Bingling Temple

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Nearly 200 caves along the Yellow River filled with Buddha statues dating back to the 1st century.
An amazing ancient site to visit. My first question was: Why was such a temple built in a mountanous area of nowhere? It was along the ancient Silk Road! There were once 4000 Buddhist monks on this site, with only one Tibetan monk left now. The facilities here were well maintained.
Swee P — Google review
Bingling Temple, located in Yongjing County, Gansu Province, is a renowned Buddhist grotto complex carved into the cliffs along the Yellow River. The name "Bingling" means "thousand Buddhas" in Tibetan, reflecting its spiritual significance and the rich array of Buddhist art found here. The site dates back to the Western Qin period (circa 420 AD) and has evolved over centuries under various dynasties, including the Tang and Song. The grottoes are set in a dramatic canyon landscape, accessible by boat through the Liujiaxia Reservoir, adding to the sense of adventure and serenity. The temple complex contains over 180 caves, hundreds of stone carvings, and clay sculptures, as well as colorful murals depicting scenes from Buddhist teachings and local history. Among the most impressive features is the giant 27-meter-tall seated Maitreya Buddha, which dominates the cliff face and showcases the intricate artistry of ancient Chinese Buddhist sculpture. Despite weathering and natural erosion, the site retains remarkable details and artistic beauty. Bingling Temple is not only a sacred place for Buddhists but also a cultural treasure that highlights the historical exchange between Han Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism. It's a peaceful and awe-inspiring destination for history, art, and nature lovers.

You need to travel from Lanzhou to Liujiaxia (刘家峡), either by bus from Lanzhou West Bus Station (兰州西站) or by car, and then take a boat from the Liujiaxia Dam (刘家峡大坝, Liújiāxiá Dàbà) across the Liujiaxia Reservoir to the caves. The bus leaves Lanzhou at 9am and the ticket office opens at 7:30am. There is a second bus that leaves at 11:40am. For the return journey the driver said the buses leave on the opposite side of the road from drop off at 14:00, 15:30 and 17:30, but we actually managed to get a carshare all the way back to Lanzhou.
Laura M — Google review
This place is just wow. When you take the boat first you don’t know what to expect. Then you see the cliff around you and the magic start. But the highlight is really the Giant Buddha. When I saw it the first time it was a real shock in my chest. This place is so powerful.
Olivier M — Google review
This place is hard to get to but worth the effort! It is so remote the only way to get there is by boat but the beautiful cliffs, Yellow river, and Buddhas (carved right into the cliffs!) make me want to go again and again. There are hundreds of stone statues throughout the 100+ caves. There is a bit of walking so be sure to wear comfortable shoes but there weren't as many stairs as I had expected so that was a plus.
Traveler N — Google review
Great display of culture migration and appreciation in older times. Peer in to the small inlets and not only the big sitting Buddha. Accessible by boat via the Yellow River. Wonderful views from the sail itself. Nearest big city is Lanzhou.
Tamar A — Google review
A magnificent, mystic environment, and spiritual envitonment. The number and craftsmanship of grotto carvings and painting are impressive. The cave temple had some of the most memorable wooden sculptures and painted shrines I've seen in China

Dafo Temple in Zhangye is a remarkable historical site that dates back to the 12th century, with roots tracing even further to 1098 during the Western Xia dynasty. This ancient temple is renowned for its impressive 35-meter-long reclining Buddha, which stands as one of the largest wooden Buddhas in Asia. Surrounded by weathered clay arhats and adorned with Qing dynasty murals, the temple exudes a sense of tranquility and history.
We passed through the so called Dafosi Square thereafter some shops , arriving at Dafo Temple. In Chinese Dafo Temple means Big Buddha Temple . This temple has a Gigantic Reclining Buddha. Guide told us its thirty-five metres long, unfortunately its all covered with scalfolding as the restoration work in progress. From the side ,although not visible, one could still see that this statue is made of clay on a wooden frame. It does depicts the Gautama Buddha’s attainment of nirvana, with his ten disciples standing behind him. This hall has a wooden structure are murals of Journey to the West ,Mountain & Sea Classics. Our Guide told us many tales on the 18 Arhats seated along the walkway, a lot of stories to remember !!! Next is the Sutras Exhibition Hall has all literatures and documentation on Buddhism as well as the collections of all the Buddhas statues. The Earthen Tower stands tall in the near distance, however we didn’t have much time to explore further. But we managed to browse through the Tourist Service Centre . All in all, it is a good place for people to see something about the history, culture, art, architecture and religion !!.

Arriving at Zhangye after a 4hr drive from Jinta due to an accident along the highway. We visit this beautiful temple after lunch. This temple is best known for housing the largest indoor reclining Buddha statue in China. It is made of clay over a wooden frame. Accompanying the giant statue are the figures of the Buddha's 10 deciples dating back to the Qing Dynasty which illustrate stories of rhe silkroad are also on display. At the back is 张掖山西会馆. Built in 1730, The hall was originally funded by Shanxi merchants living in Zhangye to rebuild the Guandi Temple, and was a place for Jin merchants to discuss affairs and cultural exchanges. The building complex is laid out along the central axis, and its style integrates the characteristics of the court and folk. It is now a key national cultural relics protection unit.

No photography is allowed in the main hall. But the size of the reclining Buddha is huge and the building still standing after 1000+ years is really a testament to time.

Nature creates beautiful, magnificent and spectacular. The landscape is very beautiful, the colorful mountains are recommended and not disappointed.

Zhangye National Wetland Park, located in Gansu Province, China, is a captivating oasis nestled in the arid landscapes of the Gobi Desert. Positioned in the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains, the park spans the counties of Linze and Sunan, under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Zhangye. The main areas include the Linze Danxia Scenic Area, Binggou Scenic Area, and Sunan Danxia Scenic Area, each offering unique attractions and natural beauty. The park’s Linze Danxia Scenic Area, situated 30 kilometers west of downtown Zhangye and 20 kilometers south of Linze County, is its most developed and visited section. Officially inaugurated on August 3, 2014, the Binggou Scenic Area lies on the north bank of the Liyuan River, covering 300 square kilometers with elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 meters. Meanwhile, the Sunan Danxia Scenic Area is located in Ganjun, south of Linze. Zhangye National Wetland Park boasts a stunning ecosystem that contrasts sharply with the surrounding desert. It features clear lakes, vast reed marshes, lush woodlands, and vibrant flower gardens. This harmonious interplay of water and greenery creates a serene environment for visitors. The park is a haven for wildlife, providing a habitat for numerous bird species, including migratory birds, as well as various mammals and reptiles. In addition to its natural beauty, the park offers cultural experiences through traditional architecture and exhibits that reflect the region’s heritage. Visitors can enjoy activities such as boat rides, bird watching, and hiking, while immersing themselves in the local traditions. One of the most remarkable features of the area is the Zhangye National Geopark, commonly referred to as the Rainbow Mountains of China. This geological wonder showcases layers of colorful mineral deposits exposed through weathering and erosion, creating a breathtaking spectrum of hues across the mountains. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, as the weather is pleasant and the park is teeming with life. Visitors are encouraged to dress comfortably, bring sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent, and respect the park's natural environment by avoiding disturbances to wildlife. The park is located in the northern foothills of the Qilian Mountains, in the counties of Linze and Sunan, which are under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Zhangye, Gansu province. The main areas of Danxia landform are in Kangle and Baiyin townships. The core area of the park, Linze Danxia Scenic Area, is located 30 kilometres (19 mi) west of downtown Zhangye and 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of the seat of Linze County. It is the most developed and most visited part of the park. A second scenic area, Binggou, located on the north bank of Liyuan River, was officially inaugurated on 3 August 2014. Binggou covers an area of 300 square kilometres (120 sq mi), and its elevation ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 meters above sea level. A third area, Sunan Danxia Scenic Area, is located in Ganjun, south of Linze.

This reclaimed industrial zone now hosts 193 bird species, including rare Saunders' gulls. The boardwalk's recycled plastic planks contain QR codes revealing what factory waste they were made from. Full moons make the reeds cast shadows like Chinese ink paintings across the paths.

This is the  Zhangye National Geopark in Gansu province, commonly called ‘The Rainbow Mountains of China’. What appears to be paint daubed across the mountains is actually a spectrum of mineral deposits that were revealed by weathering and erosion of the surface. The layers of ground beneath were exposed, complete with all of their wonderfully beautiful and colorful chemistry.

One of the best tourist places I have ever visited in China, in terms of price, amenities, staff & the "natural" view. They have a KFC as well as other food available. Most or the bus stops (for viewing) has bathroom facilities. The entrance/ ticket building bathroom should be a benchmark for all the Chinese attractions. Nov 2019 - ticket was 75CNY (including bus fee - The bus takes you from one viewing area to another). See attached pic for the actual GPS location. Bring your passport for tickets. You can carry food and drinks inside. Avoid Chinese holidays. Be patient, you are guaranteed to be accompanied by obnoxious people. Kudos to the management of Danxia Park.

Go early to beat the crowds. Reality does meet expectations as far as colors. You go inside and a free bus will take you from platform to platform. It's worth a visit as it is unique and beautiful.

There are many entrances (north, south, east and west) to get there. This place is amazing in nature and very convenient by nurturing. Trails are very good. You can spend a whole day there. There are many stops to go. You just basically need a great camera, good shoes and a hat with u here. I strongly recommend you to experience this place with yr eyes.

The geological park in the Chinese province of Gansu is famous for its unusual natural treasure - colorful rock formations made of multi-colored sandstone rocks and conglomerates, dating primarily to the Cretaceous period. About a hundred million years ago, on the site of the mountains there was a natural pool, which later dried up, and its sediment oxidized, taking on an unusually beautiful variegated color.

Amazing landscape created by mother nature. You can choose the private tour ticket. Though the price is a little bit higher than regular ticket, it can help you to avoid the crowd and visit some special spot that the regular ticket can not. Wonderful place to enjoy the world-famous geologic prodigy.

Discover the fascinating Wei and Jin tomb murals at Metro Wei and Jin tomb in Jiayuguan, also known as the 'Mouth of China'. This ancient tomb group dates back to the 3rd to 5th centuries and features over 1,400 tombs with colorful murals depicting daily life during the Wei and Jin dynasties. The site is often referred to as an underground art gallery due to its large number of well-preserved paintings.
Well maintained original tomb of a rich couple, showing amazing building technology, with many drawings on the walls illustrating their daily lives, male on one side and female on the other. The tomb should be more than 1700 years. This is one of the many tombs discovered, and there should be more which are yet to be excavated.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Jiayuguan Great Wall Culture Tourism Scenic Area, nestled in the southwest of Jiayuguan City in Gansu Province, is a remarkable destination steeped in history. This area encompasses the iconic Jiayuguan Pass, a significant fortification along the ancient Silk Road that once connected China to Central Asia and Europe.
At the Pickup Point, Guide got our tickets from the Tourist Service Centre. The compound is big, with many advertisement and stalls with rows of wall on both sides art copper tooling pictures on “Journey to the West”, some historical classics & the famous Chinese Opium War Viceroy of Liangguang, Commissioner Lin Xezu. The bus took us to the entrance of Jiayuguan Pass, met General Fengshen statue (the constructor for Jiayuguan Pass) , walked through many food stalls, finally ticket checks into the grounds of Jiayuguan Fortress. We enter through the Gate of Enlightment , inside tourist Map Guide are displayed, all about the history on this Fortress. There is a Great Wall Culture & Creative Museum for tourists to buy some souvenirs to bring home. For those who did not prefer to have a local guide, they could rent an Audio Guide from a stall nearby. At the Guandi Temple entrance , a 15 mins live performance attracted many tourists. After they dispersed, a tour inside the Guandi Temple to see all the statues & paintings on walls. From the Gate, there are horse lanes with steps leading up to the top where we can wonder around. From here we had the opportunities to watch the live soldiers performances on their battle ground. At the exit , we were greeted by a live performance from the local uighers, and some camels waiting for us to take a ride or photography session. At the same time , there are the exciting 4 wheel motor riding to take a look at Jiayuguan Pass from the Gobi Desert. Indeed a commercialised Jiayuguan Pass !!! All in all ,we can see that several restorations has been done to protect the structure of this fort , towers and walls, but there are still some in its original forms

Jiayuguan Pass used to be the starting point of the ancient Great Wall built during Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644). It was the most important military defensive project guarding the far northwestern area of China because of its strategic location at the narrowest point of the western section of the Hexi Corridor which had been the vital defensive frontier since Han Dynasty (BC 202—220). After the Jiayuguan Pass was constructed, the army of Ming Dynasty used it to protect inner China from the invasion of nomadic groups. At the same time, the Jiayuguan Pass had also played as a key waypoint of the ancient Silk Road.

The ancient great wall can be seen, but all buildings, walls and temples are built from brick and concrete for tourism business. It is a nice place to visit, but the big wall 1.5h north of Beijing was more impressive to visit.

After lunch, time to take a walk at the great wall. It is the west end of the Ming dynasty great wall. The 嘉峪关 represents the end of the Great wall along the silk road. It is also the main passes of the Great wall during the Ming dynasty that foreign merchants and envoys from central Asia and west Asia mostly entered China through. A famous legend recounts the meticulous planning involved in the construction of the pass. According to legend, when Jiayuguan was being planned, the official in charge asked the designer to estimate the exact number of bricks required and the designer gave him a number (99,999). The official questioned his judgment, asking him if that would be enough, so the designer added one brick. After the project was completed, there was only one brick left over. The quick-witted architect claimed the brick was a magical guardian placed by a supernatural being to ensure the stability of the fortress, and that its removal would cause the entire structure to collapse. Unwilling to take the risk, the supervisor allowed the brick to remain in its place. The brick can still be seen on a ledge on the inner gate tower today. Not as majestic as the great wall in Beijing but one might not visit this part of the Great wall....

Jiayuguan was built as a fortress during the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century. The 'first pier', the 'hidden wall' and a connecting wall were later added extending from the fortress. Its purpose was to block off the path completely between the two rivers (Something like in the photo). I really loved the historical significance of this place! It was my first time in China, and I got to learn a bit about the Great Wall of China, the westernmost section of it.

Very important historical site, but as a tourism sight, it's nothing much to see. Came during peak summer, and the sun was unforgiven, worse is that there's no shade at the site to hide under,so make sure to pack an umbrella. If you like to buy souvenirs and do historical cosplay pictures this is a great spot, but the other parts of the Great Wall are better.

Jiayuguan, also known as the 'Mouth of China,' is a significant gateway to the ancient Chinese silk road. The Overhanging Great Wall, also called Jiayuguan Pass, is located six kilometers southwest of the city and represents the western starting point of a section of the Ming Dynasty's Great Wall. This historical site offers visitors a chance to marvel at lifelike murals depicting daily scenes from ancient Wei and Jin Dynasties.
This place is AMAZING! Why does it have lukewarm reviews?! The entrance itself is pretty touristy, as are the art exhibit and Silk Road camel sculptures, but the great wall and surrounding area itself is stunning! After entrance, go up on top of the fort (new), and climb to the right all the way up the mountain on the wall - it’s gorgeous. Past the last guardtower, they have hiking trails in the mountains and you can hike there for a few hours (depending on how adventurous you are). Enjoy!

(Translated by Google) The sister cave of Mogao Grottoes is hidden in an elm forest in the Guazhou Desert. The number of murals open to visitors is much smaller than that of the Mogao Grottoes, but the quality of the special grottoes is not bad at all, such as the Water Moon Guanyin copied by Zhang Daqian, the Maitreya Pure Land Transformation, Manjusri Transformation, Samantabhadra Transformation, etc. The explanation time is twice as long as that of Mogao Grottoes, and the explanation is very detailed. It is a very good experience for few people. You can sign up for a one-day tour from Dunhuang, or charter a car for a day. Self-driving is also very convenient, the road conditions are simple, and there are few high-speed buses.

(Translated by Google) In any case, compared to the Mogao Caves, there are far fewer people. However, the guide will not show you around unless a certain number of people gather. It is not possible to tour the cave without a guide. But there's no one there. (Original) とにかく莫高窟に比べると、圧倒的に人がいない。 ただ、一定人数が集まらないとガイドが案内しない。 ガイドが案内しないと窟内の見学は出来ない。 でも、人がいない。

(Translated by Google) The Yulin Grottoes are a group of stone caves that were excavated from the Tang Dynasty to the Yuan and Qing Dynasties, with a total of 42 caves carved into the cliffs on both the east and west sides of a deep gorge carved by the Yulin River. The main objects of appreciation are mural paintings from the Tang Dynasty, the Five Dynasties, and Western Xia. The normal admission fee for the open cave is 40 yuan, but if you request a foreign language interpreter (some Japanese speakers are available), it costs 55 yuan. Cave 25 from the Middle Tang Dynasty (Tubo period) and Cave 2 from Western Xia are special paid caves. There are many interesting murals in Cave 2, including a statue of Suigetsu Kannon, a statue of Xuanzang Tripitaka accompanied by a monkey-faced attendant, and a list of memorial service names written in Western Xia characters. The Yulin Grottoes, like the Mogao Grottoes, are under the jurisdiction of the Dunhuang Research Institute, but the restrictions on what can be brought into the caves are much stricter than the Mogao Grottoes, and all backpacks, single-lens cameras, etc. must be left at the cultural relics storage area at the entrance. . However, you are allowed to take pictures of the exterior of the cave on the path outside the cave, so it is a good idea to have a smartphone with a camera in your pocket.

(Translated by Google) The sister cave of Mogao Grottoes is worth a visit The murals in Yulin Grottoes are well preserved. Some of the images have not been seen in grottoes in other areas, such as the image of the supporter of the Cao family of Guazhou Jiedushi (Cave 19), the image of the painter of Dugoutang Academy of Painting, etc. A statue of Guanyin on the Water in the Western Xia Dynasty, with the bright moon in the sky as the background, Guanyin sitting on a stone beside the water, with delicate features and a half-naked body. The artistic techniques of murals include iron line drawing, ancient gossamer drawing, and orchid leaf drawing. The value of Yulin Grottoes is mainly reflected in the murals. The murals in Yulin Grottoes are very rich in content, including portraits of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Buddhist story paintings, flowers and animals, decorative patterns, etc. Yulin Grottoes and Mogao Grottoes are of the same origin in terms of content, artistic style, and painting form, and they are both sister caves. It has a certain influence both at home and abroad. In the figure paintings, there are images of Xixia and Mongolian people with special clothes and appearance. Therefore, the murals of the Xixia and Yuan Dynasties reflect the mutual influence between the artistic tradition of the Han nation and the artistic traditions of the Xixia, Mongolian and other ethnic minorities. In this regard, the Yulin Grottoes can make up for the shortcomings of the Mogao Grottoes.
