact that most of the cave is pretty much j as nature created it, with scaffolding platforms to walk on (rather than a dug out and concrete filled floor) gives it this feeling. Plus the end of the cave is still being explored. Really worthwhile visiting. The tour guides are great at what they do, and you're given plenty of opportunities at the end to make your own way out of the cave at your own pace to take photos.

White Scar Cave is a fascinating underground wonder! The guided tour takes you through impressive limestone formations, waterfalls, and unique chambers filled with natural beauty. The staff are knowledgeable and make the experience engaging. A bit of walking and ducking in places, but absolutely worth it for the breathtaking sights inside. Highly recommend for anyone visiting the area

Great cave experience, Mike our guide was fantastic. Informative and interesting to listen to. Great for adults and kids. You do need to have quite good mobility, there is a few sections that require you to walk stooped over and to be manoeuvring around rocks, lots of stairs too.
Sue D — Google review
Second visit to this outstanding set of showcaves and still every bit as magical as the first. Even the view from the car park is awe inspiring in a way that few other attractions can match, and things only get better from there as you make your way underground. The guides are very knowledgeable and help you to make sense of what you are seeing as you go. Some superb flowstone formations, and I found the ice age mud deposits in the battlefield cavern utterly fascinating. Take advantage of the toilet facilities before you enter the caves. It's a long walk around with a lot of running water. Definitely worth half a day of your time spent on a visit here.

Thoroughly enjoyed the tour . The guide was extremely knowledgeable and very personable. If your tall be prepared for quite long passages where your crouched right down . The tour takes around 80 minutes to complete. Our group comprised ages from 10yrs old to about 70 ish and we all enjoyed it. Well worth a visit Esp on a rainy day
Nigel A — Google review
Our guide was Thomas, and he was wonderful. Very knowledgeable, friendly, and eager to show us the cave as well as its interesting features. We will be returning when the water levels and higher and the waterfalls in the cave are more active The cave itself is fascinating, filled with cool formations and fossils, and with an interesting history. The walk is 1 mile in total and has areas with a wet floor, very low ceiling, and lots of steps but definitely well worth it for the history and formations
Rosie K — Google review
Really interesting tour but quite a workout especially if your of senior age lots of bending under low ceilings and metal steps to climb you'll be glad of a coffee or tea in the cafe afterwards worth seeing though

Hiking Trails
The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail is a stunning 4.5-mile journey that showcases the breathtaking beauty of Yorkshire's countryside. Nestled on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, this popular trail attracts both locals and visitors year-round with its enchanting scenery. As you traverse this circular route, you'll encounter five magnificent waterfalls and eight water features in total, all while following the picturesque paths along the River Twiss and River Doe.
What a great day out, really nice walk, quite difficult for older people, and a definite no for a little of disabled. But give it a go if you have good support and family assistance. They have a few places for a brew or snack, and even an ice cream van about half way. I think we took about 3 + hours, and walked about 4 miles. Do it you won't regret.
David H — Google review
Never heard of this place before so we thought we'd give it a go. Being in early October and a Monday it was quiet when we arrived, plenty of parking. Not the best of days weatherwise but that didn't put us off. It's definitely a trail that needs moderate fitness as it's fairly up and down with many steps, plus good boots are needed (especially in the wet as the rocks are slippery). But if you take time there shouldn't be any issues. Some amazing waterfalls with good viewing points. There are cafes at the start and half way round but the one by the carpark was closed. (Monday). There was an ice-cream van further up the trail. Overall a pleasant hike with great views. Is it worth £11 per adult? I'd say yes as someone has to maintain it.
Neil R — Google review
This walk is amazing. We went as a family group with 4 adults and 2 children aged 3 and 6 yrs. We thought the prices were a bit steep at first but the car park is very good and the toilets are clean and modern. The walk is exciting and awesome. There are waterfalls all the way up and on the way back down too. The path is stoney and slippy at times with lots of steps so adequate footwear and clothing is necessary. Absolutely brilliant.
Wendy G — Google review
Was a bit skeptical when i had to pay 11 each to walk around the trial. It was worth it. Many beautiful waterfalls and takes about 2 hours at least to complete. It took us 5. We like to stroll and really admire what were looking at. We even got to walk behind one of the falls which was breathtaking.
Nathan H — Google review
Way better than I imagined..walk took 3 hours to complete, and we saw many small to medium waterfalls. Entrance at £11 IS good value, don't let it put you off. Parking is plentiful, with excellent toilets just before yo pay to enter.
CHRISSO F — Google review
Great but long hike, the trail is well prepared but you need to factor in some 3hrs of your good paced walk for the full loop. Cafe with some refreshments and snacks half way through. Best to visit Autumn-Spring due to no leaves obscuring views and waterfalls full of water
Doktor W — Google review
The parking is free, but a entrance fees apply. The fee is absolutely worth it considering the work that must have gone in creating the paths, bridges, observation decks and walkways, truly a mark of engineering skills. Safe to walk if you are careful, and have good footwear. Not suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs or anyone that isn't able to negotiate rocks, changing surfaces (which can be slippery) and heights! Amazing sets of many waterfalls of different categories, beautiful scenery and even a small snack cabin half way around in the middle of nowhere, as well as a lovely one towards the end of the walk. What a lovely village this is set in and surrounding areas are truly wonderful. Definitely go again as it's not the most strenuous of walks, and taking in all the sites and steady away take a few hours and about 4.5 miles circular. I will revisit in the winter when the water is higher, as I would imagine it's a powerful force to watch. Go check out this amazing place.
Mark — Google review
Beautiful views lovely and peaceful. I enjoyed the Waterfalls. But I won't lie, this trail is not easy in the slightest. I found it extremely difficult at times despite taking regular rest breaks. A lot of people turned back halfway through and we wondered why. The last half of the trail is mainly a hike through scenery and nothing to do with the waterfalls at all. The map does not match the trail which I found very unhelpful, there are numbers at certain points of the trail as you go along. I would suggest finishing at 8 or if you want to see the last waterfall 10. There is an ice cream van but it's another 10/15 mins after the last waterfall and is over a bridge with a steep decline and incline. Overall I'm chuffed we managed to do it in just over 3hrs but I wouldn't do it again. There is a toilet block and plenty of parking but the price seems a bit steep at £22 for 2 adults.

Acorn Bank is a National Trust property famous for its extensive landscaped gardens and charming watermill. Although visitors are unable to explore the house, there are delightful fruit and walled herb gardens available to wander around. The courtyard cafe offers open-air dining with delicious sandwiches and pasties at reasonable prices. It is an excellent location for families looking to spend time outdoors, with a nature trail, fairy houses, old mine trails, and bird-watching hide.
A lovely place to visit if you're in the area. There isn't much of the house open, which is sad. There is lovely gardens and a great walk along to the watermill and gypsum mine. The cafe was closed, but they had self serve tea/coffee for a donation.

Wonderful place to spend a few hours, lots of nice walks through the forest area and around the well kept grounds, plus a good tearoom and of course the nice book room where most of us come out with more than we went in with. Definitely a place we would revisit.👍

This is a fabulously understated place to visit, an active mill in some beautiful scenery, some excellent walks and interesting history, lots of places to enjoy and reflect on the surrounding beautiful landscape
Adrian D — Google review
An absolutely beautiful place, the gardens are truly spectacular and so calming. The greeting staff were lovely, great with our kids and the walk to the mill was very achievable. The 3-star rating relates to the cafe. In the middle of the six weeks holidays they had no kids meals Mon-Thurs (despite them being advertised) and they had nothing gluten free except a ore-packaged rice cake. I cannot comprehend why an organisation as hit as NT who charge pretty hefty membership fees cannot standardise a basic menu that caters to basic dietary requirements - and to not accommodate kids also seems a bit ridiculous. Otherwise the cafe was very clean, and the toilets were accessible.
Rebecca S — Google review
Disappointed. You can go into 3 rooms of the main house. The entrance hall, which is underwhelming. Another room which is empty. And the book shop. The grounds out front are nicely kept. The gardens are just vegetable patches. There’s a bit of a woodland walk behind it. In comparison to other sites, this was a massive let down.
Gary M — Google review
Up hill and down hill walking. Lots of bluebells and wild garlic out at the moment, water levels low due to lack of rain. Lovely walk around
Liz L — Google review
Staff were really, really friendly and knowledgeable- had a lovely chat about peonies with one of the garden team. Woodland is lovely and the gardens (and bees) were really interesting
Alistair M — Google review
Not too much to see in the house, but the gardens were good, an extensive range of rhubarb & apple trees. Nice walk around the outside of the grounds to the restored water mill, again not working for lack of water.

Farm
Smithills Open Farm, located in the picturesque Smithills Country Park, has been a beloved destination for families in Bolton and beyond. The farm offers a wide range of animal encounters, from horses and sheep to reptiles and alpacas. Visitors can also enjoy the petting corner where they can interact with rabbits, guinea pigs, and chicks. This hands-on experience not only provides animal therapy but also offers educational opportunities for both children and adults.
We are tourists visiting the area, and we had a wonderful time at Smithills Open Farm! The atmosphere was fantastic, and everyone was so kind and friendly. A special mention goes to the gentleman driving the tractor ride – he was incredibly cheerful and friendly, and made the experience even more fun. There are many different animals to see, and lots of fun activities for both kids and adults. We took part in several of the attractions and enjoyed every minute of it. The only thing we didn’t like was seeing the owls kept in very small cages, and the calves separated from their mothers, which made us a bit sad. We also noticed a sense of sadness in the eyes of the cows being milked, which was quite touching. Additionally, we believe that very young children should not be allowed to hold the animals on their own. It would be better if they could simply touch them gently under the supervision of a farm staff member, as small children often don’t yet have the awareness to handle animals carefully, and may unintentionally cause them harm. We highly recommend this place to families and tourists – it’s a great day out!

We visited Smithy Open Farm last month as a family, and it was a truly wonderful experience. The farm is well-kept and full of charm, and the animals are all very gentle and friendly — perfect for children to interact with. From calves and lambs to many other farm animals, you can really enjoy close-up encounters and even watch the process of milk production, which was fascinating to see. There are plenty of activities for children and families, and feeding the animals is made easy with affordable feed available on-site. It’s both fun and educational, giving kids the chance to experience farm life in an authentic and enjoyable way. One of the highlights for us was trying the farm’s own freshly made yogurt — it was absolutely delicious and highly recommended! Overall, it’s a fantastic place for a family day out, especially with young children. Warm atmosphere, well-cared-for animals, and plenty to see and do — we’ll definitely be coming back again.

We visited Smithills Open Farm during the school holidays with the kids, and it was such a fantastic day out! The highlight was seeing the full process of how cows are milked and how the milk is stored — really fascinating and educational. The children loved getting hands-on, feeding the cows and other farm animals, and learning more about farm life. There are so many activities for kids, and it’s a great balance of fun and education. The staff were friendly and made the experience engaging for both children and adults. Overall, a brilliant day out for families — highly recommend!

Really enjoyable family day out. Lots available for small children, from donkey and tractor rides to feeding the cows and other farm animals. Also being able to interact and hold baby lambs, baby goats, Emu's, Rabbits and chicks in pets corner. The specific animal based talks were really informative and the kids had chance to get a photo which was great. There are also a selection of parks for the children to enjoy and multiple shops were you can grab a coffee and locally produced ice cream which was delicious.

Love this place, but if something for all of us. Getting so close to the cows isn't something kids from the city get to do that often and it's great. Staff seem to love their jobs and It does make it extra enjoyable. Some of the other local farms are good for an hour or two but we regularly spend 4-5 hours here
Gareth — Google review
Every single member of staff we encountered made this day super special! They were so warm and welcoming, all made an effort to educate us on the animals and help us to get as much from the experience as possible. We loved it! P.s we’re still dreaming about the ice cream!

We brought our 9 month old granddaughter for her first visit to a farm and we all absolutely loved it. Even for a baby there is so much to do. She was obsessed with the mini horses and the donkeys ❤️ She was fighting sleep at the end so we couldn't go to meet the animals but we certainly will be doing on our next visit. The tractor ride to the donkeys made her day 🥰 Thank you all for making our first Grandparent day the best ever ❤️

Devil's Bridge is a popular spot among locals, offering stunning views along the River Lune and Ruskins View in the Yorkshire Dales. The route is mostly surfaced with only one set of steps known as Radical Steps. Visitors can enjoy facilities such as a tea wagon and WCs at Devil's Bridge, making it an ideal place for a picnic or to take a leisurely walk.
Make sure to choose this place as a perfect rest stop when entering or leaving the Lake District—it’s in a truly beautiful spot. A wide river with an expansive bed is crowned by two aesthetically pleasing bridges, surrounded by a large, green area full of trees. It’s the ideal fresh and relaxing environment. Whether you want to sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature or have a picnic, this place has you covered.

Sad to see someone jumping off the bridge, but it was a beautiful place to go and visit on a cold, sunny weekend morning. The food from the van was delicious. A few bikers were there too.
Caroline — Google review
A fantastic meeting place for bikers and families alike. I went on my Harley for the first time, parked with all the other bikes on the hottest day of the year so far. The bridge and surrounding river was packed with families and kids swimming in the Lune. It is well worth a visit. There are 2 vans - one for food and the other for ice cream, great for weather like today. The only downside is the amount of speed cameras on the surrounding roads. Totally overkill in places and designed once again to spoil the fun and ensure everyone complies with the ridiculous government in the UK.

Nice ride out to The Devils bridge on our Motorbikes today, stopped at The Devils Bridge and enjoyed a Bacon Butty and cup of tea, both very nice, enjoyed and very welcoming at food van. Very picturesque, Public toilets too

Great spot for a rest, mess about in the river, especially for the young ones. Bikers meet for a break regularly at this spot, and there is parking with toilets on the other side of the bridge, which is PEDESTRIAN ONLY. The parking by the way is FREE, which makes a pleasant change.Thebridge itself is a very tall one and quite a sight from below. There is a nice riverside walk alongside the island, we saw a couple of herons and watched one catch a small fish. The footpaths leads you to the "Radical Steps" 80 plus steps which take you up to the church and the town, but first at the top, turn right to take in the view at "Ruskin's View". A sign at the bottom of the steps says it was originally 46 steps, but I counted over 80, so they've altered them a bit. Well worth a visit.

Bowland Wild Boar Park is a rural wildlife park located in the ancient Forest of Bowland. It offers various activities such as animal feeding, tractor rides, play areas, and riverside walks. The park is home to a diverse range of animals including wild boars, owls, deer, ostriches, and meerkats.
Bowlands wild boar park is one of the best campsites I have been too. The walks here are just fantastic and quiet which we all need sometimes. It is a great get away from the busy world. The staff are friendly. The food at the cafe is delicious. I would recommend the ice creme and the lamb and mint pasty.

Mixed...please read! Make sure the cafe is open or take a picnic. The alternative provided today ( whilst very tasty) wasn't at all aimed at children and very expensive. You have to pay for everything extra once inside ( don't pay the £1 for the motorized carts...lasts about 60secs...even our 4yr olds were underwhelmed). Plus the 2 tractor rides are also extra money. The animals are lovely to feed and very gentle even with our boisterous 2.5 year old. They all enjoyed the chick stroking! Overall, been visiting for years and it's not improving. Shame as it's such a lovely idea and a great site.

A fun and fantastic day out. There is a good amount of animals to see and feed. The kids play area is big and spacious. There are some beautiful walking trails. We took a 4,7 and 9 year old and they all loved it. The food in the cafe was ok and prices how you would expect from a place like this however the car park is right there so I would be easy to bring a picnic and collect it from the car at unch. There are plenty of benches dotted around.
Deb F — Google review
Great family day out, with lost of different animals to see, they all looked well care for and happy, loved the little goat walk ❤️ Didn’t get her name but she was in the Chick handling room, she really nice to talk too, said she had been there for 4 years and loves working with the animals and you could tell she was great!! In my opinion you could have more handling sessions, not just chicks :) overall I would definitely recommend!!
Alisha D — Google review
We came as a family earlier this week and were quite disappointed. The whole place felt very tired and a bit run down. The tractor ride wasn't worth the money. Had much better days out for less money.
Michelle S — Google review
When our eldest was younger we use to bring him to the wild boar park and have since returned with our youngest. The outdoor play area is great, lots of different, swings, slides, climbing frames and zip wires for different ages. There's a selection of animals to view such as Meerkats, ducks, hens, goats, Llamas and Emu's and further round the Wild Boars of course! There's an indoor play barn with shaded seating, play kitchen and sand, a climbing rope, slide and basketball set with some play tractors. It's always great of course to purchase a tractor barrel ride, it's a highlight for the young ones and as a family we all go on the tractor ride to view the water buffalo and horses, although you can go on the adventure walk to see these. There are plenty of outdoor seating and you can bring a picnic. They did have a street food vendor onsite and the food smells were delicious but we brought our own food. We did sample the ice-cream from the shop, a bit pricey at £3 for one small scoop but it was delicious, I tried the rum and raisin. It's not a huge site but it's enough for upto 10 year olds to walk round and have fun!
Stacey R — Google review
Extremely disappointing compared to previous visits. Visited end of June, building up to the busy school holiday peak times. Cafe closed (which we didnt find out until we got in), barn had no animals and whole place very rundown. Price was reduced to 5pounds each but we still didn't get value for money. The cute piglets was the highlight. Won't be rushing g back

It's a popular destination for cyclists, hikers, and families seeking to explore miles of beautiful countryside, quaint villages, flowing brooks, and abundant wildlife.
An outstanding, tucked away area of natural beauty and stunning scenery. Almost always bypassed by travelers heading for the Lake District, this well kept secret is well worth a visit. Approached from the north side off A65, the climb to the summit provides breathtaking views to all points of the compass. Well worth a visit! 😲👍

Like many more than likely, I usually bypass the Forest of Bowland en route to/from the likes of the Lakes & The Dales. This time coming home from The Lakes I got off the M6 at Lancaster driving through the Trough of Bowland to rejoin the M6 at Longridge & what a nice little drive it was & not busy. Think I may be tempted to do it again in the opposite direction whilst heading northbound to get the great views over Morecambe Bay that were behind me on this occasion!

Shap Abbey, located on the banks of the River Lowther, was established in the late 12th century by the Premonstratensian religious order. The abbey features a striking 15th-century tower amidst its ancient ruins. Accessible via a steep and narrow road, visitors can explore the site for free and learn about its history through informative boards.
Beautiful remains from an Abbey (Shap) that was established in 1190AD by the Premonstratensians order of Canons. The site now is well marked with information about what the building and canon life would have been like during the time of operation. It sits in a beautiful area with beautiful scenery. It is a nice place to take a walk around and enjoy the outdoors. Peaceful and very scenic. A river flows through and beautiful farm land around. We loved our visit to this historical location in the UK. It is free to enter.

Shap Abbey was founded in the 12th century. The ruins are magnificent, but at the same time sad. During the Suppression of the Monasteries, the last abbey surrendered to Henry VIII’s men on 14 January 1540. All the occupants – the abbot and 14 canons – received pensions. Some of the main buildings were incorporated into a farm, but most were gradually dismantled and the materials reused - mainly in surrounding structures.
Phillip W — Google review
Well kept place. Interesting abbey ruins. Car park is small and a £2 fee for non-english heritage members. Could probably get aoput 5 cars in the car park but wasn't an issue when I visited. Worth a visit if in the area.
David T — Google review
Not far from the A6, down a small lane right by the farm. There is a small car park and then it is a short walk up to the Abbey remains. The ruins date from the 13th to 16th centuries and the tall west tower of the church dates from about 1500 - it was originally much higher. There are some useful information boards and the whole setting is very pleasant.

Wonderful place, scenic and a serene place to just let time pass slowly Be aware the approach is down a narrow road There is a hard standing car park for about 6-8 cars (£2to pay via a text number 🤔 but no signal) No amenities here From car park go right over the small bridge and along a green footpath The ruins are free to visit and definitely worth a visit if in the area 👍

Well worth a visit if you are in the area. Approximately 1.5 miles off the A6. Narrow road leads down to the Abbey ruins to a small car park. visited as an away fan, mostly pleasant experience, quick to get in and out, queue at the kiosk was quick compared to other grounds. food options are a bit poor and not amazing compared to previous visits, the stadium itself is a bit of a car park but seats had plenty of space and comfortable (not that we used them much) big plus and final bonus is for the programme seller who takes card payments, legend!

1st visit to the toughsheet Community Stadium. £8 for parking for the match and there is loads of parking spaces. You pay at the machine on leaving. The fan zone is brilliant, lots of street food, bars and toilets. A big screen playing football match was great before going in to the stadium. Staff at the ticket office very helpful and the football shop very busy. The stadium very easy to get around. We had seats in the upper north stand. Great view of the pitch. Great atmosphere from the Bolton supporters, plenty of singing. Unfortunately we only got to see Bolton play for 29 minutes before there was a medical emergency.

I visited as a disabled away fan and wow I have to say so far the best I’ve experienced. When we arrived the staff & stewards were so friendly and helpful from showing us where the accessible toilets were showing where to get food and drinks and finally showing us where we would be during the match. At most grounds I’ve visited there are normally stewards stood in the way through the game or at key moments but not at Bolton. The stewards stood off to the side so they didn’t get in the way. I think a lot of clubs and stadiums should look at how Bolton run a match day as they should get praised for the good work.

What a stadium!! Attended the Ashes Enhland v Australia and we had the best time, just drinks waiting times need seeing too it's a free for all even with the most modern technology 😀
Claire J — Google review
What is the point in producing a match programme and then not sell it around the ground? I was told it's on sale in the club shop. There's no way I sas gonna queue in torrential rain for that. Probs a trick to get fans into the shop?

Great premier league standard stadium, views brilliant top and bottom tier of away end, good food and drink selection.UTV.

Family day out watching Bolton thrash Wigan! Ground well looked after, easy to find your way around. Toilets are clean and dryers work.. always a bonus. Beer at half time, nice and cold, not sure about the cups though, filled from the bottom they tend to leak a lot!

Nature & Parks
Askham Hall is an upscale hotel located in a 12th-century country house with beautiful gardens and an outdoor pool. The restaurant, Allium, embraces a strong connection to Cumbria by sourcing ingredients from their own Kitchen Garden and the surrounding Lowther Estate. The field-to-fork ethos is complemented by elegant decor, offering a dreamy setting to savor Michelin star creations. The hotel's medieval charm is enhanced with modern art, creating a warm atmosphere throughout the property.
We have just had our wedding at Askham Hall and words cannot do the venue and the staff justice. Jenny sorted everything for us and the Askham team were not only efficient and effective but they were genuinely friendly and nothing seemed to be trouble for them. The food was superb as were the rooms. Jenny and her team gave us a wonderful day that we will never forget.

Had my son and our daughter in law wedding there on Thursday 14/8/25 what a day it was. Cannot thank the staff at Askham Hall enough for their attention and help for making the wedding day perfect. From arriving to leaving everyone was taken care of. BBQ the night before excellent and big day was amazing. Accommodation, breakfast both days and the wedding food all fabulous. A big thanks to all the team Askham for the perfect day!!!

Had a lovely walk around the gardens and lunch in the cafe. It was very busy, but there was lots of space for us all to spread out.

The Askham Hall experience was excellent. It's a wonderful location, with beautiful gardens that provide a large amount of the vegetables and herbs. The hall dates back several hundred years and you do feel like your stepping back in time. There's an honesty bar for pre-dinner drinks. Parts of the interior are worn out but somehow it helps create the character and charm. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The food is exceptional. The wine list is vast. The service is very friendly and not too formal, in keeping with the relaxed atmosphere. It's not inexpensive but if you're looking for something a little bit different and special, then I'd recommend Askham Hall.

My ceilidh band, @priceofmypig played for a lovely wedding and DJ set here recently. The staff were really excellent - polite, helpful and efficient. The venue was gorgeous with good facilities.

Just back from a 2 night stay at Askam hall for my 60th birthday celebration, a magnificent building in a stunning location. The staff, without exception were professional yet friendly and so attentive. Had the taster menu in the restaurant, every dish was delicious & presented beautifully. Great walks immediately around the hotel and further afield if you want to venture out. Thank you Askam staff for a special 60th birthday 😊

It is hard to summarise such a fabulous experience staying at Askham Hall and eating in the Allium restaurant. We were given a very warm and detailed welcome by Alice who showed us around and took us up the pele tower to our room with an dramatic view over to Knipe Scar. It was great to have a wander around the well kept gardens with everything labelled (including many Alliums...) and seeing the kitchen garden too where much of what you see will shortly be on your plate. Askham Hall had so much warmth to it, with the open fire crackling away in the main hall it really did feel lived-in. The novelty if the honesty bar was great, being left to make whatever drink you felt you could concoct or a single Lakes Gin & Tonic would suffice. As we sat with our preprandial G&T, we were brought our menus for the evening that had been printed specially where ingredients had been substituted as requested. The ever so animated Sommelier/Maitre D', Nico then came to talk us though the expansive wine list (with wines for every budget) that was beautifully bound like how I imagine it might be to read the Magna Carta. I spotted a bottle of Granite Blanc by Vincent Paris that I was reassuringly informed would be a great choice with a difference and then also discussed new English reds to pair with Rough Fell Lamb from Helton. Nico recommended the Danbury Ridge Pinot Noir that he thought very highly of and was kind enough to serve it by the glass when it was not on the wine list as an option and I did not feel like splashing out on the whole bottle. I will not go into every element of the food menu as it always changing but every dish that Chef Richard Swale produced was stunning and I was sold straight from the amuse-bouche of the green Thai curry and mackerel in a squid ink cracker cup... The service was very attentive throughout the evening and although we did not sit down at our table until 20:30 and got up from the table at nearly 23:30, throughout the dinner service of six courses and an additional cheese board, at no point did it feel like we were waiting and the time flew by as we enjoyed every morsel of food and drop of wine. The bedroom was well appointed, with a huge super king bed that was very comfy and rain head shower that felt more akin to standing under a hot waterfall. A final touch for those that know, was the excitement when we found the small bar of Penrith fudge from The Toffee Shop in our room with the coffee!

An odd experience. The rooms and common areas are very thread-bare, dated, and sparsely furnished. The restaurant was probably one of the best meals I’ve ever had (53 years). The grounds are quite nice.

Kendal Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Kendal Castle is a medieval hilltop ruin that offers stunning countryside views and a glimpse into the town's history. Once occupied by the influential Barons of Kendal, the 12th-century castle remains are a must-see attraction. The steep incline to reach the ruins is worth it for the atmospheric experience and great vistas of Kendal. Visitors can follow signposts for Parr Street Sunnyside and Kendal Castle to explore this historic site.
There's not a lot left of the castle, but it is well documented and has great views of Kendal and the surrounding countryside. There are two ways to get up there: a step path through some woods and a more gentle slope across a meadow.
Ed R — Google review
The panoramic views from the castle are worth the climb to the top. At first glance, it seems like "just some old ruins", so I would recommend downloading the Free audio-guide, which is very clear and informative.
Gromit S — Google review
Took a hike to the Kendal castle on a lovely afternoon. It is a magnificent view of the whole town from the top of the hill. Worthy of a visit!
Judy — Google review
Kendal Castle is just a short walk from the village, around 10–15 minutes uphill. The climb is gentle and absolutely worth it once you reach the top. From the castle grounds, you can enjoy a wide, scenic view of the surrounding landscape — perfect for photos or simply soaking in the beauty of Kendal. Although the castle now stands in ruins, it has been well-preserved, giving visitors a sense of its history and charm. It’s not just a historical site, but also a peaceful spot for sightseeing and enjoying the outdoors. If you’re visiting Kendal, I’d definitely recommend making time for Kendal Castle. It’s close, free to explore, and a great way to experience both the history and natural beauty of the area.

Kendal Castle is Iconic to Kendal - it's a really short walk if you park at Parr Street and can be accessed for 4 sides. Although it's pretty much just ruins - it is a lovely for sunsets and sunrises. I've even captured the Aurora from here. Great for families to explore.

Brockholes is a wetland and woodland nature reserve in Preston, offering a unique experience for nature enthusiasts. The reserve is home to rare bird species and features a floating visitor village. It hosts various family events such as craft sessions, open-air theatre, themed seasonal trails, tracking challenges, and den building activities. Additionally, it offers free guided walks and a popular school holiday club.
It was a glorious sunny day and Brockholes had been on our to-go list for some time. What a beautiful place, it's well laid out, there is a great team of volunteers to provide advice, lots of picnic tables and food walks. We will most definitely return.

A great green open space and nature reserve for birds (no dogs allowed to protect ground nesting). Good set up where you can get a bite to eat and relax inside or out. The play area was a bit disappointing for the kids as it was under construction/refurb, but in fairness it looks like they're making a good job to make it better for the future.

We had a great time at the superhero event. My children are 18 months, 6 and 7 and they all joined in the fun! From mud throwing to den building, we were all entertained for a good 2 hours! The staff and volunteers were so friendly and great with the children. Thank you!

A lovely place to go visit with family, friends or just yourself. I usually walk all the way to Brockholes from the Preston city centre but even if the walk is long, the scenery makes up for it. A lot of greenery and amazing nature at Brockholes. A chance for you to bask in the nature and atmosphere and see the views. Definitely a must visit!
Teiro A — Google review
Had a lovely walk around Brockholes nature reserve. The weather was very pleasant nice sunny autumn day. Topped off with a coffee and ice cream. The car park has gone up to £6 which doesn't seem bad for all day parking but steep if your only there for a couple of hours. This makes people like cyclist park on the roadside so they don't gave to pay. The café is closed Mon, Tue, Wed now. Since we have been going the shop and plant stall have gone. The ice cream cafe has closed. You can get a coffee from the visitors centre out of a flask but the quality is poor and they charge £2.50 a cup. I know it's volunteer led, I know there is a cost to everything but if you don't provide facilities people won't bother going.
Dave M — Google review
Ample parking, a great cafe and lots of well surfaced paths. Plenty of birds to see & photograph. The floating village is an amazing construction too.

If you love nature or bird watching you will love this place. Great for walking or picnic. Little shops there with local crafts, something to eat . Grab a coffe and enjoy the nature :)
Olga H — Google review
It's nice enough here. Well kept, good walking paths, nice cafe and visitor village. We did see a few unusual birds, some butterflies and damsel flies. The walk through the trees is lovely, like an enchanted tunnel. What did spoil it for me though, was the overwhelming traffic noise, with the site being right next to the motorway. It made the walks far less peaceful than they should have been, and made it difficult to use the bird identification app that I often use on walks. The pollution from the traffic isn't great either. That said, it's free entry, though you do have to pay for the car park, which was fairly pricey at £6 for a few hours. I'd suggest a visit if it's nearby to you, but I wouldn't travel too far or you might be disappointed.

The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal is a wonderful venue. The staff were friendly and welcoming which created a relaxed atmosphere. The food was incredible aswell all before an amazing performance by Bernard Butler. The intimate setting and great acoustics made the show even more special. Overall, a fantastic place for food, music, and good vibes!

Went to see My Baby play in October. The venue drinks were reasonably priced. Was a little hard to find the entrance as it off the main road but has a fabulous interior with plenty of seating. Sound system was amazing 🩵 The security were probably the best I have ever experienced. Really happy and super friendly! Ticket prices were very reasonably priced. Great place well done 👏 would definitely return 🩵
Helena E — Google review
We have visited twice recently. Once to the cinema which was excellent and more recently to see a show in the Maltroom. The show was fine but you should know that the venue has a flat floor and many pillars so some seats (especially towards the back) have restricted views. We ate in the restaurant - the food is ok and it's a nice place to spend some time. The staff in both venues and the restaurant are great. All in all the Brewery Arts centre is a vibrant spot for a night out in Kendal.

I've never visited before so didn't know what to expect but we accidentally arrived on pizza and pasta night. I chose the pepperoni pizza with vegan cheese for £5. It was amazing. Lakeland Maze Farm Park, located south of Kendal in the Lake District, is a delightful destination for families with young children. The park offers a variety of outdoor activities such as navigating through the UK's top maize maze, interacting with friendly animals including cows, sheep, horses, goats, donkeys and alpacas, and enjoying go-kart races and tractor rides. Additionally, there are indoor attractions like soft play areas and a pets barn where visitors can meet smaller furry friends.
Had the absolute time of our lives here in the may bank holiday. Me and my son were sharing our birthday and had so much fun. So many things to do. Lots of parking available, toilets, cafe and hand washing facilities and let's not forget the delicious ice cream shop. Outstanding value for money. All ages will enjoy this we went as a group and had age 2 as our youngest and age 80 as our oldest member and it put a smile on everyones face. We will for sure be back !
Hannah D — Google review
We had a great day out here. Very well kept, the animals were looked after, the maze was fantastic and lots of fun. Plenty to do. I was a little worried my 3 year old might not have much to play on but I was wrong, there's plenty of play for him and feeding animals. My older boy, 9, had a whale of a time on the slides as well, and we all loved the mazes. It was a really hot day and I'm the maze we felt like it was abroad due to the unusual tall corn field surroundings, felt great.

Brilliant. Worth a visit with young children for sure. My 4 year old enjoyed the slides and the tractor ride especially. There was a good play area for my baby as well. We all enjoyed the maize maze also, very memorable experience. I would certainly consider a return visit if we visit the area again.

Great day out and the prices are good for what you get. We thought it would only keep us busy a couple of hours but we ended up there the whole day (probably helped the weather was dry, but what a gorgeous spot on a sunny day!) We brushed the ponies, went on a tractor ride (which had some really interesting facts about the farm), fed the animals, played on everything, and enjoyed the soft play. I would have given it 5 stars but felt the kitchen was a little bit of a let down, the food was good but just took so long (for only 1 panini and chips!) Would recommend and will definitely be back, but would take a picnic next time to avoid hangry children (we live 1hr 20 away and it's worth the drive). Staff were lovely and friendly around the farm too!

Amazing experience. Worth the visit. Plenty of activities for kids. A day filled with fun and scenic views. Cafe on site, toilets and free parking. Farm shop has fresh eggs and lots of useful toys and stuff for kids. I highly recommend. Animal patting was my kids favourite

Just went for the first time today. Wasn't expecting much but to my surprise it was a whole lot more than just a farm! They also had go karts bouncy castles and big slade type slides! My favourite was the tractor ride the queue was a bit lengthy but it was so worth it! Beautiful scenery absolutely love this place! Staff were really nice and friendly. The only little downside were the sinks, which had really hot water in some places after you fed animals etc. Overall it was a brilliant 3 hours spent and i would definitely love to come back again!
R R — Google review
Really good family day out. The admission price included other activities such as the water balloons etc. This is very commendable as it meant no hidden costs for families, a rarity today. Families could spend a good half a day at the attraction and get great value for money. We visited as a group of 21 ranging from 5mths old to oooh, 70+ and everyone enjoyed it. Thank you. An additional benefit was the mix of beautiful cornflowers lending themselves for a few nice photos.

Haigh Woodland Park is a vast recreational area offering wooded hiking trails, a rope course, miniature railway, and golfing. It's an ideal stop for families visiting Wigan or exploring nearby attractions like the Three Sisters Racing Circuit and the Old Courts. After a refreshing walk in Haigh Woodland Park, visitors can enjoy traditional Sunday roasts at nearby pubs and restaurants.
Great park, lots of paths to walk with varied scenery leads to canal which you can walk and loop back round to the main park. Saw horse riders, cyclists, runners. The free park itself is well built with lots of challenges for the kids. Behind it was a small forest where the kids where making lean to shelters with the downed trees and branches. There is a paid high rope section however it's 8+ Also on site whilst visiting was a small amusement park. There is a square of various shops from chocolate to a pizzeria, deli, cafe and farm shop. The delivery we found to be great value and not too expensive. There are also ice cream vans dotted around if you are after a sweet treat. Parking is paid but reasonable at 3.50 for the day. Altogether it was a nice day out and would return.

Was disappointed to find the miniature train was all blocked off for maintenance, had all year but choose the first week of the summer holidays to do it, so, thought we'd go and look at the hall...nope, not possible as that was enveloped in a huge white screen, ok, so we went to the cafe and was charged £10 for a baked potato!! Parking is not free and you are not allowed to use a blue badge... had a little play area for kids and mini golf and Go Ape, " ornamental " pond was more like black slime and full of lily pads, totally neglected, lots of space for kids but lots of dogs off lead, so be careful, take a picnic too to save yourself some money
Donna P — Google review
I've been coming to this park for several years now and honestly, I feel like it is going a bit downhill. We arrived today and the two main play frames were sectioned off for repair. The funfair had stopped even though all the kids aren't back in school until at least Thursday. The go ape climbing was shut. The little train track is NEVER running when we go. It looks like it's undergoing maintenance but never seen anyone working on it. The duck pond has blue algae in it and doesn't seem like it is being treated. The main gardens with the lovely trees have been shut now for about 2 years. No idea why! The toilets are really smelly and the soap box hasn't been fixed in at least 12 months and you could really do with putting some toilets down near the smaller wooden park as I've been caught out twice there now with my toddler who needed a number 2! Luckily had bags on me for her to do it in! On a positive note, the cafes / shops are great. There's some woodland you can walk through which is good to explore. There's a range of play equipment suitable for all ages and 2 places you can play mini golf. Plenty of sit down spaces and picnic tables. Parking is cheap and you can spend hours there on a good day. The new flower garden is really lovely. There's a great little bird watching area and the shop on the way in is selling wild bird food for you to put on the tables. Wigan council need to do a lot better! This is a well used park and would be so much better with access to all areas!

We had a lovely day here. The park caters for all ages. There are 2 crazy golf's, my nearly 4 yr old grandson loved his first time playing this. The staff in the crazy golf were really friendly guy's and at only £1 per person, it's well worth visiting. We went to the cafe for lunch and the staff there are also very helpful and friendly. Only 2 highchairs available that we could see but we managed to beg one off a lady who's child had finished eating and also passed ours on after we finished with it. We also visited the small funfair. Tokens only and each token cost £2.50. Only thing I don't agree with is that the parent on the rides with small children have to pay a token too. We will definitely be going back there.

Great place for a walk, plenty to do come along and try out the Low and High Ropes course. A few places to get food and drinks.. a couple of ice cream vans and a shop. Kids park and fairground rides at weekends and school holidays. Parkrun every Saturday good route on trails which can be muddy at times it’s down hill a loop then back up the hill.
Stan B — Google review
My two children, 11 and 8, and I, had a brilliant time here yesterday. It was a little disappointing to find there's quite extensive renovation works going on at both the hall and along the miniature railway, and this is the reason for the 4☆ review - not that we minded the work at all, it's clear this is in the best interest of the hall and the miniature railway, but that there's no mention on the website or Facebook page (which I checked prior to our visit) and also that we didn't know the path passing the swan pond to complete the 1 mile circuit was closed as there was no signage until we got there. It didn't make our day any less enjoyable, as we followed the path around past the victorian kennels ruins (a huge hit), then followed the canal back to the car park, but those paths weren't suitable for pushchairs or scooters so families with younger children would've had to turn back. Our 1 mile walk turned in to a lovely 3 mile trail, which we finished off with a picnic, a few fairground rides (all very quiet, I expect due to the rides costing £2.50 each), and an ice cream from the van (£10 for 3). We did head over to the playground, but we found the equipment a bit too busy for us so we went back to find their favourite tree and had a bit of a climb before we left. £3.50 for the car park all day is a bargain when compared to other similar locations, particularly as there is so much going on here for children. We spent 4.5 hours here in total, but could easily have stayed all day, and we look forward to returning when the miniature railway re-opens as the kids would've loved this. It would just be nice to know before you travel what closures are in place, so you can plan your day accordingly.

Haigh Hall and the surrounding plantations, AKA Haigh Woodland Park are a great place for a bit of R&R. The main path through the plantations is wide and and is surfaced with tarmac making it accessible for all. It's both dog and cycle friendly with several entrances that include access from Swinley, Whelley and Haigh. As of March 2025 the main hall, a listed stately home, is currently undergoing restoration however there are many other facilities in the immediate vicinity. These include a sprawling playground for the kids, high rope adventure, mini golf, a great little bar and numerous cafes and shops. There is also a large carpark close to the facilities for those who wish to arrive by car.

Great place to take your family. CONS 1. The car park is pricey 2. The drinks at the outlet we stopped at were very pricey (£6 for a hot chocolate) PROS 1. Attractive extensive walks 2. Lots for children 3. Well laid out My advice ...bring a picnic.

Avenham and Miller Park is a picturesque riverside park located in Preston City Centre, offering a serene escape with its natural amphitheatre, Japanese water garden, and historic landmarks like the Sebastopol cannon. The park boasts miles of scenic walking paths along the River Ribble, surrounded by charming Georgian residential streets and quaint squares. Visitors can unwind amidst cultivated flowers, a Basalt rock from Giants Causeway, and a historic water fountain.
Avenham Park is an absolutely lovely beautiful scenic colourful green space. We were first time visitors planning to be a frequent visitors. Firstly, there's the park, a lovely well maintained open park space. There's a flowing river, which does what a river does, fair enough. Then we discovered an unexpected gem, a beautifully wonderful Japanese Garden! 🌲🥀🌸🏵 with a waterfall! There's also a pavilion where you can get refreshments and you can also freshen up there (yes, I'm referring to lavatorial facilities 🫢). This is a wonderful family pet friendly space, immaculately maintained - what is not to like.

Very spacious, even walkways, so it was easy to walk around. Japanese style garden was relaxing. No litter around, which is great. Near the River Ribble. It could have more Environmental Interpretation boards around to indicate some historic facts to help tourists or people interested in history. There could be some more bat boxes or bird houses installed, so encourage more wildlife. Relaxing Park and well kept. Will try and get there more often in my lunch break.

Stunning park, absolute credit to the grounds people. Japanese gardens beautiful. Such a relaxing walk, everyone seems to be chilled here, friendly and chatty. Local pub (continental) at one end or dog friendly cafe on the park (although they are missing a trick in not selling any dog treats, this would boost your profits given how busy you get with doggy visitors) Plenty of parking. Lots of families enjoying the last bits of nice weather. Football played at weekends. Guild wheel passes through so be mindful of the cyclists who seem to think everyone should move for them, other than the ignorant riders this is a top notch park.

A really nice park that anyone can enjoy. Their is a small play park at the bottom of the hill with a small but lovely cafe next to it-great for children. The area has large open grass area and multiple pathways taking you around the park, some are more "off road" than others but they are mostly well defined. As shown in my photos their are some beautiful Chinese gardens, a water fountain and large rocked areas with a man made waterfall. Overall the area is very nice for a casual walk while having facilities for both children to play and open ground for sports. The only downside I would say is its lack of security, it is rather isolated and at night I have known it to be quite rough. If the council set up better night light systems and security cameras as they have done at Winckley Square I believe this would easily be a 5* Park.

Lovely park. Not all entrances are accessible for wheelchairs and prams. We came in, or tried to, from East cliff side and it was bollards and steps so had to walk round. Very steep path all the way down the the pavilion but if you're pretty fit it's fine (I'm 8 and a half months pregnant). Lots of places to sit, lovely little cafe selling ice cream and barm cakes with bacon/sausage. Lovely stroll along the river ribble, wide flat paths perfect for pram, wheelchairs, runners and cyclists. Small park for the kids next to public toilets. They were clean enough but very dark. These were not wheelchair accessible and dis not have changing facilities for babies. We took a picnic and a football which was perfect. Lots of dog walkers and it was dog poo free (Lots of bins located around it). Unfortunately when we were there an idiot on a motorbike with a balaclava on riding close up to everyone including children. I'm guessing this is probably a one off and not a reflection of the park itself.

Lovely park respectfully used by most. Nice walk along edge of river or just sit and enjoy. Park is a bit hilly but something for everyone. Cafe looks nice food is nice but be prepared to queue. Queued for hot food only yo be told to come back in 30 mins as they were too busy ( hardly anyone in, basically everyone wanted ice creams but it was the same queue. No organisation.) Park however lovely and toilets in cafe and separate block in Park.

Located at Turbary Woods Sanctuary in Preston, the Owl & Bird of Prey Sanctuary is a haven for protected raptor species. Run by dedicated volunteers, this avian center offers flying demonstrations and treasure hunts for kids. Visitors can embark on a global journey as they encounter majestic lions and giraffes from the African Savannah, as well as endearing elephants and orangutans from Asia. Guests have praised the sanctuary's informative bird air show and the opportunity to interact with beautiful owls.
Brilliant day! The team of volunteers are wonderful, friendly and kind. They take such good care of the birds and are great with the audience, especially the children. So many beautiful owls and birds of prey. If you watch the 12.30 display there’s plenty of opportunities for the kids to help fly the birds and the volunteers are very knowledgeable and entertaining. The thing I loved is that the place isn’t polished and aimed at rinsing money out of tourists, it’s all about the birds and making sure they are cared for and understood. A little hidden gem. Thank you for having us, we’ll be back!

Absolutely brilliant! What a wonderful experience and to be able to get up so close to these beautiful animals. We bought the owl experience for my brothers birthday and he loved it! He couldn't stop smiling! All the volunteers are very knowledge, friendly and passionate about the birds and the sanctuary. I love the fact it's not commercialised. Its all about the birds and creating a safe and natural environment for visitors to enjoy too. Thank you for having us and allowing us to take photographs of a very memorable day.

Great sanctuary to see owls and bird of prey up close. The volunteer guides were informative and friendly, and all guests can experience handling some birds during the flight display show. Highly recommended place to visit and hope to get another chance to come again! =^^=

We found this place while looking for something to do on our journey back to north wales from the lake district. What an absolute gem of a place. It's £12 entry you get to see the various birds in the aviaries. There is also a flying display in the price at no extra cost. The display was absolutely fantastic finding out about the individual birds you also get the birds flying to your hand also. This place isn't a big company owned place. It's run by volunteers. All the money they receive goes to the care and feeding of the birds. I would highly recommend this place if your in the area.
Alix D — Google review
Great little place. All volunteers which you can tell really love the birds they look after. The show was really good and got to hold one. No show will be the same because the birds will only do what they want to do, which is great they are not forced to do anything.

What a lovely little place. It's run by volunteers who are lovely. There is an array of owls and some birds of prey. It is £12 to get in and they also have consessions. It opens at 11am (ish) and closes at 2pm. From 1230pm to 2pm there is a flying display. This is very informative and you get to fly the birds. You can get a drink, hot or cold and snacks but there is not a cafe as such. I must reiterate just how nice the volunteers are. Will definitely go back again.

What a little gem, just under 30 minutes from home! We spent around 3 hours here and the time absolutely flew by. The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and you can really feel how much they care for the birds. The flying display was a highlight: not only spectacular to watch, but also full of interesting facts that we learned along the way. The sanctuary is run entirely by volunteers, so every penny goes directly towards the care and upkeep of the birds. They do take card payments, but if you can, bring some cash along as it helps them avoid card fees and means more support goes straight to the upkeep of the sanctuary. We also got a great local tip for lunch afterwards at The Farmers Arms, just a few minutes away, which rounded off the day perfectly. Highly recommend a visit - we’ll definitely be back!

This place was absolutely fantastic!! Such a special day. I came with my family and immediately the staff are super friendly and helpful, they all clearly have lots of passion for the birds they care for. the displays are wonderful, you get a good view of the birds and get to see them up close. All the birds have educational signs posted to their enclosures about the species and conservational status so it's super great to teach children too. There are many birds to see, along with a small park to roam in and you can make a day out of it with a picnic. The best part by far were the Owl showings. It's an intimate little gathering where the volunteers show the owls up close, out of enclosure, and even give you the oppurtunity to hold and feed them. This is of course, only if the owls feel up to it, which is my favourite part about it, as it puts my mind at ease knowing the best interest is in the animals rather than the audiences entertainment. The Owls were super friendly and playful the day I went, and so were the volunteers, who really just have so much love for these birds, and make sure that each and every member of the audience get to participate fully. All this for a relatively cheap price considering the experience, can't recall the exact amount but it was worth every penny!! Aboslutely recommend for anyone who loves birds, animals or has kids with a passion for learning and nature

WWT Martin Mere

Mentioned on

Nature & Parks
Nature preserve
WWT Martin Mere is a beloved wildlife haven that recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. It offers stunning views of Lancashire's countryside and an impressive array of well-cared-for wildlife. The center provides activities such as canoe safaris, a beaver webcam, and a themed play area, making it an ideal destination for visitors of all ages. With its diverse bird species, including flamingoes, the site is popular among nature enthusiasts.
Martin Mere is, without a doubt, one of the best family-friendly days out in the north west — and our family cannot recommend it highly enough. We joined with a family membership and were immediately impressed by the outstanding value for money. Every member of our group had a different favourite experience, which really speaks to the range and quality of what’s on offer here. Accessibility is clearly a top priority at Martin Mere, and they’ve done a wonderful job. One of our family members uses a wheelchair, and it was such a relief and joy to find that nearly all areas — including the beautifully maintained hides — are wheelchair accessible. The pathways are wide, well-surfaced, and easy to navigate, making the whole reserve feel inclusive and welcoming. Our 7-year-old was in absolute heaven spotting birds, pond dipping (at no extra cost!), and getting creative in the craft room (a small charge to make badges, but totally worth it). But for me, the true standout was the canoe safari. For just £12, you get an hour of peaceful paddling around a winding waterway where ducks, geese, and their adorable babies glide right by. It’s an unforgettable experience — calming, immersive, and a unique way to connect with the wildlife. The staff running the canoe safari were absolutely wonderful: friendly, helpful, and clearly enjoy what they do. What makes Martin Mere so special is the balance it strikes between curated habitats and more natural, wild-feeling wetlands. There’s a sense of wonder around every corner, whether you’re looking a thoughtfully designed enclosure of otters or a quiet, secluded hide. If you're looking for a place that combines education, adventure, tranquility, and accessibility — Martin Mere is it. We’ll be returning again and again.

A wonderful place to spend some time in nature. A large site with a variety of walks and hides for those happy to walk a bit further from the main area. Lots for kids to do in the inner area with ponds and different birds to look at and a restaurant too. Wheelchair and pushchair friendly paths and most of the hides are very accessible and some have an upper level. Very well managed and lots of information about what you can see, recommend a visit if you're nearby.
D. M — Google review
Today was my first visit. This place is brilliant for kids of all ages to explore wildlife, we saw many species of birds, ducks and geese. The facilities are great for wheelchair users and prams most of the grounds are easily accessible. My kids also loved the new splash walk and wildlife garden, as well as the splash area. Unfortunately we ran out of time and didnt get to use the play ground but it looks great. I think prices are fair as you can easily spend a whole day here immersing yourself in the wildlife and all activities on offer. We missed the educational sessions but would like to do them next time. The cafe is a bit expensive but nothing out of the ordinary these days, would recommend you bring a picnic as there is plenty space designated for this. Recommend a change of clothes and wellies for the wet activities. Will gladly return again soon!
Yasmin A — Google review
My daughter absolutely loves birds and this was her paradise! Babies absolutely everywhere (end of may). The route around is easy to follow with lots of things to do. Plenty of beautiful picnic spots and i do advise taking one. The wild walk requires wellies in some parts especially after rainfall but we managed most parts without. The parks are good for young kids, my 8 year old loved them, my 12 year old not so much. Water play is involved so maybe spare clothes if they like to get wet. We spent around 3.5 hours here and parking was free, there was plenty of spaces when we arrived at 10.30 but people were struggling at 2pm. P.s control your children and do not allow them to chase the birds trying to scare them! We witnessed this numerous times!

We’ve been visiting Martin Mere for many many years and it’s always a lovely day out. Things to consider: You can buy bird seed to feed the ducks on the way in, I would suggest you buy more than one bag though as there are many different varieties of ducks over a wide area and it’s quickly used up on the ducks as you first enter the place. There are hides dotted around the reserve which gives you some great viewing of our feathered friends. Watch out for the otters who are fed daily, they are cute to watch. The volunteers there are very friendly and helpful and happy to answer any questions you may have. There’s a cafe which sells both hot and food cold, the hot chips are always on my mind when I’m there. There’s a few play areas and it’s lovely to take the young kids there to explore and enjoy the fresh air. There’s also a shop that sells a whole range of lovely stuff including T-shirts, books and local jams and chutneys. All in all a lovely day out.

A great day out. Plenty of parking available, including disabled. Friendly and helpful staff. My mother-in-law was able to hire a mobility scooter for £10 despite not pre-booking. Tonnes of ducks, lots of different breeds. Plus flamingoes and otters. We only got round about 40% of the place in our 4 hour stay so will definitely go back. Plenty of toilets. Refreshing that these were clean and well looked after too. A number of playgrounds and water play equipment. Lots of picnic benches. Cafe was expensive. In good weather, bring your own picnic! A well stocked (but also very expensive) gift shop. We pre-booked a boat ride, which was lovely. Canoes also available. We will definitely return. A great day out for all of us. 10% off tickets if you book online.
Marie F — Google review
We went on a dull day. There was a lot of brown ducks. Im sure if you know your duck they were different. There are storks and flamingos. There are a couple of play areas. One wet play so take a towel and possibly a change of clothes. There is a Reed bed walk off the car park which we walked part way.

Affinity Lancashire Outlet Shopping in Fleetwood is a great destination for family fun during half term, with circus events featuring performers like Louby Lou and Jimmy Juggle & Stilts. The outlet houses over 40 top brands and designer outlets, offering high-quality clothing for men and women, including t-shirts with funny prints, caps, scarves, and shirts. Visitors can enjoy discounts at the mall's many nice shops and grab a bite at the selection of cafes available.
Affinity is a lovely place for a relaxed wander. The shops are well-maintained, clean, and offer a laid-back vibe. It’s great that many of them are dog-friendly too. While I don’t tend to spend hours here, there are some really nice touches for families, including treasure hunts and a play area to keep the kids entertained. There’s a real community feel to the place, and if you fancy a stroll, a walk down to the docks is always enjoyable – especially if you’re into checking out the boats in port. It’s great having something like this right on our doorstep.

If passing its worth nipping in but don't expect to much. When this first opened as Freeport years ago it seemed to have better retail units and a little buzz about the place but unfortunately the retail units left aren't quite the standard they once was and it now lacks atmosphere. It's OK if you're within the area but not worth a special journey.
Duncan M — Google review
Not a full day out but perfectly good for a couple of hours or an afternoon's shopping. They've got a body shop which is fantastic now they're mainly online, a salt rock which I didn't know had stores up here and a couple of other good one's. The furniture sale area of Next was particularly good, some excellent bargains, but as I was swinging by on the way to the Lake District it wasn't viable to buy anything sadly. It isn't somewhere I'd travel to specifically as I don't live locally to it, but I'm glad I went and I'd go again if I was passing that way.
Craig D — Google review
We walked here from the Ferry as I wanted to buy a hat on a cold day so walked direct (see what I did here) to Sports Direct on the map. Except sadly, despite being right outside the store we then couldn't get in as the only pedestrian access point is right down the other end of the strip so it would've taken us easily another 20-30 minutes to walk to Sports Direct and back. By this point, not only did I have cold ears, I now also had a foul mood and started to behave like a toddler. We therefore gave up and went to Asda instead where I cheered up with some sweets and a nice new hat. Really needs to consider that not everyone drives here and add a pedestrian access point near to the McDonalds. I'm sure it's ok inside, but we never got that far. I did however, get a nice hat. Thanks George @ ASDA!

My wife, our 4 year old daughter and I visited this week, as we were in the area - and we are so glad we did! So many animals to see, including donkeys, sheep, lambs, goats, chickens, highland cow, peacocks, turkeys and can also hold smaller animals such as guinea pigs, chicks, rabbits, rats - and even stroked a snake! Paddy the pig a personal favourite! So much to do there, including parks, bouncy inflatable, indoor play/ball pit, eating area and cafe. Absolutely well worth a visit and we'll definitely be back again!

We love it here, always visit when we're staying at Cala Gran down the road. Reasonably priced, very open, lots of animals to see and play parks/areas dotted around for the kids. Great place to spend a few hours. The food in the tractor shed restaurant is lovely as well.

It was our first time here with my husband, daughter (5), kids Grandparents, Sister in-law and Nephew (5) and I must say we were pleasantly surprised. The layout was good, it had a great outdoor play park and an indoor inflatable play area. An onsite museum that's larger than it looks. A good range of animal and feed. Everywhere was easily accessible. It was a lovely little farm and enjoyment was had by all.

Absolutely amazing!!! Farm was a good size with lots of animals to see and they where all so friendly, tractor ride is good fun for everyone and lots of indoor and outdoor play areas for the children. All the staff where lovely but a special shout out to the two gentlemen in the museum part one who built his own penny farthing that was on show and the other who has worked in many mueseums this being his favourite, they where absolute gems, they went out of their way to make us feel welcome and not only teach us about things we never knew but had amazing conversations about everything there if I could have I'd have taken them home with me their stories and information went above and beyond what you would get anywhere else. It gave us so much more of a better experience as they had lived and worked with some of the things teaching us how everything worked and some of it still did. They made this experience the best it was such a heartwarming experience!!!

Fantastic afternoon out with the wife, lovely and quiet (early Oct visit). My wife went round in her mobility scooter and she found it easy to get round. Very accessable into all the enclosures. All the animals are well looked after and nice to see ongoing improvements around the zoo. Looking forward to returning next year with our grandson

10/10 brilliant day out. We spent about 4 hours here. Loads to see, lots of animals. We even saw the baby elephant too. Food was handsome bit quite pricey, we bought online lunch tickets so turned out a bit cheaper. Take your walking shoes though.
Kelly F — Google review
Great zoo, lots of animals to see, and enclosures are well designed to allow outdoor and indoor viewing. It was quite cold and wet when we went, but we were still able to see all of the animals even if they were sheltering inside. We were told that a baby elephant had been born very recently and were really lucky to be able to see her in the afternoon when it was quieter. Lots of maps and well signposted so you can easily see where each animal habit is located. Quite a bit of expansion and improvement work on some of the enclosures (giraffes, wolves) so some areas were closed off, but still plenty of places to see those animals. Only seemed to be one main food area on the site, which got very busy because of the weather. Lots of picnic benches but very few under cover. I think there are a few other little food and coffee booths but they were closed when we went past them. Halloween theme for Half Term, lots of skeletons and spider webs added to the trees and walkways, clearly a lot of effort made to create the atmosphere, was a lot of fun trying to spot the little things that had been hidden away. Wizard themed event trail for the kids to follow. We had paid for tickets through a promotion at our hotel, but there was only a separate queue for members, everyone else waited in the same line so no apparent advantage for pre-booking online.
Steve E — Google review
Really fantastic zoo, went in with lower expectations as have enjoyed some of the larger zoos in the UK, however this one packs souch in while remaining fairly small to walk around (which is a huge plus, especially with kids!). Good range of different animals, the gorillas and the baby orangutan especially were great to see. Big plus that the restaurant has decent options plus a Subway inside so you're well served for a quick lunch too.

A great place to visit, just the right size, so you can spend quality time with each exhibit. Loved seeing the baby elephant, amazing. Each enclosure looks well looked after & new things going on. The only thing which I would like to see is somewhere enclosed for people who brought packed lunches, it was raining at lunchtime when we went & not any dry places to sit & eat. The zoo is good value & great if you have Tesco points to swap. Would recommend a visit to this lovely zoo.
Helen D — Google review
This is a smaller zoo that is making big improvements to the animal enclosures. Membership is reasonable and visited October during wizarding and Halloween activities. The staff are friendly except staff member on train who was making it clear he wasn't happy with the train not working correctly. The tigers are beautiful and recent baby elephant is worth the trip alone!!
Rachael G — Google review
Brilliant zoo. The elephant house currently has reduced opening hours to support the wellbeing of the new baby. Loved the Halloween pop up shop and quest. Can get busy but there is ample parking and once inside there is enough space to not feel busy. Beware of seagulls trying to steal your bucket of chips!

Such a lovely park. Plenty of different areas, lovely to walk around with or without dogs. Lots of different paths, park never feels too crowded. So many beautiful places to have picnics. I absolutely love coming here. Staff in cafe and ice cream stalls are lovely too. Lovely wildlife there too.

Nicely kept park with a feature fountain, gardens, lake and trails. Nice cafe for refreshments, toilets and a car park. Lovely place to walk and see wild birds. A little ice cream stall sells bird feed and the birds will eat from your hands. Sug at the bird feeding station at the lakeside and watch them feed and the squirrels raid the bird food too. A few rats as always when by water but of no bother as thrh ketp their distance. If you're like me you'll still enjoy seeing everything and a few rodents. Boats to be hired. Looks available but charged sadly, something that should be free in a park really but otherwise great.

A delightful open green space with lots of features that could keep the whole family occupied for hours and offers a complete contrast to Blackpool's town centre and sea front. I loved walking around Stanley park and it took me backvto my childhood days, when i last came here. I did want to get on one of the lions for a photo opportunity, but i was worried id get stuck and a air ambulance would be called to help get a guy, in a denim miniskirt off a lion! I didn't get chance to go on a boat on the lake, but it did look fun. The cafe was excellent and the lady who served us was really nice. The cheesecake was to die for.

Haven't been to Stanley Park since I was a boy - despite regularly visiting Blackpool! Visited the park today with wife, daughter and two dogs - little girl loved it, especially the play area and the lake. Grabbed an ice cream, fed the ducks, geese and swans (bird feed available for £1 from the ice cream stall near the boating lake). Lovely park and kept exceptionally clean and tidy.

Visited on a dry sunny Saturday in May and the fairground wasn't busy meaning hardly any queues. Good for kids under the age of 12 as there is a wider range of rides they can go on. Tip: If you book in advance online you can get it cheaper (we did this whilst stood outside) Some rides out of action and parts of the park looked very tired and could do with lots of attention to spruce them up. Overall, an average park which offers cheaper admission than others so would recommend a visit whilst in Southport

I attended the Paws in the Park event on Saturday 28th June as part of the Preston Agility Dogs Team. We had a brilliant day and Marri who organised it with the team couldn’t have done any more to help. For their first dog event like this in the short time they arranged it all I think they did a brilliant job, everyone on the team had a great day including all our dogs, we were made to feel welcome and appreciated and enjoyed all our interactions with all staff who were happy to chat to us - even Captain Jack Sparrow left his important jar of dirt to come and watch our display! We had 3 set times we did our shows which were advertised on boards around the dog section of the park. I would be very happy to come back next year with my agility team and watch the show get bigger and better. My only feedback would be to put all the dog stalls and events in the same area so we are all in one big section together, with a few more stalls which I have no doubt doggy people would love to join next year it will be a fantastic yearly event Thanks to all involved

Adventure coast dog show. Travelled for what we thought would be a day out. For an advertised dog show. Absolutely rubbish 2 stalls and a photographer. 1 stall told us they didn't like the breed of dog we had many off. So poor and disappointing worse dog show ever visited. Staff didn't even know it was on or where it was. Asked for refunds miss sold , told no.

Southport Pier is a historic 19th-century iron walkway, the oldest of its kind in the country and the second longest pier in the UK at one kilometer. Visitors can take a tram ride along its length to enjoy views of Blackpool and even the North Wales coast on clear days. The pier features a tiny museum, vintage penny-operated arcade machines, and a pavilion where you can relax with a cup of tea.
Pier was closed for repair on my visit a restaurant with balcony bar fish and and chips ect eat in or take out lovely lake with boating swans and birds funfair trains model railway and kings gardens play area water jets amusements lots to see and enjoy with family friends for day out or holidays

Went as a spontaneous trip around 7/8 at night and the beach was still lively and amazing. Watched the sunset as we sat on the beach

March 2025. Good news everybody! Oh apologies, my mistake, that was for another topic. Truth is there is no good news for the Pier and I predict the tolling of the death knell has picked up intensity. It appears that Sefton Council has had two fingers from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and that a meagre £10 million grant is not forthcoming anytime soon. Hey, here's an idea, next year you're going to need more money to fix the pier because the bloody thing is being trashed by the elements and can be seen visibly rotting like a dead horse in a meadow. Southport is suffering: the streets are practically deserted during weekdays and weekends are hardly thronged. This is my personal opinion but the Pier is ultimately destined for a lingering death: this pier is no more, it has ceased to be, it's expired and gone to meet its maker. It's a stiff, bereft of life, it's kicked the bucket, shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir. Watch this space folks for more sad news about this once treasured splendour's untimely end. Update December 2024. It's been almost two years since the Pier was deemed unsafe to walk along it's historic boardwalk. Have I good news for fans of this Victorian treasure? No. The Pier is still in a sad and sorry state, it's rotten frame extending towards a slate grey horizon and mired in the saltmarsh clogged mudflats, desperately seeking a saviour to throw a lifeline to save it from the slurry brown soup of the relentless Irish Sea. Sad days. Update July 2024. We have a Labour MP in Southport for the first time so let's hope it's not a pig in a poke of a vote and something akin to a starting gun is fired on the pier's restoration. The cost isn't just in the repair itself but in the lost revenue for businesses and the local economy and Southport's image as a tourist destination. Update June 2024. No change. Still closed and rotting away from neglect. If I wasn't so cynical then I would believe it's going to be repaired to its former glory and not be left to rust into the Irish Sea by the local Ostriches who are allegedly in authority. Currently closed for repairs due to damage discovered in December 2022. It's a seemingly endless process of inspections with no proposed date for reopening as of March 2023. It's a good job it's not a main attraction or a building that Southport is famous for and that attracts tourists, isn't it Sefton Council? Great for a stroll whatever the weather.

Very busy on weekends/ school holidays so be prepared to que for your fish n chips, rides etc. Fantastic views on the lengthy promenade with ample places to stop for a rest & refreshments. We loved the Penny arcade train ride. It took us right the way along the promenade & only cost a couple of quid return. Quit clean & tidy considering most of the bins were full to the brim. Huge thumbs up to all the staff working their socks off to please the crowds 👍

A busy but fun place to take the family. The beautiful Pier had a small train that will take you out and back should you get tired. There's food and an arcade at the end of the Pier to enjoy as you sit and watch the waves. Even enjoyable to visit during the winter.

Beautiful day out. Plenty of places to eat. Lovely town. Free parking for disabled blue badge. Pretty shops well worth investigating. Very friendly local people. Will certainly be going back. On the pier there were free loos.

It was a lovely long walk down the pier with little trains riding up and down the sea was so far out couldn't see it but the walk was nice to the end, a bit breezy but relaxing. Had a latte and a very sad ham and cheese sandwich which I hardly ate as it wasn't the best. Then rode the little train back, they even take card payment for the ride £4 return or £3 thats adult price unsure of other concessions one way was worth it, especially for the experience.

Had a leisurely walk to the end of the pier 🥵🥵 WOW!!! Was it warm!!!! Enjoyed an ice cream and a brew, before jumping on the train for the return journey. Thoroughly enjoyed it, in the lovely hot weather and can't wait to do it again! (We must be mad!!! 😂)
