TYRSHI WATER FALL

Waterfalls
One of the beautiful falls in West Jayantia Hills. It is a hidden waterfall actually, not so many travellers come here to enjoy the beauty. The trees and the colourful leaves make it more beautiful. Actually, it is a cascade, not a proper waterfall. There are paddy fields also which get benefit from the water. Such a Photogenic waterfall this one is. You can capture nice pieces of photographs for you and your partner. You just need to come down to the bottom. Then you will feel the actual version of it. There are plenty of flowers, I Don't know the names bit they seem to be the permanent residents of this area.
Subhankar D — Google review
One of the more unique water fall experiences ever. Walking through / surrounded by Paddy fields to the two tiered cascade. Went early in the morning so it was not much crowded . About 350 steps and a path one way down so it is not very tough but for a couple of sections on the way back when you get the sun on you. The water is so cool and you are tempted to get under the falls. Clean and well maintained and makes for amazing pictures. The air feels so fresh and sweet smelling thanks to all the vegetation. Shall be of the favourite parts of my Meghalaya visit. Best visited on your return trip from Dawki to Shillong if you plan it that way - along with Krang Suri falls and Narthiang.

Tyrshi Falls, located near Jowai in the West Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, is a stunning and lesser-known waterfall that showcases the raw beauty of the region. Nestled amidst rolling hills and dense greenery, this waterfall offers a peaceful escape for travelers seeking tranquility away from the more popular tourist spots. The waterfall cascades gracefully over rocky cliffs into a natural pool below, surrounded by lush forest and misty hills. The gushing water, combined with the cool breeze, creates a refreshing and serene atmosphere. Unlike heavily commercialized waterfalls, Tyrshi Falls maintains its pristine charm and is perfect for photography, nature walks, and short picnics. The approach is moderately easy, with a scenic walk through greenery and small local trails, making it accessible for most visitors. The area remains relatively quiet, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the soothing sounds and sights of the waterfall. Highlights: Beautiful waterfall in a peaceful, offbeat location near Jowai Surrounded by lush greenery and scenic hills Ideal for photography, relaxation, and nature lovers Less crowded, offering a calm and authentic experience Tips: Best visited during or after the monsoon (June–October) for full water flow. Wear comfortable shoes, as some parts of the trail can be slippery. Carry water and snacks; facilities are limited nearby. Visit during daylight hours for safety and the best views.

Experience the serenity of Tyrchi Falls! Take a leisurely stroll down the safely paved path to the base of the falls, where refreshing mist awaits. Suitable for all ages, this easy trek takes under 10 minutes down and 10-15 minutes back up. Enjoy breathtaking views of lush paddy fields along the way, perfect for a picturesque moment. Entry fee is Rs 30 per adult and parking is at an additional Rs 50.
Nayna W — Google review
Tyrshi Waterfall, often called the ‘twin of Shillong’s Elephant Falls,’ is a hidden gem near Jowai in Meghalaya. The waterfall is wide and elegant, cascading down gracefully amidst lush greenery, making it a picture-perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers. What makes Tyrshi special is the scenic approach – you get to walk through golden paddy fields on a beautiful stone pathway with over 100 steps leading down to the viewpoint. The peaceful walk itself feels like a journey into nature’s lap. From the bottom, the view of the waterfall is absolutely breathtaking, especially during the monsoon when the flow is at its peak. Unlike more commercialized waterfalls, Tyrshi is relatively less crowded, which adds to its charm and serenity. You can truly enjoy the sound of rushing water, the cool breeze, and the calm surroundings without much disturbance. It’s an ideal spot for a relaxed visit, photography, or just spending quiet moments away from the rush. If you’re in Jowai or planning a trip around West Jaintia Hills, Tyrshi Waterfall is a must-visit destination that beautifully captures the raw and untouched beauty of Meghalaya

My trip to Meghalaya was an unforgettable experience! The state truly deserves its title as the “Abode of Clouds.” The natural beauty of the hills, waterfalls, and caves was breathtaking. Visiting places like Cherrapunji, Dawki, and Shillong was the highlight of the journey
Suman R — Google review

Located near Jowai in the Jaintia Hills, this waterfall feels like a postcard come to life. 👉 Highlights: To reach the waterfall, you need to walk down around 300+ steps, surrounded by lush greenery and stunning views. From the pathway, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Jaintia Hills. During the monsoon season, the waterfall looks even more majestic and powerful. The place is usually less crowded, making it calm and peaceful for nature lovers. 💡 Tips for Visitors: Wear comfortable shoes as the steps can be a bit slippery. Carry a camera – the scenery here is extremely photogenic. Best time to visit is during the monsoon for the full experience. ⭐ Overall Rating: 4.7/5 👉 A must-visit spot in Meghalaya, perfect for those who love nature, photography, and peaceful surroundings.

Tyrshi Waterfall near Jowai in Meghalaya offers a stunning, serene experience for visitors. The waterfall is tall and mighty, cascading down rocky cliffs surrounded by lush greenery and scenic paddy fields. The trek to the base, via well-maintained steps and a picturesque arch bridge, makes the visit extra special, offering panoramic views of the valley below. The atmosphere is peaceful and uncrowded, as Tyrshi Falls remains relatively unknown compared to other spots. There are no vendors or tourist crowds—just the sound of birds, rustling leaves, and the magnificent rush of water. The best time to visit is after the monsoon, when the water is at its most impressive, and the landscape is vibrant. The walk down can be tiring but is entirely worth the effort for the spectacular views, cool mist from the falls, and the tranquility rarely found elsewhere. One can enjoy nature walks, photography, and even a refreshing dip in the natural pool, but packing snacks is essential as there aren't any shops nearby. Tyrshi Falls is an ideal day trip for families, nature lovers, and those seeking solitude and the raw beauty of Meghalaya.

Mawphlang Sacred Forest

Mentioned on
1 list
Nature & Parks
Historical landmark
Mawphlang Sacred Grove is a forest that has been preserved by the Khasi community for its historical and religious significance. The dense forest can be explored through guided tours, which last approximately an hour. Visitors are not allowed to remove anything from the forest or damage any trees or plants within it. The forest contains many ancient medicinal trees, some of which are over 500 years old. Additionally, there are various mushrooms and sacrificial sites that have been used for religious rituals throughout many generations.
An absolutely amazing and very unique experience in India. A beautiful forest area which is maintained by the village and the community. The guides charge about 350 for the short 30/40 mins half tour . Explaining about some of the flora as well as some of the rituals and traditions, their presence with you is mandatory and makes the forest walk a wonderful experience . A good hour and bit drive from Shillong , we were fortunate to have wonderful cool and cloudy weather which enhanced the experience . Excellent place and I enjoyed the experience - I hope it continues to be maintained well . The guide helped to learned more about the menhirs / monolith stones which are respected by the tribes. We also learned about the trees which give the Rudraksh and for a nice lesson on it from our guide Ryngkat.
Avinash V — Google review
A beautiful forest is like nature’s own masterpiece — a world full of peace, mystery, and life. Sunlight filters gently through the leaves, painting the ground with golden patterns. The air feels fresh and alive, carrying the soft sounds of birds singing and leaves whispering in the breeze. Every tree stands tall and proud, each with a story to tell — of time, growth, and quiet strength. The forest is not just a place of beauty, but also of calm and wonder — a reminder that even in silence, life thrives in the most magical ways. 🌿✨ I am glad that I get a chance to visit. Guide was very nice and helpful.

Serene, clean and quiet. 1 hour drive from Shillong. This is the only one open to tourists out of several other sacred forests through out Meghalaya. A local community group manages the tourist visits. An entry fee (for each person and car extra) with guide fee is charged. The guides are actually local boys who take a group for a half n hour trail. The ground in front of the forest is do clean that it looks like outside India.
Suman S — Google review
This is just outside shillong city, not so far. A sacred place for the local Khasi community. The place is dedicated to their god Labasa...they used to seek permission for hunting through animal sacrifice for Labasa. The walking trail is really beautiful.... someone have to take a guide to enter to the forest area, the guide will describe about the khasi traditions, history and the monoliths situated inside the forest. There are full and half trek options. The place is very serene and quiet. Someone must not take anything outside the forest, whether its leaves or stones or rudraksh or flowers.
Shouvik S — Google review
How to reach - You can hire a taxi or a rented 2 wheeler to reach. We went on Sunday and got mix response from locals regarding shared taxi/sumo. So better don't hope for it. Renting two wheeler is a better option if you are experienced rider. Average renting starts nearly 800 for a scooty. Bargaining is based in your skills. Good view and peaceful, better you take food and have a quality time there. Entry is 30rs per person, 350rs guide (half trek) mandatory, parking for 2 wheeler is 20rs. The half trekking is almost 30-40 mins total in and out. Nothing allowed to take out. Rudraksh can be bought at the counter or better say from the guides help desk. At the end they ask to donate some money voluntarily but if you don't want to be asked to so better don't go to them 😜. Rest the guide will tell you about sacred forest. Nothing exciting but can be visited if you have time.
ABHISHEK S — Google review
The Mawphlang Sacred Forest is a truly unique and spiritual experience in Meghalaya. Spread across 193 acres, it is carefully preserved by the local Khasi community, where nothing – not even a leaf or pebble – can be taken out. Entry is only with a guide (₹350), and their explanations about the forest’s flora, rituals, and traditions make the visit memorable. Highlights include the Rudraksh trees with symbolic meanings, and the monolith stone formations representing family and tribal beliefs. The guides also share fascinating stories about Khasi rituals and their matrilineal culture . Walking through the dense, mossy forest feels magical and peaceful
Rahul M — Google review
An old story behind this sacred forest search in google..this forest is actually maintained by khasi tribes . At the entry point they charged 30 rs entry fees + car parking 50 rs+ guide charges 350 rs ..guide show u rudraksha trees, radodrendron and pine tree and tell the tourist story of this forest. I think the tour guide is not mandatory

Mawphlang Sacred Forest, a mystical gem in Meghalaya! This ancient forest is steeped in tradition and spirituality, with towering trees, crystal-clear streams, and vibrant flora. The air is thick with history and reverence, as locals have protected this sacred grove for centuries. Walking through the forest is like stepping into a different world – serene, untouched, and full of life. The Khasi people's deep connection with nature is palpable, making this a truly unique experience. Tips: - Respect the forest's sacredness and follow local guidelines. - Wear comfortable shoes for the undulating terrain. - Engage with local guides to uncover the forest's secrets. Waterfalls
Elephant Falls in Shillong is a stunning multi-tiered waterfall surrounded by picturesque scenery. Visitors can easily explore the area through walking trails and stairs. The falls are formed by three small streams merging to create a beautiful cascade. While in Shillong, tourists can also trek to the top of Shillong Peak for panoramic views, visit the historic Shillong Golf Course, offer prayers at the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, and experience local shopping at Police Bazar.
Excellent Water Fall to see very nearly. Elephant Falls is a popular three-tiered waterfall in Shillong, Meghalaya, known for its natural beauty and scenic views. Named after a now-destroyed elephant-shaped rock, the falls are also called "Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew" or "the three-step waterfall". Visitors can enjoy well-maintained paths, take photos, and see the cascades from different viewpoints. Mathskart C — Google review
Elephant Falls is one of the most famous and easily accessible waterfalls in Shillong, often considered a must-visit stop for anyone exploring Meghalaya. Located just about 12 km from the city center, this beautiful three-tiered waterfall offers a refreshing escape into nature, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sound of cascading water. The falls are named after a rock that once resembled an elephant, though it was destroyed in an earthquake many years ago. Visitors can descend through well-built steps that lead to three different levels of the falls — each offering its own unique view and charm. The lowest tier is the most picturesque, where the water gushes down dramatically, making it a favorite spot for photos. The area is well-maintained, with proper walkways, railings, and small shops near the entrance selling local crafts and snacks. It’s a great place to relax, take pictures, and enjoy the cool misty air. Highlights: Three-tiered waterfall surrounded by dense greenery Conveniently located close to Shillong city Safe, well-maintained pathways and viewing platforms Excellent spot for photography and short nature walks Tips: Wear comfortable shoes — the steps can be steep and slippery. Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds. The best time to visit is during or just after the monsoon for full water flow. Spend time at the bottom tier for the best views and photos.
Rick D — Google review
Elephant Falls in Shillong is truly a natural gem and one of the most popular tourist spots in Meghalaya. The waterfall is divided into three layers, each offering a unique charm. The first tier is broad and calm, while the second and third drops are more powerful and picturesque. The view becomes increasingly beautiful as you go down the well-maintained stairway surrounded by lush greenery. The place is easily accessible from Shillong city, and the entry ticket is quite affordable. There are small shops near the entrance selling souvenirs, local snacks, and tea. The best time to visit is during or just after the monsoon when the water flow is at its peak. Photography lovers will find this place perfect for capturing nature’s beauty. However, be prepared for a bit of walking and stair climbing. Overall, Elephant Falls is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Shillong—peaceful, scenic, and refreshing!
Subha K — Google review
The place is on the way to Mawphlang Sacred Forest. Approx 18km from Shillong. Its a nice spot. What all we can see and do 1. Entry fee - 100 per adult 2. 2 wheeler and 4 wheeler can be taken. 3. Refreshment and some locally made products can be bought from the shops at the entrance. 4. Three stage waterfalls is there. First is at the same level while for others you have to go down through stairs. 5. Garden on the other side of stage three water fall. 6. Bathing and Swimming is not at all allowed. 7. Average crowding.
ABHISHEK S — Google review
Simple, accessible, but not a very “natural” waterfall experience Elephant Falls is one of the easiest tourist spots to visit in Shillong. The waterfall has three levels, but honestly, it doesn’t fully feel like a natural, untouched waterfall because of the heavy tourist infrastructure around it. Still, it’s pleasant and good for quick sightseeing. What to know: 1. It doesn’t look like a raw natural falls — more like a landscaped tourist spot. 2. It can be crowded at times, especially on weekends. 3. Toilets are available right before the entrance, which is convenient. 4. Tickets are minimal, good for budget travellers. 5. The steps are easy, well-maintained, and not tiring at all — suitable for all age groups.
The N — Google review
This is a must go destination while travelling in Shillong. The local Khasi name of the falls is Ka Kshaid Lai, which literally means waterfalls with three stages. You can not see all three stages together but you have to go down through stairs to visit each stage ......all three stages are very beautiful. The largest one is the third and lowest stage. This area also have plenty of parking and good food options. Also good for buying souvenirs.
Shouvik S — Google review
Elephant Falls is an okay-type waterfall - not particularly impressive compared to many others. I've seen far more beautiful waterfalls in Sikkim, and most of them don't even charge a visiting fee. Here, they take ₹100 per person just to enter, which feels unreasonable for what the place offers. On top of that, you need to pay for parking even if you leave your motorcycle on the roadside. Overall, the experience felt more like a money-making setup than a genuine tourist attraction.
Ikramul M — Google review
Indeed an elephant, This elephant falls has 3 falls, first at the top, then the mid- layer and then you land to the bottom. You need to trek for 15-20mins, the stairs are proper so won't be a difficult trek, it would be total of 150-200 steps. If you plan to visit elephant falls, please wear proper shoe as sandals might slip, rest everything is perfect 🙂

Shillong View Point, also known as Shillong Peak, is a popular destination for tourists and day-trippers. Located at an altitude of approximately 2000m above sea level and about 10km from the heart of Shillong City, it offers panoramic views of the city during the day and a mesmerizing sight of city lights at night.
Shillong View Point, also known as Laitkor Peak, truly deserves a 5-star rating. As the highest point in Meghalaya, at 1966 meters, the panoramic views are simply breathtaking. Located roughly 10 kilometers from Shillong city, the journey to the peak is an experience in itself. You'll need to park at the ticket counter and then take a short taxi ride through an Indian Air Force area, which adds a unique touch. The drive, though only 3 kilometers, is a peaceful and scenic ascent, maintained at a gentle 30 km/h. Keep in mind that this tranquil spot closes relatively early, around 4 PM, so plan your visit accordingly. The serene atmosphere and stunning vistas make it an unforgettable destination.

It's a good place to get an aerial view of Shillong city. It was good. The cars are not allowed inside. You need to get the tickets, pass and id proof go inside after verified by the police. And they will provide you the car to go inside also.
Dikshya — Google review
Shillong Viewpoint at Laitkor Peak was a mixed experience for me. The view itself is absolutely breathtaking—you get a sweeping panorama of the city, the hills, and on a clear day it feels magical, almost like floating above the clouds. That part really lived up to the hype and made the visit memorable. What disappointed me, though, was how commercialized the whole place felt. Instead of focusing on showcasing culture or giving visitors a deeper experience of the region, everything seemed centered around selling things—photo ops in traditional Khasi attire, snacks, and trinkets. The charm of the natural setting gets a bit overshadowed by the push for money. Despite that, I can’t deny the beauty of the viewpoint itself. The scenery makes it worth a visit, but the experience could have been so much richer if it celebrated the culture as much as the view. For me, it’s a solid 4/5.
Ragini B — Google review
“Where clouds guard the city of dreams.” From Shillong View Point, the world below looks like a painting — misty hills, tiny homes, and a city wrapped in clouds. The air carries peace, and the breeze feels like a soft melody from the mountains. 🌫️💚 Standing there, I felt time slow down, as if Shillong itself was smiling back at me. ✨

Best place to get a bird’s view of Shilong city. Its situated inside the Army camp. No private vehicles are allowed. Only local taxi from the tkt counter to be booked and they ll take you to this point.

Visited in August. Amazing view. Totally covered by dense fog. Atmosphere is cool. Quiet place. The route to place is also amazing

Just fantastic view. You require to hire a local car @Rs 200/- per car for max 4 people. The entry fee per person is Rs 50/- . The private vehicles are not allowed as it’s a Airforce premises. The view point is about 1.3 Km from the main gate of Airforce Unit of Shillong. You can enjoy nature while seeing the Shillong view from the peak. The view can be watched in very binocular by paying extra Rs 20/ per person The traditional Khasi Attire are available for Rs 100/- per person and you can click photographs for cherishing the moments for the life time. In total a must visit place

Shillong Peak: A Panoramic View with an Unexpected Twist Shillong Peak is one of the highest points in Meghalaya, offering an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the entire city and the surrounding hills. Standing at over 6,000 feet above sea level, the peak provides a breathtaking vantage point where you can see the lush landscapes, rolling hills, and the beauty of nature stretched out before you. On a clear day, the view is truly mesmerizing, with the clouds floating just above the city and the green hills fading into the horizon. One thing to note, though, is the presence of an army base nearby. While I was enjoying the serene atmosphere, I was startled by the sound of gunshots. It turns out there was army training happening in the vicinity, which added an unexpected and somewhat intense element to the experience. Although the gunshots were a bit jarring at first, it wasn’t a major disruption, and it reminded me of the strong military presence in the area. The drive to Shillong Peak is equally stunning, with winding roads and forested paths leading you to the top. The military guards at the entrance are friendly, and the area is well-maintained. Be prepared for some light security checks since the peak is located within a restricted military zone. Overall, Shillong Peak is a must-visit for anyone coming to Meghalaya. The view is unmatched, and while the gunshots from the army training might catch you off guard, they don’t take away from the natural beauty of the place. Just a small quirk of the experience that adds to the uniqueness of your visit!

Entry fee to museum 100 /- for adults, 50/- for children upto 5th STD. Camera fee 100. There are 7 floors and last floor has sky walk. Amazing experience.

My wife and I visited the museum in Oct 2025. At first we were really concerned how we would be able to climb th 7 storeys but soon after entering a staff member kindly directed us to a lift that took us to the top sky walk and we could enjoy all floors (a MUST visit) strolling down. A men's or Ladies toilet on every single floor makes it Senior friendly. The collection is a comprehensive and superb one. We came back knowing a lot about all 7 North East (sister) States! Highly recommend a visit.

This is a must visit in Shillong with a ticket cost of just 20 rupees per head, I highly recommend to explore this place in order to understand the cultures and heritage of all the North Eastern States We went there with minimal knowledge and we got to experience most of the cultures. Also would recommend taking an option to click pictures. It’ll help you in making memories We took many pictures and had really fun at the view point as well. Spare at-least 2-3 hrs It’s air conditioned and well maintained, The staff is friendly too and there’s a store with lot of options to buy from.
Jaswanth D — Google review
It's a well maintained museum and the skywalk gives a vast panoramic view of the Shillong town. It's a must visit if you're in Shillong. The ticket is cheap with extra charges for mobiles and cameras. The museum beautifully showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Seven Sister states and one brother Sikkim. Each floor is dedicated to different aspects of tribal life, their belongings and how they manage their livelihood. One can understand the difference between the cultures of the seven states in a very lucid way.

The name don't represent the place , it's more of a cultural And Heritage Museum. Build with multistory 7 floor active museum with about 20 chambers. Contents include from Stone age area to modern journey. A video visual graphic presentation should have been added benefit One need minimum 1 and half hour to have a brief look, and more for detailed understanding Photography from mobile is also chargeable

Umiam Lake, also known as Badapani by locals, is a stunning man-made water body located 16 km from Shillong. Surrounded by lush greenery, the lake offers various recreational activities such as boating and picnics. Visitors can enjoy the crystal-clear blue waters and vibrant flowers while taking advantage of different boating facilities available. Additionally, there is a nearby resort for those looking to extend their visit or enjoy a meal.
The view is great. Must visit place in shillong. The lake is awesome and provides fresh air. There is a bit of walking to reach the lake but it's a great photoshoot place. Boating will be available when the weather is good. There are also rafting races happening in the lake as well.

Your entry to Meghalaya when you drive into Shillong from Guwahati. It is a sports complex which has been developer around a man made lake fed by rainwater. Plenty of parking, great views, decent washrooms and the speed boat experience was excellent and felt safe as well. Charging an entry fee seems excessive if a person is boating then perhaps it could be refunded( because it is quite high 50 pp, while boating is 200). Lovely clean air and clear skies make a very good experience.

Once part of the state of Assam, this man made lake was included into Meghalaya when 3 southern districts of Assam were made part of the newly formed state. A place of unparalleled natural beauty and bio-diversity. MTDC has built a resort "Orchid Lake resort" on the banks.

Water is pretty. Boating was quite expensive. The boat guy did not behaved well tho, we asked him to slow down a bit cuz the boat was literally jumping and we couldn’t balance well. He did not respond , it was like he was pretty annoyed from the start. He did not slow down and when we asked him to slow down the second time he replied ‘its like this only’. It was only one round for 8min after paying 600 for 3 people. There is no good eatery inside. I’d give my experience 7.5/10.

A Tranquil Jewel Just Outside Shillong Umiam Lake is, without doubt, one of the crown jewels of Meghalaya. Just a short drive from Shillong’s hustle - around 15 km from Police Bazar - this place opens up into a vast, glimmering expanse of water cradled by rolling green hills. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause, breathe, and forget time altogether. The surroundings are peaceful and beautifully kept - perfect for an afternoon stroll or simply sitting by the shore with a flask of tea. Boating here is a real treat - hop onto a shared speedboat or take a kayak out if you fancy a bit more quiet. Either way, the views are sublime, especially as the sun starts to dip and the sky reflects off the lake’s calm surface. Before reaching the lake entrance, there’s a lovely little viewpoint worth stopping for. You’ll find some fast food stalls there too - nothing fancy, but great for a quick bite with a view. Whether you’re into photography, nature, or just a bit of soul-soothing stillness, Umiam Lake is a must. A gentle reminder of how spectacular simplicity can be.

Purva Tirupati Sri Balaji Temple, located in the tranquil outskirts of Guwahati, is a stunning replica of the renowned Tirupati Venkateswara Temple. This Hindu temple showcases traditional South Indian architecture with its gopurams and vibrant sculptures. Dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, it features intricate carvings and a golden dhwaja stambha, creating an enchanting atmosphere for devotion.
This temple is a beautiful and peaceful place built over a spacious area. The South Indian–style architecture looks fantastic, and the temple complex is very well maintained. The inner garden is beautifully kept, adding to the serenity of the place. There’s a large parking area outside. Before entering the temple, visitors need to wash their hands and feet, and there’s a dedicated shoe deposit counter as well. Inside, there are several smaller temples dedicated to different deities. The crowd is usually light in the morning but increases after noon. There’s also a prasad counter outside where you can buy offerings. If you’re in town, this temple is a must-visit for its divine atmosphere and beautiful surroundings.

The place is very beautiful, and the temple is also lovely—perfect for prayer. The area is clean and well-maintained. There is a bit of a crowd as many people come here to pray. The temple is nicely decorated. The area is spacious, and there is also a park and a restaurant nearby. You can visit this place with your family, friends, or loved ones to pray and enjoy the surroundings.

My visit to Purva Tirupati Sri Balaji Temple was a truly divine experience. Located in the serene surroundings of Guwahati, this temple is a beautiful replica of the famous Tirupati Balaji Temple of Andhra Pradesh. The architecture is grand and detailed, reflecting traditional South Indian temple design with intricate carvings and a peaceful ambiance. The moment I entered the temple premises, the calm environment and the chants of Lord Balaji’s name created a spiritual atmosphere. The temple is well-maintained and very clean. The priests are polite and help guide visitors through the rituals. There’s also a separate section for other deities like Lord Ganesha and Goddess Padmavati. The best time to visit is in the morning or evening during the aarti, when the entire temple glows beautifully with lamps and devotional music. Parking facilities and basic amenities are available for visitors, making it a convenient stop for families and pilgrims. Overall, Purva Tirupati Sri Balaji Temple is not just a place of worship but also a perfect spot to find peace and connect spiritually amidst nature. A must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Guwahati.
Subha K — Google review
This temple is worth visiting if you are traveling to Guwahati, Assam. It serves as a good option in the region (Assam/Northeast) for devotees of Balaji / South‑Indian style Vishnu worship, without having to travel to Tirupati. PROS: 1. ARCHITECTURE OF THE TEMPLE: The architecture is truly gorgeous: it follows the South‑Indian (Dravidian) style, with a white‑granite facade, tall gopuram (entrance tower) and well‑carved pillars. 2. AMBIENCE AND MAINTENANCE: Both the ambience and maintenance are good: The temple grounds are clean, the landscaping is nice, and the overall environment is peaceful. 3. GOOD FACILITIES: There’s ample parking, gardens or open spaces around for families or for spending some time beyond just “darshan”. 4. RITUALS & SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE: The main deity (Lord Venkateswara/“Balaji”) is carved from a single stone of ~4 tons as reported, giving it a sense of grandeur. CONS: 1. PHOTOGRAPHY IS RESTRICTED: Photography inside the temple is restricted / not allowed in certain areas. In my opinion, this is a good restriction since people nowadays are more into taking photos rather than actually 'see'ing and experiencing the place as a whole. 2. CROWDS: At peak times (weekends, festivals) it can get crowded — though the crowding is manageable because the grounds are large. OVERALL VERDICT: This temple is worth visiting, especially if you are in or around Guwahati (Assam) and looking for a spiritually significant, well‑maintained temple dedicated to Lord Balaji / Venkateswara with South Indian architectural flavour. It offers a good blend of devotion + comfortable facilities. It may not feel as remote or “ancient” as some very old temples in hill‑locations, but for its location and style it delivers strongly. PRACTICAL TIPS: • Try to go in the morning or early in the afternoon to avoid most of the crowd. • Wear modest clothing; since the architectural style is South Indian and the setting formal, it’s better to be respectful in attire. • Be aware of the “no photography” rule inside the main sanctum/temple — you can probably take pictures of the exterior and gardens. •If you’re travelling by your own vehicle, parking seems available and convenient. • Spend a little extra time in the gardens/grounds if you like a quieter reflection; the open space is definitely a plus. • Check the timing of the aarti/puja if you wish to attend it — the aarti adds to the experience.

The Balaji Temple in Guwahati, often called "Purva Tirupati," is a striking and serene South Indian-style temple that feels like a piece of Tirupati transported to the Northeast. It's dedicated to Lord Venkateswara and immediately impresses with its towering, pristine white gopuram (entrance tower) and intricate carvings that tell stories of devotion. Inside, you'll find a grand idol of Lord Balaji, carved from a single, massive stone, along with shrines for Goddess Padmavati and Garuda. The overall atmosphere is incredibly peaceful and spiritual, a welcome escape from the city's hustle. Beyond being a place of worship, it's also an architectural marvel, especially when lit up at night, and often hosts cultural events. It really stands out for its blend of sacred tradition and impressive craftsmanship, making it a significant spiritual and visual landmark.
Priyanka S — Google review
If someone ever told you that to meet Lord Venkateswara you need to climb the hills of Tirumala and brave an ocean of devotees — hold your bells! Because nestled quietly in the green lap of Betkuchi, Guwahati, the majestic Purva Tirupati Sri Balaji Temple offers all the South Indian serenity and sacredness, without needing you to pack your trekking shoes. This pristine white marble marvel, inaugurated in 1998, feels like someone hand-carried a slice of Tamil Nadu and lovingly placed it in Assam’s cultural thali. The architecture is authentically Dravidian, the priests speak fluent Tamil and Sanskrit, and the overall vibe is — how do we say it — divine, with a side of filter coffee soulfulness. Facts That’ll Make You Go “Oh Wow” (Or at Least Nod Thoughtfully) - Built by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) and funded largely by devotees and temple trusts, it serves as a spiritual and cultural bridge between South and Northeast India. - The main deity, Lord Venkateswara (Balaji), is flanked by shrines dedicated to Padmavathi Devi and Garuda, his eternal wingman (literally). - The temple is adorned with intricate granite carvings and South Indian-style gopurams, making it Instagram-worthy even if you're not religious. - A community hall and meditation centre nearby offer both spiritual nourishment and spaces for events, yoga, and discourses. Why It's Totally Worth Your Time (and Pranam) - The temple isn’t just a place of worship — it’s a peaceful escape from the noisy world, ideal for soul-searching or simply soul-soothing. - Evening aarti here is a spectacle — chants, lamps, and that surreal sense of “all-is-well” washing over you. - Entry is free, and the crowd is usually well-behaved — making it senior-citizen and family friendly. Reflections: If you ever find yourself in Guwahati needing a spiritual recharge — or just an hour away from traffic and tapori music — this temple delivers tranquility in temple bell-sized doses. Final Verdict: A pocket of peace and piety in Assam that feels like a divine southern detour. You don’t need Google Maps to find peace here — just a little faith.

Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, located in Guwahati, India, is a renowned destination for wildlife enthusiasts and families. Established in 1957, this expansive sanctuary houses a diverse range of exotic animals and serves as a crucial conservation site for endangered species such as the Indian rhinoceros and white tiger. Visitors can also explore the botanical garden's extensive collection of indigenous and exotic plants that enhance the lush landscape.
One of the best zoo I have ever visited. The zoo was quite huge and has large variety of animal and species. Really loved it. It will take approximately 3-4 hours to see the entire zoo by walk. This zoo will definitely give you real wildlife vibe in the mid of forest.

Visited this zoo during with high expectations and I was disappointed to see it in a bad condition. I went with high expectations because this zoo is located in a big city and I thought that it would be filled with various unique animals but I was disappointed to see only a few deers, hog deers, snakes and some other common animals. Many cages were empty with no animals inside. The price of the ticket is ₹33 for adults and you can book it online as well. I have visited Patna zoo which I think was much better than this place. Some construction work was also going on inside the zoo, maybe after the construction is complete this place will become great but for now I think It's best to avoid this place if you are a tourist roaming around Guwahati.

Assam State Zoo Cum Botanical Garden » NaparksThe name of the main zoo in Assam is the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, located in Guwahati. It is the largest zoo in northeastern India and is also referred to as the Guwahati Zoo. Explore Assam State Zoo Botanical Garden: See kangaroos, white deer, zebras, birds, lions, tigers, hippos, and crocodiles. Assam State Zoo is a nice place to visit with family and kids. It has a good variety of animals, birds, and reptiles, and the botanical garden adds to the greenery. The place is spacious and gives a natural vibe, but maintenance could be improved in some areas. Food and drinking water options are limited inside . Overall, a good spot for a day outing in Guwahati.

Visited the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden recently, but the experience was quite underwhelming. The zoo is smaller than expected, and many enclosures were empty, which was disappointing. Some parts were under construction, making it difficult to explore properly. We could only see a few common animals. The place has potential but needs better maintenance, more animals, and proper management to attract visitors again.

Ticket Fare: Rs. 33/- for adults. Online ticket is also available. Same price in both offline and online. Bio toilets available inside this place. I think 2 to 3 hours needed to cover the entire area. Almost every cells were fulfilled. Really very worthy place. A good place for spending weekend. Remains closed on Friday.
Suman P — Google review
FRIDAY CLOSED The ZOO in Assam was great, but nowadays it seems to be diminishing its valued day by day. On my recent visit to the zoo, I was unable to find any structured system except the bottle returning scheme. The e-carts are very irregular and the roads are very disturbing. The cages were broken and rusted, morever most of the animals were not available. I hope the govt of Assam will take necessary steps to "make the Zoo great again" Positive views can be seen as most of the parts were under construction.
Arindom B — Google review
Visited Assam State Zoo last weekend. Overall a good place to hang out if you love nature and animals. Lot of greenery inside and many animals like tiger, rhino, deer, bear, and different types of birds. The place is peaceful and good for families or friends. But honestly, some areas are not well maintained. Few animal cages looked old and water ponds were dirty in some spots. They should improve that part. Entry ticket is cheap — ₹30 per person, which is worth it. You can also take an electric cart if you don’t want to walk, but walking is better to enjoy the surroundings. Good for a one-time visit in Guwahati. If you’re coming from outside, keep at least 2 hours in hand. Would have given 5 stars if maintenance was better.

It is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya and is considered one of the most sacred places of pilgrimage in India. The temple is part of the 51 Shakti Peethas and holds great significance for both Hindus and Tantric worshipers.
Visiting Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati was a deeply spiritual and unforgettable experience. The temple, situated atop Nilachal Hill, offers a serene atmosphere with a breathtaking view of the Brahmaputra River. The energy and divine presence here are truly powerful, and one can instantly feel a sense of peace and devotion. The architecture is ancient and mesmerizing, with intricate carvings that reflect Assam’s rich heritage. The temple is well-managed, and despite the crowds, the darshan was smooth and organized. Local priests and volunteers were very helpful in guiding devotees. My experience of offering prayers and witnessing the rituals felt very pure and soulful. The surroundings are clean, with facilities available for devotees, and shops nearby for prasad and essentials. Kamakhya Temple is not just a place of worship but a sacred journey—one that connects you deeply with the divine mother. A must-visit for anyone traveling to Guwahati. It is better to purchase the VIP tickets online which opens 7 days before. It is being sold out immediately. Better to purchase at 12.01 am 7 days before. It costs Rs.500 per head. If you go by 7 am, you can come out in 2 hours after Darshan. Tuesdays and Saturdays, there will be huge rush. The temple is maintained privately, I believe. The most powerful Shakthi Peet. The main temple was built in an ancient structure and some new structures were built later in front of the main temple 🙏 One can purchase VIP tickets for ₹ 500 per person to visit the গর্ভগৃহ... Famous for its one-horned rhinoceroses, it also offers sightings of wild boars, buffaloes, deer, and a vibrant variety of birds. It's a serene, lush retreat that's perfect for anyone who enjoys wildlife and the tranquility of nature. Beyond the rhinos, the sanctuary is teeming with diverse wildlife, including wild boars, Asiatic buffaloes, barking deer, and leopards, though the latter are more elusive. I had the best experience of travelling to Shillong and Guwahati with Anshuman travels. It was very well coordinated . The car arrived on time at the airport and the chauffer was very punctual and we'll behaved. The hotels they provided were standard and trustworthy with quality rooms and food. Also I got back my set of airdopes which I lost at the hotel room entirely at their initiative. I highly recommend Anshuman travels!!

Do not use this travel agent; he earns massive cuts from drivers and hotels and is not committed to a good service. We were travelling from England to see Kaziranga Nature Reserve and for our 6 day trip, Anshuman Travels booked us to visit Kaziranga on the last day, which would have been fine except we realised after reaching Assam that on the last two days of our trip, the safaris were cancelled owing to Gaja Mahotsav. This was a shock and disappointing to say the least as we missed the most looked forward to part of our long-planned trip. Anshuman did not take any responsibility for this and did not rearrange things for us. We were encouraged by positive reviews online but had an awful experience with this agent. The hotels booked were sub-standard and the agent did not take any responsibility for changing things for us. Instead, he cancelled our bookings and did not return our money. He took Rs 30,000 advance and only provided services worth Rs 21,000. He cancelled our bookings and left us stranded without a booked hotel for four nights. Since we were travelling with children and parents, this left us in a precarious situation. Very sad that this should happen to anyone. No apology rendered; not even money refunded for services not provided.

He is a very good driver and also helped us finding vegetarian hotels across the tour. During the tour Biswas da was very quick to address a few challenges that came our way. He was also very helpful with his inputs on elephant safari and Brahmaputra cruise. Over all I recommend there services if you are planning a north east trip.

The trip was nicely organised and even though we had many intermittent changes in our plans, our host Swarnendu provided us with good alternatives... Although admittedly the driver of our Innova was at times not as cooperative as we would have liked, all in all it was an amazing experience. The hotels were also very good and the overall experience was just amazing and a week that will be etched in our memories forever.

This temple is one of the ancient temples in India as well as Assam, a very beautiful place and surrounded by mother nature, and anyone can google about this temple if you want to know more about this temple. But my main concern is regarding the cleanliness and the pujari system. Immediately after parking people are asking for buying puja materials then after entering the temple pujaris are telling me to give money here and there and after coming out of the temple I visited the pond to see the turtle 🐢, and my goodness the pond was so dirty and full of algae. The temple authority should maintain the pond as well as the surroundings of the temple.

This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.it was build by the koch king Narnarayan dev. The inner sanctorum currently has medium sized carving of hayagriva or horse necked (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu) flanked by two smaller Vishnu idols on either side in the form of Jagannath,Vasudeva,Gorur pakshi. It is impressive and the hall has completely fallen down with ruins scattered everywhere and they have added modern wooden and tin sheet hall to the historic sanctum for completeness sake. The sculpture on the outer walls in the form of lively hayagreeva, rama lakshmana,Vishnu carried by Garuda flanked by lady helper assistants, warrior sitting on elephant fighting with lion, fading away astadikpala, damaged warrior on horse, depict of ramayan a, different types of devi form, immortal expressions of couple on makaram or crocodile chariot, few social themes of devotees and musicians, human Vishnu travelling on horse, white washed expressions of warrior couple and finally Narasimha removing the intestines of hiranyakasipu and his sad expression. The Vishnu puskar is pond lies front of the temple which is home to local fished of assam and very rare turtle species ( green soft turtle). It is believed here that they are the form of Lord Vishnu ( matashya and Kurma internation) , and people come there to feed them.

An absolutely wonderful experience! Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park has the largest collection of orchid varieties in the world, and it’s truly mesmerizing to see. The instructors were extremely passionate and explained each variety with great clarity, you can really feel their love for what they do. All the staff were polite, friendly, and deeply committed to their work. We also got to watch some of the local Assamese dance performances they were preparing, which were amazing! The park itself is rich in flora, and the environment feels so alive. Don’t miss trying the traditional Assamese thali at the park, it was spectacular, with at least 16 delicious items. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kaziranga ,a must-visit spot that beautifully showcases Assam’s natural and cultural heritage.

Don't skip this on your way to the Kaziranga safari adventure. It only takes a few hours on your way to the park, and it is a good cultural experience of the people in the region, and the orchid garden is quite lovely. You will see so many variants of native and non-native orchids, and learn how they grow and thrive. There are a few other agricultural and cultural displays (traditional dancing, rice/miller education etc) you can see as well.

One of the few things you can do apart from safariy it is a really cool place with a lot to do, we think 3 hours should be enough, we went to see the orchids, amazing musical instruments museum, cactus greenhouse, some medicinal herbs selling point we didn't have time for, a really nice bamboo park, a restaurant. They perform dances on stage, I think they do it all day round, we came there just after the morning safari and saw it at least twice, so it's hard to miss it.

Park
Nature & Parks
Agnigarh is a famous hillside area with a rich history rooted in Hindu mythology. The park features numerous historic sculptures and offers breathtaking viewpoints of the surrounding area, including the Brahmaputra river. However, visitors should be prepared to climb several steps to reach the top, which may be difficult for elderly individuals. Once at the summit, visitors can enjoy a small park and garden while admiring a bird's eye view from the watchtower.
This fortress is at such a beautiful location. View of Brahmaputra at evening hour must be breathtaking. I visited in the noon so it was quite warm but the garden is worth spending time and knowing the history of king Bana and his daughter Usha. Sculpture representation of historic events is done in a nice way. Entry ticket is 30rs per head. Parking is 30rs. About 500 steps to climb up to go till the top. The climb is worth..
Shweta K — Google review
If Romeo and Juliet had a Northeast Indian reboot with a fiery twist, it would be set atop the Agnigarh Hill — a place where love quite literally burned bright. Welcome to the iconic Agnigarh Fort in Tezpur, Assam — where history meets mythology with a dash of Bollywood-level drama and panoramic views to boot. What's in a Name? ‘Agni’ means fire, and ‘Garh’ means fortress. Put them together and voilà – you get the "Fire Fortress". Built to keep lovers apart (yes, seriously), this hill was supposedly surrounded by perpetual flames, making it the medieval version of a “do not disturb” sign. According to local legends from the Mahabharata, this is where Princess Usha, daughter of demon king Banasura, was imprisoned after she fell in love with Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. Daddy dearest didn’t approve (obviously), so he locked her up in this lava-ringed love prison. Because nothing says “no boyfriend” like a fire moat! Mythology + Romance = Must Visit Today, there’s no fire — just stairs (a lot of them!) — that take you to the top where the fort ruins sit like a wise old sage. There are beautifully sculpted statues that narrate the whole Usha-Aniruddha saga, perfect for that “deep in thought” selfie. And the view? Oh, the view! You get a sweeping panorama of the majestic Brahmaputra River, the town of Tezpur, and if you're lucky, a cloud photobomb or two. It's like nature gave Agnigarh a cinematic filter. Fun Facts to Brag About: - Agnigarh is one of the oldest mythologically significant sites in Assam. - It has a spiral staircase pathway with murals and storytelling sculptures – basically, Game of Thrones meets Amar Chitra Katha. - The spot is popular with couples – ironic, considering it was built to prevent romance. Final Verdict Agnigarh is not just a fort, it’s an emotion. Equal parts romantic and rebellious, it's ideal for history buffs, hopeless romantics, and sweaty trekkers alike.

Assam's one of the important historical place. The park was well maintained when we visited this place. Lord krishna is associated with this place. Nice experience. We could witnessed the beauty of river Brahmaputra.❤️
Nitul K — Google review
It is a historical place from which the name of the city “Tezpur” derived. It is said that this is place where the daughter of King Banasura was kept isolated. Later the war between Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva took place, which led the name of the place. Anirudha, the grandson of Lord Krishna was being attracted by the Prince Usha, got married later. King Banasura (who was the devotee of Lord Shiva) arrested him on hearing this news. It led the war between Banasura and Krishna. However being the devotee of Shiva, Lord Shiva came to rescue and it was place of blood when the war had started between Lord Shiva and Lord Krishna. Lord Vishnu came to end this war later. The entry fee is Rs 30 for adults and Rs 10 for minors. However, there is no maintenance, no proper description neither clean properly. The authority should take action to keep the sentiments and mythological beliefs intact. It has a watch tower from where the city and the surroundings, including majestic view of River Bramhaputra can be seen. But still need proper maintenance!

Agnigarh (অগ্নিগড়) is one of the most beautiful and historically rich tourist spots in Tezpur, Assam. The place is deeply connected with the famous love story of Princess Usha, daughter of King Bana, and Aniruddha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. According to legend, King Bana built a fortress surrounded by fire to keep Usha away from Aniruddha, and that is how the place got its name – “Agnigarh” (Fort of Fire). Today, when you visit Agnigarh, you can still feel the essence of those stories through the artistic sculptures and statues built along the pathways. These sculptures beautifully depict the legendary tale, making the visit not only scenic but also culturally meaningful. The hilltop location provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Brahmaputra River and Tezpur town. 🌿 The climb is not very difficult, and the pathways are well-maintained. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy nature, take photographs, or simply sit and relax. During the evening, especially around sunset, the atmosphere becomes magical. I found the area very clean and visitor-friendly, with enough space to walk and spend time with family or friends. It’s also a great place for students and tourists who want to learn about Assam’s mythology and heritage. Overall, Agnigarh is not just a tourist attraction but a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. A must-visit place in Tezpur for anyone who wants to explore the heritage of Assam. – Priyanuj Hazarika (Local Guide)

Sri Sri Mahabhairab Temple

Mentioned on
1 list
Hindu temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
The Mahabhairab Temple, believed to be constructed in the 8th century by demon king Banasur, is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple premises are well-maintained with basic facilities and have significant historical and religious importance. The Shiv linga present in the temple is considered lively and growing. Visitors can witness the morning Aarti, which is performed divinely, and feed pigeons that flock around the area.
Tucked away on the tranquil hillocks of Tezpur, the iconic Mahabhairab Temple isn't just a spiritual pitstop — it’s a soul-stirring experience, where mythology, mystery, and mountain breeze come together in poetic rhythm. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his fearsome Bhairava avatar, this ancient shrine feels like a chapter from an old scripture — one that still breathes. Legend has it, and Assamese grandmothers will happily vouch for it, that King Banasura, a zealous devotee of Shiva and a mythological figure himself, founded this temple. The shivlinga housed here is believed to be one of the largest in India, carved out of a single stone and possibly dating back to the 8th to 10th century CE, though some whisper it’s even older. Fascinating Nuggets to Digest Before You Bow: - The temple's name — “Mahabhairab” — literally translates to the Great Terrifying One, and yet the vibe is soothing, almost meditative. A paradox only Shiva could pull off. - It comes alive during Shivratri, when devotees queue up in serpentine lines (pun intended), and the air is thick with chants, incense, and an unmistakable scent of divinity (and jalebis). - Local lore claims the original lingam was self-manifested (Swayambhu) and that Shiva himself appeared here in Bhairava form to bless his devotee Banasura. - It’s managed today by the State Government of Assam, preserving not just the structure but the legacy it holds for both pilgrims and curious wanderers. My Reverie: There’s something timeless about Mahabhairab Temple — perhaps it’s the whispering pines, the distant bells, or the sensation that you’re standing at a spiritual crossroads where the past and present exchange pleasantries. Whether you're a devout pilgrim or a history buff with a penchant for ancient secrets, this temple offers a slice of serenity with a dollop of divinity. Final Thought: Go for the blessings, stay for the energy. And while you're at it, breathe in that Tezpur air — it's laced with legends.

Being a nature lover ,I loved this national park. Cut off from locality, this park has thick jungle and tall grass covers the whole area. Thus difficult to sight wildlife most of the time. People don't like secluded area and silence should avoid this park. This park has one division and covers around 2296 square km area . This park has grass and wood lands. Deers are found in large numbers and can be seen at the entrance of the park also. Rhino numbers are also increasing. We saw wild boar and wild elephants also apart from deer and rhino . I spotted many species of resident birds too. Overall a very good experience for me Jeep and elephant safari is available in this park. But due to lack of staff and infrastructure the forest department can't handle many tourists. And I wish only nature and wildlife lovers should go to this park to keep this place unspoiled .

A wonderful experience indeed. Stay at the Forest Inspection Bungalow deep into the forest was just awesome. Met a large tusker just after entering the park. Though the jeep safari did not bear any fruit but the view from the IB was mesmerizing and saw many animals including elephant, rhino, wild boar, deers, birds etc. from the comfort of the IB. The view from the backyard of the IB is something to remember for lifetime. Overall a great stay.

This monastery is located in a very beautiful place. We reached there in the evening, and by the time we arrived, the monastery was almost closed. So, we just took some pictures from outside. It was truly a beautiful sight. From there, we could see a Buddha statue at a distance.

Its a very beautiful monastery. Very quiet and silent place for worshiping Lord Gautam Buddha. It has training and a learning center for studies on buddhism . Students from the age of 5 and above are allowed to take admission here and training.

This monastery located on the upper reaches of Bomdila is also known as Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Lling Monastery. It was built in 1965 by the 12th reincarnate of Tsona Gontse Rinpoche. Found the monastery to be very vibrant and active as it houses a large number of boys and young men who are being imparted training to become lamas. As this monastery is located on an elevated area, it offers an aerial view of Bomdila.

On the way back to Guwahati from Tawang, we decided to stay at Bomdila due low visibility on road. In the morning, we made a small detour to Bomdilla Monastery. Some festivals/ prayers were going on at the morning (8.30 AM). The students there offered us a local tibetan sweet delicacy made out of pasta and yak cheese. Then they offered us salty tea with yak milk. The experience was surreal.

Bomdila Monastery, located in the serene hills of Arunachal Pradesh, is a peaceful and spiritually uplifting place that beautifully reflects Tibetan Buddhist culture. Also known as the Gontse Gaden Rabgyel Lling Monastery, it offers stunning views of the surrounding Himalayas and the Bomdila valley below. The monastery’s architecture is vibrant and intricate, with colorful murals and prayer flags that create a tranquil, sacred atmosphere. Visitors often praise the calmness of the place — it’s less crowded than many other monasteries, making it ideal for quiet reflection. The monks are welcoming, and if you visit during prayer sessions, the rhythmic chants and sounds of the drums are truly mesmerizing. Overall, Bomdila Monastery is not just a religious site but also a cultural gem — a perfect stop for anyone seeking peace, beauty, and a glimpse into the spiritual life of Arunachal Pradesh

Bomdila Monastery, also called Gentse Gaden Rabgyel Lling, is a beautiful Buddhist monastery in Arunachal Pradesh. Built in 1965, it’s known for its peaceful vibe, prayer hall, Buddha temple, and monk school. It resembles the Tsona Gontse Monastery in South Tibet and holds great importance for Mahayana Buddhists.

************ Om Ma-ni Pad-me Hum ***************** Visited Bomdila Buddhist Monastery during my solo trip to Bomdila while staying at the Circuit House. Every evening after working remotely, I would take a 40-minute trek up to the monastery, and it quickly became the highlight of my stay. Perched on top of a mountain, the monastery offers a breathtaking view of the valley below and an atmosphere of absolute peace and serenity. The quiet surroundings, the gentle breeze, and the sound of prayer flags fluttering in the wind created a sense of calm that’s hard to describe. It was the perfect place to unwind, reflect, and find inner stillness after a long day. Truly a must-visit spot in Bomdila — not just for its beauty, but for the sense of peace it brings to the soul.

This was a pretty typical dzong in a lot of ways. On a ridge below higher mountains, overlooking a valley and river below. Compared to other dzongs, it's a bit mediocre. Not particularly big, not particularly impressive, and the surrounding scenery is pretty average. You won't be missing much if you never make it as far east as Trashigang to see this dzong. However, if you're in Trashigang, of course it's worth stopping at, especially since it's the only noteworthy place in town.
Gunnar C — Google review
Known as the “Fortress of the Auspicious Hill” the magnificent Trashigang Monastery sits on the edge of a ridge overlooking the Drangme chu / River and surrounding valleys. The Dzong served as the eastern political stronghold for more than 300 years warding off various local and Tibetan invasions. With the steep cliff on all the three sides, this spectacular structure is only accessible from the North through a narrow road making it one of the strategically located Dzong in Bhutan. The Dzong withstood many Tibetan invasions and according to the legend, Tibetan invaders were so overwhelmed upon seeing the Dzong, that before retreating remarked that the Dzong was not on the ground but suspended in the sky. Like many of the Dzong in Bhutan the building of the Trashigang Dzong was also prophesized by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel (the saint who unified Bhutan) to spread Buddhism and to garner control over the eastern parts of the country. Today the Dzong serves as a school for monastic education for the monks along with sharing space with the offices of the District Administration. Along with admiring this wonderful architecture and awe inspiring view of the valleys, at the same time a perfect opportunity awaits for travelers to have photographs and interactions to get more insight on the spiritual lives of the monks.

Bodies of Water
Sela Pass, located in the border district of Tawang, is a high-altitude pass known for its sacred Buddhist lake and year-round snow cover. The pass holds historical significance as it connects the Tawang district to the rest of the country and was a site of valiant battles during the 1962 war. Visitors can pay their respects at Jaswantgarh War Memorial, dedicated to martyr Jaswant Rawat.
An awe-inspiring destination nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, Sela Pass is nothing short of breathtaking. At over 13,700 feet, the pass offers snow-covered landscapes, pristine views, and an atmosphere so serene it feels almost sacred. But what truly makes Sela Pass special is the silent strength of our Indian Army personnel who stand guard here, enduring extreme cold and harsh conditions to protect our nation. Their presence at such high-altitude posts is nothing short of heroic. It’s humbling to witness their dedication and courage in a region where survival itself is a challenge. The journey through Sela Pass is filled with winding roads, frozen lakes, and patches of untouched snow — every turn offers a postcard-worthy view. Whether you're a nature lover or someone seeking a deeper sense of patriotism, this place will move you. Visiting Sela Pass is not just about the landscape — it's about honoring the spirit of our brave soldiers. Salute to their unwavering duty and sacrifices. A must-visit for every Indian.

Can never get tired of this place and this road. Looks like you are climbing to the skies. Now that the tunnel is there, the pass and lake has become a tourist thing rather than a road people take to Tawang and back. It's good we have the tunnel but nothing beats the experience of this cold and wind at 4000 metres from sea level. A driver's paradise!
Nayan D — Google review
It’s a beautiful and chilly place. Sela Pass sits at an altitude of around 13,700 feet. The main Sela Gate is about 200 meters from the pass, and just below it lies the stunning Sela Lake which is surrounded by mountains. Right in front of Sela Pass, there’s a small stall where you can enjoy a warm cup of tea or coffee, cold drinks or energy drinks, some noodles, and a few snacks.
Eshwan S — Google review
I recently visited Sela Pass in October 2025, and it was one of the most mesmerizing places I’ve ever seen. Located at an altitude of over 13,000 feet, Sela Pass connects Tawang with the rest of Arunachal Pradesh and offers a breathtaking view of snow-covered peaks and crystal-clear lakes. The famous Sela Lake, surrounded by snow even in early winter, adds to the magic of the place — it’s truly a photographer’s paradise. The air up there is crisp and cold, and the whole area feels peaceful and surreal. It’s the kind of place where you can simply stop, breathe, and take in the beauty of nature in its purest form. However, the journey to Sela Pass is quite challenging, with winding roads, sharp turns, and changing weather conditions. Drivers should be cautious, especially during snowfall or fog, as visibility can drop quickly. There are very few shops or food stalls near the pass, so it’s wise to carry your own snacks and warm beverages. The temperature can drop suddenly, so wearing proper winter clothing is essential. Despite the tough road, the view from Sela Pass is worth every effort. It’s one of those rare places that makes you feel both peaceful and amazed at the same time. Overall, Sela Pass is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Tawang a stunning blend of natural beauty, serenity, and adventure that will stay with you forever.
Tauhidur R — Google review
Sela Pass, perched at an altitude of approximately 13,700 feet (4,170 meters), stands out as one of India’s most spectacular high-altitude mountain gateways, connecting the Tawang and West Kameng districts in Arunachal Pradesh. The journey to reach Sela Pass is both exhilarating and rewarding, with winding roads that are often sheathed in snow through winter and splashed with greenery during summer. The drive itself, though challenging due to sometimes rough road conditions and rapidly changing weather, is compensated by panoramic views of the majestic Eastern Himalayas and a sense of serene remoteness. The crown jewel of Sela Pass is the tranquil Sela Lake, referred to locally as Paradise Lake, which lies just beside the pass. In winter, the lake frequently freezes over, offering a breathtaking icy spectacle, while in other seasons, its pristine blue waters mirror the open Himalayan skies. The sight of rhododendrons blooming in spring only enhances its allure. The spiritual significance of the area is marked by the presence of over a hundred sacred lakes nearby, cherished by the region’s Buddhist communities. The pass is also steeped in local history and folklore, including the tale of Sela and Indian Army hero Jaswant Singh Rawat, whose bravery is commemorated at nearby Jaswant Garh. There’s a simple army café at the top where visitors can enjoy a hot drink while soaking in the views. For any traveler exploring Arunachal Pradesh, Sela Pass is an unmissable destination—a harmonious blend of stunning scenery, adventure, and cultural heritage.
Imran H — Google review
This is the nature created by God, which does not bother to look at. The lake is so so beautiful. There are tea stalls near the lake. The Sela Pass gate is 150 meters away from the lake. There is an army camp also near the lake.
Manabendra K — Google review
Sela Pass is one of those places that truly takes your breath away, both literally and figuratively. Located at around 13,700 feet, it connects Bomdila and Tawang and offers absolutely stunning views of snow-covered peaks and crystal-clear Sela Lake. The drive up can be a bit challenging, especially during the colder months, but the scenery makes every turn worth it. When I visited, it was quite busy since it was the holiday season, but once I stepped out and took in the cold mountain air, everything felt peaceful. The frozen lake, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and the quiet stillness all created a sense of calm that’s hard to describe. If you’re traveling from Dirang or Tawang, try to start early to enjoy the sunrise views and avoid traffic. Also, be prepared for sudden weather changes, it can get really cold and foggy in no time. Overall, Sela Pass is not just a place to pass through, it’s a destination in itself, where nature, spirituality, and adventure come together beautifully.

The Jaswantgarh War Memorial is one of the most emotional and inspiring places I’ve ever visited. Located amidst the breathtaking hills of Arunachal Pradesh, near the Tawang–Sela Pass route, this memorial is not just a tourist stop — it’s a sacred place that fills you with pride, respect, and deep emotion for the Indian Army. This memorial honors Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, a true hero of the 1962 Indo-China war. The way the place has been maintained by the Indian Army is simply outstanding — clean, organized, and filled with a sense of reverence. You can actually feel the spirit of bravery and sacrifice here. The soldiers on duty explain the history and story of Jaswant Singh with great respect and emotion, making the visit even more meaningful. Inside the memorial, you’ll see Jaswant Singh’s personal belongings, photos, weapons, and a detailed account of the battle. What really touches the heart is how the army still treats him as if he’s alive — his bed is made every morning, his food is served daily, and his duty roster continues even today. It’s a powerful reminder of the undying bond between a soldier and his regiment. The surroundings are equally mesmerizing — snow-capped mountains, fluttering prayer flags, and calm silence make it a perfect blend of nature and patriotism. The small army canteen nearby offers tea and snacks, and the soldiers’ warmth makes you feel like family. If you’re traveling towards Tawang or coming back from Sela Pass, do not miss stopping here. Spend a few quiet minutes to pay your respects — it’s an experience that will stay in your heart forever. Verdict- A must-visit for every Indian. The Memorial has been designed using Buddhist Architectural and Cultural elements, including Prayer Wheels and Flags, Colorful Serpents, Dragons and other Buddhist Relics. A Beautiful Statue of Lord Buddha can also be seen inside. Tawang War Memorial is an absolute must-visit when you’re in Tawang. It’s a place to pay heartfelt homage to our brave Indian soldiers who safeguard our nation in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. The cultural show offers a wonderful glimpse into the vibrant local Monpa culture, while the sound and light show is truly inspiring — showcasing the courage and dedication of our soldiers as they defend India’s sovereignty against all odds. A major highlight is the Museum of Valour, dedicated to Major Ralengnao Bob Khathing, the unsung hero who led the peaceful integration of Tawang into India. The museum also honors his remarkable contributions in establishing key security forces such as the Sashastra Seema Bal, Nagaland Armed Police, and Naga Regiment. Beyond its military significance, the museum beautifully captures the rich culture and heritage of the Monpa community and offers moving insights into the 1962 India-China war. Truly a must-experience destination that fills you with pride and respect for India’s heroes. 🇮🇳

The memorial is built in respect and memory of the sacrifices and bravery of Indian Army in 1962 war between India and China. The warriors defended the enemy at their last drop of blood in the battlefield. They set the example of valour with less modern equipment and artillery in comparison with their counterparts. The ultimate sacrifice and patriotism still gives a goosebump and feels proud of our Indian Army. In the memory, it makes the arrangements of a light and sound show which depicts the bravery of 1962, the history and significance of Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh and in India. It also consists of a cultural exhibition to showcase the traditional dance, Yak Dance, Snow Lion Dance etc to promote the and spread the local traditional culture. Buying tickets for the both the show in the morning is a must to avoid the chance of missing the show because of ticket scarcity and availability. Some one may visit the museum just adjacent to the memorial which costs Ra 70 per person. It also consists of monuments and the names of all the brave heroes of India in Bumla and Zimithang sector. Its a must visit place in Tawang to respect, know and pay homage to the protectors of our country and ourselves.

This is a historical place dating back a few centuries and I am no one to review this place 😊 However did I say it is a awesome, peaceful place with a panoramic view of the Tawang town and the valley! Its the largest practicing Buddhist Monastery in Asia. Please get accompanied by a guide or a local to sync in the significance and history. Also to add - do not touch or play with the items in first floor of the museum, the relics survived a few hundred years, they are fragile and you may end up in jail. Special mention a set of pre-historic tusks found in 17th century, possibly from a mammoth.

Bumla Pass, located about 37km away from Tawang, is a historic trade route that sits at an elevation of 15,200 ft above sea level. It holds significant historical importance as it witnessed the 1962 battle between India and China and serves as an international border between the two nations. Visitors can explore the area and take photos near the Mac Mohan Line, which was drawn in 1913-14 by British Colonial Administrator Henry MacMohan.
Visiting Bum La Pass was truly a memorable experience! Just a heads-up for travelers: you need a special permit to visit, which must be arranged a day in advance. Make sure to carry a copy of your ID and travel documents to get it done smoothly—usually through a local travel agent or your hotel. Once you reach the pass the next morning, the Indian Army gives a short briefing about the history and significance of the Indo-China border. It's incredibly insightful and fills you with a sense of pride and respect. The road journey itself is scenic and thrilling, with snow-capped views depending on the season. Highly recommend it for anyone visiting Tawang—it's not just about the destination but also the emotions tied to it.

A Life-Changing Experience at Bumla Pass – 15,200 ft of Pride & Patriotism 🇮🇳 Visiting Bumla Pass was nothing short of an emotional and humbling experience. There are no proper tar roads leading up – just rocky terrain and breathtaking views. As the Indian Army rightly says, “What is a lifetime adventure for you is a way of life for us.” Hats off to our brave soldiers! The journey to 15,500 ft above sea level was challenging, with freezing winds and low oxygen levels, but every bit of it was worth it. Along the way, we passed many colorful lakes, each more beautiful than the last. When we finally reached the top, we were welcomed by the army who escorted us to the Indo-China border. The view was absolutely stunning and surreal. Listening to the story of the 1962 India-China war and the sacrifices made by our soldiers moved me deeply. I felt so proud and grateful. The army also took our photos and handed us a special certificate marking our visit to the 15,200 ft Indo-China border – it took a little time (~1 hour), but receiving it was truly special for me. Despite the altitude and harsh conditions, every spot had a functioning army-run cafeteria offering warm, budget-friendly food. Their dedication and hospitality at such heights truly deserves a salute. 💂‍♂️ Thank you to the Indian Army for not just protecting us, but also for making us feel welcome, safe, and proud. 🇮🇳❤️

This place is the India-China border. From Tawang we reach Y-junction and then turn towards Bumla pass. There is snow all around but photography is restricted in Army area. Once you reach the entry point, you have to take a number. The Army personnel will take a batch of about 50 people towards border. No photos at border. The Army staff will tell you about significance of this area, for about 15 minutes. Then you come back, while coming back photos can be clicked. The weather is very cold. There were rain and snow flurries. Enjoyed the visit and the weather. At the entry, we can have maggi, Tea/Coffee. Army staff is helpful..

Bumla Pass is a high-altitude mountain pass located at an elevation of approximately 15,200 feet (4,633 meters) in the Himalayas, on the India-China border. It is situated in the Tawang district of Arunachal Pradesh, India, and holds significant historical and strategic importance. Key Points about Bumla Pass: • Location: Bumla Pass lies about 37 kilometers from Tawang town in Arunachal Pradesh, near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) between India and China. • Historical Significance: Bumla Pass played a key role during the 1962 Sino-Indian War when Chinese forces invaded the region. Today, it is often remembered as a site of that conflict. • Tourist Attraction: While it is a military post, tourists can visit Bumla Pass with special permission from the Indian Army and local authorities. The scenic drive to the pass is an attraction in itself, offering breathtaking views of snow-clad mountains, lakes, and remote landscapes. • Border Meetings: The pass is one of the five officially designated border meeting points between India and China, where military officials from both sides meet for discussions to ensure peace and resolve issues along the border. • Weather and Access: Due to the high altitude, the area experiences harsh weather, and snow often blocks the pass, especially during winter months. Visitors need to be prepared for cold temperatures and ensure proper acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness.

Sungester Lake is a serene body of water situated in a picturesque location, offering stunning views of the nearby mountains. Although the roads leading to it from Tawang are passable, those from Y junction covering approximately 13.5km can be challenging. However, visitors attest that the trip is well worth it due to its exceptional beauty and surroundings adorned with trees and hills that complement each other perfectly.
It is a High altitude lake about 12000 feet above sea level. Formed by an earthquake in 1950 this lake is Surrounded by snow capped hills and lush green forests. The lake is famous for its breathtaking beauty and serene views. The trunks of the dead trees in the lake are a matter of curiosity for all. During winter migratory Golden ducks can be spotted in the lake. It is said that a pair of Golden ducks brings peace and prosperity. The lake generally freezes during winter and tourists walk on it and click photos. The Indian Army maintains the lake. The Army also runs a Wet Canteen cum Cafe for the visitors. Tourist taxis can be hired to reach the lake. The road to the lake is in good shape and condition. Warm clothes and high resolution cameras are recommended. Parking is not a problem and wheelchairs can be driven along the lake’s footpath. Public toilets are available though they need maintenance and care. Great place to have great pics.

This place is as beautiful as it the road to this place. It's serene and clean. This is named after Madhuri Dikshit as there was a shooting done here from film Koyala. It's original name of Shungetsar Lake. This place is maintained by Indian Army and they run a cafe here , you can get Dosa, cofee, maggie, momos and Chola Bhatura. There is a small gift shop here. The coffee Shop is very cozy and sweet. The place is photogenic and the journey is incomplete without taking a photograph here. Parking is difficult. You can come here with your own vehicle as well and no permit id required till this place. Above this lake to travel further you need permit which can be taken through a agent with some documents and additional fee.

It is an absolutely beautiful lake surrounded by mountains, a must visit when in Tawang. Although there are so many such lakes in India but this one is more is the most beautiful that I have found till date maybe because I visited during the monsoon season when this is at its greenest best with clouds floating all around. This lake has become famous as it was pictured in one song in the movie “Koyla”, it is also known locally as Madhuri Lake. As with quite a few places in Tawang region, this lake too is mostly manned by the Indian Army, they also run a small but efficient restaurant at the lake side.

Madhuri Lake, also known as Sangestar Tso, is one of the most breathtaking destinations in Arunachal Pradesh. Located around 30 km from Tawang, this high-altitude lake sits peacefully amidst snow-capped mountains and dense pine forests. The lake was formed naturally after an earthquake, and the sight of partially submerged tree trunks rising from its crystal-clear water makes it truly unique. The drive to the lake is adventurous — winding mountain roads, crisp air, and spectacular views at every turn. Though the journey can be a bit rough, the moment you arrive, the serenity of the place makes it all worthwhile. The calm waters, fluttering prayer flags, and complete silence create a deeply peaceful atmosphere that touches your soul. Madhuri Lake became famous after a scene from the Bollywood movie Koyla featuring Madhuri Dixit was filmed here, but beyond its cinematic fame, it remains a place of natural purity and spiritual calm. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, or simply someone seeking peace away from the noise of city life, Madhuri Lake is an unforgettable experience — a perfect blend of beauty, stillness, and Himalayan magic.

I had a truly unforgettable experience visiting Sungester Lake, also known as Madhuri Lake. The stunning blend of serene blue water, peaceful silence, and surrounding mountains makes it one of Tawang’s most magical spots. Even in early winter, the lake looked spectacular with its calm reflections and dramatic landscape. The place feels untouched and spiritually calming. The drive to the lake is equally scenic and worth every moment. A must-visit destination in Tawang for nature lovers and photographers alike.

An Inner Line Permit may be required to visit Arunachal Pradesh and the lake, which can often be obtained through your hotel or a local driver. The lake is popularly known as Madhuri Lake, named after the Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, who shot a song there, though locals prefer its original name, Sungester or Shungatser.

It was the first Zampu (Tubo ruler) in Tibet’s legend. Later, the fifth Dalai Lama turned Yongbula Khang into a temple. During the Cultural Revolution, part of the temple in Yongbulakang was mobilized and demolished by local young politicians. In the process, some cultural relics were lost, leaving only ruins. After 1982, the building was restored and included in the protection list. The last time I came was at the end of 2019 before the epidemic. At that time, the only way to go up and down was by horseback or on foot. This time the road was repaired and battery cars were finally available. The scenery above is just as good, but the back mountain is closed due to road reconstruction. The last photo was taken when I climbed to the back mountain last time. Tradruk Temple, also known as Changju Temple or Tantok Temple, is a 7th-century Buddhist monastery located in Tibet. It was built by King Songtsen Gampo and is one of the oldest temples in the region. The temple was established to subdue a demoness and features thangka artwork embellished with pearls. Legend has it that the king had to transform into a hawk to overcome a local dragon in order to build the monastery.
The very 1st temple in Tibetan area, worth a visit if you're in Shannan.

Tradruk Temple is the earliest great geomantic temple (650AD) after the Jokhang and some sources say it predates that temple. The temple is a little out of the way from the usual tourist sites, but considering the strong heritage and historical background, I highly recommend visiting for appreciation of the Tibetan culture and Buddhism. Do note that the temple closes early, like around 5-6pm, and may differ on different time of the year. Please plan your visit accordingly.

Tung Tan Can Bo transformed into a great mandarin to conquer the pagoda, so he named the pagoda Chang zhu. In the history of Tibetan Buddhism, famous figures such as Master Padmasambhava, Milareba (Mila Nhat Ba)... all practiced around this monastery. The practice sites of the ancestors are still worshiped by pilgrims. In addition, Princess Van Thanh and the 5th and 13th Dalai Lamas also practiced here and still keep memorabilia. Therefore, later, the throne came under the management of the Cach Lo sect. The temple has an architecture similar to Dai Chieu Pagoda. In the hall, in addition to worshiping Buddha, there are also statues of Tung Tan Can Bo, two pagoda officials and the great mandarin Loc Dong Tan. Moreover, the treasure of the pagoda is the pearl Thangka painting of Quan Am sitting on the mountain (1.2m*2m), a total of 29,026 pearls and other extremely precious stones such as ruby, sapphire, amethyst, green coral, red coral, yellow... every day, this painting attracts many devotees to come and admire. (Translated by Google) It is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Tibet, built by King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century. It was founded in the same period as the Jokhang of Lhasa to subjugate, according to tradition, a gigantic she-devil, larger than Tibet, whose right shoulder it would immobilize. The entrance opens into a courtyard surrounded by cloisters. At the end of the courtyard there is a building with a plan similar to that of the Jokhang, with an external and an internal kora. The Tuje Lhakhang contains the statues of the Tibetan trinity: Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara, bodhisattva of compassion), Jampelyang (Manjusri, bodhisattva of wisdom), Chana Dorje (Vajrapani, wrathful bodhisattva, of energy). On the upper floor there is a tangka made with 29,000 pearls. The frescoes that adorn the various chapels are mostly tantric in subject: yab-yum, wisdom and "wrathful" offerings, the Green and White Taras. Interesting three-dimensional mandala.
