Incredible views. Interesting drive up the mountain. Had a wonderful day.

Ensure the day is not cloudy before visiting or you might not be able to see the caldera. However if there's clouds and thick fog you'll get a vision from buddhist hell meets Silent Hill, complete with piled stones, which is kind of spooky and cool in its own way.
Trilkk — Google review
This may be one of the most breathtaking places I have ever been in the world. Taking the cable car across the mountain top, and seeing the snow monsters appear from between the clouds was absolutely mind-blowingly beautiful! I cannot wait to return one day and relive this experience!

Severe snow storm. Did not see much. Only 2 with cameras brave the storm to take some pics. The rest sat at the restaurant.

Road Station Tendo Onsen is a delightful roadside stop nestled in an onsen town, perfect for travelers looking to unwind. This charming location features a soothing footbath where you can relax while enjoying unique ice cream flavors from the Tento la France Factory, including cherry and edamame. The area also boasts a lovely park with playground facilities and water play options during summer, making it ideal for families. While the food offerings are decent, they may not stand out compared to other experiences here.
Great to make a stop on the road. You can enjoy a delicious and local flavor ice cream while bathing your foot. The shop Tento la France Factory offers amazing ice cream, with original tastes. I tried the cherry flavor and edamame flavor. They also have pear, rice, almond, chocolate... flavors. Great!!! English available. Near by there is a big shop where you can buy local products.

This is my 2nd time to stay a night here. Very crowded. There is a 24 hours supermacket and very reasonable hot spa near here. (May 25th 2024) This roadside parking area is a very popular site for staying a night in a car. You will feel difficulty to find your parking space. (June 11th 2023)

They have a pretty nice and hot onsen for your feets here! The food is average considering the price though its good. A bakery can also be found here and the typical souvenir shops.

National reserve
Okama, also known as Zao Okama, is a stunning emerald volcanic crater lake located on the Zao Mountains in Japan. It can be reached by road, hiking trail, or ski lift and offers rewarding views to those who make it to the top. The lake is famous for its ever-changing colors depending on the angle of sunlight and is surrounded by unique alpine dicentra flowers.
Took a ropeway from the zao village to the top and hiked for about one hr to reach the top. The hike is easy and scenic. The weather got too foggy as we reached the peak near the crater. So the view was blocked. It’s also quite windy up there.
Hanupya N — Google review
We arrived Okama on May 2nd as goldenweek holiday in Japan! We can drive up to the top by paying a ticket (800 yen per 1 car) It’s colder than we think, and the Okama is still full of snow!
タツハラ — Google review
The caldera lake is much larger in real, and it really leaves an impression. The altitude of the carpark is 1771 metres, so the mountain air is still refreshingly cool in midsummer.
Eugene W — Google review
Took bus here from Yamagata. Took 2 hours on the bus. Not many buses come here. Popular tourist location. Good scenario. Volcano lake. Walk around. Shrine. Good views
SL Y — Google review
Fantastic experience visiting Okama. Parked at the visitor center entrance, with a fee of Y550. Took us ~2 hours to hike up to the peak and to see the stunning views. Along the way to the peak, you would already see amazing views of the Gokishinuma (5 colored pond) that was caused by volcanic activities in the past. Definitely recommend to go!
Ryan P — Google review
Okama looks absolutely gorgeous in the early to mid April period, when the snow is partially covering the surrounding slopes, partly showing the brown earth below. Under a blue sky, this 残雪 (Zansetsu) scene offer in my opinion one of the best view of Okama. These are photos were taken at 13/4/2024 after a 45min hike from the Zao Jizo Sancho Station 蔵王ロープウェイ 地蔵山頂駅. Something to take note of: (1) the last descending cable car leave at 4:45pm at this time of the year, (2) The trails are mostly covered under loose melting snow, those trail without snow are very muddy. Although I did it with just a gaiter and not fully waterproof shoe, I would strongly suggest good waterproof shoe, gaiter, snowshoe or trekking pole. (3) You can find the gps route and more hiking info from Yamap. (4) These photos were shot at the viewpoint just to the east of Kumanodake 熊野岳 which I think offer better scenery at this time of year compared to the more southern viewpoints.
Wei P — Google review
I’ve skied at Zao several times, but this was my first summer visit. I have always wanted to hike and see Okama, and I would recommend this spot if you can. We drove up in a personal vehicle, but there are hiking trails and a chair lift a bit below the uppermost parking lot if you’re not driving. We also saw some cyclists biking up! There are many great hikes around, and of course, you can see the famous snow monsters without their snow!
Mary — Google review
It's a great place to visit. Emerald lake in volcano crater looks so magic.Amazing view from top of mountain. But Weather may be really unpredictable. So be aware about it and ready for any case. There are many ways to reach the place:by car, by free shuttle, by rope way or hiking. Parking place usually gets full very quickly,it's better to come before 10am. Hiking courses to the Okama crater are very good for any age and conditions. Never have try so enjoyable course.

Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a charming mountain village near Sendai city, offering natural hot springs and stunning winter scenery. The area is known for its abundant snowfall, creating a picturesque landscape with snow-covered trees and unique ice sculptures. As the oldest hot spring in the Tohoku Region, Zao Hot Spring provides an authentic experience of traditional Japan amidst nature and old villages. Visitors can enjoy skiing on slopes suitable for all skill levels and then relax in outdoor hot springs at a reasonable price.
visited Zao Onsen Ski Resort and went all the way up to the top – it was freezing, but absolutely worth it. The wind was cold, snow all around, and everything was covered in a soft white mist that made the whole place feel almost magical. Even though I couldn’t stay outside for too long, the views and atmosphere were beautiful and unforgettable. If you don’t mind the cold, it’s definitely a spot you should experience at least once.

A frustrating experience at this open ski area. It’s easy to get lost, and I somehow managed to lose my cell phone in the process. There are too many flat areas where you’re forced to take off your snowboard and walk—definitely not ideal. The weather didn’t help, and to top it off, there were way too many non-skiers taking the cable car up just for photos, blocking the way for those of us trying to actually ski. Not the best place for serious snow sports enthusiasts!
Dave H — Google review
A Paradise of Snow Monsters and Winter Adventures If you’re traveling to Yamagata in winter, Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a must-visit destination. The resort offers a diverse range of courses for all levels from gentle slopes to tight tree runs Get into the Zao Rope Way Sanrokusen for Juhyo Kogen station where you can have some fun with the snow. From Juhyo Kogen Station get into the Zao Rope Way Sanchosen and you will reach to the top(around 1661m). In you way you can see the Snow Monsters JFYI: there might be strong winds at the top so make sure to be prepared with proper wears and shoes. For skiers/snowboarders: the resort is huge and it’s easy to get lost. So have a course map with you. For snowboards : there are lots of flat areas where you have to remove your snowboard and walk for the next lift. Access: Get a bus from Yamagata Station to Zao Onsen. A one way ticket will cost around 1200Yen

The resort is incredible. 🎿 It has several slopes of varying difficulty so you can learn or try somersaults. The staff's attention is unbeatable. Long live Japan ♥️ ❄️ ⛄️

Best experience in Japan. You have to check the weather first. On a fine day, the monster are visible and you can play with snow. We took the ropeway. There are 2 station on the way. Last one is the main spot to see the mighty snow monster. There is also ski area and onsen area. Ropeway round trip price is around 4200 yen. At night there are some illumination also. It was freezing ❄️ cold. Must wear snow boots and take heat patch. It will helpful to survive 😅. Once in a life time experience as Yamagata has one of the highest snowfall area. For ski, pre booking is must. There are restaurant on the last stop. On the first floor, one suvenior shop is there. Vending machine is available to buy hot drinks. Washroom facilities are also in good condition. 10/10 ( as i get the perfect views and nice weather ) in

Discover a hidden gem of a ski resort that offers an extraordinary experience! This resort is a paradise for ski enthusiasts who appreciate pristine snow conditions, breathtaking scenic views, and unique local features. The ski tracks are beautifully maintained, nestled among majestic snow-covered trees, and the resort’s distinctive tree monsters add a whimsical charm to the landscape. Unlike the busier and more commercialized ski destinations, this resort provides a tranquil escape, ensuring that the slopes are less crowded and the overall experience is more intimate. Its budget-friendly nature, compared to more popular resorts like Niseko, makes it an excellent choice for those seeking value without compromising on quality. A useful tip for future visitors: remember to carry cash, as many of the cozy, on-site restaurants prefer it over card payments. While the resort boasts an ample number of ski coaches, travelers should be aware that English communication may be limited. Despite this, the friendly and accommodating staff ensures a welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone. Overall, if you’re in search of an authentic ski getaway where you can connect with the essence of winter sports in a serene and picturesque setting, this resort is an unbeatable choice. Don’t miss out on this less-trodden winter wonderland!
Sonia S — Google review
This a great ski resort, especially for beginners and sightseeing. There are some advanced hills, but not many so this isn't the place to come for big thrills. The beginner slopes are great for learning though! There's a lot of long, simple runs. Also, a lift ticket isn't much more expensive than a ropeway ticket so if you want to see the snow monsters you might as well go skiing too. Only real complaint is some awkward flat/uphill spots here and there that required me to take off my skis and walk a couple times.
Michael M — Google review
Exceptionally beautiful ski/board course. The trees look magical covered in snow. Has several beginner areas. The panoramic route through the snow monsters is amazing. Although there are a lot of flat areas in between. Free shuttle Buses run between the gondolas till evening. Gondolas stop operating a bit early so plan otherwise. You can take a gondola to the top with a separate ticket as well. Illumination was cancelled the night i went due to bad weather.

Zao Ropeway Zao Sanroku Station

Mountain cable car
Transportation
Tramways
Zao Ropeway Zao Sanroku Station is a year-round cable car located at a ski resort, offering breathtaking scenic views and access to a mountaintop restaurant. The area is famous for the Juhyo, or snow monsters of Zao, which are a rare natural wonder.
I came in the afternoon after the peak hours, barely anyone in the queue and i was able to get into the cable car pretty quickly. I saw the morning queue and i decided to spend my first half of the day snowboarding on the other side of the mountain/entrance. I recommend spending the morning skiing/ snowboarding on the otherside and come in the afternoon after all the big groups of tourists for sightseeing have left for the day. Totally worth it, the view was amazing and out of this world. Really the highlight of my trip. If you are an expert, it would be an amazing experience to ski/ snowboard from the top of the mountain along with the snow monsters. I will definitely come again!!
Naomi A — Google review
We got there around 3pm, and there were tons of parking spots! The price was a bit steep, and I wish they could show me the cams from the second section. I spent 2000 yen just to get there, and I only stayed for 5 minutes because I couldn’t see much up there. The photos are from the first section, and you can see how foggy it is in my other review.
Shelley L — Google review
Here is my objective review of the Zao Ropeway Juhyo experience, 4/5, for obvious reason - the freaking queue time! We took the 7am plus bus from Yamagata station (be sure to queue early from there to make sure you get a seat on the bus!). You need to buy a ticket from the bus ticket counter, 2,400 yen for round-trip. It takes 40 minutes to reach here. Once reached, it'll be an easy 10 mins walk to reach there at 8:30am. This is a weekday, so we were genuinely surprised that the queue is at least 100 metres long. There was first a queue to purchase tickets, then another queue to the ropeway. The first part of the ropeway was particularly slow. There is only one small carriage up and down, ONE carriage! No wonder it takes forever to get everyone up. It took us probably 1.5 hours for our turn, bear in mind we reach at opening time. A lot of the tour group were lucky enough to secure priority lane (we tried to get the online ticket, but it was sold out very quickly every day). When we got in, we got squeeze packed like sardines, and the worker in charge will be sure to fill the carriage to the brim. So I must say the ingress experience was extremely poor, which is not what I'd expect from Japanese operators. Once we're up to the midway station, the experience gets better, and the second section of the ropeway is defined more enjoyable. Take us almost no queue to get up this time. The view from there onwards is magical. To know that Juhyo is a rare natural occurrence that happens only in certain areas in Tohoku makes it extra special. Also, I felt lucky to experience the dry snow at the top of the mountain. Saw a lot of skiers there. If I were to back here, I'd love to ski here. I think the view at the top compensated the terrible experience at first, but there is surely way to make it better. The ticket was very pricey, and the wait is just unjustifiable. It's time for an upgrade on the first section ropeway, for sure. For the view and Johyu experience, I'd recommend it, but you just have to come early and manage your expectations at the start. It took us 4 hours in total for this experience, and we made it in time to leave at 12 and head to Ginzan onsen next.
Louis L — Google review
Visited Zao Ropeway (Zao Sanroku Station) on a weekday in mid-February, and despite it not being the weekend, the queue was still very long. With so many tourists visiting to see the famous snow monsters, the wait time was almost an hour. However, once I got on the ropeway, it was absolutely worth it. The ride up offered stunning views of the snow-covered mountains, and at the top, the snow monsters (frozen trees) looked surreal—like something out of a fantasy world. The scenery alone made the long wait worthwhile.
Paul A — Google review
It really depends on the weather. During my visit; wind is too strong and snow are too heavy. Cant really enjoy the view and see the snowy trees. When we are at the top with king zao, wind is super strong and everyone out there had a frozen damage on our face. Nevertheless, great experience!
Wesley W — Google review
I went during early autumn so nothing much to see. I went to the highest station and it was rainy and misty so nothing much to see as well. So do consider the weather before you purchase the ticket. The weather got clearer when at the first station. There is a viewing point around 5min walk from the station.
Ai — Google review
Very poor operation. We didnt make it to the elevator because the waiting queue up to 2 hrs and our tour time didnt allow more time to wait. (we have 3 hours here but cant make it) If you want to see frosted trees there, make sure that you can spend a whole day in this area. DONT BOOK IT IN A TOUR, time is very risky.
Kiều V — Google review
Great season to look at the snow monsters in February. The view at the mountains was simply amazing! Arrived at around 11am, we were able to get in cable car with a short queue of around 15-20 minutes. Tickets were bought on site from a vending machine. We were lucky enough to go straight up to mountain top to see snow monsters thanks to the weather. It was freezing cold up there with only -8 degrees. But the view was magnificent. Note: keep the cable car tickets with you all the time, you will need it for 2 cable car sections up the mountain and return

Hanamiyama Park

Nature & Parks
Hanamiyama Park is a picturesque suburban mountain park famous for its vibrant seasonal floral displays and stunning sakura cherry blossoms. Located in Fukushima, the park offers breathtaking landscapes during spring and autumn. Visitors can explore the easy mountain paths adorned with pink plum and cherry blossoms while enjoying views of snow-covered mountains in the distance. Additionally, the park features various flower varieties, making it an enjoyable destination throughout spring and summer. Shuttle buses are available from Fukushima Station to reach the park easily.
Date of enjoyment: 12/4/25 Came here on a weekend and it was madness, but organised chaos. We can’t park in the usual car parks, we had to go to another carpark ( free of charge) which is well directed and signed, then pay for a ticket 500 yen and catch a bus to visit hanamiyama park from the car park which is a short 10min bus ride. Do come early and once you arrive at the park, the walk towards all the plantations is stunning and it’s all maintained by locals. There were heaps of varieties of Sakura and they were in full bloom, truly a stunning sight and hayfever at its max. We decided to walk the longest trek which took roughly 60mins and rewarded with the view at the mountain top of Fukushima city. The walk back down the hill was also pleasant and there was a matsuri food stalls at the end of it all, you can spend about 2-3 hours at this venue which is great value for a 500yen ticket.
Jay C — Google review
Nice park. Free entry. Was under maintenance during my visit. The coloured tracks are easy to follow, but if you head off towards the "observatory" you'll likely not see much else. I walked for a couple of hours following poorly marked signed which lead nowhere in particular. Nice and peaceful, but with a lot of tree cover blocking most of the views.
Jesse T — Google review
There are not many flowers in the summer time. But tree trails and the chirping cicadas makes u embrace the natural environment. Three are 30, 45, 60 mins courses. We took the 60 one. It’s easy to walk. But seems not well maintained, may cause by the off season.
C J — Google review
We visited on a rainy day but the rain cleared and we got to see all the wonderful blossoms (16th April). We did the 60 minute walking loop, there is a 30 and a 45 minute loop too. I enjoyed the 60 minute loop as you get a beautiful view from the top of the hill. As it was a rainy day it was not busy, but I can imagine it gets very busy.
Lily G — Google review
Amazing place! There are several varieties of flowers beyond cherry blossoms, so the park can be enjoyed throughout a long time during spring (also summer when it's hydrangea season). Since the name of the park suggests it is a mountain, so expect some hiking. The walk to the summit may take around one hour (a bit longer if you stop to admire the flowers and take some pictures). The view from the top is really nice. You're able to appreciate Fukushima city from above while surrounded by flowers. No fees are needed to enter the park. Went there on the 6th of April 2024.
A R — Google review
I went there during the full cherry blossom bloom on April 10, 2025. I spent half a day there, and it was bursting with vibrant colors—not just pink! Highly recommended!
Putida P — Google review
Visited on Tuesday 8 April 2025. Beautiful weather in the morning for the astounding views. We did the 60min course which was not a problem for those without walking issues. Only one slightly short steep slope downhill towards the last part. They had some walking poles at the start of the course. There was quite a Q at the bus stop. So since there were 3 of us, we took a taxi (¥1800 per trip) from the Fukushima East exit. We showed them the pamphlet which we took from the Tourist Office at Fukushima station. The bus is ¥500 return. It was full bloom during our visit. Praise the Lord.
Lee E — Google review
Really enjoyed the park and festivities. Quite crowded. However there is a hill to the left when looking at hanamiyama that has just as many if not more flowers and less crowds. Enjoyed that more even though both were great. Parking was really far away and you’re charged 500¥ pp for the return bus but it was well organised and caused little delay. Expected with crowds

Takahata Winery is a contemporary vineyard situated near a riverbank, surrounded by vineyards. Guests can enjoy wine tastings made from locally produced Japanese grapes, which offer distinct qualities compared to imported varieties. The winery also features an onsite cafe and shop where visitors can purchase unique gifts. Although the information provided on the establishment may be limited in English, guests have praised the ice cream with a 1.7% alcohol content for its delicious taste.
Definitely worth visiting. Rather nice wines. Unfortunately, could not sample as I was driving, but procured a box of selected wines which I thoroughly enjoyed upon arriving home. Wish there would be a selection of fresh wines in large volumes say 3-5l boxes - that would definitely be a cherry on top! Thank you for the hospitality. Will definitely be back!

Those interested in wine, this will be the right place for you. They have wine that are made from Japan produced grapes which have a different quality compared to imported grapes directly from overseas and imported grapes grown in Japan. I was awesome by this interesting fact and had the chance to taste the wines. It is definitely delicious!!! While getting some wine, there are also a lot of gift that can be brought from there.

I am a great fan of Takahata winery and had the privilege of visiting the winery in person from Tokyo. The experience was less than what I expected. They had wine tasting but it was by each station. It was almost like food tasting in a Japanese supermarket. Disappointing. They should have western winery style whereby a large counter is set up and customers can stand in a good number and listen to the wine talk from the staff and taste all wines at the one counter. Subpar overall in experience. Good wine though. One star of for experience and four stars on the wine.

Mount Yudono

Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Mount Yudono is one of the three sacred mountains known as Dewa Sanzan, along with Mount Haguro and Mount Gassan. These mountains hold great spiritual significance for Shugendo monks who practice mountain worship. The hiking trail to Mount Yudono takes you through a dense cedar forest and past ancient shrines, leading to sweeping views from the peak. The area also features the iconic five-storied pagoda Goju-to, which dates back to 937 AD.
A beautiful mountain that is part of what is known as the Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa in Yamagata Prefecture. Mt. Yudono is known as the mountain of rebirth and has a very special shrine at its peak that is forbidden to talk about or speak about in detail. Though if you would like to learn more, The Hidden Japan, a Yamagata travel website has an excellent article on Mt. Yudono where you can learn more.

(Translated by Google) It was my first time there. I won't say much because photography is not allowed and I am not allowed to talk about what happens in the sacred area, but walking barefoot around the shrine where the hot springs are flowing after being purified is a transcendental experience that makes it hard to believe that it is real life. It's everyday life. It was endearing that the priest who performed the exorcism was secretly looking at his smartphone, lol, but thanks to him giving blessings during the exorcism, the extraordinary story becomes much more dramatic. It's one of the world's most powerful power spots, and even though you've just stopped by to feel like a tourist spot, you'll feel like you've actually arrived at the destination of your trip. (Translated by Google) The admission fee (purification fee) to Mt. Yudono is 500 yen. You must go barefoot, bow your head to receive a prayer, rub a piece of paper cut into the shape of a human over your entire body, then let it flow into the waterway to purify yourself. Then, walk the gentle stone steps to the sacred object for about 5 minutes. At the worship area to the left of the sacred object, you can pray to the ocean and mountains to the west. The entire worship takes about 30 minutes. Do not drink the flowing hot spring water. It is a highly acidic, iron-sulfur-rich hot spring. There is a free foot bath just before the exit on your way back. A 6km bus ride to the main shrine of Yudono-san Shrine costs 400 yen round trip and 200 yen one way. Private cars are not permitted. The mountain is closed during the winter (early November to late May) due to snow. (Translated by Google) It's a very rugged and dignified place. The entire mountain and its sacred object are sacred grounds. I had the audacity to traverse it from Mt. Gassan. The moss makes it a place where people can fall. I managed to get down without falling, but it's sacred grounds, so photography is strictly prohibited. Personally, I think that if you're traversing from Mt. Gassan, photography is completely prohibited from around the newly built restrooms. My companion took photos at the ladder. He had a sore lower back by the time we arrived at Mt. Yudono. I asked him if he'd taken any photos, and he said he'd taken several at several points. Even though it wasn't written that it was prohibited from this point, I told him that it would be a good idea to delete the photos, and later, the pain miraculously subsided... It's a place where such mysterious things could happen. Uesugi Shrine, also known as Uesugi Jinja, was established in 1871 to honor the legendary Sengoku era shogun Kenshin Uesugi. This shrine is a significant site in Yonezawa and attracts visitors year-round who come to pray for various blessings such as prosperity and the well-being of newborns. The serene surroundings of the shrine create a peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal place for contemplation and leisurely walks.
I visited Uesugi Jinja when visiting Yonezawa and I definitely would recommend it to any visitors! This temple was peaceful to walk through and take in the beautiful nature surrounding it. The temple was quiet and not crowded. Around the temple was a beautiful river the many coi fish that locals were feeding with bread. This was something so special and pure to witness. This temple sold Goshuinchou and omamoris.

Grandeco Snow Resort is a small skiing area known for its high-quality snow and tree-lined trails suitable for beginners. It's located about 4 hours from Tokyo by car, behind Mt Bandai, offering a backcountry experience with excellent snow conditions. The resort provides amenities such as equipment rental, kids' play area, and clean restrooms. Visitors can also enjoy activities like snowboarding and skiing in the winter season or appreciate the beauty of momiji in autumn.
Truly a hidden paradise. If this is discovered by tourists for sure this will be popular in no time like the ones in Niseko and Myoko Kogen which are more popular. The resort is a haven for winter enthusiasts, offering a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. The slopes were well-maintained and varied, catering to all skill levels—from gentle beginner runs to thrilling black diamond trails. The lift system was efficient, with minimal wait times, even during peak hours. My family had a lesson from a very friendly instructor , although not very well spoken in English was very kind, patient and knowledgeable. The gondola ride was breathtaking and 1 day pass is only 2000Y. The ski lift passes are also value for money. It has slopes for beginners, intermediate and advanced. Has restaurant at the top and at the base. All staff are very friendly and powdered snow is like no other. It also has a great kids fun area and guests from en resort hotel can get a free pickup ride to and from the resort. Only 30mins away from Inawashiro Hotel and the resort offers public bus from both Inawashiro Station and Koriyama station for a minimal fee. for those who drive, it has ample parking space- thus if you have your own suit and gear, all u need to worry is to buy a 1day pass for a small fee with discounts for different age categories. The resort itself is stunning, nestled amidst breathtaking mountain scenery. The cozy lodges provided the perfect retreat after a long day on the slopes, with roaring fireplaces and panoramic views of the snow-covered peaks. The on-site restaurants offered delicious food, with hearty meals and gourmet hot chocolate that hit the spot after the cold.

Not a crowded resort, food court is spacious, venues selling snacks, Baskin Robbins ice cream, and crepes. Ski rental and ski shop available. Shuttle bus pick up/ drop off from hotel. Both lift and gondola take you to the top, and another lift to the highest point for advanced skiers.

4hours from Tokyo by car but we’ll worth it! It is behind Mt Bandai about 20km and the last few km’s are very deep in the backcountry…but the snow is that much better! Snow Scoots and Snow Moto’s are 100% welcome here. They even rent the latest Snow Moto models with several board options. View my pic to see the pricing. They even had one with the Shark Super carving board! Only downside is that the Gondala is very small and old. It was a real challenge to get my ride inside and they even stopped the Gondala to allow me enough time to squeeze in. So I only tried this once…there were 2 hi-speed covered quad lifts that were just as fast, so I did not miss out. This is a Tokyu Resort and the hotel was reasonably priced with a Onsen/spa. Next time I will stay here to enjoy the great snow!

Sazaedo Temple

Sazae Temple, constructed in 1796, boasts a one-of-a-kind wooden structure with a double-helix design and spiral staircase. The temple is renowned for its intricate beauty and unique architecture. Visitors can admire the nametags of pilgrims from centuries past adorning the walls and ceilings. Despite time constraints, exploring the temple grounds offers a serene experience amidst towering trees and a nearby river.
While visually Sazae Temple does not seem as grand, big or tall as many other places of worship in Japan, but its a place that packs so much amazing stories and history into a tiny space. Its totally worth paying the area a visit and for adults a simple 400 yen to walk into the temple where its double helix structure is one-of-a-kind. By walking in a single direction, you will not cross path with anyone else and its pretty-mind-blowing how this architecture can be accomplished; even our modern wonders thanks to technology does not really sit in the same league as what Sazae Temple offers. Within the area is also the location where you can learn about the Byakkotai, the "White Tigers" that performed the ultimate sacrifice as an act of loyalty to their masters which even inspired Germany and Italy to gift commemorative pillars and stone plagues as a declaration and recognition of the spirits of the 19 warriors. Sounds very complex, but you just come and slowly learn about them, very worth it :)

Date of enjoyment: 11/4/25 There’s a charge to go enter the temple but well worth it, the architecture and design is simply breath taking. This is an all wooden structure every step has a squeak in the wooden structure and the helix spiral separates the direction of heading so that people going up will not see the people heading down. The centre beam is also exposed and showing the amazing engineering that when wood is well used can withhold so much weight. Allow a good 45mins here as there is a souvenir shop to explore as well.

Sazae is turban shell in English. The building looks like it. We visited here as we heard the building has a very special style. It was fairly crowded. The entrance fee is 400 yen. It's worthwhile to go in to it. There's no steps but a gradual slope to the top. There are a dome covered with mysterious stickers. It's worth to visit.

Sazae Temple is a quiet and very unique temple in the Aizu area, and well worth a short visit if you are interested in history and architecture. The wooden hall was built in 1796 and features a rare double helix structure inside, with a spiral staircase that takes you up and around in a continuous loop. Walking through it feels unlike any other temple experience. The interior walls and ceilings are covered with name tags and wooden plaques left by pilgrims over the centuries. This gives the whole space a very personal and spiritual feeling, as if it is filled with stories, prayers, and memories from generations past. It is simple, but deeply atmospheric. The temple is surrounded by tall trees and close to a river, which adds to the sense of peace and seclusion. It is not a large or crowded site, which makes it a nice contrast to busier tourist spots. A very calming place to pause, reflect, and appreciate a different side of Japanese temple culture.

It was quite different from other temples. Because people walk up one way, and one-way down, no crossing each other when walking on the staircase. There are quite a lot of school kids during werkdays. Be prepared to wait for a big group of students. There are no stamps to collect at this temple.

We paid 400JPY to enter and it was well worth it. Quick visit but amazing wooden architecture and construction. Lots of reading and viewing to do inside too. The up and down are seperate (e.g. one way) and surprised us.

Not a large structure, but really unique design and worth the visit. Entry cost Y400, and you can go up one side of the double-helix, cross over the center, and come down the other side.

Local history museum
Nestled near Tsuruga Castle, Aizu Bukeyashiki is a captivating destination for those intrigued by samurai history and culture. This site was once the residence of Saigo Tanomo, a prominent figure in the Aizu clan who oversaw a vast number of vassals. Although the original mansion was destroyed during the Boshin War in 1868, it has been meticulously reconstructed to showcase its historical significance.
Amazing piece of history. I did multiple painting experiences and walked around in the snow. Plenty of English explanations available, and nice staff.
Wren M — Google review
The site is bigger than it looks. The biggest area is the mansion, and you can walk all around and feel how it must have been like to live there (complete with the occasional creepy mannequin). There's also a government building that was relocated here, several activities for kids, and a really big souvenir store. Lots of parking and bathrooms.

Amazing place that used to be the residence of a high level samurai. You get the visit the estate and go into some of the rooms. The place is teeming it’s history some of it a bit gruesome like the room where the wife and her followers committed suicide to free their lord to go fight the Boshin rebellion. Worth visiting
Nicolas K — Google review
For me, it is a photogenic place. The scenery of the mountains of Aizu and samurai residences resonates with me. Of course, you can learn about the history of Aizu and the tragedy of the Aizu clan. Unfortunately, explanations of the exhibits are mostly in Japanese, which is difficult for foreigners to understand. It is a 10-minute walk from Higashiyama Onsen, so it is recommended to visit before or after going to the Onsen. The following is the description of the pamphlet in English. What is the Aizu Bukeyashiki? In the Edo Period, Aizu was a symbolic samurai town that supported the Tokugawa shogunate. However, in the second half of the 19th century, the Aizu clan became caught up in the maelstrom of the Boshin War, a civil war that broke out during Japan's transition from the feudal system to an emperor system. Before long, the castle town of Aizu was exposed to the flames of war, and the Bukeyashiki was almost completely destroyed by fire. The people of Aizu, lamenting this, took the finding of drawings of the chief retainer's residence (SAIGO Tanomo's residence) as an opportunity for the basis of thorough background research, and planned a restoration. In 1975, the present day "Aizu Bukeyashiki" was completed, including period buildings such as the historical archive, tearoom, and administrative headquarters. Experience for yourself the historical culture of the samurai era. On the premises, there is a restaurant and souvenir shop, and you can also enjoy painting folk crafts and trying archery.

Rich in history, very well laid out, easy to know the route with well placed signs, good plaques explaining what different things are, and a very nice gift shop at the end. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Much better than the castle.

Beautiful historic grounds in Aizuwakamatsu! When you purchase a ticket to go inside you are greeted by wonderful staff and a nice warm rice sweet drink which is great during the winter season! From there it's a self guided tour through the historic samurai residence filled with great history and exhibits! I definitely recommend especially if you're taking the tour bus route!
Richard N — Google review
Aizu Bukeyashiki is a beautifully reconstructed samurai residence that immerses you in the daily life of a high-ranking samurai family during the Edo period. Each room tells a story—from political meetings to family rituals—and the attention to historical detail is remarkable. The residence is spacious, peaceful, and surrounded by nature, offering a powerful contrast to the tragic fate that awaited many Aizu samurai. Walking through the house feels like stepping back in time. It’s an unforgettable experience for anyone interested in the depth and dignity of samurai heritage.

The flower fields look completely different in a week, so I thought it would be best to check the local website before heading there. The view of Kitakata in the background was also beautiful, but I couldn't get a good photo with my old smartphone. To ensure the ski resort's survival, they're experimenting with beekeeping and accepting hometown tax donations. In midsummer, I enjoyed meals at the ski resort's rest house and shaved ice, ice cream, and frozen fruit from a food truck. (Translated by Google) I went there on August 27, 2019. It seems that the sunflowers are blooming late this year, so you can still enjoy them above the mountain hut Kurara, where the second parking lot is located. I couldn't see them during the rape blossom season because the season was off, so this time was great. But the sunflowers all face the same direction, which is amazing. Depending on the angle you look at them from, you'll end up behind the sunflowers, and feel like they're all looking away from you. It seems to get crowded on weekends, but I recommend going on weekdays, as you can easily find a parking space. It's amazing that the contribution fee is only 200 yen. I'd definitely like to go see them again next year. Tsuruga Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Tsuruga Castle, also known as Aizu-Wakamatsu Castle or Tsurugajo, is a concrete replica of a 14th-century fortress that holds great historical significance. Originally built in 1384 by the Ashina clan, it became famous for its role in the 1860s Boshin War, where it earned the title "The Impregnable Castle" after withstanding a month-long siege.
Great castle visit! Easy access and very visible assistance from staff all over the location. They seem to be putting a lot of effort into helping foreign tourists. I saw a foreign staffer at the info booth (he had excellent Japanese too from what I heard) and a good amount of English signage for the various exhibits in the castle. As of now, there's even a quick survey that foreigners can take to get a small gift with their visit. The castle itself does a great job of explaining the history of the castle and the area. You can really get a sense of how important the castle was if you take your time to read through what they have prepared. If you do so, you'll leave with a good sense of why the city decided to rebuild the castle and honor those who fought in the past.
Roland C — Google review
I visited Tsuruga Castle early in the morning, and it was a wonderful experience. With the soft morning light shining from the front, the castle looked especially striking and made for beautiful photos without harsh shadows. The entire park area around the castle is very well maintained, with clean paths and lush greenery that make walking around pleasant and relaxing. There is a calm atmosphere at that time of day, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without crowds. It’s not only a historic landmark but also a peaceful place to start the day. Highly recommended for photography and a quiet stroll.

I heard this is the place that must be visited, so I did. The entrance fee is $520 including the entry to both the castle tower and the tea room. The view was great from the top floor of the castle. If you are a Japanese history buff, this should be interesting. There're well detailed documents about not only a tragedy about the youth squad who fought against the new Meiji government army but also the history of this area in general. They were quite educational. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't great when I visited it...

We visited Tsuruga Castle in Aizuwakamatsu and it was one of the highlights of our time in the Aizu region. Although the castle is a reconstruction of a 14th century fortress, it is very well done and gives a strong sense of the history and importance of the site. Tsuruga Castle played a key role in the Boshin War and was once known as “The Impregnable Castle” after withstanding a month-long siege, which makes walking through its grounds even more meaningful. The interior has been converted into a museum with exhibits on samurai culture, the Boshin War, and the local history of Aizu. The displays are well presented and give good context, even for visitors who may not be familiar with Japanese history. At the top of the castle keep, there is an observation deck with panoramic views over the city and surrounding hills. We even managed to spot our hotel, Onyado Toho, in the distance, which was a fun surprise. I also recommend buying a ticket that includes matcha at the historic tea house within the grounds. It is a peaceful way to enjoy the setting and take in the atmosphere. Overall, Tsuruga Castle is a must-visit for anyone interested in Japanese castles, history, or simply beautiful views.
Daddydrives — Google review
It’s a rebuilt castle that only looks and feels like a castle from the outside. Inside it’s basically a museum that explains the history of the castle and of the region. Although the museum is very well done they could do much more in terms of having more English available on the walls. When we visited in the summer heat we did appreciate the air conditioning inside. If you’re looking for the authentic Japanese castle experience- this isn’t the one:
Matan K — Google review
Most of the original castle no longer stands, but a lot of work has been done to restore it for visitors. The main keep is more of a museum about feudal life and the historical events around the Meiji Restoration. There is an outer tower that's part of the original castle and the ticket (Y520) also gives admission to the tea house/garden (you can pay extra to have tea and a snack there). The surrounding grounds are well maintained and it wasn't too crowded.
Grant M — Google review
Wonderful morning out. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the castle. If you’re into history I would highly recommend. Even if you’re not it is still beautiful to visit.
Danni S — Google review
Tsurugajo Castle is beautiful and sits right in the middle of Aizuwakamatsu with a cute little park around it. We didn’t go inside as we’d heard the interior wasn’t as impressive as the outside. Compared to other castles like Osaka Castle, it’s a bit less striking, but still definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Additionally, the food at the restaurant is remarkably tasty and made from very fresh ingredients.

Roadside Station Atsumi Sharin is located on National Route 7. For those coming from Niigata, it is the first roadside station after exiting the expressway and passing through Sasagawa Nagare into Yamagata Prefecture. Shibata Castle Ruins, located in Shibata City, is a well-preserved ancient flatland-style castle that offers visitors a glimpse into Japan's history. Roadside station Aga-no-sato

Mentioned on
1 list
Toll road rest stop
Visitor Centers
Nestled amidst the stunning mountains of Aga Town, Roadside Station Aga-no-sato is a delightful hub for travelers seeking local experiences. This charming station offers an array of attractions, including delicious rice balls made from the renowned Koshihikari rice and unique specialty products that showcase the region's bounty. Visitors can also embark on scenic boat cruises along the Agano River right from this location. Recently, I revisited this vibrant spot and was pleasantly surprised by its transformation.
(Translated by Google) Immediately upon entering the building is the local products section, and to the left is the food court. In the back, there's a hardware store and a ticket counter for the sightseeing boat. There's also a statue of Shoki Daimyojin, and there's a donation box. You can purchase various fortune-telling slips for 100 yen and various amulets for 200 yen. From the observation deck on the second floor, you can get a panoramic view of the Agano River. The food court serves ramen and other dishes, as well as rice balls. Hamburgers are also sold on weekends. The souvenir corner also sells the delicacy Kanose medaka. Unlike locust tsukudani, this has a crispy texture and is seasoned with soy sauce. Recommended ways to eat it include mixing it with grated daikon radish or adding it to ochazuke (rice with tea). It's a delicious dish best enjoyed with a salty seasoning. (Translated by Google) I visited for the Hokuriku Roadside Station Stamp Rally. Aganosato, number 10 in Niigata. As a roadside station where you can take a sightseeing boat, it is a place with a unique selling point. The product hall sold products related to "Agano Pickles" and "Yasuda Milk". I was having a hard time deciding what to buy as they also had Murakami Beef, but in the end I bought Okuaga Okoge Senbei, which is said to be the most popular item. It is apparently a product exclusive to Roadside Station Aganosato. I haven't tried it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. You can buy various fortune slips for 100 yen, and various charms for 200 yen. From the observation deck on the second floor, you can get a panoramic view of the Agano River, and you can also see the sightseeing boats that are being accepted here. There are plenty of stores selling souvenirs and hardware, and the restaurant specializes in rice🍙 The ramen was delicious, and a great memory of the trip😊 It's a really fun roadside station♪ (Original)

I think it's just the right facility for pre-school children. I had a great time there with my grandchildren. This roadside station is also the boarding point for the Agano River Line sightseeing boat, and you can head over the bank to the Agano River from a door at the back of the facility and onto the pier. The facility also has a local products corner and a food court-style restaurant, where Niigata's delicious rice balls and ramen are popular. The limited-edition Aga Burger is also intriguing. There is also a child-sized soft serve ice cream option, which was adorable. I highly recommend stopping by. Minato Marche Pier Bandai is a lively indoor venue featuring stalls offering fresh, locally-sourced seafood, meat, and produce. Visitors can enjoy a variety of eateries, cafes, and restaurants alongside wholesalers and fishmongers. This seafood mecca is the perfect place to sample Niigata's famous specialties such as sushi from Sado Island and Niigata-style miso ramen.
An excellent place to enjoy the afternoon, with open air dining seats and fresh seafood. The atmosphere is very lively, and you can purchase food from all the shops and enjoy them in the free seating area.

What could be better in a sunny day sitting outside, enjoy a fresh breath from the sea and have your lunch followed by freshly brewed coffee with home made sweets? I cannot explain how grateful I was to have this during my trip to Niigata. The best time of the day. This market offers a variety of food, everyone could time something no doubt.

I went there on 8/4 ( Friday ), the day after Nagaoka Matsuri. The opening time is 1030am and I arrived on 1045am. There was a long queue at that time. After the queue, I took the ticket on 11am and the number was 88. I entered my japan phone number so I could walk outside of the restaurant, I got the phone calling on 1315pm. I waited until 1345pm to have the seat. I could take the sushi on the conveyor belt or ordered directly to the sushi master. The quality of food was good, I will recommend 特大赤エビ, エビフライ and pudding ( original favour ) [ XL Red shrimp. Fried shrimp and original puddings ] Cost ¥8800/ 2 adult ( we both ate so much ) I left on 1430pm.

A collection of stores ranging from a fish market to local produce to butchery to an alcohol section. I got some sashimi from the fish market which was decent, fresh however the selection was lacking. The alcohol store is really well stocked and those who need their boozy fix can definitely hit this place up!

This is a nice weekend adventure. It is a small fish market with lots of variety. You can purchase fresh seafood from the market and cook on sight. Be sure to check availability and reservation of BBQ and seats before hand. BBQ season starts in summer months. I enjoyed original flavored ice cream at Hang Loose. The seasonal flavor was Tomato at the time.

This is a nice place to see the beautiful view of niigata city ❤️❤️❤️it's a 31st floor👍👍👍
Monaliza M — Google review
At the time of writing 'toki messe' is said to be the tallest building in Niigata. You can get to the 31st floor in the dedicated lift at the ground floor. A fee is charged for the parking only. No entrance fee. At the observation deck you'll be able to see almost 360 view of Niigata, including the harbour and airport. imo its best to be at the top in the late afternoon and to be there untill dark to see the city lights. There is also a restaurant and a souvenir shop at the deck. They dont allow food from outside. Lavatory facilities are also provided at the observation deck.

Much better view on a sunny day, 360/Panorama view at the 31st floor. Free of charge and you can go from 9am-21:30pm. The longest river of Japan, Shinano River. can be seen from the observatory.

Nice observation deck to see wonderful views of Niigata

What a view from the 31st floor of the observation deck! You can see it’s entire views of Niigata City and Sado Island in the far distance if it’s clear weather. I’ve enjoyed watching “Portable Shrine” called Mikoshi on the boat during 2019 Niigata Matsuri Festival from here. It was well air conditioned and comfortable to stay when it was very hot outside. There are a souvenir shop and a cafe.

Befco Bakauke Observation Deck

Observation deck
Sights & Landmarks
The Befco Bakauke Observation Deck, located on the 31st floor of the Toki Messi building, offers breathtaking panoramic views of both the city and surrounding waters through its expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. Visitors can enjoy unobstructed vistas in all directions, taking in the entirety of Niigata's stunning landscape. While nighttime visits are still impressive, be mindful that bright lights may reflect off camera lenses.
The Befco Bakauke Observatory is free to enter. From high above, you can gaze out over Niigata as the night gently unfolds before your eyes. The city lights flow like a river of stars, quietly reflecting a sense of softness and peace within. It’s a tender moment worth pausing for and quietly tucking away during your journey.

Free entrance to the 31st observation deck. The shop on the 31st floor opens at 10:00am Accessible by walk from Niigata station. Very good view of whole city, harbor and sea.
Reshma S — Google review
Free to enter, but the elevator is a little slow. We parked at a lot down the street, but there's also a lot connected by bridge directly across from the building (prices reasonable). It wasn't too crowded in the early/mid morning, but I could see it really filling up. There's a souvenir shop and restaurant also crammed into a small space, and I'm sure they don't let rando tourists take photos on the north side when there are people eating. Nice views of the city, but go early!
Grant M — Google review
You can access the observation deck through the elevator in the hotel. It's free to access and open to everyone not just hotel guests. Sunset on a clear day begins around 645pm There are restrooms, a small cafe, a gift shop and a few benches
Kevin K — Google review
Free observation tower with a great view and fantastic place to catch the sunset. They had an event cafe at the time we went (snoopy) though the cafe closed at 1830. The elevator with the window is on the second floor heading to the hotel Entrance on the left nearest the wall.
Relik S — Google review
Free. An observation deck with a spectacular view. You must see it at least twice: once during the day and once 10 minutes before sunset.
Platinum G — Google review
Beautiful views of the city and beyond. Be warned that if you go at night the lights are a bit bright so they reflect off the glass into your camera if you take a picture. At least when I went there was some private event preventing the north east side from being viewed. The rest of the view was still very nice. Also be sure to visit the toilets as the east view is visible from there!
Eric P — Google review
Free observation deck tower with a great view. If you travel to Niigata prefecture, I recommend you to go there. You can go on foot from the Niigata station.
