(Translated by Google) Yumbula Kang, the first palace in Tibet, was built in 127 BC and has a history of 2150 years. It is more than 800 years earlier than the Potala Palace. It was the first Zampu (Tubo ruler) in Tibet’s legend. Later, the fifth Dalai Lama turned Yongbula Khang into a temple. During the Cultural Revolution, part of the temple in Yongbulakang was mobilized and demolished by local young politicians. In the process, some cultural relics were lost, leaving only ruins. After 1982, the building was restored and included in the protection list. The last time I came was at the end of 2019 before the epidemic. At that time, the only way to go up and down was by horseback or on foot. This time the road was repaired and battery cars were finally available. The scenery above is just as good, but the back mountain is closed due to road reconstruction. The last photo was taken when I climbed to the back mountain last time. Lulang Linhai Guanjingtai

Mentioned on
1 list
Nature & Parks
Forests
Lulang Linhai Guanjingtai is a tourist attraction with an observation deck that provides spectacular views of the snow-capped peaks and surrounding forest. The scenery is breathtaking, particularly in April when the fresh cold air enhances the experience. There are also gift shops on site for visitors to purchase souvenirs. However, toilet facilities may be considered outdated due to its remote location, but this is understandable given its surroundings.
Before visiting Lulang Forest one must visit Nyingchi (Linzhi) a small town in Bayi District of Tibet Autonomous Region. It's called Switzerland of Tibet! Keep at least min two days to enjoy the vast green scenary and snowcapped mountains at Lulang Linghai Guanjingtai!
Sanjay S — Google review
There is observation platform to see the Lulang forest. If you are very lucky, you can also see the beautiful Namjagbarwa mountain. Looks like I am not the lucky person :-(

(Translated by Google) I traveled to Tibet at the end of November last year, and visited Lulang Forest Lake on my first two days. I remember it was over 4,000 meters above sea level. It was off-season and snowy when I got there, so there weren't many people there. The stairs were also quite slippery, so I had to be very careful the entire time. I wasn't fully acclimated to the area, so even though I usually work out, climbing these stairs was quite strenuous. I had altitude sickness that day, but thankfully it was fine by the evening. The scenery was nice, but you really have to walk slowly.

Very beautiful Meili snow mountain under sunrising.
Tuan P — Google review
Meili Snow Mountain, also known as Kawakarpo or Meili Xueshan, is a majestic mountain range located in the northwest of Yunnan Province, China. Situated in the heart of the Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Meili Snow Mountain is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, diverse flora and fauna, and rich cultural heritage. Here are some fascinating facts about Meili Snow Mountain: - *Highest peak:* The main peak, Kawakarpo, rises to an impressive 6,740 meters (22,113 feet) above sea level. - *Snow-capped peaks:* The mountain range is home to 13 peaks above 6,000 meters, with six of them remaining unclimbed. - *Biodiversity hotspot:* Meili Snow Mountain is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including several endangered species like the snow leopard, red panda, and Yunnan snub-nosed monkey. - *Tibetan culture:* The mountain is considered sacred by the local Tibetan people, who believe it is the dwelling place of gods and goddesses. - *Trekking and adventure:* Meili Snow Mountain offers various trekking routes, including the popular Meili Snow Mountain Trek, which takes you through stunning landscapes and traditional Tibetan villages. Meili Snow Mountain is an awe-inspiring destination that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventure opportunities.

The 3 photos were taken not far from the small (mostly Tibetan) city of Deqen. A short taxi ride (about 15 minutes) out of Deqen (aka Deqin or Deqing), brings you to a location called Feilai Temple; here you can overlook the peaks of the Meili Snow Mountains (Meili Xue Shan). The Mingyong glacier is seen in the first image [photo also taken from 飞来寺 (Fei Lai Si = Feilai Temple)] ... on route G214, in northwestern Yunnan Province. Within this chain of mountains is visible the highest mountain in Yunnan ---> Kawa Garbo or Khawa Karpo, also transcribed as Kawadgarbo, Khawakarpo, Moirig Kawagarbo, / Kawa Karpo or Kha-Kar-Po), as it is known by local residents and pilgrims, or Kawagebo Peak (Chinese: 卡瓦格博) <---- this last 'info' from Wikipedia. Kawagarbo has never been successfully summited, and now it is not legal for anyone to attempt to climb this sacred peak. Kawagarbo is not very visible in my photos (too cloudy) but there are many pictures of this beautiful mountain found on the internet. "The facilities" and "service" mentioned above as "very good" apply only to the guest houses and hotels in and around the small settlement of Feilai Temple (actually a small little town). Once you go down into the valley below and hike in the Meili Snow Mountains and surrounding area -- facilities are mostly crude or non existent.

噶丹松赞林

Mentioned on
1 list
Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
The vast Buddhist monastery complex known as 噶丹松赞林 was constructed in traditional Tibetan design in the year 1679 CE. This impressive temple is a notable historical structure of Buddhism, showcasing the rich culture and traditions of Tibet. Situated in Shangri-la, it has endured over three centuries of upheaval and conflict between China and Tibet. This famous religious site holds great significance for followers of Tibetan Buddhism and welcomes visitors to experience its grandeur and spiritual essence.
A life altering experience. The Monastery was first built in the 16th century, and rebuilt after the cultural revolution. While you will see crowds, it will also be peaceful as you enter the various temples and focus on the art and God. The restoration has be true to original, vibrant colors and incredible art. You do have to climb a bit, but if you are otherwise healthy it should be OK. Take a guide with you, as ours made the stories in the temples and paintings come alive.
Mini R — Google review
Good place of visit and to better understand Tibetan Buddhism..... definitely worth the time and effort to get to the place.
DENNIS T — Google review
It was the very first Buddhist shrine I visited in my life in 2008. And what a majestic place it was! Since then I have entered into the spirit of Buddha's teaching. Songzanlin or The Ganden Sumtseling temple in Yunnan province (China) is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, located few kilometres away from the city of Shangri-La at elevation over 3000 metres. Built in the 17th century, the monastery is the largest one in the south-west of the country. It is sometimes referred to as "the little Potala palace".
Nataliia K — Google review
The scenery is insanely beautiful, almost unreal. My mind felt so calm in the mix of mist and pine-wood smoke drifting through the air. It was foggy and –5°C, but somehow my heart felt warm, I love it lots.
Agnes A — Google review
Beautiful Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan province. Looks magnificent from far.
YC K — Google review
A famous Tibetan temple in Shangri-La. Due to its geographical location with high altitude, its very difficult for me to climb the staircase. Required more energy than the normal time. Its advise to bring oxygen tank with you when you climb up to avoid altitude sickness. The view upstairs is superb. Take note that we are not allowed to take interior of the temple as this shows disrespectful to them/ their god.
Sin T — Google review
May be worth a visit if you're in the area, but no comparison to the Potola Palace in terms of size. Just 30 minutes would be plentiful, unless you're really into praying and rites. Also be mindful if you're prone to altitude sickness as the temple is at 3300m and there is a hike up the stairs.
Eric C — Google review
Songzanlin Monastery offers breathtaking views, and the ascent is manageable for most. It's advisable to bring an oxygen tank to enhance comfort due to the altitude. Be cautious of locals asking for money to drive you to the top, as the walk to the monastery is not as time-consuming as they may claim.

Dukezong Ancient City, Shangri-La Administration Committee

Historic Sites
Dukezong Ancient City, located in the Shangri-La Administration Committee, is a small Tibetan town that has flourished for over 1,300 years. Despite a devastating fire in 2014, the district remains open to tourists after extensive reconstruction efforts. The city exudes old-world charm with its rich Tibetan culture and traditions. Visitors can savor local delicacies like yak milk and also enjoy Italian espresso made from original Yunnan coffee beans at cozy cafes.
The highlight of Dukezong Ancient City has to be the golden turbine that you can attempt to spin along with others. But mind you it is located right at the top of the hill so it can be quite an arduous climb before you reach there. However, the top offers stunning views of Shangri-La in all directions and you get to witness the marvels of its temples as well. Following that, take a stroll around the city and try some of its local delicacies such as yak jerky or yak milk coffee.
Ben L — Google review
Didn't really get to explore this ancient town. Here mainly to visit the Dafo Temple and largest prayer wheel. However, like the buildings and shops while walking along the streets.
YC K — Google review
Lovely city, much like many other China "old towns", it has a "traditional" look in its "Old Town" area but clearly mostly reconstructed to retain an olden day charm. There are a lot of pros to this, namely mod cons such as clean sanitation! The old town is slightly over commercialised with bands blaring on the upstair overlooking the square and streets below, souvenir shops aplenty and load and loads of food outlets, not to mention the gaudy flashy lights... However, the scatterings of minorities going about their daily routine in their traditional clothes, the Guishan Temple, with its giant metal prayer wheel and its steady streams of worshippers (mostly locals) more than makes up for it! There is also the Songzanlin Monestery nearby. This is super jammed packed, we opted to visit a minor temple in the same grounds to avoid the crowds. Much better! Shangrila is a nice stopover place to aclimatise as we made our journey to Yading National Park which is over 4,000 meters above sea level.
Timothy L — Google review
This ancient city in Shangri la 香格里拉 is packed with old world charm of Tibetan culture and traditions. We enjoyed every minute of our stay there. People are friendly and welcoming. We tried every possible delicacies and especially yak milk and yes, there are cafes serving Italian espresso with original Yunnan coffee beans. The mornings and evenings during winter are really cold at sub-zero on the mercury, the high altitude is something to take special note. There are two main gates into the city - North and East. We stayed at this lovely modern guesthouse - Shangri-La Yunbian View Homestay - 香格里拉云边观景民宿(独克宗古城店), their hospitality was first class. They are located about ten minutes by foot from the North Gate.
Basil C — Google review
A worthwhile place of visit and indulge in local delicacies and capture vivid moments.
DENNIS T — Google review
Beautiful Ancient Building with massive walls at one of the few entrances to Shangrila Ancient Town. Love the unique structure with "old" architectural design that is in line with the olden houses of ancient town. It blends comfortably into the charm of the olden era. In front of the Dukezong Ancient building is the huge parking lot. As such, it's quite convenient to visit this place.

Shudu Lake, located within Pudacuo National Park, is a stunning high-altitude lake surrounded by mountains and a primeval forest. The clear blue waters of the lake create a serene and picturesque setting. In winter, the landscape transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, with the lake often freezing over to form an impressive icy expanse. Visitors can explore the area by taking a leisurely stroll or catching a boat to experience the breathtaking natural beauty.
Part of Pudacuo National Park. Catch the park shuttle to get to Shudu Lake 属都海. We were given the choice of catching a boat or take a leisure stroll across the lake. Beautiful and breathtaking and nature at its best. During winter, the cold dry wind bites. And the altitude of 3,600 meters altitude may be a challenge for those prone to high altitude sickness - so be prepared with oxygen canister. Today, we are blessed with sunshine and clear sky. Visiting during winter is an incredible experience.
Basil C — Google review
It's quite pretty. Very Calming to walk along the board walk. Nature is showcased very well here. The photo framed opportunities are quite distracting with gimmicky decorations and silly costumes. The rental prices and quality of photos aren't fully justifiable either. I'd avoid buying hot beverages in the stalls. The drinks were quite stale, likely because they have low sales volume. We had some naughty folks from HK feeding the squirrels on trees. There are more wildlife in the other lake if you're interested.

Potatso National Park, situated on a high plateau, is China's first national park to meet International Union for Conservation of Nature standards. Spanning 1,300 square kilometers, it boasts a well-preserved primitive landscape with lakes, wetlands, forests, meadows, and diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can explore the lush green forest and admire the stunning scenery of Shudu Lake by walking along the plank road.
The park indeed lives up to its reputation and is clearly one of the best in China. Unfortunately there were intermittent showers when we were there, which made our exploration a bit more challenging....we had to take a few stops along the way. Nevertheless, it was a good outing.

Visited in November. Apart from yellow trees, no other Autumnal colours. Already very cold especially in the shade and frost could be seen on the ground. Pleasant overall but nothing much to be seen. Thought that the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Blue Moon Valley nearer Lijiang looked more like a national park with the majestic snow covered mountain peaks. Only visit if you have time and enjoy nature walks.
Siew T — Google review
Don’t come here! Ticket price is CNY 138 which includes ferries within the park. But I don’t think that worth it. The scenery was normal for me. There is 2 lakes to visit Shudu lake and Bita sea. Nothing special though There’re extra charged scenery. Boating on Shudu lake. Hiking on primal forest and leaping in forest. I don’t think this is a national park but a business square in a mountain.
Geetze Z — Google review
Was there end August 2025 as part of the tour package that we signed up for. Park is huge ! We arrived on a rainy day. We took the bus ride and the boat ride (at I believe Shudu Lake). It was a looong walk in the drizzles and dont know what to expect. Anyway, we were glad to be back at the restaurant / retails for a warm bubble tea after a 70mins walk in the drizzles. Was told to keep pumping Oxygen, so, we did just that. Probably, had we come on a sunny day, it would be better experience.
Siu B — Google review
November might not be the best time to visit this park, with partial park closure (only accessible to 2 lake locations) and dry pasture. Didi from Shangrila old town RT around 200 yuan, entrance ticket is 138 yuan, and additional 65 for the boat ride for each lake which is like 5 mins ride, you can see the next pier…pretty mandatory unless you want to walk 4 km for each stop. Maybe it’s just not for me, if you like walking trail then should be ok. I’d opt out and do Balagezong, Meili, Abujico, etc.
Carol E — Google review
The landscape is beautiful but it was super crowded and we couldn’t really enjoy the experience. Many people only interested in taking pictures and using disposable oxygen bottles are making this really not sustainable
Stefania G — Google review
Recommend buying the cheaper ticket which excludes the fantasy character storyline that is indoor at the end of the whole tour of the park. Which easily people might not have time for it anyway unless you have the whole day. From the first bus ride (first lake tour), you can choose to get off the bus at the first stop and trek. Or you could continue the ride which ends at second stop and have 3 options. 1) Walk + payable ferry ride, 2) Buggy ~180per pax farm tour, 3) 90rmb per pax bicycle ride(~30mins) + 1 free ferry ride at the end of the bike track @pier4. I chose the bike ride and recommend it. It is beginner friendly track mostly. Make sure to take the bike crew’s contact before setting off. Upon reaching ferry point4, call them for the ferry ride to the end ferry point where you will walk 400m to the end of the tour around the lake. Where you can purchase food and drinks and take the shuttle bus to the park entrance or continue the ride to the next lake. I would recommend calling the bike crew and constant pressuring them for the ferry as they seem to want to accumulate more bikers(very few chose this route) before summoning the ferry over to pier4. This ferry from pier4 is upon demand only and is the only way bikers have to get back. It’s funny how we just left the bikes at the pier and there were no instructions because it’s quite obvious we shouldn’t bring the bikes up the ferry. I waited for 30mins and had seen people complained worse.
Jiwei S — Google review
Very beautiful national park with great scenery but most of the park is not accessible to the public. There are only 3 tourist spots here and you’ll have to pay additional for a bus ticket to access the bus which brings you to each spot (in the designated order stated by the park). Would recommend dedicating 4-5 hours to visiting if you are keen to walk all the three trails in the tourist spots (2-3km each). Toilets are available at the start and end of every trail as well. The trails are mostly reasonably well maintained boardwalks or paths without too much steps.

Travelers can also explore the nearby villages and enjoy a stay at the Naxi Family hostel, known for its warm hospitality and delicious garden-fresh food.
It’s a beautiful stop from Tiger Leaping Gorge to Shangri La not to be missed. The hike up to the viewing platform is easy and hence you don’t need the horse riding service. You can see the terraces with snowcap mountain at the backdrop. This place is a bit similar to Pamukkale in Turkey.

You can either come here from Shangrila or Lijiang. Entry fee is CNY30 at the point of writing. From the parking area you need to hike up & come back down from the other end. Drone shots will be able to capture the full scenery, otherwise pay the local guys to help you get the footage.

I’ll tell you this is a must visit place. Worth to visit! Ticket price is ¥30/person. But don’t ride the horse! Don’t ride the horse! They will charge you ¥60 at the beginning but as you walked in they will charge u only ¥20. But never mind it will not take too long to climb up the hill. Don’t forget There are 3 springs inside (most visitors only took pictures at exterior) The staff(native residents) introduced me the origin of the Springs and their culture. The spring is much beautiful than the pic I upload here guys

It is worth going. Large bus tour will not take you there only small private car tours will. It is beautiful. Bring your drone if you have one.

(Translated by Google) I have been traveling around the world for nearly 30 years, and this section of the Eastern Ring Road, wow, is probably the loneliest, most winding, and most beautiful section of mountain road I have ever driven in my life. I just drove slowly and carefully, not because of the road conditions. The road conditions were very good. Thanks to the weather, the mountains and forests along the way were beautiful and sparsely populated, which was almost unprecedented. But there was an unexplained burden in my heart, and I vaguely felt that this beautiful land of Shangri-La was really not allowed. Don't bother with any modern civilization. Tiger Leaping Gorge

Mentioned on

Tiger Leaping Gorge is a natural wonder located in Yunnan's Yulong County, China. It is considered one of the deepest gorges globally and offers breathtaking views of the Yangtze River as it flows through a narrow passage between the Haba Snow Mountain and the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The gorge is part of the Three Parallel Rivers National Park, which also includes Meili and Haba Snow Mountains.
This is a hiking place but even if you do not wish to hike , you can still take a public bus from “Lijiang passenger transport terminal” to the entrance to take amazing photos of the Tiger statue & the gushing river! Further, you can arrange for private car transport to go to Tea Horse guesthouse and see the million dollar view of Jade Dragon snow mountain right in front of you ! If you choose to hike , the full hike would require you to first go to 纳西雅阁 Naxi guesthouse , the starting point , to hike the challenging upslope “28 bends” and reach Tea Horse guesthouse / Halfway guesthouse to stay the night, before continuing on to either 1) Tina’s guesthouse to buy tickets to take the public bus to go back Lijiang / Shangri-La or 2) Teacher Zhang’s guesthouse to arrange for private car pick up to go back Lijiang / Shangri-La For half day hike, you would have to arrange private car transport to either Tea Horse / Halfway guesthouse and then hike the rest of the way to either Tina’s or Teacher Zhang guesthouse. Do note some parts of the hike after the waterfall are difficult and you need to be careful. Note: When I visited , many of the scenic spots in the middle of the gorge such as the Gorge rock etc. were closed due to reports of accidents, hopefully they will open again soon… Overall, the scenery is as authentic as you can get and the view of the gushing river and mountain is truly spectacular !

This spot is a must-see! The views of the mountains and (aggressive) river stream are really incredible. The one caveat is that climbing up the stairs after you're done sightseeing can be brutal if you're not used to physical activity. They have a lot of benches along the climb back up for resting or you can buy an escalator package to save the energy
Kelly W — Google review
Magnificent scenic tour. Different part of the year has different views and experience. For those who are unable to do stairs, you have to pay for the escalator service. its worth it because its a long way down and up. Wind is really strong so warm clothes are definitely required.
Lim F — Google review
This is a Large natural gorge, one of the deepest in the world! Reconmended to pay escalator fees of RMB70 both way. But, u still need to climb 200 staircase down/up! Not wheelchair friendly. If you don't have energy to climb staircase, not Reconmended. The toilet also not in good condition. It is tourist spot, hope local authorities can take some action.

Wonderful place with good location for take a photo. Nice weather. I been here in early of Oct. temperature around 20-25. Crowed with tourist.

This is the spot where most tourists will visit at Tiger Leaping Gorge. There’s a big parking area for tourists bus here. We visited this place in Nov which is not the peak season (normally in July & Aug when the water level is the highest). Still is a nice place to visit. We paid RMB70 each to take the escalator to and fro to the bottom in order to save time. It’s still pretty crowded even though it’s not in peak season.
Jon N — Google review
Absolutely beautiful is all one can say when they witness the beauty of the Tiger Leaping Gorge. The story behind the name is very interesting as well and sparks curiosity about whether it’s a true fact or not. Visitors can opt to either walk up and down the gorge or purchase tickets to use the escalators. At the end of the trail there’s a nice tourist spot set aside for refreshments and the purchase of souvenirs.

The First Bend of Yangtze River is a picturesque landscape where the well-known Jinsha river, the upper reach of Yangtze river, takes a sharp turn amid surrounding mountains and fields. This natural wonder is located in an area where no commonly accepted interpretation exists for this phenomenon. Visitors can enjoy stunning views from a hill and take photos while experiencing the beauty of the scenery from different viewpoints.
“Here the well-known Jinsha river (upper reach of Yangtze river) turns sharply in direction from southeast to northeast forming a natural wonder – the First Bend of Yangtze River. There is so far no generally accepted interpretation for this phenomenon.”

I checked this place on Google, and it looked very nice. After arriving in China, my local tour guide brought me here, but it was not the same as in the photos. Some areas seemed poorly maintained, and there was nothing much to see. I feel like I was misled by the travel agency. Erhai Lake in Dali, Yunnan, is a stunning and expansive body of water, covering 250 square kilometers. Known for its serene beauty and fresh air, it's a perfect spot for a peaceful retreat. The lake is surrounded by picturesque landscapes, including the majestic Cangshan Mountains. Renting a twin-bicycle is a popular way to explore the scenic lakeside paths and charming villages. Don't miss trying Mixue milk tea while enjoying the ride! The combination of natural beauty and local culture makes Erhai Lake a must-visit destination for travelers seeking tranquility and adventure

The lakeshore can be explored by hiking. Highlights include Erhai Park and the Butterfly Springs on the Western bank. Islands on the lake – including Guanyin Ge, Jinsuo Island (金梭岛; 'Golden Shuttle Island'), Nanzhao Folklore Island (南诏风情岛) and Xiaoputuo Island (小普陀) – are also available for visits. The lake is an important food source for the local people (Bais), who are famous for their fishing method: their trained cormorants catch fish and return them to fishmongers. The birds are prevented from swallowing their fish by rings fixed around their neck.

Three Pagodas

Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the serene landscape of Dali, Yunnan, the Three Pagodas stand as a testament to ancient architecture and Buddhist heritage. This remarkable trio of pagodas is set against a tranquil reflecting pond, creating an enchanting atmosphere that captivates visitors. As you stroll through the historic streets of old Dali, you'll be greeted by the gentle sounds of nature rather than modern distractions, thanks to local preservation efforts that have kept this area free from new constructions and vehicles.
This templex complex is a testament to Chinese architecture and their dedication to Buddhism. The temple at the top of the hill was really something special, the level of detail and craftsmenship was like nothing I have ever seen. I felt emotional being in that final temple after the adventure getting up there.
Shelby A — Google review
Do visit the upper temple area first before going towards the areas of the three pagodas. You can't enter them but they are really visually quite aesthetically pleasing. Budget about 2-3 hours.
Chin H — Google review
Site very unique in Dali, the 3 Pagodas are really a testimony of the Buddhist past of the City. They are the only ancient monuments of the site, dating back to the 9th century and surviving the earthquakes of the region. The other buildings/temples have been rebuilt/ realized by the government.
Oliver K — Google review
The Three Pagoda is located at north west of Dali Ancient Town. After visiting ancient town, can take 3 wheels scooter from ancient town to Three Pagoda, fare is about RMB15 and journey is less than 20mins. The Three Pagoda compound is very big and spacious. Walking up from main entrance to last building in a row will took about 2 to 3 hrs. Recommend to visit Three Pagoda whenever comes to Dali.
James O — Google review
Beneath the wide Yunnan sky, where mountains watch and waters breathe, the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple rise with timeless grace. Stand before them, and you don’t just see ancient towers—you feel a quiet pulse beneath your feet, the whisper of old kings and monks folded into the wind. The air is still, yet heavy with presence. Here, feng shui is not theory but lived reality. Cangshan Mountain cradles your back; Erhai Lake opens before you like a mirror of the soul. It is no accident the Dali kings built here—this is a place chosen by earth and spirit alike. If you close your eyes and play soft Buddhist music, the kind that floats gently through Beijing temples, the centuries seem to fall away. You’re no longer a tourist. For a moment, you are royalty, seeker, and pilgrim all at once. The central pagoda—graceful, golden, eternal—has stood for over a thousand years, through earthquake, war, and change. Around it, newer towers bow slightly, and the restored temple complex behind them offers quiet cloisters and incense-filled halls. Everything speaks in silence: the still lotus ponds, the wind in the pine, the prayer wheels turned by unseen hands. And then, a kind gesture: foreign visitors are welcomed freely—no fee, only a passport. It's a small door into a great world, one that honors respect more than revenue. Come not just to see, but to listen. Come not just to photograph, but to feel. The Three Pagodas are not just stone—they are memory made visible.
X P — Google review
Wry peaceful place to see all 3 Pagodas (40m and 70m). Very nice garden area. Large Pagoda from Tang Dinasty 9th century and the small pagodas from early 14th century.

The entrance fee of 75 RMB is a bit steep to see the 3 pagodas. There are also a number of Chinese temples to visit. It can be quite sunny so remember to wear a hat and covered clothing.

A stunning succession of multiple gorgeous temples that only starts with the three pagodas, just keep on going up the hill. Can easily spend a whole day exploring. There’s a Buddhist vegan (蔡) restaurant on the premises to keep you fed whilst doing that. Free entrance for foreigners.

There is no foreigners at Foreigners Street. In fact, all the action now concentrated at Red Dragon Well and the adjacent Dragon Well Stream Lane Walking Street and over there is much picturesque. The city was beautiful but really crowded at night. The 同质化/homogenisation of shops targeted at tourists was really serious and this place felt increasingly commercialized. You feel such a sense of deja Vu every 100 meters, and of course the loudspeakers blaring do not help.

The Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley Tropical Rain Forest Scenic Area, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Botanical Garden, offers a diverse range of tropical animals and plants. The area includes attractions like Wangtianshu, Flower Garden, Primitive Forest Park, and Manting Park. While some may argue that elephant performances are not humane, it's important to note that these protected areas primarily aim to safeguard elephants.
A truly incredible journey to the Xishuangbanna Wild Elephant Valley. Only 300 or so remain in South China . Riding atop the rain forest canopy was a remarkable experience.
Michael D — Google review
(Reviewing based on 2 years ago) I don't know if it's because I read the book "Black Beauty" a few weeks earlier, but the elephant ride place as shown in the cover photo of this Google page looked like they were being put through slave labour and some seemed severely malnourished, compared to the elephants that were roaming freely nearby.
Soroush T — Google review
If you have any soul or compassion for animals, do not go here. This place has two elements: 1. It provides a genuine protected area for true wild elephants to roam. 2. It is a tourist attraction which exploits suffering rehabilitated elephants. I saw zero wild elephants on the walk through the reserve, and it's no surprise. Elephants are naturally shy and avoidant of humans, and tour guides have screaming tinny speakers to speak to their groups. It is overcrowded, and if I was an elephant I would have no interest in the noisy gawping humans who have invaded their territory. There are plastic bottles over the forest floor, dropped by tourists from the elevated walkway, and not picked up. The worst bit is this claims to be a sanctuary but exploits these highly intelligent and emotional creatures. In the information on the way in, it tells of rescuing the creatures from various horrible situations. These are the elephants that remain in the direct "care" of the "sanctuary". These elephants are paraded, literally in front of very large crowds in noisy environments. At the feeding station, I saw a row of elephants and an opportunity to buy a fruit basket to feed them. As I observed, the elephant clearly had had enough, and attempted to walk away. The mahout shouted at the elephant and it was forced to return to it's place as an overfed tourist attraction. I saw elephants who were swaying, usually a clear sign of trauma in the elephants who - unbelievably - were being disciplined for their natural trauma response. Finally, the elephants are made to perform in a circus style with very loud loudspeakers blaring and a gawping crowd of hundreds. If you know about the concept of "crushing" elephants, then the only way these "rescued" elephants would be doing this behaviour is through crushing. They were made to spray water at tourists, and rear on their hind legs, and many other tricks, while the staff member spoke about elephants' "care". I felt very sad going, and witnessing these majestic animals reduced to the whims of human entertainment. I have lived in China for a while, and while it leads the world in many areas, China's animal welfare standards are poor in comparison to some neighbouring countries, and this place is no exception. If you have any empathy, do not give your money to this veneer of animal welfare.
Daryl T — Google review
We were there at 09:00 sharp, and there was already a lot of people in the park. Unfortunately we didn’t see any elephants during our visit, but it only means they have somewhere to retreat. At 10:30 the park was full of noisy and misbehaving tourists, and guides with loudspeakers. How sad it was to see all the plastic and garbage, lying along the footpath through the forest. Mass tourism and greed have destroyed this pristine spot.
Lars M — Google review
This is not a free space for the elephants. Only shows for people and tourists. They say they have the elephants free and with the less contact with humans but is not true. Don’t go there please, do not contribute to these dirty and inhuman business

A beautiful garden located in the hills outside of Chiang Rai. The creation of the wife of King Rama IX, you can spend hours in the stunning gardens as well as visiting the lovely royal lodge. Make sure you add this to your itinerary, you won’t regret it !

It was ok, pretty gardens, but to be honest definitely not one of our favourite gardens and it’s a really long way to get here. I wouldn’t go again or recommend unless you happen to be passing by.

We've been there many times but never miss the chance when in Chiangrai. There is a bit of walking up and down. Free wheelchairs are available. This time, you could also rent a golf cart for 500 baht for 30 minutes or 1,000 for an hour.
Tom S — Google review
Very beautiful gardens, give yourself about 45 minutes to an hours to enjoy.
Richard D — Google review
We came to the park in the low season and were practically alone there. The pond and a number of flower beds were under reconstruction. The park was open until 5pm, but you could walk there later. There are discounts on tickets for residents and seniors.

Beautiful gardens and very popular place to take photos with the flowers. It seems the gardeners are constantly on the move replacing flower beds past their best with new flowers to keep the gardens looking colourful. There are several viewing platforms and places to sit within the grounds as well as several small greenhouses. I highly recommend the coffee shop for an espresso before you enter the gardens, totally delicious and made from coffee beans grown and roasted in the Thai mountains.

Mae Fah Luang Garden is located in Doi Tung area (also including nearby Doi Tung Royal Villa, Hall of Inspiration). It has fountain, beautiful flowers decorated with different concept for your visit, looking or posing pictures. And the key highlight here is The sculpture "Continuity", ends of the Garden to exit gate. Must visit when you arrive Chiang Rai. 2/2019

This garden is well worth the drive up from Chiang Rai. Such a beautiful and well maintained garden. Entry is 90b for adults and 45b for seniors. Wander along the many pathways, check out the flowers and view of surrounding mountains, or just relax on one of the many shady benches. And don't forget to check out the orchid exhibit, for sure the largest assortment of lady slippers I've ever seen in one place. The garden is huge, so even if there's a crowd you can still find a little spot of your own. When I was there, the treetop section was closed, so keep that in mind before making the drive, if your heart was set on that. Clean toilets at the entry and inside, and a small coffee stand and ice cream stand inside. Just down the road (short walk) are some food sellers and a handicraft section.

Doi Tung Royal Villa

Doi Tung Royal Villa, located in the Mae Fah Luang district, was the former royal summer residence of Her Royal Majesty Princess Mother. The villa is built in an eclectic Lanna-Swiss chalet style and features a night sky ceiling studded with stars in the main hall. Visitors can explore the botanical park, gardens, rock formations, and museum on the premises for a nominal fee.
Doi Tung Palace, I went during the New Year period at the beginning of the year, it was a good time to go to the palace because there will be a garden arrangement, local exchange for Thai and foreign tourists, both food and trade, each year's theme is different, but what I like the most is the inside of the palace, inside is like a semi-museum to be able to visit the area that I like the most is the balcony area that overlooks the garden below and is very beautiful. I like to visit every year. I give it a reputation in my heart. It is the most ideal thing for me.
Panthita K — Google review
Doi Tung Palace is a summer residence of King Mother, located in northern Thailand's highlands, near the border with Myanmar. King built this residence for his mother as she lived a portion of her life in Switzerland, delighted with mountain houses there. Northern Thailand, with its highlands and mild temperatures seemed the most suitable place for it. Upon King's orders it was built in a fusion of a Swiss chalet and Lanna style houses. For anyone who's visited any European chateau (palace) it's nothing to write home about, but considering it's in Far East it's worth visiting if on the way. Audio guide is included in the ticket and gives some interesting insights. Best part are the gardens beneath, nicely manicured and cared for

If you want to visit a royal garden, better in Chiang Mai. But in a good weather day after non stop raining, it was great to visit this little cosy garden. Enjoy
Marzia F — Google review
The garden was beautiful, full of many different varieties of flowers! Th entrance costed us 90THB/person to visit only the garden. You can also rent golf cart if you prefer that. The best time to visit is during winter season Dec-Jan. When I visited this place on Jan 11th, the weather was perfect! There are some coffee stalls inside the garden. You can enjoy your coffee while admiring the scenery. I will go back next winter!

Stunning, highly recommend if you visit Chiang Rai. A photographers dream👌 It shows open till 6pm, however we arrived 5:15pm only to find it closes at 5pm 😅

The house was the best spot of my Chiang Rai trip. The audio guide given was clear and the house was very well-maintained. You can learn about the life of the mother of King rama 9. The way she improve that area to what is called Doi Tung nowadays. However, you don't have to buy the whole package ticket that cost 220 THB for 3 places tickets coz 1 place, the garden - i don't remembered the name but it's a long one, is very old and there's nothing in there.
U-Maraj S — Google review
It's a very nice place to visit it self, a little uncomfortable, need to plan accordingly, the shops around have unrealistic prices and there is only one toilet at the main entrance
Maria G — Google review
This royal "palace", home of the late Princess Mother and one of her daughters, is one of the most amazing buildings in the country. Since Her Royal Highness spent most of her life in Switzerland, this royal villa has been built for her in the mountains of Northern Thailand in a style of a Swiss log chalet, though with traditional Thai Lanna (Northern style) decoration. So spectacular! And it's also so amazing, how industrious and moderate at the same time was the life of that wonderful lady.

The Golden Triangle, located at the meeting point of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos where the Mekong River divides into two streams, offers a unique opportunity to witness three countries at once. This area was historically notorious for opium production but has now become an educational park. Visitors can take guided boat tours to travel between the countries within minutes and learn about the region's intriguing history.
The Golden Triangle was a beautiful experience! Lots of shops to explore, Opium museum, and a relaxing boat ride with amazing views, including glimpses of the casinos and mountains in Laos and scenery in Myanmar. Definitely worth a visit!

We came here as wanted to see the 3 rivers meet. To be honest it wasn't really worth the visit. Not much to do here at all . They had several stalls with the locals crocheting bags and hats which I do wish I did buy from here as they were lovely and cheaper than any where else even though they are cheap enough in general but you would pay double in the south. Lovely hand made candles aswell.

We drove up here from Chiang Rai which took just over an hour on the scooter. We knew it wasn’t going to be breathtaking so the expectations were not high, we did however thoroughly enjoy our trip here (including the journey!) Nice long highways to get there, very easy to follow on the map. Cool to see the three different countries all in one place. There are many stalls to buy souvenirs and snacks. There are also a few different spots to take photos from. It’s not an incredible view as you can see from the photos but it’s definitely cool to see and say you’ve been there! A nice road trip too :)
Leo G — Google review
I was underwhelmed. Signs all need redoing and are hard to read. Vendors in stalls mostly rude or disinterested in our custom. Place is pretty run down. Roadworks on the journey add extra travel time and result in many places to stop along the way being closed. Check it out if you’re close to tick off the list but o wouldn’t bother making the trip from Chiang Mai especially for it.
Julz P — Google review
Visiting the Golden Triangle was like stepping into a living history book layered with beauty, mystery, and a hint of danger. The Museum of Opium offers a deep and sobering look into how this region once fueled a global trade — both devastating and defining for generations. Just across the river lies a stark contrast: a modern island glittering with a large casino and luxury facades, reportedly tied to Chinese criminal networks and dark operations like human trafficking and online “romance” schemes. It’s surreal to stand at the crossroads of Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar — where ancient traditions, political tensions, and modern vice all collide. The views are stunning, the history is heavy, and the atmosphere carries an undeniable energy that feels both beautiful and unsettling. A must-see for those curious about the realities beneath Southeast Asia’s serene surface. Would you like me to make a shorter version optimized for Google Maps (around 3 sentences, more traveler-focused but still intriguing)?

28/October/2025 Visited this place on a midday. View of the 3 countries was insightful. It's amazing & I'm so glad to make it here. Beautiful & serence.

This is the most touristic place along the Mekong River. Hundreds of buses and visitors from all over the world. Probably historically interesting, but I wouldn't go there for another time. A lot of other places with a great view at the river. If you are there and like tea, prices for local products are good. The following questions do not make sense. There is no fee or tickets for this place. Perhaps they mean the opium museum. But I was not there.
Oscar D — Google review
It was interesting to see where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos come together, but beyond the geographical interest it wasn’t spectacular. The detail and history about “No man’s land” in the middle of the 3 countries was very interesting, though. Well explained by a tour guide.

Located near the Golden Triangle, the House of Opium Museum offers a fascinating collection that delves into the history of opium trade in the region. The museum showcases antique knives, scales, and pipes, providing insight into the opium cultivation that was once a major source of income for local communities in Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. As part of efforts to combat this trade, governments have worked to create alternative sources of income such as farming and tourism.
Interesting place. A blend of dark side of golden triangle and history of opium. Entry fee 50bth per person and they will let you choose a post card as a ticket. Must visit if you are in this area. Parking and toilet available.

It is a private and small museum. Very interesting place, one of proper choice when you visit golden triangle. Ticket is only 50B, it is shaped as a related picture of golden triangle area. Good place to know about opium also.

The House of Opium Museum in Chiang Rai is a fascinating and eye-opening stop for anyone interested in the history of the Golden Triangle. The museum traces the region’s opium trade from its historical roots to modern-day efforts to curb cultivation, using photographs, artifacts, and informative displays. The exhibits are thoughtfully arranged, giving context without being overwhelming. It’s a compact but highly educational visit, best taken with some time to read the displays and reflect on the complex history of the area.
Noel M — Google review
Edit: I used the word didn’t instead of did and that made it seem like I didn’t enjoy the experience. When in fact it was the complete opposite. I enjoyed how simple and to the point it was. There are two museums that are all about opium, but this one is the one that’s closest to the Golden triangle, however, it is a bit smaller. I did enjoy this one because it was more childlike, it was direct into the point versus the other museum that’s much bigger and dives deep. Things in this museum feel more hands-on and interactive and in your face that’s why I say it seems more childlike. Also, cool, fun fact the ticket they give you is actually a postcard and you get to choose which one you like and at the end you get to stamp it with a bunch of different things, including the date. When I went entrance was ฿50
Rasha M — Google review
I didn’t expect to be so fascinated, but this museum completely blew me away! It’s easily one of my favorite places I’ve visited in Thailand. Unlike many other sites that don’t offer much background information, the Hall of Opium is filled with rich details about the entire history of opium — from its origins and trade routes to how different tribes used it for income or personal use. They even included different legends on opium. There are even unexpected and interesting sections, like information about the giant catfish in the nearby river! The exhibits are beautifully presented, and the craftsmanship of the opium pipes is stunning — they’re like pieces of art. I was on a tour but ended up staying much longer because there was just so much to take in. If you’re anywhere near the Golden Triangle, make this a top priority — it’s absolutely one of the top three things to do in the area.
Savannah — Google review
Very detailed exhibits and immersive without technology! The description are in English and narratives well depicted in photos and artifacts. A good 30 mins to 1 hour experience, depends when you have to leave the area on the journey back.
Niki L — Google review
This region used to be the land of opiums grown by hill-tribe communites before diverted to other agricultural activities. This museum tells the story of opiums in the northern part of Thailand with a massive influence from Myanmar and China linking to conflicts with neighboring countries including the Opium War.
Missberry M — Google review
Stepping into the House of Opium Museum in Chiang Saen was like uncovering a forgotten chapter of Southeast Asia’s past. It’s a small museum, but packed with a fascinating collection of artifacts that trace the opium trade’s deep-rooted history in the Golden Triangle region. The visit begins through a dim tunnel leading into a poppy field replica, setting a surprisingly immersive tone. Inside, you’ll find an eclectic range of historical items—opium pipes, weights, tribal tools, photographs, and more—each telling a piece of the complex story of cultivation, trade, addiction, and colonial entanglement. I was particularly struck by how personal and intimate the experience felt. The English signage made it accessible, and the exhibits—though compact—were thoughtfully curated. Despite its small size, we easily spent nearly an hour there. The museum staff were friendly and helpful, and we even received a complimentary postcard with our entry ticket, which was a sweet gesture. It’s not flashy, but it’s sincere—and a real eye-opener into a part of the region’s past that’s often overlooked. If you’re in the Golden Triangle or Chiang Saen, don’t miss this gem. It’s well worth the stop.

Mekong Smile Cruise Office offers an enchanting way to explore the stunning Mekong River in Laos through its slow boat tours connecting various towns. This experience is a favorite among travelers seeking both transportation and adventure, allowing them to soak in the breathtaking landscapes along the river. Passengers can expect exceptional service from friendly staff, including knowledgeable guides who share insights into local culture and history.
Stunningly beautiful two-day Cruise, the highlight of our holiday by a country mile! However the pickup/border is confusing and disorganised - will explain. Heads up: Get a description of what to do when entering Lao border. After many emails, it was explaining to us and confirmed by Smile Cruise that we would be met on the other side of the border with no problems. The border crossing is slow and tedious when you get there it's also very confusing about how to participate in Visa applications. We were not met for at least half hour / hour on arrival until someone from the cruise found us but only by luck. Pheww- That's a relief I think we muttered!! With no directions whatsoever and not many people who speak English except other tourists in the same situation, it can make it quite a stressfully anxious entrance, so needs to be addressed with signs and guidance! Winge over - now for the cruise itself! We were transferred to the long boat with 6 other people. You are greeted by your tour guide guide and other members of staff and away you go on your two day cruise from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang via Pakbeng. To expect nice scenery is a massive understatement, the Mekong and it's surrounding verdant hilltops is absolutely spectacular 🤩 that combined with a cool breeze whilst the boat cruises down the river at around 10 knots. The boat is comfy where you can sit on some makeshift seats remove from I believe a car or minibus, they also have a couple of area's where you can lay down and just relax to your hearts content. With the money you pay for the cruise, you can expect: Water, brilliant eastern food (including vegetarian), complimentary coffee + tea, local fruit and snacks along the way. For a fee you can purchase bottles of beer / soft drinks and they have a toilet so it all goes together nicely! The cruise contains some drop-off points where you get a chance to stretch your legs. There's a variety of different places you go to and won't go into to much depth, however be mindful that you don't get drawn in by the poverty-stricken local people after money, once you are kind enough to donate to one.. the rest will beg. Half way down you get dropped off at a place called Pakbeng which isn't up to much and will struggle to get luxurious accommodation, but is a cool backpackers hotspot and gives you a chance to eat and rest. (Hint: accommodation ISN'T provided on the Smile cruise package, need to organise separately). Overall very beautiful cruise and well worth the money, considering the cost of an internal flight will be around the same it's much more of a relaxing way to travel Lao. Plus: - Beautiful scenery - Amazing food - Time to relax and reflect - Cheap (relatively) - Adventurous - Free water and fruit Improvements: - Boarder crossing complicated - Poverty-stricken villages begging for money - Pakbeng one-horse town - Bed a great idea but invest in new mattress for extra comfort 😉 Thank you smile Cruise!

People were quite unfriendly. Locals near the pier were more helpful and friendly then the staff. Mekong Smile Cruise raised the price from 700 to 1000 baht the past year without adding any additional value (or 210000 Kip to Luang Prabang if you pay in local currency). Due to low season the boat is quite uncomfortable (not with tables like shown on the pictures) and only one boat a day is driving. The prices for food or drinks are overpriced, hence buy your snacks before your trip. Don't have too high expectations after you see the pictures.

The Mekong Smile 2 days cruise down the Mekong was absolutely worth the extra money. Seeing the public slow boats crammed full of people rushing straight past all the exceptional sights, sounds and smells made us know that we made the right decision. The booking teams was very flexible and helped us organise exactly what we wanted and the onboard team and service was nothing but smiles (and tasty food). I think a lot of the reviews here are for the public slow boat not offered by Mekong Smiles.

Very pleasant journey with Smile Mekong Cruise! Good service at their Huay Xai office to reserve with Mr. Ken. The trip was lovely! Our Lao guide named Touy was happy to share his knowledge and culture while being helpful, dedicated and friendly. The captain did a great job making the trip smooth. His wife, the cook made nice dishes with great care. Very positive experience! So grateful for the stops in the villages and cave, which felt authentic. Very special experience. Gorgeous landscape! I feel it was really worth taking this cruise package. Korp Jai! (Thank you in Lao) Note: Having read other comments, it seems like some writers might be confusing with the public slow boat...

The company was 30 minutes late to pick us up and we eventually had our hotel call them, upon which we discovered they had completely forgotten us. We boarded the tuk tuk and then he waited around for another 10 minutes before actually bringing us. When we arrived and got our tickets, to our dismay we were placed in the worst seats on the boat, in the back next to the bar and toilets. This is precisely the reason we bought the tickets the day before, so we could have a better seat near the front. When we asked the ticket office, we couldn't change our seats and they told us the company hadn't called in our reservation so effectively it was as if we had showed up at 10am to buy our ticket, meaning we got the worst seats on the boat. If I were you I wouldn't go with this irresponsible company and just arrive early to buy your ticket directly from the pier. Complete waste of money.

I travelled on the overnight sleeper bus from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, it was one of the worst travel experiences I've had. The service is billed as 'VIP' with drinks and snacks. We received the world's smallest bottle of water upon boarding and a bag to place our shoes. Nothing else. The beds were very small, anyone that would be considered above average height in Asia will struggle. Those travelling on their own be warned that you will be sharing a very narrow bed, with nothing to separate you, with possibly anyone. I'd say this is a bigger issue for women, but if you're lucky to be beside anyone broad you're going to be getting to know each other very well. The journey is very windy so while lying on the bed expect to toss and turn, with no barrier to keep you from falling out if you're on the top. All of the above would have been enough to make this a fairly miserable journey. Now we add in the driver. I don't even know where to begin with this. The driver decided to put on his music after the only rest room/food stop. This was at about 8-8.30pm. I thought maybe he just likes a bit of music for a half hour and we're only back on the bus so everyone's awake anyway. 'It'll probably stop soon'. It didn't stop. The entire bus was fortunate enough to be audience to a 7-8 hour non-stop Laotian musical performance. Not one single person asked for this. Actually, a number of people after a couple of hours of this went up and asked the driver to lower the music/turn it off given we all purchased the same SLEEPER bus. The reply from him? "No. I like the music." He even obnoxiously turned it up. At one point it seemed to me the music was only coming from the back of the bus, I. E. Where those who had asked for it to be lowered/turned off were sitting. Why did he turn it off at the front? Well to watch Lao/Muay Thai on his phone of course! How do I know this? I was in the first sleeper bed on the right so I could see and hear it all. It's rough to give the company such a poor rating due to one individual but it was without a doubt the most horrendous bus experience I've ever had. If I could go back and do it over again, I would 100% not be doing the overnight bus. Instead of meaning I got to my destination somewhat rested, I spent the next day or so recovering, effectively wasted a day catching up on sleep.

If you are willing to take the slow boat to Luang Prabang, don't buy the ticket here. They will charge you 240000 kips. Try to buy it at the Pier, which is about 1 km away from town and it costs 210000.
