This is possibly the best beach I have been too. This beach has swimming pools, hot tubs, children's park, restaurants, boat and surf hire on it. The beach is wide and the sea is so carm due to the rocks that enclose it. Safest beach for children of all ages. Fantastic! This is real Italy and a great town to relax even with the kids!

The facility is clean and easy to explore, with plenty of interactive areas for kids. Highly recommend for a fun and educational day out!
Ivana ( — Google review
Overall it was a good experience. However, we were (due to numerous reviews) expecting a bit more animals/things to see. E.g. we visited the yellow path in 5 min, definitely something that could be merged into another path or perhaps extended. Parking cost us 5 euros and I am afraid we even landed in the wrong one (on the hotel side). Not sure if the other parking (larger) had the same price. Advice to buy tickets in advance cause they are cheaper and you avoid waiting time jn the cashiers
Mat C — Google review
Good program if it's raining. The aquarium wasn't bad at all, it just wasn't that good. The sooner you buy tickets online, the cheaper. Definitely buy tickets online, because then you don't have to wait 30+ minutes in the queue. The shark are the main attraction and you'll understand why, they're massive and scary 😂 ideal trip for families as there are also dinosaurs, otters etc.
Kateřina B — Google review
We had a wonderful day but it was very very hot and it was difficult to find shady spots to picnic if you weren’t actually eating at the restaurant or bar as all of the picnic benches in the shade got snatched up immediately! More shaded areas would really make a difference for this otherwise great attraction, especially in the dinosaur world! I would go again, but not in summer!
Elissa P — Google review
The prices are very reasonable, and all the animals are adorable. The penguins were so friendly, and the staff was incredibly helpful. Highly recommend!
Miklós F — Google review
Really nice aquarium with lots to see for old and young. There also lots of other attractions like dinosaurs, insects and so on, but the aquarium was most impressive to us.
Julian B — Google review
There are a lot of different kinds of fishes, but despite the huge area, only half of the exhibition was interesting. Nevertheless, kids were happy, especially in the dinosaur area.
Maksym G — Google review
Very suitable for children to visit. I took my little one to visit on August 22nd. It was a very pleasant experience. I especially liked the blue pavilion. I bought the tickets on the official website, which was very convenient.

Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, opened in 1972, is a renowned motor racing circuit that hosts top-level events for both two and four-wheelers. Located in the district of Santa Monica, it spans an area of about 600 thousand square meters with a capacity of 75000 visitors. A legendary circuit near Rimini. A lot of motorcycles and car races happen throughout the year. Most races have free tickets, except for MotoGP and few other championships. Check the Misano Circuit website for details of the events
Sal S — Google review
Absolutely amazing racing track. I spent an unforgettable racing weekend at Misano circuit. My overall experience was simply perfect. I had the chance to watch the race at tribuna C which allowed me to see couple of corners and turns at the end. The narration and big screens were adequate for us to follow the race when the riders were not at our sight. The shops were colorful and the organization was really good. I liked it a lot.
Can C — Google review
I raced here for three days. Everything is clean. Far better as I am used to. I like Italian circuits.

I visited the motogp 12-14 september. The organization of the event was perfect. Our seats in the grandstand were duplicated, but the staff acted adequately and solved the problem. Thanks to Francesca and Marco from the security who helped us!!!

What an wonderful experience. The event is very exciting, if you want to go to a moto GP I certainly recommend Misano. Italy is a good destination, the people, the food, the ambiance. We stayed in Rimini and had the best weekend ever. Renting a car is recommended.

Castello di Gradara

Mentioned on
+9 other lists
Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Castello di Gradara is a hilltop medieval castle featuring brickwork turrets, battlements, and a museum of history. The castle is steeped in a tragic story akin to that of Romeo and Juliet, inspiring renowned writers like Byron and Dante. The area surrounding the castle offers diverse landscapes ranging from mountainous terrain to art-filled cities such as Urbino and Ascoli Piceno, as well as the beautiful beaches of Conero Riviera.
This place is well worth a visit if you are in the area. You can wander around in the walled town for free. The castle itself is 10 euros and a walk along a bit of the castle wall for 2 euros. Both are worth doing. National Trust would charge 20 quid for the castle in the UK. The bit of wall was short but the views are stunning. It's a big tourist draw so bars and restaurants are a bit more expensive than the norm in the area but some nice places to eat or have an ice cream. We went late may. I would guess it will be crowded in peak season.
Chris W — Google review
I visited on a rainy day during the off-season, during the week. It was packed with school classes, which is great! Just beware, if that bothers you. There are multiple parking lots and plenty of space. The old town around the Rocca hosts multiple souvenir stores and plenty of restaurants. The Rocca itself is said to be the place of Dante's divine comedy and is popular for Lucrezia Borgia. It's rather small but interesting. I rated it 3 stars because it's small and not a lot to see compared to other places. You can bring small dogs in a carrier or a bag pack.
Cordee S — Google review
The best castle I've seen so far. A walk along the walls and amazing views for only 2 euros. Inside without a guide 10 euros. Everything is very nice. I recommend
Ivo H — Google review
This is one of the most beautiful castles in the world. If you get entrance ticket you will get also access to the walk around the castle walls with incredible view. Parking 🅿️ 1.80 EUR per hour. Entrance ticket to castle 12 EUR.
Tatiana — Google review
Beautiful castle and beautiful old town on the way ro castle Gradara. However, I didn't appreciate that I should buy the audio guide extra additionally to the regular entry fee on some barely working app so I did the exploring myself. Another issues are that you are barely allowed to see just a tiny portion of the castle (rest is prohibited) and a good chunk of the shown art and furnitures is from the 1920s (previous owner) and not the originals from the 14th/15th hundreds. Enough of my complaints, it is still worth a visit! ;-)
Torsten G — Google review
Beautiful castle, be sure to visit (€10,- p/adult, kids till 18 are free entry) in combination with the guardwall (€4,-p/adult, €2,- p/child) in combination is best buy (€12,- p/adult)! It is wise to put on some comfy shoes. The inside of the castle is impressive amd the views are amazing.
Sander H — Google review
The tower isn't opened to public which kinda sucks because the view would be perfect. Loved it anyway. The passage around the wall is worth the price.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Beach of the Two Sisters is a picturesque sandy and pebble beach known for its two large rock formations, offering visitors the perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing. This stunning coastline boasts white sand and crystal clear waters, reminiscent of the Caribbean. The beach has been awarded with a blue flag in 2019 and is named after the two prominent stacks that are popular photo spots on social media.
I went on June, 4th 2023. The water is cold, there is a lot of sun, so I went inside super fast. It was a little bit windy. The beach is clean. I left early because began raining around 2:30. All these days the rain has been like that. I rented 2 chairs and an umbrella for 25 euros. There is a restaurant on the beach, it was full. The beach is big and on one side is the mountain le due sorelle “two sisters”. The parking lot! Important this… Drive all the way inside close the mountain and park there. It’s the same price than the one at the beginning of the park. I didn’t know this and you have to walk more from the first parking.
Maria K — Google review
Super hike trail, not for everybody, not for kids as well, somewhere is very steep, need climb up and down but the beach worth it!!
Aurimas B — Google review
Loved it! Beautiful, clean beach with amazing views of sea and mountains. Great food at the restaurant at the beach. Make sure you've got change for the parking as you can't pay by card. Would come back any time 🌞🌊
Katarzyna S — Google review
A beautiful beach. You can get there by boat or by foot, however the road to the beach is difficult and requires some climbing.
Lev O — Google review
It was an excellent boat ride with panoramic views a must if you come to Ancona yet the beach is a good beach but not great with so many people 😢
Rene A — Google review
We made last minute reservation to see how a turtles are released into the sea. Although we expected a lot more from this trip, for example at least more furthers, but there was only one. The experience was still amazing. The boat ride was fun and beautiful. A lot less people than usually due to COVID 19. The boat staff was helpful when getting off. When we arrived at the Beach of the two sisters, we had to climb down the ladder. This was fun! 😁👌Although this trip was planed to leave at 5pm, therefore we got no sun as we arrived on the beach. It was quite dark. The sun there leaves around 3pm. You can also plan to go to this beach in the morning and stay until afternoon in order to just enjoy a private view and swim.
Elena V — Google review
Most beautiful place on the Adriatic coast on Italy ( in this region). Nice water, nice beach, perfect restraint. The only problem is it’s very difficult to park the car after 9 am from the end of may till middle of September!!! There is a public parking at the top, from where to walk about 20 minutes down.
Natalia R — Google review
A wonderful beach, though rather crowded. A pleasant boat trip from Numana, I found the 25-euro ticket a bit too high, but I guess a more popular fare would get the beach even more crowded.
Massimo S — Google review
Beautifull beach that is very quiet.. That is untill the boatload of tourists gets dumped on the beach. The tour boats ruined the place. Tip: Get there early before the boatload of tourists. When the boatload of tourists arrives just leave in the direction of Portonovo. There are a few beaches that are free off the boatload of tourists.

Spiaggia Sassi Neri, also known as Black Rock Beach, is a picturesque and rustic destination located near the Conero mountain. The long stretch of coastline features clear blue waters and dark rocks that create a striking contrast with the sea. This natural beach is ideal for snorkeling due to its deep waters and is perfect for those seeking relaxation away from the crowds.
Beautiful beach with all necessary amenities - it has beach beds and umbrellas to rent, toilet, outdoor shower, snack & drink bar and a restaurant. A bit of a climb so best if you can grab a bus on the way back. There are also stairs at the very end to reach the beach so it won’t work for people that aren’t mobile.
Anya L — Google review
Beach was good . After evening, it is being full of waves and there's no sun so be carefull! There's a bar nearby that is selling almost everything, but its nothing special. There's also a public transportation ( a gren bus) that can bring u from the beginning of the way down to the end and its all free, but be carefull, the last ride is at 18.30, so organise yourself in order to be at the bus stop around 18!!
Gianmaria A — Google review
This place is WOW!!! The rocks on the shore as you walk further down the beach aren’t slippery. Just the waves will get you a bit, other than that amazing view on the other side of the big pink rock. If you want to experience something unique and pink this is the place!
Elena V — Google review
August 6. Arrived at the public parking area 12:15. Guard said parking is now closed and will open again 1 o’clock, luckily he opened again 12:40. €10 for the whole day. Two sunbeds with umbrella €24 or 26 if you also want the bus ticket back. Restaurant is available.
Kurt E — Google review
Really beautiful beach!!! The water is clear and there is a lot to see underwater for people interested in a bit of snorkeling. Clean and not overly full of people. From the city of Sirolo there is maybe 20 minutes on foot and a bit more to return, but it can be done by everyone (I had with me a friend that is the opposite of athletic and he was able to do it...grumbling but he did)
Anna B — Google review
'Sassi neri" is a renowned beach close to the Conero mountain and it's, for sure, a very nice place where to spend a day with a family or friends. But let's start from the beginning. After leaving your car in a parking you can choose between taking a bus or two different trails. First dirt road is not for children and not for unhealthy people. Don't take it also if you have only flip_flops because it's steep and dangerous. Second one is a normal road but steeper than the other. (If you take this solution you can also ask for bus service that cost 2 euro for the round trip) After 30 min (5 with bus) you will reach "sassi neri beach" a pleasant place sourrounded by green and lush vegetation with clear blue sea water. (for sure better than Emilia Romagna coast which is usually green). Down there, there is also a restaurant and few bars where to take a drink or a coffee. To conclude, Sassi Neri e San Michele is a very nice place but if you have altready been in Sardinia or Puglia or Sicily don't expect to find places like that. Cheers

Sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the heart of Loreto, the Sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto, or Basilica della Santa Casa, stands as a beacon for pilgrims and visitors alike. This revered site is steeped in tradition, believed to be the very home where the Virgin Mary lived and was raised. According to legend, angels transported this sacred house from Palestine to Italy on December 10th, 1294.
Beautiful basilica perched high on a hill. The importance is profound as it is the home of the birthplace of Mary, brought here by the crusaders. The reverence with which visitors enter the chambers is amazing. What a wonderful place to visit, and quite serendipitous on our part as it was an unplanned stop. Definitely worth seeing.

Ever wonder what happened to the house of the Virgin Mary Mother of Jesus? The house without the foundation was believed to have been brought by the angels in Loreto Italy in the middle of the road. The foundation of the house is in Israel though. The house is now housed inside a beautiful church in Loreto, Italy. We drove there from. Rome and took us about 3 and a half hours. See the church at night or might as well attend a mass at night and during the day. The place is beautiful and quiet. Parking during our visit was challenging. Make sure you have Euros in cash/coins to pay for parking. When we were there, it won't take credit and one miraculous moment, someone gave us coins to pay for parking! An angel sent by Jesus or Mama Mary! Praise God! You cannot take pictures i side Mother Mary's house. But once inside, you can see even some of Jesus scribbles on the wall 😀

Visiting the Madonna’s House in Loreto was a deeply moving and spiritual experience. This sacred place, known as the Holy House, is believed to be where the Virgin Mary lived and received the Angel Gabriel’s announcement. The story of how this humble home was miraculously transported from Nazareth to Loreto in the 13th century adds a sense of wonder and faith to the site. Inside the beautiful basilica that protects it, I felt a profound peace and connection to centuries of devotion.

Deeply religious experience. The crusaders moved Mary's house (the part that was built outside of the grotto) to Loreto, Italy. It's amazing.
Kenneth B — Google review
Beautiful square with the 1614 fountain and the basilica which houses what is believed to be the house of Saint Mary, mother of Jesus, in Nazareth. Masses are held several times a day; a good time for a tourist visit might be between 12:30 and 5:00 PM. Parking lots outside the walls are charged from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm € 1.40/hour € 10 all day, a short distance away there are also large parking lots both free and charged. Toilets € 0.50 at the small gardens behind the square. If you limit yourself to this and to walking along the main street with the businesses, the visit can take an hour and a half. There is also more to see and the visit can take up the whole day. The Museo Pontificio Della Santa Casa € 8 and the patrol walkways € 5 these only with guided tour ( 5 per day the first at 10) their cumulative ticket € 10. "Porta della Marina" from 1534, near has the panoramic terrace, the small park of remembrance, the“holy staircase” of 400 steps and the Polish war cemetery. Free admission for the permanent mechanical nativity scene 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2:30-7:30 p.m. and the small air force museum from July to September daily 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m., an airplane of the “Frecce Tricolori,” is exhibited outside the “round tower” . The Roman Gate of 1590, near the civic tower of the 17th, and of course you can also walk all the way around the defensive walls. According to tradition, in 1291, angels transported three walls of Our Lady's house from the cave in Nazareth, to which it was connected by the fourth wall, to the town of Rijeka in Croatia. They then moved it to the vicinity of Ancona. After 9 months, another transfer took place, this time to Porto Recanati on the property of a noblewoman named “Loreta”. After her name, the statue on display in the house was called “Madonna di Loreta” or “Vergine Lauretana”, but it burned down in a fire in 1921 and the statue on display today is a copy from 1922. Again the angels, after 8 months, moved the house to another private property, but in 1294 they lifted it into the air again, finally depositing it on the top of a hill, and the shrine and city of Loreto was founded around it. According to another, more historical version, it was the Crusaders, nearing defeat in the Last Crusade, who dismantled the house. The transport to Italy from Palestine was carried out by the "Angeli" family, a real Italian surname, and over the years this gave rise to a misunderstanding that confused them with heavenly angels. Having become a pilgrimage destination in 1468, work began on the construction of the basilica. In the 16th century Donato Bramante created the fine marble facing that covers the outer walls of the “Holy House". The city's mighty city walls were built between 1518 and 1522 to resist possible attacks by the Turks who landed on the coasts plundering the villages, an earlier wall from 1315 defended pilgrims and their donations from bandits. The basilica''s exterior was completed in 1587 while work on the interior decorations ended a few years later.

Casa Leopardi is a must-visit attraction in Recanati, known as the birthplace of the renowned poet Giacomo Leopardi. The historic home features his library and personal memorabilia, offering visitors a glimpse into his life and work. Exploring the town, you'll encounter various landmarks referenced in Leopardi's poems, such as St. Agostino's Church and Teatro Persiani.
Tour was in Italian so ensure you select correct language. Still the guide was amazing with so much information! Very beautiful and the history is so profound!

Nice place with a tour that takes you through the rooms where Giacomo Leopardi lived and studied. My experience was a bit ruined by a young boy, a visitor, who told me off while trying to take photos. Photos are permitted everywhere on the site.
Anne G — Google review
It's lovely to explore the house and learn about the family and societal structure of the time. And, of course, its the perfect place if you want to learn about Leopardi's genius intellect and different perspectives.

Casa Leopardi is a deeply moving and beautifully preserved glimpse into the life of the great poet… its historic library, intimate rooms, and family atmosphere bring Leopardi’s world vibrantly to life.

Of all the things suggested in the ticket the house itself with the library is the only one worth visiting. However you cannot take pictures there which is a bit of a shame nowadays
Vincenzo R — Google review
There is not much to add: if you are in Recanati (or just visiting the Marche countryside), you can't forget to pay a visit to Giacomo's house. The biblioteca is an amazing travel back in time and the place where his poetry is born. Highly recommended.

A really great place for a day out for family and friends.... high in the hills, the water park is clean and well kept. We went on the very last day of the season and the atmosphere was fantastic. Free entertainment from a local dance school and a foam party in the lagoon were great fun.

EDITED - Terrible place, feels deserted by customers and seems like a joke. I will not come here anymore because it is old and dangerous to use some of slides, for example connections between tubes are somehow not aligned or have dimples, so when you slide you feel them. They - Service staff - have a break in middle of day, for one hour it is not possible to use ANY swimming pool nor slides. All of them are out for one hour, including a normal swimming pool. Not possible to book on website, Google maps website does not allow to book on iOS. I used iPhone and iPad and i could not book any of tickets. WEAK SERVICES ON SITE. Waste of money!

This is a beautiful place to host any event such as a reception or a company party. Sferisterio di Macerata is an enchanting open-air opera house that can accommodate up to 3,000 spectators. It is known for its grandeur and impressive Italian Baroque architecture. The arena, a 200-year-old building in the neo-classical style, resembles a Roman arena and hosts a popular opera festival each summer. Its acoustics are highly reputed, making it a fantastic venue for shows.
A very beautiful, impressive place for musical performances. The open-air theater is not particularly large, but offers a great backdrop. From all seats you have a good view of the stage and relatively direct contact with the artists

Attending a performance at the Sferisterio during the Macerata Opera Festival is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The unique open-air arena, with its impressive architecture and incredible acoustics, provides the perfect setting for world-class opera. The atmosphere is electric, and the blend of history, culture, and artistic excellence is unparalleled. The festival is beautifully organized, with a great variety of performances that cater to both opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike. The staff is welcoming, and the entire city of Macerata comes alive with the spirit of the festival. From the moment you arrive, you feel like you're part of something very special. I can't recommend this enough—whether you're an opera aficionado or just looking for a memorable cultural experience, the Sferisterio and the Macerata Opera Festival should be at the top of your list. We didn't experience an opera or concert. We visited it outside the opera season, so you can only see the interior. We expected to see more: backstage, balcony, loges, .... Still nice to visit because it's a great building. But experiencing an opera or concert must be breath taking. If you believe this review is useful, then please 'like' it.

Fantastic old historic opera house in Macerata. We saw Carmen here last night and it was a serious treat. We were in box 35 and had a lovely view of the stage, sets and production. The opera house is magnificent. It has its quirks but still offers a wonderful time. The production was high quality and immensely entertaining. The air was warm and balmy. The town is lovely. Hard to fault a thing!

Amazing place for shows. Great acoustics, comfortable seats and beautiful lighting and decor.
Reuma N — Google review
Visited the building (no concert). For six euros you just get to see the inside of the arena, and a flashy edited movie which doesn't provide any in-depth info and history. In my opinion a big rip-off, this should be free like visiting a park. It's probably much nicer when there's a concert. Would've been nice to get on the roof for panoramic view.

Since the changes in the management the sferisterio is on the way up. Last sezon was excellent. This season promise the same. Undoubtedly one of the world best open air opera festival. Only problem is the shape of the auditorium. You just have to bay central tickets, otherwise you spoil the pleasure.

The Paper and Watermark Museum Fabriano is located in a former monastery and is one of the most significant museums in central Italy. It offers demonstrations of handmade paper making, showcases watermarks, and provides courses for those interested. The museum presents the authentic story of Fabriano within a captivating setting, where visitors can explore the history, tradition, culture, and resourcefulness of the city through the art of handmade paper processing.
Very interesting and special museum about the local paper industry. The visit follows the history of paper making, where the city of Fabriano played a key role, and where some of the best paper is still made today. The guide was very knowledgeable and made the tour extremely entertaining! We also did the practical experience in the "paper lab", and made our own sheet of fabriano paper! Very recommended!

Visited the museum with my wife and our dog during our stay at the Villa Gioia in Fabriano. We had to follow a group of school kids of about 13-14 years old. The tour was guided by a young man who was excellent in his presentation. The language was Italian but I think it's possible to obtain a translator for other languages. I was amazed by what I saw and heard, the explanations were clear and also entertaining at the same time. We were able to see the process of ancient paper production and also modern paper production. There was also a very interesting part on the introduction of the watermark, used on many types of quality paper and in particular paper currency. This museum is great for kids and adults and is also visitabile by less able thanks to the staff who provided a ramp for my wife to enter the museum and then transported her to the first floor in a lift. There is also a very nice shop to buy gifts.

Amazing morning at the museum. We didn't book ahead and we probably should have. School groups were touring on the same day so when the guide finished with them, he offered to take us around. His English was limited but we managed and he was so kind to take us around. He showed my 6-year-old how to make paper and let him try it out. Highly recommended activity for families. I suggest to plan better than we did and go when there is an English tour so it's even better. There's a great playground and park across the street where you can do a picnic after.

A must-see in Fabriano, being the first town in Europe to produce paper, it has a great history. The museum itself is easy to reach, set in abeautiful ancient and well kept building, with any kind of facility for disable and has a video in English to explain what you are going to see before you start.

Very interesting place, good for families. English excursions not every day. Still worthy to visit. We have got a pleasant workshop for kids and produced a souvenir with own hands.

I went here for a class field trip! It was really cool to see because they take you through their history, you can also actually make paper if you take a tour. It is old fashioned but they show you how they keep up their modern touch. The town surrounding the factory is also very nice. It is totally worth seeing and making a stop at their factory with their excellent guides!

Sights & Landmarks
The Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi is an iconic Gothic church and a major Christian pilgrimage site. This UNESCO World Heritage Site consists of the Upper Basilica and the Lower Basilica, adorned with medieval art. The basilica also features smaller chapels like those dedicated to St Mary Magdalene and St Louis of Toulouse. It's recommended to use an audio guide to explore the rich history behind this impressive structure.
Breathtaking views inside - out! Sublime architecture and a sheer joy to witness it all. No tickets required. The tomb of the Saint Francis can be easily viewed, although no photos are allowed to be taken inside the burial chamber. There’s a souvenir shop within the building, plenty of restaurants around the Basilica could be spotted too. Be careful which one you are going to as they aren’t Michelin star restaurants. If Gordon Ramsey gets there; he’ll definitely close the whole road where they are located, not just one. The Car park is massive, so don’t you worry about parking.

So special to experience these beautiful churches - up and down! We got to enjoy an English mass at 9am on Sunday. Touring with Rick Steeves podcast in our ear was great (also the town walk is so good). Loved the museum in the back. The highlight of course was the crypt, to spend some time in the presence of St Francis. Well- we know his presence is with us in Christ, but so cool to see his tomb. The Giotto frescoes are amazing and the ceilings- wow, that blue- I love it.

Lovely Medieval town - Assisi - famous for St Francis' Basilica, which we visited. Also had a lovely cappuccino but didn't stay for lunch. Escalators available to get you into the higher parts of town from all the car parks so no worries for older and less mobile visitors. A must-see if in Umbria

Today's highlight. You don't want to miss this place when in Assisi. Prepare for a walk uphill and downhill. Travel light but bring some coins or bills for the offering and candles. There's plenty of good restaurants and giftshop in the area. Walking distance to visit the tombs of St. Clare and Saint Carlo Acutis.🙏🙏🙏

What an amazing experience to be able to come on a pilgrimage here. The church is very beautiful and full of meaning. There is a tomb of St. Francis of Assisi under this church. There is also a museum, and a souvenir shop. Don’t forget when you enter, there is a prayer paper that we can take and write, so that later we can bring it to the tomb area of St. Francis, and we give to the brothers here to pray. Then don’t forget after shopping at the souvenir shop, bring it to the blessing section near the exit.

We visited here as part of a tour group, it has amazing art work throughout, its just a shame you can not take photos of your visit. It is a very large complex and will stun you by its size, it gets busy and has some stairways that are narrow.

Another beautiful and amazing church in Italy, the Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi. Also, this church is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. there are two distinct churches: the Upper and Lower Basilicas. A ‘thin’ place of connection with God, run by humble friars. The main centre was quite busy and museum like, with a well laid out and preserved history of this hermitage of St Francis and his brothers and those who built this monastery after. The two gems for for were: 1)the time with God hiking there. It was beautiful, and the first half was harder than I expected. I was glad I left nearly in the morning and wore good shoes. I did notice others walked along the road to get there. (You can drive as well, thus lots of people there.) 2) taking time out in the caves and spots of worship on the grounds. There was even a pilgrimage mass going on at the far end - so lovely. Not only was this a moment of historic learning, it was a time of deep connection with Jesus.

An enchanting spot in the hills. Would highly recommend walking up and taking the forest path - everyone seems to walk up the road but there is a very clearly signed path from the city wall which goes up through the forest. It is a challenging uphill climb but well worth it for the views and peaceful site. Plus the feeling of pride at the summit! The hermitage complex is stunning and well worth the walk up.

If you go to Assisi, a beautiful sanctuary to go to is Eremo Della Carceri. You can walk the 4 km up hill, with spectacular views which takes between 1-1 1/2 hrs. There is a welcome cafe at the entrance 🙂. The caves here are where St Francis and his brothers lived and prayed and the monastery was built around them. The grounds on the mountainside are so peaceful to walk and pray in. The monastery has some small passages and narrow stairways, but this adds to the atmosphere. The monks there are very welcoming. Beautiful.

Here is a 500-word review of the **Basilica of Santa Chiara** in Assisi, Italy: --- **Basilica of Santa Chiara – A Sacred Gem in the Heart of Assisi** Nestled on the slopes of Assisi with sweeping views over the Umbrian valley, the **Basilica of Santa Chiara** (Saint Clare) is a peaceful, radiant tribute to one of the most beloved figures in Christian history. Though often overshadowed by the grand Basilica of Saint Francis just a short walk away, Santa Chiara offers its own powerful spiritual presence and architectural beauty that moves visitors in quieter, more intimate ways. Built in the mid-13th century and dedicated to **Saint Clare of Assisi**, a close follower and spiritual companion of Saint Francis, the basilica serves as both a place of worship and a physical testament to her legacy. Clare was the founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, later known as the **Poor Clares**, and she lived a life of radical poverty, humility, and service. This same simplicity is echoed in the church’s design. The façade of the basilica is striking in its understated elegance. Composed of alternating bands of pale pink and white stone from Mount Subasio, it reflects the light in soft, ethereal tones—particularly at sunrise or sunset. A large rose window adorns the front, typical of Umbrian-Gothic architecture, and the entrance is humble, yet inviting. The bell tower, added later, completes the silhouette of the church against the sky. Upon entering the basilica, the **atmosphere shifts dramatically**. It’s quiet, dimly lit, and deeply contemplative. The simplicity of the interior draws the eye and the heart toward what matters most: prayer and reflection. Frescoes adorn the walls, including some attributed to early followers of Giotto. These delicate images tell the story of Saint Clare’s life and her profound faith, adding color and warmth without overwhelming the space. The true heart of the basilica lies beneath, in the **crypt where Saint Clare’s body rests**, displayed in a glass coffin. Pilgrims and visitors alike approach with reverence. Her incorrupt body, long preserved, serves as a reminder of the depth of her devotion. Surrounding her tomb are relics of both Saint Clare and Saint Francis, including tunics, haircloths, and personal effects that humanize these legendary figures and connect the visitor to their daily lives. Outside the basilica, the **piazza** offers a panoramic view of the Umbrian countryside, making it one of the most beautiful and tranquil spots in Assisi. Whether you're a pilgrim, a history enthusiast, or a casual traveler, sitting on the stone steps as the bells chime can be a moment of deep peace. The **Basilica of Santa Chiara** is not grand in a worldly sense, but its spiritual weight is undeniable. It embodies the Franciscan values of humility, beauty, and inner strength. In a town steeped in faith and history, this sacred space is both a monument to a powerful woman and a place where the soul can breathe. Visiting Santa Chiara is not just about seeing a church; it’s about feeling a presence—a gentle call to simplicity, compassion, and silent grace.

Very beautiful and inspiring. The exterior is undergoing renovations, but interior restorations had recently been completed, and the results are stunning. What a beautiful church. Most special because of the portinocula - St Francis’ special little church. Incredible works of art- especially one of Francis receiving the stigmata. They also have confession booths with multiple languages, with very caring and open priests ready to hear and help you draw close to God. Francis’ place of death and his rose garden as well. Wonderful masses offered. A great gift shop. I wish I had bought more Tau necklaces while I was there to give to others. Also the bookstore is awesome. So many great Franciscan themes and authors.

Numerous documents attest to the life and reality of Rasiglia since the 12th century. They are deeds of sale, purchase, building licenses, bequests, donations, certificates of possession or taxation on land that can still be found today in the current toponymy. Its border position towards the Sellano territory and towards the diocese of Spoleto, meant that the Trinci, lords of Foligno between 1305 and 1439, built one of the defensive structures there to make their borders safe and controllable. Here is the Castrum et Roccha Rasiliae, completed by Corrado Trinci and cited by the notary Ser Benedetto Rampeschi in the Liber Officiorum of 1421. The Rocca di Rasiglia is one of the eleven built by the Trinci in the Foligno territory; it was held by armed men and a salaried castellan. Originally it occupied the entire top of the hill, with an almost rectangular shape. Traces of the surrounding walls and the ruins of a tower remain visible. A mill, a fulling mill, some houses in the village were owned by the Trinci who, exploiting the precious presence of water, had given life to those activities that for centuries then guaranteed the life of the entire community. In Rasiglia, everywhere, every path is marked by water. However, a strong reason for interest is the whole, the development of the building fabric in function of work activities and daily life, which have sedimented a heritage of knowledge, of ability, of industriousness perceptible in every corner, in every stone, in every space. It is the sign of life lived, of the difficulties faced daily, of the ingenuity put in place to overcome them, of the creative and intelligent will that has marked every moment of work and progress.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful walk right above the village of Rasiglia....up to the Rocca dei trinci...it's a shame there is little to see...there are few remains along the way....but there is a beautiful view and a walk it's worth it!!! You can have some great encounters 😉 It's a shame there aren't adequate reports! (Translated by Google) Suggestive panorama. From the ruins of the tower it is possible to see all of Rasiglia from above. However, the area is not well looked after and it could even be dangerous to venture out with children (Original) Panorama suggestivo. Dal rudere della torre è possibile vedere tutta Rasiglia dall'alto. La zona tuttavia non è curata e potrebbe essere anche pericoloso avventurarsi con bambini

If you find yourself in the enchanting region of Umbria, don't miss out on the unforgettable experience of a "Wild Foods Truffle Hunt." This adventure begins with a warm welcome and an espresso at a local farm, where you'll meet the friendly family who runs it. After getting acquainted over coffee, you'll embark on an exhilarating journey into the mountains in 4WD vehicles.
The perfect way to enjoy a “truffle hunt” while living high in the Umbrian hills in a tiny village with a family that runs the lodge. Francesca and Mac are both amazing - great hosts, guides and give you an insight into their lifestyle. Not to be missed.

The truffle hunting experience is perfect. Francesca and her family are very friendly, so are the dogs and cats. We love everything about this ancient village where they produce their own olive oil, cheese, fresh pasta, prosciutto which taste so good with fresh truffles. We will definitely come back again for the good people, truffles and food.

Our experience here was great! We accompanied them on a truffle hunt outside, but you don’t have to do any of the work because the dogs find and dig up the truffles. It is a really cool process to see regardless! Then, we picnicked eggs with the truffles we just found, wine, and homemade pecorino cheese. Afterwards, we headed back to the house where we sampled cured meats, more wine, and bruschetta. Francesca made pasta from scratch with truffle sauce, it was delicious! The pasta was followed with a meat course, coffee, and tiramisu. I would recommend a visit here for a great Umbrian experience!

One of the most amazing days we had spent on our month in Umbria. We had a driver from Spello to take us to Pettino and I'm glad we did -- it is quite the incredible ride up into the mountains. We were greeted with an espresso upon arrival at the farm, where we met the family. Loading into 4WD vehicle we followed Luca and his truffle hunting dogs up the mountainside, where they were let loose to hunt for the elusive truffles. The day was picture perfect. The views over the mountain side were breathtaking. Those industrious pups found truffles! We were then taken over the field where the sheet are herded, where Luca made us eggs with the truffles on a gas stove on his tailgate and all paired with Prosecco. Back at the farm we were treated to home cured meats, olive oil and wine, all while Francesca exhibited her pasta making skills. Lunch was in a lovely profession kitchen, consisting of the pasta and truffles (of course), followed by grilled fennel, pork and lamb. All accompanied by their wine! We finished up the meal with a tiramisu. It is a beautiful place and it will forever be in our memories.

An incredible experience, authentic and well run by knowledgeable and very friendly owners. Words will not do it justice: It gives you a real insight into the truffle industry You taste fresh truffle, retrieved before your very eyes The food and drinks offered are delicious, fresh and could be served in a five star restaurant! The group size is max 16 - plenty of new friends to be made! Well worth taking the day to really soak up the experience

Wow. What an experience. Simultaneously expert and knowledgeable in the world of luxurious truffles, whilst at the same time unbelievably humble and down to earth. This was everything we hoped it would be and more. A brilliant time truffle hunting, followed up by multiple courses of gorgeous food, all in the best company of our hosts and guides. As good an experience as we've ever had on holiday.

100% recommended! We actually arranged our trip to Italy around the availability of the truffle hunt here, but later got a bit nervous that this was a bit too expensive. We went anyway and were totally blown away by the family that let us share a bit of their lives. The day starts with coffee and a chance to get to know each other. Then off in the trucks to the higher woods and fields with the dogs. The dogs (well, maybe half of them) walk with us to to the various oak trees and find truffles under the soil. When they deliver these to the handlers, they are rewarded with a biscuit. This was fascinating to watch. (The other half of the dogs just did dog things). After we collected enough, we drove to a high plain where we cooked and ate eggs with the truffles and drank a bit too much prosecco. The local sheep (and wolf hounds) joined us for a fun time in the sun. Back in the little village, we were served unlimited wine, bruchette, and sliced meats. They made pasta from scratch, and then we were served an amazing late lunch with wild boar. The conversations were real, we made good friends, and would definitely recommend this as a highlight of any trip. (We took too many pics - sorry!).

This is a must do if you are in the area. Luca, Mac, Daniel, and Francesca were all great hosts and we had fun talking with them. Do come hungry because there is a lot food to be eaten. This was the highlight of our 10 day trip in Italy and we will be back again when we come back to Umbria one day.
