Potato River Falls

Nature & Parks
Potato River Falls is a must-visit natural wonder in Wisconsin, recommended by locals for its free access and stunning views. The falls offer upper and lower viewpoints, both accessible via stairs. Despite the effort, visitors are rewarded with beautiful scenery at the bottom. Although the water level may vary depending on the time of year, the falls never fail to impress. The area is not overly crowded, providing a peaceful experience for nature enthusiasts.
Posting my review a bit late, we visited here back on September 12, 2024. Our friends who live in Wisconsin recommended us to visit these falls because it's free. With us having out of state plates, we would've been charged more had we visited the other water falls. Be prepared to walk down/back up some stairs in order to get to the scenic overlook at the Upper Falls. But once you're down at the bottom, the view is beautiful! The water level was lower due to the time of year, but it still did not disappoint! We hiked a bit farther down, which I don't recommend doing from here if you're not a hiker or experienced with the terrain, because it's steep. Once down there, we were able to see more of the falls from the bottom. There is a specific hiking trail that leads to the lower falls area, but we didn't see that until we were back up top. Definitely use the Lower Falls access point if you want to go farther down. Overall, I'm happy we decided to see these falls. It was quiet and we were the only people there!
Stephanie E — Google review
Best falls in the area. It’s a bit of a hike to get to the lower falls but it’s totally worth it. Even considering the stairs. Just take them one at a time. You can swim up to the falls in the somewhat clear water. There were no leeches on any of our group of nine and we were all hanging out there for three hours. Make sure to bring water shoes so that you can traverse the river to get to the falls area. Great fun for the whole family!
K P — Google review
Hiking level intermediate there are quite a few stairs if you go all the way down to the river bed where it’s fun to swim and splash around lots of crawfish to catch. Lots of fun for the kids dog friendly there was hardly anybody out there so I was able to keep my dog off leash most of the time The main upper area is an easy hike/walk to the deck viewing area. But it is totally worth the hike all the way down to the river bed.
Samantha M — Google review
Lottts of steps! Easier walking to the fall then walking back! This was the longest walk of all the falls we visited during our trip! Great view though!
Brenda S — Google review
Excellent falls. Many different falls in one spot and different vantage points depending on how adventurous you feel. It's incredible and well worth seeing.
Zach B — Google review
Gorgeous! Of the 9 waterfalls we visited, this one was easily in the top three. There are benches to sit on to really enjoy your time watching g the water.
Kristy P — Google review
Beautiful falls but be prepared for steps though. 131 to upper falls but totally worth the workout. 197 to lower still worth it.
Christine G — Google review
One of the bigger waterfalls to see in Wisconsin. It is worth the 131 steep, stairs to access. The trail that used to be to the lower section the bank has collapsed. Worth the drive.

Copper Falls State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Park
Copper Falls State Park in Wisconsin is a year-round nature retreat offering stunning views of ancient lava flows, deep gorges, and spectacular waterfalls. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hunting, fishing, biking, and swimming. The park features wide trails with picturesque spots to take in the sights, along with amenities like playgrounds, shelters, picnic areas, and a swimming beach. Additionally, there are hiking trails and opportunities for wildlife viewing.
A beautiful park the trails are well-maintained and easy to hike but challenging in areas, climbing multiple stairs and decks to viewing areas. Seeing the multiple waterfalls converge into each other and the educational plaques was wonderful. We only visited for the day but plan on coming back because the campsite looked like it would be a great experience. The gift shop had a lot of great memorabilia and on hot summer days having ice cream was wonderful. There are a couple of out houses on the trails that make it easy when you have children hiking with you.
Samantha M — Google review
This is a beautiful park. We very much enjoyed hiking here. The forest was enchanting. The river and waterfalls were quite the sight. I think it would be nice if they maintained a couple trails to the waterfalls. There is a spot or two where you can get to the water. I very much recommend this park. It is quite popular given how remote it is, but it is well worth the trip.
Brad C — Google review
This is the best state park i have been to. The views are top-notch. You won't be disappointed. I came all the way from Indiana to visit this beautiful place. The trails are nice. I took my 6 mouth old in the stroller and was able to do it with some help from my spouse. So you can definitely take kids of all ages to see this beautiful place.
Christopher C — Google review
Copper Falls State Park is beautiful! We enjoyed our time here doing a few hikes and seeing the beach. To be honest, the star of the show is Brownstone Falls and the Cascades; due to mining a hundred years ago, Copper Falls has collapsed over time and now is far less impressive than Brownstone and the Cascades. However, Copper Falls is still impressive. There are a lot of trails, but honestly the Doughboys Loop is the whole point of the park; most of the other trails are just walks through the woods. The observation tower is overgrown around so all you can see is tree tops but it’s still pretty. Red Granite Falls is unique because you can walk up to it and climb on it (the Cascades and Brownstone and Copper Falls are all, understandably, very fenced around and blocked off), but the trails to Red Granite is just a walk through the woods. Also? The gift shop is stellar. We really liked it even though it’s pretty small. They had great staff there too. Overall, go to Copper Falls state park for a good walk through some woods, and a few very impressive waterfalls!
Nathan W — Google review
Beautiful Wisconsin State Park , probably one of the busiest I've been to and I can see why this place is awesome the falls are great just an all around good experience in this place lots of parking places available , bathrooms all around the park , the hiking trails are well marked and well maintained lots and safety fencing . Plenty of picture opportunities and birdwatching spots too if you want to see the fall colors the observation tower is the best spot for that all in all a great park to visit especially if you're doing the waterfall loop . (This is a state park so there is a fee to get in $3 all the way to $50 )
Erik S — Google review
Gorgeous waterfall and river scenery along well maintained hiking trails. Plenty of lookouts to take photos and rest along the way. The Doughboy trail was beautiful. Enjoyed Loon Lake views as well. State Park near Mellon WI, not far from gas and convenience stores. No dogs allowed on the doughboy trail.
K H — Google review
I went September 12th and there was no mosquitos, the park was awesome! The look out tower was a waste of time, I couldn't see anything over the trees. There is a few stairs so it's not for people in poor physical shape. The stone stairs and walls are beautiful and the falls were small but unique and fun. It's very comparable to Amnicon but I liked Amnicon better since I could crawl on the rocks.
Everlasting L — Google review
Beautiful park to visit and camp in. The campground is set up in loops which was nice to let our kids ride their bikes. Campsites were not overly private, but there was a good distance between them. The hikes to the waterfalls involve a good amount of elevation change and stairs so be prepared for a strenuous hike, but trails are well maintained and easy to hike.

Big Bay State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Scenic park on Madeline Island with a Lake Superior beach & 7 miles of hiking & nature trails.
Pretty nice state park with clean trails. There are many overlook areas that offer great views. Wish we had come earlier in the year, the water looked tempting for a swim!
Ariel S — Google review
Beautiful State Park. The bathroom facilities were clean and well kept. The campground was really well spaced out each site could use a little more tent space but very nice. Biggest bummer was that there was so few dog friendly hiking trails and no beach access for the pups on hot days. Most other places have a dog friendly beach area for families to enjoy.
Krista K — Google review
Very good experience. You get to take a ferry from Big Bay to Madeline Island. Cool little town and a beautiful island. Stay a couple of days if you want to explore. Beaches are closed to dogs, didn't really see any dog friendly beaches at all.
RobS — Google review
It's really the only worthwhile place of interest on Madeline Island worthy of the time and expense of taking a ferry to the island as a tourist. The trails along the coastline were breathtaking. It was also worthwhile to take the boardwalk to the beach and to the bog area. There is just over 1 mile of boardwalk along the coastline. You can walk on a beautiful, level improved path along the coastline for 4 miles one way. One side has turnouts viewing the coastline and the other side is wooded. However, parking areas are situated so you do not need to walk the entire distance there and back to see the highlights. I totally recommend this to be part of your trip to the Apostle Islands. You do need a WI state park pass. So if going to Copper Falls on your way to Apostle Islands, get the annual pass so you can take in Big Bay State Park. Plan on at a very minimum 4 hours to take the ferry there and back and to go on the trails.
Beverly K — Google review
Beautiful State Park with a great campground, an easy and gorgeous lakeside trail, and other good trails, too. Great place to stay on Madeline Island while touring the Apostle Islands.

Love Madaline Island, and Big Bay town park campground is great! Nice clean bathrooms and showers. If you stay at site 28, you are close enough to the office to receive wifi. Perfect for the kiddos tablet at bedtime! Highly recommend!!

Such a fantastic place to slow down and appreciate nature! The park has nice bathrooms and the ability to fill your water.

Madeline Island Museum

Museum
Local history museum
History Museums
This is a fun small museum that gives great history about the island. We do have a Historical Society pass so I can't speak to if its worth the price going in. Our 6 year old was a little squirrely so we moved through pretty quick.
Krista K — Google review
This is not worth the admission of $10 per person. They charge you to take the Ferry and then want you to pay an admission for the museum. This is a lot $$ for a large family of seven. We did not find the displays or artifacts interesting. Madeline Island we found is overrated and everything is overpriced. Stick to the other Apostle Islands lighthouses and tours. The Bayfield Museum was far more interesting and it’s FREE.
Michael R — Google review
The historical musical video was well done. The videos in the new side of the museum were relevant and easy to watch. My kids liked the creation myth story video that went with the painting on wall. The children's nook in the old museum was a hit, the kids loved feeling the pelts. It's not the most exciting museum, but it's good for an hour or 2 walkthrough while visiting the island. -Oh.... And who puts buttons on the wall will a sign not to push the buttons? That's a bit much for anyone to bear 🤣
Marcy K — Google review
This is not our first time at the museum and won't be the last. We had a great time here, yet again. We actually did a tour with them as well as had the kids do a little class (which they enjoyed. Boys 8&11) Museum is not huge, but has a lot of stuff and a lot of info. Some of the exhibits were different from a few years ago, which also was cool. Staff was always amazing! (I think we bothered them 3 different days) Thank you for a great time.
Aaron D — Google review
Few small shops once you enter the island and a couple of restaurants as well. About a 15 minute ride from Bayfield to Madeline Island. $21 for adults $10 for kids 6-11, kids 5 and under are free. Vehicle 19ft and under will run ya about an additional $38 with the pee person fee.
Mark A — Google review
What a great place and story! Amazing this place was the hub of so much activity while I would on an island. Some cool old buildings to look at a lot of artifacts from long ago.
Bruce W — Google review
Very nice exhibits and friendly helpful staff. Train table in the basement has impeccable detail. Has lots of local history including native history and culture.

Bayfield Maritime Museum

Maritime museum
Museums
The Bayfield Maritime Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich maritime history and heritage of the area. Open from June to September, this museum showcases fishing and boat building exhibits, rare artifacts, and hands-on activities for visitors to enjoy. It's a great place for history lovers and families with kids to explore the dynamic nautical history of Bayfield and the Apostle Islands.
Awesome museum! A must see if you are in the area. This little museum was so informative about the fishing and shipping industry of the area. The gentleman who was working the front desk was very knowledgeable and helpful if you had any questions. We had a great time here and were really glad we came. It is free, but they do appreciate donations. There’s lots of free parking around the corner on a side street.
Sue J — Google review
Costs you nothing but what you feel like donating to go here. You can spend an hour or just breeze through it. It's located in an attractive building near a marina with an attractive fountain in front. Features a movie and display of shipwrecks of the Apostle Islands. Also has a ship pilothouse in front.
Beverly K — Google review
Free little museum with a lot of cool historic nautical boats and artifacts! Worth a quick visit if in town or passing through like we did :)
Lindsey S — Google review
Interesting information. The staff was knowledgeable and responsive to my autistic grandson's question. Awesome place.
J.L. C — Google review
Nice small free museum. Good exhibits on the history of the area.
Daniel B — Google review
I love this place! There is an impressive and immense collection of maritime artifacts here. We came on a rainy day and it was a great place to spend some time. I’ll definitely be back. Kudos to the volunteers who make this museum special.
Eric S — Google review
Lots of nice artifacts and history. Really enjoyed visiting. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
Leslie L — Google review
The Bayfield Maritime Museum is great! There are many photos and descriptions of wrecks that occurred in the area. Also a fair number of recovered ship artifacts. The museum is free, but they have a donation jar. Well worth the visit.

A very neat stop. Ciders were okay. The apple pie was the best. Looks like their new facility and tasting room will be fantastic.
Aaron R — Google review
They had a lot of amazing plants. They are dug daily. A bunch of collectibles in the barn. Old toys and other collectibles! Just fun to look at all the stuff. They have put together a tap House that will be opening soon. Picked up some nice perennials and two plum trees.
Bruce W — Google review
Really friendly people and some great tasting cider. Make sure to check out the view from the loft.
Scott B — Google review
I look forward to the May plant sale every year :)

My wife and I went to the apple festival for our first time and decided to stop here to check it out. We are glad we did it was a cool place and not to mention they had the best honey crisp apples I have ever had, it’s sad I only have 1 left.
Brandon S — Google review
The cutest location! A must see for cider and history lovers. The tasting room has a depth of historical items and the upstairs antique room is a must visit!! The ciders are extremely approachable, semi dry and options for all palates. Don’t sleep on the amazing photo opportunities around the grounds!
Tina H — Google review
For $5, you can taste 5 different wines from their lengthy list & keep the collector wine glass. They have a wide variety of apples, jams, & other gifts too. You can also see Lake Superior from the property. I would highly recommend visiting.

South Shore Brewery

Brewery
Food & Drink
South Shore Brewery/ Deep water grill are a must stop in Ashland. The brewery and grill are just of Lake Superior in an awesome historic building. For beer on my last stop they had 7 of their beers on tap including their Nut brown, Octoberfest, 2 pilsners, a Pale ale, a wheat, and a sour. They also had 4 guest taps, standard beers in cans and bottles as well as a full bar. The food is very good as well. They had burgers, wraps, steak, fish (including lake Superior white fish), salads, and I always order the nut brown beer cheese soup. Awesome to have a place like this in Ashland. I stop here every time I am in town, you should too.
Adam D — Google review
The interior is beautiful and stylish, but the service was mediocre. The waitress was not friendly or welcoming, seemed to be annoyed with something. No one comes up to the table during the visit. We came for a quick snack, but this place is more of a dinner-type place.
Evgeniya ( — Google review
This was our 2nd time here! Our first was in 2021. We had their APPLEFEST beer at Erickson's Orchards earlier in the day at their festivities. This time, I had to stop and get some, but they only had it on tap. We stayed and had a few drinks and listened to the group playing some good bluegrass music! I even bought one of their sweatshirts! The man bartending was awesome! He was so nice and informative about where I could buy some of their canned beer. Definitely recommended this place!!! 👌
Tanya K — Google review
We drive through Ashland twice a year on our way from Ontario to Northern Minnesota to visit family... this is our favourite place to eat and have a few beer while in town. Just discovered the "bar side" as we were early for our reservation. Cool old style bar, great beers on tap! I ordered the Smoked Ribeye served over cheddar bacon pilsner risotto with asparagus. The scent of smoke hits you as soon as the plate arrives, so delicious! The creamy risotto is wonderful, cooked perfectly and the pilsner is a great idea in place of white wine, I will be trying this myself! My wife ordered the Crab Stuffed Shrimp wrapped in Bacon served over saffron rice topped with a wonderful cream sauce with just the right amount of acidity, as well as some micro greens! Amazing!... seafood was cooked to perfection, Everything tasted so good and the plating... gorgeous! Pictures don't really do this meal justice, and of course you can't smell how wonderful it was either! Make this place a stop on your next trip through the area or just head to Ashland for a drive, some great food and some tasty beers!
Marc&Tammy — Google review
Food was good. Beer was better. Huge amounts food. Spinash artichoke dip was delicious. Nashville hot chicken sandwich was not what I expected, not even close to it. Tasty but not a fan. Beer cheese soup was really good, but the cage and corned beef soup was so salty I could not even take 4 bites. Fish sandwich was ok it seems the theme tonight is too much salt. Service was good, all though it seems the waitress was in the weeds.
Jose M — Google review
Great little place to relax and have a tasty drink. Definitely visiting again!
Mateusz G — Google review
Good beer on tap but if wanted your favorite brand, it ain't here as they only serve their own brew. You can get hard liquor drinks as well. The main salmon dish was good and filling but I found the cheese curd appetizer a bit dry and they seemed like they just came out of a box and reheated.
Pettynerd — Google review
Prime Rib was amazing. Tried many of the in house beers and they're all so good!!

Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center

Visitor center
On our road trip tour of Wisconsin waterfalls, we stopped in at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center just to make sure we weren't missing any good ones. So glad we did! Amanda was very helpful and gave us a brochure about waterfalls in northwest Wisconsin organized by county with specific driving directions and some good info like path length and quality. She also helped us organize our day's itinerary and told us about how to view the Northern Lights! The visitor center was really cool, too; it's in a beautiful building and it has an historical and geological exhibit room, many artifacts and examples of animals from the area, a touchable tree of duck varieties (!), furs of different local animals to feel, a fourth-story look out to view the surrounding area (accessible by stairs or elevator), and a well-groomed path if you felt like a hike. Wow! Cool visitor's center, and nice staff.
Chanelle S — Google review
This is really an impressive visitor center. It's a beautiful building with a nice exterior and nature trails. There are several displays, a movie, an interesting mural, and a lighthouse observatory deck. I appreciated the rangers advice on what trails to hike in the area. We took her advice and were very happy with the trails she suggested. It may have made the difference of us enjoying our vacation that much more.
Beverly K — Google review
Very worthwhile stop. Many interactive and educational exhibits. All the kids, that we saw, were enjoying the displays. An elevator will take you to the top level but walk, if you can, to view the murals and nest on the way up. National Park stamps are available in the gift shop and date stamps for your parks passport are available at the service desk. Picnic tables are in the grass area out front. There is RV parking. We were there about 2 hours and could have taken longer inside plus time for the trails outside.
Sus H — Google review
Very cool place to learn about Lake Superior and surrounding areas. View from observation deck is great! Gift shop for Lake Superior souvenirs there as well. Admission is free!
Samantha B — Google review
Really loved this new visitor center.....so much to see, read and learn. The mural is incredible....the color, the detail, the facial expressions....so we'll done! I spent house at this visitor center. They even had a little cooler with water and sodas in...for just a dollar. Thank you for being reasonable with a price for a quick refreshment.
Jacquelyn ( — Google review
Enhance your visit to the area by stopping in the Visitor Center in Ashland. A great interactive experience shows the history and ecology. Learn about local wildlife with displays, live bird feeders, and a walking trail that familiarizes you with the landscape. If it’s raining, check out a movie in the auditorium. The rangers will be glad to help you plan your visit. Amanda was great at showing us which local waterfalls to visit and how to get the best chance to see the Northern Lights.
Ray S — Google review
If you are anywhere in the area this visitor’s center is well worth visiting. The main level features displays covering all aspects of the area from the formation of Lake Superior to mining, lumber production, fishing, farming, and much more. There are interactive displays and hand-on activities for children to keep them engaged. Make sure to go to the top for great views and walk the trail too.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Mainland Sea Caves

Mentioned on
1 list
Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Mainland Sea Caves in Algoma, Ontario offer a breathtaking winter wonderland experience. The towering waves of Lake Superior create stunning ice ridges and caves that are ideal for photography enthusiasts. However, visitors must bundle up in warm clothes and snowshoes to explore the caves. Due to climate change, these incredible natural formations could disappear within a few decades.
The hiking was up and down through the woods but nothing was too challenging. We went just past the bowl and turned around for a nice 6 mile hike. The views of some of the sea caves were astounding. There were also several nice benches to stop and catch your breath if needed. Parking was $5 and digital only, but took PayPal, Card, or venmo.
Dylan V — Google review
Nice there and back hike. None of the signs seem to agree on how long the trail is. It took me 13k steps to do it out to the end of the rock formations.
Daniel B — Google review
We went on a 2 1/2 hour boat tour of the islands. Able to see the caves, lighthouses, and the captain told us about each island. The weather was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed it
Marilyn K — Google review
This was a very cool hike. We did a little over 4 miles for the view we got. Could have gone further if we wanted. I would come back again, most likely in the winter for a different perspective. There was plenty of spaces to park.
Zach E — Google review
It was a really fun hike. Bring water on your hike! The 1.8 miles took us about 3.5 hrs to hike, hang out, and hike back. If we would have packed food and water, we would have hiked further. We were carrying a toddler with us as well. $5 to park a regular vehicle. You have to scan the QR code and fill out the info. Pay by cc.

Breath taking views seeing them. We took a boat tour of all the Apostle Islands and the Sea Caves which do not disappoint the majestic views made by nature are truly magnificent. We were lucky to see a family of Eagles nest and soar off from the Island.

Amazing. We went in October so the colors were outstanding. We'll go back when it's warmer to kayak the caves.

A fun find off the highway! The store has been around forever and has a great selection of products from household needs to tourist themed items, beer, food, and clothing! It has kept most of the original feel to the place and looks like a store from 100 years ago for the most part.

We LOVE Ehlers! The sandwiches are out of this world and the potsticker salad is my favorite meal. The products being sold are really well thought out and unique. I have two sweatshirts from here that I practically live in. You cant go wrong with corn or compost cookies either!

Cute general mercantile store in downtown Cornucopia off of 13. They have a good variety of items available for sale including a relatively good selection of food- with better for you brands and gluten free options- similar to a co-op. They also offer beverages, clothing, kids toys, home and hardware needs, handmade soaps, lotions and candles. They also offer some food items to go or eat in. Super cute, very nicely run shop with necessities and some fun items.
Jameson J — Google review
One of my most favorite stores on the planet! Definitely NOT your cliché average "gift" shop. Best variety of basically everything and new things everytime I visit! Love you guys!
Elise S — Google review
I absolutely love this place. Product selection is great, prices are reasonable, and service is always friendly.

Ceiliac Review: Super health food & ceiliac friendly shop! A cross between a grocery store, hardware store and gift shop. Tons of gluten free products including Udi's Burger Buns & Red Mill Pancake mix. Shop philosophy is definitely having access to healthy foods even while on a trip to the South Shore. Definitely worth a stop!

Fantastic trip. I am not an experienced kayaker so I was a bit intimidated to do the overnight options. I am glad I went for it. It was an incredible experience. Our guides Mason and Tony were incredible. They made the trip fun, easy, and memorable. Great sights, food, conversations, campfires...I could go on and on. Thanks guys!
Katie S — Google review
My husband and I did the full day kayak cave tour. The guides AJ & Megan were amazing and extremely knowledgeable. There were some crazy waves but they kept things calm and cool, which helped us feel safe. The lunch provided was delicious and exactly what we needed to refuel and continue on. We are excited to come back and do another tour.
Maddie S — Google review
I had a really fun time on the half day kayaking trip! The only suggestion i have is that I've only kayaked once and it was pretty tough as the waves were pretty high due to wind. Maybe add something on the website that sea kayaking is different than small lake or river kayaking as it seems a little more intense with the big waves which i would have liked to be warned about. Our guides were wonderful and very educational! I do wish we could have seen some more deep caves, but I'm assuming due to the waves/wind we couldn't. The length of the tour was good, we were just very tired on the way back!
Courtney B — Google review
We called ahead of our tour and spoke with Ellie, who was really helpful in providing us with detailed and accurate information. We saw it was supposed to rain the day we had scheduled to go kayaking, and Ellie was able to help us get the reservation changed to another day. Hunter helped us get set up with a tandem sit on top kayak to go out to Roman's Point, and showed us some tips and tricks on paddling and safety. Our second trip with them was the half day Meyers sea cave guided tour. Abby and Sam were fantastic and made the entire group feel comfortable and safe, gave plenty of time at each cave we could get inside, and showed the group a great time! Checking in with Azure was easy and she made sure we knew what to wear each day and what to expect. Highly recommend using this company if you want an adventure.
Savannah D — Google review
Great trip. Great guide Nancy Ann and gosh can't remember his name. But in my defense I was in tandem with Nancy. Very knowledgeable team. Calm day on the water. Canada smoke ruined the island views but the caves are amazing. Fun day. Definitely a great day drip.
Kimberly T — Google review
Awesome paddling experience with our guides Charlie and Ian. Both were very personable and the trip was well organized. We got lucky with really nice weather so the paddle was easy and enjoyable. Highly recommend hiking the lakeshore trail before / after to experience both sides of these iconic caves.
Jordan S — Google review
We LOVED our three hour kayak adventure! Izzy and Mason were our guides and they did such a fantastic job. The building in Cornucopia had nice bathrooms and changing areas. The tour was doable even for older folks in our group, although by the end I think we were all a bit tired. 10/10 recommend.
Nicole Z — Google review
We had an amazing time on our day long kayaking trip! Sam and Andy were great guides. They were professional, engaging and did an excellent job of sharing the history of Lake Superior and the caves we visited! Safety was first and foremost from start to finish!

I was here for the Birke with some friends and this place was amazing. It does need some small updates and improvements but overall this place has so much space and great features that made it so much fun to stay at. I thought the it looked great for being closed most of the past year. It is a shame they are having financial problems because the attractions it has are amazing. Airport, golf course, swimming pools, tennis, downhill skiing, many km of nordic ski trails, beautiful northwoods forests- what's not to like?? I hope they can get it turned around and stay in business because it would be sad to see a great place like this go...
Nick J — Google review
This place is definitely in rough shape. With the constant closures and everything, it's a miracle it still stands. The employees are doing a lot with the little they have. The rooms have a definite upgrade. The fresh furniture and updated bedding are wonderful. Staff is friendly. It's the building that brings it down. Water stains on ceiling tiles, peeling paint, bubbling carpet. The place is like a cheap rip off of The Shining. I would still recommend the place for the marathoner, the outdoors people. The place is best described a tarnished silver. It gets the job done but is ugly doing it. But give it some time and effort (and about a million dollars) and that place will be polished silver again.
Bud H — Google review
Their website boasts excellent customer service. Well we had to cancel our first night (weeks in advance) and when we came to check in on the revised night we were told since we cancelled the previous night, they won't let us check in early...really?! When we talked to the general manager, Robin, he said that they lose too much money checking people in early....seriously?! Definitely get a zero on customer service. Also, the website said that they get cable TV. Try a snowy screen and about 5 channels. When we called the front desk, they said that the reception won't get much better. NEVER coming back again. Will be telling all my Minneapolis friends to not come here and go to Lutsen instead.

A treasure of a find. This beautiful little museum is full of kind, knowledgeable staff, beautiful taxidermy, an awesome indoor kid play area with a flying squirrel and live reptiles in their terrariums, a seasonally? changing kids’ exhibit with lots of interactive learning, and a cool gift shop (great for educational gifts and books especially). They also have an incredible outdoor play scape right down the road that’s amazing in the summer. Free on Tuesdays, home schoolers!

We explored the subnivian exhibit and learned all about the world that exists under our feet. I learned far more than I expected, and the exhibit was incredibly interactive. From adult to child it was an incredible experience.

What an adorable spot. I bet little kids would love it, but as a woman in my 40s, I still had a great time. I definitely put on a little fox cape so I could experience being a little animal under the snow, but stopped short of playing in the acorn pit. A wide variety of ways to interact with exhibits, plentiful but approachable information about the area and wildlife. Respect and appreciation for the indigenous land stewards and history of the area they hold and share. I had too much fun to take many photos, but I did capture this little friend.

This museum is so well done. We went with a 3 year old who had a blast on the multiple slides, climbing areas, looking at the wildlife and learning along the way. This was a nice surprise for the area and is very worth a visit!

Wonderful learning experience. One of the geology staff spent time explaining the composition of a rock she had just collected from Lake Superior to my nine year old granddaughter. She encouraged her to explore the museum geology exhibit and learn how basalt was formed. The museum has many learning experiences for visitors.

Quaint little winery. Definitely a must stop. They have a 5 for $10 tasting that is definitely worth every dollar. We enjoyed everything we tasted and bought two bottles to take home. The lovely lady who was working was kind and very helpful with recommendations on what to see. Don’t miss this place!!

This is a smaller cider, mead brewery. They offer samples 5 for $10, or spirit samples 3 for $10. The meads are a sweet light crisp mead 9/10! Ciders are light and crisp as well most are semi dry 8/10. Really friendly and helpful staff. Would definitely recommend stopping in! Worth the trip!!

Great selections of Mead and Cider. Great people there. I love their Mead-jito. If John, an owner, is in and you want a refreshing drink without alcohol, ask for John's drink!
Peung ( — Google review
Disclaimer: Have not been to the meadery. This is just a review of 2 of their meads. I bought a bottle of the dry mead and a bottle of the black mead. I have to say, I'm not a fan of either of them. Too similar to dry wine. When I drink mead, I wanna be able to tell I'm drinking mead. There's almost zero honey character in either, in my opinion.

It was so fun to find this on our way home from Ashland, Wi. It’s such a treat to taste local products! Please visit this neat cozy place! I didn’t get to snap much photos but they do have all kinds of Mead drinks & ciders. The couple John and Kim (Hamilton?) has been running and making these local drinks for the past 28 years! We support local 💯 and they deserve to be recognized more. They are lovely and kind people which makes it an impressive impression, surely! There are toys for kids to get busy with too! But the real deal is the challenge they give to kids with cup & ball, not sure about the name of the game but if you visit you’ll know! Cheers to more Wisconsin place to discover ☺️

It’s amazing to find a hidden gem like that in the middle of the woods. I enjoyed so much visiting this beautiful place. Every piece of glass, it’s just a piece of art, amazing colors and shapes. Sui, the owner was very nice telling us the histories about how the start the business and her husband design the house. Something else that I love for this place, is the collection of tea pots that they have in the garden. Sui’s mother has collecting them for many years. If you have a chance, don’t hesitate to stop at this marvelous art place.

The Two Harbors Lighthouse Museum in Two Harbors, Minnesota is a must-visit attraction for those who love the outdoors and history. Situated on the North Shore of Lake Superior, it offers stunning views of Agate Bay and Burlington Bay. The oldest operating lighthouse in Minnesota, it provides a picturesque backdrop for picnics and guided tours inside the lighthouse itself.
Great historical stop. We not only walked out to the light house on the jetty but also toured the old light house and grounds. Even made it up the 47 stairs to view out the windows.
Teresa P — Google review
Glad we decided to stop here, it was unexpectedly beautiful! It costs $5 to go back to the lighthouse but it is plenty visible from outside if you don’t want to pay. The lighthouse itself is a bed and breakfast so you can’t go up to the top but you can walk through the bottom half as well as a few other buildings, there was an informative video playing. The area out back is a must with the black rocks right on the water (accessible for free).

sorry about pictures lol, on May 29th that day was sunny 🌞 n cloudy mixed 😅 by the time we got to 2 harbor Duluth lighthouse n it was cloudy, less visitors and it was great for taking 😀, love it and enjoy walking to lighthouse, local guy didn't catch anything while we had little chats. since it was cloudy n windy walked around lighthouse, we didn't really clearly what it was in the water in cloudy day. but we took lots fun pictures, on the way to lighthouse and we stopped at McQuade small restaurant n tiny parking lot, since not schools off yet, there were not many visitors in Duluth, it was easy parking n really fast got our late lunch orders at 2pm. the foods we got chicken salad, chicken was too dry n too salty n small portion for me, the patty burger n patty was too dry too, but i do recommend no bread deep fry chicken wings come with side French fries, both really crispy but salty for my liking 😋. service was good too. there were 4 construction on the way to 2 harbor Duluth, but it was ok for us driving since it was not peak season, but it looked like more state patrol on the way lol, when we came n we lost cellphone signal couple times and we used Google map lol, otherwise we had good time to 2 harbor Duluth. rest areas we stopped were both nice n clean, wish n hope they can put gas stations n restaurant in the rest area like other states, so we can just 1 stop to get what we want for long trip lol. thx ❤️

A quaint lighthouse to visit. It is a B&B as well. This lighthouse was part lighthouse and living quarters for the keepers. It even had the original oil house as well where they stored the oil. The gift shop shop was the extra fog house. On site was also a pilot house from an old ship. Great history notes and photos in both places. Lots of trails to walk on. Yu can also walk out to the point where the other fog horn lighthouse is. Unfortunately, some of it was tagged. There is a little beach to relax and wade in the water. definitely worth a trip to.

Castle Danger Brewery is a popular spot in downtown Two Harbors, offering a wide range of legendary beers known for their balanced and approachable flavors. The brewery features a 30 barrel brewing system, canning line, and a contemporary yet rustic taproom with an outdoor patio overlooking Lake Superior. Visitors can enjoy tasting the delectable brews while taking in the fresh breeze from the lake.
I’ve been to dozens and dozens breweries in many different states and after much contemplation I declared this to be my favorite! Every pour is delicious. The landscaping and layout are so beautiful, plenty of seating, quiet/private table conversation because of the way the seating is arranged outside. Tons of games. Adorable gift shop. The food truck was fabulous. Snacks and ice cream were top notch.
Angela Z — Google review
Great spot to enjoy some beer and the company of others. We sampled several flights and spent a few hours here playing games (provided free by the bar). We had pizza delivered right to our table from nearby Do North. We didn’t particularly enjoy many of the beers and the bartender was particularly unpleasant. It’s not the most welcoming service which is unfortunate, given what a lovely atmosphere the place had outside of this interaction.
Stefanie G — Google review
Castle Danger is a must-stop brewery on the North Shore. The beer flights are fantastic and give you a chance to try a wide range of their special brews. They also have seltzer options for gluten-free drinkers, which is a nice touch. The food truck adds solid food options, and the taproom has a fun, relaxed vibe with board games available. Great beer, great atmosphere, and a spot worth hanging out at.
Chloe — Google review
We visited on a Saturday afternoon and it was very busy. We sat at the bar and were serviced quickly but later had trouble getting anyone’s attention so we decided to cash out. We went to the “take home beer” area were able to sample a few beers there and ended up purchasing some to-go beer. The Aurora Haze and West Coast IPA’s were good but the Maple Marzen was a big surprise as I normally do not like this style of beer.
Scott S — Google review
Castle Danger is an iconic brewery near the North Shore and worth stopping by if you're a brew lover. The outdoor atmosphere is relaxing and chill on a nice day and the indoor vibe is cozy when ole superior brings the cooler temperatures or rain. My personal recommendation: A pint of Castle Cream Ale 🍻

A beautiful spot for a pint or two. Lots of seating indoors and a huge patio area. Nut Brown Ale was fabulous. Family friendly, lots of games and outdoor activities for kids and adults. Tons Logging Camp is such a cool place. I'm not even a tourist and I love coming here. They have a great selection of local novelty items, hoodies, shirts, hats, jewelry and even some local snacks. In the little restaurant they serve great ice cream in sandwiches. Everybody is always friendly and ready to tell you some of the local history. If it's your first time make sure you take the tour, it's only five bucks and it's very interesting. Even if you're a local, you should check this place out it's a lot of fun.

Amnicon Falls State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Park
Nature park featuring waterfalls & rapids on the Amnicon River, trails & camping.
So many waterfalls to see during an interesting and varied hike. We parked in the first available parking lot off of County Road U and then hiked along the edge of the river on the nicely maintained path. The river churns and rolls along next to you as you walk, and the sound and interesting features of the water movement above and below the falls make the hike so enjoyable. After crossing the bridge, don't miss the chance to hike around the island and check out Snake Pit Falls on the far side. It was the most picturesque of them all! The hike around the island is a little more challenging than along the river. Watch your footing throughout the park as it is easy to trip over the rocks and roots on the paths.
Chanelle S — Google review
This is one of my favorite spots thus far. So much to see here. We hiked for 3.5 hours and could have truly stayed all day. There are so many waterfalls and picturesque stops. The trails have ones less traveled and still get you back to the trails easy enough to explore and not stress about being lost.
ASHLEY Q — Google review
Loved our stay! This campsite was perfect for a relaxing weekend getaway. It had everything we needed—fire pit, picnic table, and just the right amount of space between sites to feel private without being isolated. The campground was clean, peaceful, and well-maintained. Pro tip: there are no fancy bathrooms, so be prepared to rough it a bit—but that’s part of the charm! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a simple, enjoyable escape outdoors.
Brennan R — Google review
If you love waterfalls, this wonderful park has several that you can get right in front of, on top of, below, and to the sides. As long as you're sure-footed, you can really get all over them here! You can even swim right up to them in a few spots, like the Lower Falls section. The trails here are nice, wide, and easy-going for the most part (there are some roots and rocks, but nothing terrible). There are picnic tables and grills scattered around, and a lot of places to sit on the ground for a more traditional picnic with incredible scenery. There are several parking locations throughout, and each has some incredibly picturesque views nearby. Not much in the way of playground equipment that I saw, just a swingset, but there may be more in the campground area (didn't go over to that part). I didn't notice any shelters, other than the historic covered bridge. Not a deterrent for me, but something to keep in mind if you visit on a rainy day. This is well worth visiting even from across the country (or from other countries). If you're visiting Wisconsin, this should definitely be on your list. If you live here, but have never been, this is one of the places in our state you should go out of your way to see at least once in your life. This place is absolutely gorgeous and so worth the drive! As a side note, not really of any importance to anyone other than me, this review finally puts me at level 10 on Maps. Almost a decade of adding pictures and places, making videos and reviews. I've always had an incredibly strong wanderlust and love of picture-taking. It brings me great joy showing people the weird and beautiful places to visit in our state (and country). My hope is that I have helped to inspire others to get out and explore, and maybe shown people things they didn't even know existed. I've been all over our country, and Wisconsin is an incredibly beautiful place that I don't think most people realize. Time spent outdoors here is time well spent!

This state park is open year-round and offers some beautiful sightings of nature. There are plenty of outdoor recreational activities available from camping, hiking, hunting and fishing to picnic areas and swimming. We enjoyed walking the trails and exploring all the geological views as well.

Those Falls are just beautiful I've never seen waterfalls like that before they are just gorgeous and that I just felt so connected.

This is a great, underappreciated park. It’s small, but tends to be less crowded and you have great access to the waterfalls. It’s a much smaller, more intimate version of Copper Falls. The covered bridge is a really neat, unique feature of this park. We visited on a fall drive and returned a couple years later to camp. While you’re here it’s also a quick drive over to Pattison State Park to see the tallest waterfall in Wisconsin: Big Manitou Falls

Not much too see. Falls are Low. We need rain. Tree look diseased with green lime Growth all over them and the rocks. A lot dead trees down. Bad side rail loose and falling apart. Camp ground very nice.

Bar atmosphere. No blaring music 👍🏼A few tables to eat at. Sandy was an excellent waitress. All you can eat broasted chicken and/or deep fried cod, yes, you can get both on the same order! Served with a breadstick, fries or wedges, and coleslaw. Scrumptious food!
T T — Google review
It’s just a fun place to go to when you’re in the Northland. Good food, friendly service and great bottoms up beer selections. So glad they have a salad menu now. The new owners are awesome!
Cindy G — Google review
Circle Pines has been around for years. They are especially known for their pizza. Haven't had the pizza in years as the last time we did, I think the cook went a little nuts with the red pepper flakes. That's water under the bridge. Friday night's menu includes AYE fish fry or fried chicken for $17.99. The fish is cod and you get a nice large fillet. Fries, Cole Slaw, and a hot bread stick are included. Everything was fresh and tasty. The fillets of subsequent orders of fish are about half the size of the original. Tables are a mix of standard and high top. There's not a ton of parking. It gets busy even before 5 pm, so plan accordingly.

Circle Pines has always been a solid place, but it looks like the new owners have figured out a way to take things up a few notches. The bar and restaurant looks to have a fresh clean or paint. Not sure which. Friendly service, nice beer draft list and the broasted chicken was awesome.
Dave N — Google review
Very good burgers… small but decent beer selection. And broasted chicken looked and smelled awesome!

We always look forward to a stop in to Circle Pines when we're up north!! The pizza is AMAZING.... don't go in starving on a Friday night because it is always packed because it's such an amazing place!! It is a fantastic, fun atmosphere with great customers and friendly staff!

AYCE fish was ok the service was extremely slow. It was almost an hour before we got our food and at least another 45.minutes to get another piece of fish.

Pizza with sauerkraut is the best! MUST HAVE! MUST TRY! If you are in this area don't pass this bar! Very clean and pleasant atmosphere.

Sights & Landmarks
Glensheen Mansion, situated in Duluth, Minnesota, is a historic house museum that offers tours of its 39-room mansion and extensive grounds. Originally constructed in 1908 by the influential Congdon family, this architectural masterpiece boasts Jacobean Revival design and breathtaking views of Lake Superior. Visitors can explore the well-preserved interior with original furnishings and learn about the estate's rich history during guided tours.
The grounds and mansion are beautiful! We’ve done several mansion tours around the country and this was the largest, best preserved site we’ve seen. Unfortunately it was 90+ degrees the day we visited and that kept us from fully enjoying it, it is very warm inside the mansion on a hot day, but worth the walk through. We did appreciate the fans set up in every room. I recommend buying tickets ahead of time as entry is timed, we weren’t sure what time we’d be there so we bought tickets when we arrived and waited about an hour. We did the self guided full tour, $64 for two people - again, we felt it was worth it. It’s set up with ropes and signs so it’s always obvious where you should be going next and staff is scattered throughout. We walked through more quickly than we normally would due to the heat, it took us about 45 mins but I could see it taking longer if you stop to read everything. Highly recommend checking it out.

Walked the grounds with my niece and sister, loved being able to explore the space outside the mansion after years of taking the indoor tour and skipping the outside portion. Pictures from the 20th of August. It was only 5 dollars for the grounds pass.
Rachel ( — Google review
This is truly the most amazing place. The woodwork and craftsmanship were the best I have seen. Most rooms where done in different woodwork and supplies from all over the word. Grounds and home have been well taken care of.
Cindy N — Google review
This is definitely the most impressive mansion tour I've taken. Everything is set up to be very authentic to the period. We took the self-guided tour, which I highly recommend since they have many interpretive markers to read for more information about the room and history.
Tim S — Google review
Holy smokes this place was awesome. Wife and I are into touring mansion museums when traveling and we really appreciated the full self guided tour. Would recommend doing the tour that gets you into the attic and upstairs areas. Colin was an awesome source of information and you can tell that he enjoys sharing.

This place is awesome! A must see! It's just amazing the amount of money and work that went into building this house in the early 1900s! So modern for its day! The woodworking is just exquisite! And the stable is, wow, like a house, not a barn! We went on a self guided tour for $20 per person. A great tour because the path is marked out so well! And the yard and gardens are just beautiful!
Susan C — Google review
This was a nice in door tour of the mansion. You'll be walking around the rooms and reading family history. There's also a sea shell scavenger hunt which made it fun. There's not a lot of places during the tour to take a break and have a seat but otherwise there's some out door patio furniture once you get outside where you can relax and enjoy the view of the beautiful lake. There's also military discounts, UMD student discounts and elderly discounts as well. Definitely a nice tour if you're into history and architecture.
JayDoo V — Google review
Excellent self-guided tour. Beautiful early turn of the century (1905) mansion. Beautiful views of Lake Superior. Our teens enjoyed that the tour was self paced so they went fast and hung out on the beach and hammocks while we went slower.

Sights & Landmarks
The Aerial Lift Bridge is a historic landmark in Duluth, spanning the Duluth Ship Canal and providing stunning views of the bustling harbor and Lake Superior. Originally constructed in 1905 as a transporter bridge, it was later converted to a lift bridge and has become one of the busiest bridges in the United States. The bridge's deck can be raised 135 feet to accommodate large ships passing through.
We were in Duluth for the day and decided to check out the Aerial Lift Bridge. We've seen the Aerial Lift Bridge on some YouTube videos but this was our first time seeing it in person. We got to watch it raise and lower a couple of times, very cool. Also got to snag a Geocache while we were on the bridge.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Aerial Lift Bridge is such an unforgettable icon of Duluth. Watching it gracefully rise to let ships through while boat horns echo across the water—thrilling! The canal surroundings are full of energy, from tourists snapping photos to fishermen casting lines. It’s a landmark that’s equally dramatic, historic, and deeply tied to the character of the North Shore. Great place to tour with the Vista Fleet Scenic Tour
Peter H — Google review
Such a great icon in the city of the Duluth which is the Minnesota seaway. Fun to drive or walk over. Neat to see the road lift to allow boats and barges pass through. Next to Canal Park which is full of shops and restaurants. Fun place to discover.

It was amazing to both see and drive this bridge. It has beautiful architecture, and it was great to see it raise and lower

Just a very cool place to go and watch the ships (usually ore ships) come in. There's a museum and small gift shop. Not far to several restaurants and ice cream and shopping.
Sherri D — Google review
Fun watching the ships and boats come and go. Fun to watch the bridge lift and be lowered to allow the ships and boats to pass through. Lots to see and great place for a walk.
Heather S — Google review
An interesting city with a unique bridge. We were hoping to see a big ship, but did get to see it go up for a smaller vessel. A great downtown area to visit.
C J — Google review
This 1930's Army Corps of Engineers built bridge is a wonderful machine at over 90 years old. Watching those 500 tonight counterweights balance out the 1,000 ton span is cool to watch. It looks quite similar to the Cape Cod Canal bridge.

Great time on the train and at the museum! My wife loves trains and really enjoyed this experience. We got to chat with the conductor, who was kind, informative, and easy to speak to. The other staff on the train and at the museum were great too. It was easy to walk around on the train and see the fall colours/landscapes/lake. Definitely recommend

My husband and I did the Two Harbors Turnabout ride this week. It’s a relaxing and informative time. You get about 2 hours in Two Harbors for lunch and walking around. It’s plenty of time. My rating is mostly based in the disappointing views from the train. The pictures and descriptions led me to believe the views of the lake would be better. You pretty much see the lake in Duluth and then in Two Harbors. There are brief glimpses in other places but you mostly see trees.

This was our 2nd year going on the "Pumpkin Ride". It was so awesome. It was a beauitful day, fantastic service! Everyone was over the top helpful! We will be making this an annual event. The museum events were amazing, my grand kids absolutely love this annual trip. We highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this train ride. Everyone was super nice. The views were so beautiful. It was very informative and super relaxing..It was pretty full of people the day we went. We had never been on this train before. I told my friends they gotta come and check it out. Its totally worth it. It was nice sitting on one side of the train one way and trading with a couple so they could see the side we were on which had the water views and we got to see the land views with the trees and houses for the way back. The trip to duluth from the twin cities was incredibly beautiful and cinematic with all the fall colors in full swing. It was the best day trip! We went on Oct. 18th. I includes a few videos of the sunset and the fall colors as well as a lake near duluth.

Pumpkin Train was fun and the kids loved moving about the train and the views from dome car were amazing. The tickets said snacks and drinks included but we only received one drink and no snacks (we had to buy them). I was disappointed in that only. Also, note that you stop at a yard with pumpkins set out - you don't actually stop at a pumpkin patch. All in all fun but would suggest NSSR to fix their wording or elaborate on services provided for dome car. I felt like $55/seat was a little expensive for a can of pop or alcohol beverage, 1 pumpkin and the short ride.

Took the 16mile Northwoods Train Ride- appx 2.5 hrs. Very enjoyable! The weather was fantastic for Oct 26th 2025 a Sunday. Train staff were friendly. Soda, Beer, candy and chips available for purchase with our general ride ticket.

This is a Minnesota Bucket List event. I went on the Pizza Ride and haven’t had this much fun in along time. This ride is very kid friendly. I stood in the train car that had the bar and open doors on it. The scenic part isn’t as good as the train ride itself, but there was some good stuff there. Spoiled with a nice warm cookie near the end of the ride tops off this little pizza ride gem, I highly recommend this. Enjoy…
