Nature & Parks
Custer State Park, located near Mt Rushmore in the Black Hills, is a vast nature preserve offering stunning scenery, diverse trails, and comfortable resorts amidst abundant wildlife. The park's appeal lies not only in its impressive American wildlife but also in its winding mountain roads and tranquil lakeside getaways. While there is an entry fee to access the park, visitors find it well worth the cost for the unforgettable experiences it offers.
Beautiful landscapes! Really recommend if you want to see wildlife. The park is huge, there’re campings, leisure areas with picnic tables and clean restrooms. It’s all dog friendly, meaning the dogs are welcome on the trails! Driving inside the park is a delight!! The ticket to the park is 25$ and gives you 7 days to explore it.

Absolutely Incredible - Beautiful Area ! There is greater beauty around every turn. I did Not schedule enough time here & will certainly be back. Just Love the Bison/Buffalo & adorable Burro/Mules. Remember to stay Safe! They are Not pets. Enjoy the beauty
Jeannine U — Google review
Custer State Park completely blew me away — it’s truly one of the most beautiful and well-kept parks I’ve ever visited, even compared to many national parks! The scenery is stunning at every turn, from the rolling prairies to the dramatic granite spires and crystal-clear lakes. Driving through the park feels like stepping into a postcard. We saw bison, pronghorns, burros, and deer up close — it was magical. The roads and trails are in great condition, everything is spotless, and it’s so easy to get around. The staff and rangers are friendly and really care about the park, which makes the experience even better. The Visitor Center is excellent and adds so much to the visit — very informative, modern, and beautifully done. Whether you’re into wildlife, photography, or just peaceful scenic drives, Custer State Park is a place you’ll never forget. I can’t wait to come back.

This park is spectacular, the needles was so fun to experience. Loved we came in the fall the colors were pretty. Wildlife loop was hard to find so look for the Bison center, the round up had happened the weekend before so they were all there getting checked. The burrows made my day, they are just past the bison center.
Rita D — Google review
The park was awesome and had amazing views. There is so much to do. We lost count on how many times we said wow! Started on the Needles highway, did the wildlife loop and saw a herd of Buffalo and finished up on Iron Mountain Road. Had a great lunch The Legion Lodge. The potato salad was the best we ever had in a restaurant. Next time will check out the lakes and more of the park.
Patricia B — Google review
Highly highly recommend going to Custer! Plan a few days though, so much to see and do! We lucked out and were there in time for the Annual Buffalo Roundup which was so cool to see,.def do that if you're there at the end of Sept. Other highlights are the Needles Highway, Mt. Coolidge Lookout, Sylvan Lake and the Wildlife Loop! We camped just outside but there looked to be some great camping and lodging in the park too!
Liam M — Google review
Please we know major attraction is bison/ Buffalo which roam freely around however we loved the donkeys burrows mules a the lil ones walk rifht up a want to be petted! Wonderful treat to just hang out an see them one lil ones walk rifht was even nursing ! Enjoy!
Kathleen C — Google review
So much to see and do here. Great park to stay at to keep you within driving distance of multiple POIs and scenic drives. We stayed at the Grace Coolidge Campground which was a smaller loop that had tents and trailers. This loop had electric at most spots and potable water spigot at the bathroom area. When we showed up there was a male bison hanging out at the entrance. Kept our distance, but was enjoyable for the kids to see from a distance. Visitor center has some small kid friendly activities and a 20 minute movie to introduce you to the park. Take the Wildlife Loop. You will see plenty of bison, deer, and pronghorn sheep. Take Iron Mountain scenic road to Mount Rushmore. Stunning views. There are some tunnels that are one car width. Big trucks take caution. Sylvan Lake was a must see. The sunlight striking the water and rock formations was beautiful. There is a few general stores scattered throughout for your food, drink, and souvenir needs.

Such a cute museum of local town history. It’s much bigger than I expected. Each room was themed in their own way and I was like walking through time. A must stop for anyone.

We stopped by just to see what the museum had to offer since relatives lived in the town in 1910. The staff was very friendly and our grandchildren enjoyed the items on hand.

Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort is not your typical campground, as it's considered one of the best near Custer State Park. It offers great amenities such as two pools, a large playground, showers, restrooms, and a snack bar. The location is perfect for visiting attractions like Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, and Custer State Park. The resort provides full hook-up services and a dump station.
Great location, beautiful newer campground. Laundry options were nice, and the showers and restrooms were clean and well kept. Hookups were nice and sites were big enough. There could be a little more room, our dump tube was pretty close to the neighbors fire ring. Not uncommon today. The pool and hot tub were great! I'd definitely stay here again! The camp store was well stocked and had plenty of options. It's also very close to Custer and the options there.
Bryan B — Google review
We had a wonderful stay. We had 25 of us and each family was able to find somewhere to sleep with their own comfort level. Kids loved the playground and pool. We stayed in Calamity Jane log cabin and it was perfect for our family of 4. 10pm “curfew” was very much respected throughout the resort. I highly recommend for big family gatherings.
Jordan D — Google review
We had an incredible stay in the deluxe cabin with our kiddo and dog. The cabin was spacious for our needs however I would caution that the second room upstairs is accessible by a ladder which might be tough to manage for kids under 5/6. We had a great view of the mountains from our balcony and overall relaxed so much during our trip. Probably one of my favorite cabins we stayed in yet. The campground itself is very new, clean, and well-maintained. It is located right on the edge of town so we were able to reach food/grocery within 5 or so minutes and custer state park ~15 minutes. Around the campground, we saw so much staff ensuring it was clean and well-appointed. The pool and hot tub were very clean as well and the playground was very fun for young kids. Nights were quiet and the curfew was very much respected. We can't wait to make our way back.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Our family of three had a fantastic stay at Buffalo Ridge Camp Resort in Cabin 3! The cabin was the perfect size for us and was impressively built—my very picky husband, who builds homes for a living, was thoroughly impressed with the quality. It was stocked with everything we needed. The resort amenities were excellent, with pools, a hot tub, and a pool bar for refreshing drinks. The check in staff were great and very helpful. The grounds were meticulously maintained, providing a peaceful environment to unwind and soak in the great outdoors. We had such a wonderful experience and can't wait to return and try out a treehouse next time. Highly recommended!
Julia G — Google review
We stayed for a week with our camper. Campsites are very nice. Plenty of room for big campers and your vehicle. Fire rings, concrete pads, playground and pool was great. I love that they let people and kids ride motorized atv’s and bikes around. Bathroom/shower rooms and laundry were so CLEAN!!! Washer and dryer each take $2.00 per cycle. Huge bonus, dryers actually dried in one cycle. The only thing that could be better was the customer service at the front desk. We talked to the same lady at the front desk multiple times (check in, getting coins for laundry, and bought ice cream), every single time she was so rude (dismissive attitude, acting like we were annoying her by asking for basic items). Every other employee that we talked to was absolutely wonderful. The women cleaning the bathroom/shower rooms are doing an absolutely fantastic job! We will definitely stay here on our next trip to Custer.
Sara B — Google review
Traveling with our daughter and her family we have two sites side by side near the pool and playground. The view is phenomenal. Staying here midweek and it’s very quiet. Grounds and facilities are impeccable. Staff is friendly. Right next to Custer yet no road noise. We will return!
Marilee H — Google review
Excellent! Heated pool & hot tub were perfect & open after Labor Day. Grounds were well taken care of & RV sites were very nice. Location was perfect for our needs. Saw nothing lacking. Highly recommend.

Best place we have stayed in a 3 month trip around the USA. I would highly recommend for everyone. Lots for kids to do. Great trails to get your steps in, biking just about everywhere or running. Every type of camping or lodging you could want. The whole resort is beautiful. Very well maintained. Everywhere you go is spotless.

Pleasant surprise! Very authentic and interesting. So many buildings and cool things in each. In the store up front huge books of historical information was across the back.. The owner was so sweet and friendly, telling us the story of the place. Highly recommend it, totally worth the $6 entry fee.
Julie P — Google review
I really enjoyed touring around this quiet area. The shop had some very unique antiques, some of which I could imagine is worth a lot. The village itself had some buildings that were really in poor condition like the barbershop but it’s clear they are trying to remodel some of them. It’s a shame a bit that they left a lot of the carriages and other items out in the elements and they probably won’t last long since they aren’t maintained properly. There was nobody else here when we visited on a Sunday afternoon.
Michael O — Google review
I really was excited to see this outdoor, old-west museum, but upon leaving I was extremely disappointed. First, all of the buildings need serious renovations or upkeep. Now I understand they are supposed to "look old" but a little maintenance would go a long way. The woman who checked me in did warn that some of the buildings were not authentic and that's fine, but it seemed only a handful were from an earlier time period. The big disappointment was the condition on the grounds. In a lot of places around the buildings the weeds were knee high. Plus they need to have some kind of path connecting the different "rows" of buildings. You have to walk through the grass, which needed cutting. I did love see the true old buildings. However, I've been to several of these types of museums and this one is the the worst of the bunch, sadly.
Scott M — Google review
What you see here in this historical village are all original buildings and items that used to be part of the daily life of many settlers back in the days of cowboys and Indians.
Steve K — Google review
Great place to visit. You get the old western town feel and a little history about the area. I recommend stopping if you are in the area. The lady that the entrance was so friendly and inviting. I was in town for Operation Black Hills Cabin. Thank you Four Mile Old West Town for supporting Operation Black Hills Cabin and for supporting wounded veterans. You are a true Patriot!
Matthew S — Google review
I enjoyed this experience alot and me and my family met the lady who I believed owned it and she was extremely nice and some very interesting story's. The town itself was fascinating especially because it is the site of an actual ghost town. If you enjoy ghost towns you will find this interesting.
Benjamin L — Google review
We had so much fun wandering this "town"! The proprietors are insanely nice and we would recommend going!!! Some of our favorite buildings were the butcher shop and the sweet shop that showed so many old items. The church was amazing as well! If you love old furniture and history, then this place is for you!! They have about 80 buildings and we spent at least an hour and a half looking and reading the informational signs!

We met the owner and her daughter. They were very informative and very pleasant to talk to. I'd love to come back and visit with them again.

Crazy Horse Memorial

Mentioned on

Monument
Sights & Landmarks
The Crazy Horse Memorial is a massive mountain carving and Native American museum located in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. The project was initiated in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski at the request of Lakota chief Standing Bear to showcase the strength of Native American culture. Today, Ziolkowski's family and supporters continue his work, inviting visitors to celebrate the legacy of Crazy Horse and explore Native American culture.
Great experience at the Crazy Horse Memorial! It was $12 per person to get in and then $5 per person if you choose to take the bus ride - so $34 for my husband and I to have an amazing afternoon of getting educated about this incredible undertaking. We truly enjoyed watching thorough videos of the history of the artist and his agreements with the Lakota tribe to make this dream a reality. There are so many spaces to explore, and we even were able to take home a rock from some of the mountain for our grandson. The memorial is breathtaking, even though they haven’t completed the project yet. It’s an absolute Marvel to behold. 5-star experience ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
Dar R — Google review
Has a great museum and the process is for Crazy Horse seems forever tell it's finished. I've been going since I was a kid I thought they might of been close to finishing. Awesome site, would like to try the bus tour that goes up close to face area.
Jace E — Google review
This place was phenomenal. I was only expecting to go look at the monument and then leave, but with it being the largest Native American Museum in the North America, there was so much more to it. We watched a presentation, looked at many many artifacts, read about different people and tribes, and then watched several dances with singing and music and even participated in a Native American circle dance at the end. It was such a great experience and we are so so glad we went and didn't just take pictures from the road.
Shannon M — Google review
We visited Crazy Horse Memorial on a beautiful morning, arriving right at 09:00. The weather was perfect, which made the whole experience even better. After a warm welcome, we started with the short film that explains the history and the incredible vision behind the monument. The museum was impressive, with fascinating Native American artifacts and stories. We browsed the large gift shop before heading outside to take in the view of the massive carving in progress. There’s a huge car park, and for $5 extra you can take a bus ride closer to the statue. Our group of four paid $35 total for entrance, and for those who want the ultimate experience, there’s also a $125 minibus tour to the top. We stayed until 10:45 — just a short visit this time, as there’s so much more to see and do here. Next time, we’ll definitely allow more hours to explore in depth.
Traveller T — Google review
Absolutely amazing. The artifacts, the information. I just regret that I didn't have time to see it all. I was on a bus tour. You can easily spend 3 hours there. And the Crazy Horse monument - they have been working on for 75 years and more to go. Absolutely stunning!
Petra C — Google review
This is a must stop on your western South Dakota vacation!! It’s going to be HUGE when it gets finished. I am really hoping it’ll be done in my lifetime so I can go back and see it. It’s impressive they are funding the project by themselves and receive no help from the government. Not many people would turn down 10 million dollars twice. The stories told were incredible. The museum is beautiful! Going the bus tour. It’s $5/person. No one was at the counter when we got there. It’s a one man show. He gives the tours as well as collects the money. So just stay put to get your spot in line. It does fill up. We also got a rock to take home from the monument. My kids loved that.
Jill H — Google review
It's amazing the work being done on the monument. There is tons of history. They have a snack area, restaurant, and a gift shop. If you want to take a bus up to the monument it's an additional $5.
Marcella W — Google review
Very educational. The museum part shows how modern day culture was woven into the native American culture as well. The dancers were awesome! The video clip is a must see as it explains so much to really be able to follow along. There is a place to eat and lots of great angles to see the memorial.

Whether it's your first time flying or you're a seasoned pilot, seeing the Black Hills from this perspective is truly breathtaking.
Fantastic up & close encounter with some of the best views of the Black Hills. Bryce our pilot was very informative & friendly as were the ground staff. So cool to see Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Black Elk Peak & lake Sylvan by air. Well worth doing as
Sarah M — Google review
This is an excellent way to see all the highlights of the area. Dave was a great pilot, knowledgeable and friendly. The check-in staff were also friendly and helpful. We did the #5 Southern Hills Panorama and it was worth every penny!
Jeanneine M — Google review
Absolutely had a great time. Our pilot was very knowledgeable and very easy to talk to. This is by far the best way to see Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. This was my husband and my first time on a helicopter tour and we will never forget it.
Krystal W — Google review
We went on the full tour and included the GoPro video of the entire 22 minute flight. Receiving an SD card of our journey to take home. The whole experience was so enjoyable and the scenery was breath taking! Staff are very friendly. Before you board you are briefed on safety procedure. How to enter the helicopter, when to put on your headset, to how and when you exit the helicopter upon completing your journey. The pilot clearly explains what to expect once in the air and when he’s about to bank to the side a bit as you change angles and direction. Answering any questions you may have. Washroom available at the center. Souvenirs and T-shirts available too. Sign the guest book before you leave. We highly recommend Black Hills Aerial Adventures. Tell them Barb and Richard Cecil sent you!

First helicopter ride-did it for my husband. Was a great experience Billy was very reassuring that I would be able to do the flight even though I’m afraid of heights. He even watched our parrot so we could go! Jordan was an experienced pilot and we were very much at ease. Jordan explained and pointed out all the sights. Would definitely recommend this adventure for everyone, even this novice enjoyed the experience. Thank you!!

We just had our wedding here at High Country Guest Ranch on October 12th, 2025 and it was absolutely amazing!! We 100% recommend having your wedding here or family reunion or whatever the occasion may be!! Tina and Bob who manage the ranch and the other employees are so friendly and they went above and beyond for us!! They saved us several times when we had stuff go wrong! They helped out wherever they could. We are so thankful that we chose to have our wedding ceremony and reception here! We stayed in the cabins and so did a lot of our family and friends! The scenery was so beautiful! Waking up and seeing the sun rising over the hills and trees! Breathtaking! My husband and I have already decided that we will definitely be going back to stay at the cabins for many years to come! If you want to have a gorgeous wedding, I highly recommend going here!!💛

Stayed at the Red Barn Cabin, 3 couples altogether. Cleanliness ok, no hand towels for kitchen or bathrooms, no nightstands in upstairs bedrooms with limited space around beds. No bath rug/mat. Brand new swimming pool with chair lift. Fire ring available, gas grill, picnic table, and enough chairs for 4 people for inside and outside dining, hot tub didn't work which was a main reason for selecting this place, especially riding the trails on our utv's. Internet, cell service, satellite can get spotty. Newer ownership looks to be making improvements. Access to utv trail maybe 1/4 mile away. If 1st trip to area with a utv/atv/orv, good place to stay to become familiar with area. General store has some food and snacks along with beer and wine. Place to park trailers. It is a working dude(ette) ranch which offers horse trail rides; horse pastures center of ranch, lived seeing them every day. Dirt road and parking lot. Can rent utv's here, seemed reasonable, especially considering you need to purchase 2 permits - one for Black Hills Forest $25 (can get at gas station 4 miles away) and another one for the roads $50 for being out of state - prepare and get ahead of time if possible otherwise we went to 3 county treasurer offices to get permit (Custer sold out on a Monday, Rapid City was 3 hour wait, Sturgis was success, but bring your social security card to get permit - the lady we spoke to for the state never mentioned this, will also need driver's license and proof of insurance which works for proof of ownership if in your name. Overall a good experience altogether and would recommend.

Direct TV didn't work the 4 days we were there. Something with their account. The coffee had mold and dried coffee in it. The roy Roger's cabin was nice comfortable beds. They have a nice pool and the location is great to access alot of activities.

The stay at High Country Guest Ranch was truly beautiful! The rustic and peaceful ambiance of the ranch were charming upon arrival. The home was clean and inviting, with comfortable furnishings and thoughtful details throughout. We stayed in #30 and the hotel tub was so relaxing in the evenings and enjoying the views of the surrounding landscape was especially enjoyable. Exploring the property was a fantastic experience, providing fresh air and a feeling of complete relaxation and refreshment. We also had a pool table in the basement. The kids enjoyed visiting the animals they had, goats, donkeys and ponies. The horses as well, my nieces enjoyed a wonderful trail ride! The hosts were friendly and helpful, ensuring a great and stay. I had left a very special item in the cabin and they were kind a helpful and mailed it to us. THANK YOU! High Country Guest Ranch is highly recommended for anyone seeking a tranquil and authentic ranch experience, especially for a wedding or reunion that is their specialty.

All staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and went out of their way to make sure our trip was the best, from the lodge, to the trail rides, to the UTV rentals! Very nice atmosphere and we loved feeding the pig, goats, donkeys, and ponies. Rooms clean and beds comfortable, well-appointed accommodations and amenities including hot tubs for most rooms and nice pool, only 4 miles from Hill City but felt secluded, serene.

Jewel Cave National Monument

Nature & Parks
Jewel Cave National Monument is a historic site that features over 170 miles of trails, lantern tours, and opportunities to view wildlife. Visitors can explore the fascinating cave system with its colorful walls and unique formations. However, due to the ongoing elevator renovation, only two tours are currently available: Discovery tour and Lantern tour. Despite this limitation, visitors have praised the ranger guide for their extensive knowledge about the cave during these tours.
Most of our party did the scenic tour and loved it. Of the 700 plus stairs, they indicated the majority were down and it wasn't as strenuous as expected. The guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. The remaining 2 of our party did the discovery tour. One was 7 months pregnant, the other an overweight senior. The tour was enjoyable with a great guide. We left feeling satisfied with our cave experience. No regrets. Overall Jewel Cave was the highlight of our South Dakota trip!
Sheryl S — Google review
Stunning in the simplest sense of the word. I could have stayed down there for hours. Our Ranger was knowledgeable and full of stories. The discovery tour (30 minutes for 14 dollars) was what we chose to do as we were somewhat limited on time. It was an amazing experience however next time I would do a longer tour. Note that the longer tour that descends 750 stairs does NOT require you to walk back up said stairs, there is an elevator to the lower level as well. The visitors center is small yet adequate in display the history of jewel cave.

Jewel Cave is now one of our favorite caves in the U. S. We took the Scenic Tour and were just blown away by the experience. The Ranger/ tour guide was fabulous and really took the time to make sure the visitors got to see and experience the cave features. The tour group was relatively small, with under 20 people, allowing everyone to see and hear the guide. The tour was about 1 hour and 20 minutes long, with a lot of stairs and walking. We suggest arriving at least an hour early so that you have time to watch the movie and see the exhibits before your tour starts. If not, you can do these things after the tour. There are also a couple of hikes you can take in the park. We bought our tickets almost two months in advance as the tours frequently sell out in advance. The parking lot is pretty large and will accommodate RVs and trailers.

I love caves. I’ve been to many caves. This one is a “dry cave”. Without water leaching through, there are very few formations. The “scenic” tour consists of many stairs to enter a few large cavities. The walls are covered in “jewels” but what you see are mostly bumpy side walls since the beauty is hidden under layers of dirt. Others said they already had been on the “lantern” tour first. It was so good they did this tour as a second chance to see the caves. Maybe take the “lantern” tour if you want to be amazed
Shelley A — Google review
We really liked this tour. The Rangers were really cool and made the tour really enjoyable. When comparing the caves, this one has more interesting things to look at than Wind Cave. The Scenic Tour was 740 steps, but we never felt winded or tires from the walk. They places stopping points throughout to rest. They refinished the steps recently and they are very sterdy with lots of hand rails. It was a great tour!
Murphys O — Google review
We chose to do the one hour, twenty minutes guided tour of this National Park Service site. Fascinating history and absolutely stunning formations, colors and textures inside the cave. Our guide was knowledgeable, interesting and kept us engaged throughout the tour. A must see!
Gregory S — Google review
Showed up late a day to gather info and a ranger gave us all the info we needed - including wonderful recommendations outside the cave locally as well. When online tickets are booked, you show up in person at 8a to get tickets at the booth by the parking lot - first come first serve. We arrived early the next day (745a) and got tickets for a 920a scenic route. A different ranger did an intro and he was a bit abrasive and annoying, but other than that all staff were friendly and helpful. Visitor center has shop, an exhibit, and rally point for cave tour. The ranger assigned for our tour was very funny, lighthearted and overall he was a great guide. The cave itself is really cool - I won't rehash the website but lots of formations and they go at a good pace. Ive had knee surgery and was able to do the scenic route well - stairways have double rails, and there are stops with benches.
H — Google review
We did the 1.5 hour scenic tour. It was fun, not too hard, and despite the fact that I have claustrophobia, I felt fine for the entire trip. Our guide was very good, and the paths were well-lit.

Every time I stop in Rochford I make sure I stop at this small store that is loaded with lots of goods, if you get the chance do stop in and look for hand craft gifts or food even cup of coffee. The Lady's are very friendly.

I come here at least 2-3 times a year and it is a great shop. The food is great and the service is wonderful.

OMG people, go here!!! The owner is the sweetest thing and her store is fantastic! It has modern conveniences with the look and vibe of a long forgotten general store. Seriously, please go here! She is a local owner and people try to keep buying her out to make more junk and bulldoze the wonderfulness that is Rochford! Hopefully buying from her will keep her in business!!

Really nice little shop with a wide variety of items. Great place to stop in for a snack and a bottle of coke. It’s just a short walk from the Mickelson trail head in Rochford.

Wonderful little shop to stop and grab an ice cream on your way along the Mickelson Trail. Plenty of food/drink options, cold beers, and trinkets. Lady working there was very nice and we had a good conversation. This is the oasis.

As another reviewer said, “this is the oasis”!!! Loved it. Felt unfriendly vibes at the Saloon first, then came here and felt welcomed. Good food and clean restrooms too. Run by some lovely ladies

Quaint little store, off the beaten path. Not actually a mall, just a little country store with typical store items, plus items those on the Michelson trail might need. Great stop, worth the drive.

What a cool little bar/pub in Rochford! The young lady behind the bar was sweet and friendly and the patrons were all in great spirits. Lots of character here, outside seating area was great too, neat place, don't miss it if you're nearby!

I took a wrong turn on my motorcycle riding back roads on my way the Sundance, Wyoming. After riding about 10 miles of gravel roads I came across a cross roads where the bar and grill was. They were very friendly and helpful getting me back on route. I had lunch while I was there which was just average. They had an amazing selection of soft drinks to choose from. Almost like a soft drink bar. The decor was exciting and kept you engaged the entire time. They still use a wood burning barrel heater in the winter which I loved to see.
Scott S — Google review
Oh my gosh! We found this little gem when we got lost today while riding our touring motorcycles. You feel right at home from the minute you walk up on the porch! Everyone is friendly and the appetizers were great. There is an added extra next door, The Happy Dog Cafe for ice cream and gifts. If we make it back to SD this will be a must on our list to stop at again! 😁 (It sits right along side the road, you cannot miss it.)

Stopped in for lunch during Sturgis 2025. The food was excellent, the way cheeseburgers are meant to be, the atmosphere was perfect and the servers were attentive, quick and friendly. You've got to put this place on your bucket list.

Moonshine Gulch Saloon is a great destination to stop for lunch or just enjoy the atmosphere! We stopped in at Moonshine Gulch Saloon while out trail riding. It's an enjoyable old saloon worth stopping at. There's plenty to look at on the walls and hanging from the ceiling. The food was decent and although fairly busy the service was great. I would recommend Moonshine Gulch Saloon to anyone traveling through the area looking for an old saloon with a lot of charisma!

Rochford a small town in the black hills with a general store and the Moonshine Gulch saloon In this place has lots of character with country charm. The food has the upmost goodness. I was planning to ask for dessert but the place filled up and more folks waiting outside the Mooshine, thought it be polite to give up my seat for the next person that is hungry also. Mount Moriah Cemetery

Cemetery
Sights & Landmarks
Mount Moriah Cemetery is a historic site located in Deadwood, South Dakota. It is the final resting place of notable figures from the Old West, including Wild Bill Hickok. The cemetery is situated in an area that offers various attractions and activities such as the Days of '76 Museum, Adams House, and other nearby landmarks like Mount Rushmore Memorial. Visitors can also explore the scenic routes and trails in the Black Hills region, making it an ideal destination for history enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike.
We visited Mount Moriah Cemetery in the early spring so these pictures don't show much green. It is an interesting testament on how people lived and died. They continued to use the cemetery at least through the 1960s. Admission is so reasonable and the provided map makes it easy to navigate the cemetery. Keep in mind that this cemetery is at the top of a mountain, so there are some ups and downs that you'll be walking. You can also get a wonderful bird's-eye view of the town of Deadwood from an Overlook in the cemetery. I'd plan 30 minutes to explore this testament to history.
Kelly R — Google review
We started down in Deadwood went up the many steps to get to this cemetery. I will be honest with you next time I will drive to the top. Once we got to the cemetery, we still had to continue going upward to see all the graves. From Wild Bill to Calamity Jane worth seeing. One of the most disturbing things is noticing how many young children died either birth or a few days afterwards or even a month or two. Please don’t be one of those people to put the rocks on top of the grave because it damages the headstones.
JEFFERY C — Google review
We thought the Mount Moriah Cemetery is one of the most beautiful we have seen. The cemetery is loaded with notable people from the Deadwood area. Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane and Seth Bullock are just a few. Near the top there is a great overview of the town.
Louis E — Google review
Loved it. The walk up to Seth Bullock and wife's grave is pretty intense, it's up hill and required some rest stops. Saw deer romping around.
Bernadette L — Google review
During our recent visit to Deadwood, South Dakota, we visited the Mount Moriah Cemetery where Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane are buried. We parked our car in the parking lot, paid our $3, then walked (uphill) about 200 yards on a paved road. At one point, we had to move off the road into the grass because a tour bus was leaving the cemetery. The graves of Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane are marked with signs so they can be easily found. This cemetery is located on a fairly steep hill, so it doesn't lend itself to wandering around for very long.
Becky B — Google review
Mount Moriah Cemetary is a worthy stop while visiting Deadwood. Western and history fans will find a number of intetesting graves, including Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. However, there are other interesting sites, including a children's section and a Chinese burner. There is a small $2 fee to get in, but it is worth the small fee as the cemetary is maintained in very good condition. You also get a map with suggestions for a self guided walking tour. Parking can be difficult to find, although you can usually find a spot in the small osrking area or on one of the residential streets. We don't suggest trying to bring you RV or trailer as the cemetary is at the top of a hill in a residential area.
Dawn J — Google review
Very well kept with interesting historical information about the famous “residents” and the communities with special sections in the cemetery (Jewish, Chinese). Nice hikes from the cemetery to the summit too.

Adams House is a historic home in Deadwood, South Dakota that belonged to W. E. Adams, a prominent figure in the city's history. The house, built in 1892, now serves as a museum showcasing original furnishings and personal items of the Adams family. Visitors can explore different decades of Deadwood's history and learn about its upper class society at the time.
Well worth the stop. The house is gorgeous. Very well preserved and a wonderful insight into some of the past in Deadwood. The guide was fantastic. On a very strange twist of fate we were at the Mount Moriah cemetery before this and just happened to stumble upon the gravesite of the prior owner without even knowing it until we were there. I would definitely recommend checking the place out.

Very cool museum. The tour guides provide lots of information, but they do have strict rules no touching anything, no standing on the antique rugs, no standing on the tile by the fireplace, no using flash, and no sitting on the furniture. They are very strict about these rules and will not hesitate to yell at you. You must stay with your tour group and keep moving. Other than that our guide shared lots of information, answered every question, and was very detailed. The house was incredible. I highly recommend the Adams House—just follow the rules, as you should always do anyway.

Historic Walking Areas
Historic Downtown Deadwood holds a notorious past, having been founded illegally on Lakota land during the gold rush. Despite many original buildings being destroyed in a fire, the area has been recreated to offer an authentic experience of the town's aesthetic. Visitors can explore markers signifying original building locations and immerse themselves in the Wild West atmosphere where famous figures like Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok once roamed.
This place is amazing. Such rich history ( overlook all the gambling if that’s not your thing- it’s not mine) take your time to visit Mount Moriah Cemetery where Calamity Jane and Hickok is buried but follow the map around the whole place. You feel like you have stepped back in time. A true immersive experience.

This was an amazing experience. Such a great blend of history, adult party/gambling atmosphere, while also being a clean friendly place id be happy to take my young kids. The shootouts and storytelling by the deadwood alive crews were amazing. I love how they get the kids involved. I cant wait to come back!

We visited downtown for the afternoon. We walked around and enjoyed all the stores they had to offer. Plenty of gifts and souvenirs to go around. We ate lunch and just enjoyed the scenery. Its a small town filled with great history. On our way out the next morning, we drove by 6 am when Noone was on the streets, it was pretty cool to see it filled with people one day and rhe next early morning empty. we parked in the public parking lot by visitor center and walked downtown.

We really enjoyed Historic Downtown Deadwood. The atmosphere is great with a really old west feel. People who operate the business are really friendly and there is a ton of things to see and do. We spent two days and really did not have time to see a lot of things.

Lots of cool wild West History involving Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. It's a little sad to see so many of the hotels full of slots, but there is rich history and cool little shops to enjoy. We were there during their Deadweird event, and while we aren't the partying kind it was fun to see everyone dressed up in costumes and enjoying themselves. We stayed at the historic Bullock Hotel which exceeded our wildest expectations.

Located in the heart of Deadwood, South Dakota, the Adams Museum is a joint venture that combines a Black Hills history museum with the 1892 home of one of Deadwood's founders. Founded in 1930 by W.E. Adams, it offers visitors an opportunity to explore real-life artifacts from the Old West and learn about historical details through Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane memorabilia.
Absolutely one of my favorite museums ever! Purpose built in 1932 it has a fascinating tour of local History and personalities. Open year around and across the street from the newly renovated Landmark Hotel.

If you're in deadwood, definitely give this place a look! It's pay by donation, and it's suggested $5 per person. It has three levels of historical items, facts and exhibits. It doesn't take too long to walk through the whole place- but there's definitely a lot to see! They even have an area downstairs for kids which is nice. The two ladies working at the front were super nice and knowledgeable.

Stopped by the Adams Museum in Deadwood — mighty fine stop if you’re lookin’ to chew on some real Wild West history. Lots of good yarns from them rough ‘n tumble days. Learned a heap, tipped my hat, and felt right at home among the ghosts of them old trailblazers.

Jen was phenomenal! Knowledgeable about the wildlife (particularly birds) and geology of the area. The historical displays range from the foundation of the town through the 20th century.
Jeremy S — Google review
This museum was a great way to learn the history of the town and the expansion and correction that occurred over the years due to the gold rush. There's a recommended $3 donation for adults to enter, but the museum is worth more than that. It's a self-guided tour with lots of information and cool historical objects on display. You could easily spend an hour and a half in here leaning into the history and the culture of the area. It's within walking distance of historic Deadwood Main Street. There is a small gift shop that offers mostly souvenirs for kids with a few options that cater to adults.
Heather J — Google review
This place has quite a bit of displays to it. There are 3 floors - the upstairs, main floor, and basement. The basement has a lot of interactive exhibits, especially fun for kids. From upstairs, you can overlook the main floor. There is also a small gift shop.

A true landmark in a city full of Old West legends! Hosted by the incredibly beautiful & lovely Rose the museum combines the charms of a small town history legend coupled to the stories of the region that give us the myth and the truth of this legendary town. Whether you want the low down on potato Creek Johnny and his legendary nugget or view Native American artifacts you're sure to find many treasures besides Rose's well informed tutelage that led our group's grasp of the intuitive & straight forward manner of its history lessons.

Cool little tour with great history information given during the tour. Our tour guide Hudson was awesome! He was funny and witty and made the tour fun. Totally worth it!

The tour was quite the eye opener. Back in those days conditions were brutal for miners. The tour guide was thorough with descriptions and answered everyone’s questions clearly and included some funny humor. Visitors are permitted to take any loose stones from the ground in the tunnel home with them. You can also take photos and video of the tour. My video length was just over 30 minutes long. Helmets are provided. I would recommend you take the tour when you visit Deadwood. Children enjoy it too!

This was awesomeee! We were toured by abby (super cool btw). She made awesome jokes and gave super detailed facts and overall made the whole experience really interesting. Enjoyed our tour, the young blonde girl (apologies i cant remember the name) was very good at explaining what happened all these years ago. Amazing the conditions the mined in and how much volume they actually took out of the mine. Also lovely and cool on a hot day. This is why we come to South Dakota. The views and scenery are breathtaking. It is such an amazing place, and we appreciate the locals putting up with us during the Rally. Lovely little lodge nestled in a gorgeous canyon at the end of a beautiful, winding 15 mile scenic drive. Lobby is beautiful with a large stone fireplace and the inevitable deer/elk/bison heads adorning the room. Staff bordered on apathetic and weren't very engaging. Rooms were a little dated, trying to get luggage trolley over the back door sill was nearly impossible and the two doors leading to the parking lot were so heavy it took both of us pushing to get them opened. The views are stunning and we saw lots of wildlife during our stay as well as several doable hikes to see the waterfalls near the lodge. Would recommend.

Beautiful drive w place to stop. Water runs mainly on the left side (if coming from Spearfish). If first time nice to go both directions so the driver can see it all easier. I like looking out through the sun/moon roof. Great for nature lovers. Dog friendly though not everything is grassy (dirt/mud when you get out) - bring a towel or wipes if you want to keep them clean.

The D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery & Archives, nestled in Spearfish, South Dakota, is a beloved family destination offering an array of activities. Visitors can enjoy feeding the fish and ducks while exploring the hatchery's museum and old train car used for fish transportation. The beautiful surroundings also provide opportunities for hiking and even hosting outdoor events like weddings in the rose garden. Managed by the Booth Society, this unique attraction offers educational programs and community events supported by donations and City subsidy funding.
Great great experience. The volunteers were so kind and went above and beyond to explain things and give impromptu tours. Free. You can visit a house and go on the train they used to move the baby fish (fingerlings) on. You can also buy fish feed for a dollar and feed them. Well maintained grounds. Parking is at the park north past the site and you'll walk over a bridge to the site.

Very interesting! The rail car that hauled fish was beautiful as well as the Booth house. Feeding the fish was a hoot! The underwater viewing area was cool.Great place to stop that's free. It takes about an hour to tour.

I love this place! Its great family entertainment and its free! Its one of the oldest fish hatcheries in the west. Its not very big, but its right next to city park so you can easily spend half a day in the area. There is a little gift shop and inside is an elevator. You can take the elevator down to an underwater viewing area of the fish if you have a stroller, or if not there are two sets of stairs. The underwater viewing area is definitely the best part of this place! There are so many large fish, and if you're little ones like fish they will love this! My son could easily spend all day here! You can buy fish food and feed the fish, which is so fun! They'll jump out of the water and swarm to get their food! Its so much fun for kids to feed and watch. There is an old train car that was used to move fish on the railway, which is very cool. There is also a museum but its closed for work. There is not RV parking available here, but not even half a mile up the road is a RV campground

I've been wanting to ride up to the Cement Ridge Lookout for the last 3 yrs. I finally got it done on 06/27/24 on an Adventure bike. All but the last 1/4 mile was very doable. That last 1/4 mile was filled with medium sized rocks and holes. The road was dry but would be challenging if it was raining or the road was muddy. I wouldn't drive that in my Chevy Equinox. Only a truck or high clearance 4x4. Once there, the 360° view was absolutely spectacular. Well worth the trip up there. The Forest Service employee, who was on duty in the fire watch tower, took time to answer my questions .

The road has become almost impossible for anything under a truck. So disappointing. This used to be our go-to place in the evenings. What happened to pride in our area? Do better Crook/Wyoming road & bridge.
Zany — Google review
The views were spectacular! I would encourage you to go here only if you are in an ATV, UTV or a higher clearance 4 wheel drive. Watch for free roaming cows.

Breathtaking views of the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. Several interpretive signs about the tower and surrounding areas.. Picnic tables and restroom are a great feature.

Great view of the black hills. Did this in a CX-5. There are some ruts abour 2-3ft deep, pick a good line and you're good. I'd rate it Priusable.

Great drive up to the lookout and a spectacular view when you arrive

Beautiful lookout. 360 degree views of northern BH area. This one you can do with a street vehicle; just be careful. We did it in an SUV. These fire lookouts throughout the BH are so cool to visit. Most are locked, but you still have a beautiful view.

This site is one of the possible many areas where native people would use to hunt for Buffalo and possibly other large animals. Very unique site. Lots of information is posted all around this site. It's on the north side of I-90, right if the frontage road.

We were driving by and decided to stop in for a quick tour. Josh, our guide, was a very smart young man and walked us through the site. We really enjoyed learning about the history of Vore buffalo jump and recommend to all ages!

🤍 Jackie was such an amazing tour guide! She was EXTREMELY knowledgeable and fun to listen to! We loved hearing all her knowledge, the history on this site, we discussed theories and thoughts 💭 📝 These pics don’t do the tour Justice. Hearing them give you the full history in person is where it’s at! It’s worth it! 🦬 Seeing the butcher site in person is a really cool experience. Definitely stop in and check it out. Their gift shop is full of things to choose from. This site is truly incredible to see and hear about the history dating back umteen thousand years ago!

We were happy to make this stop from Deadwood on our way to Devils tower. We were not aware of the history here it's a small location but awesome to see the gentleman that gave us a tour is the owner he has a lot of history here small museum and we were able to enter the area's of the actual diggs for bison fossils. Amazing stories here. To get to the fossil u have to be able to walk down to the location just an ( fyi ) in case of mobility difficulties .
Connie J — Google review
Well worth the detour off the highway. Dedicated bunch of volunteers who offered so much information. Asked for a small donation when we said we could not stay for the whole tour down j to the site (45 minutes). But she took us out to the sink hole and explained how the. Native Americans had used the site to hunt bison.
Alexandra M — Google review
We stopped in on our way through the area, Josh our tour guide was very knowledgeable and informative. This place is rich with Native American history. An absolute must see if you have an interest in Native American history. Don't just drive by, stop in a learn a few new things. Thank you Josh for being our tour guide today. You really would make an amazing Park Ranger.
Meradeth H — Google review
Anatoly was a great tour guide. This was our second time to Vore Buffalo Jump, and it is a gem! Highly interactive, great for teens and adults. Requires some walking down and up hill, but the paths are paved, and almost all of it is wheelchair accessible. Highly recommended to anyone in the Black Hills/Devils Tower area.
Christine M — Google review
They offer different tour options, from self-guided to guided. The guided is $9/person and well worth it. Our guide was a local, history majoring student from the university and did a great job with the tour. The tour includes three parts. First, you look at the hole from above and learn about the technique. Next, you go into the tipi museum to see maps and learn more about the tribes and the process. Finally, you head down to the dig site, which was my favorite part. Here you see lots of the bones and other artifacts, as well as learn more about how all the things the bison were used for. This place was definitely worth the nine dollars and was an interesting leg stretch during a long car trip. The whole guided tour takes 30-45 minutes depending on how many questions you ask. Beware: going to the bottom of the sink hole must be done by foot. There is a paved trail going down, but it is steep and I imagine it would be quite difficult to get a wheelchair up and down it safely.

Very awesome to see the fantastic petrified wood specimen they have!! And the information boards were informative and interesting!! I came just around the closing time, but I did say hello to the sweet gal as she left!! She apologized and I told her of course I completely understand, no worries whatsoever, definitely go home and be with family!! She was very sweet!! ❤️‍🩹 I wandered around a while reading placards and that was my own fault that it was time for her to head home when I finally walzed up to the door anyway!! Haha!! But the restroom area remains open, and it is stocked with flyers/information/tourist mags, and WY maps!! All I really wanted was a WY map anyways!! It was definitely a great surprise to see the petrified wood and the bronze wildlife sculptures though!! There is a cougar/puma out front, and I didn't catch the artist, but it was fantastic!! And, the fawns near the door are so lovely too!! They even tricked my dog for a moment and he was not sure if they were going to run away from him!! Hahaha! (Not saying he's the #1 brightest fella all the time 😆 he's still, pretty much just a dog-brain!! Hahaha!!) It was quite funny though!!

This is a very nice Welcome Center and a nice place to stop and stretch your legs. It had a large parking area, that was very clean and well maintained and easy access. I stopped by the historic general store in Aladin, and it was like stepping into a different era. This charming store has been around for ages, proudly holding the title of the oldest general store in the area. As I walked in, I was greeted by the nostalgic feel of the original old post office, which has been preserved and still operates today. The store is a treasure trove of essentials and surprises. From bullets for your firearm to snacks, drinks, and everyday necessities, they've got everything you might need in this tiny town of just 15 residents. The store's role extends beyond just shopping – it's a gathering place where locals and visitors can connect. The on-site bar is the perfect spot to grab a refreshing drink and take a break. The friendly staff and old-school ambiance make it a unique experience that's worth stopping for. Whether you're passing through or a local, this general store is a must-visit for its history, charm, and sense of community. *Tips:* - Stop by the post office for a unique mailing experience - Explore the aisles for some unexpected finds - Grab a drink at the bar and chat with the locals *Recommended for:* History buffs, those looking for a unique experience, and anyone passing through Aladin

Rustic stop while at 2025 Sturgis Rally. Cold beer, good food and lots of bikers. Store is a pretty neat stop with lots of touristy stuff. Many humorous t-shirts and nickknacks, key chains, magnets, rocks, and so on. Expect tourist prices. Was a fun place to get off the bike and rest a while before getting back on the road. Will be back again next year!

Long live places like this. I grew up going to stores like this in Virginia and sadly most are gone now. Thanks to Walmarts and dollar stores they are fading memories. This place is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. If you still have an old country store near where you live, support them and keep the small businesses in business!

On our way to Devils Tower we stopped at this little store in Aladdin. There was a population sign right next to the store that said Pop 13. Our family vacation group suddenly realized we had doubled the size of the town just by showing up. What fun. There were snacks and friendly people inside the store, cold drinks and a significant number of souvenirs to choose from. All in all it was a positive stop, but we wouldn't have gotten gas at the pump because at that time it looked like original equipment.

A total gem in this town—there was so much to see and lots of info available on the many artifacts. I was on the fence about bringing our kids (7 & 10) inside, but they had a very entertaining dress up chest for the kids to try on period clothing, a saddle they could sit on, and a “dig” table where they found really cool hidden items. Well-organized and 100% worth the stop. Check out the gift shop in the lower level!

A Must-See when traveling through Sundance, WY. The museum has an amazing collection and the downstairs gift shop has some beautiful items.

After our visit to Sundance, we love this small town. And the museum in the old school building is wonderfully equipped and furnished. The highlight is the courtroom where the Sundance Kid was sentenced. Don't forget to visit the art and museum shop in the basement. Once again, many thanks to the lovely staff and the museum director, who gave us a personal tour. We will definitely be back, and send our best regards from Germany to Sundance.

What an amazing museum! A lovingly assembled collection of artifacts from the area has been turned into a storyline that describes what was life like here. Even the building itself is a 100+ years old school building that was state of the art when it was built, and still looks quite impressive on the outside as well as on the inside. Even the courthouse furniture has been preserved and arranged to show the layout of the courtroom of the times long past. Highly recommended to stop and enjoy.
Michael — Google review
Awesome museum. The staff was helpful and informative, knew a lot about the history and local area. This place was filled to the brim, and much larger than you would think going in. You could spend about an hour here if you took your time. The majority of the pieces were donated by local pioneer families, which just adds to the authenticity. The museum will soon move to the schoolhouse on the side street by sometime around february. Great spot.

Keyhole State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Lakeside area for fishing, birdwatching & camping, plus a full-service marina with a general store.
Was very well kept and clean, aside from one of the bathrooms running out of paper, says my old lady. Tent camp sites are a little walk downhill if your at tatanka sites, but your camping so get over it! Lake is quite in the mornings and afternoons with respectable boaters to lake fishing.
Evan M — Google review
Great state park! Clean & well-maintained in a beautiful area. Staff could do a better check of camping cabins as they were a bit dirty but overall a great trip.
Anna — Google review
We spent a few hours at Keyhole State Park, looking for a good place to hike. We hiked around the lake via the Beach Trail and then drove up the road to hike the Little Keyhole Trail over and near the dam. These were both short trails, but made for a nice afternoon excursion.

Visit August 2021, Cabin 1: Beautiful campground with amazing views of the reservoir all around. Very quiet with minimal human or animal noises. It was a bit of a drive (too far to walk) to the showers but very clean and in the open. There was an outhouse nearby that we could use throughout the day. IMPORTANT NOTE: Showers were coin operated. Bring quarters or cash for exchange machine. We stayed in a cabin on the shoreline. Very peaceful and the perfect location to look out at the water or walk the shoreline. We swam at the beach for awhile and were the only people there. The sunsets from the beach were SPECTACULAR! We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this state park! Nearest gas station is a long drive away too. Come prepared with enough ice or build the drive to get ice into your itinerary.

Great location but super un level gravel campsite, AR08. No power or water but lake access is worth the sacrifice.

Beautiful park with campgrounds. We camped. Arch Rock camping pads didn't seem to be level. But we knew in advance, so we brought extra plastic levelers. It was very peaceful. ✌️
Roni B — Google review
This place is amazing!!! My family has camped here twice and go fishing here. But this was my first and my goodness, nature is a beautiful thing🥰 Try to be careful on where u reserve though. Some designated tent sites are too small if u have a big tent. We were at the Tatanka section. They also have cabins. I highly recommend it here. Also, on a side note, for the bathrooms, they keep them pretty clean and actually smelling good😄
Alex M — Google review
Beach was small and there were lots of weeds in the sand. The kind of weeds that have hard branches that poke through your shoes. The views were beautiful at sunset. The beach was shallow which made swimming awesome! The park itself was weird because we had to take a gravel road for almost an hour to find the park. When we got there, they said you could only book a camp site over the phone or online. We use Roger's phone carrier as we are Canadian and there was no network at all. Eventually they let us book at the toll booth but it took a while to convince them. It was $33 USD to tent camp for one night with no hookups. They have no convenience store anywhere in the park. There is a restaurant at the marina but it was hard to find parking and you would have to walk through a bunch of private cabin trailers to get there. We skipped it. Campsite was quiet and not very occupied. Lots of stars. We stayed at the Homestead campground and there was a firepit, but nowhere to get wood that we were able to find. Cement picnic tables which were way more practical than traditional wood picnic tables.

This museum of the wild West and art gallery is a must see!!!!! Amazing original art by the own Bob Coronato! Focus is rodeo art and Western art. Art by many other artists from etchings, paintings, wood carvings, stone work, alabaster lamps .. Focus of the gallery & museum is American Indian art and jewelry, Western art and jewelry and a phenomenal selection! Great belt buckles and turquoise jewelry. Early west museum includes an astounding amount of artifacts but more importantly a true understanding of the culture and depth of knowledge with artifacts that I have never seen or even knew existed. Amazing environment to view the artifacts including smell of sage that increases the reality and feeling, very theatrical with the authentic music, really amazing experience!! Bob is extremely knowledgeable and fun to talk with. The prices are great. I'm so happy that we stopped and took time to experience the Rogue's Gallery!

Located just outside the entrance to Devils Tower, the Devils Tower Trading Post and KOA offer a range of amenities including food options, souvenirs, gifts, and camping supplies. The trading post is known for its variety of gifts and souvenirs while also providing food options. Visitors can expect a spacious parking lot with stunning views but should be prepared for potential crowding during peak times.
SO. MANY. SOUVENIRS! I mean they have just about everything you could want. This being one of the hottest trails for people riding motorcycles they have a lot of stuff related to motorcycles. I bought a few of the regular small souvenirs that I always get at places and I feel like the prices were fair or comparable to what I’ve spent other places. They have all kinds of stickers, patches, shirts, hoodies and just so much more. There is another shop across the road but they don’t have near as much to choose from as this place does.

Restrooms were closed and they had a weird song about men being neutered playing. Will not be back. In response to the owner: I am not "sabotaging" your business by writing an honest review. If that is your response that is concerning. I came in with a group of three others. We were looking to use the restroom and browse around. The hall to the restroom had a rope across it and it said restroom closed. The song playing overhead was county and the lyrics were mentioning about men getting spray tans and men being neutered. Would it be better if I had the other members of my group write reviews as well? Upon looking further it appears that for every low review your response is "all lies!" and "not true" and "sabotage". That is how businesses stay stagnant. Would not recommend this place to anyone! The place across the street had the restrooms open and no strange music playing. Also, as you can see, the owner does not take criticism well.

This museum is a real gem. It has many relevant artifacts, and the staff was very informative. The owners should be proud of what they have done here. Devils Tower National Monument

Mentioned on

National reserve
Sights & Landmarks
Devils Tower National Monument, the first national monument in the United States, is a significant landmark nestled in the Black Hills grasslands. Soaring nearly 900 feet, this climbable rock formation is renowned for its unique geological patterns and rich history. Sacred to Native American tribes, it has become a prime destination for rock climbers, hikers, photographers, and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. The site's regulations ensure proper management and protection while allowing public access to experience this remarkable geological wonder firsthand.
Cool place to stop. There are two trails around the tower. One shorter (45min-1h) on a paved surface and the longer one. The visitor center has cool data and a small shop. It also has water to refill the bottles and flush bathrooms. You can use the National Park Annual Pass to enter for free.
Ana M — Google review
Accessible for all, no hike needed unless you want to. The easy 1.6 miles loop around the base have amazing views. Nice scenic drive with red rocks, hay bails and longhorn cows.
Lisa C — Google review
Getting up to the parking lot took an hour because there's a stop light at the bottom of the hill that filters how much traffic gets to the top. Of course this is after you've already entered into the park, so if you turn around and leave you would pay to have seen nothing. This is an easy attraction to visit once you get to the top. There is a walkable trail, and lots of parking. Or benches looking at it if thats more your speed. The visitor center has many collectable items as well as a self guided tour of history. You can sign up to climb it, just remember what you are climbing and that it is sacred ground.
C Y — Google review
Devils Tower National Monument completely blew me away. Seeing this massive rock formation rise out of the rolling hills is absolutely awe-inspiring. Pictures don’t do it justice; you have to experience it in person to appreciate how majestic and otherworldly it feels. The trails around the base are fantastic, well-marked, scenic, and full of viewpoints that show off the tower from every angle. The park is clean, well-maintained, and easy to explore. Whether you’re hiking, taking photos, or just soaking in the view, Devils Tower is a must-see. Truly one of the most unique and powerful natural landmarks!!
Vee K — Google review
Everyone will have their own experience as it will differ from person to person. I had a surreal and profound one, visiting this enormous monument also called as Mato Tipila. There are two trails, Tower and Red beds trail. I would recommend doing the tower loop trail as it circles close to the tower. There are some amazing Lookout points once you’ll finish about 3/4 of the loop going clockwise. Do check out the visitor center / gift shop and learn about all the different folklore regarding how the tower was formed. Since the shutdown is in place, there was no entry fees, but otherwise I believe it $25. -Do keep an eye out for the climbers as that will give you an idea of how big the tower is and also how stupid and audacious humans are to mess with everything that is out there irrespective of the fact that some places have spiritual importance and hold deep relations to some tribes. I did not stay for the night, but I’m sure the sky would be very amazing to watch during the night time. If you are into stargazing/Milky Way then then you should go for it. Do check the weather before your visit as it can change within minutes While I was there, twice it snowed a little bit, and then the sun came out as well. A couple of nearby spots that you can also visit are the Prairie dog town and wind circle sculpture. I visited those places on my way back to Rapid City. Hope this was helpful.
Nishant P — Google review
Beautiful small park with million dollar views and fantastic trails. Takes a couple of days to hike them all unless you are really energetic, but there is a nice campground right in the park so you don’t even have to leave. Personally I would avoid the overcrowded (and slippery) paved trail from the visitors center. The Red Bed trail, although longer, gives much better views and is much less crowded.
Amanda M — Google review
This is my favorite place in north eastern wyoming! Its only about an hour and a half from Rapid City. If youre visiting mount rushmore and skipping devils tower, what even are you doing? There is a very easy hike around the base of the tower, where you can see the full 360 degrees of it, and gasp at the crazy rock climbers! Theres also tons of prarie dogs and deer here! It is NOT pet friendly. And that isn't to be mean to dogs. There are porcupines here and the closest vet is over an hour away. It is NOT pet friendly for the safety of your animals, not for the annoyance of you. Please leave your dogs at home or in your camper, or skip the hiking trail. There is RV parking here! And camping near and around here! It is very family friendly. The hike around the base is easy and short, even the newly walking will enjoy it, and when they want mommy or daddy to carry them you dont have a terribly long way to do so *exclusive to the time im writing this, the visitor center is open amid the government shut down. The book store is owned by a non government entity and is sponsoring the center being open*

An absolutely stunning place — even more impressive in person than in photos. The tower rises out of the landscape in a way that doesn’t look real, and the surrounding trails give you incredible views from every angle. The main loop is easy to walk and well-maintained, with clear signage and plenty of spots to stop for photos. Rangers are knowledgeable and friendly, and the visitor center is small but informative. It’s peaceful, scenic, and carries a sense of awe that sticks with you long after you leave. A must-see stop if you’re anywhere near northeast Wyoming.

Tower Trail is the trail you’ll want to do to get as close as possible to Devils Tower. it is a loop around Devils Tower. this loop is the most popular thing to do in the park. This trail is pretty easy and gives you some great views of the tower. If you want to truly be quick and not hike the whole 1.3-mile paved trail, then you will want to start off the loop going LEFT when you are starting from the visitor center. (There is a spot once you start the trail where there are seemingly 2 ways to go, straight and to the left.) Then soon you will see the massive Devil's Tower in front of you. but I would recommend doing the whole tower trail (just 1.3 miles) it will give you different angles of Devils Tower. it is the only trail that is paved. However, do remember that climbing on the rocks isn’t allowed without a permit so stay off of the boulders.

Devils Tower Visitor Center

Visitor center
The Devils Tower Visitor Center is a charming log cabin nestled in the dense trees at the end of the park road. Built in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it offers assistance to visitors and features interpretive displays, maps, and Junior Ranger booklets. The center also houses a small gift shop and provides a great view of Devils Tower from its parking lot. Visitors can explore educational exhibits and enjoy clean facilities while taking in the surrounding wildlife.
I have loved this site ever since I was a little kid after seeing the movie Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind. Second trip here and we will definitely return again in the future. Go to the visitor center in the early am before it gets busy. We went on a Monday at 930am and had no issues, but as we left around 1230pm there was a very long slow line to enter.

Even after seeing 'Close Encounters' many times growing up, seeing Devil's Tower in person was quite amazing. It was fabulous to be there in person, read about how the Tower was formed, and learn about the connection with Native American peoples. We loved the experience of hiking around the base of the Tower on the Tower Loop Trail so we could see the Tower from every angle. The park service created a 1.3 mile paved trail around the base for guests to follow. Be sure to take your time, read the signs, and appreciate the views. Also, look up at the Tower closely as you may get to see climbers making their way up. We saw a number of climbers on the side of the Tower to the left of the "Window" during our early morning visit. Note 1 - RV and trailer parking: The visitor center parking lots are rather small and not made to accommodate longer or larger RVs or trailers. The park has a designated lot just past the prairie dog town where you can drop your RV or trailer. Ask the park staff what the best way is to get to the visitor center if you use this lot. Note 2- Visitor Center: The visitor center is located in a historic building and is relatively small. There are interpretive exhibits in the visitor center and a gift shop. Bring your patience as the spaces can get very crowded. Note 3- Trails: The Red Beds Trail is a second and longer loop trail (2.8 miles) further down the hill that also circles the Tower. We hiked the trail from the campground and made the entire circuit. It took us a little over 3 hours, including our time at the visitor center.

Worth the travel, the Devils Tower is truly majestic in person. The hike around it is not too tiring and manageable, offering numerous breathtaking views. It’s an enjoyable and fun experience. If you’re a fan of national parks, it’s a must-visit.

Our family was up this way for a reunion and HAD to make a day trip to see Devil's Tower. While there, we stopped by the visitor's center and got many souvenirs. My daughter had brought a suitcase full of Webkins, which was stolen at a rest stop just after crossing into South Dakota, and that included many of her favorite stuffed animals. So when we stopped by this visitor's center, and she fell in love with a Pookie Stuffed animal there, I had to get it for her. We took a hike around the tower, where I took some pics I'm dropping below. I was struck by the indian prayer bags on trees there. But we had gotten all the way to Hwy 24 when my daughter exclaimed that she'd LOST her Pookie! I had to turn the car around, driving back to the visitor's center, sure that I'd have to buy another one. But the kind folks at the visitor's center had found Pookie, and had him waiting for us when we arrived back. I didn't have to show a receipt or anything, they remembered us. I'll never forget it.

Very small parking area but no problem finding parking midday. Bathrooms were surprisingly clean! The grounds still looked taken care of. Shame that someone stole the passport stamp the staff left outside the visitor center for us visitors to use. Lots of pull offs and a nice area to pullover and see the prairie dogs (close to the entrance).

This was a very petit but awesome visitors centre! We love the facility, staff were extremely helpful, and was super Fun. They had water stations out front for people as well.
