Water & Amusement Parks
Mitsuse Le Vert Farm Dongurimura Village, also known as "Acorn Village," is a great spot for family activities. The admission fee is very affordable, and there are plenty of animals to interact with, including the opportunity to pet them, feed them, and even take pony rides.
It is a good place to spend time with kids. The train is not found nowadays, but there are some animals to enjoy. Kids can feed ponies and goats with their own hands. There are vending machines for buying feed with 100 yen. You can ride big horses. There is also a small room for tiny animals like panda mice, guinea pigs, and hares. You can feed them, too. At the last, don't forget to wash the hands!
Nazmul H — Google review
It's a nice place for family activities. There are plenty of animals you can pet, feed, sometimes get a ride. An admission fee is super inexpensive. Facilities are runnung down but there's no problem. We made chicken sausage, fed and petted animals, eat lunch at a restaurant, got a pony ride for my son, had a great time.
Fukuo O — Google review
A dream place to go with younger kids! Goats, horses, rabbits and the likes in a very relaxing place. Icing on the cake, nothing is overpriced.
Christophe M — Google review
It seems the animals are well treated. They are all very friendly (except the horses but that's due to their natural character). Really cheap too! Also the 200 yen to enter the petting zoo area is worth it!

The park comprises an entrance zone with video facilities and restaurants, a southern wing where high-level individuals are believed to have lived, a northern wing associated with the Kuni festival, a bunker settlement zone spanning approximately 20 hectares and featuring three areas, and the Ancient Hara Zone offering various recreations.
Very nice open air museum / park. The signs were translated in english and a nice volunteer guide came to explain some of the history of the place. I saw many families and I agree it's a nice activity for kids, they will love being able to enter the houses.
Sophie K — Google review
Phenomenal. So many staff around to guide people. The park is unbelievably clean and well kept. The structures are really authentically recreated and you can enter most of them. They have some museums and other things to do inside the park as well. One of the coolest things I’ve come across in Kyushu.

Yoshinogari Historical Park, Kanzaki-gun, Saga-ken Have you ever wondered about the fascinating history of Yayoi & Jomon? The yoshinogari archaeological site of excavation, preservation & ruins holds some unspoken secrets waiting to be discovered. Let’s dive into the past and uncover the mysteries that have been hidden for centuries! You can learn about the history of this place by visiting it. It’s a fascinating place indeed. Opening hours: 9:00 Am to 17:00 Entrance Fee: Ranges from 460¥ There are museum programs where you can learn to make fire and crafting accessories and knives. Magama bead making-250¥ You can check their website for more information and programs. Website: yoshinogari.jp/en/
Kian M — Google review
The park is way bigger than one would expect (maybe) and if you love history, certainly make your way out here. They even have workshops and I loved the one I joined because I love stones. Seeing the Yayoi life in the past was a good experience. You can walk around the park to check out the old houses and the ancient burial. There is a roving bus. There’s a big part of the park that’s good for kids (or so the guide at the community center told me because I didn’t explore that part). Worth visiting!
Bernadette G — Google review
Relaxing day out from Fukuoka. There’s not a lot of detailed information in English, but the site is very interesting, don’t miss the burial mound. Beautiful views as well.
Chloe A — Google review
It's an extremely large area. The train is about the same distance from Yoshinogari Koen Station or Kanzaki Station. I want to be prepared to walk steadily. It feels good when the weather is nice. You can learn about jar coffins. The experience center is also fun.
Youji N — Google review
Plentiful of open spaces and historical artifacts built to scale. A fun place for the family amidst nature. The park is huge. For a start, take the free shuttle bus to go round the park. Then select places of specific interest to you. Bring along food for a small picnic (there are also provisions for BBQ on site) as the restaurant maybe fully booked up. Enjoy!
Shirley N — Google review
Very cool experience for a visit to the museum or to just have a picnic in the park. The grounds are beautiful and they have daily activities that you can do for an additional fee. Also, they have multiple paid parking lots around the place. It’s huge so plan to do a lot of walking.

Tosu Premium Outlets

Mentioned on
4 lists
Outlet mall
Shopping
Factory Outlets
Tosu Premium Outlets, located in Tosu City, Saga Prefecture, is a modern shopping center that opened in 2004. It's known for its easy accessibility from various parts of Kyushu and offers over 170 international and Japanese high-end brands. The outlet features a spacious parking lot and is particularly lively on holidays.
We spent a day exploring Tosu Premium Outlets, and it turned out to be a surprisingly fun part of our Kyushu road trip. Right off the expressway, the parking was huge and free, so unloading bags and diving into stores was a breeze. The open-air layout really impressed us. Everything is set out like a Southern California town—bright white walls, terracotta roofs, and palm-lined walkways. It just feels fresh and airy, a nice change from the usual indoor malls. The weather was lovely too, which made walking from shop to shop feel like a mini vacation. With around 170 brands spread across several categories, we found everything we needed—Western luxury labels like Coach and Michael Kors, sports brands like Nike, and even local Japanese names. I scored some really good deals during seasonal sales, and the outlet also offers tax-free shopping for travelers. While the mall was crowded on the weekend, it never felt overwhelming thanks to its spacious design. If you want to take a breather, there are plenty of seating areas, playgrounds for kids, and even nursing rooms. When hunger hit around lunch, we chose from ramen, fried chicken, pasta, and more in the central food court, which was perfect for a refuel. They also offer free Wi-Fi, coin lockers, and even pet-friendly zones—so everything felt convenient, whether I wanted to work, shop, or walk the dog. If you’re visiting Fukuoka, Nagasaki, or Saga, this outlet is a solid stop—not just for shopping, but for the laid-back, resort-like experience.
Gator — Google review
Parking: Great parking area if you're driving. There were plenty of parking and the outdoor mall is connected by a bridge. Food: Not bad. Way better than the ones in the USA. Shopping: If you've been to the outlets in the USA, there's no comparison. There weren't many options and the prices are not cheap. Not cheap at all. This is supposed to be an outlet, not a regular shopping mall. I think if you're living in Asia, you'll probably like this place. However, if you're living in the USA, skip this place. It's going to be a waste of time for you.
Duncan C — Google review
If you’re looking for a big outlet with lots of branded shops, this is the one for you! It’s quite a bit of a travel, but definitely worth it. For me, it’s even better than Ships and Lalaport. The only downside (besides the distance) is the long line for food, so it’s best to bring something to eat or have a snack beforehand. Overall, a great place to shop and spend the day! 🛍️
Rafael M — Google review
The usual stores you will find at other Premium Outlets. It’s not as big as the one at Gotemba but still worth a visit. Show your passport and you will get a tax exception on your bill. I was told that next year (2026) you can only get your tax refund at the airport like in most countries. We spend a few hours here and found some nice bargains. I had some of the best burgers ever at the food court.
Marcel B — Google review
The place is nice as a venue, but the outlet prices often didn't differ much (if at all) from regular retail. Didn't buy anything except some Nike shoes – both Nike and Adidas likely will have the more compelling sale prices for shoes. Spent less than an hour here and ended up leaving since there wasn't much for us – definitely can't compare to outlet shopping in Europe. The free parking is a plus though.
Jonathan C — Google review
Good place to shop. Not too crowded and good selwction of brands. Tosu also offered very nice countryside scenery.
Jonathan M — Google review
An absolute shopping paradise. So many great brands at massive discounts—especially during the Golden Week promo! Most shops had 20% off for 3 items or more, and I could also claim a 10% tourist tax rebate. On top of that, many items were already marked down 40–60% off original prices, so the discounts stacked up really well. Scored quality stuff from Onitsuka Tiger, EDWIN, Calvin Klein, GAP, Tommy Hilfiger, and more. Great mix of style and value—definitely worth a trip!
Edwin — Google review
We came on 12 April 2025. As it was a Saturday, there were many people at the Outlets. You can download digital coupons at the entrance via the QR code.

Outdoor Activities
The Kanmon Strait, located between the Japanese islands of Honshu and Kyushu, serves as a vital route for both leisure boats and cargo ships. This strait holds historical significance as it was the stage for the Battle of Dannoura, which had a profound impact on Japan's history. Beneath the strait lies an underground tunnel that spans approximately 780 meters, allowing people to traverse between the two islands in about 15 minutes.
A strait that separates the main island of Japan from Kyushu. In the past, a battle that greatly affected the history of Japan was fought at the foot of this bridge. Directly under this strait is an underground tunnel through which people can pass. The total length is about 780 meters and it takes about 15 minutes if you walk normally. It is better to go out to the exits on both sides and enjoy the two views.
T M — Google review
The Kanmon Strait is very pleasant on a sunny day. It's a historic site where significant events took place, and arriving there felt very moving. If you're passing through by bicycle, there's a small fee of 20 yen.

It is a transit from South Korea to Japan and vice versa, named kannmon strait. The surrounding looks wow.If you passing in night then it looks more good. The colour of lights catch your eyes. Plenty hotels are there. It's a lifetime experience. If anyone get chance then don't missed out. Kannmon Bridge also looking very good from my ship.

(Translated by Google) The scenery is amazing! There are not only bridges but also tunnels that can be accessed on foot or by bicycle. Despite the scenery and hot history (the downfall of the Heike clan, Ganryu Island, the end of the Edo period), I get the impression that tourism resources are not being utilized effectively. There aren't many tourists (you can usually park in the free parking lot right away. Is Mojiko Retro only more famous?).

Akama-jingu Shrine

Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled along the scenic Kanmon Straits, Akama Jingu is a captivating Shinto shrine that pays homage to Emperor Antoku, a child emperor whose life was tragically cut short during the Battle of Dan-no-ura. The shrine's striking vermilion gate and elegant architecture create an inviting atmosphere for visitors.
This Shrine is another place to visit when go to Shimonoseki. It is a walkable distance from the Karato Fish Market. It is not the common design of most Japanese shrines. It has a unique look. Go up all the way to the back of the shrine to see a row of red torii gates. We were not able to go all the way up but it has a good view of the Kanmon area. It is also in this shrine where you can find a cute fugu mail box.
Travel T — Google review
Akama Jingu is a beautiful shrine is located on the stunning Kanmon Straits. The shrine is dedicated to the child emperor Antoku and other warriors who fell during the battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185. The location also provides many other historical locations to explore near by and offers beautiful water front views, and restaurants.
The C — Google review
Not many people seem to know the true charm of Akama at night. It may not shine as brightly as shrines in bigger cities, but here in Shimonoseki, there's a quiet, subtle beauty that lingers like a faint scent on the breeze. Under the dark sky, it glows with a deep red hue—soft, yet captivating. There’s no need for noise or lights. Just the sound of the sea breeze brushing past, and the stillness that gently wraps around you. As I strolled through the night, passing by this small yet majestic shrine, I found myself completely at peace— a rare moment to quietly walk, breathe, and simply think. I hope you, too, get to experience that kind of night.
기민주 — Google review
A red-white shrine located close to the sea. The architecture is quite unique. The red & white contrasting color makes a pale pink sakura flower more beautiful. The sea view from the shrine is also stunning.
Sarasate E — Google review
I visited the jingu at around 1pm, 8 May 2025. There were only a few visitors in the jingu, but there were some construction projects ongoing at that time. The complex is free to enter, and the buildings are brightly coloured in a traditional red hue. There is information about the history of the jingu, its relationship with Antoku Tenno and Hoichi the Earless.
Siu L — Google review
Came to this jinja after a short ferry ride from the Kyushu/Mojikou Port side to the Honshu/Yamaguchi side of the beautiful Kanmon Straits. It's about a 10-15 minute walk from the Karato ferry landing dock. Beautiful red and white structures and s pretty cute of the Kanmonkyo Bridge as you head back towards the street. No fee to enter our to look around, but a gift shop awaits to separate you and your funds. We went on a weekday during the late morning/early afternoon. A nice stop if you are in the area. Recommended!

Kanmon Bridge is a significant suspension bridge that links the westernmost part of Honshu, Japan, with the northernmost port of Kyushu. Completed in Showa 33, it has a total length of 780 meters and is exclusively for vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists can use the nearby submarine tunnel to cross.
Walking from "Mojiko Station (in Kyushu)" to "Shimonoseki Station (in Honshu)" was an amazing experience! I took many photos of the beautiful "Kanmon Bridge" from various places on both the "Kyushu" and "Honshu" sides. I even had the opportunity to walk through the unique underwater "Kanmon Tunnel", which made the entire experience unforgettable! *This walk is approximately 8 km long. Along the way, there are many spots to see, visit, and enjoy; it's a fascinating discovery walk. I recommend it!

suspension bridge that spans the Kanmon Strait, connecting the cities of Kitakyushu in Fukuoka Prefecture and Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi Prefecture. The bridge is a prominent landmark in the region and is widely regarded as one of the most impressive bridges in Japan. The bridge is approximately 1.2 kilometers long and stands at a height of 47 meters above the water. The view from the bridge is stunning, with the sparkling blue waters of the Kanmon Strait stretching out in all directions. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the island of Tsushima in the distance. One of the best ways to experience the Kanmon Bridge is by taking a leisurely drive across it. The road is smooth and well-maintained, and there are plenty of pull-off areas where you can stop and take in the view. There's also a pedestrian walkway on the bridge, which is a great option if you want to take your time and really soak in the scenery. Another popular way to experience the Kanmon Bridge is by taking a boat tour that passes underneath it. This is a great way to get a different perspective on the bridge and really appreciate its scale and grandeur. Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to the Kanmon Bridge if you're in the Fukuoka or Yamaguchi area. It's a beautiful and impressive structure that's definitely worth seeing in person

Onta Pottery Village

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Onta Pottery Village, located about 15 km north of Hita, is a charming vintage village that offers a glimpse into traditional pottery making. The village is deeply connected to its natural surroundings, using river water to grind clay and wood from local shops for kiln fuel. Visitors can witness skilled potters at work in their workshops and explore the handmade pottery studios and shops.
In a walking distance from the village. Small in size but informative. Not to be missed.
Tenny C — Google review
It’s a unique experience, a small village in the middle of the mountains, all houses basically dedicated to the craft, you see then drying the products outside and the shops are inside their homes. Such a local feel, the price range is reasonable with some going cheaper and some more pricey. They got a small free local museum, all the stuff inside is in Japanese though but nice enough to look at. The parking lot by the museum isn’t the biggest, it was quite empty when I got there around 9:30 am but completely full when I left around 11 am. Guess it depends on season and weather but it doesn’t seem like there are any other parking spots around so I suggest arriving earlier if you’re driving :))

We went on a rainy day so we only went to two shops, but the potteries are so nice, we bought some beautiful tea cups. The shops are unattended and you need to ring the bell if you want to buy. They are professional craftsmen busy working in the workshops, not professional customer service employees, so don't be a jerk going in.
M C — Google review
Am a potter hence wanted to visit this place to possibly make some ceramics or buy some unique pieces. However, there were probably only 4-5 shops that were opened, with many store owners being quite nonchalant and products were limited. Not as wide of a range as one would’ve expected. Interesting to still see how they pound the yellow clay using the force of the water. Love the cute (and only food store) soba and udon shop!

When art, tradition, and nature seamlessly fuse, the resulting uniqueness establishes an identity of its own. Originality can't be replicated nor transferred; it exclusively resides within the soul of the creator. This is what it is.

A village dedicated to pottery. Serene and tranquil, located in the middle of mountain and forest. Really nice walking in the village and admiring all the pottery items.
J S — Google review
Caught bus from bus station worth doing for scenery and the really interesting story of the pottery village and how it’s made. Needless to say we purchased some pottery which is very reasonably priced.
Stuart G — Google review
Beautiful, quiet and a great range of high quality traditional pottery. Items are mostly 1000yen and up (each). If you know what you are interested in and need a beautiful addition to your tableware, you will find it here. Spend just under 10000yen on 5 items.

Shinyaba Gorge is a picturesque river valley renowned for its stunning autumn foliage and breathtaking mountain vistas. Visitors can soak in hot springs and marvel at an observatory while enjoying the beautiful scenery. However, it tends to be quite crowded with tourists, so arriving early is recommended to avoid the crowds. The area boasts delicious local cuisine such as shishi nabe (boar soup) and shika kushi (deer on a stick), making it an excellent spot for foodies too.
Visited on 21/11/22. Whilst the best time to see has passed, there are still plenty of red leaves en-route and near the big parking lot. The viewing platform itself is quite small but you could walk around the area by foot (we spent around an hour taking photos etc). The mountains are magnificent whether with or without red leaves! Driving through the area is such an enjoying experience.
Dbajune — Google review
I visited on the 8/11/24 and not much autumn foliage to be seen. Apparently the autumn foliage in Japan was delayed in 2024 by roughly a month. That being said I would suggest visiting from at least the 3rd week of November to see the autumn foliage. Other than the autumn foliage it's still a lovely place with tourist shops and a nice walk or two near the river.
Michael — Google review
Visited on November 11, 2023. Not sure if the autumn colors had not arrived or were gone, there was not much autumn to see though the small shops alongside the road are quite lovely.

I think it’s beautiful place in Autumn 🍂. I went there on spring on that time it’s only pretty geen. If you plan to travel there it’s better on September or October.

Beautiful, especially middle of november. Quite a lot of tourists, try to arrive early. We ate boar soup (shishi nabe) and deer on a stick (shika kushi). Lovely photo spot. Get in and out before 11.30am if you can.

Akiyoshido Cave

Scenic spot

Akiyoshido Cave, nestled in Mine City, is a breathtaking natural wonder that captivates visitors with its illuminated chambers adorned with stunning limestone stalactites and stalagmites. As the largest karst cave in Japan, it boasts impressive 80-meter-high ceilings and stretches an astonishing 10 kilometers underground.
Akiyoshido Cave is located in the country of Japan and its very peaceful. There wasn’t too many tourists, which made the trip relaxing and enjoyable. The cave is the largest limestone cove in Japan. As I explored the cave, I saw stalactites everywhere and if the water drops on your head, supposedly it’s a sign of a good luck. You should probably wear a jacket since the cave does get a little chilly. If you have young kids, this might not be a place to go unless you intend on carrying them by hand. It’s not really stroller friendly but they do have elevators. After walking through the cave, I went to the observation deck to see the 300 million years old limestone plateau. This was my favorite part!! Go in the spring-fall time frame to see the luscious scenery of greens. This was probably one of the neatest thing I’ve seen in my life.

An unforgettable experience! Akiyoshidō Cave is huge, beautifully lit, and easy to walk through — perfect for all ages. The atmosphere is peaceful and cool (about 17°C year-round), making it a great place to visit even in the summer. The cave is full of amazing natural features like underground waterfalls, crystal-clear pools, and unique rock formations. The “100 Plates” (Hyakumai-zara) were especially stunning. It’s not too dark or claustrophobic, and the walking path is very well maintained with handrails and lights. You can walk the whole main route in about an hour, and there’s even an elevator that takes you up to the Akiyoshidai Plateau above if you want to explore more. The entrance fee is reasonable (around ¥1,200), and definitely worth it. It’s not super touristy, which makes it feel even more special. Just wear comfortable shoes — some spots are a little slippery. Highly recommended if you’re in Yamaguchi Prefecture!
Nevaeh T — Google review
I first visited the Akiyoshidai Observatory and then parked at the nearby elevator parking lot to explore Akiyoshi Cave. The day was a bit humid, but inside the cave it was cool and refreshing, and I had a great time. I had seen many photos of the impressive cave entrance before, but the inside was just as mysterious and stunning. It may go without saying, but since there are no restrooms inside the cave, it’s probably better not to drink too much water before entering. From the observatory to the cave, the whole experience was wonderful — truly something Yamaguchi can be proud of.

An amazing experience for everyone that love exploring the beauty of what lies beneath. The cave lightening and ambiance are done perfectly to enhance your experience while exploring this marvel of nature. The newly finished mural is a wonderful in itself. A must visit.
Sharaz H — Google review
I highly recommend against visiting this cave, the entire area is just a tourist trap and when you get into the cave, not only the ticket price is expensive, you need to pay more if you want to go into a special "adventure" path, the cave is bland at best and I wouldn't even put it in the top 10 caves I visited. My verdict: really not worth it
Richard S — Google review
It’s a must visit limestone cave when you are in Mini City in Yamaguchi, especially during summer. The beautiful and clean cave temperature is about 17 degree. The walkway is all nicely and carefully paved with safety and comfort in consideration. Entrance fee is JPY1300 per person for 1 hour walk. Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes. There are 2 types of walks, the up course and down course walk. We took the down course walk and completed in about 45 mins. Up course requires a fee of JPY300. We love the walk. The cave is dimly lit to give a feel of darkness in the cave but not too dim so you can see the steps and surroundings. We enjoyed the walk very much and wouldn’t mind coming again if we happen to be Yamaguchi.
SY — Google review
I went there on a rainy day. Took the bus from shin-yamaguchi to the cave, it was really easy to get there! The Cave was really really beautiful the guide in english really interesting and you can re-enter the cave if you take the elevator to the observation deck and want to go back in. Just show the ticket again. I think it war okay didnt need a jacket had t-shirt and a long sleeve shirt on (took the long sleeve off later) the cave had a temperature of 17 °C. For me it was worth it!

Akiyoshidai is a stunning karst landscape in Japan, featuring rocky outcrops, a cave system, and an underground river. Visitors can take a scenic drive through this ancient seabed area or opt for a guided tour to explore the caves and wildlife safari. The area is also known for its annual summer grass burning event, where thousands of people carry torches and ignite the grass with fireworks.
One of the “Must-Go” place if you’re in Shimonoseki. Japan’s largest karst plateau, known for its dramatic limestone landscape and vast underground caves. Perfect spot for a scenic drive 🚘🏍️ There’s a cafe☕️ and an information center
(right next to the observatory), so you can enjoy the view safe from hot sun. ☀️💦 👀 by the way, -It’s okay to sit in side the Cafe/Information Center (without buying anything) -Mikan Soft Icecream is so GOOOOD 🍊🍦 -Akiyoshidai -> Beppu Benten Pond (Under 20min driving distance)

been here today. the view is another level of gorgeousness yet the facilities are insufficient. neither food store nor staffs are available along the karst road so no one we can ask in case we meet trouble during our trip, especially if we are cycling. and the cave staff said that bringing food are not allowed. even at the camping ground you will not meet any foodstore or restaurant or cafe whatsoever. even if you stay at the camping ground food are not sold except you have reserved the previous day. i think this place has huge potential but unfortunately they have poor management.

Hagi Castle Town is a beautifully preserved heritage district in Japan, known for its Meiji-era houses that were once home to merchants. The area offers a glimpse into the past with former samurai residences and merchant houses lining the quiet streets. Established as a castle town in 1604, Hagi flourished under Mori Terumoto's rule and remains one of Japan's most historic cities.
Historical houses are giving this little town an idyllic ambience which invites you to stroll around and explore this place. Lots of pottery in nice historic buildings add even more charm.

Shokasonjuku Academy in the quiet town of Hagi is a historical school that played a significant role in the modernization of Japan. It was founded by Yoshida Shoin, a teacher and traveler whose students included influential figures of Meiji-era Japan. Visiting this site allows you to explore the homes and classrooms of key individuals like Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first Prime Minister.
Yoshida Shoin led a wonderfully romantic life as a.teacher and traveler, and his students included some of modern Japan's Meiji creators, men who weren't afraid to take action during life and death times. In this sleepy little town of Hagi you can visit the homes and classrooms of all involved, including the house of Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first Prime Minister.

The Ruriko-ji Five Story Pagoda is a serene and picturesque Buddhist temple located in a landscaped park. This popular spot offers breathtaking views of cherry blossoms and fall foliage. Visitors can explore the pagoda and temple, both of which are free to enter. There is also a peaceful koi fish and turtle pond on the premises. However, visitors must take care to be respectful as there is also a cemetery onsite.
No matter how many times I visit, this pagoda takes my breath away! It’s so pretty throughout the year. There are plum blossom trees, cherry blossom trees, and hydrangea on the grounds for people to enjoy. It’s also nice place to enjoy fall foliage. There are usually some volunteer guides on the grounds also. They are so nice and helpful. Lots of parking available, but they do get very busy during certain times of the year if you go on the weekend. If you’re hungry while you are here, there is a cafe that serves the roof tile noodles nearby. It’s next to the large gift shop that is located next to the parking lot. The grounds are wheelchair and stroller friendly. There is no fee to enter and view the pagoda.

Stephen B — Google review
Go up around the Back! This is a beautiful pagoda that creates in its viewers a little bit of a Zen (or if you prefer, God's glory) experience. Why is this? Why do visitors say that it takes their breath away. My interpretation is that it looks like a lot of houses or temples stacked one on top of another. We are used to seeing the temple roof shape of each story of the pagoda. In the grounds of the temple there are similar roofs, of other similar temple structures but these are arranged horizontally with at most a slight vertical misalignment due to the temple structures and their roofs being built on a slope, which with the admixture of perspective, allows us to see when we view a temple complex or townscape a cascade of roofs stretching off into the distance. And so it is when we view this pagoda our brains attempt to interpret its form in the same familiar way, as smaller and smaller, more distant roofs, on the side of the mountain, but then, whammy, it is not perspective, it is not a slope, these roofs are stacked. And in that whattheblazes moment of reappraisal, our analytical mind is stumped, stopped and dumbfounded, and we are given a glimpse of that which a Zen scholar calls "the purity of experience" or perhaps, in Christian parlance, we see the light. In any event it is a very beautiful pagoda. It contains a library of books that no one reads. And those in the know can go up around the back to stand at eye level with the middle of the pagoda and look down upon the temple sharing the same grounds. Please see the photo. 案内すると感心してもらえますよ。

Hofu Tenmangu Shrine is a historic site, established in 904 and dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of academics. It is renowned for its seasonal plum blossoms and traditional festivals. Many visitors come to pray for success in academics and passing entrance exams. The shrine offers a beautiful view of Hofu City and has parking lots nearby.
Those who love historical momentum and look for peace in mind; should try this auspicious place. I recommend the late afternoon to dusk is the best time for visiting. We can enjoy sunset from top and can have a birds eye view of the city at valley. Last but not the least, the ray of the setting sun creates a dramatic climax, which offers an ample opportunity for cinematic photography...

Nestled in Shunan City, the KAITEN Memorial Museum offers a poignant glimpse into Japan's wartime history through the lens of the Kaiten, a manned torpedo developed during World War II. The museum honors those who trained for this daring mission, including Hiroshi Kuroki and Sekio Nishina, whose sacrifices are commemorated here. Visitors can explore personal artifacts collected from across the nation that tell stories of bravery and ambition amidst conflict.
A must see museum of Kaiten, the suicide torpedo, developed by the Japanese Navy during the WW2. The museum itself is pretty small but you will get to see in tears the photos and letters of those who took on the no return mission and died hoping to defend their families.

Really interesting museum about the Top Secret strategy Japan deployed during WW2, the Kaiten. We were fortunate that the museum curator gave us a usb drive for phone that told the history and story of the Kaiten of Ozushima. Such a sobering place and the honour felt by these young men who died to play their part in war.
Frances — Google review
I Wept The kaiten were manned submarines that were used towards the end of the Second World War in order to turn Japanese millitary fortune, and the heavens upside down - hence the name: kai-ten turn heaven. One of the young men who died in training was 23 year old Hiroshi Kuroki, who suggested the name “Kaiten”. His ashes were carried by his friend and Kaiten co-inventor, 21 year old Sekio Nishina when he sank USS Mississinewa on 20th November 1944, killing himself and 50 US sailors on board.

(Translated by Google) From the dock, turn right and follow the signs; it takes about 10 minutes to walk there. Along the way, there were gentle slopes and dangling tree branches, so we walked slowly along the path. Inside the museum, there is a 25-minute video showing the voices of the kaiten pilots, photographs, and wills. I saw the cockpit inside the kaiten. I'd heard it required six hands and six eyes, and it was an incredibly complex device built in such a small space. I hope for peace. Forever. I rang the Peace Bell outside. It takes about an hour to see everything. I recommend about two hours to see everything on Otsushima. It's quite challenging to reach the monument tower at the top of the mountain if you're not in good physical condition, so it's best not to go unless you have time for a boat. Taikodani Inari-jinja Shrine is a significant Inari shrine in Japan, known for its picturesque views and iconic red torii gates. It is one of the five great Inari shrines dedicated to the harvest god, Tsuwano Oinarisan. The shrine was built in 1773 after the deity's spirit was invited from Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto.
This location is undoubtedly a standout, ranking among the most memorable spots encountered in Japan. While no monks were sighted during the visit, the shrine remains an active place of worship, suggesting their presence. The site is particularly striking due to its impressive column of Tori gates, culminating in the largest one the reviewer has ever seen, which guards the entrance to both the shrine and the town. Admission and parking are complimentary, with souvenirs available for purchase to support the shrine's upkeep. This is undeniably a destination worth exploring.

Wonderful shintoist temple with a path going up from the town similar to the Kyoto Inari temple. From there, you can also climb to the castle ruins in about 30 minutes or go up with the chair lift, where you will have an amazing view of the tsuwano city and its valley!

Definitely worth the trip up the mountains for this. One of the most sacred and beautiful shrines in Japan, and definitely worth a visit if you want to avoid the overcrowded touristy places!

I absolutely loved this place. Amongst one of my most memorable places in Japan. I didn’t see any monks during my visit, but it was a working Shrine and I have no doubt they’re there. There is a column of Tori gates as well, plus the biggest Tori gate I’ve ever seen guarding the entrance to the town and Shrine. Admission and parking is free, but souvenir’s are offered for sale to support the Shrine. Definitely worth a visit!

A small Japanese Shrine located at mid-levels. Not many tourists and it is easy to find. Beautiful old Japanese architecture. There is a great view outside the Shrine. The drive along and the stay there will be refreshing.
Benny C — Google review
(visits 1) Parking was free. No English here. This place is not really meant for foreign tourists. It's a shrine more than tourist attraction. I was here for the nearby castle and this is where the parking was. I of course went to check out the shrine. It was beautiful. The view was beautiful. But I felt rather out of place as I realized this very much more a shrine shrine rather than a tourist shrine. I quickly left to go find the castle.
R D — Google review
The shrine is the highlight of Tsuwano town especially if you know where to find the rear entrance. Taikodani Inari-jinja shrine has a big impact on the town of Tsuwano. One of the roads down into the town has an impressive big red gate as if the hole town is part of the shrine precinct. You can see the shrine from most place in the town overlooking the valley. It was built to protect the castle that no longer stands. The shrine has resulted in the popularity of deep fried tofu skin noodles and the same stuffed with rice, which are likewise named after the fox, inari, that is said to like to eat them. There is a car park directly in front of the shrine allowing visitors to go to pray or purchase omamori talismen after having only climbed a short stair case, but above all, I recommend the rear entrance so that you can go through the "1000" scarlet gates, climbing 263 steps. I think that the red gates symbolise something very important. By going through 1000 of them one may perhaps attain a little more purity at the shrine at the top. The rear entrance, with all the red gates, an be accessed along the river bank near to Yasaka Jinja Shrine which is also marked on Google Maps. Unfortunately there is no car park so the designated driver will have to use the main entrance, or walk, or take a taxi from the station to Yasaka Jinja. Taikodani Inari-jinja shrine itself is very well pretty, if a little gaudy, and the views down onto the town are very pleasant. The shrine sells Hello Kitty, and fox depicting omamori amulets as well as more traditional omamori (good luck charm) variations. The fox is the messenger of the Esoteric Buddhism related god herein enshrined but offerings are often made to the fox. One can purchase the deep friend tofu skin to make as an offering at the shrine for that reason. The fox is associated with esoteric Buddhism and with sex. The fox is sometimes depicted as having a phallic tail. The shrine, and the town of Tsuwano, is 1 hour by car or steam locomotive (March to November) and two and a half hours by road bicycle along route nine from Yamaguchi, through the scenic valley of Choumonkyo and the apple production region of Tokusa. There is, incidentally another famous, and attractive multi-red gated shrine, Moto no Sumi Inari shrine on the coast in the adjacent Yamaguchi prefecture, near the corner of Honshu, and hence perhaps the name of the shrine which means "the base of the corner fox shrine" which is I think a very appropriate name and location for one of these red-gated fox shrines.

I made a mistake when it came to lunch, I had pointed out the breakfast special, the lady talked the cook into preparing it for me even though breakfast was over. Here I was thinking that it was ramen for me, but it was more to my appetite. Coffee, salad , fried egg, toast, miso soup. Best meal for wet hungry cyclist , good food friendly service and had it been a sunny day , what a view.

Shimane Aquarium - Aquas is a captivating destination for marine life enthusiasts, showcasing over 400 species, including majestic beluga whales and various sharks. Visitors can delight in penguin feeding sessions and explore an impressive undersea tunnel that offers a unique perspective of aquatic life. The expansive grounds provide ample parking, making it easy to access the aquarium. Families will appreciate the interactive zones designed for children, ensuring an engaging experience for all ages.
This Aquarium is full of surprises. First there is plenty of parking. Then the admission is not that expensive comparing to what things we can experience in there. The Aquarium staff are very nice and welcoming. And of course it’s very clean. I am not a zoo/aquarium person but I still love to go around this place.

We visited this aquarium during our visit to Hamada. It was very impressive to see all the animals that this aquarium has to offer. They have activities for kids and adults alike. We spent all day here and the views from the rooftop were amazing. Staff was very friendly and helpful even with the language barrier. If we are back in the area we will visit again, definitely a must see.

Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine

Sights & Landmarks
The Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, which dates back to 1526, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its minimal environmental impact. Visitors can explore the remnants of this historic mine and see first-hand how it impacted Japan's economy through trade with Europe. The well-preserved roads, tunnels, samurai houses, and artifacts offer a glimpse into the past and allow visitors to appreciate the hard work undertaken by laborers to extract silver in challenging conditions.
We visited this place on 8 october 2023. The day was little bit rainy but didn't interrupt our visit to this UNESCO World heritage site. We started our journey from Yamaguchi city. The way to Shimane was also nice and enjoyable. It was a guided tour. First, we visited the art museum. It is recommended to visit before you go to the site. You can know the history thoroughly. Then it will be easy to you to visualize the 500 years old silver mine civilization. The place is quite thrilling full with history. You can see 500 years ago Barbara shop, the house of Samurai, old house and court building. Here, everything was kept as you can imagine yourself and go back 500 years ago. Although we can not visit the actual mine area the trip was worthy as well. Strongly recommended.
Hassan R — Google review
Interesting to go into the old silver mine. Recommend wearing the hard hat provided unless you are very short as the ceiling is low in many places and we bumped our heads a few times. There were some pictures of what the mining working conditions were like for the workers. Would have been a hard life.
Warren R — Google review
This is a UNESCO World Heritage silver mine. Walking around Iwami Ginzan, I felt the harsh conditions under which people worked to earn money in those days. A guide accompanied us, providing detailed and easy-to-understand explanations, making the experience both enjoyable and informative.

The Iwami Ginzan historic site is impressive for its preserved old structures and landscape. It's clear that a considerable budget has been invested in maintaining the authenticity of this heritage site.
T. G — Google review
This was a fun experience. If you come here expecting to go deep under ground in a deep, vast tunnel you will be let down. The tunnel is nice to walk through but it's not the most thrilling thing in the world so its best to keep your expectations low. What really made this experience special was hiring a bicycle and riding through the beautiful traditional buildings in the town which leads up to the mine.
Martyn Q — Google review
Iwami Ginza Mines is a great experience. Very peaceful and relaxing. There is only two ways to reach the mine walk or hire a bicycle some of which are electric. Its a 2.5 km easy walk with things to see along the way (temples, shrines and beautiful scenery and toilets). The mine cost is 500 yen and foreigners get a discount. A must see.
Nathan C — Google review
I really enjoy when visiting Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. This place, become UNESCO heritage site because here you will find the trace of the glory silver mine 400 years ago. Roads, tunnels, Samurai's house, and artifacts as remnants of silver mine still exists until now. This place is conserved well until now. Had trade with Europe, prove this silver mine activity affected Japan's economy at that time. Tour into the tunnel will give you the idea how the labors work to get the silver. It really hard to work under having water problems, and the shortage of light and fresh air in the past. Please visit Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, you will not regret!!

This is a great place to take a walk and it is a important place during Japanese history. It provide funds during 15~16 century. The Major issue is lack of English resource. It is hard for Foreign visitors to understand the picture by using audio guide. As a UNESCO site, I think it is reasonable to training small number of English guide.

The Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center is a museum that showcases the history and artifacts of a centuries-old silver mine. The center features models and archaeological finds from the site, providing visitors with an in-depth understanding of the area's rich history. For first-time visitors arriving by car, this center offers a safe and convenient parking option.
Was very well set up, very friendly staff and awesome exhibits showing everything from trade routes to 3d maps of the mines themselves. Lots to see here and well worth the entry fee
Only I — Google review
For a first time visitor by car, this is the safer and easier place to park your car. You will have to take a public bus from this center to the gateway to the Iwami-Ginzan area, which is basically one narrow street stretching from lower part of the creek to the upper part of the creek. The bus ride would cost yen 240 (US$2 or less), while the car park was free and abundant at this center. It turned out that getting a rental bicycle (electric powered one at yen 700 for two hours) at a former gas station near the lower bus stop would be ideal lakes you enjoy uphill walk without shades for 2 km or so.

This museum is not a typical tourist attraction or scenic landmark, but a serious place dedicated to learning about the history of the region. Its exhibits are carefully curated to provide educational value rather than entertainment, making it ideal for visitors with a genuine interest in the area's historical development. A worthwhile stop for those seeking depth and context in their travels.

If you want to park for free and take the bus to the village it’s a good way to get there. But walking alone is probably out of the option considering the ‘caution bears’ sign
Bryan V — Google review
Great center that introduces to the whole history of the mining region in quite an interactive way! Almost all the information is accompanied with English translation which is very nice. It is only 20 min walk from the center of the charming Omori village. So, if anyone is interested, I had a perfect day taking a 10:15am bus from Hiroshima directly to this center, learned about mining, walked to Omori and browsed it around a bit (it is gorgeous!), and from there took a 15 min ride (google maps knows it all) on a very cute small electric bus to the Ryugenji mine shaft (open to public without guides). And finally hiked from there for three hours through majestic forest to one of the most authentic hot springs in the country in Yunotsu. Memorable day full of history, nature, hiking, and relaxation!

Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse, Japan's tallest lighthouse at 43 meters, stands as the centerpiece of Cape Hino. Visitors can pay a small admission fee to climb the tower and enjoy panoramic views of the remote Oki Islands on clear days. The surrounding area offers attractions like Hinomisaki Shrine and Inasa-no-hama beach, making it a perfect spot for sightseeing.
The drive to the lighthouse winds along the Hinomisaki coastline, with multiple areas to stop along the way to admire the dramatic rocky landscape. The parking lot at the end is free, and there is a large toilet building there too. From the lighthouse, there is a walking trail that takes you along the coastline in a loop back to the parking lot, or even further to the shrine. As it started raining today, I decided to only do the smaller loop, but it was still enioyable.

After visiting Izumo Taisha, we took a little side-trip up the coast and quite enjoyed our visit to this lighthouse. You get a good workout going up the stairs and are then rewarded with a beautiful view from the top. You also can learn a little about its history and design, as well as those of other lighthouses around Japan.

An awesome place to visit! The views from the top are incredible! And exploring the surrounding coast is just as cool. The formations of the cliffs are so intriguing. It cost us 300yen to go up the lighthouse, it was well worth it!
Zbusurprise — Google review
The majestic and magnificent lighthouse offers an excellent view after climbing up, but the prerequisite is that you must have great courage and physical strength. During the climb, you can browse information about Japan's 100 Selected Lighthouses. There is also a display hut next to the lighthouse that explains the history and operation procedures of the lighthouse. A visit here is definitely worthwhile.

Very beautiful view! It is advisable to go in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. Not many people come here during weekday, so it was nice to to have the whole place for yourself. There is a trekking path nearby if you want to enjoy the view of the sea. The lighthouse has 6-7 floors, the last stair was really scary to climb. But it is worth climbing to the top. Beautiful view with breezing wind. There are some restaurants and cafes nearby too.

Izumo Taisha is a renowned shrine complex in Shimane Prefecture, Japan, attracting millions of visitors annually. It holds cultural significance and features various artworks and festivals. The town of Izumo is nestled amidst picturesque mountains and the sea, offering a serene setting for travelers. The shrine is the second most important Shinto shrine in Japan and serves as a major pilgrimage stop.
A very spiritual place, older than written history in Japan itself, hidden far away from big centres like Tokyo or Kyoto. We had the fortune to visit during the tail end of the Dai-sairei Matsuri, with traditional dances and ceremonies to relate the myths connected to the shrine. I definitely recommend you spend half a day here, slowly taking in all the nuances of Izumo Taisha, finding all its hidden spots of beauty and symbolism.
Emiel H — Google review
One of Japan's most ancient and revered shrines. The grounds are quite spacious and contains quite a large number of buildings/structures. If you like Shinto architecture, you will no doubt enjoy the beautifully curved lines of the cedar rooves. Although many shrines display large and beautiful ropes, those at one of the buildings in the compound are definitely the largest I have ever seen. The atmosphere is very serene, and it is well worth a side-trip if you are in Shimane.
Rory R — Google review
The Izumooyashiro is amazing. The place is clean, quiet and beautiful. The handmade gigantic rope hanging over the jinsha is a wonderful sight, you will simple be amazed by the work of Japanese people. And it is quite easy to go there by local train, the minus point will only be, as the local train only runs 1 or at most 2 per hour, you better check the local train timetable carefully (especially if you travelled with JR like me), and reserved enough time as you need to buy separate train tickets to visit the oyashiro.
NIGHT L — Google review
One of Japan’s most impressive shrines — said to be the second largest in the country. The scale is grand and awe-inspiring, yet the grounds feel calm and spacious. Fewer tourists than Kyoto’s big-name sites make for a more peaceful experience. A must-visit if you're in the Izumo region.
Alan S — Google review
Come and visit. No need to describe what you can feel in the place. Before you can read about the rules of the temple and treat everyone with respect.
Eduardo M — Google review
Legend has it that eight million gods hold an annual meeting here. There are four torii gates. The largest torii made of white stone is located at the end of the road in front of Izumo Taisha Shrine, the black wooden torii is located at the front of the road, the iron torii is inside Izumo Taisha Shrine, and the copper torii is closest to the shrine. It takes at least 10 minutes to walk to the shrine from the outside road. Dedicated to Okuninushi, Izumo Taisha Shrine covers a huge area and is very comfortable to walk in. It is definitely a shrine that cannot be missed among Japanese shrines. What is special is that the way of worship here is different from other shrines in Japan. The way of worship here is two bows, four claps, and one bow.
Evans H — Google review
I was finally able to visit Izumo Taisha Shrine, which I had longed to do. You will probably be more impressed if you read a book on Japanese mythology and gain some background knowledge, since this is a god who appears in the Kojiki 古事記 and Nihon Shoki 日本書紀.

Izumo Taisha is a magical destination for anyone seeking love or connection. Dedicated to Okuninushi, the deity of marriage, this ancient Shinto shrine in Shimane exudes a serene, spiritual vibe. The towering main hall and massive shimenawa rope are awe-inspiring, while the enmusubi (matchmaking) prayers create a hopeful atmosphere. I offered a prayer for meaningful relationships and bought an enmusubi charm as a keepsake. The grounds buzz with stories of couples finding love here. Despite some crowds, the experience was uplifting, leaving me inspired by the shrine’s romantic legacy. A must-visit for love-seekers!

The Shimane Prefecture Ancient Izumo History Museum is a modern space that houses a collection of excavated bronze artifacts and remains from the 1200s Izumo Grand Shrine. It is located near the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine and showcases major historical finds from the region, including exhibits on Izumo Taisha, Lafcadio Hearn, and 358 bronze swords excavated at nearby Kojindani.
So glad I made time to stop here. In fact, upon entering, I delayed my return to Matsue city to spend my time more leisurely at this museum! As others have said, there is wonderful English support via an audio device (they should offer it to you, if you don't understand Japanese and didn't get one, don't hesitate to ask!). The English version was missing for a few exhibits but not majorly so. I particularly enjoyed the Myths area and the recovered bronze swords + replica room. Most of the exhibits featured English titles but beyond the audio support, the written information is all Japanese! I spent about 1 hr and half enjoying the museum at a slow pace (not including a cafe visit, sadly). Also, you can get a foreign visitor discount!

Tranquil and well organized museum. Very friendly staff, ready to help out in English. English audio option is a bit limited, especially in the stories of myth section (which I have the most interest in). Cafe Maru at L2 offers generous portion of delicious food (I was tempted to try their dessert, but was too full!). The cafe has great view, making the meal more enjoyable. The area surrounding is beautiful, great for taking a stroll. If you want to enjoy the view but tired of walking, go to L3, there are two benches facing the outdoor. If you exit from the west gate, there is a shortcut to Izumo Taisha, covered with well trimmed bonsai and flowers (save the trouble of walking up hill)

You can see the evidence of ancient huge shrines pillars here. It can be possible to build huge shrine with only woods. And excellent view from the cafe is also recommend.

Although Shimane prefecture has a sensitive political dispute with Korea, the exhibits were pretty much objective and the staff were nice, which made me feel pacifist vibes are mainstream in the civilian sector. A cool 358 piece bronze dagger that was found at once was displayed in the exhibit room, and that also indicates Korea and Japan were linked tightly and friendly back in the ancient days (the style of dagger is only found in Korean peninsula and Japan). Many cool archaeological stuff are there.

Ichibata Yakushi is a historic temple located on Mt. Ichibata, with a history dating back to 894 AD. The temple, dedicated to the Yakushi faith of healing, offers stunning views of the Chugoku region from its elevation of 200m. Visitors can climb over 1,300 stairs to reach the main hall and explore Hachiman Yonsen Do with its 48,000 statues and a street adorned with 108 lanterns.
There are legends associated with this temple. Perhaps this populism is more popular than Buddhism or Zen. Figures of an old woman and a little boy can be seen in various places on the premises. Shigeru Mizuki (boy) is a well-known designer who portrays creation and humor. Also, the main character in his animation is the one-eyed little man statue and many such statues can be seen in this temple. The Japanese believe that creation or animation is an intermediate state between "soul" and "ghost". The founder of Shigeru Mizuki, the old lady is said to have told him many historical and mythical stories.

This temple truly feels like a beloved place for the local community rather than a tourist destination. Few visitors come just for the sightseeing, which adds to its serene, authentic atmosphere. The approach to the temple is lined with a majestic, almost intimidating presence that sets a sacred tone even before you arrive. Dedicated to a deity of sight, it holds a special place in the hearts of those seeking blessings for their sight. A quiet and powerful spiritual place.

The autumn color is beautiful. Parking space is plenty but costs 500 Yen. Please also note that no tripod or monopod is allowed inside and the distance between parking area and the entrance is 15 plus minutes walk uphill.

The Oni-no-Shitaburui Gorge in Japan is a picturesque destination with a suspension bridge and promenade for viewing the stunning deep river valley filled with boulders. It's an ideal place to relax and enjoy the breathtaking autumn scenery, including colorful leaves and massive river rocks. The trail is easy to navigate, with boardwalks and stairs providing access to information about local history and rock formations. Recommended as a fantastic spot that's both stunning and well-equipped for visitors.
I went in autumn, and the views were really beautiful. The leaves were colorful and the massive river boulders were impressive. While walking, you could read information about certain rock formations and local history. There were boardwalks and stairs, so the trail was very easy.

Oni no Shitaburui gorge is the second gorge I have ever been to in Japan. I was really impressed with the scenery, the bridge, the river, also the rocks there. This is the perfect place if you want to relax and see the breathtaking scenery between gorge and autumn in Japan. Really recommended enjoying tea time there <3

(Translated by Google) This is a hiking trail that takes you across a suspension bridge with a spectacular view and allows you to view the gorge and numerous oddly shaped rocks. There was a relatively large free parking lot at the entrance to the gorge. It was my first time visiting, and the gorge was amazing. There are several trails, but if you use the barrier-free walking path you can stroll comfortably without any large steps or stairs. Next time I'd like to take my time and explore the gorge course as well. Immediately after the shop we came to the Koi Tsuribashi suspension bridge. The view from the bridge is amazing. Afterwards we strolled through the valley, and there is a barrier-free promenade so it is very easy to walk on. We were able to see various strangely shaped and huge rocks, and enjoyed the beauty of the formations created by mother nature.
