Wells Gray Park Visitor Information Centre

Tourist information center
Nature & Parks
The Wells Gray Park Visitor Information Centre is a welcoming place located at the entrance of Wells Gray Provincial Park. Visitors can find helpful information about hiking trails, such as the Moul Falls trail, and get recommendations for their outdoor adventures. The center offers facilities like washrooms, a gift shop, and an interpretative area. It also provides parking and picnic areas for visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Wells Gray Provincial Park is stunning. To see one of the waterfalls on a day trip would be a treat but to see so many was great. The power of the water is awesome. We did a hike from Baileys Chute and there quite a few bugs, e.g. small mosquitos so you need plenty of bug spray. Definitely recommend Wells Gray Park

This is the perfect place to start if you're visiting Wells Gray Provincial Park. You’ll get all the info you need, and the staff are super friendly and helpful with maps and tips on what to see and do. There’s also a cute little souvenir shop, clean washrooms, and even a food truck outside. This spot really helps make your trip easier and more fun.
Meenaloshini K — Google review
Really nice visitor centre! The staff were friendly and helpful, and there was lots of info about the park. They had maps, souvenirs, and even a little shop. Beautiful spot, and there was a food stand just outside too!
Seyed R — Google review
Stopped at Wells Grey Provincial Park to stretch our legs on route to Jasper National Park - and it really is worth the stop! The visitor centre is an excellent place to start, with lots of information on the different things to see and do, we could easily plan our visit and decide what we had time to see. Plus there is a coffee van parked right outside… perfect! :) The park itself is beautiful, well kept and signposted and without the crowded of the National Parks. Highly recommend a visit here!
Tom O — Google review
At the Wells Gray Park Visitor Information Center, I saw something, I have never seen before at any other park service, including National Parks. They had a tip jar on their counter. ....your job is to provide information and customer service. You get paid or volunteer to do so. The tipping mindset of places that aren't restaurants serving you food at a table is becoming too much and honestly ridiculous. The place does have merchandise, ice cream, and coffee to purchase.
Nomad L — Google review
A Truly Exceptional Experience – Wells Gray Info Centre Over the years, my wife and I have visited countless visitor centres, and more often than not, they’re exactly what you’d expect: basic information, a few brochures, and a staff member who’s likely answered the same handful of questions a thousand times before. But the Wells Gray Information Centre was something else entirely. What set it apart was Hailey. From the moment we walked in, she went above and beyond to help us create an unforgettable experience in Clearwater and the surrounding area. Her knowledge was incredible — not just the popular highlights, but also the hidden gems that only a true local would know. Every recommendation felt personal, thoughtful, and spot-on. She also pointed us toward Liquid Lifestyles, located just at the end of the parking lot — and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our entire trip. In a time when genuine customer service can feel like a thing of the past, Hailey reminded us how impactful it is when someone truly cares about what they do. Her energy, enthusiasm, and insight turned what could’ve been a quick stop into one of the best parts of our vacation. Thank you for making our trip so special. If more people brought this level of care to their work, the world would be a better place.

Helmcken Falls

Waterfalls
Helmcken Falls, the fourth highest waterfall in Canada, is a majestic natural wonder located in Wells Gray Provincial Park, British Columbia. The falls drop 141 meters into a canyon and are fed by the Murtle River. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views from a well-maintained viewing platform or take an 8km round trip hike along the Helmcken Falls Rim Trail for a closer look.
The area from the car park to the waterfalls has benches and open space. We had lunch and let our kittens run around for a bit! The platform has been expanded to a larger platform and has great views of the falls! The Cone at the bottom was still in great shape but has some brown bits - went around 2pm on a weekend and was not busy at all

Very accessible. They have parkinf for car & RV/ campers. Toilets re available everywhere. This waterfall is gorgeous & amazing. A must to visit & trekking there. U can trekking further to the end of the trail. Really nice view & less tourists.
Viết V — Google review
Helmcken Falls offers a stunning view with its dramatic drop into a deep canyon. The viewpoint is just a short, flat walk from the parking lot, making it easily accessible for all visitors. There are restroom facilities near the lot, and the viewing platform gives clear, wide views of the falls and surrounding cliffs. On a good day, the mist rising from the base adds to the atmosphere. If you're anywhere near Clearwater, it’s definitely worth pulling over for.
San R — Google review
Beautiful waterfall surrounded by rock formations formed due to volcano, been here multiple times during winter and during spring and the waterfall always surprises with its views. Must visit if driving to Jasper/mount Robson/clearwater if driving along hwy-5 and there is lots of camp sites / RV sites and Cabins available in and around hwy-5.

Very spectacular waterfall!!! We went in late July and the fall was still pretty awesome!! We arrived VERY early in the morning around 6am, we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.

Kumsheen Rafting Resort

Resort for rafting, rock climbing & mountain biking, plus basic lodging in teepees & cabins.
Awesome stay at Kumsheen and so much fun doing the Devil’s Gorge half day paddle trip! The property is a great set up for couples (us), families, or groups of friends. Lots of different activities, beautiful views, and good amenities on site. We stayed in one of the canvas cabins, and it was comfortable and clean, bed was good too! The train being adjacent didn’t bug as at all, if anything it was actually a fun touch. Rafting with Ally was unreal! We had a great time, she was so knowledgeable and personable. Would recommend staying here and rafting to anyone. What an awesome time.
Riely R — Google review
Went on the devil's gorge half day rafting experience with jasmine this week. Had a super awesome time out on the river. The team did a great job of pitching the trip right so my daughter felt comfortable even though she was nervous. The guys had some great stories to tell during the experience and we saw a host of wildlife to boot. Also, full credit for providing a delicious vegetarian option for lunch! Altogether this was a great experience and I would recommend them to anyone. Thanks guys
Sam J — Google review
Hit the river with Trey over the weekend. Power rafting was so much fun. Trey was knowledgeable about the area, and made the whole day fun for our baseball team! We stayed at Shaw Springs campground, so we could be a little louder and not disrupt the resort guests. Appreciate the flush toilet at the campground. Thanks to Trey for a great experience! Will definitely be back!
Cheryl L — Google review
Stayed in RV camp site, basic flat gravel pad with 30amp service. Views of canyon are spectacular from the camp area. Rafting was fantastic, well above my expectations. Our guide Elliott was very knowledgeable and his skill set made you feel confident you were safe in his hands going down the rapids. Also learning about the history of the river was great in the calmer sections. The midway lunch was also delicious. Overall had great time as a family and would recommend to anybody looking for an outdoor adventure from a safety minded operation.
Scott M — Google review
We had an incredible experience with Elliot as our rafting guide! He was encouraging, informative, and made us feel super safe while letting us have a ton of fun. We did a full day raft in a group of 10, with one other person joining us in our raft, and we all had a blast together. The food at lunch was delicious, the hot tub after the raft was relaxing, and each member of the staff was welcoming and added to the fun of the day. We just did a day trip out from Vancouver, but I’m excited to come back and would love to stay overnight at the resort. 10/10!
Makaela P — Google review
What an excellent experience! My group survived the full day power rafting tour. Our guide Hannah was awesome. Our river cowgirl! Lunch was very good and the evening live music entertainment was a nice addition. I would highly recommend this adventure!
Krista C — Google review
I invited my girlfriend for her first time on the spectacular Thompson rapids. We had a great experience and so much fun. It was for us a perfect day activity coming from the Similkameen valley. Thank you so much to our great guide and to the Kumsheen rafting resort staff.
Victor G — Google review
My family and I planned a day of rafting and it was so much fun! We felt well supported, were coached appropriately about safety and allowed to experience a lot of adventure. The guides were very personable (we got to enjoy Jas and Mary) and had lots of stories and local history to share. Lunch was delicious. We did not stay at the resort. The scenery is spectacular and we had many sightings of bighorn sheep on the slopes of the canyon.

Historic Hat Creek Ranch

Mentioned on
3 lists
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Hat Creek Ranch is a living museum situated on the original Cariboo Wagon Roads, with buildings dating back to 1860. It's located on Highway 99 by the Highway 97 intersection, about an hour west of Kamloops. Visitors can enjoy American breakfast and lunch at the rustic restaurant and participate in educational programs. The site offers a historical walk and interpretive tour, allowing guests to learn about the area's history.
We feel so fortunate to have discovered this wonderful place on our way to 100 Mile House. It is truly a great spot, with friendly and very polite staff, and everything was impeccably clean and beautifully maintained. We especially loved the historic charm of the ranch. There a lot of animals that kids will fall in love. Surprisingly, it seems that not many people know about this gem, but it definitely deserves to be visited. We rented a cabin for the night and enjoyed a fantastic breakfast at the restaurant the next morning. A big thank you to Annet for her warm and gracious hosting, and to the chef for preparing such generous and delicious meals. The combination of price and size is a pleasant surprise. We highly recommend this lovely place to anyone passing through!
Nataliya K — Google review
We stopped here on our way home from a 6 day road trip through BC and some of Alberta yesterday. It was hot 40 degrees but the site is incredible. It's clean. The blacksmith was wonderful--explaining what he was working on and explaining the process. The restaurant was amazing which was an air conditioned space with a spacious patio overlooking the property. The waiter who served us was polite and attentive. I wish i had gotten his name, but i think he was fairly new--but just had a great vibe. The girl who sold us our tickets, was super polite and explained the map and where to go and what to see. The restaurant is open 7-7 and you don't need to buy tickets to the site to stop and eat. I want to highlight something i thought was important--their animals are well taken care of and their well being is put beyond all else. Normally this place offers carriage rides, and i thought i had arrived early enough i might be able to get one, but as we approached the stage coach office, the handler apologized and explained there would be no more today--it was too hot for the horses. I wasn't even disappointed but happy to see their wellbeing is put ahead of making a buck. All animals had ample water and shaded areas--just not roasting in field in the 40+ degree heat. Well done Hat Creek Ranch we will definitely stop for some eats next time we are driving through.
Shannon C — Google review
I absolutely loved my stay at this place. I have raved about it to my friends and family! The cabins were beautiful as well as the shacks! If you camp in a tent the miner shack should be basically the same if not a step up! I genuinely would recommend this to families, couples, even singles if you are looking for a weekend getaway! The restaurant is fair priced, and the neighbours were extremely friendly! It didn’t get loud at night time, and there was tons of wild life and live stock to see around the area! 1000/10 would recommend the miners shack if you aren’t looking for a glam get away, but just a basic camping experience with a bit of a twist this is definitely the place for you and your family! It was also EXTREMELY fair priced! There isn’t much to do around the area but the actual stay on the ranch itself was wonderful and exceeded my expectations! *we brought all the stuff you see in on the inside photos of the shack! (Battery operated lights, air mattress etc..)

A very interesting place to visit! The historic buildings with Indigenous history make it a perfect spot to learn more about Canadian heritage. The restaurant has delicious food and great service, and the whole site is well maintained. Definitely worth stop by!
Joel S — Google review
We had a fabulous experience! The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The forecast turned and a rainy night was predicted. As we were tenting they offered us an upgrade to the Miners Shack. We are so very grateful, especially as we listened to the pouring rain throughout the night.
Anita H — Google review
Historic Hat Creek Ranch is a quirky, worthwhile stop if you're road-tripping through the Cariboo. The site blends Indigenous history with Gold Rush-era settler stories, and the guided tours do a decent job of showing both sides. The original roadhouse is well-preserved, and the wagon rides add a fun touch for families. The Indigenous Interpretation Site is thoughtful, though it deserves more space and attention. Downsides? It can feel a bit commercial—some areas lean more toward touristy than educational. Food options are limited, and the gift shop is hit-or-miss. Still, it’s a unique place to stretch your legs, learn something, and connect with BC’s layered past.
Zhang L — Google review
Our group decided to stop in on our way northbound, we saw the signs and stopped for breakfast, we had a fairly large group, three families travelling together. Once we were greeted and sat our server politely notified us that due to the large group and having one server and cook on shift the wait might be an extra few minutes, which is no big deal we’re quite used to that now with our group. But I will say, the food was excellent, it didn’t take extra time at all, (so it seems) and the presentation was beautiful for every dish, even better so, it was delicious and the portion sizes were amazing for the price. We highly recommend stopping in to the restaurant to eat and experience the friendly staff, our server Anett was more than accommodating, very friendly and on the ball!! Excellent in talking and handling the childeren we had with us Good service Anett! We didn't get a chance to catch the name of the chef that cooked for us, only that he was part of the local indigenous band, and happy to cook for us. To you sir, thank you for a lovely meal! We’ll be talking about this place on the rest of our trip home, thanks to the hat creek ranch staff

The ever-changing fresh and locally sourced meals are creatively crafted by Chef David Schuk, who brings 25 years of culinary experience to the table. This winery was amazing! We tasted five different wines, picked our favorite to buy, and then enjoyed a glass of it while taking in the view of the vineyards. The staff were super friendly and greeted us with warm smiles!

Fort Berens winery has to be visited to enjoy the experience of having a detailed wine experience from friendly and informative staff in either the main tasting room, lounge area, informative tour or scenic outside seating area. Easy to access for wheelchairs, children's play area and gorgeous views. A must Lillooet destination stop.

Beautiful place to stop and taste wine, would definitely recommend sitting on the patio and enjoying a glass. The view really helps to feel the vibes, energy and flavors of the wine come to the palate. Excited to see how the wine I bought will taste.
Coolman11013 — Google review
Out of the six to ten wineries that we’ve been to, this has got to be our favorite 💛 The wine tasting itself is amazing, we get to enjoy wine while looking over the gorgeous mountain in an air conditioned room. Can you think of a better combination? I’ll wait 😉💛 The stunning view, the clean and modern design, the gorgeous patio that has a cover so my pale boyfriend doesn’t burn (😛), the kind, knowledgeable people who work here (Shoutout to Jeremy and the other person whose name we forgot to grab- dynamic duo!!). If you don’t stop by here when you’re in Lillooet, then I’d say you haven’t visited Lillooet at all 🤭 Edit: We couldn’t resist and came back to Lillooett two months later…🫣 Our second visit to Fort Berens absolutely lived up to the hype we built up in our heads the first time. Glad to report that the rose coloured glasses came off and it’s just as amazing and magical ;) Happy to see Jeremy again, thanks for taking such good care of us as always!

After a long and scenic drive, we treated ourselves to a visit at this beautiful winery, and it was absolutely worth it. The setting is stunning, with a peaceful patio overlooking the landscape, making it the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the sounds of nature. We sampled all the wines on offer and ended up settling in with a bottle of their crisp, refreshing rosé paired with a charcuterie board - a perfect combination. The wines were lovely across the board. We also picked up a bottle of their super dry and delicious cider to enjoy later at our final destination for the evening. Make sure to ask about them too! A great bonus: your tasting fee is waived with the purchase of two bottles. Friendly staff, great wine, and a gorgeous view make this spot definitely worth the stop if you’re in the area. Cheers!
Wendy D — Google review
Beautiful stopping off point to do a wine tasting and enjoy the views. Jeremy was so friendly & knowledgeable about the wines - and we really enjoyed our tasting. If you buy two bottles of wine- the tasting is free. The price on the bottles start at an affordable 19$!

An absolute must see if traveling through Lillooet. Even more so, get in touch with them ahead of time to try to set up a tour/tasting. Tammy gave the tour, and my goodness, she is passionate and knowledgeable and made the tour and tasting even better.

We had such a wonderful experience at Fort Berens Winery! The wines were absolutely delicious, each with its own character and depth. The staff were warm, welcoming, and made the tasting so enjoyable. A real highlight was getting the chance to chat with their incredibly knowledgeable winemaker, who generously took time out of his busy schedule to share insights with us. It made the visit feel extra special. Highly recommend visiting if you love great wine and genuine hospitality!

Barkerville Historic Town & Park

Concerts & Shows
Barkerville Historic Town & Park is a captivating living museum that transports visitors back to the Gold Rush era. Established in 1858 after gold was discovered in the Fraser River, this vibrant town quickly blossomed into a bustling hub of activity, thanks to Billy Barker's remarkable find at Williams Creek.
Was a great time! Last time I visited I was 13 years old and I was fortunate enough to take my 13 year old son there. It was great to share a childhood memory with my own child! Barkerville is an interesting trip that is fun and informative. The bakery is a must stop and take the walk up to Richfield courthouse. A visit here is a step back in time and well worth the drive.
Shereen Z — Google review
Had an excellent time. It had been years since I was here. The volunteers who work here are amazing. Please be kind to them. The bakery is definitely worth a visit. Very tasty treats. Plan to attend some of the shows, the characters are good and it's fun for all ages. I think I appreciate it more as an adult but definitely great for kids. You can easily spend a few hours here. Check out the blacksmith and get yourself a steak turner. They were very popular when we visited. (They have left and right handed ones). Fun fact, you can also book a stay at Barkerville and stay in their hotel or cabin. It's private and the interior is not available for viewing to the general public.
Nicole P — Google review
We had an amazing full day at Barkerville! It is truly a very well done historic town, larger than I expected with many many things to see. We enjoyed an incredible guided tour that was performed by one of the actors of Barkerville. I can highly recommend the little bakery in town with sweet and savoury treats and attending the theatre show at 2pm that was a wonderful interactive experience. Having been there I would happily visit again!
Lisa B — Google review
I had a wonderful experience going back in time to relive a historical event. The staff was friendly and engaging, staying in character throughout the day. We arrived at 9 am, but next time, I would aim for 9:30 or 9:45 am since everything doesn’t open and start until 10 am. The facility was clean and well-maintained. This was a family adventure, and our kids really enjoyed themselves. Keep in mind that it can get pricey if you decide to purchase everything, so be prepared for that.
Regan F — Google review
A great historic experience. Barkerville is a delight to walkthrough and explore, the actors are great at what they do, and are a delight to communicate with. There's plenty of things to buy and eat, to immerse yourself further. Me and my wife went there on a Saturday and got a special treat of hiking with a guide (acting as an actual historic figure of the era) to Jack town, the immersion in history and culture of the time period is on point and maintained with a lot of care respect
Sviet S — Google review
Had the best time here with my 6 year old and some family friends! We did 2 days. The first day we arrived after 4pm, so we just walked the streets and looked at everything. Some stores were still open, but things start to quiet down at this time. We came back the next day at 10. My son enjoyed the 1030 school house presentation and we booked tickets for the horse carriage ride, which you should do ASAP as they book up. We hit the bakery, which had the BEST Boston cream donuts and pistachio Macrons! The Strauss Co coffee shop had fantastic coffee, and for $8 you buy a tin cup, they personalized it with name and date, and you get free refills all day! The coffee was really tasty. We enjoyed looking at each exhibit and really enjoyed all of the characters acting as well. The Pickwick assembly was hilarious and historically founded. I would suggest getting a schedule at the welcome centre and following the paid actors around as they act out historical scenes. We got to learn all about how water wheels were used to dredge the river and there was a big drum circle at 5. Highly recommend sitting for a photograph at the photo shop. They have a huge selection of props and costumes. It was pricey, but a really good keepsake, just book early because they only have so many bookings in a day. There is a discovery tray to practice gold panning, for children under 7 or so I wouldn't waste money doing actual gold panning. There is lots of places to purchase food, but I would suggest bringing a picnic, there were several shady spots to have one. Parking was free.
Stephanie G — Google review
Spent the day there for the first time. It's a very special place. It is, I guess, an open air museum, but there's something more to it. It's as if the day goes by naturally in Barkerville, the employees are busy working, either printing, forging things, taking piano lessons, randomly. It's as if they couldn't really see the visitors sometimes, and just live and go on with their day. It felt very natural, and this is what I loved the most about it. I stayed until the late afternoon as the town got quieter, to join the drum circle with Mike and Cheryl, and it was such an ideal conclusion. A shame that most visitors didn't stay for this occasion and walked by. Especially since it was National Indigenous People Day. The pastries at the bakery were also pretty good, I didn't get to try the rest in the other shops.

Barkerville is a jewel to visit, and break from your typical activities in this area for which you probably came into Quesnel area -- camping, fishing, hiking, hunting,... It is really nice to see that we managed to preserve one of historical sites and have an active program in presenting history of bc. It is not usual, walk around and read writings place. Barkerville offers live street shows, theater show, interpretive tours, and some nice food. We tried their bakery, and local ice cream. Nothing to complain about with our choices. They do have general store, restaurants, including Chinese one, and China Town to visit. I would recommend it to anyone who would like to make a break in it's voyage or regular activities.

Sign Post Forest

Sights & Landmarks
Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake is a unique and quirky attraction that started in 1942 when a U.S. soldier added a signpost pointing to his hometown while repairing signposts along the Alaska Highway. Since then, it has grown to over 80,000 signs from all around the world, each indicating its distance from Yukon. Visitors can contribute their own signs at the Visitor's Interpretive Centre, adding to the fascinating collection.
What an absolutely fun stop. This sign post forest is full of fun signs from all over the world. As of September 2024, there were over 120,000 signs. They count them every year. We made a sunflower sign and brought it with us. It was fun trying to find an empty spot to hang our sign. We spent a long time just walking around. The visitor centre that sits in the forest is no longer there. It is across the street at the Northern Lights Centre, which is a great place to visit. In the forest is a picnic table where you can enjoy your lunch or snacks. There is also a great parking lot at the back of the forest that can accommodate any RV. Make your sign, bring something to hang it (we brought screws and a drill) and take a picture.

This place is so cool. It has been around for such a long time. And people have posted signs over the years. You could walk around for hours. Just looking at all the signs

This is one of the most unique experience while driving the Alaska highway or visiting Yukon. This place will tell you how far people have driven to complete the historic Alaskan highway. There is no rush hour I suppose, it just takes time to get a n empty spot for your sign. Carry your own hammer, nails etc and keep looking for side of the posts I’m sure you will find a sweet corner for your personalized sign. Don’t stick your signs on the trees, it won’t be counted. Hope it helps.

Wasn't sure if this would be worth a stop, but I SO glad I took some time to explore it. It is massive! SO much more extensive than I'd imagined. I didn't have a sign with me to add to the collection, but it was fun walking around, looking for license plates from my state (Tennessee). Definitely worth a visit. Directly off the Alaska Highway.

Definitely a great stop along the Alaska Highway. Started by a homesick soldier during the construction of the Alaska Highway, it has grown to a huge forest of signposts, street signs, stickers, license plates and other methods of travellers leaving their mark. Fun place to walk around and of course leave your own memento. See if you can find our sticker when you're there.

A fun, quirky stop when passing through Watson Lake, YK! It’s neat to browse the signs to see where others have visited from. It would take hours to see and read all of the signs. A must-see if you like unique (and free!) roadside attractions.

Otherworldly fabulous! It was fun walking through the famous Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake, YT, and to see various signages from all over the world! We even found one of our friends' Motorcade RV Traveling caravan posted sign, who visited this spot 8 yrs ago! Fun! ✨️

Caribou Crossing Trading Post is a must-visit destination in Yukon, offering a unique experience with its Wildlife Museum featuring taxidermy exhibits of ancient and modern Northern creatures. The site also boasts a wildlife gallery, petting farm, and restaurant. Visitors can enjoy dog sled rides at specific times and interact with real sled dogs and puppies available for adoption. Additionally, the trading post provides clean facilities and friendly staff.
We were there late season (late September) and it was a bit less busy than it can be. Have a Sweet Beaver. Delicious.

Came here during a bus tour and we loved everything it had to offer! They had a dog kennel with sled tours as well as a wildlife museum and spots for food & drink. Chicken lunch was quite good & they offered complimentary tea & coffee as well as donuts. Just wish we had more time here! For the dog kennels: Came here during the summer so it was definitely not in season but was offered a great experience regardless! Admission to the kennel itself a free but dog sled tours are $45 per person for a 15 minute tour. While pricy, you can definitely see why it’s well worth it. They take great care of their dogs & even foster puppies as a partnership with the local humane society. Definitely recommend this!

Canada’s Yukon Adventure Wildadventureyukon.ca I wasn’t certain what to expect here, but I was very pleasantly surprised, in fact I could have spent longer than the one and a half hours we had. The barbecue chicken was very good, washed down with plentiful tea and coffee. The doughnuts however were just amazing, and I did admit to the young man who made them earlier on in the day, that I had two!! Thank you. The museum was very interesting, in particular the RCMP part, and the video that was running in the hut in the corner, about the gold rush. The stuffed animals were amazing. So thank you to all. A great place, very friendly and welcoming, and very informative.

So cute. The petting zoo was great. All the animals would pose with you for a pic. There were a bunch of husky puppies to play with. Inside was a large room full of stuffed animals from their taxidermist. The provided lunch was good. There was a vegetarian dish, not sure what that was. We had chicken, potatoes, bread, and coleslaw. The chicken was very tender and juicy. They have a little gift shop for souvenirs. Clean bathrooms.

What an amazing place! We rented a car and drove 2 hours from Skagway. We bought the package before we went, and it was worth every cent! We started with a summer dog sledding tour followed by a short talk about this amazing sport. We then had a great BBQ chicken lunch. Great gift shop and wildlife museum. The petting zoo was amazing as well. What an experience in Yukon, Canada! The drive to get there is also fantastic!

We were here 6 years ago with our teenage kids when we were in Skagway for a port day. Our kids had fond memories of the dog sled ride, petting farm with the huskies, and museum. We were in port again last month with our kids and teenage grandkids. We didn’t go with a tour company both times and beat the crowd by coming early. We rented a car in Skagway both times. The staff are very friendly. Our kids and grandkids tell us that it was one of the highlights and memorable experiences they had during our Alaskan cruise. This is a great place for the entire family.

The animals were also great and awesome The service is also great !! They do not accept American Express Only visa and Mastercard They do take cash Bathrooms are very clean and the staff is very friendly !! It was amazing to also see real sled dogs and puppies !! Located in Skagway, the Yukon Suspension Bridge is a popular attraction for tourists and families. It offers cultural and geological information, along with spectacular views and a reasonably priced gift shop. While the restaurant may be closed during off-peak seasons, visitors can still enjoy a great shopping experience in the commercial area nearby. The bridge is part of a scenic excursion that combines the best of the White Pass Railroad with an expedition to this unique destination.
Beautiful stop on our White Pass Rail excursion. The views were great and it was the perfect way to stretch our legs and fill up on snacks before heading back to Skagway. Don’t forget to get your passport stamped!

Interesting little place, and the only place to use a washroom on a very long road (for ticket holders only) We rented a car for the day - Skagway to Yukon. Lots of great stops, amazing scenery. This stop was one of many. Hint - If you buy a ticket, hold onto it so you can use it on your return drive.

The drive to Yukon from Skagway is very scenic, we stopped on the way twice to click pictures. Yukon suspension bridge is something not to be missed. The whole place is very scenic. After all the activity at the bridge it was great to grab some coffee and snacks at the small cafe on-site! Recommend everyone going in that area shouldn't miss this gem!

Hospitality was great, we visited as an excursion off the Radiance doing a bus/train tour of the e area. Amazing homemade chili, and even better views!

We visited here about 4 weeks ago as part of a Royal Caribbean Excursion. It was definitely a very busy place with several tour buses arriving at the same time. While busy it was beautiful and interesting. Some signage explained about the geology and the people of the area. They had a really nice gift shop and a snack area but unfortunately the restaurant was closed while we were there. We decided to hang back towards the end of our time and it was much easier to get across the bridge without as many people. Most seemed to go for the bridge first. On the other side of the bridge is a mock-up of a prospector's cabin which was quite interesting to see. The area is really beautiful. They also had some Mammoth bones on display. Outside of it being so busy we had a really nice time. For us it was definitely worth the trip.

Nature & Parks
Jewell Gardens is a flower and vegetable show garden located in Skagway, Alaska. The gardens are renowned for their impressive displays of wildflowers and vegetables, as well as their annual contest to see who could grow the biggest rhubarb.
My wife and I visited in October 2019 as part of the last ship of the season. We had a great time, picked up several gifts for friends and relatives and we each got a great globe keepsakes. I bought some display lights from Amazon and keep these in the living room. Aside form a great in-depth look at glass making, everyone there was supper fun and happy. The snacks were okay, but being end of the season I’m sure we didn’t have the normal experience. Due to weather we also didn’t get to explore, just the making and snacks. But still worth every penny.

We booked a glass blowing experience on the website in May, only to arrive 9/15/21 to find out they have been closed all season. Had to walk the 2 miles from the ship as the shuttle driver told us they had were closed and no buses. Since they had our $284 and had confirmed our booking we thought maybe someone would be there. No luck, but the lawn guy let us look at the gardens. Hoping Max will refund my money promptly.

The White Pass & Yukon Route Railway is a restored Gold Rush era railroad that takes passengers on a scenic journey past waterfalls, gorges, and glaciers. The railway was constructed through the Coastal Mountains following the 1896 gold rush, featuring tunnels, trestles, steep grades, and sharp bends. It runs between Skagway in Alaska and Carcross in the Yukon territory, offering breathtaking views of Lake Bennett and its surroundings.
Agreed with all other reviews. Very cool, informative historic train highlighting the gold rush and the amazing Klondike trail. The views were unreal and the train was comfortable. Loved being able to stand between cars on the outside and get some amazing pix and videos. Recommended!

We were on am Oceania cruise to this location. 6 of our group went on the train. Was a great experience and took about 3 hours. Great evening views. My brother in law and I stayed on the platform from the station until we did the loop at the top. No one else in our car was going to the front or back platform. The view is completely different on the platform versus in the cart. Highly recommend going on the platform for at least a few minutes. Highly recommend going on this scenic train tour.

Visited in June 2025. This is one of the excursions I chose from the cruise. There was an adult only car available, so I chose that one. Before the train ride, I was not aware you could hang out outside the train car in the front or the back of your car, so this was really cool. I did not sit in my seat for most of the ride. There were water bottles available if you get thirsty. The views of nature are really great, and I recommend doing this train ride.

A truly beautiful journey. I particularly enjoyed the live commentary, which gave helpful warnings when the main photo opportunities were coming up. It was also great that the train picked up near the cruise port. A must visit attraction.

This scenic route has beautiful views. I loved this experience. It is the opposite side of the valley from the road...and we decided to also take the bus to see it from a different viewpoint. The air was chilly so the we went out in the viewing deck from short bursts. The train announcer and the attendants were very friendly. We booked this while on the cruise so we didn't know if it was hyped up or not but we really enjoyed it. The White Pass route would have taken dedicated and a drive for gold. Those men were not quitters. I am not saying that gold was worth striving for but it was admirable what they did. We were on a comfortable train pulling up the mountain. They were on the ground. It was neat to see it all.

I went on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway with my family of four and we had a great time. The views were absolutely stunning the entire way with mountains waterfalls and deep valleys that looked like something out of a movie. Even though almost every seat was taken there was still plenty of space to move around and enjoy the ride. The vintage train cars were really charming and they even provided water which was a nice touch. The staff was friendly and the narration gave a lot of interesting history about the gold rush and the area. It was definitely a memorable part of our trip to Alaska.

Wonderful experience and casual trip to the summit. Easy access from the port and the staff was amazing and full of information. The views are spectacular and are breathtaking! Be sure to step outside of the train and get some amazing pictures. It lasts about 3 hours.

The Red Onion Saloon is a seasonal landmark offering American cuisine and drinks in a lively setting, along with a brothel museum. Situated on the corner of 2nd & Broadway, this historic establishment dates back to 1897 during the Gold Rush era. Once one of the finest bordellos in town, it now serves as a bar, restaurant, and museum.
This is a place you have to experience. I loved the atmosphere. We were seated upstairs and had a nice view of the bar. We ordered their famous Duck Fart shots which were tasty. There was an old grumpy guy on a keyboard singing raunchy songs and was very entertaining.

To begin with, the entire staff was very accommodating and friendly. It was a last second decision on my part but they were able to get me on the 12:30. I took the 2 hour tour with Madame Tilly. Her energy was infectious, her delivery with the jokes was fantastic, and her knowledge of the history was top-tier! It's clear she has a passion for the job and everything that it entails. I stayed for a quick bite. The quesadilla was so good! The bar staff was great and everyone was smiling. This experience is a must!

Anybody in the area definitely needs to stop by. The food was honestly absolutely amazing. Not to mention the cocktails that they make in the area are hilarious and delicious. Don't forget to come back to see the saloon tour that they offer, which is also a great piece of history. In the area of how the town thrived and honestly would not have made it without it. The staff here are super amazing and the character for the tours that they deliver are great
Zachary C — Google review
One of the funniest tours I have ever made. This was indeed a brothel back in the days of the Klondike Gold rush. So the tour is about the daily life of the women who entertained the men at that time and you will see part of their living ways, including their rooms (with original wall papers), clothes, objects. The tour leaders' narrative is super funny and educational at the same time. It will last around 20 minutes and costs 20 dollars (including a souvenir). The visit takes place at the upper floor. Downstairs it's the bar/restaurant.
Ana T — Google review
The saloon is a wonderful nostalgic place, full of gold rush vibes and the rough and raw of Alaska when it was young. The decor is very time period and highlights the brothel upstairs. Walk through the saloon to the back and sign up for a tour, it's fun, informative and the best part of the saloon. Although many say the service was friendly, we found the opposite to be true at the bar. The bartenders were anything but friendly, I'd say maybe a bit condescending and troubled is a better description. Checked it off the historical bucket list, loved the tour, won't need to go back!

✨iconic✨ First, I started with a tour with my cruise ship. Madam Annie Thyme met us at the port and gave a good history tour on the way to town. We had GREAT jokes and stories. I loved this tour of Skagway and hearing the tales of the people of the gold rush. Second, I thought it was super important for them to cover the stories the way she did. Highlighting the women who built the town with their escapades, sin taxes and looking out for each other. It’s not always the easiest to talk about. We ended our tour with a walk through of the Red Onion Saloon. Lastly, it was such a good experience - we went back!! The next week when we were back in town we had lunch there. Five of us split two pizzas- The Shady Lady and The Spicy Spangler. We coupled it with some local brews and reindeer farts. So good! 10/10
Kelli B — Google review
We were here on vacation and learned of this famous spot so we wanted to try it out. It was a old brothel so the teeming and history is awesome in this place as they have it set up like it was originally. We sat down to eat after about a hour wait because the inside is so small and there were so many ships that came into port. Unfortunately we weren't able to have any wraps or sandwiches because we were told that their freezers broke so we stuck to pizzas and a quesadilla. I got the pulled pork quesadilla and I couldn't believe how great it was. Big portion and definitely top of the lists of ones I've had. We were with friends so we got 3 pies and they were honestly some of the best pizza also, which I couldn't believe from a old saloon. The pies were big and loaded with ingredients. They cooked them perfectly. We got some of their specialty drinks that were very good also. I definitely recommend this place if your in town for the day for either drinks or food.
Wayne M — Google review
The name is so damn catchy, you want to go there. When you walk through the town and see the building, you really want to go in! ATMOSPHERE: Located on a corner that's real close to the cruise ship pier, it's super busy with us tourist folk. The place used to be a brothel, and there's a tour or museum upstairs but was closed when we went. The bar is fairly big, and the rest of the saloon is filled with regular tables. A crown moulding of bed pans line the walls. You feel the oldness of the building with its dim lighting, dark old floors, and the staff dressed in themed costumes. The bartenders have low busty shirts on like an old school Hooters. BEVERAGE: Alaskan White is the bomb! If you buy a pitcher they give you a comp beer glass with the logo. FOOD: We didn't eat anything but the menu offers mainstays like nachos, salsa & chips, hummus, 10 different pizzas, soups, salads, and sandwiches. SERVICE: The wait for a table would've been long since there were 4 ships in the harbor. Luckily we snagged some seats at the bar. Everyone was very friendly. OVERALL: Good fun place to go before you jump back on your ship.

Miles Canyon, a recreational canyon formed 8.5 million years ago, offers stunning basalt cliffs, scenic trails, rushing rapids, and diverse wildlife. This historic site was once a challenging passage for gold seekers traveling from Skagway to the Yukon River in hopes of striking it rich. The area's significance is reflected in the development of the settlement known as Whitehorse due to the foaming waters resembling white steeds.
Wish I'd had more time for hiking. Gorgeous emerald waters. Lovely purple crocus. No problem with parking when I was there. Not far off the main road, near Whitehorse.

Historic Sites
The S.S. Klondike National Historic Site is a vintage sternwheeler ship reminiscent of those that navigated the Yukon River during the 1898 Klondike Gold Rush. Operated by Parks Canada, this site offers a captivating journey through history, with lively interpreters in period costume sharing tales of adventure and fortune-hunters in the Klondike goldfields.
The SS Klondike is a historic sternwheeler vessel, now preserved as a National Historic Site of Canada in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. It represents one of the last remaining examples of steam-powered paddlewheelers that played a crucial role in the transportation of goods and passengers along the Yukon River during the early 20th century. Originally constructed in 1929 by the British Yukon Navigation Company, the ship was designed to carry freight between Whitehorse and Dawson City. It sank in 1936 due to an accident but was subsequently rebuilt and relaunched as the SS Klondike II in 1937, with enhanced capacity for cargo and passengers. The vessel operated until 1955, when river transportation declined due to the development of road infrastructure. It was then moved to its current dry-docked location on the banks of the Yukon River, adjacent to the Robert Campbell Bridge in Whitehorse, where it serves as a museum exhibit illustrating the evolution of Yukon River navigation and life during that era. As of September 2025, the SS Klondike is undergoing a $14 million restoration project to address structural issues and ensure waterproofing, rendering it temporarily closed to visitors. Managed by Parks Canada, the site offers educational insights into the region's transportation history upon reopening.
Francis H — Google review
It's a bit unfair to rate this site as the S.S. Klondike is closed to the public as it is currently being restored. The Parks Canada welcome centre, however, is open, as are the grounds, a small cinema showing the movie, “In the Days of the Riverboats,” and an escape room. Once this famous riverboat reopens to the public it will likely become again a must-see attraction in Whitehorse. For now, however, you can prioritize going to the many other fun sites and activities on offer in Whitehorse and surrounding areas.
James C — Google review
I was quite disappointed that the boat is inaccessible because of restoration. You can only view it from outside the fencing that is all around it. I realize projects like this are necessary sometimes, but they need to have a much more prominent notice on their website about it being closed. Or better yet actually close it and put all the resources into completing the restoration in a more timely manner.
Malcolm G — Google review
We stopped here even though the boat is currently closed to the public. They are restoring it and will be reopened in the future. They have a small visitor centre and the staff was very nice. There is still plenty of information about the boat without being able to go invitation. There are also some red Adirondack chairs that are part of Parks Canada. It was fun taking our pictures in the chairs.
Donna S — Google review
The site was cute. The shop was being restored, so we couldn't for the boat. It is supposed to be done by 2029 according to the young man in the info center. Some nice souvenirs. Two cute cabins--one with an 18- minute video about the shop and the other seemed to be an escape room.
Melody M — Google review
Stopped in to visit this museum and ended up hopping on a tour that had just started for an extra $10. The tour was interesting, very professionally done by parks Canada, and the other visitors struck up a conversation and asked good questions. I recommend the tour rather than just looking around, as you feel more like you have experienced the real thing.
William S — Google review
I didn’t do the tour, but there was an informative historical video (about 20 minutes) and a brochure that was about $2 which explained everything you need to know about the boat. While the boat is undergoing repairs and only the lower level is able to be accessed at the time of writing (July 2023), it was still a worthwhile place to visit while in Whitehorse.
Dane B — Google review
Although the ship was not open, it's great to have a preserved steamship, and I like how accessible it is in terms of being able to walk around the ship so close to it, to marvel at it, take photos, and read the contents of the description boards around the ship, even at night in the middle of winter. It was also beautifully lit up! The only thing was many of the boards around the ship were dark and can't be read unless I turn my flashlights on -- it would be a lot nicer if there were illuminating lights!

This family-friendly destination offers visitors a chance to observe majestic wildlife such as elk, moose, woodland caribou, mountain goats, and even baby moose.
Excellent staff. Very friendly and helpful. We walked around as we like to hike and prefer that to the tour bus or bike. Animals were great but the moose were elusive which is normal apparently. I've been coming to Canada for 10 years now and never seen one. Maybe they are either very shy or are hiding from hunters?

This place was fantastic! Our guide Kaitlyn made this tour a fun and educational one. She was humorous and informative, sharing with us about all the facts that we did not know. The animals such as the lynxes and the fox living there were all rescued and have grown into stronger selves. Another entertaining part was the ground squirrels (see photo). They were so cute and never failed to make us laugh! This has been a memorable experience and I will definitely come back!

Had such a great time and would go back again! We booked a bus tour, and so glad we did. The walk around the entire preserve might have taken a bit too long, but they do have bike rentals as an option. But we were glad we did the guided tour so we could learn more and ask questions. Piper was a fantastic guide and we were able to see pretty much all the animals in the preserve. Highly recommend checking this place out!

I took my Dad who was visiting from BC to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve and did a private bus tour with a Lynx feeding. Brit was our tour guide and she was amazing! She was so knowledgeable, patient with all of our questions, professional, and very accommodating to my Dad's decreased mobility. She was also super personable and friendly. The Lynx feeding was an unreal experience, and we loved learning about the history of the preserve. I highly recommend booking the private bus tour (with Brit specifically!) if you want a more intimate wildlife experience.

Tour guide was a ton of fun and very knowledgeable. Kept it fun for the kids and moved at a good pace. It was really fun to learn about all of thr animals and see most of them. Thanks for having us!

This place is a must-visit. We stumbled across it by accident during our travels and had zero regrets. The area offers a 3-mile walking loop where you can see the animals, and every dollar goes directly toward their care. Restrooms are available along the route, but don’t forget to bring a water bottle—it can turn into quite the workout.

5km walk. One slight hill along the way. An option to rent fat bikes which I would try next time. The animal enclosures are large so you may or may not see all the animals as a preserve isn’t like a zoo. But thrilled to see some Yukon wildlife up close.

Our guide was excellent. The minibus was comfortable and we saw all the species in the reserve, including the lynx and that even the guide hadn’t seen in a few weeks!

I went on this excursion because my friend had this on her bucket list, really didn’t want to go. I was so glad I did! This was hands down THE best excursion I’ve ever been on in all of my cruise travels. The experience was engaging-right from the moment we entered the property. Patrick was informative and a wonderful start to this amazing visit. His relationship with the wolves was mesmerizing. Then you get to meet The Host, Mr. Kroschel. I was blown away by the depth and breadth of his knowledge and by just how much he truly cares. He wears it like the incredible badge of honor it is. His animals are beautifully housed, the area looking as if it were put together by a mad genius-which it was. I was immediately smitten. With all of it. Lock, stock and barrel, as my Gram used to say. The time seemed to be over in a blink and I was sad and reluctant to leave. The connection you felt coming from him; connection to his animals, his surroundings and his guests was laser sharp and awe-inspiring to witness-that’s how I felt-I was witnessing true genius and great heart. I left a grateful woman.

I LOVED this place, and if you're an animal lover, you will as well. Steve was great and made the tour fun & interactive. It's definitely a better environment than a zoo, but that also removes a level of safety for kids and dumb people lol. I hope Steve is able to keep living his dream of caring for animals in a natural environment for many years to come. If your ship excursion is full, I *think* chillkat tours is who you can call, or get ahold of the center and they'll link you up.
Debra — Google review
Steve is a knowledgeable host that clearly has a close bond with his animals. Patrick really made my visit so memorable, making sure my sister, son & his fiance and I had one on one time with the animals. I wish I would have gotten a photo with him. I wanted to stay in one of their cabins and never leave. I look at my photos every day. The porcupine was my favorite. And I'm from there, not even a tourist. I returned to Seattle and still think about The Wildlife Center every day.

I would give this 6 stars if I could. We went as part of a cruise ship excursion and everything was amazing from the bus driver to everyone working there. The animals were well cared for and we got amazing photos. We had a 2 year old with us and you will need to watch kids closely as these are wild animals (no fingers in fences!). Like others said it was a decent amount of walking on dirt paths and not stroller friendly. There was a gift shop at the end. There were also a couple of bathrooms.
Amanda W — Google review
Interesting place where it is obvious that there is much love and care for the animals here. Informative tour overall. The only downfall is that the tour group was too large so it made it uncomfortable to stand around and wait your turn to see the animals. I think that our tour could have been split into 2 groups instead of one large one. The bus ride from the cruise port was great. The bus driver was EXTREMELY interesting and full of fun stories. The bus ride to and from the Kroschel Wildlife Centre was one of our most favorite bus rides in all of the tours we have taken... and we take A LOT!!!
Tori C — Google review
We had such a great day at the Center. Mr. Kroschel was a great story teller of the animals. We learned so much and enjoyed each and every animal we were able to see. Our bus driver, was excellent. She told us so many local stories and helped us spot wildlife along the way. If you are not sure if you should do this tour or another. Choose this one. You will be happy you did.
Julie W — Google review
Toured the center as an excursion via Princess Cruise Lines and by far one of my favorite excursions of the trip. Connecting to animals was amazing and my daughter had a blast. She was very fond of Duck Henry and his caribou neighbors, although her joy of feeding them may leader to an ungulate obesity epidemic.
Derek H — Google review
What an amazing experience. This is by far one of if not THE best excursions I've taken while cruising. Steve, Mario and Mario's daughter were fantastic. They are information and use humor to keep things lively. They should be nominated for a humanitarian award for all that they do for education and the environment. This is a long review so in the words of Steve. "Hey Mario, they are losing interest so it's time to move along"

St. Elias Alpine Guides is one of the best guide companies in Alaska, offering half-day outings to 15-day expeditions for a great value. They provide all necessary gear and food, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a wilderness experience without prior rafting knowledge. The company's well-trained guides ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.
We thoroughly enjoyed our mill tour with Carson. For it being only his second tour, he was very knowledgeable and didn’t miss a beat! On the mill tour, you get a quick walk and talk about a few buildings, then you go uphill and actually start the mill tour at the top of this 14 story building. Wonderful views out of the windows and a lot of the inside still intact with machinery and all. Well worth the money!

The 4-Day Basecamp hiking trip with SEAG was the best part of our travels in Alaska. The entire staff is extremely welcoming, helpful, and knowledgeable, and made our trip planning a breeze! Our guide Charlie was super knowledgeable about the terrain and history of the Wrangells and taught us many backcountry skills throughout our trip. He was always making sure we were comfortable and having fun. After our return from the backcountry, Charlie showed us around town and had great recommendations for activities to continue our adventure during our free days in McCarthy. Booking with SEAG is must if you are visiting McCarthy, AK wether you are looking for a short 1 day activity or a multi day expedition you will be in good hands! Thanks a ton to Anya, Charlie, and all of the staff at SEAG for making our trip and unforgettable experience!!

Did the ice cave exploration tour on Aug 6. This was an absolutely stunning experience — we’d never seen anything like this before or even imagined it could exist outside of movies (think Frozen come to life!). The scenery was breathtaking, and exploring three incredible ice caves felt surreal. Our guide picked us up at 8:30 AM from the McCarthy side of the Kennicott River Footbridge, kept us safe with the safety helmets, constant safety tips, and captured plenty of great photos for us along the way. Her care, flexibility, and willingness to adapt made the day all the more memorable. The tour was advertised as a 5.5–6 hour adventure (9:00 AM to about 2:30/3:00 PM), but we were initially on track to finish by 12:30 PM. I mentioned this to our guide and expressed my disappointment — and she immediately went above and beyond to make sure we left happy. She took us on an extra hike to the Root Glacier viewpoint, extending our trip to about 1:30 PM before driving us back to the starting point by 1:45. Overall, a fun and beautiful Alaskan adventure!

We signed up for the St. Elias Alpine Guides tour of the Kennecott Mill so that we could go inside the restricted buildings, and it was well worth it. Our guide was both knowledgeable and funny, and being able to go inside the mill added a lot to our experience of the historic site. The tour through the mill does include a fairly steep hike to the top first, and lots of stairs and ladders inside for coming back down through the building.

We did the mill tour and the full day glacier hike with em. It's a must do if you are visiting Kennicott. The knowledge of the guides is amazing and while you can do the glacier hike on your own, it's must more fun and extensive with the guides. Big thumbs up for Logan and Cat for the glacier hikes and Charlie for the mill tour!!!

Caroline was our guide and she made the Mill tour exceptional. We hiked to the top of the mill and worked our way down inside it. Caroline took the time to explain how the copper ore was processed and her knowledge was impressive.

We just finished the Bergs to Beaches 7-day trip with SEAG and it was a fabulous experience. The terrain was very challenging but the views were so rewarding. Our guide Stella was amazing. She confidently guided us through many challenges and attended to all of our needs. She prepared amazing meals from the SEAG cookbook and they did not disappoint. This trip is not for the faint of heart but if you’re up for a challenge then I highly recommend. 10/10 would do again!

Worthington Glacier, located in Thompson Pass and visible from Richardson Highway, is a stunning natural attraction worth visiting. It's about a half hour north of Valdez and offers various viewpoints along the highway. For a closer look, visitors can stop at Worthington Glacier State Recreation Site, which is open from June to September and provides amenities like restrooms, picnic facilities, and a general store.
Views of Worthington Glacier and surrounding Thompson Pass are worth the hike to see them.

The Worthington Glacier is melting fast! We saw this ten years apart standing close to the glacier at very different locations. This time there were lots of waterfalls crashing down. It is beautiful.
Misty S — Google review
A perfect stop on the way from Anchorage to Valdeze. The maintained trail is very short, so if you want a closer glimpse of the glacier, you need to be a bit adventurous and make your way over the rocks and rubble yourself. Make smart choices, and you can get right up to the glacier. The river runs right out of the glacier to the beautiful lake below. It is picturesque whether you hike to the glacier, or enjoy the view from the overlook.
Anne V — Google review
We just went out to Worthington Glacier the second week of September, didn't realize that you can't actually touch the glacier like a lot of reviews had said. Apparently those are not updated. The woman running the show out there, greets you and takes your $5 for parking, and her dog (I think his name was Tucker??) Were super friendly and very helpful with answering any questions about the geography , etc (including that you really haven't been able to touch the glacier in at least 5 years). It's a beautiful drive out through Thompson Pass though so would still recommend as a stop over.

The Solomon Gulch Hatchery in Valdez is the largest pink salmon hatchery in North America and a must-visit attraction. From July to October, visitors can witness the incredible sight of salmon returning to the hatchery through the fish ladder and along the walkway. This also provides an opportunity to spot wildlife such as bears, sea lions, and fishermen drawn by the salmon run. The outdoor visitor display and viewing point offer informative video screens and displays explaining the hatchery's processes.
Some people we met in Valdez told us about the fish hatchery so we had to go check it out. This was so interesting and such great information as you walk along the visitor walk. It was fun watching the sea lions getting the fish and a great learning experience on how the salmon return to where they were born. This was the first time I had been to a fish Hatchery. There is a nice waterfall right across from the parking area, which was an added bonus.
Donna S — Google review
Even though we got there in September the experience was like no other. Lots of salmon still spawning upstream and many many more on the rocks and shores that finished their life cycle. Tons of seagulls and a few sea lions fill the air with their vocal power. Incredible views and if you're skilled or lucky enough you might catch a salmon that is still lively.
Sean M — Google review
I could, and have, spend hours here!!!! At high tide (and a few hours on either side of it) you will see the sea lions gorging on the returning salmon. It’s really cool to watch!!! Bears are sometimes here too, tons of seagulls, some eagles, seals, and sea otters. This is all when the fish are running and food is plentiful.
Lynn V — Google review
This is a really cool place to come and see wildlife if you are ever in Valdez. I came here with my wife and her friends and had an amazing time. It was so fascinating watching the sea lions swim around and eat salmon.
Pablo G — Google review
At high tide, it's a beautiful sight. At low tide, it's a completely different story. At high tide, you see thousands of salmon swimming back to the river to lay their eggs. Sea lions eat the salmon, as they naturally intended. At low tide, you see that the sea lions don't eat the salmon at all, they only kill them, and then thousands upon thousands lie there. Dead. Sea lions kill salmon and just let them lie here on the beach. Seagulls pass by to peck out their eyes. They don't eat the salmon either. Nature can be vicious sometimes.
Stan E — Google review
Great place to visit! It is especially good during the salmon runs because you can see a lot of salmon coming into the hatchery. There are also a lot of sea lions hanging around which are really fun to watch.

Nice place to see salmon run and sea lions. We were able to see lot of salmon trying to swim up the river to their breeding grounds. The area near the hatchery have a good description about the salmon and hatching of the egges before releasing it into the sea

Wonderful place to see the salmon trying to get up the fish ladder. Plenty of sea lions having a feast, with occasional sea otters. A great place to sit and watch. Plenty of parking and interesting facts about the hatchery & the salmon.

Columbia Glacier, located in Prince William Sound, Alaska, has been rapidly retreating since the 1980s. This massive glacier is one of the world's fastest-moving and has receded approximately 19 miles since then. It originates from the Chugach Mountains and spans about 360 square miles with a length of 25 miles. Visitors can embark on day trips from Valdez to witness this natural wonder by boat or kayak.

An enormous Alaskan glacier that moves quickly but is also rapidly shortening in length The Columbia Glacier is one of Alaska’s largest glaciers, with an area of about 360 square miles (920 square km) and a length of 25 miles (40 km). It descends from the Chugach Mountains in southern Alaska to Prince William Sound (an inlet of the Gulf of Alaska), where it calves large numbers of icebergs into the sea. Shrinking record The Columbia Glacier is one of the fastest moving in North America, but its fast forward movement is offset by extremely rapid calving of icebergs at its terminus, at the rate of some 14 million tons (13 million tonnes) every day. As a result, since the 1960s, the glacier’s terminus has moved backward, and since 2011 it has become detached from some of its largest tributary glaciers. The retreat cannot be attributed solely to global warming, as other nearby glaciers are not shrinking at the same pace. Instead, experts believe it is connected to the shape of the bedrock channel under the glacier.
Andrey N — Google review
It’s a really beautiful glacier that it just won’t be there after a few years which makes me feel so sad. It’s scary how fast we are loosing that! The experience is amazing!

MICA Guides offers thrilling experiences such as ziplining on the Nitro and G 2, which are among the longest in Alaska. The G 2 is also the fastest in the state, providing an exhilarating ride near Matanuska River and Matanuska Glacier. Their knowledgeable guides prioritize safety during activities like hiking and ice climbing. Visitors have praised their guides for being patient, professional, and skilled at leading groups.
Alaska trip will always be memorable. We started our first excursion with the Matanuska glacier walk. This glacier is over 22,000 years old and we got an amazing experience walking over it with MICA guides. Bailey was our guide. What I loved was that they kept the tour groups small so it was just us 4 with Bailey. She took her time explaining the history behind everything. That’s what we wanted, someone who was not rushed. She explained to us the benefits of the glacial mud. We even brought some of that home 😊 She helped us figure out what's inside a really deep hole created by the flowing water over so many years. It was dangerous to go any closer as we could slip in so we tried recording it using our selfie stick 😂 (spoiler: the stick wasn’t long enough to solve the mystery) But this goes to say that there is a lot of story in every part of the glacier and even though it's fun, it can be dangerous, so go with someone who knows their stuff. We also got to walk between the tall cracks of the glacier. What I couldn’t show was how cold and tasty the fresh water was that we drank directly from the glacier ❄️ All in all a 10/10 experience. I would definitely recommend them.

Shout out to Quinn and Alaina for an amazing glacier trek! We had so much fun laughing and learning from them. Trekking the glacier and getting to do some climbs and rappels was one for the books. Samantha was accommodating when weather conditions changed our initial helicopter plan and honestly, I think we won with the advanced trek - it became about the journey and not just arriving at the destination. We 💯 recommend MICA!

My family and I did the glacier hike and had an incredible time. There was great information on how to prepare and the staff was wonderful. Our guide, Bailey, was so sweet, knowledgeable, funny, helpful, and personable. She even gave us great recommendations on where else to go in the area. We all had such a great time and the glacier itself was obviously so worth it.

The private ice fall trek was an amazing trip with such a great guide, Beryl. This is the only tour we can attend with the two little one, since most of the tour require at least a minimum of eight years old. The trip itself is very interesting and adventure for the children, and also well educate. Thank you MICA guides and Beryl for this amazing glacier trip for our family.

Our experience with MICA Guides at Matanuska Glacier was truly one of the highlights of our Alaska trip! From the moment we arrived, everything ran smoothly — check-in was quick and easy, setting the tone for what turned out to be an extraordinary adventure. We weren’t entirely sure what to expect going in, but the glacier hike exceeded all of our expectations. It was thrilling, adventurous, and absolutely breathtaking. The terrain was diverse and exciting, and we were fortunate to have perfect weather during our hike — it started raining right after we finished, so we really lucked out! We were placed in a small, private group which made the experience feel even more special. Everyone was active and fun, and our guide, Sam, was phenomenal. His energy was contagious, and he was clearly knowledgeable, incredibly well-trained, and absolutely passionate about what he does. Sam was not only entertaining and encouraging, but also made sure we stayed safe while pushing our limits in the best way possible. He guided us to incredible viewpoints, helped us climb unique ice formations, and made sure we didn’t miss a thing. He’s a true professional and clearly born for this kind of wilderness guiding. Reaching the top and taking in the vast, glacial views was nothing short of magical — it felt like we were on another planet. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that’s hard to put into words. If you're visiting Alaska, this glacier hike is an absolute must-do, even if it requires a long drive (which it did for us — and it was so worth it). Thank you, MICA Guides, and especially Sam, for an unforgettable day!

We highly recommend ice climbing with MICA Guides! Dakota was our guide for our June 2025 private ice climbing tour and he was fantastic! Our younger son is 11 and Dakota was especially patient and encouraging with him. The adventure was definitely family friendly, and everyone at MICA was friendly and courteous. The scenery was breathtaking, we loved the trek out to the glacier and learning from our guide. We each got to do 4 climbs and Dakota tailored the outing for our individual skills. We had a phenomenal trip to Alaska, full of epic hikes and adventures, but when people ask us what our favorite part was, we all mention our day of ice climbing on Matanuska Glacier!

We had a fabulous time with our guide Sam. Our group of 6 (ages 11, 13, 17, 19, 42 and 43 years old) felt safe hiking around the glacier. Mica lends you raincoats if needed and boots with ice spikes to make the trek easy. Sam was great at taking photos and sharing details about the ice. Highly recommend MICA guides for a group looking for some nature adventures.

We went ice climbing with Hannah and she was an amazing guide! The whole experience was great - the gear-up, glacier hike, climbing, hike back to the front country, and they even had a coffee and ice cream stand at the end for a treat. Great experience. We did ice climbing & glacier paddle boarding. 100/10 honestly. Our guide was so awesome with instructions and really made us feel comfortable on the ice. Did the 3 hour glacier hike with Angie and Chantae. It was a really great tour and value. The guides were extremely fun. The communication was great on safety and direction during the excursion. They both had a wealth of knowledge about glaciers and the environment around us. They were very helpful with suggestions for other sites , activities and dinning in the area. We took several of their suggestions! The office was also very helpful before the trip. Hope to do other tours with Nova in the future!

We can’t say enough about Nova Alaska Guides. Everyone we encountered was great and both of our adventures were amazing! Pretty sure our 14 year old has now found his calling to come join your crew as a guide in the summers when he gets to college 😎🧗🏞️ Day 1 with Nova: We had an amazing day with Drew & Thomas on the Backcountry Ice Climbing tour. They were so knowledgeable & appreciated their attention to safety. This was a very long & challenging day but was something we will remember forever and a highlight from our Alaska vacation. We also really appreciated how much this tour challenged us (2 adults & 14 year old) & we’re proud that we accomplished it! Thank you Nova, Thomas & Drew! Day 2 with Nova: Wow! This was by far the most thrilling & exhilarating experience of our entire vacation! Once again, Nova guides continued to impress us with their attention to safety on the Six Mile Canyon Whitewater rafting experience. They made sure we were safe & had a blast from the time we got onto the bus. Huge thank you to Jarvis, Bear, Newbie & the rest of the crew! Our 3-hour hike on the Matanuska Glacier with Angie was a wonderful experience. She is very fun, and even though we don’t fully understand the language, we were still able to enjoy and try to follow what she was explaining! The company is very responsible and well-organized—highly recommended.

Portage Glacier, located in Portage Valley on the Kenai Peninsula in Southcentral Alaska, is a popular attraction just 55 miles southeast of Anchorage. Once stretching to where the Seward Highway now sits, this 10-story-tall glacier is a remnant of its former self and offers visitors a glimpse into the region's unique and wild landscape.
Hiked the postage pass trail today and it has to be one of my new favorites. We saw some swans in a lake near the top! Beautiful views that are SO worth the steep hike up!

Beautiful glacier! You can pull over on the highway to see it from afar, or take a boat tour for a closer view. Truly amazing. I just hope it remains for generations to come so others can experience these glaciers.

We bought a boat tour. It was reasonably priced and took us up to Portage Glacier. You can get tickets in advance or buy at Portage Glacier Cafe which is near by. It was lovely.
Zhanna S — Google review
Great glacier cruise. Was a very active day for the glacier to be dropping chunks off. The crew was very nice and knowledgeable. Three restrooms on board and trash cans. Signs and photos from past and present crew. Would highly recommend the glacier cruise.

We took the Portage Glacier tour and that of the wildlife refuge and enjoyed it immensely. The majesty of the glacier was both overwhelming and awe-inspiring in its scope, and the ability to see it in close proximity on the boat tour is not to be missed.

This is worth the walk! Was amazing to see with my family just after leaving Whittier
David B — Google review
This stop was part of our Alaskan land/sea cruise and it was wonderful! Bundle up because it gets a little chilly! Otherwise the boat ride and tour guide were wonderful! The glacier was beautiful! I highly recommend doing this!
Kim N — Google review
We were lucky enough to visit it on a cloudy day. I think that was the best condition to capture the glacier's bluish color. We booked this tour in Anchorage and it included the Alaska wildlife conservation center and Alyeska resort. Both places are worth it, but the glacier is the gem. The whole day's experience was unforgettable. When the boat was not far from the glacier the huge chunk of ice calved into the water with a loud splash. That was a sad reminder of the glacier's progressing recession.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, situated in Portage Valley, is a refuge for injured and orphaned animals. Spanning 200 acres, this non-profit organization is dedicated to wildlife conservation and care. Visitors can stroll, drive or bike through the 1.5-mile loop within the sanctuary to observe animals like bison, reindeer, wolves, and bears against the stunning backdrop of Chugach mountains and Turnagain Arm Inlet coastline.
My husband and I visited the conservation center as part of a Glacier and Wildlife tour. We had an absolute blast. The bears were our favorite and we got some wonderful pictures. I enjoyed seeing animals up close that are normally behind glass at a zoo. I love the conservation efforts for the wood bison as well. We got to see some very new baby bison while we were there. I highly recommend visiting if you're in Alaska.

I’ve always loved this place — not only as somewhere to bring out-of-town guests, but also for a fun day trip with my daughter and her friends. The mission behind the center is truly meaningful, and I really appreciate that the animals are kept in large, natural, and humane enclosures. The staff are always friendly, welcoming, and clearly care about the work they do. It’s a wonderful experience every time we visit!
Savanah E — Google review
I really want to give this place 5 stars but there were some issues that kept me from doing so. First they had hours posted. I arrived just at opening time and the gates were closed. Myself along with a few other vehicles waited at the gate for about 20 minutes. Finally a car came and told us they would not be opening until 12:30. So I left and came back. Upon coming back I was greeted by a friendly person at the toll booth. I paid my fare and entered. The first thing I noticed were a lot of the exhibits were vacant. Not sure if it was the time of year or if they had lost or removed some of the animals. I watched the crew feed bears and that was great and absolutely the highlight of the trip. In all I would say it took me about 40 minutes to see everything including the 15 minutes or so I spent watching the bear feeding. It was neat but don’t think I’d come back.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is an absolute gem! Watching bears roam freely in their natural habitat was breathtaking, and seeing coyotes, caribou, and other native animals up close made the experience unforgettable. The center is beautifully maintained, educational, and truly dedicated to wildlife preservation. A must-visit for anyone exploring Alaska!
Subhankar D — Google review
Had higher expectations in terms of number of bears and moose we will get to see here but turned out to be not as great as we expected. We thought of the entrance fee as a donation for the care of the amazing animals they have. We did not see a bull moose which was our main goal. We did get see musk ox and lynx which were quite cool.
Chirag S — Google review
I did the Walk on the Wild Side tour as a birthday gift to myself, and it was amazing! Ivie was a great, knowledgeable guide who was able to help me spot well hidden animals. Knowing each animals story made the visist even better. Learning about their conservation efforts through the visist gave me more insight as well. AND I got to feed Twix the porcupine! I cannot recommend this center enough. I highly recommend a tour- it gives you so much more insight to how this center is helping not only their animals, but the Wood Bison population in Alaska.
Harlow B — Google review
Very nice visit, the park can be walked as well as driven. Though walking offers a much better chance to see the animals. We were very lucky and saw both black bears within two hours of our arrival. (The walking route when done fully and slower to watch for the animals takes about an hour and 45 minutes).
Ellen R — Google review
This is *always* a highlight for my guests on-tour in Alaska. The day we went, the weather was perfect ❤️ We even caught a brief, daily talk @ the bear enclosure. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of zoos BUT this isn’t that…at all. This is a non-profit—a sanctuary—that takes in injured & orphaned Alaskan animals. To read some of the animals stories and how they ended up here is heart wrenching—but I’m happy this place exists. Thank you for caring for these amazing animals ☺️

The Alyeska Aerial Tram offers year-round cable car services to an observation deck at 2,300 feet, providing breathtaking views of glaciers and peaks. In the summer, Girdwood hosts the popular Blueberry Festival in August, offering berry-picking, local food and drinks, as well as hiking and dancing in the peaceful resort town. Located in Girdwood at the base of Mt.
Arrived early and wasn't busy on a Saturday in July. Parking is down the street ~5 minutes walk. Ride in the tram was smooth. Restaurant and museum on the top of the mountain. There is the option to hike down or up, if you want to avoid the $45 ticket. Hike is 2.3 miles and steep in places, but oh so beautiful!
Tibor T — Google review
Hiked up and got a free ride down. The 2000 foot elevation gain is no joke. Took me 2 hours to go 2 miles but so glad I did it. Awesome views, picked salmon berries for the first time, lunch was delicious and the ride down in the tram delightful. We even saw a wedding party going to the top. Would have preferred no rain but didn’t let that stop us. Bucket list checked✔️

Gorgeous views from top of mtn. Tram was fun. Expensive rode to the top. Trail at the top tp the suspended bridges were closed. Nice staff. Spectacular views. Great trails. Save 5.00 per ticket if purchased online.

The Alyeska Aerial Tram is a fantastic experience. The views on the way up and at the top are unbelievable! It was $78 for 2 as hotel guests. We rode the tram up and hiked the way back down. We couldn't recommend this experience highly enough. It was well worth the price of admission.

Beautiful scenery. Breathtaking views. Not a lot of people for as busy as it was. Lots of trails to hike. Lots of food options. Awesome little gift shop. Definitely do the done and ride option as you get more money to spend at the food places.

While this was an awesome experience and the Roundhouse museum was neat I'm not sure we got our money's worth with the tram. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend the tram for small children or family members with limited mobility. It's about a 4-5 minute ride up it's not shaky or wobbly except at one spot and the staff warn you. The views are amazing! But I got some pretty amazing views at state parks for $5, too.

Worth every dollar! Views are unparalleled with mountains, glaciers and lakes. We lucked out with low traffic and high visibility day!

The Reindeer Farm offers an unforgettable experience with Alaskan animals, particularly reindeer. Visitors can pet and feed these gentle creatures, as well as enjoy interactions with elk, moose, and bison. The farm also provides opportunities for horseback riding and winter sled rides. Guests appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained animals, and picturesque location. It's a perfect destination for families or solo travelers looking to connect with nature and wildlife in Alaska.
2 adults and we had some free time and this place sounded interesting. We really couldn’t tell if it was aimed at children or adults but took a chance anyway. We had a great time. We got to see a variety of animals and the staff was very helpful. Feeding the reindeer, buffalo, alpaca and moose were loads of fun. There is a section with kid activities we avoided but even their petting zoo area was adult worthy.

We had a ton of fun at the Reindeer Farm! The kids loved petting the baby reindeer, bunnies, and alpacas. Feeding the moose and bison was also a huge highlight. The staff is very knowledgeable and kind. I would highly recommend visiting this farm if you have time near Palmer.

I can't recommend a stop here enough on your Alaska adventure! This was a real highlight of the trip, and getting to feed real reindeer and moose was so much fun! The animals are so cute and friendly, and the tour guides were helpful and knowledgable.

We had an incredible day at the reindeer farm. I loved our tour guide and her love and knowledge of the animals. My kids played for a long time after the tour and we had such a happy time as a family. Thank you for providing a beautiful place to create memories!

Fun place to take the whole family. Not overly priced for entry. Lots to see. Places for kids to play after walking around for a couple of hours. There is even a reptile exhibit. Animals range from moose, elk, musk ox, etc. A lot of furry four legged animals to see here. There are even caribou antlers for sale! Kids can feed the reindeer and enjoy some hotdogs! Nice coffee shop inside the barn. Totally recommend this as a trip for the family, especially when visitors from out of state come to visit. All of the staff is super friendly.

Totally worth the buzz. So much to see and do. Located at the base of some huge mountains, you can’t go wrong. We saw a golden eagle flying to its nest on the mountain ledge. We were able to pet animals and feed them. So much fun!

Outdoor Activities
Nestled within the Chugach State Park, Eagle River Nature Center is a haven for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Originally established by volunteers in the original Visitors Center, this center offers educational outdoor recreational opportunities and promotes environmental conservation. The picturesque mountain setting is home to a network of hiking trails that lead through stunning landscapes. Just a short drive from Anchorage, visitors can enjoy wildlife viewing and educational programs about the local flora and fauna.
What a fantastic place to find on vacation! We were just looking for a scenic lookout to see the mountains and the road ended into the nature center so we decided to have a look around. The staff inside the center were all super-friendly and took the time to listen to our stories and tell their own and recommended a trail based on what we told them. A quarter mile up the trail from the nature center we came to an overlook looking over the river/marsh and there was a huge bull moose in the water munching away on whatever it could dredge up from the water. The scenery is beautiful (even without the moose). Picturesque mountains, a beaver dam, and lush forests made our hike incredible. Everything was impeccably maintained; the nature center, both boardwalks we encountered, and the trails were all perfect. And then, to top it off, our son accidentally left his favorite sweatshirt behind on one of the boardwalks when we continued our hike. We left and didn't notice it was gone. We came back 4 hours later hoping someone turned it in at the nature center. No one had so I took a quick re-hike to retrace our steps. The sweatshirt was exactly where he had left it; no one had touched it the whole time we were gone. Super-cool place and great views. Would hike again!

What an absolutely beautiful little Nature Center. Enjoy the manicure Trail. At the time of our visit the longer path was closed due to bear activity and the Salmon Run. The Beaver Pond The Overlook. The interesting Visitor Center made for a great visit. They have a few different hiking trails you can walk. The trails and very well marked making planing your hike a breeze. We really enjoyed our visit to the Eagle River Nature Center

I love this nature center! It’s a great place to walk your dog and bask in the sun while enjoying some fresh air and great views. The trails are constantly updated and maintained.

This place is a great destination for outdoor lovers, wildlife viewers, adventure seekers, hikers, campers, or even dog mushers. Small fee to park or you can buy the annual pass. Small animal exhibit inside with some souvenirs and snacks. Take the trails that lead you into the nature center but bring bear bells, bear spray, and a 10mm or higher. During the salmon runs you can run into brown bears. Be sure to check the recent bear activity signs before heading in. They update the signs for trail closures as well. The staff love their jobs and are very friendly. There are tons of programs for kids and lots of events here. Don’t miss out!

Eagle River Nature Center was a fun hike. We wanted to do Albert Loop and Rodak Trail but these were closed because of the Salmon and Bear. The one trail open was Iditarod which led down to Rapids Campsite and a peek at the water. At this point there is a small hidden path up to a bench and lookout with 360 degree view.

The Eagle River Nature Center is an amazing spot to visit outside Anchorage. It was our first proper stop on a long road trip across the state and what an incredible introduction to the beauty of Alaska! We arrived shortly before opening but the trails are still accessible and especially quiet at the time in the morning. As we were leaving, we received some very helpful advice from the couple at the welcome desk (including some further hiking suggestions). Highly recommended as a place to go exploring in the outdoors!

Independence Mine State Historical Park Visitor Center is a captivating destination that transports visitors back to the gold mining era of the early 20th century. Nestled in the stunning Matanuska Valley, this historical site features well-preserved buildings, including an old dining hall and administrative structures, offering a fascinating insight into the lives of miners and their families.
Amazing stop. Great history behind this place. Has great views of the hatchers pass and the valley. We'll maintained property and lots of historical artifacts. They had different mining equipments on display and lot of placards to explain how the whole process looked like. We loved the main house and the old pics for comparison showed how it has changed over years. Lots of parking available and Restrooms were in great condition too. There's a gift shop too.

Very cool place if you like historic things, geology or even just nature. Everything looks like it was just left and abandoned except for the visitor center and a few displays. I went on a Tuesday so it wasn't very crowded. Also, there are many trails at the site and around the area. The main path around the majority of buildings is paved and easy to walk.

Independence Mine State Historical Park is such a fascinating place to visit. The old gold mining camp gives you a glimpse into Alaska’s past, with historic buildings and breathtaking mountain views all around. Last night, we drove up near the park to an open area and watched the northern lights. It was absolutely magical—the quiet of the mountains, the cool night air, and the auroras dancing across the sky made the whole experience unforgettable.
Cris H — Google review
Great experience here in Hatchers Pass! They’ve many wonderful trails to explore and a lot of information to learn about the history of the area. We were really impressed! We hiked about 2 miles is all, but got in a decent workout thanks to the ascent. The lake was a beautiful end to our exploring - and still had ice on it in some spots! No bears spotted - but someone had earlier that week. $5 parking and plenty of it.
Sondra M — Google review
First of all Alaska state parks are amazing at $5 daily day pass in 2025. This site is incredible. So many different trails for different ability levels. My husband and son did a super challenging loop up to a lake. My mother in law and I walked maintained paths around the mine site. There were tons of families with strollers and every age child imaginable. Next the tour in bunk house 2 run by Salmon Berry is so worth it($15/adult but ask for different discounts kids, military, veteran, senior citizens) You get access into locked buildings. The site just received grants for renovations so some buildings are still closed. The tour is roughly an hour every hour.
Mallory C — Google review
Took my doggos for doggos adventure day. It was a Tuesday so not too many people. We had a good walk and wore them out. The trail is well worn and followable. A few slippery spots, but with good tread on your shoes, you should be fine. The view is always gorgeous, we just happened to pick a perfect day for it!
Tama W — Google review
We had the BEST time here! My husband had really wanted to see an old mine town on our trip and the Independence Mine had it all. They have a mine shaft you can view the entrance of and you are able to walk around the whole town. They have done a great job with putting information out of each of the buildings and areas around the site so you can learn more about what everything was used for and how the operation worked as well as the people who lived and worked there. When we were there, 2 buildings were open. The mine manager’s house and bunk house 2. Both of these had exhibits inside. We also went when there was still a bunch of snow at the top. We didn’t know this would be the case, but luckily we had our water proof hiking boots with us so we were still able to explore pretty comfortably. Don’t be like us though, check the weather before heading up the mountain. There might be snow even if it’s June! There are 2 public restrooms available in the parking area. They are your standard park restrooms and there is no sink, so bring your hand sanitizer. There is $5 parking fee. I’m not sure what the gift shop hours are but they do have snacks and drinks (like hot coco) incase you’d like something while you’re up there.

The Iditarod Trail Headquarters, located in a log cabin, is a museum dedicated to the famous dog sled race known as The Iditarod. Since 1973, elite teams have raced on a 1,100-mile route from Anchorage to Nome every March. The museum features trophies, photos, and videos of dog sledding along with exhibits showcasing the race's history.
Very cool! Great museum with trophies and stories of the race over the years. The ride with Riley Dyche and the dogs was the highlight for sure… Amazing how much power he was getting out of eight frisky dogs! 😁

This was a great stop. They have a wonderful museum and you can see some of the trophies. There is also a movie that you can see. The dogs were not available since the weather was really rainy. They also have a nice gift shop.

We stopped by today for the summer sled dog cart rides with Riley Dyche. The dogs were so sweet and it was a lot of fun watching them run. They got really excited when they saw the cart come out. This is a great activity if you’re in the area looking for something to do. There weren’t many people when we went so we didn’t have to wait long at all. We went into the gift shop and visitor’s center after the cart ride and had fun looking around. They even have a 30 minute video option if you have time to sit down and learn all about the Iditarod.
Kaylyn M — Google review
We were very excited to go there. We saw the dogs leave pulling a cart with a couple in it. They came back in less than 5 minutes. Short ride. In the mean time we asked if we could pet the dogs and the wander was: "If you're not going to get a ride you can't pet them" Fair bit rude and money driven. We headed to the sort of museum, and yeah you can find some artefacts. They play a 30 minute movie which you can buy in CD format. It is mainly a shop with souvenirs with a small room with seats for the video.
Karolina — Google review
Its a lovely place to interact with the huskies. The merch store is also great and the museum is great to get an understanding of the history. You can get a husky drawn sledge ride ( even in summer ).

We went in June, and we got to go on a short ride with the dogs, mashed by Riley. We watched a video and were lucky to be there on the day they were signing up mushers for next year's race and met the reigning champion. The gift shop was great and we got a book with great information regarding the Iditarod.
Terri S — Google review
Great info and memorabilia about the mushers and dogs. Got to meet a musher and his sled dogs who have raced in Iditarod multiple times. Top Ten finishers. Come later in the day after the cruise ship tour busses have left.
