Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Nestled at an elevation of over 3,000 feet atop Mount Mitake in Tokyo's Ome City, Musashi Mitake Shrine is a historic red Shinto shrine accessible by a scenic cable car ride. The shrine boasts intricate murals, carvings, and statues, offering visitors a glimpse into ancient Japanese art and culture. Pilgrims can also experience traditional Japanese meals and accommodations at Higashibaba, which consists of buildings dating back 150 years.
A very beautiful shrine. Unfortunately it’s only open until 16:00 / 4PM. But you still can visit it after the hours. You just can’t go inside. The way to the shrine is also very beautiful with the lanterns.
Ryusei H — Google review
Magical mountain shrine with breathtaking views and a sacred wolf guardian 🐺 If you’re looking for a spiritual escape just outside of Tokyo, Musashi Mitake Shrine is a hidden gem. Located at the summit of Mt. Mitake, this ancient Shinto shrine is known for its guardian deity — the wolf, revered as a protector against evil and disasters. It’s a rare and powerful symbol in Japanese mythology. The shrine is reachable by the Mitake Cable Car, which boasts the steepest incline in the Tokyo area — a fun and scenic ride up the mountain. From the cable car station, there’s a moderate hike of about 30–40 minutes, with some steep paths, but it’s a great workout surrounded by lush forest and fresh mountain air. The atmosphere at the top is peaceful, energizing, and spiritually refreshing. Whether you’re into hiking, history, or nature, this place offers a bit of everything. You’ll also find some beautiful torii gates, stone lanterns, and panoramic views along the way. Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and try to go on a clear day to enjoy the views! Highly recommended for a day trip that connects culture, nature, and spiritual calm.
G K — Google review
The cable car is 1200 yen round trip then a short hike to the shrine. The shrine is pretty big and there are stores and restaurants that are close to it on the mountain. Provides a beautiful view on a clear day. The path is nice and well maintained but be prepared for a steep hike.
Marc Z — Google review
This place is worth visiting. Really beautiful temple in top of the mountain. You can also experience the Cable car service on the ways. Allocate at least half of your days.
Sandesh P — Google review
Musashi Mitake Shrine, where a mythological wolf guided legendary warrior turned emperor Yamato Takeru to safety. Believe it or not, the air at 929 meters above sea level is fresh and climbing all these stairs is good for your blood pressure and calorie burn. In regular, non COVID times I saw some gift offering rituals in the back, more sacred area, but I’m not sure all of them are held today. It was also sad to see a lot of the shops and hotels struggling and either close permanently or temporarily. So if you’re a dog-person (or any pet) do yourself a favor, support small businesses, get your pet an omamori and stay healthy by visiting this amazing place.
Omri R — Google review
Perfect hike with your furry friend. Pets are welcome on the cable car going up to the shrine and may even be blessed at the temple.
Stephanie N — Google review
Get off at the Mitake train station. You can take the bus and cable car to get to the shrine. Or you can hike up the mountain. The shrine is pretty nice but there are lots of steps. It is not disabled friendly so be aware . There are many walking paths and photo opportunity spots all around. It's a great way to experience something just outside of Tokyo.
Albert N — Google review
Beautiful scenery and a great exercise hike 👍 The shrine was just the start of a really fun yet challenging hike and the trees during the fall were bright and colorful, so the trip seemed much more relaxing. Just a wonderful experience to have. I'd recommend it for anyone who is physically able.

Mountains
Mount Mitake is a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers, located just a 1-2 hour drive or train ride from central Tokyo. The area offers stunning views of lush greenery and surrounding mountains. Visitors can take a funicular or hike to the peak, where they'll find the Musashi Mitake Shrine dedicated to a white wolf deity. The mountain is part of the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, featuring walking trails, waterfalls, and scenic landscapes.
Very nice hike suitable for beginners! You can drive all the way up to the cable car because there’s a convenient parking lot. Kei cars might have some trouble driving to the top because it’s very steep lol be careful on icy days there’s lots of signs warning of slipping!
Akira — Google review
A wonderful hike up Mt. Mitake to visit the temple at the summit. Start by taking the ropeway up, then head to the tourist information counter to pick up maps and details about the trail. Be sure to visit the Rock Garden—it's a highlight of the hike. There's also a large rock you can climb for a bit of fun. The round trip takes about two hours.
Kee H — Google review
It's a pretty awesome place to hike. Easy for beginners. You can take a bus right outside Mitake station, turn left, cross the road, and turn left. Or just ask the visitor centre and ask for a map.The bus is scheduled, so do take note of the time. Once you board the bus, it will take you all the way to near the cable car. You will need to walk uphill for 5 mins to reach the cable car station. Once there, I suggest you take note of the cable car timing to prepare the time to descent. After exiting the cable car station, you will need to walk for abt 10 min on a stretch of road to reach the town. To even reach the start of the walk to the shrine, you will need to cont uphill inside the town. Those who are planning for the Nanayo waterfall, you will need to go to near the shrine, and turn left, follow the sign board. Overall, you can walk 1 loop to the nanayo waterfall> rock garden> ayahiro fall> cedar trees> shrine. Spent a total of 2.5 hr or less for the route. Its steep initially will downhills and slopes then slippery rocks and icey pathways w snow, followed by gentle path back to the shrine.
Chrystabel G — Google review
I can really recommend Mount Mitake as a day trip from Tokyo. Breathtaking views. Just remember that if you take the last cable car down from the mountain you will miss the last bus to Mitake train station :)
Alfred H — Google review
Great hiking and shrines to visit Cable car is ¥600 one way saves 1 hour on foot, but the beautiful forest is worth the walk with all their sacred old trees
Jordan D — Google review
Anyone can easily reach the summit by taking the mountain train. The streets near the summit were old-fashioned and interesting. It is not that crowded, so you can take your time to explore the nature.
Rintaro — Google review
I climbed here by using Senzoku trail to first summit Odake and after Odake, Mitake felt like heaven by how easy it was to get on top and go back down.
Mert K — Google review
Easily accessible by train. Good for a day trip outing. Can take the Cable cart too. Need to walk a bit to reach the Nanayo waterfall. There is a place mentioned as Rock Garden but actually there is no specific Garden such as instead the route to Ayahiro waterfall is surrounded by rocks and the water stream in between that is the Rock Garden.

Nice dam lake with the beautiful views surrounding the lake with the bridges.
Jeck L — Google review
I visited this place on 29 Nov 2024. There were very few tourists. Traveling here is quite limited if you don’t drive, as the area is quite vast. However, there are buses available. I love this place; it’s more beautiful than I could have imagined. But it takes quite a long time to get here and requires several transfers. If you have time, finding accommodation nearby would make the trip less tiring.
Gingger — Google review
Oct. 14, 2024 2nd monday of October. Sports day. From the parking with the toilet head to the dam Cross to the other side, and in the middle of the bridge, there's observatory. Don't miss it! It's worth going to see the dam structure and miniature.
Miyuu — Google review
It is a beautiful lake accessible by train and bus from central Tokyo in about 2.5h. The lake has a serene atmosphere which is very soothing after experiencing busy Tokyo.
Warre Y — Google review
I came here by bus from Okutama JR station. I stopped at Lake Okutama “奥多摩湖”. Firstly, I surprised about the big lake and it’s beautiful deep blue color. Then I climbed the observatory to see the whole scene of the Lake, the Ogouchi dam, the mountains. It was a bit scary to look down from the window but it was a great view. There is a good atmosphere and a beautiful nature here. I was healed so much from my busy days.
Flymt2moon — Google review
Definitely an must visit place if you are Japan. One of the beautiful places I visited. Prefered time to visit is autumn. You can get busses from Okutama station to Lake Okutama. The journey with mountains valleys and autumn colours will be amazing to see. Get down at the dam and spend sometime there. But the real view comes later take the bus from the dam again and get down at Ideno bus stop. This place seems like no where but if you walk a little 100m from the bus stop you can find a opening that will lead you down hill and directly to the bank of the lake. You can get the best view of Lake and the surrounding mountains from here. It was stony and dangerous but also exciting and thrilling.

The zoo is designed to be interactive and engaging, allowing kids to experience nature in a fun and educational way. Beyond the animals, the zoo features a huge park with multiple playgrounds, making it an ideal spot for kids to run around and enjoy. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing, providing a great escape from the city’s hustle. Overall, Saitama Children’s Zoo is a must-visit for families with kids. Whether you’re looking for a fun day out or a peaceful nature retreat, this place has something for everyone! Highly recommended!

Amazing experience at Saitama Zoo! We didn’t have enough time to go to all the exhibits but everything was clean, staff were friendly, the animals were very unique and kept in comfortable & clean enclosures. One of the best zoos we’ve been to in Japan. We will be back!
Ellie — Google review
Very big and beautiful zoo, good for stay in a quiet place with family or friends. A lot of green in a vaste park, not many species of animals but have a good apace to live there. The park look clean and quiet. Easy to reach with the bua from the train station.
Therealzedd — Google review
was only there for 20 minutes to quickly see the capybaras bathing. the baths were not on, there were 3 capybaras nothing like the reviews I’ve seen, the park was massive and hard to get around lots of walking and up and down steep roads, as we were only there for 20 minutes my opinion is a bit biased as I didn’t get to see the whole park and experience and maybe came at a bad time. I would like to come back here for a day trip so I can review this zoo more thoroughly and hopefully get the experience others have reviewed about. Also one of the food stall owners was trying to give us more food (and charge more) than we asked for because of our language barrier. we kept telling her no and she wouldn’t listen. The food was not that great but the noodles with pickled ginger were really good. I hope this helps!
E11e — Google review
Pretty zoo. It might not have like LOTs of animals, but the ones that are there look healthy and have a nice habitat. Also the place is big and it is such a nice experience to go. The even have a "train" to move around the park. There are restaurants, café and food trucks available inside the zoo. It is worth checking the a activities they gave through the day so you can go on time.
Silvia H — Google review
It's so much fun! Before going there, I was expecting it to be pretty small and to get around in about 2 hours at a stretch but it's huge. You could just enjoying walking around the place but there are loads of things to do. The admission price is cheap (seemingly too cheap - I thought I had heard the wrong price) and the animals seem happy and well looked after. As well as the animals there are other things to do like the adventure playground, shops and some really good food vans as well (see photo). I am going to recommend it to everyone!
Joe B — Google review
A place definitely for children! The kids will enjoy looking at the animals and they'll learn about these animals too. The place is big for walking, good for cardio! We recommend this place for family, just bring your stroller if you have a child.
Sirius — Google review
Close to Tokyo but still you can feel rich nature here. And it is very much enjoyable zoo with family members. In a adequate size, you can enjoy both watching animals and walking here.

Easy access. Helpful staff. Peaceful and beautiful large park. I have been here on the last day of illumination autumn maple trees. Simple but Nice lighting.not too crowded.

This is a huge park perfect for elementary kids. You can easily spend half a day inside. They have different playground facilities that are well mentained. We entered from the South gate, rented bicycles, then went to the West side of the park. We only had time to play around Kids Dome, Water park, and Wood obstacle course. Kids had a blast. 700 yen for parking. 600 yen for 3H adult bicycle 450 yen for entrance for adults (elementary and younger are free)
Marc — Google review
The park is huge and not possible to see every corner of it on foot, but there are some main areas that visitors can visit easily thanks to the signboards. The car park might be trouble on a busy day but driving is still the best way to reach out to the park.

Very beautiful scenery. Easy to find the parking. Btw, this poor Anpanman was left here. Did someone's child forget him? 🤔🥺

Beautifully-landscaped park. Gardens with sculptures, pond, gurgling creek, open fields, bike route, paved and unpaved strolling paths. Small enough park to walk all over, perfect for spending half a day or so. Nice place for family, friends, couple, pets for relaxing & enjoying nature. Would like to come back for evening lighting for garden/sculpture viewing. If you feel more active, bike rental available, 450 yen for 3 hours. Lots of short stretches of moderate rolling hills on winding, paved route. Fairly small park but the bike route feels wild with nature. Plenty vending machines, bathrooms, cafes, and a few food trucks. Fair parking, 650 yen, entire day. Takes credit/debit card, but some spots cash only.

This place is so good! I recommend to rent a bike here. We can ride around the park, since the park is huge. I went to this park in spring. There are three type of flowers; lupine, nemophila and poppy. The entrance fee is ¥450 and rent a bike is around ¥400/ 3 hours. I really like this place!

Kodai Hasu No Sato, also known as Ancient Lotus Park, is a stunning green space that showcases the beauty of seasonal cherry and lotus blossoms. This park is home to an impressive collection of 42 different types of lotuses, which bloom in the morning and gracefully close up by afternoon. The flowers can reach sizes up to 20 centimeters in diameter!
The rice field mosaic was amazing! It’s worth visiting. Lotus was out of season when I visited here but the park is nice place to take a walk. The fee of the tower is 400yen and free for the park.

I visited Gyoda on 9th August 2025 for the Demon Slayer rice field art, but coincidentally discovered this beautiful Lotus Museum. It turned out to be a wonderful surprise, I got to learn so many new and interesting things!
Akash B — Google review
Favourite spot for lotus viewing! In 2025, the rice field art is Tanjirou! It's gorgeous! There's a huge line, so keep that in mind! We visited on 19th July! The lotus are in full bloom!
Giga Y — Google review
I actually came to see the Tanbo Art (a huge fan of Kimetsu, yes I am) But truly, the lotus here is so pretty. It give you calmness and soothing to the eyes. It feels like being caress or pat on the shoulder after working hars. It is goos to be there. There is many stall that sell food and drinks. The tenants is all kind and warm. And there is one souvenir's shop that you must visit. They sell anything about lotus or about the tower there. They sell lotus product and town's specialty.
Ash V — Google review
Visited the rice paddy art in the end of September. The peak season for the lotus flowers and art is the end of July, but the trip to see the rice art is more than worth it. The scale of it is an impressive site in person. Photos do not do this place justice. The lotus museum/information center below the tower was quite interesting as well! There is lots to do in this area so I recommend making a day trip and visiting the castle and other parks nearby!
Alexis B — Google review
I missed the lotus season but I was still able to see a few kinds of lotus flowers there. I enjoyed strolling and taking pictures there. There’s a musical background in the park so it was relaxing just to sit and appreciate nature. Entry to the park is free but if you want to view the park and the rice field art from the tower, you need to pay 400 yen. See more photos on my Instagram (@sherylgim).

Oshi Castle, a reconstructed stronghold and significant site from Japan's Warring States Period, is located in the charming city of Gyoda. This historical gem is renowned for its resilience during a prolonged siege by warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1590, earning it the affectionate nickname 'Turtle Castle.' The castle has been beautifully renovated to serve as both an attraction and a venue for exhibitions that delve into local history and samurai culture.
Worth the trip as this castle is full of good history in many points. The castle is filled with exhibits on every level so there on't be a bored moment. The grounds is well kept and photo ops are at several majestic spots.

The castle is only three floors and the view is limited. The museum is the main attraction and it’s bigger. The gardens are cute. The words are all in japanese, but is possible to have an audio guide in english (500¥ as a deposit) Entrance fee: 200¥

Another little treasure in Saitama. Not all of the complex is original and most has been rebuilt. The grounds are well kept with many sitting areas to enjoy the views. To enjoy the castle grounds is free but the on site museum building costs ¥200 to enter.

This is a castle located in Gyoda, made famous by the drama 'Rikuoh.' While the castle itself is small, visiting the museum where you can learn about the local history, and then seeing the castle, I believe provides a deeply enriching experience.

It was closed when I arrived, so couldn't go inside. Finally can only see from the outside. This castle was built on a very large land. The Castle building is still there, standing strong and strong.

Oshi Castle Note: parking available The castle grounds and the surrounding areas are free to tour and walk around. They are well kept, have some aesthetic areas for photos and some seating areas to enjoy the peaceful nature of this place. Dogs are also welcomed. Attached to the main castle grounds area is a museum but that does have an entry fee and as I am not wanting to spend much I chose not to go. Overall the place is well preserved but quick to tour if not going to the museum. You can walk around the property in about 10 minutes I would assume the museum adds some time to it.

The place is not a day trip from Haneda Airport, but can be reached in less than two hours from Omiya, a city in Saitama Prefecture, or from lodgings in the retro area (by train). The shaved ice here is very famous, but you will have to wait more than 2 hours for your order. The fresh greenery in Saitama can be enjoyed from late April. Summer is very hot and humid. The best time to visit is in May, before the rainy season starts.

Scenic spot with rock formations and a cool river. You can buy tickets for rafting and riding a boat but the lines are long.

When you walk far away enough from the area everyone is in, it is a nice place to relax and watch some frogs. If you move the frogs will bury themselves underground, but if you stay very still, they'll emerge, and they are very cute. It seems you can ride boats here too, but it's just a nice place to walk along the river really.
Hercules W — Google review
A really beautiful place to have a stroll around. Trails are parallel to the river with many spots to sit and have a snack, take pictures and look at the beautiful river view.
Matan K — Google review
Too many tourists. I haven't been out much this past 10 years in Japan. It was a shock. The area is picturesque, and a nice drive, lots of winding roads (if you like that sort of thing). The actual area around the one little rocky outcrop, it's your regular fare of touristy shops. Nothing I would write home about. The boat rides were also busy. I don't really see it as a too relaxing. I think there are better places to enjoy the water and solitude.
MR. R — Google review
It is an unusual terrain with a series of huge rock formations. There are many people near the boat pier, but as you move away from that area, the number of people decreases. It is a very relaxing place rich in nature. The kids enjoyed their rocky adventure. We can find many tadpoles and frogs here. The view of the boats on the river is also beautiful. The boats are very popular and you may have to wait in line for quite a while to get tickets.
Rintaro — Google review
Beautiful place to enjoy the nature. But not really recommended to visit in winters (of course you can just mark it off on the checklist). Preferably go in spring/summer. DON'T do the boat ride. It's so useless. 1000 yen for a 20 minutes ride. They may shorten the ride according to them but will not change the price. NOT WORTH. Other than that, great place to enjoy nature and good food.

Saitama is quite far, but definitely a unique experience! Its beauty and simplicity makes the place even better. It’s also a great place for adventure, as there are many different things to explore.

Nestled at the base of Mount Hodo, Hodosan Shrine is a revered religious site with a rich history dating back to 111. This shrine boasts intricate carvings and a main hall that was reconstructed during the early Meiji Period. It is also famous for its association with the legendary hero Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, who is rumored to have bathed in a nearby pond.
Chasing autumn leaves, arrived around 6 PM. The temple was lighted up and we had the rare pleasure of sharing this with just a few others. Only November!

Visited on 6 Nov. Autumn leaves for this year are late, so the shrine is not so pretty. Nevertheless the shrine is still impressive

Absolutely worth coming to see the plum blossoms! It was my first time witnessing such beautiful and fragrant plum blossoms – truly delightful. Taking the ropeway round trip costs 600 yen, and if you come by car, parking is 500 yen. I highly recommend coming here to relax; starting from January, you can enjoy the plum blossoms, and they should be in full bloom by February.

Beautiful, well-maintained shrine. Momiji making it even better. 10-15 min walk from Nagatoro station, slightly uphill. We went on a Saturday morning a bit earlier than most of the crown. At around 11am as we were departing, more people are pouring in so I think it can get crowded on weekend peak hours.
Xyra N — Google review
A really well cared for, clean and beautiful. Free parking at the bottom of the shrine. Not very stroller friendly because if the stairs and pebbles so baby carry or walking is best.
Danielle M — Google review
Quiet place. The shrine is very beautiful and same with all places in Japan very clean and organize. A lot of parking spots. A quick tour will be sufficient.
Kevin R — Google review
Hodosan shrine enshrines the Emperor Jimmu who founded Japan. I instantly felt an atmosphere, enhanced by the shinto music playing on the grounds, as we approached the torii of the shrine. The benevolence of the shrine is believed to be protection from disasters. It is a common place for hikers to pay homage as one of the three Kami (Gods / Deity) enshrined here is a mountain deity. But it is also because the shrine has a sub branch at the top of Mt Hodo - hikers pray at the base shrine and then climb to the top of Mt Hodo and devote there too. The architecture of the almost 2000 year old shrine is magnificent. The various auxiliary shrines are impressive too. And the grounds are beautiful. It is easily accessible by public transport too, as you can walk up from Nagatoro station in about 10 to 15 minutes.

Hodosan, also known as Chichibus Mt. Hodosan, is a 1,631-ft. mountain in Nagatoro area that offers a variety of attractions for visitors. The mountain features a colorful shrine and is famous for its beautiful flowers, including wintersweet, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and azaleas. Visitors can take an aerial tramway to the summit to enjoy the stunning views and vibrant blooms.
Gorgeous autumn colors and there were groves of plum (ume) trees on the top of the mountain so spring would be lovely, too! Highly recommend it.
Joelle K — Google review
A colorful shrine, mountain hiking, richly flavored mushroom soup (at the entrance to the cable car), and a cable car ride to the top to see the plum blossoms. This early in the season (end of February) it’s mainly the yellow plum blossoms, but by mid-March the pink, red, and white blossoms should be in full bloom. Have a bowl of fresh mushroom soup before riding the cable car and if you’re still hungry there is charcoal roasted ayu (a river fish similar to trout). Or, wait till you get to the top of the mountain and have a bowl of soba, udon, or ramen. Access by car (about 90 minutes north of Tokyo in Saitama Prefecture) or by train (free shuttle from the train station to the cable car base). Makes for a nice day trip, plenty of outdoor open space, and if you have youngsters they’ll enjoy the cable car ride).

3.5 stars They had many instagrammable photo areas and for some reason another photo theme was Winnie the Pooh and they had many areas set up for photos. As with all premium outlets in Japan it's nothing compared to prices of outlets in North America. It's a lot smaller than the outlet in Gotemba or Karuizawa... But it's much more accessible because it's not too big and it's far less crowded which makes it all more pleasant. I think outlet malls are a little bit cheaper this year maybe due to Corona and sluggish moving inventory. Most shops had additional 20 to 30% on top of the already reduced prices. On a hot summer day it's really not recommended because there's not much refuge from the humidity and heat. It's a very dog friendly place and many owners had brought their pets. The cosmetics shop was really crowded! Lots of discounted Clinique items. MAC eyeshadows that go for over 3000yen retail outside were selling for about 1000yen. A must stop for cosmetics-lovers.

Nestled approximately 74 kilometers north of Tokyo, Ashikaga Flower Park is a renowned 23-acre floral paradise that first opened its doors in 1968. The park boasts an impressive collection of seasonal thematic displays, including the famous 150-year-old wisteria tree designated as a national monument.
Ashikaga Flower Park is sublime and I didn’t even visit during wisteria season. I only saw the main wisteria tree in its barren form, but due to its great size and outstretched vines, I just know it is an amazing sight when it is in full bloom. Even without wisteria, the other flower arrangements are gorgeous. I got to try wisteria ice cream, which was such a pretty purple. The taste was rather mild, but unique. I loved the gift shop. So much purple! It was a sight for sore eyes for a purple fiend like myself. There were so many different types of omiyage—many non-purple products, too—that I probably spent as much time browsing in the shop as I did the flower park. I had a great time and would absolutely love to visit again when the wisteria bloom.

“Ashikaga Flower Park" is truly breathtaking, especially during wisteria season. The藤の花 create magical tunnels of purple, white, and pink, glowing beautifully at night when illuminated. The park is well-organized, with clear paths and plenty of spots to take photos. It’s easy to access from the nearby station, making it a convenient day trip. While it can get crowded during peak bloom, the stunning藤の花 displays are absolutely worth it. A must-visit for flower lovers. Especially nowadays, this place might seem as a model for "Demon slayer 鬼滅の刃", so thanks to t, it attracts more visitors than before.

Ashikaga Flower Park – Where Nature Paints Its Own Fairytale Just a short train ride from Tokyo, Ashikaga Flower Park is truly a dreamland for anyone who loves flowers, colors, and a touch of magic. I finally got to visit this iconic spot in Tochigi Prefecture — and honestly, it’s every bit as breathtaking as the photos! The highlight of the park is, of course, the wisteria (fuji). Imagine walking under endless tunnels of soft purple, pink, and white blossoms gently swaying in the breeze. The air is perfumed, the light filters through the petals like watercolor, and everything feels otherworldly. The park’s 150-year-old Great Wisteria Tree is the real showstopper — its canopy of flowers looks like a purple waterfall cascading from above. Even beyond wisteria season, Ashikaga blooms beautifully year-round with tulips, roses, hydrangeas, and azaleas, so there’s always something to admire. If you can, stay until evening — the night illumination is stunning! The entire park glows with millions of lights reflecting off the ponds, making it feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale garden. A few tips: check the bloom calendar before you go, as timing makes all the difference. The best period for wisteria is usually mid-April to mid-May. Go early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid crowds, and definitely try the wisteria-flavored ice cream — it’s as pretty as it tastes! Ashikaga Flower Park isn’t just a garden — it’s a full-senses experience that leaves you in awe of nature’s beauty. If Japan is on your travel list, add this to your itinerary. Trust me, it’s worth every step.

October 25,2025 -5pm One-time entry only Pretty small park, but attractions are left and right, so it's not really boring, especially at night illumination. You enter thru the shops There's a photography souvenir for free with a tiny photo and you can buy the big photo for 1500 yen, it has the ashikaga design photo card which is really nice not just plain photo print Autumn roses were beautiful. Blooming lotus and cosmos. By the wisteria illumination, it is very fragrant. I'm not sure if they used a wisteria diffuser or its a different scent by other plant. It smells so good. Worth the visit

It's an extraordinarily beautiful park that offers a beautiful scenery of the Wisteria flowers (when in bloom), but also a show of many lights and exhibitions that you can take your time strolling around and enjoying. I definitely recommend coming here, especially in April or May, when the Wisterias are in bloom, it's simply magical 🌹
Evelyn K — Google review
Been here for 5 times and this place is still amazing. You can spend time for long hours enjoying the scene, lights, music, and good food with decent price. Totally recommended place to visit with you family in Spring, Autumn, and Winter

This flower park is a must must must visit. Late April-May is the prime season for Wisteria flowers and I went in the evening time when its most beautiful. There is a separate ticketing for post sunset hours starting at 5:30 pm. If you aren't a regular visitor, I highly recommend you go for the post sunset hours. They are incredibly awesome to look at. They also have an ice cream outlet with Wisteria flavors, so delicious. The Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo makes it a faster visit to Oyama from where you can take a 30 min local to Ashikaga and the park is just right outside the station. Do not miss this place.

(Translated by Google) I visited the Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Museum and listened to a lecture by an android of Shibusawa Eiichi. The exhibits and the lecture itself were both fantastic. The lecture was an audio recording of Shibusawa Eiichi's voice, with an android that looked just like him mimicking his speech, mouth movements, and gestures. Unfortunately, when I listened, the android's movements froze after the first two minutes, and the lecture was audio-only. A museum staff member said that the professor must have been tired, but personally I think a sincere apology for the malfunction might have made me more likely to visit again.

(Translated by Google) I checked in around 1:20 PM on Saturday and was able to attend the 1:30 PM lecture. I thought I'd need to make a reservation in advance, but maybe it's not that crowded these days. The lecture consisted of a pre-lecture by the moderator, a lecture by the android, and a Q&A session with the android from the moderator, totaling 30 minutes. The content of the lecture was a modern adaptation of the "Theory of the Unity of Morality and Economics." It's a common misconception that "being poor is pure and beautiful, and being rich is tainted," but "morality" and "economics" should coexist and advance together. It's wrong to seek profit for one's own selfish gain, but pursuing profit for the sake of society and people will make everyone happy and the country prosper. I thought androids would just lip-sync to the audio, but they also included facial expressions, including eyelid movements, and hand gestures, which made me realize how close they'd gotten. However, I think an elderly person could be more expressive and move more gracefully. It's quite difficult. There was someone in the reference room who was there to give explanations, and said, "If there's anything you don't understand, please ask." I asked a few questions, and they were all explained to me in great detail. Two years have passed since the taiga drama aired, and my memory of it has faded considerably, but I was able to understand it better, thinking, "That happened, didn't it?" and "Oh, so that's what it was."

Ashikaga Gakkō, also known as the Ashikaga School, is a historic and picturesque site in Japan. It holds the distinction of being the country's oldest school, with its remains designated as a national historic site. The school was restored in the Muromachi period and thrived for many years with up to 3000 students. Notably, it was visited by Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier in 1549 who praised it as the largest and most famous school in Japan.
I’ve got to admit that this buildings site, which had been the nationally highest educational institution in Japanese academia such as Confucian ethics and Kokugaku from medieval for a long time, is not that entertaining or many things fun to watch, but is pretty elegant and very educational sightseeing spot you should visit at least once. I admire the local people who have cherished and been making great efforts to preserve not only solemn buildings and beautiful trees, but also the spirit and significance of the school’s existence. I humbly sense that that is still making this place well worth visiting.

An ancient school that has been changed into a museum. Worth the ¥420 for a ticket. The garden is quite a nice view. You also get to go inside the buildings and most of the signs have an English translation. Sadly the library doesn't come with English translations for the signs and it's not allowed to use a smartphone inside to translate them yourself.

Luna Amusement Park

Amusement park
Water & Amusement Parks
Luna Amusement Park is a historic theme park located in Japan, offering a nostalgic experience with its traditional rides like choo-choo trains, carousels, and merry-go-rounds. The park, established in 1954, has an old-timey charm and features brightly colored rides that cater to young kids. One of its highlights is the famous Rinkokaku, a historic state guest house situated on the edge of Maebashi Park.
This is a fun and affordable way to spend the day with your 6 year old or younger. It cost only ¥200 per person. I believe the park cap for attendance is 530 people so I recommend arriving early or registering online early. Anyway if you can’t do that stuff early then 3-4hrs after they open it is quite possible to get inside, just wait outside in line - most people leave early.

I'm giving this four stars not because it's a great amusement park, but because it's a fun place for young kids that costs less than lunch. It has a wonderful old timey feel to it. Even though most of the rides have a vintage quality, they have recently built a new maze. It was nice to see that they're adding new things to the park. They also recently added a 400 Yen all you can ride option, although it's probably a special to get people to come back after COVID. Without eating anything the park is good for about 2 hours. I'm glad to see that young children still enjoy amusement parks that would have entertained their grandparents as children.

Great for hanging out with kids during the weekend, affordable and nice snacks around, also has HALAL Kebab which is really great for Muslim customers. Pay 500yen at the machine and get 11 tickets to play with.

luna park was good... the adults are free of fare for the simple reason that they are an accompany of the kids with which is the main target of the amusement center. the rides were cheap, only ¥10 kids fare, adults no fare... it is a good place to kill time with your kids as they enjoyed the amusement rides. what i didn't like was the mask regulation. the amusement center is an open air park, and so, i think it unnecessary to put on the mask, besides, when i went here, there was no people other than me and my kids and the amusement park, and yet still, the staff had me to comply with their rules... i walked out, but leave the happenings of the center with my husband and kids... three hours later, when they returned to the car, everyone seems to have had a very good time.

Gunma Flower Park

Mentioned on

Nature & Parks
Gunma Flower Park is a stunning floral paradise featuring dahlias, roses, and seasonal plum and cherry trees. Visitors can also participate in floral-themed workshops. Conveniently located near the train station, it provides easy access to public transportation and popular attractions such as Takasaki Castle and Haruna Shrine. However, visitors with pollen allergies should come prepared during spring when the park is at its most beautiful. Despite this concern, the park offers a nice place with very good views for all visitors to enjoy.
This place is isn’t that crowded as compared to ashikaga flower park, which is widely well known. But it’s much be visited coz I feel here better actually than ashikaga one. Wide parking space, at a height so you can view the maebashi city 😉.
Rahul J — Google review
It is changing session then. But I felt that the park should have better maintenance standard - Japanese standard. I wonder it is sold to a foreign owner. The place is not well kept and expensive entrance fee. We went to the next Flower Park, which much impressive. Please go to Ashikaga Flower Park instead.
Kian L — Google review
Don't think it is worth going during winter as most of the flowers have withered except for those in the green house. 600yen per entry with 300yen voucher that can be redeemed for food or souvenirs.
Valerie T — Google review
We went on a rainy day during the week, so there was hardly anyone there. But it was beautiful. It's a little expensive for adults (700 yen+), but children are totally free so that makes up for it.
Hannah S — Google review
It is a large park, with a very large area. Too bad he's too careless. Admission costs only 600 ¥, cheap! when it is not flower season, it has no appeal.
AR P — Google review
I bought these beautiful flowers as a souvenir. There weren’t many flowers as I thought but they have a huge park that kids can enjoy.
Lyzel Q — Google review
Good place to spend 1/2 a day with the family, especially in the summer when the man-made river/showers are open for water play. My kids enjoyed climbing on the obstacles and running through the tunnels as well as getting lost in the scrub maze. The flower beds are always kept in great shape with something in full bloom almost every season. In winter the hot houses are a good place to warm up from the wind.
Hydi P — Google review
It was a very hot day so not a great time to visit - grounds were sweltering. Restaurant better than expected, flowers were fine but unremarkable. Play equipment less interesting than hoped for given other reviews.

The lunch and bath set is a fantastic deal. For ¥1100 you get a nice Japanese set meal and access to the bath. Food was plentiful and tasty. The bath, while not huge, is quite nice: especially the outdoor area. On Sundays, it seems the price goes up to ¥2100 for the buffet and bath set.

(Translated by Google) It seems that the business will be temporarily closed until March of next year, after which it will be rebuilt and reopened. Sunday lunch is a buffet for 1,600 yen, which is quite delicious and a good value. But you might have to make a reservation. And I might not do it for a while. A day trip to the hot springs costs 500 yen. The open-air bath had a nice atmosphere. But it was empty even though it was Sunday. I'm looking forward to the renewal. (Translated by Google) This was my first visit with Jalan reservations. Although it was a family trip and it was inexpensive, the food overall felt clean, and even though the prices of raw materials are rising these days, I feel like they put a lot of effort into making the food delicious. The elderly regular customers were also friendly and chatted with us, relieving us of the fatigue of our travels. It really became a good memory of my trip. It seems that it will be closed for a while due to renovations soon, but I felt the love of the people who work here and the people who use it often. Even though it's new, I'm sure it's a good inn, so I'd definitely like to come back. (Translated by Google) By chance, I found out that Sun Lake Kusagi was closing, so I headed there before it closed. It's a public lodging facility located in the mountains on the eastern shore of Lake Kusagi, halfway between Kiryu and Nikko, just off National Route 122. You can drive your own car and enjoy the scenery along the mountain stream, or you can take the bus on the Watetsu line! A bath with lunch included costs 1,100 yen. Is this their final treat? When I asked the front desk about the closure, they said thank you for 41 years of business. And as a bonus, I'm giving it a 5-star rating!!! The set menu consisted of three options: fillet cutlet set, fried chicken set, and dam curry. I chose the fillet cutlet. I was shown to a seat with a great view in the 50-seat restaurant area on the first floor. There were no other customers, so I had it all to myself. Music was playing, and the view outside was amazing. The set meal arrived shortly after. Three flat cutlets, a small salad with shredded cabbage, lettuce, and tomato. The miso soup had tofu and fried tofu, but it tasted and smelled strangely like nameko mushrooms, which weren't in it. A mystery? The rice was hard and a little dry. The main dish, the cutlet, had a nice crispy texture thanks to the fine breadcrumbs. It was a shame that the batter and meat kept peeling apart, with no cohesiveness! The meat quality was average? There was a good variety, with some fillet-like meat and some lean, fatty meat, so it was just okay! Even after I finished eating, no other customers came, and there were no employees around, so I was able to relax while looking around. As for the bath, a public bath set is a must. Taking the elevator down to B1, walking down the hallway and past the rest hall is the changing room. There's a vending machine and a cup-type water dispenser in the hall. Changing Room All coin-operated lockers are out of service! Store your smartphone and other belongings in the return safe, and keep your clothes in a traditional basket on the shelf. There are cotton swabs in the sink and two hair dryers. Indoor Seven open-air showers. No lever-operated showers! Three types of shampoo, conditioner, and body soap from unknown manufacturers. There's a dry sauna with a capacity of four people! Even the smallest electric wand-type is quite hot at 90°C! Breathing through your nose hurts if you don't do it slowly. The sauna bath is cold, but the water is the thickness of somen noodles and is virtually never replaced! It's not exactly clean. Is the indoor bath tap water? Or is it clear, colorless water? This bath, too, doesn't seem to be replaced, and the water is only circulated and current-driven, so it's not very clean. Outdoor Bath A rock bath (Kame-no-Yu) that can fit about 8 people. Several stone statues of turtles and rabbits surround it, welcoming visitors. The water flows constantly, but there's no outlet, so perhaps it's just circulating? It's so refreshing because you can enjoy a waterfall! There are no flying insects or fallen leaves in the bath, and the mountain scenery and air are just perfect (if only there wasn't pollen)! There's also a water dispenser outside, which is convenient. I wanted to lie down for a bit after getting out of the bath, but there was nowhere like that, so I had a drink and left, regretting the closure. It's sad to see this late Showa-era Western-style building go. Note: The hallway in the picture says "Kotodakara-no-Yu," a large bathhouse. But there was only "Kame-no-Yu," so what's the mystery behind this? (Translated by Google) The customers are really bad, but this place is really good. I stopped by for a day trip bath. 500 yen, JAF so it was 400 yen. Reasonable. Free WiFi, drinking water available, and although there isn't a very large rest room, there are chairs in the lobby, outside, and in front of the bath entrance, so you can take a break or wait for people. Laundry is reasonably priced although drying is weak. Hair dryer available, shampoo conditioner body soap available There is a small sauna, cold bath, bath, open-air bath, and space to rest outside. The staff were also very kind and courteous. However, I don't really care because I like to wash twice, but there is a lot of dirt floating around... I went in by scraping it out myself. The cause was the system and the customer base here. It seems that circulation is not the way to make it overflow, and although it is circulating, I wonder if the dirt on the surface will not wash away. The next fatal thing is the customers. Even though there was a sign at the entrance to the bathroom asking you to wash your body before entering, only one out of 14 people washed before entering. All the customers are around the age of uncles to grandfathers. I can enter without pouring hot water. Keep the hot water running. Take a cold bath without sweating in the sauna. Put the towel in the cold bath & bathtub and wring it out. Wash your body while standing. Leaving without wiping your body... It's such a waste since it's such a nice facility... I'll give it 5 stars because it was very comfortable when I reserved it twice. I think this is a place with the best value for money if customers are careful with each other. I wasn't able to eat it, but I would like to try the Sunday lunch buffet next time. On weekdays, it was 500 yen for adults, but if you are a JAF member and show your card, the price becomes 400 yen. There is an indoor bath, one cold bath, a sauna room (full for three people), and an open-air bath, so I was able to take a relaxing bath in a private room. Personally, I was very happy because the water bath was so expensive (probably around 20 degrees Celsius) that I don't see it at other hot spring facilities. I'm sure it varies from person to person, but both the indoor and outdoor baths felt just right, neither too hot nor too lukewarm. Considering the price of 400 yen, I was very satisfied overall. A handsome, athletic gymnast from Gunma got in an accident in like 1970. Now he’s a paraplegic who paints and writes poetry with the brush in his mouth. His name? Barack Obama. Just kidding. It’s Tomohiro. The museum is as visually impressive as the art, and there’s some short hiking around the museum leading down to a beautiful reservoir. 5 stars

Ryuzu Falls is a popular destination in Oku-Nikko, known for its stunning cascades and natural beauty. It's accessible via short hiking trails, making it an ideal spot for beginner hikers. The falls are part of a picturesque three-hour trail that passes through various natural landmarks, offering plenty of scenic views along the way. The area around the falls is split into two, resembling the head of a dragon, which gives Ryuzu its name.
I took the bus here from Nikko and sure glad I did! After walking around the lake for a bit, I started up the trail towards Mt. Nukazuka and if you have the time, I highly recommend staying on the trail. The forests had monkeys and the trail was fairly easy with plenty of scenic views along the way. It was a memorable day and a prefect day trip from Nikko!

Very stunning falls it far from the bus stop. We walked over to the lake as well - stunning too! Thought about renting the touristy Swan shaped boats but didn’t. Were sad we didn’t go further to see a beautiful shrine in the forest. We saw it on the bus as we continued up the mountain. Busy even during the off season. Many food vendors and food gift shops here also. It’s not remote or requires any hiking. It’s 10 minute walk from the bus to the falls. You can take the elevator down (still have 4 flights of stairs to get there and a few more flights of SRL takes at the viewing platform) for a small fee, stunning and beautiful. Selfie shots abound but people move away quickly. Was beautiful but not very relaxing. The lines for the bus down form early. Don’t be in a rush here.

I don’t think I am exaggerating when I say visiting waterfalls is one of my favorite things to do when travelling, especially in Japan. There’s something magical and poetic about these cascading waters. So, when I say this waterfall is one of the most rewarding gems of its kind, I really mean it. Getting off from the public bus at stop 37(竜頭淹), it is just 3 mins from the bottom of the waterfall with a magnificent view from the tea house. It’s so close you can smell the waterfall. Then go uphill from the right side of the tea house and you will find a 20-min well-paved staircase that take you up to various viewpoints to continue your journey to connect with the falls, particularly pleasant when seeing the water running through fall foliage. There are some crowds at times, as it is very accessible and some tour buses include this spot, nevertheless, it is not Tokyo type of busy and you will always be able to suimase your way to the railing for an epic photo. I felt like every turn was a scene worthy of National Geographic feature. Very beautiful. Highly recommended on a clear day in fall.

Visited Ryuzu Cascades around noon on a weekday. It was a bit crowded, with some school groups visiting, but still easy to enjoy. The cascades were beautiful, especially with the surrounding foliage adding rich color to the scene. The viewing area is well maintained, and the sound of the water flowing through the rocks makes it very peaceful. Despite the crowd, it’s a lovely and scenic stop, especially during the autumn season.

Favourite place in Nikko by far. Very quiet and beautiful surroundings. Be aware of the bears though, especially if hiking on your own! They are definitely out there, I’ve seen fresh poop multiple times

Extremely beautiful place to explore! It makes for a great day trip from Nikko, just take the bus up and back and you’re set. Easy hiking and good vibes make this a great way to spend the day!

Nice place for a good walk. There are few paths to scroll around. Mostly flat. We choose for the way end up on fall. Around 2 km walk one way from starting point. There is no public parking in front of starting point. Public parking is 400m far near the observation deck.

The Senjogahara Marshland hike was among the highlights of our trip. Highly worth it! We took the Yumoto Onsen-bound bus and began our hike at Yudaki Falls. You can also begin your hike at Akanuma as well (the same Yumoto Onsen bus stops here too). There have been sightings of bears, so I highly recommend purchasing a bear bell (you can get it from the shop opposite the Akanuma Bus Stop). I will definitely do this hike again - it was amazing! Entry is free and I recommend heading in around 7am-8am. The hike was around 2 to 3 hours. It is an easy hike.
Sukhbir C — Google review
Senjōgahara is a vast high-altitude marshland located about 1,400 m above sea level. It covers roughly 400 ha and was formed thousands of years ago when eruptions from Mount Nantai blocked the flow of the Yukawa River, gradually transforming an ancient lake into a wide peatland. The name Senjōgahara literally means “battlefield plain”, and it comes from a local legend telling that the gods of Mount Nantai and Mount Akagi once fought here over the possession of Lake Chūzenji. Today, however, this “battlefield” is one of the most peaceful landscapes in Nikko — an open plateau of grasses, streams, and mountain light. The area is known for its rich biodiversity — with more than 350 species of plants and many species of birds — and is protected under the Ramsar Convention as a wetland of international importance. Wooden boardwalks make it easy to explore without disturbing the ecosystem, and the landscape changes dramatically with each season. We walked the trail from Ryuzu Waterfall to Yumoto Onsen. The route passed through open plains framed by distant mountains, and the golden grasses shimmering in the sunlight made the whole scenery look almost surreal. Even in mid-October, many trees were still green, but the marsh itself glowed with warm autumn tones — a calm, quiet beauty.

The route mostly have wooden deck and the incline is easy. It's beginner friendly hike. For the route, it's better to get off at Yudaki and then hike to Akanuma.

I had a wonderful time hiking in Senjogahara, a beautiful marshland in Nikko National Park. The trails were well-maintained and easy to follow, and the scenery was stunning. I saw many kinds of plants and birds, and enjoyed the views of the mountains, falls and the river. The hike was not too strenuous, and I could finish it in about three hours. There were also some rest houses and toilets along the way. The best part was that I could access the trails by public transportation, taking a bus from Tobu Nikko Station to Yumoto Onsen( bus station number 44 or 46). I highly recommend this hike to anyone who loves nature and wants to experience a different side of Nikko.

Fukiware Falls

Mentioned on

Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Fukiware Falls is a picturesque waterfall measuring 7 meters high and 30 meters wide. It is accompanied by a suspension bridge that offers great views of the falls. The location charges Y1000 yen for parking, which can be used to purchase items from nearby shops such as apples or miso. There is also free parking available at the traffic light just south of the falls. This spot boasts breathtaking beauty throughout the year, with autumn being particularly impressive due to its vivid colors.
Spectacular and unique slot canyon falls, especially in the autumn foliage. The hiking loop was worth it (go anti-clockwise) and provided various views of the falls. Took about an hour to go around maybe 2-3 km.

Fukiware Falls is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a serene escape from urban life. Its dynamic beauty, coupled with accessible trails and nearby attractions, makes it a perfect day trip or weekend getaway. Whether you're capturing the misty cascades on camera or simply soaking in the tranquil ambiance, Fukiware Falls promises an unforgettable experience.

A set of stunning waterfalls! It's a bit out of the way, but it was definitely worth it; especially with 30°C weather. The water is very clear, and the walkway is literally next to thr waterfall. The only way to get closer is by falling in. Aside from the path right next to the waterfall, there's also a path along a pair of bridges, leading around to the other side of the river. Plenty of parking nearby as well, but all of it is paid parking; our parking spot was 500 yen.

The waterfall cuts through the rocks in a dramatic way, almost like the earth has split open. The walking trail around the gorge offers great views of the falls and the surrounding cliffs. It’s especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves change color. The area is clean and well maintained, and the staff at the visitor center are friendly. Definitely worth the trip if you enjoy nature and scenic walks. The only downside is that there’s a constant announcement to be careful around the falls, which is replayed in 3 languages every 2 minutes, which gets annoying. There’s a paid parking lot at the entrance for 500 yen, but if you drive a minute further, you’ll find free parking.
Bahareh — Google review
Visited Fukiware Falls on a weekday and found the walk to be quite nice, with pleasant scenery along the way. However, you can’t get a perfect view of the waterfall since there are restricted areas you’re not allowed to cross. There’s also a loud, repetitive announcement about safety warnings that takes away a bit from the natural atmosphere. Overall, it’s an interesting stop but a bit overhyped, especially if you’re expecting a quiet nature experience.

Fukiware Falls is about a 40–50 minute drive from Minakami. The falls are stunning, set within a picturesque gorge that gives the area a uniquely Japanese charm. It’s a peaceful spot where you can spend around 30 minutes just taking in the scenery and listening to the soothing sound of the water. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!

Very nice and unique falls in the nature. Around 15 minutes from Kawaba City. Also not too crowded. You also can do a round hike for around 30 minutes - 1 hour. You can park very closely for only 500 yen. No entry cost. So if you like nature and water, definitely recommended! Also around 2-3 hours from Tokyo.
Ryusei H — Google review
Nice walk around the impressive falls, rapids and whirlpools. The river has a strong current, and the geological formations were interesting to observe. There is a walking circuit, but it was partially closed, so we walked back and forth to the parking lot. There are no rails, so be careful when walking as the water and mist can make the rocks slippery.

Yudaki Falls is a stunning waterfall that originates from Lake Yunoko, dropping over 70 meters down the mountainside before flowing into the Yugawa River. Despite its icy appearance, its name actually means hot water waterfall in Japanese. The falls have an observatory platform that offers visitors a great view of its splendor.
amazing area, we got off the Tobu bus at the bottom of the falls where there is a beautiful view, we climbed the stairs to the top where there is a pond and bridge with hundreds of dragonflies, the surrounding area has a larger body of water where locals go fishing, we walked around and spotted wild monkies and deer, definitely my favourite place in Nikko. we visited in august so it was a much needed break from the tokyo heat.

Incredibly beautiful cascades! The entire region is gorgeous and makes for a great day trip from Nikko. You can take the bus or drive up to Lake Chuzenji and hike up here from there. It’s a very easy hike through very pretty woodlands and an old bog and marshland that you walk through via boardwalk. I recommend doing the hike up to really treat yourself here at these falls. Beautiful!

We visited here on 11-February-2024 during winter. It was amazing and surrounded by snow. Bridges and paths were covered by snow it was fun to play and walking on the snow. On the top the lake was frozen and water was falling from under the frozen lake. Anyone planning to visit Nikko you must come here in winter season. I believe it will be much spectacular in autumn and spring also. Overall I enjoyed this trip a lot. Maybe because I went with friends and also snow was radiating positive energy.

The hiking trail from Yudaki Falls to Ryuzu Falls was an Epppicccc hike! The walk was breathtakingly scenic with amazing autumn hues of green, red, gold and orange foliage dotting the landscape. For lunch you must try the fresh charcoal fish for lunch at Yudaki falls sold in the nearby kiosk - it is very “Ooishiiii”

Yudaki, literally “Hot Water Falls,” marks the dramatic outlet of Lake Yunoko and the uppermost point of the Yukawa River in Oku-Nikko. The waterfall drops about 70 meters over a 110-meter slope of smooth rock, creating a broad white cascade that looks almost like a flowing curtain. Its name comes from the nearby Yumoto Onsen, famous for its sulfuric hot springs — although the water in the falls itself isn’t hot, it carries the same mineral tint that gives it a slightly milky appearance. A wooden observation deck at the base offers an impressive, up-close view of the thundering flow, while a trail and staircase allow visitors to climb alongside the waterfall to its source at Lake Yunoko. The route continues north toward Senjōgahara Marshland, making it one of the most scenic starting points for hiking in Oku-Nikko. We visited in mid-October, when the leaves had just begun to turn. The surrounding forest was still mostly green, but hints of gold and crimson already framed the falls, adding warmth to the crisp mountain air.

Roadside Station Kawaba Den-en Plaza is a charming and serene rest stop that offers a delightful escape for travelers. Nestled in tranquil surroundings, it features a farmer's market brimming with fresh produce, various restaurants serving delicious local cuisine, and even a picturesque water feature complete with a bridge. This spot is particularly popular among locals and families looking to enjoy lunch together.
It’s a really nice area. We stopped on our first day for some lunch at a pasta place, had a good look around at the produce for sale and let the kids loose at the play park there, they loved the hill slide! We decided we’d come back the next day to take produce home. We got plenty of beautiful fruit and veg, fruit syrups, cheese, bread, smoked meat and craft beers. The kids wanted to hit the play park again but also there were some entertainers by the pond so we could all sit, eat some cheese etc and relax. There are also some walking trails behind it. We will come back for sure.

Interesting stop, albeit not exactly ‘en route’ so please take note even though there’s ’roadside’ in the name :) It was a detour for us to take our lunch stop here. The overall experience had good vibes, we liked the atmosphere. Didn’t get the chance to really walk around as we needed to get back into the highway for our journey. Even so we enjoyed our soba lunch very much before hitting the road again. And we dropped in the Farmers Market as well to get some strawberries and fresh juices. Recommend stopping by here if time permits and if you are on a drive trip in Japan .

【賑わいの中でひと休み:癒しの道の駅体験】 A vibrant pit stop nestled in the heart of Gunma, Michinoeki Denen Plaza is more than just a roadside station—it’s a community gathering point that hums with life. We dropped by on our way back to Tokyo and found it the perfect place to stretch our legs and soak in a bit of local charm. What struck us immediately was the popularity—by the time we parked in Area 7, spaces were already filling fast. Still, the atmosphere was welcoming, with families, couples, and travelers (furry companions included) meandering through the grounds. The locally produced nomu yogurt was a revelation: creamy, tart, and just the right size at 160 yen. A perfect breakfast companion. The market had an impressive array of fresh local produce, ideal for souvenirs or just a snack for the road. Benches placed thoughtfully in the plaza gave us space to unwind while our dog relaxed by our feet. Clean toilets, cheerful entertainers performing on the lawn, and play areas for kids all added to the feeling of a lively but well-kept village fair. If there’s any gentle critique, it’s that the popularity comes at the price of peace—it was only after we left for a quieter lunch nearby that we realized how noisy it had been. Still, it’s a spot I’ve saved for future visits. ⸻ 【Features】 🚘 Parking: Multiple lots available 🐶 Pets allowed - Outdoor only 🚻 Toilet inside the establishment 💰 Payment: ✅Cash and Credit Card 🔙 Would I visit again? 💓Definitely

Soserene, so quiet, so un-touristy. Sounds of birds chirping and a pair of geese honking. Gentle breeze and plenty of outdoor seatfor a packed lunch while you look beyond and soak in the scenery. Stores sell some nice local produce like veggies ,honey, cheese and sake. Prices are a bit on the high side, in my opinion, and i wasn't very impressed with the ball mozarella cheese (too hard, not enough milky taste). Overall, a wonderful place to visit. Oh, i forget to mention there's a fishing area a short distance away where I watched people fish in all kinds of manner and it was very very educational and fun to see some catch a fish every 3 minutes whilst others sat and looked enviously with nothing at the end of their rods 😆

Biggest and best roadside station I've ever been to (of about 50). Its more like a food theme park or resort than a roadside station. There are 7 car parks, several eateries, a farmers market, a rest area, outdoor and indoor seating, a nursery, toilets, smoking areas, and a brilliant free play area. Its a very popular spot particularly on weekends, so there are often queues.

Yuno Lake is a stunning body of water known for its crystal-clear blue waters and vibrant autumn foliage. Situated near the Senjogahara plateau, this hot spring-fed lake was formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. At an elevation of nearly 1,500 meters, the area can be chilly and breezy, making it a refreshing escape. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the 1.9-mile shoreline or capture breathtaking sunset views over the tranquil waters.
An exceptional destination, especially in the fall. We started our day with an early morning walk along the lake, beginning at the Kamenoi Hotel and heading counterclockwise. The woodland trails, full of moss and surrounded by birdsong, were breathtaking. We were delighted to encounter deer and monkeys on the trail, which was an unexpected and fun experience! As the mist lifted from the lake, it revealed a stunning, serene landscape—truly a core memory for us.

During my visit to Nikko on year end, I have been to this Lake as well. One of the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. At that time it was frozen and was able to walk over it. Place was so silent that if you throw any stone you can hear clear sound of it and stone can go far away due to ice. Nearby there was a nice restaurant and enjoyed local food there. In summer, for hiking also this lake is good place. Must go!!!

Skunk cabbage is among the notable plant species found in this marshland, and autumn presents an excellent opportunity to witness foliage transformation.
Visited in mid July. The weather was great in the morning. Temperature quite high, refreshing breeze in the mountain trail with lot’s of trees but not cold. The hike was fun, trail is not difficult, beginner level. Depending how far you want to go, running/walking shoes are okay. Be careful of slippery wood pathway when wet. Bring your water and snacks, the rest area’s foods & drinks are slightly expensive but still acceptable, good portion & okay taste. In the afternoon it rained a lot! It was pouring hard, luckily we were back to the starting point just in time. Apparently, weather can change drastically in mountain so it is good to be prepared for sudden rain. Very fun. Would like to come back in different seasons.

Walkway across Ozegahara in Oze National Park, Japan, Ozegahara, a sprawling area of marshes and moorland, is the green heart of Oze National Park. This large nature reserve spreads out over four prefectures in central Japan, and the Oze marshland in Gunma Prefecture is shadowed by Mount Shibutsu, seen in our image. Also featured are some of the park's sinuous wooden walkways stretching across waterlogged terrain. There are miles of these boardwalks, allowing for easy trekking around the park. They also shield much of the delicate ecosystem from too much foot-traffic—basically, they keep feet dry and plants untrammeled. The high-altitude park is home to a number of beautiful alpine flowers, including the Asian skunk cabbage, which blooms after the last snows melt, and is much prettier than its name might suggest.

The view from Shibayasu Dake was the ultimate reward. The weather was great, and it was a pleasant hike. I took a spectacular fall once. I was completely covered in mud. Be careful of rotten trees, logs, and mud. Next time, I'll try a different route. I'll come again. (Translated by Google) After climbing Kyushu's 100 Famous Mountains, I decided to tackle the west side. For now, when I have a long vacation, I'll climb Japan's 100 Famous Mountains. On other weekends, I'd like to climb either the Chugoku 100 Famous Mountains or the Chugoku 100 Famous Mountains! (By the time I'm 55, I'll do it.) But bears are scary, though. I planned to use my paid leave during the September and October long weekends to climb Japan's 100 Famous Mountains in Gunma, but work was busy in September, so I gave up. I took extra paid leave during the October long weekend. 💦I didn't explain the details to my coworkers. 💦 I mean, it was my paid leave, and I did my job well, so I wasn't bothering anyone. Day 1: Traveled to Moji, arriving in the evening to board the train. Take the prestigious Taiyo Ferry from Moji to Osaka Minami (5:00 PM to 5:30 AM). Day 2: Arrive Osaka Minami and head on the highway. Conquer the corporate museums in Kyoto that I hadn't been able to visit yet. Omron Communication Plaza, Shimadzu Corporation Foundation Memorial Museum, Inamori Library After that, I traveled to my lodgings in Oigami Onsen, Gunma Prefecture (it took 8 hours 💦). Two days ago: Mount Nantai, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains Day 3: Mount Shibutsu, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains Day 4: Mount Aizu-Komagatake, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains Day 5: Mount Hiuchigatake, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains, from Osaka South to Moji by Meimon Taiyo Ferry (5:00 PM to 5:30 AM) Day 6: I changed into a suit before getting off the ferry, parked in a parking lot near the office, and planned to be at work before 8:00 AM (lol). I could have stopped by home, but it would have been just before work time, and taking the morning off would have meant too much time off. I could have worked remotely, but it would have been heartbreaking (I didn't do anything wrong, lol). ~ Comments on Mt. Hiuchigatake ~ 20251012 Summit I left the guesthouse at 6:30 and arrived at the Oike parking lot at 7:15. The parking lot was only about half full. I made a round trip from the Oike parking lot to Mt. Hiuchigatake, finishing at 4:20. Today, unlike the other day, the weather was sunny, which was nice. I started climbing at 7:30. The trail was soggy from the previous day's rain. Furthermore, the boardwalk had corroded, creating a seesaw effect, causing water to splash on me. The foundations were also worn, causing the boardwalk to tilt horizontally and vertically. I was worried about slipping, so my pace slowly slowed. (On the way back, unlike on the way there, I was careless and almost fell on the slanted boardwalk.) I thought the trail might be quiet because of the steep elevation changes and the difficulty of the stone mountain. But the number of climbers started to increase toward the end of the trail. As mentioned earlier, the trail was difficult, and there were many groups, so traffic jams occurred. 🤬🤬🤬 As a result, I had to push through a lot of obstacles on the way up (sorry). However, there were wetlands here and there, and I thought, "Ozegahara is nearby, after all," and I was glad I came all the way from Fukuoka. The guided tour from the 7th to 9th stations suddenly sped up. When I reached the summit of Mt. Manakita and saw Mt. Hiuchigatake, I didn't want to go up all those ups and downs, but it turned out to be surprisingly easy. Personally, I think you should do both. Thanks to this, I was able to see Ozegahara and Lake Ozenuma, which I missed yesterday due to the rain, and I was very happy. On the way back, there were many climbers I had overtaken around the summit of Mt. Manatake, so I didn't get caught in traffic, but the difficult trail made it difficult to pick up speed. On a sunny day in the middle of a three-day weekend, I met over 50 groups of climbers, and there were many cars with license plates from other prefectures, so I realized this mountain is extremely popular. By the way, even though I met so many climbers, I didn't meet any Yamappu users. 💦 Maybe it's because I'm not treating them well because it's been three days in a row. P.S. I will be taking a break from climbing Japan's 100 Famous Mountains this year until next year due to the winter mountains and the distance. (Translated by Google) Dentagokura Dam is a dam built on the Tadami River, a class I river, in the Agano River system, in Oaza Tagokura, Tadami Town, Minamiaizu District, Fukushima Prefecture. This power generation dam is managed by Gen Kaihatsu Co., Ltd., and is a gravity-type concrete dam with a height of 145.0 m. Along with the Okutadami Dam located upstream, it is known as one of the largest dams in Japan. Additionally, the Tagokura Power Plant attached to the dam has a licensed output of 400,000 kW, making it the second largest general hydropower plant in Japan after the Okutadami Power Plant. The dam lake was named Lake Tagokura and was selected by Tadami Town in 2005 as one of the ``100 Best Dam Lakes'' by the Dam Water Source Environmental Improvement Center (currently a general incorporated foundation). It has been designated as Echigo Sanzan Tadami Quasi-National Park. Please refer to the Tadami Specific Area Comprehensive Development Plan for the history of power development projects throughout the Tadami River. The Tadami River is a rapid-flowing river that has one of the heaviest snowfall areas in Japan, and most of its flow path is made up of ravines. Since the river has the perfect conditions for hydroelectric power generation, many power source development plans have been considered since the Meiji period. A full-scale development plan was put in place due to the ``Third Hydropower Survey'' conducted by the Ministry of Communications starting in 1937 (Showa 12). At the same time, the movement toward state control of electric power was gaining strength, and Japan Power Transmission Power Co., Ltd. (Nippon Power Co., Ltd.), which was established in 1939 (Showa 14), began developing power sources along the Tadami River. In 1947 (Showa 22), immediately after the end of the Pacific War, the Nippon Tohoku branch devised a plan to construct a dam-type power plant in steps along the Tadami River, from the water source, Ozenuma, to the confluence of the Agano River. It was announced as ``Summary of Tadami River Suji Hydropower Development Plan''. Large dams were built at Oze, Ginzandaira, and Tagokura points as the core of the project, and a total of 23 dam-type power plants were built on the Tadami River, Agano River, Inami River, and Otsugi River. It was a grand plan in which the Tadami River would supply 25% of the potential hydropower of the entire Tohoku region, with a total output of 2,400,000 kW. For this reason, Tagokura Dam was planned to be constructed along with Okutadami Dam as a core power generation facility for the Tadami River. However, opinions were divided even within Nippon regarding the development of the Tadami River. The plan for the Tohoku branch was to develop the Tadami River all together, but the Kanto branch, using its water rights to Ozenuma as a shield, planned to generate pumped storage power using the Ozehara Dam and divert water from the Tadami River to the Tone River. (Oze water diversion plan), and was in conflict with the Tohoku branch office, which opposed it. Furthermore, the situation became even more confusing when Niigata Prefecture announced at the same time a plan to divert water to the Shinano River (the Tadami River diversion plan). Furthermore, in 1950 (Showa 25), Nippon was split up and privatized to create the Nine Electric Power Company. Nippon Tohoku Branch was reorganized and established as Tohoku Electric Power Company, and Kanto Branch Office was reorganized and established as Tokyo Electric Power Company, and as they became separate companies, conflicts of interest became even more acute. The following year, the situation completely reached a deadlock when the Electric Power Development Company was established and entered into the Tadami River power development project. Around this time, the Comprehensive National Land Development Law was enacted in 1952, and 22 regions across the country were selected as target areas for ``Specific Regional Comprehensive Development Plans'' with the aim of regional revitalization through large-scale comprehensive development. Among these, the Tadami River was also designated as part of the Tadami Specific Regional Comprehensive Development Plan, calling for powerful and unified power source development, and prompt start of development was requested. The government established the ``Power Development Coordination Council'' to resolve the situation. They made adjustments to how the large-scale Tadami River power development plan, including water rights, would be divided among the companies. As a result, in July 1953, the outline of the Tadami River power source development, which continued to be adjusted, was finalized. The contents of the project basically followed the outline of the Tadami River Suji Hydropower Development Plan promoted by Tohoku Electric Power Company, and included the diversion of some water to Niigata. In addition, regarding the division of dam projects, in addition to Tagokura and Okutadami, Power Development will be responsible for the Maezawa Dam (later Otori Dam) and Taki Dam, as well as the hydroelectric power generation facilities along the Niigata diversion plan, and the Tadami River downstream of Honmei Dam. The agreement was reached that Tohoku Electric Power Co. would share the work on the Agano River dam. TEPCO's Oze water diversion plan was not reflected in the plan due to strong opposition from water rights holders Fukushima and Niigata prefectures and environmental concerns, and after a long delay, the project itself was canceled in 1996. It has been cancelled.
