We stopped in during our hike from Big Bay State Park and had a quick picnic in the shelter. Really nice! It looks like there are a bunch of nice camping spots there in the boardwalk down to the beach is spectacular!

Beautiful beach! The sand was great and there was plenty of beach to spread out. The water was shallow for at least 20 feet which was super nice.
Stephanie R — Google review
Camped there on site 28. The campgrounds are nice. There wasn't much for mosquitoes but lots of fly. Site 28 was right by the main office building. The sites there has its own parking spot. Office hours are open from 8-4. If you check in after hours they have a list of incoming campers listed on the office door. Bathroom does have quite a bit of bugs. The showers were a little on the down side. They do have one shower for family/wheelchair accessible. Showers are on the pricey side per min. During our 4 day stay there we didn't see the host at all.
Bao Y — Google review
Very scenic views, nice beach, interesting lagoon, and well-maintained boardwalks. Suggested donation is $3/person/day, which is a small contribution to enjoy this amazing, peaceful scenery. Highly recommended.
Corrie D — Google review
We camp here every year now with a group of friends and we always have the best experience. Love making memories in this wonderful place. Bathrooms are nice, camp hosts are super helpful and friendly, and the access to the beach just can't be beat. My favorite place to camp, by far.
Brittni D — Google review
We spent a lovely night in the beautiful campground, a little rain on our tent, but not too bad. Grab it yourself wood always available. Bathroom not too far and water nearby. The best part was the beach in the bay the next morning. It was gorgeous! Thankfully it was a very hot day, so the very cold Lake Superior water was refreshing.
Jamie — Google review
Love this place. Dog friendly. Beautiful beach. The opportunity to rent a canoe was the highlight of the stop.

Visiting Big Bay Town Park on Madeline Island was an experience that surpassed all my expectations. This park is a true hidden gem, offering a serene escape into nature's embrace. The park's natural beauty is simply breathtaking. From the lush, green trails that are perfect for a peaceful hike, to the stunning views of the lake, every corner of Big Bay Town Park is a testament to the beauty of the great outdoors. The tranquility of the area is something that photos just can't capture fully; it’s something you have to experience in person. One of the highlights for me was the sandy beach. It's a perfect spot for a relaxing day by the water, whether you're looking to swim, sunbathe, or just enjoy the scenic views. The water was crystal clear and refreshing, providing a delightful respite on a sunny day. The park is also well-maintained, which speaks volumes about the dedication of the staff and the community to preserving this natural wonder. The facilities, including picnic areas and restrooms, were clean and convenient, adding to the overall positive experience. For those who love camping, the park offers a great camping experience with well-spaced sites that allow for privacy while still being close to the natural attractions of the area. In conclusion, Big Bay Town Park is a must-visit for anyone looking for a peaceful retreat into nature, a family outing, or just a day away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It’s a place that offers a blend of relaxation, adventure, and scenic beauty. I can't wait to return and explore more of what this beautiful park has to offer.

Big Bay State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Scenic park on Madeline Island with a Lake Superior beach & 7 miles of hiking & nature trails.
Pretty nice state park with clean trails. There are many overlook areas that offer great views. Wish we had come earlier in the year, the water looked tempting for a swim!
Ariel S — Google review
Beautiful State Park. The bathroom facilities were clean and well kept. The campground was really well spaced out each site could use a little more tent space but very nice. Biggest bummer was that there was so few dog friendly hiking trails and no beach access for the pups on hot days. Most other places have a dog friendly beach area for families to enjoy.
Krista K — Google review
Very good experience. You get to take a ferry from Big Bay to Madeline Island. Cool little town and a beautiful island. Stay a couple of days if you want to explore. Beaches are closed to dogs, didn't really see any dog friendly beaches at all.
RobS — Google review
It's really the only worthwhile place of interest on Madeline Island worthy of the time and expense of taking a ferry to the island as a tourist. The trails along the coastline were breathtaking. It was also worthwhile to take the boardwalk to the beach and to the bog area. There is just over 1 mile of boardwalk along the coastline. You can walk on a beautiful, level improved path along the coastline for 4 miles one way. One side has turnouts viewing the coastline and the other side is wooded. However, parking areas are situated so you do not need to walk the entire distance there and back to see the highlights. I totally recommend this to be part of your trip to the Apostle Islands. You do need a WI state park pass. So if going to Copper Falls on your way to Apostle Islands, get the annual pass so you can take in Big Bay State Park. Plan on at a very minimum 4 hours to take the ferry there and back and to go on the trails.
Beverly K — Google review
Beautiful State Park with a great campground, an easy and gorgeous lakeside trail, and other good trails, too. Great place to stay on Madeline Island while touring the Apostle Islands.

Love Madaline Island, and Big Bay town park campground is great! Nice clean bathrooms and showers. If you stay at site 28, you are close enough to the office to receive wifi. Perfect for the kiddos tablet at bedtime! Highly recommend!!
Renee — Google review
Such a fantastic place to slow down and appreciate nature! The park has nice bathrooms and the ability to fill your water.

Copper Falls State Park

Mentioned on

Nature & Parks
Park
Copper Falls State Park in Wisconsin is a year-round nature retreat offering stunning views of ancient lava flows, deep gorges, and spectacular waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hunting, fishing, biking, and swimming. The park features wide trails with picturesque spots to take in the sights, along with amenities like playgrounds, shelters, picnic areas, and a swimming beach. Additionally, there are hiking trails and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
A beautiful park the trails are well-maintained and easy to hike but challenging in areas, climbing multiple stairs and decks to viewing areas. Seeing the multiple waterfalls converge into each other and the educational plaques was wonderful. We only visited for the day but plan on coming back because the campsite looked like it would be a great experience. The gift shop had a lot of great memorabilia and on hot summer days having ice cream was wonderful. There are a couple of out houses on the trails that make it easy when you have children hiking with you.
Samantha M — Google review
This is a beautiful park. We very much enjoyed hiking here. The forest was enchanting. The river and waterfalls were quite the sight. I think it would be nice if they maintained a couple trails to the waterfalls. There is a spot or two where you can get to the water. I very much recommend this park. It is quite popular given how remote it is, but it is well worth the trip.
Brad C — Google review
This is the best state park i have been to. The views are top-notch. You won't be disappointed. I came all the way from Indiana to visit this beautiful place. The trails are nice. I took my 6 mouth old in the stroller and was able to do it with some help from my spouse. So you can definitely take kids of all ages to see this beautiful place.
Christopher C — Google review
Copper Falls State Park is beautiful! We enjoyed our time here doing a few hikes and seeing the beach. To be honest, the star of the show is Brownstone Falls and the Cascades; due to mining a hundred years ago, Copper Falls has collapsed over time and now is far less impressive than Brownstone and the Cascades. However, Copper Falls is still impressive. There are a lot of trails, but honestly the Doughboys Loop is the whole point of the park; most of the other trails are just walks through the woods. The observation tower is overgrown around so all you can see is tree tops but it’s still pretty. Red Granite Falls is unique because you can walk up to it and climb on it (the Cascades and Brownstone and Copper Falls are all, understandably, very fenced around and blocked off), but the trails to Red Granite is just a walk through the woods. Also? The gift shop is stellar. We really liked it even though it’s pretty small. They had great staff there too. Overall, go to Copper Falls state park for a good walk through some woods, and a few very impressive waterfalls!

Beautiful Wisconsin State Park , probably one of the busiest I've been to and I can see why this place is awesome the falls are great just an all around good experience in this place lots of parking places available , bathrooms all around the park , the hiking trails are well marked and well maintained lots and safety fencing . Plenty of picture opportunities and birdwatching spots too if you want to see the fall colors the observation tower is the best spot for that all in all a great park to visit especially if you're doing the waterfall loop . (This is a state park so there is a fee to get in $3 all the way to $50 )
Erik S — Google review
Gorgeous waterfall and river scenery along well maintained hiking trails. Plenty of lookouts to take photos and rest along the way. The Doughboy trail was beautiful. Enjoyed Loon Lake views as well. State Park near Mellon WI, not far from gas and convenience stores. No dogs allowed on the doughboy trail.
K H — Google review
I went September 12th and there was no mosquitos, the park was awesome! The look out tower was a waste of time, I couldn't see anything over the trees. There is a few stairs so it's not for people in poor physical shape. The stone stairs and walls are beautiful and the falls were small but unique and fun. It's very comparable to Amnicon but I liked Amnicon better since I could crawl on the rocks.
Everlasting L — Google review
Beautiful park to visit and camp in. The campground is set up in loops which was nice to let our kids ride their bikes. Campsites were not overly private, but there was a good distance between them. The hikes to the waterfalls involve a good amount of elevation change and stairs so be prepared for a strenuous hike, but trails are well maintained and easy to hike.

Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort

Nestled in Upper Michigan near the Michigan and Wisconsin border, Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort offers a fantastic snowy vacation experience. The resort provides a range of lodging options, from luxurious condo units to ski-in, ski-out chalets, all equipped with essential amenities like cable TV and free WiFi. For skiing enthusiasts of all levels, the resort offers numerous slopes, chair lifts, rentals, and even skiing lessons to help beginners get started.
Big Powderhorn Mountain was my first UP of Michigan ski experience. I must say, it truly is lived up to its slogan, "Real memories are created Up North". In the two days of skiing the famous Lake Superior Lake Effect snowfall, we truly made some real memories. What they do well: 1) Snow! Not a snowmaking gun in site, all natural snow, great texture with both powder and groomed runs 2) Customer service! Front desk staff, lift operators, servers, we didn't run into anyone who wasn't friendly and good at their job. 3) Facilities! The chalet is a welcomed upgrade from my normal Twin Cities depilated chalets. Modern, clean, warm. 4) Lots of variety and nice vertical drop. It's vertical is a 2x to 2.5x most Midwest ski hills. 5) Views! What needs some help: 1) Around 1/3 of the mountain was closed 2) Check in for lite tickets is a little strange. Tip: Make sure to sign up on line beforehand. 3) Size. It definitely beats anything near me, but if it were to expand to the 300-400 acre range, I would venture a guest it would start to rival as the best on the Midwest. Overall, lovely place to ski!
Matt L — Google review
*save time by making an account online. This will make everyone's lives easier and get you out on the mountain faster. Great ski resort. Lots of powder and no ice. Conditions were prime. The only complaint was the terrain park was closed even though the daily reports say they are both open. I mentioned it to ski patrol and they got it open but I was leaving by the time they did. The terrain park was also pretty small.

Definitely recommend checking them out! They have a variety on really nice hills and the staff are very friendly. They also have a wide selection of food, snacks, and drinks for a really reasonable price!! There is a bar as well that we did not check out. My boyfriend and I both agreed we would come back for snowboarding. If you are a first timer, I highly recommend going online and making an account; add everything required before getting in the lift ticket line, we did this and our process went very efficient for everyone. Wonderful experience all around!
Malia H — Google review
Cozy lodge with several food options and windows to see out to the hill. You can carry snacks in or buy them there. Alex, the bartender up on the third floor was very sweet and welcoming. Tickets and rentals were painfully slow even on a (not at all busy) Monday morning. I can't imagine a weekend. Staff had difficulty navigating the computer systems and didn't seem to be all that knowledgeable. Listened to all of Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd plus 4 other songs while waiting for tickets. Definitely buy tickets online if you can. The guy at the rental counter couldn't have been less helpful. No eye contact, no smile, no answer to my question, just a robot. Awful and very slow experience. Prices were too high based on the quality of service at ticket and rental counters. Parking lot was in very poor condition with pot holes everywhere. Signage to tickets and rentals was unclear. Good hill, but could certainly use some sprucing up.
Hillary J — Google review
Excellent ski resort..our family loved it here! My grandkids were both first time 🎿 skiing and the staff here was accommodating slowing the lift as they got on and off, making sure the kids were taken care of..the place was perfect for beginners to advanced skiing. A food option was nice to have...and a gift shop for memories to take home.
Kathryn H — Google review
Nice outdoor firepit. Outdoor bar. Beer was $6 for a top shelf can which I'm good with! We didn't ski but it was fun to hang out; loved it. We do skis and watch how nice the hills were to ski on while enjoying our cocktails by the warm fire pit. Other people skiing said it was great!
Michael T — Google review
Visiting all three hills in the area, Powderhorn is the nicest facility. Lunch was quite a bit cheaper than the other two. Only truly ski in/out lodging in the area. Some of the runs are a little flat for me but the glade runs on the right side of the mountain were pretty fun. Will definitely be back. Would be nice if they had winter camping spots. Was nice we could ski right to the parking lot and got lucky with a front spot for the van.
Colin C — Google review
Had good snow late season. All the staff were great. Very polite from the cafeteria to ski patrol to lift operators. During my stay I didn't run into one bad attitude. Runs were groomed well from top to bottom. Had fresh snow coming down that added to everything. Beautiful scenery and great runs.

Copper Peak, located in the Upper Peninsula, is home to the world's largest artificial ski jump. Visitors can reach the top via an 810-foot chairlift and an 18-story elevator lift. The viewing platform at the summit offers a breathtaking 40-mile panoramic view of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Canada. On clear days, visitors can witness ski jumping teams from various countries soaring over the hill.
Wonderful experience, I will say I’m super afraid of heights but I still made it all the way up with the help of my boyfriend! Scary yet thrilling experience, and I definitely recommend it to you!
Sadie F — Google review
Wow, a must see. We bought the tickets up the chair-lift and elevator. You still have to climb over grates and stairs to the very top. But sooooo worth it! A little scary at first, but you can't beat the view. Absolutely stunning. I didn't want to leave.
Kerri C — Google review
Amazing views, chairlift ride was fun! Hubby went to the very top, I couldn’t because the stairs up are grates that you can see allllll the way down through. But I highly suggest you come here!! On a clear day, you can see across Lake Superior to Canada!!
Kathleen K — Google review
Very cool and unique experience. Follow the signs don’t follow the Google directions. Parking was very easy. A slight walk (40yards) to the ski lift from the office/parking area.
Cody — Google review
It was a PERFECT weather day to see the fall views and the experience was a two hour waste of time. First off the 30+ min wait to get on the chair lift was too long but after a 5 min decent ride up we were presented with a long line to go up the elevator to the top of the ski jump ramp. However the line never moved. There was no communication and after waiting for another 45 min many started to leave. There was a coupe of guys that seemed to be working on the elevator but no communication. Finally one announced it was shut down. We then endured another 10 min minimum wait to get down the lift (many walked down the hill). Then another 30 minute wait to get a refund. They did issue a refund but the lack of communication and professionalism left us leaving hoping all would second guess the trust they place in this service and the people that work there. On top of it all they kept selling tickets for people to go up when the lift ride was a very little part of what should be the full experience of being able to view the sites from the ski jump ramp. Completely wasted 2 hour experience. Thank goodness the weather was enjoyable and the people in line around us were lovely. Even if it worked, I would suggest a decent view from Mt Zion Lookout for free instead. I rarely do a negative review but this one deserves it.
Sandy E — Google review
Visited Oct 11 and the elevator to the jump was out so $20 lift ticket. Unique experience and history to look into thought there was lots of construction. Can’t way to see what it’ll be like in 3-5 years when it’s functional.
Lydia — Google review
Very cool! Riding the chairlift was an experience I haven't had in probably 45 years. View was amazing! Little bit of a jaunt. People with bad knees should pass on this.
Janie U — Google review
In a word, AMAZING! The views, the exposure, the height, the engineering, the idea that people actually ski fly! Go the the top and you will not be disappointed!

I love exploring the Ottawa. I almost never see anyone out here, both because it is so large and because I get out to so many random corners that I wouldn't see people in anyway. There's always something new to find, and every time it delivers. I'm glad the National Forest holds this land for everyone to enjoy.

The Presque Isle River, located within the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park's Presque Isle Unit, offers a rustic campground with stunning views of Lake Superior. Visitors can easily access the spectacular waterfalls, cascades, and rapids of the river by hiking along the East and West River Trails. Additionally, it is recommended as a great biking spot due to its scenic and accessible nature.
The suspension bridge view was amazing and all the textures in the river formed over time was just stunning
Samuel R — Google review
The best part is the overlook from the suspension bridge. The kettles in the falls are simply amazing. You can see varying features of the falls and river depending on the water level and flow. Start at the very back parking lot and work your way forward. This is definitely the place where you want to est dessert first, because these are the crown jewels of the Presque Isle River. When trying to arrive here, put in the suspension bridge for correct directions. These are a heavily visited area, so be prepared for crowds and people. Dogs are allowed on the trails with leases. Loved it!! There is a small display of taxidermy animals as well as skulls and furs. There a are also a few live turtles and reptiles. Loved the eagles nest you could walk up to as well. They also have lots of trails as well some of the informational signs need repaired but the trails are very well marked.
Stephanie V — Google review
They gave a GREAT demonstration of native vs nonnative plants on another lake. The facily is filled with educational info. The center has LOTS of labeled plants and bird info on the beautiful trails. The family day was wonderful. We went daily in the trails duringbour week here. The young biologists were truly dedicated to making our lakes healthy. Thanks!!!!!! Attached are some of the amazing nature we saw. Green frog, mushroom eaten by maybe turtle, spittlebugs, Canada lily, chalk-fronted corporal dragonfly, lupine, meadow anemone, blueberry, ninebark, pale beauty, painted turtle left the lake to lay eggs, white admiral...
Joseph B — Google review
Always a nice place to explore the northwoods. I usually walk along the lakeside to the observation deck/tree and turn back. Sometimes I come during winter and rent skis or snowshoes and hike in the snow.

This place is awesome. Start at the Nook and check out the turtles, bats, skulls, etc. Give a bit of cash, we left $5 initially but after we visited the lake and paddled out in the free canoe with my daughters using free push-button rods from the classroom to catch the biggest bluegill I've ever seen we went back and added another $20 to the donation box. The swimming dock is brand new and beautiful, the bottom is sandy and the floating platform is great. They have maybe 8 large canoes, 2 sit-on-top kayaks and a single sit-inside yak. They also have a paddle boat that was a ton of fun.

Lake of the Torches Resort Casino

Subdued rooms & suites in a waterside venue with a 24-hour casino, a convention center & dining.
The front staff were so nice, cleaning crew also very accommodating. The rooms are very nice, we overlooked the parking lot but it was still nice to look out and see the frost on the cars in the morning and watch the snow coming down. The lobby is so nice to relax in and with the casino just a short walk down the hallway, what more could you ask for. We also had the buffet one evening and for breakfast on morning. Great selections and again the wait staff were for friendly
Judy B — Google review
My biggest gripe is actually about the restaurant and the service at the bar of woodys. We specifically looked up menus on the website, got here and was informed it was an hour wait. No problem, put our name in, stayed close and gambled. 45 min later we conveniently get a text saying they're ready to seat us. Fantastic! Get there, no one greets us. I ask, they're like, oh yeah a host will be with you. Guy arrives after a short wait, is the least welcoming host in service history ever (coming from someone who has waitressed, plenty of yrs btw). He walks off without saying a word. I assume we're supposed to follow him, so we do. I notice he doesn't pick up menus. Takes us all the way to a back table as far away from the exit as possible (when my mom's disabled), then kinda fusses when he realizes the 2 person table that's practically on top of the buffet is not enough space for her mobility scooter. It's after he places the silverware on the table and informs us that "plates are at the buffet" ... that I'm like, wait, it's buffet ONLY!?! "Oh yeah, our kitchen was closed today, so no menu" a passing by server said. My mom's had bariatric surgery, I never have a "buffet" appetite, and for $35, are yall really serious!?! Ugh... so we ended up at woodys "bar and grill" ... the bar is separate, the grill is only fried foods and walk up, order, come back collect your own food set up. The food was fine for fried food. Guy who took the order was a bit slow, but pleasant and trying his hardest. Older blonde haired woman at the bar just needs to retire because it's very clear she can't stand her job, acted like I was the biggest inconvenience on the face of the earth. Drinks are $$$$ - 4 crown n cokes later i had spent $50+ - Watersmeet would nevvver. About the only highlight was the lounge over by the hotel area. The man bartending was so sweet, drinks were still pricey, but his single pours about matched the double pours at Woodys (because that lady was sooooo not double pouring, those were singles ma'am. If you cant eye ball it, then use a shot glass. Or let the guy in the lounge show you what a double pour over ice looks like because he nailed it) ...and he didn't act like he couldn't wait for me to leave like the woman at woodys, which always helps. If they added some light, fresh appetizers at the Lounge, I'd just go there and never leave. Bottom line, service means everything and their bartenders at woodys and hostesses at the restaurant aren't cutting it. I'll likely never return here because of it, even tho we did get a bit lucky and had fun at the slots before it took what it gave us back.

We had a wonderful time at this hotel. We aren't real serious gamblers, and we don't eat a lot of food at one time, but if you are big eaters, the buffets are to die for. And the pool area is well maintained, and the hot tub is luxurious. Everyone was so kind and helpful. We originally booked this hotel because of its proximity the Little Bohemia Supper Club, but we never got there. It was too nice at the casino to leave. We wouldn't hesitate to book again.

Arrived for a two night stay only to find out the casino was going to be closed from 11:00 PM - 8:00 AM. Very disappointed!!! Nothing posted on the website about this closure. No one from the casino called or sent an email about this closure. Two light bulbs out in the room. Not a nice bathroom!!!

Every machine is completely rigged! I put 40 in, about to hit a bonus so I put another 100 in.... And lost everything in 5. Typical rip off casino! Don't waste your time and hard earned money. I have very bad knees, there isn't even a bench outside. Because they want you to go give them more money. So I sat on the curb with my legs in the parking lot incomplete pain. But oh well I guess that's casino greed.

Went to Eagle's Nest restaurant in the complex. It was prime rib buffet for $25. The prime rib was tough and hard to cut. There were a lot of other choices on the buffet, including chicken and fish. They were both good. Wait staff were very good.

Our trip to the Northwoods was to attend the Celebration of Life for my brother. He lived in Lac du Flambeau for 20 years and loved it. To say we were impressed with Lake of Torches Resort/Casino is an understatement! Our room was very clean and comfortable, with great amount of storage. Every employee was professional but VERY pleasant and personable. Then there is the location. We cannot say enough about the beauty of its location and the grounds, especially the views from the decks of the lake and trees. We are already planning a family vacation there for next year. The Northwoods truly are spectacular 🤗!!!

My daughter's favorite hike in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. A slow incline to a final stretch with lots of stairs. You can see for miles once you reach the top of the tower.

Not a hike for a novice hiker. The terrain is slightly steep and there are many stairs. There are rest points. Beautiful view!

Absolutely stunning. If you are visiting this park, visit here.

Great trail to walk! Gravel path and new (2020) boardwalks meander to the falls. It’s 1.3 miles one way and is heavily wooded so be prepared with bug spray and water. We didn’t find a great place to get behind the falls but other people there had. We had kids in tow so we weren’t that adventurous.
Elsa N — Google review
Says it's a 1/2 mile from parking lot to peak. Steep and has steps at end.
Lauren B — Google review
Just a short walk up Summit Peak from the parking lot - 0.5 mile walk partially on a boardwalk towards the end to the observation tower. Highest point in the Porkies, great views from atop the tower and also from the observation deck before the tower.

Nestled in the forested Porcupine Mountains, Lake of the Clouds is a stunning valley lake that offers various activities such as swimming, fishing, and camping. Accessible via hiking trails or a scenic overlook, this shimmering blue lake is a picturesque gem in Upper Michigan. Surrounded by old-growth forest and located near Lake Superior, it provides breathtaking views of forested mountains and clear blue waters.
Very nice to visit, not far from the parking lot. 300 ft walk upwards but do-able. Hiked up with a 30lb baby attached to me so not bad lol. The board walk is also great to walk little longer but more to see! They even put up binoculars for people who have red-green color blindness to enjoy a more vibrant view. I thought it was awesome.
Rita A — Google review
Gorgeous spot with a view of the lake and the Porcupine Mountains. The viewing area is at the end of a 7-mile drive that is quite scenic. The path to the overlook is short, paved and fairly steep. At the top, you can enjoy the views from a flatter viewing area on the right, or the more adventurous can climb some rocks for a nice view.
Augie R — Google review
Beautiful area. Free to enter if you have a state park pass. Definitely worth checking out if your near by. Tons of hiking trails. They have a nice paved path taking you to a awesome view. For an even better view it's a uneven rocky climb. Lots of signs explaining the wildlife

Nestled along the shores of Lake Superior, Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is Michigan's largest state park and a true gem for nature lovers. Spanning an impressive 60,000 acres, this pristine wilderness boasts towering old-growth forests and breathtaking cliff-top views. With over 90 miles of hiking trails winding through its rugged terrain, adventurers can explore everything from serene waterfalls to rustic cabins.
What a gorgeous park. Lake of the clouds is absolutely gorgeous. Pretty views from lookout. There are quite a few hikes in the park. Some have small parking lots so take this into consideration. The Escarpment Trail, is just over 8 miles and 1653ft elevation gained. Super pretty views. There are seven waterfalls to check out. A lot of wildlife to encounter. Camping there - The campground is split into two loops. The east loop is a generator-friendly side, while the west loop is generator-free. Time recommended in park - three days two nights.

Oldest hardwood forest in North America! The roads are easy to navigate, clearly marked. The lake in the clouds was breathtaking and worth the trip. Vistas galore with many other tourists unfortunately. I highly recommend Porupune mountains

Breathtaking views of Lake of the Clouds after just a short hike from the access point.
Kathryn B — Google review
As an avid hiker from southeastern Michigan, I've been wanting to hike the Porcupines for years. I did the Government Peak--Connector Line--Big Carp River--Escarpment trail loop, which took about 7 hours and was a real beatdown because the Escarpment Trail, which I did last, had the toughest terrain. But it was totally worth it. I'm into seeing big trees and old growth forest and the Porcupines have one of the largest remaining stretches of old growth Hemlock forest in the country. This forest has a dark, epic feel, unlike other kind of forest in the eastern US. And here, you can hike through it for hours on end, which is a really special experience. Lake of the Clouds is as beautiful as everyone says it is and made for an especially satisfying 'big reveal' after 5 hours of hiking and a final big climb up a hill. But as pretty as it is, for me, the real highlight was the miles of hiking through primeval forest. There aren't many places where you can do that, especially in the eastern US.

The Ontonagon Lighthouse, a historic landmark on the shores of Lake Superior near Ontonagon, Michigan, was built in 1853 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This 38-foot tall lighthouse served as a guide for ships navigating the rough waters of the lake. The brick keeper's house, situated on a stone foundation, is an excellent example of a 19th-century lighthouse.
We stopped by, as this lighthouse was close to where we were staying. The volunteer was pleasant and very knowledgeable about the buildings history. The lighthouse is much larger than expected and I would suggest this to anyone wanting a quick stop.
Ash H — Google review
I'm glad we went. I like to visit the local lighthouses. The stairs can be tricky. We had a 5 year old with us. I liked talking to the front desk man. He was very knowledgeable and informative. I am always surprised how many rooms are in the various lighthouses. The family's must have been very dedicated.
Elizabeth H — Google review
This was such a nice little place to visit! The volunteer docent was super friendly and chatted with us for a while about the history of the lighthouse before we explored the museum. The climb up into the lighthouse was a little tight, but it was neat to see. Parking is just on the grass and there is a Portapotty for a bathroom.

Took the self guided tour with hubby. Cool little place with lots of history! $5 a person isn't too bad either. We parked in the lot and walked the gravel path up to it. Would recommend. Who doesn't want to go in a lighthouse?

The volunteers who were providing information were excellent, pleasant, and full of information. The light house itself is worth the $7 to tour, especially if you enjoy historic restored building. I felt like I was walking through someone's house in the 1900's. Lovely building with a great history.

Laid-back casino resort with basic rooms, 24-hour gaming, dining & an 18-hole golf course.
I live nearby so I've never stayed there. I go for the gambling and their restaurant. The games are updated, lots of new ones. The wins are off and on, sometimes good for me, other times good for them! The restaurant has excellent food and the workers are friendly and always cheerful. The fish fry is to die for, we liked it so much we brought 3 other

Allison in the sports bar is the only reason this isn’t a 4 star review. She helped multiple people and parties before she even acknowledged us. Then after helping one more person that came in after us, she finally said she’d be with us shortly. She certainly didn’t want to be working last night. And heaven forbid we wanted a second drink. No wonder the couple beside us had to wave at her when they wanted their check. She finally smiled at us once she was closing out our tab. The rest of the casino and resort were good. Food was very good, restaurant server was lights out, casino was good, hotel reception could be a bit more hospitable and friendly. Rooms were clean. We’d be back, but would avoid the sports bar if we saw our server working. 🤞
Matt B — Google review
Enjoyed the casino and restaurant. This was our first time using the RV park. Maybe because of the winter the sites are uneven and with major bumps for an RV. Be careful on your approach and especially use of jacks so you do not do damage. Only utility was electricity. I thought water was required in case of fire. It has potential but needs attention.
Diana A — Google review
I gave this hotel 1 star because the food was decent. The room gets 0 stars. Worst mattress I ever DIDN'T sleep on, sagged s good 6" in the center. Windows were so fogged up you couldn't see through them. There was a scum line in the bath tub. Had to fight with the door to open it. If anyone from the hotel reads this I'm referring to room 234.
Tom G — Google review
Casino was nice, clean, had newer Slots and older Slots. Slots paid out enough to keep us playing, no big wins to talk about. Food was your typical grilled n fried, alittle on the pricey side. Lots of noise because of circular Bar and Pool Tables. Plus a huge TV on the wall, atmosphere like a Sports Bar, if you like that. They did have a more upscale Restaurant but for whatever reason, it was closed.

Stayed here in their RV spaces. Electricity included in the nightly fee. Can use the pool. Nice bar with food. Very clean facility.

We have been here several times and it's one of our favorite waterfalls in the western u.p. It's an easy walk to the base of them and you can walk up along both sides for better views or experience. It's a nice one to bring littles too that can't hike far.

Adventure Mining Co offers a variety of tours that provide an authentic experience of exploring an old copper mine in Upper Michigan. Located in Ontonagon County at the base of the Keweenaw Peninsula, this attraction allows visitors to delve into the history of the region firsthand. The Captains Tour, which lasts 5-6 hours, involves rappelling, climbing over loose rocks, and even crossing a suspension bridge.
I went on the miner’s tour today (includes the rappel) and it was amazing! The tour guide was so informative, and they took so many great pictures of me during different parts of tour. Most importantly, they made me feel confident that I could achieve things I wasn’t sure I could achieve. I left feeling stronger and more confident and most importantly ready to do it all over again!

The miners tour is out of this world!! Our guide was Dominic. He was great and very knowledgeable!! It’s well worth the money. For those of you having second thoughts about this, don’t worry, you are in good hands. Wear warm clothes. You will experience rappelling and walking a plank while be tethered on. There was 10 in our group. After the tour we spent hours talking about it! Unforgettable experience. Memories for a lifetime. Thanks Dominic for a great tour.

What a great mine tour. We did the Prospectors Tour that lasted 90 + minutes. It was educational and fun and we had great dialog with Rhine, our guide. We got to see stopes, copper and a by-product, silver. We experienced what it was light for the miners in the 1800s using only a candle. It was cool to see the vein glow with just a candle. Then total darkness, for just a moment. I highly recommend this tour.
Dick B — Google review
My Captain's Tour on July 29, 2225, was pure adventure from start to finish. Booking was simple – booked, paid, waiver filled out online. Don't forget a warm jacket; the second level of the dungeon plunges into ice-cold depths. And trekking boots are essential – the path below is littered with countless razor-edged stones. The absolute highlights? Plunging down on two thrilling rappels and conquering one heart-pumping ascent! Never touched climbing gear before? No worries. Guides Don and Zoe are masters – they break down every step clearly and safely. One crucial tip: Use the restroom before you descend. There are zero facilities down in the mine itself. And the journey there? Buckle up for a wild ride! We thundered over the terrain in a massive six-wheeled military transporter, getting us perfectly amped for the adventure inside. This tour delivers serious adrenaline. Highly recommended – an unforgettable experience!"

If you have any interest in mining/Michigan history, geology, or adventure, I highly recommend taking a tour at Adventure Mine! I’ve gone on the Miner’s Tour and Captain’s Tour; both were exceptional. The owner and guides are extreamly knowledgeable, accommodating, and friendly. They seem genuinely interested in making sure you enjoy your experience. Which includes your safety! I can’t stress enough the importance of wearing sturdy hiking or work boots, and bring a light jacket. They provide all other safety gear. It is also important to make sure you pay attention and follow their instructions. They also have an Airbnb on site which has fantastic views that I would highly recommend. It is very clean and perfect for one or two people. On a more personal note: The Miner’s Tour was the first time I ever did something like repeling. It challenged me more mentally then physically, but it ignited a confidence in me to try many new things I never imagined myself doing before! I’m so thankful for all the experiences I’ve had at Adventure Mine, and look forward to stopping by when I’m in the area.

Amazing experience. We did the Miners tour, which took about 3 hours. This tour includes the rappelling and bridge crossing. This is an awesome tour! Our guide Shawn was so knowledgeable and fun!. We did the miners tour so we were a little nervous going in, but we had nothing to worry about. It was really fun and really interesting. We enjoyed learning the history and geology of the mine. And the bats were so cool! Shawn did a great job preparing us to repel and it was so much fun. There were only a few spots where we had to duck and go through lower areas and it was a piece of cake. They were not very long. We highly recommend this tour!

We never have time to stop somewhere before the kitchen closes, but last Friday we came in about an hour before the kitchen closed after searching for places that were open. We were so glad we stopped, it was our first time here and we will definitely be back when we are in the area. The bartender went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed and checked on us often. The kids even applauded the food and service. Ski Brule, located near Iron River, Michigan, is a family-friendly ski resort known for its affordability and variety of activities. With unfussy accommodations including hot tubs and saunas, the resort offers a casual atmosphere for visitors. The ski area features 17 trails served by five chairlifts and seven surface lifts with a vertical drop of 500 feet.
We went on Saturday morning and it was a great time! The guys in the shop were great! They were so funny and did a great job with my friends rusty old skis! The trails were super fun and there are a ton of lifts so the line aren’t long! The setup is a little confusing but you get used to it pretty fast.
Mo R — Google review
Ski Brule remains my favorite place to visit, ski and train. It feels like coming home and visiting family. From the lift operators, general staff and even the owners, are consistently the most friendly and accommodating people I've ever met. Always welcoming. I have NEVER experienced anything even close at any other ski resort. Even the drive up from the Illinois/Wisconsin line is enjoyable. My only regret is: I wished that I lived closer, so Ski Brule could be my home base. My time is generally restricted, so getting to Ski Brule doesn't happen as often as I would prefer. Even then, getting the season pass has been well worth it and highly recommended!
SkiRacer12 — Google review
Absolutely no complaints about the skiing. Love how they open so early when no other resorts do and go fairly late into spring. Snowmaking and grooming have always been great too. Staff are always friendly and haven't ever waited more than a couple minutes for a lift. My one complaint is the entire ticketing setup. For one, $75 is a decent price for midseason at 100% open, but charging that much for early season with 1-3 runs open is insanity. It costs less to ski opening day at A-basin in Colorado (with 3x the vertical and high speed lifts). They need dynamic pricing like other resorts where prices change based on demand and how much is open. And the discounted advance tickets are a good idea in theory, but needing to plan two weeks for them to physically ship (and offsetting any savings by paying for shipping/"service fees") when every other resort on the planet figured out online reservations a decade ago is a mess.
Skier0224 — Google review
Their pitch is a "Family Fun Resort"; they take that seriously. Tammi was so nice on the phone, answering a plethora of questions, we just had to book a 2 night stay. Everyone we met resonated that same kindness. So nice we stayed an extra night. Price is normal, rooms (pioneer inn) we're clean with small stove with oven, kitchen sink, and had all basic dishes one needs. Full size fridge with upper freezer. Only complaint is no stopper for the tub. Will be buying season pass.

How beautiful. The monument was bigger then expected. A lot of little bits of history throughout . Nice walking trails for praying. Beautiful views. Quite place. People were very respectful while visiting which is nice to have at a religious place. Worth the stop to see.
Duranda R — Google review
This is such a beautiful and peaceful place open for all to enjoy. There are a couple of walking paths. Great views that overlook the lake. The gift shop is closed on Sunday but outdoor area still open!
Maria S — Google review
The Bishop Baraga Shrine is taken care of by the Bishop Baraga Foundation and is not connected in any way to the Holy Store next to the property. The blue cabin on the Shrine property is the new gift shop with all proceeds going back into the care of the grounds and statue. There are picnic tables and lots of benches on the Shrine property. The blue cabin is the only shop that sells authentic Bishop Baraga Shrine items. A healing Mass is held once a year and many potential healings have been reported.
Nancy H — Google review
Hidden gem. The shrine is beautiful. Story station of his journey are moving. Visit the large gift shop too.
Mary M — Google review
A wonderful venue of serenity amidst the bustle of campers, vacationers, and busy locals along the Lakeshore. Quietly pray the rosary in their woody setting and visit the shrine memorializing the bishop's missionary work. A true gem and worth the visit! Oh, and the view of the lake is spectacular!
Ken M — Google review
What a beautiful place! Wander and see how peaceful it is. Read all of the signs of it's history. Bishop Baraga went through so much back then. Let's not forget him. The grounds are pretty and the trail is extended for further walking. Don't drive through this area without stopping. I have attached some photos. We will return again.
Jean K — Google review
Interesting stop. There is a short trail behind the shrine as well.

Not great service. Looked like the gift shop is staffed intermittently.

Bewabic State Park

State park
Outdoor Activities
Bewabic State Park is situated on a chain of lakes, offering excellent fishing and a sandy beach for swimming. The campground is set in a shaded area surrounded by virgin hardwood forest. It's the only state park with tennis courts. Visitors can enjoy various activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, and hiking along scenic trails. The park also features picnic areas, boat launches, and modern amenities like flush bathrooms and clean showers. Additionally, there are opportunities for berry picking in the area.
Been coming here since I was a kid. Parks need to be updated and there isn't as much play equipment for kids as there used to be. However, there is a nice little beach, boat launch, and picnic area as well as flush bathrooms and showers. Kayaks and life jackets for day use can be found by the beach toilets, as well as a paddle board. Lots of little fishing areas and hiking trails, as well as multiple lakes. Picked quite a few blackberries and Raspberries as well! Still love it here!
Kaitlyn D — Google review
Loved this SP! Stayed here in the spring and the lake was beautiful. Walking and hiking trails were well maintained, and the DNR staff were very friendly.
Rebekah N — Google review
Awesome campground, big enough sites that you're not on top of each other. Lake Fortune was lovely. Bathrooms were clean and showers are available. We like it so much we're going back this weekend.
Emmy K — Google review
Nice lake, very peaceful environment with nice staff. Cool trail to a very nice island with a nice bridge, could see all different kinds of fish from the bridge. I can imagine many people enjoy fishing here because I saw three fishings boats. Note that there may be mud on some of the trails if it recently rained
Alexander D — Google review
First time camping with my kids in a tent and the first experience was amazing the place is quite (minus the weekends) and most are so friendly. If you don't like crowds I highly recommend coming during the week and please adults with little kids please don't let them wonder off alone anything can still happen to those babies. My only other issue was some people thought it was still ok to drive the wrong way when there are signs that literally tell you what way to go throughout the campground which could be dangerous for little kids walking around not paying attention. As far as the staff I give them 10 stars and will be back with my family.
Felicia B — Google review
We visited Bewabic State Park one night on our way RVing thru the U.P. We had a spacious and shady site near the bathrooms and fresh water. The trails were winding, but we really enjoyed them, along with our dogs. The fall colors were really stunning in the area.
Nicole K — Google review
This is an absolutely beautiful, clean state park. My family and I really enjoyed camping here. The sites are very private and the campground is pretty quiet. Loved it! We will definitely be coming here again.
Alexandria — Google review
Very nice. The spots for the most part are very good sized, there are a lot of drive through. Most of the lots are very private, you are not right on top of each other. The bathrooms and the showers are nice also. The bathrooms by C loop are the better of the two. They also have three vaulted toilets that are centrally located in each loop. There are three loops A loop,B loop, and C loop. B loop and C loop are the bigger ones. They have a nice boat launch, great for fishing with four small lakes connected to each other. The beach is very nice also.

Thomas Rock Scenic Overlook is a hidden gem in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, offering a short and easy nature trail with informative signs about the local flora and fauna. The best time to visit is during the vibrant fall colors, when you can enjoy stunning views of Big Bay, Lake Independence, and Lake Superior from the spacious walkway. Accessible for all with clean facilities and interesting nature trivia along the trails, this overlook provides a peaceful retreat with picnic tables at the top.
A local in Powell suggested we go here and what a great recommendation it was. A short walk from the parking lot takes you to a couple of locations overlooking Independence Lake and Lake Superior past there.
Andy B — Google review
A nice little park...there are picnic tables throughout and lots of trails to explore. The lookout over the rock is quite spectacular. It is a pretty easy hike and a great place to sit and have a little picnic. There are a lot of information boards throughout the trails explaining plant and tree life. Great for kids and adults!
Troy Z — Google review
Easy walking trail, only takes about 30 minutes to do the loop. Beautiful fall colors viewing!!
Sharon S — Google review
Quick drive from Big Bay. Great view of Lake Independence, Lake Superior and even Copper Harbor!
Richard E — Google review
Incredible views of Lake Superior and Lake Independence. Was a spectacular spot to enjoy the fall colors. Pretty easy wide gravel trail the entire loop, could have done it with our stroller. Benches and a picnic table are a nice touch, it's not a very large place or a long trail, but well worth spending some time soaking in the views.
Gary P — Google review
Clean trails, easy enough to push a stroller. Nice views, clean toilets.
JORDAN P — Google review
Stunning. The map makes it look much longer of a walk than it really is. Don't forget your 2 quarters.
Raquel M — Google review
Great walk, with beautiful views. There are informational posts along the way that talk about the plants along the way! Don't forget the bug spray and get ready for a delightful afternoon. It took us about 50 mins, but we really took our time and enjoyed and read all the information posts. Oh and there are plenty of benches and picnic tables along the way!

The Da Yooper Tourist Trap is a roadside attraction that features a wide assortment of fossils, minerals, and precious stones as well as a wonderland of oversized roadside attractions. The gift shop has an extensive selection of novelty items, but the real draw for tourists is the opportunity to see some truly unique and amazing things outside.
This is one hell of a place to get souvenirs. The prices are extremely reasonable. The staff is very friendly. There is a huge selection of items to choose from. Outside has a wonderful array of visual oddities that make you laugh and are great for pictures with your friends and family.

Quirky and fun! They had great prices and a nice selection of things. They have bathrooms available as well. Outside they have some fun displays you can look at. It is worth the stop just to view or to find some souvenirs!

I may have fallen for a tourist trap but I got some funny pictures of my little brother as a dorkmeister! Gift shop had plenty of selection almost any type of souvenir it’s here. Pretty reasonable prices. I didn’t get anything from the rock shop but it had some nice things there many unique rocks and minerals. Line to check out took a little bit but there was only one cash register and there were a lot of people finishing up there shopping when I went in line. Bathroom was funny with a bunch of signs and clean. Customer service could be better but overall it was good.

Super cool place! They literally have EVERYTHING! Lots of neat outside stuff to look at before going in, be sure to read the signs lol!

A must stop for Yooper randomness! We’ve been stopping at Da Yooper Trap since I was a kid. There’s all sorts of oddities outdoors with various photo ops. My kids are always stunned at the complete chaos. Another treat is their gift shop. It’s full of things like stickers, trinkets, clothing, postcards, pocket knives, etc. We throughly enjoy stopping each and every time!

Just sayin' it is nice to see any of these quirky local businesses still around. The rock shop has locally-sourced items and a variety of other stuff. It's still run by old timers who can share local mining knowledge about the rocks. Reminds me of the late-50s early-60s roadside attractions I saw as a kid.

Their knowledge and enthusiasm are contagious, and it's clear they care deeply about preserving and sharing this important piece of local history.

This was a true Ishpeming treasure! Upon our arrival we engaged in conversation with former miners and volunteer workers who were a wealth of knowledge and information! The museum and underground tour contained incredible amounts of artifacts that helped us to better visualize the real conditions of a miner’s work and life. It’s obvious that this is a community of volunteers and supporters are proud of the history they have preserved. Do not miss this one!!

Fun and informative little tour. Happy I remembered this tour from when I was a little kid on a school trip and decided to go as an adult, learned some new things about our towns. You get a nice history on the area and about the mines, our guide was very knowledgeable being that he even worked in some of the mines around Ishpeming/Negaunee.

Mountains
Sugarloaf Mountain, located in Marquette, offers breathtaking vistas of Lake Superior and other landmarks such as the Superior Dome, Upper Ore Dock, Wetmore Landing, Little Presque Isle, and Hogsback Mountain. The hike to the top is relatively quick and easy with two trail options: an easier route around the mountain and a more challenging trail involving rock scrambling. The peak stands at approximately 1000 feet above sea level and features three observation platforms for soaking in the panoramic views.
Aside from the stairways there are other ways you can take from the parking lot to climb up if you wanted to go a different route or find a place for bouldering. It’s a beautiful little mountain with a pretty view🌄
Sereta F — Google review
I’m in love with this place! This is a 30min hike one way. I have done it 3 times. It has iconic views, the hike is totally worth it! This last time I went for the sunrise. The photos don’t do justice. For a good sunrise, be there 30 minutes before sunrise! They have two ways to go, easy and hard ( hard way is shorter) just follow the hike path and signs. Doable for kids ( I would say 7 yrs and up) it does require to climb a bit of stairs.
Patricia D — Google review
Such a great day! Easy to find, excellent free parking and pit toilet available. Choices on how strenuous you want to be on your way to the top. Gorgeous hike awaits! Walkable for all ages, enjoy canopies of trees, wooden stairs with handrails and informative signs along the way. Then you reach the top and it should take your breath away! So worth it! Various wood deck platforms, facing different directions provide safe viewing and unforgettable vistas! Trust me, it’s special.

Short, easy hike (if you are good with stairs) to a beautiful view of the lake and surrounding area! We went just as the rain had stopped and caught the fog rolling in off the water- super neat.

Beautiful views from the top of the mountain. Be sure to pack a good amount of water. They have an easier path and a more challenging path up and down the mountain. The easier path is less steep but also takes much longer to climb. If you take the more difficult path be sure to watch your step. Either way, it's a fun hike up, and you're sure to have a good time.

A must stop if you can climb stairs. Fantastic views in every direction. Great place to view God's beautiful creation! I could have stayed there looking for hours.

This is such an incredible experience! The view is just beautiful when you make it to the top. Its well worth the 300 step you have to walk to get up there, just take your time, you will not be disappointed!

Excellent ice cream for rock bottom prices. We got 6 ice creams for under $20. Where is that even possible in 2025?? And the ice cream was incredible. Service was good, maybe a little slow. Some indoor seating but not a ton if you’re going during a busier time, but there’s outdoor seating if it’s not too hot.

Just a couple tourists looking for a late night snack, figured no way is this ice cream shop open until 10, but we gave it a shot and they are indeed still open. The girls behind the counter were very friendly and working hard and took care of us quickly. The ice cream was great, and as close to the source as you’re going to get.

We're from TC, and are visiting a relative in Marquette. She took us here for ice cream; I believe it tasted as good as Moomer's, but a lot less expensive!!! Yummy and a polite and helpful staff!!!
Paul J — Google review
Love the ice cream! However, I’ve went 2 times now and been 15-20 minutes early before close and the staff wouldn’t serve me because the line was too long they said (was not out the door yet). I recommend changing your hours to say when you stop serving people. I saw 10 people alone be turned down.
Brianne L — Google review
I take my son to Jilberts at least once a week typically around 4pm- we absolutely love the ice cream and the staff when we go. However, tonight we got to the door at 5:40 (I checked the time on my phone) and had the door locked practically right in front of our faces as we were going to open it. They claimed they were closed and the line was too long- I personally have seen them get through lines out the door in 5 minutes, and this line was nowhere near the door! Very disheartening and slightly disrespectful. I love supporting this local business and love supporting all local businesses where I can, and tonight we had to go to a chain for ice cream! It was a bummer for sure.

Enough flavors of ice cream to truly make the decision difficult. And prices pretty affordable compared to places like Kilwins

Presque Isle Park in Marquette, Michigan is a 323-acre peninsula that extends into Lake Superior. It's a popular destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering wooded trails, lakeside cliffs, picnic facilities, and a concert bandshell. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, swimming, picnicking, and nature observation. The park also features the Marquette Harbor Lighthouse and provides opportunities to watch freighters heading to the ore docks.
We visited on a very rainy, cold day but despite the weather, it was still a stunning place. Everything is well kept with restrooms and picnic areas throughout. The many trails throughout the park lead to great views. We stayed about an hour and a half, but you could easily spend a half day here if you did more trails and overlooks.

AMAZING VIEWS!!! We live by Lake Michigan and although it can be choppy and the waves are pretty rough, it does not compare to the power of Lake Superior! But the VIEWS are what is so awesome! Wonderful walking path to view all this beauty! If you go out to see the Black Rocks, BE SURE to wear appropriate shoes!!! Very rough terrain to reach them, but worth it if you are physically able. I would definitely come back here when in the area:)

Absolutely spectacular! We always have our furbabies with us so we don’t stay for long but each time we come we discover something new and magical. Visitors beware there are certain hours the road is closed to vehicles to allow for bike and foot traffic, also that dogs are not allowed outside of the vehicle. An absolute joy to visit!

Beautiful! For those not from the area, its located in Marquette which is a very cute town. Its the perfect mix of trails and downtown. The trails are very easy, not intense so good for beginner hikers. Beautiful views of the lake and the black rocks are very cool!
Rachael H — Google review
Beautiful views of the lake and black rocks. A good mix of more fun and challenging hiking paths, as well as easier and serene ones through the woods. You can also drive through a one way that loops around the peninsula if you wish or walk along the road for a more direct path to the black rocks on foot. If you take some of the harder trails, be careful particularly on the side of some of the hills. Some are quite steep on the side of the path.
Ben — Google review
Stopped in over the Labor Day Weekend, my wife wanted to check out the Black Rocks. I knew nothing about them until we walked out and saw a large number of people jumping off into the water. We were not suited to indulge at this time, but it looked to be fun. Also, walked the breakwall near the ore dock. This looks like a great place to spend summer time when in the area again.

Lakenenland Sculpture Park is a unique attraction located in the Houghton-Hancock area of Michigan. The park, created by sculptor and boilermaker Tom Lakenen, features over 100 sculptures made from scrap iron. This free 37-acre park is open to visitors seven days a week and showcases Lakenen's whimsical and satirical creations.
I think the last time I was here was around 25 years ago, and there is so much more here than my last visit! If you love junkyard art, this place is a must-see! He's really built this place into something spectacular. It's free to enter, and takes around an hour and a half if you're hiking it (I wasn't actually paying attention to the time, so I'm making an educated guess. You can drive through, too, if you can't or just don't want to walk). I recommend getting out and walking it, though, if you're able. There is a playground area, shelters, picnic tables, several porta-potties, and a decent amount of parking. There were quite a lot of vehicles in the lot when we arrived, but I had no issues getting a parking spot. Besides the sculptures, there's also a lovely pond with beautiful flowers, a nature trail with a boardwalk (and hidden things to find along the way), a big area to rest and have something to eat, a playground area, small concert venue, and some nice memorials, including one for the Edmund Fitzgerald. There is a small souvenir shop, as well (I don't believe there were any snacks, though). There's so much history here, some seriousness mixed in with silly zany craziness, and tons of beauty. What a great legacy! If you're visiting the UP for waterfalls, rock hunting, fishing, relaxation, or whatever, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary!
Nathan F — Google review
This place is AMAZING! I highly recommend a visit to anyone in the area. You can walk or drive the trail while looking at such unique pieces of art that are welded, painted, and anything else you can think of! New stuff is added from time to time so it always seems like there is something new to see. There’s also a bog walk. Did I mention it’s free (but donate!!!) and very kid friendly. We had the best time and I love that the artist is local. Amazing time, thank you so much!
Tay J — Google review
Absolutely amazing! At least a hundred sculptures. What this guy can do with metal that he repurposes is unbelievable! You can drive or walk. We walked. Probably 1 mi worth of walking to see all the sculptures. You just can't imagine his creativity until you see it! A must stop!! Open 24 hours. No fee.
Bruce W — Google review
This free exhibit is definitely a unique experience. I would have given it 5 stars, but quite a few left-sided political pieces have been added. Many of us are tired of having political views shoved at us. But that is their freedom of speech. The art itself is unique and we enjoyed it. I especially enjoyed the art tributes to our military.
L O — Google review
Self-guided, free tour 24/7! Donations always appreciated. Every time I go, there are new displays and I’m certain I miss areas from backtracking…cool place to stop at on your way through!
Willow A — Google review
We parked and walked through the sculpture park. There are a bunch of unique creations throughout the Upper Peninsula woods. These are some wild, unique and unusual art! It’s near Marquette and just off the highway. It’s free but there are donations spots to help the park. They also had a gift and refreshment stand. We might have gotten carried away with the number of pictures we took. Lakenenland is a must do stop if you’re in the area.
Rebel C — Google review
This place is so unique! If you're in the area its definitely worth the stop! So many very creative and deep art pieces. Great for all ages! And you can enjoy it all for free!
Heather Y — Google review
This was a cool stop we did while in the UP. It's free to do, but we did do a donation. The art on display was pretty sweet! Lots to see walking through there, you can drive through it, but we were on motorcycles, so we parked and walked, which was better because we could get closer to the art than if you did driving through. The mosquitoes were bad when we were there June 16, 2025, but we made the best of it and still enjoyed it all!

Eben Ice Caves Trailhead

Nature & Parks
Caverns & Caves
The Eben Ice Caves Trailhead is situated in the Rock River Canyon Wilderness within the Hiawatha National Forest. The trail leads to a stunning collection of icy stalactites and dramatic caves that are perfect for climbing and exploration. Hiking during winter requires proper footwear such as microspikes for an easier trek. It's advisable to arrive early to secure parking and avoid crowds, especially if you want to take photos without any obstructions.
Awesome hike! Pretty short and well traveled. Parking lot is also large. I would recommend crampons for boots because the trail is very slippery at spots.
Rachael K — Google review
The trail is groomed and clearly marked to the caves, which are spectacular! Highly recommended wearing cleats for traction because it’s super slippery near the caves.
Jennifer W — Google review
This spring marked our very first time exploring Upper Michigan, and what better way to kick things off than with a visit to the legendary Eben Ice Caves? We arrived at the trailhead late Saturday afternoon(4/19/2025), buzzing with excitement for what lay ahead. And let me tell you—our experience was nothing short of incredible. The trail to the caves is a 2.2-mile round trip, winding through beautiful northern woods with just enough elevation changes to keep things interesting. But we quickly realized that spring in the U.P. still holds onto winter—the path was blanketed in snow and slick with ice. Without spikes or hiking poles, we knew we were in for a bit of a challenge. Despite the slippery terrain and a few sketchy moments, we made it out and back safely, and honestly, had an unlimited blast doing it. There’s something special about working a little harder to reach a destination—it makes the payoff that much sweeter. And the payoff? Absolutely stunning. The ice caves were otherworldly, shimmering with light and texture. It felt like walking into a hidden cathedral carved by winter itself. We were grinning the entire time, soaking in every moment of that beautiful hike and unforgettable sight. We’re already dreaming of a return trip in the heart of winter, when the ice curtains are said to grow even more massive and dramatic. Until then, this springtime adventure is one we’ll be reliving for a long time.

The ice caves are beautiful, and the hike enjoyable as well. Expect a moderately challenging walk in, followed by a steep CLIMB (not walk) on ice covered terrain. We arrived on a weekday morning, and shared the site with only one other group throughout our visit, though one left and another arrived. You'll need gear for this site. We wore Yak Traks ice cleats and wished for more aggressive full crampons for the climb. The Yak Traks were great for the rest of the hike, however. Absolutely beautiful site, and so worth the time to reach! If you go prepared, you'll enjoy it. Going without the necessary gear would be dangerous.

So so beautiful. My husband, me, and our 5 and 7 year old boys have been doing the hike every year for the past 3 years and I've been doing it since I was their age. A lot more tourists these days, so be prepared for messy parking and road there, possibly a hike to the hike if you hit it on a busy day. So worth it though. Most people who aren't used to hiking ice may want picks for their boots, my kids handle it just fine without them though. Happy hiking!

We visited 2.13.21, the trail was pretty easy to walk (with ice cleats) it took us about 20-30min to get to the ice. Our group: 2 young adults, 11yr, and 6yr old (pretty healthy). I went a few years back with my older relative and it took us twice as long without ice cleats and walking slower. So please be mindful of your outdoor activity level and be prepared, wear snow pants so you can slide down some of the hills because there are a few, including one on the way back down from the ice caves.

Ice caves were absolutely beautiful!! The hike there and back is about a mile, and it was a little treachourous due to iciness so I would highly recommend anyone who goes there get spikes put on their boots. It was pretty busy with people (it was a Saturday) so it kind of took away from the splendour of it, but overall it was a great hike.

Eben Ice Caves - nature never disappoints! The new parking area & bathroom at the trailhead is a welcome addition & is greatly appreciated! Update - with the addition of the parking lot & bathroom, there is also an opportunity to contribute to the upkeep, as this is on private property. Went during the week & only one other family visiting. It was nice to get some great photos! The trail was widened (thank you), however there are a few challenging spots to get across - so definitely recommend using Yak Traks or a similar product on your boots.

Au Train Falls

Nature & Parks
Au Train Falls is a picturesque waterfall located on the Au Train River, featuring both upper and lower falls. The upper falls drop nearly 40 feet and are best seen in the spring when water flows consistently, while the lower falls drop 10 feet. Visitors can enjoy an easy 1-mile round trip walk to reach an observation deck overlooking the falls. The area offers ample parking, restroom facilities, and trails for exploration.
Au Train Falls are located on the Au Train River just south of the Cleveland Cliffs basin on M94. The Upper Falls drop about 40’ and the lower falls around 10’. In dry years the falls are just a trickle, but in spring they flow hard. Signage making it easy to find and there is parking at the first turn for the upper falls and at the end for the lower. The walk down to the upper falls can be a bit slick so watch your footing. The lower falls are easily accessed by walking passed the gate and down the gravel road. Take M94 west for 12 miles, turn right onto AuTrain Forest Lake Road. Turn on first right (Power Dam Rd.) into parking lot.

Peaceful walk down to the waterfall. It was great to see a small hydroelectric plant. You can peek in through the metal mesh to see the turbines going and the water coming out of the back of the plant. There were a few trials in the area as well. Worth the stop!

06/23/2025 wasn’t expecting these falls to be so big or beautiful, so it was a wonderful sight to see just a short downhill walk from the parking area!! I was a bit worried about making a wrong turn or being somewhere we weren’t supposed to be when turning onto the dirt road from the main road, but don’t worry, you’re in the right spot. worth it!!

There is a hard packed, sand road that leads to the falls. At first, you may think you're in the wrong place, but you're not. There is a small hike to the falls itself, and you can get as close to it as you want to. Beautiful, clear, cold water. Just a nice waterfall.

Unique falls to visit if you are in the Au Train area. The falls are shallow and great to walk around on. The bridge at the end of the falls is great for those who just want to look. There are a few areas for picnicking so its a great spot to spend some extra time.

Beautiful falls with an easy walk to and from.

Nice place in a beautiful area. The falls were easy to get to and probably running a little slow due to lack of rain. But still worth seeing.
