Bishnupur Pancharatna Temple also known as Shyam Rai Temple was built by King Raghunath Singha in 1643. Pancharatna Mandir stands on a low square plinth and consists of an ambulatory pathway with a porch opened by three arches on the four sides of the temple. The central shikhara is octagonal, while the rest four are square, walls are richly decorated with terracotta carvings featuring life aspects of Lord Krishna. The Pancharatna Temple honours Vishnu as Krishna, reflects the Pancharatna architectural style, and is perhaps West Bengal’s oldest surviving temple representative of this design. In Bengali Panchratna meaning five gem, hence it got the structures of five towers. Built entirely of brick, the only building material abundantly available in the region at the time, the Shyam Rai temple stands on a low square plinth with a char chala roof surmounted by ratnas or gems at each corner. While the towers in the corners are square-shaped, the central tower is octagonal in shape and they rest on a sloping roof in ‘Pida’ order. Each of the four sides of the temple greets us with triple multi cusped arched gateways, leading to the sanctum around which runs a well paved circumambulatory path. The curved cornice and eaves, derived from the thatched bamboo hut, so characteristic of Bengal, are special features of the temple, as of the others in Bishnupur. This style, directly descended from the bamboo framework of the huts, was originally bent into this shape to drain off rain water during frequent and intense downpours. The absence of stone or any other building material did not prove to be a deterrent to the architects and artisans of the times. Rather, they baked tales in clay tiles, narrating episodes from mythology and life, breathing life into bricks to give rise to a new form of temple architecture that lead to the construction of terracotta temples that were elaborately and intricately clad in high quality square panels of terracotta reliefs. The use of bricks in construction obviously meant that the routine column-beam style of building, characteristic of most early Islamic structures, could not be adopted. Hence, arches have been used to span spaces and support the weight above. Yet, a unique feature we observe about the Shyam Rai temple vis-à-vis most of Bishnupur’s temples is the influence of Islamic architecture in its curved ceiling. The Shyam Rai temple, with its superior figurines and floral motifs, was the first of its kind in Bengal. Its exterior and interior walls and ceiling are emblazoned with a profusion of stunning terracotta sculptures portraying Krishna Leela, episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and the socio-economic and political life of the people of the times. Particularly brilliant is the rasa mandala which embodies the convergence of artistic and structural knowledge. We also get to see a few specimens of the Gandhar style of sculpture on its walls. It is believed that the artisans of Uliwara and Panchmura villages close by were instrumental in carving high quality terracotta tiles with splendid engravings on them.

I had the privilege of visiting the sacred GhagarBuri Mandir near Asansol on 24th November 2024 with my wife, and the experience was truly divine. This temple, dedicated to Maa GhagarBuri, exudes an aura of tranquility and deep spiritual significance. From the moment we entered, we were enveloped in a sense of peace and devotion that only a place of such holiness can provide. The temple premises are impeccably maintained, with a serene ambiance that instantly calms the soul. Alongside Maa’s mandir, we also visited the Mahadev Mandir situated right next to it. The chants and prayers resonating through the air created an overwhelming spiritual connection. The sight of Lord Shiva’s sanctum, coupled with the nearby presence of Maa’s divine blessings, added to the sanctity of the entire experience. This place is not just a temple; it is a sanctum of hope and faith where one can feel the divine energy. It is perfect for those seeking peace, spiritual solace, or simply a connection with the divine. I highly recommend visiting GhagarBuri Mandir to experience the divine grace of Maa and Lord Shiva. Scenic and amazing view from top, We counted it as 500 steps to reach the top of the mountain, there was a hanuman and Mataji temple at the top. Sometimes at the top you'll get a small shop to buy snacks, depending on luck. All in all a great experience, a greenery view will catch your eyes while climbing.

Beautiful place......but be aware from monkeys 🐒 they want food .....so they will check your pocket, bags 🎒. Avoid bags to visit trikut parvat .

The deity to whom the temple is dedicated, Maa Chinmastikey, one of the Mahavidya Goddesses, is highly revered in Hindu culture, especially in North India. I have just returned from a 12 day tour of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. I am extremely grateful to have Fen from BODHITREE INDIA TRAVELS for planning, preparing and customising our itinerary and making it the best one possible. We were a group of 4 Family members travelling together. We travelled from Cochin-Munnar-Madurai-Periyar-Allepey- Cochin. We arrived in Cochin not knowing what to expect, but was overwhelmed and surprised by the excellent choice of hotels selected for us by Fen. On arrival in Cochin, we received a warm welcome from Fen, even though it was very early in the morning and he stayed in contact with me throughout our stay there, ensuring our well being and comfort. A very special and heartfelt thanks goes out to our Driver Sajan. He really made our long journeys easy and comfortable with his smooth and safe driving. he was very cooperative in heeding to our needs and very knowledgeable about the local sightseeing and markets. he was professional and helpful to us all the way. Sajan became our translator, photographer and a friend all rolled into one and we were very sad to say goodbye to him on the last day.

Visiting the Mahabodhi Temple was one of the most amazing spiritual experiences of my life. The moment you enter the temple premises, you feel a deep sense of peace and positivity. The security here is extremely alert and well-organized, which gives a lot of comfort to visitors and allows you to focus completely on the spiritual experience rather than worrying about safety. The temple itself is breathtaking. The main structure is so beautifully designed that it reminded me of the traditional temples of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, grand, detailed, and full of intricate carvings. Inside, the statue of Lord Buddha is truly mesmerizing, sitting there for a while brings an indescribable sense of calm. One of the best things here is that there is hardly any crowd most of the time. You can visit the temple peacefully without the rush and chaos you usually find in other tourist places. With fewer people around, it feels more personal, quiet, and truly meditative. Another favorite part was the serene pond at the back of the temple. It’s so peaceful and perfect for quiet reflection. Walking around the complex, seeing monks from different countries meditating under the sacred Bodhi Tree, was a surreal experience, it felt like I was in a place beyond this world, like heaven itself.

Visiting The Great Buddha Statue in Gaya was truly impressive. The massive statue stands peacefully in the middle of a green and calm environment, giving a deep sense of peace and spirituality. The place is well-maintained and perfect for photography or just relaxing in a quiet atmosphere. Unlike many tourist spots, it was not overcrowded when I visited, so I could easily enjoy the whole area without much disturbance. The pathways are good, but some parts could be improved for better accessibility, especially for wheelchairs. This site is definitely a must-visit when traveling to Gaya.

Gaya as we know happens to be the best place to conduct Hindu rituals for one's ancestors. We visited Gaya to perform annual shradh of my mother and performing pind-dan as posthumous ritual for departed soul of my parents and ancestors and on 10-11 Dec 2024. We spoke with Pandit Gautam Gayaav ji a month prior, in order to understand the types of rituals to be performed (as per our requirements) and the proper time to perform these rituals and accordingly, we booked a suitable date with him. We decided to stay for one night in Gaya and also perform all related poojas. We were given one of the designated rooms on the ground floor . The room was good, with a wide mattress and a bed for sleeping. The room was well-maintained with attached bathroom. After reaching Pandit ji’s place, he met us at our room and we discussed about the rituals which were to be conducted on the next day.Next day, we got up early and proceeded around 8 am by to a place dedicated for conducting rituals. The place has a lot of multiple structures constructed to conduct rituals and the tall trees and interspersed patches of grass, makes one feel that these rituals are being conducted in the midst of nature at the bank of river Falgu. The ritual went on for about 5 hours, we felt a sense of accomplishment paying obeisance to my parents and our ancestors. We were very thankful to Gautamji for all his efforts and for conducting the rituals to our satisfaction, and also for guiding us at key moments.

The atmosphere inside is calm and reflective, with multiple smaller tombs and well-preserved interiors. The craftsmanship and symmetry are stunning. You can feel the historical weight and the glory of the era just by walking through the corridors. It’s clean, well-maintained, and perfect for anyone who loves history, architecture, or photography. I highly recommend visiting during late afternoon for soft lighting and a peaceful vibe. Tip: Don’t miss the view from across the water — it’s absolutely postcard-worthy!
