Izu Animal Kingdom

Zoo
Outdoor Activities
Izu Animal Kingdom is a unique African savanna-themed park located in Izu Inatori, offering visitors the chance to interact with animals and enjoy walking safaris amid giraffes, zebras, and other herbivores roaming freely. Divided into three zones - Animal Zone, Play Zone, and Sports Zone - the park features attractions like a petting zoo, Ferris wheel, go-carts, and a dinosaur-inhabited forest.
The villa I stayed in had a giant ferris wheel up on a mountain nearby. I was very curious and upon asking the hotel staff said was part of the Izu animal kingdom. With just a 5 min walk to arrive, I felt compelled to go and see what I could find. In the zoo, I was greeted many fun animals. There was a large open area where many different animals lazed about. Giraffes were walking by and asking for food. The zebra and bison were off enjoying the sun. As I walked around, I found lots of other fun enclosures like a hare, cappybara and alpaca enclosure; a birds enclosure, and a small little animal petting enclosure. The parrots in the cappybara enclosure enjoyed a good laugh when I accidently dropped my veggies for the cappybaras into the water. Lastly, as I headed down the route back to the entrance, I was greeted to a small little theme park with many a rides to play on. A very fun park to spend the day in.
Stash P — Google review
I found this zoo visit to be extremely disappointing. It appears the animals are not well-fed—many of them approached visitors as if expecting food. At each enclosure, there was only a tiny portion of food available for purchase at 200–300 yen. The zoo has very few animal exhibits overall, and the entry ticket is quite expensive. They also don’t inform you at the entrance that major animals like elephants and bears are no longer in the zoo. The chimpanzee was kept in a very small, stressful-looking cage, which was upsetting to see. Overall, it felt like a complete waste of time and money. I strongly recommend visiting a public zoo instead—they usually offer larger, better-maintained spaces with a greater variety of animals.
Noor A — Google review
An absolutely delightful zoo with amusement park attractions as well as a driving range and much more! As far as the animal attractions there’s a lot of interactive elements. You can feed a great many of the animals to include the more pedestrian options such as the capybara, giraffes, zebras, & more. Then there’s the more exciting options for feeding which is the white tiger, the bear, and the baboons. You’ll also find plenty of food and drink options throughout the park with both on the move options as well as a restaurant. A place to take the family and loose yourselves for the day in the environment that is the Animal Kingdom.
TheJackball1986 — Google review
One of the saddest places I’ve ever been. I visited Animal Kingdom Japan while traveling with my family — I don’t like zoos, but my 3-year-old really wanted to see animals, so we went. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a deeply upsetting experience for all of us. Many animals were kept in small, barren enclosures and looked either sedated, sick, or extremely stressed. Several had visible skin problems and appeared unwell. It was hard to watch. Even my child, who was so excited to go, ended up feeling sad and confused.
Angela — Google review
Nice place. Tigers are white and you can feed them for an extra 500 yen. Lots of animals, from rabbits to elephants, owls to capybara. Appears that COVID lockdowns have had quite a big impact on the playground area and activities, don't think it was just a quiet Monday afternoon. High on a hill, not a place to easily walk to from the station, recommend car, taxi or bus to get there.
Paul S — Google review
I dislike zoos at the best of times, this was no exception. Cramped concrete enclosures are not suitable places for wild animals. As a result many of the animals here looked depressed, lonely and mentally challenged. Japan continues to disappoint with its lack of animal welfare and this place is not helping that image. Avoid if you find animals in distress a depressing sight.
Ben B — Google review
Izu Animal Kingdom is a family-friendly wildlife park in Higashiizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, offering an immersive experience with a variety of animals and interactive exhibits. The park features a walking safari where visitors can observe giraffes, zebras, and rhinoceroses in a savannah-like setting. Additionally, the Animal Touch Square allows guests to pet and feed small animals such as capybaras, guinea pigs, and armadillos. For those seeking more excitement, the park offers feeding experiences with white tigers, bears, and baboons for an additional fee. Amusement park attractions, including a Ferris wheel and merry-go-round, add to the fun. The park is open daily from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (last admission at 4:00 PM) and is closed during inspections in late June and mid-December. Admission is ¥2,200 for adults and ¥1,100 for children aged 4 to junior high school students. Visitors can reach the park by a 10-minute bus ride from Izu-Inatori Station.

Great fun. This zoo is not big, but it’s fun to walk through and they offer a lots of activities. Today, we got to feed many of the animals and even touched a rhyno! Well worth the stop if you’re in the area

Kawazu Seven Waterfalls

Mentioned on

Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Nestled in the mountains above Kawazu Town in southeastern Izu, the Kawazu Seven Waterfalls (Kawazu Nanadaru) offer a delightful forest walking trail spanning approximately 1 kilometer. The trail takes about an hour and a half to complete and leads visitors past seven waterfalls ranging from 2 meters to 30 meters tall.
The hike around the waterfalls was wonderful. It’s well kept and you can take the route from either end. We took a bus to the top of the trail and did it backwards. The falls are various sizes with a couple of them busting very tall and majestic. They had a couple rock throwing challenges along the hike that were fun. You’d pay 100円 to an honesty box and then take three tries to toss the rock into a basket a ways out.
Julian L — Google review
Wonderful walk along the river, gorgeous waterfalls. Mostly easy walking but some areas with lots (lots) of stairs. Can dip feet to cool down, one fall has a spring to help cool down. If you enjoy yourself at a leisurely pace, will take several hours. Or can be done quickly in probably just over an hour. If you find the hidden restaurant, go have barracuda or snapper!
Who O — Google review
A nice walk in the woods past 7 waterfalls. Most of the waterfalls are fairly small, and river access is prohibited in most areas. Not wheelchair friendly, but not a strenuous hike either. It was a nice enough stop, but wouldn't recommend going out of your way to see it either.
C Z — Google review
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Absolutely breathtaking! Kawazu Seven Waterfalls is one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots in Izu. The trail is easy to walk and perfectly maintained, winding through lush forest and crystal-clear streams. Each of the seven waterfalls has its own charm — from small cascades hidden among mossy rocks to the majestic final fall that feels straight out of a movie. The sound of rushing water, birds singing, and the fresh mountain air make it such a relaxing experience. Along the way, there are lovely cafés and small onsen inns where you can stop and enjoy a break with coffee or soft-serve ice cream. It’s also a great place to visit year-round — vibrant green in summer, fiery red leaves in autumn, and tranquil beauty in winter. If you’re in Izu, this is a must-see destination. Highly recommended for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone looking to unwind in Japan’s natural beauty. 🌿💧
Moe F — Google review
Its very beautiful and serene but its quite a treck. Lovely views overall and quite a nice shift from the busy citylife. The village where the waterfalls are is also quite cozy with a very friendly shop and an amazing udon/soba restaurant serving cheap and amazingly delicious food. If you have physical limitations or similar it could be dificult to treck through but its very beautiful for those who apreciate nature.
Oliver T — Google review
A wonderful series of waterfalls that are very easy to access. The trail is very well kept mostly concrete and very easy for almost any one to complete. There are a few areas with some steep steps and a wooden bridge. The falls and river are beautiful and make this well worth a visit. You can complete it easily in under an hour even if you linger a while. There is a cool area where you can attempt to land some small stones on a rock out in the river for your wish to come true. Each fall has an associated diety a story and a stamp so be sure to bring a notebook to collect the stamps! You cannot get in the water though while we were there a tour group walking the river and going over some of the falls was going by. If you are in Shimoda or any nearby town this would make an excellent trip.
Trey T — Google review
It was nice to walk through the path visiting the 7 waterfalls and the volcanic rocks. I visited the walk from uphill to down starting from north toward south. It seems easier than the reverse.
Luke L — Google review
I read reviews that recommended taking the bus to the top fall and walking the trail backwards/down. This is good advice for most people. The tourist office guide in Kawazu at the bus stop saw my cane. I am 76 and have knee and hip replacements. She told me to get off at the first stop, see falls 1 to 3, backtrack and see falls 4 and 5. I did NOT follow her advice and went to the top fall to walk down. I was wrong: she was correct. The upper trail starts out nice but then there are a million steps down. I spent all my concentration on not tripping or falling. It interfered with my ability to enjoy nature. My wife and i made it. But if you are elderly with mobility issues do what the Kawazu tourist lady tried so hard to communicate to me. You are old and impaired. Accept it and enjoy what you can. Multiply picture by at least 30 times.

This natural wonder is steeped in folklore and has been designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. Nice waterfall right next to a parking lot. You need to walk a little bit and there are a bunch of steps to take. At the bottom of the falls theres a Wasabi farm which is cool to see. You can also rent angling gear and try to catch some fish.
Matthijs — Google review
One of the most beautiful waterfall sites anywhere on the world. Surrounded by wasabi fields. Plenty of of parking space. Short hike. Interesting shops selling wasabi and rainbow trouts. Very accessible for those travelling with kids. Not packed with people so you can still get a serene atmosphere at the waterfall. Great drive to the location is a plus
Rizal P — Google review
Wow this place is a total GEM and must visit. Not only for the waterfall but to see how Wasabi is made! Try the wasabi ice cream at the end (glad I tried but wouldn't again). This place was a highlight for me fromt he view and all. Go and visit!
Min P — Google review
Beautiful, but too touristy. Can't access the river unless you pay for fishing, which is disappointing. Would have been amazing to sit down on a rock and dip feet in the stream. For those who excuse fencing off the falls by claiming protection of environment from tourists - there are hundreds more waterfalls all over Japan that are open but just as clean, so no made up excuses are necessary.
Herr D — Google review
Go to Izu_Hanto but not stopping by Joren Falls then it is not completely yet. Story of famous Izu dancers by Kawabata, it is here, this location is within the story, the young student with a young girl encounter through out their trips. Parking is large free, right by the way down to Jorell falls is status of the beautiful two famous innocent, light hearts romance standing. The water falls down by 200 more steps but in well maintained and well cared for every one. Down to the falls you will feel the strong of water running and clean air fresh air. Small shop for wasabi, ice cream and sign up if you want to go fishing there. It is one of the main stops in Izu peninsula if you are interested in the beautiful izu Hanto. Going up after visiting the falls then coffee shop Idoriko's coffee shop. Name from the old train used to run at this side. Gifts shops is also carrying many products, fresh wasabi 's available to purchase if you like. This place is good stop and easy to all. We loved to be here. Thank you
Y. Y — Google review
The photos don't do it justice, it was more spectacular than I thought, especially in the rain. The surprising bonus was the small wasabi farm also in the gorge, so you can see the waterfall and get your wasabi hit (including buying fresh wasabi) in the same place. There are about 200 steps and no wheelchair accessibility. No toilets in the gorge either.
Douglas A — Google review
Nice, cold, easy to reach. Try the wasabi cashews sold down at the waterfall!

Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium

Mentioned on
22 lists
Aquarium
Nature & Parks
The Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium is a unique attraction that showcases deep-sea creatures, including luminescent fish, octopuses, and the rare coelacanth. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring frozen coelacanths, considered living fossils, and get up-close views of massive deep-sea isopods. The aquarium covers the depths of Suruga Bay and other deep-sea locations worldwide, displaying about 1,500 creatures from approximately 60 species.
Been to a number of aquariums and this has to be a really unique one with creatures not seen in some of the big aquariums. Many specimens of deep sea fish (naturally so, as they thrive in very different environments hard to replicate in the aquarium setting). Good place to learn about deep sea fishes and hopefully more written explanation in English would be helpful. For the price it is worth the visit. There are also some fun entertainment rides relating to the aquarium around it.
Quin C — Google review
This aquarium has a reasonable ticket price and is worth a visit, especially if you haven’t been before. The space inside is quite large and well-organized, making it easy to walk around without feeling crowded. While there aren’t many rare species on display, it’s still a fun and educational experience for all ages. There are restaurants and a parking lot conveniently located nearby, making it a great spot to spend a few hours with family or friends. Overall, a pleasant visit!
A W — Google review
We went on a Monday at 12pm. Even though it was a midday in the weekday, there was still a few people inside. Very unique selection of animals because it depends on what is caught. We went when it was off-season, so there was no flapjack octopus. In addition to the deep sea animals, there are comprehensive explanations of how they catch the animals, how they maintain the aquarium etc. Overall a bit of a small aquarium, but definitely worth a visit especially for its price!
Zach T — Google review
A very beautiful aquarium to visit, with a good and wide variety of fish. It's also located in a cozy town surrounded by typical regional foods and culture. Parking is large and easy to find.
Claudia M — Google review
Very interesting museum! It also has an aquarium floor with many different deep sea creatures. There are also English explanations on most objects. We saw real japanese spider crabs and they have (as the only museum in the world) frozen specimens of coelacanth. Very impressive. We had a great time and learned a lot!
Lats — Google review
If you are in the area, might as well. It's not too big but you will see lots of species you would rarely see otherwise. Might make you hungry for the fish market outside lol. The gift shop has some good stuff. The isopods give me the creeps in real form and plush form.
Andrew L — Google review
Even amongst the many aquariums in Japan, this is a unique one, though not that huge. Focused solely on deep sea creatures, it has many fascinating live specimens and it even display non deep sea affiliate of the deep sea specimens just so we can observe the difference. Of course the main highly is the frozen specimen at -20 degrees Celsius and incredibly has been frozen since the 80s as the only one in the world that is 100% original (not taxidermy).
Rtexal T — Google review
It is a very interesting museum. Rather small, but focusing on the deep sea which you dont have in other aquariums. We learned new things which was very fun. It is not a must see, but if you are in Mushimi or Numazu then your options on activities in the summer heat are limited and you will most probably enjoy it like we did 😀

Numazu Port Observatory Water Gate

Mentioned on
2 lists
Observation deck
Sights & Landmarks
Numazu Port Observatory Water Gate, also known as View-O Flood Gate, offers breathtaking panoramic views of Suruga Bay and Mount Fuji. The observatory provides a serene and relaxing atmosphere with minimal crowds, making it easy to enjoy the unobstructed 360-degree views. Visitors can take in the picturesque scenery during both day and night, with the possibility of catching a glimpse of Mount Fuji on clear days. The affordable ticket price makes this experience even more worthwhile.
The view is breathtaking. It's a lovely place to visit. The entrance is super cheap, and there's a beautiful park nearby.
Victor C — Google review
Visited this on a weekday. There is barely any people so it is quite nice that we don't have to queue up and get to enjoy the scenic views without much distractions. The ticket price for adults is really cheap, only 100 Yen, so the price is negligible in all regards. The view is very nice because it is 360 degrees, allowing us to view everything unobstructed. Moreover, some windows are opened, allowing us to take clearer pictures. One problem is that some air-conditioned are switched off somehow (though the public can switch back on), making the second portion of the tower much hotter and stuffy. Overally, this place is quite nice and worth a short visit.
Deacon H — Google review
View-O at Numazu Port is a well-known local landmark and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. The structure is impressive, and the view is great from every angle — perfect for photography any time of day. Whether you're capturing the gate from the streets or along the waterfront, it always looks striking. I’ve heard you can go up into the observatory, but I haven’t done that myself. Still, it’s a peaceful and photogenic spot that’s easy to enjoy without crowds. A hidden gem for travelers and photo enthusiasts!
A W — Google review
A functional water gate with observatory space, and a bridge connecting two sides of the harbour entrance. Entrance fee is inexpensive, and have access to 360° view with Mt. Fuji in sight
Sam K — Google review
Numazu Port's View-O Flood Gate provides spectacular day and night views of Numazu City, Shizuoka, Mount Fuji and bodies of water that surround three of four directions. In the day, it is said that you can see Mount Fuji on a clear day. In the night, you are greeted by its luminous colours that light the observation deck and towers that support/move the flood gate, making it a sight in itself of the night. Unfortunately, I was only able to visit during the night and catch the views during that time. However, with the December night that it was, not being cold on the outside and being warm inside the observation deck, it made for a nice, quiet overlook of the city interior and a hint of Mount Fuji resting behind a partly-cloudy night. For 100円, you can get many nice photo opportunities up on the observation deck. Even at night, the lights-off interior and mainly-exterior lighting creates a relaxing... and, to some, romantic... ambience/aesthetic. It's a must-visit during all seasons. Visitors to Numazu should make it a point to stop here and go through both sides of the port's inlet to discover what each side has to offer.

Amazing views across Numaza port and city. A must see when visiting the area. Elevator to the top is only ¥100 for adults, ¥50 for children. The surrounding fish market area has lots to see and do; with many great shops and restaurants (the sashimi is really good). Highly recommended for a lovely day out.

Nature & Parks
Located in Kuwasaki, Fuji City, Mt. Fuji Children's World is a fun-filled kids' attraction offering a diverse range of indoor and outdoor activities. From nature observation and horseback riding to water play and animal petting, the park provides various engaging programs for children. Additionally, visitors can enjoy amenities such as restaurants, rest houses, barbecue areas, shops, hotels, campgrounds, and unique lodging options like yurts within the park premises.
This place is an aging gem. The prices can be beaten and the grounds are naturally beautiful set with Fuji-San as a fantastic backdrop. There are sign of wear and some best-effort managed vegetation growth, but it’s not worth thinking about. The splash pad and water slide were my 4 year olds favorite. Also, the canoe/kayak route is free! It’s a great place to take a leisurely hike around. 5-stars for stress free fun!
Luke M — Google review
Went in early Dec 2024. The place offers very nice scenery of Mount Fuji. The attraction for children is very limited during the cold season. The snow ride is closed when we are they, which is very disappointing. The animal farm is not big. There's horses , rabbits ,sheep, goats, and Alpaca. There's an entrance fee to pay. Every attraction need to pay for a fee like the tricycle. The place is huge and walking from one attraction to another take around 10min. If choose to take bus or train to get to those attraction, you need to pay for the ride as well. Overall, average for children experience and adult for the scenery.

We visited Fuji Children’s World on Saturday, November 1, 2025. We took a taxi from Gotemba Station, which cost around 5,600 yen, as there was no public transportation available to and from the park. When it was time to return, the staff were exceptionally helpful, they assisted us in booking a taxi, stayed with us until it arrived, and even escorted us to the pick-up location where the driver was waiting.

It is a nice place to take younger children to enjoy nature and play outdoors. It is best to bring picnic type lunch with you. You can enjoy an entire day outside walking o trails, children riding ponies, trips on the water in boats. There is frisbee golf and grand golf. There is not a lot for you to purchase inside the park so best come prepared with drinks and snacks as needed. If you don’t have children but an a nice place to walk around and enjoy the beautiful scenery this is o e of those places.

My family loves visiting Mt. Fuji Children's world! In August you can visit their beetle exhibit and hold stag or Hercules beetles. My children love the waterside and "ninja" water run. The highlight for us is always the fishing pond, where we catch and grill our lunch, as they will gut the fish you catch. It's a great place to enjoy with kids, lots of beautiful nature to see. Be sure to plan to spend the entire day here, as there is so much to do and you won't want to leave!

Toi Gold Mine

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the scenic Izu Peninsula, the Toi Gold Mine is a fascinating glimpse into Japan's rich mining history. This centuries-old site once thrived during the Edo and Meiji periods, producing over 40 tonnes of gold and an impressive amount of silver. Visitors can explore its extensive network of tunnels, which stretches approximately 100 km, and experience a unique panning activity for gold.
Last minute stop because I saw the road sign of it. It was not bad at all. Feel like it's more for children but you can enjoy a quick tour as an adult. The path into the mine is way longer than what I was expecting. So it was a good surprise
Asa M — Google review
The museum exhibit and the walk through the tunnel was average. Nothing impressive. We however had fun experiencing the gold panning.
Andy G — Google review
Interesting tour in the gold mine with explanations in English and a small museum at the end. About 30 min. There’s also gold panning additional activity.
Zohar E — Google review
A great place to take your children to explore historical gold mines and the history behind it. The mine itself has a really low ceiling so need to be real cautious. There is also an area to experience panning; also a great experience for kids as it’s almost guaranteed you can find some placer gold (it’s artificial). Adult tickets are about 1900 yen for the whole pack experience. Huge parking lot.
Poyopoyo — Google review
Such a cool experience. The majority of the experience is in an air conditioned mine where animatronic robots illustrate the rigors of daily mining life. There is a small museum indoors attached to a gift shop where the record breaking gold bar resides. There is also an indoor gold panning area where you can buy tickets for a timed panning session. People will find little flecks of gold as a nice souvenir.
Mar M — Google review
Interesting history. The mineral mines in this area really made this place prosperous. It was fun learning about the mine and panning for gold. The garden was also very beautiful and picturesque. They have gold foil ice cream. There’s no taste to the gold but the ice cream was delicious. Good place to stop if you’re in the area. Their restaurant is open from 11:00-15:00 with last order at 14:30. There are food trucks in the parking lot.
Danielle M — Google review
Creatively illustrated process of gold mining procedures that was carried out in the past here. Apart from the tunnel visit, you also get to experience the process of filtering gold from the ore. It's sort of a back bending activity, however worth trying.
Sridhar K — Google review
Interesting place to visit, one can understand the gold mining history of Japan from here. The tunnels created for gold mining is kept and maintained for the visitors to walk around and see. Through out the tunnel models are displayed explaining the life of miners. There is a nice museum near, highlights are 12kg and 250kg gold. Visitors can touch and lift it(if you are strong enough). Another attraction is the gold panning, at an extra cost we can try out luck in gold panning at the area provided near the gift shop. One can get some interesting Omiyage from the gift shop here. Overall a good experience worth the time for kids and adults.

Lover’s Cape, also known as Koibito Misaki, is a romantic spot in Japan that overlooks the Sea of Japan. It's a popular destination for couples who come to enjoy the breathtaking views and make wishes at the heart-shaped shrine. The cape features a wooden walkway leading to a clifftop observation deck with sculptures, offering stunning views of Suruga Bay and Mount Fuji on clear days.
Views at the tip of the cape are extremely beautiful but be prepared to walk up and down slopes and climb stairs to the observation deck. Overall perfect place to soak into the seaside view! Unfortunately, I was not able to see a clear of mt Fuji again.

Absolutely phenomenal view of mount fuji via the sea, and views of the coast all around you. However, check the weather as its not a good idea to come when its cloudy or rainy due to limited visibility. Be prepared to walk 10 minutes on quite steep concrete. Nice walk however.

It was the perfect destination to take a couple. Although the place is called “Lover’s Cape,” it’s a wonderful spot for anyone to enjoy. A short 10-minute walk through lush greenery from the parking area leads to a high vantage point overlooking the sea. The area is rich in nature, with the constant song of bush warblers, and the ocean was beautiful.

It’s much more than the description on the website, before I came here, I thought the things I can do there are ringing the bell and drinking a cup of coffee. The truth is there is a big garden and a small mountain, you can enjoy the natural views and do some exercise by climbing the mountain. Moreover, the cats there are actually very cute and popular, many souvenirs are based on them! Kawaii

Kai Zenkōji Temple

Kai Zenkōji Temple, located in Kofu city, is an ancient and remarkable Buddhist temple with a rich history. Built by Lord Shingen in 1558, it was intended to safeguard Buddhist treasures from Shinano Zenko-ji Temple during the battles of Kawanakajima. The temple houses the largest wooden structures in Eastern Japan and symbolizes significant treasures in Japanese culture. Visitors can explore the atmospheric main hall and experience unique acoustic properties that reflect sound back at them.
For those of you visiting from overseas, do you know Takeda Shingen, Japan's strongest Sengoku warlord? During the Battle of Kawanakajima, he moved the main hall, Amida Nyorai, various Buddhas, temple treasures, and the bell to this location so that Zenkoji Temple would not be hit by the flames of war. It's not flashy, but you can enjoy the good old Japanese atmosphere. Please come and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere.
Mic ( — Google review
Kai Zenkoji Temple was underwhelming. While the temple itself is decent, it lacks the charm and care that I expected. The surrounding area felt somewhat uninspired, and there wasn’t much information provided about the temple's history or significance. It didn't have the peaceful atmosphere I was hoping for, making the visit feel a bit lackluster. Overall, it’s not worth going out of your way to see.
Hannes P — Google review
A historic temple very worthwhile stopping by if you're in Kofu. The grounds are not huge, but the main hall is impressive and attractively weathered. There's a 'hell' you can go through feeling for a lock in the pitch black basement -- more fun than it sounds! Also take time to go off to the right of the main hall and there is a collection of interesting statues of Buddhist deities particular to the Yamanashi area.

Kōfu Castle Ruins

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Kōfu Castle Ruins, located in Maizuru Castle Park, is the remains of a 16th-century hilltop castle built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and later fortified by Tokugawa Ieyasu. It is one of the most important castles in the Kanto area and offers a unique view of Mt. Fuji in the background. While the castle itself has been restored, its surrounding stone walls are over 400 years old and designated as a historic site.
It's a really nice place, the history is super interesting and the views are great! There was a local free guide who taught us about the caste, it's architecture and it's history and it was suuuuper interesting! If you see one of these guides definitely take their explanation, as they speak english and their knowledge it's so valuable.

A nice park surrounds this historical castle grounds in downtown Kofu. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area.
BearusAurelius — Google review
I wandered up to Kōfu Castle in July and was pleasantly surprised by its perfect blend of history, greenery, and summer tranquility. The stone walls and reconstructed gate are beautifully shaded by towering trees, making the walk up to the Honmaru hill refreshingly cool. At the top, the summer breeze and unmatched views of Kōfu city stretched out under a clear blue sky—no Mount Fuji this month, but still a stunning panorama that felt so peaceful. Midday sunshine made the stone pathways glow, and the open grounds were dotted with locals enjoying a shaded stop under the trees. This time of year, you’ll likely see families and couples enjoying a relaxing stroll instead of the springtime crowds. Plus, the signage around the site gives great historical insights about Takeda Shingen’s legacy—perfect for history buffs. Exploring the castle took me about 45 minutes, including a few stops to sit and soak in the summer ambiance. A quick, enriching detour if you’re in Kōfu during July—don’t forget your sunhat and water bottle! 🏯☀️

I went there during cherry blossom season. It’s such a beautiful place and really close to the train station. 🌸🚉

Walking towards the castle grounds, I glanced backwards and caught a glimpse of a mountain peak through the clouds in the distance. Could it really be? My pace increased as I entered the well-kept grounds and climbed the stone steps making my way to the viewing platform. The last step had arrived and the clouds began to clear. And just like that, the elusive Fujisan appeared. Whilst I’ve seen Fuji from afar, seeing it that bit closer is a bit more special. Pleasant place to visit all around, beautiful gardens and peaceful atmosphere. If only someone would knock down that inconveniently placed metal tower…

The Statue of Takeda Shingen is a significant tourist attraction in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. It was built in 1919 to honor Takeda Shingen, a renowned samurai who played a crucial role during the Clan Wars era. The shrine stands on the remains of the fortified residence of the Takeda clan, adding to its historical importance.
During my early college years, I had to do a report on Takeda Shingen. I always love reading and watching both fictional and non-fictional accounts of his battles. The statue is right in the middle of Kofu city next to the train station. Plenty of near by parking and places to eat.

Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art, also known as the Museum of Jean-Francois Millet, is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts. It houses an impressive collection of 70 works by Millet alongside pieces from renowned Japanese artists, making it home to over 10,000 artworks in total.
This is a real gem. Has an impressive collection of pieces by Jean-Francois Millet and others from the Barbizon school. In addition it has well curated collections of Japanese art and more contemporary artists. The gallery is very well presented and puts many a big city gallery to shame. The spacious gardens have numerous themes including a Japanese garden and sculptures by Rodin. Make an effort to get out to this excellent institution.

While it is wonderful to have an art museum in town, the collections aren’t the most impressive, but I am no art critic. The park is the true reason to go to the area, the park is always full of families (and so many dogs) and a great place for an afternoon picnic. For a relaxing Sunday afternoon I recommend enjoying the park and skipping the museum!

I visited the museum with my husband and 3year-old daughter. And got strong feeling that the museum unofficially refuses small kids.. We've been never given this many precautions in public places before. They asked us not to let go of our kid's hand, not to have her anything in her hand and etc.. even my daughter was already in my husband's arm when they tell us precautions, we felt so disturbing and guilty with the fact that we have a kid with us.. During at the exhibition room, we again was told from another staff member the same precautions we had already heard at the entrance.. Even considering that the museum keeps masterpieces and they need visitors to be cautious but this is excessive. I've visited many other museums in Europe and have seen parents enjoying arts with their children, discussing about art pieces freely. I think that's how a museum achieve their most important goal, "to provide people with a place where art is blooming by educating and inspiring young generation" In this term, i can say that this museum fails to do so. My daughter looked on the verge of crying as even she didn't understand whole conversation we had with staff but she still understood overall meaning and tone that she was not welcomed. We left the exhibition room soon but I should have left there even at the entrance when we had to hear the stupid restrictions they set to small kids.. Then we would have not hurt her feeling. Please do not visit this place if you have a kid.

Nestled in Shimizu Ward, Miho no Matsubara, or Miho Pine Forest, is a breathtaking 7-kilometer stretch of coastline that captivates visitors with its sandy beach adorned by a lush grove of pine trees. On clear days, the majestic Mount Fuji serves as a stunning backdrop to this picturesque setting. This area is not only renowned for its natural beauty but also forms part of the Mt.
visited on 20 May 2025. love love loved this place. it made me feel so close to nature, having the pine trees and sea in one view. would have completed the trio if Mt Fuji had made an appearance! there is a neat little museum/tourist information center with a free exhibition on Miho no Matsubara and its beginnings. I enjoyed learning about it alot, and how it had a significant cultural and religious influence on Japan. I would love to come back to view Mt Fuji again. It was designated as one of the 3 (old) scenic views of Japan but it definitely deserves to be on the new list as well! It is a protected world heritage site and very well loved by locals as well.

Packed with people. The pines were interesting. Twisted trees instead of straight. We only saw a faint outline of mount Fuji because of the haze in the sky. They say it's rarely visible in June through August. Didn't expect the air pollution in Japan.

If you’re over 5’11 beware of the pine trees they are sharp. But turning the corner and seeing Mount Fuji without too much clouds was amazing. Got the ferry and bus which took under 40min. Little bit of a walk to get the the scenic views but worth it.

Visiting Miho Pine Forest in Japan was an experience I will always cherish, even if the weather didn’t quite cooperate. I had come with the hopes of catching a breathtaking view of Mount Fuji in the distance, a vision I had seen countless times in photos. Unfortunately, the sky was blanketed with thick clouds, and Fuji-san remained hidden from sight. Despite that, the forest itself was a serene and magical place, offering a unique charm that more than made up for the missed view. Walking along the coastline, the first thing that struck me was the color of the sand. Unlike the golden beaches I’m used to, Miho’s sand is a deep, almost mysterious black a reminder of the volcanic activity that shaped this region centuries ago. There’s something grounding about walking on these dark sands, almost as if you’re stepping on history itself. The contrast between the black sand and the vibrant green pine trees lining the shore was striking, and I found myself pausing frequently just to take it all in. One of the highlights of the visit was learning about the legend of Hagoromo. According to local folklore, a celestial maiden once descended to this very beach, leaving behind her magical feathered robe. A fisherman discovered it, and through a series of events, the tale tells of love, trust, and the enchantment of the heavens touching the earth. Standing where the story unfolded gave the place a poetic aura, and I could almost imagine the soft wind carrying whispers of the legend through the pines. It made the forest feel alive with stories from the past, connecting nature with culture in a way that was profoundly moving. The walk through the forest was refreshing and peaceful. The tall pine trees swayed gently in the breeze, filling the air with the crisp, calming scent of pine. Even without the sight of Mount Fuji, there was a sense of tranquility that made the visit worthwhile. I found small spots where I could sit quietly, listening to the waves lap against the shore, feeling the soft sand beneath my feet, and simply soaking in the serene atmosphere. For photographers, this location is a treasure trove even on cloudy days. The textures of the black sand, the silhouettes of pine trees, and the often-dramatic coastal skies create perfect opportunities for moody and evocative shots. Families, couples, or solo travelers will all find something to enjoy, whether it’s a quiet stroll, a reflective pause, or just the sheer joy of being in a beautifully preserved natural space. In the end, Miho Pine Forest reminded me that sometimes the journey itself the sights, sounds, and stories is just as meaningful as any iconic view. Though Mount Fuji stayed hidden behind the clouds, the forest, the beach, and the legend of Hagoromo made the visit unforgettable. It’s a place I would happily return to, perhaps on a sunnier day, but even now, it holds a quiet, mystical charm that stays with you long after you leave.

Absolutely work the visit! It's a bit of a walk, but the beautiful pine trees, rocky beach and views of Mt. Fujitsu were so worth it!

Great view of fujisan on a good day. Have to walk a bit for the view but it was a unique scene of fujisan from this place. Recommend to go if you have time, it’s far from other usual fuji-spotting places

Didn't get to see Mt Fuji from here - granted it is summer, so low visibility anyways. But good for a walk and sightseeing!

I’d definitely recommend this spot to anyone visiting Shizuoka on a clear day. You can enjoy a unique combination of Mt. Fuji, the Pacific Ocean, and a beautiful pine forest — it’s really something special.

A hidden gem in Shimuzu where you’ll find endless eateries and retail shops. There are two floors of places to eat. You’ll find tax free shopping at Uniqlo and Gu. There’s an amusement park with a Ferris wheel and rides for kids. I had a delicious buffet lunch at Hatoba Kitchen at a reasonable price that included drinks and desserts. Make sure you visit the top floor for a beautiful view of Mt Fuji on a clear day.

Had a great time exploring this huge mall. Great food, bakery, stores and just an all around good variety of items. If you are on a cruise like me, the Google map might tell you that it is a 10 min walk..no more like a 5 min walk! There were alot of other things there like a museum and arcade and a huge ferris wheel. Great area to explore!!!

This two-level mall is situated on the Shimizu waterfront, near the International Cruise Terminal... be advised, however, that there are two separate buildings, offering different types of retail shopping.

A big beautiful mall with everything for everyone. Departmental stores, restaurants, foodcourt, amusement park, cultural events, cinemas, supermarket … etc. A bright red free shuttle bus is available at JR Shimizu Station Minato Exit (East Exit). Go to S-Pulse Dream Plaza website for details. There’s no taxi stationed at the Plaza. Have to use the taxi phone to call for one. We asked Plaza concierge for assistance. She was very kind. She helped us book a taxi to Shin-Fuji Station

Kunōzan Tōshōgū, a picturesque Shinto shrine established in 1617, is a must-visit in Shizuoka Prefecture. It honors Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate and a key figure in Japanese history. The shrine's serene ambiance and stunning architecture make it an ideal place to pay respects to this influential leader.
#1 place to see in Shizuoka. Tomb of Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun, and a truly ornate shrine in his honor (built by his son). Either walk up 1200 steps, or take the ropway from Nihondaira.
Roland H — Google review
extremely ornate temple and they also share a video onsite about the restoration efforts put in to the temple. the entrance fee may be abjt steep however the grounds are pretty big and extend beyond the ticket office. the steps down are uneven stone steps, so do take note for those who may be less mobile. I took the reverse route - Nihondaira ropeway down from Yume Terrace to the shrine, before trekking down the steps. There is an amazing view of the ocean on the way down
Wei ( — Google review
A magnificent temple right in front of the sea, a relaxing place that soothes you in a second. I just recommend being close for the stairs to get to the temple place. But I assure you that it is worth the effort.
Laila M — Google review
There are paid parking near entrance ¥300-¥500. You can use Cable car or stairs (about 1400steps) to reach to temple. You have to buy tickets to enter the temple and ticket center is at top, ¥700 per adult. The view on the top is amazing 🤩
Lakshika E — Google review
quite like it here - it's quiet and calm, then was able to walk around with a peaceful mind and enjoy the environment. but i went there at a late time so some entrance to the temple was already blocked, i was only able to look at it from outside. but it's beautifully built. the stairs were quite large and high, so had to walk carefully especially for elderly. i spent around an hour here but i think when it's in operation hour like around noon? when all the temples are open and welcome for worshipping, it'd be good to spend more time here to refresh and relax both body and soul here.
Giami L — Google review
I recommend everyone visit this shrine and museum. I learned so much about Tokugawa here and had a wonderful experience. Just be prepared to climb a couple steps. It's worth every moment

The shrines, lanterns, scenery, etc. were beautiful! It was very crowded when we went.

Absolutely Beautiful shrine to see. I didn't know I took the easy way to the top until I was walking down the mountain. **The shrine has an entrance fee of 800¥ for an adult** There are 2 ways to get to the top. **Depends on what side of the mountain you are coming from!**** 1. You take the stairs up if you come from the sea side. (This is the main entrance) -do NOT underestimate these stairs, there are A LOT of stairs. Be prepared to be super tired, and bring water with you. 2. Coming from the zoo side you can take a bus ride to the top, then take the really cool ropeway to the shrine. - to use the ropeway it is 700¥ one way, so be prepared to pay that fee if you want to go to the shrine. If you have a goshuin book, they have the written seal area outside the shrine next to the ticket booth. People were nice and directed you where to go. All and all, this was a great visit and well worth the time it took me to get here. If you go, please be respectful of the sacred area, this is a religious and worship site. Conduct yourself accordingly!

When you are in Shizuoka City I would definitely recommend this place to be visited. Not a Large zoo and not too small either. All the Animals here are active. From big cats to primates to lesser panda’s and capybaras.petting zoo is also available except at the time we went there it is closed. There’s also an observation tower where you need to ride a slow lift to reach the tower and go down but you can also use the long slide to go down which is much more fun even for an adult 😅 They have 3 parking areas in the area.parking fee is around ¥620. Small kids amusement park and souvenir shop.

I visited Nihondaira Zoo to see and pet the capybara, but unfortunately, I arrived too late. Visitors should come earlier because petting the capybara is only allowed before 12 PM. The polar bear was adorable, swimming happily in its ice pool, bringing joy to everyone watching. The red panda was incredibly cute, and the zoo has a wide variety of monkeys to see. Visiting on a Sunday and taking the bus is not recommended as the place gets quite crowded. A delightful experience overall!

Nihondaira Zoo is a fantastic destination, especially for families and animal lovers! The capybara exhibit was a highlight, and each animal’s environment is thoughtfully designed, making it enjoyable to explore. The zoo has a diverse collection of animals, ensuring there's something for everyone. The staff were exceptionally helpful, providing clear information and directions, and the amenities were clean and well-maintained. I highly recommend Nihondaira Zoo for a fun and memorable outing!
Richard E — Google review
Although the animals look a little sad and stressed out, the zoo is pretty small and has lots of animals in a small space so you don't have to walk as much as an American zoo. The tiger is trapped in like a one bedroom space and elephant is by itself even if it's illegal to have elephant by itself in the US cus it's supposed to be in packs in many acres of land. This zoo had it's elephant in a tiny tiny jail kind of space. The curry in the cafeteria was so good.

Horai-bashi Bridge, located in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, is a remarkable wooden pedestrian bridge that spans 897 meters over the Oi River. Recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest wooden pedestrian bridge in the world, it offers stunning views of Mount Fuji and allows visitors to enjoy the river's flow and seasonal scenery while strolling across. The bridge provides a unique experience with its gentle wood underfoot and is especially captivating during winter when it offers magnificent views of Mt.
The longest wooden footbridge in the world, we paid the JPY100 fee but I think if you are not paying still no one will care. Luckily we get the view of Mount Fuji but I believe it's nearly impossible to take photos of the bridge and Mount Fuji together like those on the social media. I couldn't help but smile wryly as I remembered running across the Shiogo suspension bridge and getting told off by everyone. As I was talking about it, a young man told me that there was a scene in a manga where people run across the bridge. That's right. Even though it's scary, you still want to run across it. The section where Shiogo Station is located was suspended due to heavy rain several years ago, and trains do not stop there. There were some weeds on the platform, but the inside of the station building was kept clean. The clock is also working and well maintained. When I visited, there was no one there but me, so I sat on a bench for a while and stared at the mountains on the opposite bank. You can feel the time passing slowly. If it's a warm day with no wind, I think it's a little-known spot where you can relax. There is "Shiogo Suspension Bridge Parking Lot 1" nearby, so we recommend that you leave your car there and visit while sightseeing around the suspension bridge. I only wanted to get off at this station for the Shioho Suspension Bridge. It rained heavily today, which may have reduced the number of tourists. When I got off the bus, there was no shelter from the rain on the platform. I quickly crossed the road to the waiting area built on the opposite side, and looked around for hundreds of meters, except for the passing cars. There was no one else around, and it felt a bit desolate. In addition, it is also difficult not to notice the entrance sign of the tall Shioxiang Suspension Bridge on the side. The Shioxiang Suspension Bridge is a very exciting suspension bridge. It is hard to imagine that such a simple and thin structure can support my 90kg uncle. People who come here may be worried about not being able to find a toilet. In fact, in addition to the station platform, there is a small attraction of Kawane Waterfall near the entrance of Shiogang Suspension Bridge. There is also a clean and beautiful toilet there. Overall, although the neighborhood is a bit desolate , but there is still no shortage of necessary facilities. Kakegawa Castle

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Kakegawa Castle is a picturesque castle complex located on a mountain, offering stunning views of Kakegawa city. It is renowned for being the first post-war main keep reconstructed using traditional carpentry techniques. The castle features wooden chambers, a tea room, and an ornate watchtower set within hilltop gardens. Visitors can explore the original Ninomaru Goten and enjoy Shizuoka tea in the serene garden below.
The view from the castle tower is spectacular. I am deeply moved when I imagine how the head of the family looked at this scenery at the time. The tea shop near the castle was very quaint. My business is big success.I got lot of money. Thank you for everything.

Get the combo ticket for a fun step back in time when visiting the castle. It includes access to the old buildings plus matcha tea and sweets. A really memorable experience!
Nunan H — Google review
Kakegawa Castle is a hidden gem — elegant, peaceful, and wonderfully restored. The wooden main keep stands proudly above the town, offering great views of the city and surrounding hills. Unlike some larger castles, it feels intimate and authentic, with a calm atmosphere that lets you really appreciate its history. The reconstruction was done using traditional methods, so the interior still feels like stepping back in time — wooden floors, steep staircases, and open rooms that echo with the past. The small museum nearby gives great context about the castle’s history and the local area. The surrounding gardens and paths are lovely to stroll through, and the whole site is clean, well-maintained, and easy to explore. It’s a quieter, less touristy alternative to some of Japan’s bigger castles, but every bit as beautiful. If you’re travelling through Shizuoka or between Tokyo and Kyoto, it’s definitely worth a stop — a peaceful window into Japan’s feudal past.
Darko R — Google review
I visited Kakegawa Castle, and it was such a beautiful and peaceful place! 🏯✨ The view from the top of the castle is amazing — you can see the whole city and the surrounding mountains. The castle itself is well-maintained and full of history. I really felt the traditional atmosphere of Japan while walking around the area. Perfect spot for history lovers and for anyone who wants to relax and enjoy scenic views. 🌸
Ralph M — Google review
Surprisingly interesting. While the castle is a reconstruction what makes this special is that the palace is original. Most of the Japanese castles no longer have the associated palace. It is well with going here if you’re in the vicinity. Be aware that all the explanations are in Japanese. We used Google translate to read them.
William K — Google review
Kakegawa Castle is a wonderfully restored historic site in Shizuoka that offers a rich and peaceful look into Japan’s samurai-era past. The main castle keep has been authentically rebuilt using traditional wooden construction techniques, giving it a distinct charm compared to the more modern reconstructions found elsewhere. Climbing to the top rewards you with sweeping views of Kakegawa city and the surrounding landscape. One of the highlights is the preserved Ni-no-Maru Palace next to the keep. This original structure lets you walk through tatami-floored rooms once used by the feudal lords, making it easy to imagine life during the Edo period. There’s also a small garden and tea house nearby where you can enjoy a quiet moment with matcha and wagashi (Japanese sweets). It’s only about a 10-minute walk from Kakegawa Station, and signage around the site is helpful even if you don’t speak Japanese. The entry fee is very reasonable, and the entire grounds are well-maintained. Whether you’re into Japanese history or just want a beautiful and calm place to explore, Kakegawa Castle is definitely worth a visit.

Didn't see all of the grounds or museum but the garden and castle were really nice. Be ready for the stairs up to as well as inside the castle.

Awesome experience and great history behind feudal Japan and how they did things. It was even more impressive on how they designed these palaces from the inside to outside and this was back in the 1400s. Very organized on how things were handled and the worst thing is that you can't take pictures of the inside of the palace, only outside.

Theme park
Outdoor Activities
Kakegawa Kachoen is a captivating theme park in Kakegawa city, Japan. It boasts one of the largest greenhouses in the country, where visitors can interact with birds and enjoy various flowers. The park offers bird shows, opportunities to feed the birds, and even take photos with penguins and owls. Additionally, guests can explore a water lily pond and an emu farm on the premises.
Shoebill and penguins are the highlight of the day. Only first 10 patrons can take pictures with penguins at a cost of ¥700. No more than 10 lucky person/family can enjoy this privilege. That says a lot about this zoo. They really care about the animals. Not using them as money machine. Entry fee is only about USD10. Come visit if you are in Nagoya or Mt Fuji area. You won’t regret.

If you love birds, you'll love this place! I easily spent over 2 hours here. You can feed the birds, but the sale of food ends at 3:30 PM, so be sure to arrive before that. At 3:30 PM, the birds will get fed, so you won't be able to go close to them while they eat, but it is adorable to see them all munching down on their meal. There are bird shows as well, but the outdoor show is only once per day. Highly recommend if you love birds!
R U — Google review
There are lots of different kids of birds walking around in the place. You can feed most of them too. It was my first time to see flamingos and toucans so up close. (You know in the zoo, they're far away form you.) When I brought my 3yo, flamingos looked down on her and she got really upset. So, it might be more enjoyable for kids who are older than elementary school age. This time, my kids were 8yo and 10yo, so they had no problem. There are various activities available, such as holding cute ducks and penguins. You can also put several different kids of owls on your arms. Thankfully, they have a variety of menu at the cafeteria. They even have hamburgers, and they were pretty good. My little one went with something unique that has a shape of a bird nest. She was really happy. It's a bit far from the nearest station, so we took a taxi on our way there from Kakegawa station. We wanted to explore a bit, so we walked back to the station. We will definitely go back again.

I came here for the first time in 10 years! I enjoyed interacting with birds as usual! This is the place where you can see many owls, penguin shows, and flamingos up close without fences and more! This time, I paid 500 yen separately and experienced doctor fish! Both children and adults can enjoy feeding!

Lovely little zoo, so many beautiful and friendly birds. Bring some cash so you can get food to feed them. The flowers in the seating area were also beautiful.
Nic L — Google review
This is a great place to visit, especially with kids! A variety of birds on display, many of which you can touch, pet and feed. It's an assault on the senses, especially the smell, but the place is quite clean and constantly being scrubbed -- especially the bird areas. The suspended flower garden entrance is enchanting, and the attached restaurant section is good for a bite or two. You get a chance to buy bird-related souvenirs on your way out. You can easily walk from the Kakegawa Station, and it's efinitely worth checking out.

The station has two island platforms with four tracks, and the Third Village station sign and notices on the platform were a delight. The station retains a nostalgic feel, with a red postbox in front of the station, traffic lights, a wooden station building, and a flat-surface access to the platform. The turntable still remains in operation in the depot, but you can't see it, along with the Spear of Longinus, unless you join a tour. This tour is paid and will end once capacity is reached. I'd like to participate next time. Since it was an Evangelion event, there were posters everywhere, and there was also a rubbing train, which I happened to come across. Museums
The Akino Fuku Art Museum is a unique architectural gem located on a hillside in Hamamatsu's Tenryu Ward, celebrating the work of artist Akino Fuku and other Japanese artists through permanent and temporary exhibitions. Born in 1908, Fuku was deeply inspired by her extensive travels abroad, incorporating elements from India, Afghanistan, Cambodia, and Africa into her Japanese art. The museum offers a serene setting with beautiful buildings and lawns.
Easy to get from Hamamatsu city with the train. I decided to get off at Nishi-kajima station and walk to the museum. It’s a 40min walk but the area is beautiful and easy to do. Museum is up a hill with a lot of beautiful nature around it. Staff was very kind and it was easy to get ticket and information with basic Japanese level. No pictures or videos are allowed inside the exhibition. You need to take off your shoes for the first floor, I enjoyed it. The building itself is very nice and the current exhibition is beautiful. Don’t miss the balcony before going out. Lovely discovery for me! On the way back I stopped by a small farmers market just 2 mins away and got some souvenirs from the area. Recommend this place!

(Translated by Google) It was built in Tenryu Ward, Hamamatsu City, the hometown of Japanese painter Fuku Akino, when he was around 90 years old. Opened in 1998, architect Terunobu Fujimori originally wanted to build it underground, but Fuku decided against it and instead built it on its current elevated location. Made extensive use of natural materials such as locally sourced Tenryu cedar, plaster, straw-mixed mortar, and a teppeishi (iron-shaped) roof, this unique building harmonizes with the surrounding greenery and is well worth a visit for architecture lovers!! What I found fascinating was the "shoe-free viewing" exhibition space. You take your shoes off at the entrance and enter the exhibition rooms barefoot or in socks. The huge rattan mats in Exhibition Room 1 were my first time seeing such a long span!! It felt so good under my feet! It seems they haven't been changed in 28 years, so rattan is really durable! Photography was prohibited inside the exhibition rooms, I wanted to at least take a photo of the floor. The second exhibition room is paved with white marble that isn't cut in a straight line, but grows larger from the center to the outside. It feels so cool and refreshing underfoot!! A staff member secretly told me, There's a round, raised area in the middle of the second exhibition room. I heard that Fuku and Fujimori buried stones they picked up from the Tenryu River there. When you tap on the marble tiles near the rounded area, the sound is different. The area around the rounded area is lighter, and you can tell that it's hollow inside. (*´艸`) It feels like a playful, romantic building. You can sit directly on the floor and relax while viewing the artworks. Although there aren't many pieces, the museum itself, apart from the artworks, is a large work of art, and if you pay attention to the small details like the walls, floors, stair railings, and doorknobs, you'll make some interesting discoveries. This style apparently originated from the architect Fujimori's idea that "shoes don't suit the pure character of Akino Fuku's work." It was a luxurious space where you could experience the quietude of the museum and the warmth of the materials. The museum houses approximately 330 works, including around 90 original paintings, including masterpieces such as Ganga. In addition to exhibitions of the museum's collection and special exhibitions, the second floor is also open to the public as a gallery. Located on a hill overlooking the town, it offers a special experience where the exhibitions, space, and scenery are integrated. Walking around the outside, the back staircase also has an unusual design that branches into two, which is very beautiful. Enjoy not only the paintings, but also the building and the approach to it!
