A beautiful beach. Moray Firth views. Great for the kids, walking, dog walking, reading a book or just relaxing. At various points there are opportunities to come off for cold or warm refreshments and a bite to eat at the many first class establishments around Nairn. There’s also a playground and a couple of really nice places for ice cream around the links (which has a car park too). Watch out for the crabs and jellyfish!

it's just simply beautiful! There were alot of people there, but you could still find a bench to sit and watch the day go by

This beach is simply spectacular, came here on the clearest of clear days. And I wish I could've stayed all day. It goes on for miles, & it's such a peaceful outstanding place to be. Plenty of nice cafes around, & Parkdean resort isn't too far away from here if you want to grab something to eat from one of their local restaurants.

Fantastic beaches with harbour and restaurants. Seafood bar. Large play area for thr kids.

I found one small and lovely place. From centre town is easy to arrive in large parking area with open space for play ⚽ or relax. Also beautifully landscaped walking trails connect with the riverside trail.

Beautiful beach just a few minutes walk from our b&b. Lots of different pathway options and little shelters for passing rain. Bring your shell jacket; always a stiff wind and chance of precipitation.

Cawdor Castle, a 14th-century fortress that is linked to Shakespeare's Macbeth as the Thane of Cawdor, boasts a drawbridge, tapestries and beautiful gardens. The castle offers an informative tour with an audio option and visitors can enjoy coffee, cakes and a playground on site. The grounds are stunning with fragrant lavender and ample parking available. Inside the castle is equally impressive with plenty to explore.
Really enjoy our visit to this castle. The gardens were absolute gorgeous, full of beautiful blooming flowers. Children will definitely enjoy the little play park, a short walk from the gardens Castle was full of interesting information and plenty to see and do. Slight wait to get on but we arrived on a very busy day We enjoyed some delicious soup and bread from the cafe. Lovely place and will definitely be back😁
Ezri N — Google review
Enjoyed this place. It is gloriously understated, especially when compared to other stately homes (and occupied castles) and yet remained regal, pleasant and interesting to visit. There were no vulgar displays of excessive wealth found in so many. Audio guide was good. Garden wasn't in the prime largely due to my arrival in the later part of September.
Chris N — Google review
very impressive castle and gardens ..definitely a must see when visiting inverness...This fortification founded by William the Lion in 1179 was sited to command the ford over the river Nairn near the sea. That castle has since vanished without trace. The family had another residence at Old Calder which, according to the Exchequer accounts, was last repaired in 1398. Again, not much remains of that building apart from faint crop-marks. A new, more efficient site was chosen. The imposing, rectangular tower-house consisted of four storeys and a garret with only one entrance to the outside world. Repaired and enlarged every century since, the Castle as you see it today is a family home like no other
Warren B — Google review
Really well organised castle and gardens. This is a real castle where the owners live in for the good part of the year and you can feel it. Modern "tour guide" technology in different languages is another advantage. Much better experience than the average medieval castle.
Stefan S — Google review
Lovely Castle to walk around with lots of interesting history. We spent around 2 hours there and also had some lunch at the cafe which had delicious apple juice made from the apples in their orchard and a selection of vegan cakes. Super friendly staff who were happy to answer all questions. Gardens were beautiful!
Poppy G — Google review
Excellent visitor attraction and a great day out. The castle is well preserved and still occupied by the descendants of the original Thane of Cawdor. Rich in history and interesting to explore. The gardens and grounds are beautiful. Highly recommend this castle if you are visiting the area. Cafe and gift shop on site.
Claire L — Google review
Plenty of parking, beautiful castle and interesting history. Complimentary audio tour was easy to use. Cafe was good. Loved wandering around the gardens, which were very peaceful to sit in.

A lovely glimpse into the history & life cycle of a castle that is still lived in. Interesting Self guided audio tour and informational panels very well done, extremely friendly docents spaced throughout. Go early as it does get very busy. Beautiful grounds to explore as well.

Culloden Battlefield (National Trust for Scotland)

Mentioned on
1 list
Historical landmark
Cafe
The Culloden Battlefield, the site of the final and violent battle of the Jacobite Rising, offers a visitor center and interactive exhibition. In addition to this, there are various walking paths that lead from Inverness and other nearby attractions such as the Highlanders Museum and Fort George. If you begin your journey in Inverness, Loch Ness is an effortless day trip - it's just 30 minutes away by car.
I truly enjoyed my experience at Culloden. While on a highland tour one of our stops was at this battle field. It was such a wonderful treat to trace back the roots of my family line. Seeing the rocks and markers of the Scottish clans and English armies allowed for the imagination to vision where everyone stood and marched during the battle. The inside museum was educational and well presented.
Rob W — Google review
Such an amazing place. The museum is so interesting, a valuable token of history. I came because I wanted to know more of this famous battle but was amazed to see how much they respected the place, created a whole area to show how the battle really happened. The museum itself gives many valuable information about the battle with numerous activities
Valentine P — Google review
After making our way through the entrance museum, we came out on this huge, lush field. It was hard to believe that so many people died on this field, and our guide helped us to understand the breadth and scale of the effects of this battle. To think what might have happened if the battle had gone a different way, but that is for a different person to tell. Overall, the area was pretty traversable by wheelchair, though some places it did get a bit bumpy. Also, our guide was excellent at helping to take the group on the smoothest places.
Allen W — Google review
What an experience. Fascinating and sobering. The visitor centre provides superb context of the events that lead up to the battle and the battle itself. We took the guided tour of the battlefield and we’re glad we did. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and brought the events to life as we stood in the exact places that the events she so vividly described actually took place. The tour comes highly recommended from us. I would not hesitate to thoroughly recommend this place as a must see.
Martin J — Google review
Last time I was here was in the 70s so big changes Cafe very nice. Guides were very knowledgeable. Well laid out paths with notices telling you the position of the 2 armies Graves had the clan names on them. Big carpark, cost me nothing as I am a national trust member. T
Neil L — Google review
Beautiful surroundings. Tranquility and peace reign supreme. Guided tours are on offer should you wish. Plenty of walk options and is dog friendly. Lovely range of food in the cafe with clear labelling of gluten free items. Plenty of parking too.
Moira D — Google review
This is a really captivating historical site. Give yourself some time to explore the visitor’s center and walk the battlefield. There are plenty of historical markings to help you understand how the battle was carried out.
Dave B — Google review
Visiting the Culloden battlefield was a surreal experience. While the Battlefield can be viewed and walked without entering the Visitor Centre I would recommend first time visitors pay the entry and take a look. There's heaps of Information on the build up and battle presented from both the Governments and Jacobites sides. After a walk through the visitor centre we chose to use the audio guides rather a tour but really depends on your preference. The battlefeild it self was very easy to navigate and the colored flags depicting the Government and Jacobites sides really helped to get and idea of the scale. We visited on a Thursday and while there were many others wandering around the area was large enough to not feel crowded. I would Highly recommend a visit if you touring the Scottish Highlands.

North Coast 500 Moto Experience

Scenic Drives
Can only wholeheartedly recommend. Went spontaneously to them in the morning at 9:30, at 10:00, to rent a bike for 1 day, just for a short sprint on the NC 500. I was fully kitted (boots, pants, jacket,... everything you need, the wife as well), 1h later in Ullapool driving on some of the most beautiful roads on the planet. Good selection of bikes (lowered available as well), absolutley great service! Had the F750GS, bike performed flawlessly. Ride of a lifetime, thank you!
Mircea B — Google review
Great bikes + great people! There are so many worthy routes up this way - take your pick from the whiskey trail, isle of skye, NC500, or I’m sure many others. Really appreciated the full gear kit + low seat bike. And Keith is a lovely fellow - pleasant to chat to, helpful, and kindly offered me a drive to the train station. Will be back!
Denea B — Google review
North Coast 500 Moto Experience was the perfect way to rent a bike for the NC500. Reservation and pickup was a breeze, and the bike was in fantastic shape exactly as advertised. I'm very much looking forward to making it back over to rent from them again!

I did rented from them a BMW 750 on 13-08-2025 . The process was really smooth. The staffs were very polite and supportive. I definitely recommend them.
Mijo J — Google review
Excellent Experience! Rode the NC 500 and enjoyed it so much I kept the bike another week and flew my wife over. Ron was a great guy and very accommodating. He made sure I had new tires and new brakes for the week with my wife. Bikes are perfectly serviced and his gear is first rate. I have rented motorcycles on every continent, but this was the best by far.
Bruce G — Google review
Ron responded to all my initial questions promptly and the booking process was easy. I arranged to be collected from the airport and Ron was flexible when I re-arranged the pick-up time at very short notice. Ron clearly has a superb knowledge of the region and was happy to spend time talking about the various places I could visit and routes I could take on my 3-day trip. Touring around the highlands of Scotland has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend North Coast 500 Moto Experience, thanks very much Ron!
Jonathan B — Google review
A great experience from start to finish. Ron was very helpful and provided everything I needed for a fantastic 5 day trip around the NC500. The bike and gear were perfect for the task. Customer service was top notch and I thoroughly recommend this Company to help you experience your motorbike touring dreams.
Alan G — Google review
Easy to book, quick to respond to questions. Picked us up and delivered us back to our apartment. Bike was in great condition and Ron couldn't have been more helpful. All in all a great service which helped to make it an amazing two days of exploring the Highlands on two wheels.

Inverness Castle, a majestic 1800s red sandstone fortress, stands proudly atop the cliffs overlooking the River Ness. Despite its turbulent past, including destruction after the Battle of Culloden, the castle has been restored to its former glory. Visitors can explore its lush grounds and enjoy panoramic views of Inverness city center and the river. The castle's unique architecture and rich history make it a must-see attraction in Scotland.
Inverness is a beautiful and charming city with so much to offer. The scenery around the area is stunning, from the nearby Loch Ness to the rolling hills and historic sites. The city itself feels welcoming and easy to explore, with plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants to enjoy. Whether you’re interested in history, nature, or just a relaxing getaway, Inverness has something for everyone. The locals are friendly, and the vibe is peaceful yet lively enough to keep you entertained.

Currently undergoing renovation there is no access to the interior of this, relatively modern castle. Closed or not it does dominate views of the River Nis and can be seen easily along Nis Walk
Bernard S — Google review
Only saw from the outside but was spectacular colourant looks new compared to some we have seen.
Sandy P — Google review
In my previous reviews also I have said the same thing that all castles are almost similar and they have nothing extraordinary to showcase except that they are castles & that’s it. The only one castle to see is the Edinburgh Castle on top of the Hill. Worth seeing. But if you can’t reach Edinburgh then any castle is good to see. As we were doing a road trip & we saw 3-4 castles. The only EXCEPTIONAL CASTLE was Edinburgh Castle. Must visit!!

Lovely place to visit ... YouTube : Drone View 120
Drone 1 — Google review
The castle on 5/20/23 is undergoing restoration work and will be opened in a year or so as city services. It is a good walk around and is easily in the middle of the nightlife. There are storage and bars nearby open seven days a week. The Edinburgh Museum and Art Gallery are part of the same complex. I recommend a visit there.
Charles S — Google review
Not currently open to the public. You can walk up the hill to the castle and get great views of the city and river. There are some tablets set in the ground on the city side near the car park which have some interesting historical facts about the castle. It is going to be open to the public in the next few years.
Simon N — Google review
The following review is based on a pre-pandemic trip going old school and only using paper maps and brochures to find places to stop at on a 3-week adventure to Ireland, Scotland, and England. No cell phone or internet. We were not able to enter the castle but were able to walk around the grounds when we visited. The castle blends into the hill side so it looks like it is part of the terrain at some vantage points. If coming from the west, you can get some great shots from the river when walking across the foot bridge. It would have been cool to see inside but even walking around the outside of the castle was fun and the town around the castle has some great shops and restaurants. In our visit we were lucky enough to have live music at one of the pubs.

River Ness, located in Inverness, is a fast-flowing river with a strong current. Walking along the river provides great views, but be prepared for muddy and wet areas. It's advisable to have waterproof gear due to the quickly changing weather. The area is popular for dog walking, although some owners do not clean up after their pets. The Ness Islands offer a park-like setting with interesting wooden benches and old cedar and oak trees.
Enjoyed a lovely walk along the River Ness with wonderful views all around. Peaceful and scenic!

I visited this place so beautiful.
Ali A — Google review
Spend some good time roaming around the river and crossing the foot bridge to catch some good views of the old church nearby. This flows right through the heart of Inverness and adds a lot to the place.
Kapil S — Google review
Lovely walk along here. Would also recommend Ness Islands. We were here mid November so did not have ideal weather conditions but it was very worthwhile!
Yousef A — Google review

The River Ness is a fast flowing river it has a really strong current. You can walk beside the river in Inverness and you get some great views as you go along. It can be muddy and wet in places so good footwear is needed. It is also a good idea to have waterproofs incase you get caught in heavy rain. The weather can change very quickly. The area is popular with dog walkers and sadly some do not clear up after them.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Dunrobin Castle and Gardens, situated in Golspie, is an extravagant castle that has been inhabited by Clan Sutherland since the 1400s. The biggest house in the Highlands, it was mainly built in a French style between 1845 and 1850 although it dates back to 1275. Owned by the dukes of Sutherland, this opulent castle offers a fascinating glimpse into aristocratic life with its rich furnishings and museum displays.
Wow! Stunning castle and grounds. We were lucky to visit on a gorgeous sunny day. We booked in advance & although it was busy it was still easy to walk around at our own pace. It is vast though & a lot of steps but plenty of places to stop & sit. The museum is a must see & so unusual! Another highlight to the visit. We did sit & wait for the falconry show but as it was hot we sat in the shade under the trees. Unfortunately the guy did not have a microphone so you could not hear what he was saying & his performance was aimed more at the people sat on the benches at the top of the lawn. I think they need to review that as we weren’t the only people sat down the side in the shade & watched for a while then left. We did get to see the birds as they were on perches on the bottom of the display lawn. All in all staff are lovely & the cafe had good choice of food & drinks at a reasonable price. Handled very well with the amount of people they were serving. Definitely worth a visit!
Karina W — Google review
Amazing castle and grounds. The staff were extremely helpful and very informative. Included in the admission price are two falconry displays which really made the day. Best to arrive early before the coaches turn up. Definitely worth the visit.
Del W — Google review
This was one of the most beautiful castles that we went into. It was completely furnished and had attendance in rooms that you can ask questions. Was really a nice morning spent. On the first floor was a snack area where you can get coffee tea or to nibble on after the tour was over.
John K — Google review
A stunning castle. The gentleman at the castle passionately explained its history to us and even let us take a photo of a castle photo taken in the late 1800s. If we had had the energy to go down to the garden, we could have seen the castle from the other side for an amazing view.
Hanna J — Google review
You must buy tickets for this castle in advance, as they only open for a short time period and are quite busy. This castle looks amazing from the garden. It's like a castle pops out from a fairy tale. The garden is very nicely designed as well, especially the thistle and lavender, which are very well bred. Inside is not that impressive, as most of the rooms are quite low key, and not much extravagant furniture. However, the white lilac ceiling was quite stunning. I have not seen any interior design like that before. One thing I dislike about the castle are the over amount of deer head specimens and some animal carpets. Apparently the owners used to live hunting deets and went to Africa and killed some lions and leopard and made them into carpets. I understand those are a part of the castle so I have no complain to the staff, but I am simply saying animal lovers should be aware of this before they enter the castle. Do not miss the falconry show in the garden. It’s very educational. You get to meet Harris Hawk, American Kestrel, Barn Owl, etc. The cafe is great too. Their cakes and soup are very good. Overall, I had a great experience here. Definitely worth coming for.
Etheria H — Google review
Gorgeous castle and grounds. Closed for the season when we visited in November but we took a punt and drove in. Of course we couldn't go into the castle but we nosied around the gardens which were beautiful. Note to self come earlier in the year next time!
Geraldine D — Google review
The self managed tour was very interesting with some very well informed volunteers to give information if asked for it. We did not manage to go round the gardens as our mobility is not too good, but the views over the gardens are beautiful.. The cafe was very busy but food was lovely.
S G — Google review
Spectacular castle, beautiful history, beautiful monarchs and the castle very well preserved. The staff is well trained and very kind. A small garden in the back is clean and pleasant for a walk. A small souvenir shop, a kiosk that had one liter bottles for sale, I think of Dunrobin gin... I think it was good but I'm not a gin taster but a whiskey taster 😉. I liked it. PS. A large parking lot on the left as you enter and for the disabled at the entrance to the castle.

Loo roll, hand towel and soap! Thanks for providing toilets, donation made. Dawn to dusk opening
Hilary — Google review
These public lavatories should be avoided at night unless absolutely necessary. This is due to the fact that they have no electric lighting which made the evacuation of my bowels more challenging than usual. The cleanliness of these facilities also leaves a lot to be desired. As I departed the facilities I noticed my shorts had fallen into a pool of urine I had not noticed whilst sat down. All in all a very unsatisfactory lavatory experience!

I am a professional dog walker so rely on public toilets during the week when I'm out and about (when they are open!) I think Dornoch toilets leave a lot to be desired as do the toilets at Balintore(which aren't listed)which I unfortunately also have to use occasionally.

Royal Dornoch Golf Club is a stunning and expansive golf club that offers multiple courses, practice facilities, and a clubhouse overlooking the sea. The course provides breathtaking views of the Moray Firth coastline, making it a picturesque location for a round of golf. The Foxy (14th hole) stands out as one of the best holes with its challenging against-the-wind play. Despite its difficulty, the course is well-maintained and offers beautiful scenery on every hole.
Amazing golf course, in pristine condition. The views anywhere around the course are amazing. Stay out the gorse bushes and it's a very enjoyable course. New club house looks like it's nearly finished but hope the staff in the new clubhouse are a bit more welcoming and friendly. Pro shop staff friendly and helpful. Would recommend this course to anyone that hasn't been to definitely come and play it.
Atta L — Google review
Royal Dornoch feels like sacred ground. Remote, pure, and breathtaking from start to finish. The turf is firm, the greens are true, and the views over the Dornoch Firth are unforgettable. It rewards good golf and punishes the lazy. A soulful, timeless links experience.
MAX K — Google review
We booked it for dog friendly , the hotel is old as it’s an old building. The restaurant looks over the golf course and ocean which is outstanding. The food is excellent. Dornoch is beautiful town. The only thing we would have preferred is a ground floor with a dog and flooring that can be cleaned. The carpet is very stained and is on floor 2 . It would be more hygienic for hard flooring not carpet

This is a beautiful, well kept, well presented, impressive building. For the architecture alone it is a must for a visit when in Dornoch. You can comfortably circumnavigate the perimeter that provides some stunning views of not only the cathedral but Dornoch town itself, but care should be taken when moving around the roads on all sides as traffic is present. It is easy to see the importance of this building with respect to the infrastructure of the town and the positioning of other important structures. However, it is when entering the building that the true beauty is revealed. Laid out as a cross, the walls support an impressive roof structure and the stained glass windows set within them provide an array of biblical scenes which add to the splendour. Clearly designed for religious means with areas of worship for the congregation and opertions by the clergy, all overseen by a large church organ that compliments the space. It is a peaceful building, and even if you are not a religious visitor it provides a comfortable feeling when touring the numerous areas of intrest to be found. Like most churches it is free to enter but you can help with its upkeep by donating. For me a very pleasant experience and worth the 5 stars, therefore strongly recommended for a visit.

Charming and Peaceful Stop at Dornoch Cathedral Dornoch Cathedral is a small but beautiful cathedral tucked right in the heart of Dornoch town. Though modest in size, it has a quiet charm and a rich sense of history that makes it well worth a short visit. Originally built in the 13th century, the cathedral has been lovingly restored over the years and is still very much at the center of the community. The building is well maintained, and the peaceful atmosphere inside offers a nice break from the outside world. The stained glass windows are particularly lovely, casting soft light across the stone interior and adding to the cathedral’s calming feel. There are plaques and displays inside sharing a bit of the cathedral’s history and notable figures connected to it — a nice touch if you're interested in the heritage of the area. It's an easy place to find, right in the middle of town, and only a short walk from the shops and cafés nearby. We spent about 30 minutes here and found it to be a really pleasant and reflective stop. Definitely worth popping in if you’re passing through Dornoch — a peaceful spot full of character and history.

Small Cathedral that located a crossed from old Carnegie court house. It is small but very beautiful and well maintained. It is a such peaceful place that they even left the 18 century type of key in the lock! There are volunteer display and selling some small handcrafted items to raise money! It’s just wonderful!

Founded in 1224 but largely rebuilt by the Duchess of Sutherland in 1835 along with a family burial vault in the chancel. A small but well built cathedral (Cathedral simply means it’s the home of the bishop) whose recent claims to fame are the baptism of Madonna’s son Rocco in 2000 and the wedding of Elon Musk to Talulah Riley in 2010. Windows in the cathedral are dedicated to Andrew Carnegie whose home at Skibo Castle is nearby.

A beautiful small Cathederal in a beautiful setting opposite Dornoch Castle Hotel. Ot is well worth a visit as is the adjoining churchyard. It has a nice shop in inside and is staffed by helpful and friendly volunteers. If on the NC500 East take time to stop off and visit and sit and realise how lucky we are to have such a gem on our doorstep.

We're with Nigel! You should be too. I would highly recommend touring with Nigel and his crew. I worked out the arrangements via e-mail with Nigel easily and Thomas our guide was at the port waiting for us so it was easy to start our tour. It was very nice to be able to get to know Thomas and he'd point out so many little details about the local area as we heading between stops, offered to pull over for photo opportunities, help take a photo of us, etc. Staff at the distillery and Dunrobin Castle told us we were in good hands when they saw we were part of Nigel's tours and said nothing but good things about them so it's really complementary hearing such from their colleagues. We never felt rushed for as much as we were able to see in a single day. We visited Dunrobin Castle, Falls of Shin, Loch Fleet, Royal Dornoch, Balblair Distillery and more. Our tour gave us a real taste of the area and it's natural beauty, history, culture and left us wanting to return to Scotland. Another thoughtful touch was toward the end of our tour when we stopped at Millionaire's View, Nigel had arranged for a champagne toast and sweet treat to celebrate 20th anniversary. I can't say enough good things about our tour and it's nice to be able to support small, local businesses that really go the extra mile for their customers.

We had a wonderful day with Thomas during our stop in Invergordon. He was engaging, knowledgeable, and flexible, adjusting the private tour on the spot to match our interests, which made the experience feel truly personalized. It was a relaxed, enjoyable day, and through his stories and perspective, we got a great overview of that region of Scotland. The value of this private tour compared to the big bus tours (which were even more expensive) was simply unbeatable. We would absolutely recommend booking with Nigel and Thomas to anyone visiting Invergordon.

We had a fabulous day out with Nigel. We visited lots of places we would maybe have missed or were unaware of. Nigel is an engaging and knowledgable guide. Highly recommended

Guide Allen was good. A very nice car, but 4 Americans (plus Allen) meant 3 in the backseat which was very crowded. I thought we saw a lot, maybe a bit too much. A lunch stop of 30 minutes would be better than a sandwich for 10 minutes at the Falls.
M C — Google review
This was probably the most beautiful and adventurous way I could have gotten an introduction to Scotland, ever! A large part of that opinion is the guide himself. I was with Nigel and this guy is just a really cool person, who can talk about anything Scottish related and is also a really nice and intelligent man himself. I am really thankful I have gotten a Scotland tour with this man. Just a shame I can’t give a higher rating than 5 stars!!!

We booked a day tour with Nigel via Email and he collected us at the cruise port. Thomas, his son, was our guide for the day. Thomas is a fun person to spend the day with and our party of 5 (4 adults and 1 kid) had a geat day at the Highland Experience Tour. He explained a lot during the tour and the time just flew by. Would definitely recommend!

Nigel provided a very detailed itinerary and answered all questions promptly. We joined one other couple on May 14th fir a delightful day with our guide, Kevin. He was extremely knowledgeable about the area and the history and kept us amused throughout the day. When we visited the battlefield & Outlander sites, he even shared some tips with other tours. We highly recommend Nigel's Invergordon Shore Excursions!

A wonderful excursion. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to spend a special day in the Scotish Highlands. Johnny our guide was excellent and managed our time so we could get the best out of the day. We taken to many different spots and Johnny catered for any additional place that anyone in our group of 8 wanted to visit. The tour took in some tourist spots but also went to places not on the tourist map. To me the day was more like Johnny showing friends around his beloved highlands than an organised tour. Thank you to the team of Nigel, Elaine amd Johnny for wonderful day..

Great tour! Highly recommend! We booked thru the operator's website not the cruise line. Cost was 1/3 of what cruise line was charging for a similar tour! Invergordon Bus Tour operator office location was right outside port gate. Duncan (head of operations) checked us in & got us squared away with details about the day. We met our lovely tour guide Allie & our motorcoach driver, Hamish. The motorcoach is very nice. (It doesn't have bathroom facilities though so use the toilets at the port before.) We stopped briefly in a small town of Beauly to stretch our legs & a bathroom break on our way to Loch Ness. Before venturing onto Inverness & Cawdor Castle we stopped for a picture at Loch Ness (no Nessie sightings) & a stop to see some highland "coos" . Inverness was pretty (for what we were able to see in the short time we were there.) Cawdor Castle has beautiful gardens & the history is very interesting too. A+ job to Hamish 's driving into the very narrow estate gate that was originally made for horse drawn carriages! Allie is quite knowledgeable about the local area lore and history of Scotland. She even sang us a few Scottish folk songs. Hamish is a funny character & great driver. We arrived back to the port terminal in plenty of time to look around the little port town & get back onboard our ship. Definitely would book again with them!

Great tour! Highly recommend! We were fortunately transferred to Invergordon Bus Tour by another agency, and I’m so glad we were! Their tour was much more interesting and reasonably priced—about one-third of what the cruise line was charging for something similar. The entrance ticket to Cawdor Castle was even included, which was a great bonus The Invergordon Bus Tour office was conveniently located at the first stop of the cruise shuttle—super easy to find. We had a fantastic tour with our guide, Colllllllin, and our driver, Hamish. Colin made the experience truly enjoyable—he taught us some Gaelic, shared lots of funny stories and jokes, and kept us entertained throughout the journey. Despite the less-than-perfect weather, the tour was well-organized and ran smoothly. Colin adjusted the schedule to ensure we got back to our cruise on time, and his storytelling between stops made the travel time fly by. If you want to see Nessie—or even watch a video of her swimming in Loch Ness—just ask Colin. He’ll make it happen!

We had a fantastic tour with Russell and Glen!!Well paced, organized and so much more affordable than the cruise excursions. Our tour took us to Beauly, Inverness and Cawdor Castle. Our family of 3 loved our trip to the Scottish Highland and the great commentary and service from the driver and guide.

Our tour today was nothing short of Amazing. From the moment we stepped on the charter bus to the drop off point, our bus driver Russell and Glenn , our tour guide were very attentive and friendly to us All. I’d highly recommend this tour company. Half the price of the cruise ships and quite funny. Definitely 5 stars
Kelly B — Google review
Our Taste of the North tour was first rate and I would recommend it to anyone. Gordon went out of his way to be flexible when it first looked like our cruise ship would not dock at all, and then it docked 3 hours late. He offered a full refund, and then when we were able to do a shortened tour he offered a partial refund. The tour was very comprehensive anyway. The content really wowed us and George was an excellent and highly professional driver/guide.
Aida M — Google review
We had a wonderful tour with James and Glenn! The tour was nicely paced, went through great scenery, and our guides were incredible! The moments in the bus were filled with nice stories and great information and the times at the attractions were well organised and went perfectly. If you’re in Invergordon by cruise you should check them out. They offer the same routes as the cruise does but at a cheaper rate.

We Just got back from our British Isle cruise and Invergordon Bus Tours did a great job with our tour. Guide Glen and Driver Russell were both fantastic! We also loved that the prices were better than the cruise lines, provided excellent service and still got us back to the ship in good time!

I wanted a special bottle of single malt whisky for special occasions. I searched the web looking for the best rated. Dalmore 12 years was that bottle. I bought it and soon had a celebration at a gorgeous hotel. I opened this bottle and me and my wife drank a toast. Wow. What a fantastic malt. Everything the experts said. Thank you Dalmore Distillery for producing such a star.
Robin H — Google review
It's a nice whisky but the visitor center is not very interesting. It's small so it feels crowded when 5 people are around. And you have the regular selection and no miniature bottles. And if you want to taste something it's 5£. I've seen better visitor centers and I don't like the fact that you have to pay for ever sip to try before you buy.

The production was not running because of shut down work. Therefore the visit was free but it didn't really make a difference to us because it was very well explained! We learnt a lot and enjoyed ourselves. There is one tasting at the end, but you can try other whiskies for a small charge. I recommend!

An opportunity to learn more about the history and incredible importance of the Flow Country. The easy, one mile trail out to a lookout tower and through the insects- and plant-filled bogs was incredibly lovely. A beautiful location and nearby there is a small free, interesting visitor centre with a toilet too. Longer trails are possible to do too.

What a wonderful, beautiful, quiet place. Such a vast, open space, filled with nature, insects and interesting plants. Well worth the visit, well worth the time you will not regret visiting here, the only thing you will, is having to leave! Wonderful!

I’d definitely recommend visiting Forsinard Flows. There is parking available at the train station, and a small but very informative and interactive visitors centre (with a toilet and a coffee/tea machine). We did a lovely little walk (about 35 mins total) along the boardwalk to the viewing platform, and really enjoyed the information panels along the way. There are plenty of plants and animals (including lizards!) to look out for, and the scenery is gorgeous, even on a cloudy day!

Beautiful in every aspect of nature. I have this privilege of be here in September last year. Weather was very unpredictable and windy(before storm Agnes), but even we was alone and was so strong wind, I love it. Definitely I will back here in one day, when will more warmer and quite to enjoy. We visited cafe and make lovely tea for us. For lovers of birds and nature like me, it's heaven 💗

Forsinard flows is an incredible place to visit. Learning about the place and seeing the wildlife you really understand why it is such an important place that needs protecting. On just a short visit we saw red deer and their fawns, common lizards, sundews! And lots of birds.

Nestled in the picturesque Highlands of Scotland, The Singleton Distillery offers a delightful blend of history and modernity. This beautifully renovated 19th-century distillery invites visitors to explore its vibrant interiors, inspired by the verdigris hues found in copper. Guests can embark on an engaging guided tour that lasts about an hour, providing insights into the whisky-making process from start to finish, including bottling. It's advisable to wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers due to varying temperatures throughout the distillery.
We booked the first tour of the day. We had a knowledgeable, multilingual guide and friendly guide. After our tasting, we ordered a coffee and some desert in the beautiful café. And it's only as we were leaving that we noticed the car charging stations.

In August, we embarked on an unforgettable visit to a remarkable Scotch whiskey distillery nestled on the outskirts of the charming city of Inverness. We arrived without pre-booking our tickets, uncertain of our arrival timing after our scenic NC500 journey. To our delight, there were tickets available for the next scheduled session when we reached the distillery. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary, appealing even to those who may not consider themselves Scotch whiskey aficionados. This distillery boasts a rich and storied history, with its roots tracing back to 1838, all of which was expertly narrated by a knowledgeable team member who guided us through the premises. The tour began with us exploring the expansive and awe-inspiring cellar, which housed an astonishing collection of oak casks, each brimming with the potential for exceptional flavors and aromas. We were also introduced to massive malting vessels, where the grains are transformed, and encountered the famed Copper Dog. One of the captivating details we learned about was the local sourcing of the key ingredients: the pristine water and grains used in their production. The water, crystal clear and pure, flows from a nearby reservoir, marked by a towering wind turbine that stands sentinel in the distance, symbolizing the marriage of tradition and sustainable practices. As we neared the conclusion of our tour, we were treated to a delightful whiskey tasting session that truly elevated our visit. Each sip was a celebration of craftsmanship, allowing us to savor the complex flavors and aromas that make this distillery’s offerings so exceptional. It was a fitting end to a remarkable journey into the world of Scotch whiskey.

We had the pleasure of joining a tour at The Singleton Distillery in Glen Ord, and it was truly one of the highlights of our time in Scotland. Our guide, Adam, made the entire experience outstanding from start to finish. The tour was beautifully structured – not only did we get a fascinating insight into the history and craftsmanship behind Singleton whisky, but Adam also managed to explain the complex distilling process in a way that felt engaging, approachable, and easy to follow. He struck the perfect balance between sharing detailed knowledge and keeping the atmosphere light and enjoyable. What stood out most to us was Adam’s passion and enthusiasm. You could tell he truly loves what he does, and that energy was infectious – it made the tour not just informative, but also very personal and memorable. The tasting session was an absolute treat. Each whisky was introduced with care and context, allowing us to really appreciate the different flavor profiles and nuances. It wasn’t just a tasting, it felt like a journey through the character and soul of Singleton whiskies. Each whisky is slowly batch-distilled for a smooth, balanced taste and aged in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry casks, creating fruity, sweet, and spicy notes. We left with a much deeper appreciation for whisky, for the traditions of Glen Ord, and of course with some good memories to take home. We can only recommend this experience to anyone visiting the Highlands – whether you are new to whisky or already a connoisseur, this tour will leave a lasting impression.
Lydia L — Google review
Glad to have chosen this distillery considering number of distilleries are available but sometimes its all about the right experience and that's exactly what we got here. Our tour guide had a very good knowledge on whiskies and about the distillery, the process on how its made etc. He answered our "curiosity" questions very well and made the tour interesting with number of facts. We ended the tour with a whisky tasting session which was great. Whilst we did the tour, my other family who decided not to do the tour had a good time in their bar/cafe with some really magical drinks. Overall, highly recommended.

A must see if you’re next to Inverness. You’ll learn everything you should know about whisky and distillery. The visit ends with 3 generous glasses of whisky. You can bring them with you, in little bottles, so you can enjoy it later at your house. Wonderful smells and incredible shop, with so many whisky to buy. A special thanks to Hazel, our wonderful guide who took the time to speak slowly for us 😉
Ln P — Google review
Very friendly knowledgable guides and staff. I great place to learn the process of making whisky, from the raw ingredients to the finished liquid. Glen Ord is a good place to start or continue your journey into single malt whiskies. The tasting just finishes off the tour. If you are driving, the samples will be bottled as mimiatures to be enjoyed later. A good half day excursion if you stay for coffee and cake in the shop area. You could always buy the 54yo whisky at £28850 for a very nicely packaged bottle!

Mary was fantastic and she explained the process and answers our questions well. Nice fun tour. I like the fact that they took care of drivers and let them have a takeaway whiskey.

A fantastic location and a must have on your list of places to visit. Everything is well organised and thought through about the tours. Our lovely guide, Beardy Brian, ensured we had a great time, whilst explaining the process of whisky production in a clear and interesting fashion! Afterwards tasting of Glen Ord product's was an enjoyable experience (and huge respect for taking kids and drivers into consideration!). Overall, a fun experience for everyone, definitely recommended.

It is not currently possible to sample the local spring water and by the looks of it, visitors won't be able to sample it for a long time. Rogie Falls

Nature & Parks
Hiking area
Waterfall with close-up views from a suspension bridge, known for leaping salmon in late summer.
Beautiful walk trees so tall leading you down to a suspension bridge so capture the beautiful water fall , if lucky may see salmon jumping ( we never we went in May first this in the morning maybe it's timing ) you can see the water fall without having to go onto the bridge if concerned of heights .small car park just off the road , dies get busy so to avoid disappointment get there early .we got there at 8:30 am and no one was in the car park ...when we left 1.5 hours later car parked filling up quickly . Nice little walk for the dog too
Sam M — Google review
This is a spectacular waterfall, easily accessed via a 10 minute walk from the car park down to the bridge. There are 2 circular walks here, but the coloured signs get confusing and we just came back the way we went in. Note - if you cross the bridge and keep going, you you’ll end up miles away in a different car park. Small fee for parking, which is,li,tied, but runs over constantly. Well worth the half hour stop on the way to or from Ullapool.
Stephen S — Google review
Great place to visit with a nice walk through the forest to a suspension bridge and views of the waterfall. Even more special if the salmon are leaping. Unless the salmon are about, it's unlikely that you would spend more than an hour here, so it is a bit disappointing that the car park charges start at a minimum of 2 hours at £2. At least there is a toilet here though
Carl — Google review
Great walk to the falls. There is a lovely circular through the Forrest that takes you up the side of the river to the falls. Car park was reasonably priced with a small area to picnic. Public toilets are available.
Alex C — Google review
Nice dramatic falls with good well signed walks. Worthwhile visiting in autumn as the colours on the trees in the valley are great and the flow in the falls can be more spectacular. Parking is now paid for, so minimum fee of £2 but contactless payment is available at the machine. Toilets were closed as they are only open until the end of October
David C — Google review
We’ve never ever seen a waterfall before so we knew we had to come and visit whilst up in the Scottish Highlands. We did the Salmon Trail which was the easier of the two. It was about a 7-8 min walk down to the falls, which was entirely downhill. The bridge was stunning! Be warned, if you have vertigo or are unstable on your feet, the bridge is very rickety and moves a lot at either end when people are walking on it. The middle section is the most stable if you want to stand and take photos. Walking back, there are very steep inclines, but there are multiple benches to stop and sit on if you need to. The car park is not huge, so there’s a possibility of not being able to park upon arrival. We arrived at about 3:00pm, and got lucky to grab a space as someone left. ABSOLUTELY worth a visit!

Walked the riverside trail but were disappointed as we didn’t spot any salmon leaping. Had lunch at the Salt and Salmon Company then walked back to the zigzag path overlooking the car park. Great place. Lots of hands on things for kids. History of area well presented. Small cafe is nice and the lady who works there is friendly, welcoming and engaging - made us feel very welcome. Outside the play park is good. The maze wasn't quite grown but I'm sure will be great once it is. We ventured on the walk up the hill and this too is well set out. Definitely recommend a visit to this venue. We hope to visit again when in the area.

Very disappointed not to be admitted with my dog on a lead. Travelled 20 miles to visit the centre and noted the sign dogs permitted on leads only, just to be sternly refused entry. No wonder there are not a lot of visitors here.

This is an excellent place we were glad it was open. It is an information centre with a small shop which is well stocked. There is also a cafe and toilet facilities. The lady on duty was very chatty. One other thing is the story of Lairg which was very interesting to read and learn about. There are two walks you can go on, one by the Lairg Dam and the other goes away up the hill with great views of Loch Shin and Lairg. If you are in the area make sure you take a wee detour and visit this place it really is worth it.

We've been coming here for years, such a beautiful spot and a great walk perfect length for littles. Dog friendly too. The path is well maintained and there's lots to see. The first part of the wander is through the woods and up the Loch then you go out into the open and get some amazing views. It is such a lovely walk!
Team W — Google review
Interesting place to visit in Lairg. We were recommended to go by our campsite host, as there is a new exhibition about a recent discovery of a asteroid striking the area (1200 million years ago). Local children have made some lovely posters, that can be seen on the path to the centre entrance. The display inside is very informative and describes how the crater was found and how it was formed. We also read the local history of how Lairg was founded and developed. There's plenty to see and do especially for youngsters, both inside and out and admission is free.

Wear your walking boots as very uneven in places, also wear plenty of insect repellent as when we went on a sunny very warm day in July you will get eaten by horseflys. No signs to point you in the right direction but the path is fairly clear. Once you climb to the top which is not an easy climb, it gives stunning views on a clear day.
Dean R — Google review
Did this Hike on my own on a sunny morning and was so amazed by the views and scenery! Theres a small free car park at the start. The walk in total took me about 1hour 45mins to get there and back. The first section on the walk follows a lovely stream with waterfalls, it then takes you through the valley with the mountains either side of you before you start going uphill to the caves. The cafes are so beautiful and interesting! Spent some time there admiring the views before heading back. The hike does get rocky in places but I wouldn't say its hard. And the uphill section is quite short so doesn't get to strenuous.
Poppy G — Google review
Great walk highly recommended done it a few times before and keep coming back. Saw loads of red deer since were in the middle of the rutting season. Always fascinating seeing the fresh water springs bubbling up through the ground and off the paths are sink holes best not to venture near them. Thankfully the rain held off all day.
Graeme L — Google review
Beautiful little hike. There are Expect it to take 2-3 hours depending on your pace. There are two routes up/down, the first you come too is far more challenging, if you want something a little easier continue on the main path and it naturally loops around and up
Paul H — Google review
Great hike with beautiful nature and your dog can walk off leash. There's only water from a stream for the first mile. The climb up to the caves is pretty steep but you can take a roundtrip via a path that's not so steep.
Alice V — Google review
A must visit. Unique place. The walk isn't bad at all. A little steep. If you need the easier walk follow the path that brings you around not the direct one across the river.
Colin C — Google review
My days of squeezing through narrow underground openings are behind me so opted not to explore farther than the mouth of the caves, it's roughly a 7K round trip from the free car park, the walk is fairly straightforward and easy although care should be taken at higher elevation as a slip or stumble could be quite costly, that being said I enjoyed this part of the walk most giving almost alpine vibes, the natural spring on the way up is nice and surprising to see the amount of water that comes from seemingly nowhere.
Gary G — Google review
Nice long hike Good footwear needed as it’s over lots of rocks but if you follow the trail to the right you get to see inside the caves…. Not great for people with a fear of heights 😂

Nestled in the stunning landscape of Durness, Smoo Cave is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Scotland's North Coast. This remarkable cave has become a canvas for visitors who leave heartfelt messages on pebbles gathered from the nearby beach, creating a unique and personal touch to the entrance. The journey to Smoo Cave offers breathtaking views, with two paths leading down—one more accessible than the other—but both rewarding adventurers with awe-inspiring sights.
Really interesting spot! Definitely recommend having a look! We went after a lot of rainfall so unfortunately boats weren't running but it did give us an interesting look at the cave while it was in 'full flood' Dress up for walking with good shoes, the walk down is quite steep and you WILL get wet at the bottom from above and definitely if you walk down the wooden walkway to the waterfall. Not much parking at the top so recommend getting there early, although there are more places to walk a little walk up the road. Definitely go up the road to Cheese N Toasted afterwards!
Sophie H — Google review
What a beautiful spot, even with the horrendous weather we had whilst visiting. A definite must visit. The views at every angle are stunning. The walk from the car park is about 25-30 minutes in total (round walk) and well worth it. There are also free toilets on site.
Matthew B — Google review
Excellent place to stop. Car park can be a bit busy, however, there is a regular turnover of people, so you shouldn't have to wait too long for a space to become available. There are toilets at the car park too. It's a little walk down to the cave and back, but nothing too strenuous. there are tours of the cave available, however, you can just wander to the first pool by yourself at no cost.
Carl — Google review
Very busy at the car park when I went in August, but still had an amazing experience going into the cave. Lots of steps to go down, but well worth it. The water fall is pretty spectacular. Places to eat and public toilets at the car park.

Did the nc500 at start of october & this should definitely be included as 1 of ur must see places. Unsure of the force of water during the summer months but we were their just after storm Amy had been through the Highlands & the force of water inside this natural cave was just incredible. We will definitely re-visit in October '26 when we're back on the NC.
Nathan L — Google review
The Cave is OK, bit of a anticlimax, and not that interesting. However the journey from John O'groats follow g the NC 200 is jaw dropping and we'll worth the journey.
Dave — Google review
Smoo Cave is a spectacular natural wonder set just east of Durness on Scotland’s rugged North Coast. Its enormous sea-cave entrance (about 40 m wide and 15 m high) opens into a dramatic interior where freshwater and sea erosion combine in one of the UK’s most memorable cave systems. From the road-side car park, a steep but well-maintained path leads you down to the cave (expect some steps and uneven ground). The walk isn’t long, but the setting is so dramatic that the drop in elevation is part of the experience. You can explore the front chamber and waterfall viewpoint free of charge any time of year. For deeper access — including a small boat ride into the inner chambers — you need to take a guided tour (seasonal, weather permitting). Tours cost about £15 for adults and £5 for children. Highlights The scale is impressive: a huge cavern entrance and a dramatic waterfall where the river plunges inside. Very photogenic, particularly the view across the wooden walkway, the waterfall chamber and the interplay of light, water and rock. It’s easy to just spend 20-30 minutes enjoying the front chamber; add another ~30 minutes (or more) if doing the boat tour. Things to Know / Tips Tours are weather dependent. Heavy rain or high water can lead to cancellations — since the cave is “active” (river + sea), water levels change quickly. Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear. Paths are rough, with steps and uneven surfaces. Not very accessible for people with mobility issues — the descent/ascent from car park to cave entrance is steep/stepped. The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn — longer daylight, nicer weather, more chance the tours are running. Verdict Smoo Cave is a must-see if you’re travelling the North Coast 500 or exploring the far north Highlands. Even without doing the full tour, the front cave and waterfall chamber are dramatic enough. With the paid tour, you get a bit of adventure and insight into its geology. Just be prepared for the terrain and the weather to possibly disrupt plans.
Tania W — Google review
Great stop whilst in the area, nice but challenging walk down and the up from the cave, entry into the cave to view the waterfall is free, if you want to go further in by boat then that is chargeable.

Lovely walk, somewhat challenging if youre not used to the hills, overall very enjoyable, the Globe is a 15 min walk so if youre travelling with someone less mobile then its ideal as you still get amazing views all over. Very informative and I would say one where you can take children (with supervision)

Well worth a visit if you are in the area, of course I had to walk the the whole thing. it was amazing great views and very interesting information and over in the distance is Stack Pollaidh whitch I hiked the next day.

This is a lovely walk with stunning views, not for everyone can be a little steep and quite slippery, good footwear needed. If you want to stay overnight in a campervan there is now a £10 charge. Toilets open all night but no longer any drinking water available (shame). Still one of my favourite park ups on the Nc500
Stephen M — Google review
So much info about the geology of Scotland and all clearly presented on colourful boards with graphics that are easy to understand. Wonderful walk up to the top of the crag, well signposted and good clear path. Really enjoyed it. Also toilets and parking.
Sarah F — Google review
Did the trail on a wet day — the path was a bit slippery in places and there are some steep stairs to tackle, but the effort was well worth it. The views over the loch were absolutely spectacular. On the return leg, we were lucky enough to spot a red stag — a real highlight and a perfect way to end the walk. A beautiful trail overall, but best done with good footwear and care on wet days.

A very interesting spot if your in anyway interested in the rocks under your feet , if geology is not your thing the views from on top of the crag are spectacular , the crag trail is well laid out with lots of info panels and its a great way to spend a couple of hours .

A modern ticket office and passenger lounge with informative, pleasant staff, and nice surroundings to wait for boarding. Dedicated car park for passengers bringing vehicles. Boarding process was slick and smooth, and the onboard staff and catering were excellent. Clear, detailed announcements keep you in the picture as you travel.
Dave M — Google review
Recently took the Ferry for 3 day return trips looking for Whales and Dolphins. All of the staff we encountered from the Booking Office, Boarding Staff and onboard staff were so approachable, friendly, professional and chatty. The turnaround of cars and foot passengers is slick. The Ferry has clean amenities on board and ample for lots of passengers. A delight.

The last thing I thought I could have eaten onboard, Gluten and Dairy free breakfast! Seeing my mum had ordered this made me jump straight in the queue. The sausages did contain Gluten, so I opted for the vegetarian sausages. We were spoilt for breakfast! On the return home, I had a baked potato with coronation chicken. Felt like a nuisance asking what items contained Dairy/GF but the chef and staff made me feel at ease and were very helpful. Well done guys! Great food onboard.

Sango Sands Oasis is a cliff top campsite that offers pitches with hook-ups, showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities. Visitors have praised the location for being next to an award-winning beach and appreciated the warm welcome from staff. The campers' kitchen provides shelter for cooking in inclement weather, while the on-site breakfast bar serves hot rolls. Despite strong winds affecting camping plans for some visitors, the site's amenities including clean showers and toilets were well-received.
Amazing location overlooking the bay and beautiful beach. Facilities were excellent with great showers. We had hard standing , EHU pitch and it was fairly flat. Grass pitches were also available. We have a T6 and always sleep in the pop top, but it was so windy on the nights we were there that we slept on the downstairs bed instead (and it was fine after that). Had the most amazing view of the sun coming up over the cliff in the morning. A beautiful site.

This was our second visit and it did not disappoint! We love this site and could not recommend it any higher. From the moment you arrive to the friendly smiles of the owners to the huge smile that will appear on your face when you look over the side of the cliff to the beautiful beach below and out to sea. It is idyllic, peaceful, a fantastic location to sit and unwind or go for a walk. The showers are always clean, there is a kitchen area for those who are camping and don't have their own cooking facilities. It also boasts a laundry room with washing machines and dryers. Nearby is the pub which has really friendly staff and a pool table. There is a shop just up the road which stocks all of the things you could possibly need. Can highly recommend their fresh sausage rolls and the fresh cakes looked yummy as well! Keep walking and you will get to Balnakeil Craft Village where you will find a cafe with the best hot chocolate I have ever tasted. Keep walking further down the lane and you will end up at Balnakeil Beach where there is an old Church and graveyard which are definitely worth a visit. In the other direction from the campsite you will find Smoo Cave which again is a must to visit.

It has everything for every need (late September 25)! Multilingual Friendly staff at reception, throughout the campsite and the bar. There's a breakfast hut but always missed due to being late risers. Several washing up areas for the dishes and folk. Views to die for any time of the day, 2 beaches. Ideal for foraging sea weeds (delicious and healthy). If you love seeing shooting stars, Northern lights (if you are lucky) & the milky way, this is the place to be. Walking distance from the caves, walks, wire thing and cliff jumping and many more activities. Note: there are 2 roads to get to the camp. Be careful with Google maps especially if you have an old and delicate campervan. 1st one is super steep descend and 2nd one is an ordinary road. Will definitely be back again. Would highly recommend
Ergun S — Google review
Visited in mid September. Beautiful views at the campsite of the beach and within a scenic short walk to Smoo cave. Clean ample showers and washing facilities. Friendly welcome upon check-in. It's a popular campsite. We was able to get a non-electric pitch after 12pm as they were fully booked. A really nice campsite, reason for 4 star is the price was high for a non-electric pitch on slightly waterlogged ground. There was rabbit droppings, which frustratingly were everywhere on the field and had to be careful not to walk them into our campervan.
Ann-Marie T — Google review
A couple of nights here to take a break from driving, well worth it for the views from pitch 64 alone. A bit windy due to Amy, but with hydraulic levellers deployed, stable. EHU added to the comfort. Friendly helpful staff. Washing machine and dryer totalling £9 for a big load. Bracing walk on the beach to clear the lungs. Recommended

Fabulous location ! Overlooking the beach we had great views and could watch the sunrise which was beautiful - friendly staff, clean facilities - great little bar which had a nice buzz - we had clear skies at night so lots of star gazing! Great local walks to more fabulous beaches and coast line - Definitely the site to book first and in advance - we stayed two nights and so glad we did - I had a dip in the sea one morning which was fantastic! Highly recommend Sango Sands and hope to visit again in the near future! :)
Rachel F — Google review
The location is lovely but nothing there, campsite clean most pitches have sea view even now in late October was very busy, toilet shower block clean fresh. The site itself could do with some care and spruce up no flowers lights WiFi etc basically just a layered field, the view is only nice part! But realistically for £34 per night it's reasonably priced comparison to alot of others. The guy at reception took my cash, told me pitch number left me to it no receipt or advice.

Sights & Landmarks
Ardvreck Castle, situated by the waterfront, is a historic ruin dating back to around 1490 CE. The castle remains are easily accessible from two parking bays along the road and appear to be well-maintained despite their age. This location serves as an ideal spot for taking short walks and capturing picturesque photos of the surrounding scenery. Additionally, visitors can enjoy nearby waterfalls that are conveniently within reach.
The drive to Ardvreck castle offers spectacular views of beautiful mountains scenery... Plenty of wild deer so drive safely at night. It's a shame the castle is a ruin but is still worth visiting due to its location on the loch and waterfall that adjacent. Plenty of parking near by
Mark H — Google review
Large parking area provided just past the walkway. Tourists are encouraged not to park on the side of the road, and also not to climb onto the castle walls. Plenty areas to walk around for a variety of viewpoints. No cost to visit, so worth stopping by on a sunny day.

Poppy G — Google review
Quite a nice ruined castle close to the car park. I recommend parking at the marked car park, because otherwise you might have a small brook between you and the causeway to the castle.
Pavel D — Google review
Beautiful little ruined castle, mostly beautiful because of the setting, we were lucky and had a still day so the reflections from the loch were stunning. Definitely worth stopping.

Ardvreck Castle may be in ruins, but it’s full of character and history – and the setting is simply unforgettable. Nestled on the edge of Loch Assynt, the views of the surrounding mountains and water are absolutely stunning, making it one of the most picturesque castle ruins in the Highlands. There’s a haunting beauty to the place, with the crumbling tower standing alone against the dramatic landscape. It’s peaceful, uncrowded, and perfect for those who love history, photography, or just a quiet moment in nature. Well worth a stop if you’re exploring the NC500 or passing through Sutherland. A true hidden gem!
Mark C — Google review
Nice Scottish ruins to park up and take a walk. You can park in the car park which is free and located 2 minutes walk from the moat of the castle. It is possible to wade across to the island. There have been reports of the ghost of the lady of the castle who made a pact with the devil to marry him in exchange for saving her father’s castle. At the car park there are various information boards giving you the history of the site along with what wildlife can be spotted. All in all a great little stop

Sad really. When we arrived at this tucked away craft village every unit was closed except one which although not to our taste was excellent artwork. The other place open was the cafe specialising in hot chocolate which was welcome as the weather was awful.

It's hard to explain what to expect. It is full of art and crafts and food, presented in a Wicker Man set. It's quaint, interesting and a little anxiety provoking. It is very welcoming. The artists a business people all seem very friendly and chatty. The art is truly unique and fascinating. All made on site by the people who are isolated in the village for much of the year. It reminded me of the Shire in Lord of the Rings if you crossed it with Walking Dead, and a shanty Town. I like it.

Worth a visit to see art work from some of the people who live here. The place has an intersection history from being watchtowers in the war and you get a sense of his when visiting. There are artists of all sorts of media, a gorgeous potter included. I even got my hair cut by Philip who also has an art studio, a hunted house, holiday cottages and does massages too. The haircut was great and only £25 plus a tip and some decent conversation. The cocoa mountain chocolate shop is definitely with a visit on the same site for delicious palm oil free chocolates.

Balnakeil Beach – Peaceful and Wild Balnakeil Beach is one of those places that feels like it’s sitting right at the edge of the world. Surrounded by massive sand dunes and wide, open skies, it has a raw, peaceful beauty that’s hard to put into words. It’s quiet, calm, and feels wonderfully secluded — like you’ve discovered a secret spot miles away from everything. The beach stretches far, with soft sand and views that go on forever. Whether you're walking along the shore, climbing the dunes for a better view, or just sitting still and soaking it all in, there’s something really grounding about being there. It’s not busy, not noisy — just the sound of the wind, the sea, and the feeling of space. A perfect spot to pause, breathe, and appreciate the stunning simplicity of the Scottish coast. If you're in the area, don’t skip this one. It’s a beautiful, soul-soothing place that really stays with you.

Great little stop whilst in the Highlands or doing the NC500. Nice little local restaurant and local boat trip to see the wildlife (seals, eagles etc) just past the car park on the south side.

Incredible. We drove up to Kylesku from Aviemore and it was the most stunning drive. We visit the Highlands every year and each time brings new wonders. A little known viewing spot...if you're looking at the bridge head on from the car park, cross the road and walk a few feet over to the guard rail. Walk inside the rail and on the left there is a way to climb up the side of the hill, very short few steps. Views are spectacular.
Boxer G — Google review
Been across this bridge a bunch of times. But the area offers so many views and viewpoints that I've never actually stopped. Until this years. I parked at the northern carpark (I was the only one there that cloudy summer day) with wonderful views looking at the bridge, the valley, Loch a' Chairn Bhain and Loch Gleann Dubh. The bridge connects the latter two. It's a beautiful little spot - as there are so many. That's why I keep coming up here. There's a always some place you've missed, a new place to discover, a new walk to take...I just love the Highlands. Surely worth a stop, especially on a quiet day like we've got.
Alex H — Google review
Large parking areas by the bridge. Great views of the bridge sat in the middle of some fabulous scenery. I great place to stop and have a snack break and maybe even spot some wild life. Deer apparently favour the river crossing here too.

Kylesku Bridge – A Must-Stop on the NC500 Kylesku Bridge is one of those classic stops on the NC500 that really deserves a moment. It’s an iconic spot with beautiful views all around — mountains, water, and that sweeping curve of the bridge itself. You’ll definitely want to pull over for a photo or just to take it all in. There’s easy parking right next to the viewpoint, so it’s a super convenient stop along the route. The bridge was opened in 1984 and is a concrete box girder design, blending surprisingly well into the dramatic landscape. It crosses the Loch a’ Chàirn Bhàin and connects the tiny villages around this part of the north-west Highlands. It’s peaceful, scenic, and one of those places where you can just stand still for a moment and appreciate how special this drive really is. Definitely a must-see on your NC500 adventure.

The most beautiful beach even on a rainy day. Was so lucky to see highland cows. There also was a man hiking nude across the beach which was a surprise to myself but he was very friendly in telling me and another walker what sights were nearby :)

Stunning beach. Off the NC500 by about 5 miles so not as frequented. Had blue skies and clear green ocean all to ourselves then a few others arrived but not busy at all

Epic beach - off the beaten track. Short walk from the car park. Wonderful dunes, great option to walk to the headland in the middle of the beach at low tide for a wonderful full panorama. Amazing coloured rocks all along also. Highly recommended.

Great park up with a camper van, and a beautiful deserted beach, you feel it’s all yours.

One of Scotland's most beautiful beaches. It's a bit off the beat and track with a steep single track decent to the small car park where you'll find public loos, but I think they close in winter. We had a large motor home and it was fine getting in and out. The beach is a short but steep sandy walk from the car park, so if you have mobility issues, it's not very accessible.

Brilliant beach, plenty of car parking and toilets. The beach is fantastic to walk and play on, lots of small areas between rocks to shelter from the wind at times as well as plenty of open sand to run and play on. The water is clear and due to it being a flat bay area the kids could walk out into the water a fair distance yet still feel and be safe. Top place to visit, whether for a beautiful long stroll by yourself or with the family.

We stayed in the area for a few days. Just a short walk away. It's an impressive, long and wide beach. Besides the cool air you feel like being in the caribbean. Blue, green, turquoise water. Crystal clear. And one of the cleanest beaches you'll ever see. Even in summer it was pretty much deserted. Really only a handful of people. Quite surprising, but it's in a pretty remote area. There are some nice walks around and along the shore. Cross the small hill in the north to get to the equally nice (but smaller) Polin Beach. A wonderful place to be. To walk. To sunbathe. To have a picnic. Some dog-walkers were here too. There's space for everybody. Our Bulldog enjoyed her freedom very much as well. At the time we were here there was a good number of jellyfish washed ashore. Be aware in case you have kids or pets with. A fantastic, impressive beach. A hidden gem. One of the nicest beaches I've ever been to. And I've seen many.

Absolutely stunning! One of the most beautiful beaches in the world but beware, it might look like the caribean but even in summer the water was ice cold!!

The Achmelvich Beach Youth Hostel is a basic accommodation situated close to the shore. It provides shared cooking and washing facilities for its guests. The hostel's location is excellent, and visitors can enjoy the stunning scenery of Achmelvich Beach, which features light sandy beaches and blue waters that stand out in northern Scotland. Even though the water temperature remains cold, people engage in outdoor activities such as swimming and kayaking while wearing wetsuits to keep warm.
Lovely rooms, the YHA lady working there was lovely, the location was stunning! The facilities were clean and comfortable. Can’t fault it!

A peaceful and tranquil youth hostel. Open kitchen-diner area, well stocked for cooking and relaxing with a book. Bird table with finches galore from window view. Two showers - one electric with constant hot water, the other a tank and hot if timed well. Stayed in tight private twin room with space for our dog and his bed. Staff kind and helpful, making our duration as dog-friendly as possible. Access from modern car park area is a short climb, so care to be taken with luggage and those less mobile.

This is a really cozy, secluded little hostel in a super scenic spot on the Highlands coastline. There's a fantastic beach and a number of nice little walking trails around. The live-in staff were very kind and helpful throughout our stay (and they have a very sweet Border Collie, Skye), and the shared facilities felt very homey and comfortable. The rooms were nicely configured with each bunk bed in its own nook with a curtain for privacy.

The location is good, close to Achmelvich beach which is really and indescribably beautiful beach for me personally. Now I understand why people say Scottish beaches are beautiful! The good part about the room that you can have some privacy by closing the curtains in front of your bed. The mattress was uncomfortable. But overall the hostel was good!

Lovely youth hostel. Friendly staff, nice clean rooms and a good, well-stocked kitchen. Also really nice how they had towels for us, never seen that before. Really close to the beach, and it has some spectacular sun sets, I highly recommend. The wee breakfast was amazing too, so all round, 5 stars. Would definitely go back!!

Beautiful location ruined by extortionate pricing and hostile staff. Go elsewhere if you can!
