Barabar Caves, located in the Makhdumpur region of Jehanabad district, Bihar, India, are ancient cave dwellings believed to date back to around 250 BC. These rock-cut caves were used by ascetics from the Ajivika sect and some even have Ashokan inscriptions.
Can’t recommend this place more. Simply amazing caves with polished granite walls that work as mirrors. Super sound fun with echoes and simply amazing work done by the builder’s centuries ago. Free entry. Guard will lock and unlock the caves and position himself for a tip on conclusion of your visit. These caves should be advertised more.

A great experience. The 3 rooms in the rook are in different stages of contraction. The guide was very nice opening all the locked doors. The walls are polished in a sense that it reflects sound and light. Very very impressivr

The Barabar Caves, located in Bihar, India, are a remarkable testament to ancient Indian rock-cut architecture. Dating back to the 3rd century BCE, these caves are the oldest surviving examples of such craftsmanship and were used by ascetic groups like the Ajivikas. The caves, carved into granite hills, are notable for their astonishingly smooth, mirror-like interiors and precise geometric shapes. The Lomas Rishi Cave, with its beautifully carved doorway resembling wooden architecture, stands out as a masterpiece. The acoustic properties of the caves are particularly intriguing, enhancing the meditative atmosphere. Despite their age, the inscriptions, including those by Emperor Ashoka, remain well preserved. Visiting the Barabar Caves is like stepping into a piece of ancient history—raw, spiritual, and awe-inspiring. It's a must-visit for anyone interested in archaeology, history, or early Indian religious traditions.

Historical place, ancient man-made Marvel dating back around 250 BC. Explored by various scientists from around the world. Very nice for fun filled weekend trips felt like a time travel to the time it was built. oldest surviving rock-cut caves. The interiors are mirror-polished stone - it's hard to believe they're from the 3rd century BCE. A treat for archaeology buffs. The hike can be steep, so wear good shoes.

The Barabar Caves are a group of ancient rock-cut caves in Bihar, India, considered the oldest surviving rock-cut architecture in the country. Dating back to the 3rd century BCE Mauryan Empire, they were primarily carved for ascetics of the Ajivika sect and feature highly polished interiors and unique architectural styles, such as the distinctive Lomas Rishi Cave. The caves are located in the Barabar Hills near Makhdumpur, Jehanabad district, and are a significant historical and religious site.
NAZIR A — Google review
The Barabar Hill Caves are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, dating from the Maurya Empire (322–185 BCE), some with Ashokan inscriptions, located in the Makhdumpur region of Jehanabad district, Bihar, India, 24 km (15 mi) north of Gaya.[1 These caves are situated in the twin hills of Barabar (four caves) and Nagarjuni (three caves); caves of the 1.6 km (0.99 mi)-distant Nagarjuni Hill are sometimes singled out as the Nagarjuni Caves. These rock-cut chambers bear dedicatory inscriptions in the name of "King Piyadasi" for the Barabar group, and "Devanampiya Dasaratha" for the Nagarjuni group, thought to date back to the 3rd century BCE during the Maurya period, and to correspond respectively to Ashoka (reigned 273–232 BCE) and his grandson, Dasharatha Maurya The sculptured surround to the entrance to the Lomas Rishi Cave is the earliest survival of the ogee shaped "chaitya arch" or chandrashala that was to be an important feature of Indian rock-cut architecture and sculptural decoration for centuries. The form was a reproduction in stone of buildings in wood and other plant materials.[2][3] The caves were used by ascetics from the Ajivika sect,[2] founded by Makkhali Gosala, a contemporary of Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, and of Mahavira, the last and 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. The Ajivikas had many similarities with Buddhism as well as Jainism.[5] Also present at the site are several rock-cut Buddhist and Hindu sculptures and inscriptions from later periods.[1] Most caves at Barabar consist of two chambers, carved entirely out of granite, with a highly polished internal surface, the "Mauryan polish" also found on sculptures, and exciting echo effects.[3] The caves were featured – located in a fictitious Marabar – in the book A Passage to India by English author E. M. Forster.

Abhishek V — Google review
The Deo Surya Mandir in Aurangabad, Bihar is a fascinating place for several reasons: Solar Shrine: Unlike most Sun temples facing east, Deo Surya Mandir faces west, towards the setting sun. This unique orientation makes it a standout place for Sun worship. Historical Significance: The temple's exact origins are shrouded in mystery. Legends claim Lord Vishwakarma built it in one night, while evidence suggests its presence around the 7th or 8th century CE. Inscriptions point to renovations by King Bhairavendra in the 15th century. Chhath Puja Center: Deo Surya Mandir is one of the most sacred places for Chhath Puja celebrations in Bihar. A large pond surrounds the temple, adding to its beauty during the festival. However, unlike the wide-open spaces of the Ganges in Patna, reaching the temple by vehicle becomes difficult during Chhath due to the large crowds. Architectural Blend: The temple's architecture is a unique mix of Nagari, Dravidian, and Vesara styles. A dome with a gold urn placed on top adds to its grandeur. So, Deo Surya Mandir offers a place steeped in history, with a unique architectural style, and a central point for Chhath Puja celebrations, though with some access limitations during the festival

Review: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Visiting this ancient Hindu temple was a truly captivating experience. As one of the oldest temples, it holds a profound historical significance. The architectural marvel speaks volumes about the craftsmanship of its builders. The temple's resilience is commendable, having withstood the test of time, including a period of demolition during the Mughal era. Despite the challenges, the spirit and sacred aura of this place prevail, reminding us of the enduring cultural legacy. Exploring its sacred grounds transports you to a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the deep-rooted traditions and spirituality that have been cherished for centuries. A must-visit for history enthusiasts and those seeking a connection with India's rich cultural tapestry.

The Deo Sun temple of Aurangabad, Bihar, is located 14 km from the district headquarters. This temple is a solar shrine dedicated to the god Surya. It is popular across the country for its Chhath puja. The temple follows the traditional style of Nagara architecture. It is one of the few west-facing Sun temples. When we enter the temple premises we can see two huge Shivlangas and some unique shaped square stones craved like flowers below the giant bell. The sanctum santorum of the temple features idols of the lord Surya, Vishnu and Avalokiteshvara. The temple pavilion is now filled with colours hiding its actual beauty. If you want to see the real beauty of the entrance you can see this in the painting of Daniells and the photographs by Peppe. The main attraction of this temple is its main structure which is 100ft tall with beautifully carved Amalika and Kalash on the top. The stones used in the temple are the same used in the Umga temple. People believe that these two temples are built by the same person overnight. This is briefly explained by the historian and author Premendra Mishra in his book "The Mysterious Hills Umga" with logical facts about how temples were made overnight back then. According to Premendra Mishra, this temple is 200 to 600 years older than the temple of Umga. Still, there are many theories regarding the dating of this temple which is not cleared in any inscription found here. But according to local legends, the temple was built by King Aila 949126 years ago. But as we see the architecture of the temple which is of Nagara style is a maximum of 1400 years old. Historians believe that this temple was erected in the 6th-7th century by the Chandravanshi king.

Pind Daan Gaya

Mentioned on

Dharamshala
Sights & Landmarks
Pind Daan Gaya is a revered site located on the banks of the Falgu River, where Hindu pilgrims partake in ancestral rituals to honor their departed ancestors. It is believed that conducting Pind Daan at this sacred location ensures the salvation of their souls. The customary practices involve offering pindas (ritual cakes) to the ancestors while reciting prayers and hymns.
Gaya as we know happens to be the best place to conduct Hindu rituals for one's ancestors. We visited Gaya to perform annual shradh of my mother and performing pind-dan as posthumous ritual for departed soul of my parents and ancestors and on 10-11 Dec 2024. We spoke with Pandit Gautam Gayaav ji a month prior, in order to understand the types of rituals to be performed (as per our requirements) and the proper time to perform these rituals and accordingly, we booked a suitable date with him. We decided to stay for one night in Gaya and also perform all related poojas. We were given one of the designated rooms on the ground floor . The room was good, with a wide mattress and a bed for sleeping. The room was well-maintained with attached bathroom. After reaching Pandit ji’s place, he met us at our room and we discussed about the rituals which were to be conducted on the next day.Next day, we got up early and proceeded around 8 am by to a place dedicated for conducting rituals. The place has a lot of multiple structures constructed to conduct rituals and the tall trees and interspersed patches of grass, makes one feel that these rituals are being conducted in the midst of nature at the bank of river Falgu. The ritual went on for about 5 hours, we felt a sense of accomplishment paying obeisance to my parents and our ancestors. We were very thankful to Gautamji for all his efforts and for conducting the rituals to our satisfaction, and also for guiding us at key moments.

The infrastructure is poor. The pandas and pandits involved in the pooja are loots. Beware of the broker pandas..they are real loots..please do not book in advance. It is advisable to come one day advance and see all the arrangements urself if you're coming here for pooja of more than a day. Chose the right pandit after meeting in person. See all the staying arrangements urself before finalising anything. The pooja is divine but the people involved in it are completely business minded. Its all test of patience.

Overcrowded and far too noisy. Pind daan should ideally be performed in a serene and silent atmosphere, which this place lacks. Add to it countless interferences during the proceedings by money hungry pandas who will pester you for information about the place of residence of your forefathers.

Meditation center
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled near Bodhgaya in Bihar, India, the Root Institute for Wisdom Culture is a serene retreat offering basic accommodations and a range of courses on Tibetan Buddhism, meditation, and yoga. The institute's proximity to the Mahabodhi Stupa makes it an ideal place for contemplation and spiritual practice. Despite not participating in Buddhist courses, visitors found solace in the tranquil environment and appreciated the opportunity to meditate.
Very beautiful place! ✨ Meeting intellectuals and discussing different views on life is truly making a difference. I really appreciate it. 🙏

Root institute is a Tibetan Buddhist centre that offers a place to stay, retreat, study, and participate in buddhist courses. There are a great number of residence buildings on the property for accommodation. Accommodation types available include multi-bed dormitory, triple room, double room, single room with common washroom, or single room with private washroom. Three vegetarian meals are included that are served in the canteen at 7:30AM, 12PM, and 6:30PM. In February (high season), I booked a single room with a common washroom for 1000 rupees a night. If you stay a month or longer, you can apply a 25% discount. During the winter season, there are teachers and lamas who come in and either host a week course or give a dhamma teaching during the day. There are also several drop-in events/pujas scheduled here every so often. It appears that anyone is welcome to come and participate in these drop-ins, even some where traditionally I think people would need to have received some initiation first. It appears that isn't important here. Interesting to note that Root Institute's spiritual guide, Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche passed away in 2023, and since has been without any direct successor. In February it was a bit noisy here at night. This is because there are some venues neighboring areas that appear to host some big events and sometimes play loud music throughout the night. I recommend earplugs for sleeping. Bodhgaya is not specifically the best place to have a quiet environment for meditation though. It is more of a pilgrimage town. Even the lama who recently came to give a teaching here said he doesn't recommend Bodhgaya for finding peace and seclusion. That said, it is still fairly peaceful within the two gompas (tibetan temple) here for meditation during the day.

After a flight from Vancouver, Canada, with several days in Delhi and then several more days in Varanasi, a long train ride to Gaya and a 3am tuk tuk ride to Bodhgaya…. I definitely needed some peace and quiet from the last 10 days and this is exactly whaat I received from my stay at Root Institute. Even though I did not take part in any Buddhist courses i felt welcomed. My room was a perfect. I found the time and place to practice my meditation and to calm my mind. The food was great. My stay allowed me time to visit friends get some dental work completed in Gaya and some much needed Ayurvedic care less than a 5 minute walk from my cabin. When I left after 12 days i was totally relaxed and ready to take on the rest of my vacation in India before heading come. I will definitely return to this wonderful center and its wonderful staff again.

The best place to be for self reflection and also self imposed retreat. Their canteen has been a saviour with regular timing to eat. You can focus on your cultivation without stressing on what to eat. It's peaceful and the rooms are basic but sufficient. The gompas are great for meditation and chanting. Bodhgaya Bodhi Tree is a significant site for Buddhists, believed to be a descendant of the original tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. The area has been important to Buddhists since the formation of the Buddhist community. The current Bodhi tree outside the Mahabodhi temple is not the original, but a direct descendant. It has been replaced many times and is adorned with marigold flower strings during religious ceremonies.
I have just returned from a 12 day tour of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. I am extremely grateful to have Fen from BODHITREE INDIA TRAVELS for planning, preparing and customising our itinerary and making it the best one possible. We were a group of 4 Family members travelling together. We travelled from Cochin-Munnar-Madurai-Periyar-Allepey- Cochin. We arrived in Cochin not knowing what to expect, but was overwhelmed and surprised by the excellent choice of hotels selected for us by Fen. On arrival in Cochin, we received a warm welcome from Fen, even though it was very early in the morning and he stayed in contact with me throughout our stay there, ensuring our well being and comfort. A very special and heartfelt thanks goes out to our Driver Sajan. He really made our long journeys easy and comfortable with his smooth and safe driving. he was very cooperative in heeding to our needs and very knowledgeable about the local sightseeing and markets. he was professional and helpful to us all the way. Sajan became our translator, photographer and a friend all rolled into one and we were very sad to say goodbye to him on the last day.

**"A Sacred and Transformative Experience at the Bodhi Tree"** The Bodhi Tree in Bodh Gaya is an extraordinary place of spiritual significance and tranquility. Standing under the very tree where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience. The atmosphere around the tree is serene, with devotees from around the world meditating, chanting, and offering prayers. The Maha Bodhi Temple nearby adds to the sanctity of the site. The energy of the place is truly special, and it’s a must-visit for anyone seeking peace, spirituality, or a deeper connection with history and culture. Spending time here felt like a moment of true reflection and inner calm.

The temple complex, dating back to the 3rd Century BC, is a major attraction for Buddhist pilgrims and tourists alike. The present Mahabodhi Tree is a descendant of the original tree taken to Sri Lanka in the 3rd Century BC.
Visiting the Mahabodhi Temple was one of the most amazing spiritual experiences of my life. The moment you enter the temple premises, you feel a deep sense of peace and positivity. The security here is extremely alert and well-organized, which gives a lot of comfort to visitors and allows you to focus completely on the spiritual experience rather than worrying about safety. The temple itself is breathtaking. The main structure is so beautifully designed that it reminded me of the traditional temples of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, grand, detailed, and full of intricate carvings. Inside, the statue of Lord Buddha is truly mesmerizing, sitting there for a while brings an indescribable sense of calm. One of the best things here is that there is hardly any crowd most of the time. You can visit the temple peacefully without the rush and chaos you usually find in other tourist places. With fewer people around, it feels more personal, quiet, and truly meditative. Another favorite part was the serene pond at the back of the temple. It’s so peaceful and perfect for quiet reflection. Walking around the complex, seeing monks from different countries meditating under the sacred Bodhi Tree, was a surreal experience, it felt like I was in a place beyond this world, like heaven itself.

“The place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment at a very young age beneath a Sacred Fig tree is truly remarkable. I fully recommend all tourists to visit this place with their children so that they can learn about Buddha’s life. When you see it with your own eyes, the experience is far more powerful than just reading about it in history books or religious stories.” There is also a conservative type transport service that is called "tam tam " in local language but they charged farely . It is fully free service and there is place where you can keep your phone in safe locker for free .

Mahabodhi Temple – A Spiritual Journey to Enlightenment Visiting the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya is like stepping into the heart of Buddhist history. As soon as you approach the temple complex, the serenity of the place envelops you. The main stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stands majestically at the center, radiating peace and spiritual energy. The temple is surrounded by lush gardens and pathways that are perfect for quiet reflection. Pilgrims from all over the world visit here to meditate, chant, and pay homage to the sacred Bodhi Tree, under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. The atmosphere is calm yet profoundly moving, giving visitors a sense of inner peace. Inside the temple, intricate carvings and sculptures depict the life of Buddha, offering a glimpse into ancient artistry and devotion. Photography is restricted in some areas, which preserves the sanctity of the place. The temple complex also houses several smaller shrines and meditation spots, making it ideal for both spiritual seekers and history enthusiasts. Visiting hours are convenient, and the temple is well-maintained, with facilities like rest areas and guides available for a deeper understanding of its history. Whether you are a devotee, a tourist, or someone seeking peace, Mahabodhi Temple promises a memorable and soul-refreshing experience. Tip: Arrive early in the morning to witness the morning prayers and enjoy the calm before the crowd arrives.

A visit to the Mahabodhi Temple is a serene, spiritual, and awe-inspiring experience, even with the crowds. Visitors describe the atmosphere as soulful and uplifting, with many people spending time meditating near the Bodhi tree or around the temple complex. It's best to go in the evening for the best lighting, and it is a place for quiet contemplation despite the surrounding hustle and bustle of the town.

Wat Thai is the Thailand-built temple of Bodhgaya, and is extremely beautiful and serene. When we visited, some renovation work was going on so we were deprived of the glimpses of the actual Thai architecture based on which the temple is built.

I recently visited Wat Thai Buddhagaya, a beautiful temple reflecting Thai culture through its intricate architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Nestled close to the Great Buddha Statue, the temple offers a calm space for meditation, but when I visited, there was ongoing construction work, which slightly affected the ambiance. Despite this, the charm of the golden Buddha statue inside the main hall and the serene gardens still made it a worthwhile experience. The temple operates from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM daily, and entry is free.

Indosan Nipponji Temple, established in 1963, is a Japanese Buddhist temple located in Bodh Gaya. The temple was built to promote and spread Buddhism in India and features pagoda-like architecture that reflects Japanese culture and tradition. The wooden structure resembles a typical Japanese shrine and houses various Japanese-style paintings depicting significant events from the life of Buddha. Additionally, the temple includes an idol of Lord Buddha worshipped by monks and devotees daily.

Visiting Indosan Nipponji was a peaceful and beautiful experience. The temple’s architecture is colorful and unique, reflecting a mix of Japanese and Buddhist influences. The surroundings are calm, making it a perfect place to relax and reflect. One important thing that stood out was the lack of proper wheelchair accessibility, which I hope will improve in the future.
Drabir K — Google review
A serene and quite temple, the decor of which provides a archetypical example of Japanese temple construction (at least as I understand it). Please note that as of February 2023 the daily chanting and meditation sits are no longer happening, which is unsurprising in this late/post-pandemic period. Nonetheless, it seems that you are still free to come and do your own meditation sits if you want. It showcases Japanese paintings that depict important events of Buddha's life. Peaceful atmosphere and well-maintained.

Located very near to giant Buddha statue. It's excellent piece of architecture. As like other monastery this is also very colourful , photography is only allowed in premises but not allowed in temple. Excellent paintings, nice premises, very interesting stupas in premises. Please note that almost all temples in Bodh gaya are closed between 12 noon to 2 pm. Plan your visit accordingly

Very peaceful indeed. It has a chanting hall with Buddha statue. The Chanting happens in morning (5 to 6 in summer and 6 to 7 am in winter ) and evening for an hour ( 5 to 6 pm ) . This place also has school for kids, hospital as well. They do have special annual puja !!. It has a lot of painting inside the temple . There are cushions available in case you want to meditate.

One of the best temples of Bodh Gaya built by wood. Its made according to Japanese architecture .
PARTHA B — Google review
The road is rather dusty as it seems there’s some construction going on. Although same can be said for most of Bodhgaya. The temple holds true to its Japanese architecture. However, it’s not as well maintained as the Bhutanese temple nearby. There’s a large stupa and bell as well as a small playground. The playground is meant for the kindergarteners schooling in the compound.

Inaugurated in 1989, the 25-meter-tall Buddha statue located near the Mahabohdi Temple is a major attraction for Buddhist pilgrims. The statue depicts Buddha seated in dhyana mudra on a lotus and is flanked by ten statues of his great disciples. Erected outdoors, this awe-inspiring statue stands at an impressive height of 19.5 meters and was complemented by the installation of ten additional standing statues in 1996.
Visiting The Great Buddha Statue in Gaya was truly impressive. The massive statue stands peacefully in the middle of a green and calm environment, giving a deep sense of peace and spirituality. The place is well-maintained and perfect for photography or just relaxing in a quiet atmosphere. Unlike many tourist spots, it was not overcrowded when I visited, so I could easily enjoy the whole area without much disturbance. The pathways are good, but some parts could be improved for better accessibility, especially for wheelchairs. This site is definitely a must-visit when traveling to Gaya.

Powerful Icon of Peace & Spirituality..! I visited the Great Buddha Statue in Bodh Gaya, and it truly lives up to its reputation. Standing about 25 meters (≈80 ft) tall, it shows the Buddha in meditation pose (Dhyana Mudra) seated on a lotus. The construction uses red granite and sandstone, and the craftsmanship is impressive…!

Towering over the sacred landscape where Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment, it reflects the enduring legacy of Buddhist architecture and devotion. Crafted from sandstone and red granite, the statue’s serene expression captures the essence of calm reflection central to the Buddha’s teachings. Morning sunlight accentuates its fine detailing, highlighting the craftsmanship of those who built it as a symbol of peace and learning. Visiting this monument is not merely a visual experience, but a journey through history — to the heart of one of the world’s cultural and philosophical traditions.

*5.0 out of 5 stars* A Spiritual Oasis in Bodh Gaya I'm still under the spell of the Great Buddha Statue in Bodh Gaya! This magnificent 80-foot-tall statue is a must-visit for anyone seeking peace and enlightenment. The serene atmosphere, the intricate carvings, and the stunning architecture will leave you breathless. The statue, made of red granite and sandstone, depicts Lord Buddha in a meditative pose, surrounded by 10 smaller statues of his disciples. The attention to detail is remarkable, and the peaceful ambiance is palpable. I was impressed by the statue's sheer size and grandeur. The hollow interior contains 20,000 bronze Buddha images, and the spiral staircase leading to the chest offers a unique perspective. *Tips for Visitors:* - Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. - Take time to appreciate the intricate carvings and architecture. - Don't miss the 10 smaller statues of Buddha's disciples. *Highly Recommended:* If you're in Bodh Gaya, don't miss the Great Buddha Statue. It's a spiritual oasis that will leave you feeling peaceful and inspired.

The Buddha Smriti Museum (Buddha Smriti Park) in Patna is one of the most peaceful and spiritually enriching places in Bihar. Built in memory of Lord Buddha, this museum and park beautifully capture the essence of Buddhism and its deep connection with Bihar — the land where Buddha attained enlightenment. Located right in the heart of the city near Patna Junction, it’s easy to reach and offers a calm retreat from the busy streets outside. The centerpiece of the park is the magnificent Pataliputra Karuna Stupa, which houses sacred relics of Lord Buddha brought from different Buddhist countries. The architecture is stunning — modern yet deeply symbolic, with clean lines and a serene ambiance that invites silence and reflection. Inside, the museum features fascinating exhibits, sculptures, and interactive displays that depict Buddha’s life journey and teachings. The audio-visual presentations are very informative and make the experience even more engaging. The place is immaculately maintained, with beautiful gardens, meditation halls, and pathways lined with greenery. The atmosphere feels truly divine, especially in the evening when the entire complex lights up softly, creating a magical and meditative environment. If you’re visiting Patna, this is a must-see destination — not just for Buddhists but for anyone seeking peace, knowledge, or inspiration. The Buddha Smriti Museum perfectly blends spirituality, history, and modern design, making it one of the finest attractions in the city. 🌸🕊️

Standing approximately 80 feet tall, this magnificent figure is one of the largest Buddha statues in India, depicting the Lord in a profound meditation pose (Dhyana Mudra). Constructed from a beautiful mix of sandstone and red granite, the statue exudes a powerful sense of peace and serenity. It is located in a well-maintained garden near the Daijokyo Buddhist Temple, providing a calm and meditative environment that perfectly complements the surrounding pilgrimage sites of Bodh Gaya. A perfect place for someone who loves nature quietness & calm places. It’s a lush green forest area spread across 186 kms. You won’t find animals, but people have spotted tiger there. Visited recently and had a peaceful experience at Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary. The forest is serene and well-maintained, with good road connectivity inside the sanctuary for safaris. Spotted deer, monkeys, and a variety of birds during the visit. The watchtowers near water sources offer great views of the natural surroundings. Facilities like the forest guest house and canteen are basic but helpful. While sightings of large animals like tigers or leopards are rare, it's still a nice place for nature lovers and birdwatchers. Staff was cooperative and entry was smooth. Best time to visit is during winter months.

I request the government to please maintain the sanctuary as all the animals have become extinct. They are only engaged in eating money. As a place to stroll, it is very good. But there is probably no big wild animals there. It was open even in monsoon (as monsoon being mating season, all proper national parks or wildlife sanctuaries remain closed). They allow two-wheelers as well. You can stop anywhere and get into the woods. No one is going to stop you. Overall, good for refreshing nature but not as wildlife sanctuary.

A peaceful escape in Hazaribagh Jheel offers calm waters, scenic views, and a refreshing break from the city buzz. Quiet, layered, and perfect for a slow, reflective visit.
Zeya — Google review
Hazaribagh Jheel, or Hazaribagh Lake, is a collection of man-made lakes right in the center of Hazaribagh town in Jharkhand. Built by the British back in 1831 while they were constructing the central jail, these lakes were created from big craters left after clay extraction. The lake system has seven sections, each at varying heights, which lets water flow from one lake to another through spill channels. This impressive piece of engineering not only helps with water conservation but also creates a beautiful spot for both locals and visitors. Hazaribagh Jheel is a favorite picnic destination and offers boating options. The third lake, the largest of the bunch, is the perfect place to catch stunning sunrises and sunsets.

It houses extraordinary collection of the Pre-historic stone tools and tribal arts discovered and collected by Padmashri Bulu Imam who is a prominent Archeologist, environmentalist, Gandhian, Scholar, Author, Discoverer and Social activist. Mr Imam and his family have contributed immensely to make this place extraordinary. Mr Gustav Imam is a curator trained in Oxford and Australia and is contributing with his exemplary skils. I Strongly recommend everyone visiting Jharkhand to spend time here and get enriched and enlightened.

Patratu Valley is a renowned destination that features a curvy and picturesque road with street food stalls, leading to boat rides at a dam. This place offers breathtaking views of nature's beauty, making it perfect for long drives and photography enthusiasts. It is an ideal location for couples searching for an extended romantic drive or anyone looking to relax in a serene natural environment with crystal clear waters.
The Jewel of Jharkhand Patratu Valley is arguably one of the most breathtaking hidden gems in eastern India, often earning the moniker "The Switzerland of Jharkhand" for its pristine beauty. Located just a short drive from Ranchi, the valley offers a visual treat that rivals popular hill stations. The most striking feature of Patratu is undoubtedly its winding ghat road. The exhilarating drive through the lush green hills features a series of perfectly paved S-curves and hairpin bends that look like an engineering marvel from the viewpoints above. For bikers and driving enthusiasts, navigating these curves while surrounded by dense Sal forests is a thrilling experience. At the valley's basin lies the expansive Patratu Dam. The shimmering blue waters of the reservoir provide a stark, beautiful contrast to the emerald hills. It is a serene spot perfect for boating or simply sitting by the banks to watch the sunset reflection on the water. Whether visiting during the misty monsoon when the clouds descend onto the road, or during the clear winters, Patratu provides a perfect escape from urban chaos. It is a must-visit destination that perfectly blends adventure, nature, and tranquility.

This place is perfect for a day trip. The beautiful, wide, and winding roads through the valley make for a scenic drive. From the viewpoint, you'll have a stunning panoramic view of the entire city. While you can only appreciate the winding, snakelike roads from a drone's perspective, the viewpoint itself is great for taking pictures and grabbing a bite to eat. After descending into the valley, you'll find a peaceful lake. It's definitely a spot worth visiting.

Patratu Valley is located about 40 km from Ranchi and can be easily reached by road or rail. The nearest railway station is Patratu Junction, which is connected to Ranchi and other major cities by regular trains. You can also take a bus or a taxi from Ranchi to Patratu Valley, which will take you about an hour. The road journey is scenic and enjoyable, as you will pass through winding roads, verdant forests, and charming villages. The best time to visit Patratu Valley is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant and the valley is at its greenest. You can also visit during the monsoon season, when the lake and the dam are full of water and create a spectacular sight.

Patratu Valley offers one of the most mesmerizing views you can experience in Jharkhand. The winding roads surrounded by lush green hills create a breathtaking sight, especially during cloudy weather when the mist gently rolls over the valley. The blend of clouds, mountains, and the serene lake below makes the place look straight out of a postcard. It’s an ideal spot for nature lovers and photographers who enjoy scenic drives and peaceful landscapes. A visit to Patratu Valley truly rejuvenates the soul and leaves you in awe of nature’s beauty.

Must visit place near Ranchi, but not plan to visit in summer. Morning and evening time is best for viewing the scenic beauty of Pataratu Valley. It’s amazing. Your trip to Ranchi have to include it. You can easily get some snacks and Puchkas here. If you’re going with your friends you can plan for a short hike.

Riding through Patratu Valley felt like gliding through a dream carved out of mountains. The winding roads, wrapped in layers of green hills and misty air, make it one of the most breathtaking biking routes in Jharkhand. I crossed the valley during my ride from Asansol to Ranchi, and every curve demanded a photo stop. The road is beautifully maintained, with smooth bends and guard rails that make it safe yet thrilling. You’ll often find local bikers and travellers halting at viewpoints, just soaking in the silence and the cool breeze. From the top, the aerial view of Patratu Dam is simply stunning — especially during sunrise or just after rain when the valley wears a glossy green coat. The sound of the wind echoing through the hills makes you feel truly alive. If you love road trips, this place is more than just a stop — it’s an experience. 🌄🏍️✨ Tips: – Ride early morning or evening for perfect weather and views – Carry water; limited shops along the valley stretch – Drone shots and panoramic photos here look straight out of a travel magazine

Maa Chhinnamastika Mandir

Mentioned on

Hindu temple
Sights & Landmarks

The Maa Chhinmastike mandir is a stunning Hindu temple located on a hilltop, dedicated to a headless goddess. The vibrant Tantric-style design adds to the beauty of the serene surroundings which are surrounded by mountains and forests. Though there is a small market in the vicinity, queue management needs improvement, and more police personnel are required due to long waiting times that can last up to 3-4 hours.
This temple in ramgarh, hazaribagh is considered a holy & divine place to the Hindus all over India.main temple is a colourful structure.vairabhi river is passing by the temple ..but crowd maintance is very poor inside the temple. people r pussing one another & create nuisance inside the main temple, difficult to visit with elderly & kids ...goats are carried for sacrifice & no different entrance for men & goats... people have to stand in ques for long but can't offer puja peacefully ..but as it is one of the saktipeeth among 51 in India it is considered very sacred place. It is said to be over 6000 years old and still attracts thousands of visitors every day. A site of both religious and historical importance, this temple attracts pilgrims and devotees from all over India and abroad. There are also several Hindu festivals celebrated at the temple. The deity to whom the temple is dedicated, Maa Chinmastikey, one of the Mahavidya Goddesses, is highly revered in Hindu culture, especially in North India. She is most often depicted as being severed by the head, holding her decapitated head in her hand; and the blood spurting out of her neck being drunk by her head and two attendants. This ferocious and gory image symbolizes what she stands for— a life-giver as well as a life taker. She represents life as well as death, at the same time. She also represents sexual self-control, the frailty of life itself as well as several topics that would be easily considered taboo in modern culture. She is known for herself sacrificing nature, and her destructive fury, as is expected of a goddess of the Shakti. Prayer to this Hindu goddess is believed to protect the worshipper from “instance of misfortune, difficulty and misguided mind”. Apart from the religious significance, the Rajrappa Mandir is also a place for vehicle poojas, marriages and any number of ritualistic traditions that require the blessing of the goddess. In Hindu culture, it is a practice for children to be shaved bald before the age of two; this practice is called the mundan and most families choose to do their children’s mundan at a temple. The Rajrappa Mandir happens to be an important site for the mundan, with hundreds of young children getting their heads shaved in this temple. Everyone should visit this temple ❤️❤️❤️❤️.

This place is located in a remote area of jharkhand, beside the Damodar river. Scenery of this place is attractive and one must visit in the winter to fully enjoy the nature. A very good place for Spirituality inclined person. To visit the temple you have to wait in the queue for 10 to 15 minutes depending upon the crowd. But sorry to say that accommodation facility is poor. You need to come back after offering Puja.

Chhinnamastika mandir is a temple dedicated to Goddess Chinnamastika. This is an important Hindu pilgrimage centre for people from Jharkhand, Bihar and Bengal. Located in Rajrappa, the temple is easily accessible by road from Ranchi. The temple follows tantrik practices and the Goddess is associated with blood. Live goats are beheaded here daily as sacrifice. The temple is very popular and it may take more than an hour in queue for darshan - so prepare accordingly. I read somewhere that this temple is over 6000 years old!

Here The Goddes Kali is worshipped as Devi Chinamastika. 📌It attracts a lot of people from Bihar, West Bengal, and neighboring States. It's worth a visit.there is an amazing peace around the temple😇. there are myths which make this temple more mysterious and strange.☢️ Sensitive people need to close their eyes while entering the main temple as the sight of blood on the flooring might disturb them☢️. The kids need to be handled carefully as this place remains crowded throughout the year.❣️
Saptarshi C — Google review
Beautiful place for both the spiritual tourists and the nature lovers. The nature lovers might be a bit irritated in the market area in close proximity of the temple , because that area is a bit chaotic , lots of shops selling puja items , ful of dirt and mud ... But once you cross that area you will get the view of the confluence of Damodar and Bhairavi river which is locally known as Bhera river. One can avail the boat ride which goes very close to the confluence .
Sumit I — Google review
The place has improved a lot. There's a restaurant now which serves excellent food with a varied menu and excellent service. A well- maintained rose garden and lawn is also a good place to spend some time. The boating experience is awesome. Small shops selling knick knacks, snacks, and items used for worshipping the Hindu gods are all over. If you want to avoid the crowds, choose to be there in the afternoon.. the peace of the campus would refresh the soul.

Most beautiful place and picnic spot📍

Garga Dam, located 12 km away from Bokaro Steel City, Jharkhand, is one of the most famous engineered marvels of the region. Apart from acting as a water supplier to Bokaro Steel Plant and residential areas of the region, the dam is also a popular sightseeing attraction amongst locals and tourists. Surrounded by thick green forest cover and river body, the dam gives a perfect setting for day trips and family picnics. Garga Dam is also preferred by many as sunset and sunrise watching points. Garga is a tributary of the Damodar River that flows on the southern parts of the city of Bokaro. A dam was constructed on it in the 1950s to make it the first such river valley project in the country. The power generated from the dam and the water is used for industrial and civilian purposes of Bokaro. But, its appeal lies in its picturesque setting with greenery all around and the wonderful river which makes it quite a picnic spot for the picnic loving Bokaro populace.

Bhagwan Birsa Biological Park, located in the heart of Ranchi, Jharkhand, is a sprawling 104-hectare zoo that beautifully integrates wildlife with its natural forested terrain. This park stands out as one of India's most popular zoos due to its stunning landscapes and diverse animal inhabitants. The gentle undulations of the land combined with lush greenery and ample water sources create an ideal habitat for various species to thrive comfortably.
It was a good experience with my kid and family. The walk was quite long nonetheless. This is mostly because we missed to hire a buggy at the entrance (highly recommended if you are with kids and elderly). The park is very neat and clean other than the usual animal smell nothing else. Considering the weather and heat, we felt The Black Bear was more welcoming than others 🤫😬. I know that my kid enjoyed the walk in the zoo. The timing to visit I felt like entry by 10:15/10:30 and exit by 01:00/01:30 PM to be ideal with kids and elderly. Carry water and small snacks but make sure to use dustbins when done. Variety of birds, animals and reptiles are in the zoo. Overall I will say a good experience.

One of the gems of Ranchi. Situated at NH on Ranchi Patna Road. It’s also called the Ormanjhi Zoo. Has ample Parking space. We booked the tickets online, can be purchased on counter too. I preferred this to avoid the queue however there wasn’t any rush as such. Inside you get battery operated cars which can be booked at 300/-. There is waiting always for the same. Keep half an hour as wait period for this. In terms of animals and condition of the park - it’s really well kept and maintained. Very good experience for kids and adults too. There is a snake world inside, don’t miss that.. :)

The visit was not of good taste.we 4 Adults and 2 children aged 4 & 2 years reached at 3=30 PM. The moment we reached at the entrance Gate,A loud sound frightened us Which was due to fall of DRY BRANCH of Tall Dry Tree standing just near the First Turn of the Entrance Gate.By GOD Grace We escaped unhurt for few inches. The intensity of impact can be gauged by the bend Corrugated sheet nearby . We made an Entry and went straight for hiring vehicle at around 3=35 PM Where we got another as No vehicle was available.Enquiry revealed that only 3 small vehicles are plying and rest are under Breakdown including the Big one.We somehow managed to walk a little with 2 small children and left disappointed.

Atleast you should visit once in your life.

Been here dozens of time and yesterday went with people from my hometown. Everyone had the best time. Boating for some reason wasn't available this time. But white tiger is the latest feature of this place. Must visit if you're coming to Ranchi. And yes do come in light clothing. You will have to walk a lot, 5-6 kms easily, although a golf cart sevice is also there but I don't recommend it. Don't be lazy while you're out to enjoy :)

Visited Kanke Dam during my bike ride through Ranchi, and it instantly became one of those peaceful places you remember long after leaving. The calm water reflecting the orange evening sky, the distant hum of the city fading away — it’s where Ranchi feels truly alive yet completely still. The road leading to the dam is smooth and scenic, with small local tea stalls along the way. I crashed at my friend’s place just beside kanke dam and just watched the sunset paint everything gold. The crowd is mixed — couples, locals on evening walks, and travellers looking for quiet corners. What makes Kanke Dam special is its simplicity — no flashy decorations, just raw, natural beauty. You’ll often see ducks gliding across the water and kids cycling near the edge. It’s a great spot for photography, calm reflection, or just unwinding after a long day. Tips: – Best time: Early morning or evening for soft light and cool breeze – Carry snacks if you plan to sit longer; limited stalls nearby – Respect the silence — it’s part of the charm 🌤️

Nestled amidst the verdant embrace of Ranchi's countryside, Kanke Dam emerges as a serene sanctuary, beckoning travelers to bask in the tranquil ambiance of its scenic splendor. Enveloped by lush foliage and cradled by rolling hills, the dam's expansive reservoir mirrors the ethereal hues of the azure sky, creating a mesmerizing tableau that enchants the senses. Here, amidst the symphony of nature, visitors find solace in the gentle lapping of water against the dam's shores and the rustle of leaves in the breeze. Boating enthusiasts can embark on leisurely voyages across the placid waters, while leisure seekers find sanctuary upon the dam's banks, where sprawling lawns invite languid picnics and contemplative strolls. However, despite its natural allure, Kanke Dam grapples with the challenge of inadequate facilities, including limited seating and restroom amenities, which may detract from the overall visitor experience. Moreover, the absence of diversified recreational offerings might leave some yearning for more engagement opportunities. Nonetheless, Kanke Dam stands as an emblem of tranquility and natural grandeur, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in the timeless charm of Ranchi's hinterland.

The hill is home to the Shiva Temple and is associated with revered pilgrimage during Shravanmas.

It's a nice place with majestic spiritual essence. Located at a distance of 4.5-5kms from Ranchi Railway Station. A Temple of Lord Shiva at the top of the Hill, also known as Pahari Baba. There are several steps to reach to the top. It's easy for young ones but tough for the elder peoples to go there. You can have a scenic view of the Town Ranchi from the top of the hill. Please do visit.

Pahari Mandir offers a meaningful blend of spiritual reverence, historical importance, and scenic beauty. The ascent might be challenging for some, but the view—and the atmosphere—make it worth the effort. Just be aware of limited amenities at the top and consider visiting off-peak hours for a more relaxed experience.

Witnessed this waterfall in full glory but due to that not able to get into the pool for a dip as currents were too strong. It closes by 5PM and the ticket counter closes by 4PM

It’s really beautiful although we were here on a gloomy day but the water flow was intense. The fall is quite heightened. And there is a small track you have to do till the waterfall i.e around 1 km downslope stairs. The waterfall is very beautiful and the crowd is decent make sure you return back to ranchi the same day as there is no hotels nearby for staying.

Visited Hundru Falls recently, and it was an absolutely breathtaking experience! 🌊✨ The waterfall is truly majestic, surrounded by lush greenery and scenic beauty that makes it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers. The sound of the falling water and the cool breeze create such a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere. The place is well worth the visit, especially during or just after the monsoon when the flow is at its best. However, visitors should be cautious while walking near the rocks as they can be slippery. A little improvement in cleanliness and basic facilities around the area would make the experience even better. Overall, it was a wonderful and memorable trip — a perfect escape into nature’s beauty! 🌿💦

Perfect place, only checked the upper side, no entrance fee there. Go weekdays before lunch to avoid crowds. Protect the environment, dont litter!

It's a nice place to visit. Whether you're a photographer seeking drama, a traveler craving solitude, or a storyteller like you looking to pair visuals with emotion, Hundru delivers. The sound of the water crashing, the cool spray on your face, and the sheer scale of the drop—it’s humbling, exhilarating, and oddly comforting all at once. Visit during or just after the monsoon for peak flow, but tread carefully—the rocks get slippery and the current fierce. Early morning light adds a golden glow that’s perfect for nostalgic edits or pairing with a soulful track.

Jagannath Mandir

Hindu temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Shree Jagannath Temple, located about 10 km from the main city of Ranchi, is a 17th-century shrine that bears a striking resemblance to the famous temple in Puri. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and houses statues of many other deities. The temple's antique and traditional architecture is well-maintained, offering visitors a spectacular view of the mesmerizing city of Ranchi.
Nestled on the serene hilltop of Ranchi’s Dhurwa region, the iconic Jagannath Mandir is a spiritual symphony echoing the grandeur of its Puri namesake — but with a smaller crowd, cooler breeze, and a charming rustic vibe that feels both ancient and intimate. Not Just a Temple—It’s a Legacy in Laterite Built in 1691 by the king of Barkagarh, Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, this temple is older than many of India’s railway stations and certainly more peaceful. The architectural style bears a close resemblance to the iconic Jagannath Temple of Puri, but it's crafted in the local laterite stone and has a distinctly tribal influence that gives it a character all its own. Here's the kicker: the temple was partially destroyed due to aging and structural decay, but thanks to public devotion and ASI-supported renovations, it's now standing tall like a phoenix in sandstone robes. When Tradition Takes the Hill — Literally Every year during the Rath Yatra, the temple transforms into a cultural carnival, drawing thousands who brave the hilltop climb with the zeal of true pilgrims and the cardio strength of seasoned trekkers. The idols of Lords Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Lady Subhadra are paraded in a vibrant chariot procession — think spiritual parade meets community reunion. Fascinating Tidbits: - The climb to the temple involves about 200+ steps, and if you're lucky, the setting sun will reward your effort with a panoramic Ranchi skyline dipped in gold. - Despite being lesser-known nationally, this temple is immensely significant to the tribal communities of Jharkhand, blending Vedic rituals with local customs. - According to local lore, some of the stones used in its reconstruction were brought from Odisha, maintaining a spiritual umbilical cord with Puri. A Reflective Wrap-Up: If faith had a postcode in Jharkhand, it would be the Jagannath Mandir, Dhurwa. It’s sacred without the chaos, spiritual without the sermon, and historic without the ego. Go for the peace, stay for the view, and come back for the Rath Yatra!

Made on top of a small hill in dhurwa region, it is a replica of the main temple of odisha. The legacy it holds of standing strong since 17th century makes it incredible.

The temple is situated at a beautiful and elevated location, offering a serene atmosphere that helps you disconnect from the noise of daily life. The architecture of the temple resembles the famous Jagannath Temple in Puri, and it’s both spiritual and visually captivating. The surroundings are clean, well-maintained, and ideal for families and devotees. Whether you’re visiting for prayers or just looking to spend some quiet, reflective time, this temple provides a calming experience. Jagannath Temple Ranchi, Jharkhand 💞 The Jagannath Temple, located in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, is a major religious site. This temple, dedicated to Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra, was established in the mid-20th century. 💞 Built in the Odisha style, this temple offers a glimpse of the Puri Jagannath Temple in Ranchi. Wooden idols of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Paintings and carvings in Rajasthani and Odisha styles can be seen on the walls. 💞 The main tower and wide courtyard are built on the highest peak of the temple. 💞 The temple complex houses small umbrellas and pillars, along with shrines to other deities, which convey a sense of historical and religious significance. 💞 The temple's color scheme is predominantly white and pink, making it even more attractive. 💞 Famous for the Jagannath Rath Yatra, this temple also celebrates festivals like Janmashtami, Ramnavami, and Ramanavami, in addition to the Rath Yatra. Special pujas and ceremonies are held during major Hindu festivals like Diwali. A dining hall and restrooms are available within the temple complex for devotees to enjoy the feast and distribute prasad. Parking is also available around the temple. ✅ Thank you 🙏
