Wat Tha Ton is a captivating temple complex nestled in the hills of northern Thailand, just a stone's throw from the Burmese border. Originally featuring only its main stupa, this serene site has expanded to accommodate an influx of visitors, adding several structures that enhance its grandeur. Perched atop a hill, Wat Tha Ton offers breathtaking views of nearby villages and the river winding below.
A must-see temple when you are around in the area. Great views!

Still lovely, but it used to be an international meditation centre, and now it is all locked up.

A must do / see when you are in the area. Absolute beautiful and great view on the area.

Breath taking and a must see. The Temple spans on multiple levels of the mountain overlooking the valley. This is definitely worth a stop. Don’t forget to donate. They have a free kitchen for those in need and feed the needy. Good people building credit...jump in and do the same.

Nice main hall, nice views, worth a pit stop if in the area. We saw monks in a classroom working on their school work, too.
Petra C — Google review
The temple stay at the base of mountain nearby the river Gok. The pagoda was built on the top of mountain where people can enjoy the panoramic view of Gok river and the Burma frontier. In the early morning, one can also enjoy the huge of foggy that cover all here.

(Translated by Google) In Pattaya, my wife and I purchased an excursion “The Golden Triangle and the North of Thailand”. They picked us up from our hotel in Pattaya and took us to the airport, along with other tourists. The flight from Bangkok to Chiang Rai lasted only 1 hour. In the evening we checked into an eco hotel, upon arrival we had a massage and then dinner. We slept soundly, as the hotel is located in a mountainous area. On the second day our adventure became more and more exciting. We visited mountain tribes, tea plantations, fruit plantations, and the Golden Triangle. Thanathon Orchard is a delightful orange farm and garden that offers visitors a pleasant experience. The entrance is free, and for a small fee, you can take a tram ride through the farm to enjoy the picturesque surroundings and gardens. While there, you can pluck some delicious oranges from the trees or purchase freshly squeezed orange juice at the shop. The oranges are juicy and refreshing, making them perfect for quenching your thirst. Additionally, you can capture beautiful moments with lovely photos of the area.

Stopped here many times for a rest from driving on the way to Thaton. I can't describe how good the juice is. Ice cold freshly squeezed. Also newly picked oranges at 25 baht a kilo ,baby bananas that are delicious, coffee, gifts and other snacks. Clean rest rooms nice staff. Don't pass it by. Take a break.

Entrance to the Orange Farm and gardens is free and so is the ride over the farm to the gardens in the back. From there you can take lovely pictures of the area and in the gardens. Dont forget to buy some banana chips (only 10 bht) and some fresh orange juice.

Safuaria 7 — Google review
Lovely! Better than expected. It's only 40 baht to enter and you're driven around by open bus up to a nice viewing area which is good for a walk around and photos. The trip takes about 30 minutes and the orange juice you can buy is delicious. Check it out....
Ann S — Google review
We didn't walk through the orchard, just a short distance along a path but I guess it summed it all. Quite pleasant although the weather was pretty hot. We did pluck a few oranges off the trees just to test them out and they were delicious. Back at the shop, we tried out the freshly squeezed orange juices and were very sweet. The oranges themselves were also delightfully thirst quencers, the meat so juicy. Worth a visit.

A great place to stop and buy souvenirs. The people were so friendly and it was great to see a little into their lifestyle and culture.

Strange place with empty and broken stalls at the entrance (around 300 m from main road), without people around 10:00 in the morning. They want 150,-BTH/person and we wasn’t sure if we will see something. We decided not to by a pig in a poke. It looks like tourist trap.

Mountain peak
Nature & Parks
Doi Mae Salong, located 74 km northwest of Chiang Rai city, offers picturesque and serene mountain views with lush hillsides and a range of interesting villages. The area is known for its Chinese immigrant community, which adds to the unique cultural experience. Visitors can explore tea plantations and enjoy the clean, green surroundings while tasting local teas or coffees at village restaurants. It's recommended to have Thai Baht on hand as there are no currency exchange services available in the area.
Worth the trip from Chiang Rai, because less travelled and excellent road conditions! During the whole day I didn’t see any tourists on this route. Bring a jacket and even long trousers because on the top it’s rather cold!

There are many provinces and Districts in Thailand. Among the many listed tourist attractions is Mae Salong, this hilltop village nestled in the mountainous range of Chiang Rai province. Before you can enjoy the many scenic landscapes, you must first endure the long and winding roads before arriving at this captivating destination that offers beautiful, breathtaking landscapes with rich cultural heritage. This hilltop village is located very near the Myanmar border, this peaceful village once occupied by the Kuomintang offers panoramic views, cool mountain fresh air, and a unique insight into the lives of the local villages. Mae Salong, a Chinese Yunnanese village established by former Kuomintang soldiers who settled here after fleeing China. As a result, Mae Salong has a distinctive cultural character—where Thai, Chinese, and tribal traditions harmoniously coexist. You can stroll through the village, sample authentic Yunnanese cuisine, and enjoy local tea from the many hill plantations. When in Mae Salong without visiting Santikhiri Village is like mission UN accomplished, known for its high-quality oolong tea, and many have purchased take home locally grown blends tea as souvenirs. For those coming here for a different path seeking spiritual co-existence, then Wat Santitham and nearby temples offer serene spots for enhancement, set against the backdrop of misty mountains and lush valleys. The winding roads leading up to Mae Salong are a journey in themselves a unique experience —offering stunning views and a chance to first hand witness rural life styles at its origin in northern Thailand. Mae Salong offers a unique blend that differs from other hill retreats, its historical heritage and memorable experience at lessons not found in text books. Come and experience for yourselves the historical chapters of this wonderful places. -------------- A Like would be very much appreciated if this review help in any way.

It is not only a very nice trip up here with a motorbike but the town is interesting. After the chinese civil war a number of chinese soldiers settled here and their influence is characteristic for the place until today. Construction areas and new buildings everywhere.. Fast structural growth.
Oscar D — Google review
Very similar to Mon Jam. A lot of tea plantation and hotels with a great view. Enjoyed with a car driving as well if you like driving through the mountains:))) worth the visit
Majesticy — Google review
Long high roads, little villages, views to die for. Lots of food options - stalls and roadside. Views from Chedi and wats amazing. Step back into the past.
Zany — Google review
Mae Salong is best explored by driving, as the attractions are fairly far apart. Love the cool weather and Chinese Yunan food and culture. Enjoy the mountain view, tea plantation, hilltop temple and try the local food. Stay a night, or two.
Hi D — Google review
Worth a visit if you're a tea enthusiast. It's advisable to go in a car with a more powerful engine than a sedan.
OneBag N — Google review
A town from where you can start visit the local tea plantation. Better to have an accommodation in Chiang Rai and then to get there. I had the sunset and was very good. The road is fantastic and you will see great landscape.

Phra That Chedi Srinagarindra Stit Maha Santi Khiri

Place of worship
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Phrathat Chedi Srinagarindra Stit Maha Santi Khiri offers a spectacular view, especially at sunset and in the evening when the outside of the wat is illuminated. However, it can be eerie as Phrathat is not lit. The steep and winding roads make it challenging to reach, especially for small cars or scooters. Inside the main building, visitors can see a special Buddha on level 3 and admire Thai-style stained glass.
It's a nice and quiet place on top of a mountain, I loved it here. The view was special, not crowded at all, which was nice after all the crowded city sanctuaries. Parking was easy, although the parking lot is not very big.
Petae86 — Google review
Nice temple, nothing extraordinary - with nice views. For the sunset better stop a few hundred meters before the temple on the other side of the mountain.
Matt ( — Google review
I was here at 9am in low season. I was the only person. magical place. steps up from the Buddhist temple a bit lower down. be careful when it's wet - a little slippery. free entry.
Flamesdean — Google review
Was told its almost the highest spot at Mae Salong. A memorial Pagoda build by the Thai King for his Mother. Nice scenery. Well maintained and clean. You could climb up the step for a better viewing.
Hao T — Google review
This is my Hometown, I'm a private guide driver in Chiang Rai.
Dao R — Google review
Spectacular view. We went around 7 PM and it was deserted, the cafe closed and the buildings locked. But the view was still amazing at sunset and evening, and you can still walk around to see the outside of the wat, which is illuminated in the evening. Phrathat is not lit in the evening, and is rather eerie! Our small car had a few issues and I think it would be very difficult to reach on a scooter. Trucks probably do better on the steep, winding roads!
Panda U — Google review
Great Thai + Buddhism memorial architecture. At the 3rd flr. you will find the finest series paintings about all public figures concerning this project. Thai style stain glass is stunning . Enjoy panorama view and cool air up there.
Nunta N — Google review
I visited this beautiful place by my city car (1200 cc Nissan Almera). I need to drove backward at the last steep slope (the one-way circle). This is not a road under high way department's standard, It's too much steep for most cars and most By-car tourists. It's too much dangerous if you are not familiar with driving on the mountain. This is a serious warning!

A good place to visit when u are on the way but not for detour or purposely visit
Mi H — Google review
This is a peaceful wat, unfortunately on the date of our visit, the drive path up to the mountain top (where the pagoda is) was blocked by a huge pile of sand as part of the wat was under construction. You can still climb up to the pagoda, make sure you give yourself plenty time if you're catching sunset there.
Meiyi U — Google review
Prepare for a lot of steps, but there are plenty of rest pavilions on the way. The main temple was under construction when we went, but you could still go inside. Very different from others.

Tea Plantation 101 Doi Mae Salong

Sights & Landmarks
Store
Doi Mae Salong, nestled in the picturesque Chiang Rai province of northern Thailand, is a hidden gem renowned for its breathtaking tea plantations and cool climate. This area boasts a rich cultural tapestry, having been settled by Chinese Kuomintang soldiers who brought with them Yunnanese traditions. Once primarily an opium-producing region, Doi Mae Salong transitioned to tea farming in the 1980s under government encouragement.
Doi Mae Salong, located in northern Thailand’s Chiang Rai province, is famous for its stunning tea plantations, cool climate, and rich cultural history. Here’s a quick guide to tea plantations in Doi Mae Salong: 1. History & Background Originally settled by Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) soldiers fleeing China after the civil war, Doi Mae Salong has a strong Yunnanese influence. The region was once known for opium cultivation, but in the 1980s, the Thai government encouraged a shift to tea farming. Today, it is a major center for high-quality oolong tea production. 2. Tea Varieties Grown Oolong Tea (especially No. 12 and No. 17) – The most famous tea here, known for its floral and smooth taste. Green Tea – Some plantations also grow high-altitude green tea. Pu-erh Tea – Though more common in Yunnan, some farmers produce fermented tea varieties. 3. Best Tea Plantations to Visit 101 Tea Plantation – One of the largest and most famous tea estates in the area, offering tea tasting, guided tours, and panoramic views. Wang Put Tan Tea Plantation – Another well-known plantation with high-quality oolong and beautiful surroundings. 4. Tea Tasting & Buying Most plantations offer free tea tastings. Popular purchases include loose-leaf teas, compressed tea cakes, and tea-related souvenirs. 5. Best Time to Visit November to February – The cool season offers pleasant weather, misty mornings, and beautiful views. Tea harvests take place throughout the year, but winter months provide a great atmosphere for tea tourism.
OWN U — Google review
Nice views with some tea sampling:) locals should arrange some guided tours and tea sampling with smaller poetismus but more flawours of tea… but definitely worthy trip:-)

We spent 2 nights. Loved how calm it was, the room had amazing view on the plantation. Breakfast - simple, but we didn't come there for that. We also loved the tea itself.
Dorota C — Google review
Closed during raining saison... Pay attention ! In any case, the area is beautiful and other coffee have good tea to taste.

Absolutely stunning and better overall experience than another very famous tea plantation...because there are less tourists here. It is a bit of a more authentic place. Delicious tea of course and tea drinks.

Doi Tung Royal Villa

Mentioned on
7 lists
Sights & Landmarks
Castles
Doi Tung Royal Villa, located in the Mae Fah Luang district, was the former royal summer residence of Her Royal Majesty Princess Mother. The villa is built in an eclectic Lanna-Swiss chalet style and features a night sky ceiling studded with stars in the main hall. Visitors can explore the botanical park, gardens, rock formations, and museum on the premises for a nominal fee.
Doi Tung Palace, I went during the New Year period at the beginning of the year, it was a good time to go to the palace because there will be a garden arrangement, local exchange for Thai and foreign tourists, both food and trade, each year's theme is different, but what I like the most is the inside of the palace, inside is like a semi-museum to be able to visit the area that I like the most is the balcony area that overlooks the garden below and is very beautiful. I like to visit every year. I give it a reputation in my heart. It is the most ideal thing for me.
Panthita K — Google review
Doi Tung Palace is a summer residence of King Mother, located in northern Thailand's highlands, near the border with Myanmar. King built this residence for his mother as she lived a portion of her life in Switzerland, delighted with mountain houses there. Northern Thailand, with its highlands and mild temperatures seemed the most suitable place for it. Upon King's orders it was built in a fusion of a Swiss chalet and Lanna style houses. For anyone who's visited any European chateau (palace) it's nothing to write home about, but considering it's in Far East it's worth visiting if on the way. Audio guide is included in the ticket and gives some interesting insights. Best part are the gardens beneath, nicely manicured and cared for
Dejan B — Google review
If you want to visit a royal garden, better in Chiang Mai. But in a good weather day after non stop raining, it was great to visit this little cosy garden. Enjoy
Marzia F — Google review
The garden was beautiful, full of many different varieties of flowers! Th entrance costed us 90THB/person to visit only the garden. You can also rent golf cart if you prefer that. The best time to visit is during winter season Dec-Jan. When I visited this place on Jan 11th, the weather was perfect! There are some coffee stalls inside the garden. You can enjoy your coffee while admiring the scenery. I will go back next winter!
Rachel — Google review
Stunning, highly recommend if you visit Chiang Rai. A photographers dream👌 It shows open till 6pm, however we arrived 5:15pm only to find it closes at 5pm 😅
Kevin M — Google review
The house was the best spot of my Chiang Rai trip. The audio guide given was clear and the house was very well-maintained. You can learn about the life of the mother of King rama 9. The way she improve that area to what is called Doi Tung nowadays. However, you don't have to buy the whole package ticket that cost 220 THB for 3 places tickets coz 1 place, the garden - i don't remembered the name but it's a long one, is very old and there's nothing in there.
U-Maraj S — Google review
It's a very nice place to visit it self, a little uncomfortable, need to plan accordingly, the shops around have unrealistic prices and there is only one toilet at the main entrance
Maria G — Google review
This royal "palace", home of the late Princess Mother and one of her daughters, is one of the most amazing buildings in the country. Since Her Royal Highness spent most of her life in Switzerland, this royal villa has been built for her in the mountains of Northern Thailand in a style of a Swiss log chalet, though with traditional Thai Lanna (Northern style) decoration. So spectacular! And it's also so amazing, how industrious and moderate at the same time was the life of that wonderful lady.

Located about 60 kilometers from Chiang Rai city, Mae Fah Luang Garden is a renowned attraction named after the Princess Mother. Part of the Doi Tung Development Project, this 10-acre garden offers stunning views and colorful displays of plants and flowers. The landscaped gardens were created to provide locals with the chance to enjoy a temperate flower garden. Visitors can explore various viewing platforms, small greenhouses, and a coffee shop offering delicious espresso made from locally grown and roasted coffee beans.
A beautiful garden located in the hills outside of Chiang Rai. The creation of the wife of King Rama IX, you can spend hours in the stunning gardens as well as visiting the lovely royal lodge. Make sure you add this to your itinerary, you won’t regret it !

It was ok, pretty gardens, but to be honest definitely not one of our favourite gardens and it’s a really long way to get here. I wouldn’t go again or recommend unless you happen to be passing by.

We've been there many times but never miss the chance when in Chiangrai. There is a bit of walking up and down. Free wheelchairs are available. This time, you could also rent a golf cart for 500 baht for 30 minutes or 1,000 for an hour.

Very beautiful gardens, give yourself about 45 minutes to an hours to enjoy.

We came to the park in the low season and were practically alone there. The pond and a number of flower beds were under reconstruction. The park was open until 5pm, but you could walk there later. There are discounts on tickets for residents and seniors.

Beautiful gardens and very popular place to take photos with the flowers. It seems the gardeners are constantly on the move replacing flower beds past their best with new flowers to keep the gardens looking colourful. There are several viewing platforms and places to sit within the grounds as well as several small greenhouses. I highly recommend the coffee shop for an espresso before you enter the gardens, totally delicious and made from coffee beans grown and roasted in the Thai mountains.

Mae Fah Luang Garden is located in Doi Tung area (also including nearby Doi Tung Royal Villa, Hall of Inspiration). It has fountain, beautiful flowers decorated with different concept for your visit, looking or posing pictures. And the key highlight here is The sculpture "Continuity", ends of the Garden to exit gate. Must visit when you arrive Chiang Rai. 2/2019

This garden is well worth the drive up from Chiang Rai. Such a beautiful and well maintained garden. Entry is 90b for adults and 45b for seniors. Wander along the many pathways, check out the flowers and view of surrounding mountains, or just relax on one of the many shady benches. And don't forget to check out the orchid exhibit, for sure the largest assortment of lady slippers I've ever seen in one place. The garden is huge, so even if there's a crowd you can still find a little spot of your own. When I was there, the treetop section was closed, so keep that in mind before making the drive, if your heart was set on that. Clean toilets at the entry and inside, and a small coffee stand and ice cream stand inside. Just down the road (short walk) are some food sellers and a handicraft section.

Doi Tung, a 1389m mountain in northern Thailand, offers a variety of attractions including a Buddhist temple, tribal culture museum, and botanical gardens. Once troubled by drug issues, it has transformed into a beacon of sustainability and natural beauty. The verdant hillsides provide a serene escape while the Mae Fah Luang Garden showcases native flora. The Doi Tung Royal Villa offers insight into its royal history. Visitors praise the peaceful atmosphere and impressive views over three countries from the garden.
For flower lovers who also enjoy the mountains. A botanical garden set in the jungle with views towards Burma. One hour car ride from Chiang Rai. There isn’t much to eat on site apart from some fruit sellers and a burger bar. 90 bhat entry.

Free shuttles to get to the gardens. Nicely maintained and very peaceful. The skywalk isn't functioning nor is the ziplines. Lucky we only came for the gardens and they were very pretty.

Very peaceful place to visit. A unique gem of design and wooden art. Very easy to visit and multilingual audio player is provided at the entrance. Impressive view over 3 country and a huge garden with a large variety of flowers and plants from all over the world. Clean air and magic atmosphere in the middle of mountains. Definitely a place to visit in Thailand,

Nice place to go, December would be best to see colorful flowers and the weather is very pleasant. There are flower festivals in front of the Mae Fah Luong Garden. Love it.

The Royal Villa was amazing. You can see Chiang Rai scenery from above the hills. Just once in a while you should visit.

It’s a nice place but it’s not something that is a must since it’s quite far from the nearest city. If you’re a Doi Tung coffee fan then I guess you’d like to be here. There’s a flower garden, some rock trail and the former kings mothers resort (?), which you can pay for 90baht each for entrance. I really liked the views and the resort that has limited but access to public.

Wat Phra That Doi Wao

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Famous for its large scorpion statue, this ancient Buddhist temple offers scenic, panoramic views.
Good experience coming up here to see interesting stuffs. There is a skywalk available for a fee. The main stair is closed for renovation. You would have to use the road, which is not recommended for pedestrians. The round trip transportation would cost 30 bath. This is recommended. Not much parking space onsite.

The place is rich with emotion, solemn and surreal. It feels like you're standing between two worlds, where one country lies just behind you, and another unfolds before your eyes. They're only steps apart, yet their stories feel miles away. May the people of Myanmar find peace beyond the silence, strength in the struggle, and hope that rises with every sunrise. The world sees you, and prays for the day your hearts can rest. 🙏🫂

Wat Phra That Doi Wao is an incredible place to visit, especially at sunset. The views over Mae Sai and into Myanmar are absolutely amazing, with the golden light making the temple shine even more beautifully. The atmosphere is peaceful, and since monks live here, you get a real sense of the spiritual energy of the place. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Very unique purple temple with big black Scorpio out front and a skywalk over looking Burma! You can park down the hill at the temple for ฿10 and take a shuttle up for ฿30 but I did see cars and scooters alike getting all the way to the top. Keep in mind that if you take the shuttle they do start you from the back . I kept looking for the scorpion temple and I didn’t see it until I got up to the skywalk and then I understood that I was brought from the back instead of the front. This is definitely one of Thailand‘s most unique temples as there’s a lot to do and explore and the location of it is very unique. There are cafés and restaurants here as well. The skywalk is 50 baht and I highly suggest you do it.

Everything (almost) in this temple is painted in all shades of purple. From the fence down the the hill to the lamposts, benches and tiles, they're all purple. The elephant statues, Buddha statues, naga etc are constructed really well. There are some ongoing construction and expansion and Saturday was very busy. Nonetheless, the temple is beautiful and the concept (color) is one for the books.

The most beautiful temple in Tachileik if you got a chance to visit this city you can’t miss this one
Knot P — Google review
The pagoda has a peaceful atmosphere. It is a good place to sit down and meditate, but there is one thing: there's a lady who will follow your every step trying to be the "guide" and trying to force you to buy the gold leaf to stick on the pagoda. I was trying to have a peaceful time at the pagoda, admiring the pagoda and the views that it gave from the area, but that very lady always follows you to try to convince you to buy the gold leaf. I don't know if playing badminton in the pagoda's compound isn't allowed, but I saw two kids playing badminton within the pagoda's compound. Overall, I would give it a five stars if it wasn't for the lady that follows you everywhere, but it is a very peaceful atmosphere there. I went there in December, but forgot to give a review on this place.

Right now it's under renovation - what a bummer. There's a lady who tried to guide us around with her poorly English to force us to buy a gold leaf for the Buddha, very annoying because she won't leave us alone. The place has nice view but you have to take your shoe off and walk bare foot on hot tiles.

Im talking about Pagoda, not the school as G Maps directed me to. Absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing. A must see point during a short trip from Thailand across the border town Tchaichelik.
Mirosław S — Google review
A good monument with plenty of peripheral attractions. A much smaller copy of Yangon's famous Shwedagon Pagoda. It's at the top of a hill with good views of Tachileik and across to Thailand. It's in the centre of a very spacious area, around which are various shops and alternative attractions. Quite clean now (you have to remove shoes in this area) and the area seems clear of drug addicts which were a problem in the past. Many vendors will accost you though. Best attraction when in Tachileik.

A clone Shewdagon Pagoda of the original one in Yangon. The atmosphere is not so different from the original one. A good place to chill with your friends, family, your partner or just alone. Must come and feel it once during your stay in this city.
Sai N — Google review
An uphill challenge from border crossing. You'll have to remove your shoes before you can enter the place. There are vendors just right outside the area where you can buy coconut and other Myanmar gift items.
Abigael C — Google review
There's a difference between a Pagoda (a tiered tower with multiple eaves ) and a Buddhist temple, a structure designed to symbolize 5 elements: Fire, Air, Earth, Water, and Wisdom. Meanwhile enjoy your trip back into the 6th and 10th centuries AD exploring Shwedagon Pagoda, an easy walk from the border and make it a point to get in without paying the silly fee.

Huge, scenic tea plantation offering tours & a gift shop, plus a modern cafe with a terrace.
Beautiful terraced tea fields are perfect for photos, especially at sunrise or sunset. A peaceful escape with fresh air and wide-open spaces. The modern cafe offers great views and tasty tea-infused drinks and desserts like the popular green tea cake.

If you are anywhere near Chiang Rai, make a detour for the Choui Fong Tea Plantation—it is truly a spectacular destination. From the moment you arrive, the views are simply breathtaking. The endless, rolling hills of vibrant green tea bushes, meticulously terraced across the landscape, are a sight to behold and offer some of the most stunning photo opportunities in Northern Thailand. It’s an incredibly peaceful and serene escape from the city hustle. The modern cafe is the perfect spot to relax. Not only does it offer panoramic views of the entire plantation, but the selection of tea-based drinks and desserts is superb. The matcha green tea cake and iced green tea are particular highlights—fresh, flavourful, and the perfect complement to the view. The plantation is well-maintained, the air is crisp, and the atmosphere is wonderfully tranquil. Whether you're a devoted tea enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for an unforgettable scenic spot, Choui Fong is an essential stop. Do not leave Chiang Rai without experiencing this beautiful place!

Choui Fong Tea Plantation in Chiang Rai is one of the most scenic stops in northern Thailand. Rolling green hills stretch in perfect rows, with a peaceful café overlooking the valley. You can sample their signature teas — the iced matcha and oolong are standouts — while taking in the cool breeze and panoramic view. It’s touristy but beautifully maintained, with photo spots. Best visited in the morning for softer light and fewer crowds.

The local tea maker is close to Chiang Mai and offers wide ranges of locally produced teas. When you enter the tea plantation you can spot the high mountains of tea trees. At the top in the head office they provide tea samples and it has an amazing roof top cafe that you can relax your tea and the amazing views. This is a good spot if you like to visit a local tea plantation in Chiang Mai.

entering the establishment you can really feel a sense of well thought out design. It had a refreshing view of the plantation and you get to try their tea. Outside of the tea, the architecture and the view, I was expecting more from the food. Pretty standard cafe levels, nothing too amazing, but good enough :)

They also got a shop where you can find different kinds of tea, I highly recommend the Oolong tea osmanthus flower - so aromatic & tastes fantastic!

The area is beautiful. It would be nice to have some information about the tea production. There are no tours. The café is nice and the view is amazing. Come for the view and for lunch. Go for a walk and enjoy. P.s. The fried tea leaves have no flavor. Don’t recommend. The pork dumplings are good. Pps. It’s impossible to find a grab/taxi to take you back to chiang rai. Keep in mind

(Translated by Google) I don't usually care much about customer service, but a while ago I went to buy some Shiopan from the bakery. The package said it only uses bread baking ingredients, but I asked if it could be used in the oven because I saw a review that said it could be done, and I ordered it yesterday. However, today I was informed that it couldn't be used because "the milk inside will burn the oven." I don't mind the part about not being able to use it, but the information and customer service might not have been accurate. Is there butter or milk inside? I didn't detect any milk or the taste of it when I ate it. Then, they should have said "Can't make it," apologized, and asked if they were still accepting orders. Regarding the number of customers, you can ask the shop to check again. I'd like them to try to adjust this. And if the bread can't be put in the oven, where is it made? Or is it put in a rice cooker? You can tell me your suggestion. You could add buttered baking paper. The Long Neck Karen Village, located in Chiang Mai, is a unique destination where visitors can immerse themselves in the culture and traditions of various tribes. The village is home to different tribes such as the Meo people with their stilt houses, the Palongs known for tea, and the Karen people who are skilled weavers. One of the main attractions is observing the Karen women wearing metal bracelets around their necks, legs, and forearms.
A unique experience that supports 5 refugee hill tribes, who moved here over 30 years ago. It’s a lot like an outdoor ikea for colorful handmade gifts, with photo opportunities along the way. The land is beautiful to walk through. The tribes people are generally happy. The environment was clean. Many I saw had cell phones (which to me is like they are no worse off than anyone else really.). I bought a number of gifts, and I think the expectation is you buy some things, in addition to paying the entrance fee. If you are comfortable with that, then I do recommend the experience. It’s really a great opportunity to get gifts for friends and family.
Tom C — Google review
This place has a few tribes where they are gathered in different villages. As you enter, you need to pay 300 Baht per person. The walkabout covers the different villages and the last being the Karen tribe with the long neck. Each village will have their display and sale of traditional handicrafts. You can take photos with them.
Irene C — Google review
300 bht entry fee. Buy water before you head down, there’s no food or drink until you return to the entry which could take some time. The map sucks. Like really sucks 😂 it’s super confusing and we definitely got lost. If you see red arrows just follow them and eventually you will end up where you’re supposed to be. There are basic toilet facilities. Nothing flash, take toilet paper. The first village we came to had some pushy store vendors but don’t be put off by them. The guy in the first village with the arrow shooting is great fun. Every other village we passed through the people were lovely. The English is quite limited but they were happy to greet us and show us all the wares they were hand making. There is a lady you can pay to take photos with. All the prices are very reasonable and it’s quite a humbling place to visit. Well worth it.
Julz P — Google review
This is probable one of the most fascinating village tribe that I have visited in my life. Entrance is 300bt which is used to support the local community living in the village. Once you enter you get to see the locals busy working on products to sell to tourists. As a way of support we have bought couple of items, please support them if you do visit the family. You will understand what I mean if you visit the village..
Bedri — Google review
Visiting the Long Neck Karen (Kayan) Village near Chiang Rai was a unique and emotional experience for our family. We had read about it before arriving, but being there in person was a whole different feeling. The women and girls with their traditional brass neck coils were striking to see, and we learned that the rings don’t actually lengthen the neck—they push down the collarbone and compress the rib cage over time. The village is mostly set up like a cultural showcase, with small wooden huts selling souvenirs and handicrafts. We walked through narrow pathways where the residents smiled and waved, occasionally offering their crafts for sale. While no one pressured us to buy anything, it did feel a little bit like a tourist setup. There’s an entry fee, and the whole experience can feel commercialized if you don’t approach it with the right mindset. Still, the women were gracious and warm, especially when we took the time to chat (with the help of a guide). Their lives are shaped by a mix of tradition, necessity, and tourism. We made it a point to buy a few handmade items—not just as souvenirs, but as a small way of giving back. This visit made us think a lot. On one hand, it’s a rare opportunity to witness a unique and ancient tradition. On the other, there’s an uneasy feeling about how much of it is for show, and how much is genuine cultural preservation. If you go, go respectfully. Go with curiosity, not just for photos, but to learn about their stories. It’s a chance to reflect on how culture, livelihood, and tourism intersect.
Crumpled N — Google review
The Long Neck Karen Village near Chiang Rai offers a glimpse into the traditions of the Padaung (Karen) community, many of whom are refugees from Myanmar. Visitors can see women wearing the iconic brass neck rings and watch traditional weaving and crafts. Entrance is inexpensive, and travelers often bring small gifts like school supplies for the children, which is greatly appreciated. While the cultural display can feel a bit staged, visiting early in the day helps avoid crowds. A brief stop that provides insight into local heritage, approached with respect and curiosity.
Noel M — Google review
It's a nice place to see hill tribe people. You can rent authentic dresses and hats for photos and talk with the people in the village. There are many women wearing neck rings towards the end and some children are wearing practice rings as well (just for practice, kids won't wear them all day!). There are many souvenirs for sale as well. Entrance fee: 300B for foreigners and 200 for Thai people. Renting a dress will be 50B. Don't forget to be politand give some money when you want to take a photo with one of the villagers.
Michael — Google review
It's a big Scam. Don't waste your time. First you pay 300 baht entry fee (200 for thai). Then you walk on a muddy road thru the forest, see abandoned houses. Later some old people try to sell tourist items, which you can find at any night market. If you are lucky, you will see some long neck woman.

Chiang Saen District, located in the northern part of Chiang Rai province in Thailand, serves as an important trade hub along the upper Mekong River. Situated near the renowned 'Golden Triangle' border area with Myanmar and Laos, this small town offers a diverse mosaic of wetland habitats that attract birdwatchers seeking various resident and migratory species. However, recent development for tourism and commerce has led to a decline in its natural appeal for birds and wildlife.

Located near the Golden Triangle, the House of Opium Museum offers a fascinating collection that delves into the history of opium trade in the region. The museum showcases antique knives, scales, and pipes, providing insight into the opium cultivation that was once a major source of income for local communities in Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. As part of efforts to combat this trade, governments have worked to create alternative sources of income such as farming and tourism.

The House of Opium Museum in Chiang Rai is a fascinating and eye-opening stop for anyone interested in the history of the Golden Triangle. The museum traces the region’s opium trade from its historical roots to modern-day efforts to curb cultivation, using photographs, artifacts, and informative displays. The exhibits are thoughtfully arranged, giving context without being overwhelming. It’s a compact but highly educational visit, best taken with some time to read the displays and reflect on the complex history of the area.

Edit: I used the word didn’t instead of did and that made it seem like I didn’t enjoy the experience. When in fact it was the complete opposite. I enjoyed how simple and to the point it was. There are two museums that are all about opium, but this one is the one that’s closest to the Golden triangle, however, it is a bit smaller. I did enjoy this one because it was more childlike, it was direct into the point versus the other museum that’s much bigger and dives deep. Things in this museum feel more hands-on and interactive and in your face that’s why I say it seems more childlike. Also, cool, fun fact the ticket they give you is actually a postcard and you get to choose which one you like and at the end you get to stamp it with a bunch of different things, including the date. When I went entrance was ฿50

I didn’t expect to be so fascinated, but this museum completely blew me away! It’s easily one of my favorite places I’ve visited in Thailand. Unlike many other sites that don’t offer much background information, the Hall of Opium is filled with rich details about the entire history of opium — from its origins and trade routes to how different tribes used it for income or personal use. They even included different legends on opium. There are even unexpected and interesting sections, like information about the giant catfish in the nearby river! The exhibits are beautifully presented, and the craftsmanship of the opium pipes is stunning — they’re like pieces of art. I was on a tour but ended up staying much longer because there was just so much to take in. If you’re anywhere near the Golden Triangle, make this a top priority — it’s absolutely one of the top three things to do in the area.

Very detailed exhibits and immersive without technology! The description are in English and narratives well depicted in photos and artifacts. A good 30 mins to 1 hour experience, depends when you have to leave the area on the journey back.
Niki L — Google review
This region used to be the land of opiums grown by hill-tribe communites before diverted to other agricultural activities. This museum tells the story of opiums in the northern part of Thailand with a massive influence from Myanmar and China linking to conflicts with neighboring countries including the Opium War.
Missberry M — Google review
Stepping into the House of Opium Museum in Chiang Saen was like uncovering a forgotten chapter of Southeast Asia’s past. It’s a small museum, but packed with a fascinating collection of artifacts that trace the opium trade’s deep-rooted history in the Golden Triangle region. The visit begins through a dim tunnel leading into a poppy field replica, setting a surprisingly immersive tone. Inside, you’ll find an eclectic range of historical items—opium pipes, weights, tribal tools, photographs, and more—each telling a piece of the complex story of cultivation, trade, addiction, and colonial entanglement. I was particularly struck by how personal and intimate the experience felt. The English signage made it accessible, and the exhibits—though compact—were thoughtfully curated. Despite its small size, we easily spent nearly an hour there. The museum staff were friendly and helpful, and we even received a complimentary postcard with our entry ticket, which was a sweet gesture. It’s not flashy, but it’s sincere—and a real eye-opener into a part of the region’s past that’s often overlooked. If you’re in the Golden Triangle or Chiang Saen, don’t miss this gem. It’s well worth the stop.

The Golden Triangle, located at the meeting point of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos where the Mekong River divides into two streams, offers a unique opportunity to witness three countries at once. This area was historically notorious for opium production but has now become an educational park. Visitors can take guided boat tours to travel between the countries within minutes and learn about the region's intriguing history.
The Golden Triangle was a beautiful experience! Lots of shops to explore, Opium museum, and a relaxing boat ride with amazing views, including glimpses of the casinos and mountains in Laos and scenery in Myanmar. Definitely worth a visit!

We came here as wanted to see the 3 rivers meet. To be honest it wasn't really worth the visit. Not much to do here at all . They had several stalls with the locals crocheting bags and hats which I do wish I did buy from here as they were lovely and cheaper than any where else even though they are cheap enough in general but you would pay double in the south. Lovely hand made candles aswell.

We drove up here from Chiang Rai which took just over an hour on the scooter. We knew it wasn’t going to be breathtaking so the expectations were not high, we did however thoroughly enjoy our trip here (including the journey!) Nice long highways to get there, very easy to follow on the map. Cool to see the three different countries all in one place. There are many stalls to buy souvenirs and snacks. There are also a few different spots to take photos from. It’s not an incredible view as you can see from the photos but it’s definitely cool to see and say you’ve been there! A nice road trip too :)
Leo G — Google review
I was underwhelmed. Signs all need redoing and are hard to read. Vendors in stalls mostly rude or disinterested in our custom. Place is pretty run down. Roadworks on the journey add extra travel time and result in many places to stop along the way being closed. Check it out if you’re close to tick off the list but o wouldn’t bother making the trip from Chiang Mai especially for it.

Visiting the Golden Triangle was like stepping into a living history book layered with beauty, mystery, and a hint of danger. The Museum of Opium offers a deep and sobering look into how this region once fueled a global trade — both devastating and defining for generations. Just across the river lies a stark contrast: a modern island glittering with a large casino and luxury facades, reportedly tied to Chinese criminal networks and dark operations like human trafficking and online “romance” schemes. It’s surreal to stand at the crossroads of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar — where ancient traditions, political tensions, and modern vice all collide. The views are stunning, the history is heavy, and the atmosphere carries an undeniable energy that feels both beautiful and unsettling. A must-see for those curious about the realities beneath Southeast Asia’s serene surface. Would you like me to make a shorter version optimized for Google Maps (around 3 sentences, more traveler-focused but still intriguing)?

This is the most touristic place along the Mekong River. Hundreds of buses and visitors from all over the world. Probably historically interesting, but I wouldn't go there for another time. A lot of other places with a great view at the river. If you are there and like tea, prices for local products are good. The following questions do not make sense. There is no fee or tickets for this place. Perhaps they mean the opium museum. But I was not there.

It was interesting to see where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos come together, but beyond the geographical interest it wasn’t spectacular. The detail and history about “No man’s land” in the middle of the 3 countries was very interesting, though. Well explained by a tour guide.

Wat Phra That Chom Kitti, located just north of the walled city of Chiang Saen, is a serene mountain temple with a crooked Lanna-style pagoda that houses a fragment of the Buddha relic. The temple's history dates back to 1487 when a ruler of Chiang Saen constructed a chedi at this site. Visitors can enjoy stunning views overlooking Chiang Saen and Laos after climbing up the hill or taking a scooter to the top.
Golden stupa shining under the glare of the sun. Very at peace. Need to remove shoes before entering stupa grounds. Right next to another temple. No crowd on a regular Monday.

Wat Phra That Chom Kitti is a historic Buddhist temple located atop Chom Kitti Hill in Chiang Saen, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. Established in the 10th century, the temple is renowned for its ancient chedi, which is believed to enshrine sacred relics of the Buddha. Visitors can reach the temple by ascending a series of steps leading up the hill. Upon arrival, they are greeted by the temple’s traditional Lanna-style architecture and serene atmosphere. The elevated location offers panoramic views of the Mekong River and the surrounding landscape, making it an ideal spot for reflection and meditation. Wat Phra That Chom Kitti holds significant cultural and religious importance in the region. It serves as a place of worship and a testament to the area’s rich historical heritage. Visitors are encouraged to dress modestly and respect local customs while exploring the temple grounds.

This from a local, I live within short walking distance, this famous Thai temple is regarded by us locals as a second nicest temple complex in the area, serene, garden-like, temple bells to ring at the top set on a hill, can walk up the 332 steps if u like, yep I counted them, but walking down can be troublesome when the moss gets wet, driving up and around the side, worth a visit, the temple is on Top of the hill, Not street level; there is another temple at street level

Wat Pa Sak Historical Site in Chiang Saen is a significant historical park featuring a well-preserved 12.5-meter-high stupa built in the classic Lanna style. The temple, named after the legend of King Saen Phu planting 300 teak trees, offers ancient ruins and seven monuments, including a revered chedi dating back to the mid-14th century. It's known for its peaceful ambiance and underground tunnels, making it an archaeologist's paradise.
Update for late 2024: there is now a 50 baht fee to enter. Rather surprising as it's only a small temple and the town has dozens scattered around throughout. Nice temple with some remnants of other building foundations scattered in a large field. There are artwork sculptures on open air display now until the end of April 2024. Free admission.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Wat Pa Sak – A Truly Inspiring Experience in Chiang Rai Visiting Wat Pa Sak was an absolutely unforgettable experience, and I can confidently say it deserves a full five-star rating. From the moment I arrived, I was completely captivated by the serene atmosphere and the sense of timeless history that surrounds this magnificent temple. Nestled in a lush, peaceful area of Chiang Saen, Wat Pa Sak is a perfect blend of natural beauty, spiritual energy, and architectural elegance. The temple itself is incredibly well-preserved, showcasing the classic Lanna architectural style with intricate details and stunning craftsmanship. The main chedi stands tall and proud, adorned with delicate stucco decorations that depict mythical creatures and historical stories. Every corner of the temple grounds offers something new to admire, from the smaller shrines to the beautifully carved guardians, each reflecting the rich cultural heritage of northern Thailand. Walking through the temple, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and calm, which made it an ideal place to reflect, meditate, or simply enjoy the quiet beauty around me. The natural surroundings of Wat Pa Sak enhance its charm even further. Towering teak trees provide gentle shade and add to the tranquil ambiance, making a stroll around the grounds feel like a journey back in time. The combination of greenery, historical architecture, and well-maintained grounds makes every step visually and emotionally rewarding. It is clear that great care is taken to preserve both the spiritual and physical aspects of the temple, and this attention to detail truly enhances the visitor experience. What I particularly loved about Wat Pa Sak is how it feels both grand and intimate at the same time. It is large enough to explore for hours, yet quiet and peaceful enough to feel like a private retreat from the busy world. The staff and caretakers are welcoming and respectful, adding to the overall positive experience. Whether you are interested in history, culture, photography, or simply looking for a serene spot to relax, Wat Pa Sak will not disappoint. In conclusion, Wat Pa Sak is a rare gem in Chiang Rai that combines historical significance, spiritual depth, and natural beauty. Every visit feels enriching, inspiring, and calming. I wholeheartedly give it a 5-star rating and highly recommend it to anyone visiting northern Thailand. This temple is a place where memories are made, hearts are lifted, and the spirit is rejuvenated.

These are ruins from more than 500 years ago. Let's appreciate it for what it is. A very serene place.

Really disappointing. This historical park is falling apart with the only attraction being the large structure in the middle. You may want to spend 15 minutes to see that but beyond that this spot is really not worth making the effort to see, unfortunately. The entry fee of 50 baht is OK given the state of the attraction.
CHARLES A — Google review
This old temple complex showcases the beauty of Lanna architecture with its intricate designs. It is more of a ruin than a temple. What truly sets this place apart are the majestic teak trees scattered throughout the grounds. Their grandeur not only provides shade but also fosters a tranquil and peaceful ambiance.

this from a local; this is one of the better "temples' in the area, often described as 'temples' when they are really temple ruins; this one is in a park-like atmosphere, very pretty, quiet, relaxing, ok parking; they used to charge admission , sometimes on and off these days; big grounds; the map is wrong , that frontage road goes all the way thru; worth a visit
Vern D — Google review
It was a temple that is very very old. I came here with a guide and they told us about the history of this temple. It is amazing how it’s still standing. I would say it’s only interesting if you knew you, Siri history behind it. There are no signs or information around the temple so you wouldn’t be able to access that information unless a tour guide told you it or you knew it before hand

Wat Phra That Pha Ngao, also known as Vihan Luang Pho Pha Ngao, is a historic Buddhist temple located in Chiang Saen District, Thailand. The serene atmosphere and ancient manuscript depository make it an attractive destination for exploration and spiritual reflection.
this from a local; imo, and many others, this is the nicest temple complex in the area; not a small place even tho it is tucked into a very small village; it is not obvious however there are 3 levels to this complex, it takes up the entire hill; the photos i have are only the first level as my leg is bad so i cant go to the upper 2; but i have been there many times way in the past; imo the 2nd level is the nicest, no people, serene, beautiful temple; the top level is a pagoda, different style; not too commercialized; sometimes Large bus groups; plan on spending a couple hours overall here; at the top there are some stunning views down on the mekong river and laos, etc; library in the top temple altho i never run into the monk to talk about it; can feed the fish in one of the ponds; there are a number of buildings that make up the complex; can walk up the levels, 1,2,3 or drive 'around the back'; if there is moss on the steps it can be Very slippery on the way down, careful; smart money is walk up and have someone drive you back down; the riser and the treads on the steps are quite irregular so not all that easy climbing all the steps

Nestled in Thailand's serene landscape, Wat Phra That Pha Ngao, a sacred embrace. Its origins trace back through time's veiled mist, A haven of spirituality, where history persists. Upon the cliffs, overlooking the Mekong's flow, Vihan Luang Pho Pha Ngao stands in tranquil glow. Bearing witness to centuries, a silent sage, Echoing tales of reverence in each sacred page. Founded with devotion, by hands now unseen, This temple venerates a legacy serene. A tapestry of faith, woven through the years, Whispers of pilgrims' prayers, calming ancient fears.

Attractive by the glass sky walk that you can see the view of Maekhong river and Republic of Lao on the opposite side of the river. However this place manage as too commercialize not so care the visitors. I found some old and weak people have to get off from the service car on the defined point. The have to claim the steep hill for a log distance to get in the sky walk with another charge from the temple. The place was not so clean and so many shops in the area.

Wat Phra That Pha Ngao is a very peaceful place with impressive architectural beauty. I walked around the temple, paid respect to the Buddha statues, and sat to enjoy the view of the Mekong River.
