Gray — Google review
A historic and iconic red‑and‑white striped lighthouse standing at the estuary of Ishikari River. Built in 1892, it is Hokkaido’s oldest surviving lighthouse. It was originally made of wood and painted black and white, but was later rebuilt in iron and repainted in its now-famous red and white colors after it was featured in one of Japan’s early color films. Visitors can walk along a raised boardwalk through the dunes of Hamanasu no Oka Park to get a closer view of the lighthouse. The area is especially beautiful in summer when coastal plants and roses are in bloom. The lighthouse itself is not open to the public, as it has been fully automated and unmanned since 1965, but it continues to function as an active navigational beacon visible from up to 13 nautical miles away. The surrounding area offers great views of the Ishikari River mouth, sandy shores, and distant Hokkaido landscapes. There is free parking nearby, and the spot is peaceful, photogenic, and ideal for those who appreciate nature, quiet walks, or historical landmarks.

(Translated by Google) First visit on September 10, 2024. Originally a wooden hexagonal black and white lighthouse, it has been open for over 130 years since its first lighting in 1982 (M25), and is the oldest existing lighthouse in Hokkaido. In 1908 (M41) it was rebuilt into a circular steel structure with a solid white exterior. In 1957 (S32), it was repainted to red and white at the request of the movie company before the local shooting of the Shochiku film ``How Many Years of Joy and Sorrow'' (from then on, it was repainted red and white, ``Oh Irami Saki''). ~♫”). It seems that when it opened, it was located at the tip of the Ishikari River estuary, but the sandbar has grown and it is now land about 1 km from the tip of the estuary. It is a small lighthouse with a height of 13.5m. When you visit Ishikari Lighthouse, be sure to take a look at the nearby ``Ishikari - Innocents'' bronze statue (produced by Shin Hongo). Otaru Aquarium is a must-visit attraction for families and tourists, showcasing a wide variety of marine life exhibits and hosting entertaining shows featuring penguins, dolphins, and seals. Situated near Otaru's Shukutsu Port, the aquarium offers breathtaking views of the ocean from its outdoor area. Visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty and diversity of marine species while enjoying an educational experience.
the exhibition is not very big but educational with a good collection of rare species. The shows are entertaining especially the penguins going to picnic. It is a perfect sized aquarium ; you get enough but not exhausted. There are not computer simulations nor games to attract children, only real natural things. So don’t need to worry about screens. 👏
Lixia D — Google review
This is an old aquarium with a marine mammal area that features shows. While the aquarium itself isn't very big, I was amazed by the size of the animals; they're huge! The marine mammal area has shows with walruses, seals, penguins, and sea lions. Some of the animals seemed too lazy to perform, but the trainers didn't force them, which I thought was a nice touch. They also have a separate area for caring for old or disabled animals, and I hope they're all receiving excellent care.
Sawit K — Google review
Nice 5 show start from 1pm. All the,way till around 3pm. Out of 5, 4 show is external area beside the sea. Not all got sitting area. Nice experience. Indoor nothing much, pretty small.
Wei C — Google review
Loved this aquarium. This aquarium is very different from the Osaka aquarium as there were different shows of the dolphins, seals , penguins and sea lion. It was a unique and fun experience with an amazing view of the sea and the especially loved the lighthouse and performances!
Farrel K — Google review
We regret we just found out this amazing aquarium this summer! I agree with the previous reviews about not too much but everything is excellent! 1. Check their website for activities timetable. 2. The shows are amazing! 3. We get to feed the seals outside of the aquarium. 1000yen vs 500yen 4. Touching areas have a wide variety selections in marine life. 5. If you didn’t get to see all the things show on the timetable, you definitely need to come back again! 6. We love the sea turtles and the seals. A little concerned about the seals. A couple of them have their one of their eyes closed and we were worried if they are sick. Just want someone to follow up.
Zoey Z — Google review
This aquarium is 60 years old, and it shows. The state of the painting of the walls, design, and general cleanliness condition of the rooms is very low. In almost all the animal tanks there is rust. Honestly, it was sad to see the condition those animals are been kept. We observe the dolphins, penguins and lion seals shows.
Maor A — Google review
A retro aquarium reminiscent of the Showa era. You can feel the effort that went into keeping the animals through the exhibits, dolphin shows, and laid-back penguin shows. It's a wonderful aquarium that you'll want to visit again and again!
岩田網代 — Google review
Although it was a little crowded, it was still such a fun experience! You even get to buy fish to feed the sea lion – definitely a highlight. Not to forget the penguin walk, which was super cute to watch! Just a heads-up: people start gathering really early, so it’s hard to get a good spot unless you’re there ahead of time haha. Overall, a fun and memorable visit – great for families and animal lovers!

Former Japanese National Railways, Temiya line

Mentioned on

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
Former Japanese National Railways, Temiya line was part of Hokkaido's first railway, the Horonai Line, built in 1880 for transporting coal and marine products. It operated for over a century before closing in 1985. The narrow gauge track reduced construction costs. After passenger service ended in 1962, it continued as a freight line until its complete closure. Now developed into a walking trail, it attracts tourists with snow sculptures and lighting installations.
Although lots of people prefer to just look around the canal-part of Otaru, if you are planning to atay here for a night, it is highly recommended for you to take a stroll around railroad-part of Otaru where you get to enjoy different atmosphere of the city.

A funny photo spot. I especially like the more quiet street with all the small houses and the pretty flowers. A fun place to visit of you're already in Otaru

Hotel Torifito Otaru Canal

Japanese-style business hotel
Sights & Landmarks
Hotel Torifito Otaru Canal is a charming and unpretentious hotel that has been reimagined from the vintage Hokkaido Echuya Hotel, which was originally built in 1937. The hotel holds historical significance as it was the first hotel in Hokkaido exclusively for overseas visitors and later repurposed by the military during wartime. Designated as a historical building, it has undergone a bold renovation while preserving its historical aesthetics.
Good Location. Closed to the canal and located at the beginning of the shopping street. We got ourself a room for 4. With the extra bunk bead. The toilet and the shower area are separated for convenience. The space for 5 luggages are small but manageable. There is a chargeable Parking space for the hotel guest just at the side of the hotel. For some reason they require you to park head in first. So far I find most Japanese hotels have very good breakfast. Same with this hotel. It was snowing when we are there, The hotel have umbrellas that you can borrow. Overall good stay.

Great place to stay, just a short walk from the scenic Otaru Canal and the lively shopping streets. The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable, with thoughtful amenities and cozy decor. One of the highlights is the public bath, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. The staff are friendly and helpful, making the stay even more pleasant. With a convenient location and peaceful atmosphere, it’s just great. Parking is available with a flat fee, there are other options for parking as well in surrounding area.
Peng C — Google review
Nice hotel with good location closed to the canal and walking distance to Sakaimachi shopping street. There’s a paid parking ¥1500 per night at the hotel premises. The room was a little tight for 2 big luggage but we managed anyway. The hotel is clean and staff were friendly. The breakfast was good and full of variety.
Liz C — Google review
Steategic location where is within walking distance. Nice facilities including public bath. Room comes with this beautiful barrel-like mini fridge that look so cool. Definitely will come here again when we visit Otaru in the future.
Adam R — Google review
Tatami room. Quiet and spacious, though when you first enter the room there’s a sour-y smell, likely from the tatami. Overall a good two night stay for our Otaru trip.
YChian T — Google review
Overall a great experience. Good location as well, however a few issues to note. 1. WiFi is intermittent, we came from a few other hotels, no issues, only this hotel. 4G signal not the best too. First time experiencing this in Japan. 2. Pillows are too soft, one pillow had beads below it. My hand went numb putting my hand below it (which I’m always used to when sleeping) 3. The onsen is a really small and tight space. It can get really crowded as well. Did not manage to use it since I am not used to being packed like sardines in a small pool of hot water. 4. TV had its menu purely in Japanese. Couldn’t use it at all. 5. Do note that parking is limited as well. Y1500 per day.
Justin K — Google review
The hotel is close to the Otaru Canal and many souvenir shops. It’s a short walk to the JR station. We couldn’t book a twin room and had to get a king size bed instead. Although it was called a king size, the bed wasn’t very large, but it was still comfortable enough for two people. The public bath offers Sekkisei and DHC skincare products, and there is also a body composition scale available. The staff were polite and courteous.
Rachel C — Google review
Seriously, this 20-minute wait after a load is done is a nightmare for anyone trying to get their laundry done. It's like, the clothes are done, let me in! This waiting period is just a huge inconvenience. I really wish they'd change this policy so people can use the machines more efficiently. It's just not a practical system.

The Bank of Japan Otaru Museum

Mentioned on

Local history museum
Museums
The Bank of Japan Otaru Museum, housed in a 1912 building, offers a captivating insight into the history of the yen and Otaru's economic development. The museum showcases exhibits on banking and national currency. Interestingly, the building's architecture deviates from traditional Japanese style, resembling Western European design. This former bank provides an atmospheric backdrop for its historical displays.
When i first saw this, I told my friend that I won't be seeing a museum of a bank since I worked in a bank for my whole career. But somehow, I ended up getting a museum pass, and this museum is included, so I visited this place as well. The most interesting component here is the periodic light show on the ceiling that happens every hr. Either grab a seat on the ground floor or enjoy it closer on the 2nd floor. The rooms and area show how fancy the bank meetings used to be back in the days. Nowadays, you rarely get to have a large room for bank advisor meetings...
Luke L — Google review
Otaru has a rich history of being the former financial centre for the Hokkaido region, this bank is a testament to that history. I was able to explore this bank which preserves a beautiful architectural design features from decades ago. It also has many Japanese bank notes from history, as well as a large safe which you can step inside to see the magnitude of the money that was held here at one point in time. Walking through this bank was a phenomenal lesson in history of the progress and development that has taken place in the Japanese financial area. It also has various graphics in place to help members of the public understand the scale of monetary money flow. Since this is a free museum and located a close walk away from the Otaru Canal I do recommend walking over here as it is absolutely worth checking out. Just ensure that you leave any drinks or food at the front before you walk in or the security guards may confront you later on about this. There is a small souvenir store from which you can purchase things if your feeling it as well
Osama B — Google review
Admission is free - it’s a pretty fun museum where you get to learn about fiscal policy and the benefits of the new Japanese yen notes. Pretty informative. Also kudos to them having good English translations.

Free admission. The experiential parts were interesting - lifting 100 million yen, magnified view of the note, UV view of the note. Ok for a visit.

An interesting museum about banking in otaru. There was an extensive collection of exhibits and explanations of the history. There was limited English explanation though. Overall it's a well kept museum.
HL T — Google review
The museum itself is not that big in size, but it has many interactive things, that make it an enjoyable visit. You can also experience "bringing" a million yen using your hands! Will revisit again after the new "face" of Japanese money is issued!

University volunteers are the unsung heroes of the campus tour experience. Their dedication, expertise, and personal touch create an unforgettable and enlightening journey for us.

(Comments related to the campus scenery only, not its academic standing) very walkable campus with lots of greenery and rustic European buildings. Not a lot of tall glassy modern building per se.
Misotam — Google review
A wonderful campus with a lot of green spaces. It is quite smaller than I thought; perhaps one can tour the whole campus in less than a day; nonetheless it does quite have its own allure and I can totally understand why many foreigner students would want to attend Hokudai. The University Museum also is a great place for visitors, as they have an extensive display of university archives + some ongoing research from different labs in campus. Definitely would recommend for those who have plenty of time to go around different parts of Sapporo.

Visited here during fourth week of August 2023. A beautiful campus with a lot of green spaces and historical buildings. About 7 minutes’walk from Sapporo station to its main gate and 4 minutes’walk from Kita Juni Jo Station to North 13 Gate (Kita-jusanjo Gate, near Ginkgo Avenue). Among places visited are Sakushukotoni River - SAKUSHU琴似川 (flows through the Hokkaido University campus, runs south-north through what is almost the centre of the campus), Furukawa Hall - 古河纪念讲堂 (built in 1909 by the funds from Furukawa Zaibatsu. Hokkaido University is located center of sapporo city! before we visited here, we couldn't believe such as beautiful scenery exists center of bog city! our purpose of visiting was the museum which is located inside of university! but, we changed our plan to look around campus! wow, at that time was summer! green color of scenery make me cool peacefully! we missed it so much!

Beautiful campus with many green areas and friendly to pedestrians. Just be careful with the students on bikes (some of them seem to feel they are driving an 18-wheeler).

I went there on a family trip in autumn three years ago. I still remember the beauty of the college. The temperature is comfortable, and the building is historical. I think that it will have another magnificent scenario in winter. Studying at this college is blissful!

Japanese prefecture government office
Sights & Landmarks
Hokkaidō Government Office, also known as the Former Government Office Building, is a striking red-brick structure dating back to the 1880s. This historical landmark boasts an American Neo-Baroque architectural style and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits on Hokkaido's history and view the meticulously detailed Ezo Taigaizu map created by Matsuura Takeshiro.
I came here in summer 2023 and the government office building was under construction. And the front was covered. This time I got to see the real building which was very beautiful but still inside was under renovation until July 2025. Giving me more reasons to come back to visit. There’s a spot on the left side facing the building. A bridge on the pond which reminded me of Monet’s painting.

It is a beautiful place that the garden portion is opens to public. I think~ The garden itself is beautiful too with large trees, flower beds and couple ponds. I can see people sitting on the bench throughout the park next by the water or under the trees! The tulip is blooming at the time when I visit it. Great place for some nice photos!
Steven C — Google review
We visited the Former Hokkaido Government Office, affectionately known as the Red Brick Office, during our walk around Sapporo and were pleasantly surprised by how charming it was. The red-brick architecture really stands out in the city—it’s elegant, classic, and photogenic from every angle. Even though restoration works were ongoing, the surrounding gardens were still open and beautifully maintained. We strolled through paths lined with flowers and trees, and there were plenty of spots to stop for photos or just enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Inside, we explored some of the history exhibits and even saw a reconstruction of the Governor’s office. It’s not a huge museum, but it’s rich in Hokkaido’s heritage and doesn’t take long to explore. This place felt like a calm, green pause in the middle of the city and gave us a meaningful glimpse into Hokkaido’s past. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Sapporo.

The Sapporo Clock Tower, also known as the Clock Tower, is a historic wooden building that has become an iconic sightseeing spot in Hokkaido. Originally completed in 1878 as the Former Sapporo Agricultural College Drill Hall, it now houses a museum showcasing the history of Sapporo. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property, this building has close ties to Hokkaido University and is used for academic events.
Small museum with great little titbits about the university of Hokkaido and the history of sapporo. Also impressive to see the mechanism of the clocktower which is still in its original form. But what left the best impression was to have a free tour guide that speak English and could explain in detail every panels as well as awnser my questions. Another tour was happening right next to mine, so it didn't seem like a rare occurrence either. For the price and the proximity to jr station, would definitely recommend!
Felix D — Google review
Nothing really too special about this old clock house. It may have its significant at the time when it was built but it is now surrounded by modern buildings! If you pay ¥350 for a ticket to visit inside of the building but the information displayed is all in Japanese, Chinese and Korean, very few have English distribution. But the mechanical clock display inside on the second floor is very cool. Just like many other photo location, there is a stand in front of the building that is set up for taking selfie!

The Sapporo TV Tower, built in 1957, is one of the city’s earliest landmarks and has stood watch over Odori Park for more than six decades. Designed during Japan’s post-war modernisation period, it originally served as a key broadcasting tower and quickly became a symbol of Sapporo. Visiting in winter is especially beautiful. From the observation deck, the view of Odori Park blanketed in snow feels almost timeless—quiet, white, and serene. The symmetrical lines of the park, covered in soft snow, make the city look peaceful and historic, as though time has slowed down. A simple but meaningful stop for anyone who wants to appreciate Sapporo’s history and the gentle beauty of its snowy landscape.

Very nice museum, about the history of the building. Most explanations are translated jn English. There is also a spot inside to take pictures with a statue Dr Clark and a small shop. Visited in June, and the inside of the building was very hot despite fans and some air conditioning.

You can spend 20-30 mins here in between your city walks of Sapporo, a good spot to take short break as well because there's a big sitting hall on second floor. While you taking a break from your 10,000 steps, you can read and checking the videos explaining the history of this clock tower.

worth the visit. Learn the history of this clock tower. overall I only took less than an hour to tour its museum and exhibition. There is souvenirs shop inside too.

Unique clock tower. Probably one of the most prominent attractions in Sapporo. This historic site tells a tale of how Japan bought the bell from the US for a school building that eventually became this site. Pay cash at entrance to enter. There are 2 floors of history to read up. Tip, the bell rung at 12pm sharp when we are there. Paid parking at public carparks. There is a small road where you can park at the side of the tower which will be the nearest.

Usui Masao was a terrific host at this wonderful historical landmark. He spoke English, well. He was knowledgeable regarding facts that related to Japan and America! Most of the information he shared would have taken goes to get by translating each picture and item at the museum. Some, I'm sure, we wouldn't have known without him.

The Sapporo TV Tower, a famous landmark built in the 1950s, stands at 147.3 meters tall at the end of Odori Park in Sapporo City. Its observation deck, situated 90 meters above ground level, provides stunning panoramic views of the city and beyond. Visitors can enjoy iconic night views of Odori Park and experience thrilling transparent glass panels that slope down to their feet.
The Sapporo TV Tower is such a fun and iconic landmark right in the heart of Odori Park! 🗼✨ The view from the observation deck is amazing – you can see the whole stretch of Odori Park, the city skyline, and on a clear day even the surrounding mountains. Both day and night views are beautiful, but the evening lights of Sapporo are especially magical. The tower itself is well maintained, easy to access, and has a friendly staff that makes the experience smooth and welcoming. The little shops at the base also have some nice souvenirs unique to Sapporo. It’s not just about the view – visiting here feels like checking off a must-do cultural landmark of Hokkaido. Highly recommend adding it to your Sapporo itinerary – whether for sightseeing, photography, or simply enjoying the city from above! 🌆📸

My siblings and I recently visited the Sapporo TV Tower, and it turned out to be a fun and memorable experience. This iconic landmark, located in Odori Park, offers stunning views of the city and is a must-visit for anyone exploring Sapporo. Despite the presence of numerous tourists, the overall atmosphere remained lively and enjoyable. The observation deck provides a panoramic view of Sapporo, showcasing its urban charm and surrounding natural beauty. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, the experience of seeing the city from such a height is undeniably captivating. Sapporo TV Tower is not just about the views—it’s about immersing yourself in the vibrant energy of the city. Our visit was filled with laughter, photo-taking, and quality time spent together. It's a place where memories are made and where the bustling spirit of Sapporo truly comes alive.

I didn’t find much to do above ground in the odori park area other than going up the tv tower. However, there are many shops and restaurants underground there. More importantly, it is much more easy to get from the train station to your hotel, wherever it is, with your luggage by using the underground. This way you can avoid all of the intersections.

A lot of people, some walk fast without care about old people walk slowly and pushing. Really bad experiences here. Some running inside. This not call shopping mall, it’s just a market only, you can’t even stop, see and choose the items to buy. Only good things here are clean.

Stay at Mercure Sapporo Hotel. It located near Susukino Station. The entertainment area have so many bars, restaurants with all night opened, clubs. The station has both subway and tram/ street car ( loop line). At the station, the passengers can see real-time of all trams locations. In Denmark, I don’t think we have same kind of display locations of the tram at real time yet. But the expected time arrival of each bus. Here you have very great overview. Long life technology. It is very convenient area with very great tram form 2016. No doubt why it wins the great design . We also lucky to take the tram on Sunday. The tram was for free that day. Very good way to motivating people to go out😊.

One or two of the station agents here is very against foreign visitors, i tried to ask for directions and didn’t know the difference of the ticket options. But, they only reply in Japanese and keep on saying the word soporro which I know I have to make a transit. But the difference between the tickets, they still don’t reply or try to understand me. The third time I contacted them, finally one speaks in English but also refused to explain the ticket. I eventually gave up on understanding the difference and bought the ticket. And i asked about the reason why they don’t answer my questions, “NO ENGLISH! No! English No!” is the reason I got.

It is located on the Namboku Line and Sapporo Streetcar, the heart of Sapporo’s ‘business’ district. Susukino, in which are concentrated many restaurants, bars, hotels, and adult-entertainment establishments is the location the largest red-light district north of Japan along with Kabukicho Tokyo and Nakasu Fukuoka. Literally Susukino means zebra grass field. But some theories are developed that Susukino is named after Tatsuyuki Usui, a supervisor in the construction of the red-light district in Hokkaido’s capital city. Ok, enough for the literature study of this name.

I've been here multiple times and it's always beautiful. You can walk, use the sightseeing boat, swanboats, paddle boats etc. They all cost between 1000-2000 yen per 30mins to 1 hour. Perfect place to rest with family or even alone. Though make sure to bring CASH!! All the restaurant use cash expect for 1 or 2 store. There's an ATM on the map nearby but closes at 12pm. Also all the shops closes by 1600 and 1700

Lake Shikotsu, a stop between 2 cities! Driving from Sapporo to Noboribetsu isn’t that long, about an hour and a half, or so I thought! (Read the bottom part) so we decided to make a stopover at Lake Shitose! About half way between Sapporo & Noboribetsu. What an amazing destination & a total favourite with both locals & tourists alike! They have this humongous Tourist Information Center, a whole bunch of very popular restaurants, and an activity Center, can rent canoes and all kind of other lake related stuff! My lady wanted to do the “Swan Ride” on the lake, but unfortunately closed as the water was a tad choppy! A lovely park for a nice stroll and of course a promenade, to wander along! Enjoyable for a 90 minute layover so to speak! Certainly worth it! too #googlemaps! Please make sure you update your navigation, the road to get out from there, was closed adding another 60 minute driving! Although the scenery was lovely but still! 😡 #sapporo #Japantravels #MarketAdventures #gourmettravels #selfdrivingholidays #hokkaido #noboribetsu #sapporo #lakeshikotsu

Lake Shikotsu is truly a natural wonder. Surrounded by lush greenery and rolling forested mountains, the scenery feels both peaceful and vibrant. The lake itself is remarkably clean, with crystal-clear water that shimmers beautifully under the sunlight. There’s a refreshing moisture in the air that makes every breath feel crisp and pure, almost like nature’s own air spa. What makes Lake Shikotsu so amazing is its serene beauty combined with its untouched atmosphere. The calm surface of the water reflects the surrounding green hills, creating postcard-like views in every direction. Whether walking along the lakeside, taking a boat out, or simply sitting by the shore, it’s easy to feel relaxed and recharged here. Overall, Lake Shikotsu is one of Hokkaido’s most beautiful natural spots—green, clean, and full of life. A perfect escape for anyone who loves pure nature and breathtaking landscapes.

Spectacular lake view surrounded by interesting volcanoes. I suggest coming in autumn when most of the leaves are yellow and red, which will enhance the experience. You can go stand up paddle boarding and pedal boating on the lakes. On a clear day, the reflections of the clouds and mountains in the water is incredible. When you take photos of the fish, the reflection makes it look like the fish are swimming in the clouds. Perfect for any occasion, this place is a must come.
Zac C — Google review
Beautiful stunning view from the mountain and the lake is so clear when seeing with the sun. And sparkling in the same time. The wind is strong but it give you the romantic good vibe
Nisarat T — Google review
I visited Lake Shikotsu and it was a very nice experience overall. The lake is known for its beautifully clear water and stunning scenic views, and it definitely lived up to its reputation in that regard. The natural surroundings are peaceful and make for a relaxing atmosphere — great for taking a walk or just enjoying the scenery. There are a few things to see and do around the lake area — you can explore the walking paths, visit the small shops and cafés nearby, or take a sightseeing boat ride on the lake. The views of the mountains reflecting on the water are truly beautiful, especially on a clear day. That said, the area itself is relatively small, so depending on what you’re looking for, it may be more of a short visit than a full-day activity. It’s great if you want to appreciate nature and take some nice photos, but there aren’t a huge number of attractions or activities beyond the lake itself. Overall, Lake Shikotsu is worth a visit if you’re in the area and want to enjoy some beautiful natural scenery. It’s a nice, calm place to take a break from the city and soak in the views.

What a surprise!! We came across this lovely park and waterfall surrounded by autumn colours on our way through to Lake Toya. Does it get busy? It was quiet at 8:30am, perhaps because the cafe isn't open until 10:00. The park is quite big, with a stream running below a golden hillside. Follow the side path after the cafe to see the waterfall from a small bridge. The leaf colours made it something special. Beautiful!!

(Translated by Google) It takes just a few minutes to walk from the parking lot to the bridge where you can see the waterfall. There is also a water pump a little further ahead. I brought two 4-liter bottles with me. However, in Hokkaido, raw water is not drinkable due to the droppings and urine of red foxes and mice, which cause echinococcus disease. Be sure to boil the water before drinking it. You should not feed the foxes, and you should not even get close to them. Upopoy (National Ainu Museum and Park)

Mentioned on

National museum
Museums
The Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park is an open-air cultural museum located in Hokkaido, showcasing a replicated village and traditional folk dances of the Ainu people. The expansive site contains numerous well-maintained buildings, offering visitors a chance to learn about this indigenous group. The museum's 15-minute video on Ainu history is informative and easy to understand.
The first time I heard about the Ainu people was about 2 years ago. Over time, I got more information and when I planned to travel to Hokkaido, I just couldn’t miss visiting the Upopoy National Ainu Museum. There are a few ways to reach the place. I took a train from Sapporo station to Shiraoi station, which took me about an hour.
It’s better to dedicate a whole day to exploring the whole Museum complex and park and dive deeper into the Ainu culture. You have a chance to observe traditional Ainu buildings, try to wear traditional Ainu clothes, learn their language or attend the craft workshops. There’s also the Cultural Exchange Hall, where you can watch a short film about Ainu culture. Take some time to walk around the park to enjoy the nature and the lake landscape. Don’t worry about the tickets, you can buy them at the ticket desk or ticket vending machine at the entrance. The place is highly recommended for visiting.
Sergey К — Google review
Highly recommend. The train to Shiraoi is covered under the JR rail pass, so we didn't have to pay separate for transportation. We chose to go here over the koten village more north as its much more accessible, especially with time constraints. Everyone was extremely friendly and we were actively included in experiences. There are several love demonstrations throughout the day and effort was put into English translations for for displays (staff was also very kind and went out of their way for us in speaking english/ using translating apps) to make sure we understood everything.
Elizabeth S — Google review
Upopoy is great fun and educational. It combines traditional museums with experiences including carving, music, dance and embroidery to name a few. The staff is kind and there seem to be limited foreigners to visit. It can be difficult to get to with public transportation but it is worth a visit.
Sobren15 — Google review
Great place to learn about the Ainu people thru exhibits and cultural performances. The museum building itself is impressive. Lake Poroto is inside the museum grounds, so you can take a calming walk along the lake shore. There are also dining options and gift shops with great products.
Alvin D — Google review
I visited on the Cultural day so it was free!!! I didn’t expect to get free access but seems a lucky day indeed. The artists were good at reflecting the Ainu culture through costumes, dances, musical instruments & so many things. It is better if you go there in the morning. Check the JR schedule & make plans ahead of visiting there otherwise you’ve to wait long time for the train. Definitely a place worth visiting.
Md.Ishtiak R — Google review
We found this museum to be truly exceptional. It not only provides a lot of knowledge about the Ainu and their past and present culture but is is also very interactive and immersive. We saw a dance and music show in the grand hall that was very impressive and loved walking the reconstructed Ainu houses. When looking for English books on Ainu, two ladies in the library went out of their way to help us. Also there are numerous good eating options and two sizeable gift shops.
Ingo ( — Google review
Absolutely stunning setting, expertly crafted exhibits that were informative, with a powerful point of view and really enriched my understanding of the culture. I only wish I'd budgeted more time for this. Its convience minutes away from a JR station made it easy to slot into my itinerary as quicker mid-morning stop on my way to catch the Shinkensen in Hakodate.
Craig J — Google review
Highly recommend to visit this museum if you are around Hokkaido. It provides good explanation about the Ainu's culture and way of living. There's some performance as well inside the traditional house and it has beautiful lake with amazing view especially during sunset..

Noboribetsu Jigokudani Valley

Mentioned on

Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Noboribetsu Jigokudani Valley is a dramatic crater featuring boiling sulfuric hot springs, volcanic steam plumes, and hiking paths. It's part of the tourist hotspot of Jigokudani and houses the popular hot spring resort 'Noboribetsu Onsen,' known for its nine kinds of hot springs.
The scenery here is quite unique—at first glance, it looks like a quarry, but it’s actually a natural mineral area. The sulfur smell is noticeable, adding to the experience. The landscape is fascinating, with steam vents and striking colors created by the minerals. There are several walking paths that let you explore and enjoy the surrounding nature at your own pace. Parking is conveniently located nearby, with a small fee. Clean restrooms. There’s a souvenir shop too. It’s a great spot for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone interested in geology or unusual landscapes. Definitely worth a visit for something different and memorable.
Pechaporn P — Google review
Hell Valley is a unique experience. A day trip from Sapporo, beautiful scenery and a visit to an active volcano area. Steam rises out of the cracks and holes. You can see the water boiling! I had limited time here but well worth the experience! There’s a lot more to do and see in this area and will return for more adventures! The smell of sulfur is strong in some areas but there was a nice breeze that kept it from being too intense. Parking was not an issue as I visited off peak time. Several lots are available though for a fee.
Joy J — Google review
The volcanic landscape feels otherworldly — steam rising from the earth, sulfur smells in the air, and colorful rock formations everywhere. It’s a truly unique experience and easy to explore on foot. A must-visit spot in Hokkaido for nature and photography lovers!
Ricardo S — Google review
This is a great opportunity to see volcano crater up close. The paths around the crater were very easy to walk on. Not only do you get to see the craters up close, the view was stunning with the autumn leaves in the background. The walk down to the natural foot bath was a bit more demanding. We saw many people struggling up the steep path afterwards. Just a tip that you can actually avoid that by just following the path out to the main road, which loops back to the start and is a much easier and more gentle walk up. While there wasn’t a proper pavement for pedestrians, the cars were considerate and we never felt unsafe walking on the road.
Casey C — Google review
I visited Noboribetsu Jigokudani Valley for the first time at the beginning of winter around 5 p.m. There were still many travelers. The weather was very cold, and the strong smell of natural gas filled the air. The scenery was stunning — a true wonder of nature with steam rising from the ground. The sunset made the atmosphere even more magical. Parking costs 500 yen for a personal car. Toilets are available, but no Wi-Fi service here.
Sierra C — Google review
We visited Noboribetsu Hell Valley (Jigokudani) as part of an organized bus tour, and it was a great stop. Around 30–60 minutes is enough to walk the wooden paths, take photos, and enjoy the unique volcanic scenery. The view of the steaming rocks and colourful ground is truly impressive and gives a good sense of Hokkaido’s geothermal nature. As the name suggests, there’s a strong sulfur smell in the air, it’s natural and part of the experience, but some people might find it a bit intense. Visiting with a tour is very convenient since parking can be limited and the area fits well as a short stop between other sights. Definitely worth seeing once. It feels like standing on another planet or in one of the old Power Rangers Sets.

Jigoku Dani (Hell Valley) is the place to visit to get up close to an active volcano with sulphuric acid permeating the air. The area is an easy hike across the colourful autumn forest. Our family thoroughly enjoyed this one day visit to see an active volcano!

Zoos & Aquariums
Noboribetsu Bear Park is a zoo that features around 70 brown bears in enclosures designed to mimic their natural habitats. The park offers environmental enrichments to ensure the well-being of the bears. Visitors can reach the park by taking a ropeway gondola from Sanroku Station in Noboribetsu Hot Spring Town, with a free shuttle bus available for convenience.
For English speakers. Great place to see the bears in Hokkaido. You can feed them some snacks as well as see events throughout the day. You will need to take the Gondola cable car up which is included in the price. About 7 mins ride up. 3000 yen for adults and 1500 yen for kids in elementary school. You need about 2-3 hours but nothing more, unless you want to keep watching the bears. There is a bear museum to look at although many of the sign are not in English. All the events held there are only spoken in Japanese as well. There is Ainu village you can also look at at the top past the bear museum. None of the signs are in English except for some signs about taking off shoes. All in all grear place to see some bears and view from the top is great.

Unique attraction nestled on a mountaintop in Hokkaido, accessible by ropeway with scenic views along the way. The park houses many Ezo brown bears and you can observe them up close in a safe environment. Watching them catch snacks thrown by visitors is both entertaining and adorable. There's also a small museum and a traditional Ainu cultural exhibit. While the facilities are a bit dated, it’s still a great spot for families and animal lovers. A memorable visit with great views and cute bears!
Peng C — Google review
It was a pleasant day trip to visit. Overall, this park was clean and bears were well cared for. But,I still prefer to see this animals to remain wild instead of being in captivity. A few of them seem to be old and it made me sad.
Mei S — Google review
I wish I would read reviews of this place before going there. Awful. My husband said he hasn’t been depressed like this for so long. It is indeed like a prison not a park for bears. If you can’t set them free already, please invest money that we paid for the tickets to make this cages bearable for bears - bigger, newer, with greenery. Let “park” staff feed them themselves. No need to throw out food at them - awful awful “entertainment”. We are in 21st century, no need to behave like barbarians. No vegetation, small spaces, bears look depressed too. Cable car works smoothly - provide with a beautiful view of the Noboribetsu nature, and the view of the lake is beautiful. But the minute the cable car ends its route nothing good is there. I feel ashamed of myself for participating in such a cruel act of feeding them. I should have just left the place immediately. Tons of dead bear mommies as a museum also felt awful. I would like to believe that they do study these bears for the benefit of these species… We as humans do harm nature in different ways. This place felt like shameless harm to these amazing animals. I love Japan and Japanese culture so much - so respectful to everyone, mindful of others. well these big species are alive they deserve respect too. We as humans can do better.
Anna A — Google review
It has a nice tram ride. The scenery is amazing at the top. There is a museum inside where you can learn a lot about the bears and local people. There are lots of little spots to take photos. There is a nice Cafe inside where you can relax and get coffee and some nice food.

Went here while staying in norobetsu.was very good value including the gondola ride for the views alone . The bear park was amazing and well worth it . Very well organised and clean . Even worth feeding the bears with bought bear small ball biscuits..... Very genuine place ...
Paul B — Google review
Gondola ride was the only positive experience. The bears looked very miserable & were being freely feed dried nuggets by tourists, who were trying to elicit reactions from the poor animals as entertainment. There are not any conditions in which any animals should be held… quite the sad sight. Smell was deathly - had me googling ways to try to break these animals out of their enclosures. Gondola was the only positive experience. Would not recommend.

Noboribetsu Date Jidai Village is not your typical theme park. Instead of roller coasters and cartoon characters, this park focuses on Edo-period history, featuring traditional performances, food, and games. The village showcases Edo period-style buildings such as a daimyo residence, merchant shops, and commoners' dwellings.
This is the best experience for ninja culture lovers. The actors/ staff were very interactive and entertaining, as well as the various shows and displays. There are also amazing displays of animatronic yokais and a ninja maze. Perfect for kids and family. 10/10

A fun and immersive cultural theme park that transports you back to the ancient period of Japan. The traditional buildings, costumed staff (feels like NPC) and live ninja and samurai performances create an exciting and educational experience for all ages. You can walk through recreated streets, try old-style games, and even dress up in period costumes. It's well-maintained and the attention to detail is impressive. A great way to learn about Japanese history while having fun. Easy to reach by car and worth spending half a day exploring. Perfect for families!

Lovely theme park displaying life of edo period. There are 2-3 shows as well which you can catch. I liked that the park was calm and quiet. One could easily spend 2-3 hours here. Regarding food, the park has options for ramen, zangi (fried chicken), and soba noodles. The entrance fee is 3300 yen. I reached the park via bus

Here is a clean, simple 3–5 sentence version for you: ⸻ Noboribetsu Date Jidai Village looks very historical, almost like it is 200–300 years old. The buildings, streets, and costumes make you feel like you are really in the old Edo period. It has a strong traditional culture, with ninja shows, samurai performances, and beautiful old-style Japanese scenery. It feels like the place where ninjas were born and trained. This is a very good place to visit if you come to Sapporo or Noboribetsu.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Cape Chikyu, situated at the southern end of Muroran City, is a stunning scenic area featuring a lighthouse and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Perched approximately 120 meters above sea level, it boasts a 310,000 candlepower lighthouse, spacious observatory, hiking trails, and parking facilities. On clear days, visitors can marvel at sights like Mt. Komagatake and Cape Esan from the observatory.
“Earth Cape,” is one of Hokkaido’s most breathtaking natural viewpoints—where the land seems to meet the curvature of the Earth itself. Located in Muroran, it dramatically juts out from the southern tip of the Etomo Peninsula, with 100-meter-high cliffs plunging into the Pacific Ocean. The name “Chikyu” comes from the Ainu word chikep, meaning “cliff,” but in Japanese it poetically translates to “Earth,” giving rise to its celestial nickname. Perched 130 meters above sea level, this white octagonal lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1920. It’s one of Japan’s “50 Great Lighthouses” and part of the country’s civil engineering heritage. 9/13/25 Open for public on Marine Days.

Great viewpoint for the ocean and lighthouse. We visited in mid-October and the lighthouse was closed for renovations. You can climb the open air observation deck and ring a bell, but beware as people line up to constantly ring it loudly and ruin the peaceful view.
Emily K — Google review
Cape Chikyu is definitely worth visiting — the scenery is absolutely stunning, especially on a clear day when you can see far out over the Pacific Ocean. The lighthouse area is clean and well maintained, and the ocean breeze makes it a peaceful place to just pause and take in the view. There were only a few people when I visited, so it felt calm and relaxed. Parking and access were easy, and there was no waiting time at all. The only small downside is that the weather can change quickly, so visibility isn’t always perfect — but when the sky is clear, it’s magical.

Cape Chikyu offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the region, making it a must-visit for anyone in search of natural beauty. The winds can be strong, but they only enhance the sense of openness and awe as you take in the stunning vistas of the coastline and ocean. On a clear, sunny day, the view is absolutely spectacular, with the sparkling sea stretching out to the horizon. Best of all, Cape Chikyu is easily accessible, with free parking and no entrance fee, making it a great spot to visit without any hassle. Whether you’re there to enjoy the view, take photos, or simply feel the wind on your face, this cape provides a refreshing and tranquil escape. For the best experience, be sure to visit on a sunny day when the skies are clear, allowing the beauty of the surroundings to truly shine.

Nestled an hour's drive east of Hakodate, Mount Esan is a verdant volcanic marvel and a prominent natural attraction in southern Hokkaido. The well-maintained trails lead adventurers 618 meters up to the summit, where sulfuric fumes mingle with blooming flora. At its base lies Mizunashi Kaihin Onsen, a unique hot spring featuring two natural pools blending ocean waves and mineral-rich waters along the pristine coastline.
One of the best climbs I've done. Very unique scenery as it is an active volcano. You can smell the rotten eggs getting stronger as you get closer to the peak. The views are breathtaking and the climb is very rewarding. Cool little guest book in a small shrine at the top to sign. The difficulty of this hike from the carpark is 4/10, not too steep although it can get pretty windy and bone chilling in early spring. I highly recommend using a car to get here as there is little to no public transport.

Easy trail and the view is stunning and beautiful!!

This is the place where I had climbed up with my first son on my back in 2007 and I visited again after a decade. Nothing but we had been changed. This is the mountain where I fell in love with Hokkaido. I climbed again with my three sons to let them know the scenery I love. I call it where thee blues are meet-sky, sea, and forest (green is often called blue in Asia).

Gorgeous views and the hike payoff is worth it. You have to hike Esan if you’re in Hakodate. Hikers are friendly too because it’s primarily native Japanese that hike this mountain. Car transport highly recommended.

(Translated by Google) It's close to downtown Hakodate, so I recommend going there. I traveled by motorcycle, and the roads were well maintained and easy to ride. There are Jizo statues erected here and there along the way to the observation deck. (Original) 函館市街地から近隣なので行くのお薦めです。バイクで移動しましたが、道も整備されており走り易い。展望台までの道中の御地蔵様も所々建立されております。

Osorezan Bodaiji Temple

Mentioned on

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Osorezan Bodaiji Temple, nestled in the remote Aomori region of Japan, is a captivating destination that offers a unique blend of spirituality and natural beauty. Known as 'Fear Mountain,' this site draws visitors with its otherworldly landscape reminiscent of the Buddhist afterlife. The journey to Osorezan is an adventure in itself; it's best approached by car due to its rural location, far from convenient stores or public transport options.
This is one of the most holy shrines in Japan. It was set in a geothermally active area with some beautiful bright colors in the water and steam coming out of the ground. It's a nice place to wander around in and enjoy! The lake next to the site is also beautiful and you can enjoy these views and see the radar station on the hill next to it. You can also drive up there and enjoy the view down to the lake!

The type of location that makes you say, “where are we.” This isn’t a spot for your first visit to Japan, but if you’re trying to get off the beaten path, this is for you. Beautiful scenery with the sulfur fields and springs. You can walk all through the complex and see various sites. We spent 90 minutes here and could have stayed longer exploring if the wind wasn’t whipping as badly. Admission is 700¥ for adults and 300¥ for kids. There are (2) female onsen huts and one male on site that are fed by the springs. They look cool, but are primitive and you’ll need to bring everything with you (e.g. towels) if you want to use them. Admission to the onsen hut (I’m reinforcing “hut” here) is included. Interesting note, we saw two dead tenuki on the drive to the temple.

Impressive and peaceful temple complex located atop Mount Osore (恐山). There are a few elements to visit, shown on a walking tour on the information pamphlet, but the frequency of the public transport service makes it a little tricky to see in one hour and not quite enough to drag out to three. Still, definitely worth a visit if in the area; the rugged, moon-like landscape contrasted wonderfully with the autumn leaves.

This is a one of a kind temple. Very special. You’ll see the connection of hell and heaven, how peaceful it is and close to the nature. Definitely worth the drive. You’ll spend 1-2 hours there.

Beautiful mountain temple complex / pilgrimage site founded 1000 years ago by a famous monk. Entrance fee of 700 yen covers the temple itself, and a decent length walking path including multiple places for prayer or to take beautiful photos of the lake and surrounding mountains.

I love coming here. The lake is beautiful and the mountains have an aliens landscape feel to them. The volcanic vents spew sulfur smoke and all you can hear is the wind and your own footsteps. Highly recommend coming here at least once.

A place where to find local products -from vegetables to cookies, apple juice ... - at reasonable price on the road. They also sell amazing soft cream (milk, matcha and a seasonal favor). I tried the pumpkin (kabocha) flavor : super good! It was creamy and not too sweet. Surprising! A must stop on the road.

Michinoeki Oirase Roman Park is a convenient stop for travelers heading to Oirase Gorge or Lake Towada from the Hachinohe side. It serves as a resupply point with various amenities. The roadside station offers a large site resembling a small park, featuring a restaurant serving local gourmet food and Oirase beer, as well as a store specializing in delicious apple sweets.
This stop is a must visit!!! Never forget to buy the Oirase yogurt drink! I promise you'll regret it if you can't try that delicious drink.
