Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory

Mentioned on

Museum
Specialty Museums
The Gosho Aoyama Manga Factory is a tourist attraction that celebrates the life and career of Detective Conan author, Gosho Aoyama. The museum features various character statues from the manga series and is suitable for families with children. The parking space can accommodate a large crowd even during peak seasons like Golden Week 2021. Visitors can enjoy taking pictures with the statues without any fees. Located in the city of Gosho Aoyama, visitors can also see other Detective Conan characters around town.
If you were a fan or conan, you must visit this conan's road, conan's Station as well as the museum. Many decorations are found along the conan's road, the Yuraeki 由良駅 is decorated as conan's station. The museum displays the original comics, sculptures and games for visitors to enjoy.
NIGHT L — Google review
For Conan fans, this museum is a treasure trove—you’ll be thrilled! Even for non-fans like us, it’s far from boring. The museum features interactive displays explaining detective puzzles from the series and showcases plenty of Aoyama’s original hand-drawn artwork. Admission is 700 yen for adults, with a 100-yen discount for foreign passport holders. Though it spans two floors, the exhibition space is small, and you can finish in about 30 minutes. A slightly lower ticket price would make it even more appealing. Conan enthusiasts, this is a must-visit!
Will S — Google review
Super fair price, definitly of interest for every Detective Conan Fan. The statues are nice, you learn something about the mangaka and you can take a quiz on your phone. There is a minigame where you can ride on Conans skateboard (I wasn't very good a it though^^')
Danara S — Google review
A must go location for Conan fans. So many things to see and definitely worth the walk from Conan station. You will see how Aoyama sensei work station and a few of his draft works. Also, get to do a miniature version for some of the tricks that were used in the anime and manga. The limited goods there is amazing especially the caps.

I am not a fan of Detective Conan, but visited with an enthusiastic friend. I still think this is a GREAT museum! It's interactive and pretty interesting for anyone. I enjoyed the experience and learned something new. In the gift shop, we got purikura sticker picture to commemorate the visit. They also have exclusive items for sale. Many nice photos opportunities 📸

great staff and stunning little museum for any conan fan. we came all the way from france to hokuei and it took us hours to drive from osaka, but it was worth it! make sure to come early to the city, we arrived at 3pm and everything shuts town at 5:30 or before. we had to rush because there is a lot to be seen in the town, and the cafés are very immersive and great. the prices of everything are very reasonable, from museum ticket to souvenirs to coffees and snacks in the conan cafés.
Amira T — Google review
The must visit museum for Detective Conan FC. Have many things related to Aoyama Gosho sensei with Conan & Yaiba. Quiz solving, Manga distribution, Dr.Akasa tools, biography etc. Admission fee 700 JPY per adult with souvenirs.

Must visit place for Conan fans. When I went there , there was some valentine special mystery event, where you have to find the questions and solve them . After solving all the questions, show the answer to the staff , if it’s correct they will give you a card. You have games inside ,quiz ,manga drawings. Overall it’s a fun experience

Kurayoshi White Wall Warehouses

Mentioned on
1 list
Historical landmark
Tourist information center
Kurayoshi White Wall Warehouses, a historical landmark located in central Kurayoshi, is home to former breweries and soy sauce distilleries that have been transformed into shops, galleries, and tea houses. The area offers visitors a glimpse into the Edo era with numerous craft shops, Japanese sweet shops, workshops for old crafts and archery experiences.
This is a historical town and street that kept the reminisce of a time long ago in Japan. Of particular interest was this street lined with white houses that used to belong to shop owners and their stores. The back of the street was used as warehouses and that was why there are these little bridges across the stream. Very nice setting.
C N — Google review
On Oct 4, 2024, my wife brought me here. On the face of the old warehouses, they didn’t look interesting to me. My theory has been that anything interesting should be communicative by itself, without the need for researching why it is interesting.
Peter C — Google review
There's not much to see. There aren't many restaurants. It's a historically significant place.
Platinum G — Google review
Historical place for short visit. 1 to 2 hours is sufficient since not much shops or restaurants opened during our visit on Sunday.
Chung K — Google review
Nice small quiet traditional Japanese village. You can see many small shops and most of all there is a great bakery place. A bread looking like a shape of fish with a filling of red bean paste. It costs ¥100 for a piece. You have to try it. Speaking of it now I can remember how crispy the bun was and the filling was so sweet and creamy.
June L — Google review
We did a one hour tour at Kurayoshi "Shirakabe" White Warehouses in Tottori on our 30th anniversary trip, and it was fascinating! The warehouses were from various eras from Edo to Meiji, with glass that was warped due to the manufacturing methods of the day. The guide showed us all the various differences from era to era, which was really cool. The red "Sesshu" tiles looked lovely against the white walls, and black burnt cedar wood skirtings, and it was great to learn about the architectural style of these protected buildings. One oddity was that several shops had life sized "sexy anime mascot girl" cutouts in their store fronts. Maybe "otaku" types would like it, but, these were jarring and added nothing to the history or attraction of the place. Our regret here was that we wished the tour let us have time to browse a bit as there was a craft beer brewery shop, a cool looking café, gallery, local goods, and others which were beckoning. Also it was raining. They say “in Tottori, even if you forget your bento, don’t forget an umbrella” because the wet is so unpredictable.
Rick C — Google review
Located near central Kurayoshi is this historic area where every house, store shop or warehouse takes you back to the Edo era. Lots of great craft shops, small coffee shops, Japanese sweet shops, places to experience old crafts with workshops, and the chance to do Japanese archery. Lots of free parking. Buses from the station are also easy to catch.
Judith M — Google review
Suitable outing for a leisurely afternoon - immerse yourself in the history of old Japan n enjoy a cup of coffee. Just pop in the tourists information centre right next to the train station n get bus information and local map to this spot.

Hakuto Shrine

Mentioned on
18 lists
Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Hakuto Shrine, located in Tottori, may not be the most grandiose shrine, but it holds great significance due to its connection to two of the region's well-known folklores. The shrine is linked to the national folk story 'The Hare of Inaba,' and it is believed that many visit this shrine seeking blessings for healing burns or skin ailments.
A shrine dedicated to the hare of Inaba. The typical buildings of a Japanese shrine would be the torii gate, the cleansing place, main hall, gift shop, a place to hang the small wooden plaques bearing prayers or wishes, donors' names..... One particular unique feature is the Mitarashi Pond, where the water level remains level, never swelling nor declining throughout the year.
GAN Y — Google review
Lovely shrine with a lot of rabbit statues which has a huge burden to carry stones of wishes and hopes.
Nonthicha R — Google review
Very cute shrine with a unique flavor. It’s said to be closely related to the myth of the marriage between Okuninushi and Yagami-hime, so it’s a shrine famous for seeking marriage. And it,s close to the coast and the beach and has an excellent view.
Evans H — Google review
It’s a nice spot right next to the ocean. My friend really wanted to go. So we stopped by and she got a really cute charm. It is a shrine for lovers to see if it will last. People put stones on rabbits stamped with a kanji. I don’t remember exactly which kanji but it is something about a lasting relationship. Definitely worth a quick visit
Grace M — Google review
A very cute temple with lots of rabbits, i wouldn't say not worth it but with the beach in the front quite pleasant to spend half of the day to walk along the beach after temple visit. in between temple and the beach is rest area where you can have some refreshment or meal and of course buy some local produce and souvenirs or have a cup of coffee!
I C — Google review
Hakuto (White Rabbit) Jinja is a Shinto #Shrine in #Tottori. It is the setting of the myth of the White Rabbit of Inabane. It is one of the nicest #Shrine l have ever seen. It is believed that the Shrine's power is to relief from burns and other skin conditions. The shrine is located in a very peaceful pond in the forest with Mitarashi pond where ducks were swimming peacefully.

Sanbutsu-ji Temple

Mentioned on
12 lists
Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Sanbutsu-ji Temple is a national icon located on the vertical face of Mount Mitoku. It offers a unique experience as it is literally built into a cave's mouth. Visitors can explore the area around Misawa town, including the charming Shirakabe area with its traditional Japanese townscape from the Edo period. The temple also serves as a starting point for hiking trails, with Nageiredo Temple being the culmination of the Mitoku trail.
A challenging but short hike leads to this beautiful temple. Make sure to wear proper hiking shoes or else you will have to purchase their traditional slippers (with good grip) for 900 yen. And entry fee is 800 yen + 400 yen for the temple complex. Was a fun adventure!
Viraf P — Google review
Very cool shrine set in the mountains, come prepared for climbing, also the stairs are step and worn from the ages
Only I — Google review
Sorely disappointed as the hiking trail is closed until 1 April as the main highlight has to be up close and personal with the upper shrine. However because it's low season, we had a serene visit to the lower shrine.
Rtexal T — Google review
I loved the mountain climbing but do keep in mind, it’s not an easy claim and going down is even more technical and difficult. The views were beautiful though. I loved it. The whole place and the temple gives a spiritual vibe. This climbing to the top was the highlight of my trip. I enjoyed it very much.
Surina B — Google review
I just love hiking trail. It was so amazing. Definitely worth to do. entry fee is 800 yen. You should bring hand gloves and should not wear snickers. Hiking shoes would be good. Scenic beauty was awesome.

Tottori Sand Dunes

Mentioned on

National reserve
Nature & Parks
Nestled just outside the bustling city center, Tottori Sand Dunes is a breathtaking coastal expanse that stretches for 2 kilometers and boasts towering sand formations reaching heights of up to 45 meters. This stunning natural wonder, shaped over a staggering 100,000 years by sediment from the nearby Sendaigawa River and ocean currents, has become Tottori's most cherished tourist destination.
The Tottori Sand Dunes are truly breathtaking — a unique landscape you wouldn’t expect to find in Japan. Walking across the vast dunes feels like stepping into another world. The view of the ocean from the top is stunning, and it’s a fun experience whether you’re there for a relaxing stroll, photography, or a bit of adventure.
Maleena W — Google review
A desert which stretches along sea coast gives a serene wilderness. It’s a pure bucket list destination. Recommendations: there is no vending machine at the spot so better to bring water with you. Toilet: no Parking: plenty of paid parking. But there is free parking spaces in front of サンコスモスshop.
吉岡 — Google review
The sand dunes were absolutely incredible! It was definitely a workout — walking through the sand was so tiring, but honestly so worth it once you reach the top. The views were amazing and unlike anything I’ve seen before. Such a unique experience — I’d 100% recommend it, just make sure to bring water and good shoes!
Nicole C — Google review
This was my first time treading through a sand dune and IT WAS THE BEST TIME OF MY LIFE! On terms of parking, the price is reasonable and there are a lot of spaces. For the sand dune itself, although it was really windy (As the sand dune was facing the Sea of Japan), the view was very mesmerizing! However, my shoes and socks were covered in sand. So, I recommend you wear sandals / slippers to any kind of sand dunes! Therefore, you’ll have more fun! I highly recommend to go here if you ever have the chance to go to Tottori!
Wong W — Google review
The sand dunes are a really nice attraction, it is so beautiful but be ready to empty you shoes from all the sand afterwards! Go inside the information center to get your stamp if you are collecting them. The parking is 500 yen for 24 hours, but it is only valid as long as you don't exit.
Rosalie P — Google review
Worth visiting and people will not believed you that you are in Japan. The sand dunes is huge and you need to reserve lots of energy to walk both ways to the beach. You can take lots of pictures with the spectacular views…. A place with unique experience in Japan. ❤️
J C — Google review
Go for a tourist stop horseback dune. But, if you cross to the other side (West), where there is more vegetation covered dunes, you will discover plenty of floral and fauna. Not many people on that side.
Ilka D — Google review
AMAZING, if you are in the surroundings areas, this is a must do! I went there in this July 2025 so a little hot but then, you can just jump in the sea. I had a very good time.

(Translated by Google) I came here through an introduction from a friend. The doctors and staff are courteous and you can feel at ease during the treatment. The hospital is also clean, bright and comfortable. Even when I'm waiting in the waiting room, they casually greet me and make me feel at ease. I was concerned about my son's posture, so I brought him there, but the teacher was able to explain things like body distortions in an easy-to-understand way for my son. From now on, both parents and children will be able to attend 😃 (Original)

At the orthopedic clinic, I have been prescribed painkillers and patches, but the painful symptoms that cannot be cured with just that alone have helped me maintain my quality of life and be able to go to work thanks to the techniques of the director and staff. We also provide medical insoles and shoes that are suitable for the patient. Anyway, the atmosphere inside the hospital is always warm and soothing. I had so much pain from my waist to my back that I couldn't sleep with my head up, but I went to Shiro Usagi for a massage, and now I feel much better. During the massage, I was always impressed by the staff as they carefully relieved the areas that really hurt. Now, although it only hurts occasionally, I go for massages and waterbeds regularly. (Translated by Google) Thank you for your help in correcting my straight neck. This is a very trustworthy osteopathic clinic because they carefully and carefully interview patients and check their general condition in order to provide treatments that are tailored to each individual. The explanations during the examination were very easy to understand, using photos and other information. Both machines and hands are used for the treatment, and I felt a significant change even after just one session, so I'm looking forward to seeing the correction course complete! The massage and water bed that relaxed my whole body felt so good! The clinic was clean and the staff were all friendly, so I was able to relax and not feel nervous. There is a large parking lot, and reception is open until late, so depending on the day you can go after work, so it may be a good choice for those who value ease of access. (Translated by Google) I went into the hospital knowing that the cause was sudden pain in my lower back, but the doctor couldn't give me an answer as to which course was best. I didn't know what the treatment was going to be like, and I had been told that some of the pain was coming from body distortion, so I thought that if I chose the whole body course, it would balance out my overall health. It was a pain, but it barely touched my lower back and had no effect. Did you arrive at the conclusion to perform this procedure after listening to the patient's concerns and giving instructions to the staff? I don't think there's any point in giving everyone the same treatment. I was shocked to hear that I would need 12 to 17 treatments at a cost of 5,000 yen each to see significant improvement. I think it's good for people who don't like being jerked off, but that treatment is not included in the full body course. The treatment was performed not by the doctor who diagnosed the patient, but by the staff, who guided them to the massage machine and then gave them a manual massage. I don't feel like it's working at all, either immediately after the treatment or after a few days. I think it might be effective for people who sit for work or who have chronic stiff shoulders. I learned a lot.

It was my first time going to an osteopathic clinic, and I had the impression that it would be a closed-off place, but I was pleasantly surprised by how open and new the equipment was. Above all, I feel at ease because the director and other staff members are kind and courteous. It is also very helpful that the receptionist watches over the children (infants) during the treatment. The procedure is almost painless. I only feel a slight tingling sensation from the ultrasound, and the staff members ask me if it hurts. The massages and water beds are so comfortable that you might fall asleep. I believe that pricing is also set from the patient's perspective. I'm still in the hospital so I don't know if it's 100% effective, but the pain in my body is gone or reduced, and the strain is getting lighter. Overall, I'm glad I went. The Sand Museum

Art museum
Museums
The Sand Museum, located near the Tottori Sand Dunes in Japan, is a unique indoor space that showcases changing exhibits of stunning sand sculptures created by artists from around the world. The museum's concept revolves around 'world travel in sand,' featuring intricate and ephemeral works of art that transport visitors to different parts of the globe. Since 2012, it has been housed in its own permanent residence, making it the only indoor sand museum globally.
The museum has a great concept that every year a selected country of the world is introduced with sand sculptures. The theme of this year is Japan. A dozen topics are arranged in a chronological order to describe how the Japanese history and culture is evolved. My favorite topic is the art of Japan, ukiyoe, for it’s both educational and aesthetically pleasing.

I really appreciated how much information was provided about each piece, which made the experience even more interesting. In my opinion, the entry price is very fair - I would have happily paid more for something of this quality. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Tottori!

I really enjoyed this. I'm a history teacher and the history shown here was amazing. The talent of the sculptures was really awe inspiring. I highly recommend coming to visit here. When I went, it was japanese history. It changes every year.

Insanely pretty! Must visit spot if going to the sand dunes! Relaxing after a long hike as well. Staffs are super helpful too and there’s toilets!!! When we went to the staff to get a locker, they offered us to keep our luggage’s with them! They were super dupe friendly. There’s also a bus nearby, I think 4 lines total so it’s pretty flexible if you want to get to Tottori station or surrounding towns. Would recommend a lot.

Absolutely amazing experience! The museum was so well put together — every exhibit was fascinating and beautifully displayed. I learned so much and genuinely enjoyed every minute of it. The staff were friendly, and everything was super organized. I would highly recommend visiting if you get the chance — definitely one of the highlights of my trip!

I grew up in Tottori, but this was my first time visiting here. It was amazing! This is one of the best places that tourists should visit in Japan. Tottori is the smallest prefecture in Japan, but I’m proud that it has such an amazing sand museum.

By far the most impressive exhibition I have seen for a long time. Blown away by the skills of and detail with which the artists were able to create these sculptures, using nothing but water and sand.

During the Obon festival, Amarube Station was bustling with a large crowd. The station has a historical significance as it once had a railway track that left a lasting impression on visitors. One notable feature of Amarube Station is its connection to Mizukaze, a train that passes through the station. The presence of this train adds to the uniqueness of the station and enhances the overall experience for travelers.

I hope to go on a sunny day next time. The same platform is used both times. It was cold, but the restrooms and waiting room had cushions thanks to the thoughtfulness of the local people, so I thought it was warm even though it was cold. I don't think I can forget the old accident, so I definitely want to visit again. Nowadays, there are many abandoned lines and stations, but I want them to remain forever. The station is built on the side of a mountain, and is also known as the "sky station" because of the beautiful view of the sea, mountains, and fishing villages of the San'in region that can be seen from the top of the station. The station itself has been beautifully renovated and is now a cool concrete station. You can access the station by glass elevator or by walking up. If you walk up, the ground is concrete so you're fine, but it's quite steep, so if you have weak legs, it's better to take the elevator up. If you walk down from the Yobe Station platform, you can see the Yobe Iron Bridge up close, which is impressive and very cool❢ Therefore, it's best to take the elevator up and walk down. Also, when you think of Yobe Station, you think of the Yobe Iron Bridge❢ The place to see the Yobe Iron Bridge, the train, and the San'in Coast Geopark all together is on the mountain opposite the platform. If you go up by elevator, you can walk down a little and go under the iron bridge to the other side, so don't worry❢ Please come and see it in time for your train. Addendum → Updated for the first time in 4 years. I went on a nice day in May 2025. The sky and sea were blue and it was nice to be able to see the train. (Translated by Google) I stayed at this hotel at the end of June 2022 using a Hyogo Prefecture resident discount, and this is my top recommendation for Yumura Onsen. I purchased raw eggs with strings attached from two souvenir shops, including the Arayu Center in front of Arayu, and soaked them in the Arayu hot spring water to make boiled eggs. The shop assistant advised me to soak them for 10 to 11 minutes, so I dipped them into the boiling hot spring water. After cooling them down with cold water, I took them home as a souvenir. The yolks were soft-boiled, just the right consistency, and they were delicious. You can choose 3, 5, or 8 eggs. I bought mine for around 40 to 50 yen each. Some people even tied strings to their own egg cartons to bring their own. The gift shop also sold sweet potatoes and corn with strings attached. It seems like it takes 30 minutes for sweet potatoes. Locals probably make good use of this facility, as they can boil vegetables as they like. The hot spring water is around 98 degrees, so it must be convenient. The steam was thick, and I thought just being around the Arayu hot spring would be good for your skin. Lol There's a foot bath on the riverbank, so it might be nice to take a quick foot bath before the noodles are boiled. Takeda Castle Ruins, also known as the 'Machu Picchu of Japan' and the 'Castle in the Sky,' is a popular destination offering picturesque views from its mountaintop location. Staying overnight is recommended to fully experience the area, with opportunities to witness the ethereal sight of Takeda Castle at dawn or dusk. The region is also renowned for its gourmet offerings, including globally lauded sake wine and Tajima Wagyu beef.
This place is far off the beaten path for American travelers but plenty of travelers from other countries visit and the staff at the top keeps track of which countries. It’s a long hike up if you don’t take the bus. Also it’s windy at the top! No wonder the castle burned at one time that wind would’ve been an assist no doubt. Also JR passes can get you allll the way out here.

I’d recommend going to observation deck 1 on the opposite side of the castle instead. From there you can see a panoramic view of the castle surrounded by clouds. If you hike all the way to the top you can also see the sea of clouds over town in the early morning. You don’t need to come before sunrise to see this effect! Photos in this review are from observation deck 1.

Take a bus from Takeda station to the Takeda ruin stop and you have to take a 20mins hike up to the entrance of the ruins where you can purchase your ticket with a machines. Recommended that you bring 1000yen or coins for the bus rides, bigger notes are okay for the ticket but not the bus. Be prepared to walk alot up and also inside the ruins, to exit the ruins it’s using stairs but they are pretty steep. We came abit too early for the cherry blossom and too late timing for the clouds, so you can plan your trip for it but expected a crowd at those peak periods too.
Zhenyan T — Google review
Absolutely fantastic spot that reminds me of Machu Picchu on its ruins layout and perched atop a mountain. The bus from the visitor centre departs with quite a wide gap in timing so do time it well if you are visiting, else walking or taxi is the only option. The bus takes you near, but still an uphill walk for 900m is still required. As you walk uphill, there's a turn left where the signboard says not to enter from, and that is actually the exit point. Technically if you go through there, then it's free entry? As there is no ticket checks within the ruins itself. However, the ticket price is not at all hefty and I will recommend that we all do our part to preserve this fantastic monument. At the end of the monument, you can see a sweeping view of the Takeda town below.

A few days ago, I travelled with my family to visit the "Takeda Castle Ruins" in Asago-shi, Hyōgo-Prefecture-Japan. It's a bit of a drive from Kyoto, about 21/2 hours to be precise. There are a few options available on maps, and we opted for driving most of it through the countryside. Time-wise, it hardly made a difference. About halfway in, we stopped at an udon restaurant for lunch. Our first stop was high up on NR 163; it's a winding road to the top and easily accessible by car. On the top, there is a spot from where you can see Takeda Castle Ruins. The distance to the castle is just under 3.00 kilometres or 1.8 miles. I used a 70-200 telelens with a 2X extender. The weather was not at its best, with slight rain and dark clouds; still, it was a fun experience. Of course, the prime time to shoot a legendary picture is in late autumn when there is fog in the morning. There is a second spot that is very popular with photographers. Located on the opposite side of the castle, you'll need to hike up between 10 and 30 minutes. There are three observation spots, with number one the hot place and the highest. Because it was getting dark, I opted for the third observation spot. The shooting distance to the castle is just under 2.00 kilometres or 1.2 miles. There is a path, but it is steep and rugged. This area is famous for its clusters of cherry trees during the sakura season. I definitely would like to go back in autumn to see the castle in a sea of clouds.

Took the train from Osaka station, it was quite a long train journey but the views from Takeda castle ruins made me forget about it. A special memory, lots of green and beautiful views of the landscape. Very powerful spot for the spiritually aware. For the fit like me, you can run up it in 20mins. Great exercise & the beauty at the top will rewarding. Best time to visit I was told was really early morning spring, when the whole mountain is covered in mist.

Roadside station Tajima-no-mahoroba

Toll road rest stop
Farmers' market
Roadside station Tajima-no-mahoroba is a captivating stop along the toll road that offers visitors a unique experience. Housing a miniature historical museum, this fascinating spot also doubles as a supermarket, providing an extensive range of goods. If one were to compare Hachis Kita ski resort to an exhilarating F1 motor race, then Roadside station Tajima-no-mahoroba would be the perfect pit stop for refueling.
As far as roadside stations (michi no eki) go this has all you require for a night. Toilets are 24hrs and well appointed. Plenty of parking and close to town. It has a small museum (free).

If you dont mind walking for abt 45 min one way from the JR station, then its a nice place to see beautiful autumn leaves. Its built similar to old confucian styles type of architecture. I went there today for the famous autumn illumination, unfortunately, all the leaves have dropped from the 2 big maple trees. No illumination but still there were other maple and koyo trees around the vicinity which was beautiful. The most important is, there aint many ppl, at least foreigners which has crowded everywhere this year !!
Haru G — Google review
10 Nov 2019, this is still too early for the full autumn color for maple leaves, but the 2 pistachio trees, symbolic of this place is already quite bright. The best time will be around 17 to End Nov.

Akooishi Shrine is a significant and revered Shinto site, characterized by the striking statues of the 47 legendary ronin of Ako that line its path. This sacred shrine holds immense historical significance as it was once the dwelling place of the leader of this renowned group. Its tranquil and serene atmosphere is awe-inspiring and provides an excellent opportunity for visitors to learn about this captivating story.
This was a cool shrine dedicated to the 47 ronin. It was neat learning the history of the event. Seeing statues of them on both sides as you walk into the shrine was a neat thing. My goal of getting a new shrine stamp book was also a thing i was happy I could do whole here.

Oishi jinja shrine is built on the former OISHI’s mansion and enshrines about 300 years ago Samurai Yoshitaka OISHI, the leader of Ako Gishi (the lord of Ako, Naganori ASANO’s 47 loyal servants). “Chushingura” one of the most famous Kabuki play is written to base on the episode that Ako Gishi killed the enemy instead of their lord. Paintings depicting famous scenes from “Chushingura” are on display. The treasure museum displays samurai’s swords, armors and household items. The giant tree in the garden is 350 years old.

Ako Castle Ruins, dating back to the 1600s, are steeped in history and associated with the legend of the 47 Ronin. The castle's design reflects its strategic location and the lifestyle of its former owner. Visitors can compare it with other castles as defense bases and ponder over invasion strategies. Located in Misaki and Osaki areas, Ako offers seaside ryokan with ocean views and delectable seasonal seafood.

Engyōji

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Engyoji, a large Buddhist temple complex founded in 966, is situated on the mountaintop of Mount Shosha, surrounded by lush forest. The area offers a serene hiking trail and boasts impressive temple structures dating back over 1000 years. Known as the 'Hieizan of the West,' Engyoji features numerous halls and pagodas amidst verdant greenery.
A temple complex on top of Mount Shosha. To reach the mountain top, you could either hike the mountain or ride the cable car. I chose the cable car (highly recommended), but there is still 15-20 minutes of inclined walking from the ropeway to the temple through a path surrounded by the forest. My corporate slave joints are complaining but my eyes and lungs are full of gratitude. I went in late spring so there was no cherry blossoms or autumn leaves. However, the green foliage also felt so rewarding. The temple has a wooden stage which is like a balcony, similar to Kiyomizu-dera. There were not many visitors as well, making it perfect for a calm retreat. We could also explore the areas surrounding the main temple building.
Janice L — Google review
The most magical place I've ever been to. You take the ropeway up to the stop. You can either take a bus or hike your way up. I would recommend to walk your way down after taking the bus up. This place is so serene and calming.
Reem Q — Google review
The Engyoji temple is a significant Buddhist temple located on Mount Shosha in Himeji. The temple complex is huge but main parts to cover are the Maniden, Jogyodo, Daikodo, Jikido. You can dedicate an ema for wish fulfilment at Maniden. The Maniden can be reached via a walk up the mountain from the ropeway station. The walk up is around fifteen minutes and has many Kannon statues on the way. Or you can take a shuttle but it comes at some intervals. Majority of the important places to visit are located within five to ten minutes of walk. But also except for Mani den, many of the buildings are not open for public.
Chhanda B — Google review
Take bus 10 from Himeji Bus station to Ropeway stop to Engyoji Temple. Scenic view of Himeji along the ropeway up to the temple. Entrance ticket price is 500 yen. I suggest walking up to Maniden and Daikodo-Jikodo-Jogyodo (Scenes of the Last Samurai movie by Tom Cruise) and taking the bus back to the ropeway (500 yen for both ways or one way. You can make paymemt by cash at the entrance or while boarding the bus). Nice place to spend a morning walk. It can get hot and warm in the later part of the day in summer so prepare to drink more water and wear a hat. Check the timing of the ropeway and bus back to Himeji station. You could also inform the driver if you would like to visit Kokoen Garden or Hemiji Castle as there is a bus stop outside Kokoen Garden. This route is better as after visiting the castle, you will be nearer to Himeji main station and can get a late lunch along the streets.
Siew T — Google review
The cable car ride up to Engyō-ji was great, and I really enjoyed the nature and peaceful atmosphere once there. The temple complex is beautiful and feels wonderfully calm — a nice contrast to the busy city below. Only downside was that Google’s route planning for the way back wasn’t the best, but the visit itself was absolutely worth it.
Christoph P — Google review
Mt Shosha, Himeji, is stunning. Impressive complex, spent about 2 relaxed and very enjoyable hours there. Stunning mid-Nov autumnal scenery. Well worth the visit. Bus direct to cable car which runs every 15mins. Van drives up to shrines for those needing it. Walk to shrines is pretty, uphill but not difficult.
Curry L — Google review
Wonderful despite the rain. Took the bus to the ropeway. Gondola takes 4 min. Paid 1000 yen (500 for temple and 500 for shuttle). You could walk 20 min instead of using the shuttle. You will need to remove your shoes to enter temples. Overall, it was nice and glad we had a guide.
Christa D — Google review

Historical landmark
Koko-en Gardens, located near Himeji Castle in Japan, is a collection of nine themed traditional Japanese gardens. These gardens were built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Himeji municipality. Visitors can enjoy a tranquil vibe as they stroll through the 3.5-hectare area featuring water features and seasonal plants. The garden also includes a tea house where traditional Japanese tea ceremonies are held earlier in the day.
Very beautiful garden. It was clearly well taken care of. There is a clear discipline in how it is kept clean and plants pruned. It was really beautiful to understand the different gardens and how each was styled. It was quite big as well with 12~ gardens to visit. We spent so much time there that we even lacked time to do the boat tour around the castle.
Jeff W — Google review
Much more pleasant and peaceful than inside the castle. Don’t miss it. There’s a tea house inside but it’s currently closed. Maybe bring or apply before coming some bug repellent, otherwise you’ll probably get bitten. Our tickets to the castle included the entrance to the gardens, and I believe most do.
André M — Google review
We visited the garden on a saturday in autumn right after we went to himeji castle. Just like the castle, the garden felt extremely crowded. Most of the flowers and ponds in the garden are nicely arranged and well maintained. However, due to it not being one open garden but it being separated into multiple smaller "compartments", we didn't get the calm, serene feeling we usually got at other gardens and parks in japan.
Lea F — Google review
Very beautiful garden that is easy to navigate and even has a recommend route to finish efficiently. Lots of wonderful fall foliage at this time and lots of ponds and small streams. There is the option for a combo ticket with himeji castle, so I recommend that option so you can hit both on the same trip
Brandon S — Google review
Marvelous gardens near Himeji-jo castle. Several separate Gardens linked together with great landscapes, glimpses of Hinegi castle on the distance and lovely water features with a vast variety of koo fish connected by walkway stones. Theybalso had an impressive ichibana exhibit when we visited.

While Himeji Castle is of course impressive and worth seeing, for me the real highlight was Kōko-en Garden right next to it. It’s beautifully designed, with different sections that each have their own character — ponds, small waterfalls, and perfectly kept greenery everywhere. Peaceful, scenic, and a perfect place to slow down after visiting the castle.
Christoph P — Google review
I have been to Himeji Castle 4 times, and I had never been to Koko-en. This time I made the effort to explore the gardens and I was impressed. I took one of my favourite photos here, with a golden Koi causing the water to glisten in the sun.

Very pretty Japanese garden, which looks amazing during our November visit due to the autumnal colours. It's much bigger than I expected, with several sections to walk around. There was a tea room where you enjoy green tea and sweets, but we didn't have time for this so not sure what it was like. If you get a combined ticket for this garden with the Castle ticket, it's only ¥50 extra than the castle alone!!

Himeji Castle

Mentioned on

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Himeji Castle, also known as Shirasagi-jo (White Egret Castle), is an iconic fortress with a white facade, towers, moats, and cherry trees. Its history dates back to the 14th century when the first castle was established on the site. The present-day castle was initiated by warlord Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1581 and later expanded and remodeled to attain its grand scale.
This place is definitely worth the visit. Far different and more authentic than other castles that we have visited in Japan, the White Crane Castle remains largely in its original form. It is stunningly beautiful, and very well preserved. I strongly recommend taking the option for the limited access additional tour, where you get to see some other areas of the castle. The adjoining gardens were also very nice. Highly recommend going early, as this is a very popular location. Also - strongly recommend booking online to avoid the lineups.
WayneUS N — Google review
Himeji Castle is one of those places that really lives up to the photos. The white castle looks absolutely striking as you walk up to it, and the grounds are peaceful and easy to enjoy. The inside involves a bit of climbing with steep staircases, but it’s worth it to see the wooden interior and the views from the top. It’s a genuinely pleasant place to visit, beautiful, well-kept, and full of history. Tips: 1. We entered around 9 AM, and that turned out to be a great decision. The crowds were still light, so it was easy to walk around and take photos. 2. Spending about 1.5 hour feels just right without rushing.
Ayush S — Google review
Amazing historic castle. Do not miss this one- very beautiful and the grounds are just as pretty. I went right at opening and there were no crowds but as I was leaving it was starting to get busier so go earlier to avoid them. Spend the extra 50 yen when buying your ticket online to get access to the gardens as it’s well maintained and beautiful, with koi fish in many of the ponds! One of the highlights of my Japan trip.

Are you looking to get you steps in? This castle has you covered. Go back in time and imagine the sights and sounds, the views the people before you must have seen from each different level and window. The timber work was amazing. If you are in the area it's worth a look. We got the pass to the garden as well. Great afternoon.

Himeji castle is well preserved. Its easily accessible from Himeji station by a walk of 20 mins. Entry fee for the castle is 1000 yen but since I had JR west pass, i got a discount of 20%. I visited during September month, the weather was bit hot. Post entry gate, I was lucky to find a free english tour guide Hideyo, she explained the history of Himeji castle and should all around the castle with minute details. I really enjoyed visiting this castle

Please Read below if you are wanting to learn about this castle and what it meant to japan. This castle is amazing and is one of the BEST places I had seen in 2 weeks. My experience is 2 part, the first part was the castle which is awesome. The second part was you NEED is a guide to take you through the gardens and castle. It was very inexpensive for the history lesson I got about the castle. This was the most important part. Our guide Nobu, was amazing and was by far the thing that made the tour so amazing. Please use Nobu who has a ge eral passion and love for Meiji castle.

A must see in the Osaka / Kobe region. Impressive Castle ! Nice: You can climb up (steep staircases) the whole casle tower (need to take off shoes). When buying tickets: Do buy the combination ticket with Koko-en garden. Several themed Japanese gardens, some of them are a revelation in the art of gardening. Garden is some 200 m left of the main entrance (street)
Thomas E — Google review
Himeji Castle was amazing. It is best to visit in the morning getting as much natural light as possible. It is possible to do a trip to Himeji as well as going further to Hiroshima on the same day using the Shinkansen. Be warn it will be an early morning to do both trips in a day. From Himeji Train Station it is an easy 10-15 minute walk to the castle grounds. There are many shops and places to grab a quick breakfast or lunch depending what time of the day you arrive. Wear comfortable shoes since it's a gradual incline to the main castle keep. Be very aware you will have to climb steep staircases once inside the castle. We recommend bringing portable rechargeable fans, because you will sweat climbing the stairs. The views are very beautiful from the top. This excursion can be done in under 4 hours from the train station, up to the castle, and back to go to the next destination.

The Kankakei Ropeway is a must-visit attraction for nature enthusiasts and casual travelers alike. Located in the heart of Shodoshima island, it offers breathtaking views of the Kankakei Gorge, one of Japan's most stunning valleys. As the only ropeway in Japan where you can take in panoramic vistas of the sky, valley, and sea simultaneously, it promises an unforgettable experience.
Great experience, especially in the late November with the autumn leaves 🍁 The views were really beautiful and you really get to see the mountains up close. There were a lot of visitors, but the wait time wasn't that bad, because the ropeway goes up pretty frequently.

An absolutely breathtaking experience. The ropeway ride offers stunning views of the mountains, valleys, and the Seto Inland Sea. From the top, the scenery is spectacular and perfect for photos, especially on a clear day. The ride is smooth and comfortable, and it’s one of the highlights of visiting Shodoshima. A must-do if you want to enjoy nature from above and capture unforgettable landscapes. 🌿🚡✨
EryArt 3 — Google review
Even though the ropeway is expensive and old (2700 Yen return), it is really the only way to truly appreciate Kankakei Gorge. The views from both car parkings are ok but nothing comparable to the ones while riding the ropeway, especially in Autumn. It changes slightly every year but it should be pretty red between 12-28th of November.

I took a couple of cable cars going up the mountains in Shikoku during my visit. This is one of them that I think it’s not quite worth it. The cable car was expensive and there isn’t much to see. 🫣🫣🫣 I think you could also drive up there since I saw a car park there. Amazing view but you can see these views in many places in Japan. I think we stayed around 15-20mins and then took the cable car back down. I would say it’s a place for locals to hike. If you have time you can hike since they have a trail for hiking but for tourists like us we didn’t have time to enjoy the hike.
Shelley L — Google review
The station was not large and seemed quite old. Adjacent to the building was a souvenir shop and a fast food eatery, providing outdoor seats too. A large outdoor carpark was next to the station. The scene from the viewing point was great, including the mountain, the city, and the outlying islands. The toilets were large and clean. The staff were very nice, reminding guests nearby of the car departure time. If the visitor was in a rush, they even skipped the check ticket procedure in order to save time.
Joseph C — Google review
Gorgeous breathtaking scenery. The souvenir shop at the summit is okay. But the food stall at the summit is below average. Better to bring your own picnic up, or eat something back down.

Nice view from the top. Ropeway itself is not too exciting, but the view is. Quite expensive for Japan (6000¥ one-way). Shuttle bus from the Port to the Ropeway and back is free, so i guess it’s even.

Shodoshima Olive Park is a Mediterranean-style park and olive grove that offers visitors a taste of Greece in Japan. The park features an abundance of olive trees, a Greek windmill, and greenhouses reminiscent of Santorini. It was even used as the filming location for the live-action version of Kiki's Delivery Service. Visitors can explore hiking paths through the olive trees and enjoy stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea and its islands.
I strongly recommend driving on Shodosbima because the island is big and it will waste much time if you take public transport. This park is good. It’s free of charge and there are many olive trees. You could pick leaves and make bookmarks using the leaves at the souvenir shop. People could find the heart-shaped leaves but I couldn’t :( You could take an instagrammable pictures with a broom provided by the park near the windmill. There is a restaurant on the second floor of the building. The food was fine.
Karen C — Google review
If you like studio ghibli then it’s a must go. The windmill is the highlight of the place. So many people taking photo there. After parking you need to go to the museum, they have a wall where they hang the famous Kiki broom. But sometime you need to wait since many took it for photo. After taking the break you can then head to the windmill. The olive oil ice cream was good also specially after all the jumping 😆😆😆.

tbh it’s frustrating to walk uphill under scorching sun, from the bus stop. it’s a nice olive park tho, big square with art installations and the windmill that everyone is crazy about. big souvenir shop, resto and stuff, even a shrine!! also a tiny museum and noodles place along the road. i spent 3hrs there, but i think most people left faster than i did. once is enough for me; i won’t go again if no one drives me uphill.

Though I am not a big fan of theme park, this scenic olive-theme park was definitely worth a visit. Its herb garden, museum, and olive farm were both beautiful and educational. Potential visitors need to budget their time accordingly as the buses run infrequently (especially in the late afternoon)!

The Olive Garden consists of multiple Greek style structures, like the iconic windmill and the herb garden. It was fun to look for heart shaped olive leaves

Not only famous for the olive, but also with a fabulous scenery!

Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Studio

Water & Amusement Parks
Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Studio, located in Shodoshima, is a picturesque vintage-style village that served as the set for the iconic film 'Twenty-Four Eyes.' The novel, written by Tsuboi Sakae in 1952, tells the story of a schoolteacher and her twelve first-grade students during World War II. The movie studio features a traditional fisherman's house and a wooden elementary school, offering visitors a glimpse into Japan's past.
This is a lovely.place to visit, even if you are not familiar with the film. It is like visiting a folk museum, as there are well curated displays of artefacts as well as a stream with fish and sea cucumbers to spot. There is a good atmosphere and little cafes and restaurants dotted about. The staff in the gift shop were very kind as was the person on the ticket office. There is a boat service across the bay to the Shodoshima Olive Park and beach etc.

You need to pay to visit the site but I think it’s worth it. Very beautiful and relaxing. Some of the time they have tours coming in, so it’s abit crowded. Many place to take photos so if you like taking photo you must go. Many parking outside the site so no need to worry.

My wife really enjoyed some of the books which were based of some of the movie which were filmed here. If you are a historical japanese movie buff black and white movie etc you may have seen one or two that was filmed here. You can go into every building and see photos and articles from all the old movie. If you don't like old movies maybe not worth the visit
Rich R — Google review
Nice scenery but the building and expo are a littéralement bit messy. I would have expect more fous on cinéma world. Many housse just host shop selling unrelated art stuff. Maybe good for a quick stop (but ticket is 1000 yens per adult.

Beautiful and nostalgic place to visit. I bought also a lot of souvenirs. The shop keepers were sooo nice to me. 🩷👍🏻👍🏻

I only stayed outside as I only got 15 mins before the bus comes. I need to catch this bus as my luggage storage ends at 4:30pm. It looks pretty good from the outside, I manage to take a peak from the gaps of the gate, inside seem to have the houses you see in a samurai movie. Visited on 1 Apr 2025

This place exceeded my expectations… admittedly it was a gorgeous day to see the coast and buildings, but a fascinating spot to learn about early Japanese film making and culture. The coffee shop has Italian sodas which hit the spot in the 35 degree heat! The carp and cod to feed in the river are also huge!!!

An old style Japanese film studio. Has some sets and a museum you can visit and walk through. It’s small but if you’re in Shodoshima you didn’t come for large scale things. This is a fun place to walk around. Super cheap admission price. Standard Japanese gift shop for you to shop at inside too.

The Marukin Soy Sauce Museum, a former soy sauce factory on Shodoshima Island, offers educational displays and a shop where visitors can even try soy sauce ice cream. Established in 1904, the museum showcases the island's 400-year history of soy sauce production. While touring the massive indoor space with exposed wooden beams, guests can learn about the process of making soy sauce and see vats of beans and malt percolating.
Learned a lot about soy sauce in this museum! Good smell everywhere and delicious soy sauce ice cream is a must for the visit:)
Ilykwan — Google review
Short and simple museum, but very good value as you get a complimentary bottle of soy sauce plus 100¥ discount for the shop. The soft serve soy sauce ice cream is really good. Worth walking up the road to the nearby sake brewery and bakery, they're really good.
Holly P — Google review
We were disappointed in this museum. There is no interactivity at all, just exhibition items. We were hoping to be able to see the soy sauce production but there is nothing like that here. The soy sauce soft serve ice cream was tasty tho.
Crina B — Google review
It is a beautiful place full of aroma and history. You need to pay a small fee to enter the museum but you’ll find plenty of informations on the soy sauce factory process inside. Worth a visit if you’re in the neighbourhood. The soft serve could be a tiny bit more flavourful ! If you visit when there is a tourist bus incoming, it can be crowded inside.
Courrier F — Google review
Nice to stop by if you are in the island - it’s interesting to know how soy sauce has been made in old days. Soy sauce ice cream is sold at the small shop next to the museum which seems to be more popular than the museum itself. Some souvenirs are also available. Free parking available and the whole area smells like soy sauce.
Aya M — Google review
A great way to find out how soy sauce is made! In the museum there were English explanations under the Japanese, so even though I can read kanji fairly well I felt like I understood the process better 😉 We couldn’t tour the factory but we did see the vats of beans and malt percolating. And the smell was something else!!
Julie M — Google review
A fine place to learn about how to make soy sauce. Visitors get to learn the history of soy sauce making on Shodoshima island. Small and historic place. Soy sauce ice cream is acceptable, worth a try. But not many will like it.
Jeff C — Google review
You can smell the soy fragrance in the air!! Make sure to visit the wooden barrel aging room and also of course the ice cream!

Tojo Lake Toy Kingdom

Water & Amusement Parks
Tojo Lake Toy Kingdom is a charming theme park designed specifically for young children, making it an ideal destination for families. With attractions like a merry-go-round and Ferris wheel, as well as a pool and game rooms, there's plenty to keep the little ones entertained. The park caters to kids aged 3 and up, ensuring that even the youngest visitors can enjoy themselves. A designated restaurant on-site alleviates any concerns about meal times, allowing families to focus on fun rather than logistics.
This place was a lot of fun. A lot of the attractions are old but for kids five and under they will have a blast. Especially for the price you can have a lot of fun and not break the bank. Food there was actually really good and not overpriced. We went on a Friday and it was not crowded at all. There are some Many attractions that you need to pay extra money, but it’s not that much more. Plenty of parking and great indoor activities for kids three and under. They have a section of wooden toys that is so much fun for little ones and great for the parents to be indoors outside of the heat or the cold.

We visited Tojoko toy kingdom yesterday. It was very sunny and we enjoyed various kinds of attractions in the park. Here is a theme park specialized to toys. Therefore, the park is very suitable for young children and family. Since restaurant is designated in the park. We don't have to warry about lunch issue. And we can access here from JR Shin Sanda by free bus transportation. Without a car, we can enjoy it. Just a recommendable park for your daughters and sons. Please enjoy. PS Battle event of Bayblade burst was held in the park. It may be planned regularly in the park. If your children or you have any interest to the Bayblade burst, I recommend you to go here with your favorite Bayblade. In addition, please check the rule in advance. Good luck.

This is my second visit. My kid was 2 years during my first visit. Now, 4 years old. We had a great time. Depending on your kid's interest, you may decide to skip buying the unlimited pass. Worth a visit.
Sarang D — Google review
It is absolutely a wonderful place to take young kids (ages 2-11 or so). They will love the rides, and if you go on an off day (we went on a Monday) you can get the place practically to yourself. The employees are all fantastic, and so hospitable there. They do need to give the place a facelift, because it is showing its age.
Jason P — Google review
Huge place plenty of attractions with a 2k ticket fee per adult. It has also a few stored where children can play with trains and cars. I just missed a bit of facility maintenance (wrecked walls and some dirty toy statues) but in general it is a very recommended park for your kids
Alberto R — Google review
Nice staff, but a tad run-down. Kids (3 and 4) had fun, though not much they could really do, ride wise. The play rooms kept them the busiest. All and all, just Okay.
W F — Google review
The place is ok, you'll pay to get in then keep paying for any rides your want to get on. The water park is just big enough for the kids to have fun. Both places are not maintained and show their age.
Marck — Google review
I didn't go on any rides, mostly just let my daughter play with a bunch of toys. Its best to think of it as a way to try out today and see if you want to buy them for your little one. Wire pricey though
