Great place to learn about Montana history! Well worth the visit to one of the oldest cities in the state. And a massive gun museum. All artifacts were donated by the locals. Save a few hours for this visit! Oh, and check out the white bat! No worries, it’s caged up.

This is a great museum! Tons and tons of cool antiques and memories! We enjoyed visiting and reading so much history about the R and R! I wish we lived closer so I could volunteer here! Please go visit them and help them out! We loved it. If we are ever by here again we will stop again! Their gun collection is phenomenal!

Wonderful! We heard some about it but it greatly exceeded our expectations. It gives a good sense of what area was like in pioneer days. Too much really for one take-in. We'll go back on our next visit ti Miles City.

Makoshika State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Large state park featuring badlands, dinosaur fossils, a campground & visitor center.
This is a beautiful state park with inspirational vistas. We arrived on a Tuesday in June for a one night stay on our way to Glacier National Park. We camped in site 9, with close proximity to the vault toilet, trash, recycling, and water. The pads are level making it easy to back in and set up. The campsites all provide wonderful views of the colorful rock formations. There are many hiking trails throughout the park providing ample opportunities to experience the environment up close and personal. There is a beautiful amphitheater tucked into the hillside with awesome views. The experience would be improved if the trailheads were marked with the hiking distances.
Jim C — Google review
We were looking for a campground to stay at on our way to Glacier. We decided to reserve a site here instead of theodore roosevelt because it looked nicer than the campgrounds there. While the main campground was a little cramped, we decided to exchange it for a campsite in the "pine on rocks" campground, which are first come first serve. Can't recommend it enough if you're just tent camping. Don't try and go up there with a R.V. But in a tent, Pine on rocks can't be beat. Views were incredible. Did a few trails and loved them. The Kinney Coulee trail was our favorite. So many unique rock formations. A very nice park for star gazing as well. Check out the visitor center to see dinosaur bones. They have a fantastic display. We loved our stay and will go back in a heartbeat!
Will L — Google review
Stunning vistas and lots of really cool, unique rock formations. It's crazy to me that the back half of the scenic drive isn't paved though, including getting to the most popular trail in the park. It was okay in my Civic, but the park seems a little bit neglected for how beautiful and important it is. Had some issues with poor trail markers in Kinney Coulee trail. Otherwise, phenomenally gorgeous.
Kevan I — Google review
First off, motorcyclists be aware that once you enter the park and get maybe 1-2 miles down the road that weaves through the park, the pavement abruptly ends towards the top of a hill. There is a sign that indicates the pavement ends and when it does, it turns to dirt and what I consider to be relatively loose gravel. I ended up turning around simply because I didn't feel comfortable riding on it - your experience may be different depending upon your bike and skill level. The road itself that runs through the park is not maintained very well either. People were openly running and walking right in the middle of the two lanes that loop through the park in either direction since, apparently, there aren't paths that connect the various trails running through the park. Given there are a few steep inclines and near blind curves on a few parts of the road, I don't think it's healthy to have your visitors walking in the middle of the road intended for vehicle traffic. Now, this may have been more the fault of the people who saw fit to walk in the middle of the road more than the park itself, but still. Upon arriving at the entrance, there is a sign that says to pay inside the visitor center, but there was nothing indicating that it's free for Montana residents. When I stopped inside to double check, there was no one at the front desk and there were several other people wandering around trying to find an employee as well. I wandered around the inside of the center to see the various exhibits for about 20 minutes and by time I was done, an employee had shown up at the desk. I asked about the fee and was told so long as I had Montana tags, I was good to go - not that anyone was actually enforcing this in the park anyway. There doesn't appear to be anything stopping out of towners from simply driving into the park without paying the fee except the honor system. The visitor center is nice enough with some exhibits and a small gift shop, but I found it to be lacking in basic amenities like a decent restroom - restroom only had one toilet and if occupied, you would have to wait or use one of the vault toilets inside the park. I'd be interested in coming back here to do some hiking, but that would be the only thing bringing me back. The park is pretty enough, but it's nothing you can't already see in the surrounding area. I suppose if you were visiting here from out of town, you might have a different experience.
Donny H — Google review
What a fascinating place! The topography is badland-esque. Triceratops and T-Rex remains have been found here. Be sure to check out the Visitor Center and to take the scenic drive up to amazing view points. We camped in Site 12. It was a little tight for our 35 foot Class A but there was only one other camper in our loop. Potable water was available as were vault toilets. The night sky is breathtaking here.
Susie S — Google review
Fantastic place! The staff was excellent. The audio tape tour was so informative, nice voices too. We asked for the tour of the lab, as the audio tour suggested we do. It was so interesting! The guide was both a ranger and an educated Paleontologist. He was full of information but also unafraid to say I don't know. Yeah, he didn't tell you things that weren't true.
Marilyn D — Google review
This is an amazing State Park facility! Super close to the town of Glendive and easily accessible from I94. Our car blew up on the interstate as we were making our way to Yellowstone. We were absolutely delighted to find this park which served as our alternative to Yellowstone. The visitors center is nicely laid out with a variety of displays and a small retail store. It is staffed by a ranger. Bonus: 50cent penny smasher!! There is a self serve option for registering and paying to get in. If you are broke or on a budget, it does seem possible to visit without paying. I am not recommending that at all, but I do know that life can be tough sometimes and this place appeared accessible. The views off of the paved and dirt roads were significant and delightful. It’s possible to feel quite alone and wild without traveling all too far. It was sparsely populated, and we felt like we were the only people there during most of our visit. We hiked a few trails. They were rugged and wild, but marked enough with arrow posts that we never felt lost. We quickly found ourselves in valleys and peaks, of badlands and even Grand Canyon quality (not quite the scale, but certainly the color and wildlife). There are extensive disc golfing opportunities, which made me sad I didn’t have equipment. The visitors center did have a very nice selection of discs for purchase. Since our car blew up, we had to walk from town. It’s just a little over a mile from the center of town. There is a taxi service (Henderson, highly recommended) that can pickup/deliver to the park as well.
A E — Google review
When we drove in, there was an office building, rest rooms . We got there when it was closed. At the end of the buildings & and structures, there is a place to take an envelope and insert 4$ per person, and get your park sticker. There is a camping area. It also has an outhouse (restroom with no plumbing. ) Some walking trails and beautiful scenery. It's a long, beautiful drive through the park, with many opportunities to get out, take pictures, or hike. I would not advise allowing children to go ahead ! I would not hike here with small children!

Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Fur-trading post from the 1800s, offering ranger classes, a bookstore & American-Indian artifacts.
What a neat piece of history tucked away on the plains and the Missouri River. It’s pretty small, but easy to walk the grounds and is packed with facts and relics. The rangers took the time to explain the way of life to the kids and they had fun trading items.
C J — Google review
This is a free place to visit, and it is a cool little spot to check out. It is fairly sparse but gives a nice taste of what life in and around the trading post must have been like. Cute little museum inside. I would have loved to have seen the "second floor" but it was closed for safety purposes.
Kristie M — Google review
Visited on 7.14.2025. It is a Free national monument and museum, and there is plenty of history about the Fur Trade. The grounds are open for self guided tours. I appreciated talking with Salina about Maine and other states full of adventure! Definitely recommend visiting if you are in the area.
Rick W — Google review
Visited Fort Union on 6/22/2024. Had a great time! The rendezvous was happening, so there were people dressed in period attire and they were giving demonstrations. It was worth the drive out there to walk around and learn about the history of the area.
Matt M — Google review
Interesting info. Very remote. Had an interesting chat with "local" mountain men reinactors. If you are interested in trade and early interactions between whites and native Americans, and you're nearby, well worth the visit.
Terrence B — Google review
Beautiful place but what really made it awesome was the guys who was doing reenacting that got stuck there another day because of rain. We sat down with them for a while talking. They are canoing down the river and doing everything like back in them days. It was so awesome. They was very knowledgeable and we could sit and talk for hrs. I think people would be more interested in learning about the history with things like this going on.. to me it made the whole experience come alive. Thank you to the 3 gentleman that talked with us and made the experience more alive.
Leanne L — Google review
Very interesting recreational of the trading post that was here. You really get a sense of how many people came through here and how important it was to the area.

Medora Musical

10 lists

Live music venue
Concerts & Shows
The Medora Musical is a beloved summer attraction at the Burning Hills Theater, offering an outdoor extravaganza that celebrates the Western heritage and Theodore Roosevelt. Since its debut in 1965, this country western variety show has been entertaining audiences with singing, dancing, and a reenactment of Roosevelt's charge during the battle of Big San Juan Hill. The performance culminates in a spectacular fireworks finale. Visitors can also opt for a behind-the-scenes tour for an additional fee.
Highly recommend to take time and see the show. Performers and band are wonderful. The variety act was great too. Show is 2 hours long with an intermission. They invite the little ones on stage. So cute. We were in section 4 row G. Perfect location to see all the action on stage. There is an elevator or walkway to the mezzanine level. If you don’t want to or can’t take stairs, I recommend the upper level. There are several stairs to get where we sat. When the show is over they dismiss by row. This was so nice and controlled the vehicles exiting.
Debby B — Google review
The musical was absolutely amazing in an outdoor setting. Due to smoke from the Canadian fires, they had to shorten their performance. But it was still enjoyable. The horses we're incredible in their performance. Highly recommend. The town of Medora is very convenient to the south entrance of Theodore Roosevelt's National Park.
Marlene D — Google review
We caught the last show of the season. The set was neat. You could see a lot of work was put into making it what it is. The kids portion was awkward and uncomfortable. They taught the kids how to sign This Little Light of Mine. Didn't know I was going to church too. And the mascots were staring at the adult audience the entire time. Just, why? Seemed creepy and just odd. The cover songs for the rest of the show were entertaining enough. The buildings moving and the horses added absolutely nothing to the show and seemed more effort than they were worth. The act after the intermission was promising. Started out great, but then the rest of the show got rained out. It was an experience for sure, but not the sort of thing I would recommend to anyone traveling out that way.
Glorkar F — Google review
This is one of the best, if not the best shows we have seen. We highly recommend going. We have met families that this is an annual event. The show has been going on for 60 years.
Brian F — Google review
We all loved the Medora Musical. All of the staff was welcoming from the moment we arrived until we left. Great views of the show from our seats. It kept our attention the entire way through. It was well worth it and we’re glad we went!
Stephanie B — Google review
Through a communication error, we bought tickets for two separate nights. We enjoyed the first show so much that we decided to experience the show again on the following evening. The performances were professionally performed and produced in a way that was both patriotic and spiritual. The steak dinner was passable, but the Musical was exceptional. The views surrounding the stage area are beautiful. You can't do much better than a day driving the Theodore Roosevelt South Unit loop, and an evening enjoying the Medora Musical.
Dave M — Google review
First time going to the musical. I felt the second half was better than the first. Beautiful facility and landscape. We used a shuttle from our hotel, but it probably wasn't necessary, as it was easy to find and parking looked ample.
Laura B — Google review
This was THE BEST way to finish out our Fourth of July celebration in Medora. All I can say is get your friends and family and GO!! The musical is different every year and they knocked it out of the park this year, the 60th Anniversary of Medora musical. Talent all around and so well organized. They even had a spot for kids that was so special, the environment was laid back and family oriented. The weather was perfect (it’s an outdoor venue)! Just go, it was fabulous!!

Theodore Roosevelt National Park

National park
Nature & Parks
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a picturesque landscape where bison, elk, and deer freely roam amidst stunning buttes and rugged badlands. This park holds great significance as it was a place close to the heart of the 26th President of the United States. Theodore Roosevelt found solace in North Dakota's ruggedness and freedom during his bison hunting trip in 1883, eventually leading him to purchase land and spend considerable time there.
This place was great enjoyed seeing the wild horses, buffalo, and prairie dogs and also saw a few deer. I had gotten stuck sitting with buffalo all around my vehicle they were blocking the road it was great. There is also so many trails to go for a hike. It was just beautiful will definitely go back.
CBU — Google review
So enjoyed camping in this state park. Nice new restrooms. Lots of wildlife. Excited to find the horses on the mountain side. The hike to the peak above the valley was awe inspiring. The pitchfork steak dinner was delicious and the buffet offered so many choices.
Cindra D — Google review
Theodore Roosevelt NP was my very first experience with a national park. We visited in mid-October, which proved to be a pretty “quiet” time to visit. On drive into the park, we were lucky enough to see a large herd of bison on one side of the road and an entire band of 15 or so wild horses on the other, with prairie dogs scattered throughout. We chose to camp at the Cottonwood campsite. The night we set up our camp, a herd of bison walked through before heading down the valley towards the river. If you want to experience wildlife up close (SAFELY), this is an excellent spot. Unfortunately we visited during the government shutdown, meaning there were no rangers present in the park. Despite this, the park was still very clean and well-maintained. The scenic drive loop was closed for renovations to the road, but most of it was still accessible. The campsite featured drive-in spots (for RVs, but cars can also park here) as well as back-in spots. The back-in spots have better views of the natural landscape, in my opinion. We had no issues showing up without any reservations and finding a site.
Sydney W — Google review
Cool little park. Not great in terms of scenery, but great for wildlife. Lots of bison, prairie dogs and birds, but the Showstopper of course were the wild horses! Colorful, majestic and mesmerizing! Definitely worth a trio just to see those!
Ali A — Google review
Only had a few hours before dark here and it was worth it. So quiet. The quiet here is what made it worth it to me. The diverse landscape was something we don’t have back east so it was really nice to see. I was able to see many Bison, couple coyotes, more prairie dogs than I have ever seen in one location, some doe mule deer. Right at dark I was hearing elk bugle. Make the short hike up Buck hill as the view was really worth it. There was almost nobody here. Would I plan an entire vacation to come here, and only go to the park, no. Adding horse back trail riding in the area would really make it worth it to come here. Would I stop again if driving through YES. Super happy I was able to see the northern light just outside of town on the drive. Subscribe to see us @weaversstonehousefarm on the YouTube
Aaron W — Google review
Stayed 3 nights in the campground and enjoyed this park and also the northern unit. Just be aware the drive to the north unit is quite long. We enjoyed going out in the evening and enjoyed seeing all the animals. Great campground but beware of the crowds. We went early June and had crowds.
Ron N — Google review
Nestled in the North Dakota badlands, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a delightful surprise that offers a harmonious blend of rugged beauty and serene tranquility. As you explore its vast landscapes, you’ll find yourself captivated by the park’s ever-growing allure. The park boasts breathtaking views, including layered buttes, vibrant rock formations, and winding rivers that shimmer beautifully at sunrise and sunset. Unlike many crowded national parks, Theodore Roosevelt National Park provides a more intimate and peaceful experience. With ample space, you can immerse yourself in the landscape without the distractions of rushing crowds. Wildlife thrives throughout the park, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Bison roam freely near the roads, while spotting wild horses is an enchanting experience. Prairie dogs create entire “towns” and chirp cheerfully as you pass by. Driving the scenic loop feels like embarking on a safari, offering a unique and immersive wildlife encounter. Hiking in Theodore Roosevelt National Park is both rewarding and accessible. Trails like the Painted Canyon, Buck Hill, and Wind Canyon offer sweeping vistas with relatively easy access. For those seeking a more adventurous experience, longer routes allow you to venture deeper into the badlands, exploring its diverse terrain. Each of the park’s three units—South, North, and Elkhorn Ranch—offers its own distinct charm, and exploring multiple units provides a comprehensive understanding of the park’s rich diversity. Overall, Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a peaceful, beautiful, and surprisingly wild destination. It invites reflection and offers a genuine connection with nature, much like it did for Theodore Roosevelt himself. With its vast scenery, abundant wildlife, and off-the-beaten-path experience, it’s an ideal choice for those seeking a truly memorable national park adventure.

This is a fantastic example of a National Park. Scenic drives. Great views. A wide selection of trails of varying length and difficulty. It may be in the middle of next to nowhere, but it's well worth the trip.

North Unit Visitor Center

National Parks
The North Unit Visitor Center is the lesser-known but equally captivating part of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, located 70 miles north of Highway 85. This remote area boasts dramatic Badlands with a mountainous feel and two famous overlooks, Riverbend and Oxbow, offering solitude and stunning views. Home to a Bison herd and Longhorn cattle, this area near the Canadian border also features cabins for rent, making it an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in nature.
The North Unit is much smaller and more remote than the South but do not miss out on going to the North Unit of the park! Such a nice place. The Rangers working this Unit were very nice and informative. There is a very small selection of gift shop items here. But we found what we needed. There are toilets at this visitor center (most of the park has drop toilets). Also, do not forget to pack snacks/lunch if you come this way as there is nowhere to buy food.
Maura L — Google review
What was nice in the North unit was that I saw a Buffalo heard as opposed to just some individual Bison in the south unit. Staff at the visitors center was helpful but be prepared to ask some questions. Scenery in both North and South are similar but perhaps better in the north. With the current setup, I'm not sure anyone would have known I paid in the North unit.
Trypp A — Google review
You must see the northern unit of the park. I totally missed it the last time I visited the south unit. The wildlife and scenery is top notch. Highly recommend the prairie dog town hike. We saw many bison and prairie dogs on the trail, and even birds and lizards. Incredible views!
Becky E — Google review
The open hours for the visitor center are in Mountain Time. We like the north unit better than the south unit. Less people and more beautiful. There are really cool overlooks and a couple of short trails. Recommend the 1h drive from the south to at least stop at the overlooks.
Ana M — Google review
We stopped at both entrances and visitors centers at Theodore Roosevelt NP. The north entrance is smaller and more remote. My kids and I are collecting stamps in our NP passport book. We also wanted to see the wildlife. Bathrooms are in a trailer outside. Rangers were fairly helpful in what we should see. My kids loved seeing the prairie dog towns.
Jill H — Google review
In August 2025, we visited the North Unit Visitor's Center at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota. In the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, there is a North Unit and a South Unit, and each Unit has their own Visitor's Center. In the North Unit, there is a 14 mile drive with several scenic spots, such as Cannonball, River Bend Overlook, and Ox Bow Overlook. We loved the scenery as we stopped at these different places on the 14 mile drive. Theodore Roosevelt National Park is amazing and memorable.
John C — Google review
The North Unit Visitor Center is very small but does have a small interpretive area, restrooms, water, and rangers available to answer your questions or to recommend short hikes. The scenic drive is beautiful and will likely provide the opportunity to see the buffalo.
Dawn J — Google review
Seen tons of buffalo with their babies, was disappointed that we didn't see any big horn sheep, they talk in the brochure like there's quite a few but we didn't have any luck. The landscape is just beautiful and cannonball rock formations are really cool, on the way back the bison was using one of them for a back scratcher😂

Such a fantastic place to visit. Unfortunately wasn't able to see the inside of any of the buildings but just walking around the park was great. Worth stopping to see

Beautiful park, really neat house with Scandinavian artifacts and antiques from the old country. Tools the used and travelled with will blow you away. Truly remarkable ancestors we had. The church was breathtaking and the houses that were built in the 1700's and brought over from Norway were neat. Life size wooden trolls and a gift shop with scandi art and jewelry I loved this place and felt at home

Gol Stave Church was the perfect venue for our wedding! Nice that we didn't have to decorate the church as we let the ornate woodwork speak for itself. The volunteers were so helpful and friendly. The park/grounds lent to gorgeous wedding photos after the ceremony. Thank you again!

What's not to love?! Everything is free unless you want to buy things at the shop. My favorites are the stave church and the "tiny homes." No wonder I'm obsessed with tiny homes--it's in my blood! Came back later in the day with my Norwegian family to have a picnic supper.

It's a pretty place. I expected to for them to have more to see. The church is beautiful. The heritage house was fun to go through.

Zoos & Aquariums
Roosevelt Park Zoo, established in 1921, is North Dakota's oldest zoo and home to a diverse range of animals including big cats, bears, bison, river otters, reptiles, and birds. The zoo has steadily grown since its humble beginnings with just a male bison from Montana. Despite setbacks like the floods in 2011, the zoo has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
A reasonable size of local zoo in Minot where you can spend your time with your loved ones. Currently the zoo is under construction so you’re not able to see some animals and feed goats, sheep, and chickens. However, they recently open giraffe area. They are continuously developing zoo environment, so the visitors can still enjoy to see animal lives. Zoo also provide many different kinds of programs for kids so is good to check out for the children to have fun.
Stacy K — Google review
The staff is so welcoming and friendly. We absolutely loved the tigers and cubs! Such a beautiful zoo and so easy to get around to all of the animals. We will definitely be back.
Laura W — Google review
It's not a really big zoo, but they have all types of wild animals that we learned about as kids, like lions, tigers, bears, giraffes, etc. 🦁🐅🐻🦒 It's an excellent place to take your kids for an introduction to animals. They have a few birds as well. 🐦 The real surprise was the okapi. I have been to many zoos in different countries, and this one was a real surprise. That's not a common animal in zoos. 😲 It was under construction when I visited, but it was still maintained well. The staff was polite, and the ambience was nice. 😊 I will recommend it to anyone who visits Minot. I hope to visit it again once the construction is finished and they have the new addition, a camel 🐪. 👍
Midhun M — Google review
Had such a fun time. Recently moved up here and wanted to see the zoo. I was not disappointed, absolutely beautiful tigers, majestic lions, big tall giraffes, penguins, monkeys.....and for 7 bucks right now?????? Definitely worth the trip. Fun lottle train rides for kids too.

Cannot wait until the construction is done! Even with the construction this cute little zoo truly exceeded all my expectations- beautiful exhibits! Amazing animals and all so well cared for!! A must see when visiting your MSU students for sure!!! So much fun!!

Even though we visited during some major construction, we LOVED this zoo. We did the Okapi Encounter and my daughter got to interact with her favorite animal. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable. All around a great experience

The Roosevelt Park Zoo has always been one of our favorite places to walk and spend time together. Unfortunately, during our recent visit, half of the zoo was closed due to construction of new spaces. Even so, we enjoyed our time there as always—the atmosphere is peaceful, the animals we saw were well cared for, and it’s a great place for families. We’re excited to come back once the new areas are finished—it will definitely make the zoo even better! ✨ Still one of Minot’s gems for a family day out.

An awesome and interactive zoo in Minot, North Dakota. The Roosevelt Park Zoo has unique animals like giraffes (which you can feed 🙂), red pandas, and an okapi. It also offers an immersive experience where you are close to the animals, like the tigers, and feel like you are in their environment. They also offer a fun train ride experience around the zoo where you can learn facts about the animals. I highly recommend traveling to Minot, North Dakota, to check out this zoo.

Greta rest area. Closed at the time I was there. Great spot overall and free electric charging for those of us without exhausts!

Very unique rest stop in North Dakota. Unfortunately, I did not have time to go through the museum, but after talking to one of the employees, it sounds like there is a lot to see not only from the Lewis and Clark expedition, but also about Native American agriculture and information about the nearby fort. Very nice gift shop and I was also able to send my postcards right from the gift shop. Absolutely gorgeous restrooms as well very clean and tidy. Nice place to stop and have a picnic on your way through.

It was a great experience. When I walked in the worker guy greeted me. He gave me a lot of information and explained things to me before I started walking around the center. He was very knowledgeable. He also informed me of the next tour at Fort Mandan which was great as well and the lady there who was 17 (she said she was going to be a senior in high school this fall) and did the tour was very knowledgeable and nice. Great experience. Would highly recommend!
Markki L — Google review
The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center is both a wonderful rest stop and museum. The admission fee for the museum includes admission to Fort Mandan as well. The museum provides a good overview of the Lewis and Clark expedition and has a great exhibit on native American history in the area. The parking lot is large enough for RVs and travel trailers. There is a nice gift shop on site as well.

Great rest stop on Hwy 83. Ample parking and clean restrooms open all day. Nice walking path to stretch your legs. They even slip in a little bit of local history about Lewis and Clark.

Excellent exhibits and staff! Jr Ranger Badges were earned too.
Jesi S — Google review
This was a great museum and center not only about Lewis and Clark but also about Native Americans of the area and other early explorers who came afterwards. An awesome collection of 1800's drawings and paintings as well. We spent a couple of hours here, then went to the Fort Mandan afterward for a short guided tour. Both are great.
Ramblin D — Google review
Wonderful museum with two different ways to experience Lewis and Clark history. A modern facility with stunning art pieces and displayed artifacts. The other is a short drive to a full size reproduction of L&Cs encampment. This structure is filled with tons of replica items to touch and feel. Our guide was a chipper young lady named Cameron. Gave a nice presentation, answered questions, and added cute little personal remarks about time period comparisons that made the tour fun.

I haven't been here in a couple of years. Everything has been improved! The otter exhibit was expanded so you can see them swimming in better space. They added 4 great horned owls and a snowy owl. I noticed the zookeepers were taking good care of the animals. The zoo itself is very relaxing & a good place to escape for the day!

The Dakota Zoo is an absolute gem! The diversity of animals is incredible, from majestic big cats and playful bears to exotic birds and reptiles, there’s something fascinating to see at every turn. The grounds are well-kept and easy to navigate, making it a pleasant experience for visitors of all ages. The concessions are great, offering fresh, tasty options at reasonable prices, perfect for a quick snack or lunch break. The highlight for my family was the train ride, which gives a relaxing, scenic tour of the zoo and lets you see the animals from a unique perspective. A fantastic place to spend the day, we’ll definitely be back!

First time visiting this zoo. I had an awesome time, it is Winter so not all animals were on display. The Zoo is definitely worth visiting and very family friendly. I loved being able to pet some animals and the Grizzly bears were amazing! Definitely would visit again!

It was one of the best zoos I have been too. Plenty of space for the animals to roam, healthy animals. Well laid out. I would recommend it too anyone. Gift shop was nice too.

Zoo was clean, trains sparkled. Enjoyed the train ride as it was hot out. The animals weren't active at the time of the day, but saw a few. Loved the floral gardens and fountains.
Sheila H — Google review
Overall the zoo was nice, but some animals like the badgers seem very stressed. It and the bears, wolf paced around in circles constantly. Amazing to have been able to see bald eagles, alligators. The petting zoo is a nice touch to be able to interact with animals. I understand the zoo is in development still, so I look forward to conditions improving.

It was $30 for two of us and $6 popcorn. Every type of animal you would want to see and up close. The penguin exhibit is new and excellent. Lions and tigers and bears oh my. Get ready to walk a lot or you can opt in for the trolley train service where you can ride for free and visit the entire Zoo in Comfort. This Bismarck zoo and the Wahpeton Chahinkapa zoo best in North Dakota.

Took my 3 and 4 yr old granddaughters to the Tremendous Tiger Camp. They loved it! Age appropriate craft project and fun time observing and learning about the tigers. They currently have a cub, Niko, who was born there 6 months ago. We all enjoyed this camp. Their only complaint was with me not planning enough time to see their other favorite animals!

The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum is a treasure trove of history and culture located in Bismarck. This impressive museum invites visitors to explore the rich tapestry of North Dakota's past, showcasing exhibits that span from ancient geological formations to the vibrant cultures of early inhabitants. With its extensive collection of artifacts, specimens, and cutting-edge displays, it provides an engaging experience for all ages.
Had a great experience at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. It’s one of the few free museums around, and it’s definitely worth a visit—whether you’re going solo, with friends, or with family. The lady at the front was incredibly helpful, and we were able to explore everything before our flight home. There’s plenty of parking, it’s in a great location, and while admission is free, they do accept donations. A worthwhile stop if you're in the area.

This is an amazing museum that chronicles the rich history of North Dakota from the time that dinosaurs roamed the earth until the current time. There is an incredible volunteer staff that is friendly and helpful. Admission is free but donations are accepted and appreciated.

Very education with a large breadth of topics. Provided (new to me) context on conditions and life styles of native Americans in the region and their effects on America as a whole. Loved seeing the training equipment of the missile launch. Lots of great fossils, well preserved dinosaur mummy, and rare fossils. Context and comparisons between different sized animals of the same family also provided a perspective I enjoyed.

The North Dakota Heritage Center is a phenomenal state museum in the heart of Bismark near the state capital. The building itself is very open and modern, with spacious halls throughout. Admission is free (although donations are accepted). We visited all three permanent galleries, which covered prehistoric times, early peoples, and the more modern state history. The exhibits are well thought out, with just the right amount of interpretive materials. We especially enjoyed the prehistoric gallery with the dinosaur fossils and prehistoric timeline. There is plenty of parking in two large parking lots located next to the NDHC. We also had a light lunch on site in the El Coqui cafe (wonderful soup and sandwiches) before exploring the gift shop. The NDHC is located near the capital building , making it easy to spend a day on site.

The National Buffalo Museum is a log building showcasing Native American art and artifacts, located within a recreated frontier village. The museum provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the history of bison herds that once roamed the prairies. Additionally, the museum features albino bisons residing in the area. Alongside the museum, the village offers a chance for visitors to explore its pioneer town.
The North American Bison Discovery Center is an awesome place to visit. It's a great place to learn more about the history of buffalo/bison in this country. There are so many people who have worked hard to stabilize the buffalo/bison population. At one time, there were barely 400 left in the U.S.; now there are over 400,000, including some that are on the free range in parks such as Yellowstone. I, for one, am thankful for museums such as this one that serves to educate people and help us to understand the work involved in caring for these animals and maintaining their numbers.

Everything you'd ever like to learn about the American bison, including its anatomy, history, and preservation success story. Includes several full-size bison taxidermy and plenty of hands-on opportunities for children. Great for all ages!

If you are driving across North Dakota on Hwy 94, make sure you stop in Jamestown at the North American Bison Discovery Center. Plan to spend at least an hour in the museum, which has phenomenal exhibits on the prehistoric history of the bison, their almost near extinction at the hands of European settlers in the late 1800s, and the comeback of these phenomenal animals. The museum also has an exhibit describing the relationship between the bison and native Americans. There is a short film which the staff will play upon request, and a gift shop. A small herd is kept in the pasture outside the museum. But may not always be in sight. While stooped here, also visit Frontier Village and the Buffalo Monument at the end of the village.
Dawn J — Google review
This was a very interesting museum. I learned more about the bison. They have a viewing area where you can go outside and see the bison out in the grass area. There is a small gift shop attached. Bathrooms were clean. Staff was very nice. Cost is $8 for adults and $6 for seniors. I don't remember the cost for children. There is minimal RV parking outside the museum.
Donna S — Google review
Watch the 15 min video before looking at exhibits. It adds much more to the exhibits. Great history of the American Bison is presented in a short time. A walk through Frontier Town was very Interesting too.

It's was a great place too visit with your kids and family, and the city of Jamestown it's called Buffalo City, because it's has the biggest buffalo you ever seen...
Danny J — Google review
We stopped here to see the World's Biggest Buffalo (we used to be bison ranchers), and we stayed to take in the old western town and the museum. What an awesome place to explore! It's not too far off the main interstate either. We really enjoyed the museum and we spent way too much money in the gift shop - worth it! Haha. There isn't a ton of sparking on site, but enough, and there were adequate handicap parking spots for us for my Mom. The young ladies running the entry of the museum were absolute sweethearts and super helpful. They packed our breakable items perfectly, and those items made it all the way home to Ontario. If you're looking for somewhere to explore this summer, this would be a great place to start!

This is an amazing park that I would say is a must for families. We came from Wisconsin to enjoy the park and it exceeded expectations! Very clean, lots to see, great experience all around. We were there on a Tuesday and we never waited in line for anything. Lots of places to sit down and just enjoy time with eachother. The theater production in the castle is a excellent show and a must see. We will be back again!!!

This was such an amazing find. I traveled here with my 5 year old daughter for their festival weekend. We spent 2 whole days at the park exploring, playing and participating in the festival activities. We enjoyed the unlimited rides for $15 dollars the first day and then went through a couple punch passes the next. We were so lucky to have met some authors at the event and picked up 2 novels written about storybook land that have become a hit at bed time as we continue to read about all the characters and playground areas we explored. Every person we encountered from waiting in the airport, to our cab and Uber drivers, to parents my daughter played with, and the hotel staff, were all extremely kind and helpful making the whole trip experience a great one.

Storybook Land is such a wonderful place to visit with kids! There are so many play structures and fun to be had. It’s incredible that it’s free to visit and the only thing to pay for is rides if you so choose. We visited on a Saturday with our 13 yr old and 4 yr old and we’ll definitely come back.
Janna R — Google review
Great experience! Our kids loved it. It was very affordable and a great place to get some exercise if Aberdeen is a stopping point on a road trip. If you are really strapped for cash, there are actually more free play equipment parks than rides that cost money.

Storybook Land continues to improve over the years. A recommended stop for those with small children from ages 1-6. There is also an air conditioned nursing station in Santa's House year round for those of nursing age. A cute place for a walk for adults as well, complete with viewing of bison, elk, long horns, and more and petting zoos for the little ones. Inside you will find an air conditioned gift shop, concessions complete with lunch options and cold treats, and bathrooms.

Story Book Land is a oasis of story book characters sprinkled around a vast area of sections in a nice wooded yellow brick s road area. Kids are welcomed by anywhere from the Wizard of Oz to short story characters. There are about 7 rides in total that are fun for all ages. The carousel and twisty rides the kiddos enjoyed. Passes are very reasonable for the ride packs. The park is all donation so a joy for all who visit.

Absolutely wonderful place for family anything, get together, reunions, birthdays, anniversaries, dates, field trips, camping, vacations, for a few hours or perhaps a week . Great location slightly out of town, just a few minutes away. Lots of free stuff to do, plenty to also buy. Right beside a mini golf course, paddle boats fishing and canoes too.

Really one of the best places for kids to run and play...pretty much worry free for parents! So much to see and do for all ages. Lots of swings, play areas, rides (train -that tours the whole park and zoo, carousel for all ages, roller coaster, spinning tea cups) and a great space to let kids run. Landscaping was gorgeous. Always full of well maintained flowers and plants. I love that it is free admission. We visited several times on our last stay. They have an air-conditioned breastfeeding building. Air conditioning in the visitors center too. So much works goes into a place like this. Truly a treasure for Aberdeen! Highly recommend checking it out!

Took the tour and went to two games featuring UND vs Univ of Denver. I highly recommend the tour. You get to see areas you won’t see just going to a game. The highlight is the UND fan base though. WOW!!!! I have heard for years that this place was the Taj Mahal of hockey. It is the finest arena I have ever been to and I've been to a lot. Finally got to a game October 25, 2024. The outside of the building with its red brick design is stunning to see. This red brick thing is big in Grand Forks. The eye candy continues once you get inside. Polished granite floors, Fighting Sioux Logo in the floor and all over the place. UND hockey history all over the place. The gift shop is amazing too. No shortage of food and drink stands. Packed house and never a line more than 3 people deep. Prices fall in line with typical sporting venues. The arena bowl does not have a bad seat to watch from. We were upper deck, row 3 in one of the corners. Great spot to watch a game. My favorite part was the fan experience. 99% of people are in team colors. The atmosphere in there was just electric. The fans take so much pride in their team, the different chants and traditions, which we took part in. It was so much fun. I am one of those guys that love to travel around to different stadiums and arena's. Well this one is must see. 10 STARS on this one. You will not be disappointed.

Took in a tour of the facility - very impressive and great attention to detail. An amazing place for athletes to grow and compete with a rich history and heritage. It was interesting to learn more about the late Ralph Engelstad and his foundation and the generosity and appreciation they display towards this facility, the athletes and the community. As a former long time facility manager, I was also blown away at how meticulously maintained and cared for this facility is. Everyone clearly takes pride in and appreciates what they have. A good example to follow for sure.

We always stop by every visitor's center we can. As soon as we we left the airport we headed over to visit. The staff was friendly, gave wonderful suggestions, and they had tons of brochures, maps, etc. to plan a visit to the area. They also sold all kinds of souvenirs and had tons of options for our favorites - magnets, stickers, postcards, and trinkets unique to the area. A must visit if you are visiting Fargo.

This place was so awesome! It was a hot day so some of the animals were hidden, but once we came back around we were able to see most of them. There is an area where you can pet and feed some animals ($0.25) and in another area you can feed koi fish! Definitely a place to visit and come back year round.

I went to the Red River Zoo on the 20th of June with my Daughter and my Wife. It was a lot of fun! My daughter loved the animals and exhibits. I think the goats and the chickens are her favorites! The carousel was fun for us and the building was a great place to escape the heat and cool off with a soda and some dippin dots. Some of the animals don't look the best but it was nice to get out and see them.

Red River Zoo offers vistors a modest collection of animals and exhibits. Landscaping was very appealing as well as the various exhibit houses. A moderately quick tour took 1.5 hrs. Bring quarters to purchase food for the designated animals. The staff was very friendly and welcoming.

Did not expect North Dakota to be hot but I was wrong. The zoo aside from being hot was really fun in total I saw, porcupines fighting, an ancient fish that looks like a dinosaur, some wolves, a fox, prairie dogs, a weird short horse, a bald eagle, a lynx, a camel, and finally a weird animal that I forgot the name of. I saw a lot of animals which is a win when you go to the zoo. 5 stars :)

Nice place,we were disappointed that the otters were not out in their enclosure. As the same with several others. The Buffalo were very active and fun to watch. The carousel is very nice.

Beautiful Zoo. Fun kids play area. My kids love the carousel! Fun small playground. Great events hosted here. Wish the layout was better, you have to back track a couple times.

Had a wonderful experience at Red River Zoo! Did the red panda encounter where I got to feed Wayland grapes! She was such a sweetheart and I'll never forget it! Marcy and Bernadette were knowledgeable and had so much information about them.

We had a fantastic visit to the Red River Zoo in Fargo with the family, and it completely exceeded our expectations. The zoo is beautifully maintained, not too large or overwhelming, and perfect for a relaxed half-day outing—especially with kids. One of the highlights was seeing the red pandas up close. Elena was absolutely thrilled watching them climb and nap in the trees. We also enjoyed the gray wolves, river otters, and the adorable Pallas cats. The exhibits are thoughtfully designed to mimic natural habitats, and there’s plenty of shaded walking paths, benches, and green space to rest. The children's barn and carousel were big hits with our little one. The zoo staff were kind and informative, often stopping to answer questions and point out animals hiding in their enclosures. We also appreciated the educational signs throughout, which made it easy to learn as we explored. The size of the zoo was perfect for young kids—large enough to feel like an adventure, but small enough to cover in a couple of hours without getting too tired. We wrapped up with a snack near the prairie dogs, who were surprisingly fun to watch. Overall, the Red River Zoo is a hidden gem in Fargo. It’s peaceful, family-friendly, and offers a wonderful variety of animals, many of which are cold-climate species not often seen in other zoos. A must-visit if you're in the area with kids or simply want a calm and charming place to spend the day.

Lake Itasca, located in Itasca State Park, is a serene glacial lake and the primary source of the Mississippi River. Visitors can witness the birth of the mighty river as it flows out of Lake Itasca on its 2552-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. The area around the lake holds cultural significance as it is the traditional home of Dakota and Ojibwe peoples. The park boasts vast pine forests, over 100 lakes, and numerous trails for hiking and biking.
This was one of my favorite places to visit in the state. Everyone has fun walking across the mighty Mississippi River. There is also lots more to see in the state park. Take the long drive for more Minnesota beauty.

Start of Mississippi River. Huge park. Affordable parking. Lots to do and see even if not biking or hiking.
Jodi J — Google review
Exciting to see the beginnings of this mighty river. It doesn't seem so big here. From just a small trickle to a massive river. A must see, make it a point to come here, it's a great experience.
Steve C — Google review
Beautiful stop! The kids, ages 10-14, all had fun walking around and checking out the area.
Amanda M — Google review
Must be on your bucket list. Seeing the end of a journey in New Orleans, meeting of the waters of the OHIO and MISSISSIPPI, the joining of the wide muddy MISSOURI and the mighty MISSISSIPPI, and missing out of seeing the headwaters would be unthinkable. It is worth the trip to the BEGINING.
Ronald W — Google review
WOW! Lucky enough to see this park glowing! They are working on a retention project so we could not get right down by the water but really enjoyed what we could see and hike! Many informative plaques about history, a gift shop, cafe(limited hrs), picnic tables and super clean bathrooms. We drove the wilderness drive and enjoyed nature at its best!! There is a beautiful paved bike trail so we will be returning with our bikes next! Day pass was $7.00 and worth every penny!

Beautiful park and the Headwaters of the Mississippi River. Amazing to be able to walk across this river and then see it elsewhere in the state of Minnesota where it is wide.

State park
Nature & Parks
Itasca State Park, located in northwestern Minnesota, is a vast natural area spanning over 32,000 acres and featuring more than 100 lakes. As the state's oldest park, it is renowned for being the birthplace of the Mississippi River. Visitors can witness the headwaters of this mighty river at Lake Itasca and even walk across its beginnings before it embarks on its 2552-mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico.
This is a great park. It is massive, so have a rough plan if only going for the day. We camped for 5 nights. Wonderful campground. Very well maintained facilities and sites. All staff we encountered (besides one at the camping office) were delightful. The headwaters is a really great area, it is also very crowded at times. Be prepared to encounter a lot of people and families. We were never bored during our stay!
Mike H — Google review
How cool is it to walk across the Mississippi River! The headwaters are in Itasca State Park. There's a wonderful hands-on children's section in nature in one of the visitors' Centers. There are lots of trails to walk, bike or ride. There's even a 100' tower one can climb and look out over the canopy of trees! It's a great park to visit!
Boni M — Google review
I went here to see the Mississippi headwaters and not only did I see it, but the park is an amazingly beautiful even beyond just Lake Itasca. I traveled in the Fall and the colors were stunning. I stayed in a rustic cabin which had a half bath, futon, bed, microwave, kitchen sink and dorm refrigerator. The campgrounds, lodges, gift shops and visitors center were very clean. The one-way drive was beautiful and worth doing after seeing the headwaters. The shower house had great water pressure and clean. I will definitely come again.
Roberta W — Google review
Great state park. Very impressive hiking and biking trail system. The park is huge with tons of lakes, streams, wetlands and forests. The wilderness drive is awesome. Be prepared for mosquitoes... it's Minnesota! If you know, you know! The firepits in the campsites are not very good and the firewood sold at the park is low quality and very expensive. Nice they have a restaurant in the park and extensive gift shop.
Thad D — Google review
Itasca State Park is truly one of the most stunning places I’ve visited in Minnesota. The park is incredibly well-maintained, with miles of scenic trails, pristine lakes, and beautiful forests that offer something for everyone – from casual walkers to serious hikers. Standing at the headwaters of the Mississippi River is a unique experience, and the clarity of the water there is amazing.
Benjin V — Google review
We were on our way back to the Twin Cities from Bemidji, and had never walked across the mouth of the Mississippi river. My wife kept asking me what’s the big deal about walking across the bridge on the Mississippi until we got there and she realized that we were going to be walking across rocks at the mouth of the mighty Mississippi. So literally you walk across the Mississippi on rocks Very cool experience beautiful huge state park lots of great camping spots you could easily spend a weekend in here and never hit all the trails We were here a little past the changing of the leaves, there was still some color and we really enjoyed our short stop at the park and plan on spending more time again
Tom C — Google review
By far my favorite state park yet! It was worth the drive. We loved the paved bike trail right through nature. And the headwaters of the Mississippi was a nice quick stop
Allison C — Google review
Itasca state park is a great place to visit. There are a number of attractions, some are obvious, the headwaters of the Mississippi, and a slice of woods. However, the park is special for its history and biological diversity as well. I’d recommend the headwaters of course, but also try and visit (tour required) the Biological research station, take the walk to the fire tower, and one of the walks where the rangers explain the plants in the park. The campground is nice, although I’d recommend against any site that notes a slope.

Carlos Creek is the perfect place to unwind when we’re up at the lake. The wine, beer and pizza are the perfect combo for a fun night out…oh, but wait…there’s live music and a beautiful property too!

Absolutely amazing. The brewery and winery have amazing selections for all tastes and preferences. Jacks Pub, their outdoor bar, has amazing views of the winery and is aesthetically pleasing. If you aren't sure what you like, the brewtenders are happy to help you find what you like! Not to mention the bingo nights are packed and so much fun! Love coming to Carlos Creek!
Andie F — Google review
The winery is amazing - the food is great. The wine is exactly what you’re looking for. The ambience though - is everything! Only grading 3 stars due to service staff. We had three separate instances where we didn’t feel like guests… more in the way for the staff. At one point my friend tried to point out to an employee that the paper towels were empty in the girls bathroom to be helpful. Rather than saying thank you for letting us know, she gave an excuse and said she’s “kinda busy” ((well of course but don’t you want to know?)) Then we had a question in the brewery about making four packs to go and the response was again very rude. I don’t know if they have too many customers (I mean good for you) but service is important… it’s the difference between a sale and no sale. (We didn’t buy due to service in this instance.)

Stopped in to check this place out. There is great outdoor seating with a few photo ops to choose from. Very cute. Great selection of wine.

Winery and brewery all in one place! THAT is very satisfying. 2nd year here with a work conference. Great place to hang our after a long day of indoor sessions. I started with a light flight of brew this time, last year I did the wine flight. My peers teased me about how gross a pumpkin coffee beer must be, I also had my doubts, I actually LOVED IT and wished they had it canned in their to go cooler to share at our beer tasting event for the next night and to bring home. This place doesn't disappoint. Looking forward to going again either with conference or with my family and friends when in the area.

We had the most perfect wedding day, and it was all thanks to the staff at Carlos Creek. From our initial venue tour to the end of the wedding night, the staff was nothing but attentive, helpful, and kind. One of the main reasons we chose this venue was their promise of "doing it all." We did not want our family or bridal party to have to put in work on our wedding day, and the staff did an amazing job of making that happen. The event team, especially Shelby, did such a great job throughout the planning process as well ensuring all of our questions were answered. Our family and guests had nothing but wonderful things to say about the staff, and we are very grateful for every person at Carlos Creek for giving us the easiest, most beautiful, and best wedding day ever! Thank you!

Runestone Museum Foundation

History museum
Museums
Exhibits & artifacts on Nordic & Native American history & regional wildlife in a historic complex.
Oh my goodness — what a lovely museum! Inside they had both Dakota & Ojibwa displays and asked people to remain respectful as they are the original First Nations to inhabit the modern state of Minnesota (they weren’t the only ones but are the main ones). Plus they had pioneer displays that tried to show what it was like during the early days of homesteading. The outside building were very impressive. The Runestone was inside and its history was different than what’s out on the web. In the museum they present information that supports the theory the Runestone is real and not fake. One such reason is the finder had a very limited education before emigrating from Sweden. The museum gift shop was a simply gem! Lots of books and even some gifts and normal t-shirts and other odds and ends. There are some neat Viking items. There was a hide-n-seek game specifically for children which was adorable. It was very much a place that was geared for families. Fun fact: it’s very close to a Legacy of the Lakes Museum are connected by a parking lot. We did not go to the other museum.

Very easy to visit..good parking. I was so pleasantly surprised ...as I did not realize how amazing my visit would be at Runestone Museum . Easy to navigate at your own pace and cell phone helped with information on many artifacts. Museum has many Native American objects ,along with details of item. The Viking Age has been captured here on a level you can understand and see how the Norsemen traveled into North America. Definitely watch the " Viking" movie they offer, before you start your exploring. Very cool to actually see the Runestone...I believe. Gift Shop has many interesting souvenirs. Excellent Museum :)

This was our 2nd visit to the museum and we would go back again if we are in town! My 7 & 10 year old enjoyed the scavenger hunt activity to help them learn more! All the artifacts in and outside were so fun to explore!
Amanda L — Google review
We arrived to the Museum 1/2 hour before close. The curator was so nice and friendly. She gave us a lot of information and really took her time. Thank you for that and cannot wait for more series on the Runestone
Tina K — Google review
As someone who knew NOTHING about the Runestone, I admit this museum did an amazing job educating me not just about the deep history of the Runestone but of other histories as well (of the native Americans in the area) The museum was great and told the complex history of the Runestone in a way a beginner like me could understand. I appreciated the extra stuff outside which gives context to the city of Alexandria as a whole. This place is great for families and kids to! Interesting place to stop if your interested in this sort of thing
KK G — Google review
I've taken my family here twice and both times we loved it. The staff is always so welcoming and accommodating. So much work and care has been put into the displays and it shows. This is some of the most important and unique history in Minnesota and is a must-see for anyone and everyone in this state and beyond. I had no idea there were so many more viking artifacts unearthed on Minnesota ground in addition to the iconic kensington runestone itself. Amazing collection of native American items as well.
George D — Google review
I have been here a couple of times. The displays are informative and the people are very helpful. I was able to learn alot about the area as well as the tale behind the Runestone. It was informative and fun to visit. Thank you!
MarySue O — Google review
While it was fun to see a famous curiosity, my family and I were disappointed that the short film, exhibit and museum guides really leaned into the authenticity narrative. We found that the evidence presented was pretty weak - for example, the short film you watch at the beginning concludes with (and I'm paraphrasing here because I don't remember the exact words) "look around you, feel the presence of the vikings in the weather and landscape and decide for yourself." Some of the statements presented as truth, such as that the discoverer of the stone never said it was a hoax and affirmed it was authentic until he died, were directly refuted at another museum we visited on our trip. I think the Runestone Museum would be more interesting if they told both sides: the original story and the reasons people believe it is a hoax. One other thing they could improve upon is how all of the other artifacts are displayed in the exhibits. They seemed mostly jumbled together, lacked clear displays and the interpretive signs and written information was not adequate to explain the significance of most of the pieces. That said, the people working there are welcoming and the viking ship and little village were worth looking at. Overall it was a little expensive for what it was and I would skip it unless you are really into oddities, such as the runestone.

Character Challenge Course

High ropes course

Zipline & Aerial Adventure Parks
My son got married this past weekend and we rented the Dojo cabin and all the bridesmaids and groomsmen stayed here. They also used it to get ready and all the wedding pictures. The bridal party had a blast with all the indoor and outdoor games. The cabin is beautiful for all the wedding pictures that were taken inside and out. Having 2 separate kitchens and 2 identical sides was very convenient for keeping the bride and groom from seeing each other. The owners were super easy to work with and very helpful. I would definitely recommend this place to any wedding party. Thanks so much!!
Laura B — Google review
My family had a great time! The difficulty of the ropes course seemed just right for people not accustomed to doing that sort of thing. My 11 year old did it no problem. The self-belay system seemed pretty idiot-proof and I never felt like there was any danger of falling.

Challenge course with multiple different challenge options. Can go as small group or larger. Families, teams, friends, coworkers all can benefit from some of the team building skills and encouragement activities. Can help put things in perspective. Has small inside store with branded gear, small bathroom. Large outdoor gathering space. There is not a lot of parking. Many different games and challenges. There is a playground for smaller children. Ropes course is elevated high enough to give even those without height scares some shake knees. Rip cord (always fun), Trust sessions, problem solving skills and team balance. The staff is trained well and fun to work with.

John L — Google review
Casino is visibly in disrepair from the outside as you drive in. Trees and bushes and plants are overgrown, not maintained. Parking lot is in poor shape. Gaming area has poor ventilation in most areas, and smoke is very prolific. I had to wash the walls and headboard covered in black dirty handprints in the room. Pool was out of service, but we had a king with jacuzzi room. Sunday morning, when I decided to relax in jacuzzi, I discovered the jacuzzi button was not working. We checked out early, and I asked for a discount on room because of amenities advertised and paid for not working. The "lead" person at check out came out, took info, and told me that I would not get a discount because I did not use the jacuzzi the night previous and call to have fixed! She doubled down on that and inferred that it probably was not broken. I was truly appalled at the level of customer service as I was willing to have maintenance check it since it was 35 minutes before check out.

We went in to eat at the restaurant. 2 servers for 4 to 5 tables. Waited 20 minutes for service. Then waited a hour for our food. We shared the dinner special of full rack of ribs with 2 - 1 trip salad bars. The ribs were drenched in sauce, the baked potato was luke warm at best. The roll had mold on it. When I brought the rolls mold to the attention of the server she took it with no word or apology. She then came back with two rolls still no apology. They only checked on us once. Then when we went to pay she did not remember what we ordered and asked us what we ordered. Also my wife mentioned that we didn't have a great experience, again no apology or offer of a discount. An excuse of "oh were busy". And we will not return.

I generally enjoy myself when visiting here. Most of the casino and hotel staff are both personable and helpful when approached. Other guests are usually fun to play with and talk to. It's great to have the buffet back. The chef prepares excellent food here, as well as at the Dancing Star! Make sure to go on BBQ rib night as these are the best ribs I've ever eaten at a restaurant since Smokey Bill's in Brainerd closed many years ago. Waitresses are also great and quick to help. The staff is always on the quick, and ready to make sure your dining experience is a pleasurable one. Kudos to the buffet staff! I don't usually spend the night here, as it's just as easy to drive home, but I have averaged about 7 nights each year for the past 9 years. In the past you were asked if you wanted toiletries, and if needed, you were given some. You could also get an extra coffee from the front desk. This was changed when they added in-shower dispensers to their rooms. On several occasions since this implementation, dispensers were either empty or not functioning. Last month when a friend of mine ended up staying as it got late, I was told that two of these dispensers were not functioning, the water in the shower never got warm, and one of the beds had bedding that had not been changed. Even at their discounted rate of $65, this should not be acceptable. Therefore, I would recommend checking your room as soon as you check in and not waiting until you're naked in the shower! All in all I enjoy Northern Lights, their food, staff and the camaraderie with other patrons. I will keep returning on a regular basis.
Karmie D — Google review
Had been there many times over the years. We are from Iowa. Had not been back for five to six years till now. How things have changed. Bad decision. My wife and I love to go to casinos. We are retired. First time I have had zero fun at a casino. Win or lose made no difference. Just the hospitality of the employees was bad. No employee seamed to care if you were even there. Was ready to go to my room at 8:00 and call it a night. No fun. No one was rude but the entire staff was unpleasant. Didn’t seem to really care if you were there or not. Got up the next morning and was glad to leave and not come back. Sorry this nice large casino has gone this direction. Been in business all my life and learned that you never take customers for granted. Northern Lights Casino and Resort needs to explain this to their employees. Sorry for a bad review but just had to say how I feel after many earlier trips to Northern Lights that were enjoyable.

Definitely won't be spending my money here ever again. I've stayed here before, no charge, in my camper van, but they now wanted $45! To park overnight. HA. That's ok, Too bad, I would've played at least $50-$100, plus had a nice dinner. Instead, took myself down the road to free parking and better food anyways. The below pics are from my FIRST visit back in 2022 when they DID let us park for FREE! Will NEVer be back!

Went there Wednesday night for the BBQ buffet. Let me tell you what a let down. We got there had to wait to be seated for over 10 mins keep in mind they were not busy in the least and the ribs were dry and crusty and everything else looked like it had been sitting since they opened the buffet that night. And our biggest let down was the ice cream machine wasn't working. we paid 23.99 to be disappointed with flavorless, dry crusty old food. Maybe the casino is down on their luck. We go out to eat 2-3 times a week and never have I been this disappointed and irritated about an ear experience.

I shared this experience with a group of friends that were visiting the area. I have driven past many times and wondered if it would be worth it to pursue as an activity. THEY DELIVERED! We had a marvelous time, were challenged, pushed to personal limits and had tremendous laughs along the way. The crew were wonderful and laughed along with us. They were also incredibly good at encouraging us when necessary. I will recommend and experience again with other friends and family as they visit our beautiful community. SO MUCH FUN!!!

Destiny, Autumn and Aster were all professional and well trained from booking the tour to completing the zip line tour. We had huge wind gusts, cold weather but we never had any doubt about our safety or fun. Autumn and Aster marked the spot each time ensuring safety for the group of 9 women. It took a lot of skill and endurance for them to get us through the course but we laughed and had a great time. Thank You Brainerd Zip Line Tour. Kathy

Visitors can also explore the Starkeller Taproom and enjoy activities like a golf simulator. As the second oldest family-owned brewery in the US, it boasts a rich history and diverse selection of German craft beers.
Super cool spot with tons of history! Visit the gift shop and museum to learn about the brewery's history, then head into the attached beer hall for a bevvy and soft pretzel. I tried the draft root beer which was really good! Nice patio and biergarten areas too. You can also wander the grounds around the old mansion and gardens, where you'll probably find Fred or Barney (peacocks) squawking away. There is also a deer pen behind the mansion with friendly deer!

This brewery is such an amazing experience to take part. Even if you don't do the tour, the grounds here are a sight to see in themselves. The garden outside of the beer garden is absolutely lovely. You can walk on paths through the flowers and see the old historic house. Grab a beer from the wonderful taproom and take it to the beer garden to enjoy. Or hangout in the taproom that has plenty of seating, all Schells beers on tap, and a food menu with pizza and soft pretzel with cheese. The gift shop has a great selection of gifts as well.

What a cool historic brewery, taproom and garden! Lovely place to relax on scenic grounds. We even got to stick our head in the historic taproom and see the old cellar.

I stopped by one day to take the brewery tour and it was awesome. The tour guide was fantastic - very informational and had several stories to tell about the company and brewery. The place itself is also very cool - full of stunning architecture and vintage technology. I’d definitely recommend stopping by to take the tour if you have the chance. Very cool.

Great prices on 5 oz pours to sample from $2.50-$4. Several pizzas to choose from, unusual like tater tot, Octoberfest, and Korean BBQ @ $15 each. Peacocks roam the grounds!

Amazing hidden gem in the woods enriched in history- a must stop off the main highway- great beer loved the sangria- and super place to have a meeting. Beautiful property

Beautiful grounds and buildings of a 165year old brewery. The tour is great and so much history. It's a must see in the start of MN

Went here with some friends over the weekend and we had a great time on the tour and of course drinking beer, Prost! The tour was very informative and the guide was very knowledgeable. As Schell’s is America’s second oldest brewery that is privately owned, (according to our guide just behind Yuengling) in my opinion, Schell’s is still true to its roots with all private ownership kept in the family, which makes it number one in my book! Also don’t forget to stop and grab some sweet Schell’s or Grain Belt merch in the gift shop before you leave.

Munsinger Gardens, along with Clemens Gardens, is a historic and well-known landmark in the St. Cloud area. The gardens are the result of a romantic story and the dedication of many volunteers. Visitors can stroll through manicured paths and be amazed by the beauty of hundreds of thousands of blooms, from rose gardens to various water features.
Absolutely stunning garden with lots of both shady and sunny areas with benches and swings to stop and take in the view. We saw both couples and families having picnics, folks taking pictures, and people walking dogs with still plenty of solitude and quiet for everyone. What a stunning garden and place to walk or rest, with spectacular views of the river, and all for free! There's a restroom building, too. Highly recommend visiting.

What a beautiful part of the world! Right along the Mississippi River, this is a wonderfully curated, manicured and maintained garden. It is free and open to the public. Lots of street parking and a parking lot next to the garden for easy access. I highly recommend visiting when you are in town.
Beth H — Google review
Beautiful place to stroll around and enjoy a nice sunny day. About an hour drive from the Cities. There is street parking. You can walk up to the other side where there are more gardens and a little ice cream shop as well.

the gardens are absolutely beautiful. the upper garden has a huge photography fee and the lower garden is cheaper for doing photography. when you call and get the permit to do photography in the garden you get 2 hrs time slots. they say that they only allow 1 person in each garden doing photography at a time but I noticed both times that there was more than just the one. they also say no photography with people in them including selfie but noticed a lot of that too. over all the gardens are beautiful but I think they need to get rid of the fees since its not followed at all.

We had a great time exploring the grounds looking at the flowers and plants. I went with 5 kids ages 6 and under. The staff do a great job at keeping the park and gardens super well maintained

An absolutely beautiful set of gardens that will blow your mind! It is right on the river in a lovely neighborhood and a set of bald eagles right now! Definitely recommend bug spray this time of year. There are also peacocks and lovely places to sit and picnic.

Delightful public space, a real surprise and treat to find this place while in town for a concert! Many blooming perennials this early in the season, would love to come back later in the summer as the new plants have filled in!

Grand Casino Mille Lacs

Casino
Casinos & Gambling
Restaurant
Relaxed rooms in a bustling casino resort with a laid-back American grill & an indoor pool.
My room was amazing and the service staff was warm and friendly. They have plenty of simple food options and the casino was pretty well put together. I will certainly return to the area. I didn't have a chance to go out and look around, but the area is small and spaced out at the same time. I'm not much of a gambler, but it seemed like folks were having a good time at the machines.
Anderson J — Google review
We had a great time. The property was beautiful, nice clean room, very comfortable bed, Our housekeeper Aaron was very friendly and accommodating. The casino had a lot of fun games. Bartenders at the 1991 were amazing. The food we had from Plums was delicious. We’ll definitely be back!

Stopped here to play a few slot games and use the bathroom. Oh! And I wanted the Special K bars that the Hinckley Grand Casino sells, but unfortunately they said they don't have them! Lost $11 and it was a great time! Only 3 photos to share.

Great facilities for a great price! Large pool and the biggest hot tub I've ever been in - and temps were great. Super clean and friendly staff. Well done!

Nice location, I have stayed in the rooms with no complaints but the casino isn't the best. The casino staff tend to be a toss up , ethier very friendly or crabby. I have noticed compared to say mystic lake or Canterbury Park the staff are slightly more snappy. Though if your someone who wants a more quiet casino experience it beats out mystic lake, mainly since it's a smaller casino. overall it's nice

Great staff, allowed us to check in early for our vacation weekend. Rooms were clean, beds were comfortable, and the hand written welcome note was a very nice touch. I'll be back for sure!

The machines were littered with trash everywhere. I ordered a pizza from plums took over a hour after they told me 35 minutes. I won’t be coming back for a while very disappointed I have always enjoyed it in the past.

Minneopa State Park

Mentioned on

State park
Nature & Parks
Minneopa State Park boasts an array of recreational activities for visitors to enjoy, including hiking trails with panoramic views, a stunning waterfall, picnic areas and campsites. The hike to the falls is not for the faint-hearted and may prove challenging due to high water levels covering the path. Visitors are warned that 70 steps lead down to the base of the waterfall and 70 back up again, with a total distance of 0.15 miles from top to bottom.
A small state park but lots of great trails, beautiful waterfalls, nice facilities, friendly staff, adequate campground, and a herd of bison. Seppmann Mill was very interesting, and the view of the bison range from there is nice.
H Q — Google review
Went for the Waterfall and it did not disappoint (this particular date) full flowing spectacular- Recent rain upstream having a huge effect on the quantity.. It does change quite dramatically, so go expecting some water, but not huge flow- unless the weather has been wet before hand 😋
Sam H — Google review
🦬 First stop: the Bison Drive! This unique auto tour gives you the chance to see a herd of majestic bison roaming freely across the prairie. We lucked out and caught them super close to the road—it’s such a cool experience (and perfect for kids, too!). Then stretch your legs with a short walk to Minneopa Falls. Whether you hike to the bottom or take in the views from above, the falls are a stunning sight and well worth the trip. Pack a snack, bring your camera, and enjoy a little escape without having to go far.
Kelly H — Google review
Was never disappointed visiting this place. Although the entry fee is $7 per vehicle, there’s the all-year subscription at $35, which covered the Minnesota State Parks. Definitely the all-year subscription is worth the price, especially if you’re living in/around Mankato or in Minnesota in general. I really love the accessibility of both the falls. Also the place has great landscape overall. Definitely a great outdoor place to visit with friends and family.
Mahmudul S — Google review
The good: nice campsites, walking friendly trails, patrons were all quiet and friendly for the most part, the bison are cool and the ambassadors are cooler, the waterfall is gorgeous The bad: road noise, noise from the train that is a mile or so away later at night, firewood was wet, B17 has a black walnut tree that drops all night, drain flies in the self standing toilets. What to know: There is firewood for sale, no ice for sale that i know of. Park ranger office closes at 4pm weekdays and 6pm weekends and is NOT near the campsite. The park is divided into two sections so follow signs for office first. LIke anywhere in Minnesota there are a lot of mosquitos (not a deal breaker for me). The even B sites have the most privacy.
Anna L — Google review
Beautiful double waterfall, we were disappointed that the trail was closed, but there’s still a great view of the falls. The buffalo enclosure drive was a unique experience. We got a glimpse of about 12 members of the herd.
Dawn A — Google review
Nice park. Go to both entrances. You can see bison on one end and the falls at the other end. The falls are a short walk from the entrance and parking 🅿️ lot.
Amanda D — Google review
The waterfalls are beautiful. We did the buffalo drive and didn't see anything the first time, but we came back a couple of hours later and saw them from a distance. Didn't check out the campground or any other hiking trails so can't comment on those.

Albertville Premium Outlets

Outlet mall
Shopping
Shopping Malls
UPDATE- I originally placed this review here because I could not find a way on their website to email management. My original rating was 1 star. Because of immediate response from them here, and me seeing the flag down today when I ran some alterations to Tin’s Tailer…I have updated rating. Thank you! ——————————- As a local I appreciate having this mall to shop at and support. I am somewhat saddened, and was hoping that when they put the new Minnesota flag up that they would replace the US flag that has been tattered for a very long time. I understand that they may not be able to afford to replace it, but taking it down until that time and discarding it at the St. Michael American Legion…until which time it can be replaced…is more respectable than letting it fly in this condition.

Albertville Premium Outlets, located at 6415 Labeaux Avenue NE in Albertville, Minnesota (about 30 minutes north of Minneapolis along the I‑94 corridor), is a spacious open-air outlet mall spread over roughly 80 acres and home to 60–100 brand-name stores such as Nike Factory Store, Coach Outlet, Michael Kors, UGG Outlet, The North Face, and lululemon—offering everyday discounts of about 25%–65% . The center features amenities like free parking, veteran-reserved spots, electric vehicle charging, complimentary wheelchairs, baby-changing stations, a children’s play area, and dining options including Starbucks, Five Guys, and food trucks . While the main section remains active, Reddit reports note that an older wing (the original “Promenade” section across the road) has largely been vacated and is slated for redevelopment . Overall, it remains Minnesota’s premier outlet shopping destination—especially for bargain hunters traveling between Minneapolis and St. Cloud .
Zubair S — Google review
The shopping center has great outlets for all to enjoy. From Nike to sketchers, it has all you need for your great shopping needs. Even though 94 is going through construction, it's still an easy place to get to.

This was my second time visiting Albertville Premium Outlet, and I have to say every shop had quality items at really reasonable prices. The public restrooms were also very well maintained, which is a big plus. The first time I came, I only bought an Adidas track pant, but on my second trip, I scored some amazing deals I got two Nike shoes for dirt cheap and a North Face jacket, and a pair of Gap shorts! I also tried the coffee, which was pretty good, and had Five Guys for the first time ever—the burger was delicious, and the cashiers were super chill. Overall, a great experience!
Aayushman S — Google review
I can see why half of this place is now shut down. There are little to no deals to be had anymore. Not a true outlet like it used to be. Also, everything looks to be “tired”. Clearly this place is on the down side of its existence. If you do go wear comfortable shoes as you will be doing a ton of walking.
Wildlife W — Google review
There are mainly clothing and shoe shops. No shops selling household things. The place was quiet, but it a Wednesday. Weekends and holidays would be telling.
Steven T — Google review
The majority of stores in this "outlet mall" are just regular stores so I'm not quite sure why they are part of an outlet mall. The actual outlet stores have prices no better than their regular counterparts. All of the stores are cramped and miserably hot and the prices and selection of items is laughable. On the day I went, the Adidas store was inexplicably closed, with just a note taped to the door that I didn't bother to read as I was too annoyed to find it closed when it was one of the few stores I actually wanted to visit. Going to this mall was a waste of time and I left without buying anything.

One star for awareness. Your Vivi Bubble Tea vendor is against health code violations. The store is absolutely filthy. They have food products they are selling in a food case that is far neglected (as is the entire store) NO GLOVES or wrappers or napkins to handle unwrapped food (mochi donuts) or offer customers- rather a roll of paper towels “if you want one” that they will tear off from behind the counter with their dirty hands. 2 employees of which one had poor hygiene and from clothes and hands being dirty just didn’t hit the mark- I witnessed them refuse cash payment because “they are out of cash” and earn repeated reviews of consistently being out of menu items. I witnessed an employee half seal a beverage and toss it at a customer today. We love the outlets. We had exceptional service at Five Guys instead and always do, but that bubble tea shop is an eye sore, a downer and leaves a lasting impression of “ick” plus they don’t have a social media presence so you can’t leave reviews directly. Also noticed a few dead birds in parking lot and a lot of police activity. Not sure how much longer this location will last if things continue to decline. I would much rather see it come back up and succeed, but it has to start by someone who can make that impact, actually addressing the issues on site. Dropping this here in hopes Simons will take note. Thanks
