Mrs. Lee's Daffodil Garden

Temporarily Closed
Garden
Nature & Parks
We decided to drive out to see if Mrs. Lee's Daffodil Garden was open and so glad we did. It was a perfect day for driving slowly through the garden, with the windows down and the top open. The flowers were pretty, and even though most of the drive didn't have flowers, it was still a great day to be out. I will definitely go back again.
Lonnie S — Google review
Beautiful little drive to look at daffodils. The 4-mile road is dirt, extremely bumpy at times and it's a one lane road with, occasionally, oncoming cars. People tend to not follow directions and stop in the middle of the road, side of the road..Wherever so patience is truly a virtue here. There are three designated parking spots to stop and look at and walk around (not IN) the flowers. There's no charge as they run in donations therefore it's a great idea to bring some cash for your time .
Maggie S — Google review
Wonderful. So pretty. Lovely drive. Worth going to see when they're in full bloom.
Sherri P — Google review
Such a peaceful and beautiful place. Thank you for your hospitality and keeping the garden open. Such a beautiful place for family photos.
Jeffrey G — Google review
Friendly welcome. There was a fairly long line of cars on a Sunday afternoon, but most everyone was polite and stayed in their place while waiting. The views of lakes, wooded, rolling hills covered with blooming daffodils was worth the drive and the wait!
Harriet C — Google review
Beautiful location! I've lived in the area for years and just discovered this little slice of heaven. I can not wait to come back!

I'll be making a TikTok soon. (@hikerwifemom) I love this place! It's so beautiful! Been going here since I was a teenager. I'm 54 now.

Daffodils were pretty as ever! They have done a lot of road work inside the garden.

Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari

Wildlife and safari park
Nature & Parks
300-acre reserve with dozens of endangered & exotic species seen on self-guided drives.
This drive-thru safari was an incredible experience! Feeding the animals along the scenic paths was a highlight. The fallow and white-tail deer were gentle and eager, while the ostriches and camels brought excitement. The Highland cows and Zebras were a joy to see up close, and the sleek blackbucks added a touch of elegance to the adventure. The staff was friendly, the paths were well-maintained, and the overall setup made it easy to safely interact with the animals. Perfect for families and nature lovers—highly recommended!
Enrique Y — Google review
We absolutely loved it! There is a risk for them scratching your car but that is too be expected. They are wild animals. Overall, we love it and our son had a blast.
Brook E — Google review
This was so fun! We came here for the first time today, and everything was great. The staff was friendly, the little shop was cute, the toilets were clean - and most importantly, getting to see and interact with the animals was awesome. We are already looking forward to coming back and bringing some other family members with us.
Vivi-Anne J — Google review
Had a lot of fun feeding the animals. Some are super eager and will try to put their head in the vehicle. The camel took the entire bag. Lots of fun, lots of laughter. Was a great time with my fiance and her family. The zebras, camels, and cows will eat all the feed if you let them.
Texas T — Google review
I’ve been wanting to go to this place for quite some time after my family had mentioned it and I finally went there very impressed. Love the animals, especially since you get to feed them.
Clean A — Google review
Place is great. Just watch out for the camels. They are very smart and sneaky. Buy extra feed at gate it's worth it.
Paul C — Google review
This place is a lot of fun. The animals are very entertaining, however, these are semi wild creatures and they can cause damage to your vehicle and you release the Safari from any responsibility. The camel in particular can be aggressive. When we stopped feeding it and tried to drive away, it chased us. I had to stop because of tiny deer in front of me at which time the camel bit my tailgate and damaged my paint.
Jack D — Google review
Had a great experience here. Drove around in my car, saw many animals too. Spent 2 hours on the drive. Took many pictures of animals that had as much fun as I did. Bought the grandkids all stuffed animals that were very unique,

This museum uses full-scale dioramas to illustrate the East Texas oil boom of the 1930s.
Very entertaining and educative. Lots of things to see. The movie at the cinema was very interesting. Nice concept at the travel down the oil drilling well profile.

Hest museum visit ever!! Lots of information Street scene is incredibly realistic Great audio free tour Could have spent most of the day there, but only had a couple of hours Make the effort you stop Only $10 per adult admission, wort every cent and more

I love going here! If you love history, you'll love this place! It has a small town inside! Well, a life size replica. You can go in the general store and the pharmacy and some of the other places. Very cool!
Amanda H — Google review
I have passed this place many times and today was my first time to stop and visit this INCREDIBLE bit of history!!! I enjoyed taking my time looking at all the exhibits and visiting with the knowledgeable staff. The immersive style early 1900s walking museum was AMAZING! While I was there an elementary school was there full of smiles enjoying their best life! Definitely make time for a visit, you will not be disappointed! 😊
Patrick C — Google review
The museum is an excellent curation of memorabilia, interactive displays and life size replicas of the life and times when Kilgore folks struck oil. It was well worth the nominal fee and we enjoyed all of our 2 hour visit.
Mark S — Google review
We went there today with my daughter's school. I brought my 14 year old son with me and they both enjoyed it. The tour guide was great and really tried interacting with the kids a lot. Definitely worth a trip if you haven't visited before.

A ton of history! It's a really cool place!

Great museum. There is a fun old 'the way it was back then' town set up inside. We picked up a can of sun dried 'armadillo meat' in the souvenir shop.

I would rate this winery 10 stars if I could! You should make a detour on your route to come here. We were staying on property via Harvest Host and had a wonderful place to park. We visited the winery near the end of the day on a Thursday and there were only a few people on the patio. The winery has an expansive and delicious wine list and FANTASTIC food! We highly recommend the yucca fires, risotto balls & fried mushrooms. We tried an assortment of wines (did a white and red flight) and went home with 4 bottles. Amber was such a wonderful host to us while at the winery. The property is very beautiful and peaceful and we had such a relaxing time on the patio. We are so glad that we made the stop and will definitely go again if we are in the area.

Our group of couples stumbled into pure bliss on our visit to Barrels Tasting Room at Enoch’s Stomp Vineyard and Winery. We claimed a spot outside, where a gentle breeze swept over us as we took in the rolling hills and tranquil pond—a view that felt like a warm invitation to unwind and savor the day. Truly- a picture-perfect setting that set the tone for an unforgettable afternoon. The food was a delightful adventure in itself. We kicked off with Enoch’s Charcuterie, a pretty spread of meats, artisan cheeses, fruit, and crackers with all the right accompaniments—simple, yet so satisfying. My husband's down-to-earth Pepperoni pizza came next, with its house-made marinara and melty mozzarella delivering classic comfort in every bite. Then there was the Bear Creek Smokehouse pizza (my pick), a delight with garlic butter, mozzarella, and gouda mingling with tender brisket and crunchy Bear Creek sweet-fire pickles that turned each slice into a party of flavor for the palate. I had a bite of my friend's Lucille—she always brings the elegance—white truffle oil, prosciutto chips, dried figs, shaved Parmesan, and arugula drizzled with sweet balsamic glaze that lingered just right. And our faithful, more health-conscious friends both had the Greek Chicken on Cauliflower Crust. I'm so glad that we all pizza swapped because that crispy perfection of a base, topped with bright basil pesto, grilled chicken, mozzarella, feta, black olives, and red onion, was a standout I really didn’t see coming. The wine flights—five tempting options—were a treat to explore. I found my favorite in the Dry Red Reserve flight. Each pour was rich and smooth, hitting all the right notes. My friends each raved about their own picks, every flight seeming tailor-made for their tastes. Rolf, our gracious host, surprised us with a taste of the Light Portejas, and we were smitten—enough to bring a bottle home alongside our other liquid souveneirs. Before we knew it, we’d spent more than four hours dining, sipping, and laughing, lost in the magic of good company and a place that felt like it was made for moments like these. Barrels Tasting Room is one of those spots that feels like a gift—great food, wonderful wines, and a setting that encourages rest and soothes the soul. It’s a gem we’ll be talking about, and returning to, for a long time.

I’ve been visiting Enoch’s for years. Every visit is spectacular. We just did a Winery Tour with Mark and he was wonderful. You can tell he loves his job and has a true passion. Food is always 10/10, Wine is 10/10, Views and experience always a 10/10.
Julie S — Google review
We have been there for 3 wine tastings so far. We really enjoyed the ones Ron hosted for us. He knows so much about the grapes and wine from various regions. So it was quite a history lesson when he was our host. This time we had a different host and she was not as knowledgeable about grapes and wine. She was only able to tell us where the grapes or juice came from for the wine we were drinking and whether it was dry or sweet or fruity. If Ron is no longer hosting, we will probably go back to trying out other vineyards.
Lydia B — Google review
My husband and I entertained visiting family at Corks last week. The food was delicious. The view from the balcony was delightful, and the wine was great. But our mustachioed waiter ruined the experience with his neglect and rudeness. We'll think twice before ever returning.
Karen B — Google review
My best friend and I found this gem! She isn't a novice and was very impressed. As soon as we walked in, we raved about the environment and the hospitality this establishment offered! We definitely recommend you go out of your way to visit Enoch's!!

Lovely Vineyard! Whether you are running a 5k there, doing tastings, or getting married! The wine and food are excellent! Hats of to Chef Matt who is incredible and detailed chef! This is one of our favorite places to visit! They also put together some really great events! Love all of the amazing wines they have!

The Jefferson Historical Museum is housed in the former federal courthouse building constructed in 1890 and offers a captivating journey through the region's history. The museum showcases Civil War relics, Caddo Indian artifacts, pioneer tools, and various other historical pieces. Additionally, visitors can explore exhibits featuring homestead furnishings from the 1880s, antique guns, needlework, dolls, quilts, and more.
Great museum and very informative staff. Make sure to check out the model trains in the back!
Swan L — Google review
This museum is worth the visit - the staff are very nice & proud to share the history of their town! The basement is full of various antiques/artifacts in sections like blacksmith, leather shop, & so forth. The other floors display beautiful artwork, a Marshall’s office, a large collection of arrowheads, & a recreation of a late 1800s traditional family home. The best was the railroad museum, though! My son absolutely loved seeing all the details & watching the trains go around! We will definitely come back!
Heather G — Google review
Fun and interesting history museum in the quaint town of Jefferson, TX. Highly recommend to get an overview of the historical significance of this area.
Barbara J — Google review
Amazing to tour. Jefferson has an incredible and interesting history and they have many stories and artifacts from local families that have lived in the area for decades. Clerk at front desk knew so much history about the building and we were able to tour and look at all the different floors at our own pace. Be prepared, it will get stuffy and warm on the top floors, but for a historical building it is expected. Definitely recommend. Thank you for taking the time to share so much with us.
Tipper — Google review
Just wanted to thank the man who runs the model railroad museum. You listened so tentatively and truly showed interest while my sister and I shared memories of our fathers lifelong model railroad with you as well as telling us the story of the museums model railroad. You sir were the highlight of our east Texas weekend getaway! Thanks again! 💕
Kimberly V — Google review
The workers are all SO sweet and helpful. The museum is very clean. There are stairs and a small elevator. There is a lot to see, I'd plan about 1.5 to 2 hours to see it all, 1 hr if you rush through it without reading the plaques and examining everything. There are so many handmade clothing items and quilts and food items and historically significant furniture pieces and hand-bound books. I was surprised some items weren't displayed at the Smithsonian because of the significance and age. The train room is a major highlight for children. I have never seen a display so intricate, all made by hand (no touching allowed). The trains run, and there's a tiny kite that blows in the breeze (electricity and wire). The detail is amazing to see. A must-see on a trip through historic Jefferson. The photos I added are less than half of what we saw.

This is a very nice museum with very interesting things if the eighteen hundreds. There are three levels full of history. There is also an adjacent building with an “ho” train. Wonderful for train lovers. The people at the museum are super sweet and great with kids. So happy we visit this museum.

Wonderful local history museum. The building is a gem in itself. The docent was so engaging and it was clear she had been a teacher. Such a lovely person and very helpful. The train exhibit is beyond description. It is extremely detailed and extensive.

Didn't get a chance to go inside so this review is from the train. The train staff is excellent. So professional and courteous. What an enjoyable experience. They have an observation car with windows everywhere. I've always wanted to take a train ride. I want to bring my family next time.

This is a beautiful, historic building with a museuem and gift shop. The museum has hands on activities for kids as well as interesting displays for adults. There are a train engine and caboose outside on the beautiful manicured grounds that kids can climb on and play in. The staff is by FAR the most polite and helpful I have encountered at any train or bus station, not to mention airport. From the second we stepped off the bus, the staff was there to guide us and help with luggage. I was traveling with my 7 year old grandson and the assistance was greatly appreciated. Way to go, Marshall, Texas!
Leslie P — Google review
This museum/train station has a very friendly staff. It is clear that they enjoy their visitors and Amtrak passengers. We love watching the trains from here, there is a great view from the outside, second balcony. It can be confusing to find the museum, but if you pay attention to the signs, you will find it easily enough. Our kids love this place too.
Keri H — Google review
Any and all complaints about the onboard train staff should be directed straight to Amtrak in D.C. That said, this is a nice Amtrak station to visit. The station doubles as a bit of history with some displays on the waiting room. Also, there is now a picnic area by the steam engine and caboose. Be prepared to wait behind the gate to the station platform as the platform is rife with scars from freight derailments.
Josiah O — Google review
Open air Amtrak station. The train didn't spend long here as it was the middle of the night. Few people off, no one got in. If I hadn't been awake already, I would have never known we stopped here

The board of directors are working diligently to make Marshall Depot fun for the community. Recently, we attended a showing of Polar Express and Santa at the Depot. A lot of energy so expect more future events. Further, if looking for a souvenir, the Depot's gift shop is open Wednesday through Friday: 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and Saturday: 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

We got up at 4am to drive to Marshall Tx for 7:60am train. The train was 2 hrs late. No one loaded my heavy bag. The car was dirty and the airconditioner wasnt working. The staff did not offer other accommodations. Not good at all. Hopefully the next time my grands want a train ride it will be better.

This is a quaint museum so don't go looking for an all day event. It's only $10 per adult and worth it if you enjoy country music or would be interested in its history in Texas. There are very clean restrooms and a gift shop with clothes, jewelry, CDs, posters, and even chili seasoning. The woman we paid was very nice and even invited us to kick off our shoes and dance. They also have a large room for events but we did not go in it.

Caddo Lake State Park

Mentioned on
1 list
State park
Nature & Parks
Caddo Lake State Park offers a unique experience in Texas, featuring a cypress swamp with towering trees adorned with Spanish moss. Visitors can enjoy camping, boating, and fishing while observing diverse bird species and wildlife such as alligators. The serene vistas and crystal-clear waters provide an opportunity for leisurely canoe rides, although swimming is not recommended due to the presence of alligators.
This park was so nice and so unique. They had a great shop and exhibits. It was clean, beautiful, and all the rangers were so friendly and helpful. We rented a canoe and we're out on the water for around 3 hours. Although the morning was a wonderful peaceful time on the water as it grew closer to noon boats and ski jets were in an overabundance on the water. Some where very polite slowing when passing canoers but most have zero consideration or concern for smaller watercraft. We would still visit again and maybe just get out on the water earlier. We did the trails and all those short they were very nice well kept and pleasant to hike. Nothing extreme and fairly short it was nice after a morning on the lake.
Yvone M — Google review
WOW! This state park was so pretty. Not many easy trails on land and it would be best to be out on the water. But we still had a lot of fun taking in the views and having a picnic. Dog friendly too.
Gemma M — Google review
This was easily one of my favorite camping experiences in Texas. The towering trees create a magical atmosphere, and the canoe rentals are both affordable and absolutely worth it. Paddling through the wetlands was breathtaking. The rare beauty of this landscape is something you feel the moment you’re immersed in it. P.S. Sadly, no crocodiles spotted during our weekend adventure!
Johana — Google review
Our little fam camps all over, near and far from TX. 🏕️ This was our last stop on our way home from the Red River Gorge and Smoky Mountains. We had site 36 in Armadillo Run. It’s large, lots of space, plenty of room for a bigger family. The drive slopes back a bit, but was pretty even side to side. We visited in mid October. I was concerned about mosquitoes being a problem (Sea Rim SP and Ute Lake SP in NM were insanely terrible on our visits, couldn’t even stay the night). BUT we wore bug spray, and we actually didn’t see that many. I was glad for visiting later in the year. The park HQ opens at 8:15am, and they have 15 canoes to rent. 🛶 First come, first serve. It was $10/1 hr or $20/3 hrs. They have a full day option, but I don’t recall the price. They don’t take reservations after 3pm. (But the office is open till 4:45 for normal business.) We came to canoe this park, and I WOULD recommend that activity to anyone visiting. It’s beautiful. The water had no current. So calm, super easy to navigate. The Saw Mill Pond is clearly the best part. I had thought the bayou would resemble the pond, and the bayou is also beautiful, but the pond is where it’s at. We got the 3 hr option and paddled a bit over an hour, maybe 1.5 hrs because we went up and down the Big Cypress Bayou. The 3hr window would be enough for most, I think. Super duper nice park staff and volunteer/host staff. 💙 💦 The bathhouse near us was new and clean. Oct 2025. When we take our tiny camper, we don’t have a bathroom, so bathhouse cleanliness and condition are super important to us. So I’m gonna start including photos and info about bathrooms in all my campsite reviews. 👍
Donna B — Google review
Stunning! The cypress trees are just gorgeous and not like anything else in Texas! We hiked several trails but did not camp here, it was a great day trip (it’s a short drive from both Daingerfield and Atlanta state parks). Lots of great camping sites in the trees- the whole area is very wooded. Must be good fishing as we saw lots of boats going in and out. Lots of cabins, they look very nice and well maintained. It’s amazing that this park was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corp— grateful for their work as we hiked the trails they made!
Kay L — Google review
The park is smaller than expected. But the scene is really beautiful! There are 2 short hiking trials to the forest and 2 parking lots with lake observatory decks - one to the pond with trees and lily pads in the water; the other to the river. The canoe rental is strongly recommended (but you need a group of at least 2 adults so that you can lift the boat to water). The rental cost is low (much lower than kayak rental in DFW area). Padding in the pond and the river and enjoy the view!
Ran L — Google review
Loved everything about this state park & campground except the bathroom showers. They're poorly designed with immovable shower heads that spray into the dressing area & create a huge puddle in the dressing areas that won't drain. Also, the handicapped shower barely has enough room for a person to sit down on the bench & there was black mold all over the grout. Other than that the park is beautiful, the woods & trees are gorgeous, RV sites are level & clean, & other facilities are great.
Renee K — Google review
This is our second time at Caddo Lake. We love it! We've been here in the summertime and fall. 🌈 It's fully shaded, so during the summer, it wasn't suffocating. During the fall, it was chill and friendly during the day and cold at night. Perfect weather for an early morning and night fire. 🤾‍♀️ The trails are clean and easy to navigate. We did then with 3 toddlers (3, 2, and 1). You can also rent canoes at the Park for $10 an hour, but only 3 can fit in the canoe, so my little one and I had to sit that one out. However, my husband and 2-year-old had a blast navigating the lake. 🚻 They have family bathrooms with showers (and hot water!), which made the shower time so much easier to handle between my husband and me. They are not squeaky clean, but decent enough not to gross you out (kind of). 🌳 The scenery is like a dream. Beautiful sunsets and breathtaking sunrises. You really feel at peace. 👥 The staff is friendly and helpful. We felt pretty safe at night. We're definitely coming back for a third! Time.

Captain Ron's Swamp Tours

Boat tour agency

Boat Tours
Absolutely outstanding swamp tour with Captain Ron! I took my 90-year-old dad on Captain Ron’s Swamp Tour, and we both had an unforgettable experience. Captain Ron is the real deal—professional, informative, passionate about the bayou, and incredibly personable. He made everyone feel safe and welcome from the moment we stepped on the boat. The boat was comfortable and well-shaded, offering protection from both sun and rain. Captain Ron came fully prepared for the summer heat with cold water and refreshing wet towels—such thoughtful touches that showed he genuinely cares about his guests. He shared fascinating insights about the local wildlife, plant life, and bayou history, all with great humor and enthusiasm. Everyone on board had the best time—this is more than just a tour, it’s an experience. Highly recommend Captain Ron’s Swamp Tours to anyone of any age looking for a memorable, safe, and engaging way to explore the Louisiana bayou!

His narration is excellent, providing information about the history of the lake and its inhabitants in a way that is understandable. It is delivered in a way that it leads to questions and ongoing dialog. I will definitely book another tour the next time I am in the area, and would like to coordinate with seeing the full moon over the lake which I believe would be magical

A delightful and informative trip. This was our second time out with Captain Ron’s Swamp Tours. I highly recommend Captain Ron to anyone looking for a relaxing Caddo Lake trip. We want to come back for a Starry Nights cruise …

Loved our night tour! My kids enjoyed the sunset and the starry filled night. Thank you Captain Ron, you were very knowledgeable about the area and so receptive to our kids questions. I definitely recommend this tour 100x over.

Visited Caddo Lake for the first time and really enjoyed our tour with Captain Ron! Comfortable pontoon, timely and very knowledgeable. Took us through several different “landscapes” of the bayou and lake. Thanks for a great trip! We look forward to exploring more on our own thanks to your good advice 😊

Captain Ron was so kind and led such a great tour! He took extra time to show us the place he loves so much and is so passionate about. We enjoyed hearing about the incredible history of the lake and the nature that makes this place so special. Our two boys had a blast and so did we!

Gators and Friends

Zoo
Zoos & Aquariums
Wildlife park with alligators in their natural habitat & a petting zoo stocked with tame animals.
We had a great day here! We had a group ranging in age from 18 to 50 and we all enjoyed ourselves watching the gator shows and feeding all the animals. Two in our group did the zip lining and they loved it. All the staff were super friendly and the animals all looked well taken care of. Can't wait to go back once the rest of the zip lining course is open. One thing to keep in mind is that they are no longer running the go carts.
Thomas S — Google review
Such a fun and memorable experience. We were able to feed all the animals except the gators and lemurs, which was still exciting to see up close. The whole place was clean, well organized, and very family friendly. We loved the pony rides, the baby gator encounter, and the gator feeding show. The Italian ice was a perfect treat, and the arcade gave us a nice break from the heat. The staff was friendly and the gift shop had a great selection. Highly recommend visiting. We’ll definitely be back!
Concepsion M — Google review
Great experience seeing the alligators and learning from the team that are all very knowledgeable and friendly. Special thanks to JD and Kyle who took me on the 7 zip lines. The zip lines are by far the safest ones I've ever done and they run it safety first with a focus on fun and learning. Highly recommended for the inner child.
Sebastien K — Google review
Our group of 5 reserved zip lines well in advance and paid the required deposit. When we checked in the first of the two ladies working inside had no idea how to split our payment. The second lady overcharged me almost $50 and kept telling me there was nothing else she could do. The manager walked in and started taking care of it but he had no clue there's a discounted price on the zip lines for groups of 5 or more on their website. He was able to get it straightened out and we went on our way. We watched the alligator feeding but couldn't hear hardly anything the guy said. We were able to hold the baby alligator and feed the animals, all before our time to go zip lining. That's when we found out we had 2 more groups for a total of 5 more people going with us. I was really upset that after paying over $300 we had to share this experience with a crying child and other people we didn't know. I feel our group was large enough and we spent plenty of money to go alone. We paid for an experience, not to have to get close and personal to other sweaty and smelly strangers. At our final landing the manager came up and told our guide he was taking too much time getting everyone unhooked and the line for the next person, a matter of seconds. I understand seconds add up and I understand they're there to make money... But, again, I paid a lot of money for this experience for my 2 kids who are both graduating high school and shipping off to the Army next week. I did not pay for the experience of the manager coming on the platform and scolding and embarrassing our guide and making us feel uncomfortable. That should be done in private. Once we were unharnessed and free to go back into the park we went back to the animals because we were sure we hadn't seen, fed, and petted them all... But we had... If you're going just for the animals the ticket price is way too high, in my opinion. If you're going for the zip line be prepared to have an amazing time, but also be aware that you may be spending a small fortune to have to share your experience and be really close to strangers...

If you're looking for a quick and fun family outing, the Gators and Friens is a great place for it, especially for young adventurers! From the moment you step through the gates, it's clear that this place is designed with children in mind. Wide, stroller-friendly walkways and clearly marked paths make it easy to explore. Interactive exhibits and touch-friendly encounters keep little hands and curious minds engaged. Whether it’s feeding baby goats, watching gators during feeding time, or petting llamas and kangaroos, the sanctuary offers plenty of hands-on fun.

First of all, the staff was AMAZING. So friendly and knowledgeable. My kids loved the gator feeding tours throughout the day. We also did the 7 line ziplining and had a blast. Highly recommend to visit, so glad we did!

Chimp Haven is a special place for our chimps with a wonderful, very knowledgeable staff. I enjoyed my tour with my group is 25 people very much. We divided into 2 groups & rode in golf carts that held 13 people. The entire group rode in a nice “wagon, that would automatically lower for us to step into and out of, with seating” that was pulled by a vehicle. We did climb a set of stairs to get a view of some chimps from above but an elevator was available. I enjoyed the tour very much and would encourage others to visit.

Nestled in the heart of Bossier City, Margaritaville Resort Casino offers a delightful escape infused with an island atmosphere. This casual casino hotel features an inviting outdoor pool and a variety of dining and entertainment options that cater to all tastes. Guests can indulge in rejuvenating spa treatments, including massages and facials, ensuring relaxation before diving into the excitement of the casino.
We had a wonderful night. Especially thanks to our server Brittney. She is so kind and professional. She goes out of her way to make sure my daughter and I are taken care of. Her service alone is reason enough to come back.

Comfortable hotel with every convenience, clean and quiet. The casino was nice, modern and well staffed. Pool area is really beautiful with a nice view, the only downside was the cigar bar hours, no late nights during the week. But plenty of outdoor areas for a cigar and the weather was great!
Pete C — Google review
Just visited this establishment this past weekend and the appearance of the inside of the hotel is wonderful! If you are someone with a handicapped placard, just note that anytime in the afternoon or night, you will not find a handicapped spot. It may be a longer walk for you that could be difficult.Especially if you use a wheelchair. One good thing that I like is that if you are a veteran or active duty, you get a member advantage card which is different than a regular player's card. As a new member, I got extra benefits because of being veteran. I also love that you get twenty percent off in restaurants.Such as jimmy's seafood and steak. Out of all the casinos that i've ever been to around the united states.I would have to say this one had the best odds of winning. Checking into the hotel though was kind of mediocre. There's not a lot of front desk staff to check you in.There were only two when we arrived. That day and no one is in any hurry to apologize for the long wait. You are just standing in line for a while. The elevators were kind of jolting when it comes to a stop. But the atmosphere of the elevator in the hallways, and the room door colors was wonderful. I did not like that. There was no microwave inside the room, but they do offer a mini fridge, as well as one of those little individual coffee pots where you put the coffee tray in. I do not drink coffee, so that's not something that worked for me. The cleanliness of the room could have been better as far as the service members, sweeping up the room and making sure that the chairs in the room were clean. Do love the walk in shower though. The bathroom was really nice, but they do not offer lotion like most hotels do. All in all though, I would have to say the hotel is comfortable. And the casino is nice, but it is not non smoking. May visit the casino again, but probably will not stay here again.

We went to this casino specifically to catch a Billy Bob Thornton concert performance. We also did some gambling and paid the casinos light bill for probably 2 minutes, which means we lost our money but we had a wonderful time. Staff is friendly, facility is clean. Concert venue was very nice. My friend that I took for her birthday is disabled and accommodations to seat her promptly was much appreciated and unexpected. We had a wonderful experience over all at this casino!
TERRY B — Google review
I stayed there for two nights and had a pretty good time all in all. It started with an extra charge that I was unaware of and no one at the front desk could really give me a lot of information about it other than the fact that it’s just a deposit it’ll be refunded. I paid for everything online…but either way we drove 5 1/2 hours to get there so we were ready to get to the room. The hotel was nice. The employees were very polite. Got up to the room, a double queen bed with a river view, just as promised. You can however see quite a bit of the rooftop below and AC units but you have a beautiful view of the river and Samstown. The sunset was beautiful and the sunrise on a foggy morning with people out there fishing was quite nice! As for the casino itself, it was awesome! It was huge and had a lot of awesome games, all the games you want to play and it let you play. Win some lose some. It wasn’t bad at all. My only gripe, and this is a big one, was the mattresses!!! Good Lord this casino was built in 2013 and I guarantee you the bedding is original. They were sunken in towards the inside where people would normally lay. You could feel the springs in them and they were hard as a rock! The covers were miserable as well. Very thin and cold. They were more like a weighted blanket in a psych ward rather than a comfortable, inviting bedspread you would expect to find in a beautiful hotel room. The pillows were awful as well. You know the pillows with a lot of air in them but as soon as the air lets out it’s like 1 million tiny cotton balls in there. It’s like they took a rat nest and sewed it up in a pillowcase! I mean you cannot sleep whatsoever unless you’re blind drunk! You’re gonna wake up sore regardless so don’t worry . Your neck, shoulder and hip will perish in the night💀 it’s pretty rough. I was unimpressed with that especially for what you pay for the rooms and how much money that place has coming in. I expected a lot more because at the end of the day it’s a hotel. There was a lot of people in there, everybody’s drinking and having a good time 90% of them probably slept on the floor but if you are one of the 10% that enjoys a comfortable bed This place is not for you. if you just want to gamble and have a good time and sleep somewhere else it was awesome🤘 The machines let you play. Food and the restaurants are kind of bougie. Don’t expect to walk around and just be able to buy a slice of pizza on the go or something like that. It’s oyster bars and seafood themes, that kind of thing very expensive I did not try them. I read reviews online. I did not spend my money on it. Do your own research there all in all it was a great time because We did not leave broke so if you’re there to gamble and just pace yourself, enjoy yourself and play some games for a couple days…I did OK. The hotel was nice. No parking deck but a huge parking lot. The food there is expensive but there’s options all around. The hotel rooms are clean and fresh and the staff is wonderful. The beds are absolute trash!
JD R — Google review
Went to spend a day away while visiting a friend, the hotel charged and kept my $100 deposit without any explanation. We barely stayed in the room, left it in better condition than we found it, there is no reason the deposit should have been held. They are still refusing to return my money. We stayed there for an affordable get away, not to be scammed out of my deposit.
Katherine S — Google review
I visited the casino only. The location is convenient, parking was accessible and close to entrance. The casino area was clean and well organized. Employees kept cleaning the slot machines, picking up trash etc. the dealers were kind and welcoming. Overall a great place to gamble and enjoy yourself.

Nice place to walk. The lights on the bridge are very cool. I got to see a proposal and actually took the video for them, I hope it came out ok! Good luck on your new life together.

Wish the developer and the city would work to bring this place back to life. I would say im surprised its still in such good repair but there is almost no one here anymore and literally a handful of businesses when there use to be dozens. Such a beautiful idea, so poorly executed.

This is my second time visiting this place, while traveling cross country, and I can tell you that the first time I was here I enjoyed it much more than this trip. There was much more enjoyment, and there was more people in the boardwalk. I actually didn’t wanna leave, however well visiting this trip I felt like I was the only one in the boardwalk, the streets and stores were empty and there was only a few a few stores open And out of those few stores that are opened the majority of them were racist towards me and they also lacked the variety of options or so. The employees told me that they didn’t have anything available.

We had an absolute amazing experience at Horseshoe Casino and Hotel. The staff is absolutely wonderful. Friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and nice. The bed was comfortable. Also, the casino staff was great as well. And we even walk out with a little extra cash in our pockets. We will be visiting again for sure. 10/10 recommend.

We were driving back from New Orleans to Kansas with our 29 foot camper we had just spent 16 days in on a big trip. We wanted a bathtub and a King size bed. The Horseshoe was right on the way, the room was exactly what we were looking for, there were gaming and food options steps away. They gave me space where I was comfortable leaving the truck and camper parked and a great rate to boot. I will stay again the next time I am coming through this part of the country.

Recently stayed in a king deluxe. Room was clean, very spacious & comfortable. This room may have had the largest bathtub I've ever seen! Very nice overall room. Comfy bed. Room seemed so quiet, no noisey neighbors which was also nice! Downsides, TV only offered locals with no Netflix, YouTube or other streaming apps to sign into. No USB ports. Refrigerator only, no microwave. Pod coffee maker didnt work. Hotel was clean, staff throughout the hotel were all very friendly & helpful. Visited several on site restaurants & not one bad meal was had. Highly recommend the Port & Benions steaks house! Casino seemed a bit stingy but we arent big gamblers. Would stay again.

Pros-Completely different atmosphere compared to Bigger casinos. Kept Very clean. Service from staff was outstanding. I only visited the casino. Cons- not a very big variety of slot selections. They have so many of the same slot games all around the casinos. And huge amount Buffalo slots. If you like playing that particular slot this is definitely the place to find out. Buffalo slots everywhere.

UPDATE: Updating this review since they have took the appropriate action. I had a typo in the person's email, however, their customer distro was included too just in case a discrepancy like that happened. Need better communication flows. Otherwise I thank the SVP/GM for stepping in to assist :) ________________ Hi, I’m following up AGAIN to get my Caesars Rewards tier corrected to Platinum Salute (military). I verified in person at Horseshoe Bossier City on Oct 11, 2025 and provided two IDs (DL and Disabled Vet card). I also emailed those images on Oct 13. As of today, my online account still shows Gold. This should be a simple correction. I have upcoming plans that rely on Platinum benefits, and the continued delay is unacceptable. My BBB complaint has been filed and assigned ID 24050272. Please update my account to Platinum Salute immediately and send written confirmation once complete. If anything else is needed from me, tell me exactly what and I’ll provide it right away. Otherwise, please escalate to a supervisor and close this out today.

First time staying at this property. The rooms are huge and clean. Two complaints I have is with the bathroom - mold in multiple areas of the bathroom. A 4 star property should not have mold anywhere. Secondly, the AC controls seem like they were made in the 70's. Hard to control the room temperature and annoying temp control. Overall, good variety of places to eat (a little on the pricey side though). I don't gamble so cannot give any feedback on the casino.
Zain K — Google review
Spent a couple nights midweek so on the plus side the room rate was very reasonable even with the ridiculous Resort Fee which is nothing but a scam for basic services you get for free at any normal Hotel. Casino was decent sized but was shocked they scan everyone's ID to enter, I've been in Casino's in over 30 States and multiple Countries and that was a first so it was any easy decision to go to other Casinos in town for my gambling which don't need your ID ..they really need to reconsider this policy as I'll never ever submit to that again...the room was decent with an oversized tub which would be fine if you wanted a bath but a little inconvenient for showering... thermostat was so old all the numbers were worn off so impossible to know what you are setting the temp to...could hear people coughing and talking in the room next door so not very soundproof.... parking garage was large and easy to find a convenient spot but nothing really within walking distance so you're kind of stuck there unless you want to drive....in short I definitely will not return and in the future will stick to the Casino's on the other side of the river, cannot recommend.

this place is truly spectacular. I visited from out of state and was so shocked there is no admission fee for this place (please consider donating)!! I have visited the Louvre in Paris and this place actually reminded me of it. From American art, European art, and local artists, to its absolutely stunning botanical garden, this place really blew me away with its collection. the attendants in each room are also very friendly and knowledgable- I recommend chatting/asking them any questions you have about the art.

This lovely museum nestled among tall pine trees on 40 acres is free to visit with plenty of parking. This Shreveport staple is the largest in the city. The exhibits (American and European) range from statues to mixed media to oil paintings. Don't overlook the beautiful and serene gardens, open sunrise to sunset.

This art gallery has an extensive collection that blew us away. There was artwork ranging from Egyptian ruins to paintings by famous Thomas Moran, Bierstadt, Salvador Dali, etc. The botanical gardens are well kept however not currently in bloom since the weather is cooling down. The path around the gardens is tranquil nonetheless and open to the public. The museum is free, highly recommend donating on your way out. We will certainly be bringing out of town relatives back to this gem!

A surprisingly broad collection, from European paintings to American Western art, set in a quiet gallery. The real gem is the surrounding garden, especially in spring when the azaleas bloom. It’s calm and less crowded than big-city museums, making it a pleasant cultural stop.

We went over the Fourth of July weekend and had a great time. We were in box 6A right on the finish line. If we go back I would move over a box to maybe 4 or 5 as there is a big black pole blocking the view of the track. All the staff was friendly and polite. We had a few bites from the Inside Rail restaurant which were all pretty good. The casino and restaurant area are all updated, however the track area is not. Quite dated. Even though it was indoors the AC was not able to keep up and the area was quite hot and stuffy. Definitely needs an HVAC update. All in all I would go again. No long lines at the betting stations.

Nice casino, no table games but lots of slots. Love watching the horse races and the Superderby is a blast. This is one of my top 3 favorite casinos in Shreveport Bossier. Free drinks in the casino and reasonably priced snacks and beverages in the track area. They have areas for kids and I brought my kids to watch camel and ostrich races a few years ago. They loved it!

So much information and history in such a small part of the world. The attendant working was super friendly and helpful. We enjoyed walking through history on the grounds. Lots to learn here! It's very well taken care of inside and out. Clean!

This place is a hidden gem. Amy and Daniel were phenomenal people. Daniel is an Army veteran. Both were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Entrance fee is only $4, military only $2. Highly recommend. Would give this place six stars if I could.

I love the History. Great information nice presentation.

Wonder little museum! New to the area and was pleasantly surprised by this place. A small area that is rich in history of the civil war. They have a short walking trail (lacking large markers due to weather wear and tear but they are working on it). There are numbered markers which you’ll follow with a cool informational card. The card tells you what happens at each marker. Very relaxing trail and well kept up. Friendly staff and very helpful! There is a fee for entrance (which helps fund the property). It should be about $4 (cash or card). They do offer military discounts as well. Wonderful little slice of history and a nice trail to engage in and decompress! If it’s rained recently, consider bringing shoes you can get dirty but you should be alright!

Some of our relatives fought at this 1864 battle ground. The short film was informative but they reported that this film is the only copy. I hope they preserve it digitally before it ages beyond repair. The museum was full of artifacts, photos and information. Affordable for a family and worth the visit.

Off the beaten trail but worth a stop especially if you're a history buff. Friendly knowledgeable staff. Small but impressive museum that presents the battle in excellent detail. There's a pleasant walking trail that covers the battlefield, with markers describing what occurred.

Wonderful historical site that is state funded and usually open. We walked the grounds and looked at the monuments up close. Recommended when in Mansfield.

Top tier group of people all around. From the owner and guides to the assistants at the marina, as good as they comej. They will put in the work to give you the opportunity available. Fished 3 days with Matt and he was a friend to my wife and I by the time we left. Highly recommend LTD for both the education and the hospitality, the great fish are a bonus.

Pop and I brought two of our Grandchildren ages 16 & 17 on a crappie trip with Matt. We’ve been fishing with LTD Matt for several years and we always have a fun experience! Their guides are all very professional and do what it takes to make sure to catch fish, have fun and be safe! There was a storm coming up and Matt made sure to get us to the dock way before it caught up to us. I appreciate that so much! Can’t have a better fishing experience than with LTD!

Best charter EVER! JT & Gloria run an outstanding business. While our weather wasn't the best, JT put us on fish all day long! We highly recommend Living the Dream Guide Service. We'll be back:)
Diane J — Google review
Our son asked for a Crappie fishing trip for his 11th birthday and Capt. Matt and the LTD crew delivered just that and more! Our family had a blast and we caught a ton of fish! Hands down we highly recommend you book your trip with LTD Guide Service! Not only is their hospitality top notch but the knowledge their guides have from old school fishing to using live scope to general information about Toledo Bend Lake is astounding!
Hollie C — Google review
We fished with Captain Randy. He was patient with each of us, worked hard to get us on fish. He shared his knowledge of fishing and the lake as much as he worked to catch fish. We look forward to fishing with him again, it was a great trip. LTD is top notch. Awesome marina and great staff. Everyone we came in contact with were friendly and helpful.

Great service from the 1st day to the last. JT, Gloria & their crewe are great! We will definitely be booking another trip.

Our guide put us on the fish at the 1st place we stopped. We had a very enjoyable time & plan to do it again this year. We definitely recommend LTD guide service!

My husband and I spent the day fishing with Damon. He was very knowledge not to mention patient with us. We laughed and caught plenty of fish. He even shared a little history of the lake with us. We will definitely be returning and fishing with Damon and Living The Dream. The bar area was a very pleasant end to a very pleasant day.

Lake Bistineau State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Park bordering a lake boasts bayou scenery & abundant hardwood forest for picnicking & camping.
Another great State park spent 2 weeks here has a lot of stuff to do it has a boat launch you can fish off the bank they have playgrounds walking trails disc golf boats for rent cabins group camps friendly staff roads or pavement sites were clean bathrooms were clean like I said I don't think you can go wrong with a state park
Jamie F — Google review
Aside from the guy at the checkpoint entrance not knowing anything about the yearly pass for state parks, the remainder of the visit was pretty nice. A beautiful park with many scenic routes and camping a cabin options. Love there dangerous snake decision tree poster
Cris B — Google review
Wish I could have gotten out on the water to explore the lake more, but I was able to get what I came for right from the boat launch area. There was a couple small groups of people fishing there as well.
Cody T — Google review
Even though it was over 100 degrees the day we went we enjoyed a small trail hike and sitting by the beautiful lake. We are some snacks under the covered eating area near the lake and enjoyed the view of the unique trees with romantic moss dangling down. Gal at the entrance lodge was very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this area, and already have been talking up a camping trip here during a cooler time of year. They have cabins and a screened in area by the lake to clean any fish you may catch!
Jennifer G — Google review
Beautiful park that is quintessential north Louisiana. Spanish moss hangs from the numerous trees. Campsites are well equipped and spacious. Trails are fun. We camped during drawdown, so no water view, but the dock at our site (CI0046) was still nice to sit at. The park is on the smaller side, which can be a good thing. We live fairly close to the area, so there wasn't much for us to explore, but visitors can enjoy the Shreveport/Bossier area which is only about a 35-40 minute drive away. Couple of cons. Roads are very rough in some spots. Not enough trash dumpsters/cans. Only one set of dumpsters way at the beginning of the loop. No ice on site. Had one very old soda machine. Overall, Louisiana needs to do better with having gift shops, ice machines at their parks. They're missing out on a great opportunity. We always love to get t-shirts and stickers, etc. And.. this is an important one for tent campers. Despite the fact that sites are labeled as having tent pads, none of them do (this incorrect info is the main reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5). Not even the tent only sites. We were able to find a spot to put the tent, but there was a bit of an incline, which made for some comedic events. Especially when trying to get up and forgetting, while half asleep, that you're not quite on level ground. We would have put the tent on the lovely deck at our site, but I could not find a way to properly stake the tent. Overall, it was an absolutely lovely stay. Thanks for the memories!
Badkitty 7 — Google review
Pretty quiet the weekday I was there but beautiful with the cypress growing in the water.
Madhu F — Google review
Beautiful, peaceful park. Well maintained. Decks on most sites. Clean restrooms and the campground restroom has heat. The lake is in drawdown starting in early fall to control invasive plants, but it is still beautiful and fun to walk or bike ride through the lake, and it makes for great photos! The trails were well marked and beautiful for our bike rides. We will always go back. Love this park.
Marygayle B — Google review
We LOVED this state park. During this time of the year is the absolute best time to come. We had a deck site which was AMAZING. There are a couple of pull through sites but mostly back in. Restrooms and laundry rooms were clean and well kept. We used both.

Hodges Gardens

Gardens
Botanical gardens, wildlife & a 225-acre lake are highlights in a state park that also hosts events.
Gorgeous park!!! Spent a couple of hours viewing with my family and it was great. Sadly, Louisiana is considering cutting funding for state parks and Hodges Garden will close without it. Please consider donating and fighting against the cuts so that we can keep our parks for tourism!!!
Rebecca B — Google review
I hope that this park will find the funds to reopen. It's such a beautiful and serene Park. I especially enjoyed the herb garden . I stayed in a spacious one-bedroom cabin close to the lake shore. The cabin had a fully equipped kitchen. It was especially nice to have a flock of geese visit me every morning and every evening before their bedtime.
Donna — Google review
Beautiful view with nice amenities. Renting a cabin for a vacation or night away is a great idea for a family getaway. The "locals" are very friendly also.
Garrett S — Google review
After looking at the pics and other info about Hodges Garden, I wish that I would've had the chance to visit it. It looks very serene and peaceful, the lake is very beautiful too. I'm sure that it had some good fishing but I could just get in a kayak or tube and just float around the lake enjoying the peace of being on the water. I would have loved to have visited the waterfall, I spent a summer in North Carolina and that's where I fell in love with waterfalls and their beauty. Very disappointed that it was a victim of budget cuts.
Geoffrey R — Google review
Walking around the gardens you can see the past beauty of this, kinda like walking through an abandoned utopia, it's pretty neat. The areas that are kept up look amazing! But with limited staff and it's funding being cut they have had to abandon quite a few projects but that doesn't deter from the beauty of this place. Once upon a time this would have been a gorgeous place and it still is beautiful today
Mel — Google review
I LOVE this park for many reasons! Since it's located away from any major city, you can see lots of stars on a clear night. It's peaceful and quiet. The park rents out canoes and kayaks so you can enjoy being on the lake that's located in the center of the park. They have cabins, tent camping sites, and a primitive campsite (my favorite!) that's on an old airstrip. The gardens are BEAUTIFUL, especially in Spring when all the flowers are blooming. It's a great place to get away for a day or for multiple days. If you need to go to the store, there is a Dollar General within 10 minutes from the park in Hornbeck. If you haven't been here before, you should check it out and see for yourself! :)
Mary B — Google review
I would have thought that the state would have done more to fix the place up.There was not as many flowers as I remembered and Flag Island was completely closed. Also the geyser in the middle of the lake wasn't working anymore. Its still very scenic, but the overall condition has been better. The entrance road is weathered and bumpy. My first trip here was 1966 and I've been back many times.Sadly, I won't be back.
Doug J — Google review
Such a treat! We went 2 years ago for my birthday and it was absolutely amazing. The natural garden was heavy with vines and allowed to grow freely, and the kept gardens were manicured and full of blooming flowers and little rabbits. My favorite was the bog garden, where irises and tulips grew up out of swampy marsh and little ducks waded in the ponds. Lots of different geocaches here and plenty of walking trails. Not sure how it is now, but I'm holding out that things are still beautiful.

Kaffie-Frederick Inc.

Hardware store
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled in the heart of historic downtown Natchitoches, Louisiana, Kaffie-Frederick Inc. stands as the state's oldest general store, offering a delightful journey back to simpler times. This charming establishment is brimming with an eclectic mix of items that evoke nostalgia—from hardware and housewares to classic toys like Radio Flyer and unique gifts. Visitors can marvel at the original freight elevator and even witness transactions made through a beautifully preserved 1910 cash register, still in use today.
This place is a historic gem. Honestly just to be able to shop in a store so historic with so much history is amazing. It is so neat to think of how many generations has been shopping here let alone running this place. Check out the cash register that’s over 100 years old that they still use every day. Definitely worth stopping by.
Hunter — Google review
Very cool store, a little pricy tho. Employees are super nice and very helpful so a premium price is worth it.
Jared “ — Google review
The historic aspect of it is really neat. As you wander around it will have original parts of the store and explain it. The store itself is like part hardware store part home goods. You can buy PVC pipe in one area and pickle grabbers in another. Perfume and jewelry to kids toys and saws. A little over priced for the things. I’d like to have seen more local items etc
Nomes — Google review
Absolutely love this store! It's historical significance would make this an interesting stop anyway. Add the collection of all kinds of interesting products for sale. We have not left empty handed.
Keith K — Google review
Very good store with any useful items. Jonathan however was very rude. Just needed some PVC, and he was not pleased to help me. I did get my material. But, was happy to leave. Spent over 100.00

Super cool store, lots of unique gifts and old style toys plus hardware. Great Christmas shop upstairs too. Highly recommended!
Starryeyedprincess — Google review
The employee upstairs, I believe his name was Justin, was extremely helpful. The store itself is incredible. It’s a true general store that has a fun exploration feeling rather than the generic Walmart feeling that is perfunctory and monotonous. This store is a piece of history and I can close my eyes and see our ancestors walking along the floors. A genuine enjoyment
Orange F — Google review
Love the store! It was adorable and filled with a bunch of goodies. A kind woman downstairs explained that there was an upstairs section I could continue shopping in - I went upstairs and the young lady responsible for upstairs followed my fiancé and I around. It put a sour taste in my mouth and we left promptly. I hope that this was an abnormal experience, and doesn’t happen to anyone else.

Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site

Mentioned on
21 lists
Historical place museum
Sights & Landmarks
Fort St. Jean Baptiste State Historic Site is a replica of the original 1716 fort built by French colonists, making it the first permanent European settlement in Louisiana. Situated near the original site on Cane River Lake, the historical site features a museum and reconstructed buildings such as a chapel, storeroom, and barracks using 19th-century techniques. Visitors can explore the museum and replica fort to gain insight into the early inhabitants of Natchitoches.
We took a school group. The 8th graders were engaged. It was a great experience.
Kimberly L — Google review
All I can say is wow! Highly worth the stop. Only $4 per person and worth every penny. The replication gives a wonderful insight into the size and daily life on the fort. The employees there were super kind and informative even though we came in 30mins before closing on a Saturday. We had to get a crash course, but could have spent longer.
Micah F — Google review
Today was Christmas on the Cane at Fort St Jean Baptiste State Historic Site. It is replica of the original Military and trading Fort. The very knowledgeable staff was demonstrating life in the 18th century. They were dressed in period clothing demonstrating cooking, rifle shooting, blacksmithing and making fire. They also have examples of items that were traded such as furs and beads. It's a must see for all ages so mark your calendar for next year!!
CHAR — Google review
Awesome experience ! The museum offers a nice video that gives a better understanding of the life in this area during the French colonialist time. We were really happy to discover the real size fort replica in which the colons where living. They have an original map of the fort and where able to build it like it was in the 18th century. It’s a must seen and a really well thought museum and ground.
Laetitia M — Google review
Great replica of a French fort. All the staff is very welcoming and we've had a very good time learning about the history.
JitkaKac — Google review
Really cool historical site / museum, where you can see an exact replica of the old Fort St. Jean Baptiste which was originally located not far from here. Even being a replica, the attention to detail put into the fort gives you an immersive feeling of what it was like being here over 200 years ago. The museum is small but has a few awesome dioramas as well as artifacts. No question that this is worth the stop and $4 entry.
J A — Google review
There was almost no traffic when we visited this historic gem. Staff was super friendly, the Fort was impressive (even as a replica), and the cost was next to nothing. Highly recommend visiting if you're into history.

Tried to take a tour but it had already started and was half over and they still wanted $25 dollars per person to take a tour that was half over. The self guided walk around tour was $15 per person. Way overpriced for a family of five.

Kent Plantation House

Historical place museum
Sights & Landmarks
French-colonial plantation house built in 1796, featuring guided tours & grounds with outbuildings.
We had an amazing time at the camp plantation house. The tour guide for the house was amazing she needs so much detail and history. The house has been amazingly preserved. The Furnishing is mostly original to the house. The grounds are not all original to the plantation. But each outbuilding serves a purpose and tell us a little bit of History. I was fascinated with each of the outbuildings and the history that go went along with them
Randy B — Google review
Great place to tour, and the tour guide was supper nice and fun to talk to. They have the incorrect time for their tours on the website. When we got there, they ended up doing a tour just for us, which was so nice.
Andrea S — Google review
I loved the tour guides! They were knowledgeable and answered all of our questions. This was my first plantation tour and won't be my last. I loved the little gift shop as well. Great preserved artifacts. Thank you ladies! As an American descendant of slaves I feel that it's important to learn of our history.
Andie A — Google review
My husband and I were traveling through Alexandria, and decided to visit Kent House. Our guides were fun, friendly, and knowledgeable. I saw a few things here that I have not seen before. The house had quite a few original furnishings, pictures, and documents. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and would definitely recommend.
Brandy H — Google review
I visited this plantation with my family because I was interested in learning about the history of plantations. After our experience, I have mixed feelings about it because the first tour guide was very informative and respectful in presenting the information. The second tour guide had her own biased views which didn't fit within a professional setting. While visiting these sites provide a learning experience, including the showcasing of the realities of slavery, I believe it's important to approach these visits thoughtfully. I want to clarify that learning about this topic does not make slavery acceptable, rather it should encourage awareness and reflection.
Alba L — Google review
It was such a good experience, the ladies were so nice, showing us around, giving us all the details about the plantation, and nice little gift shop to bring a souvenir back to texas.
Kayla M — Google review
We visited this plantation as a family. We were visiting out of town and decided to take the kids to this tour. The tour guide was very informative and he gave us very detailed description of the owners house. I think less time was spent on the slave quarters. They could have talked more about the hardships that the slaves went through but that part was skipped..

Alexandria Zoological Park

Zoo
Zoos & Aquariums
Zoo with international-themed habitats for exotic wildlife & tours on a scale-model train.
I had an amazing time at this zoo with my family. The tortoises were so cute 😭 there were lots of animals but I feel like I missed a few of them. I didn’t see any otters but maybe they just weren’t out yet? I got there a little after they opened in the morning. But the tickets are a reasonable price, the staff was nice, the park had beautiful scenery, there were plenty of nice and clean bathrooms, a café where you can get drinks and good food, and plenty of seating!!
Taebear V — Google review
The zoo was nice and had a lot more animals than I expected. I'm not sure if it was because of the time we got there, but a lot of the larger animals were not out. Overall, there is a lot to look at, and we had a great time walking around and checking it out.
Andrea S — Google review
Amazing zoo! I love the immersion of this zoo compared to other zoos in the state. Also the enclosures are awesome and plenty big enough for all the animals.
Tyler I — Google review
I've been to a lot of different zoos including Brazil and Australia but I have to say this is up there with the one in Singapore. Every time I go I forget the path they do really good job of blending everything in and immersing you the animals all seem very laid back. The train ride is a must, it just sort of completes the trip.
Jaymes B — Google review
I haven’t been to this zoo in almost 30 years but just remembering the beautiful moments I shared with my Grandmother here, I decided to look up the recent photos. I can’t tell you how heartwarming it is to see you still have the koi, the flamingos, and the peacocks. I have some beautiful memories of your zoo and it looks exactly the same. I am so PROUD of you that the upkeep is phenomenal after all the years. When I visit back home, this absolutely will be a stop for me and my family. Thank you to all of your staff and management for taking care of these animals and providing a great facility for local residents to enjoy. <3

I come here every-time I visit my grandparents in pineville, great size for kids to walk around and a large variety of animals! $2.50 gets you a large cup of fish food and you can feed the koi they have! $3 for a train ride around the property, Gift shop isn’t too expensive either

Paragon Casino Resort

Casino
Casinos & Gambling
Traditional rooms in a glitzy casino resort with a concert arena, 2 pools & 8 bars/eateries.
We visit this place 2-3 times a year! The Paragon Casino has something for everyone of all ages. The rooms are reliably clean, the staff is always professional and kind. I have the best casino host Preston, he makes sure the red carpet is laid out for me and my family. Every morning we went for a walk through their beautiful park, we went to the movies as a family. We played bingo, and we did the virtual golf games. This place is a little off the beaten path, but we always enjoy our stay. It's worth the 5 hour drive.
Vanessa S — Google review
Rooms are clean but the bathroom area could use more attention. My commode didn’t smell the best. However I love their table games (blackjack)! Still gives you a fighting chance with the 2 decks! Plus they will feed you well. One of my favorite places to go

Attended the LSFMA conference there & had an awesome time. Didn't/don't gamble so can't vouch for the casino but the lunch they catered for the conference was some of the best brisket you'll find. Just attended the classes during the day & dinner somewhere in the resort each night with some reps with 1 of the sponsors. I parked my truck Wednesday when I arrived & never seen it again until time to leave Friday afternoon

Loved the big television. Ac worked great. Staff was caring and polite. Kids were making noise down the hallway but that stopped before I got to bed. Loved the alligators.Live it has a theater, gym, and pools. Machines were not loose but overall I enjoyed my ine day stay. I will be back soon. Birthday is creeping in and paragon will be my go 2 place. ❤️❤️

NO. The hotel here sucks. Outdated, dirty, and lousy janitorial service. We get in our room and there is no shampoo, or body wash and one bath towel, hand towel and wash cloth. Someone brought them up later, but that was unacceptable. Then we have to dispose of two large roaches running around the room. The breakfast buffet was a joke. $14 for the same breakfast you get at any chain hotel in the country. This hotel has zero customer service and are only in it for the money. It's trash and a huge waste of money.

stayed at the RV park in the first part of July for the" summer special" that they have running, which is $9.99 a night! but what they failed to tell you is there's" resort fees". And the manager at the RV park is the one that checked me in it was her first day back from vacation and she really didn't wanna be there but what she did was failed to tell me about the extra charges. Which is an additional seven dollars a night whether you use the pools or not you're $9.99 a night ends up being almost $20 with tax and everything everything which still is not bad but they should tell you that when you're checking in with your credit card!!! something I was planning on paying a little almost $30 for for three nights ended up being almost $60 for three nights

It's a fun and clean place! Don't bother if you like anything other than video poker and slots lol. Hotel has alligators 😁

Got in the hot tub and it was cold! Shower in our room was leaking and the shower door kept sliding back open! Body wash container which let me say looks like a nice brand and does smell great was empty! This is not the same paragon it was 10 years ago! It has def gone way down! And prices just keep going up! The buffet food was either over fried or cold I normally don’t leave negative reviews but for the money I’m spending here I expected more!

Frogmore Cotton Plantation & Gins

Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
Farms
This is a fantastic historical site and the staff are extremely knowledgeable and kind. It's been a very, very long time since I visited a place where I learned so much and genuinely wanted to stay longer. If you're at all interested in the history of the area or the economy of cotton and slavery, it's a must.

This was definitely worth the visit. Lynn, the tour guide did an outstanding job. We learned so much and had a lot of fun! The price for tickets is reasonable. The lady that sold us the tickets in the store area was super friendly and helpful. I wish we had more time to visit.

A vital historical stop on a music-history tour. The 19th-century cotton plantation covers some 1,800 acres, and through our friendly, knowledgeable tour guides got a close-up view of what that life during that time was like. The church setting featured lovely singing, the cotton fields were beautiful and hot (random note: don't step on the fire ant hills), and the old cotton gins have been meticulously preserved (and the new technologically superior ones are quite impressive). We saw slave quarters and reveled in the stories of plantation life.

The tour guide, Lynn, & the store clerk, Carolyn, are very nice & knowledgeable. The store & the setting are picture perfect! I recommend a visit, but you may want to call ahead to give them details: your eta, what is of greatest interest to you, & how much time you'll have. The "Then & Now" tour is listed on the website as 1.5 hours, but it could take way longer. I set aside two hours, hoping to tour the old cotton gin, watch the film on modern cotton ginning methods, & drive to the new facility. During our two hours, we browsed around the mercantile until the tour guide was available, toured the old cotton gin (fabulous!) & watched an historical film (30 minutes) detailing the history of the area & past/present owners. After the film, we had to leave & the group walked to the outbuildings in the field. I really don't know when the "Now" part of the tour was going to start. The tour guide offered a sincere apology & complimentary future tour, but we won't be going back in the area. Glad that we toured the cotton gin (such a treasure!), but the historical film & the walk to the outbuildings should be last, optional for those with additional time.

Very interesting place in regard to the history of cotton production, ranging from slavery to industrialization, presented by an excellent, very engaged tour guide. When being around Natchez, a place you must see!

I didn't know what to expect since we've Travelers too many plantations over the years. This is a working plantation and I learned so much about the cotton industry and how it was the lifeblood of the Natchez economy. The owner and other guides have a huge knowledge base and love to share. It was a morning well spent.

Excellent tour! The tour guide was very informative and entertaining. The tour was about an hour and a half in length at the historical site and then directions were given to the new cotton processing facility where you could drive through. Well worth the $20 tour fee!

What can I say! It's all been said in the other reviews. Thank you Shaun for your warm welcome and personal touch in your museum which makes it an outstanding music museum and proves that small can be more than beautiful. Don't forget to hop in with the Arcade next to the museum. (See photo)

Very pleasant visit. The museum hostess was very eager to tell us all about Jerry and the two cousins. Afterwards we visited the arcade next door. Viewed artwork guided by the artist himself. A small but very nice museum to visit.

It's small, but it packs a massive punch. Master of ceremonies Shaun Davis is a music lifer who deftly told the stories around this Ferriday, LA gem. Hometown of cousins Jerry Lee Lewis, Mickey Gilley, Jimmy Lee Swaggart, the museum also features various artifacts of everyone from Fats Domino and James Burton to Pete Fountain, Elvis, Clarence "Frogman" Henry, Percy Sledge, Aaron Neville, Irma Thomas, and Tony Joe White of "Polk Salad Annie" fame. A former post office is a proper monument of where so much of our musical melting pot came from.

Absolutely loved this museum and visit! The ladies were knowledgeable and it was just a great stop! It’s small, but packed with Louisiana music history and info.

Very cool little treasure of a museum !!!

The museum is in the former US Post office in Ferriday, LA. The arcade side was closed. They have memorabilia from multiple blues singers and they show a program. The largest collections are Jerry Lee Lewis, Mickey Gilley and Jimmy Swaggart since they're from the area. The tour guides were nice and knowledgeable. Free entrance - donations welcome. There's a gift shop too.

Quick, free museum if you are passing thru Ferriday and have some interest in Jerry Lee Lewis. Friendly curator in a WPA post office.
