Deserts
The White Desert of Kutch is a popular tourist destination in India, known for its vast expanse of white salt desert that becomes visible after monsoon season. The area is particularly popular during sunrise and sunset. Despite its remote location, the desert attracts thousands of domestic tourists every day during peak season. Despite the crowds, the magnanimous size of the desert makes it a soothing and beautiful experience. The cool weather in November only adds to its allure.
A truly mesmerizing and one-of-a-kind experience! The vast expanse of the white salt desert under the open sky is breathtaking, especially during sunset and full moon nights. The Rann Utsav adds vibrant cultural charm with music, food, and crafts. A must-visit for nature lovers and those seeking unique landscapes.
Yogi V — Google review
The Rann of Kutch, located in Gujarat, India, is one of the world’s largest salt deserts. Famous for its breathtaking white landscapes, it transforms into a cultural wonderland during the annual Rann Utsav, showcasing Gujarati art, music, dance, and cuisine. Visitors can enjoy stunning sunsets, moonlit nights over the white sands, and the warm hospitality of local villages. A must-visit destination for nature lovers, photographers, and culture enthusiasts alike.
Ashish D — Google review
A surreal place that hits you the moment you step onto that endless white stretch 🤍✨ The silence, the breeze, and that shimmering glow under the sun make it feel like you’ve landed somewhere completely unreal — one of the rarest landscapes you’ll ever get to experience. The best time to visit is definitely during winters — Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan and early Feb ❄️ That’s when the weather stays pleasant and the salt flats look their absolute best. These months also happen to be the peak season, so expect more crowds, higher demand for stays, and busy evenings, especially during festivals and long weekends. Facilities in and around the area are quite good — clean pathways, viewing points, rest areas, and plenty of options for food, stay, and shopping 🛖🌙 Everything is organised well enough for families, groups, and even solo travellers. Overall, it’s a magical experience — a place that feels peaceful, vast, and unforgettable, and something you should visit at least once in your lifetime ❤️🤍✨
Bhadra M — Google review
The place is beautiful, however due to rains, there is still water and uou can't see the white Rann of salt yet. Nevertheless, beautiful view during full moonlight
Sachiien A — Google review
We visited on 25th Nov 2025. Full of water.. no white dessert due to late monsoon itseems. Not sure why the govt still charging 140rs for each person. 10rs is also a waste. There is work going on still. Plan your visit accordingly
Sindhuja R — Google review
Way better than jaisalmer, please visit White run. You can enjoy plus knowledge and also remembered till death, mesmerising view and also very knowledgeable for astrologers.
CHIRAG R — Google review
We visit here nov 25 last week. There is no white sand for us due to water. Maybe in Dec it's is good time to visit.
Yogesh P — Google review
The endless stretch of white salt under the open sky is surreal and mesmerizing. Whether you visit during sunrise, sunset, or on a full moon night, the desert glows with a beauty that words can’t fully capture. I visited during the Rann Utsav, and the whole setup was vibrant, cultural programs, handicrafts, local food, camel rides, and traditional Kutchi music made it a complete cultural experience. The tent city is well-organized and gives you a mix of luxury and authenticity. If you're a nature lover, photographer, or just someone seeking a peaceful yet unforgettable trip, this place is a must-visit. The Rann of Kutch stays in your heart long after you’ve left.

Hill garden suppose to be a public attraction but this place is not maintained properly. This place have stuff inside but the operation and maintenance are not there. The garden is at height and if maintained properly would be a amazing place to hang on. But in current situation this place is not my pick as a visitor.

Chhatardi Bhuj

Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
Ancient Ruins
Chhatardi Bhuj is a captivating historical site nestled near Hamirsar Lake in the Kutch district of Gujarat, India. This remarkable complex features cenotaphs dedicated to the royal family of Bhuj, constructed in the 18th century under the reign of Rao Lakhpatji. The term "Chhatedi" translates to umbrella-shaped canopy, aptly describing the unique dome-like structures that grace each memorial.
Was tough finding entry to the place but since I was walking, I was able to find the entry. Entry is really small gate and there is no entry fee. Not very crowded (which is weird coz it's beautiful). Properly shows the history. The ruins are very beautiful and pictures. Must visit for sure. Just avoid going in summer and carry water while going.

This place no entry ticket this side has bad structure and not protected vell but nice to see. This structure Build in 18th century.
Kamal C — Google review
Tucked away in the historic town of Bhuj, Chhatardi is a hidden architectural treasure that offers a quiet yet captivating glimpse into Kutch's royal past. Often overshadowed by more commercial tourist spots, Chhatardi is a must-visit for those who appreciate history, architecture, and solitude. 🏛️ What is Chhatardi? Chhatardi refers to a collection of royal cenotaphs (memorial structures) built in the 18th and 19th centuries to honor the deceased rulers of Kutch’s Jadeja dynasty. These sandstone structures are intricately carved and set amidst a peaceful open ground, evoking a sense of forgotten grandeur. Though many were damaged during the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, the ruins still retain a haunting beauty, and some structures stand impressively intact. 🎨 Architecture & Atmosphere The cenotaphs blend Rajputana and local Kutchi architectural styles, with beautifully carved pillars, domes, and floral motifs. The artistry is detailed and elegant, with some chhatris (umbrellas) housing marble statues of the royals they commemorate. The site is especially photogenic during sunrise or sunset, when the golden light casts long shadows and highlights the texture of the aged sandstone. 🌿 Surroundings Chhatardi is surrounded by a somewhat unkempt but naturally charming landscape. Unlike heavily commercialized monuments, it remains peaceful, uncrowded, and serene—perfect for photographers, history lovers, and those seeking solitude. You may encounter locals relaxing or children playing nearby, adding a touch of life to the otherwise somber setting. ✅ Pros Rich historical and architectural value Ideal for photography and quiet reflection Free entry and easy access from Bhuj town Great spot for offbeat travelers ❌ Cons Poorly maintained in some areas Limited information or signage on-site No guides or tourist facilities Vulnerable to further damage without preservation efforts 🔍 Insider Tips: Visit during early morning or late afternoon for the best light. Bring your own water/snacks; there are no amenities on-site. Hire a local guide from Bhuj if you want detailed history, as the site lacks explanation boards. 📍 Location: Just a few kilometers from the Bhuj city center – easily reachable by auto-rickshaw or local transport. 🧭 Final Thoughts: Chhatardi, Bhuj is more than just a photo spot — it's a quiet witness to Kutch’s royal legacy, waiting to be rediscovered. While it deserves better conservation, its raw and unpolished state adds to its timeless charm. If you’re in Bhuj and want to explore beyond the typical tourist path, Chhatardi is worth your time.

Situated amidst the rich historical backdrop of Bhuj, this place is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and casual travelers alike. Stepping into Chatardi felt like taking a journey back in time. Exploring the site, we were captivated by the stories of ancient rulers and the cultural heritage they left behind. From its historical significance to its serene ambiance. Don't miss out on this hidden gem during your visit to Bhuj!
Vrutik C — Google review
First of all, it's difficult to find an entry gate to this place. For convenience I have attached two photos of entry and a nearby sign board of a society to identify the entrance. It's a good place to see once, not maintained much, but can enjoy nice structure of that time. You can take as much photographs you want. As there was no guide available, we were not sure of history. Should see notes available on Google and wikipedia.

Beautiful palace with a few peacocks, a variety of flowers and a peaceful environment. Do book their homestay Incase you haven't booked stay. It was a 5 star stay with great food, camp fire, clean rooms and compassionate people around.
Mohit S — Google review
The entire palace grounds are quite serene and peaceful. They're also well maintained and clean. The various ruins add a layer of mystery to the mood of the place. The central building was ruined during the last Bhuj earthquake but one can still sense the grandeur and beauty. Our walk in the morning through the property was an amazing experience with all the birds, cool breeze, greenery everywhere, and the freshness of the air. There's enough parking space, in case you are driving to this place and we saw many people come in by tuktuk and rickshaw. There's a small entry fee for the museum, which displays a lot of interesting items from the collection of the last king of Kutch.

Harmirsar Lake

Lake
Nature & Parks
Bodies of Water
Harmirsar Lake, located in the western end of Kutch, Gujarat, is a 28-acre reservoir created in the 16th century. It serves as an oasis in the hot and dry summers of Bhuj. The lake was built by kings to meet the domestic water needs of the town's people and was well developed with channels and tunnels that brought water from three rivers to fill the town's reservoirs.
The ruler of the Jadeja clan Rao Hamir (1472- 1524) was also the founder of the historical town of Bhuj. He was also the person on whose name the famous Hamirsar Lake was named after his descendant Rao Khengarji II (who also began the Jadeja rule in Kutch) got the lake built. Incidentally the Jadeja community was believed to be the descendants of Lord Krishna. Hamirsar Lake was envisioned as an oasis of peace and tranquility in the hot saline desert of the Rann of Kutch. Khengarji II commissioned several canals and tunnels so that water from 3 river tributaries could be gathered together to pump water into the lake. The town of Bhuj was also supplied water from these water systems. Subsequently the town of Bhuj was also named as the capital of the kingdom of Khengarji II.

Hamirsar lake Bhuj: Hamirsar Lake is the heart of Bhuj town and located in the western end of Kutch, Gujarat. Bhuj is known for hot and dry summers. This lake is considered an oasis between saline and arid Kutch. The kings built the lake to fulfil the domestic needs of people of Bhuj in ancient times. Hamirsar Lake was well developed with a channel and tunnels that used to carry water from three rivers to fill the town's water reservoirs. But after the earthquake of 2001 in Bhuj, this water system was gravely disturbed distorted. The municipality and people of Bhuj took initiatives to revive the water system to its original form to fulfil the needs of its people once again. This was achieved in 2003. The water of Hamirsar Lake became potable. This manmade lake was named after Rao Hamir, a Jadega ruler who ruled around 450 years ago. Rao Hamir is considered the father of Rao Khengarji, the founder of Jadeja dynasty in Kutch. A similar marvel between the saline and Kutch, Hamirsar lake is a synthetic lake based on the name of Hamir Rao, a Jadeja ruler who governed around 450 years prior. Exclusively made for individuals of Kutch for extinguishing the homegrown requirements, presently Hamirsar Lake is a delight living in Kutch as a vacation destination. Jadeja were unmistakable leaders of Kutch, and Hamirsar was the dad of Rao Khengarji, and the author if this Jadeja People group. Carrying out beneficial things to individuals of Kutch, the Hamirsar Lake was worked with this perspective as it would be a source to the homegrown necessities of individuals, The summers of Kutch are warm and seething, with the bone-dry space of Kutch, it's not really intense to track down any beneficial developing, and Hamirsar Lake around then was the principle source as it was a desert spring of greenery with the Rann's bone-dry and saline ground. A few trenches and passages were understood from 3 feeders to produce water gulf into this artificial channel. Since that time, supply of water asset got more worthwhile with this lake, making Bhuj as capital of Realm of Khengarji II. A phenomenal spot to chill on a warm evening, Hamirsar Lake is the place where individuals go to swim, or sit under a tree and appreciate the water, just as where numerous ladies do their clothing. Strolling along the lake's edge is an extraordinary method to get starting with one spot then onto the next, with the Aina Mahal and Praga Mahal, the Kutch Exhibition hall, the Ramkund Stepwell and Slam Dhun Sanctuary, the Swaminarayan Sanctuary and the Alfred Secondary School all found near the eastern side of the lake; a stroll from the Aina Mahal to the Swaminarayan Sanctuary (passing the wide range of various destinations referenced) requires about thirty minutes. Further around the opposite side of the lake is the Sharad Baug royal residence, and the way to the imperial chhatardis. The lake is spread over a space of 28 sections of land and has a lovely nursery in the center. The nursery was before called as Green Island, presently has been renamed as Rajendra Park. Hamirsar Lake is the most loved cookout spot for individuals of Bhuj where one can appreciate and unwind under the shade of trees. It is likewise an ideal spot for evening and morning strolls. ina Mahal, Prag Mahal, Kutch Historical center, Smash kund Step well, Swaminarayan Sanctuary, Sharad Baug Royal residence and Imperial Chhatardis while strolling on the lakeside. Guests can likewise spot numerous transient birds in the lake during winters. Augun of Hamirsar is an extraordinary celebration celebrated in Bhuj when the lake floods in rainstorm. This celebration has been followed since the hours of old rulers. The Ruler around then would play out a Puja when the lake flooded and desserts were circulated as prasad to individuals of Kutch. I visited this HAMIRSAR lake every time and spent some quality time when i am in Bhuj. This lake is a heart of the city and people gathering everyday in the morning and evening. Sunset is the best time to see the beauty of lake. When this lake rise in the rainy season local people as well as government authorities pray and have pooja at lakeside. Much need some beautification project around the lake to enhance the lake.

"The Kutch Museum is a hidden gem for anyone interested in the rich history and culture of the Kutch region. The collection is impressive—ranging from ancient artifacts, traditional textiles, and tribal crafts to coins, sculptures, and musical instruments. The section on the Kutchi script and local communities was especially fascinating. The building itself is a beautiful piece of colonial-era architecture, adding to the experience. It's a peaceful, informative place and a must-visit for history and culture lovers. Just make sure to check the timings before you go, as they can vary."

A compact, well-laid out local history museum right opposite Hamirsar Lake — easy to spot and walkable from central Bhuj. 📍 Founded in 1877, it’s actually the oldest museum in Gujarat and houses a wide range of regional artefacts — coins, inscriptions, tribal textiles and traditional crafts. 🏺 Visitor practicals: typical opening hours are around 10:00–13:00 and 14:30–17:30; it’s usually closed on Wednesdays and some public holidays, so plan accordingly. 🕰️ Entry is very inexpensive for locals (small nominal fee) and higher for foreigners; there may be a separate camera/photography charge — keep some cash handy. 💸📸 Displays are informative rather than flashy — great if you want a focused, quiet look at Kutch’s history and tribal art. Expect a 30–60 minute visit unless you’re into details. 🧭🏺

Straightforward Review – One-Time Visit Only This is an old office, probably built during a king’s era. Inside, they’ve kept a few items—portraits from the royal period, some stones, coins, swords, and basic displays across the ground and first floor. Honestly, there isn’t much to see. The entry fee is just ₹5, so for a one-time visit, it’s fine. A small but important point: the security staff here are women, and while security is necessary, security and politeness are not enemies. Being respectful doesn’t reduce safety. A bit of politeness from their side would make the experience much better for visitors. Overall, nothing great, nothing terrible—just a basic place you can see once because the entry fee is minimal.

Fantastic place to learn about the rich and varied history of Rann of Kutch. The entire place is superbly curated and maintained. The staff is warm, kind and courteous. We loved our history lessons here filled with artefacts from the years gone by.a must visit place for every history lover. 100% recommended.

It was founded by Maharao Khengarji in the year 1877. The museum consists of the region’s delightful diversity in craft and local living with inscriptions of Kshatrapa back to the one A.D. along with coines [Kori- A kutch local currency] as well as scripts [Having gujarati alphabets]. Other than that, there's an anthropological section, archaeological section, textiles section, weapons section, music instruments section, shipping section, and stuffed animals section. More particularly, there's a section devoted to the tribal community where one can see ancient artifacts, folk arts, and crafts and information about tribal people, who are a major part of Kutch's history and culture. Visiting Hours for tourists: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM & 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM, Closed on Wednesday and Public Holidays. Having ticket charges of Rs 5/- . Parking is somewhat difficult to get in nearby areas.

I visited Prag Mahal today with my family, and it was an incredible experience. This stunning 19th-century palace, built in an Italian-Gothic architectural style, stands as a testament to Bhuj’s rich history. The intricate carvings, grand chandeliers, and the towering clock tower offer a glimpse into the opulence of the bygone era. The highlight was the beautiful Durbar Hall, which still exudes royal charm. Prag Mahal was commissioned by Maharaja Pragmalji II in 1865 and designed by Colonel Henry Saint Wilkins, a British architect. The palace is primarily built with sandstone and features impressive European influences, making it unique among Indian palaces. Though it suffered damage during the 2001 earthquake, restoration efforts have preserved its grandeur. From the top of the clock tower, the panoramic view of Bhuj is breathtaking. It’s a must-visit place for history lovers and those who appreciate architectural beauty. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Bhuj!

Nestled in the heart of Kutch, Aaina Mahal, or the Palace of Mirrors, is a stunning 18th-century palace that showcases an exquisite blend of art and architecture. Constructed under the reign of Rao Lakhpatji in 1752, this opulent structure boasts intricate mirror work and lavish decorations featuring precious stones and elaborate chandeliers. The palace's interior dazzles with its Hall of Mirrors, where reflections create a mesmerizing visual experience.
Despite the extensive damage caused by the Kutch earthquake, the Aina Palace is a living symbol of Bhuj's identity and its wonderful art. Built during the time of Maharaja Lakhpatji, this palace is truly unforgettable. Amazing Mirror Work: The name of the palace itself is 'Aina' and its main attraction is its main hall, which is studded with mirrors. As soon as you enter the room, it feels like you see your reflection in hundreds of mirrors, which creates a magical scene. The design and craftsmanship of this room is such that at night, when you light a lamp, the entire room is illuminated. Influence of European Art: This palace has been built by the craftsmen of Kutch adopting the European style. Here you will find Dutch clocks, glass brought from Venice, and old remnants of electrical systems, which show the international connections of the kings of Kutch. Current Experience: A part of the palace was damaged after the earthquake, but the beauty of the part that is open is as captivating as ever. My Experience: A visit to this palace will give you a glimpse of Kutch's rich past. The glitter of the mirrors and the collection of royal objects is amazing. It is nice to sit here in peace and think about the hard work of the artists at one time. Tip: Don't miss the Prague Palace, located right next to the Iina Palace, which is a magnificent example of Italian style. Allocate at least 2-3 hours to see both the palaces together.

"This is a heritage building and it needs to be maintained. We could only see a few rooms and articles, but we wanted to explore more. Unfortunately, the condition of the building was very poor… the Queen’s palace (Rani Mahal) was almost completely in ruins. Aaina Mahal is a unique heritage spot with beautiful glasswork and a rich glimpse of Kutch’s royal history. The architecture is impressive, but a few areas could be better maintained and brighter for viewing the details. Overall, it’s worth a quick visit, and with improved upkeep it can be an even better experience.

A stunning old palace in Bhuj filled with mirrors, intricate artwork and beautiful detailing. The moment you step inside, the vintage charm hits you — it truly feels like stepping back in time 🏛️✨. The halls are decorated with reflective walls, delicate carvings and royal-era displays that are maintained quite well. Each corner has something eye-catching, making it great for photography 📸🌟. The small museum sections give a decent glimpse into the region’s history and artistry. The layout is simple to follow and the staff guides you politely whenever needed 🎧📝. Outside areas are peaceful too, with enough space to walk around and admire the architecture. Ticketing is quick, and the place stays reasonably clean despite the footfall 🌤️🪟. A lovely heritage spot in Bhuj that’s perfect for anyone who enjoys old-world craftsmanship and quiet cultural spaces 🧿✨.

It's a great place to visit and I would you say, you must visit this place if you're traveling in Bhuj. This place shows our historical stories by different different 3D modal, statutes. The sound quality is great, and it gives goosebumps, hearing the historical stories. They have special night light shows. The best things to see is this night light show, which will held around 8:00 PM. Unfortunately, I couldn't attend but one should definitely attend the night light show. The guides and staffs are nice and provides all the knowledge about the place. This place is clean and atmosphere is amazing here. You need to get ticket for entry, they've two different tickets. One for garden and outside view, which includes tents and shops in which you can see and purchase handcrafted items. And another ticket includes entry inside bhavan and you can see shows, and our historical stories and statutes of Bharat Mata holding 4 lions. Mobile Phones, Cameras, water bottles, and other things are not allowed inside. You can only carry Purse with you when visiting Bhavan. They provide free service to carry your valuable items such as cameras and phones. Also you'll be given shoes socks and you've to wear shoe shocks inorder to maintain hygiene and cleanliness, which is great. This is very unique thing I've noticed, I've never seen this before. Also you can find a canteen inside, if you're planning to spend whole day or if you're hungry. Canteen has everything you need such as Gujarati dish, Punjabi Dish, and other things.

You should not forget to visit Bhujodi Craft Park while you’re in Bhuj. Not too far from the city, the Vande Mataram Craft Park is simply amazing. In my opinion, it’s one of the best tourist places not just in Gujarat but in India. Entry tickets are available near the main gate and the rates per person seem to be reasonable after the visit. There is so much to see and explore once you’re in. The entrance gate is a replica of India Gate and the decorative hut type ticket office itself tells you about the quality and importance of the place you are going to visit. The Radha Krishna temple near the entrance makes your day joyful. There is a round building in the premises which replicates our Parliament House. The Indian map with plants creeping on the walls is another attraction. Statues of Mahatma Gandhi with others going for Dandi March look natural and real. A big statue of Mahatma Gandhi sitting with his favourite Charkha is another noticeable feature. The lookalike Parliament building is in fact a museum. Unfortunately we couldn’t see it from inside as it was closed. There is another replica of Red Fort which has statues of Mahatma Gandhi along with other freedom fighters. Photos can be clicked sitting with these statues. Mahatma Gandhi’s struggle to free India and his work with other leaders are displayed here. Guides are available inside the museum to explain everything. As it was getting dark the lights were on and this made the whole place look like a dream. The fountains were looking great and were tempting tourists to click photos. The restaurant inside the building with yummy items is a great place to enjoy Chinese and Indian cuisine. The Bhungas and the beautiful well maintained garden all around the place are unimaginable. Neat and clean premises with large open area is good for children to enjoy their time. At last it was time for us to witness a more interesting event, the Laser Show. The tourists were requested to sit on the ground to watch the 30 minutes light show. It was all about our freedom fighters and the historical places of India. Great show which must be seen by all tourists. Photography is allowed inside the craft park and minimum time required to be spent is about 2 to 3 hours. Parking is available on one corner of the Bhujodi Craft Park. This place definitely raises our patriotic pride.

Nestled just fifteen kilometers east of Bhuj, the Living and Learning Design Centre (LLDC) is a captivating destination for anyone fascinated by the rich tapestry of Kutch's traditional crafts. This remarkable NGO-run museum serves as both an educational hub and a gallery, showcasing an impressive array of local handicrafts such as textiles, pottery, and woodworking. Visitors can explore well-curated galleries that highlight 42 unique embroidery styles from various communities like the Ahir, Maghwal, and Rabari.
If you want a sneak peak into the world of Kutch art and craft, then you should visit this museum. There are 3 galleries and you need at least an hour n half to see all the galleries. Very well planned museum. And it is completely guided. There is a cafeteria too.

A place made to appreciate and celebrate local embroidery skills. Exhibition is mainly that. Along with pottery and block printings etc. People who don’t have an eye to understand such art may find this walk through a bit boring. They can indulge in Hands on activities like block printing and pottery for fun. The building and the campus is designed beautifully. I found the building architecture more interesting. But tourist should visit once to understand the city and its people.

With my whole heart, I deeply appreciate the work that the LLDC Museum has put into creating this space. The level of research, documentation, and the intent behind building the museum is truly commendable. It’s clear that this institution is doing meaningful work, both for the city and for the preservation and promotion of the arts. The museum is beautifully maintained, and the exhibits are rich in culture and craftsmanship. Every gallery reflects thoughtfulness and a deep respect for the traditions it represents. The exhibition design is effortless and informative. The staff are also polite, efficient, and contribute to making the overall experience smooth and pleasant. Naam bade Darshan chote is apt for them. I went for learning Lippan art. They charged a huge amount as compared to the rest other artists teaching there in Bhuj. We didn’t mind in paying thinking it’s a great institution. But very bad experience. They just want to fill up their pockets only. I didn’t learn anything that was about the money I paid but even then I didn’t mind. I was supposed to make one frame there completely and one more they told me they will give me a whole kit for that. When I came to hotel later I found mirrors were all small and I will not be able to use it in one frame. Very miser staff n institution I will say. They say the mom goes to the person who teaches but I paid for the institute. The institute when they are running such workshop they should give proper kits with sufficient materials and also the level of training also needs to be professional. It’s a real shame first on Shrujan LLDC and then the staff. They talk too much about their institution but it’s not the same in the experience. They think they will become rich by extortion of money and it will help them then fine good for them. The institution is responsible and it’s shameful

One of the best place in Morbi to hangout. I would strongly suggest to visit this place when you are in the city. There is a safe and enough place for parking.
Sunny V — Google review
As one enters Morbi swaying pylons of the suspension bridge and the beatific riverfront is a nostalgic reminder of Victorian London. Located 64 km from Rajkot is the town of Morbi with its quaint cobbled alleyways and buildings reminiscent of 19th century Europe. Morbi’s former ruler Sir Waghji inspired by Colonial influences designed a technologically planned and versatile city. The visitor is welcomed into the city through a grand suspension bridge, an artistic and technological marvel of that period. European influence in town planning further contributed to a central square known as the Green Chowk, approachable by three gates each designed in its own inimitable style incorporating both Rajput and Italian elements.

This place is the best place for the kids in Surendranagar. There are lots of playing instruments where kids enjoys their rides and have a fun. For elders they can do walking and jogging. Sunday and Saturday rushes will be there. Timing 6pm to 10pm. Outside of park jumping place and riding kids car also attracts the kids. Four star is because of small spaces. In weekends it will be too crowded.

Modhera Sun Temple

Mentioned on
3 lists
Hindu temple
Sights & Landmarks
The Modhera Sun Temple, built in 1027 by Bhimdev of the Solanki dynasty, is a monumental Hindu temple known for its intricate sculptures and sacred reservoir. Similar to the famous Sun Temple at Konark, it was designed for the dawn sun to shine on the image of Surya during the equinox. The temple complex also features Surya Kund, a remarkable step-well with over 100 shrines.
The Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat is an architectural masterpiece that transports you back to the grandeur of the 11th century. Built by King Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty, this temple is dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, and stands as a stunning example of India’s rich heritage and advanced craftsmanship. The moment you enter, the sight of the magnificent stepwell (Surya Kund) instantly captivates you. The symmetrical steps, intricately carved shrines, and reflections of the temple in the water create a truly divine atmosphere. As you move towards the main temple complex, the carvings on the walls come alive with stories from Hindu mythology—every sculpture has a tale to tell, depicting gods, celestial beings, and scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The temple’s design is ingeniously aligned with the solar movement—during equinoxes, the first rays of the sun illuminate the sanctum, symbolizing divine energy. Even though the idol no longer remains, the spiritual essence of the place is palpable. The Archaeological Survey of India has done an excellent job in maintaining the site. The lawns are well-kept, signage is clear, and the surroundings are peaceful. The nearby museum offers deeper insights into the temple’s history and Solanki architecture. Modhera is a must-visit for history buffs, architecture lovers, and anyone seeking serenity beyond the usual tourist circuits. Visit early in the morning or during sunset for the most enchanting views. Tip: Don’t miss the evening light and sound show—it beautifully brings the temple’s history to life.

An amazing monument built before 1000 years is a must visit place for everyone. This temple is a perfect example of extreme engineering and technology before 1k years. The entire campus kept neat and clean. The whole structure was built on sand stones and is located right on the tropic of cancer. Do understand the history of this temple with the help of registerd guide which was available there and will charge 500 Rs per group which is quite reasonable. Overall a must must visit place for every Indian.
Brijesh K — Google review
My recent visit to the Modhera Sun Temple in Gujarat was nothing short of mesmerizing — a journey through time and artistry. Dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, this 11th-century masterpiece was built by King Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty and stands as a testament to India’s architectural brilliance. As I walked through the temple complex, the symmetry of the grand Surya Kund (stepwell), the intricate carvings on every pillar and wall, and the play of sunlight illuminating the sanctum left me in awe. The temple, aligned perfectly so that the first rays of the sun touch the idol of Surya during equinoxes, reflects the advanced astronomical understanding of that era. Even without the deity now, the spiritual energy of the place is palpable. Surrounded by serene landscapes and the gentle hum of history, Modhera Sun Temple is not just a monument — it’s a poetic fusion of science, devotion, and stone craftsmanship that every traveller should experience. Unfortunately, I could not wait for the late evening light-and-sound show as there was just too much time to wait, too much crowd and too much distance to cover back to Ahmedabad. Also, the weather was super hot! But the show, shot by a tourist is available on YouTube. It is one of the best shows at heritage sites. So, if you plan to visit Modhera, it will be beneficial to visit it around 5 pm giving you enough time to see the temple till the 7pm show. The Sarkari Archaeological Museum here is super sad though!

A truly mesmerizing and peaceful place to visit! The temple stands as a reminder of how advanced and artistic our ancestors were. The carvings are detailed, every pillar and wall tells a story — it’s hard to believe something built over 1,000 years ago can still look this stunning 🤯. The highlight here is the Surya Kund (stepwell) 💧— beautifully designed with hundreds of small shrines all around. The reflection of the temple in the water during sunrise or sunset looks magical 🌅. You can sit near the steps and just soak in the calmness; it feels timeless. The whole area is clean and well maintained 🌿, with greenery around and benches to rest. It’s quiet, peaceful, and perfect for photography 📸 or just a relaxing walk. 🚗 Parking is available nearby, and basic facilities like restrooms and drinking water are there, though could be improved a bit. ⭐ Overall, an amazing heritage site that makes you proud of Indian architecture and culture. A must-visit spot if you’re anywhere near Mehsana or Ahmedabad.
Bhadra M — Google review
The Sun Temple at Modhera is truly one of Gujarat’s most breathtaking heritage sites. The stunning stepped tank and the incredibly detailed stone carvings create an atmosphere that feels like stepping into history. The architecture is precise, graceful, and filled with artistic stories that show the brilliance of ancient craftsmanship. The temple complex has a peaceful and calming vibe, with plenty of open space to walk around and admire its beauty from different angles. The sunlight beautifully highlights the carvings throughout the day, especially during early morning or late evening, making it a dream spot for photography and quiet reflection. Overall, the Sun Temple stands as a proud symbol of our culture and creativity. The area is well-maintained, staff members are polite, and the whole experience inspires curiosity and admiration for India’s rich past. A perfect place for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys serene and meaningful places!

After the Ranaki Vav in Patan, if you want to see another amazing piece of Solanki architecture, then the Modhera Sun Temple near Mehsana is a must-visit place. Built by King Bhimdev I in the 11th century, this temple is dedicated to Surya Narayana and you will be mesmerized by its carvings. ✨ Temple Features: Stunning Architecture: The temple is divided into three main parts: the magnificent Surya Kund (Ramkund) with 108 deris, the 52-pillared Sabha Mandap and the main Sanctum. Historical Carvings: The exquisite carvings of Ramayana-Mahabharata episodes, gods and goddesses on the walls of this temple give it the glory of being the 'Khajuraho of Gujarat'. Nearby Attractions: The Modheshwari Mata Temple, located near the Sun Temple, is also worth a visit. Special Guide for Tourists: This temple is located in the inner part of Modhera village. Public transport may charge a higher fare to reach here. Kind Request: To avoid this hassle, tourists are requested to bring their own personal vehicle, so that the visit is easy and economically convenient. If you use public transport, then get the exact information about the correct fare from the locals before deciding on the fare. Conclusion: A wonderful blend of history, sculpture and religious faith is the Modhera Sun Temple. This is a place that showcases the beauty and culture of Gujarat.

A stunning 11th-century Sun Temple built during the reign of Bhima I of the Chaulukya dynasty. Located about 100 km from Ahmedabad (approx. 2-hour drive), it's a beautifully preserved heritage site. Timings: 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM Tickets: Available at the entrance (nominal fee, cash preferred). The Surya Kund, intricate carvings, and temple layout are mesmerizing-especially during rains when the golden sandstone shines brilliantly. Tip: Visit early morning or late afternoon for the best experience. Comfortable shoes and water recommended.

The history of the temple is beautiful, and it is well maintained also just bcoz of birds the place is little stinking. Another thing do not take guide, that's waste of money, what you need to do is when you are at temple just open your Wikipedia, it has each and every information. And the guides are also speaking work to work from there only.

Located in Modhera (approximately 2 hoyrs from Ahmedabad), the Modeshwari temple or Matangi temple is a temple of Maa Matangi. The goddess idol is made of marble, and the idol is mesmerizing. The goddess is riding the lion, and whenever I visit this temple, it feels so serene. The temple has many other god idols. They have a room where they have everything the goddess from clothes to make up to swing to umbrella to toy tigers. It is a Shringar area where the goddess is to get ready. They have a well under which Goddess idol is known to miraculously appear by itself. I'd youbare around that area then do visit this temple and experience bliss for yourself. If you want to offer something like clothes or chattar to mataji, then you need to get an entry for those items done before taking it to the temple priest. They will ask you the amount of the items and give you a receipt for the same. They will give you prasad based on that receipt. The temple also offers food to the devotees, and if you want to eat lunch at the time, make sure you reach before 1pm as it closes at 1pm. There is a beautiful sun temple nearby at modhera. If you have free time you can definitely visit there as well.

According to Hindu mythology, the temple is associated with the legend of the demon Karnata, who ravaged the village. For protection, the saints prayed to Goddess Parvati, who then appeared as Mother Modheswari. With various weapons in her eighteen hands, she defeats the demon and protects the villagers.
