Mountain peak
Outdoor Activities
Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand, stands at 2,565 meters above sea level and is located within the Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai province. This stunning destination offers a cool climate and diverse attractions such as lush forests, waterfalls, and hill tribe cultures. The summit features the impressive Naphamethinidon and Naphaphonphumisiri pagodas with panoramic views.
The Place is serene and Calm. You can walk around the trail and if it is drizzling, it feels heavenly. Do check out their interpretation centre as well. We rode our bikes to this spot and the route is also very beautiful. The entry fees is about 300 baht per person and 20 baht per bike. It is totally worth it. The highest point of Thailand is highly recommended.

It’s actually so cold~ I wasnt expecting that. at chiang mai it was probably 27-30C, but up there it was 16C. bring a jacket! Went without a guide so im not sure what i missed. but i checked out both pagodas, the 2 trails near the tip of area, which is the highest point in thailand amazing!
Jonnibeans — Google review
The temples are okay, in my opinion the brown temple is much more beautiful, it has crazy reliefs. If you want to see temples because of the art, then I recommend it, but if it's because of the pictures that Google shows, then most of the time it's cloudy there and there's fog... take that into account.
YOAV L — Google review
This is beautiful place at the highest point. Things you need to know. Bring a coat or jacket depending on the time of year. You also may bring an umbrella. Because you are literally walking in the clouds. Sometimes the visibility is zero. I was shocked at all the beautiful flowers and the history of this place. Worth the visit. Also the roads a winding. Canbe slippery when wet. The temperature will drop like a rock.
Walt's A — Google review
Lovely trails at the summit with good information. The lower trail round the small swampy area is superb - we were told so by people leaving the trail and we agree. A small store by the information building sells good coffee.
James P — Google review
So so beautiful. We rented a car ourselves and payed for the entrance fare at the ticket office for 300 Baht each plus some extra baht for the car. We hadn’t realised the pagoda area was separate from the park fee (extra ~100 B each). It’s worth going earlier as we went relatively early but found just enough time to get what we wanted to see done.
Sara W — Google review
Great place to visit. This is the highest altitude in Thailand. There are shops and walking trails. Plenty of parking. There are a lot of tourists that visit. Plan for fog and drizzle, be prepared for the cool weather. It's a beautiful destination. On a clear day you will get very great views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
Roger N — Google review
Doi Inthanon, often called “The Roof of Thailand,” is a breathtaking destination that offers a perfect mix of cool climate, mountain views, and lush nature. Located about two hours from Chiang Mai, it’s ideal for a day trip or even an overnight getaway. The highlight is reaching the summit, where temperatures can drop significantly – a rare treat in tropical Thailand! Along the way, visitors can explore famous waterfalls like Wachirathan, visit the stunning King and Queen pagodas with panoramic views and colorful gardens, and enjoy scenic nature trails such as Kew Mae Pan. Birdwatchers and nature lovers will be delighted by the park’s rich biodiversity. It’s also a great spot to learn about local hill tribe culture and enjoy fresh mountain air. Peaceful, scenic, and rejuvenating — Doi Inthanon is a must-visit for anyone traveling to northern Thailand.

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Phra Mahathat Naphamethanidon is a must-see attraction located near the highest point of Doi Inthanon. It is one of the Twin Royal Pagodas, featuring intricate designs and decorations that impress any visitor. The pagoda is surrounded by spectacular gardens with a wide variety of well-maintained plants and flowers, offering a peaceful and relaxing experience. Visitors are recommended to explore the different areas of the gardens at their own pace.
Popularly known as the twin pagoda, this stunning landmark is particularly breathtaking on clear days. temperature in this area is consistently lower than in other parts of Thailand. It is essential to note that private vehicles are not permitted to access the pagoda; instead, visitors must park their cars in the designated parking area and then Take a songthaew to the pagoda. A dress code is enforced, prohibiting short dresses, although skirts are provided for visitors to wear when entering the temple. elevator service is available to ascend to the top of the pagoda, or visitors can opt to take the stairs. Additionally, the temple complex features numerous food and souvenir shops.

The Royal Pagodas of Noppamethanedon & Nopphonphusiri are an absolutely stunning highlight of any trip to Doi Inthanon! Perched majestically near Thailand's highest peak, the twin chedis are a magnificent tribute, surrounded by exquisitely manicured gardens that burst with color year-round. The architecture itself is beautiful, but the real showstopper is the breathtaking panoramic view of the mountain landscape. The cool, serene atmosphere makes it a truly memorable and peaceful visit. A definite must-see!
Faris L — Google review
If you head to Doi Inthanon, do not miss this! A beautiful, serene space to pay respects to the past King and Queen...even with tourists around. The pagodas are impressive and the ceilings are lined with beautiful mosaics. Then there's the gardens...absolutely stunning. You park about 2 minutes up the road and purchase tickets. Then you are transported to the pagodas. Well worth the visit.
Liz A — Google review
We were looking forward to going here at Doi Inthanon but the weather was not good. Such a shame as we had seen that the views are amazing. Combined this with trekking and seeing local villages and waterfalls so it was a very good day out. The gardens at the pagodas looked like they would be wonderful through the mist. Recommend going here as part of a day trip.
Robert S — Google review
A very beautiful pair of Pagodas with a small garden. Just make sure to check weather forecast - if there's a cloud on top of the mountain, it will be chilling there (about +13 Celsius), and you won't be able to enjoy the magnificent view
Александр С — Google review
amazing scenery even though it was a foggy , we still had the opportunity to take pictures of the twin pagodas. you might want to bring a sweater and long pants because its cold on the top of the mountain. here is some info regarding the pagoda ! if you are visiting solo bring a tripod to take picture you wont regret it ! Popularly known as the twin pagoda, this stunning landmark is particularly breathtaking on clear days. unfortunately the weather changes and its hard to predict . temperature in this area is consistently lower than in other parts of Thailand (16 °C on Wednesday 6th August) . It is essential to note that private vehicles are not permitted to access the pagoda; instead, visitors must park their cars in the designated parking area near by and then Take a songthaew to the pagoda for 50 or 100thb round trip. A dress code is enforced, prohibiting short dresses, although skirts are provided for visitors to wear when entering the temple. elevator service is available to ascend to the top of the pagoda, or visitors can opt to take the stairs. Additionally, the temple complex features numerous food and souvenir shops. toilets were very clean and accessible for disabled people .
Angelos A — Google review
Get ready for a human design that stands tall and high and above... The Pagoda twins are a thing of beauty of you ever visit Chiang Mai. If you drive you need to park at the designated spot and then take a taxi to the top... a good way to preserve the area. Don't forget to give a tally of where you'refrom. They got their first Nigerian!
Temitayo C — Google review
Visited the Royal Pagodas on a day trip from Chiang Mai and it was one of the highlights. The temples themselves are beautiful, but it’s the surrounding gardens and views that really make it special. Set up in the hills, the air is cooler and the scenery is stunning.

Kew Mae Pan nature trail

Mentioned on
1 list
Hiking area
Outdoor Activities
The Kew Mae Pan nature trail is a 3-kilometer loop that offers a guided hike through dense forests, passing by a stunning waterfall and leading to a viewing platform with breathtaking mountain vistas. The trail starts at the Kew Mae Viewpoint parking lot and provides an easy yet slightly challenging trek. Visitors can enjoy scenic views of the mountains and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the area.
It's about a 3 km trail with quite a bit of climbing. Most of the path is paved with wood so it makes it easier to find the trail. At the entrance to the trail the information desk staff says that we need to get a guide by paying THB 200 per group. However, there is very little help from the assigned tour guide from the local community and they barely speak English. Our guide seemed to care less about making it an experience and more about getting us to finish early. If it is allowed to enter the trail without a guide, I would highly recommend doing so. The trail itself is beautiful and has multiple scenic view points. It was a wonderful experience to go through the forest and waterfalls. If you are not fit be mindful that there is a lot of uphill climbing but you can take your time to take breaks throughout the trail.
Chathurika R — Google review
This 2-hour trek felt extra special because… I’ve missed mountains. Living in Bangkok means being surrounded by buildings, not peaks — and as someone who used to hike twice a month back in Korea, this was long overdue. And wow — Thailand, you have beautiful mountains too?!💙 The trail was refreshing, scenic, and gave me all the nature I didn’t realize I’d been craving. Grateful for every step and every view. Falling more and more in love with this country 🇹🇭♥️
Yesran — Google review
Beautiful trail – but only worth it with a clear view • 200 Baht per group (up to 10 people) for a guide – or more accurately, a quiet companion (no English spoken). • Trail is open from 06:00 AM to 04:00 PM. • Approx. 3 km / 2-mile loop. • Difficulty: I’d say moderate. It starts with an uphill section (mostly stairs), then becomes mostly downhill – but there are still several ups and downs, including more staircases. • Open from November to May; closed during the rainy season (June to October). • Trailhead is located at around 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) above sea level. • For us it was not really warm and not really cold. So we just used a thin jacket as we reached the viewpoint and relaxed for a while. It was totally fine. If the skies are clear, the view must be stunning. Unfortunately, for us it wasn’t worth the effort – everything was covered in thick white mist (fog, clouds, or whatever it was). Still, we gave it a try, and there was always a chance to catch a great view, as many others have before. So make sure to choose the right day and the right time – otherwise, it might not be worth it.
Viktoria S — Google review
We had a great experience over here we spent roughly around 3 to 4 hours around. There are a lot of breathtaking views during the trail. You can see big trees and birds. The temperature will vary depending on the season, it was around 18 degrees during Feb. The path was not tough even 60+ aged people are starting the trail. But there will be some stairs. If you are healthy enough to walk for 5kms straight and able to walk in the stairs you are good to go. There are some places to sit and rest in between. If you are lucky and the place is not foggy you can witness breathtaking views of the mountains.
Siva G — Google review
Amazing trail with superb views even when it is cloudy. Approximatly 1h30 loop with a guide included in the 200 baht fees per group at the entrance. Easy hike. Beautiful at the main viewpoint
David D — Google review
Definitely a great hike in the mountain! Drive to the parking lot right next to the start of the trail. The bathroom and little shops for drinks and food are available at the start-finish of the trail. The hike required a local guide to take you through the trail and it cost 200 baht per group, ours was for 4 people. The guide who looked after us was very informative and pointed out many interesting plants along the way. He is also very good at taking good photos from all the beautiful spots on the trail. The trail is in the loop with a total distance of 3.2 km and about 230 metres of elevation gain. It's a rolling terrain with a great well kept path and free walking bamboo stick provided at the start of the walk. Definitely a recommended hike on the Doi Inthanon!
Penny G — Google review
Paid 300 at the checkpoint, and some other spots charge additional fees. This trail were closed. Maintenance was poor. The views weren't that impressive. What I did enjoy was the fresh air and cool weather at the mountain summit.
Yaw Z — Google review
Great trail. It's not a 'hike' in terms of tough terrain, nice cleared tracks and a guide the whole way. Guides are 200 baht per group and you must take one. It was about a 30 minute wait on a weekday at around 11am. Took about an hour and a half but it all depends how long you stop around the trail for photos and admire the view.

Pong Dueat Geyser

Mentioned on
1 list
Nature & Parks
Hot Springs & Geysers
Pong Duet Geyser is a unique natural attraction located in Thailand. The journey to the geyser is an adventure in itself, with a road that offers stunning views of steep hilltops and an Avatar-like natural landscape. Visitors can easily access the geyser area, even with 110cc scooters. The geyser itself is impressive, offering a rare opportunity to witness the forces of nature at work.
Amazing! One of the coolest parks I have ever seen. The hot water mineral baths are heavenly. Also very educational with detailed explanations about the various plant and animal species. This place is worth a visit..
Bee P — Google review
Unfortunately, this national park was quite disappointing. The geyser is nice – it's fascinating to boil eggs in the hot water. That alone earns it a star. However, the rest of the park left much to be desired. The walking path was poorly maintained, and while the vegetation had been cut back, it was done in a way that took away from the natural beauty. The thermal baths were in really poor condition – only two out of five were usable to be inside for one second because they were extremely hot. The others were dirty, with greenish water. Unfortunately, the restrooms were also really far from inviting, see the pics. Overall, we wouldn’t recommend to visit, especially for 300 bht.
Julina S — Google review
We visited the hot springs in June. And thought we could reall relax in the hot springs. But after paying 300 bath per person to enter the national parks we discovered the place to be entirely deserted, no people, no maintained pools. Looks like they are closed fo off-season or something. Except for dipping you toes into the hot water spring and walking around the path to the Geysir there are no pools or anything open. At least I wouldn't consider them open because the water is stale, almost brown/black with dirt.
Fabian L — Google review
The road is good with the usual steep hills and bends of the area. I wouldn’t travel in the rain as there is a lot of debris and narrow areas for landslides. The geyser itself was amazing with billowing steam and constant bubbling water in a natural environment.
R2thebizel — Google review
The way from the Main Street is a kind of adventurous. It was like a way through a deep jungle and with a sign “beware of wild animals “ made it a bit scary but we had luck and it was all fine. Don’t miss to buy some eggs to cook in the geyser. It’s top activity to do at the hot springs or Geyser in Thailand. It was quite fun. The geyser is not so big but they have some pools for a bath (you will have to pay extra) but we didn’t do it though. Anyway it’s a nice stop and if you have been to Huai Nam Dang national park, you can use the ticket there to get in this Geyser without additional fees.
Som M — Google review
It’s our second time in this place. First time 13 years ago without kids and this time with 2 kids. We payed 300 B per person and 30 for the car (didn’t pay for the kids (150 B). The place haven’t change. We parked the car it the entrance and walked around about 1.5 hours. Was mice to see the nature
Irina L — Google review
Great place. The road towards the Geyser from the mainroad is already very excited with avatar like nature looks with steep hilltops. No problem for our 110cc scooters to reach. Geyser was impressive as I never saw one before nor thought about this nature force. Plenty of activities to do there. At parking one you find showers with mineral water coming from the geyser. There is a very nice stream there too which you can hike if you are up for adventure. Its clear water so possible to dip in at certain self found spots. At parking two (under trees) you see bungalows which are luxurious. Good for honeymoon stop I would definitely say. On the other side of the parking/road is a 300m path that leads to the geyser. You can also follow a path downwards from there folowing the stream leading you to the two beautiful pools which were not dirty at all as some wrote. Its just very natural with a constant flow of fresh hot water coming from the geyser. There are also 10 private houses there you can rent for taking a bath. They should open those on the mountain side in my opinion for a great avatar like view. If you drive past parking two in the middle you arrive also at the pools. I woukd call it parking 3. You can also put up a tent there for 30 bath and enjoy an incredible sunrise from the upper mineral bath. You can easily spent half a day there relaxing or if hiking even longer. Ticket is 300 bath and 30 for motor. If you stay the night the same ticket will do. In combination with other attractions around Pai you get a discount of 150 bath (only half the price). I am not sure which ones. You have to check yourself. Enjoyed every bit of it!
Rutger C — Google review
Very cool place with hot springs. Especially nice when raining outside. You can also enjoy a sorry walk to the geyser or a longer walk in the nature reserve.

A lovely waterfall in Doi Inthanon National Park requires only a short walk and a little bit of hike from the main entrance. Visitors can get close to the waterfall to enjoy the relaxing view or have a photograph taken with the waterfall. It is also a good place to rest after a long day and drive. There are seating areas for visitors who do not wish to take a walk to the waterfall area.

If you're visiting Doi Inthanon, make sure to take the time to visit the nearby waterfall. It's truly a remarkable sight, with a rainbow often visible amidst the falling water. The waterfall is a popular stop on tours of Doi Inthanon and well worth the visit. The natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere make it a great place to relax and take in the scenery. I highly recommend stopping by this waterfall during your time in the area, it's truly a magnificent sight to see.

Well I don't know where to start... I left this place with mixed feelings. On the one hand side it was a really hearttaking and happy feeling that you take care about such fantastic creatures. On the other hand side I felt really bad about how we treat our planet or our animals. Abusing and killing them for stupid reasons.. and then we need such nice and heartwarming places like the Elephant Sanctuary to cure and recover what we first destoyed. I really hope you find a nice way to keep that place like it is without commercialising it to much! Thank you Adam and all the other people working on that place. Adam as I told you I would like to help with a monthly donation. Even if it is not kinda a million I can afford I would be happy to help. It would be nice to hear from you for any details how I can help. It is important for me that the money goes directly into it. Thank you for such an amazing feeling and a nice time with those elephants. I hope you make them all happy again! Dennis
Dennis B — Google review
I can not really compare, but I think the elephants are treated well and have a nice surrounding. I hope it’s really a place to rescue the animals, not only for the tourists. But the experience and the tour was great. We did a one day tour and went to both of their places. In the morning, at the first place we were maybe to many people but still okay. Second place was very calm, we were only four people and there were 3 big elephants plus the baby. Probably different every day. Both places we got some clothes, were told how to act and fed them, had some time to get to know them and just play with them. Very special to be so close to those big and lovely animals. It was also nice to get some pictures via Facebook afterwards.

An amazing experience! We spent 2 days and one night and i highly recommend it. We befriended the staff (they are great and kind and just good vibes!) and enjoyed some amazing stories next to the bonfire about the Karen tribe and their beautiful relationship with the elephants. How they became Mahouts and their unconditional love for these animals (no abuse or violence is used)! One of the most beautiful experiences of my life!
Andrea C — Google review
This was a phenomenal experience. We spent a full day with this organization that has created a sanctuary for abused elephants. They actually have 2 camps and we visited both. We fed the elephants, played with them in the water and made a mixture of vitamins for them to take. These gentle giants are now being well kept after years of being harmed. I highly recommend a visit. This is a small group experience, with about 20 at the first camp in the morning and only 4 of us at the 2nd camp - which was great! Do yourself a favor and do not leave the Chiang Mai area without a visit to the Maeklang Elephants Conservation Community.

I've been traveling just over a week in Thailand and this definitely has been the highlight of my trip so far. Being able to be so close to the elephants was simply amazing! The elephants are not chained, no hooks or whips or anything harmful is used. Instead they are able to able to roam freely and are provided shade. You can tell they are indeed loved, appreciated and cared for. I was picked up from my hotel just a bit after 7:30 in an air conditioned minivan. We drove for about 1 1/2 hours to the most gorgeous location ever!! After a brief introduction to the plight of elephants, we were loaned hilltribe clothes (shorts, shirt, and flip flops) to change into- very comfy- and a bag to hold bananas with a separate zippered pocket for our camera. There was a changing area, shower area, many toilets (western style!) and lockers for our valuables. We loaded up our bags with bananas and off we went to feed the elephants. It was a bit intimidated to be surrounded by these large animals, but they were indeed friendly and eager to be fed... Plus many staff was there to guide us and encourage safety. Mr.T, our wonderful guide, also took many photos to be posted on Facebook. After banana feeding, we went to give the elephants a mud bath followed by a rinse in the river. It was great fun and the baby elephant was especially having a good time, rolling and splashing in the mud and water. I was worried because I didn't have a swimsuit, but luckily we were able to just wear out hilltribe clothes. We changed into normal clothes after and I was surprised that a delicious meal was included for us as well. What a bonus! Overall it was an absolutely fantastic experience by an operation that does NOT exploit the elephant in any way.
Kathy F — Google review
We had an incredible day today, getting to spend so much time with the 6 elephants, we learnt lots about them and their pasts and then fed them lots of food, took a mud bath together and washed them all off afterwards. The staff are so fun and friendly and it's amazing to see how much they care and interact with the elephants. Easily one of the best days of my life, thank you.
Harley B — Google review
We did 2 days 1 night. We had a great time, we fed the elephants a couple of times, prepared the food for them and bathed them. Our trip apparently didn't include seeing their 7 months old elephant, but we just mentioned it and then they took us there too :P Great trip, they might not have the best English, but they are kind and helpful!
Jakob Y — Google review
After many hours of research was dedicated to finding the right sanctuary with ethical treatment of elephants, my partner and I were overjoyed with Maeklang Elephant Conservation. Many facilities call themselves "conservation centers" or "sanctuaries" and promote "no ride" elephant experiences, however bull hooks, bamboo sticks and chains are still used to control and abuse these incredible creatures. Meakhan Elephant Conservation was NOT like this and exactly what we were looking for! An hour and a half drive outside of Chiang Mai, this properly has 6 rescued elephants, including a 7 month old. The elephants seemed very happy and comfortable in their new safe environment! The carers were kind, concienscious of both elephant and tourist safety, and genuinely enjoyed their jobs. There were NO CHAINS and NO BULLHOOKS!!! The elephants were free to do as they pleased. These gentle giants enjoyed taking bananas and watermelons from our snack pouches. They were very comfortable with us stroking them and taking photos, but if they wanted to leave, that was okay too. Afterwards, a few were happy to join in a mud bath. And when the elephants decided the bath was enough, they were free to do so. For an up close elephant experience that is ethical and with the elephants safety and care as the top priority, Maeklang is the place to go!!! Let me save you the time endlessly researching- seriously!

Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong Worawihan is a stunning Buddhist temple complex that captivates visitors with its ornate golden shrines and vibrant statues. Nestled near the charming village of Ban Thawai, known for its rich tradition in woodcarving, this area showcases exquisite craftsmanship influenced by various indigenous styles including Lanna and Tibetan. The temple is part of the revered Relics of the Four Peaks, which hold significant cultural importance to both locals and travelers alike.
It was a wonderful stay with the guidance of Mrs. Jirapa , who was so helpful during the process of doing Vipasana . If it was not for her, I could had no finished the 3 weeks of doing Vipasana. The monastery is beautiful . Full of old history of the Buddha . His presence can be felt it. I strongly recommend.

We have been there for a 10 day retreat and enjoyed the great introduction into Vipassana meditation with many other people from all over the world. We met many international meditators. Jirapa provided a great assistance to get used to monastery life and meditation. We hope to have the chance to come back someday.

Amazing and Beautiful Thai temple in Chiang Mai. Must visit this place, very cool museum and interesting history of this temple. More info for who’s interested to learning, practicing meditation by the teacher. Must visit

I was there for 6 days in October. I am incredibly glad that my first acquaintance with Vipassana happened in this place. It was incredibly difficult, but mentors and teachers are doing everything possible to make your path more comfortable. Large temple area, near a lake, adapted food, good accommodation. I will definitely come back here🙏🏽

I found this wonderful place through Google review, so here's my contribution as well. For me it was an incredible personal journey, I left lighter both in body and mind, with a better direct understanding of meditation and Buddhism. I highly appreciate what Ajahn Tong has brought to life here, with all the monks, nuns and laypersons involved, that give acces to everybody to acces Dharma and live a better life. It is a very good environment to experience a better way of being. This being said, here are few more specific points that might help: - a strong emphasis on walking meditation practice and sitting meditation, with simple, clear but also detailed instructions and gradual complexity - introduction tour in the first 2 days by a welcoming layperson, then daily interviews with a senior monk - own kuti with bathroom - lots of beautiful meditation halls - 2 delicious meals per day - everything is inside the main monastery grounds, so you are close to the Buddhist way of life (involvement is optional, with the exception of the opening and closing ceremony) - outlined daily program, but you are individually responsible for your meditation practice - no group meditation sessions (except the optional chanting / meditation with the monks and nuns in the morning or evening) I stayed for 7 full days, and it was just enough! I would be curious to try the full 21 days program though. I highly recommend this experience, at least once in a lifetime! May all beings be free from suffering!

I completed the 21-day Vipassana program here, and what an experience it has been! 🧘🏼‍♂️🌸 Wat Chom Thong is a beautiful monastery, with numerous temples and meditation halls of all kinds, 90 minutes west of Chiang Mai. The monastery, a towering golden temple with several buildings and living quarters, offers a set of incredible Vipassana retreats, which are ongoing throughout the entire year, both for Thai and for internationals. This place is incredible. It's run by monks and nuns, welcoming meditators who wish to toughen their mind-body connection and have some space to rest, find clarity and equanimity. Unlike Goenka, which lasts 10 days, has very strict and well-defined rules to follow to the letter, here things are more relaxed and flexible, relying on your own wisdom and judgement. There are rules and eight precepts which you must abide by, but in general you are the master of your own experience here. You are encouraged to keep silent as much as you can, though many choose to socialize with other meditators during the breaks in between meditations. There’s a beautiful, small lake behind the monastery, with breathtaking sunrises early in the morning. There is even a “coffee garden”, a charming cafe immersed in nature, where you can stop by to get a cappuccino, an ice coffee or, my favorite, a hot foamy green tea with soy milk. The living quarters are simple but functional and clean. They give you a room with everything you need, and no more, which I feel strikes a good balance. The schedule is quite tough: wake up at 4am with the sound of the bells (and the half-stray dogs who enthusiastically share the space with you), breakfast at 6am, then lunch at 11am, and no more solid food until the next day. The rest of the time you meditate. Here, you disconnect to reconnect. No phones, no music, no movies, no reading, no writing, speaking as little as possible… although there is really nobody there to police you. It’s up to you, really. I’ve seen some people meditating 12-14 hours a day and not speaking to anyone, and people who took it a lot more lightly, checking instagram and doing home calls between meditations, although the latter didn’t last very long. They are quite flexible, both with the practice and the length of your stay. Some people do 5 days, others 10. If you can, I suggest doing the 21-day program, and then see how you feel, perhaps even continue with the advanced. Personally, I had my breakthroughs after the 11th day. If I had stopped earlier, I would’ve left with a completely different view of this place, its people, and of myself. I won’t go into the experience of the practice itself, it’s something you have to discover on your own. I was lucky to have Phra Ajahn Poonsak (Art) Suwadhano as my teacher, a gentle soul dedicated to helping others strengthen their mind and body through the practice of Vipassana. Even though he’s been fighting a fatal disease for a long time, he still came to give us guidance. Some days he was too ill to come in person, but he always made time for me. Really an inspiration. As the final days were approaching, I wanted to ask if I could stay a bit longer. Before I could explain why, Jipara, my personal contact, stopped me and said, “This is your home. You can stay as long as you need”, with the kind of loving compassion that almost had me crying. And they do all this absolutely for free. They offer you a room, teach you a practice that gives you mental tools that can make you stronger and help you for your entire life, feed you twice a day, give you access to some of the most majestic halls and meditation spaces you will ever see in your life, absolutely for free. It’s amazing. Since this place is run by donations, they invite you to leave one before you leave, which I absolutely encourage you to do: whatever you can, within your means, give as much as you feel is right. Absolutely magical place. I could write a whole book about my experience here, and perhaps one day I will, but for this review I’ll stop here. Highly recommended 👍🏻 🧘🏼‍♂️

Great international vipassana meditation retreat temple under teaching by Ajarn Tong. Teachers and office stuffs act with pure Dhamma, they are always welcoming to help your practice. I appreciated teachings I’ve received here. plus, food provided here is super, I look forward to meal time everyday. Would come back again.
Wang X — Google review
I initially planned to stay 5 days, but later I extended to 7 days, because I found that I gained improvement everyday and wanted to achieve more. Life here is both easy and tough. Wat Chom Tong provides individually clean kuti (with private bathroom) to meditators, ensuring we are able to do the meditation in our own rooms. Everything necessary for living are accessible within 10 mins walk, from snacks, foods, toiletries to cloths and medicines. The meals here are very nice too, while the breakfast is a bit heavy to me, the lunch always gives me surprises. I am so lucky to have Jirapa as my teacher, she is such a graceful and peaceful Nun, who patiently responded to my questions and troubles. Above all, the best part is my daily reporting to Prah Ajah, talking to him makes me refreshed every morning. And I progressed gradually under his instructions with patience and enouragements. Here comes the tough side, you must fight with hunger and long hours of practice. All in all, I looking forward to coming back someday and finish 21 days basic course.

Such a great experience to watch elephant show and having an elephant ride. They are so cute and they also showed the ability of painting. We purchased a T-shirt painted by an elephant. They also have open buffet lunch option in the facility as well as shops for drinks and souvenirs.

I visited this place thinking it was a “clinic” for elephants and a sanctuary for their care. Unfortunately, the experience was heartbreaking. The elephants are chained, and sticks are used to control them. You can see the sadness and depression in their eyes. This was not the ethical treatment I expected from a facility claiming to care for these beautiful animals. I truly hope they move towards a more humane and compassionate approach. 🥲
Haya A — Google review
The elephants are well taken care here and we got to visit the longneck community. We can feed, bath and watch the elephants performance. I'm really amazed by the elephants drawing and even writing skills especially by sudha.
Clarissa M — Google review
Partner and I came here thinking we were going to a no riding or bathing sanctuary, but our driver took us here and we were stuck with doing feeding and bathing. The entire time I felt wrong for being there. Don’t get me wrong the staff was polite to us, but it is so obvious they just want money. While being there the elephants are chained and swaying back and forth in distress. When it came to having to bathe them the guy kept yelling at the elephant and pulling at its ear when it wouldn’t come to us which made me sad. I even said it was fine but they insisted and recorded. While it was a unique experience, it just did not feel right and left crying because the animals look sad. Please do research, there is an ethical sanctuary not to far from this one that we wished we went to.
Emily M — Google review
A very beautiful and well-run elephant park with a clinic and excellent entertainment with these wonderful creatures. Food and drink are available, as are souvenir shops. It's worth arriving early. The animals are sweet and are all well-cared for, as is the entire park.

Horrible place. Seeing the elephants beaten, & chained to poles on concrete slabs. This is NOT a clinic or sanctuary. Real elephant sanctuaries care for the elephants in a natural habitat & don't allow people to ride them. This is a scummy tourist trap selling overpriced food & ornaments. The place was packed with bus loads of tourists. I refused to pay 1500 baht to see animal cruelty.
Mark P — Google review
Riding elephants are animal abuse. It's a disgusting practice that should be abolished and banned. Stay clear of this place as Chiang Mai has a ton of better, and more ethical elephant sanctuaries!
Sebastian L — Google review
My wife and I got the package that included everything in it the bamboo raft, the elephant show, the elephant ride, the ox cart ride and the buffet lunch. The staff were very nice, the buffet was good and we really had a wonderful time. It’s just the whole guiding them with a metal hook thing and riding an elephant thing kinda made me feel bad. I originally wanted to go to an elephant sanctuary where there was no riding or performances but when you book last minute you don’t have time to do the research.

We spent the afternoon at Thai Elephant Home and had the best time. We happened to have the tour all to ourselves, which made it even more special. The guides were so lovely—fun, kind, educated and really patient with my daughter, who was a bit nervous at first. Walking through the jungle was beautiful, and we had so much fun in the river with the elephants. You can tell they’re really well cared for and loved by their handlers. Such a memorable experience—highly recommend!

Best experience! There is no other experience that makes you feel that elephants are gentle animals. You can feel the elephant's skin, muscles, nose, eyes, everything directly. Please try this tour. Some people will criticize. However, criticism spoken from a safe distance without knowing anything has no value. Only those who have touched elephants directly, looked into their beautiful eyes, and even made a donation for elephants can speak about the pros and cons of this. I have done all of that. From my perspective, this is a very valuable place to understand elephants directly. I want many people to experience it. Then you can decide whether it is good or bad. If you are reading this, you are probably considering it. I wish you a wise experience.

Pha Chor canyon Is approximately an hour's drive from downtown Chiang Mai and is situated within the Mae Wang national park. Entrance for each foreigner is 100 baht plus 30 baht for a vehicle. There is a very modern, well designed walk when you get there, approximately 400 m there and 400 m return. There are steps, narrow pathways and a few awkward places where older visitors should take care. Views of the natural phenomena here are spectacular, and there is excellent signage in both Thai and English. Be sure to have a camera for the excellent views. And water to keep hydrated. There is ample parking at the beginning of the walk. Just view some of the many photographs to see what an interesting place it is here. There is a drinks shop at the main viewing area where there are some great views over the surrounding area. Very highly recommended for a visit.

Parking is available for cars and motorcycles. There are spacious and clean toilets too. Before hiking to the Pa Chor Geotectonic, you can get refreshments or snacks from here. Or stop by here to rest after the hike. We arrived at almost lunch time and the hike was a about 20mins, combination of downhill and uphill. It was hot even when there's plenty of shade. Pa Chor is beautiful though and the hike is interesting considering the plants/trees has existed for millions of years.

Kanta Elephant Sanctuary is a must-visit destination in Chiang Mai, where you can immerse yourself in the enchanting world of elephants. This sanctuary offers an intimate experience with these gentle giants, allowing visitors to feed and bathe them under the guidance of friendly and knowledgeable staff. The small group setting ensures that everyone gets ample time to interact with the elephants without feeling rushed.
Very good experience at Kanta elephant sanctuary. Guide tours were very good, shared a lot of facts about the elephants, how they are taken care of and general culture of the area. These elephants are domestic elephants who are used to be around humans, don’t expect to see them in the wild (as it is a sanctuary). Nevertheless I felt like the elephants were well taken care of, there’s 20 elephants in the sanctuary and 60 staff to take care of them (you will only see a few elephants at a a time). The sanctuary is well taken care of and it’s very big (5 acres). What to expect: hotel pick up from Chiang Mai, AC van to the sanctuary (about 1 h drive, bumpy roads), you get given a uniform to wear, intro with the guide, feeding and making food for them, bathing them is optional. They take pictures throughout the day and can be purchased at the end for a good price. It’s very well organised and it’s a wholesome experience. Highly recommended

We had an amazing experience at Kanta Elephant Sanctuary. The elephants are clearly very well cared for, and spending time with them was unforgettable — from feeding and bathing them to even helping give their medicine. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive throughout the visit. One important recommendation for visitors is to apply plenty of insect repellent. There are black flies in the area, and their bites can leave a small bleeding spot and sometimes cause swelling or other reactions. Aside from that, everything was truly spectacular. For the staff, I would suggest emphasizing the importance of using repellent during the initial briefing. It would also be helpful to remind visitors to bring a change of clothes and water shoes. I also recommend bringing cash if you want to purchase the photos — they’re absolutely worth it.

Visitors can spend an entire day engaging with these gentle giants by feeding them, bathing them in mud pools, and learning about their daily lives through guided tours.
Thank you for the amazing opportunity to meet such lovely elephants with genuine friendly personality. They look happy and after knowing about their difficult past, it's incredible how forgiving they are. I am so happy I had the pleasure of feeding, bathing, and playing with them. My son helped during last year 's rain season and invited me to come and see them. It was the best thing I experienced in Thailand.

Visiting Mae Rim Elephant Safari in Chiang Mai was one of the best experiences of our trip to Thailand. From the very beginning, the team made us feel welcome and cared for. The sanctuary provides a wonderful balance of learning, fun, and close interaction with the elephants, all while treating them with great respect. We started with an elephant walk through the forest trail, which was peaceful, scenic, and gave us the chance to observe the elephants in their natural environment. The feeding session was so much fun – the elephants were gentle, and it was incredible to connect with them up close. Bathing the elephants was another highlight – refreshing, playful, and something our kids will never forget. What really made the experience extra special was our guide, Dee. He was knowledgeable, engaging, and had such a great way of explaining everything. Dee made sure both adults and kids were fully involved, and his passion for elephants truly shone through. There were also fantastic activities for children, which made the day even more enjoyable for families. Our kids were entertained, educated, and left with memories they’ll cherish forever. Overall, Mae Rim Elephant Safari goes above and beyond. It’s not just a tourist attraction – it’s an ethical, hands-on experience that lets you truly appreciate these amazing animals. Highly recommended for families, nature lovers, and anyone visiting Chiang Mai! Thanks to @travellerscaffe India tour company to arrange same for us.

You get the chance to interact with the elephants in a responsible way—feeding, observing, and walking with them in a natural environment, with no riding or performances involved. Everything here revolves around the elephants’ well-being.

Maerim Elephant Sanctuary was amazing! We spent all day with elephants… the people who stayed with us were so kind…they take care of the animals and made us fell that we were at home. It was a beautiful and loving experience! We feel very grateful!

Fantastic experience! The staff are excellent, Mek was a brilliant guide and was very knowledgable about the elephants. We fed the elephants, had a mud bath with them and went in their pool to clean them. Beautiful sanctuary with a lovely pool to relax in at the end. Very relaxed and informal but very educational. Would highly reccomend for all ages. My 9 year old loved it and they were very good with him.

Such an amazing memories, I could never imagine being so close to observe an elephant. They are so precious and felt truly grateful for the amazing staffs at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary to rescue them. Also big thanks to Mek Mek and Tim for the great tour and knowledge about elephants!!!

A truly amazing experience. Opted for the full day tour, and SO glad we did. We were able to spend so much time with the elephants, nothing ever felt rushed. You get to spend time with them, feed them, bathe them, even do a short walk with them. Our guide, Tim, was the kindest, most informative guide! He brought such a good energy and was happy to answer all questions. The photographer, Bay, was also an absolute legend and I would highly recommend getting the photograph packages at the end. It was 800 baht (this varies depending on your group size) for digital copies of about 300 pictures! Definitely worth it. I could not recommend this tour more if I tried! You also get to relax at the end of the tour in a swimming pool, with the options for drinks too! Also - spent a lot of time researching the various sanctuaries in Chiang Mai, and this one ticked all the boxes! The way they operate is “elephant led”, let them do what they want and we will follow. Foraging was a small part of the tour, you chop down 2 banana leaf trees each and then carry them to the van. (Nothing to be phased by at all!) You also get given a change of clothes before you meet the elephants so don’t worry about getting mucky!

Sights & Landmarks
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a revered temple in Northern Thailand, is known for its gold stupa, pagodas, and museum. Perched on a mountainside, the temple offers stunning panoramic views of the city. To explore off-the-beaten-path routes in the region, consider hiring a local trekking guide through a reputable company. This allows access to non-touristic areas and an authentic experience.
Beautiful temple complex. You’ll need to climb up some steps but it isn’t too arduous of a journey up. Be prepared with an umbrella and good shoes that add the ground can be slippery if it’s been raining. The weather is cool up top so have a light rain jacket. You will have to take off your shoes to go inside the inner temple area but there is a place to store your shoes, I would just recommend bringing a small towel to wipe off your feet once you’re done. The view from the top is amazing as you can see the city. When we got there, the clouds were low and visibility was poor but it cleared up within 20-30 minutes while we explored the complex. So many aspects of this place are highly detailed with rich history. Would definitely recommend checking out! Note: if you have a tendency for carsicknesses, would recommend having something to take just in case on the way up and down as the roads are very winding but the drive isn’t too long.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is an absolute must-see in Chiang Mai! The journey up the mountain leads you to one of northern Thailand's most sacred and beautiful temples. Climbing the iconic Naga-flanked staircase is a memorable start, and your reward is the stunning, glittering golden chedi at the heart of the complex—it's truly magnificent. Beyond the architecture, the panoramic views of Chiang Mai city from the temple grounds are breathtaking, especially on a clear day. The entire site radiates a wonderful sense of peace and deep history. Don't miss this spiritual and visually rewarding experience!

Recently, I had the chance to visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, and it was truly a memorable experience. The temple is incredibly beautiful, with stunning architecture, peaceful surroundings, and a breathtaking view of Chiang Mai from the top. The atmosphere is calm and spiritual, making it a perfect place for reflection and relaxation. The climb up the stairs is worth every step once you reach the golden stupa glowing in the sunlight. The entire area is well-maintained, and the cultural significance of the temple makes the visit even more special. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Chiang Mai — a must-see landmark that captures the beauty and spirit of Thailand.

Doi Suthep is a mountain in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and the name of the sacred Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Buddhist temple located on its summit. Founded in 1383, the temple is one of northern Thailand's most important and revered religious sites, known for its golden chedi, impressive views of Chiang Mai city, and a 306-step staircase leading to its entrance. Visitors can either climb the steps or take a cable car, and the temple is open to visitors who dress respectfully, covering their shoulders and knees. Is a MUST visited places in chiang mai. The view is spectacular from mountains top to see the city.

The temple is beautiful. Along with tourists, many locals come here on pilgrimage. The panoramic view is stunning, and it’s definitely worth waking up early to enjoy the place in peace, as it has a very calming atmosphere. There is also a replica of the Emerald Buddha (the original is currently in Bangkok), since it was housed in this temple for a period of time.

We rented a motorbike and had a ball on the ride up. Climbing the stairs is challenging but take your time. Coming down be careful. Make sure as a visitor you pay to enter. We got a blessing from the monk. Beautiful views, amazing temple, well worth the stairs.

This Buddhist temple, built on a hill, is located near Chiang Mai city and can be reached by climbing a few stairs. You can reach here from the city by motorbike or taxi. The temple is very impressive and peaceful. From here, a beautiful view of Chiang Mai city is visible. Travelers coming to Chiang Mai should definitely visit here.
Prakashkumar J — Google review
Beautiful setting, amazing construction and example of the cultural heritage of Thailand. Remember that to enter the temple area you need to remove your shoes, and knees and shoulders should be covered according to the local customs. No need to book a tour, just turn up, and entry price is negligible, you can donate more if you like. Be prepared for a very long flight of steps to get to the top, so good mobility is required. And if you're not bothered about sharing a ride, get one of the little buses there and back - they go from/too multiple poinys and it's a big saving on a taxi or a Grab/Bolt.

Nestled in the foothills of the Doi Suthep Mountains, Chiang Mai Zoo is a sprawling 200-acre wildlife haven that's home to over 400 animal species. This family-friendly destination offers a diverse range of attractions, including a snow dome, panda exhibit, kids' water park, and animal feedings.
One of the best zoos I have visited as someone who has visited multiple zoos in the USA. It is very clean and scenic. The zoo is located at the base of a mountain so it has a very hilly/steep terrain making the tram service/golf carts mandatory. Some signage is translated to English, but not all. This left me with some questions about different animals but nothing had zero English signage. I don’t have children but zoo felt extremely family friendly and many other patrons were there with babies/small children. It seemed like they were making major expansions and adding new exhibits which will probably make it even better. There was also the opportunity to feed elephants, which was a pleasant surprise! The insane views from the mountainside of Chiang Mai further made the trip worth it.

Chiang Mai Zoo (including Tram & Aquarium) – Monsoon Season Notes Total cost for one adult: approx. 900 baht (zoo entry + aquarium + tram). They do the tourist tax and it's pretty significant. WALKING HAZARD (this is serious) Don't walk it if it's been raining. I'm someone who averages 12–20 km a day and I still slipped while cautiously walking and gripping onto the rails. The main problems: - Smooth sloped concrete paths with no grip - Algae buildup makes it worse than it looks - Water channels and grooves funnel rotting leaves and garbage right to the centre of the paths where you walk - Piles of rotting leaves just left there to compost - Several areas alternate between ramps and stairs without logic, some slopes are a dangerous angle even if you are wearing hiking shoes like myself. If you're even slightly unsteady on your feet, just take the tram. TRAM Recommended even if you're fit. It does a full loop and stops at all the major exhibits. You can hop off, take a look, and hop back on the next one. Saves time and knees. Trams constantly loop too, so you can just rest and wait for the next. They do thin out around closing time. AQUARIUM Worth the detour. You have to buy a zoo ticket first, but the aquarium is modern, well-kept, and nicely air-conditioned. Kids would enjoy it, and it's a good escape from the heat or humidity. GROUNDS The gardens and general landscaping are gorgeous, a massive credit to their groundskeepers.. It’s just let down by unsafe walking surfaces. ANIMALS Decent variety. But during rain, expect them to be hiding. Not really the zoo’s fault, just something to be aware of. SUMMARY Dry day: do the full walk if you're fit. Still watch your footing. Wet day: take the tram. Seriously. Do not try to do it all on foot unless you like skating involuntarily. It’s a solid zoo with some great highlights, but the path safety is a real problem.
Jacob J — Google review
Zoo has a nice layout, but needs a little more upkeep on paths and painting. The 350 entry fee is misleading; you'll end up spending closer to 900/adult if you do everything. A couple recent reviews said they only saw 4 animals. Clearly they don't know how to open their eyes. I skipped a couple areas and still saw 76 species. It is worth checking out if you are here for 2-3 weeks and have ran out of things to do.
Keith L — Google review
Read some other reviews before you go, they were very helpful. Here are some: 1) Tram is a must! or else you'll suffer and wish you took it from the beginning cause there are alot of walking and climbing. Tram has 13 points that he stops at, you can hop off at a point, walk a little around and then hop on again into the next one. Price for tram is 70 THB. There is golf cart (for 4 or 6 persons) as an other option. 2) there are alot of activities and each one need to pay for it, entry fee to the zoo at the beginning is a must and cost 350 THB for adult, then there is the tram or golf cart fee. there are snow area and Dino area which we passed and I think it doesn't worth it except if you have kids and they love that things, and there is the aquarium which we passed too and it costs 450 THB, and finally there is the penguin feedings which was expensive and we passed it too but luckily visiting the penguins room was free and we had a lot of fun time there and highly recommend it. 3) alot of animals are missing! Some other animals are in single numbers only! To name some: Panda, Orangutan, Rhino, crocodiles, Gibbons.
Samer R — Google review
View and environment are great but the area is too large so should rent a buggy car. However, a buggy car can't stop during the ride except specific parking area so you still gotta walk a little bit to see those animals. And sometimes, the area smell is not great. But overall, if you have time, my recommendation is to rent buggy for 2 or 3 hours, which cost 350 per hours when I go, so you can stop and relax and will be able to see all

We came here to see the panda and the red panda. When we first came into the park, it looked very deserted. We decided to not rent a tram or a golf cart because we didn’t realize the park had so many hills. We regretted that immediately. Pretty much this zoo is like a paid area for a good hike. There were hardly any animals out. The ones that were looked pretty sad and I kind of felt bad for actually coming here in the first place. We paid ฿350 for each adult ticket and I didn’t realize the lady handed me the tickets with the cash. I thought it was a receipt so when we tried to enter the park, I didn’t have a ticket and had to look around my money to try to find it. I wish they would give the tickets separately, so we can actually see them.
Brennah L — Google review
Very vast and huge area, rather low animal population. NO panda, no aquarium. I recommend using a cart to get around, as it goes up and down A LOT. It is s nice afternoon activity for 350 THB per adult. But don't expect too much.
Xanadu K — Google review
It covers a large area and since it's on the mountains, some places are little steep.Recommend taking a tram ride and visit all the stops.

Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan is a revered 14th-century Buddhist temple located in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is home to gold and copper Buddhas, ancient manuscripts, and intricate murals. The temple's main attraction is the Phra Phutta Sihing Buddha statue, which holds great cultural significance and is paraded through the city during the Songkran Festival.
Beautiful complex of temples situated at walking distance from the Chang Mai centre. It has some temples dedicated to monks as well as the classics Buddhist temple. I appreciate in particular the golden "stupas" situated at the back of the main temple. Worth a visit if you are around!

Highly recommend visiting this temple. Inside, there are a few shrines where you can take off your shoes and step inside to look around or worship the gods, which feels very spiritual. This is one of the best temples I’ve visited during my time in Chiang Mai.

A must visit place. I went here with my partner and it’s a really beautiful old temple. Specially during the sunset it shines beautifully! Every detail of the temple is just mesmerising. Evening prayers calms one down with monks chanting soothingly. As a foreigner you got to buy ticket but it’s worth the price

Wat Phra Singh is one of Chiang Mai's most important and beautiful temples, famous for its Lanna architecture and gleaming golden structures. I first went at 4 pm, but it was very crowded. I returned at 6:35 pm, and it was less crowded, offering a better view for photos. I was able to enter for free and enjoy a peaceful moment as night fell. Seeing it illuminated and almost deserted was an unexpected gift. Travel tip: If you want to explore the interior at your leisure, go during the day; but if you're looking for a more serene atmosphere without crowds, a visit at sunset is magical. Note that the entrance fee is 50 THB if you're going to see the large Buddha. Otherwise, you can enter normally. You can walk there; it's close to the city center.

What has impressed me that Thai Wat are a sanctuary of Nature: fishes gambol in ponds pigeons pick food squirrels surreptitiously climb the trees. Here in phras Singh thou not water pond but plenty of greenery in conversation with thai temple architecture. Only thing disturbing was the side road on which traffic plies creating pollution in air and and in ears. There is a school it seems and diesel fume emitting buses carry children home may be. Buddha in art is in thai style with flyers for kindness to all living Beings hung around the golden stupa. I think they call Stupa Chedi here. May be I am wrong. Chiang Mai old town seems like a Buddhist pilgrimage. Buddha Namah!

Wat Chedi Luang Varaviharn is a captivating temple complex nestled in the heart of Chiang Mai's Old City. This historical site features a partially crumbled chedi dating back to the 15th century, which stands as a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage. Visitors are drawn not only by its architectural grandeur but also by the pillar believed to offer protection to the city.
Absolutely breathtaking, especially at night! Wat Chedi Luang Varaviharn is one of the most beautiful temples I’ve ever visited. The golden details on the main viharn (chapel) shimmer under the evening lights, creating a magical and peaceful atmosphere. The craftsmanship of the carvings and decorations is simply stunning — every inch feels like a work of art. At night, the contrast between the softly lit golden temple and the ancient brick chedi behind it makes the whole complex feel timeless. You can quietly walk around, take in the history, and feel a deep sense of calm. Inside, the golden Buddha statues and ornate columns glow beautifully — it’s a serene and spiritual experience. If you’re in Chiang Mai, I highly recommend visiting after sunset. It’s quieter, cooler, and the temple looks absolutely mesmerizing under the night sky. A perfect spot for reflection, photography, and appreciating the beauty of Thai architecture and culture. 🌕✨

50 bht to get in. 100 bht to hire a sarong to cover knees. The ladies providing these are some of the rudest people I have ever come across in Thailand. They threw the sarong at me when I hired, when I took it back I put it down on the table to look for my return card, they started yelling at me in Thai and making furious hand motions trying to tell me to fold it up. I was completely dumb struck that this woman was having such a strong reaction but also, when I initially hired there was a massive pile just dumped on the desk so I’m not sure why I was being yelled at. I handed over the card, got my money back and got out of there as quickly as possible. Such a bad look for the northern thais who I have found to be the most welcoming friendliest people in Thailand as a whole besides this cranky young woman. Not to mention this attitude inside of a temple which is considered to be such a sacred place is really off putting! I wish I could rate the temples and service seperate however it was not a relaxing or spiritual experience being treated this way upon both arrival and departure of the temple. The rest of the temple experience was absolutely spectacular. I went at night so there were far less people and the whole place was lit up beautifully. There’s a lot to explore and doesn’t feel like you’re in the middle of the hustling bustling Chiang Mai. Definitely recommend. Maybe just take your own sarongs!

This is one of the most impressive and historically significant temple complexes in the city. The absolute highlight is the central chedi (stupa), a colossal structure that, even partially in ruins after an earthquake centuries ago, demonstrates the grandeur of the ancient Lanna kingdom. It's incredible to think that this structure once housed the famous Emerald Buddha. The complex is large and features other very beautiful and well-preserved halls, as well as housing the city pillar (Sao Inthakhin). It is a must-visit. For foreign tourists, entry to the complex costs 50 baht per person. Payment must be made in cash.

Lovely place. There is always something special about old plqces of worship and this one is no different. Its a great place to just sit and exisit. With the wanderings of people and monks, the ringing of gongs and periodic chanting from monks. I would recommend having a look. 800 years or sonof history. Small 50b entry fee.

This is really spotlight in Chiang Mai Old City. Giant architecture with primitive material, making it an ancient look. There are also several small temples around in this area which are worth visiting. The entrance ticket price is THB 50 for foreigners. In the morning you can wait outside to see monks collecting alms. The white wall background with giant trees will make spectacular pictures.

Located in the heart of Chiang Mai’s Old City, this is a truly magnificent temple steeped in history. ⛩️ Since I visited on a Sunday, the temple grounds were filled with young novice monks, creating a warm and peaceful atmosphere. The main hall and the entire complex are spacious, with a towering central chedi that dominates the site. Although parts of the elephant carvings were damaged—likely due to an earthquake long ago—the temple still conveys a deep sense of history and reverence. Within the grounds, there is also a beautiful golden reclining Buddha.✨ Gazing upon its serene expression brings a sense of calm and tranquility. In the evening, the temple becomes even more atmospheric, with the sound of monks chanting echoing through the grounds. The entrance fee is 50 Baht per person. If you’re visiting Chiang Mai, this temple is a must-see for those who wish to experience history, culture, and spiritual serenity all in one place.

Lots of temples and really cool to see the historic one where it’s showing its age! Part of the temple is still intact with the elephants and other parts are crumbling. One temple is male only, but everything else is open for everyone! 50 THB admission fee and a 100 THB deposit if you need to borrow covering.

Very beautiful inside the pillar with intricate artwork and informative displays. They maintained it well and it has integrity, respects it's traditions and not commercialized. However to enter the city pillar you must take off your shoes and the rule says that only men are allowed in.

Tha Phae Walking Street is a vibrant market in Chiang Mai that comes alive every Sunday afternoon until midnight. The area showcases local arts and crafts, offering a mix of traditional handicrafts and tourist souvenirs. As the evening sets in, the street becomes bustling with people enjoying the lively atmosphere filled with music from street buskers. Visitors can explore an array of products including handbags, t-shirts, postcards, and picture frames while also indulging in delicious Northern Thai street food.
A street full of life, best time to visit overnight of course, with plenty of vendors this is pretty much a street market as many in Thailand. A bunch of local tastes and apparel vendors we had a great time walking down there, unfortunately it was and apparently it’s always an overcrowded we had a card time tying to walk. The long time tho was worth and you should make this a mandatory stop during one of your free evening and night

Welcome to one of Thailand tourism's true travel icons ... Sunday nights come alive in this premier location for travellers headed to Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand, as the mega market opens up over, then dominates through, several blocks in town. It is quite the marathon (if one truly wants to explore the depth and breadth of these markets, as I did ...) and at the finishing line, I reckoned it was well worth the expiration, in doing so. Almost everything you can imagine being able to buy in a pop-up night market bazaar, is on sale here. Food glorious food, abounds. And whether you want something to go and or, would like to take a load off, to dine-in, you are well and truly looked after here. In addition to the amazing food and drink, there are awesome local arts, crafts and homewares, on sale, plus lots of curious people watching opportunities, too. I will be back ...

Visited the Phae Walking Street (Sunday Night Market) by Tha Phae Gate last Sunday. It’s open only on Sundays, 5:00–10:30 PM. Hundreds of stalls sell handicrafts, local art, clothing, silver jewelry and northern street food like khao soi and mango sticky rice. Go early (5–7 PM) to avoid peak crowds, wear comfy shoes, bring cash (some accept QR), keep valuables secure, and bargain politely. 😊 Remember everything can be bargained although try not to do so on fixed priced items with prices written. Walkable from the Old City, family-friendly, lively, and a Chiang Mai must-visit. Also smoking and alcohol is banned in the street.

Of course a must-see when visiting the majesric city of Chiang Mai! Very lively, beautiful square and always decorated nicely for the current events. Delicous breakfasts, lunch, dinner and dessert at every corner. Shops to buy anything you'd ever need, and tons of polite and good people, both locals and other tourists. The gate itself really shows you how old this city is, and they've taken well care of this landmark.

Wow, it was kind of an endless street with shops when the Sunday market was happening. Keep eating something so you don't get tired of exploring. The price was decent( comparatively less to Bankok) but you need to negotiate, without negotiation the price was very high. You can easily spend 2 - 3 hour along with dinner.

Night market only on Sundays! Lots of foods, snacks, drinks and arts and crafts vendors all along the Ratchadamnoen Road starts from Tha Phae Gate. Lots of vendors, lots of foods, lots of fun!! Also LOTS OF PEOPLE!! If you have little kids and elderly becareful because they’ll get lost in the maze of people. Vendors are mostly cheap but their arts and crafts are mostly cheaply manufactured. Lots of cheap souvenirs. Towards the middle of the walking street, there’s a lot of massaging chairs along the walk way. Pretty cheap for an hour of massage but I wouldn’t do it too often. Doesn’t seem too hygienic, people from everywhere lining up to get massages but if you look there’s no where for them to wash their hands either.

Tha Phae Gate is a decent spot to visit if you're exploring Chiang Mai. It’s a popular landmark with historical value, and there’s usually something going on around the area, like street performers or markets. It’s not overly exciting, but nice for a quick walk, some photos, and people-watching. Worth stopping by if you’re nearby, but not something to go out of your way for.

The gate is always full of people during day and night. I preferred to visit it during the night as local vendors come out and make the place more vibrant. This place is definitely a must visit. For ladies they do photoshoot with provided dresses. The guys doing it seemed to know what they are doing, no idea what they charged but if thats your thing then enjoy your photoshoot too!

historical place. there are many pigeons here, very beautiful to take pictures. around there will be people selling bird food and helping us take pictures (for a fee). and some young people ask us to support money for poor children, I don't know if this is legal but you should pay attention

One of the most iconic landmarks in Chiang Mai. It’s perfect place to start exploring the old city, surrounded by charming cafes, local shops and street performers. The atmosphere is lively during the day and even more magical at sunset.

The Phae Gates are a nice add to Chiang Mai but note there are a lot of birds! Very cool to see the bricks of the old gate. After you see it once, it’s just a gate to pass in between to get between old city square and the outside on the east side!

Ancient wall build by a king to protect chiang mai city from invaders. Now it is a most famous landmark in chiang mai. Grate location for a photo videos and at night small vendors are there to sel handmade goods

I visited Tha Phae Gate and absolutely loved the vibe—this iconic eastern entrance to Chiang Mai’s 13th-century walled city has been beautifully conserved and even rebuilt in the 1980s to echo its original grandeur. Walking through the gate, you feel part of centuries of history, as monks, traders, and diplomats once passed right where you stand. Today it’s a lively square surrounded by crumbling city walls, temples, cafés, street vendors, and occasional festivals like Loy Krathong, Songkran, and the colorful Sunday Walking Street . You can see Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, and grab amazing local food—think khao soi and sausage nearby . To get there from The Astra Sky River, I hopped in a Grab for about 60–80 baht (~$2 USD) and was there in 5–7 minutes—super easy and cheap. It’s the perfect spot to soak in history, grab a coffee, and explore the heart of Chiang Mai!

Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is a lively market in Thailand's northern capital, offering a wide array of experiences. The historic center is surrounded by monasteries and temples, with accommodations ranging from traditional homes to modern city hotels. The night bazaar, open from 18:00 to 22:30 daily, features an extensive collection of stalls and shops selling local crafts, souvenirs, street food, clothing, electronics and more.
A fun filled night bazaar that has food, games and cheap stuff to buy. Be ready to bargain, never take the first price. Best to bring cash as some vendors don’t prefer credit (costs them a %) My favorite was the potstickers or fried dumplings, however you may call them in your part of the world.
John F — Google review
What a fun experience. If you've ever done any night market you'll know what to expect here. Vendors, food, and music. It definitely was more tourist than locals, but the vibe was still high energy. The street food was delicious. I didn't do much shopping as I went solely for the immersion. There are a lot of people moving all over the place so if you have children, keep them close. As adults we got separated. A good time was definitely had.

Markets for days. One of the best in Thailand. Friendly vendors. Realistic prices, not pushy at all. Great experience. Food options were also delicious. Plenty of different stall instead of the same thing over and over. Give it a go. You won’t be disappointed.

I bought a high quality crocodile wallet that would be at least $150 anywhere else. At the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar I got it for 950TB - $29. Crazy… Also bought two zipperless pieces of luggage (carry-on and medium) for $42. My wife got Thai pants for all her friends in Florida for 100 TB - $3 US. Great deals nice people good value. Recommend
Steven N — Google review
Big market, not cheap (compared to another markets) but negociable prices. Spread over several streets and covered areas (in case of a rainy day), it is very crowded and the stalls are repetitive. There is an area of food stalls (cheap and tasty) and a seating center with benches with background music from a singer or recordings - music that is pleasant to the ear. Public toilet, disabled friendly fot 5 baht. There are nice "cabaret shows" free entrance but must order drinks not expensive, nice attraction for a few hours on the go.

We visited several night markets in Chiang Mai, and this one was definitely the best. Very huge. It has many offshoots spread across different buildings and streets, offering a huge variety of food and things to buy.
Kristen B — Google review
Many different kinds of food available. Some better than others. All very affordable. Muay Thai fights also happen here regularly. We went and saw an event and it was impressive and enjoyable. And, of course, affordable. Great! There are many stalls to buy souvenirs or clothing at. You can negotiate the price down at all of these stalls. They expect you to. I definitely recommend going here. A great way to spend an evening in Chiang Mai.

Very short walk from the sticky waterfalls. A religious place, so dress appropriately. The historic reason for the existence of the lake and the scientific reason for the seven coloured lake are mentioned clearly and explained well. The wooden log steps are usually slippery, so tread with caution.

Wat Chamthewi, which was constructed in the 13th century and located approximately 2 km from Lamphun's center, features an intricate pavilion and a multi-tiered chedi reminiscent of a pagoda. This temple is sometimes referred to as the 'topless chedi' due to its lack of gold covering. It was established by Queen Jamdevi, who was the first Queen Regnant of the Haripunchai Kingdom.
I was much taken by my all to brief visit to this temple complex. Always fascinating to see these ancient buddhist structures, the other thing that caught my eye was the amazing wooden house, check out the size of the supports. Wish I had more time today

Wat Phra That Haripunchai Woramahawihan is a breathtaking ancient Buddhist temple complex that captures the essence of Lamphun's rich history and culture. Legend has it that King Haripunchai established this sacred site in the 12th century, marking the spot where he discovered a revered Buddha statue. The main structure stands on what was once the king’s headquarters, showcasing stunning architecture adorned with intricate statues and art.
This is one of major temples in northern of Thailand. The pagoda is the most famous in the temple. It is known as the pagoda of rooster zodiac of East Asian. All visitors must wear proper attires which cover legs and shoulders. Women in shorts may cover with provided robes.

If you are interested in Thai history, it is a place to visit. It is close to the museum, so I recommend you to go to the museum first and visit it after understanding the history. It is a beautiful temple that contains the history of the queen who created a city-state.

This is the largest temple in Lamphun city. You can buy offerings next to the ticket booth. Devotees walk in a clockwise manner thrice to ask for blessings. There is a shop selling drinks in the temple grounds. If you are hungry, you can head to a famous longan noodle shop just across the bridge, within 5 minutes.

I went here during the Lamphun Lantern festival. The color of the lantern depends of the day you were born, so make sure to know that. Lamphun City isn’t too far from Chiang Mai, about 25 minutes by car. It is another temple you should visit. It is a beautiful place that isn’t too far. Must see!

Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is a magnificent temple located in the heart of Lamphun, Northern Thailand. Steeped in history and spiritual significance, this ancient temple is one of the most revered landmarks in the region and a must-visit for both cultural enthusiasts and spiritual seekers. Dating back to the 11th century, the temple was originally built during the reign of King Athitayarat of the Hariphunchai Kingdom, which predates the Lanna Kingdom. Its most iconic feature is the golden chedi (stupa), believed to enshrine a relic of the Lord Buddha. The chedi gleams brightly under the sun and serves as a symbol of Lamphun's rich heritage. The temple grounds are serene and beautifully maintained, featuring a blend of Lanna and Hariphunchai architectural styles. Visitors can admire intricate carvings, traditional murals, and ancient structures that tell the story of a once-flourishing kingdom. The atmosphere is peaceful, making it an ideal place for quiet reflection and prayer. Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is also an important pilgrimage site, especially for those born in the Year of the Rooster, as it is considered their zodiac temple. The temple hosts several important Buddhist festivals throughout the year, attracting both locals and tourists. In summary, Wat Phra That Hariphunchai is more than just a religious site—it is a living testament to Thailand’s deep-rooted history, artistry, and devotion. Whether you're a history buff, a cultural traveler, or someone seeking spiritual insight, a visit to this temple offers a memorable and enriching experience.

Tweechol Botanical Garden is a vast 114-acre landscape located in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It features a diverse array of flora, including 107 varieties of palm trees, succulents, bromeliads, orchids, and tropical flowers. Visitors can enjoy activities such as walking, horse riding, boating on the lake, and exploring a petting zoo. The garden also boasts an artificial waterfall and animal-shaped hedges.
This is an absolutely beautiful tropical garden with a nice little zoo. Most of the animals there have been rescued from other facilities and there are signs up that explain this. The garden itself is massive and highly recommend the bikes to get around and see everything. There was hardly anyone there, and just hearing the birds singing and the smell of flowers and herbs in the air was a nice break from the city. I thought it was excellent value (about 250 thb for entry and a bike) . Nice friendly staff too. Loved it!

What an amazing property! So much thought & care went into the design. The garden is beautiful and ever changing around each bend. I highly recommend planning an entire afternoon. Beautiful water features, romantic archways & lots of great suprises along the way. The museum was the perfect touch to end a very long walk!

A very enjoyable visit to the gardens today!! The staff were really helpful. Special thanks to Aof for his assistance!!! I would allow 2-3 hours if you’re walking. Bike is faster. Also, try not to come in the middle of the day as it’s too warm. Before or after noon there is plenty of shade. Just not midday.

I love this botanical garden! While we were there, there were almost no other people except for stuff and it felt serene and peaceful 😌 There are many different areas to take pictures and to look at amazing flowers and trees. Zoo is quite small and cages are not big, that’s the only downside and why I took one star off. Even though it’s written on different plates that those animals are rescues, they still live not their best life, sadly.
Mi M — Google review
Odd experience. Paid and were told to wait for the golf cart. Driven around the whole complex with absolutely no stops or commentary straight back to ticket office. 15 minute drive for 89 baht each. We then walked back to the little topiary garden and museum where a woman barked at us to ‘remove shoes’ and ‘no photos’. First experience of a non-chill Thai operator. We then saw a little of the gardens before the deluge of rain hit. So I assume we missed a lot of the best parts. Extra cost for animal feeding - Animals were in very small cages. Entry costs done on height not age. Clean toilets and cafe on site.

Wow! Such an amazing place to enjoy the good weather, to walk and explore the beautiful garden. This place is so much more than just a beautiful garden and it full of small and cute activities such like a maze, rock garden, tree house, bush sculptures, farm animals, swing, feeding stations-pay attention to this and ask about the food that you can give to the animals at the entrance, when you buy the tickets. there you can buy food and then feed the animals at the different stations, there is food for fish and for farm animals. The place is very suitable for kids. We were at the garden on Saturday morning and it was pretty empty. Moreover, when you enter the garden you can choose to rent a bicycle or a tram ride (which is free and you can take it along different stations in the garden). We walked by foot, it took us 3 hours to finish everything. The walk was easy and fun :) Pay attention to get enough water at the entrance (you can buy there), there is no places to get water inside. And there are plenty of bathrooms inside the garden. We sure we will come to visit again 🤗 Hope you will enjoy your visit there as much as we did🙏🏻

Alpine Golf Resort Chiangmai is an upscale resort featuring premium rooms, suites, a posh spa, and a Ron Garl-designed golf course. Located 45 minutes away from Hangdong area near the airport, this challenging mountain course offers a fantastic atmosphere and view. The well-maintained clubhouse is very clean and comfortable, while the course itself features 36 holes in good shape. Although some fairways may be dry due to lack of rain, most are perfect with ample watering.
บรรยากาศสงบมาก ๆ น่าไป Very beautiful course and accommodation. Rooms are clean and well-kept. The course is well maintained and greens are somewhat challenging. There are 27 holes here. Perfect for a couple of days of golf. However there is nothing else around and there is only one restaurant. If you are planning to go downtown to the city center, it is not recommended.

Hotel facilities are nice with pool, gym and breakfast, but the staff were not honest in rates for the rooms. The rates given at check out were higher than quoted and did not match website rates. Disappointed with the interaction with the staff upon checkout.

The golf course is nice. It is remote and there is definitely some price gouging to be ready for. Definitely not worth the experience of a day trip from Chiang Mai.
Chris M — Google review
A golf course 30 km from Chiang Mai, this golf course is situated next to a majestic mountain as the view. The hotel room was nice and clean, with basic hotel amenities. The 2 downsides of the hotel here is that: 1. The hotel breakfast was not really delicious. 2. Location was quite deep in the woods and 30 km from Chiang Mai city. There are not many restaurants around this location that the golf course is situated in, but I would highly recommend KOI Lakeview Restaurant (not sponsored) for the restaurant near this golf course. Food was absolutely delicious! For golf, it included both a golf driving range and a 27 hole golf course.
Pudis R — Google review

Did not stay at the hotel but played three rounds in mid-Jan. One of the two very best courses in Chiangmai (the other was Highland). Great layouts and condition but way way overbooked during peak season, took avg 4.3hrs to play. During one round, there was fivesome in front us which took over 2.5hr to play 9 holes.. we passed them after front nine and by the time we finished 18, there were 2 holes empty behind us!!! (Par 4 and par 5 holes). They really should not allow fivesome during peak season.

San Kamphaeng Hot Springs is a popular attraction located just a short drive away from the resort. For a modest fee, visitors can explore the beautiful gardens and enjoy the steaming pools and rivulets of the spa. The hot springs offer therapeutic waters where visitors can relax, soak their feet, or even boil eggs in the warm water. The site features various pools for swimming, private bath houses for families or couples, and camping facilities.
Lovely hot spring I use this hot spring to break up my road trip. It been hectic up to that point. It is half an hour out of town and 15mins to Mae Khampong. Has foods, hot spring soaks, massage service, playground and picnic area. I would not come here as the end destination but it is a lovely way to spend an hour or 2 chillaxing.
Nisit P — Google review
The third annual Light Festival at San Kamphaeng Hot Springs offers a modest but charming display, though it comes with some drawbacks. The main illuminated installations are visually appealing but limited to just a few key spots, which might leave visitors wanting more. The paths between displays are dimly lit and, in some areas, wet and uneven, so bringing a flashlight is a must for safety.Food options are disappointingly sparse, with only a handful of stalls, limiting choices for attendees. Navigation is another issue—there’s a lack of clear signage directing visitors to the event entrance, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the mandatory 40-baht parking fee feels steep, especially considering the rough, dark walk from the parking area to the festival grounds, where extra caution is needed due to the uneven terrain.Overall, while the festival has potential, improvements in lighting, signage, food variety, and parking logistics would make it a more enjoyable experience. For now, it’s a decent outing if you’re prepared, but it falls short of being a must-visit event.

There is differential pricing for foreigners and Thais in relation to the entry fee (100B/40B) and 1-hour massage (250B/180B). But the private hot spring room is 65B/person regardless of nationality. You can choose your experience and pay accordingly. The grounds are expansive so you can spend hours here. The open air foot massage was outstanding. Some of the facilities, like the private hot spring rooms, could use a facelift.
Deborah L — Google review
Packs of dogs fighting everywhere. The map is confusing. The place is not signposted and there are no friendly people around to ask. As foreigners we felt like we were out of place and being given strange looks. The fact that the eggs are cooked in the main spring really put us off. The whole place was not well maintained. The toilets were not good at all. The smell of rotten egg was everywhere. It was overpowering and sickening to the point where we felt like we could not breath. I would not recommend this place to tourists at all. Find a hot spring that does not allow people to cook in the same water people are going to be bathing in.
Julz P — Google review
The mineral pool is nice and it’s not super expensive, it does feel a bit wrong that you pay to get in and then pay for everything, even the mineral pool which I feel is why everyone comes so no need to charge separately, it would feel better to incorporate that into the entry fee. It also feels like a bit of an abandoned place with some areas really not being very nice
Ben H — Google review
Interesting, for a brief visit, if only to see the evidence of volcanic activity . The main attraction is egg boiling, and soaking legs and feet in the hot water. There is a swimming pool and play area for children, and food and drink for sale.

Nestled in the lush forest of Mae Kampong, the Mae Kampong Waterfall is a must-see natural wonder. A short hike from the main village leads to this majestic waterfall, which cascades down seven rocky steps, offering stunning views and ample photo opportunities. The walk to the waterfall is relatively short but uphill, requiring some effort, but the reward is well worth it.
The waterfall is walkable from Mae Kampong village🚶 I hiked all the way to the top viewpoint, and it was totally worth the hike! The trail isn't too tough, short hike very nice👍🏻 I went in early March, just as the low season was starting, so it wasn't crowded ✅Bring some water (please keep it clean – there are bins at the entrance)🗑️

Well worth the drive even though the road does become very narrow and the usual car that has its emergency blinkers on to justify parking the car in a way to block the lane. Plenty on good restaurants on the way and hanging over the river.

There is a good trail going up along the cascades. It is well maintained with railings. If you walk all the way up, you will see many levels of the waterfall and find some swimming holes. There is no fee. You can pay 20B for a two-row pick-up truck to take you from town to the trail head rather than walking up the whole way.

Love this little waterfall. Easy walk from Rabiang Dao cafe. Short steep hike. Took me 20mins return trip. There is an alternate path you can use to return to carpark. Definitely go if you are in Mae Khampong

The atmosphere is pure and nature is abundant. Along the way, you will hear the sound of the waterfall flowing all the time. The air is fresh and quiet. There is clear water. There are ferns and moss everywhere. Around the waterfall, there are various trees and rocks. The view is beautiful.

Great little hike, I’d say easy to moderate from the bottom to the top of the waterfall. It’s very close to a small village with great food and drink. Highly recommended. Beat to go early as parking is limited.

Though it's not the most beautiful waterfall, but it is still very cool and fresh at that place. One of the good places to spend time with the nature here. You have to walk on a long steep road before reaching the waterfall. There were some shops along the road selling food, drinks and souvenirs. Visited in February 2023

Many levels of waterfalls. The higher the better and more beautiful.
