Suzhou Museum, designed by I. M. Pei, is home to a collection of Chinese artifacts such as calligraphy and ancient craftwares. The Classical Gardens of Suzhou, including the renowned Humble Administrators Garden, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites that showcase over two thousand years of Chinese landscape garden design. The gardens feature a harmonious blend of buildings, ponds, bridges, and trees that convey stories from the past.
This is one of my favorite places in Suzhou. The atmosphere and the surrounding are the next level! I can feel like my lunges are full of fresh air here. The inside of the building is very well organized and clean. I fall in love with this city and their culture, everything is beautiful. Important note: do not wear slipper or flipflop!!
Cholthisha N — Google review
Stunning architectural and artwork in a single venue. Has a bit of similarities to Miho Museum, which was also by I.M. Pei. It's really crowded even on a weekday. Plan a week prior and register before going.
VL K — Google review
A Must-Visit Cultural Gem in Suzhou. Visited Suzhou Museum and was genuinely impressed! The museum beautifully blends modern minimalist architecture with traditional Chinese elements. It’s not just a museum, it’s a visual and cultural experience. The exhibits showcase Suzhou’s rich history, including intricate jade carvings, ancient calligraphy, and Ming/Qing dynasty relics. The flow of the layout makes it easy to navigate even for first-timers. The architecture and interior design are photogenic from every angle, definitely a must-visit photo spot. The tranquil garden inside offers a peaceful escape and is very “zen”, perfect to just sit and relax. It’s FREE to enter, but you may need to book a slot online a week before via WeChat app. I’d recommend coming early to avoid the crowd and to enjoy the calmness of the space. The crowd control could be better during weekends, and the museum café was a bit underwhelming. Still, Suzhou Museum is totally worth a visit if you're in town, especially for those who enjoy culture, design, and photography. You can combine your visit with nearby Humble Administrator's Garden where both are within walking distance!
Bernice T — Google review
I was attracted to The Suzhou Museum, because it was designed by the celebrated Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei (a native of Suzhou). The museum is more than just a repository of historical artifacts—it is a stunning work of art that seamlessly marries modernist architectural principles with the soul of classical Chinese gardens. It is an immersive experience where i find the building itself is as captivating as the collections. What immediately strikes me is the brilliant use of the local Jiangnan vernacular: white walls, dark gray roofs, and an intimate relationship with water and rock. Pei translated these traditional elements into a contemporary language of stark white stucco and geometrical gray granite tiles. The result is pure visual poetry. Inside, the use of natural light is masterful, creating a contemplative atmosphere that highlights the exquisite collection of paintings, calligraphy, porcelain, and jade. Though the collections are wonderful—showcasing the rich history of the Wu region—it is the architecture that truly preserves the "touch of ancient China" while feeling utterly joyful, modern and fresh. During my visiting in mid-September it offered a quiet moment to appreciate this tranquillity, as I appreciate this piece of a true testament to the timeless elegance of Chinese aesthetics.

So hard to get tickets for this museum. You have to pre-book via their Mini Prog, opens 7 days prior at 8am. Tickets are snapped up in a few minutes! I tried for 19 Aug initially but didn't get it, made the mistake of not setting up my profile in advance so by the time I created my profile, the tickets are all gone. Learnt my mistake and managed to secure a ticket for 24 Aug morning. The entrance is conveniently located at Metro Line 6, Exit 2. Here, you can only enter during your ticket time slot, 11am to 12nn in my case. Got an audio guide for ¥30 (one of the last few as they have limited pieces). The main exhibit is just a small section on the 1st floor while there are other special exhibits within the building at additional cost. This is the most scenic museum I've been to in China. Truly 园林中的博物馆, very Suzhou. The exhibits however are nothing outstanding, perhaps just the 苏绣 section, a heritage, skillful, unique embroidery style founded here. The building itself is the highlight here. This is the work of the famous architect, 贝聿铭, the same man behind the glass pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris. The hexagonal windows throughout create such beautiful photos effortlessly. The outdoor garden area is where most gather and probably spent more time than in the museum itself. The route ends at the 太平天国忠王府. From the exit, one can walk to the Humble Administrator Garden and/or Ping Jiang Road. Overall, a good 2.5 hrs spent here. Not much in terms of artefacts but still worth a visit to see the beauty of this museum.
Daphne Y — Google review
The museum itself is an masterpiece, which is designed by I.M. Pei, the world famous designer that also designed the crystal pyramid for the Louvre. Over 40,000 artifacts with over 250 national first-class relics should keep you busy for at least 2 hours. Purchase your ticket beforehand

The Classical Gardens of Suzhou, dating back to the 11th-19th centuries, are a quintessential representation of Chinese garden design. These gardens have been meticulously documented in various historical records and publications, showcasing their architectural features and cultural significance. Preserving elements such as rivers, streets, and vernacular residences within their buffer zone adds to their authenticity. Visitors seeking a comfortable stay while exploring these timeless gardens can consider Worldhotel Grand Dushulake Suzhou as an ideal accommodation option.
The Classical Gardens of Suzhou are a group of gardens in the city of Suzhou, in Jiangsu, China, which have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. A peaceful place to spend a few hours admiring the classical Chinese architecture of different structures and the abundant covered walkways. Wonderful tour here in Nanjing, China.

The Classical Gardens of Suzhou are stunning and full of elegance. The harmony of ponds, rock formations, pavilions, and plants creates a peaceful and timeless beauty. A perfect place to experience traditional Chinese garden art.

I'm sure if you were here at a quiet time, it would be lovely. But since it is one of the most famous places in China for Chinese people, the odds of you being here at a quiet time are slim to none. Expect massive crowds and long queues to just get to specific famous spots for pictures. I found this place extremely frustrating. And I was here on a Monday, not even a weekend or public holiday.
M. V — Google review
Beautiful place but too many visitors in it. Don't have chance to feel & admire the place. Taking scenic photos have wait for chances.
Annt — Google review
I love Suzhou because the city is beautiful, the city's canals, stone bridges, pagoda and beautiful gardens. Suzhou is like the Venice of China. Take the gondola, sailing through a narrow waterway and passing stone bridges. Walking around the canals also is my favorite thing to do. There are so many lovely and beautiful cafes, bookstores, and souvenir shops. All so artistic and pretty. Feel like step back in time. Suzhou is also one of the top tourist destinations, so it's not easy to take pictures at the certain landmark and popular sites due to overcrowded. The Classical Garden of Suzhou we're added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1997. How to get here :I took the high-speed train from Hangqiao Railway station in Shangai, which only took around 30 minutes to reach Suzhou. Alternatively take a coach from West Bus Station, will takes nearly 2 hours.

The Humble Administrator's Garden is a must-see attraction in Suzhou, China. It is the largest and most grandiose of all Suzhou Gardens, and it holds the prestigious title of being one of the Four Greatest Gardens in China. This classical garden dates back to the Ming emperor Zhengde and is divided into three distinct areas. The garden was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997 for its representation of over two thousand years of Chinese landscape garden design.
Gorgeous any time of year. Great history. Just amazing gardens with generations of thought and effort. The bosai collection is out of this world and just wow... As an American visiting... get your ticket in advance, hiring an English interpreter is awesome. I hope you get Li. She is amazing. This is a World Heritage site!

As one of the four great gardens of Suzhou, the Humble Administrator’s Garden truly showcases exquisite landscape design. Its pavilions, towers, water features, and architectural details all reflect the beauty of classical elegance. Visiting here offers an experience of the refined Jiangnan-style architecture, garden layout, and landscaping. The overall atmosphere is poetic and picturesque, making one feel completely immersed in its aesthetic charm. Even on hot and crowded days, taking the time to appreciate the surroundings allows one to sense the classical spirit and millennia of cultural heritage. It is well worth exploring. Standing before ancient calligraphy, paintings, or thousand-year-old structures, one can almost imagine scholars of the past composing poetry and couplets in this very environment, reflecting on the future. The trip is both moving and inspiring, and I highly recommend it. This is my travel review of the Humble Administrator’s Garden.

The Humble Administrator's Garden (Zhuozheng Yuan) 拙政園 is a renowned classical Chinese garden located in Suzhou, China. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the finest and largest gardens in all of southern China. The garden is a masterpiece of Ming Dynasty landscape design, known for its elegant water features, winding paths, and traditional architecture that creates a serene and picturesque environment. It is primarily designed around water, with a maze of connected pools, islands, pavilions, and bridges. The design is meant to create the effect of a wild, natural landscape within a city setting. The garden was originally built in 1509 by Wang Xianchen 王顯辰 a frustrated imperial censor who retired to a simple life of gardening after his official career. He named it the "Humble Administrator's Garden" to reflect his quiet, simple aspirations. Over the centuries, the garden changed hands many times and was divided into separate private estates. It served various purposes, including a government office and a prince's residence during the Taiping Rebellion. The current appearance of the garden largely reflects the late Qing Dynasty style, and the three main sections were finally reunited by the Chinese government in 1949 and subsequently opened to the public.

One of the 4 amazing gardens in Suzhou. This is a famous unesco heritage site with amazing gardens and architecture. A guide would be recommended for you to understand the history of the buildings. Avoid the weekends as it can get really crowded and do expect traffic jams in your car ride there. Highly recommend !
D Y — Google review
An absolute masterpiece and the pinnacle of Chinese classical garden design. It's vast, serene, and incredibly beautiful, with a harmonious layout of ponds, pavilions, bridges, and rockeries. It can get crowded, but its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site is well-deserved. Go early to enjoy its tranquility.
Genta — Google review
I find park and historical places more fascinating after dark so if you are into that then book a night tour from the west gate which starts around 7:30. It was slow paced and a fun experience (by fun i mean if you enjoy silence, sounds of insects after dark and warm lights) There is a short opera styled musical with a light show (8/10) The guide was friendly and spoke enough english to enquire deeply about the history and significance of the space.
AJ — Google review
This is right in the centre of the city. You can take line 6 to the stop named after the garden and the Suzhou Museum. Be careful — as you emerge from the metro, the first long queue is likely for the museum. You need to walk further down the alley and find the Ticket Office, where, to my surprise, they took cards, even foreign ones. This garden isn’t very big, and so it easily gets overcrowded during the weekends and especially during the summer holidays (even on weekdays). The garden itself loses novelty if you have seen Liu Yuan (Lingering Garden), which feels less crowded and hence more relaxed. My four star review could have been 5 had the environment been more relaxed like a Suzhou garden, and had I not seen Lingering Garden. But this is still a very fine specimen.
Sombuddho G — Google review
Suzhou has many decorated gardens. The Humble administrators is one the most beautiful ones. Best visit during the week to avoid being stuck in the crowd. There are small souvenir shops inside.

Lion Grove Garden is a classic Chinese garden located in Suzhou, China. It features intricate stone arrangements, a water feature, and an elaborate pavilion. The garden represents the essence of traditional Chinese landscaping with its use of water, stones, plants, and various buildings with literary allusions. This type of garden aims to create an urban scenery that harmonizes man with nature. Lion Grove Garden is one of nine gardens in Suzhou known for their beautiful scenes, elegant buildings, and cultural significance.
Visiting Lion Grove Garden was a fascinating experience, thanks to the stories shared by our guide. This garden was once the private estate of the wealthiest family in the region, and every detail reflects their status. The architecture is meticulously designed, with each house and hall arranged according to rank and purpose. There are distinct spaces for welcoming guests and separate areas for men and women, showcasing traditional Chinese living customs. What impressed me most were the thoughtfully arranged green spaces and the beautifully crafted windows. Each window frame felt like a living painting, offering stunning views of the garden. The tea-drinking areas, scenic sitting spots, and the serene ponds created a perfect atmosphere for relaxation and appreciation of nature. The garden’s unique rock sculptures, especially the lion-shaped stones, are particularly interesting. They add character and history to the space, making it stand out among other classical gardens. However, the garden was very crowded during my visit. It was challenging to enjoy the views peacefully, as we had to move quickly to keep up with the tour and make room for other groups. Despite the crowds, Lion Grove Garden is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, and nature. It’s a beautiful reminder of the luxurious and artistic lifestyle of ancient China.

Came on Friday in June. Weather is very hot. The place is about 5-10min walk from Humber Administration Garden and is also less crowded., but is still crowded. Scenery is nice and great for taking pictures. Many local dress in traditional costume and getting photo shots here. Outside of the garden are many shops selling souvenirs and restaurants.

Beautiful Amazing garden. Slow down, try to enjoy the view through every window. They have their own unique beauty. The bamboo plants are my favourite. I love the stone path. If you look really close, you will find there are bats on the stone, in Chinese, bats had the similar pronunciation like Fu, which means blessing, good fortune.

It's incredibly beautiful here. The stones are like a rocky maze and there is so much to see since it is a really big garden. There are lots of people here since it's a popular tourist attraction and only cost 40¥ to come in.

Gorgeous Chinese garden. Monks that visited long ago said that the numerous unique rock sculptures and formations appeared as though there were lions prowling through the garden forest - hence the name. Truly beautiful.

Even the few courtyards that are open are far from those described in the book. But when I found some flowers and plants, I was still careful. It’s just that I came at the wrong time and I didn’t see the flowers and trees. Even if I read the cards, I saw them. Bai Haitang from Yihongyuan is the object of chanting for the first club of the Daguanyuan Poetry Society. But in later chapters, some withered begonias suddenly burst into branches, and Baoyu lost consciousness and fell into madness. Not much to say about the bamboos in Xiaoxiang Pavilion, but Sister Lin’s tears in repaying debts are speckled. The lotus flowers at Champs-Elysees are withered, and I want to be plucked out. However, Daiyu quoted her as saying, "The lotus leaves are left to listen to the sound of rain." Fortunately, the lotus remains. The red plum blossoms in Cuicui'an came out of the wall in the snow. Baoyu moved Miaoyu with a post from an outsider and successfully broke off the branches. Later, Baoqin stood in the snow holding plum blossoms and wearing a cloak, which attracted the admiration of the ancestor Jia Mu. Shanghai Ancient Town at Zhujiajiao Tourism Development Co., Ltd. is a 1,700-year-old water town often called the Venice of Shanghai. It boasts well-preserved ancient artifacts, a rice market, and 36 stone bridges. The town features classical Qing and Ming Dynasty architecture and offers boat tours to explore its beautiful old residences, bridges, and shops. This famous water village is one of the few that you can reach completely by metro only. It is very convenient to travel from Shanghai city center as a tourist. The town itself is very beautiful and you can spend a few hours here walking around and trying multiple kinds of local food. Recommended for a day trip!

Interesting village by the water. One of the tourist attractions in Shanghai. There are many stalls selling sugarcane juice, rice dumplings, and chive pancakes. Restaurants do offer stir fried water caltrops, fresh water prawn, and braised pork as their specialties.

It was a nice experience however it started to just be more of the same as you walked around. Just restaurants, shops selling the exact same souvenirs. Still it was a pleasant experience and there was a very nice tea house that was playing some traditional folk music.

Quite pretty water town, went in the morning. I think night time it will be great as well. A few places to explore indoor as well like mansion, exhibition, calligraphy around which you can buy the ticket bundle at the entrance or if you want individual tickets the spot is also do-able. A little commercial since its tourist spots as well. A boat tour to go cross the river to another side of the bank is a good experience as well.

The Shanghai Auto Museum is a must-visit for car enthusiasts, showcasing a diverse collection of vintage vehicles and classic cars. Located in the Shanghai Auto Expo Park at Anting Town of Jiading District, the museum offers an extensive look at the past 100 years of automobile history. With over 70 rare vehicles on display, visitors can explore the evolution of modern cars and learn about the assembly of different car parts.
Informative and interactive museums! A large collection of antique cars. You can rent an audio player to guide you thru, there is English and mandarin option. The cafe on the top floor is ok, we only got a coffee. And btw you are allowed to bring along the coffee when you browse. There is a “Antique Car Experience” for paying about ¥300 which already includes 2adults and 1 or 2 children entrance tickets. A 20 mins ride to a nearby park where you can take good look at the car and take photos! This museum gives you the history of automobile from invention, to adding speed elements, to modifications and manufactures. It is almost like the Patterson automobile museum in LA, if you know which one

Visited in February 22, on a Sunday. Started to get busy in the afternoon, but quiet in the morning. The museum shows great samples well preserved historical cars from different countries. It is definitely worth a visit if you like history of transportation. You also get a glimpse of what Shanghai looked 100 years ago for transport , roads and traffic.

Well curated museum and lots of information as long as you get a guide. Without a guide you're just looking at the eye candy. It's in the middle of nowhere if you are staying in downtown Shanghai so it may be a trek. If you love cars though, it's worth a visit. Although imyou may have seen all these cars before with the exception of the China specific cars.

Car museum located in the Anting Shanghai International Auto City area. Definitely a must see if you are interested in cars especially classic cars. 60 RMB for an adult ticket. Open Tuesday-Sunday 9:30am to 4:30pm. Closed earlier in the day than expected so take note to get there earlier. I easily spent over 3 hours browsing the 3 floors of cars and information. First floor has the history of the automobile from the wheel to the first diesel engine, auto transmission, and assembly line. Lots of cool stuff to see. Next floor has a history of the automobile in China. 3rd floor is comprised of antique classic car collections and an extended range of miniature car models. On the top level there is a learning and discovering area for children and adults which teaches you about how cars work and the parts of the car (engine combustion cycle, transmission, suspension, steering, etc.) All of the children's stuff is in Chinese however. Also F1 racing simulators on this level. There is a gift shop by the entrance that sales lots of miniature car models. Great if you can occupy yourself, not many guide options and only restroom I saw was on the top floor. Definitely check it out for the classic cars alone.

One of the best example of automotive history I’ve been to. A fantastic blend of history of the car in China evolved as well as many international examples. Well worth the visit.

Located within the Shanghai International Automobile City, the Shanghai Audi International Circuit is a hub for automotive enthusiasts. It hosts various events including the prestigious Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix. Visitors can explore the Porsche Experience Center and Shanghai Auto Museum. The circuit offers an immersive experience with access to areas like paddocks and grandstands. While it provides excellent views of on-track action, some visitors suggest improvements such as track tours and better amenities like food options and beverage outlets in the grandstand area.
Magnificent race track. I joined a tour around the circuit and the guy was a chilled guy. We visited the media room, race control room, podium stage, and winners waiting room. It’s a really fun experience as a f1 fan to see things up close. There’s also a big karting circuit next to it, recommended as well.

An exceptional experience at the Shanghai Audi International Circuit. The track is world-class, perfectly built for Formula 1, offering both thrilling racing action and an outstanding spectator experience. The organization was seamless, with clear signage, efficient entry, and easy access to various viewing areas.

tour was very nice and went to paddock, grandstands, briefing room etc. One thing missing is a track tour, like Daytona they should have trams that take you for a roundabout, but since they're resurfacing the track now maybe they will in the future. They also need to have an open merch store, and consistent schedules for tours and gokart track, which was supposed to open but never did. The AC was not on and inside it was sweltering and completely deserted with no resteraunt or anything open which is a missed opportunity. Overall it's a great and cheap way to see f1 track, but they need to capitalize on customer needs more.
VWT — Google review
Shanghai International Circuit for F1 race event. Consider taking the metro - “Shanghai Circuit” subway station on Line 11 as traffic to the circuit is narrow (1 way in and out) and very congested during these large events.
Robert T — Google review
Very well built F1 track with huge grand stand and lots of facilities. If budget is a factor the best seats are at the K stand hairpin curve. I'd give it 5 stars if those were not occupied by the F1 race in Singapore.

Amazing place to enjoy the extreme speed of F1 racing car. You will have the most lively experience with the engine smoke smell, the noise and the wind. Enjoy the race!

Got the chance to come here for a VIP race in late 2016 and it was awesome. Got to head down to track level and eat some food with the racers. Wicked time. Headed up to the stands to see the beginning of the race and then when it started raining, headed inside to get warm. Awesome event!
Colin S — Google review
Excellent views of most of the circuit, that itself provides plenty of on track action. My only gripe would be some escalators to at least get up a few levels of the very high grandstand, and some better food options, and maybe some beverage outlets in the grandstand itself (on a higher level)

The F1 Chinese Grand Prix is an absolutely amazing motorsport experience. The speed and sound of the F1 cars is truly unbelievable and a must see for all motorsport enthusiasts. The track is well organized but the queues on race day are very long so make sure to go early. The food caters for Western and Eastern tastes but overall is not very good. Toilets and seating in the grand stands are in good condition, clean and comfortable. Definitely worth a visit!

Shanghai Happy Valley, also known as the South Gate, is a popular destination for families and thrill-seekers alike. During the tourism festival, visitors can enjoy half-price tickets, but be prepared for long queues at popular attractions. The park offers a wide range of amusement facilities including roller coasters, carousels, and pirate ships to cater to all types of tourists.
(Translated by Google) Great place, bought a ticket on trip.com, a combo for two days of water park and attractions, the first day we went to the attractions, there are practically no queues, a little disappointed that raincoats are not included in the ticket price on the water slide and things can only be left in their storage room, also for a fee, rode all the attractions, and there was still time left. I especially liked the wooden slide and next to it the red slide with almost vertical descents. The next day we went to the water park. About how to get there, SHESHAN metro station, we get off and cross to the other side of the road, there is a free bus, there are different buses to the attractions and the water park. I also liked the water park, but I didn’t like the fact that when you get the key to the storage room, they don’t give you towels and be especially careful in the showers, don’t leave things unattended on the bench, there are no cameras and no one has cancelled theft, while my daughter was washing herself in the shower, a bag with shorts and panties was taken, accidentally or intentionally, we never figured out. That's how civilization is and they searched the cameras but didn't find who took it, it left an unpleasant aftertaste. Also, overall, it's a very good water park.

The rollercoasters are great, however, during my visit they were not all open. The facility seems bigger than it needs to be, and some decorations seem really odd or unkempt. However, if you are into rollercoasters, then it may be worth a visit.

Thames Town, situated in Songjiang, Shanghai, is a unique destination designed to resemble a classic English village. The town features charming cobbled streets and picturesque Tudor-style homes that exude an authentic British countryside ambiance. Upon entering Thames Town, visitors are transported into a European movie-like setting with every detail reflecting strong British influences. The iconic Gothic-style church at the town's center adds to the enchanting atmosphere reminiscent of ancient English churches.
Far from Shanghai 1 hours, less people come, nice environment with beautiful flowers. Saw the couples came here for weeding photo. Lawson enjoying hot latte and new Orleans chicken drumsticks is yummy

I’m British and I have a passing interest in urban architecture so I thought it would be interesting to visit this novel area to see how this supposed modal of a quaint British town would look. In some ways it actually felt a little strange feeling, seeing these vague reimagining of old style British buildings and streets, but everything feeling empty and abandoned made it feel a little ghostly. I was also hoping to see a few European style cafes and even maybe a British style pub to grab a pint, which would have added to the novelty, but sadly I couldn’t see anything that would match the theme. It was still an interesting visit although it did take almost two hours from the centre of Shanghai taking the subway and then walking from the station. In reality Themes Town was originally created as a residential project, not as a tourist attraction, but I think they can definitely lean more into the latter by embracing the novelty and it could become a more fun place to visit.
Charlie M — Google review
around 30 mins bike ride (10mins didi) from the closest metro station. Nice scenery while you walking really different image of shanghai id advise taking a cab there from the metro than cycling back. The town itself is a average rendition of an English town. handful of cafes and gift shops worth dropping into . Towards the lake has lovely landscape and ideal for Dates, Picnics etc.
Shannon L — Google review
Feel a little cheated to come all the way here and there is nothing much. It’s not really worth it unless you have a lot of time to spare in Shanghai. Or you are looking for somewhere to take wedding photo. Thames town is a residential estate so don’t expect anything to shop or even eat. Just a few eateries targeting on tourist. The place is not very big so you can finish in half an hour. A lot of couples took their wedding shots here.
Hazel Y — Google review
I don't know where to start. At some point this was maybe a good idea but then hardly anyone moved in and those who did moved out because no commerce got started and then the weeds and wedding photography studios took over. I feel sorry for anybody like me who thought they could grab a pint in a proper local pub. I was trying the door for far too long before it dawned on me there is nobody home in Thames Town. It should be rebranded as a huge Britain-themed film lot.
Drew B — Google review
Fairly interesting 'British Town' in Shanghai. Has a church, winding cobbled streets and mock tudor housing. Could be improved with 'british' cafes or even a British pub! It is a bit of a ghost town to be honest. There are quite a lot of couples taking pre-wedding photos which is nice. If taking the subway, get out at Songjiang Xincheng (Line 9) and take the bus (松江16) rather than walking the whole way, as it's quite a walk (about an hour). It's free to walk around.
Ryan C — Google review
Very cool place for shooting, kinda European style village. Was extremely happy to visit it. And you have to take a cab or a bus to get there, but its pretty affordable.

All stars for nature. Staying in Shanghai for a long time could be oppressing. This Park could be an ideal escape from the city. You can easily use public bus with that cost only 22 RMB (have yet to count your transportation fee to the main bus station). If you are students, remember to bring student cards (even if you are from non-Chinese universities, they just check the graduation dates). The entrance tickets for students are 30 RMB (prettt affordanle for efforts to plan more trees!) Bike renting process annoys us a lot. My friend and I are both foreigner. We only have alipay as a payment method. Eventhough the banner does show accepting alipay. Staff said they only accept Wechat pay. We could not do that as we don’t have Chinese accounts. If we want to use Alipay, we have to deposit 200 RMB for each bike, which does not apply to people who pay with Wechat Pay. Anyways, we decided to walk cause we kinda felt weird. Exploring the park by walking turns out pretty good; we will stopped by places a bit more easily. Walking and exploring half of the park takes us around 1 hour and a half. If you bike, you can go around the park in 1 hour (that what the staff said, but probably you will not see the nitty gritty). Enjoy your trip! Cheers!

Shanghai Museum is a massive, free museum that houses an extensive collection of Chinese art and artifacts. The museum's striking $70 million building resembles an ancient bronze cooking vessel and offers a stunning display of China's finest art. With five floors and a total area of 39,200 square meters, the museum showcases various exhibits including bronze and jade artifacts, sculptures, paintings, calligraphy, Ming furniture, ethnic costumes, coins, and pottery from different periods in China's history.
The Shanghai Museum has two buildings: one at People's Square and a newer, larger one called Shanghai Museum East. Admission is free at both, but the reservation process and operating hours differ. People's Square location This is the original building, famous for its unique round-top, square-base architecture that symbolizes the ancient Chinese perception of the world. Located at 201 Renmin Avenue, Huangpu District. Operating hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed on Mondays. Admission: Free, but you must reserve a ticket in advance. Highlights: Collections of ancient Chinese art, including bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, furniture, jades, seals, and paintings. It also features special international exhibitions.
Doug H — Google review
As of April 2025, the main exhibition is "The Civilization of Ancient Egyptian" special exhibition, with many permanent exhibitions relocated to the Pudong branch ("Shanghai Museum East Campus" on Google Maps), leaving only three permanent exhibition halls at the People's Square branch. That's why I spent most of time here on Egyptian exhibitions, the artifacts on display are very well curated with tools, sculptures, tablets, four thousand years old bread, and many historical pieces on display, visualizing the ancient civilization on many aspects. Notes that the names of the exhibits are available in Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean, but the full description or extended explanation is in Chinese, so make sure your translator app is ready. I spent about an hour at the permanent exhibitions, the displays of Chinese furniture and Chinese minorities' arts and crafts were interesting, but not on the scale that I expected to see here. The permanent exhibition is free, but I couldn't find a way to book the ticket or tell the staff that I just wanted to walk-in. I ended up booking the special exhibition for 148 CNY/person through the "上海博物馆参观预约" WeChat miniapp, just show on your phone that you booked and they will let you in the front entrance, the actual ticket validation is at the entrance of each special exhibition hall using your passport number. Even though I did not expect to see ancient Egyptian artifacts in Shanghai, I believe the special exhibition is worth the price, but this is not the place to learn about Chinese and Shanghai history. If you happen to be in the area, the alternative ones are Shanghai Historical Museum and Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, both of which are in the People's Square area (disclaimer: I have yet to visit these two).

上海博物馆 (人民广场馆) The museum is spread over 2 buildings, some distance apart. This is the one at Renmin Square. Free to enter but you need to plan early and snatch tickets online in advance. The slots open at 12.10pm thru their WeChat account 2 wks out (recommend going in at 12nn and keep refreshing the page until it opens). All the slots were snapped up within 20 mins or so. Level 1: A special Egyptian themed exhibit split across 3 halls - The Secrets of Saqqara, The Land of Pharoahs and The Age of Tutankhamun. On till 17 Aug 2025. Wasn't my intent to see this, having been to Saqqara before. But this is what the locals are here for hence the tight ticket situation (cause you first need a general entry into the museum). I paid ¥30 for an audio guide, thinking it was for the normal exhibits, only to realise it's just for the Egyptian showcase. As such, I paid another ¥148 for the ticket to the 3 exhibit halls. The audio guide only covered slightly more than half the exhibits, and with the many tour groups and crowds, it would have been more effective if the earphones are noise-cancelling. Level 3 & 4: Free to enter. A hall on Costumes of the Minority Groups in China, another on Ming Qing Furniture and a special exhibit hall on carvings made out of Rhino horns.

The Shanghai Museum at People's Square has limited displays. During my visit, most of the rooms were closed. However, the building itself is quite impressive. I've heard that there are two or three other branches of the Shanghai Museum nearby that feature more interesting exhibits worth exploring. If you are visiting People's Square, a half-hour visit to the museum is sufficient, and there is generally no waiting time to enter. There's no need to buy tickets; our passports serve as admission.

The Shanghai French Concession Needle General Yard Former Site is a repurposed factory area that has been transformed into a vibrant pedestrianized neighborhood filled with shops, restaurants, and a creative atmosphere. The area's leafy canopy of plane trees adds to its allure.

Nan Jing Lu Bu Xing Jie, also known as Nanjing Road, is often compared to Times Square in New York City. The street is lined with countless illuminated buildings that create a vibrant and energetic atmosphere, especially after dark. It's a place where you can easily lose track of time just by strolling along its length. For those interested in wax figures, Madame Tussauds Shanghai is conveniently located nearby.

Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
The Bund is a historic 1,500-meter-long waterfront promenade in Shanghai, featuring a mix of modern and colonial buildings. The area has undergone gentrification, attracting luxury brands like MCM, Cartier, Prada, and Ralph Lauren to set up shop in former colonial banking and trading headquarters along the Huangpu River.
The Bund is a powerful visual lesson in economic progression, Shanghai has arrived at. I truly appreciate the sheer scale of ambition here. The colonial architecture on this side—a reminder of old foreign concession—provides a stunning contrast to Pudong’s futuristic Lujiazui skyline, a true symbol of modern Chinese might. It’s like watching 100 years of progress condensed across a single river. The current lifestyle is dazzling; a cosmopolitan buzz that rivals the Lion City, packed with high-end luxury and dining. Despite the crowds, the waterfront promenade is truly magnificent at night. A must-see spectacle.
David L — Google review
The location is beautiful and becomes especially captivating in the evening, when it is lit up with vibrant lights. Visitors are advised to wear appropriate protective clothing, including warm coats and comfortable shoes, as the temperature tends to drop significantly after sunset. The area can get quite crowded during the evenings due to the high public turnout, but overall, the atmosphere is lively and the experience is very enjoyable.
Manoj A — Google review
A postcard can't capture the energy here. We came for the iconic skyline but fell in love with the atmosphere. Strolling as the sun set and the city lights ignited was pure magic. The perfect blend of historic grandeur and futuristic wonder. An absolute must do.
Mohamed K — Google review
The Bund (also known as the Waitan) is a famous waterfront and protected historical district in central Shanghai, China, known for its unique blend of historic colonial architecture and modern skyline views across the Huangpu River. The Bund features 52 buildings along a 1.5-kilometer (0.9 mile) stretch of Zhongshan Road that showcase a range of architectural styles from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, Romanesque, and Art Deco. The historic buildings on the west bank of the Huangpu River offer a striking contrast to the modern, futuristic skyscrapers of the Lujiazui financial district on the east bank, embodying Shanghai's rapid transformation. The area is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, bustling with activity day and night. The buildings and the Pudong skyline are dramatically illuminated in the evening, providing spectacular photo opportunities. A walk along the riverside promenade is the best way to appreciate the architecture and the dynamic cityscape on both sides of the river.
Doug H — Google review
I visited The Bund a few times and it never disappoints. The riverfront promenade is wide and easy to walk, with a clear view across the Huangpu River to the glittering skyline in Pudong. The sweet spot is late afternoon into evening. You catch the sunset, the sky shifts color, then the buildings light up and reflect on the water. It makes photos look great without much effort and the breeze off the river keeps things comfortable even when the walkway gets busy. What I like most is the contrast. On one side you have the historic facades and grand old banks, on the other you have sleek glass towers and the Oriental Pearl peeking through. It feels lively but still orderly. Street musicians show up now and then, families stroll, and there are plenty of ledges to pause and take in the view. If you want a calmer experience, go on a weekday or arrive a little earlier than the evening rush. Practical notes. Wear comfortable shoes because you will end up walking more than planned. If it is breezy, a light jacket helps. There are a few spots with a slightly higher vantage point if you want a wider shot, and you can usually wait a minute for a clear frame even when it is crowded. Getting there is straightforward by metro, and there are lots of cafes and restaurants a short walk away if you want to sit down afterward. Overall, The Bund is an easy recommendation for first time visitors and repeat travelers. Give it a couple of hours from late afternoon to night and you will leave with a full camera roll and the feeling that you have seen the essential Shanghai view.

Amazing skyline with the old Shanghai bund & new shanghai skyscrapers across the bund. Super crowded with tourist & photographers offering photo taking services. Place is very safe with policemen station everywhere.

A promenade along the Huangpu River with iconic views of Shanghai's skyscrapers and the Pearl Tower. Just steps away from Shanghai's bustling streets, dotted with historic European-style buildings, including the postal museum. There are plenty of vantage points to choose from, and plenty of street photographers are ready to help you snap photos. There aren't many good places to eat here, most of the places are overhyped and overpriced with terrible taste. There is one place to eat that we tried and it is cheap, some of the menu quite good and the taste is better than some of the expensive places there. We're lucky enough because they are open until late at night.

Bodies of Water
Huangpu River, located in Shanghai, is surrounded by various architectural marvels designed by renowned architects such as Benjamin Wood, Kengo Kuma, and Yichun Liu. The area features pedestrianized zones with bars and boutiques like Xintiandi, a mixed-use complex at Shipyard 1862 Renovation in the financial district of Pudong, and an art museum called Long Museum West Bund. Additionally, tour buses offer guided rides along the river passing classic city landmarks.
A walk along the rivers embankment is certainly something you should do when in Shanghai, on one side you have the ultra modern financial district with the skyscrapers and on the other you have all the old architecture, seeing so many boats go along the river with people enjoying the views. The cruise is a must as well.
Jamie H — Google review
Nigh view from the River. The Huangpu River is the lifeblood of Shanghai—both geographically and culturally. Stretching approximately 113 kilometers (70 miles), it divides the city into two iconic halves: Puxi (west of the river), the historic heart of Shanghai, and Pudong (east of the river), the modern financial hub. With a width ranging from 300 to 770 meters and an average depth of 9 meters, the river flows through 11 districts before merging with the Yangtze River at Wusong in Baoshan District . Historical Significance The Huangpu River has been central to Shanghai’s development since the Ming Dynasty. Formed in 1522, it became a vital artery for agriculture, irrigation, fishing, transportation, and flood control. Its strategic location turned Shanghai into a major port city, especially during the colonial era when foreign concessions were established along its banks . The river’s significance continued into the modern era, serving as a crucial shipping route and a source of drinking water for the city. Modern-Day Importance Today, the Huangpu River remains integral to Shanghai’s identity. It supplies approximately 40% of the city’s drinking water and continues to be a major shipping channel . The riverbanks have undergone significant revitalization, transforming former industrial zones into vibrant public spaces. Projects like the reconstruction of 22 kilometers of the east bank aim to create lively urban corridors that attract both locals and tourists . Cultural and Recreational Hub The Huangpu River is not just a functional waterway; it’s a cultural landmark. The Bund, located on the western bank, showcases a stunning array of colonial-era architecture, while the eastern bank in Pudong boasts futuristic skyscrapers like the Oriental Pearl Tower. River cruises offer panoramic views of these contrasting skylines, especially enchanting at night when the city lights reflect off the water. Additionally, the riverbanks host numerous festivals, art installations, and recreational activities, making it a dynamic space for community engagement. Environmental Efforts Recognizing the ecological importance of the Huangpu River, Shanghai has implemented measures to improve water quality and restore natural habitats. Efforts include reducing industrial discharges, enhancing sewage treatment, and promoting sustainable urban development along the riverbanks . In summary, the Huangpu River is more than a geographical feature; it’s a symbol of Shanghai’s past, present, and future. From its historical role in shaping the city’s growth to its current status as a center for culture and recreation, the river continues to be a defining element of Shanghai’s urban landscape.

Best go in the evening to enjoy the city lights from Shanghai buildings and also The Bund. Lights turn on at 6pm during winter. Also a good place for night photography.

The Huangpu River flows through the heart of city & divides Shanghai in older Puxi & newer Pudong area. River at near The Bund was popular tourist destination in Shanghai. East side was Pudong with modern high-rise skyscrapers along with iconic Pearl tower & 600-meter-high Shanghai tower whereas at north side was huge classical western buildings. River offered medium side cruise, especially during evening views from cruise deck was amazing.

Yu Garden, a 5-acre garden constructed in 1577, showcases Ming dynasty pavilions, ponds, rockeries, and arched bridges. The Deluxe Yu Garden View Rooms offer comfort and indulgence with views of the garden and old Shanghai town. These rooms feature king or twin beds, a sitting area, walk-in closet, large marble bathroom with luxury amenities like 'Bed of Reign,' digitally controlled guestroom system with iPad for TV control and room service orders.
Absolutely amazing place, worth the visit for all nature and scenic lovers, it's in the heart of Shanghai near the yuyuan bazar and a must for people visiting Shanghai, it's better to be early as it's less rush we went in October mid but the temperature was still a bit warm but manageable, tickets can be bought at the garden itself for 30-40 rmb depending on the season, for kids below 120 cm it's free entry. You can buy some souvenirs in the premises if you want and come out to the bazar and enjoy some great food.
Vipul R — Google review
What an incredible place! It is a perfect example of classic Chinese architecture from the Ming Dynasty, serving as an oasis of tranquility amidst the city's hustle. An important note: the classic garden itself (Yu Garden) closes before dusk and has a paid entrance. The surrounding area, the Yuyuan Bazaar, is what becomes incredibly illuminated and, in my opinion, even more beautiful at night. Access to the bazaar is free and the view is magical.
Luana B — Google review
I visited Yu Garden in Huangpu and it easily lives up to the hype. Picture classical Ming style in the middle of the city, koi ponds under carved pavilions, rockeries that twist into little caves, and the famous zigzag bridge leading toward the Huxinting teahouse. It is busy, yet the layout gives you plenty of corners to slow down for photos and a few quiet minutes. Timing makes a difference. Early on a weekday is calm and the light is soft for photos. Late afternoon is also lovely, since the surrounding bazaar starts to glow and you can wander straight out for snacks and souvenirs without losing that old Shanghai atmosphere. If you visit around Lunar New Year, the annual Yuyuan Lantern Festival usually runs from early January into mid February and the area turns into a glowing maze of themed lanterns. It gets crowded, but the spectacle is worth it. Practical notes. The garden keeps typical hours around 9:00 to 16:30 with last entry about 16:00, and tickets are seasonally priced, usually in the 30 to 40 RMB range. You can buy on site or online, and an hour or two is enough for an unhurried loop if you are not rushing. Getting there is simple by metro. Yuyuan Garden station sits a short walk away and connects to Lines 10 and 14, which makes this an easy stop to pair with the Bund or People’s Square in the same day. Right outside the garden you will find the Yuyuan Bazaar, a warren of traditional style storefronts that sell snacks, tea, trinkets, and a few touristy bits, fun for a short browse after your visit. Overall, Yu Garden is a classic for good reason. It gives you a compact crash course in Jiangnan garden design, plenty of photo friendly moments, and a smooth link to the food and shopping right outside, all without needing to leave central Shanghai.

Yu Garden, Shanghai is a 400-year old garden built during the Ming Dynasty as a private garden. The garden has very intricate design structures, with traditional buildings, bridges, ponds and pavilions and the most beautiful Dragan wall. There are many scenic areas and each one is a big photo opportunity. The famous Yuyuan Bazaar is located right next to Yu Garden. The Chinese architecture and design of the Bazaar is very beautiful. There are a lot of shops in the Bazaar selling jewelry, souvenirs, and local food items. Minimum three hours is needed to visit the Yu Garden. It's a must visit place in Shanghai.
Soudamini M — Google review
This garden is an absolute must-see. It’s a wonderfully peaceful place to spend a late afternoon — which is exactly what was recommended to us. Although it can get a bit busy around that time, the soft, golden light gives the whole area a magical atmosphere. I suggest arriving around 2 p.m. and staying until closing. By the time you leave, if it’s after dark, you’ll step out into the surrounding area, which is also beautifully illuminated and well worth exploring.
V.patel — Google review
The Yuyuan garden is a really searched touristic target in Shanghai and because of that, very crowded. It is better to look for specific periods which there is not so much people inside. Other good possibility is to go with one previously organized tour. The garden is amazing, full with Chinese history and very fine and unique pieces. There are different sectors, all of them with different kinds of art and the exterior gardens are part of such art. The entrance costs around four US dollars/Euros. I'd estimate 90 minutes to see it. Absolutely recommended.

Beautiful classical Chinese garden in the middle of the city. Peaceful paths, ponds, bridges and stunning architecture. A must-see to understand old Shanghai’s charm. Go early to avoid crowds.

A stunning garden in the center of Shanghai, where you can lose yourself in the beautiful buildings reconstructed in an ancient style. There's a wonderful perspective between the old buildings and the ultramodern skyscrapers that surround the garden. I always recommend a guide to point out any hidden gems in the garden.

The most iconic among them is the Shanghai Tower, which stands at 632 meters, making it the tallest building in China and the second tallest in the world. Its unique twisting design not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also helps to reduce wind loads on the structure. The use of sustainable technologies, such as rainwater collection and energy-efficient systems, highlights a commitment to environmentally friendly design.
