I loved this place. I went to visited for the Tulip festival, the field was so beautiful. My friends and I took a ton of photos and we have a great day. We drank chocolate milk and we ate pizza. The employees are so nice and I think the prices are fair. Definitely I will return!!

Very fun family place. Admission is about $22 each. Includes most activities. Admission to the haunted houses/experiences is literally $50 each though. We did not do the haunted houses due to price so I can't give feedback on that. Overall an interesting, fun time.

Traveling from out of state and had a day to kill. We were initially turned off by the high cost of admission ($22/ person) but decided to go ahead- and oh my goodness, I’m so glad we did! We spent 6 hours there with our 6 and 10 year old and they would’ve been completely content to stay longer. They have a few add ons you can purchase but we did none of those and still had an absolutely amazing time. I loved that there were so many staff members and they all seemed attentive, caring and were not on their phones (omg I sound like a boomer! Ha!) Seriously though- delicious specialty drinks and food to top it all off! Would highly highly recommend!!

We came here for the tulip festival and were pleasantly surprised! I kind of expected it to be underwhelming. When I moved to Iowa 4 years ago everyone talked about Pella's tulips which were really restricted to little patches through the town. This was an actual field of tulips!!! Not as big as the Netherlands or even Holland, Michigan, but still very substantial for Midwestern America! IT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! After strolling through the tulip fields, we visited with the animals, went through the farm market, and enjoyed other various activities. The geode cracking was pretty cool. My personal favorite is probably the slides. There's a short hay ride if you want. This place was so much fun for children and adults, alike. You also get a lot of bang for your buck! There are so many activities for the just the price of admission. The animal feed is also really cheap. We got our tickets during the flash sale so the deal was even sweeter! There are wooden stands in front of most of the photo ops so you don't even have to bring a selfie stick. The staff is also more than happy to take your photo! Everyone there was beyond wonderful!

We had a blast here this Saturday as a family. My son loved the derecho slide and the corn palace. He was enamored with the bubbles so much he didn't want to leave. I enjoyed picking flowers and looking at the butterflies. The wine slushies were delicious and refreshing after picking the wildflowers/sunflowers. Ended with fries, wine and live music to wrap up the night. Beautiful farm to come enjoy the summer in. Highly recommend!
Laura C — Google review
My husband and I visited Bloomsbury Farm on May 3rd for the Tulip Festival, and it was absolutely stunning. Tickets cost $17 online, which is about $5 less than buying them at the gate. The staff were friendly—even offering to take photos for us and other guests without being asked. The tulips were gorgeous and made the two-hour drive from Des Moines well worth it. There were plenty of activities for kids, along with a variety of snack and drink options. Tulips were also available for purchase. Parking was ample and convenient. If they bring the tulips back next year, I highly recommend making the trip 🙂

We went for the flower event with live music. It was the perfect the night. Staff was unbelievably friendly and helpful - they truly wanted to make our experience wonderful. Will be back again and again!

I've been coming here since I was very young, and every time I revisit it's like I'm stepping back into the best parts of my childhood. There's always so many different activities, animals, and different food to try. I love feeding the goats as well as coming for our yearly pumpkin picking tradition!

Amana Colonies is a collection of seven traditional German villages in Eastern Iowa, offering old-fashioned stores, restaurants, and artists' workshops. It's a charming Midwest destination with shops, wineries, and various activities that provide an escape to a simpler time.
We stopped by for the Iowa Renaissance Festival (which was very fun) and then cruised through town and stopped by The Chocolate Haus as we were looking for some ice-cream afterwards. The ice-cream was fantastic and they have do many other treats to choose from! Very cool area. Rustic charm everywhere you look....planning on heading back as there's alot to explore.

Interesting shopping, sites, and history. Lovely restaurants with great food. We made reservations but there were walk-in customers. Beautiful flower areas in front of cute gift stores. The lady at the Visitor Center was very thorough explaining the history of Amana. Plenty of parking.

In August 2025, we visited the Amana Colonies Visitor's Center in Amana, Iowa. The Amana Colonies are a collection of 7 Colonies of German Heritage in Central Iowa, and they are not Amish. There are many quaint shops and buildings, and they are clean and well-maintained. Apparently, the Amana Colonies draws the highest number of visitors of any tourist attraction in Iowa. We greatly enjoyed visiting the Amana Colonies Visitor's Center.

We stopped through here on a road trip. Very pretty, it's great if you want to shop but it's mainly only shopping and eating. But a very cute little place.
Gemma M — Google review
We had a great visit at the Amana colonies. There were some great shops and places to eat in town. It's fun learning about the interesting history. Highly recommended.
Keith J — Google review
It’s a nice historic town with nice shops to explore. We had a nice German dinner and visited the local brewery with really good beers!

This was a great overnight destination for us. We found good food, lots of history, and walkable shops. Our accommodations at the Millcreek Inn were excellent.

Stopped here with my wife while passing through and wished we had more time. Beautiful old world charm with unique shops, restaurants, and bakeries. We will be back and visit when we have more time and will bring our RV as the nearby campgrounds look nice as well. Definitely worth stopping by and everyone was helpful and friendly.

Amana Heritage Society

Mentioned on
12 lists
Museum
Sights & Landmarks
The Amana Heritage Society in Iowa offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the region's settlers. Visitors can explore several houses with shops, including a large general store with Christmas connections. The heritage museum provides a video introduction to early settlers, while the nearby house offers two levels of further exploration, including artifacts like a radar range from the 1960s.
There's much to say about the really important and wonderful Amana Heritage Society, but today, I enjoyed the "Colonies in Bloom" garden walk. Which I believe was sponsored by the Amana Heritage Society Museum and the Amana Colonies Events. We picked up a detailed map at the Visitors Center in Main Amana. Complete descriptions and addresses plus a QR code to find the same map on Google maps. The tour took us to all of the colonies (except West), where we toured the beautiful private gardens of some very committed and enthusiastic gardeners. An impressive and heart lifting array of flowers (and vegetables and herbs) that hit their peak in July. This is much appreciated timing for the late garden beauty that follows the first flush of splendor in June. Our conversations with the gardeners themselves in each are a large part of the enjoyment of this tour. The unique experience of this is not only are you dazzled by the colors and variety of plantings, but you also glimpse some of the unique history of this area. A few of the tour stops are in the well maintained gardens at historical sites. If you love flowers, history, being outdoors, and having a couple of interesting chats with like-minded folks, this is a can't miss event that occurs annually and is free of charge.

Very well presented video presentation at the museum $10. & other interesting items & videos at middle Amana. After the attractions the rest is a lot of tourist for sale stuff. Nice camping area on the edge of town. Flat not many trees but reasonable.
Kenneth H — Google review
A very comprehensive museum on the life and times of the people of the Amana Colony. They have a large collection of artifacts, photos, documents, and stories of the people who lived and worked there. Stop and see this historic village.
Angie H — Google review
The interesting history of this area of IA added another level of history that you may not know about the settlers of the region. There are several houses along the street with shops of different interests for all to enjoy. General store being the largest with Christmas connected. The heritage museum has a nice video start to give you basic understanding of the early settlers. Then on to house with two levels of further exploring and interest. Even the radar range that grandparents may have had from the 60's!! Enjoy your walk along both sides of the street, park in middle or ends to enjoy your time here.
T R — Google review
Great place to visit spent about 3 hours walking around all the shops in the area
Denise F — Google review
Entrance fee of $10/ adult seemed high until we saw everything. Started with the video about the history. It was comprehensive but it could have explained more about how the community navigated " the big change" when they stopped being a communal living situation. It would be interesting to hear more about the shift from individuals. Unfortunately, I am guessing the adults are all dead by now. It is worth your time and $$ to experience this.
Deb V — Google review
Amana Heritage Society- Amazing complex. 4 museums for $10. Well worth it! ❤️

The Shops at Williamsburg

Outlet mall
Shopping
Shopping-mall chain featuring a variety of brand-name & designer outlet stores.
Over all it was great experience, few stores but good ones Will visit again, loved that it has truck parking next yo the mall
Sukhjinder B — Google review
A shell of it's former self. I remember when McDonald's was the only thing standing before the mall. I do miss the Pizza Hut though, had some great memories working there in high school, but come on, we all know visiting the Nike store is a must.
Jason G — Google review
I haven't been here for a while and I definitely won't be going back. The amount of empty storefronts outnumbered the occupied ones, 3 to 1. And the stores that are left, the selection and inventory was a joke. Its like everything that doesn't sell at other locations is sent here. Dont waste your time. Take the extra hour and drive to the outlets in Altoona.
Michael — Google review
Stopped for a quick visit however ended up visiting more than we expected. The pink card offer of 25% discount helped us this time as we were planning for a event. Based on my personal Tanger outlets visits this one seemed to have little more offer than other similar outlets(maybe were just lucky). Some employees might not apply the offer unless you specifically pay attention to the final check out amount. It happened to us in one instances and when we pointed out final checkout amount dropped considerably.
RJ — Google review
I was very surprised, it almost seemed abandoned. There were lots of empty storefronts. I was really quite surprised. There were only two places to eat McDonald's are Hardee's
Millie C — Google review
Awesome place! Got to shop and parked our semi truck. I am saving this location so I can shop while in the area again. They have dog park as well. Thank you management.

Its a really good place for shopping. There are many stores with lot of options. Clean and well maintained. Highly recommended. The parking lot was like 70% full so it was bustling with people.

Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel

Casino
Casinos & Gambling
Casual casino hotel offering 4 restaurants, a bar & an outdoor arena, plus mobility scooters.
Stopped for a bit in our way through. Had a great time! Atmosphere was good. I was surprised, but it didn't completely smell like cigarettes like most casinos. Had the Buffet. A little pricey, but plenty of different food options to cure about any craving. If you don't leave full, it's your fault.
Clayton S — Google review
Service at the buffet was awful. We accidentally chose the wrong line and the cashier barked at us since we didn't have a players card. There was no one behind us. As we walked to the opposite side she snapped that we had to wait until my husband caught up with us. He'd dropped my 85 year-old mother and me off while he parked because she can't walk far or stand long. The other cashier was much kinder. I paid for just my mother and I so she could sit down. But after we paid the kid seating us had been told that we'd still have to wait for my husband. This is cruel. Finally, the second cashier intervened and told him to seat us. He replied, "But she told me I couldn't." I understand the concern that someone can sneak in without paying. I also understand not seating incomplete party ahead of another party waiting, but the seating was 95% empty, it was close to the end of the day, there was no one else waiting, and it was highly unlikely for there to be a sudden rush. If the rules are so strict, my husband could have been seated at another table next to us after he paid. My job as a manager is customer service. Even when a cashier is tired at the end of the day, it's never a reason to mistreat a customer. You want the cashier for the priority line to offer excellent service and not treat people as inferior because they aren't elite customers. You want to show what the customer could gain with their loyalty. At minimum, you want them to come back again. We'd driven over 2 hours because we'd heard good things. We left without gambling because of our experience. Aside from the poor service, I observed servers pouring new food on top of old, dried out food without swapping pans. This is frowned upon because of cross contamination and extending how long food remains on buffet. This can increase the risk of food borne illness.
L M — Google review
I was pleasantly surprised by the great hotel serving the Desk waking gaming enterprise. Rooms were well appointed. Great bath...something that I value! Plenty of bath linens. Friendly staff. Property well maintained. Plenty of parking. Highly recommended.
Joseph M — Google review
Transcendent. The machines are sentient, the staff people are attentive and kind, and the buffet is divine. Seriously, each station was attended by an individual who seemed to actually care about the food quality and satisfaction. I felt loved by strangers, especially on my way out as the dance floor opened up. Will return.
Craten D — Google review
I go to Meskwaki with my mom to play BINGO quite a lot. We always have a good time. My only complaint is, the Bingo lines sometimes take 20 to 25 minutes before you get to the counter. I just wish they would move the people through the lines faster. That's it though. I love this place. So much better than the Isle in Waterloo. Friendly staff, good food, and a comfortable atmosphere.
David W — Google review
I'm an over-the-road truck driver. Happened to me making a delivery in this area and I needed to take a 34-hour reset. The hotel was very reasonably priced. The staff was very professional very kind and courteous. I will definitely be back.
Matthew N — Google review
I didn’t stay at the hotel. The restaurant I ate at had a friendly staff. But the food wasn’t too good and overpriced. Gift shop was boring with little to look at. Here too it was expensive. The cashier seemed rather shallow whom I think lived underneath a rock. The casino was huge. But nothing impressed me. No “Wow!” factor at all. Very tight slot machines. Virtually impossible to win anything. A complete ripoff. They shouldn’t have a gaming license. And the staff acted stuck up. No smiles or friendly behavior. So if you’re driving along highway 30. And see this place. Keep on going. Because there are other casinos on this highway in Iowa. That are 1000 times better than this one. A wasted trip for me.
Ace — Google review
We went for the seafood buffet on a Friday afternoon/evening. The first plate of crab was not great but the second one was! I think maybe we just didn't get there at the best time. We got there around 345 and it seemed like a lot of the fried food had been sitting there for awhile, including the crab. They started getting busy shortly after our first round at the buffet and the food was much fresher from then on out. It was a nice little casino. It's been a long time since I was in a place where smoking was allowed inside. Which I think is normal for casinos but be aware, that hits you in the face if you aren't used to it! Once we got into the buffet I couldn't smell it anymore though. Parking was pretty easy, not overly crowded, friendly people, good price for the buffet. Our waitress was nice, we didn't get refills or have our plates busses very often but it wasn't inconvenient.

Matchstick Marvels

Specialty Museums
Super cool displays, which are only a fraction of what the guy has made. It gets even more incredible when you read how many thousands of matchsticks went into this or thst piece. The level of detail is astonishing. Went on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't crowded. $10 for 2 of us and we spent about 30mins checkin it all out. Highly recommend

It was quite an amazing experience visiting the museum. I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed myself and was in awe with the displays and the fine details.

I have visited this museum and it is awesome…so attached is a photo of the Milan Cathedral made by my cousin in the 1950-60. It is NOT in this museum…However, it Took 12 years to complete and over 1million sticks.. So our family has a love for matchstick art….Come and see this museum, you won’t be disappointed… We will revisit again next week and are bringing friends….!!

I visited once when the chamber of commerce was closed (but of course you can see the building from the outside.) I recommend visiting on a day where you can go inside cuz that's where the "magic" is.

A must see if your travels bring you to this part of Iowa! Designed by Lois Sullivan (interiors, too). Perfect example of his maxim: Form ever follows function. Beautifully maintained by the Grinnell Chamber of Commerce. Go inside! Visitors are welcome. Free information sheet to take away and YouTube videos to watch.

I was very excited to see the bank. Huge fan of Adler and Sullivan, as well as Frank Lloyd Wright. The town had a makeover a few years back, and the town looks great. Every intersection the design of the star design on the bank. Plenty of restaurants, and Central Park is cool with the band shell. I enjoyed my day. Thanks.

Never heard of a Sullivan jewel box bank before, so fun to run across this place during visit to Grinnell. Lovely retired professor gave us tour of this moment in time architecture. Great preservation and condition, a testament to its builder as well as its owner and benefactor (Wells Fargo Bank.) Unique place to pop in.

Celebrated my 58th bday here. They were all so friendly and knowledgeable. Loved the wine flights, they come with bread and dipping oil. We also had a light lunch of chicken Ceasar salad. It was delicious. The place is a wonderful place to visit for any occasion.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. While I was forced to visit by my wine loving wife, I ended up enjoying the wine and the space. Staff were super friendly and knowledgeable. Prices were very reasonable and to top it off the wine was actually pretty good. Happy to see smaller wineries like this not just making super sweet wine for the masses.
Korey R — Google review
Question: What is the best wine? Answer: The one you like. I have not aways been a fan of Iowa wines. Some that I have had are indeed made from grapes but all too often had a medicinal after taste. So at Tassel Ridge (Leighton, Iowa) I went for the wine family I like most: the dry, deep reds. I tried three: the American Merlot, Robert Duncan, and the Iowa Marquette, and I have to say that I would drink them again...and again. All three had very pleasant bouquets and a good finish. Finally, Iowa wines that did not taste a little like cough medicine. I bought two bottles. But our trip to Tassel Ridge was more than just finding and trying wines. We also enjoyed a Bistro lunch (soup, salad, sandwich). Again like the wine, very satisfying. These lunches are served M-F and on select Saturdays and Sundays. On other dates, Tassel Ridge hosts wine events. Best to check the website site for a full listing. The winery is quite large with both indoor and outdoor seating. It is clean, tastefully decorated with room to shop for wine accessories. If you are looking for a cheap Iowa wine experience, don't go. The wines are not cheap. Tassel Ridge vintners take pride in their work and the prices reflect the quality and craftsmanship of the wines and the vintners.

Marshalltown Family Aquatic Center

Public swimming pool
Water & Amusement Parks

We had planned on biking but when it was 90 degrees and humid we changed our plan to the lazy river! We were in town for the weekend and found out about this online when we googled things to do in Marshalltown. For $5 each we spent the 3 hours forgetting about the heat and having a great time floating! Yes, you have to get out of the water once a hour for 8 minutes. It gives the lifeguards a chance to jump in and cool off and it gives you time to hit the bathroom and grab a snack/drink! Totally worth it! VERY clean pool and lazy river!!!!
Leslie H — Google review
I bought some nachos and waited 10 minutes while they were giving nachos to the person who was after me, I went to buy again and they told me that it would take a maximum of 5 minutes for a hot dog and I said yes but I waited 10 because they forgot that it was there I think? when I was already there Waiting 15 minutes or more, I asked a girl if I could change it for something else because I had been waiting too long and she told me that they had been there for a while that they were ready and she apologized but I mean it’s ridiculous to wait 15/20 minutes for a single hot dog. and I wasn't the only one before me there was a boy who waited more than 30 minutes for 2 hot dogs ! :(

Fun to take the kids but it sucks getting out of the water every 20/30 minutes. Pay to swim and have fun not sit on the sidelines.

Great, enough lifeguards, fun slides, nice lazy river. We really loved our experience, went with little kids and teenagers and everybody had a blast! Also the concessions are so affordable.

The staff is disrespectful and lie. A My son took the swimming test and was told before that he had to swim from one side to the other right in front of me and the girl said its easy. Then the disrespect young guy that gave my son the test didn't tell my son anything but jump in and swim. And then when my son swam from one side to the other the guy failed him said he twisted his body too much and i watched him ecplain to my son why he failed but how was my son yo known what parameters to follow if they were not told to him then the guard lied about it right to my face and in front of the woman that i font known if she was the manager or what she was cause she didn't respectfully introduce her self and became standoffish when I pointed out three different times during our conversation on how the guard that was more worried about his phone then what was going on thats his story and information changed... and the girl at the counter kept saying its what the guards comfortable with. And the manger which like I said I assume was the lady that kept taking time out to eat her food whilst this was happening did correct her and say no its not up to the life guard but they couldn't get the story straight about my son failing and then when I was proving that there is obviously no consistency between information for everyone she kept says "what are you trying for here" still while eating... then the same guard wants to talk with his lifeguard buddies and point at me while talking about me... very unprofessional and horribly ran if you want to go to a great pool with trash staff and ran by idiocy then this might be the place for you. I'd give it no stars if I could they ruined my sons day.

Pella Historical Village & Vermeer Windmill

Mentioned on

Museum
Sights & Landmarks
The Pella Historical Village provides an opportunity to experience 19th-century life through a collection of 22 period buildings, including the childhood home of Wyatt Earp. Visitors can explore the Scholte House and Gardens, which once belonged to the founder of Pella, and take a tour of the Pella Opera House that includes an organ concert. The nearby Kalona Historical Village offers insight into the Amish and Mennonite way of life, as well as delicious treats from Kalona Bakery.
We loved this!! Beautifully laid out. Learned a ton about Dutch immigration and culture. It was great to be able to up into the Dutch windmill!! There's only 2 things I wish were different: tbat the tour allowed more time to explore the miniature village & the historical actors were available more than Tulip Days in early May. The whole town of Pella is so worth visiting.

Nice museum that shows the history of immigrants from the Netherlands who settled in 1847. There is a small house setup, water mill, bakery, kids playroom, library and more. It’s cool to walk through. At times I felt like I didn’t know which way to go next. I also wish I knew we needed quarters to feed the fish as I don’t normally carry any. Something fun to do on a nice afternoon.

Had a wonderful time at the historic village and mill. The 20$ admission fee is totally worth it! Got a guided tour of the mill, climbed up and saw the miller start and stop the mill and heard a wonderful and thorough explanation of how the mill works and the history of the Dutch heritage in Pella. The historic building are self guided and provide a great learning experience. Got to learn about the history, architecture and culture of the Dutch settelers in town in a beautiful curated museum and exhibits, as well as see the boyhood home of Waytt Earp and learn about his life. Carve out a few hours in order to truly enjoy the historical village. We had a wonderful time!

I enjoyed my tour of the village and, especially, the windmill. The village is a quiet place on a Monday in October, but it provided the opportunity to see how the gardeners prepare tulip beds for next year's festival. Also, the windmill tour, which included more than the windmill, was fascinating. The experience is definitely worth your time if you are in the area.

We drove through Pella on the Sunday after Tulip time. It was still amazing. Surprisingly, we easily found parking and I got out and walked around the main square in the center of town. Gorgeous flowers were still blooming all over 😍 I didn't get to participate in any of the events of course but we will try to make it next year- there were still a lot of people on Sunday but it was very manageable. Most things were very close together and it was pretty dang easy to walk from flower patch to flower patch! We only made it to the city center though. It was amazing! Truly beautiful!

What a wonderful experience! The area is very neat and clean. The shops are amazing and the prizes are more than affordable. I went with my fiance and we had a blast. We saw lots of tulips and tried lots of authentic foods. We are going back just to go shopping. We stopped at the old meat market and I stocked up on cheeses and some jerky. The original bologna was and is amazing! All in all, it was a great experience!
Aaron H — Google review
The historical village is nestled behind a huge windmill. We were too late to join a guided tour but you can walk the grounds independently. There is a broad assortment of displays from fully decked out rooms to regional clothing. The gift shop has a ton of gorgeous products too.
Kara J — Google review
Cute town and lots of photo ops! Definitely recommend checking this out if you're visiting Iowa. There are also lots of shops and you can spend all day here if you wanted to! Note, the main tourist shop at the Pella village closes at 5, but the remainder of the city stays open.

Had our first NASCAR experience here for the inaugural cup series. The facility is amazing. Lots of food options, the bathrooms are huge and clean, the stands are easily marked to find seats. Would love to go back and see more races!

Speedway is good, however there is only a single bathroom for the garage to use, and when sharing with a whole paddock, it becomes rather dirty over the extended time teams spend here. I was surprised there were not more porta-potties available. That was my main take away, since the other parts of the venue are fine.
Deluxe D — Google review
It was a amazing experience. The only thing that I felt could have been different is them not closing the closer parking and making it just vip on the Sunday race .Will definitely be back next yr .

Love watching NASCAR when we go to the tracks but this one isn’t as good as the others. NO outside food or drinks, besides 2 water bottles per person, which would be ok if the food/drink prices weren’t as ridiculous as they are. We got a sausage, chips and 2 drinks for $62!!!! It’s a joke. I hope NASCAR doesn’t come back after their current deal is done next year. If you’re looking for a track to watch a race don’t come here. We were very disappointed and spent way more than we wanted to.

This was a great facility, easy to figure out where you're going. Parking was fairly close. The racing there it was incredible.

Very nice track. Free parking is super easy in and out. After the IndyCar race it only took 10 min to get out and onto the interstate.
M G — Google review
Overall atmosphere is good and the facility is great, but run very poorly. Food stands advertise one thing but sell others (ie Burger with Fires, but they dont come together for the price listed). Outside the gates where the pre-race trailers and experiences are there are no bathrooms, food or beverages. You are allowed to bring in coolers, but we were made to take everything out, even water (we had 4 full water bottles, and 1 that was partially drank due to not having beverages for sale outside the gate). Inside, you cannot purchase beer without them opening them, so... You cant refill your cooler, even if you are willing to pay the $10/beer price. This is the second year they ran out of Busch Light at the Iowa race, get a clue! Over the course of the race weekend I had two EMR beer sellers yell at me and other guests for not tipping them. One continued to yell at me over the crowd as I walked away and didnt stop until I was at least 50 yards away. They reach down, pick up a beer, open it, and then hand it to me. Sounds like that should get a $2 tip? Thats what the workers direct you to give them. The setup causes people to miss the race if they want to have some beers or stay hydrated (my wife and kids made multiple trips to get water). @Iowa Speedway, why allow coolers if people cant fill them? Why are you the only track in NASCAR that doesnt allow outside beer/drinks? Why do you allow your vendors to misadvertise food, and heckle your guests for not tipping for basic services? Including a photo of the stand that was the most grossly misrepresenting their food prices, combinations and quality.

Watched Outlaw sprints run here and had a blast ! Food is average track prices. Staff was very friendly . The elevator was a very big perk to get to our seating in the top of grandstands, and it’s air conditioned ! Note … no standing up is allowed during green flag racing . You are allowed to leave your seat and move to different locations such as restroom , concessions etc. Just cannot stand in one spot for extended period of time even if you are not blocking other patrons view. It’s a track safety rule .
Cory A — Google review
Went to our first sprint car race on a Thursday evening. Fun! Negative: we had 'free' tickets from the Iowa Wild that they didn't honor, but instead did $15 off. Not the end of the world but a bummer none the less. Everything else was good. Plenty of concession choices at decent prices. Huge stands so no trouble finding seats. Good announcers. Quick and fun races to watch. Ample parking. Several restrooms. I did expect it to be dusty as it is a dirt track. What I didn't foresee was all the tire rubber flying, too! Crazy. Clear bag policy enforced. Very loud as expected but might need head phones for little kids. Nice staff. Good crowd. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Nice outing for the family.

Great dirt track racing! Track is well kept and the stands have seat backs. Love a little track dirt in the nachos!
Jeremy S — Google review
First time there. What a huge site with awesome Hall of Fame Museum too. Get there early on big race nights cause racing is action-packed and seats fill up real fast. Very clean, well managed, but close-up parking is limited and available. I really liked the extra leg room in the very large, 20.000 seat grandstand. Great Views from any seat. Good food selection and Hall of Fame workers were so very helpful. I'm big into NASCAR, but more spills and chills here for affordable price. That's why it's called "Sprint Car Capital of the World" deservingly too. Check it out. Well worth the trip. Always the best drivers there too. Anytime I have a chance to see Kyle Larson or Rico Abreu race, I'll be back next year, even after a four and one-half hour drive for me. Allow enough time to visit their museum. For $10, it's a steal and has everything.

Gotta love Praire life.. this is a great National Wildlife Preserve with multiple hiking and biking trails and a 5 mile auto tour. Buffalo and Elk viewing from the fenced area. The visitor center is currently closed from storm damage. Parking areas, vault toilet bathrooms and trails are still open for day use. I had 3 bars of Verizon 4G LTE Roaming. Parking is plentiful with room for any size rig or RV.

Featuring hiking and biking trails, bison, elk, and plenty of calming nature wilderness, the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is a great getaway just a half-hour from Ankeny. Paved and some gravel roads. Building is closed due to recent flooding. Trails range from a mile-long to 4.5 miles, and there is a five-mile auto trail. Enjoyed seeing the bison roam!
Dan E — Google review
Beautiful area that is well maintained and easy to drive through, although be warned, it's gravel to get to the bison. Visitor's Center was closed for repairs but plenty of bathrooms (outhouse style) near walking trails . The bison were so fun to watch! Plus, the babies are there! The poor car in front of us got mobbed. They were licking and rubbing on their car so be warned. Get out and enjoy nature! 🦬
Karla C — Google review
Scenic gravel and paved drive with a peaceful atmosphere, though not much to explore beyond the route itself. I didn’t spot any bison during my visit, but I did see a few elk somehow.
Connected B — Google review
It’s a unique treat to see these massive animals in Iowa. My advice is to bring binoculars in case the bison are out grazing farther away! They are such cool animals. Additionally, there are occasionally elk here too.
JC T — Google review
Worth a walk on any of the trails. Amazed by the variety of flowers and plants. Great views. No Buffalo in view today but saw a couple on way out of the park. Wish the property was open but it is open on a limited schedule. I did not find the limited schedule on the internet. Also with the facility would have better maintenance. Lots of little stuff that should be done seems to be piling up.
Ted P — Google review
wow i got to see lots of bison very beautiful area too they look so healthy and happy. 🥰😊

I am really disappointed with this place. Visitor center is still closed (August 31, 2025) after damage from a storm in the spring. As a prairie restoration it is nice. If you are local it would be worthwhile but if you drove 2 hours like we did it is not a great experience.

Adventureland Inn

Permanently Closed
Hotel
Water & Amusement Parks
The Adventureland Inn is a premier resort located just outside Des Moines that offers guests a wide range of attractions, including an inn with nearly 200 smoke-free rooms, three large pools, a swim-up bar, hot tubs and a sports bar. There is also an amusement park, water slides, and campgrounds available at the resort.
The hotel is really run down, the carpet is stained and old. The pool area appeared clean, but I wouldn't swim in that cloudy water, but I guess kids don't care. The room was clean, but the furniture is pretty run down, even staff stated the hid-a-bed was "probably broke, cause most of them are". My daughter booked the West pool area room, but the pool was not open, due to staffing shortages! :(
K S — Google review
why would you close what could be a fabulous hotel, that could be the best place for a family with young kids . Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Owners should rehab the place for next season. That's just an idea you really need to think about .
Scott R — Google review
I have found memories of Adventureland Inn, but the new owners have drove this hotel into the ground. The rooms don't have much in in them. No housekeeping, can't get fresh towels. No water pressure, impossible to wash thick hair. The beds VERY uncomfortable. The carpet in the hallways hasn't been updated in at least 30 years there is major stains all over. Unpleasant order in the room and hallways. The trolley is gone!! You either have to walk or get in you car and drive to the park. The pools were never all open open. We had a pool side room with a closed pool. How is that worth the money?! I am sad to say I will never be back. I have great memories with my children and wanted to have the great memories with my grandchildren, but the hotel is WAY TO EXPENSIVE for the poor quality. Only good thing left is the location.
Diane D — Google review
Most of hotel hasn't been updated since the day it was built 50 years ago. Rooms updated but have NO towel bars, missing TV stand/dresser. Just have a bunch of cords and power strip dangling on wall. Beds are terrible with tiny half size pillows. Our AC was noisy and only worked some of the time. Staff did nothing. Big breakfast selection but everything things was lukewarm at best and no butter? The pool was the only ok thing about it. Clean and well staffed with life guards. One day there was a sewer pumping truck parked right in front of front door loudly pumping very smelly sewage. Not making any of this up. Feel like everyone should be warned that it's not going to be a great experience.
Nathan J — Google review
Young children and young teens running up & down hallways ALL NIGHT LONG laughing & yelling at the top of their lungs! On the other side of our suite we had a balcony to pool area, for this area closing at 10pm on a weekend night I would of expected the noise level to be at a minimum. Normally I would of been asking where the parents were to the children & teens that pulled an ALL nighter and kept us up with them! I did not complain because it was the last night before the closing of the season. The front desk staff was fantastic and provided EXCELLENT customer service!!!
Jody N — Google review
We just booked the standard room so it may be different for the other rooms. First off , I just wanted to say the staff in tte lobby were all very helpful and they get 5 stars but the hotel itself just needs more maintenance done. Our filters in our rooms were packed full of dirt/dust. Which is a simple fix. Otherwise the room was cleaned pretty well. The beds are very firm. We had an elevator get stuck and would not open for a bit which is another maintenance issue. And people do not respect the quiet hours at all which is sad. The food at the bar and grill was great though! Hopefully the inn is able to fix these issues someday and update 🙏
Tonya T — Google review
The room was slightly dirty. There were hairs in the bathtub and stains on the sheets. The shampoo and conditioner bottles were half full, which was off putting to me. The employees who worked the front desk were not very friendly. It seemed as tho they didn't want to be there. The pool where our room was closed 3 hours before the posted closing time, which was a bummer for my kids and I. The location of the hotel is ideal if you're going to Adventureland. The Casino is also close by and a McDonald's right across the street. The Spectator sports bar and grill located inside the hotel was amazing. One of the best burgers I've had. Breakfast at the hotel was tasty as well. My experience here was overall okay. But for the price I paid for the room, I would have expected it to be a little cleaner.
Liz P — Google review
I’m not a huge fan of the floors not having carpet. Our room floor was dirty. The big window off the lobby going up to the second floor was covered in flies. The pool temperature was good for the kids; however, it was filled with bugs.

Reiman Gardens, established in 1995 by the University of Iowa State, is a popular 17-acre outdoor attraction featuring seasonal flowerbeds, a butterfly exhibit, sculptures, tours, and lectures. The gardens were originally planted over 100 years ago and have since become one of Ames' most beloved landmarks. Visitors can explore the vast butterfly pavilion and greenhouse showcasing exotic and endemic flowers.
Reiman Gardens is so lovely today. I have been there many times before but never saw flowers in full bloom. Today, the gardens really have a spring feel. In addition, there is an Alice in Wonderland show and many beautiful stalls.

Beautiful, well-kept gardens with a standout Butterfly Wing and fun touches like the giant gnome. Easy to enjoy in 2-3 hours, with plenty of spots to sit and friendly staff. Exhibits change seasonally, so there’s a reason to come back. Downsides: the butterfly house and paths can feel crowded at peak times or during campus events, and signage/flow could be a bit clearer. Overall, great value for a relaxed stroll, photos, or a family visit—just try to avoid ISU game days for easier parking. Solid 4 stars.

I have a membership at the Cedar Valley Arboretum, but because of reciprocal memberships I am able to visit whenever I am in the area. All the fall foliage makes me want to keep snapping photos like an incoming freshman visiting the campus for the first time. Some of the best locations for looking at fall colors are: 1) around the campanile, 2) central campus (near Pearson Hall), and 3) along Osborn Dr. If you want to avoid getting judged by others for taking pictures, there are plenty of photo opportunities at Reiman Gardens. However, be sure to take those photos quickly as peak fall colors only lasts for about a week.

To all high school seniors looking at colleges, tour Iowa State! Iowa State was pretty low on my college list but I decided to tour it anyway. Coming from Wisconsin, my first thoughts were it was a college in the middle of no where with an easy acceptance rate...sketchy. But the moment I stepped foot on campus for my college visit I knew it was the place for me. It's a division one school but the beautiful campus and friendly staff made it feel small. Iowa State was the only college I applied to and I am more than happy with that decision. The professors and advisors truly care for every student and want you to succeed. For the university being in a such a small town, there is so much to do at ISU. From intramural sports, clubs, going to sporting events, joining greek life, exploring Ames, there is so much to do. Go cyclones.

The Iowa State Capitol, located in downtown Des Moines, is a stunning example of 1800s architecture and an important landmark in the heart of the city. This legislative building boasts elegant Renaissance Revival style design with Corinthian columns and intricate cornices. The central dome, covered in 23-karat gold leaf, along with additional domes at each corner make it the only five-domed capitol in the country. The interior features luxurious furnishings including 29 types of marble.
What a gorgeous Capitol building Iowa has!!! Wow! We were honored to be guests here. My wife and I took a self-guided tour. We heard a few things on the actual tour we encountered a few times. They were friendly. The tours are lovely. We just didn’t have that much time. The law library is stunning! Don’t miss it. The Secretary of State’s office was so cool!! We saw the original Iowa state constitution. They let us see the ground floor of the 3-story vault too. Very cool! The grounds have so much to see too. What a place!!

The Iowa State Capitol was stunning from the start, its gold dome gleaming proudly above Des Moines. Inside, friendly security officers greeted us with smiles and a touch of humor, setting the tone for a great visit. The intricate tile mosaics were breathtaking, and the library was a true gem, filled with charm and small spiral staircases leading to its upper levels, making it one of the most beautiful spaces in any Capitol we’ve visited.

We went on a tour with Karen, who was a great tour guide. It is worth finding out if you can go on a guided tour instead if a self tour. She pointed out things we would never have seen and we got to go to the dome. Great tour, lovely building.

We got a guided tour and it was incredible! Julie was extremely knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. The history, the architecture, the art, it is all rich and intriguing. I can not thank Julie enough for how amazing she was at informing us of the beauty of the Capitol. Iowa, for all the times people call you an ugly state, your capitol is one of the most beautiful I have had the pleasure of being in!

This is the most beautiful state capitol I have ever seen. We had a wonderful tour and enjoyed it immensely. Its beauty reminds me of many buildings I have seen in Europe!

Great place!! Very beautiful inside and great architecture. It's free to visit. And they even offer a tour (free maybe) to go further up in the building. We didn't get to do this, but I would definitely recommend getting this booked ahead of time if you want to.

A must-visit in Des Moines. The Capitol building is stunning inside and out, with beautiful architecture and a rich history (with real gold dome). They offer free guided tours, which are very informative and well-organized. Don’t miss the amazing downtown view from the west terrace — perfect for photos 😀

Lake Ahquabi State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Park
Spacious campground, boat rentals, fishing, sandy beach & trails featured in a 770-acre preserve.
This was my first visit here and I was told that it was recently renovated. I hope in the future they will mark the path better and also provide mileage sign telling you how long the trail actually is. I have been to a few parks here and there and did not expect the trail to be as long as it was. What I thought could be maybe 2 miles was actually 4.( so you are aware) Many of the trails around the lake wind up into the Woodland area. It is very quiet with no city noise. If you love nature and a nice dirt path this place is for you! There are a few benches but not many restroom stops considering how long the trail is. (I don't know if they're going to be able to do that because it is so secluded out there.) In the summer there Canoes for rent as well as a swimming area.
C — Google review
The campground is sort of terraced on a hill, no trees in the campground, very open. The park had no trail map signs anywhere I could see. When hiking around the lake it would dump me out in the campground and I wasn’t very clear where it started back up. But as long as you keep along the lake you will find it eventually. The trail on the far side of the lake is beautiful forest to hike thru. From the beach to the campground is pretty open. A couple splits in the trail that weren’t labeled but again, keep nearest the lake. A good walk 4+ miles around
Jason C — Google review
We really enjoyed our stay here. The park was clean and well maintained. The restrooms and showers were clearly well taken care of. They have some walking trails that were also great. Most of the sites were electric only, with water spigots sprinkled throughout, but there are also full hook-up sites. For electric only, it was $20 a night. But, if you try to book starting on a Saturday, you have to book the Friday before, or it won't let you. If you have T-mobile, the service is very spotty at best. But, overall, not a bad place to stay. We'd stay here again.
Staci W — Google review
We went there for a day visit to get an idea of what the park had to offer, enjoyed a walk around the lake, and we'll be visiting again when we can rent a boat to go out on the lake. Looks like there's ample RV parking, and some tent areas as well. Definitely a fisherman's playground with plenty of outcroppings for each fisherman to fish in comfort.
Joshua D — Google review
This park has many amenities such as pavilions, canoes rentals, fishing house, camping, and etc. if it has one down side it would be the variety of the water. It is thick with plant life even in the beach area.

They just restocked it last year catfish are only about a footlong boat rentals fishbate concession stand
Rick G — Google review
If you haven't camped here recently, you should give it a try. The sites are spacious and tidy. All are reservable online. There are many full hook up sites with an excellent view of the lake. Go fishing, hiking or just sit outside and enjoy the view.

In the heart of downtown Des Moines lies the picturesque Pappajohn Sculpture Park, part of Western Gateway Park. This 4.4-acre park is home to nearly thirty stunning sculptures by esteemed artists from around the world. The collection, which opened in 2009, offers a diverse range of styles and mediums that are free for all to enjoy. Visitors can explore striking shapes and sizes that make for fantastic photos against the city's skyline.
Really enjoyed visiting the park and walk around. There was plenty of parking around and it was easy to figure out how to pay. Took me about one hour to walk around take pictures and enjoy the art...3000 steps or so
Juliana M — Google review
I wish it was a bit more interactive. Only one sculpture didn’t say “no touching” some of them were cool and creepy all at once. A nice place to stop if you have some time to waste on a beautiful day.
Andrea S — Google review
Visiting the Pappajohn Sculpture Park in Iowa was such a refreshing surprise. It’s one of those places that feels effortlessly creative — a huge open space right in downtown Des Moines where art doesn’t hide behind museum walls. Instead, it stands out in the open sky, completely approachable, giving you the freedom to walk right up to it, touch it, and see it from any angle you want. What I loved most was the variety. The sculptures are bold, modern, weird, thoughtful, playful — every few steps there’s something totally different waiting for you. Giant abstract shapes, bright metal structures, surreal creations that make you tilt your head and go, “What am I even looking at?” In the best way possible. It’s the kind of park where every piece has its own personality, but together they create a lively outdoor gallery full of energy. The space itself is beautiful. Wide green lawns, open pathways, and the Des Moines skyline as a backdrop make the whole park feel clean, open, and inviting. Whether you’re exploring every sculpture closely or just relaxing on the grass while people wander around, the atmosphere is peaceful but never boring. What really stands out is how accessible it is. No tickets, no pressure, no rushing — you can explore at your own pace, take photos, enjoy the sunshine, or simply soak in the creativity around you. Families, artists, students, tourists — everyone blends together in this shared outdoor art space. Overall, Pappajohn Sculpture Park is a genuine highlight of downtown Des Moines. Fun, free, visually striking, and filled with unique pieces that spark curiosity. It’s the perfect stop for anyone who loves art, open spaces, or just a great walk in the city.
Jasper R — Google review
8.18.25 I came across this place while visiting Des Moines for work. It says that this park is named after John and Mary Pappajohn, who are renowned art collectors. They donated the initial collection of sculptures—28 pieces valued at an estimated $40 million—to the city of Des Moines. Free to walk around and explore.
Margaret H — Google review
Nice area, we saw a family having a picnic there yesterday. It would be awesome if there was a drinking fountain and a small restroom available. I would like to see more art eventually as well or if they could bring in some seasonal sculptures on occasion that would be cool too.

Blank Park Zoo, located just fifteen minutes south of the city center, offers a year-round experience with train rides, petting areas, a carousel, concessions and more. It is larger and more diverse compared to Niabi Zoo and is within easy driving distance from Des Moines. Opened in 1966, it is the only accredited zoo in the state and houses over 1,500 mammals, birds and reptiles representing over 100 different species.
Had a super fun time. Loved the Dino theme park, got to see the seal show, enjoyed good food and did some other fun activities, kiddos had their face painted , fed the fish and goat, took a ride on the train. Just a great place to spend time with the family.

9/28/25 2nd time taking our kiddos to this zoo. The last time we went was July 2024 and had a great time! Definitely was surprised how big it got since I was in elementary school. Today was a great day coming, we got there around 10:30am and there was no line. We bought our tickets online and got to use our kids free admission tickets from the summer reading program 😍 Wasn’t super busy at all! Which made it so easy to look at each exhibit without feeling rushed by the crowd. Some attractions were closed due to the end of certain seasons. So always check online to see which ones. Was a bit disappointed that they didn’t have the sea lion training demonstration as the website states its a daily activity except for Tuesdays. My kids and I waited for 30ish minutes in the area to see the 3:15pm slot and when I finally asked, the staff member told me it was only for the summer. No worries, but please state that on your website please 🥲 Otherwise the kids of course had a great day at the zoo and loved seeing all the Dino’s as well!!! ❤️

Blank Park Zoo is a fun and family-friendly place to visit. It’s clean, well-organized, and the animals look well cared for. The staff are friendly and informative, and there are plenty of shaded areas and rest spots. A great place for a weekend trip — kids and adults will both enjoy it. However the zoo itself not too large and compare to its entry fee $20 it may not a good fit for many people.
Connected B — Google review
My family and I loved going to their Bright Lights lantern light display! It was absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. There are so many beautiful and well-crafted lighted lanterns to look at, all a variety of plants and animals. They even had some extra areas for kids, such as these lit-up swings and a music and dancing area. Definitely an experience I recommend! Well worth it and we will be back.

Nice little zoo with plenty to offer. The exhibits are interesting and the zoo has a lot of places to explore. The day I went with my group it was very hot, luckily the zoo has a bunch of tree cover. The staff were nice and answered my questions whenever we asked about the animals. The gift shop was great. Tempted myself with several shirts and got my son a couple of gifts.

Had a great time with the family viewing all the wonderful animals. Lots to see but doesn’t take all day but you could if you wanted it to. I enjoyed the wildflowers particularly, just so much color there, also the monkeys make me laugh. Clean faculty, friendly staff and lots of parking.

The Blank Park Zoo is a great family-friendly zoo! It's great to have a zoo in central Iowa that has a variety of animals, events and educational opportunities. In 2025 you can see "Dino-Park Zoo" with several animatronic dinosaur displays throughout the zoo! Membership is fairly priced with many benefits. The zoo has plans to continue expanding which will be great!
Brittany C — Google review
The Dino exhibit is great. Good photo opportunity. We brought our own snacks. Zoo is small enough that the four-year-old walked the whole way. She was greatly entertained by the carousel. The two-year-old loved the train ride. If you can avoid bringing the colossal wagon that would be great for the rest of us. An umbrella stroller and a back pack was sufficient for our needs. We chose the $5 glitter tattoo. The kids loved it. My favorite was watching the penguins getting fed. Cute little things. Or maybe the beautiful white peacock.. The next time we visit I'll turn left at the beginning. Spending more time on the exhibits we skimmed at the end.

My husband and I decided to take the Wolf Dinner Train for date night, and it did not disappoint! Great atmosphere, wonderful service, delicious food (I chose the porkchop dinner option, and he had the mushroom and spinach lasagna), and beautiful views. The operator was friendly and knowledgeable. He has been working there for years as a volunteer and was able to answer any and all questions we had, as well as pointing out landmarks and wildlife we passed. They stopped the train a few times, once so anyone who wanted to come out on the platform at the back to view the high trestle bridge we went over and again when we crossed the river. We loved our evening and hadn't even headed back before we started to plan when next we would come. We can not recommend it highly enough!

I'm big fan of trains, so this place was amazing to me. Excellent displays in the museum, sadly you cannot take any pictures of them. So I can't share any pictures of the displays. We did the Thomas the train ride with the kids and grandkids. Nice short ride, kept the kids occupied really well.

Really neat museum & train excursion. Knowledgable volunteers who are very passionate about trains and very friendly. The train tide was pretty neat but as others said, you can't see past cloves by trees in some areas. We did not do a ride that included a meal, so no climate control cars. I think if it got to be 90° outside, the ride would be quite hot.

Clark Tower Park in Winterset, Iowa is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts. The park offers a range of activities including hiking, fishing, and boating at Lakeview Park. Visitors can also take a leisurely stroll through Pammel Park or explore the famous covered bridges nearby. At Clark Tower itself, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding area from this 25-foot limestone castle built in 1926.
Neat little look out tower. After doing some research I found out that the Clark's are the OG settlers of Winterset, IA. If you are in the area looking at covered bridges I highly recommend making a stop here and taking in the views. I give it a 9/10 simply because some jagweed decided he was cooler than the view and had a house built right where the best view is. So now you have see his house and it's in all your pix too. Thanks, Richard.

What a fun park. Not only can you see one of the bridges of Madison County, but they have maze and a 2 mile wooded drive that leads you to the Clark tower. If you're out this way, it's definitely work the time to visit.

This was had such a great view of the area. While it might be only 25 ft tall and erected in 1926 it was very well made. I understand that on March 5, 2022, Clark Tower was struck by a powerful EF4 and survived.

If you're in Winterset, IA dedicate an hour of visiting the Clark Tower, by foot or by car/motorcycle if the season allows it. It doesn't have "great" view but it's charming little tower - especially for people with imagination 😃 And Photographers can have nice photo shooting.

I’ve been to this park twice — once I hiked to the tower, and the second time I drove there. The road leading to the tower is full of curves, so I prefer hiking over driving. It’s a beautiful place, and on the way there, there’s a kids' park where children can play and a shelter where you can sit and have a picnic.

Located in Winterset, Iowa, the John Wayne Birthplace Museum is a must-visit for fans of the legendary actor. It's the only museum in the world dedicated to John Wayne and offers an award-winning experience. While in Winterset, visitors can also explore other attractions such as the Madison County Historical Complex, Iowa Quilt Museum, and historic Iowa Theater. Nature enthusiasts can head to Pammel State Park for outdoor activities like canoeing, kayaking, and hiking.
As a long-time John Wayne movie lover, this is a must-see museum. They have an amazing display of his life history. My wife and I brought three of our oldest grandchildren ages 15 - 10. They learned why their grandfather likes John Wayne movies and the man he was and that he believed that America was the best place to live in.

I truly enjoyed the museum. The movie is worth watching. I just expected there to be more to see After an hour and 15 minutes, we'd seen & read everything including his birth home. At $20/pp, I felt the entry fee was high.

We brought my father in-law so he could experience this national treasure and we had a wonderful time. I myself didn't know much about John Wayne before this trip but now am looking forward to watching his movies because this museum does such a great job giving you a history of his life. The museum is located in the beautiful town of Winterset so make sure you give yourself time to explore town and the covered bridges.

I’m not particularly a fan of the Duke nor have I really ever seen any of his movies. What I do love is learning weird stuff and being around people who are passionate about their trade. This checks both those boxes. Great group of people that help guide you through the exhibits and let you know interesting tidbits. Several rooms of exhibits and the legit house he was born in. If I was a superfan, or maybe even a fan this would have been a 10 out of 5.

Begin your day at the Madison County Chamber of Commerce's Welcome Center, situated in Winterset's charming town square. Here, you can obtain a complimentary map pinpointing the six covered bridges in the county and other local attractions. The center also offers public restrooms, locally-made products, and souvenirs including wines from Madison County's three wineries. If you need assistance planning your visit or arranging guided tours of the covered bridges, the chamber is ready to help.
We made our way into Winterset as our launch point for the Bridges of Madison County. The staff here is super friendly and knowledgeable. They pointed out some absolute gems on the town square that surrounds the Madison County Courthouse, including The Bakery Unlimited for donuts & coffee, the Winterset Mural where you can take some pictures in themed murals, Quest Haven Books & Comics for our nerdy sons, some shopping spots, and Urban Plate for an amazing lunch. They then recommended that we head to Winterset City Park to see the Cutler-Donahoe Covered Bridge and Clark Tower, both of which were beautiful. While I wish we could have seen more, we made our way to the Holliwell Covered Bridge, Roseman Covered Bridge, Cedar Covered Bridge, and Hogback Covered Bridge. They did not disappoint! Lastly, they recommended we visit the Covered Bridges Winery where we had some surprisingly good tastings and snacks. It was a full day and we appreciate all of the spots that the staff here recommended.

Hands down the best Visitor Center we have ever been to, and we live full-time on the road in our rv. We left this one with a wealth of information, and I like to think, a couple of new friends. We were happy to see her again on Wednesday night at the movie theatre.

Leslie was working on Saturday morning and she was so helpful. She made excellent suggestions of things to see. She spent more time then she had to talking with me, my husband, and our puppy Mondo. Everything that she suggested was worth the stop. Leslie was friendly, knowledgeable, and just awesome! Thank you for making our visit to Madison County one to remember.

We came to do a tour of the bridges not knowing that you had to call ahead first and set up the 2 hour tour. But they got us the most fantastic guide. His name was Bob and he was an extra in the film as well has being born and raised there. He showed us so much more than just the bridges!! We went past John Wayne's house and down back roads that the other tour guides did not know. He was a wealth of information and really made it fun!!!

Great effort by those businesses participating in your first “live action” windows! The courthouse was festive, the carriage ride added to the sounds of night, most storefronts were beautifully decorated, and the ones who included real people and pets were wonderful! Those businesses creating action windows not only put the time and effort into their design, they were ALL SO GRACIOUS in sharing their enthusiasm for the holidays with visitors and patrons! I don’t what your criteria is for making it an annual tradition, but please remember it warmed the hearts and brought a lot of holiday cheer to those who attended. It’s something that could become a long-standing seasonal tradition and bring many benefits for Winterset /Madison County. Congratulations on your collective efforts!

Historic Roseman Covered Bridge

Historical landmark
We visited the Roseman Covered Bridge on a weekend and were pleasantly surprised by how peaceful and quiet it was, not many people around, which made the experience even more special. The bridge itself is beautifully preserved and full of history, especially for fans of The Bridges of Madison County. It’s a scenic little spot surrounded by nature, perfect for a calm walk and a few great photo ops. There’s also a small gift shop nearby with some charming local items and info on the bridge’s past. If you’re in the area, it’s absolutely worth the detour!

Made famous by the movie, Bridges of Madison County, the Roseman bridge stands as a tribute to the ingenuity, craftsmanship and architectural design, of the late 1800’s. Now grant it, it has a rather cheesy gift shop, the beauty of this structure and its surroundings are simply beautiful. A must see. There are several other covered bridges in the area that are just as beautiful and significant as the Roseman bridge. We will return when our adventures bring us in search of all covered bridges, especially those of Madison County.

A beautiful stop to visit and take pictures. This is a good remembrance of days gone by. There is lots of graffiti on the walls, mainly who was here and where they are from. You can also launch your kayak from this bridge.

This is a very beautiful and iconic place. I learned about this bridge through the book “Bridges of Madison County.” This is the second time I have ever been there. Since it was Halloween, we decided to take some fun pics.

We visited five of the remaining six Bridges of Madison County. It was a relaxing drive. Some of it is on flat roads while other parts over dusty, loose gravel. The bridges have informative plaques that indicate whether or not the bridge is still in its original location. The county used to have 100+ of these covered bridges, but most were decommissioned, disassembled or burned down. Several of the bridges have tanks of fire repellent ready in the rafters.

If you’re a fan of the book/movie, you’ll love it. If you’re a covered bridge fan, you’ll love it. Plan your trip to arrive at dawn or dusk. We had the perfect light and it was spectacular.

Nice old Covered Bridge. Info kiosk nearby with all the history of the bridge. Part of the Iowa covered bridge scenic Highway. If you drive a pavment princesses you might want to pass because you do have to travel along dirt roads. I had no issues getting there in a Toyota camry

Lovely cover d bridge. Having seen "The Bridges of Madison County", I felt a connection that I wouldn't have felt otherwise.
