Village Creek State Park

Mentioned on
1 list
State park
Nature & Parks
Park
Nestled near Lumberton, Village Creek State Park is a hidden gem for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. This picturesque park features lush forests, serene cypress swamps, and the winding Village Creek, making it an ideal spot for birdwatching, camping, fishing, and canoeing. Anglers will delight in the variety of fish available here—bass, catfish, and sunfish are just a few of the catches waiting to be reeled in from either the banks or a boat.
Village Creek State Park is a fantastic destination for those looking to unwind, escape the hustle and bustle of the city, and connect with nature. This beautiful camping spot truly has it all: electricity hookups, water access, clean restrooms, showers, and a stunning river ideal for water sports. My friends, children, and I had an unforgettable time there, and I highly recommend it. It’s also very affordable, with a nightly stay costing no more than $21, including vehicle parking. For an outdoor adventure that won’t break the bank, Village Creek State Park is the perfect choice!

Staff and volunteers are very nice, but prepare yourself for dragging all your stuff from the parking lot to the primitive campground.   Also, there is a deranged drunken neighbor across the water who plays karaoke,  revs motors, and has his friends singing and yelling over dancehall-quality speakers all night long. Train noise throughout the night too.  The water was too high to rent a kayak. We fished and hiked the trails. One shower house/flushing toilets for the whole camp,  driving distance from the primitive camping.
Larah O — Google review
I've stayed here twice. Once in a tent, that experience was ok. The spaces are tight. This time we stayed in a cabin. It was really nice and peaceful the restroom was nice and big. The kitchen was very nice. Plenty of hot water to go around. The fishing and swimming access wasn't good. However, it was very quiet. The restrooms are nice. The trails are pretty well marked and maintained.
Rebecca P — Google review
The park was small and the primitive camp sites are nice but you do have to walk a ways from the parking lot to get to them, make sure you bring a buggy. There are no restrooms by the primitive site only Port O potties. The restrooms and shower are pretty nice by the RV site. If you’re coming for hiking they still have not repaired the damage from Hurricane Harvey so the trail to get to the swimming isn’t open. They don’t tell you this when you check in and the maps are not updated. I don’t see how after 8 years they can’t update the maps. We came to hike and swim and are not able to swim. We asked to canoe yesterday and were told no as they didn’t have enough staff. Pretty bummed we came to do these things and couldn’t. There are loud trains throughout the night and construction happenings very early in the morning. It’s very loud at night.

We really enjoyed our visit with Alex the Park Ranger on the Winter Solstice. He was ready when we arrived with telescopes. He started with "Did you ever wonder what the Sun looks like through a powerful telescope? Want to see sunspots, solar flares, and more? Take a look." He also reminded us how important it is to turn our lights off at night, trying to do our part for light pollution.
Rhonda L — Google review
We took the family on a hike. We learned about mushrooms. The guide was kind and knowledgeable. He even had mosquito spray for people. We look forward to the next hike. We may come have a picnic here one day. Nice little gem hidden in Lumberton.
Starr L — Google review
Beautiful park with lots of hiking trails. One is currently closed for maintenance, meaning the upkeep is great here. We love the little workout trail! Next time we will rent kayaks and/or bring our bikes!
Francina S — Google review
2nd trip here. It's a small park with not a lot of fishing spots but very well kept and comfortable.

Big Thicket National Preserve

Nature preserve
Nature & Parks
More than 100,000 acres consisting of hiking trails, bird flyways, boating spots & hunting areas.
It is a great place to camp & hike. It has different units spreading around the southern Texas. I visited two units; Big Sandy Creek Unit (the only one allowed for cycling) and Turkey Creek Unit. Camping is free; you just need to get permit from the visitors center. I did camping and cycling in Big Sandy Trail, and spent the next day hiking in Turkey Creek Trail (the two units are about 30miles apart). I had an awesome experience and will definitely revisit if I’m anywhere close enough.

Awesome trail and welcome building. We went in march and was nice and cool.
Tammy C — Google review
A really special place run by a lot of great volunteers. We walked many of the trails and the volunteer guides pointed out so many plants and flowers we might have missed. There is no charge but donations are welcome and necessary to keep this preserve in operation and making necessary improvements to trails and wooded areas.
Chris S — Google review
Fun place to canoe with the family. Bring your own or rent. Pretty, hilly sandbars to climb, dig your toes into and have then have a picnic.
Liz D — Google review
There are many walking trails, it’s an extremely relaxing trails. There’s also benches for you to sit down it’s so quiet only noise is you breathing. If you want to bike on concrete there also a patch seven miles long that goes south to Kountze. You can also hear the birds in some of the open spaces.
David S — Google review
Worth the drive from Houston. Trails are much more maintained than most state parks. Nice amenities, cool boardwalks and random gems scattered.
Julio D — Google review
Husband and I walked the cypress trail, it was awesome!
Erin S — Google review
Good long hiking trail that is in good condition. Well wooded so good shade from the sun. All of the bridges were I. Great shape. Worth checking this place out for a good hime.

Martin Dies, Jr. State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Campground
705-acre pine forest & wetlands for outdoor activities such as canoeing, camping & hiking.
I recently visited Martin Dies Jr. State Park, and it was an absolutely beautiful experience. The park is surrounded by serene rivers and lakes, creating a peaceful atmosphere that instantly makes you feel connected to nature. The sound of birds chirping added a lovely natural soundtrack to the visit. There are plenty of well-maintained trails that take you through lush forests and even into some swampy areas, which gave the place a unique and wild vibe. One of the highlights was discovering a sanctuary area—quiet, untouched, and a great spot for reflection or just enjoying the view. The park is also very RV-friendly, and we saw quite a few people set up with their campers, clearly having a great time. It’s the kind of place where you could easily spend a weekend just relaxing and recharging. What really surprised me was how affordable it was—only $4 per person for entry. For that price, you get access to a truly scenic and peaceful getaway. I went with some friends, and we all left feeling refreshed and happy. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for a budget-friendly escape into nature!
Prabin K — Google review
Martin Dies is our go-to camping spot! The camp and sites are always clean and well maintained, the park staff are always friendly and helpful and there are beautiful view all throughout the park. This was our first camping trip with our 2 year old and it was the perfect spot. Even our teenagers had a blast!
Shayla S — Google review
Extremely satisfied. Clean restrooms and hot showers. Camp sites are very roomy. Plenty of privacy and leg stretching area, and adequate room for several tents. RV spots are very roomy as well, Convenient dump stations and garbage dumpsters available. Electric and water access on certain sites. There are a few extra parking spaces for additional vehicles if needed. Canoeing tours and rentals available as well. Great fishing, lots of shade trees. Very affordable for day or weekend camping. Felt very safe, park rangers make regular rounds and are very helpful and friendly. They are doing a great job in keeping the park a nice place to come. Very respectful and responsive.
Carrie M — Google review
The park is a little far from The Woodlands, but it is worth the drive. The camping locations are well maintained and a lot of the camp sites have an enclosed eating area that you can sleep in if you want (The small brown building in a couple of the pictures). We camped with some of our friends that like to camp as well (Pictured) and had a great time hiking the many trails, but don't forget the bug spray and citronella candles/tiki torches.
Thomas K — Google review
I absolutely loved this park. Lots of trees for shade, clean bathrooms, quiet. If it rains the trails to flood. But there’s kayaks to rent and the river is amazing!
Jacqueline H — Google review
Stayed at site #207 , henhouse unit. Nice east Texas state park. Sites are spacious and well maintained. Asphalt RV pad was a little off level, but doable and in good shape. We were there end of April to may 2 and the bugs were plentiful, so be prepared. The trees block most of the wind. Great scenery all around. We were getting about 4 bars cell signal on Verizon, and very little over the air TV reception at this location in the park. Water pressure was a little low. Electrical, 50, 30, 20 amp was good and steady. Bath house/ restrooms were a bit of a walk away but fairly clean and well stocked. Handicapped accessible although kind of small. Two lane boat ramp and fish cleaning station. This lake is great for fishing, but the highlight is the canoeing /kyacking areas. Really unique scenery. There are only one dump station on this side of the park , and the single trash dumpster is somewhere so be prepared to drive around a bit. All in all this is a nice quiet park to visit.
True T — Google review
A great state park, especially for watersports. Free monthly canoe/kayak tours (and rentals if you don't have your own). Great fishing, hiking too. Campsites are well separated by thick foliage.
Ashley B — Google review
Fun hidden gem on the Neches. Lots of trees, great views of the river, and tons of wildlife! Fishing is good, and the gators don't really mess with your lines. Bring bug spray, as this place is a water heavy park. In the spring, the drive-in from Houston is amazing if you come thru New Waverly, wild flowers everywhere. Enjoy

My children and I had a great time exploring there! Kind of wished they had a tour going for Sunday but it was still nice for us to take our time to look at things. We then when to Pickett house right next door for lunch. My children had so much fun and will go there again when they have events.

Great way to spend a few hours with the family. Quaint little village with lots of history and neat things to look at. It was nice and peaceful. Self-guided tour, but the staff in the gift shop and restaurant gave us friendly and excellent service. It is a bit of walking and did not have ramps available in a couple of areas (we had to pick up the stroller and carry up some stairs twice) but mostly easily accessible. Prices in the restaurant, village and gift shop were all reasonable. There is no menu, its a set family style meal and it's all you can eat. The food was fresh and delicious, like it came straight out of a Granny's kitchen. Definitely would love to go back.
Jess B — Google review
Neat place. Nice gift shop. It took us about 40 minutes to go through the outer buildings and about 30 minutes to go through the store. The lady behind the counter was knowledgeable & nice. I wouldn't eat at the restaurant again but the rest of the experience was good.
Catina L — Google review
This is an amazing hidden gem. If you love history, especially Texas history, you won’t want to miss this stop in your travels. Best $5 ever!
Cricket W — Google review
Amazing place to transport back in time to see what life was like in frontier towns. Several buildings are authentic or parts are authentic from old towns in the area. Call ahead to find when they are providing demonstrations as you will be able to see people performing some of the trades. Even without the performances, I loved this destination.

Really cool buildings outside. I wish there was a tour guide. Inside there is a neat store and small museum. The information was neat as well.

Loved visiting this place and going through all the buildings that hold so much history. My favorites were the church and school. The gift shop has many treasures that you won't find elsewhere.

Naskila Casino

Casino
Casinos & Gambling
Not a bad spot. Never thought I’d find a casino in Texas. I’m glad there is one although it’s a two drive. I signed up for the rewards card and got $20 of FREEPLAY. I only wish that they had more of the lion link machines. They only have four of them and same people are always on them, never having a chance to have a go at it. But there are a good variety of other games too to play.
Gen8Kamuri — Google review
Like any other CASINO, it is a matter of choice. It could be a source of either having fun or total devastation. The place is highly organised, with smokers and non-smokers in slot machine rooms. A good number of cleaned restrooms, plenty of free parking. Cold and hot non-alcoholic beverages and water are provided for free. There is a restaurant and a bar inside. And the wheelchair amenities are perfect on all accounts.
Waleed J — Google review
Nice casino 🎰 if you don’t mind the ride. Staff was friendly provides a free play for first timers. Free drinks and smoking sections for those who smoke.
Kim P — Google review
Good games. Good atmosphere. No alcohol but free soda and water so don't gotta deal with drunks went on Saturday and was a lot of people but still machines available. Some areas were hot but all in all a nice experience. Will definitely be back
David K — Google review
Go early if you can, buses tend to drop off people at 11 so there’s a check in lane for players card. Very clean facility that has a non-smoking area and also a smoking area. Cons are that restrooms are far away from play area but staff is super attentive and friendly. They have non alcoholic drinks and coffee. Food not so much so eat beforehand. Love their native history. Will be going back
Van G — Google review
Parking is difficult as spaces too close together. More dollar machines than other denominations. Can drop a lot in a short time without any significant wins. My opinions compared to much nicer Oklahoma casinos.
Sue S — Google review
A very good relaxation location to win and lose your money. However, the win ratings are really high through the weekend's, but extremely crowded. It's fun, exciting, friendly staff and great food. The distance is equally close if you drive from afar. I love it!!! ❤️
Larenzo S — Google review
I went on a Sunday just after lunchtime and the place was packed. It's relatively small so it took a bit to find an empty machine to place but eventually the crowd thinned out and I found some good games to play and ended up winning about $400. Definitely will be going back. Great for a quick day trip so you don't have to go to Louisiana. They also have a designated smoking area and ATM fee was only $2. 👍

Rayburn Country Resort

Golf Courses
Only had the privilege of playing here a few times and I loved the course. Fun layout and the greens keepers do a great job of keeping everything looking good. They have the absolute best cart girl I’ve ever met. Makenzie is a sweetheart and she’s diligent. Saw her multiple times during our round and she always stopped to ask if we needed anything. (Which we did) 10/10 recommend coming to Rayburn for a golf trip.
Charles P — Google review
Our girls' golf trip to Rayburn Resort was absolutely amazing! The golf course was in good condition, offering a challenging back nine that truly tested our skills. After our rounds, we enjoyed delicious meals at the resort's restaurant; the food was always hot and flavorful, and the service was exceptional. Our accommodations were spotless, with comfortable beds that provided a restful night's sleep. We also loved browsing the golf shop, which offered a fantastic selection of stylish clothes and shoes. Overall, Rayburn Resort provided an unforgettable experience, and we can't wait to return - we think this would be a great place to come for our next couples trip too.
Nyla S — Google review
The Rayburn resort is a good place to stay. Reasonable rates, clean rooms a coffee shop and restaurant. The staff are fantastic! Honorable mention to Ms. Laurie Leslie and Mr. Jordan Bell for outstanding customer support! It is peaceful and relaxing at Rayburn Country Resort, I'll return time and time again!

I was invited to their breakfast buffet and it was amazing! The new Sammy rays addition is gorgeous and inviting. I loved being able to grab my food and look out the windows to the beautiful view. All the staff members were more than welcoming and extremely friendly. 10/10 would recommend to everyone !!!

This Golf Course is terrific and well maintained, Club house is amazing and exceptional food, Me and my friends have played Golf around the world, and we always come back here regularly, key to that is the warm welcoming service from the beverage cart lady Makenzie, second to none!! Remembered our names on each pass!! Can’t wait to get back again!!

The restaurant was clean and the staff friendly. The golf course beautiful and the food was great. Wonderful atmosphere. 2 thumbs up.

This place is a hidden gem! The area is beautiful, and the resort has just the right atmosphere. Plenty to do, or plenty of opportunity to rest and relax if that's what you are looking for. Drinks and food are great! Also, Saturday night karaoke is off the chain!

12 of us came here to celebrate Birthday dinner. It was a terrible experience. Waitress was nonexistent. Reservation was at 7:30 took 2 hrs for us to get our dinner. A manager was very rude to several of the ladies at our table. Insisted we had a unreasonable expectation to get served appropriate and quickly. Some of our dinners came out cold. When asked the Manager to please reheat, he was indignation to the request. Never offered us to rectify the situation. Terrible experience.

I went today to go explore and to see what was in the park. As I got there, I noticed there was not many trails but the scenery was beautiful. I hiked the Sawmill trail for about 2 miles but didn't go to the end because it was getting dark. However, the time I was there walking it was very peaceful. There was no noise and the trail was very clean side to side and the terrain. I also really like the signs with arrows because it easily shows you the way. If you want to enjoy peace and quiet and enjoy nature, then this is a good place to go.
Vanessa R — Google review
Absolutely wonderful experience here! Great campsites in the woods worth amenities. Perfect for family and friends. Lots to explore and great swimming
Melissa B — Google review
This is a really cool place for swimming, hiking and camping. The campsites don’t have any electric or sewage hook up, but there is water at a few sites. There is also a small lake, with a sandy shore area making the water easily accessible. Great place for tent camping, I believe there is about 12 campsites, and there is a bathroom and showers available.
OUTLAW 8 — Google review
Our grandson loved it ! Has shallow streams ( use normal precautions , rocks are slick as nature produces algae growth in wet areas!) He had trails to walk. The water fall is gorgeous and a great photo opportunity! Swimming area on one end of spring water filled lake with decent sandbar to relax on if you wish.. He caught his first fish on his mini Spider-Man rod/ real combo. Older kids were out enjoying the trail and fishing. Awesome lake to go canoeing or tubing on. Has bathrooms and showers has some spots with spring water on tap if you’re camping. Really great place to spend the day our camp for a couple of days if you need to get away, especially if you have younger children are even older children that might enjoy nature trail hikes. As an adult, this is a great place to camp where you are not 10 miles from the nearest boat ramp and access to Rayburn. So if you wanted to shower and relax for the night and go fishing the next day on Rayburn, this is an optimum place to do just that. Has covered open sitting tables. Room enough for six - seven families. And each camper site had table/ grill . Other tent sites available.

Took me about 45 in and 45 minutes out a beautiful 3 mile hike for sure 🫶🏻 Me and my bestfriend come here to avoid our adult problems and pretend we're kids again Did I mention it makes me feel like a kid again🫶🏻 Highly recommend

Beautiful little place in the National Forest. Self pay when you enter, camping is $10 a night or $5 for day use. Nice natural springs and rock to explore and swim in or you can go out to the little lake. Showers and bathrooms. It's beautiful out here and one of our favorite places.

I went with my best friend and our kids, had a lot of fun but the swing was gone. The area was beautiful and our children had so much fun. We would definitely go back

Area is very well developed. Campsites designated in safe areas, grills & bathrooms. White sand beach area in the middle of the woods formed by the clear running spring water and local creeks. Clean rec. site, original cemetery, safe trails and parking. Could visit with young kids or elders.

Naranjo Museum-Natural History

Natural history museum
Museums
Specialty Museums
Museum with an eclectic collection of dinosaur bones, fossils, weapons & space shuttle artifacts.
We walked in the door and were greeted by very kind workers. The admission price to get in is affordable. I was very pleasantly surprised when we walked in to see all kinds of amazing things. As a person who is very fond of ancient history, I was absolutely thrilled to see coins from ancient Rome, Egypt, Israel, and more. There were even interesting Pre-Historic artifacts. My son loved the dinosaur exhibit. There are large dinosaur displays and fossil digging stations for children and adults to enjoy. When we were finished looking at all of the exhibits, we decided to stop at the gift shop on the way out. The gift shop had a lot of options to purchase for both children and adults. The museum is not huge, but there is a lot to see and I was very happy with their collection. The atmosphere was wonderful. It was quiet, and everything was beautifully organized. If I find myself in Lufkin again, I will definitely be back.
Joey W — Google review
Really enjoyed my experience there and definitely recommend visiting. One thing I would like to see is more information on the time periods and what led to the transitions.
Carlos G — Google review
Such a cute little museum to learn about different times. The receptionist was nice and welcoming. They had so many fossils, rocks, jewelry, tools. I wasn't expecting there to be so many cool things lol. My son really enjoyed himself and he gets bored easily. He was excited to go to the gift shop and get the dinosaur slime and space necklace.
Candace — Google review
We tried this small museum in Lufkin and was pleasantly surprised. This is a great museum for kids; especially if you don't want to travel to a big city. It doesn't take too long to see everything. It's not to expensive either. My little boy had a blast. This musuem is definitely worth checking out.
Daniel H — Google review
We were so surprised how many wonderfully different exhibits they had in such a small place. Great place for people that love to learn more about dinosaurs and Vikings and the medieval times, etc. Not too overwhelming, either!
Kate T — Google review
Great Educational Experience for the entire family. Very Fun and Immersive exhibits with lots of artifacts to look at.
WILLIAM B — Google review
My family was very impressed with this museum. Our son came to visit and brought his friend with him. His last name is Naranjo, so he was pretty excited about it. It is so much bigger than it looks. The displays are amazing and informative. There is something for everyone.
Marie S — Google review
A Gem for Dinosaur Enthusiasts, Naranjo Museum-Natural History you will not miss it. We visited it today. We loved it. The exhibits are informative, providing fascinating insights into the lives of these magnificent creatures. The display of authentic dinosaur bones, which brings a tangible sense of reality to the creatures that once roamed our planet. The inclusion of a moon stone from the Apollo 14 mission adds an unexpected but delightful twist to the experience, bridging the gap between prehistoric life and human achievements in space exploration. They have a gift shop and they give scavenger hunt print out to keep you engage. I completed mine! Parking - very easy Tickets - $ (affordable) Time required ( 1- 2 hours) depends wheel chair accessible - Yes Customer service - excellent Restrooms - available ( reasonable) crowded ( not really) provides summer camp ( Yes) informative/ worth spending ( Yes - also depends on your kids interests) Recommended ( 100%)

Just passing through Lufkin for my husband's job and we found this spot. I needed a place to entertain my kids and this was the perfect place. My little ones enjoyed it so much. There was so much to do. The front desk lady was very helpful and friendly. There was no one hovering over you as the kids felt free to jump around as there were so many activities. And most of all it was free! I would love to go back if I'm in the area. I definitely recommend this museum.

This place is awesome. If you have young kids, you should absolutely check it out. My 1 year old daughter, 3 year old son and 5 year old son all love it. They have a great outdoor playground and some old machines that they can climb on. Inside there is a huge interactive play are that encourages pretend and creative play. It's all free.

Awesome free museum thanks to people who donate!! Very interactive for adults and kids of all ages all through out it. They have scavenger hunts, and outdoor museum. My kids loved it. 4&5. They loved the kids area the most and dressed up pretend play as they lived back in the day!! We had an amazing time and learned alot!

Came here for my nephew's birthday party. It was almost a 2 hour drive, but it's a cute little museum with some interesting history to learn from it. I bought some postcards, stickers, a fridge magnet and a t-shirt. There are pamphlets for scavenger hunts, sketching, etc, and plenty of activities for young children to enjoy as well. There is a play room where kids can make names or pictures with wooden pegs, make poems on a magnetic board, dress up like a fireman, or dress up in vintage clothing and play house. I would absolutely recommend bringing your children here, and checking out the gift shop too.

We only had an hour so definitely not enough time to check out the trails. We plan to go back. Very interesting history and present day findings. It’s free but take donations. So if you want to take a class or small group on a budget, this is the place. They even have a room for kids. Check it out.

Really interesting smallish museum which we visited on our recent trip down to Houston. Some exhibits inside which talk through the history and jobs involved in the forestry business with old.ohitos and equipment from the past. There is also good reference to the inequality in pay and jobs available for Women and people of colour in the early years and the segregation. Outside there is a steam train showing what would have been used and some additional equipment from the past.
Mark I — Google review
We really enjoyed the museum. Admission is FREE but donations are gratefully accepted. We decided to check it out since it was too chilly to hike at the State Park. There is a great hands on area for the kids to play. My kids really enjoyed the train and vehicles on the backside of the property but it was really cold and we couldn't stay out in that weather for too long.

Ellen Trout Zoo

Zoo
Zoos & Aquariums
Rhinos, big cats & many other species plus educational programs in a leafy 15-acre spot.
This is a VERY cool zoo. Its a smaller scale zoo but you can get closer to the animals than most big zoos. Very much enjoyed our trip. Was certainly worth the almost 2 hr trip to get there. The staff were all super friendly as well
Jp L — Google review
This is a wonderful zoo! It is a smaller zoo yet it has a great variety of animals. The grounds are beautiful with shade-covered walkways. Don't be surprised to see a gorgeous peacock walk right by you as they roam around! And, the train that goes around the zoo is always a favorite! Bring a picnic lunch and the kids can enjoy the playground.
Jerri H — Google review
This is a late review as I went in May so things might have been fixed. The entrance is hard to find. They allow giant crowds to block the entrance/exit gates so you can't leave when you want to. I was stuck there an extra half hour because a big group was just hanging out at the gates and not allowing anyone through. This is a small little zoo but has a good variety of animals. Some of the enclosures were definitely too small for the animals. Some didnt have enough water. Snake cages were gross. So many under construction or empty areas.
Samantha H — Google review
It's nice that it provides alot of shade as ur walking through, especially in the summer. I only wish they would number their trails. The price of one ticket you would pay somewhere else is what I paid for the price of two tickets here. They could use to add something new to their concession stand. We always enjoy it and of course the train is the main attraction.
Brittany X — Google review
An absolute gem of a zoo. Small and quaint, but comfortable and exciting at every turn. So enjoyable to wander the paths under the canopy of trees to have up-close and personal experiences with the animals!
Michael B — Google review
It was a great experience coming to the Ellen Trout Zoo. Please keep in mind there is a decent amount of construction, add-ons, and habitat changes. It's a great, personal-feeling, smaller zoo experience that still seems to be growing. We became members today as well in hopes to further support the foundation and enjoying further trips here as well! Both child and adult friendly and we all had a great experience walking around the park and experiencing what the Ellen Trout Experience is all about! Friendly staff and quick entry process.
Kory B — Google review
Even with a map it’s hard to know where to go. They mostly inhale alligators, crocodiles and turtles. Oh they have a raccoon. The zoo looks like it’s not taken care of. Why are the animals not paired? Shouldn’t there be at least 2 of each species? Especially the cats? They seem so lonely, and their areas are not very big for the size of the animal. This was such a disappointing trip. I won’t be returning.
Machelle S — Google review
Loved this zoo. Great price ($10 and 3 yo U are free). You can get really close to some of the animals and there are peacocks running around which is fun. It wasn’t over crowded and the right length of time for small kids. The entrance is set back and hard to find but almost right across from the train. The train ride was $2 each (3yo and U free) and the toddlers loved it. There is a lot of different parking lots which was also a little confusing but we were able to figure it out. Lots of places to play or eat lunch at the free park areas outside of the zoo. We brought in water and small snacks

Hiking the 4-C National Recreation Trail in Davy Crockett National Forest was very peaceful. I went on a Sunday morning, and even though I hiked for about 3 hours, I only ever saw one other set of hikers on the trail. About 2/3 of the northern paer od the trail is currently shut down, so there currently isn't access to that, but the part I did was great. Not strenuous.

I've been here in the past and it was a wonderful spot that I will return to very soon. Lots of wildlife and nature. Beware of your surroundings, remember your in other animals habitats, there not in yours.

We stayed at the Ratcliff Recreation Area for 3 days camping. It was absolutely beautiful and quiet (except for some highway noise). We brought our dog, and he had a blast as well! Most people followed the rules by keeping their dogs on leash, saw a couple without but they were well behaved at least. Trails are easy to navigate and were well taken care of, there's even an accessible hiking trail for people with mobility aids! Love this! Restrooms were cleaned daily by camp hosts and we're very clean and stocked with TP, but no soap dispenser or paper towels/hand dryers. Showers worked great, hot water came on quickly and stayed hot! Overall 10/10 camping trip and we'll definitely be back to do it again soon!

First you need to make sure they have available campsite or RV site before you drive. This place is very well organized and managed. Great for friends, family, and solo camping. There's a 20 miles hiking trail you can hike, but if that too much for you. There's a 4 loop hike around the campsite will take you by the lake to the picnic area and back to your campsite. Hammock are allowed which is Awesome! Showers/ bathrooms get clean daily. There's a fire pit NOT a grill by the tent campsite. You will need grilling net or your own grill. I used the foil to wrap the good. Couple tent campsite are close to each other for a group camping. If you have a truck you can find a fire wood around the park and bring it to your campsite( save you some money) You can use a boat ( NO Motor) in the lake to fish. There's a hardware a store/ beers about 2.3 miles away.

Beautiful, quiet and clean camp grounds on the lake. We enjoyed the short Tall Pines Trail and hiked about two hours on the 4C trail which was well kept and in general a very nice forest.

Good place to back pack, lots of areas to stage water, clearly marked trails, and lots of wilderness. Please be mindful of weather patterns. I had to cut a backpacking trip short due to flooding as you approach the Neches River. Still was a fun trip.

If you're looking for place to get away and camp, tucked away amongst the Tall swaying East Texas Pines; this is it. Handicap Accessible Camping, Showers & Restrooms, to Tents and RVs. Hiking is Full of unexpected Moments, one will treasure for a life time. Maybe bird watching is more your Style. Check out the Waterfowl Walkway. Step back in time and explore the Sterne-Hoya House Museum, a 19th-century residence listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built by Adolphus Sterne, a Texas Revolution leader, it was later occupied by the von der Hoya family. The museum showcases the living conditions of both families with well-preserved rooms filled with antiques. Visitors can get a glimpse of life on the Texas frontier and learn about local history while admiring the beautiful architecture.
Really well-preserved museum with a super helpful tour guide. They had a small gift shop selection though sadly with no souvenir patches for my collection. Nacogdoches is also doing a summer scavenger hunt atm which sounds really fun and this was one of the stops on the list. It’s also easy walking distance to Lanana Creek and the Eyes of Father Margil

Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden

Garden
Nature & Parks
Discover the vibrant beauty of the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden, an expansive 8-acre botanical paradise located on the eastern edge of Stephen F. Austin University's campus in Texas. The garden boasts a delightful 1.25-mile walking trail surrounded by loblolly pines and featuring 50 benches, numerous planting beds, and a diverse array of floral species including azaleas, camellias, Japanese maples, and more.
Some of the plants were in full bloom, some were in the process of blooming, and some weren't in season yet. There are many paths which meet and diverge at multiple points. It only took me 1.5 hr to leisurely walk around the whole thing. That's not a bad thing, but you could always circle around to take each path to make it a longer walk. Or visit multiple times. A lot here to enjoy.
Catsur N — Google review
Nice trails and beutifull landscaping. Great for a Sunday Stroll.
James R — Google review
Lovely stroll in beautifully maintained gardens! Many markers to read and learn about the varieties of azaleas and other plants, and out of this world beautiful in the spring (in March). Could easily spend an hour meandering on this highly shaded walk. Can be easily walked with little effort. Some areas are wheelchair accessible, but not all. No bathrooms near park, so plan ahead. Plenty of benches to sit down and enjoy the scenery. Also connects to the shade garden at SFA as you cross the river on the bridge.
Amanda R — Google review
Compact, lush garden with meandering walking paths and sitting benches scattered throughout. While not big, there's plenty to see if you're willing to be interested in plants & greenery. In spite of being bordered by University Drive, little of the traffic noise permeates very far into the garden. The overall impression is of quiet solitude. On a weekday morning there were just a few other folks strolling the paths. It makes for a quiet retreat in the midst of the city.
Gregory M — Google review
We LOVED this garden with trails! What a treasure…we will be back! It is a well kept botanical garden with many seating areas for reading, relaxing, visiting, or picnicking. We loved the variety of plants that they grew.
Elizabeth W — Google review
My wife and I and our 2-month old came up to the area for the weekend to enjoy ourselves in nature away from the hustle and bustle of big city life. The Azalea Garden was the first green space we visited on our trip and it did not disappoint. The azaleas were obviously not in bloom in late July, but the winding paved paths through the garden (perfect for a stroller!) gave us our first concentrated dose of Piney Woods, Texas. We even discovered a new tree that blew us away. We'll let you figure out what it is. Here's a hint: It's a special type of bald cypress.
Henry D — Google review
Such a beautiful piece of land. We love to go for a small walk/ jog. It is being completely surrounded by nature while being in the middle of town. An absolute beautiful place to spend a healthy, dollar-free afternoon. Also, a really safe and great way to work-out toddler energy. We also had our Christmas photos here right when the trees changed.
Ashley S — Google review
I came from Houston to visit this place by searching on Google Maps. We entered by an one-way entrance which we had missed twice (that means we had made two rounds). The third time, thanks to a very kind man from the SFA Ground and Transportation in the nearby that we could find the way to get in there. Once we were inside, we saw some other parking lots on the other sides of the park, that meant there were other entrances, larger and easier to drive. If only Google Maps would have shown we the other way! This place is very nice, peaceful and plenty of beautiful flowers, but I am sure that many visitors from other places would miss out because it is too hard to find a way to access. That would be a shame since it is one of the most beautiful sites of Nacogdoches to visit.

Millard's Crossing Historic Village is a reconstructed historic village showcasing 19th century East Texas dwellings, including log cabins and Victorian homes. Each building was moved to the site and meticulously restored to reflect the period. Visitors can experience activities like writing with quill pens in the schoolhouse and using a hand plow in the garden. Nacogdoches' downtown area offers modern shops, cafes, and eateries within charming brick-lined streets filled with vibrant storefronts housed in historic structures.
My sons wedding very nice venue! Rustic inside barn area for eating after wedding was good had plenty people that was able to nove around without being crowded with a wedding of 85 people there is a handicap ramp to enter the barn. Area at main entrance there we also rented the chapel no ramp FYI it's a older church so it's pretty original if u have a wheelchair or cane or anything it's pretty hard to get in less u are being pretty much carried which we did one of the family members church is beautiful if u like older church vibes I qas told it fits 100 we had 85 still pretty snug in the benches the bathroom option outside the chapel is a no go idk if u have to rent those potty areas or not but they was locked the main entrance barn bathroom was great in size for wheelchair etc My mil had no issues in her chair there over all a good venue!

Incredibly educational re-enactments of pioneer times with hands-on experiences for kids and adults alike - forging, butter-making (and tasting!), weaving, leatherwork, calligraphy with quills, etc. Best field trip ever! And right in our own backyard! Many thanks to all the volunteers and donors who make Millard’s Crossing happen!

My children and I visited here for the Halloween 🎃 festivities. We enjoyed ourselves. It was $30 for me, 16 year old, and 8 year old. There was parking available which was included in the entry fee. We went during the day time. Horse rides, hay rides, pumpkin carving, petting zoo, candy galore, friendly staff. Night time experience would've been better however we couldn't make it later. Go at night if you can.

Our Junior troop visited and earned their Playing the Past badge. They dressed up with aprons and bonnets, made butter, did laundry, went to school and wrote with quills and ink, visited the blacksmith, and listened to music from the time period. They truly experienced life from a long time ago. It was an amazing field trip and our hosts really did a fantastic job making the experience come to life for them. Highly recommend. We will come back!

One of the air conditioners was not working correctly. We asked them to check on it. They did not get a professional. Their maintenance man checked on it and she said that he was formerly in the A/C industry. Why isn't he currently? is what I should have asked myself. If you're looking for something with rustic charm it is a beautiful venue. None of us however suggest that you use it during the summer months. It was ridiculously hot. One of the people who works there said that her wedding was in one of the buildings in September. She only told us how beautiful it was, but never told us how hot they were until I came in after the wedding to complain AGAIN about the air conditioner not working correctly and our guests being hot. Very unethical. She told me that the buildings are old and we should have considered that. (I should have said the buildings are old they should be properly insulated and air conditioned) She had initially told us, "there are two air conditioners so there'll be no problem keeping it cool. You can turn it down the night before and it'll be nice and cool for y'all." Our mistake was believing that they would both be in working order. (It was actually cooler outside in the shade than it was inside the Rebellion Barn.) One A/C constantly said call for service on the thermostat. It WAS a very beautiful wedding due to my daughter's beautiful choices and decorations that worked really well with the beautiful setting. That's the only reason it gets a whole three stars. It was 5 star decorations and 0 stars for being in working order. I guess I should give it stars for beauty, but if it's too hot to enjoy beauty doesn't matter. They said they were not going to rent it out anymore during the summer months which doesn't help us. She did give us a very small partial refund. So I guess they deserve 1 star. I think it should have been a 1/3 refund. We paid the extra $250 to get into the place the day before and told the lady that came in to check on us that it was very hot. At the time I thought it was just nerves because she said when you come in from outside it's really cool, but when we left the A/C was still not working correctly. They said we should have called someone. When we left everyone was gone and we didn't have any other numbers except the main Millard's crossing number. Also If you rent it the day before they don't let you in before noon and that is not long enough time before rehearsal. For your extra money they should let you in when they open. I hope this helps. Like I say it is a VERY beautiful venue, but do not rent it in the summertime with the hopes that the air conditioner will be working for you. It would be beautiful for a winter event or in the spring before it gets hot or in the fall after it cools down.

A Quick historical educational experience. Clean, well kept exhibits. Great gift store. Very friendly and helpful staff. Very easy and level circular trail near the main building with lots of historical information. (More extensive trail on the back end if interested) As out of state visitors, we had a great time. Texas people are great people.

The inside displays are done exceptionally well. There is also an excellent short video presentation. The Caddo mounds were fascinating, along with a reproduction outside of their grass houses. Suggest visiting when the weather is cool.

Amazing experience thanks to John! He was our tour guide and taught us so much about the Caddo people and the history of Texas. We had such a great time we went back again the next day to volunteer at the garden and build a fire. Thank you for everything John!

Excellent museum with well informed, interesting staff. They have a great video explaining who the Caddo were and the exhibits describe how they lived. There is a replica grass house and a flat, even path to the Mounds. It would be accessable for most people. There are also other walking trails behind the Mounds. There's also a garden called the Snake woman's garden. The whole site is interesting and well thought out. We really enjoyed our visit.
Kathy P — Google review
This was really nice. The museum is nicely done. There is about an 8 minute video that tells you about the Caddo people. Then you can go through the museum. IlThere were pictures with the explanation of what it was along with the Caddo pronunciation of the words. Outside, there was a replica of a home. There is a path that makes a circle, and as you walk along it, you pass the mounds. There are placards there to give you information about it. I was able to get my National Park passport book stamped! That was a bonus! The staff was great and was very knowledgeable.

Really pleasant and informative location to visit early Texans. Beautiful location, knowledgeable greeter, nice reproduction static displays of Caddo living, and interesting gift shop. Easy walks to grass house and mounds. The hut is impressive and tidy. Amazing the history buried within the mounds, built without the use of an air-conditioned skidsteer! Golf cart available for accessibility. Pleasant stop along El Camino Real. Viva Tejas!

It's fascinating to learn about the history of the Caddo Indians and their remarkable culture. Their pottery creations showcase exceptional craftsmanship and artistic skill. The discovery of arrowheads provides a glimpse into their hunting practices and survival techniques. The impressive mounds stand as testaments to their community efforts and architectural prowess. Exploring the legacy of the Caddo Indians allows us to appreciate their ingenuity and cultural heritage.

Awesome state park with some great trails and deep history. Saw the Sentry Pine, the old ccc reconstruction of Mission Tejas, and explored many of the trails. Was definitely worth the three hour drive to get here.

For a park that covers barely even a square mile, there’s a lot packed in, from 8.5 miles of hiking opportunity split across a dozen different trails to historic plaques and a commemorative reconstruction of the San Francisco de Los Tejas Mission. This is a great stop for nature and history lovers. Warning: Bring a strong mosquito repellant, as they’re a frequent annoyance and become almost unbearable into the evening. Also, bring your own food if you’re staying for more than a few hours as there isn’t much on that front anywhere nearby.

Absolutely stunning we went right after the burn and I thought that was amazing. We could just barely see the new growth, but we could still smell. The fire is burning. There are some challenging trails that go up and down so you definitely get some elevation. We hiked it, but I would definitely love to go back and do a trail ride. Can’t wait to go back. I absolutely cannot wait to go back.

I took my baby kitten on her first overnight camping trip. She had a good time, she was frightened by the sounds of dogs barking nearby and chainsaws. Otherwise we had an excellent time on the trails and at the site.

Such a very unique park! We enjoyed the trails, the old log cabin, the mission, the cool things we found on the trail and the history surrounding this park. We spent about 4 good hours at the park going through all the buildings and the trails. It was really neat to read the history behind the El Camino Real and then to know that you were walking on the same road that so many others have before you! Such a great park to visit for a great "real life" science and history lesson. We will be back again to share with the kids!

Loved this place. Owners were very nice. Loved all the animals and $7 each to get in. Can't beat that for entertainment these days. We were in a small vehicle and they had ALOT of sand so one part where Buffalo were we didn't go down because didn't want to get stuck so next time we going in the truck!! Had a good time despite that one hurdle. Also be careful of the camel or he will take your cup food and all. 😆 We also went to the petting zoo. Of course the goats 🐐 wanted to chew on my clothes. 😆. We had a great time. Good place to bring kids. Also thank you to the owners for being so gracious. 5 stars 🌟!!

This place is a great place to visit. It’s only 7 a person. They give you a free cup of food per person. They have several different kind of animals. They don’t have any carnivores. All the animals will eat out of the cup. It’s not too big. They have a nice petting pen too. We’ll definitely come back again.

A wonderful experience! Lovely and welcoming service. We got the smallest bucket of food for feeding the animals since it was just 2 adults entering the Safari. If you have children I would recommend getting a bigger bucket of food. The animals come right up to you when they hear the food in the cup. Pretty large open area, with canopies for the animals to shelter from the sun that you can drive up to. Plus, they have baby Zebras and baby goats!! They do have a clean restroom with AC in there. They also have sinks to wash your hands after visiting the petting zoo with goats, llama, and a pig.

I made the two hour drive from Houston to visit this place because I thought it would be worth it and boy was I right! Never thought I'd touch a zebra, camel and or a Llama at all. Much less all of the same day, at same time while they were standing right next to each other. Drove around the property while in my car and the animals would come up to the car. This would be an awesome experience for kids or adults. After driving around property we went to the petting pen which we entered with food to pet and feed other animals. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Never thought I could get this experience in Texas much less 2 hours down the highway which was a really nice drive through some beautiful Hill country while the Autumn leaves fell from the tall pine trees. The admission price was only $12. How can you beat that? you would have to get on a plane and travel for many hours to come and contact with these type of animals. All animals were very friendly and a camel gave me a kiss on the cheek which was a priceless experience in my opinion. Highly recommend taking this trip.

Wow, what a great, fun place to visit on a road trip. The staff was over the top friendly and so were the animals. Go ahead and purchase the big food container. Great value

Tons of fun! It's only $7 a person for adults, and that includes a cup full of feed for the animals. You can buy extra food by the bucket (which we did) and that helps share the food love! There is also a petting area with tons of super cute goats as well as a small giftshop of super cute and great priced souvenirs! Loved the experience and i have been before and will probably come again.

It was a blast. Get a huge bucket of food because the cups are just not enough. The more food you have the longer it lasts. We got the $10 or $12 bucket of food and we were feeding for an hour. The staff is super friendly. Its clean. All the animals were in great health. There were deer, antelope, buffalo, emus, camels, zebras, big cows of all species, small furry cows and llamas. I'm probably forgetting some. They also have a petting zoo you can walk in. It has a huge turtle, turkeys, chickens, goats (two baby goats were just born and still had the umbilical cord), deer, baby pigs and again I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

AWESOME PLACE!!!!! At 1st I wasn't going to go but I'm very grateful I did. It was so fun. The kids had a blast. The animals come up to your car to feed and are very sweet. The petting zoo was awesome too. The little baby goats are sooooo cute.

This place is very well thought out and deep and in Local and early Texas history. The curator knows her stuff and I hope more people can come learn about the great people that made Texas what it is today.

A lot to take in about the history around the area. Betty was a wealth of information. Didn't have time for all of it, but we took advantage of the QR codes to access more. Worth the stop!

Awesome field trip! The tour guide was full of great insights and information. The kids were allowed to wander and carefully touch items while asking questions. Covers from the Pioneers of the area to Vietnam with documentation, relics, photos, antiques and recreations! Hands on History at its best!

The best small museum I've ever visited. The director, Betty, was of immense help in tracking down my Texas roots. She even found a cousin who still lives in Cherokee County. I highly recommend this museum.

Newly re-designed in 2014!! Exhibits are arranged in a very artistic and interesting way. There are one-of-a-kind artifacts throughout the museum. The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays, but private tours can be arranged during the weekdays. They also have a great Facebook page -- Heritage Center of Cherokee County, Texas. Hours and phone number is on the FB page. Very well organized and beautiful surroundings in historic downtown Rusk.

The Heritage Museum is definitely a must see when you visit Rusk! Even if you are local, it's worth re-visiting because there have been so many great displays added over the last several years.

Texas State Railroad - Rusk Depot

Train depot
Tours
An 1880s railway with vintage diesel & steam train rides, plus films & exhibits on its history.
Rode the train from Palestine to the Rusk Station, had a grand time walking down by the water and taking pictures in the lil covered bridge. Absolutely love the rail line as part of the sign at the entrance.

We loved our ride from Palestine to Rusk! Joyce is a wonderful tour guide who obviously loves her job. She’s a gem! She mentioned the train robbery experience- I sincerely hope yall will bring that back! I’d also love to see a murder mystery ride. I think that would be insanely fun. Regardless, we will be riding again!

Nice place. This was our turnaround place. It is a nice station. There is a nice gift store and place to buy food. The setting was lovely. There are plenty of picnic tables and a great lake.

We took the Pints in the Pines tour this past Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed the fascinating history and photos of the train depot in Palestine, Texas. There are several different cars with various classes of service. We were in the first class section and experienced a few issues, which we brought to the attention of the manager, Amy. She was very professional and an absolute pleasure to work with. Amy corrected the issues we mentioned and went above and beyond. I haven’t experienced customer service like this in quite some time. We learned a lot about the organization and the special dates of upcoming rides as well. We will definitely be back to enjoy the outstanding hospitality and service again. On a side note, the dinner that evening was good, and the live music added a great touch. A true gem of Texas

Decent easy afternoon. No real scenery just some trees real close while on train. Did the Rusk turntable run, the turntable was flooded out so that was a bust, but they offered discounts or return. Than on way back engine broke, another brought us back quickly. The staff onboard was fantastic with my kids points to Joyce! I stayed in the RV park, it was extremely empty and quiet, there was us and 1 other among 30+ spots. Everything was clean and kept up, but dated, showers had hot water, but the tall pines and quiet sure was worth it. Good RV park to stay a few days if your looking in area

The Texas State Railroad offers an amazingly beautiful round-trip, four-hour, 25-mile rail journey through the Piney Woods of East Texas from Rusk to Palestine, Texas. The train ride is very affordable, comfortable for all ages and offers fully enclosed passenger cars, open air passenger cars and snack bar. They also offer plenty of special events throughout the year, so be sure to check out their website for all of their latest events and train trips. The train tracks and rails that this railroad operates on were built by prison inmates in 1883. From time to time, they offer rides on one of their incredible steam engines. This is a close-up photo of the #28 steam engine that was captured at the Texas State Railroad located in Rusk, Texas. This photo reveals a powerful, gritty view of its massive iron wheels, slick with oil and streaked with soot. The connecting rods and pistons gleam with wear, frozen in a moment of motion, while steam hisses from nearby valves. Do you agree that this photo captured the raw mechanics and rugged beauty of industrial-age power? (The Train Tripper by Daily Vaca)

This trip was not something I would ever recommend to anyone. We booked the 509 with the bubble windows so we would have a great view. We had a good view alright - an hour & a half of nothing but Forrest & trees. We almost froze from the A/C and were told they couldn’t do anything about it. Everyone in the car was so cold we were afraid we would all get sick. The drink service was unbelievably slow and the snacks were mediocre. The attendants were nice but the trip was just miserable due to the temperature. Once we got to Rusk, the food was Ok but the picnic tables were worn out, there was almost nothing to see & some buildings were closed and/or abandoned and falling down. We froze again on the trip back. For the price (expensive), this is a total waste of time & money.

Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari

Wildlife and safari park
Nature & Parks
300-acre reserve with dozens of endangered & exotic species seen on self-guided drives.
This drive-thru safari was an incredible experience! Feeding the animals along the scenic paths was a highlight. The fallow and white-tail deer were gentle and eager, while the ostriches and camels brought excitement. The Highland cows and Zebras were a joy to see up close, and the sleek blackbucks added a touch of elegance to the adventure. The staff was friendly, the paths were well-maintained, and the overall setup made it easy to safely interact with the animals. Perfect for families and nature lovers—highly recommended!

We absolutely loved it! There is a risk for them scratching your car but that is too be expected. They are wild animals. Overall, we love it and our son had a blast.

This was so fun! We came here for the first time today, and everything was great. The staff was friendly, the little shop was cute, the toilets were clean - and most importantly, getting to see and interact with the animals was awesome. We are already looking forward to coming back and bringing some other family members with us.

Had a lot of fun feeding the animals. Some are super eager and will try to put their head in the vehicle. The camel took the entire bag. Lots of fun, lots of laughter. Was a great time with my fiance and her family. The zebras, camels, and cows will eat all the feed if you let them.

I’ve been wanting to go to this place for quite some time after my family had mentioned it and I finally went there very impressed. Love the animals, especially since you get to feed them.

Place is great. Just watch out for the camels. They are very smart and sneaky. Buy extra feed at gate it's worth it.
Paul C — Google review
This place is a lot of fun. The animals are very entertaining, however, these are semi wild creatures and they can cause damage to your vehicle and you release the Safari from any responsibility. The camel in particular can be aggressive. When we stopped feeding it and tried to drive away, it chased us. I had to stop because of tiny deer in front of me at which time the camel bit my tailgate and damaged my paint.

Had a great experience here. Drove around in my car, saw many animals too. Spent 2 hours on the drive. Took many pictures of animals that had as much fun as I did. Bought the grandkids all stuffed animals that were very unique,

Texas State Railroad in Palestine offers a great train ride experience for train lovers. With their very well maintained old-school train cars, it feels like traveling back in time. The area around is sublime with lush green forests, beautiful farms, it's something out of a movie. I took lots of beautiful photos and I enjoyed seeing the forests and fields. During the trip, there is food available and more food when arriving at Rusk, the stopping point before returning. I recommend pre-ordering the food with the ticket to minimize wait time. My only complaint would be the sound. There were many stories and facts being shared through the PA system. However, at least in the open car, the sound was too low so I couldn't hear much at all. Definitely book in advance, especially if you want to luxurious cars.

We did the train ride to Rusk. Supper cool! We were in the dome car. It gave such a great view. Our conductor Kelly was great! There is a recording that gives you some history of the different areas we went through. It was cool to do this with someone from the area because she had a lot of additional information. Honestly, it is a lot of trees, but I loved it. We had a nice fruit and veggie tray waiting at our seats. We also got complimentary champagne. There was food and drinks, both alcoholic and non available for purchase.

I had a fantastic and historically significant weekend with family and friends on The Texas State Railway in Palestine, Texas. Approximately 20 of us traveled from Houston, TX to Palestine, Texas to ride the TSR on 9/13 and were treated to champagne, apple cider, and a healthy snack during the train ride. Our host, Joyce, provided us with a comprehensive history lesson about the origins of the TSR and its decision to offer public tours. Additionally, a Caboose Restaurant was available for those who wished to dine during the one-hour layover. My group of 7 opted to stay at a charming Airbnb, The Hidden Gem Ruby Cottage, on 9/12 prior to the train excursion. It was truly a fantastic weekend!

Wow. Just wow. The views weren’t great, just the big thicket of trees and muddy creeks, but I would STILL go back. Joyce, our 82 year old train car attendant was beyond sweet. Her stories were adorable and her passion for her job is contagious. It was a truly delightful ride.

Great excursion. They need to provide this in the middle of the day and cater lunch. Return trip was all in the dark. We could have been in a tunnel the whole way back. We could not see anything. We thougbt we would be able to see the stars, but lights in the railcar prevented that. They need to change or upgrade their caterer. Pork chop was very thin. I thought grilled pork chop would be a thicker pork chop or at least two. Luckily, my wife got the chicken option which was the leg/thigh quarter and I ate half of her chicken. Dessert was cobbler, but the dough was still raw. I risked the food born illness and ate it anyway.

It's a train ride 1 hr to Rusk a picnic area with a lake lunch can be purchased in advance or at the Rusk depot. Spend a hr at Rusk then a hr ride back to palenstine. You mainly can view the trees on both sides of the train tracks a few openings of pasture was hoping for something more scenic . There is a bar with drinks and stacks available to purchase on the train.

Get tickets early and enjoy a trip on the Texas State Railroad. They have a variety of train cars and prices to choose from. Visit their website for ticket information. My mom and I enjoyed our champagne and snacks aboard the train. We had lunch at the Rusk Depot. Both the Palestine and Rusk depots have a gift shop. I thought Palestine had a bigger selection. Definitely worth doing.

Relaxing experience overall. My little boy was thrilled with the trains; he couldn’t get enough of the “choochoos”! The space was a bit tight, but not uncomfortably. Seats were comfortable, and most of the scenery was greenery, which made for a pleasant ride.

I've been wanting to stop here for years and today on our way to Lake Palestine was finally able to make that stop! I'm really glad we did!! My wife and I really liked the handmade baskets they make out of East Texas Pine in all sizes and all kinds of shapes!!! They make them round, square, Texas shaped, Longhorn Shaped, in all kinds of different colors. The folks are really friendly, and they also have a few antiques as well as home wares for your home and kitchen! We bought baskets of different sizes for our 6 year old to gather eggs from our chickens as well as baskets to put vegetables from our garden in. I have heard that they sometimes give factory tours, but no one said anything about it today while we were there. I've heard the company has been in business since 1919!!! A very long time and they still make what I would say is not only a nostalgic looking basket, but very well still usable in today's times!

**Truckers** I was a day late due to Walmart slow unloading. They loaded me on a Saturday. Takes about an hour. Getting in is tricky I went in the morning so no cars were in the way. As you cross the railroad make a wide first right. The dock is straight through the middle of the two buildings in a dead end. You have to wiggle yourself right into the dock making sure you don’t hit any overhead structures. Then back out the way you came in. The guys are cool and help you and watch that you don’t hit anything. I’ll come here again if the price is right.

Longtime wholesale customer, but have had an extremely bad experience this year. We ordered baskets to be filled with plants and resold. Without any prior notice, the company has been unable to fill the order. We have thousands of dollars of plants purchased and on site with no way to get them planted. All of the finished baskets were sold to our customers, who are furious with us. we added to our production facilities to raise the plants, and now have no use for that 6 figure investment. The salesman we deal with told me the owner would call to discuss this issue. Still waiting for the call. Bad business, and worse character.

Truckers Stop as soon as you cross the railroad and check in on the right, my dock was across the street on the left, easy backing and floor loaded in 3h. Everyone was really nice 🤙🏻

There was only 1 person working and she was friendly. We came so our son could see the production. It was 2pm and nothing fun nor exciting was happening here! The prices on the items in the store were laughable to say the least! We did purchase baskets made there. Everything else was very over priced! They had one very small planter for 65 bucks! It was flimsy and made in China on bottom. Just expected more in 2021 especially when baskets are taking off again.
Heather P — Google review
Since 1919, perfect stop for harvest baskets for your garden. All sizes and styles made from local pine. You can tour the factory too or an artisan will build a basket in front of you. We buy seconds with lids to stack for farm fresh produce and long term winter storage. Bulk discounts and farm exempt tax.

Mr Haberle was kind enough to show my dad, my sister and myself, around his factory and how the baskets were all made! It was fascinating and something we have been hoping to do for a very long time. He will never know how much his kindness and willingness to show us behind the scenes, really meant to us! Thank you, Sir!

Nature & Parks
Davey Dogwood Park is a huge and beautiful park with plenty of picnic tables and picturesque views. However, some visitors found the trails to be poorly marked, making it difficult to navigate. Despite this, the park offers lovely woodland walks and a fairy trail. While some visitors were disappointed by the lack of dogwood trees during their visit in March, others enjoyed the park's beauty during fall and are looking forward to returning for more exploration.
Love the lookout during sunrise. The Pavillion area is very big for lots of activity's. Big grassy areas for dogs/kids/outdoor games. There is also a covered Pavillion and indoor restrooms. The picnic tables are very private and clean.

Once you go through the entrance, you have a bit of a drive on a one lane road to get to the campsites and hiking trails. Once there, the park is hugh and a lot of trails. They had this cute one called the Fairy Garden Trails. It had different Fairy like things around the trees. Super cute!

Very beautiful park over a small mountain with forest around . It was late March and everything is green. There are many Dogwoods with beautiful white flowers, pure and very unique. The park is small but no crowds and very clean and quiet. A nice place for a family weekend out for picnic!
Yriver — Google review
Very nice park. We hiked trail #1 and enjoyed it. The restrooms were very clean and kept in very good condition. The suggestion I have for the park is to do more to mark the trails better. Perhaps that could become a project for a Scout working to earn his/her Eagle Scout designation??
Dave B — Google review
Huge and beautiful park for lots of relaxation! Lots of picnic tables for eating and picture worthy views. Only downside to the park is that the trails are not easily marked and can be quite tricky to find if you’ve never been. Once found they are nice. We also did not find many maps of the park which again makes it a little difficult to figure out where you are at and where the trails are. But overall a really lovely park with lots of land to walk!! Side note- We didn’t see very many Dogwood trees, as we were expecting tons! Hence the name. But we might have been a bit too early in March for them ):
Taylor H — Google review
Today we enjoyed walking around looking at all the interesting fairy gardens. The dogwoods were still in bloom this weekend March 30th but we expected more. The previous week was probably in full bloom before the rain knocked off some of the blooms. Our March 9th visit had very few dogwoods blooming but the redbud trees were pretty. I didn't see any redbuds today.

Amazing museum filled with so many artifacts regarding the New London school explosion in 1937, as well as the rebuilding of the school and subsequent reunions and memorials. Memorials. The museum is run by volunteers who are so well versed in the history as they have lived here all their lives and the tour was absolutely educational and very interesting. If you're at all familiar with the explosion, this is a must visit.
Dawn — Google review
This is an East Texas hidden gem! The museum is amazing, capturing the horror of that terrible day of Thursday afternoon, 18 March 1937. It wonderfully presents the school, the event, and life in the late 1930s. They have a great deal of high school memorabilia and items that reflect on early-mid 20th Century Americana. The greatest highlight to this place for me is the soda fountain! Yes--an actual, honest-to-goodness, working, operational soda fountain! For decades I've been looking to find a functioning soda fountain that served Coca-Cola. Our family visited a "soda fountain" in Galveston and what they meant was that the building/restaurant used to be a soda fountain--they had a regular machine found at most fast food restaurants, which was very disappointing. We were in New London picking up a package and was a little lost since Google and Apple Maps sometimes have difficulty with addresses. I pulled off the road right into their parking lot to make contact when I looked at the building and saw the words, "museum and soda fountain." I instantly looked for their hours and saw that they were opening soon. We made our pick up and headed back to the museum. A very friendly and hospitable volunteer greeted us and welcomed us in, showing us around the place. After going through the museum, we made our way back to the soda fountain counter. My boys were more interested in *this* part of the museum more than the museum itself. We sat down and all ordered Cokes. I didn't know exactly what I was going to get, but it was so much fun watching him pump the syrup into the classic-shaped Coca-cola green-tinted glass. I was so delighted and filled with joy as I took my first sip. They have Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Barqs Root Beer, and Dr. Pepper. They have cherry, strawberry flavors to tweak your drink. A drink includes one free refill. They sell Blue Bell ice cream and make floats, milkshakes/malts, and sundaes. They have meals for lunch with daily specials. If you're interested in history and nostalgia, you will thoroughly enjoy the London Museum & Cafe. At the time of this review admission to the museum is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

A friend took me here and I was not disappointed. The food is delicious. So very reasonably priced too. The special that day was meatloaf, and it was flavorful and delicious. They have the old kind of soda where they add the syrup to the carbonated water. It is so good and tasty. I didn't have time to visit the museum that I will next time. I had their pecan pie with bluebell vanilla ice cream and it was divine. We'll definitely come back and definitely recommend.

A small town in Texas that had a very tragic accident that happened in 1937 is chronicled in this museum. This tragic accident changed the entire world. The museum will take anybody who visits it to the day of the school explosion. You will not only see the aftermath, but you will feel what people felt in the town, the county, the state, and the entire world. This museum is very definitely a "must see". You will be moved.

We had a group of 8 guys take a weekend trip this past weekend and everything was perfect. The course was in great shape especially for December and the Double Eagle accommodations were outstanding. In addition, everyone we interacted with from the pro shop, bar/grill, and beverage carts were as nice and accommodating as they come. Tiffany made it extremely easy to book our stay and tee times. We came with 8 and after a few pictures of the course and lodges we already have 16 guys for next year. Great resort and course!

Not a bad course it does need some work. The greens was fast which is awesome the maintenance was decent (they was working on improving it) and the main thing is the cart path do need a lot of work. The pro shop was decent it was more on the basic side. The bar and grill area was decent size a bit dated in that area. The cart girl was great she made good drinks and a good outfit.

One of my favorite courses in Texas. The course is always in wonderful condition and the accommodations make for great weekend getaways. Well worth the drive. Every time I leave, I'm counting down the days until I go back... which reminds me, it's time again!
Rob L — Google review
Course itself was very fun and mostly well maintained. A few deadspots on some of the greens which is a bad look for a $160 round. Had first tee time at 7am and there were no range balls available to warm up with until after we teed off. Told we needed to check with the starter but wasn’t there until after our scheduled tee time. They had us not hit our approach shot onto the first hole because they had not changed the pin location and had us wait to do that. Seemed very poorly managed although beautiful course. Absolutely not worth the money to play in my opinion and did not live up to expectations unfortunately. Not planing on coming back.

Great conditions, very fun layout. One of my favorite courses. Made for a great bachelor trip weekend! Staff did great even through a tough weekend of weather.

Great experience coming up for a Wednesday/Thursday quick trip. We were one of a handful of groups on the entire course. Challenging tee shots, fast greens, and excellent bunkers. We stayed in the two bedroom condo off 18 green, outdated but if you are just going to drop off bags and sleep it is adequate. All the staff were nice and accommodating. Loved all the Branded Bill hats. PSA. Someone in group should stay sober so you can drive into Palestine to eat dinner (we went to Pint and Barrel Drafthouse but there are lots of options) since the restaurant closed before we were ready to eat dinner.

Review is for the condition. Played this course a few years ago and it was in great condition. Wanted to play it again as im visiting. Played it today and I can honestly say I’m throughly disappointed in the condition it was in. Tee boxes were atrocious. Extremely tight lies to hit iron or wedge shots. This course is not worth the 139.00 that was paid to play today. With that kind of rate I expect a lot more out of course conditions and not dog track course conditions.

Our DFW-based golf league played our 10th annual 3-day Ryder Cup style event out at Pine Dunes in early November. The weekend was off the charts. The course was in unbelievable shape for November. It helped that we had perfect weather, but conditions were great. Staff was extremely helpful, not just on the weekend itself, but for months leading up to the event management worked with us to get everything how we wanted it. For the price, Pine Dunes can't be topped. We can't wait to get back out there!

Food & Drink
Kiepersol Winery is a farm-based establishment that offers wine tasting, spirits distillery, gourmet gifts, and a restaurant. Visitors can also opt to stay in their bed-and-breakfast accommodations. The winery boasts an excellent host who expertly explains the different wine and food pairings during presentations, leaving guests with unforgettable experiences. The family-owned winery provides ample parking and has an open atmosphere that welcomes all visitors.
Mix and match wine/spirits tasting for 20$. Kevin was respectful and accommodating. Excellent peaceful place to relax and unwind. Barrel no 33 was by far the best of the tasting: velvety, fruit on the nose, smooth, and delicious. Jimmys 10year is the oldest bourbon in Texas, 128.1 proof, and rich in color. Flavor was complex, warm, and rich. Definitely would return. Indoor and outdoor seating. The Italian sandwich with pesto, with salami, pepperoni and cheese was 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 not to mention perfectly crisp.

Very laid back atmosphere and great service. Quite the selection of cocktails. The Old Cuban was surprisingly delicious, but the brandy, served neat, missed the mark for me.

We went on a girls night out and had such a great time. This place is so beautiful. The staff was so sweet and so helpful on helping us pick the perfect drinks, and they were incredible. The atmosphere was amazing, we sat outside and it was perfect, but they do have a beautiful inside area. We ordered a light snack, but they do offer food. We were dressed very casual and so were most people, but it is a place where you could dress up. I would highly recommend this place.

If you haven't visited the Grand Room and taken a tour... you are missing out!! What a wonderful afternoon we had with Marnelle as our guide through the history of Kiepersol, the winery, the distillery, then topped off with a tasting of wines and spirits. Right here in our backyard is a Fabulous place to find your Zen... to discover wine and purely relax. Marnelle was joined by Emily in the Grand Room and their service, knowledge and passion for the wines is amazing. We will be back... again and again! I'd give 10 stars if I could!! Delicious wines and spirits... excited to be in the Club!

Kiepersol is amazing!! The wines are top notch, and their spirits are wonderful. The restaurant serves expertly prepared steaks. However, the best part is they truly care about each & every person who visits. They are the BEST winery/distillery in East Texas. 😍😍😍

We decided to die in here for their lunch and let’s just say it was amazing. Starting off the service our servers name was Grady and he was excellent. He exploited us a little bit about the history of the winery and distillery and also told us about the tours and tasting experiences they do. All our food came out in a timely manner, and Grady recommended to me a delicious wine called fruition which we also ended up buying a bottle of it at discounted price to go. My fiancé got the Cuban, which was an amazing Greek with their own rum as well. We ordered the bakery as an appetizer and it was amazing cranberry sauce paired well. A complementary bread was great. The presentation was great and I ordered the chicken Kiepersol that was amazing and crispy as well as you could taste the herbs that marinated the chicken. They ordered the filet mignon burger with sautéed onions, medium rare, and it was cooked perfectly. Overall 10/10 experience, food, service, and affordability.

American Freedom Museum

Museum
Specialty Museums
Museum tracing American military heritage with artifacts & equipment from the 1700s to the present.
I visited this place about three weeks ago. I really loved this museum. It shows so much of our history and, in my opinion, does a very good job of honoring our brave service men and women and their sacrifice for our wonderful Nation! The motorcycle ride there (from Dallas) was very good (back roads). The museum is very clean, and the collection is impressive (there's even a UH-1 "Huey" inside the building), the collection ranges from before the Revolutionary War all the way to our modern military. If you like presidential memorabilia, they have a signed item from every president (and other artifacts). The people who work in the museum are extremely polite and knowledgeable. I had a great time and will be returning, Lord willing with my family so they can enjoy it too.

We had the best experience at the American Freedon Musuem. The memorial wall is awesome and definitely stirred some emotions in my Somalia and Panama army veteran husband and myself. The hall of the presidents is very impressive with a signature of every us president since Washington. We only made it halfway thru the US history part before we ran out of time ,but we will definitely be going back to finish soon. It is a learning/teaching museum and totally free for veterans. A must when in east TX.

What a wonderful place to visit. I went here with my family and my uncle, who is an army veteran of the Vietnam War. I learned so much going through this museum. There was so much to see and so many displays.

This is a must visit museum in East Texas. Not too big, but 2 great exhibits—- war timeline and Hall of Presidents! Well done. Thank you so much!

This little gem is located on the campus of Brook Hill School in Bullard, Texas. The museum itself has two different areas, a presidential hall and a military American Freedom section which starts with the American Revolution to the Freedom we have today. The museum charges a minimal entrance fee. Spent several hours looking at the exhibits and reading the information. Emphasis is also on the history of the local area which you would not get at a larger museum.

Incredible museum of American history. We took our 13 year old grandson and he loved it as well. We spent 2.5 hours there and could've stayed longer. We'll be going back.

Incredible gem of a museum. Plan for several hours at least, if you want to see everything. Lots of original weapons and even vehicles and aircraft.

We had the best time zip lining! We were looking for an adventure for my son’s 14th birthday when I found this. Booked for 9 people, ages ranging from 10 - 65 years. Everyone was so helpful and the guides were great! We had a couple people in our group that are afraid of heights, but thanks to the guides and feeling safe the whole time, everyone had a blast. If you’re thinking of going, do it! And do the whole 9 lines. Totally worth it! My son had a wonderful time on his birthday.

This was an epic day! The guys helping are so nice and so knowledgeable. We felt safe and had an absolute blast! We had the privilege of taking our 85 year old friend to check off a bucket list item. The staff treated her like a queen! I can't wait to go back. Bonus: the views are INCREDIBLE!

This place is a hidden gem! The owner Heith made our visit a pleasant experience. We went to the place after making a reservation with 5 and 7 year old kids and Heith was so accommodating to everything he could so that our kids get experience zip lining. The views are amazing and highly recommend this place (especially if you are staying at the Piney Wood Cabins). This was our first time trying Zip Lining and we had a great time.

My husband and I had a great experience and the staff was very friendly! Forgive me but I can't remember the lady's name but she took our photos and was the sweetest out of the bunch. Carson was a hoot! Great conversation on the porch. The younger gentleman Christian was very kind and talkative. Recommended Twisted Root Burger in Athens (Thanks dude it was awesome!) And finally shootout to our 4 legged friend Woody! When we come back, we'll be sure to bring you and your buddy a new toy. Thanks yall!

This place was amazing. The staff God bless the owners. They are the sweetest, most kindhearted people I have never met, so patient, makes you feel like home, safety is their number 1 goal. So if you happen to be in Dallas and looking for adventures please by all means make your way there and you will thank me. Amazing fun zipline it was. Love love them.

Such a great experience all around. Not just the fun but the people who runs it and the owner. We had a great time with the family meeting other group as well. First of all the view is stunning. They are the highest point in East Texas. Soak in the view when you are there. Lots of shade and a huge front porch to hangout as well. If you are going in the summer, pick the earliest time. They have everything you need. If you are going to video, bring your camera with its mount. They have GoPro mount but be sure to bring all the parts with you. If you have a large group, call and ask if you can have a snack or picnic by bringing your own food. This is a great place for family or groups or any kind of celebration. Highly recommended this.
