Zuiganji Temple

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Zuiganji Temple, located in Matsushima, is a 17th-century Zen temple known for its exquisite painted sliding doors and cedar-lined path. It also features prayer caves and is designated as a national treasure. Originally founded in 828, the temple was rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1609. The founder of Sendai city played a significant role in its construction.
Tucked in the forested heart of Matsushima, Entsū-in was built in 1647 to enshrine Date Mitsumune, the beloved grandson of warlord Date Masamune. It’s renowned for its serene moss gardens, Zen rock landscapes, and the unexpected presence of Christian motifs inside the ornate mausoleum — a rare glimpse into Japan’s secretive 17th-century ties with the West. Peaceful and deeply atmospheric, Entsū-in blends reverence and beauty, especially in the soft quiet of summer mist or autumn light. A winding path through stone lanterns and cedar trees makes the temple feel like a tucked-away memory more than a tourist stop.

Zuigaji Temple in Matsushima, a Zen temple, has about 400 years of history. The Temple inside main temple building or so-called hondo, in addition to kuri [living residence quarter], especially central room [shitchu], kujaku no ma, have many art collections of 16th and 17th centuries. Each room of the main temple building is decorated with paintings and sculptures that matches its theme and each has a different ceiling. Because no photo taking is allowed inside the main building, thus, no photo of it is here. While interior or buildings inside are not allowed for photo taking, visitors still can enjoy temple garden, renovated and rebuilt temple buildings, its Japanese dry garden (枯山水), karesansui, or Japanese rock garden [a Zen garden], mountain-rock caves with various resided Bodhisattva. When walking out the worship hall and garden, the passage to the rear entry which leads to main avenue of Matsushima Island is called Zuigaji Temple Caves, which is an area for memorial service and ash storage ground for the deceased, and it dated back to the 12th century until 18th century. The Caves played an important role for the Sendai and other local to pray for the safe passage to eternity and next Pure-land life. The statutes of various Buddha and Bodhisattva are NOT original, but probably a replica or contemporary designed of religious worship sacred. The temple entrance fee is $700 Yen for adult. It is about 10 minutes’ walking distance from JR Matsushima Kaigan Station and is neighboring to Entsu-in Hondou, another famous Matsushima temple.

Zuiganji Temple is the spiritual heart of Matsushima and one of the most magnificent Zen temples in northern Japan. Founded in the 9th century and rebuilt in 1609 by the powerful feudal lord Date Masamune, it beautifully reflects both the strength and sophistication of the Date clan. Walking through its grounds feels like stepping back in time — a quiet world of cedar trees, mossy stone paths, and wooden halls resonating with centuries of devotion. The main hall (hondō), a designated National Treasure, is breathtaking in its craftsmanship. Inside, the golden fusuma (sliding doors) and intricate wood carvings showcase the refined culture of the early Edo period. Every detail — from the soft tatami underfoot to the elegant painted screens — exudes a sense of calm power and understated beauty.
Wisanu T — Google review
Here is designated as a National Treasure. So we couldn't take photo inside, but worth to see. Well mentained quiet mindful place.
Ken M — Google review
the temple grounds are spacious and surrounded by tall trees and greens, the atmosphere is really calm and peaceful, perfect for a relaxing walk. entrance fee is required but you get to see so much - beautiful temple grounds, buildings, garden, old architecture and artifacts, recreation of lots of artwork and scenes, it's pretty interesting. i love how serene the place is and you can just take your time to explore.
Tracy L — Google review
A beautiful temple in pristine condition. Well taken care of with an interesting museum about Date Masamune. And the caves are fascinating.

Amazing setting for fall colors at their peak today. The temple has cultural significance but is more modest than some the opulent ones. But the fall colors!

Mentioned on

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Godaido of Zuiganji Temple is an intricately designed Buddhist island temple dating back to 1604. It is located in Matsushima's tourist district and offers a serene escape from the bustling surroundings. The temple, along with the long red Fukuurabashi Bridge, is illuminated at night, providing a captivating view.
Small wooden temple that you can walk to as it's connected to the mainland via beautiful red bridges. It's FREE to visit this Island, and it's pretty much right in the middle of everything so you shouldn't miss it. It's also very picturesque with the bright red bridges. Highly instagramable!

Perched on a tiny islet just off the coast of Matsushima, Godaidō Temple is a compact yet iconic structure originally built in 807 and rebuilt in 1604 by warlord Date Masamune. Accessible by a vermilion-lacquered footbridge, the temple enshrines five Buddhist wisdom kings (though they’re only shown to the public every 33 years). Its open-air architecture, intricate wood carvings, and panoramic bay views make it one of Matsushima’s most photogenic and spiritually resonant landmarks — a perfect blend of history and sea breeze.
Lawrence G — Google review
Nice temple on a beautiful small island. Watch your steps on the bridge 😉
Bonjour T — Google review
We visited Godaido on Monday, November 25, 2024, under a bright and clear sky. The view of Matsushima Bay from there was beautiful.
Sirimon W — Google review
A great spot to take in beautiful sea view at matsushima ba, the temple is old but so beautiful architecturally. we watched the sunset here which is peaceful and serene, there wasn't really much people around and everywhere you look, it's simple an amazing view with nature surrounding old structures.
Tracy L — Google review
Fair entrance price for a historic trip in the temple.
Yu S — Google review
Awesome place to visit with great views over the bay. The temple looks magnificent. It was not crowded and so lots of photo opportunities. Easy to get to from the local station. Felt very spiritual and leaned about the history of the shrine.
Harro — Google review
This small temple offers a nice view of Matsushima Bay. You can reach it by crossing a small bridge. While the temple itself is quite simple and doesn’t have much to see, it’s a good spot for those who want to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Fukuurajima

Mentioned on

Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Fukuurajima, a charming 15-acre island park nestled in Matsushima Bay, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. Accessible via the striking 252-meter-long red bridge known as Fukuurabashi, this botanical treasure boasts an array of diverse flora and fauna. As you stroll along its winding paths, you'll encounter serene spots perfect for reflection and observation. The island features a teahouse, temple, and shop that enhance your experience amidst the lush greenery.
I had a wonderful time visiting Fukuura Island in Matsushima. The walking path was well-maintained and perfect for a peaceful stroll. The autumn foliage was absolutely stunning, with vibrant reds and oranges creating a picturesque landscape. The scenic views of the islands and the sea were breathtaking, especially with the sunlight reflecting off the water. There are plenty of spots to sit and relax while enjoying the natural beauty. The bridge connecting the island was a unique highlight and added to the charm of the experience. Overall, it's an excellent spot for nature lovers and anyone looking to unwind. Highly recommended!
Takeshi K — Google review
Loved visiting, the island is well maintained and had many beautiful views. It’s nice to meander around the island and see plants and wildlife. There’s a public restroom and cafe on the island. The bathroom was well kept, and we didn’t visit the cafe. The walking paths are mostly “paved” with a soft turf. Some of the trails were more natural with roots and rocks occasionally sticking up. I would recommend a visit. ¥200 fee was worth it.
M C — Google review
Fukuurajima is one of Matsushima’s most beautiful and easily accessible islands, connected to the mainland by the striking red Fukuurabashi Bridge. Once you cross over, you’ll find yourself surrounded by lush pine forests, quiet walking paths, and stunning views of the bay from several lookout points like Miharashidai. The island feels peaceful and unspoiled, perfect for a relaxing nature walk or quiet reflection. Along the way, you can visit small shrines like Benzaiten Temple and enjoy a tea break at the island’s cozy teahouse. The mix of nature, spirituality, and scenic beauty makes Fukuurajima one of the most rewarding places to explore in Matsushima.
Wisanu T — Google review
Unfortunately weather was not good - cloudy and little bit of drizzling time to time. Enjoyed the walk in the island. Walking path were in excellent condition.
Swapan M — Google review
Peaceful place to walk and relax, especially on a hot day. Several good viewpoints.
Samvel K — Google review
It’s a great place for a stroll, and you’ll feel safe here because there are no bears🐻 even at this season.
Shelley L — Google review
It is an island with beautiful scenery. It's worth going for a walk around the island for just 200 yen (April 17, 2024). The bridge closes at 4:30 PM in the evening, and I noticed that there is a security guard walking around the island to see if there are still people on the island (I think it's approx. 5 p.m.) Most of the walkways around the island are paved with a special material that is soft, flexible and comfortable to wear. Although there was some walking up and down, overall it was a comfortable walk. Along the way, it is not only shaded by many big big trees. There are also colorful flowering plants. especially sakura and Japanese camellias that blooming, falling, decorating the walkway beautifully. And of course, there are also three or four Matsushima Bay view points around the island.
Banyen L — Google review
Banging deal to pay the small entrance fee to cross the bridge & explore the small island. I walked fast and took less than hour to cover all routes. The weather wasn’t the best so the lighting was a bit sad

Nestled in the picturesque Matsushima, Breeze Bay Seaside Resort Matsushima offers a delightful escape with its spacious and airy accommodations. Guests can enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi while soaking in stunning views of Matsushima Bay from their rooms. The resort features a casual restaurant where you can indulge in a hearty breakfast and savor delicious dinner options, including an all-you-can-eat buffet that promises both quality and quantity.
Located on top of a hill. Inconvenience if you take public transport as the steep slope will posed a challenging task. Food wise is ok and nothing to shout about. Room is new, clean and well designed. Many games for kids.
Jason S — Google review
A nice reception and everything seemed nice to start with. After checking in and being pleasantly escorted throughout the accommodations, we got in the room and noticed it was dated and not very clean. You wear sandals they provide, but you would not want to walk on the carpets as they are very dirty. They have two private onsen pools that you can reserve, which appeared to be a nice option, so we signed up for a private room at 10 pm, then went to the dinner buffet. We were pleasantly greeted, and it looked nice. The table was set with crab legs and shark fin soup that was individually heated at the table by Sterno fuel. A nice touch. The overall rest of the buffet items were low quality and not very fresh, as we found the crab legs and shark fin soup to be as well. We also noticed how filthy the carpets were, with many stains and dirt from constant wear. Not many items for dessert, and again, lower quality. All the serving trays and utensils were noticeably finger marked with signs of never being washed out. Next was the private onsen room, when we got into the room it looked inviting, but then also notice how dirty and unkept everything it was. Upon entering the pool, we noticed dirt and hair floating on the water and along the sides of the pool. It was filthy in there. The breakfast buffet was very limited to traditional Japanese breakfast items, with no eggs or western items available. The items on the buffet were of low quality and again all the serving containers were so old looking with many finger marks on them. The views from the outdoor front balcony provided some nice views. But overall, the facilities look nice, especially in the front entry area, but the rest of the facilities were old, outdated, worn and poorly maintained. The workout area has not been cleaned for weeks, the karaoke room smelled terrible and was visually not clean. Our room lacked clean windows, or clean countertops. Great location, although it is difficult to drive to, could have provided a very nice stay, but the poor state of cleanliness and maintenance, and low quality food...we would never want to return.
Scott K — Google review
Friendly staff, funky place, but very old and tired facility. The pillows are like rubber blocks. That said- inexpensive for the area.
Simmers O — Google review
The hotel requires you to take off your shoes inside and walk in awkward slippers. Why? Also, what is it with some Japanese hotels that play a constant music in the lobby? I come here to avoid noise an relax. The breakfast is OK. The lobby has a shop, reading area and a lounge area. 2 good massage chairs are for free usage. The good news is that the hotel is close to train station. The bad news is that reaching a hotel by foot is a challenge due to a steep road, especially if you have a heavy luggage. No laundry machines.
Samvel K — Google review
The rooms are definitely dated, mine also had a really strange smell that really didn't help, not sure if it came from humidity or the air conditioning unit. The location is fine, make sure to ask the hotel to arrange a taxi pickup for you from the nearby train station because accessing the hotel by foot is inconvenient to say the least. The baths are also fairly dated, the individual baths that can be booked are a nice touch. The included dinner and breakfast are decent, not that there would be anything to compare them to in the neighborhood because the hotel seems pretty isolated. Also note that there are lots of families with kids, if you're looking for a peaceful and quiet retreat, this might not be it.
Léo — Google review
Bali style resort. Very cozy. Close to E45. Buffet breakfast and dinner available. Outdoor public bath. Indoor private bath. Snacks and drinks are available on arrival. Very friendly place. Old property, Japanese style. Love it. I will come back again
Jaz — Google review
A very pleasant midweek stay. The Breeze Bay is on a hillside overlooking Matsushima Bay and has good rooms and facilities and really great food. Will almost certainly use again next time we bring guests to the area.
Andy G — Google review
Overall a good hotel for a short stay in Matsushima. The staff was welcoming and accomodating, and the breakfast is good. The public bath is clean and warm enough, the private baths are a tad too hot for my taste. There are free welcome drinks and free pudding and oden available in the lobby. Unfortunately, the other guests were not very considerate of others.

Visitors can easily reach this enchanting locale by taking a bus from Oishida Station, with convenient shuttle services available.
Was there as a day visitor. You need to go there before 3pm to use hotsprings. You can use foot bath for free. The trek is beautiful so are the views at night.

Ginzan Onsen in early December is like stepping into a winter wonderland straight out of a postcard. The snow-dusted rooftops, warm glow from traditional ryokan windows, and gentle sound of the river running through the village create an atmosphere that is nothing short of magical. Be prepared for heavy snowfall and occasional strong winds during this time of year. The abundant snow adds to the charm, blanketing the wooden buildings and gas-lit streets, but dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear as it can get slippery. The wind can make it feel extra cold, but once you step into the hot springs, all the winter chill melts away. *The parking area* is located outside the village since cars aren’t allowed to enter. The nearby lot is well-organized, and a short shuttle service or a scenic snowy walk will take you to the heart of the town. Despite the weather, the cozy ryokan, hot springs, and delicious local food, like soba noodles and freshly baked manju, make it all worthwhile. If you’re looking for a magical winter escape, Ginzan Onsen is the perfect destination
N E — Google review
It’s ok for a day trip from somewhere else if you are going for the architecture and photography. Otherwise there are not many shops or restaurants or museums to occupy you, nor is there any hiking. I wouldn’t plan to spend more than 3 hours, if you are having lunch or trying the public Onsen (not for me) as the town is tiny and mostly ryokan hotels. If you are staying in a ryokan and didn’t drive, I’d recommend just coming late afternoon, enjoy the hotel Onsen, have a nice dinner and leave the next morning. There’s really nothing else to do here.

This is must visit place when you are in Yamagata. Once you see the buildings, you'll directly remember the Spirited Away. The place is peaceful and cozy. I came there when it was rain. The rain and the smell of the hotspring made the wonderful atmosphere. I got recommendation to go there when winter, I'll do it next time, maybe, if I have another chance. You can try various kind of foods in the restaurant in here also you can buy lots of kind cute souvenirs. Don't forget to take a lot of pictures!

Ginzan Onsen is one of the most famous destinations for visitors to this area. While the atmosphere is especially beautiful in winter, autumn, when I visited, is also charming. The town is small and peaceful, offering a relaxing experience. Visitors can enjoy hot springs and explore various restaurants, souvenir shops, and hotels.

The visitor center was closed in the middle of the golden week, like almost everything there. We tried to eat at yukemeri restaurant but the owner was unpleasant. It isn't worth to go there more than 10 minutes.😨

A beautiful location to go for the hot springs. It reminded me the scene from the movie Spirited away. Most beautiful at night, but if you want enter the hot springs then you have to go before noon, because it is closed to visitors who are not staying in the hotels after noon.

Completely worth the trip. Very beautiful in snow. Getting rooms here is very difficult. And if you want to see both day and night views, you need to bring a car & park all the way down at a rest area. The shuttle bus is very useful and carries you to & back. The area itself is pure eye candy in the snow.

Jogi Nyorai Saihoji Temple, also known as Jyoge San, is a renowned Buddhist temple with a rich history dating back 800 years. Legend has it that prayers for love and safe delivery are answered here. The temple was established by Taira no Sadayoshi to pray for war victims during a time of conflict.
Updated: I viisted on 3rd Jan 2022 again. Plenty of parking available. I ate fried Tofu again. Be careful of slippery road due to excess snowfall. You can also visit via public transportation (Bus). Enjoy the best meditation centre. Hope you get lucky with your beautiful wishes. Spread love, not COVID-19. . . One of the beautiful Buddhist temple with best location (about 40 min drive from Sendai station). I went there with my friends on 15 August 2020. We worshipped and walked around the temple complex. It was so serene and peaceful. Later, we ate famous aburage (fried tofu) and tounyuu (soya milk). It’s famous for firefly viewing some time of the year. And on the way, there are famous sight seeing spots (dam, park etc.). So highly recommended. -happy

Sendai Eki mae

Bus stop
Transportation
Mass Transportation Systems
Sendai Eki Nishiguchi is a bustling area located on the west side of Sendai Station in Japan. It is known for its vibrant atmosphere, with numerous shops, restaurants, and entertainment options to explore. Visitors can enjoy shopping for souvenirs, trying local cuisine at various eateries, and experiencing the lively energy of this district.
Good grief. An unsatisfactory experience by and large. As it turned out the best part was getting the combined Loople and subway ticket as we took 6 or 7 subways trips and the ticket paid for itself. The (rather cute-looking) Loople tram/buses are extremely poorly designed. Passenger comfort is long down the list of design features, and added to that is the insufficient size of the bus, and inadequate frequency of them. The map/brochure is outdated, and although attempts have been made (by hand) to alter the map it is still confusing. This “attraction” needs a major shake-up.
Steve K — Google review
If you wish to feel like a farm animal herded onto a truck to go to market, this bus is for you. Buy ticket, queue & wait, then squeezed into small space with minimal seating. To get out you need to fight your way to the front door. Stop away from the station are a lottery. Too many people already on the bus, you’re out of luck, wait for the next bus. Onboard commentary is minimal & not clearly heard above the vehicle noise. Do whatever it takes, just avoid this bus. Pay the extra get a taxi, especially to the castle ruins
Blue Y — Google review
They pack the bus full of people and still the bus stops on bus stops to take more people in. Very uncomfortable ride. The announcements and explanations were way shorter in English than in Japanese. I definitely do not recommend this bus. Maybe easier way to visit e.g. Sendai Castle is to take the subway (200 yen) from Sendai to International center and walk up to the castle if one likes to walk.
S K — Google review
Don’t take their bus! Use regular city bus 不要坐 会延误 If you use their bus, be ware that you might be waiting for much longer than the advertised intervals and not get a refund for missed trips caused by such insane long waits. I took their bus on a Sunday, when buses were supposed to come at 15 minute intervals. Instead, I waited at Sendai museum and Miyagi art museum station (stations 5 and 10) for 1 hr and 15 minutes (from 11:55 to 13:10) and no bus came. I ended up not going to Osaki Hachimangu shrine, a highlight of my planned trip, and had to delay my trip to Matsushima; I arrived at dawn with almost nothing to see. My holiday was for five days, which means that this 1.25 hrs was about 1/50 of my waking time during my holiday. When I finally had the time to go back and ask for a refund the company simply said “I can’t refund”. So that’s about it: don’t take their bus unless you want to risk messing up your plan.

It is a great way to visit several must-see tourism spot in Sendai. It is recommended to buy the one-day ticket. The staff can speak english very well. During the peak season however, people squeezed inside the bus in sendai Eki leaving many others waiting in-line. Yet the already fulfilled bus still open it doors to accept some passenger at the first stop in aobadori ichibancho eki.

They try to be traditionally Japanese by having an European style town bus. Yup, I know. Also, BE WARNED, the bus will be crowded at most times. You will squeeze in with local retirees and unhygienic Chinamen. Unfortunately, besides the taxi or walking, that is the only way to go to quite a few town attractions. If you want a relaxing sightseeing trip, choose somewhere else.
Rapiister — Google review
Full of people every time i took the bus. No air conditioner and very hot inside. They should leave every 10 mins or just use normal bus that has bigger size and plenty of seats. Poor management

Jozenji-dori Avenue is a stunning tree-lined street in Sendai, renowned for its majestic zelkova trees and captivating bronze sculptures. Stretching 700 meters from Nishi Park to Kotodai Park, this picturesque avenue offers a delightful blend of nature and urban life. Visitors can enjoy vibrant greenery in spring, colorful autumn leaves, and enchanting winter illuminations that create an inviting atmosphere year-round.
One of the best favorite streets in Japan. In all season you can enjoy landscape and the atmosphere of the forest city.

There is nothing much to see here except a densely tree-lined walkway with some sculptures. It is a nice walk, and from other's photo, it looks like the trees will be decorated with lights and they will light up when it's festive season. And that does look pretty impressive. Otherwise, I wouldn't waste time to come here unless you are already here for something else.

It is lined with shops selling high-end brands and cosmetics, as well as casual shops and izakaya bars. It gives the impression that a department store has been taken apart and sprinkled on a shopping street. There's also an arcade, so it's safe even on rainy days. Zuihōden, the final resting place of Date Masamune, stands as a testament to the rich history of Sendai and its most influential feudal lord. Constructed in 1637 by his successor, Lord Tadamune, this mausoleum showcases stunning Momoyama architectural style with vibrant carvings that capture the essence of the Edo Period.
June 24, 2025 Rain this morning but bus ride from Sendai Station no problem. Short walk up hill to Zuihoden. It was like going back in time
Lawrence G — Google review
Zuihoden was originally built in 1637 but due to war and other reasons, the current worship and memorial shrine was rebuilt in 1979 and repaired in 2001. It is the building complex of the burial chamber of Date Masamune, feudal lord and founder of modern Sendai city, and his heirs. The building complex is rich colorful splendid in design and elegantly painted, while outside roads to the Zuihoden are surrounded by tall trees and quasi forest. It seems that Zuihoden is more attractive, especially for foreign visitors, for area outside the worship hall, such as forest-style roads which have stylish beauty. On the contrary, the worship hall and grave inside is rather contemporary rebuilt with historical importance and meaning perhaps for local residents, but it may be a stranger historical anecdote which is less attractive for foreign visitors or even out-of-town Japanese visitors for remote association of the local lord. This reflection and comment are based on observation that fewer visitors took photos in front of Zuihoden worship hall and nearby building, while most visitors did have photo taking at forest-style roads. Compared to other tour attractions in Sendai, Zuihoden probably has the best bilingual explanation postings at its site, and it does help foreign visitors for viewing. The entrance ticket for Zuihoden is $570 Yen, although it can be reduced to $460 Yen for Sendai Loople ticket holder.

Good and light exercise uphill. Grave of Data Masamune along with more information of the next few generations of his family members. 🪦 Most of the buildings were destroyed during WWII, and these replicas are well preserved and restored post-war. English descriptions are mostly available.
Edward C — Google review
The fact that all of this site is a mausoleum for Date Masamune is astounding. Date Masamune, a powerful samurai and daimyō, who founded the city known as sendai. He was also so important that 20 people committed junshi upon his death to follow him into the afterlife. Unfortunately, many of the structures was destroyed during the firebombings in WW2, but have later been restored. Many of the buildings bears amazing color schemes and are filled with beautiful figures and decorations. The entrance fee was about 570 yen. There are also goshuin available here and they are nice. Very much recommend coming here.

It was majestic, both at the day and in the night (there was a Tanabata event, so it opened at night. Usually it opens until 4 or 5 pm I think). The buildings were majestic, and the museum, although small, was packed with knowledge. I am especially intrigued with how they could try to make the face of Masamune Date (and some other Date descendants) from his skull only. Anyways, it's a great, tranquil, majestic place to visit.
Valerie V — Google review
A informative grave of a very noble lord. The museum was only in Japanese, Chinese and Korean and so I didn't enter as I didn't want to translate everything. However the general atmosphere was relaxing, the grave was impressive and the cost was cheap. Fair warning, it's on a steep hill, if you have COPD or anything that makes walking uphill a task. Consider wisely! There is a carpark that's free and takes about half the hill away.
Conor M — Google review
Beautiful in autumn with the changing colours of the trees. It’s remarkable that it was re-built with so much care and eye for detail(s). When in Sendai, you should definitely visit
Stephan F — Google review
Well-worth a visit, Zuihoden is a beautiful and relaxing place, the entire site being the mausoleum of Date Masamune. Some buildings were reconstructed after the originals were burnt in the 1940s, but still lovely. This place is also not crowded with hoards of people; it's easy to walk around at a leisurely pace. Despite ot being early August, there were (surprisingly) no mosquitos either!

Aoba Castle Honmaru Hall, perched atop a hill, is a national historic monument that offers visitors a glimpse into Japan's feudal past. Originally founded in 1610 by the legendary Date Masamune, this site was strategically chosen for its defensive advantages and has since evolved into the well-organized city layout we see today. Although much of the castle was lost to fire and wartime destruction, remnants like stone walls still evoke its former grandeur.
Stunning view of Sendai. We stayed up there a while just enjoying the view 🥰 and left only because it got too cold.

Excellent option to visit some tourist attraction here in Sendai, there is no charge to enter to see the Aoba castle, there is a souvenir shop and a store to buy food at the top, although as a recommendation if you are going to climb it walking be in a bit of condition or in case of elderly adults bring a wheelchair, the views of the city are incredible 🏙️ 🌃 🌆 ⚔️ 🏰 🇯🇵
Carlos F — Google review
I was unfortunately disappointed with my visit to Sendai Castle. Hardly any elements have been restored. Therefore, there is not much to discover. There are lots of parking lots on the mountain. The shrine is quite beautiful and the view over the city is also quite good. However, the long journey on the tourist bus is not necessarily worth it.
Oskar V — Google review
Ruins of the Aoba castle: now also available with VR tour to get an idea of what the castle used to look like. On the grounds, there are plenty of places to have a bite, or look at the scenery (you can see as far as the ocean!). It's quite easy to walk up to the Aoba Castle grounds. Starting from the Sendai museum, there are several signs indicating the different routes you can take. Each are around 1km long.
Nathalie R — Google review
This place is huge with lots of spots (museums, gift shops, food stalls, temples, etc.) and it's free! The view of Sendai City from above and the Date Masamune statue are the main attractions of this place, imagining the sunset from up here must be very beautiful! You can get here via the Sendai loople for 260¥ one way, or you can walk from the Tohoku University Kawauchi campus for about 15-20 minutes.
A'isyah S — Google review
We stopped at the Sendai Castle area. We took the city bus and we would suggest for you to pay the day's pass instead of paying one stop with th IC card. Spend the day and be ready to hop on and hop off at the interesting sights. We went on Monday and unfortunately many of the sights were closed. The other downside was there were lots of tourists and not enough busses. Otherwise an ideal transportation as there are many ups and downs and quite difficult to walk the distance.
Susan L — Google review
The ruin itself was nothing spectacular. The view of Sendai was nice. It is worth to make a bus stop to have shot stop. But it is not worth to take a taxi to visit this site. It cost us 2000 Yen one way from city because the main entry was closed.
K C — Google review
Provides a nice view of the city but on the castle site itself is nothing to see except two statues. The shrine next to it is only okay too. The statues are facing north, meaning taking a picture from the front is going to be against the sunlight, very unfortunate.

Nestled in the picturesque Akiu region near Sendai, Akiu Great Falls is a breathtaking natural wonder that captivates visitors with its impressive 55-meter drop and 6-meter width. This stunning waterfall, recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls and designated as a National Scenic Beauty Spot, showcases the raw power of nature with its thunderous cascades. The surrounding area is equally enchanting, featuring vibrant fall foliage and several small shrines that add to the serene atmosphere.
Worth going, honestly not a long difficult trek but definitely some elevation in this especially if you're gonna attempt to head to the banks but this is worth it. Else you can park at the resting area, check it out from viewing point and drive down again if you're driving.
Jeremy T — Google review
Due to not enough water so the water fall was very minimal. Not much food store open in the morning so a bit disappointed for this trip.
J L — Google review
There are two places to view the falls; from above at the shrine and at the base. Two separate car parks and GMaps defaults to the shrine car park. After taking snaps from the viewing area, the base is a 10 minute walk (?) Or 700 meters away downhill. Just be mindful after walking down, you have to walk back up unless you drive down - there is a much smaller parking area near the base but there is still a bit of walking.
R ( — Google review
A excellent sightsee water fall with carpark, shops and restaurant around. You may also walk to the down stream along the trail for a while to enjoy the nice place and is able to reach a closer view point. There's lots of attractive around and is good for a car trip.

Beautiful waterfall and accessible amenities right nearby. Highly recommend the short (but somewhat steep) trek down to the riverbank near the base of the waterfall. It’s majestic up close.
Beltain J — Google review
Loved this short hike. You can actually park closer to the falls if you want to go all the way down. It’s the parking by the bridge. Instead of going to the parking lot itself. But for me I didn’t mind the longer hike. It takes around 30 mins to get down and up round trip. There’s a temple and also some shops you can buy dango and fish from. The trail itself is well maintained. Love this experience.

Rissyakuji Temple, also known as Yamadera or the Mountain Temple, is a centuries-old Buddhist temple located on a mountaintop outside of Yamagata City. The temple was founded in the 9th century and has been visited by famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho. To reach the temple, visitors must climb 1,100 steps along a mountain path that offers panoramic views. The temple is especially beautiful during autumn when the leaves change color.
This is a great spot to stop for a few hours on your way through the area (3 to 4 hours of plenty to visit and grab a bite in the town). Spectacular views from various points on the trek up. I recommend leaving your backpack at a locker as it can be pretty humid in among the trees on the climb and I was glad to have less with me.

This has been one of my most favorite places to visit in Japan so far. It is an absolutely magical place! We went on a drizzly day, so the raindrops and mist added to the mysterious quality of the location. There were so many stairs to climb- but a lot of places to step to the side, take a break, and look at the surrounding beauty. Moss covered statues, beautiful temples, and little shops skirted the path up the mountain. The grounds were in pristine condition and so clean. The view from the top was amazing!! I was under the impression dogs are not normally permitted on temple grounds but we saw (and heard) many dogs during our visit. There are many areas outside of the temple grounds to purchase food and souvenirs. There are also some paid parking lots nearby.

For foliage /momiji reference, these pictures were taken on October 22nd. Great place to slowly enjoy, but too soon for color change. If this area was in Kyoto it would be so crowded with tourists because of its beauty, but it still gives a untouched kind of place vibe. 2 hours should be enough to take your time going up and appreciate yhe nature, statues and local architecture

You’ll find plenty of paid parking at the base of Risshaku-ji temple, and it’s only about 500 yen. The view from the top of the mountain is absolutely stunning! The photo I took was taken in early November, so you can already see some trees starting to turn red and yellow. There are quite a few stairs to climb to the top, so if you walk up without stopping, it should take around 20-30 minutes.

Risshaku-ji Temple (Yamadera) was honestly one of the most impressive places I visited on this trip. From the moment I started climbing the long stone steps, I already felt that it was going to be special. The path winds through the forest, past small shrines and statues, and you can hear the sound of the bell and the wind in the trees as you go up – it’s very peaceful and a little bit magical. I visited in autumn and the colours were incredible: bright yellow, orange, and red leaves covering the mountains on all sides. Every few minutes I had to stop just to turn around and look at the view again. By the time I reached the top, the panorama over the valley and villages below completely took my breath away. It looks like a picture from a postcard, but standing there in person feels even better. The climb is a bit tiring, but not too difficult, and there are many spots where you can rest and enjoy the scenery. In the end I felt that every step was worth it. I left Yamadera feeling calm, happy, and very satisfied that I made the effort to come. If you are anywhere near Yamagata, I really recommend visiting – you won’t be disappointed.

This a very famous temple with many tourists in the area. Nonetheless the many steps to the top are well worth the effort. The view is spectacular and the temple beautiful. But you will not be able to enjoy the temple alone as there are loads of tourists visiting. Still very worth the trip.
Bull D — Google review
1000 stair steps to reach the top. Admission fee for an adult is 500 yen. We recommend going up earlier than 11 AM because of many tourists visiting this place later on. It is worth the view as well as to embrace the beauty of the little forrest around the trail up. At the top you can expect a shrine and a little shop with drinks if you feel exhausted. The people are friendly and forthcoming despite the masses of tourists.
Ivo V — Google review
Be prepared for the need to walk up and down lots of steps to reach the top. It's a 1015-steps climb. There were however different levels for a stoppage and short rest. The fall foliage was still amazing along this pilgrimage route.

Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a charming mountain village near Sendai city, offering natural hot springs and stunning winter scenery. The area is known for its abundant snowfall, creating a picturesque landscape with snow-covered trees and unique ice sculptures. As the oldest hot spring in the Tohoku Region, Zao Hot Spring provides an authentic experience of traditional Japan amidst nature and old villages. Visitors can enjoy skiing on slopes suitable for all skill levels and then relax in outdoor hot springs at a reasonable price.
visited Zao Onsen Ski Resort and went all the way up to the top – it was freezing, but absolutely worth it. The wind was cold, snow all around, and everything was covered in a soft white mist that made the whole place feel almost magical. Even though I couldn’t stay outside for too long, the views and atmosphere were beautiful and unforgettable. If you don’t mind the cold, it’s definitely a spot you should experience at least once.

A frustrating experience at this open ski area. It’s easy to get lost, and I somehow managed to lose my cell phone in the process. There are too many flat areas where you’re forced to take off your snowboard and walk—definitely not ideal. The weather didn’t help, and to top it off, there were way too many non-skiers taking the cable car up just for photos, blocking the way for those of us trying to actually ski. Not the best place for serious snow sports enthusiasts!

A Paradise of Snow Monsters and Winter Adventures If you’re traveling to Yamagata in winter, Zao Onsen Ski Resort is a must-visit destination. The resort offers a diverse range of courses for all levels from gentle slopes to tight tree runs Get into the Zao Rope Way Sanrokusen for Juhyo Kogen station where you can have some fun with the snow. From Juhyo Kogen Station get into the Zao Rope Way Sanchosen and you will reach to the top(around 1661m). In you way you can see the Snow Monsters JFYI: there might be strong winds at the top so make sure to be prepared with proper wears and shoes. For skiers/snowboarders: the resort is huge and it’s easy to get lost. So have a course map with you. For snowboards : there are lots of flat areas where you have to remove your snowboard and walk for the next lift. Access: Get a bus from Yamagata Station to Zao Onsen. A one way ticket will cost around 1200Yen

The resort is incredible. 🎿 It has several slopes of varying difficulty so you can learn or try somersaults. The staff's attention is unbeatable. Long live Japan ♥️ ❄️ ⛄️

Best experience in Japan. You have to check the weather first. On a fine day, the monster are visible and you can play with snow. We took the ropeway. There are 2 station on the way. Last one is the main spot to see the mighty snow monster. There is also ski area and onsen area. Ropeway round trip price is around 4200 yen. At night there are some illumination also. It was freezing ❄️ cold. Must wear snow boots and take heat patch. It will helpful to survive 😅. Once in a life time experience as Yamagata has one of the highest snowfall area. For ski, pre booking is must. There are restaurant on the last stop. On the first floor, one suvenior shop is there. Vending machine is available to buy hot drinks. Washroom facilities are also in good condition. 10/10 ( as i get the perfect views and nice weather ) in

Discover a hidden gem of a ski resort that offers an extraordinary experience! This resort is a paradise for ski enthusiasts who appreciate pristine snow conditions, breathtaking scenic views, and unique local features. The ski tracks are beautifully maintained, nestled among majestic snow-covered trees, and the resort’s distinctive tree monsters add a whimsical charm to the landscape. Unlike the busier and more commercialized ski destinations, this resort provides a tranquil escape, ensuring that the slopes are less crowded and the overall experience is more intimate. Its budget-friendly nature, compared to more popular resorts like Niseko, makes it an excellent choice for those seeking value without compromising on quality. A useful tip for future visitors: remember to carry cash, as many of the cozy, on-site restaurants prefer it over card payments. While the resort boasts an ample number of ski coaches, travelers should be aware that English communication may be limited. Despite this, the friendly and accommodating staff ensures a welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone. Overall, if you’re in search of an authentic ski getaway where you can connect with the essence of winter sports in a serene and picturesque setting, this resort is an unbeatable choice. Don’t miss out on this less-trodden winter wonderland!

This a great ski resort, especially for beginners and sightseeing. There are some advanced hills, but not many so this isn't the place to come for big thrills. The beginner slopes are great for learning though! There's a lot of long, simple runs. Also, a lift ticket isn't much more expensive than a ropeway ticket so if you want to see the snow monsters you might as well go skiing too. Only real complaint is some awkward flat/uphill spots here and there that required me to take off my skis and walk a couple times.
Michael M — Google review
Exceptionally beautiful ski/board course. The trees look magical covered in snow. Has several beginner areas. The panoramic route through the snow monsters is amazing. Although there are a lot of flat areas in between. Free shuttle Buses run between the gondolas till evening. Gondolas stop operating a bit early so plan otherwise. You can take a gondola to the top with a separate ticket as well. Illumination was cancelled the night i went due to bad weather.

Okama, also known as Zao Okama, is a stunning emerald volcanic crater lake located on the Zao Mountains in Japan. It can be reached by road, hiking trail, or ski lift and offers rewarding views to those who make it to the top. The lake is famous for its ever-changing colors depending on the angle of sunlight and is surrounded by unique alpine dicentra flowers.
Took a ropeway from the zao village to the top and hiked for about one hr to reach the top. The hike is easy and scenic. The weather got too foggy as we reached the peak near the crater. So the view was blocked. It’s also quite windy up there.
Hanupya N — Google review
We arrived Okama on May 2nd as goldenweek holiday in Japan! We can drive up to the top by paying a ticket (800 yen per 1 car) It’s colder than we think, and the Okama is still full of snow!

The caldera lake is much larger in real, and it really leaves an impression. The altitude of the carpark is 1771 metres, so the mountain air is still refreshingly cool in midsummer.

Fantastic experience visiting Okama. Parked at the visitor center entrance, with a fee of Y550. Took us ~2 hours to hike up to the peak and to see the stunning views. Along the way to the peak, you would already see amazing views of the Gokishinuma (5 colored pond) that was caused by volcanic activities in the past. Definitely recommend to go!

Okama looks absolutely gorgeous in the early to mid April period, when the snow is partially covering the surrounding slopes, partly showing the brown earth below. Under a blue sky, this 残雪 (Zansetsu) scene offer in my opinion one of the best view of Okama. These are photos were taken at 13/4/2024 after a 45min hike from the Zao Jizo Sancho Station 蔵王ロープウェイ 地蔵山頂駅. Something to take note of: (1) the last descending cable car leave at 4:45pm at this time of the year, (2) The trails are mostly covered under loose melting snow, those trail without snow are very muddy. Although I did it with just a gaiter and not fully waterproof shoe, I would strongly suggest good waterproof shoe, gaiter, snowshoe or trekking pole. (3) You can find the gps route and more hiking info from Yamap. (4) These photos were shot at the viewpoint just to the east of Kumanodake 熊野岳 which I think offer better scenery at this time of year compared to the more southern viewpoints.

I’ve skied at Zao several times, but this was my first summer visit. I have always wanted to hike and see Okama, and I would recommend this spot if you can. We drove up in a personal vehicle, but there are hiking trails and a chair lift a bit below the uppermost parking lot if you’re not driving. We also saw some cyclists biking up! There are many great hikes around, and of course, you can see the famous snow monsters without their snow!

It's a great place to visit. Emerald lake in volcano crater looks so magic.Amazing view from top of mountain. But Weather may be really unpredictable. So be aware about it and ready for any case. There are many ways to reach the place:by car, by free shuttle, by rope way or hiking. Parking place usually gets full very quickly,it's better to come before 10am. Hiking courses to the Okama crater are very good for any age and conditions. Never have try so enjoyable course.

Zaō Fox Village is a must-visit attraction in Japan. This park boasts free-roaming red foxes and features a gift shop and petting area with ponies and rabbits. The sight of foxes running around freely between red tori gates is truly amazing. The large fenced-in area allows visitors to take photos of the foxes, but petting them is strictly prohibited as they may bite.
I surprisingly enjoyed this. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about it, but the foxes were very well cared for and still quite clearly wild animals. The staff seemed to genuinely interested to keep them safe and healthy. It was amazing to be so close to them. Most of them were sleeping, but they are just so beautiful and the area where you can feed them is quite open fascinating creatures. Lots of necessary rules and 99% of the guests I saw there were following them carefully.
Lauren S — Google review
It was my first time getting up close with foxes, and they were absolutely adorable! When I visited, most of the foxes were sunbathing, and I was lucky to arrive in time for the fox-holding activity, where I got to take a photo with one. The staff kindly used my phone to take the pictures. The park is well-organized and well-maintained, with clean surroundings. In the open area where you can walk among the foxes, there’s a slight natural fox smell, but it’s not strong. Overall, it’s one of the nicest fox villages I’ve been to—I highly recommend visiting. It’s more convenient if you drive there rather than taking public transportation.

Visiting Fox Village in Zao was such an unforgettable experience! My kids were absolutely thrilled to walk among the foxes—it felt like something straight out of a storybook. The adults had the chance to hold the foxes (for a small fee), while the kids got to pet them safely as we held them, which made it extra special for the whole family. The foxes were adorable, and the staff made everything feel fun and safe. I highly recommend this experience for both families and animal lovers—it’s truly one of a kind!
Trevor S — Google review
The foxes are so cute!! They curled up when they sleep and the way the stretch is just so adorable!! Sadly, you are unable to pet the fox as they are still wild animals, with chances of them attacking being there. However, they normally mind their own business as long as you don’t get too close. They just wander around you. There is a feeding session and a hugging session but I was there too early so I didn’t managed to catch that. It’s a very mesmerising time to just see animals I don’t ever get to see in my day to day life. You do need to drive up to the village, but it’s very worth the trip up.
Oon K — Google review
I went on a Thursday (they're closed on Wednesdays). I think their website is a bit out of date with admission pricing, but as of this posting, admission fee is ¥1500, and if you want to hold one of the foxes, it's an additional ¥1000. I'm not sure what their timing is for the holding sessions, but there are designated times. There is also a bus that is going to the village twice a day from Siroishizao Station or Siroishi Station, and it makes a couple other stops along the way. As long as you make note of their departure times, it should be all good. The timetable is located in the Fox Village Website. Overall, I'm glad I went and got to hold one of the fuzzballs with their Halloween costumes on, but being that it was about 2pm, I think a lot of the foxes were tired and mostly sleeping. Still cute though. And seeing rural Japan along the way is also interesting to see.
Amanda B — Google review
Very interesting experience seeing the foxes roam freely. These foxes do bite, so care must be taken to follow the instructions on what not to do, and not stay too long in one spot. Each child must be accompanied by one adult. No picking up the foxes or selfies allowed.
Catherine C — Google review
My Fiancé and I are obsessed with foxes and this was a must see for us. Where we live in B.C. Canada its nearly impossible to see a real fox this up close and personal. We made the long trek up to Shiroshi just to see these little furry cuties and it was worth all the time and effort involved. We stayed for almost two hours following the little fur balls around and taking photos. We even got to feed them little treats! We didn't want to leave!
Marshall C — Google review
Visited on a sunny day at May. There's only limited bus to access the village, so you need to check when you plan to go, or else you have to take taxi. The village is big, spending around 2 hrs to walk around and take photos of fox. Most of foxes are sleeping, but it can't stop their cuteness, very adorable. There are some foxes lives in the cage which is prohibited from photo taking. Also there's cuddle fox session at 11 am, you need to wear 2 wind breaker jackets which are provided by the facility. Staff would pass the fox randomly and let you carry it for like 5 mins, and then take many photos for you. It's a precious moment. There's a souvenir shop at the end of the tour. You can ask the staff to book a taxi if you don't want to waste time for next bus.

Shiroishi Castle is a restored 16th-century castle known for its armor and weapons displays, as well as samurai battle reenactments. Originally built in the twelfth century, it was renovated with stone walls and a tower by the Gamo clan in 1591. Later, it became associated with the Katakura family, retainers under the Date clan.
Wow what an amazingly well restored castle tower and well maintained grounds we only had a few hours but could easily take an entire day and not fully see it all.

Not the best castle but in terms of crowd it's the least I'd say, very good to take your time to view and photograph. Also the castle stamp is inside.

A rather small castle, but with a very nice view of the city. The exhibition inside is rather modest as well. Surrounding park has a lot of Sakura and is really pretty, though. Do not buy the bundle ticket for ¥800 as it includes a some cinema just in Japanese. However, the Samurai Residence is a nice addition.

Shiroishi Castle is a city castle in Shiroishi City, and it is a rebuild of the castle which was damaged in war. Original Castle was built in 1591 and continued in use until 1871; then, when Meiji Emperor ended Endo Shogunate, in 1874, Meiji Emperor ordered abolishment of the feudal or shogun castles, and it included Shiroishi Castle. Current Shiroishi Castel was rebuilt in 1995 with wood material and traditional techniques, and it is integrated with a city park with an upgrading of lawn and other green improvement. Shiroishi Castle is included as one of 100 Castles in Japan. However, because it is a rebuilt from 1995, it is extremely new. For visitors to the Shiroishi Castle, they may feel going to park with a new building, instead of going to a historical architecture. It is really a completely different feeling or experience for visiting and stopping at this newly built castle when it is compared to Himeji Castle or Hikone Castle. If visitors want to enjoy classic and/or historical architecture, a castle, then, Shiroishi Castle is probably NOT the right one for you. But if visitors want to see and feel the re-build effort of Japanese castle, then, maybe, it is a good choice. There is bathroom inside Castle-park area. The entrance fee for adult is $ 400 Yen and visitors should buy tickets via Ticket machines outside Castle entrance.

Traditional style castle (rebuilt) with a great view of the city and various info cards displayed around describing the history. You can scan the QR codes on them for an English translation. It’s 300JPY to get in, or you can pay 800JPY for an “all access” pass which includes the castle, samurai village/hut which is about a kilometre away, and a 3D showing. Be careful going up and down the stairs, they are very steep and since you cannot wear shoes inside will be quite slippery on socks. Just around the corner to the castle is a small shrine you can visit. Basic amenities such as vending machines and toilets are available

(Translated by Google) I visited on September 13, 2025. This shrine has deep ties to the Soma clan, a rare feudal domain that remained unchanged from the Kamakura period until the end of the Edo period. As its name suggests, "Myoken" (Myoken), a uniquely Japanese belief in Myoken, which deifies the North Star and the Big Dipper, is dedicated to Amenominakanushi, who, according to the Kojiki (Records of Ancient Matters), is said to have been the first deity to appear after the creation of the world. The torii gate is beautifully framed in a vibrant blue, and the main shrine, located on a hilltop, is impressive when viewed from below. The entire grounds were enveloped in a refreshing atmosphere, making for a pleasant visit. The goshuin (temple seal) was handwritten, featuring powerful brushstrokes. It's one of my favorites, perfectly complementing the shrine's atmosphere. The Soma clan is said to have descended from Taira no Masakado (there are various theories), and because they valued horses as a form of military power, the "Soma Nomaoi" festival, held in May, is said to be the world's greatest horse festival. Because it's quite far away, it's difficult to visit during the festival season, but when you hear that it's a grand festival with over a thousand years of history, it's definitely something you'd want to experience at least once. 2026 is particularly auspicious, falling in the year of the Fire Horse, symbolizing energy, passion, and independent spirit. We hope you'll time your visit to coincide with this time.

The main hall, offering hall, and worship hall were built in 1643, and are designated as "Important Cultural Properties of Japan" as representative ancient architecture of the Soma region. I visited to pray. The shrine is home to horses and elephants scattered throughout the grounds. Two sacred horses welcomed us near the torii gate. There were also cute small horse elephants at the temizuya (purification fountain). The steps leading up to the worship hall are lined with horse-head statues on both sides, which are cool but also add to the solemn atmosphere. The worship hall is a magnificent and tasteful structure. It is surrounded by bamboo and cedar, and the sound of cicadas is soothing. I was able to pray and explore in peace and quiet. Looking at photos and the internet, it looks like it would be a beautiful place to visit during the cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, and it's also where the Okuridashi ceremony of the traditional Soma Nomaoi event is held, so I think it's a shrine with a lot to see throughout the year. Nature & Parks
Hanamiyama Park is a picturesque suburban mountain park famous for its vibrant seasonal floral displays and stunning sakura cherry blossoms. Located in Fukushima, the park offers breathtaking landscapes during spring and autumn. Visitors can explore the easy mountain paths adorned with pink plum and cherry blossoms while enjoying views of snow-covered mountains in the distance. Additionally, the park features various flower varieties, making it an enjoyable destination throughout spring and summer. Shuttle buses are available from Fukushima Station to reach the park easily.
Date of enjoyment: 12/4/25 Came here on a weekend and it was madness, but organised chaos. We can’t park in the usual car parks, we had to go to another carpark ( free of charge) which is well directed and signed, then pay for a ticket 500 yen and catch a bus to visit hanamiyama park from the car park which is a short 10min bus ride. Do come early and once you arrive at the park, the walk towards all the plantations is stunning and it’s all maintained by locals. There were heaps of varieties of Sakura and they were in full bloom, truly a stunning sight and hayfever at its max. We decided to walk the longest trek which took roughly 60mins and rewarded with the view at the mountain top of Fukushima city. The walk back down the hill was also pleasant and there was a matsuri food stalls at the end of it all, you can spend about 2-3 hours at this venue which is great value for a 500yen ticket.

Nice park. Free entry. Was under maintenance during my visit. The coloured tracks are easy to follow, but if you head off towards the "observatory" you'll likely not see much else. I walked for a couple of hours following poorly marked signed which lead nowhere in particular. Nice and peaceful, but with a lot of tree cover blocking most of the views.
Jesse T — Google review
There are not many flowers in the summer time. But tree trails and the chirping cicadas makes u embrace the natural environment. Three are 30, 45, 60 mins courses. We took the 60 one. It’s easy to walk. But seems not well maintained, may cause by the off season.
C J — Google review
We visited on a rainy day but the rain cleared and we got to see all the wonderful blossoms (16th April). We did the 60 minute walking loop, there is a 30 and a 45 minute loop too. I enjoyed the 60 minute loop as you get a beautiful view from the top of the hill. As it was a rainy day it was not busy, but I can imagine it gets very busy.
Lily G — Google review
Amazing place! There are several varieties of flowers beyond cherry blossoms, so the park can be enjoyed throughout a long time during spring (also summer when it's hydrangea season). Since the name of the park suggests it is a mountain, so expect some hiking. The walk to the summit may take around one hour (a bit longer if you stop to admire the flowers and take some pictures). The view from the top is really nice. You're able to appreciate Fukushima city from above while surrounded by flowers. No fees are needed to enter the park. Went there on the 6th of April 2024.
A R — Google review
I went there during the full cherry blossom bloom on April 10, 2025. I spent half a day there, and it was bursting with vibrant colors—not just pink! Highly recommended!
Putida P — Google review
Visited on Tuesday 8 April 2025. Beautiful weather in the morning for the astounding views. We did the 60min course which was not a problem for those without walking issues. Only one slightly short steep slope downhill towards the last part. They had some walking poles at the start of the course. There was quite a Q at the bus stop. So since there were 3 of us, we took a taxi (¥1800 per trip) from the Fukushima East exit. We showed them the pamphlet which we took from the Tourist Office at Fukushima station. The bus is ¥500 return. It was full bloom during our visit. Praise the Lord.
Lee E — Google review
Really enjoyed the park and festivities. Quite crowded. However there is a hill to the left when looking at hanamiyama that has just as many if not more flowers and less crowds. Enjoyed that more even though both were great. Parking was really far away and you’re charged 500¥ pp for the return bus but it was well organised and caused little delay. Expected with crowds

Nihonmatsu Castle Ruins is a picturesque park famous for its spring cherry blossoms and 14th-century castle remnants. The site offers a serene atmosphere to reflect on the region's history, contrasting the darkness of the Boshin War. Visitors can enjoy a chrysanthemum festival in fall and explore English signage that explains notable ruins. Additionally, there are markets offering fresh food and traditional treats like shoyaki taiyaki.
simply underrated. there were a few people here and there hence you get to really enjoy the place. there was a tree stump of a pine or sequioa tree (not too sure) but its fragrance traveled throughout one side of the park. a little treat from all the walking and mini hike. also got to see a bit of snow cap from a neighboring mountain range.
Dom — Google review
Not a good place to visit if you are not driving. I drove all the way up to the public parking which was a rather small patch and the roads going up was narrow as well. There wasn’t any castle structures left and some of the pics displayed here referred to another castle park nearby. Good views even when it was a rainy day when I visited.

Nestled in the heart of Japan, the Abukuma Caves offer an enchanting adventure for those eager to explore nature's wonders. Discovered in September 1969, this limestone cave network stretches over 3,000 meters, with around 700 meters open to visitors.
Very cool experience just make sure to not carry much luggage inside. Very much worth to take the other extra adventure route.

Highly recommend the cave walk. May not be too suitable if you do have difficulty in tight spaces and low visibility / slippery floors.

i highly recommend this place. we went ther on yearend vacation still not crowded at all. cave history is so amazing. and walking though it was very exciting. there are some path which is bit complex than others and one can choose which path they want to take. we went with very young baby(one is 2years old and another is 7months). it is not imposible to visit here with baby but quite tough on some point. but my older daughter really enjoyed.

Gorgeous. Amazing place to visit. In the summer, The temperature inside is around 15 C. So it's advisable to bring warm clothes. Some places are slippery. Be ready and beer careful. It's good to go during uncrowded period. Because visitors have to go in queue in this cave. So you can't wait if there are lots of people waiting behind. Several places are very big caves. Maybe bigger than normal 2 story house. You can wait and take some special photos. Outside the are shops to buy souvenirs, drinks or to have meal. Ticket price for adult is around thousand yen as I remember. It's worthy. Good luck
Rasanja R — Google review
Totally fun place to explore, although it tends to be crowded. The extra cost exploration course is worth it but a word of caution: some spaces are extremely narrow and low. Please take heed of the physical restrictions as well as possible claustrophobia. The normal course is more friendly on a general level.

Miharu Takizakura

Historical landmark
Miharu Takizakura, a breathtaking cherry tree over 1,000 years old, is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Japan's natural beauty. Known as 'Waterful Cherry Blossoms,' this magnificent red weeping cherry tree boasts an impressive trunk circumference of 11 meters and is recognized as one of the three largest cherry trees in the country. Designated as a national treasure, it attracts visitors from all around during its blooming season from mid to late April.
The most amazing cherry blossom tree I have ever seen in my entire life!!! The tree is HUGE and it is over a thousand years old. It is 100% worth staying until after sunset to enjoy it also during the night since it is illuminated. The entire area around the tree itself is also really enjoyable with plenty of other beautiful flowers to view and many food options. I went there on the 15th of April 2024 and the flowers had just started to wither away, but it was still beautiful. A 500¥ fee is charged from entering the area.
A R — Google review
We visited Miharu Takizakura on March 31st 2025. It was still too cold and the trees were still ‘sleeping.’ I came here 8 year years ago. It was fully blooming and it was beautiful. There were some other somei yoshino sakura on the hill. There is a park fee during the sakura season. Some food stalls sell delicious food. According to local people this weeping cherry trees have been standing for more than 1000 years, the height is 13,5 meters and the diameter is 9,5 meters. The local people have been taking care of the tree. After getting off at Fukushima station, I rent a car and drove to Miharu Takizakura.
Edelweiss47 S — Google review
During our visit on March 31, 2025, this location, home to an estimated 1000+ year-old Cherry blossom tree over 12 meters tall, unfortunately showed no signs of cherry blossoms yet. The temperature remained quite chilly, between 2-6°C.
Merry M — Google review
We visited Miharu Takizakura last month as a couple, and it was truly one of the most magical experiences of our trip to Japan. This ancient cherry blossom tree is absolutely breathtaking in full bloom - the cascading pink petals really do look like a waterfall of flowers. The atmosphere was peaceful and respectful, with visitors quietly admiring the beauty and history of this 1,000-year-old natural treasure. The surrounding countryside added to the charm, and the locals were so kind and welcoming. Everything was well organized, from parking to walking paths, and there were small food stalls offering local treats. It felt like stepping into a fairytale. We were both deeply moved by the serenity and beauty of the place. If you're in Japan during sakura season, this is an absolute must-see. It’s a memory we’ll cherish forever. Highly recommended for couples and nature lovers alike.
Hannah Z — Google review
No doubt on why this place has become no.1 sakura spot in Fukushima prefecture. Lot people, lot of vehicles and rush during the peak season. Entrance ticket is ¥500. From some car parks, there was a shuttle bus service, difficult to find nearby car parks. Lovely place, unique beauty. Worth seeing historical Takizakura tree. Few snack shops around, can try several snacks such as ice cream, takoyaki, curry bun etc.

So grateful if the nice weather Today the cherry had 50% blossom in the morning and full blossom at 11am?😂

It's worth a 15 min detour trip which costs 300 yen per person. The ambience is nice with spring in full bloom. The place is the site of a big and old sakura tree surrounded by eateries and you can buy sakura plants from here as well.
Divya D — Google review
Amazing! This 1,000 year old sakura, which is declared one of Japan’s 3 great cherry trees in 1922, still stands big and tall as of today. It’s such a moving and awestruck experience when you see this tree before your eye. Many thanks to Miharu community and those who have supported to protect and preserve this amazing cherry tree! I wish this sakura another thousand years to come.

Kaiseizan Park is a stunning destination that beautifully showcases the changing seasons, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers and families alike. Established during the Meiji Era, this expansive park features over 1,300 cherry trees that create a breathtaking spectacle in spring when they bloom along the pathways. The park also boasts a serene lake and various athletic stadiums, providing ample opportunities for recreation.
Excellent park all around and it is adorned with Pokemon!! I was here when sakura was in full bloom but was raining. So the minus is the rain but the plus is it was literally empty, so taking an umbrella to enjoy the sakura alone is mesmerizing! Plus the rain drops make for wonferful reflection photos! Definitely worth a revisit when the weather is better but all experiences are worthwhile and this is one where you have no requirements to Photoshop any one out of your pictures because simply put there is no one there to ruin you and the sakura!!

There is also a steam locomotive on the spacious grounds. There is also a Pokemon Lucky themed park in one area, which is fun.

Fukuroda Falls is a renowned natural wonder in Japan, often considered one of the country's top three waterfalls. Its impressive 120-meter height and 73-meter width are divided into four levels, offering breathtaking views. The site features a tunnel leading to viewing platforms and an elevator to the top, making it easily accessible for visitors. Throughout the year, Fukuroda Falls showcases different forms of beauty, from vibrant autumn foliage to a spectacular frozen ice fall in winter.
Very nice and unique waterfall which can be viewed from a vantage point ( fee 300 yen ) and also a free viewing point where you don’t get to see the full frontage. Nice place to take a slow walk, would have been nicer if the autumn colors are in full bloom. We visited on 5 Nov and it was too early. There are lots of parking available, ranging from free parking further away to 500 yen for the prime ones near the falls.

Amazing place! Even though it was pouring it down it was still good. The path to the falls is a tunnel with atmospheric lights and sounds. The top section is access by an elevator but the very very top has a few stairs to climb (with no roof). Parking is 500 yen and the falls ticket is another 500. 15 minute walk from the car park to the falls.

The Ryujin Big Suspension Bridge is a popular tourist destination in Japan, offering visitors the thrill of bungee jumping from its height of 100 meters above a forested ravine and Ryujin Lake. However, visitors should be cautious as thefts are common even inside parked cars. Unfortunately, there are no security cameras installed yet. While the view is stunning, some may find the cost of crossing the bridge to be too expensive for what it offers.
The Ryujin Suspension Bridge spans the gorge above the Ryujin Dam. It's an impressive structure - large and solidly built, making it easy and comfortable to walk across. The surrounding scenery is beautiful, especially with colorful koinobori (carp-shaped windsocks) flown across the gorge beside the bridge. It’s a spot worth adding to your itinerary.
