Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Hokkaido Jingu, a Shinto shrine built in 1869, is located in Sapporo and is dedicated to four deities, including Emperor Meiji. It was established around 150 years ago and is considered the most important shrine in the city. The shrine honors three gods, with locals often seen making offerings to them. This relatively youthful shrine stands out amidst Japan's famous shrines and holds historical significance as it guards the pioneering career of Hokkaido.
Beautiful shrine in Hokkaido! I went here in May first week, when the Sakura blossoms were just about to fall off completely, so I managed to get some nice pics. But from what I see of the shrine here in winters, it looks so much more beautiful in snow! Would love to revisit in winters someday!
Arti P — Google review
Really beautiful place. The shrine is all in wood with a traditional design, and the whole area feels very peaceful. It’s well taken care of, and there weren’t too many people, so it was a nice break from the city. Great spot for a quiet stroll or just to enjoy the atmosphere.
Auriane D — Google review
Such a beautiful shrine. You walk through a stunning pathway to get there, and they have tea houses that are super cute. I loved the beauty and the vibe of the whole place. Definitely take pictures.
Shirin M — Google review
It’s so peaceful and glorious shrine. In summer it’s all only green but still very beautiful. It must be prettier in another season 😍 You can walk a lot here, and in Miyashita park there’s a field where i saw lot of students play volleyball 🍃
Citra H — Google review
We went in the summer, scorching but it calms you, with its nature and its long gravel walk. There’s a park surrounding it, one can easily spend 2-3 hours in that area admiring the architecture and nature.
Terence L — Google review
Nice shrine to visit in Sapporo. It was very peaceful and there were lots of trees. You can leave offerings as well. It was very accesible.
Neil C — Google review
It is always an experience on it’s own when visiting a shrine and that also counts for the Hokkaido Jingu. A spiritual place full of traditions. I could collect an ema as a souvenir and also could write one and hang up on the ema “wall” , which always gives me a warm feeling.
Stephan F — Google review
As the main shrine in Hokkaido enshrining 3 pioneer dieties and eventually Meji Emperor himself, its a shrine that you should spend half an afternoon slowly strolling around to soak in the atmosphere and Use ¥100 to get the fortune slips and see what does it say, and for the bad luck, tie it to their racks to cleanse it for a better year ahead, and for those with good, medium or great fortune, bring it home! Overall a historically packed and very chill place. Side track, it has a small tea house offering sweet snacks, ice cream and tea too :)

Sapporo City Maruyama Zoo

Mentioned on
40 lists
Zoo
Zoos & Aquariums
Sapporo City Maruyama Zoo is a top destination for animal lovers, offering an up-close experience with a variety of wildlife. As the tenth-largest zoo in Japan, it prides itself on providing naturalistic enclosures for its animals. Visitors can observe polar bears, red pandas, penguins, reptiles, and many other creatures in habitats that closely resemble their natural environments.
One of the best zoos I've ever visited! The zoo grounds is immense and never feel cramped. Most of the animals have large enclosures with indoor and outdoor spaces, so they can roam around during different seasons and not feel trapped. We saw a large assortment of animals here (birds are a bit lackluster but that's ok. There's a different place for that). The polar bear was hiding when we visited and no hippo! Don't know what happened to it. The zoo restaurant is not bad too! Overall it's an excellent place to visit! The zoo is open air and on an incline since this is near the mountain so you have to come prepared for that.
Jeff M — Google review
We went in with the intention to just quickly do a self animal tour but when we went in, we caught ourselves in awe with all these beautiful creatures that share the same land as us. We saw animals that we would never have gotten a chance to see in America. Thank you for having such beautiful animals to show us.
Sok K — Google review
I went to this zoo on a Thursday in late October. I've heard this is the off-season for Sapporo tourism, which may explain why the missing polar bears and a few other exhibits. Even though I was disappointed about the lack of the polar bears, it was okay. The only other sadly disappointment was seeing one of the red pandas pace with obvious mental illness. The tigers, lions, snow leopards were beautiful, and there were quite a few other great exhibits. Keep in mind that if you are nearsighted and have glasses, then your glasses will fog up and you will have problems seeing exhibits in the humidified areas. I was fortunate to have brought my defogging glasses.
Mark Z — Google review
I visited Maruyama Zoo in Sapporo recently. The place is clean and well-organized, and there’s a good variety of animals to see. Some enclosures are more spacious than others, but overall the animals seemed well taken care of. It’s a nice spot for families or a quiet afternoon walk. Not too big, so you can see everything in a couple of hours. Worth a visit if you’re nearby, but don’t expect anything too extraordinary.
Mohammed ج — Google review
This zoo needs a lot of tender care. We visited on a Tuesday afternoon, only very few people or visitors were here! But we do see some very young school kids here to have their field day! Even this zoo doesn’t have lots of animals, all the animals they have are in good condition and health. But there are many, I mean many empty stalls without any animals. That makes the zoo looked very sad. The animal that impressed me the most is the tiger. It looks magnificent The polar bear also looks very good. Best wishes to this zoo and the animals!
Steven C — Google review
Pretty good zoo with variety of animals and good space to walk around. However, it can be really hot during summer and some animals will hide avoiding the heat. We saw most of them except the polar bear that they didn’t come out at all as too much heat ytd. Closing time is a bit too soon, 4:30 pm esp during summer though. Feel bad for some birds that didn’t seem to have much space compared to their size and no place to fly at all. Overall with visiting for us, we spent approximately 4:30 hrs there.
Sukhumarn ( — Google review
Takes about 4 hours to see all the animals. We enjoyed the reptile museum the most. We were amazed how clean and well maintained the zoo was. We actively saw many zoo staff clean the cages and feed the animals.
Maor A — Google review
I visited Maruyama Zoo (円山動物園) in Sapporo during the winter, when everything was covered in white snow. The scenery was beautiful and felt like stepping into another world. Despite the cold weather, all the animals looked healthy and well-cared for, which shows how dedicated the staff are. It was also my first time ever seeing a polar bear, seal, and penguin in real life — such an amazing and memorable experience! My visit was truly enjoyable and left a strong impression on me. I hope to return again someday, perhaps in the summer or autumn, to see the zoo in a different season. Definitely worth a visit if you're ever in Sapporo!

Mt. Okura Ski Jump Stadium (Ōkurayama-Schanze)

Mentioned on
+20 other lists
Athletic field
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled on the slopes of Mt. Okura, the Mt. Okura Ski Jump Stadium, also known as Ōkurayama-Schanze, is a remarkable site that once hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics. This iconic ski jump venue offers visitors an exhilarating experience with its impressive height of over 133 meters. A scenic chairlift ride whisks you to the top, where breathtaking panoramic views of Sapporo and its surrounding landscapes await.
I was taking the creaky chairlift to the top of the Mt. Okura Ski Jump, the snow lightly falling on my lap, when I turned around and took a look at the city. One of the most beautiful views my retinas have ever been blessed to see. You get a vast view of the city from the top, the Sapporo skyline popping out like little legos out of the ground. I felt like I was in a snow globe. These kinds of views really have me pondering my place in the world and in the universe. What does it all really mean? There is a cafe at the top to get a coffee or some snacks, along with a direct view of the ski jump that hosted the Olympics back in 1972. You get the vantage point the skiers get when they are about to drop in. I got the heebie-jeebies just thinking about having to do that. I don’t want any of that smoke. They built different. When in Sapporo, you gotta come here to gain some perspective. IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__
Johnny N — Google review
if you have never seen a ski jump place, gotta give it a try. You go up to the top by the ski lift which is fun. At the top, you can feel how high and steep the ski jump thing is. Also you can view the whole Sapporo City. You can grab beer, ice cream, tea, etc and enjoy the view. There is a Sapporo Olympic museum too. You can buy a ticket to see both at a discounted price.
Jin L — Google review
This was an unexpected absolute thrill. Do yourself a favour and find time to visit this iconic ski stadium. The view from the top was breathtaking. We had the added bonus of seeing some skiers taking to the slope for ski jump practice - without snow. This is well worth the visit and very easy to navigate with train and bus from Sapporo. Just don’t miss the last bus at 4.30pm.
Cheryl W — Google review
Really amazing and interesting. Great view at the top and coming down on the chair lift. You can walk up. There is a side track for people keen.
Gavin W — Google review
Thrill and views! 🏔️ Mt. Okura Ski Jump Stadium offers an adrenaline rush and stunning Sapporo cityscapes. A must-visit for ski jump fans and anyone seeking panoramic adventure 😊
Rachmad B — Google review
This place offer perfect view of Sapporo city. It has a small ice cream shop up there. What a great experience eating ice cream with snow falling and the white Sapporo view.
Kai T — Google review
The site of the Olympic Ski Jump and one takes the chairlift up to the top of the station. Coincidentally (or not) there was a skier practicing off the jump! Very nice souvenir shop with some original items.
Melanie B — Google review
One of the cooler experiences I’ve had in Sapporo, the views of the city are beautiful and the size of the ski jump is breath taking. Unfortunately the Olympic museum is closed until March 2023 for renovations. Absolutely worth the trip, we took a taxi because it would have been about double as long a trip from the hotel to actually arrive at the ski jump. The cafe had curry breads and meat pastries that were good, even if they were warmed in the microwave.

Mt. Moiwa

Mountain peak
Sights & Landmarks
Mt. Moiwa is a renowned peak in Sapporo, offering breathtaking nighttime panoramas of the city and Ishikari Bay. Visitors can ascend to the summit via a cable car or the Mt. Moiwa sightseeing expressway, followed by a ride on the unique Morris Car. The mountain is popular among locals for its accessibility and features five lightly climbed trails ranging from 2.4km to 4.5km in length.
Coming up at dusk, the 2 sections of ropeway are quite good, when the night falls, astonishing views show! So suggest no need to go up early,
Edward T — Google review
It's ok. I give this attraction 3 stars because you never really know if you would have the thick fogs blocking the scenery. We got unlucky when we went up and because our itinerary was tight, couldn't afford to use the coupon on another night. It was icy cold at the top and nothing to see but we made our own fun.
Jeff M — Google review
Nice place to view Sapporo. It is possible to drive up, but need to pay a small fee, which is less than the ropeway. Driving and the ropeway do not lead you to the top, so you’ll either need to take a paid mini cable car or hike up. The hike is generally easy and can be completed quite quickly.
Xunliang L — Google review
If you want to go here, make it in midafternoon and stay for about an hour after sunset to see the great view of Sapporo without the lights aa well as the dark city illuminated by a bevy of colors.
Jaja L — Google review
We went up at about 4.20pm to try to catch the sunset. It became rather cloudy, so the clouds ended up blocking the sunset. The night view was great but you had to stay for quite a while for the sky to darken. A lot of people were still coming up the ropeway at 6pm when we were heading off, so it seemed like the night view was way more popular than the sunset view. Heads up that by 530/545pm, you will need to queue to take the ropeway down.
Serene L — Google review
23rd August 2026 Must visit Iconic View Point I hike up with my husband and had a wonderful 1.5hrs Up Up Up trail with nature & greens Upon arrival there were clean toilet at the Main station building. A cafe & a restaurant as well as souvenir shop Its clean and well organised place. We bough souvenir, had coffee and some pastry while wait for night fall Unfortunately today was a cloudy day and it was foggy and a bit windy Patience paid as there was a clear glimpse of the view from view point of Sapporo We stay until 7:30pm then went down to our surprise was we had a good 3 mins view as we take the last cable car down Memorable time created if you are thankful
Maria W — Google review
Great view over the city. The ropeway is in 2 stages, with change in the middle to the very top. Nice outside observatory platform. Great souvenir shop - restaurant a bit boring
Roland Z — Google review
Moiwayama Mountain offers an incredible view over Sapporo, especially around sunset. To get to the top, head to the cable car entrance, buy your ticket, and take the first cable car followed by another small train-like lift. The whole journey doesn’t take too long, and the view at the top is absolutely worth it. It gets quite chilly up there, even in summer, so bring an extra layer. There’s also a restaurant at the summit, but you’ll need to book several weeks in advance. Just be prepared for a bit of a queue when heading back down after sunset. Would definitely recommend it.

I've been here multiple times and it's always beautiful. You can walk, use the sightseeing boat, swanboats, paddle boats etc. They all cost between 1000-2000 yen per 30mins to 1 hour. Perfect place to rest with family or even alone. Though make sure to bring CASH!! All the restaurant use cash expect for 1 or 2 store. There's an ATM on the map nearby but closes at 12pm. Also all the shops closes by 1600 and 1700

Lake Shikotsu, a stop between 2 cities! Driving from Sapporo to Noboribetsu isn’t that long, about an hour and a half, or so I thought! (Read the bottom part) so we decided to make a stopover at Lake Shitose! About half way between Sapporo & Noboribetsu. What an amazing destination & a total favourite with both locals & tourists alike! They have this humongous Tourist Information Center, a whole bunch of very popular restaurants, and an activity Center, can rent canoes and all kind of other lake related stuff! My lady wanted to do the “Swan Ride” on the lake, but unfortunately closed as the water was a tad choppy! A lovely park for a nice stroll and of course a promenade, to wander along! Enjoyable for a 90 minute layover so to speak! Certainly worth it! too #googlemaps! Please make sure you update your navigation, the road to get out from there, was closed adding another 60 minute driving! Although the scenery was lovely but still! 😡 #sapporo #Japantravels #MarketAdventures #gourmettravels #selfdrivingholidays #hokkaido #noboribetsu #sapporo #lakeshikotsu

Lake Shikotsu is truly a natural wonder. Surrounded by lush greenery and rolling forested mountains, the scenery feels both peaceful and vibrant. The lake itself is remarkably clean, with crystal-clear water that shimmers beautifully under the sunlight. There’s a refreshing moisture in the air that makes every breath feel crisp and pure, almost like nature’s own air spa. What makes Lake Shikotsu so amazing is its serene beauty combined with its untouched atmosphere. The calm surface of the water reflects the surrounding green hills, creating postcard-like views in every direction. Whether walking along the lakeside, taking a boat out, or simply sitting by the shore, it’s easy to feel relaxed and recharged here. Overall, Lake Shikotsu is one of Hokkaido’s most beautiful natural spots—green, clean, and full of life. A perfect escape for anyone who loves pure nature and breathtaking landscapes.
Min M — Google review
Spectacular lake view surrounded by interesting volcanoes. I suggest coming in autumn when most of the leaves are yellow and red, which will enhance the experience. You can go stand up paddle boarding and pedal boating on the lakes. On a clear day, the reflections of the clouds and mountains in the water is incredible. When you take photos of the fish, the reflection makes it look like the fish are swimming in the clouds. Perfect for any occasion, this place is a must come.

Beautiful stunning view from the mountain and the lake is so clear when seeing with the sun. And sparkling in the same time. The wind is strong but it give you the romantic good vibe

I visited Lake Shikotsu and it was a very nice experience overall. The lake is known for its beautifully clear water and stunning scenic views, and it definitely lived up to its reputation in that regard. The natural surroundings are peaceful and make for a relaxing atmosphere — great for taking a walk or just enjoying the scenery. There are a few things to see and do around the lake area — you can explore the walking paths, visit the small shops and cafés nearby, or take a sightseeing boat ride on the lake. The views of the mountains reflecting on the water are truly beautiful, especially on a clear day. That said, the area itself is relatively small, so depending on what you’re looking for, it may be more of a short visit than a full-day activity. It’s great if you want to appreciate nature and take some nice photos, but there aren’t a huge number of attractions or activities beyond the lake itself. Overall, Lake Shikotsu is worth a visit if you’re in the area and want to enjoy some beautiful natural scenery. It’s a nice, calm place to take a break from the city and soak in the views.

If you're looking for a delightful mix of shopping, dining, and entertainment, make your way to Sea Station Puratto Seaport Market near Tomakomai Port. This vibrant multi-purpose facility is a treasure trove of local products, souvenirs, and crafts that showcase the region's charm. With an array of restaurants serving up delicious regional cuisine—especially seafood—you'll find plenty to satisfy your palate.
Interesting and great! Live the vibes ! ! Price is good too!

Although it’s just a small market. It worth to visit. Price is cheaper than other markets in sapporo city. The seafood and fruit are fresh.
E123 4 — Google review
Highly recommended to visit this market. We ordered Kaisen don. Tomakomai specialty is hokki don. Uni is also priced relatively reasonably but price is depending on the seasonal rate. 🍈 also recommend to buy one big melon (1000 yen for small size and 2000 yen for medium size whole melon). You can request the shopkeeper to cut for you if you buy whole. We chose to ate half on the spot and take away half of melon for next day consumption. The melon is really juicy and sweet!
Yiying W — Google review
Lots of restaurants to choose from. Beside the seafood, they also sell fruits and vegtables here. The market isn't very big, so I think it's better to come here for food.
Jasmin F — Google review
Head straight here once you pick up your rental car from CTS. This is the best seafood places closest to the airport. For oysters, I highly recommend the かき小屋海の駅. Amazing oysters at irresistible prices. Adorable and friendly family run business in this seaside town south of New Chitose. Lots of free parking spaces.
Speed R — Google review
Good as a lunch place between Noboribetsu and Chitose, and a good place to shop if you want to bring some fresh veggies and fruits back home. Dried goods available too though not as much variety as other seafood markets we went to.
Travellerelf — Google review
Best place to checkout local seafood ingredients as well as very delicious foods from restaurants within the market. Highly recommended to visit if you have a way of transportation to get here!

Love it! There’s too many unique Omiyage to buy in these markets 😂 Fresh seafood with reasonable price to enjoy something that normally costs you A LOT.

Upopoy (National Ainu Museum and Park)

Mentioned on

National museum
Museums
The Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park is an open-air cultural museum located in Hokkaido, showcasing a replicated village and traditional folk dances of the Ainu people. The expansive site contains numerous well-maintained buildings, offering visitors a chance to learn about this indigenous group. The museum's 15-minute video on Ainu history is informative and easy to understand.
The first time I heard about the Ainu people was about 2 years ago. Over time, I got more information and when I planned to travel to Hokkaido, I just couldn’t miss visiting the Upopoy National Ainu Museum. There are a few ways to reach the place. I took a train from Sapporo station to Shiraoi station, which took me about an hour.
It’s better to dedicate a whole day to exploring the whole Museum complex and park and dive deeper into the Ainu culture. You have a chance to observe traditional Ainu buildings, try to wear traditional Ainu clothes, learn their language or attend the craft workshops. There’s also the Cultural Exchange Hall, where you can watch a short film about Ainu culture. Take some time to walk around the park to enjoy the nature and the lake landscape. Don’t worry about the tickets, you can buy them at the ticket desk or ticket vending machine at the entrance. The place is highly recommended for visiting.
Sergey К — Google review
Highly recommend. The train to Shiraoi is covered under the JR rail pass, so we didn't have to pay separate for transportation. We chose to go here over the koten village more north as its much more accessible, especially with time constraints. Everyone was extremely friendly and we were actively included in experiences. There are several love demonstrations throughout the day and effort was put into English translations for for displays (staff was also very kind and went out of their way for us in speaking english/ using translating apps) to make sure we understood everything.
Elizabeth S — Google review
Upopoy is great fun and educational. It combines traditional museums with experiences including carving, music, dance and embroidery to name a few. The staff is kind and there seem to be limited foreigners to visit. It can be difficult to get to with public transportation but it is worth a visit.
Sobren15 — Google review
Great place to learn about the Ainu people thru exhibits and cultural performances. The museum building itself is impressive. Lake Poroto is inside the museum grounds, so you can take a calming walk along the lake shore. There are also dining options and gift shops with great products.
Alvin D — Google review
I visited on the Cultural day so it was free!!! I didn’t expect to get free access but seems a lucky day indeed. The artists were good at reflecting the Ainu culture through costumes, dances, musical instruments & so many things. It is better if you go there in the morning. Check the JR schedule & make plans ahead of visiting there otherwise you’ve to wait long time for the train. Definitely a place worth visiting.
Md.Ishtiak R — Google review
We found this museum to be truly exceptional. It not only provides a lot of knowledge about the Ainu and their past and present culture but is is also very interactive and immersive. We saw a dance and music show in the grand hall that was very impressive and loved walking the reconstructed Ainu houses. When looking for English books on Ainu, two ladies in the library went out of their way to help us. Also there are numerous good eating options and two sizeable gift shops.
Ingo ( — Google review
Absolutely stunning setting, expertly crafted exhibits that were informative, with a powerful point of view and really enriched my understanding of the culture. I only wish I'd budgeted more time for this. Its convience minutes away from a JR station made it easy to slot into my itinerary as quicker mid-morning stop on my way to catch the Shinkensen in Hakodate.
Craig J — Google review
Highly recommend to visit this museum if you are around Hokkaido. It provides good explanation about the Ainu's culture and way of living. There's some performance as well inside the traditional house and it has beautiful lake with amazing view especially during sunset..

Noboribetsu Jigokudani Valley

Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Noboribetsu Jigokudani Valley is a dramatic crater featuring boiling sulfuric hot springs, volcanic steam plumes, and hiking paths. It's part of the tourist hotspot of Jigokudani and houses the popular hot spring resort 'Noboribetsu Onsen,' known for its nine kinds of hot springs.
The scenery here is quite unique—at first glance, it looks like a quarry, but it’s actually a natural mineral area. The sulfur smell is noticeable, adding to the experience. The landscape is fascinating, with steam vents and striking colors created by the minerals. There are several walking paths that let you explore and enjoy the surrounding nature at your own pace. Parking is conveniently located nearby, with a small fee. Clean restrooms. There’s a souvenir shop too. It’s a great spot for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone interested in geology or unusual landscapes. Definitely worth a visit for something different and memorable.
Pechaporn P — Google review
Hell Valley is a unique experience. A day trip from Sapporo, beautiful scenery and a visit to an active volcano area. Steam rises out of the cracks and holes. You can see the water boiling! I had limited time here but well worth the experience! There’s a lot more to do and see in this area and will return for more adventures! The smell of sulfur is strong in some areas but there was a nice breeze that kept it from being too intense. Parking was not an issue as I visited off peak time. Several lots are available though for a fee.
Joy J — Google review
The volcanic landscape feels otherworldly — steam rising from the earth, sulfur smells in the air, and colorful rock formations everywhere. It’s a truly unique experience and easy to explore on foot. A must-visit spot in Hokkaido for nature and photography lovers!
Ricardo S — Google review
This is a great opportunity to see volcano crater up close. The paths around the crater were very easy to walk on. Not only do you get to see the craters up close, the view was stunning with the autumn leaves in the background. The walk down to the natural foot bath was a bit more demanding. We saw many people struggling up the steep path afterwards. Just a tip that you can actually avoid that by just following the path out to the main road, which loops back to the start and is a much easier and more gentle walk up. While there wasn’t a proper pavement for pedestrians, the cars were considerate and we never felt unsafe walking on the road.
Casey C — Google review
I visited Noboribetsu Jigokudani Valley for the first time at the beginning of winter around 5 p.m. There were still many travelers. The weather was very cold, and the strong smell of natural gas filled the air. The scenery was stunning — a true wonder of nature with steam rising from the ground. The sunset made the atmosphere even more magical. Parking costs 500 yen for a personal car. Toilets are available, but no Wi-Fi service here.
Sierra C — Google review
We visited Noboribetsu Hell Valley (Jigokudani) as part of an organized bus tour, and it was a great stop. Around 30–60 minutes is enough to walk the wooden paths, take photos, and enjoy the unique volcanic scenery. The view of the steaming rocks and colourful ground is truly impressive and gives a good sense of Hokkaido’s geothermal nature. As the name suggests, there’s a strong sulfur smell in the air, it’s natural and part of the experience, but some people might find it a bit intense. Visiting with a tour is very convenient since parking can be limited and the area fits well as a short stop between other sights. Definitely worth seeing once. It feels like standing on another planet or in one of the old Power Rangers Sets.
Ivo V — Google review
Jigoku Dani (Hell Valley) is the place to visit to get up close to an active volcano with sulphuric acid permeating the air. The area is an easy hike across the colourful autumn forest. Our family thoroughly enjoyed this one day visit to see an active volcano!

So surreal to see this in real life! We were very lucky to see this beautiful scenery in the peak of autumn, where all the trees are in the nice muted shades of red, orange and yellow! 🍁 super pretty! My friends who saw my pictures thought it was AI because of how surreal it looks 😂

Noboribetsu Bear Park is a zoo that features around 70 brown bears in enclosures designed to mimic their natural habitats. The park offers environmental enrichments to ensure the well-being of the bears. Visitors can reach the park by taking a ropeway gondola from Sanroku Station in Noboribetsu Hot Spring Town, with a free shuttle bus available for convenience.
For English speakers. Great place to see the bears in Hokkaido. You can feed them some snacks as well as see events throughout the day. You will need to take the Gondola cable car up which is included in the price. About 7 mins ride up. 3000 yen for adults and 1500 yen for kids in elementary school. You need about 2-3 hours but nothing more, unless you want to keep watching the bears. There is a bear museum to look at although many of the sign are not in English. All the events held there are only spoken in Japanese as well. There is Ainu village you can also look at at the top past the bear museum. None of the signs are in English except for some signs about taking off shoes. All in all grear place to see some bears and view from the top is great.
Jonathan K — Google review
Unique attraction nestled on a mountaintop in Hokkaido, accessible by ropeway with scenic views along the way. The park houses many Ezo brown bears and you can observe them up close in a safe environment. Watching them catch snacks thrown by visitors is both entertaining and adorable. There's also a small museum and a traditional Ainu cultural exhibit. While the facilities are a bit dated, it’s still a great spot for families and animal lovers. A memorable visit with great views and cute bears!
Peng C — Google review
It was a pleasant day trip to visit. Overall, this park was clean and bears were well cared for. But,I still prefer to see this animals to remain wild instead of being in captivity. A few of them seem to be old and it made me sad.
Mei S — Google review
I wish I would read reviews of this place before going there. Awful. My husband said he hasn’t been depressed like this for so long. It is indeed like a prison not a park for bears. If you can’t set them free already, please invest money that we paid for the tickets to make this cages bearable for bears - bigger, newer, with greenery. Let “park” staff feed them themselves. No need to throw out food at them - awful awful “entertainment”. We are in 21st century, no need to behave like barbarians. No vegetation, small spaces, bears look depressed too. Cable car works smoothly - provide with a beautiful view of the Noboribetsu nature, and the view of the lake is beautiful. But the minute the cable car ends its route nothing good is there. I feel ashamed of myself for participating in such a cruel act of feeding them. I should have just left the place immediately. Tons of dead bear mommies as a museum also felt awful. I would like to believe that they do study these bears for the benefit of these species… We as humans do harm nature in different ways. This place felt like shameless harm to these amazing animals. I love Japan and Japanese culture so much - so respectful to everyone, mindful of others. well these big species are alive they deserve respect too. We as humans can do better.
Anna A — Google review
It has a nice tram ride. The scenery is amazing at the top. There is a museum inside where you can learn a lot about the bears and local people. There are lots of little spots to take photos. There is a nice Cafe inside where you can relax and get coffee and some nice food.

Went here while staying in norobetsu.was very good value including the gondola ride for the views alone . The bear park was amazing and well worth it . Very well organised and clean . Even worth feeding the bears with bought bear small ball biscuits..... Very genuine place ...
Paul B — Google review
Gondola ride was the only positive experience. The bears looked very miserable & were being freely feed dried nuggets by tourists, who were trying to elicit reactions from the poor animals as entertainment. There are not any conditions in which any animals should be held… quite the sad sight. Smell was deathly - had me googling ways to try to break these animals out of their enclosures. Gondola was the only positive experience. Would not recommend.

Noboribetsu Date Jidai Village is not your typical theme park. Instead of roller coasters and cartoon characters, this park focuses on Edo-period history, featuring traditional performances, food, and games. The village showcases Edo period-style buildings such as a daimyo residence, merchant shops, and commoners' dwellings.
This is the best experience for ninja culture lovers. The actors/ staff were very interactive and entertaining, as well as the various shows and displays. There are also amazing displays of animatronic yokais and a ninja maze. Perfect for kids and family. 10/10

A fun and immersive cultural theme park that transports you back to the ancient period of Japan. The traditional buildings, costumed staff (feels like NPC) and live ninja and samurai performances create an exciting and educational experience for all ages. You can walk through recreated streets, try old-style games, and even dress up in period costumes. It's well-maintained and the attention to detail is impressive. A great way to learn about Japanese history while having fun. Easy to reach by car and worth spending half a day exploring. Perfect for families!
Peng C — Google review
Lovely theme park displaying life of edo period. There are 2-3 shows as well which you can catch. I liked that the park was calm and quiet. One could easily spend 2-3 hours here. Regarding food, the park has options for ramen, zangi (fried chicken), and soba noodles. The entrance fee is 3300 yen. I reached the park via bus

Here is a clean, simple 3–5 sentence version for you: ⸻ Noboribetsu Date Jidai Village looks very historical, almost like it is 200–300 years old. The buildings, streets, and costumes make you feel like you are really in the old Edo period. It has a strong traditional culture, with ninja shows, samurai performances, and beautiful old-style Japanese scenery. It feels like the place where ninjas were born and trained. This is a very good place to visit if you come to Sapporo or Noboribetsu.

Cape Chikyu, situated at the southern end of Muroran City, is a stunning scenic area featuring a lighthouse and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Perched approximately 120 meters above sea level, it boasts a 310,000 candlepower lighthouse, spacious observatory, hiking trails, and parking facilities. On clear days, visitors can marvel at sights like Mt. Komagatake and Cape Esan from the observatory.
“Earth Cape,” is one of Hokkaido’s most breathtaking natural viewpoints—where the land seems to meet the curvature of the Earth itself. Located in Muroran, it dramatically juts out from the southern tip of the Etomo Peninsula, with 100-meter-high cliffs plunging into the Pacific Ocean. The name “Chikyu” comes from the Ainu word chikep, meaning “cliff,” but in Japanese it poetically translates to “Earth,” giving rise to its celestial nickname. Perched 130 meters above sea level, this white octagonal lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1920. It’s one of Japan’s “50 Great Lighthouses” and part of the country’s civil engineering heritage. 9/13/25 Open for public on Marine Days.

Great viewpoint for the ocean and lighthouse. We visited in mid-October and the lighthouse was closed for renovations. You can climb the open air observation deck and ring a bell, but beware as people line up to constantly ring it loudly and ruin the peaceful view.
Emily K — Google review
Cape Chikyu is definitely worth visiting — the scenery is absolutely stunning, especially on a clear day when you can see far out over the Pacific Ocean. The lighthouse area is clean and well maintained, and the ocean breeze makes it a peaceful place to just pause and take in the view. There were only a few people when I visited, so it felt calm and relaxed. Parking and access were easy, and there was no waiting time at all. The only small downside is that the weather can change quickly, so visibility isn’t always perfect — but when the sky is clear, it’s magical.

Cape Chikyu offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the region, making it a must-visit for anyone in search of natural beauty. The winds can be strong, but they only enhance the sense of openness and awe as you take in the stunning vistas of the coastline and ocean. On a clear, sunny day, the view is absolutely spectacular, with the sparkling sea stretching out to the horizon. Best of all, Cape Chikyu is easily accessible, with free parking and no entrance fee, making it a great spot to visit without any hassle. Whether you’re there to enjoy the view, take photos, or simply feel the wind on your face, this cape provides a refreshing and tranquil escape. For the best experience, be sure to visit on a sunny day when the skies are clear, allowing the beauty of the surroundings to truly shine.

Nestled an hour's drive east of Hakodate, Mount Esan is a verdant volcanic marvel and a prominent natural attraction in southern Hokkaido. The well-maintained trails lead adventurers 618 meters up to the summit, where sulfuric fumes mingle with blooming flora. At its base lies Mizunashi Kaihin Onsen, a unique hot spring featuring two natural pools blending ocean waves and mineral-rich waters along the pristine coastline.
One of the best climbs I've done. Very unique scenery as it is an active volcano. You can smell the rotten eggs getting stronger as you get closer to the peak. The views are breathtaking and the climb is very rewarding. Cool little guest book in a small shrine at the top to sign. The difficulty of this hike from the carpark is 4/10, not too steep although it can get pretty windy and bone chilling in early spring. I highly recommend using a car to get here as there is little to no public transport.

Osorezan Bodaiji Temple, nestled in the remote Aomori region of Japan, is a captivating destination that offers a unique blend of spirituality and natural beauty. Known as 'Fear Mountain,' this site draws visitors with its otherworldly landscape reminiscent of the Buddhist afterlife. The journey to Osorezan is an adventure in itself; it's best approached by car due to its rural location, far from convenient stores or public transport options.
This is one of the most holy shrines in Japan. It was set in a geothermally active area with some beautiful bright colors in the water and steam coming out of the ground. It's a nice place to wander around in and enjoy! The lake next to the site is also beautiful and you can enjoy these views and see the radar station on the hill next to it. You can also drive up there and enjoy the view down to the lake!

The type of location that makes you say, “where are we.” This isn’t a spot for your first visit to Japan, but if you’re trying to get off the beaten path, this is for you. Beautiful scenery with the sulfur fields and springs. You can walk all through the complex and see various sites. We spent 90 minutes here and could have stayed longer exploring if the wind wasn’t whipping as badly. Admission is 700¥ for adults and 300¥ for kids. There are (2) female onsen huts and one male on site that are fed by the springs. They look cool, but are primitive and you’ll need to bring everything with you (e.g. towels) if you want to use them. Admission to the onsen hut (I’m reinforcing “hut” here) is included. Interesting note, we saw two dead tenuki on the drive to the temple.

Impressive and peaceful temple complex located atop Mount Osore (恐山). There are a few elements to visit, shown on a walking tour on the information pamphlet, but the frequency of the public transport service makes it a little tricky to see in one hour and not quite enough to drag out to three. Still, definitely worth a visit if in the area; the rugged, moon-like landscape contrasted wonderfully with the autumn leaves.

A place where to find local products -from vegetables to cookies, apple juice ... - at reasonable price on the road. They also sell amazing soft cream (milk, matcha and a seasonal favor). I tried the pumpkin (kabocha) flavor : super good! It was creamy and not too sweet. Surprising! A must stop on the road.

Science museum
The Misawa Aviation Science Museum charges 510 yen for entry to its indoor displays, while outside access is free. The museum showcases the fascinating history of aviation in Aomori and features exhibits related to aircraft. It's a great place for aviation enthusiasts as well as those interested in learning more about the world of flight. Visitors can easily spend half a day here enjoying everything on display, including taking quick flights with car and plane.
This museum is so much fun and great for people of all ages. They have many different interactive areas, and a lot of opportunities to learn. The Zipline thing was so much fun, and you can even do a flight simulator. All of the interactive areas were covered in the cost of the ticket, which was amazing. There's an ice cream truck outside, which we highly recommend.

Totally worth the experience. Lots of things to do. Easily should set aside 2 hours to really fully explore the inside activities and walk about the parked live sides airplanes outside.
Sakthi B — Google review
Wow an amazing place to take the family! Amazing you can get right up and close with historic planes from japans history in aviation! Many examples i have never seen and i really enjoyed this experience i rate it as a must do for anyone who's into planes! The fighter jets outside i have never been so close to such examples! Amazing

I went to visit an exhibit at the museum but explored a bit outside of that as well. The shop is an overpriced tourist trap, but that's to be expected of any museum shop. The planes on exhibit were set up so you could get close to them or climb up a short staircase to a small walkway and look at them from above. Much better place for children to have fun at than adults, but not horrible.
Enzo B — Google review
Fantastic! Perfect place for kids and adults. Lots of interactive activities. There’s a free phone with a direct line to call for a taxi and they speak English. Our favorite activity was the flight stimulation machine. It felt so real to be flying.
Liz P — Google review
Great day out for the family. Museum is not large but still has lots of interactive things to do for children and adults. There are play areas and aeroplanes to explore outside, which you can do for free. Food options are not great so I'd bring something or go elsewhere. Will definitely visit again if we have a chance.
Emily E — Google review
This is a great little museum to visit if you are in the vicinity of the Misawa Airport and an aviation enthusiast. Besides the actual plane models exhibited and the story behind iconic planes such as Miss Veedol (first plane that flew non-stop over the Pacific Ocean), there are also some experiences/simulators and areas that explain science aimed for families/kids.
Ben H — Google review
Very cool museum with lots of aircrafts inside. If you like aircrafts, don't think twice, you'll love this place 👍 There is a free bus shuttle from Misawa Station called "Gurutto Bus (ぐるっとバス)" which schedule can be found online by googling the name

The Towada Art Center is an avant-garde museum showcasing contemporary art and featuring quirky outdoor installations, as well as a complex of galleries. It's a great family-friendly destination in the area, with impressive blue LED light displays during winter that need to be seen in person for full appreciation. The museum hosts diverse artists from around the globe, offering amusing works for those who enjoy humorous art pieces. However, public transportation may not be very convenient or time-efficient; driving oneself would be more ideal.
The sculpture out there are amazing, and the indoor exhibitions are brilliant as well. They provide audio tour guide without extra charge. They also got a brochure to introduce the artworks and map briefly.

I really like this museum. The aunty jump scared me a little. There are plenty of art pieces outside the museum and also around the area but pleas don’t hesitate to pay to see what’s inside. The experience is not the same as only seeing the photo reviewed. It was an amazing art center!!!!!!!

A highly recommend place to visit. The exhibits inside are great and is detailed annotated with multi language hearing aim. Definitely needed to bring along with the map that recommending the route of your tour. The excellence of this art center is it's exhibits extended to the outdoor and to the park at the opposite street. A large free carpark also convenience for the visitor.

The museum offers a lovely experience, with both impressive indoor and outdoor collections that can easily take over two hours to explore. While the city itself is small and has limited attractions, driving there is recommended as it’s more convenient than using public transportation.

A bunch of large-scale installation art pieces by internationally known artists. Really unique space. Larger collection than I thought before entering the museum. Some artworks are also outdoors. Spent a few hours here. Majority of the gallery spaces and the cafe were ground-level. I noticed a wheel-chair user visiting the museum.

Do make a trip here if you are in Aomori. Worth 2hrs of your time. Be amazed.
Vince C — Google review
I had checked a few months in advance and noted that the museum is closed only on Mondays, so I planned my itinerary accordingly. We visited on a Tuesday and were disappointed to find that it was closed, and several other visitors were let down as well. I checked the website again on the spot and saw that it had been updated to show it was closed that day. I have since learned to reconfirm key information closer to the travel date to avoid similar situations. The whimsical sculptures surrounding the museum were still fun to explore, nonetheless.

Tanesashi Coast, located near the city center, is a natural wonder offering various attractions such as singing sand, vast grassy plains with diverse flora, and a walking trail along the coastline. Designated as part of Sanriku Fukko National Park after the Great East Japan Earthquake, it contributes to the region's reconstruction.
There is a lovely beach, and a coastal train near the shrine. You can spend a whole morning enjoying the natural coastal walk and the sights. Along the way, you will be treated with sweeping views of the sea, fields of flowers and coastal views.

After we checked into our rooms at Pansion Benkei Hotel, my sister drive us to Tanesashi Coast to see the coastline on the Pacific Ocean. I remember I was at Tanesashi Coast here in May 2016 with my younger sister and her husband. I remember that on the particular, the waves were raging and the wind very strong. We walk up to observation deck, called Ashigezaki Observatory, once was a military watchtower during the time of war. From atop this hill, you can see a large part of Tanesashi coastal, plus some great views of the Pacific. The watchtower itself is really nice to look at too. We took a leisurely walk enjoying seeing the waves and the tall trees. It is great place to go hiking here...

Comfortable walk, you can begin your journey from Okuki Station and walk back along the Michinoku trail towards Same Station. There are many buses from downtown Hachinohe to Same Station, and there is also a Umineko shuttle bus that goes between Same Station and Takesashi Station. Train timings are inconvenient, so please consider taking the bus instead.

This place is big and has lots of things to explore! This place is perfect for a picnic but just make sure it isn't windy. You can go towards the water but you can't climb on the rocks, there is a path that goes through a small camping ground and stretches for quite a bit. Beautiful walk. Lots of people usually, very lively. Bathrooms and vending machines are here too.

The center sees around 3 million visitors annually and is known for its diverse selection of seafood products.
Great place to shop and dine! All varieties of seafood as well as local souvenirs. Enjoyed the reasonable priced food and bbq! Great place to be!

A local market that you can find a series of freshly sea food, nice Japanese sake, wine and souvenir stuff for tourist. Especially the experience for grilled seafood or beef over charcoal. Be well prepare to spend a half day here.

GREAT FOOD. VARIETIES TO TRY. A must visit if you are visiting Hachinohe. Only 100 yen, 15 min blue bus ride. You can buy seafood from the merchants and bring them to a BBQ restaurant to cook them yourself. Also many merchants selling japanese street food. Very tasty. I would highly recommend this to all visitors and foreigners.

Truly one of the most comprehensive fish market I have visited in Japan. Much bigger than Kushiro fish market with more variety. Prices are not too touristy as well. Definitely worth the detour into Hachinohae just for a meal here.

Extremely fresh seafood everywhere, with reasonable price (much cheaper and fresher than what you may get in Tokyo, except from the real high end restaurants). Highly recommended.

Good place to visit for good and reasonably priced seafood. We ate a beef Don bento set and some sashimi. Ample parking, but go early to park nearer to the entrance. I believe there is a Y100 bus that comes / goes from a train station as well.

Drove here weekday lunch hour. Not very crowded. Mostly locals around. We visited the BBQ place (shichirin mura) first to pay for a seat. We were given a green basket to put our purchased seafood around the market. 2 hour long eating/cooking period. Tongs, paper plates, salt&pepper shaker and chopsticks were provided. It was a little intimidating to buy the seafood because we had no idea what we were buying, except the obvious ones like shrimp and squid. We spent about 5000 yen for around 10 shrimps, a platter of squid, 2 oysters, 2 scallops, some sort of fish. You can also purchase beer, drinks and rice at the counter. Very fun experience. There are a few other japanese restaurants in the centre. As well as a dry market area selling general goods, souvenirs and toys. Toilets are extremely clean.
Amelda L — Google review
Large fish market that has a BBQ place where you can cook your own seafood once bought at the stalls. The BBQ cost 350yen per person and you get all the utensils you need . They use real charcoal as well. They also serve beer here. At the stalls you can find any seafood imaginable at reasonable prices. If you don't want to cook yourself there are about 6-7 restaurant's at the end of the market.

In Morioka, Japan, stands the remarkable Ishiwarizakura, also known as the Rock-Splitting Cherry Tree. This over 400-year-old cherry tree has grown out of a crack in a large granite boulder. Located near the Morioka Courthouse, this 10-meter tall tree is a stunning testament to nature's resilience. Its solid trunk emerges from a massive granite rock, making it an awe-inspiring sight for visitors.
Impressive even in the winter! Would be fabulous in full bloom in April or May if you're lucky to be here at that time 😊
Alexandra — Google review
Very unique cherry blossom tree which is huge, and has the rock split into half. As it is by the main road, many people do stop by to take photos on this amazing view and it is definitely worth checking it out as it is one of its kind.
Tracy L — Google review
Interesting tree. In the middle of the city. You can park near by and walk to the castle ground and pass this tree. The parking lots have different rates. Be sure to drive around some parking space cost half the price but only few steps away. There are lots and lots of tourists walking in and out to take photo ‘with’ the tree. I can manage to take some photo of the trees without people.
Julin L — Google review
This tree grows between the stones, which is cool, but honestly, it’s not exactly breaking any records for uniqueness.
Dave H — Google review
Date of enjoyment: 15/4/25 What a weirdly grown Sakura, truly a site to behold. Not 100% full bloom as yet when we visited, seems to be a day or two early. Worthy of a visit if you’re in the area, wouldn’t stay for more than 10mins as it is I. Front of a government building and heaps of tourist will make a quick photo stop.

I watched Morioka Festival in front of me. It was so hot that I felt like I was going to faint, but it was a good experience.
JU N — Google review
If there is an exception to every rule, then the parable of the sower has met its match in this cherry tree, that improbably flourished in the middle of a boulder. Worth a quick visit to see, and the tree’s age alone is impressive on its own as well. No tickets necessary - just next to a street.

Bodies of Water
Kappa Pool is a serene and shaded grove with a crystal-clear stream, offering visitors the opportunity to fish and explore a shrine dedicated to local legend. The pool is located near Denshoen and features a shrine honoring mischievous water spirits that once saved a nearby temple. Visitors can enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of the clear stream and even try their hand at fishing for kappa using cucumbers tied to fishing poles, provided they have obtained a kappa fishing license from designated locations.
Pretty interesting place. Birthplace of the legend of the kappa, one of Japan's most popular monsters. You are encouraged to buy a permit to catch them at the Lore-in and fish with cucumbers.
Ryoma S — Google review
Totally disappointed. We had a long drive to see this place and while the nearby exhibition is worthy a visit this stream is a total letdown
Giampaolo F — Google review
Dial down your expectations and focus on the Kawaii (cute). You access the pool passing through the temple grounds - keep an eye out for kappa adorning the railings. 🥒 everywhere ! Denshoen and here will keep you occupied for 90 mins and both worth a look. If you have rented a bicycle this is one end of the path.

It was not the place to drive to visit and to see the site to be honest. I understand that the Kappa is a monster in the folklore story, but the presentation of Kappa story was poor for me. In the Tōno city itself was not attractive for me.
SATOSHI ( — Google review
That was just a creek but I am glad that we went there since Kappa is childhood imaginary creature and interesting to see the place where that fairytale started. Azuki ice cream we had was amazing.
Setsuko R — Google review
Went to Kappa Pool - not much signage for where you can park your bikes, but a nice, cool, relaxing place to visit that also highlights Tono's folklore.
Laura ( — Google review
It closes at 4pm with a gate at the entrance saying no access. We had travelled quite far and were interested to see this place so it was a disappointment to find that it closed so early. It just looked like a regular inaka temple so I wonder why they choose to prevent people from entering. Anyway, I suppose we should have checked more thoroughly before going but lesson learnt. I wonder if the kappa was there that day?
利休梅 — Google review
Kappabuchi is a must on the Tono tourist trail. It is a remarkably creepy little grove, and easy to get to following signs out of Tono town centre. However, it should be said that there is not alot to actually DO here. It's more about soaking up the atmosphere. "Yokai" hunters will enjoy it, but maybe it's a bit boring for children.

Situated in his hometown of Hanamaki, the museum is located at the top of Mount Koshio and showcases various aspects of his life, including his accomplishments in literature, poetry, agriculture, and science. Visitors can explore displays featuring videos, documents, personal belongings, and manuscripts that offer insight into the author's personality.
I had never known any of the things about Miyazawa that were presented here. It is worth the trip if you are familiar with hisnworks like the "restaurant with many orders". 注文の多い料理店
Erik C — Google review
Almost no English captions or information , luckily I could read the Japanese displays. Miyazaki Kenji was extremely productive in just 37years, here you can see the breadth of his writing and a small shop selling picture books and related things too.
Melinda H — Google review
More user friendly than some museums, but every panel must be accessed through a QR code for English translations, making the experience slightly clunky and longer than it should be. Good to visit if familiar with Miyazawa's work, but otherwise not a must see attraction
Troy S — Google review
Kenji Miyazawa is quite the well-rounded writer. He delved into Archeology, Agriculture, and a bit of Astronomy and Cosmology. If you watched the anime movie entitled The Life if Guskou Boduri, the original story is Kenji's work. He is known for his children'e stories and fairy tales. If you are wondering about the presence of cat imagery in the place, read The Restaurant of A Many Orders.

The museum is a great place to visit, its a little out of the way so worth driving to - if you do decide to walk though there is a fairly lengthy stairway up the side of the hill that taunts you by telling you how many steps there are at the bottom haha - its a small museum so doesnt take long to walk around

Miyazawa Kenji Dowa Mura (Fairytale Village) in Hanamaki is a park that pays homage to the renowned children's author, Kenji Miyazawa. The village features a forested fairy path, educational exhibits, and both indoor and outdoor attractions inspired by Miyazawa's enchanting tales. Visitors can immerse themselves in visually captivating displays as well as audio and video content.
I am from Denmark and have recently visited the H.C. Andersen Museum in Odense. If somebody told me this museum was the inspiration for the new parts of the museum, which are praised highly, I wouldn't think twice about it. The entrance to the park in which the museum is, is quite cute and welcoming. But visiting, for at least, on a week day with not too many visitors, was absolutely magical. The forest, the garden, then the walkway, and the main building were so fantastic, the attention to detail was really pleasing. Many senses were stimulated, all at once. When I went inside ''Kenji's School'' I didn't have high expectations. But any doubts I might have had were immediately extinguisher as I went from the forst room after the entrance to the second. The tradition was magical. From a bright welcome to a dark mysterious, yet kind nightsky, envolping my entire existence. I've recommended this museum to all my Japanese friends and family in Tokyo and surrounding towns and cities.
Jonathan A — Google review
A cute little fantasy village based on the stories of a children's story writer with a lot of interesting experiences to be had and things to learn. While mostly aimed at younger audiences, it's fun for adults as well. However, everything is in Japanese, so please take note.

Came here with a friend in October. I had a lovely time and it's not too expensive! The exhibits were interactive and beautiful to see! There is no English translation, which is fine. However, I wanted to use the translator on my phone and couldn't since there was no internet connection. Overall, I would recommend visiting if you're stopping through Hanamaki. There's many great photo opportunities and the cabins nearby have some interesting information as well. I would like to return during nighttime to see the lights.

Geibikei Gorge, located in Ichinoseki, Japan, is a breathtaking natural wonder famous for its striking cliffs and peaceful river vistas. The gorge spans approximately two kilometers and showcases towering limestone walls that soar up to 50 meters high. Visitors can partake in a serene boat ride along the Satetsu River, where traditional flat-bottomed boats glide through the tranquil waters, providing a unique vantage point of the verdant landscape and rock formations.
This boat experience comes highly recommended! The boat itself is larger than expected and kept in good condition. The staff are excellent; they provide informative explanations about the area and keep passengers entertained. The total trip is well-structured: 30 minutes of sailing out, a 20-minute stop for a walk (which flies by!), and 30 minutes for the return sail. Along the entire route, the scenic views, ambient sounds, and atmosphere are incredibly beautiful. A highlight is the return trip when the staff sing a lovely song detailing the four seasons of Geibikei Gorge. Tip: Purchasing your ticket through a tourist agency like Klook is cheaper and very easy to redeem on-site.
NNchan — Google review
This River Ride in Geibikei Gorge was one of the best I've ever had so far. I visited this place as part of a tour with friends guided by a Japanese driving instructor. The scenery was fantastic, ducks, fishes followed along the way, and you could purchase a small plastic bag with food in case you wanted to feed them. We did and they followed us all the way. There were many caves along the way, shadows, as the boat rider did a fantastic job with jokes, talking all the time, keeping us amused. He even sang an old song dedicated to Iwate prefecture. A must go, if you come in iwate Prefecture. I only wish we had a little bit more time in the half way rest, so i could take more pictures.
TRIPLE F — Google review
Cheery boat ride along the tranquil gorge. Perhaps it was not the best time to come (mid oct) as the autumn colours have yet to set in yet, and there was also no mist (mist is often mentioned in the description of how various parts of the gorge got its name). Still an enjoyable trip with ducklings and huge fishes accompanying the journey. The boatman was also cheerily entertaining the almost entirely domestic audience, and also serenading us with a song at the end. A pity I didn’t understand Japanese, but it was a fun experience nonetheless. I bought on klook - about a hundred yen off.
Shihao F — Google review
As long as you make it on time, you could just sit back and relax on the boat to take in the great view of the gorge. You could also consider buying the duck feed and feeding them along the ride!
Oscar C — Google review
Such a relaxing experience cruising down the river and taking in the beauty of the gorge. I loved how the guide sang to us on the way back too! Although the tour was in Japanese, an English guide map was provided for us so we could follow along.
Rebecca B — Google review
This was an incredible time! The boat man's song was soothing. The ducks are too cute! Recommend buying the fish food!!

Nice trip, not too far of a train ride from Sendai for a day trip. Nice scenery with an amazing guide.
Ooly S — Google review
Incredible experience, if you take the train make sure you get a ticket rather than try to use your IC card like we did. Singing of the boat operator was a special experience. Buy fish food right before the boat to feed the fish and ducks along the way. Afterwards there is likely a 2 hour wait for the next train, this provided time to eat at Delika and see the Yugendo cave nearby.

Spiny lobster from neighboring Sanriku has been featured in the news, causing prices to rise? Shrimp from Kesennuma are better, even though they cost the same 5,000 yen. (Original) カニ、伊勢海老、秋刀魚他、鮮魚が多数並んでいます。 伊勢海老はお隣の三陸産がニュースで取り上げられ、価格が上振れ? 同じ5000円の海老が気仙沼産の方が良い。

Ishinomori Manga Museum

Art museum
The Ishinomori Manga Museum is a must-visit for manga enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. The museum celebrates the works of renowned manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori, featuring life-sized figures and animations based on his creations like Kamen Rider. As you approach the museum, you'll encounter life-size statues of Ishinomori's characters lining the streets, creating an immersive experience even before entering.
Wow, this town has embraced their artists and creators. Already on the way to this Manga museum you will find life-size statues of many characters by Ishinomori Shotaro lining the streets. The museum itself is mainly focused on this Mangaka as well, who probably best know for Kamen Rider and similarly older series. But don't let that stop you, as the museum takes you on avtour though his manga history and you will recognize the influences it has had on modern-day manga, anime and live-action. There are interactive setups of the various manga works to experience, and through the day there are 15 minute short movies every half hour that you can watch for free and are English subtitled. The is a rotating exhibition room (Currently hosting the works of '11piki no neko', some of the most adorable and funny cat-based children stories i have seen to date.) And at the top floor you'll find a manga library and small cafe, with a small story on the impact of 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Honestly a recommendation for anyone into japanese popular culture. The museum is mostly in japanese, but google lens or similar tooling will help you through that.

I have no idea what any of these manga are, but that is not their fault, I am a foreigner. I think if you knew the manga, especially if you grew up with it you would appreciate the museum. They even had a movie filmed at the museum that reminded me of power rangers, but probably preceded it.

It's a legendary Manga artist memorial mesium, you have to check if that's your childhood favourite, not all the Manga stuff is here, but if you like Maskman, it's the place.

Kamen Rider!! It’s a great place to see the characters of Manga which I like. You can see the drawings… some of the suits that it was wore too. They even have video games for Kamen Rider which you can hop on and drive.

A really well put together museum with lots of interactive parts. Would definitely recommend if you are in the area 😊 We visited on a Friday afternoon and had the place almost to ourselves. Reduced prices for elementary aged children and our 5 year old was free. Friendly staff and we would visit again!

From the station to the manga museum you can see many figures such as kamen rider and other tokusatsu characters. The museum itself has an special exhibition which covered by the entrance ticket. For tokusatsu fans such Kamen rider, this place is recommended. Although place is not too big, but definitely it puts a smile on every fans of this genre (at least to the people when I visitor there). There is a also some short films you can watch here. The souvenir shop was also pretty cool, and staff are very friendly. This place was one the place where the tsunami hits 8 years ago, and today the manga museum is still standing which by itself is pretty amazing.

I love the manga vibes here. Stunning. I was amazed with all the manga displays. No wonder why people from all ages really enjoy their visits. The entrance fee during golden week holiday is ¥900 for adult, bought directly from the machine. The staffs are very friendly and helpful.
