The site contains 367 buildings constructed over different periods, showcasing a mix of brick and stone buildings as well as wooden-structure buildings.
It's an old temple in the mountain area. It's located inside the large area. I needed to jump onto some electric car because from different attractions it was quite far away. There were many people there. Before entering the temple, I watched the performance of the young monks. It was quite interesting. The temple was nice and quiet enough for people to pray and learn about the history and architecture of the temple.

You will not see the images of monks practicing martial arts as you expect. Now Shaolin Temple is just a temple. This area is quite large so if you do not have time, you can buy a tram ticket to go quickly. At some times of the day, outside the gate, there are martial arts students performing. Need to buy ticket

Visiting the Shaolin Temple in Zhengzhou was an incredible experience. The place has such a powerful energy — you can actually feel the history and tradition in the air. The temple itself is stunning, surrounded by beautiful mountains and greenery that make the whole area feel calm and refreshing. The climate was just perfect when I visited, adding to the peaceful vibe. Every corner of the temple has something to admire — from the ancient statues and carvings to the monks practicing kung fu with absolute discipline and grace. Watching them train was mesmerizing; it’s not just a performance, it’s a way of life deeply rooted in their culture. It’s truly amazing how the temple combines spirituality, martial arts, and history all in one place. I’d definitely recommend visiting if you ever get the chance — it’s a place that leaves you inspired and full of awe.

Too much crowed, too much commercial..we were dreaming to see real quite place where the guys are living and training, to feel the history and old golden traditions, but found only a lot of shops, street food restaurants and show - all just for tourists, that’s why we were really disappointed ☹️ price for the tickets are so expensive for that. Honestly it’s a tourist trap, don’t recommend unfortunately

By far the highlight of our China tour. It's amazing to hear the history of the Shaolin temple, see a demonstration, but most of all, travel up the cable car up the mountain to see the Temple of Heaven and walk along a towering cliff face.

Well worth a visit. Steeped in history. Worth hiring an English speaking guide. Approximately 300RMB. To get here hire a Didi for around 150RMB, and slightly more getting back. Buy tickets when you get there 80 RMB. Includes kung fu show.

My wife had the opportunity to visit the fabled temple, located at the foot of Mount Song birthed about 495 a.d. and home of Chan ("zen") buddhism and ethical martial arts ("wu de"), courtesy of Bodhidharma. She tells me it's quite commercial now given publicity and Unesco cultural status in recent times.

A must-visit if you're in Zhengzhou! The long travel time is worth it—this legendary temple, famous from Jackie Chan and Jet Li movies, was even more impressive in real life. As a fan since childhood, seeing it firsthand was unforgettable. We booked a private tour, which included a Kung Fu lesson and an incredible live performance. The martial arts showcase was the highlight—so powerful and precise! Highly recommend this experience for anyone interested in Chinese culture or Kung Fu. Truly a dream come true for martial arts lovers! **5/5 stars**—don’t miss it!

White Horse Temple, situated in Luoyang, China, is a significant historical site completed in 68 AD. It's believed to be the first Buddhist temple in the country and features five major halls along a central axis. The city of Luoyang itself is rich with cultural and historical attractions such as the Longmen Grottoes and Shaolin Temple. Despite being crowded during holidays, visiting this exotic temple with its tall Sheli Tower can be a beautiful experience.
Consist of Chinese, Thai and Hindu temple. Large temple and museum complex need to take a shuttle bus to the temple main gate from the car park.

Very historic place and can be the first Buddhist temple in china from the Han dynasty (AD68) and well worth a visit. Area was calm and not so many tourist! Visit also the quiet room for a tea.
Jonas E — Google review
First established in 68AD, it is considered as the first Buddhist temple in China. The main buildings are reconstructed during the Ming and Qing era, 1950s, and 1973. Adjacent to this temple are three international Buddhist temples: the Siamese, Burmese and Indian Buddhist temples. The three latter temples are built from private Thai-related group’s donation, the Burmese government, and the Indian government.
T Y — Google review
The old Chinese Buddhist temple is nice, but the other temples (Thai, Indian, Burmese) are recent constructions and they look cheaply built, with rather bare interiors. Overall feels a bit rushed a tacky. I don't think it's worth the detour when visiting Luoyang, especially since it takes a while to reach by taxi or public bus. Personally I would recommend skipping.
Benoit V — Google review
Said to be the first Buddhist temple in China, this temple have about 20-30km away from luoyang city is worth a visit. On the way out you will pass by many temple from various county such as Thailand, Myanmar, and India.

It is considered the first Buddhist temple in China, established in 68AD by the Han dynasty. Area was calm surrounded by beautiful gardens

First temple in China, built in 68 A.C.. It has a lot of histories behind it. I would suggest to bring a tour guide to know what you are really looking at. The incense is free of charge, light 1 or 3 (not 2, not 4!) incenses and make a wish. There are also Hindu, Myanmar, and Thai temples and towers built in this temple. Don’t miss these.

(Translated by Google) ●"Imperial City Prime Minister's Mansion" (also known as Wutingshan Village) has a total area of 36,000 square meters and is located in Beiliu Town, [Jincheng City, Shanxi Province]. It is the former residence of Chen Tingjing, the famous prime minister of the Qing Dynasty. It is composed of "inner city, outer city, purple clouds"... and other parts. The royal library is magnificent and magnificent. The Zhongdaozhuang is majestic and spectacular, with continuous Douzi residences and courtyards, majestic and steep river and mountain towers, and wonderful layers of Tibetan soldier caves. It is a rare Ming and Qing Dynasty castle-style complex with official residential buildings. It is known as "the first cultural giant in northern China". The clan’s house.” ●The architectural complex of "Imperial City Prime Minister's Mansion" consists of two parts: "Inner City" (formerly known as Douzhuju) and "Outer City" (Zhongdaozhuang). The architectural style is similar to "Qiao Family Courtyard" and "Wang Family Courtyard" , are all typical "Ming and Qing" northern courtyards. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Chen family living here was at its peak, with as many as 38 people embarking on official careers, and most of them had outstanding political achievements. It can be said that it was an Imperial family, and you can feel the cultural atmosphere of a scholarly family. ●The first thing we arrived at in "Imperial City Prime Minister's Mansion" was the "Outer City", which was built during the Qing Dynasty by "Chen Tingjing" for him, his wife, and children to live. At the entrance, you can see the "Wuting Mountain Village" plaque gifted by "Emperor Kangxi" on the imperial library, as well as the still well-preserved couplet "The trees are lush in spring, and the yellow flowers are fragrant in the evening", praising "Chen Tingjing" achievements. ●Going past the "University Scholarship Hall" is the "Dianhan Hall", where you can see an exhibition of the Chen family's deeds. The plaque of the "Dianhan Hall" is also Kangxi's imperial pen. Walking north from here, you will come to the "Miss's Courtyard" specially built for female relatives. The rockeries and fish ponds are clearly visible. The most famous thing in the "Miss's Courtyard" is the jade-inlaid "Picture of Pines and Cranes Prolonging the Year". There are also couplets written by Emperor Qianlong on both sides: "The pines will remain green forever, and the clouds and cranes will live for thousands of years without borders." , quite exquisite; the life in the boudoir of an official lady can be seen clearly. ●Continue walking eastward and you will reach the inner city of "Imperial City Prime Minister's Mansion". This is the old residence of the Chen family. Among them, there is a 7-story building that is particularly eye-catching. This is the "Heshan Tower", the landmark building of the "Imperial City Prime Minister's Mansion", with a height of more than 30 meters. It was built for defense during the Chongzhen period of the Ming Dynasty. It was built after being invaded by rogue bandits. Compared with the construction level during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, such a tall building has survived nearly 400 years of wind and rain and still stands. One can imagine its solidity. In the "Heshan Tower" and the 107 attached caves for hiding soldiers, there are crenels to look out for the enemy, secret passages connecting each other, and living facilities such as water wells, stone mills, and grain to cope with long-term sieges. It is worth mentioning that although the "Heshan Tower" was built due to war, it was a good place for panoramic views during peacetime. Climbing up the Heshan Tower, you can have a panoramic view of the entire Prime Minister's Mansion. ●Another highlight of the "Inner City" of "Imperial City Prime Minister's Mansion" is the "Chinese Dictionary Museum", which houses dictionaries of various forms from all dynasties in [China]. It is currently the only dictionary museum in [China]. Finally, we came to the "Zhiyuan" in the south. This was once the place where the children of the Chen family studied. It is a large garden with a very good environment. ●"Imperial City Prime Minister's Mansion" has a "Welcome to the Holy Spirit" performance at the gate every morning around nine o'clock in the morning. Most tourists will choose to visit the mansion after coming here early in the morning to watch the performance. In addition, there is an ancient culture street near the exit of "Imperial City Prime Minister's Mansion". There are snacks and souvenirs for sale. You can buy some back on the way. The Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings here are also very unique, which is very suitable for taking pictures.

Yuntai Mountain is an idyllic location with breathtaking scenery and stunning landscapes. It's highly recommended to spend a minimum of three days here to fully explore the area, which boasts clean and well-maintained facilities. The mountain's beauty is unparalleled and definitely worth visiting, despite not necessarily offering any new or groundbreaking experiences. The views of the mountains are truly mesmerizing and warrant a return trip in the future.
Great place to refresh your mind. Amazing scenary with wonderful landscape. Better you stay here so you can explore for 3 days. The toilet quite clean.

You can take public bus number 3 from the city to yuntai mountain. The journey took about 70-90mins. Upon reaching you will need to buy entrance ticket and the bus ticket which you can take freely multiple times during your visit. (Translated by Google) Beautiful and lots to explore. The Vietnamese name is Van Dai Mountain. This is not a big mountain, but if you explore it, you will see many interesting things. - Just arriving at the bridge into the mountain, looking down from the bridge, you can see a fault like a miniature Grand Canyon, not as deep, not as wide, but the narrow ravine looks more beautiful. - There is a glass bridge, but this tour does not go there. - Walking the rough road at the bottom of the mountain is very interesting. To get to the bottom of the cliff, you need to go down, across the bottom, then up. It's just tiring, it's not hard to walk, and it's not too difficult, so trying hard to avoid skipping it would be a waste. Even the elderly are the same. - This road called the road follows the cliff. There is a section that goes along the edge of the existing rock, only adding a railing, there is a section that goes completely into the mountain to create a tunnel, and there is also a section that cuts into the rocky cliff to create a niche in the mountain, one side is a rocky mountain, the other side is an abyss. very beautiful and elaborate. Although it is not deep, not as high as the road to Vo Dang mountain, not wide enough for cars to pass, it is enough to show the great efforts of people. Below the abyss, there are wide places and narrow places with streams. If there is heavy rain, the water can quickly flood. When it's sunny, there are many places to rest and enjoy the scenery. + Many artificial bridges are mostly short, crossing streams to add interest. - The river has been blocked by a spillway, so when I went the water was gentle. The lake and dam are not large, but enough for a boat trip. This is an area worth exploring for its beautiful and somewhat rugged mountains.

A big park with enough to do for two days (the ticket is valid for 48 hours). Despite the stunning scenery it is overpriced, overdeveloped and crowded. The area around the big waterfall in particular feels like a shopping mall. For 180 yuan you only get to access a few short trails and viewing areas, so I think it is better to self drive or hire a taxi for a day to see the scenery since all of the sights are on a public road.

The Qiao Family Compound is an 18th-century estate that serves as a prime example of a traditional private residence in China. Built by the wealthy financier Qiao Zhiyong, this vast courtyard complex boasts period decor and artifacts. With over 300 rooms spread across a labyrinthine network of courtyards and doorways, the austere yet captivating architecture is typical of Qing dynasty design.
Lovely place to visit. But the weather is already too hot! It’s now only April but feels like August Summer. Carpark/ visitors drop off point is over 1km without shade.

Actually, I didn’t know about this place or family in the history. They are a successful businessman dated back to Qing dynasty. He is a trader for tea, beancurb and many others..this place becomes famous when a movie shot by Zhang Yi Mou director received a award in Cannes film festival for the movies red red lantern .. well decorated with red lantern everywhere. This major tourist attraction between Pingyao and Taiyuan was featured in the movie Raise the Red Lantern and a Chinese TV series. It was the housing compound of the scholarly merchant Mr Qiao and his extended family. Now the state owns it and turned it into a tourist joint. The compound is very nice. You get a good glimpse of how the rich lived. There are exhibits featuring daily life of the 19th century. The place is very crowded and parts of it becomes very commercialized.

The Qiao Family Compound (喬家大院), also known as Qiao Grand Courtyard, was the residential compound of the well-known 18th century financier Qiao Zhiyong (喬致庸) during the reign of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong (清朝乾隆皇帝). The estate covers 9,000 square meters and has 313 rooms within 6 courtyards. This is now a museum and it was where main location of the movie "Raise the Red Lantern (大紅燈籠高高掛)" by famous director Zhang Yimou (張藝謀導演) was filmed. The 2006 Chinese historical TV drama series "Qiao's Grand Courtyard (喬家大院)" was filmed here as well.

Yuci Laocheng, nestled in the heart of Jinzhong, is a charming ancient city that offers a delightful escape for travelers. Although it’s compact enough to explore in just one or two hours, its allure lies in its historical architecture and serene atmosphere. But overall it's still worth visiting. Tickets cost 60 yuan, which is quite cost-effective in comparison. The things you buy there are a bit expensive, and there are many children's playgrounds in the attractions. Twin Pagoda Temple, also known as Yongzuo Temple, is a significant historical site in Taiyuan, China. The temple complex features two impressive tiered octagonal towers that were constructed during the Ming Dynasty over 400 years ago. It is located in the Jinyuan District and is celebrated for its well-preserved pagodas.
A lot of memories, amazing historical place, almost empty, u can take ur time discovering the place.
Sam Z — Google review
Great for anyone interested in history, architecture, and breathtaking views. The two towering pagodas, dating back to the Ming Dynasty, are stunning examples of ancient Chinese craftsmanship, standing tall with intricate brickwork and elegant design. Only the main temple and access to Twin Pagoda Temple you need to pay an entry fee of 10rmb/pp. Otherwise a lot of locals use the park for leisure and exercise. Climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of Taiyuan through little windows, making the effort well worth it. The temple grounds are beautifully maintained, with peaceful gardens, traditional pavilions, and centuries-old stone inscriptions adding to the serene atmosphere. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply looking for a tranquil escape, the Twin Pagoda Temple is a gem that shouldn’t be missed. Highly recommended, especially during summer or spring when the trees have green leaves & flowers.

This is one of the more interesting attractions in Taiyuan city. The autumn chill created a relaxing and tranquil ambience for the park and it was not crowded on a weekend, terrific for a stroll or walking the dog. This temple with the two pagodas dated back to the Ming dynasty, the east pagoda was built in 1597 while the west in 1612.
CK C — Google review
Entrance to the temple itself is now 30 Rmb. The temple and park is massive. There are many historical complexes inside, including a calligraphy museum. Complete the experience by climbing the towers itself. Just be careful because the stairs does not have safety railings and there are many people trying to climb it.

The Twin Pagoda Temple (Chinese: 双塔寺; pinyin: Shūangtǎsì), officially known as Yongzuo Temple (Chinese: 永祚寺; pinyin: Yǒngzuòsì), of Taiyuan, Shanxi province, China, is a temple containing two pagodas dating from the Ming dynasty. The East pagoda was built in 1597, and the West one in 1612. In charge of the pagoda’s construction was a high ranking monk, named Fodeng (佛灯). By the 20th century, deterioration since construction had caused the East pagoda to slant from its center of gravity by 2.87 meters. In 1995, experts set about trying to correct the slant. They removed earth from underneath the pagoda and successfully corrected the pagoda's tilt. The temple contains approximately 260 stone steles, as it is the location where stele from temples in the area that are no longer extant were moved. The temple grounds also contain many peony trees, one of which dates from the Ming Dynasty.
Achu M — Google review
As a local, I've gone to this place several times. Now only in specific dates and limited time can tourists go inside the tower. Twin Pagoda Temple is now inside a park, whose entrance fee is 20 Yuan. Inside the park, you can enjoy beautiful flowers in spring and experience great miaohui(activities held specifically at temples) in summer. However people nearby are really bad. Outer Temples are engraved with characters, mostly tourists' names, inner Temples are quite narrow, allowing only one person to pass the staircase simultaneously. View from up there is not good, because now you can see nothing but taller buildings. In total, if you just want to see the tower or want to climb them, do not come, because they are highly protected so you can't even touch them nowadays.

(Translated by Google) Yongzuo Temple is commonly known as the Twin Pagoda Temple. Some travel bloggers on Xiaohongshu (Little Red Book) suggest that visiting Twin Pagoda Temple is not worthwhile simply to see the two towers. However, I believe it is well worth a visit. One of the towers is even open to visitors, allowing them to climb to the top. The view from there is breathtaking, offering a breathtaking view of the other tower and downtown Taiyuan.

(Translated by Google) I went there late and couldn't go in, but it looked pretty good from the outside. After completion, it was called Xuanwen Pagoda together with the old pagoda. The twin towers are both 54 meters high, facing each other in the north and south, 46.6 meters apart. They are both constructed of bricks and imitated wood.

I grew up here. lack of facilities, no parking lot, dirty roads nearby.... We, locals, can actually go into the zoo by climbing over the mound(wall of the zoo). Its bad service doesn't measure up its entrance ticket price, let alone almost every inner-zoo animal house will charge separately. Food and drinks inside the zoo are expensive, up to 5 times or higher than normal price.

(Translated by Google) "Disappointing experience to say the least" 15 starsReviewed May 22, 2014 I'll start with the redeeming qualities. There is one. The size and set up of the zoo is really great for a full day's walk. The attractions are really spread out, which I appreciate because I love walking. Time for frustration. There are many kinds, in my opinion. The animals are not cared for. Most of them have missing limbs or tumors growing on some part of their body. Some of the animals have bloody sores and have been obviously neglected. Most of the animals look tired and run down, and some really look like they need more room to move around but don't have it. Many of the enclosures are too small and very dirty, with piles of old food and feces rotting all over the floor. The large birds don't have enough room to fly, so they jump around and beat up on the ground or one of the few perches they are allowed. One time I visited, there was a baby giraffe instead of its mother, which was unable to stand up and cage itself. Another giraffe was pacing around its enclosure, looking anxious and uneasy. The worst part was the minimal staffing on both occasions we visited. There was not a single worker who obviously cared for the animals. Meanwhile, people were allowed to taunt the monkeys and throw trash and wrap up candy into their enclosures. No one was around to put a stop to the harassment. While trying to see the tigers, we accidentally bought tickets to a circus act that included cruel trainers forcing the animals to do awkward (unnatural) tricks with whips and sticks and all-out aggression. I'm not an animal expert, nor have I been to a circus since I was a kid, but this didn't seem right to me or the friends I was having. We left the zoo after this, very disgusted and disappointed with the entire experience. It is especially famous for its beautiful red leaves in autumn, ranking first among the eight ancient scenic spots in Jinyang. Even if you have admired the autumn colors from various places, you will still never get tired of its beauty when you come here. In the cool wind, the golden and red reflections make your heart happy. The beauty here is enough to make the tired body not tired, the gloomy eyes shine again, and stand Looking down from a high place, the boundless vastness makes you feel more comfortable and comfortable. Nanchan Temple, a diminutive sanctuary nestled in a remote location, boasts an aged main hall that predates even the renowned Foguang Temple by over 80 years. Regrettably overlooked by Mr. Liang Sicheng due to its secluded position, this temple holds an impressive seniority despite its modest size. Remarkably, it stands as China's most ancient wooden edifice, captivating visitors with its rich history and profound cultural significance.

I get the impression that the design is similar to the Kondo Hall of Toshodaiji Temple, which can be said to be from the same period. (Translated by Google) The main hall of Nanchan Temple is the oldest existing wooden structure in China and the only Buddhist temple known to have survived before Emperor Wuzong of the Tang Dynasty exterminated Buddhism. Because it is located on a remote cliff platform in Wutai Mountain, it has escaped the ravages of the Huichang tribulation and military disasters in the past. The Loess Plateau has a dry climate, so it has escaped the ravages of natural pests and disasters. Over the long years, although the Nanzenji main hall survived, it was almost forgotten. It was not discovered until the 1950s, and its glory in the history of architecture once again bloomed. This hall is less famous because it was discovered later than the East Hall of Foguang Temple, and is not as large or complex as Foguang Temple. However, the importance of the Nanzen Temple Hall in the history of architecture cannot be ignored. The original statues of the Tang Dynasty are preserved in the hall. , and is a classic in the history of Chinese sculpture. Quiet pass surrounded by the Great Wall & a temple in the mountains plus shops & performances.
So cool! I felt like as if I'm in a gaming world (三國無雙). You need around 3hrs to explore the ancient gateway and wonder how is it even possible for any invaders to takeover this place.

Disappointing, not because of the the venue, but the weather came in and shrouded everything in a dense fog! Walked the wall a little and visited a few ramparts but left the rest for the next visit, hopefully in better weather! Also the crowd was there but not overwhelming, even though it was the weekend before Golden Week!!

(Translated by Google) Chongfu Temple was first built in AD 665, the second year of Linde's reign in Tang Dynasty. It was built by Wei Chi Jingde, Duke of E Kingdom of Tang Dynasty. Yuchi Jingde was a native of Shuozhou. He built a temple in his hometown and had the honor of returning home in glory. After wars and years, the temple buildings gradually declined and disappeared. In the Liao Dynasty, it served as Lin Taishi's Yamen Office, and was renamed Lin Yamen Temple during the reign of Emperor Tonghe of Liao Dynasty. In the second year of Tiande of the Jin Dynasty (1150), Wan Yanliang, King Hailing of the Jin Dynasty, inscribed "Chongfu Zenwei" on his forehead and changed it into a temple. The temple was first called Chongfu Temple, and the name is still used today. Chongfu Temple has undergone renovations in the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. The largest renovation was in the fifth year of Chenghua in the Ming Dynasty. The Daxiong Hall was changed into the Three Treasures Hall, and the Sutra Pavilion was changed into the Thousand Buddhas Pavilion. There are ten existing buildings, among which the Shanmen, King Kong Hall (Tianwang Hall), Thousand Buddha Pavilion (Sutra Pavilion), Main Hall (Three Treasures Hall), Amitabha Hall and Guanyin Hall are distributed from south to north on the central axis, with a total of five entrances. courtyard. In front of the Thousand Buddha Pavilion, there are drum towers and bell towers distributed east and west. In front of the Three Treasures Hall, there are Manjusri Hall and Ksitigarbha Hall in the east and west respectively. In addition, at the end of the building group, there is a stele gallery. In the Ming Dynasty, there was a walkway behind the Guanyin Pavilion leading to the Pilu Pavilion, surrounded by verandas with a regular shape. Now Pilu Pavilion and Langlang no longer exist. Pagoda of Fogong Temple

Mentioned on

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
The Pagoda of Fogong Temple is a grand 11th-century Buddhist temple featuring intricate wooden elements and statues of Buddha. This towering structure stands at an impressive height of 67 meters, making it the largest remaining pagoda in the world. Despite only allowing access to its ground floor for public viewing, this historic site is definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in learning more about ancient Buddhist architecture and culture.
Great job, very detailed! It’s almost a thousand years old, and with its connection to the Wu-Kong story, it’s definitely worth a visit for anyone interested.

This pagoda was constructed under the rule of Emperor Daozong of Liao dynasty in 1056 in Ying County, Shanxi province. It is a beautiful and magnificent architecture standing at 67 metres, the oldest fully wooden pagoda still standing in China. The 9 stories tall pagoda housing the Buddhist temple is legendary as it survived seven earthquakes as well as the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Breathtaking piece of art work. The oldest structure in the world that’s completely held together by wood only. I could sit here and watch the pagoda for hours

The oldest and tallest wooden pagoda. It was built in 1056 in the Liao dynasty. On the ground floor of the pagoda stands a statue of Sakaymuni Buddha of 11 meters high. Apparently you cannot go up the pagoda, beyond the ground floor as during a renovation they removed part of the structure making it more unstable.
JR S — Google review
The oldest and tallest wooden pagoda. Nothing much accept for the pagoda. There are some local delights not to be missed. 二女凉粉, recommended by our local guide
C L — Google review
The wooden pagoda may be known to every visitor as one of the oldest wooden pagodas if not the oldest in the world. However, it’s only when one stands right beneath it that one starts to appreciate the ingenuity of the pagoda’s designers. Each of its levels may look similar yet so different - feeding the eyes of the visitor with varying proportions and intricate craftsmanship. On different levels are horizontal placards on which are written words of wisdom or blessing. The big tall wooden pillars surrounding the tower also caught my eyes. Its coat of paint has blistered and flaked; the wood on every square inch of the pillar has cracked. The closer I looked (see photos), the more I wondered how much longer these pillars could do the job of supporting such a huge structure. But then they have been for hundreds of years and are likely to continue for many more. They are after all the integral part of a holy place and are protected by a mighty force which in turn is protected by the tower. The tower is primarily built to protect a gigantic Buddha right beneath its roof. Standing at the feet of the Buddha and looking upwards, I quickly felt the majestic and imposing aura radiating from its torso all the way to its head. One marvels at this pagoda more when it is made known that the structure has remained intact through several earthquakes and after being hit by cannon balls during war time.
