Amerson River Park

Park
Nature & Parks
Amerson River Park is a vast natural oasis spanning 180 acres, boasting woodlands, wetlands, and meadows. The park has been recently renovated with a multi-million dollar project, offering an immaculate wilderness experience. Visitors can enjoy picnics by the Ocmulgee River and explore the waters via canoe. Additionally, there are over 3.5 miles of walking trails that wind through tranquil woodland areas, providing opportunities to escape the city for a peaceful half-hour stroll.
Amazing park created where the water treatment plant used to be before a big flood in the early 90s. I love that there is a big paved loop path that is accessible as well as more “off road” hiking trails by the river and a pond. There is also a playground my kids love, plenty of parking, and a bathroom. Great views of the river! Bring bug spray if you go on the trails near the water, as the area is heavily wooded and there is lots of wildlife.
Hannah S — Google review
This is generally a clean park although there were a couple places where other people were smoking marijuana, which was not enjoyable to walk through. There are pavilions and overlooks here and plenty of space to hang out or walk or jog. There are a lot of memorials here where people drowned in the river so be super careful of the water here
B — Google review
Great off trail hiking with beautiful river views. Pavement trails available for those who prefer to walk, cycle, run & etc. They also provide an exercise circuit available free for those interested in working out & kids play ground. Safe & clean. Recommend for all ages
Wanda E — Google review
Very nice park, it’s clean, quiet and relaxing. They also have a park gym and area for tubing. My walk around was 30mins they also have small trails that’s connected to the big trail. I went in the morning, and it’s shaded and paved!

It was my first time visiting Amerson River Park with our CHOSEN life group, and I will personally be back . This park is a little hidden gem tucked away in North Macon. Gorgeous. Most of the trails are shaded by overlapping trees and It is filled with beautiful views of the river. There is a park for the children to play and pavilions for gatherings. At every turn there is picture worthy scenery for a morning walk, golfing, or a special event. A must see.
Tessany L — Google review
I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel compelled to speak up today because I truly care about our city. My husband and I have lived in Macon for nearly 10 years, and one of our favorite places has always been Amerson Park. We've enjoyed many peaceful walks along the river and have always admired how beautiful and well-maintained the park has been—until now. Today, we took our one-year-old grandson to the playground and were heartbroken to see how neglected this part of the park has become. The slide was broken in a way that could easily cause serious injury, and there was a hole in the flooring large enough for a child to trip or fall through. There were no baby swings available, and the existing swings were not only old and noisy but seemed unsafe. Worse, the playground itself was dirty, and mold was visibly growing on the shade structures. I’m not writing this to complain, but to raise awareness. This park is a gem in our community, and it deserves attention—especially the areas meant for our youngest citizens. Our children deserve a safe, clean, and fun place to play. I sincerely hope someone in the parks department sees this and takes action. We love Amerson Park and want to continue visiting it with our children and grandchildren, knowing they are safe and cared for. Thank you for listening

I planned on going rock hounding unfortunately this place was not what I was looking for. However, it was a beautiful place for a good walk with friendly people.

The trails are great and I love using the free fitness equipment. My daughter has a great time at the playgrounds. I do wish the view of the river from the pavilions was cleared out.

Historic Uncle Remus Museum

Museum

This was an absolute treat and emotionally joyous visit for me. I feel beyond grateful that this museum exists. It truly keeps the spire of Uncle Remus alive. Once I discovered of its existence I had to make it a top go-to visit! The kind lady was very informative and highly knowledgeable of the museums history.
Campeon M — Google review
A forgotten part of American history that is a must see for those who like an off the beaten oath adventure. This isn't a grandeur adventure but a simple educational and fun part of american history that Disney made a movie about. The grounds are well maintained, the information and presentation is excellent and if you stop and shut off the world, take in all the you're standing in front of, it may really just hit you what the grounds really were and who the man was.
David W — Google review
Although we arrived late in the afternoon, the lady behind the plexiglass screen seemed a little put off by our presence in her museum as it was a quarter to five and she was closing at five. No worries, we will be back at an earlier time so enjoy the place without being rushed.
Tom K — Google review
We visited the Historic Uncle Remus Museum. Dedicated to the author of the Uncle Remus stories, Joel Chandler Harris, who wrote down his recollection of the stories told to him by elder African Americans. Our experience, however, was affected by the tales of our tour guide, Georgia, who seemed more interested in telling her own life history. Apparently, she imagined herself as one of the authors characters! When she asked for a $25 fee, instead of the $5 posted fee, I assumed she was simply in character. As Uncle Remus would say, "Still an’ all, we’d a liked to linger longer, readin’ dem placards and learnin’ why folks from all over come to hear 'bout Uncle Remus and his critter tales. But Georgia’s story done stole de spotlight, and we moseyed on, scratchin’ our heads and smilin’ at de memory."

The docent was so charming and knowledgeable. She alone made rhe trip both the drive. They have many wonderful pieces to ad.ire.

Enjoyed a wonderful tour of this 1811 home. Tours cost $10 and for $5 more you can tour two other homes in the area. We had a really nice docent lead us in a personal tour of the house. We really enjoyed that the story of slavery was a major theme of the tour. For example, I had never heard of a "whispering staircase." Tours last around 35 minutes and parking is easy. We parked a couple blocks away downtown and enjoyed the walk over.

Our tour guide was amazing. She answered questions before I could answer. She was very personable

Lovely, well preserved old mansion that contains period pieces in every room throughout the house, Excellent 1 hour docent lead tour full of interesting information. Worth a visit. Tours on the hour.
Curt S — Google review
Learned a lot to visit this house and two other houses. Docents talked about history and culture. Highly recommended!
Lili Z — Google review
Such a historically beautiful place to be. The tour guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. Such interesting history.
Mary B — Google review
This tour is amazing! The home is very nicely furnished and you even get to tour the upstairs(which a lot of homes don’t allow). Our guide Lisa P was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the history of this home. I could have sat and listened to her all day!! I hope to return and bring some friends and will definitely request Lisa P. Don’t miss this tour while visiting Madison!!
Judy K — Google review
One of the best house tours I’ve ever been on. Lisa was our guide and her knowledge was incredible, her obvious love of history was infectious, and she brought to life stories from so long ago! Worth every penny!

This is a very welcoming visitor center! They will give you a guide of this historic town. We followed the walking tour guide and it was very beautiful!
Clinton H — Google review
Very friendly & helpful; she gave great recommendations for restaurants, shops, & activities. Madison's historic district is idyllic & well kept up. Everywhere we went, everyone was so kind & helpful. I could see the pride & joy they had in their town. We went to two different coffee shops & both times the coffee was delicious. I had soul food for the first time & it was perfect. We ate our way through in scrumptious pastries & chocolates. I even found red hot candies in the ice cream shop; long time searching for. I would highly recommend the walking tour to get a feel of the town & history. My favorite stop was the old part of the cemetery. I would definitely come back! 10/10!
Katie S — Google review
Staff were very knowledgeable about the area. They knew about events and were very helpful with directions.
Lisa D — Google review
Beautiful and pristine Southern town with much to see and do. Homes and downtown are something out of Norman Rockwell with a Southern flair. We visited in the Fall and the autumn colors were beautiful. Some excellent shopping venues and very courteous sales folks. One caveat, the majority of the nicer restaurants are closed on Sunday and Monday so if you are a foodie may want to plan your trip Tuesday thru Saturday.
Jerrmorr — Google review
Mary Kay was friendly and very helpful. She shared a variety of activities to do in Madison. We ended up at the Rogers House/Rose Cottage. Ben, the tour guide, was fabulous. He shared all kinds of trivia and many historical facts about the homes. We ended up spending almost two hours there and learned much. Looking forward to going back to Madison on a sunny day to visit the historical cemetery as well as the tour of historical homes.

This is a great place to learn about Madison, Georgia's local history. The lady who works at the desk is very knowledgeable and kind. It is the only public restroom in town...so, I'm certain we will be going back if we ever frequent Madison, Georgia again.

Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion

History museum
Sights & Landmarks
19th-century Greek Revival mansion & history museum, featuring guided tours & a gift shop.
Took a lazy Saturday to visit nearby Milledgeville to visit the former Governors mansion. There were no other guests, so it became a one-on-one excursion through the mansion. Very well-informed docent and a thorough trip through the home. I highly recommend this trip while in Milledgeville.
Doug W — Google review
Great place to visit lots of history, friendly staff Kaylee was our tour guide. She was awesome.
David R — Google review
Tour guided docent was very knowledgeable and explained artifacts and stories of past Georgia governors who occupied the mansion. From the lower level where the enslaved workers worked to the upstairs bedrooms and nursery. Well done.
Nick M — Google review
The mansion is beautiful, though I arrived too late for a tour, I hope to come back again and tour on another day. I did spend some time in the little gift shop, the staff person was very pleasant and helpful. I was little disappointed at the book selection. I had hopped to pick up a book on local Milledgeville history and there was none. Another warning, parking in the town is a challenge.
Troy A — Google review
This historic house is very beautiful inside and out. The tour was very well narrated by Cooper. It was informative and he was rather knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour with my wife. We encourage all history lovers to come out and tour this historic home.
Siggy T — Google review
Beautiful building and during the Christmas time it was well decorated… Do not miss this place while you are visiting Milledgeville. It is one of the finest example of high Greek revival architecture in the Georgia. The Mansion is fully ADA complaint.
Lila B — Google review
A solid five star activity. Great mansion with 1800s decorations. At Christmas they incorporate holiday decorations and a spectacular tree. Nice video to start with and a casual, informative guide takes you through all three levels of the mansion. Great value at $7-10 a person, and worth the effort to get to Milledgeville. Also try to include a tour of Andalusia a few miles away.
Simon R — Google review
This is a great museum experience. Our docent, Ashley, was an excellent guide. The furniture is 25% original, and the mansion is laid out nearly the same as when it was occupied by Governor Cobb, thanks to detailed records by his wife. The air conditioner works quite well, making this an excellent place to escape the heat when visiting in summer. Senior, military, child, and student pricing available. Free admission for Georgia College students and staff.

The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee

Hotel
Outdoor Activities
Golf Courses
Refined rooms in an elegant hotel featuring a steakhouse, a spa & indoor & outdoor pools.
Beautiful resort located an hour east of Atlanta. A nice way to end our spring break trip to Atlanta. The resort is beautiful with nice walking trails. My daughter loved fishing on the lake and catching tiny fish. The pool is a peaceful even though there are many families at the resort. The restaurant is excellent and highly recommended dinner option. The nightly smores are a highly for the young (and old).
Chris W — Google review
Great service, clean rooms, awesome location! This was an awesome stay and my family really enjoyed it. The highlight was probably the nighttime s'mores, family pool, and access to the golf range to hit some balls. Next time I would love to play a round but with kids and this being a family trip, I was not able to get beyond the driving range on this trip. The golf range is a short walking distance from the hotel so it was convenient. The s'mores was a lot of fun but some of the other kids were being a little dangerous....lighting up the sticks with fire and running around with fire, etc. I suppose the adults should have supervised their children a little better but there was one dad who kept telling his pyro daughter to stop and let's go back and the little girl kept saying "wow, I never knew I liked fire this much...why go back when it's so nice out here?" And she'd continue running around after setting her stick on fire. I'm glad nobody got hurt though with the few kids running around and playing with fire. As a Marriott Platinum member, I wasn't sure if this included anything. I didn't think so but my status wasn't acknowledged nor any information provided. I just assumed that I get nothing (no breakfast benefit, etc.) and left it at that. Overall it was a nice stay and I hope to stay longer next time and also get a few rounds of golf in!

This was not my first stay at The Ritz-Carlton at Reynolds on Lake Oconee. Each return visit deepens my appreciation for what this lakeside sanctuary continues to perfect: the seamless union of natural beauty, meticulous hospitality, and emotional restoration. From the moment I arrived, the setting worked its magic. The air smelled of pine and water, and the lake shimmered under a soft Georgia sun. One of my favorite parts of every visit remains the outdoors: long bike rides that wind through whispering trails, slow walks under canopies of trees, and that calming sense that time finally releases its grip once you step onto the property. Our room overlooked a lush pocket of forest and partial lake view. It was immaculate, tranquil, and intuitively arranged for relaxation. The linens felt fresh and cool; the lighting warm and understated and the balcony invited morning coffee with perfect solitude. The Club Lounge continues to be the resort’s masterpiece. Its lakeside design feels like nature brought indoors with the soft-toned wood and glass that mirrors the trees. Tynesha in the Club runs a great Club and leads her team with grace. Her awareness of each guest’s mood and preferences sets the tone for the whole team. Laura’s breakfasts are pure ritual, as she remembers preferences before you even speak them. Ashley anticipates your next move before you make it, saving your favorite seat or drink or food. Olga, Mia, and Jewell perfect the art of invisible service: glasses refilled without interruption, plates cleared with a whisper. Every encounter felt personal, never rehearsed. They all have wonderful personalities and service. No trip here feels complete without the spa, and this visit raised my admiration even higher. The moment you enter, calm takes physical form through the soft lighting, subtle scent, and the sound of water running somewhere nearby. Sandra’s massage approach is intuitive. She knows the body and reads tension like a language, using firm, deliberate strokes followed by lighter, rhythmic movements that feel both scientific and spiritual. I left certain I’d stay high off that experience for weeks. The rest of the spa team… Jess, Janice, Donna, Ashanti, and Jada operate with quiet synchronicity. Jess handled my honey body wrap with care and detail, checking pressure and warmth with precision. Janice, Donna, Ashanti, and Jada’s attentiveness between treatments ensured every transition stayed peaceful. They continuously greeted me with infused water and an unspoken understanding that silence was still the best gift. Together, they created a wellness experience that felt designed just for me. I also attended Renee’s yoga and stretch classes which I’ll make a non-negotiable for every future stay. Renee blends physical challenge with true mindfulness, her calm voice guiding every posture until the entire room feels aligned with the stillness outside. The flow of her classes left me restored in a different way than the spa: strong, present, and alive. Each time I leave this property, I carry the same feeling: gratitude mixed with disbelief that such a place exists within driving distance of everyday life. The Club Lounge nourishes connection, the spa rewires your nervous system, and the grounds invite you to rediscover nature. Tynesha, Laura, Ashley, Olga, Mia, Jewell, Janice, Donna, Jess, Ashanti, Jada, Sandra, and Renee—each of you defines excellence in your own lane, yet together you represent the living heartbeat of the Ritz-Carlton because you make luxury human.

The sevice is spectacular. The food is delicious. The resort is full of little spots to discover and spend time in. It has something for everyone. There is a full pool with a splash pad for little kids, and an infinity pool with a jacuzzi for people over 13 years old. There is a play structure, swings, play areas and a Ritz kids club. The lake is wonderful and there are chairs for you to spend your time on. Of course you can order food and drinks to your chair, as well as fresh towels. There are plenty of food options on site and it is all delicious. My favorite dish was from room service and it was the Gnocchi. Can’t wait to have it again! There are bikes to rent on the property and lush hiking and biking trails. If you like to golf, there is that too. Everybody on staff was super friendly. Loved it!

Beware of your items or money getting stolen! We had a great stay last weekend for two nights for a getaway. Enjoyed the staff, the food, and atmosphere. Unfortunately, I did leave my purse after check out. The good news is the team quickly found it and sent it to me. Bad news is $100 was stolen out of the purse so beware, seems like if opportunity presents itself your items or money will get stolen from staff here.
Alisha R — Google review
People who work there are very kind and very talented. How do you give the room a 2/5 rating. Beautiful suite nicely appointed over looking a lake. I got a suite to not disturb my spouse being I am very early riser and she is later. Heavy sliding barn doors makes it impossible to go from bathroom back out and into suite quietly. Doors do not provide noise buffer either when closed. Coffee machine is like a freight train coming. Best of all is how the Ritz overcharges for the room and then continues to overcharge for everything. Example we made it clear this was our 43 anniversary and nothing extra just words of congratulations. No drink at overpriced meals, no desserts, nothing offered at all. I wanted to do the pizza making class but saw it was overpriced at $150. So I asked my wife and I would like todo one together for $150. No sorry $300. Funniest part of this will be when the Ritz exec writes back and says sorry you felt that way hope we do better in the future. I guess they have plenty of people who pay regardless. The Ritz exception is Ritz Amelia Island when they know it is your anniversary and birthday they make you feel like the most important person at their restaurant. Come take a lesson Ritz Reynolds.

From the moment we arrived, everything about our stay at this hotel was exceptional. The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. Every staff member went out of their way to make us feel at home — from the front desk to housekeeping to the restaurant staff. The amenities were just as impressive: a serene spa, a sparkling pool, and a well-equipped gym. Every corner of the hotel was thoughtfully designed for both relaxation and indulgence.

The Spa at The Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee

Spa
Spas & Wellness
This was the first spa treatment that I had after several stays at the Ritz Carlton on Lake Oconee. Every second of my experience at the spa was truly fantastic and well worth the money. The 50 minute facial By Wendy was the best I ever had. Thank you for an amazing experience.

I spent my Birthday at the spa, and they treated me like a queen. The services were superb. The staff were so kind and accommodating. I enjoyed the entire day on the property. The spa was extremely clean organized very calm environment that you expect when you visit a spa. There were not a lot of loud bridal parties. The sauna, and stream room were awesome, and the pool was incredible. The grounds around the spa were so comfortable there were multiple area to sit outside and take in the views of Lake Oconee. I would highly recommend visiting The spa at The Ritz Lake Oconee

What a great experience. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The gym, pool, spa are all top notch.

I expected a luxury pedicure. Pro’s - the water stayed hot and friendly staff. Con’s very little luxury. She didn’t really rub my legs or feet at all. She did offer hot towels but that should be a minimum. It was just a polish change and hot water soak. For 100.00 or more I was expecting something more. Maybe the massages are better.
Dana M — Google review
Visited the spa while staying at the Ritz with my wife for our 18th anniversary. The facilities are nice and, although rather small, I enjoyed the dry sauna and jacuzzi (there's also a steam sauna and a cold bath but I didn't partake in those). The indoor heated pool is pretty huge and also looked great. Staff are very friendly. I booked a 50-minute massage, which is expectedly pricey (~$200 after tip I believe it was), but the therapist was very good—experienced and knowledgeable. It is worth mentioning that Ritz guests have access to the spa amenities (all areas) even if they have not booked a treatment, which is quite nice. Certainly not the biggest or fanciest spa I've been in (Westglow and Grove Park Inn comes to mind) but it's up to par nonetheless.
Steve S — Google review
Starting with the gorgeous setting and ending with one of the best massages I've ever had, my trip to lake oconee was memorable and relaxing. Touring the grounds and having lunch on the water was the perfect intro to the day. A dip in the whirlpool started warming me up for a fabulous spa service. I even purchased some products in the store on the way out, everything smelled so wonderful. All the staff was warm and welcoming. A terrific respite from the city
Alice G — Google review
The spa is amazing. They have very good services and service provider. Although they spent 1 year during COVID renovating the hotel - the spa veritably deserves a little pampering itself. For the premium cost you expect to pay at a Ritz - the spa is NOT a five star property - but does offer five star services.

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia

Botanical garden
Nature & Parks
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a vast 313-acre horticultural conservatory that offers free admission to visitors. The garden boasts picturesque walking paths and provides educational programs for both adults and children. While some negative reviews exist, the gardens are well-prepared during winter and offer an excellent opportunity for photography. There's ample parking available, although it might get crowded on weekends. Visitors can donate if they wish to support the establishment, with a small donation box located near the entrance.
It's Free. A very beautiful garden. It's huge. A great place to take pictures. Great views of flowers and plants. Nature at its best. I recommend this place. We went during our trip to Atlanta. We made the drive out there not too bad, about an hour or so.

Visiting the State Botanical Garden of Georgia during Christmas was honestly such a peaceful and magical experience. The lights throughout the garden added this soft, warm glow that made everything feel a little extra special—like a quiet winter wonderland tucked into Athens. It wasn’t overly crowded, which made it easy to stroll through the paths, take in all the decorated trees and glowing displays, and just enjoy the calm. If you love holiday vibes but want something more serene than chaotic, this place is such a sweet spot. Plus, the lights reflecting off the plants and walkways made for some really pretty photos without even trying. A cozy, festive little escape that felt equal parts relaxing and joyful.

This past weekend I was visiting my alma mater, The University of Georgia. I got my master's there in 1999 and haven't really been back since. My first daughter was little when we were there and we take her for hikes in the Botanical Garden. Back then there was one little garden and the conservatory was brand new. Today the gardens have grown! Not only have the plants nature's, but there's now many different gardens. I'm not much of a gardener so I won't pretend, but I can say they're all beautiful. The conservatory is the same, but it's got a partner building that houses the most amazing and beautiful porcelain collection. Again, I'm not much into dishes or figurines, but to imagine that one person collected all of this stirs the imagination. It sounds boring, but trust me it's a must see. I went to relieve the holes we took with my daughter, and I found a wonderful fairy land of plants and new experiences. If you get to Athens GA for any reason, the State Botanical Garden is good couple of hours experience, more of your into plants!

It’s free 😀 but it would be worth visiting even if it wasn’t! Pick a beautiful day and head out for a relaxing time surrounded by beautiful plants. There are also a lot of fun facts on the signs I found really intriguing, and I’m no plant nerd. So many different types of plants and environments, with the hill of wildflowers especially amazing! Also go visit the porcelain museum—I thought it sounded lame but it is also really neat!

Beautiful gardens with plenty of parking. No entry fee, but donations accepted. There's a gift shop. What they really need is a cafe or at least a snack bar. We enjoyed our visit.

Couldn't possibly do this place justice with words. Go! Bring a picnic. Bring everyone you know. This was a revelation in what a community can provide for it's residents and visitors. I have paid large sums to have less fun and relaxation. The children's garden and flying squirrels nest are not to be missed. Perfectly manicured and curated ornamental gardens on a sprawling, truly gorgeous property.
Yona G — Google review
This place is absolutely awesome! The children's area is amazing, and my 3-year-old enjoys playing there. Entrance is free, but donations are encouraged. I also took my elderly mother there, and they provided a scooter for her to enjoy (check the website for details on availability). Overall, an amazing place, and I recommend everyone visit.
S H — Google review
It is really nice. If you like plants or just nice scenic trails to walk on, you will like this place. There are also a couple of play areas for kids that look pretty awesome too. The pocelain museum onsite is worth a visit too - it is pretty amazing, and no it is not porcelain toilets. Honestly I think this place should charge admission. The outdoor areas are on par with the Atlanta Botanical gardens in my opinion, and Atlanta Botanical is a bit pricey on the admission. I have attached a picture of the map for those who would like to see the layout. Its a pretty big place. I spent about 3 hours there.

Iron Horse

Points of Interest & Landmarks
I interacted with the most genuine and considerate individual at my recent visit at the Iron Horse Headquarters property... I believe her name was Carol, she monitors the safety and security of the property on a ATV of some sort. My front brakes locked up on me while I was on my way to South Georgia, just happened to happen right in front of the Iron Horse. I had no choice but to pull over onto the main dirt drive leading to the property. My companion and myself were stranded there for 9 hours before we could get a ride. All day we spent on the phone or under the truck. kept checking on us. Of course she was concerned about us being there on the property, but she also brought us water and crackers on 2 occasions. Not to mention she was helpful with instructions to help me out, because I had to leave my vehicle there. There are still good people in the world. Just few and far between. Sincerely, J. Lord

It is what it is. They found this sculpture while cleaning out a warehouse and have put it on display in their field at their beautiful farm! So cool that they allow people to stop and park to view. It’s much larger than it looks in pictures.

The iron horse has made its return. Fresh welds new pedestal Fresh coat of paint new placards and signage. Do yourself a favor head out down Highway 15 stop going to see the Iron Horse what an Athens tradition
Eric V — Google review
Fifty years ago, as an undergrad at UGA, the Iron Horse was a shocking delight, discovered unexpectedly while driving down a rural 2-lane road. He was sitting out in the middle of a farm field, surrounded by other farm fields, and for a moment I thought I'd hallucinated him--turned the VW bus around, pulled over, and just sat there, basking in his magnificence and the oddity of HIM in a farm field kinda in the middle of nowhere. Visited many more times over the next decade, and driving out to say goodbye was part of my leave taking ritual when I got my final degree and moved away. Forty years later, both he and we have found new homes in the Athens area, and it was soul-feeding to go see him in his new field--this time up close because he's in a UGA-owned field that is just for him, and visitors can walk through the field and right up to him. Signs are posted all around prohibiting climbing on him, and I'm saddened and outraged by what I expect was a reactive necessity. I feel quite protective of *my* horse who has had such a checkered history, and am happy to see him in a fitting new home. He's well-worth the drive, and I'm hoping to see him often.
FJ C — Google review
Well worth a stop if you are on GA 15 between Watkinsville and Greensboro. Look out for the UGA Iron Horse Farms. The contemporary steel horse structure is located a hundred feet off the road offers ample, well designed parking and is an easy 2-3 minutes walk.

Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail is a 225-acre park featuring woodlands, wetlands, and a historic cabin. The visitors' center offers interactive exhibits for the public to enjoy. Currently undergoing renovations, the park has new fences that look much better than the old ones. However, some of the gates were locked which caused concern among visitors. The animal sanctuaries are in poor condition and resemble Yellow River Game Ranch during its decline.
Great family place! Lots of saved animals and great views. Even had my sons 10th birthday there! They brought out 3 different animals for them to pet and learn about.

Will laid out Sanctuary for non-returnable to the wild animals nice winding paved trail leading passed many different habitats including black bear river otter bald eagle and whitetail deer Plus two species of owl and wild turkey unfortunately some of the habitats were unoccupied ,several of the reptiles were not visible due to the cool temperature. a great place for an outing with the family, especially if you have young children. The staff were very friendly and informative donations are accepted I did not see any entrance fee listed

Enjoyable little free zoo. Very hot day to visit. Felt bad for some of the animals due to the heat. Never saw the fox, river otter,or spotted fox. Maybe they were hiding to beat the heat.
BRAD B — Google review
We came 30 minutes prior to closing my daughter really enjoyed it a ton on the left before you reach parking they also have a playground great for toddlers and what looks like a dog park but no pets in zoo part.
Tippy E — Google review
Small, but seems to be well kept. Quiet. Fun to watch the animals!
Jennie W — Google review
It's more like a wildlife preserve than a zoo, but it is still really nice! It's well kept. They seem to be doing some renovations, but that's always a good sign. The animals were mostly napping when we went, but the few that weren't were amazing to see and observe. They also give facts about the species, and they tell you exactly what you're looking at. The bald eagle was my absolute favorite. They even had turkeys, which was nice to see just to see not for sport. My daughter liked it too. She's loves animals. Best part is it is free!
Corey G — Google review
Small rehab zoo with free entry. Otters, beavers, small reptiles, deer, an alligator, owls, a skunk, a fox, bears, turkeys, and a bald eagle. Some lovely relatively new murals now too. The nearby Birchmore Trail and Memorial Park with playground, small lake, and dog park are worth checking out.
Christine B — Google review
It's a little bit more rundown than it was when we visited in 2019. They are in the middle of some renovations that look very nice. The new fences look much better than the old ones. I don't know why some of the gates were locked. It was a little troubling. The biggest detractor right now is the condition of the animal sanctuaries. Kind of reminds me how yellow River game ranch was in their decline. Have to keep in mind that this is a free to the public zoo. If you go to their website there are options to help to support them if we don't want to see something like this disappear.

Sanford Stadium

Mentioned on
2 lists
Stadium
Sights & Landmarks
Sanford Stadium, the 92,000-seat football stadium located at the University of Georgia and home to their Bulldogs team, is a popular venue for sports enthusiasts. The stadium is well-maintained with clean facilities and restrooms that have attendants on hand. Visitors are advised to rent a stadium chair as the bleacher seating can be cramped during peak attendance times. Only card payments are accepted for purchases made throughout the premises. Exiting from the top parking deck may cause delays due to heavy traffic.
GO DAWGS!!! I love this place! I love the bugle at the beginning and the red coat band at halftime! The excitement of the music and the fireworks and the lights and the team running out on the field! Everybody should be between the hedges at least once in their lifetime.love the new seat back design, too. The mesh was way cooler than the previous vinyl coverings.
Ramona C — Google review
What can I say, gotta love Sanford Stadium!! This is one of those venues where people seem just genuinely happy to be there. Concessions are ok. Parking is a pain, but probably no worse than any other college football stadium. The reason I couldn’t give 5 stars….the aftermath. Getting out of there is atrocious. And it’s not clearly marked where to catch the shuttles either. Other than that, solid experience. GO DAWGS!!!
Stacie B — Google review
Came as a fan of the opposing team. Fans were all nice. Of course you have some students that are obnoxious. But overall great interactions with the home fans. Concession prices are very reasonable and there were hydration stations for water fill-ups. I really appreciated being able to affordably eat inside the stadium. We couldn’t really watch anything on the (1) video board and there was distortion in the audio system. We had 600 level seats. The fireworks and light up wristbands were cool, though. Post game traffic and exiting was horrible. This town and area is not meant to host 100,000+ people. We had a parking pass for the Hull Street deck. I arrived to my car at approximately 11:39pm, pulled out and got in line to leave. We then proceeded to sit in our car for an hour and a half and finally was able to exit the parking lot well after 1am. Unacceptable. Very cool venue. I enjoyed the SEC Road environment despite a subpar technology and parking experience.
Tolliver G — Google review
Beautiful campus and great experience at the game. The concession prices were comparable to a local high school football game. Every seat in the stadium seemed to have a good view of the game!

Being proud alumni we were both excited to take our daughter for a campus tour - regardless of if she selects UGA for her first four years. It was very informative and the students giving the tours were great about spending time with each prospective student and answering general questions that everyone has. It is always nice to see Sanford Stadium and this tour brought back a lot of good memories.

Durhamtown Off Road Resort

Resort hotel
Nature & Parks
Basic cabins & RVs at a lively off-roading venue with tracks & trails for all riders & a restaurant.
I found Durhamtown from an on line search through Google. My grandchildren are into 4-wheelers. So I suggested it to the family and they were all in. From the moment we hit your property we encountered the sweetest employees. They were professional, friendly and very kind. We had never been to any 4 wheel track the such as Durhamtown. The trails are well managed, challenging or mild depending on your skill set. My SxS was right off the show room floor and your trails gave me a lot of challenge. I may have scared my 35 year old son a time or two. Who knew at 63 I would be all gas and no brakes. I am addicted and I will be telling all my friends about our fantastic experience here. And we will be returning soon and often!! Thank you Durhamtown staff for sure a great experience!!

I recently stayed at this campground and had a great experience overall. The campground itself was clean, peaceful, and well-organized, making it a comfortable place to relax. One of the highlights was definitely the trail system. The trails were well-maintained and easy to navigate, with a variety of terrain that kept things interesting. I’d definitely recommend this campground to anyone looking for a mix of relaxation and outdoor adventure. Whether you're camping solo, with friends, or bringing the family, it’s a great place to enjoy nature and off roading!
Francisco A — Google review
This place is amazing with over 100 miles of trails. Our whole family just loves going there. We ride side-by-sides, four-wheelers, and several family members ride dirt bikes. Everybody has a great time. Oh, and we have some members who ride dirt/ mountain e-bikes and they have wonderful time as well.
Robert C — Google review
The off-road riding trails are amazing. The rentals are excellent and well priced. The staff are all great. The whole place is very accommodating and friendly. My only gripe with the cabin rental. We got a 10 person sleeper but it only had a 2 seater couch, 1 rocking chair and a wood picnic bench. There wasn’t anywhere to sit for the majority of our group.
Elusive D — Google review
Durhamtown blows me away each time my family and I go! We never fail to have a fun time! Previously we have brought our RV but this particular time we decided to rent one of the cabins. It was very minimal and at the same time met all of our needs! Although we didn’t spend much time at the cabin the time we did was very welcoming and perfect for our crew. Firewood is sold at the Lodge and that was very helpful as well as the dining hall! Checking into our cabin was quick and easy even though we arrived after 8pm!
Ella H — Google review
When is the back half of the Bomber track going to be reopened? Worst decision ever made at this facility was to cut off half of the best track there because of laziness. Once reopened I will change my review to all 5 stars. Been coming to this place for over 15 years but rarely come now that the main track has regressed.
Adamb1077 — Google review
Unbelievable facility with incredible tracks and good trails. Cabins with ice cold air-conditioning in boiling hot showers rent for 100 bucks a night and can sleep five people. If you were thinking about coming here, there is nothing left to think about. Load up your vehicle and head to Durham town immediately.

Went to Races to watch Grandkids participate. Facility was incredible. Associates were very friendly with exception of kitchen service. Made lots of new friends at track. State Parks
Riverside campground featuring a 229-ft. wooden covered bridge, the longest in Georgia.
Watson Mill Bridge State Park is a hidden gem with well-maintained trails that range from easy to moderate—perfect for a relaxed hike. The covered bridge is stunning and makes for great photos. There are shaded picnic areas with grills, which made it ideal for our family outing. Highly recommend for a scenic day trip or quiet outdoor escape. Be sure to bring all necessities (water, food, and other essentials) as the on-site store has limited supplies and there are no nearby stores.

there is no sewer hook up but everything else about this Park is absolutely fantastic. It's dark. It's quiet you're surrounded by trees that people are very kind. The covered bridge is a very interesting focal point for the park.

What a great all around park. Of course you go for the covered bridge and falls which are fantastic but it is one of the cleanest parks we have been to. The trails, parking areas and rest rooms were spotless.

Gorgeous serene park. Very quiet setting. Our campground hosts were amazing. Very knowledgeable of the area. Reservations can be made online. 21 premium sites as well as 3 pioneer sites. They also have equestrian sites you can stay at.

Beautiful river spot to play on the rocks. Do beware of snakes we saw 2 venomous ones on our trip but just walked around them. Our dog and kids enjoyed the cool river water.
Rebecca K — Google review
Watson Mill Bridge State Park is a gem on a hot summer day. The dam overflow and shallow pools make for a great place to get soaked or just cool your feet. There are plenty of shade trees and picnic tables to eat lunch at. There are also a few short trails along the river for a scenic walk.
JRodCC — Google review
This is a picturesque park. Not super busy on a summer Saturday. We were disappointed that we couldn't slide down the rocks due to very low water level. The pictures of people doing this looked so fun! There was a deeper swimming hole if you walk down the creek a bit.
Steven P — Google review
Gorgeous spot to spend an afternoon, and the drive through the surrounding areas is lovely as well! Plenty of picnic tables and some pavilion space. Many wide flat, rocky areas on the river to set up for a few hours of leisure, picnicking, splashing in the shallows, etc. Abundant endemic flora and fauna to spot— we saw tadpoles, butterflies, bees, buttonbush, tiny juvenile frogs, and even a friendly banded water snake. We’ll be back!

Absolutely beautiful place. So much history to explore and enjoy. So much to learn. Mule day every year is definitely a cool event worth going too

I had great afternoon visiting Callaway Plantation. There is a lot to see both within the main house and the grounds. I had a wonderful time talking with Rhonda in the General Store. She was very knowledgeable about local history, the house architecture, and the history of the plantation. I certainly plan on returning when I have more time to spend there. Perhaps during the Mule Day Festival!

Great little campground. Awesome host. Was not able to take a guided tour because of timing. Nice pull through level site. Full hookups.
Chuck A — Google review
This was an awesome day trip. The plantation is beautifully reserved and Suzanne, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable in answering all of our questions. You can tell that a lot of love has been put into restoring these homes to their original era in time. The brick house was definitely a grand mansion in its day. I loved hearing all of the stories that Suzanne shared with us. She is truly a gem. Looking forward to going back in October for Mule Day!! When you're finished touring the plantation, be sure to go to The Pig & Bull Grill and get the Killa!! Tell Eric & DJ that I sent you lol Both of these places were an amazing find and looking forward to going back soon!! I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!!

I think this is part of my geneology line! Mom's maiden name is Callaway. The plantation was more than I expected. So many outbuildings/support structures and in a beautiful, beautiful setting. Unfortunately we went on a day they are not open, so no interior tours. We were able to peek through the windows to get a glimpse of the rooms. Family cemetery on site too. On site camping available too. Amazingly enough it suits across from a small county airport, but it doesn't take away from the charm of the remaining Callaway plantation acreage. Thank you so much for deeding this property to the city to keep it maintained.
Rhonda — Google review
What a great jewel! Fabulous restored plantation house. It was great that they allow you full access to the rooms. The tickets are purchased at the gift shop. We did not have a guided tour. It would be nice to have an audio tour or something.
Cheryl P — Google review
Went to Mule Day - Southern Heritage Festival. Had a blast. Also took in the history of the plantation. Walked the grounds and toured the house. It was very interesting and had so much original furniture and decor still in there. I definitely will be reading more on it tonight to be able to appreciate what we saw.

Unfortunately the times were not updated on the website and we drove an hour on Wednesday to find a closed site. The two persons working there said it would be ok to walk around. There is a variety of buildings and a beautiful herb garden around the main plantation house. You can view the great wood joinery on the log home. Nice placards describing the buildings. Facility hosts many activities throughout the year. Parking seems to be abundant... especially when it’s closed.

The Harlem Museum and Welcome Center, Home of the Laurel & Hardy Museum in Augusta, Georgia is a small but fascinating museum dedicated to the comedic duo Laurel and Hardy. The museum features a diverse collection of memorabilia, although not all items are on display at once. Visitors can learn about the history of Harlem and Oliver Hardy while exploring this charming little town. The friendly staff are knowledgeable and eager to share insights about the theater and local history.
The lady docent with the pleasent" German " accent was very informative and a pleasure to talk to, the museum, though small, had many interesting items and much info on Laural and Hardy and the history of the city of Harlem, Georgia

Very nice building and historic building. It had both memorabilia and history of city oh Harlem and Laurel and Hardy. The movie was informative in the theater. Souvenirs could be purchased. It was off the beaten path, but well worth the stop. It's free to get in and they ask for a donation.

What an informative and in depth tribute to Laurel & Hardy as well as the town of Harlem. It was worth the extra 15 mins drive, especially because they screen the films throughout the day. I loved the plethora of memorabilia and learning more about them as well as important others from the town. The Events & Museum administrator, Sina, was a delight to speak with. If I hadn't needed to get back on the road, I would have stayed another hour to watch the entire film & continue the conversation.
Shari W — Google review
A fun stop!! What a delightful place preserving the memory of these two important funny men!! The lady working up front was so nice. My mother and I had a wonderful time looking at the collection of memorabilia. There is a theatre in the back playing the old shows. If you take the time to look in the cases there is really quite a lot of interesting things to see.
Chris K — Google review
It was finely presented but it mostly looked like a collection of memorabilia rather than artifacts you would expect in a museum. Artifacts like scripts with the boys notes, contracts, actual costumes from this or that, actual items and artifacts that seem to come from the actual Stan Laurel Oliver Hardy or their respected estates' private collection. The museum had items collectors could have purchased at any point. They had a poster displayed that I currently have in my home.
Matt N — Google review
Cozy museum that is well worth the visit. The Laurel and Hardy Museum shares it's home with a celebration of Harlem, Georgia's local history. You'll find your standard old photos and newspaper clippings (which is nice), but there are a few head-turning items of weirdness that'll grab your attention as well.

Mistletoe State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Parks
Recreation spot set on a lake with bass fishing, sand beach, nature trails & camping areas.
It was our first venture to a GA. State Park and Mistletoe was a great start. The weather was great along with the water it was a little chilly but refreshing. If the rest of the parks in GA are as nice as Mistletoe we can't wait to visit a lot more.
David H — Google review
Beautiful views and we loved having a waterfront site. The floors of the bathrooms were absolutely filthy and appeared to not have been cleaned for a very long time. The overall cleanliness of the bathrooms left a lot to be desired. I have tent camped all my life in GA state parks and these have to be some of the nastiest bath house floors I have encountered. There was a mound of soiled washcloths in one of the stalls that weren't cleaned during our 3 night stay. A good hose off with some bleach would work wonders in the bathrooms. Overall, we had a great time and the 24 hour kayak rentals were awesome. Our site had a small "beach" area where the kids could play which was so convenient and they had a great time. We also went to the main beach area which was nice and had very clean bathrooms.
Kristen M — Google review
Overall, it was a good hike. Due to Hurricane Helenea and lack of resources & help to clean up, it was to be expected. I am an advocate for green jobs, and if you love the outdoors, it's still worth the hike and anything dealing with water activities.

Clean and well kept park north of Atlanta. Boat ramp with plenty of parking and a swimming area nearby. Even has an archery area. A parking fee is required but I have the year pass for every park in the state so you just hang it on your mirror. Good experience, would go back.
Travel_with_tripp — Google review
One of our favorite camping spots. Sites are clean and relatively level. All sites have a picnic table and fire ring. Plenty of places to pull your boat up and all campers are great about sharing the beach areas. Great fishing and swimming, some hiking trails are still closed due to damage from hurricane Helene. Park programs are interesting and fun, kids love the playground. Great experience!

Hickory Knob State Park And Resort

Resort & state park offering lodge-style accommodations, an 18-hole golf course, campsites & trails.
We had a great weekend! We rented one of the rooms and it was clean and comfortable. Having dock access for our boat was convenient and allowed us time to enjoy all that Hickory Knob had to offer! We really enjoyed the breakfast buffet!!! Pricing was fair and there was a variety for all of us to enjoy. We'll be back for sure!

This is the second stay on an MLK weekend. The resort area seems very nice, the golf course seems nice, the hiking trails are good, but there is a huge missed opportunity on the campground. Sites are very unlevel and designed as "slight incline". The step of our camper was ridiculously high off of the ground. Most sites have no gravel and are nothing but sticky red mud when it rains. Apparently the campground was developed way back when to target tent campers and has not evolved from that. There are some better sites but not along the water. Most sites have great views of the water. The bathhouse has always been clean and nice to use. Many families, like ours, travel with pets which eliminates the resort as an option. Would love to see some improvements to the campground so that more people have their RV as an option here.

Park is beautiful. Lake is big and lots of fishing. Hiking and biking trails were fine. Golf course (not played) looked pretty nice. Everyone was nice. Rooms are in need of a refresh. It’s a park hotel so expectations weren’t high. Shower controls didn’t work and hot water was off or full blast and very hot. Room was otherwise fine.

Nice state park resort glad I stayed in lodge so I was able to be close the restaurant and pool if I would have brought my camper I probably wouldn't have made it to this side of the park.

Can't, for the life of me, figure out why this place wasn't more busy. Beautiful place. Unbeatable price on camping and rentals. Friendly staff. Clean facilities. Couldn't ask for me. My family is excited to go back!

This was our first visit, but definitely not the last. We absolutely loved our campsite with access to the lake. Some of the site are difficult to access for bigger rigs.... luckily we didn't have an issue. Bathhouse was clean, and things were surprisingly quiet for new years eve. We treated ourselves to the New Year's buffet at the park restaurant & it was good. Overall great experience!

The Augusta Canal Discovery Center is a captivating destination that offers an immersive experience into the history and evolution of the only industrial canal in the American South. Housed in a historic textile mill, the center features interactive exhibits and artifacts that showcase the trade and transportation along the canal over time. Visitors can explore the significance of the Augusta Canal, which played a pivotal role in the city's development and industrial growth since its completion in 1845.
We thoroughly enjoyed the 2nd annual Canal Discovery day on April 15th 2023. The Canal Discovery Center has a detailed walkable museum that is interactive for all ages. They also offer boat rides with a guide that tells the history of the canal, its workers, the history of the buildings along the canal and the story of the people who hand dug the canal. Id highly recommend a visit to this wonderful local museum for the whole family.

We love this hidden gem of Augusta charm! Tucked into The Enterprise Mill, this hands on collection of CSRA history is both educational and fun! Lots of souvenirs too!

Museum, theater, and boat tour for a very reasonable price. Fascinating history. Loved it. Great for children and adults.
Mike P — Google review
Nice boat tour on a cool (for August in Augusta) day. No crowds and nice low key but informative museum. Not quite as cool as the Dime museum but that's a bit of a different animal. 😄
Kevin H — Google review
The Discovery Center was really neat and informative. We took the morning canal boat tour, was fun.
David W — Google review
On Saturday 5/21/22, we arrived at the Canal Discovery Center at around 9:45am for their 10am canal boat tour. We were a little dismayed that the tour boat might be at capacity. We hung around to wait and see about a large group that was running a little late. The Discovery Center staff was great and they worked it out that we were able to go on the tour also. The boat guide and captain were great. We really enjoyed the hour long canal tour. We had no idea that the canal was so vital to Augusta's history. It was very informative. We also enjoyed the museum where we learned so much more about the area history. If you're in the area and looking for something to do, I highly recommend this.

We had so much fun! The museum was hands-on enough to entertain our three-year-old, and the employees were so kind to him as well. And while he was entertained, I enjoyed learning a ton about the canal, which I didn't even know existed prior to visiting. Highly recommend.

Museums
The Augusta Museum of History is a treasure trove of Augusta's rich heritage and culture, spanning over 12,000 years. It showcases rare books, photographs, and exhibits that delve into the city's military history and honor local legends like James Brown and Aquilla James Dyess. The museum also highlights the region's connection with golf.
Just learning about the history of Augusta and surrounding area would be plenty, but you also get a great history of the sport of golf, and a tribute to the "hardest working man in show business", James Brown!!! There is so much on display, and how it is laid out brings surprises at each corner. Some of the displays are interactive. My photos try to capture the most significant things, but certainly not all. There is also a self-guided audio tour that can be accessed using your smartphone.
StevePotts — Google review
I really enjoyed this museum. Great history of Augusta, a cool James Brown exhibit, and a wonderful room showcasing the history of golf. I would definitely recommend stopping by for a couple of hours if you are in town.
Paul V — Google review
Was a very nice experience especially if you like museums about local history and culture, some of my wife’s family live in Augusta and we visit occasionally. They have plenty of interactive and interesting things to do, they also have an audio tour that you just use a QR code with your phone, was very clean and so where the restrooms. They also has some nice souvenirs.
Cory Y — Google review
This place was really nice for $5 a person. Like definitely underpriced for how much you get out of the museum. But this place is so nice and has so much to look at. I loved the little artifacts about James Brown, I had no clue he was from Augusta Georgia. Yeah anyways definitely stop by this place
Mux.llary A — Google review
Massive curation of Augusta history, golf, and James Brown! Theres a full size train and trolley car! Don’t skip the free audio tour, and bring your own Penny for the press machine!
Amanda J — Google review
All I know of Augusta is that it's the home of the Masters, it's on the Savannah River, it's downtown has seen better days, and that is perfectly half way between Beaufort SC and Atlanta GA. Now that I've visited the Augusta Museum of History I know a lot more about the town and the people it has produced, primarily it's native son James Brown. But there's a lot more to the region, from Native American settlers to riverboats to trains. I'm fact there's a full size engine right in the museum. If your looking for a good overview of the town and the region the Augusta Mission of History is the perfect place to get it in a couple of hours. After the museum, walk the Riverwalk and then through the town to see all the places you just learned about and experience the resilience of the townspeople as the celebrate their heritage.
Jason L — Google review
I thought this was a fantastic museum, with well thought out exhibits covering everything Augusta from the first settlers (15,000 years ago) to more current luminaries.

Augusta Riverwalk Marina is a must-visit spot in Augusta. It's conveniently located near the Riverwalk walkway and offers activities like kayaking and enjoying the soothing river views. The upcoming pedestrian bridge across the Savannah River will provide even more opportunities for exploration, including food vendors. Visitors praise the friendly staff, peaceful atmosphere, and variety of offerings at the marina.
Several miles of river walk with ample seating and picnic options. The playground unfortunately has trees down in it.

I have been coming here since I was a kid and when I had kids I took them as well so excited to have a grand baby on the way and then I can take her. I even spreader my husband's ashes here years ago. So many great memories.

DEFINITELY add the marina to your itinerary when you visit Augusta. The riverwalk is great, you can rent kayaks, and the river is so soothing to just sit and watch. They also have a pedestrian bridge opening soon that you can walk across the Savannah River on and enjoy food vendors, etc. I’ll definitely visit it when it opens to the public.

Golf Courses
Played course on June 9th, 2024. This is BY FAR one of the best layouts I have ever played. I have played almost 100 golf courses and I will forever remember it. The name "Mount Vintage" does not do it justice. Great practice facilities, greens are smooth and roll fast and consistent. The views are magnificent. Fairways, bunkers, and tee boxes are in great shape. There are some hard spots but if you do your job you won't have to worry about that. This course makes you think about club selection and every hole has elevation going either up or down. I really wish I lived closer to this course cause I would be here regularly. They treated us well during our veterans tournament. Highly recommend!
Ovell I — Google review
This is a beautiful golf course in great condition. It is challenging and demands strong approach shots. The greens are exceptionally undulating and they tuck the pin into some tight places. It is typically better to be short of the flag. The scenery is almost breathtaking in places with several ponds and stone bridges. Numerous tee shots are either obstructed by water or play a mental role as they lurk right and left. It's a strong design with three sets of nine holes. All of them very much a great time.

The Best Course I’ve Played in South Carolina and Georgia, bar none! Mount Vintage Golf Club is simply outstanding , the best course I’ve played across South Carolina and Georgia. Every hole has character, and you can tell that every detail was thoughtfully designed for a truly enjoyable round. The fairways and greens are immaculately maintained, the layout offers a perfect mix of challenge and beauty, and the scenic bridges add a touch of elegance to the experience. From start to finish, the course feels intentional , from the tee boxes to the approach views, to how each hole flows into the next. It’s clear that Mount Vintage was built for golfers who appreciate both strategy and scenery. Whether you’re a local or traveling in for a great round, this is a must-play course.

Fantastic golf course with 27 holes, so you may not know where you start and finish when playing 18. The course was very scenic and challenging.
David R — Google review
This was my 1st visit here, but it definitely won't be my last! From the super friendly staff to the bullet-like electric carts, I had a great time here. Even struck up a quick conversation with the new supt. and congratulated him on how well kept the course is. The greens are quick but fair, and the layout makes you think about your shots as you play. Greens fees are comparable for North Augusta, I'm sure, but it wasn't as pricey as playing at the beach! Already looking forward to my next visit!
Lee C — Google review
Epic for this area, price is great and picturesque views!!! I’d play here every weekend if I could.
Jonathan R — Google review
This is a golf experience from start to finish, the Pro Shop attendant, Jessica, was first class and very helpful as we arrived. The carts are fast, the practice facility was first class. The course is in great condition and has some of the best architectural nuances of any course I've played. The starter was very helpful and the afternoon price is a steal if you can stand the heat. Definitely will play it again. Highly recommend.

Hitchcock Woods, located in Aiken, is a sprawling urban forest covering 2,100 acres and offering over 70 miles of sandy trails for hikers, walkers, bird-watchers, and equestrians to explore. Visitors can grab a map at the kiosks to learn about the diverse plant and animal species found within the woods. This sanctuary provides a serene escape for nature enthusiasts and outdoor lovers seeking to immerse themselves in Aiken's natural landscape.
What an amazing place to spend the day. Parking was great. Extremely quiet. Walked the very well maintained paths while my daughter rode horses with friends. Extremely relaxing and a feast for the eyes. A must for anyone in Aiken.

Such a variety of trails. Pet friendly, well kept, and clean. Being from out of town, had a little trouble finding an entrance. Thought there would be a large entrance with a parking lot. If there was we couldn't find it.
Tiffany M — Google review
A fantastic swath of nature. First time visitor to the city and the woods. Dog friendly as long as he/she is on a leash. Well maintained trails, although it is easy to get lost. Would recommend using an app with trail maps if you’re actively trying to find some of the “points of interest.” Seems like for some of the points of interest, you do need to go off trail which I wish there was a little more detail about on the website and/or maps. We had a beautiful little picnic in a little grove of trees and it was so peaceful and secluded. Saw several horse riders during our few hours on the trail, all very friendly. I do not that I would not recommend trying to run on these trails as they are made of sand (unless you want sand training.) There were also *many* portions with lots of poison ivy along the trail edge, so be warned. If you’re going off trail, definitely wear long pants. We had a wonderful experience and will definitely be returning when in town again.

70 miles of trails, endless routes you can take, many cool things along the way. The coolest thing to see here is the Chalk Cliffs along the Tea Cottage Loop Trail. This is an excellent place to visit in Aiken. Detailed maps are provided. Lots if horse poop on the trails, be careful

Great urban woodland, for hiking, horseback riding, and family outings. Enough space to get lost. Watch out for quicksand. Legit it's in there. Rumored to house a werewolf named Russell. 🤔 so maybe pack some silver bullets with your water bottles and snack.
Rachel G — Google review
A peaceful place for hiking. The trails I've walked seem like they were created for horses, but they are certainly passable for foot traffic. Bring good hiking shoes. Some trails have very soft sand in places. Keep flip flops at home. Gouges where trees and brush were cleared from the trails after an ice storm several years ago are still visible and take away from the natural beauty of the woods.

Hopelands Gardens is a 14-acre estate in Aiken, known for its picturesque beauty and rich history. Once the private gardens of Mrs. C. Oliver Iselin, this tranquil public garden features old oak trees, cedars, a koi pond, fountains, and enchanting holiday lights. The estate offers children's story time and hosts free concerts on its performance stage.
A few years ago my lovely wife took me to Hopelands Gardens. This was my first visit there, and it was a very nice, relaxing walk around the grounds! Very enjoyable. We didn't get to explore everywhere due to my mobility issues, but I felt like we did cover a lot of the grounds. I didn't have my camera, and I wish I did, but cell phone cameras are really pretty high quality these days. I look forward to another visit, probably next Spring!

Several times a year we visit the serenity here. Spring is our favorite. Everyone enjoys the music and lights at Christmas, everyone loves the colors of Fall, but the magic of Spring and all of the turtles, the flowers, the Koi pond and the crisp newness of the promise of our new year, this is my absolute favorite. You can walk the paths, sit on the benches, bird watch fish watch or swing on the swings up on the hill or walk your dog or have a small picnic. The most relaxing place in aiken sc !

We really enjoyed this cool museum of railroad history in the eyes of Aiken, SC. Learned a lot about how the railroad serviced Aiken and the CSRA. Not a big museum, but doesn't need to be. We recommend the Trolley Tour if you get tickets. Very informative from a local historian.

John J — Google review
We were visiting Aiken to find the home my wife grew up in as a child, and decided to stop off at the visitor center to get a feel for the place. Absolutely the right choice. John and Nancy were so hospitable and knew everything about the town. The visitor center itself is an exact replica of the original train station in Aiken. Built from the plans that were discovered in the original building. I’m a train nut so the fact that the visitor center doubles as a train museum really got my interest. The second floor has phenomenal diorama’s, showing the various towns along the southern railroad at the height of it life. Really well maintained and exceptionally well done. I plan on coming back for train days. Midsomer, when train rides are available in the town celebrates the importance of the rail line that came through here. Lots of history in this town, and definitely worth stopping off at the visitor center to get a feel for what’s available from shopping to museums to nature walks.

The docent was very nice, once she finally came over to help. Took me calling the phone to get her to come over after she saw me standing there for several minutes. Beautiful building, and great resources. I wish they had a map and listing of the trees in the Arboretum.

Loved visiting the Aiken Visitor Center & Train Museum, and had a good time talking with the workers there. Although, I almost derailed their train! 🚆😮 (they were very forgiving, though surprised it was an adult causing problems 😳😝) Turns out the motor can provide too high of power for the train to handle all the curves, so they have a little tape piece to mark how far it can go (I didn't notice at first). It's actually quite fun to make it drive around if you watch out for the speed and track line. They have a little gift shop as well, plus a balcony upstairs with miniature models of trains and such, with lots of information on trains in Aiken. Be sure to sign the guest book y'all! ✍️

Forested riverfront park offering multiuse trails, fishing, kayaking, boat rentals & wildlife views.
Kayak and canoe rentals. Launch point in park near campsites. Low traffic generally, very peaceful place. Pond, river marsh access. Wildlife thriving with birds everywhere. Well forested , tons of shade. Most important draw is the quite. Well located close enough to amenities, but far away enough for a peaceful retreat. Walking trails also crisscrossed the area, mostly flat and manageable terrain. Fishing ponds and small park for children as well. Highly recommend

We were in space #22 it was a pretty good spot as far as privacy the bathhouse was right across the way it was extremely hot in there when you took a shower you would still be sweating when you finished. The facilities are older but taken care of. The staff was very nice. The park has swimming and very nice picnic areas.

Aiken State Park is fun for a day visit or overnight camping. Bring a kayak/canoe or rent one to take the kayak trail down the Edisto River. The cypress trees are beautiful. Enjoy fresh water from an artisan spring near the kayak launch. Hike a trail or two and then cool off in the small swimming area. No beach but some trees provide shade on the shore. I would recommend water shoes. There is a nice large porch near the park office with lounging chairs and checkers.
Tracy B — Google review
Another enjoyable CCC park. The loop drive is one way and returns you back outside the admissions both. The park office building was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It has bathrooms, a sitting area the looks over the main pond and play area, and a picnic table. 2 ponds for swimming Memorial Day-Labor Day. Playground has a climbing frame, a single slide and a couple swings. The jungle nature trail was an enjoyable hike but the boardwalk trail is closed. Only the north side of the trail is barred off. The South side, coming from the rest of the park, does not reflect as closed except part of the boardwalk is removed. No signs are posted noting this. The artesian well near the kayak ramp is still cold, clean and refreshing. The Fish Lake Shelter is a cool CCC structure in which we found a nest of baby birds. The campground looks nice and clean. All in all an enjoyable couple hours.

This is a great spot to camp, we've done so twice now in @Ramona_the_airstream . Campground is near, nestled in the pines. Bathrooms are decent, clean, and good hot showers. I love the natural spring there! I fill my water bottle on the way out every time. Delish. Also, we rented kayaks to float the river which is also a really neat experience. There's an easy walking trail from the campground, but that's it. More hiking opportunities would be neat.
Tom C — Google review
This is a great park! We were here for a wedding and everywhere we went was so nice. Grass/walking areas were all well kept, the covered picnic shelters were clean and in good shape, and even the bathrooms clean and stocked. The one-way nature of the park road is a little weird but it is a nice way to ensure you get to see some of the whole park.

Not what I was expecting. Its clean and well maintained. The campground is in a pine thicket and not very secluded, just hot. The "lakes" could be nice but they need some TLC. I won't go back.

Seasonal, weekend-only drive-in theater with double features, snack-bar food & a kids' play area.
The Big Mo is the best. It's a 50 min drive from where I live but worth it. Best deal in watching movies. There really is nothing like sitting outside under the stars and watching movies, it's $10 bucks for a double feature. The concession stand is the best, the food is delicious, although, get in line early everybody wants some too you don't want to miss any of your movie. Don't sleep on this awesome place I've been going here since I got my driver's license in 2004. It's great if you have kids, go early they have a playground. The staff is always friendly.

A step back in time! Great atmosphere for kids and adults. We saw the new LILO and Stitch movie on Memorial Day weekend. Great picture quality. No issues with finding a parking spot. Everyone was respectful with headlights and noise from their cars. Friendly staff. And great prices. Also, in case your radio doesn’t work, they have radios to rent for $5! Use cash if you’re gonna go
Daniel K — Google review
Short Version: They refused to ban an insanely drunk man who was driving around during a movie after not noticing he ran over his cooler and chair. Long Version: New to the area and love Drive-ins. Took my oldest daughter to one movie and my cousin took my youngest to another movie Saturday night. During our second movie, we noticed a man stumbling drunk. Barely able to make it to the bathroom and back. He then hopped in the driver seat I said something to a worker (who I later found out was the owner's son) and he went that direction to investigate (I think) and while walking up to the truck the man started his truck and proceeded to leave. He slowly ran over his full sized cooler/radio, and chair. He then started his way out through the parking spots. The worker shined his pen light at him and let out the most mild "hey stop". Knowing how drunk this man was, I ran down the aisle and placed myself in the headlights to get his attention. He stopped and I got him to shut off his truck and give me his keys. Employees called the police and while the police were on their way, they let him use their cell phone to call for a ride home. The sheriffs showed up and the employee downplayed the entire situation and I had to interject to let the deputy know how insanely drunk the man was, and that he was throwing evidence in the bushes while they were on their way. Being on private property the deputies didn't have a lot of options and as his wife was already on her way, they decided to let her take him and get home safe. When asked if they wanted him trespassed, the employee and the owner were very unsure and said no. Why did they say no? Because the man was a regular and has been going there for many years. So, being as the owner/management is more concerned with losing a long time customer who was driving drunk and running over things, than with customers and the children walking around and sitting out in the grass. I will never set foot there again, and neither will my children. Not to mention, after telling the owner's son this, his response of "Eh, alright" while shrugging, really sealed that deal.

Felt like we were stepping back in time when we went to the drive-in! We stayed in our car due to the off/on rain (and used our car radio), but brought our emergency radio as backup. The $10/person admission is great- for a double feature that means only $5 per movie! We brought our own drinks but purchased popcorn (delicious) and I got a hot dog. The grill line (hot dogs, burgers, etc.) is a bit of a longer wait but it wasn’t bad at all. Cash only, and bring bug spray. The bathroom situation isn’t ideal- more like a bathroom you would find at a campground- but it was fine. Can’t wait to go back!
Tori L — Google review
My daughter and I had a great time. Concessions was affordable and everything was fresh and made to order. The main screen area filled up quickly, so I agree that if you're trying to watch something on the main screen get there early. We were on the 2nd screen and would have been fine showing up closer to the movie start time.

Very fun and inexpensive movie option. Good for the whole family or just a couples date. The concessions are great or you can bring your own snacks. I think it's open for weekends only

The Big Mo is always a good experience! I usually bring my own snacks, but this time I bought some concessions and everything was good. Make sure to bring something to keep the bugs away, and I recommend renting a radio from them or bringing one so you don't have to use your car radio.

It's such a spiritual journey. We met people from all around, and they all brought containers to bring water back home. Everyone was so nice,if we could just be like this everywhere we go. We traveled just over an hour. One person was from NC and comes back once a month.

Beautiful. Serene. Refreshing, peaceful...perfect! It does stay busy with people coming to get water. However, everyone was respectful, quiet, and respectful! Can't wait to go again. It was worth the 2 hr drive.

This is a lovely space - peaceful and calming, even with people coming and going to fill up their bottles. And the people? Genuinely kind. Everyone was helpful, patient, and respectful of one another’s time at the spring. Folks travel from all over to collect this water. It’s incredibly refreshing, and some say it truly has healing properties. I waded in the stream, and let me tell you - I haven’t walked barefoot outdoors since I was a little girl, but those pebbles were no joke! Still, the water felt amazing on a balmy July afternoon. Worth every step.

Very peaceful, open area, plenty of space to park. Can easily access and containers fill quickly. People friendly when encountered. Gratitude upon arrival and leaving.

The spring has to be experienced in person. The video and pics don't this place any good. If you're ever in Carolina this is a MUST VISIT! The water alone is worth the visit. Take a few gallon jugs. You won't be satisfied with only 1.

I did not know about this place until last week. I love the idea that the Springs were dedicated to God. We met some nice folks that had some some wonderful testimonies. We took home 5 gallons of the healing springs water. Hope to come back soon.

Positive Vibes! I enjoy the calm, peacefulness while filling my containers. Anyone I meet there is friendly and have a story about this water.

I love coming here, it's so serene. Every time I've visited, FATHER met me there! The water is so cool and refreshing.

Newberry Opera House

Performing arts theater
Concerts & Shows
This renovated 400-seat French Gothic–inspired facility presents a variety of live concerts & shows.
The facility recently underwent a full restoration. It turned out wonderfully. Very beautiful decor and not a bad seat in the house. They bring a wide range of high quality performances, including Chubby Checker and A Christmas With CS Lewis.

Beautiful building outside. Did get to see the lobby only. Did try seeing the stage and seating area but the young lady that we asked said that the troupe that came in did not want us to come in since they had just arrived and were about to set up and didn’t want to be disturbed. We drove a long distance to see this historic place and considered a show after we saw the lineup. But…! The young lady was nice to us and tried for us, and we thank you. We signed the register and decided to move onto our next city (Greenville). We’ll come back another time maybe.

Adorable place, small and quaint. I sat in orchestra on the side which was a good thing, cause if I sat on the floor being short at only 4'11" with big ladies standing up and dancing, i wouldn't see a thing!! Also they say no pictures or videos. They dont endorse that at all. Otherwise, it would have gotten a 5 star.

What a Great place to catch an intimate show/concert. I was told its been redone and its very nice. Not a bad seat in the house. Do note that the balcony seats on right side upper are single file. Meaning if you buy 2 together you will face the stage and also stare at the back of your partners head! (Single file seats facing fwd) They offer booze (beer&wine!) Bathrooms are clean nice and updated. Staff was excellent. Saw a Ben Folds show(Indie piano guy) and the mix was done great. Slight hum on right side speakers but that was easily ignored.

Great venue for concerts. Very interesting decor as a smallish version of the 'Grand Old Opry House' with plenty of comfy seating. A major plus is their excellent sound system. Staff is friendly and helpful. We'll visit again soon!

Newberry Opera House provides comfortable, small venue for classic groups and shows you won't find elsewhere. Feel up close and great seats throughout. Earth Wind and Fire Tribute band even came into spacious lobby post-show for greetings! Great time, always, at the lovely Opera House!

I had a wonderful time at the Newberry Opera House! The place was packed, and every seat was a great view. I got to see Black Violin in concert, and I would definitely return to this venue. The opera house is beautiful and easy to find.

Great Place to get access to the DAM walkway. There is a Lovelock Fence along the bridge. Pretty cool locks I might add.

Not 24 hour parkyI came at 9 in the evening gates are closed and signs for no trespassing. I dont know about the place just parking since it 24 hrs free parking for public
Aashish K — Google review
The parking is small and the park is fenced & closed, so we just walk to the dam - nice breeze.

It's nice to have a free place to park to walk the trail.

Great place to walk and see the miracles of man and mother nature...should be on everyone's tiny bucket list of things to do in Columbia.

Beautiful sunset, I had to pull over and watch it.
Gunny K — Google review
Great place to watch a sunset. Go for a run, take in the lake. It offers amazing views. I wish the park itself would stay open until sunset. You can access the parking lot 24/7 and you can walk or run the dam. The park itself closes before sunset. : (
Darin H — Google review
The sunset is consistently beautiful on the lake, and the dam is a great place to see it. Commuters that drive across the dam every evening are lucky. I highly recommend parking in this lot, going for walk/run on the path that runs along dam, and watching the amazing sunset.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Saluda Shoals Park is a 400-acre natural riverfront park in Columbia, offering a variety of outdoor activities for families and individuals. The park features an observation deck overlooking the river, boat launches, picnic shelters, and multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. It also includes the 11,000-square-foot Environmental Education Center and Exhibit Hall. For children of all abilities, there are inclusive playgrounds with sensory play areas and interactive musical installations.
Great park, well-maintained, friendly staff. There's lot to do. We biked the paved trails and kayaked from the upper landing to the lower. If you take your time and explore the creek that goes into the park, it's about an hour and a half of paddling. The playground is amazing - large and spread out with ample parking. The picnic shelters offer clean, covered spaces for get togethers. They're all close to the paved trails.

I only come here for the disc golf course. Last time I came 6 months ago there appeared to be course improvements happening, those have obviously been abandoned. The course appears to be abandoned and forever neglected. No tee pads, massively overgrown, majority of the course is unplayable, and the rest is miserable because of the overgrowth. You would think that they would keep up with it since it’s a pay to play course. 0/10 recommend. Do not play until they properly maintain and finish the course.

Great place to spend the day. They have parks, trails, tubing, splash pad, picnic areas, and more. Love it there.

Tubing down the river was very relaxing. Just make sure your there before 3:00 or they won't let you on the river.

Great space, paved paths for bikes, walkers and joggers. Many paths as well as some along the river.

Great park, for toddlers and all ages. We took our toddler there, and he loved it. It's a huge park with a section called Leo's Landing, which is the place that kids mostly love. It has numerous structures, rides slides. It also has a small zip-line for ages 5 to 10 years. It even has a small place to sit back and read a book, with a selection of shared books in an owl shaped shelf. It also has a splash pad that would open this weekend, we still went to see it. It's a great place for kids n parents to hang out.
