I went on this excursion because my friend had this on her bucket list, really didn’t want to go. I was so glad I did! This was hands down THE best excursion I’ve ever been on in all of my cruise travels. The experience was engaging-right from the moment we entered the property. Patrick was informative and a wonderful start to this amazing visit. His relationship with the wolves was mesmerizing. Then you get to meet The Host, Mr. Kroschel. I was blown away by the depth and breadth of his knowledge and by just how much he truly cares. He wears it like the incredible badge of honor it is. His animals are beautifully housed, the area looking as if it were put together by a mad genius-which it was. I was immediately smitten. With all of it. Lock, stock and barrel, as my Gram used to say. The time seemed to be over in a blink and I was sad and reluctant to leave. The connection you felt coming from him; connection to his animals, his surroundings and his guests was laser sharp and awe-inspiring to witness-that’s how I felt-I was witnessing true genius and great heart. I left a grateful woman.

I LOVED this place, and if you're an animal lover, you will as well. Steve was great and made the tour fun & interactive. It's definitely a better environment than a zoo, but that also removes a level of safety for kids and dumb people lol. I hope Steve is able to keep living his dream of caring for animals in a natural environment for many years to come. If your ship excursion is full, I *think* chillkat tours is who you can call, or get ahold of the center and they'll link you up.
Debra — Google review
Steve is a knowledgeable host that clearly has a close bond with his animals. Patrick really made my visit so memorable, making sure my sister, son & his fiance and I had one on one time with the animals. I wish I would have gotten a photo with him. I wanted to stay in one of their cabins and never leave. I look at my photos every day. The porcupine was my favorite. And I'm from there, not even a tourist. I returned to Seattle and still think about The Wildlife Center every day.
Katrina H — Google review
I would give this 6 stars if I could. We went as part of a cruise ship excursion and everything was amazing from the bus driver to everyone working there. The animals were well cared for and we got amazing photos. We had a 2 year old with us and you will need to watch kids closely as these are wild animals (no fingers in fences!). Like others said it was a decent amount of walking on dirt paths and not stroller friendly. There was a gift shop at the end. There were also a couple of bathrooms.
Amanda W — Google review
Interesting place where it is obvious that there is much love and care for the animals here. Informative tour overall. The only downfall is that the tour group was too large so it made it uncomfortable to stand around and wait your turn to see the animals. I think that our tour could have been split into 2 groups instead of one large one. The bus ride from the cruise port was great. The bus driver was EXTREMELY interesting and full of fun stories. The bus ride to and from the Kroschel Wildlife Centre was one of our most favorite bus rides in all of the tours we have taken... and we take A LOT!!!
Tori C — Google review
We had such a great day at the Center. Mr. Kroschel was a great story teller of the animals. We learned so much and enjoyed each and every animal we were able to see. Our bus driver, was excellent. She told us so many local stories and helped us spot wildlife along the way. If you are not sure if you should do this tour or another. Choose this one. You will be happy you did.
Julie W — Google review
Toured the center as an excursion via Princess Cruise Lines and by far one of my favorite excursions of the trip. Connecting to animals was amazing and my daughter had a blast. She was very fond of Duck Henry and his caribou neighbors, although her joy of feeding them may leader to an ungulate obesity epidemic.
Derek H — Google review
What an amazing experience. This is by far one of if not THE best excursions I've taken while cruising. Steve, Mario and Mario's daughter were fantastic. They are information and use humor to keep things lively. They should be nominated for a humanitarian award for all that they do for education and the environment. This is a long review so in the words of Steve. "Hey Mario, they are losing interest so it's time to move along"

Glacier Bay was as breathtaking as it was 20 years ago, although it appeared smaller this time. My family and I saw the glacier from the Norwegian Sun cruise ship. The Norwegian Sun seemed less grand than I remembered. Specifically, the food and service on the ship were not as impressive. I'm considering trying out Royal Caribbean for my next cruise.

This place was pretty amazing. It's a great cultural museum with some pretty cool artifacts and great historical information. It's also a great place when camping in the fall to warm up in the very clean heated bathroom and to do some trip planning on the free wifi. There is also a territorial and a national park information centers in the same building. Great information about the Kluane national park here.

Awesome. Lots of history. Would recommend people stop there and check it.out.

A must-see if you are spending any time in the Haines Junction/Kluane area. With information on the rich history of the area and First Nations culture, as well as many artifacts and local art features. If you love the outdoors (and you should if you're around here!) they have maps. In the summer they have staff to help you choose hiking trails in the area and rent bear cannisters.

Beautiful building! Great, hard-working staff. Amazing collection of local stories and historical artifacts. A great resource for both community members and visitors.

Before embarking on your adventure in Kluane National Park and Reserve, make sure to stop by the Kluane National Park Visitor Centre located in Haines Junction. This gem is a treasure trove of information, offering insights into trails, weather updates, and wildlife safety tips—especially regarding bears. The friendly rangers are eager to assist with any questions you may have. The centre itself is beautifully designed and filled with engaging exhibits that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the area.
Great place for information about Kluane. It's very clean and the staff were happy to help. There are also many informative exhibits.

A serene and a place everyone must go and see the beauty and wilderness of Yukon. Must take a glacier tour on a plane . Expensive but worth doing this life time experience for 1.5-2 hrs flight time from Hains Junction by Glacier yours. Daniel was our pilot and he is a amazing guys and tool us to near the mount Logan and Many other glaciers on the way .

Beautiful building with an abundance of information! All the staff were super helpful and hold a rich tapestry of local knowledge. They gave us some great information on some local hikes we had planned, also we got our bear barrels from here. The cultural centre was very special. Awesome to learn about this unique and heritage rich part of the world.

Amazing visitor centre. Lots of interesting information. A well stocked, reasonably priced souvenir store. Very friendly and well educated staff. Highly recommended!
Kari H — Google review
If you visit the National Park side of the building, you should also visit the Da Ku Cultural Centre on the other side! Richard is a skilled and knowledgeable ambassador and storyteller, and the displays and team are amazing. You will learn about current and past policy, governance, culture, and worldview of Champagne and Aishihik First Nations as well as traditional routes throughout Dakwäkäda and the rest of the territory. If you visit in the winter, the National Park Centre is closed, but the Cultural Centre is still open by appointment. Both are wonderful and worth the visit.

Other reviewers here justifiably praise their experience on the flight tours into the icefields of Kluane Park in the shadow of Mt Logan. Many landed at the base camp and enjoyed a short time on the ground to walk about, marvel at the views and take memorable photos. We were two of those who opted to stay for a couple of nights at the camp and experience the majesty of the surroundings for an extended period. Waking up to a sun-bathed ocean of snow surrounded by Mt Logan, Mt Queen Mary and other mountains, as well as numerous nunataks (peaks of smaller mountains poking through the snow) was extremely special. Skiing or snowshoeing to some of the closer features added greatly to the experience. Our leader/guide, Sian Williams single handedly took care of us throughout our time on the icefields, always with a mind to safety and capabilities of all participants. Our experiences on the icefields will be forever engraved in our minds
Stephen W — Google review
Had an absolutely epic experience on the Pilatus PC-6, seeing the icefields up close is one of the best experiences in my life! Thanks to the pilot Felix for being so knowledgeable in the area and for flying the plane professionally. Will definitely be doing it again the next time I'm here!
Naturallyherb — Google review
Although our original plan was to view the majestic Mount Logan, excessive cloud cover necessitated a change to the Icefield Discovery Tour departing from the Yukon region. This adjustment proved to be an exceptional decision, as the tour was truly fantastic, offering unparalleled aerial perspectives of the vast St. Elias Icefields, which extend up to 3 kilometers in depth and 60 kilometers in length. Operated by Icefield Discovery, the approximately two-hour flightseeing experience begins near Kluane Lake and follows the winding path of the Kaskawulsh Glacier, ascending through the dramatic mountain divide. Participants are treated to breathtaking vistas of pristine glaciers, rugged peaks, and expansive ice formations that highlight the raw power of nature in Kluane National Park. For those selecting enhanced options, the tour includes a glacier landing, allowing a brief exploration on foot amid the ancient ice, accompanied by insightful commentary from experienced pilots. Overall, this excursion provides a profound appreciation for one of the world's largest non-polar icefields, making it a highly recommended activity for any visitor to the Yukon.
Francis H — Google review
Thanks to our pilot Sam, had a great trip to see the magnificent Mount Logan! It was a beautiful day and awesome to learn about the local geography. Lucky enough to have good weather! Consider adding an extra 10-15 mins into your estimated travel time to the airstrip as there is on going road works.
Tomazina K — Google review
I tended not to give a negative review, given that they operate at a remote location and the communication before the flight was good. However, I must give a three-star review given the three facts. First, one of the male staff members was cold despite the fact that I had made a reservation in advance (several months). Further, I am not sure what exactly his role is in the team, except for weighing passengers. Second, the prior communication was to put us in a private group. Yet, on the day of the flight, we were not alone, and with three others, we made it a group of six. I am fine with a larger group, but more business smart if they could inform us in advance (several hours for instance). Then, the aircraft is extremely tight, and the window is not as clean as some of the other tours we joined. These combinations made it very difficult to take good pictures.
Ze Z — Google review
We started the morning in cloudy Haines Junction and decided to call and see what the weather forecast was like. Sam assured us the previous flight was a success so off we went. This was the highlight of our trip. Sam was a wealth of information and added to the experience. This is an experience we will never forget. Breath taking, varied terrains, and more colourful then we could imagine! Landing on the ice field and taking in the beautiful surroundings was incredible! Thanks Sam! To all of you reading this review we highly recommend this experience with Icefield Discoveries.
Deborah K — Google review
Can't recommend this tour enough for the nature and glacier enthusiasts!!! We wanted to do something epic for our 10 year wedding anniversary and what better way to spend it on a private skiplane tour to view the tallest mountain in Canada and land on a glacier in the Yukon!! We were all in awe and left speechless. Our pilot, Felix, was an amazing tourguide! Hope to run into you in the future at Crankworx! Unforgettable life experience 💙

Great little museum, fun facts and animal dioramas
Andrew E — Google review
We saw this mentioned in The Milepost and stopped to visit. This is an incredible museum. It is well kept, very thorough, and is really a lot larger than you think it is. It was not very expensive. The staff was so welcoming. Right next to the museum is the huge gold mining pan. You have to stop for a picture.
Donna S — Google review
An amazing the Kluan museum of history at Yukon, Canada. Excellent exhibition! Thank you to the founders and organizers! Very neat, excellent quality of taxidermy, great space for group visitors. There is an audio accompaniment to the exhibition with the sounds of birds and animals. I highly recommend this museum for a visit.
Victoriya S — Google review
This is a treasure not to miss. Do NOT be fooled by the modest exterior....WHEN you stop to see the huge miners pan with a mural painted on it, DO stop and go inside. Displays of local animal life that are world class and are most excellent. A few displays on the local native craft work and art as well. They allow over night parking for free as well.
Richard F — Google review
This was one of the most impressive museums I have ever visited. The native handiwork, clothing, and beadwork were amazing. The displays of native wildlife were outstanding and the descriptions short enough to not be overwhelming. Other museums should take their lead from this one. You won’t be disappointed if you visit.
Mark B — Google review
To be honest I figured you see one small town museum you've seen them all. Boy was I wrong! This museum is very well put together with dioramas and displays. There is a movie that loops so if you have time to sit and watch it's interesting. It takes about half an hour of really looking at the exhibits or 15 minutes of less on a run through. The movie is another half hour or so. This is one museum that is well worth the stop and it's only $5 cdn per adult! Talk about a steal.

Nestled in the charming town of Chicken, Alaska, Chicken Gold Camp & Outpost offers a unique blend of camping and historical exploration. Situated along the Top of the World Highway, this RV campground provides an opportunity for visitors to try their hand at gold panning while immersing themselves in the town's quirky ambiance. The site also features educational tours at the Pedro Gold Dredge and Mining Museum, shedding light on the area's rich mining history.
Rough road leading to a very pleasant surprise: 2025 "Chickenfest"! We did not have tickets, so I did not stay, but it was shaping up to be a good time for those that did.
Jeff F — Google review
Pulled in for a night’s sleep. Pit toilets, coin-operated showers, plenty of room for my campsite. The tent sites are not tucked in to trees; they are exposed. If all you need is a bit of sleep, it’s perfect. If you are looking for a scenic, cozy place to hang out for a few days, not so much.
Jim G — Google review
First off, you aren't in Chicken unless you want to be in Chicken. Hours of dirt roads to get here, so location is 5 stars... As you have reached your destination! We rented a medium cabin and it is a dry cabin, no plumbing. We had a king bed and a twin bed and a propane heater. That's it! But it is a good price at $60. Definitely, the least expensive place you will find anywhere in pricey Alaska. Internet WiFi is Starlinkz but its hokey to login and your limited to 1 mb speed which means you can just get your email and send some texts and when I closed my browser it closed the connection and would take the fancy individual code again. Its just hokey. Really, just expect no WiFi... And of course there is absolutely no cell service there either. No lights in the cabins, so bring a flashlight. Staff was okay and friendly. Showers are in a separate building and cost a ridiculous $1 per minute, this is likely due to the whole place being off grid and heating water takes a lot of power. Like I said, take it as it is, it will be good. Best northern light views we have ever seen.
John F — Google review
A clean and quiet campground. Bathrooms were messy and extremely small. The shower was $1.00 per minute, and the water was warm at best. The staff was friendly and courteous. The location is a goldmine. There is a bar nearby, and the bartender was fantastic. We believe he made the stop worthwhile.

So i know I didn't write the previously posted review, I love love love Chicken Gold Camp. It's my Favorite place,a nice far from society's hustles, the family that owns and runs is amazing.Their gift shop has things you won't find anywhere else, the foods they make in the restaurant are delicious and made to order! They have a great gold Dredge tour on site and fun gold panning. A great place to just Breathe in Alaskan skies and rest...

It’s just an odd and interesting place. Chicken Gold Camp is a gem in the middle of nowhere. If you happen to be in the area, a for sure stop.

Nice remote camp with very good food quality and shopping for the gals. Very clean buildings with friendly staff

Perfect place to camp if you visit the Top of the world highway. We drycamped here without electricity or water. It's more of a big parking lot, but you have your own space and picknick table. During our stay a lot of gold miners were staying here. Bit loudly sometimes but okay. If you want, and there are enough participants, you can visit the dredge on their site.

St. Elias Alpine Guides is one of the best guide companies in Alaska, offering half-day outings to 15-day expeditions for a great value. They provide all necessary gear and food, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a wilderness experience without prior rafting knowledge. The company's well-trained guides ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure.
We thoroughly enjoyed our mill tour with Carson. For it being only his second tour, he was very knowledgeable and didn’t miss a beat! On the mill tour, you get a quick walk and talk about a few buildings, then you go uphill and actually start the mill tour at the top of this 14 story building. Wonderful views out of the windows and a lot of the inside still intact with machinery and all. Well worth the money!

The 4-Day Basecamp hiking trip with SEAG was the best part of our travels in Alaska. The entire staff is extremely welcoming, helpful, and knowledgeable, and made our trip planning a breeze! Our guide Charlie was super knowledgeable about the terrain and history of the Wrangells and taught us many backcountry skills throughout our trip. He was always making sure we were comfortable and having fun. After our return from the backcountry, Charlie showed us around town and had great recommendations for activities to continue our adventure during our free days in McCarthy. Booking with SEAG is must if you are visiting McCarthy, AK wether you are looking for a short 1 day activity or a multi day expedition you will be in good hands! Thanks a ton to Anya, Charlie, and all of the staff at SEAG for making our trip and unforgettable experience!!

Did the ice cave exploration tour on Aug 6. This was an absolutely stunning experience — we’d never seen anything like this before or even imagined it could exist outside of movies (think Frozen come to life!). The scenery was breathtaking, and exploring three incredible ice caves felt surreal. Our guide picked us up at 8:30 AM from the McCarthy side of the Kennicott River Footbridge, kept us safe with the safety helmets, constant safety tips, and captured plenty of great photos for us along the way. Her care, flexibility, and willingness to adapt made the day all the more memorable. The tour was advertised as a 5.5–6 hour adventure (9:00 AM to about 2:30/3:00 PM), but we were initially on track to finish by 12:30 PM. I mentioned this to our guide and expressed my disappointment — and she immediately went above and beyond to make sure we left happy. She took us on an extra hike to the Root Glacier viewpoint, extending our trip to about 1:30 PM before driving us back to the starting point by 1:45. Overall, a fun and beautiful Alaskan adventure!

We signed up for the St. Elias Alpine Guides tour of the Kennecott Mill so that we could go inside the restricted buildings, and it was well worth it. Our guide was both knowledgeable and funny, and being able to go inside the mill added a lot to our experience of the historic site. The tour through the mill does include a fairly steep hike to the top first, and lots of stairs and ladders inside for coming back down through the building.

We did the mill tour and the full day glacier hike with em. It's a must do if you are visiting Kennicott. The knowledge of the guides is amazing and while you can do the glacier hike on your own, it's must more fun and extensive with the guides. Big thumbs up for Logan and Cat for the glacier hikes and Charlie for the mill tour!!!

Caroline was our guide and she made the Mill tour exceptional. We hiked to the top of the mill and worked our way down inside it. Caroline took the time to explain how the copper ore was processed and her knowledge was impressive.

We just finished the Bergs to Beaches 7-day trip with SEAG and it was a fabulous experience. The terrain was very challenging but the views were so rewarding. Our guide Stella was amazing. She confidently guided us through many challenges and attended to all of our needs. She prepared amazing meals from the SEAG cookbook and they did not disappoint. This trip is not for the faint of heart but if you’re up for a challenge then I highly recommend. 10/10 would do again!

Highly recommend KWG! I did their 1/2 day packrafting trip, and 1/2 day trip to the Root glacier. My guides, Ry, Finley, and Marguerite were all super friendly and made the excursions memorable. I was staying at the Kennicott Wilderness Lodge, so the KWG location could not be beat- literally at the bottom of their steps so a convenient meet up location! Also a special shout out to Katy- she helped me plan and book my few days in McCarthy/Kennicott including transportation, lodging, and excursions with KWG. I was overwhelmed with all the options doing it on my own and could not have done it without her help!

Our guide Findlay with KWG was the best! We had a great day with him hiking into the Root Glacier. He was very informative about the history of Kennecott, the mountains, and various areas on the glacier. He made sure we were prepared with the right gear and was gracious to take pictures of my husband and I. We soaked in all the sights and enjoyed our day. Highly recommend a full day glacial tour to see blue pools and rivers. Hiking on a glacier was definitely on my bucket list! ✅

My wife and I have been on two separate trips with KWG (so far). I don't know I how could give a better review for these people and what they do. I could gush over Katy and Tyler and Monte and Jared how incredibly wonderful they are for pages and pages. My experiences have been extremely meaningful. My trips have also been challenging and rewarding on many levels. KWG are beyond competent and knowledgeable while being some of the most unique folks around. Go the backcountry with them, or hop in a packraft and run some rivers and creeks---or both. You won't regret it and may just change your life along the way.

Highly recommend KWG. My family did a 6 day backcountry trip with them this July and it was incredible. KWG was amazing to work with during the trip planning stage. They put forth a lot of effort to understand what we were looking to accomplish with our trip and helped with logistics of getting to McCarthy. The trip itself was amazing and so was our guide. Would highly recommend KWG and hope to take another trip with them in the future!

We had an amazing experience with Marguerite as our ice climbing guide!! She took safety seriously and made the day so fun. She brought us to the glacier and allowed us to climb (despite having no experience), and encouraged us the whole way! We then got to dip into a glacier pool (polar plunge) which was such a fun way to end the day. She is a gem and the entire experience was a 10/10
Sophie L — Google review
We didn’t join a tour with them since we’re experienced glacier hikers and had our own crampons, but they still offered helpful tips and recommendations. They clearly know the area well and are very knowledgeable. For a t-shirt at their shop as a gift.
Marta S — Google review
We flew into the Wrangell/St. Elias backcountry with Ry from KWG and proceeded to embark on four days of challenging terrain and gorgeous scenery. It was breathtaking in every sense of the word and being miles away from civilization in the shadows of ancient glaciers was exactly what we wanted and got. We'd go again in a heartbeat!
Courtney M — Google review
Had an awesome day hiking to Root Glacier with KWG! We did a private hike to accommodate our 10 yr old son. Our guide, Zimmer, was great with him. They walked together and talked most of the hike. The last part of the trail down to the glacier was treacherous but we all moved slow and carefully. We did see others fall on that part of the trail. The glacier itself was awesome - he took us to see waterfalls and different ice features. Highly recommend!

They did such a fantastic job bringing the best of Alaska in full view. Loved the animal displays because most you didn't want a close encounter and at the same time would love to see. They shared great information and tips, including what to do on future trips. The facilities were immaculate, the staff helpful and outgoing. They definitely loved their jobs. In addition to the animal displays they had great artifacts about the cultures and the state's top sport: dog mushing. You definitely want to stop here and get all the inside info they can provide. Outside are some cute photo ops with cutouts that children of all ages can enjoy.

I’m glad I stopped and visited! Great exhibits on all things Alaska and the two ladies were very nice and friendly. They noticed I was looking at the T-shirts (couldn’t find my size) and they let me know they had more sizes in the back and got me the one I wanted. I would recommend anyone visiting Tok to stop as it’s really worth the time. I wish I’d taken more pictures.
Phillip W — Google review
Admittedly, I asked about a former roadhouse that had burned down many years ago in TOK. "I am not familiar with that," was her honest answer. During my later tour of the information center's exhibition, I saw the former roadhouse and the information about it - several times! At least your staff lacks training on what can be seen there - Oh yes, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays!

The Wrangell-St. Elias National Park Visitor Center, located in Copper Center on the Richardson Highway, serves as the main hub for park information and activities. Although it's not within the park boundaries, it offers a great opportunity to engage with knowledgeable rangers who can provide insights into wildlife viewing opportunities within the park. The center features informative displays, a theater, and clean facilities.
Great visitors center for introduction to the largest National park in the USA. Had excellent displays, theater, clean restrooms, and grounds. 2 different rangers gave talks one about the park overview and mountain peaks and glaciers. The other a talk about the boreal forest and fungi/mushrooms that can be seen there. Nice flat trails for easy walking to see the local plants and trees. Very quiet and beautiful views if you are lucky. We read every display, watched movie and did the trail. Can spend 3 hours there doing all that. Should bring your own food snacks and water. None for purchase. You can refill your water bottles there. Highly recommend.

We loved this National Park! There were lots of animal skins and things for the kids to touch and feel as well as for us adults. There was a movie in the theater which was very informative and inspiring. Beautiful views of the mountains with free binoculars at the viewing areas.
Susan M — Google review
We arrived after the park had closed but none of the gates had been locked. As soon as we got out of the truck one of the rangers told me he was going to be locking the gates shortly and if we intended on using the park we needed to park on the outside of the gate so that we didn't get locked in. We did what he directed and then set off on our hike. The park offered ip some beautiful view of the woods as well as the river along the trail. We walked the easy trail first and soon found it dead-end to a cliff where part of the pathway had been washed away. We saw a few different kinds of wildlife.

Beautiful visitors center with a great little walking trail. I love the posted foliage signs!
Vanessa B — Google review
Like most NP Visitor Centers this one is staffed with friendly, knowledgeable Park Rangers. There's also an exhibit building nearby, and another building shows a 20-minute informative film about the Park. That said, there's not much to this VC. You can see it all in an hour or two. The available hiking trails are short, with severely obstructed views of the Copper River Valley. I understand that there are other entrances to this NP with roads that go much further into the Park and have far better hiking trails. My advice would be to consider those.
Don D — Google review
The visitor center itself is nice, with flushing toilets and drinking fountains and a water bottle filling station and a few different buildings with information about the Native people in the area and about the geography of the park and stuff. But they close the gate at 5, which seems really early. There are a couple of short and easy hikes right near the visitor center, which is nice. If they didn't close the gate so early and open it kind of late (9 a.m.), I'd probably give it 5 stars.

The Worthington Glacier is melting fast! We saw this ten years apart standing close to the glacier at very different locations. This time there were lots of waterfalls crashing down. It is beautiful.
Misty S — Google review
A perfect stop on the way from Anchorage to Valdeze. The maintained trail is very short, so if you want a closer glimpse of the glacier, you need to be a bit adventurous and make your way over the rocks and rubble yourself. Make smart choices, and you can get right up to the glacier. The river runs right out of the glacier to the beautiful lake below. It is picturesque whether you hike to the glacier, or enjoy the view from the overlook.
Anne V — Google review
We just went out to Worthington Glacier the second week of September, didn't realize that you can't actually touch the glacier like a lot of reviews had said. Apparently those are not updated. The woman running the show out there, greets you and takes your $5 for parking, and her dog (I think his name was Tucker??) Were super friendly and very helpful with answering any questions about the geography , etc (including that you really haven't been able to touch the glacier in at least 5 years). It's a beautiful drive out through Thompson Pass though so would still recommend as a stop over.

The Solomon Gulch Hatchery in Valdez is the largest pink salmon hatchery in North America and a must-visit attraction. From July to October, visitors can witness the incredible sight of salmon returning to the hatchery through the fish ladder and along the walkway. This also provides an opportunity to spot wildlife such as bears, sea lions, and fishermen drawn by the salmon run. The outdoor visitor display and viewing point offer informative video screens and displays explaining the hatchery's processes.
Some people we met in Valdez told us about the fish hatchery so we had to go check it out. This was so interesting and such great information as you walk along the visitor walk. It was fun watching the sea lions getting the fish and a great learning experience on how the salmon return to where they were born. This was the first time I had been to a fish Hatchery. There is a nice waterfall right across from the parking area, which was an added bonus.
Donna S — Google review
Even though we got there in September the experience was like no other. Lots of salmon still spawning upstream and many many more on the rocks and shores that finished their life cycle. Tons of seagulls and a few sea lions fill the air with their vocal power. Incredible views and if you're skilled or lucky enough you might catch a salmon that is still lively.
Sean M — Google review
I could, and have, spend hours here!!!! At high tide (and a few hours on either side of it) you will see the sea lions gorging on the returning salmon. It’s really cool to watch!!! Bears are sometimes here too, tons of seagulls, some eagles, seals, and sea otters. This is all when the fish are running and food is plentiful.
Lynn V — Google review
This is a really cool place to come and see wildlife if you are ever in Valdez. I came here with my wife and her friends and had an amazing time. It was so fascinating watching the sea lions swim around and eat salmon.
Pablo G — Google review
At high tide, it's a beautiful sight. At low tide, it's a completely different story. At high tide, you see thousands of salmon swimming back to the river to lay their eggs. Sea lions eat the salmon, as they naturally intended. At low tide, you see that the sea lions don't eat the salmon at all, they only kill them, and then thousands upon thousands lie there. Dead. Sea lions kill salmon and just let them lie here on the beach. Seagulls pass by to peck out their eyes. They don't eat the salmon either. Nature can be vicious sometimes.
Stan E — Google review
The experience to watch the sea lions and the hatchery and the beautiful waterfalls was awesome. To have this open to public for families with kids to take a walk down the hatchery and watch the sea lions eat, fight, swim, play... Was an awesome experience.

The Valdez Museum is a heritage museum that delves into the history and culture of the area through art exhibits, photographs, and artifacts. One of its prominent exhibits is dedicated to the Exxon Valdez oil spill, showcasing its impact on the region. Established over a century ago by prospector Joseph Bourke, this museum features various other displays including a 1886 hand-pumped fire engine, prisms from a Fresnel lighthouse lens, and historical photographs.
By far this is the best small town museum I have seen anywhere! Good displays, information and movies about this little city’s very interesting and unique history! Worth the walk from docks. Particularly good was a display of hand built models of Native Alaskan watercraft. See pictures.

Nicely laid out with good signage. Tells the story of Valdez from early times thru USA settlement and key events: gold rush, transportation development, earthquake, Exxon Valdez spill & cleanup. Tells story of local people & exploration. We were there about 2 hours. Cost $8 each for seniors. Informative films on key events and air transport development. Neat old fire wagon.

An excellent museum talking about the early history of Alaska and Valdez including information about the Exxon Valdez environmental disaster. It was surprising to find such a well done museum in such an out of the way location, but Alaska has surprised me quite a bit. No need to buy tickets in advance but keep an eye on the hours and days it is open.

It originates from the Chugach Mountains and spans about 360 square miles with a length of 25 miles. Visitors can embark on day trips from Valdez to witness this natural wonder by boat or kayak.

An enormous Alaskan glacier that moves quickly but is also rapidly shortening in length The Columbia Glacier is one of Alaska’s largest glaciers, with an area of about 360 square miles (920 square km) and a length of 25 miles (40 km). It descends from the Chugach Mountains in southern Alaska to Prince William Sound (an inlet of the Gulf of Alaska), where it calves large numbers of icebergs into the sea. Shrinking record The Columbia Glacier is one of the fastest moving in North America, but its fast forward movement is offset by extremely rapid calving of icebergs at its terminus, at the rate of some 14 million tons (13 million tonnes) every day. As a result, since the 1960s, the glacier’s terminus has moved backward, and since 2011 it has become detached from some of its largest tributary glaciers. The retreat cannot be attributed solely to global warming, as other nearby glaciers are not shrinking at the same pace. Instead, experts believe it is connected to the shape of the bedrock channel under the glacier.
Andrey N — Google review

MICA Guides offers thrilling experiences such as ziplining on the Nitro and G 2, which are among the longest in Alaska. The G 2 is also the fastest in the state, providing an exhilarating ride near Matanuska River and Matanuska Glacier. Their knowledgeable guides prioritize safety during activities like hiking and ice climbing. Visitors have praised their guides for being patient, professional, and skilled at leading groups.
Alaska trip will always be memorable. We started our first excursion with the Matanuska glacier walk. This glacier is over 22,000 years old and we got an amazing experience walking over it with MICA guides. Bailey was our guide. What I loved was that they kept the tour groups small so it was just us 4 with Bailey. She took her time explaining the history behind everything. That’s what we wanted, someone who was not rushed. She explained to us the benefits of the glacial mud. We even brought some of that home 😊 She helped us figure out what's inside a really deep hole created by the flowing water over so many years. It was dangerous to go any closer as we could slip in so we tried recording it using our selfie stick 😂 (spoiler: the stick wasn’t long enough to solve the mystery) But this goes to say that there is a lot of story in every part of the glacier and even though it's fun, it can be dangerous, so go with someone who knows their stuff. We also got to walk between the tall cracks of the glacier. What I couldn’t show was how cold and tasty the fresh water was that we drank directly from the glacier ❄️ All in all a 10/10 experience. I would definitely recommend them.

Shout out to Quinn and Alaina for an amazing glacier trek! We had so much fun laughing and learning from them. Trekking the glacier and getting to do some climbs and rappels was one for the books. Samantha was accommodating when weather conditions changed our initial helicopter plan and honestly, I think we won with the advanced trek - it became about the journey and not just arriving at the destination. We 💯 recommend MICA!

My family and I did the glacier hike and had an incredible time. There was great information on how to prepare and the staff was wonderful. Our guide, Bailey, was so sweet, knowledgeable, funny, helpful, and personable. She even gave us great recommendations on where else to go in the area. We all had such a great time and the glacier itself was obviously so worth it.

The private ice fall trek was an amazing trip with such a great guide, Beryl. This is the only tour we can attend with the two little one, since most of the tour require at least a minimum of eight years old. The trip itself is very interesting and adventure for the children, and also well educate. Thank you MICA guides and Beryl for this amazing glacier trip for our family.
Tommy L — Google review
Our experience with MICA Guides at Matanuska Glacier was truly one of the highlights of our Alaska trip! From the moment we arrived, everything ran smoothly — check-in was quick and easy, setting the tone for what turned out to be an extraordinary adventure. We weren’t entirely sure what to expect going in, but the glacier hike exceeded all of our expectations. It was thrilling, adventurous, and absolutely breathtaking. The terrain was diverse and exciting, and we were fortunate to have perfect weather during our hike — it started raining right after we finished, so we really lucked out! We were placed in a small, private group which made the experience feel even more special. Everyone was active and fun, and our guide, Sam, was phenomenal. His energy was contagious, and he was clearly knowledgeable, incredibly well-trained, and absolutely passionate about what he does. Sam was not only entertaining and encouraging, but also made sure we stayed safe while pushing our limits in the best way possible. He guided us to incredible viewpoints, helped us climb unique ice formations, and made sure we didn’t miss a thing. He’s a true professional and clearly born for this kind of wilderness guiding. Reaching the top and taking in the vast, glacial views was nothing short of magical — it felt like we were on another planet. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that’s hard to put into words. If you're visiting Alaska, this glacier hike is an absolute must-do, even if it requires a long drive (which it did for us — and it was so worth it). Thank you, MICA Guides, and especially Sam, for an unforgettable day!

This hike was absolutely worth recommending! Our guide, Ryan, was extremely reliable and led us on a long and beautiful journey to see stunning glaciers. He even got us fresh glacier water to drink and shared fascinating explanations about the geology, landscape, and glacier features. Highly recommended!

We highly recommend ice climbing with MICA Guides! Dakota was our guide for our June 2025 private ice climbing tour and he was fantastic! Our younger son is 11 and Dakota was especially patient and encouraging with him. The adventure was definitely family friendly, and everyone at MICA was friendly and courteous. The scenery was breathtaking, we loved the trek out to the glacier and learning from our guide. We each got to do 4 climbs and Dakota tailored the outing for our individual skills. We had a phenomenal trip to Alaska, full of epic hikes and adventures, but when people ask us what our favorite part was, we all mention our day of ice climbing on Matanuska Glacier!

We had a fabulous time with our guide Sam. Our group of 6 (ages 11, 13, 17, 19, 42 and 43 years old) felt safe hiking around the glacier. Mica lends you raincoats if needed and boots with ice spikes to make the trek easy. Sam was great at taking photos and sharing details about the ice. Highly recommend MICA guides for a group looking for some nature adventures.

Did the 3 hour glacier hike with Angie and Chantae. It was a really great tour and value. The guides were extremely fun. The communication was great on safety and direction during the excursion. They both had a wealth of knowledge about glaciers and the environment around us. They were very helpful with suggestions for other sites , activities and dinning in the area. We took several of their suggestions! The office was also very helpful before the trip. Hope to do other tours with Nova in the future!

We can’t say enough about Nova Alaska Guides. Everyone we encountered was great and both of our adventures were amazing! Pretty sure our 14 year old has now found his calling to come join your crew as a guide in the summers when he gets to college 😎🧗🏞️ Day 1 with Nova: We had an amazing day with Drew & Thomas on the Backcountry Ice Climbing tour. They were so knowledgeable & appreciated their attention to safety. This was a very long & challenging day but was something we will remember forever and a highlight from our Alaska vacation. We also really appreciated how much this tour challenged us (2 adults & 14 year old) & we’re proud that we accomplished it! Thank you Nova, Thomas & Drew! Day 2 with Nova: Wow! This was by far the most thrilling & exhilarating experience of our entire vacation! Once again, Nova guides continued to impress us with their attention to safety on the Six Mile Canyon Whitewater rafting experience. They made sure we were safe & had a blast from the time we got onto the bus. Huge thank you to Jarvis, Bear, Newbie & the rest of the crew! This haiku is dedicated to all of you 😉😂 Thrills in Alaska Bear took us down a river Yay! We didn’t die!

We joined the glacier hike tour and it was absolutely incredible! The rope descent was an unexpected thrill that made the adventure even more exciting. The entire experience was unforgettable, with breathtaking views at every step. Huge thanks to our amazing guides, Maya and Drew — they’re simply the best!

Drew is definitely one of the most knowledgeable, fun, and safe tour guides we've had on our one month excursion in Alaska. Our family had a memorable family time trekking and climbing the Matanuska glacier. Drew and his team made sure that everyone had a great experience of ice climbing while ensuring everyone's maximum safety. Ice climbing is a gear specific sport and NOVA ice guides ensured that all climbers are fully equipped. I highly recommend NOVA for ice climbing.

So amazing! The guides (Sam and Chante) were friendly, knowledgeable and fabulous and the tour was definitely do-able. Easy for most of it, we had to be a little careful with our footing for some of it but the chains/spikes for the boots were great. Also the boots they gave were super comfortable and fit really well. In 55 degrees, I wore a fleece, sweatshirt and windbreaker and I was totally fine. Really cool experience!

Fantastic excursion! Our guide, Angie, was very knowledgeable and great with our kid. Angie was relaxed and fun as a tour guide, but alert to hazards and always kept safety a priority. Would love to book another excursion again with her and NOVA next time we are in Alaska.

My trip on the glacier was wonderful and that was due to Nate, our guide. I really appreciated the small ratio of 1 guide to 4 customers. I especially enjoyed the extra time on the 6 hour adventure trek. Nate knows the glacier well and his attention to safety and adventure was fantastic.

Portage Glacier, located in Portage Valley on the Kenai Peninsula in Southcentral Alaska, is a popular attraction just 55 miles southeast of Anchorage. Once stretching to where the Seward Highway now sits, this 10-story-tall glacier is a remnant of its former self and offers visitors a glimpse into the region's unique and wild landscape.
Hiked the postage pass trail today and it has to be one of my new favorites. We saw some swans in a lake near the top! Beautiful views that are SO worth the steep hike up!

Beautiful glacier! You can pull over on the highway to see it from afar, or take a boat tour for a closer view. Truly amazing. I just hope it remains for generations to come so others can experience these glaciers.
Shahbaz S — Google review
We bought a boat tour. It was reasonably priced and took us up to Portage Glacier. You can get tickets in advance or buy at Portage Glacier Cafe which is near by. It was lovely.

Great glacier cruise. Was a very active day for the glacier to be dropping chunks off. The crew was very nice and knowledgeable. Three restrooms on board and trash cans. Signs and photos from past and present crew. Would highly recommend the glacier cruise.
C B — Google review
We took the Portage Glacier tour and that of the wildlife refuge and enjoyed it immensely. The majesty of the glacier was both overwhelming and awe-inspiring in its scope, and the ability to see it in close proximity on the boat tour is not to be missed.

This is worth the walk! Was amazing to see with my family just after leaving Whittier

This stop was part of our Alaskan land/sea cruise and it was wonderful! Bundle up because it gets a little chilly! Otherwise the boat ride and tour guide were wonderful! The glacier was beautiful! I highly recommend doing this!
Kim N — Google review
We were lucky enough to visit it on a cloudy day. I think that was the best condition to capture the glacier's bluish color. We booked this tour in Anchorage and it included the Alaska wildlife conservation center and Alyeska resort. Both places are worth it, but the glacier is the gem. The whole day's experience was unforgettable. When the boat was not far from the glacier the huge chunk of ice calved into the water with a loud splash. That was a sad reminder of the glacier's progressing recession.

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, situated in Portage Valley, is a refuge for injured and orphaned animals. Spanning 200 acres, this non-profit organization is dedicated to wildlife conservation and care. Visitors can stroll, drive or bike through the 1.5-mile loop within the sanctuary to observe animals like bison, reindeer, wolves, and bears against the stunning backdrop of Chugach mountains and Turnagain Arm Inlet coastline.
My husband and I visited the conservation center as part of a Glacier and Wildlife tour. We had an absolute blast. The bears were our favorite and we got some wonderful pictures. I enjoyed seeing animals up close that are normally behind glass at a zoo. I love the conservation efforts for the wood bison as well. We got to see some very new baby bison while we were there. I highly recommend visiting if you're in Alaska.

I’ve always loved this place — not only as somewhere to bring out-of-town guests, but also for a fun day trip with my daughter and her friends. The mission behind the center is truly meaningful, and I really appreciate that the animals are kept in large, natural, and humane enclosures. The staff are always friendly, welcoming, and clearly care about the work they do. It’s a wonderful experience every time we visit!

I really want to give this place 5 stars but there were some issues that kept me from doing so. First they had hours posted. I arrived just at opening time and the gates were closed. Myself along with a few other vehicles waited at the gate for about 20 minutes. Finally a car came and told us they would not be opening until 12:30. So I left and came back. Upon coming back I was greeted by a friendly person at the toll booth. I paid my fare and entered. The first thing I noticed were a lot of the exhibits were vacant. Not sure if it was the time of year or if they had lost or removed some of the animals. I watched the crew feed bears and that was great and absolutely the highlight of the trip. In all I would say it took me about 40 minutes to see everything including the 15 minutes or so I spent watching the bear feeding. It was neat but don’t think I’d come back.
Jason K — Google review
The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is an absolute gem! Watching bears roam freely in their natural habitat was breathtaking, and seeing coyotes, caribou, and other native animals up close made the experience unforgettable. The center is beautifully maintained, educational, and truly dedicated to wildlife preservation. A must-visit for anyone exploring Alaska!
Subhankar D — Google review
Had higher expectations in terms of number of bears and moose we will get to see here but turned out to be not as great as we expected. We thought of the entrance fee as a donation for the care of the amazing animals they have. We did not see a bull moose which was our main goal. We did get see musk ox and lynx which were quite cool.
Chirag S — Google review
I did the Walk on the Wild Side tour as a birthday gift to myself, and it was amazing! Ivie was a great, knowledgeable guide who was able to help me spot well hidden animals. Knowing each animals story made the visist even better. Learning about their conservation efforts through the visist gave me more insight as well. AND I got to feed Twix the porcupine! I cannot recommend this center enough. I highly recommend a tour- it gives you so much more insight to how this center is helping not only their animals, but the Wood Bison population in Alaska.
Harlow B — Google review
Amazing place to see wildlife up close. Despite the rainy day, everything was very accessible by car, with a few spots where we hopped out for a closer look. Gift shop is really quite nice and had a wide variety of gifts for anyone to find something. Great experience! Will go back!
Emily H — Google review
Very nice visit, the park can be walked as well as driven. Though walking offers a much better chance to see the animals. We were very lucky and saw both black bears within two hours of our arrival. (The walking route when done fully and slower to watch for the animals takes about an hour and 45 minutes).

Alyeska Resort is a luxurious ski resort located in the municipality of Anchorage, Alaska. The resort features refined accommodations, an aerial tram, and chic mountaintop dining. It is also home to Alaska's first Nordic spa, offering a 50,000-square-foot adults-only facility with indoor and outdoor hydrotherapy circuits surrounded by the stunning Chugach mountains.
We started out with a communication issue that almost made us cancel but ultimately it was resolved correctly with the help of a Manager named Michael. We really liked the resort overall. The Black Diamond lounge rivaled the top lounges I have been in around the world and definitely is a leg above the majority of domestic hotel lounges. Spa was excellent. Rooms were very nice. The Bathrooms had clearly been updated but the rooms themselves could use a refresh. The beds however were some of the comfiest I have slept in. Very good rest. I would absolutely stay again if we are in Anchorage
Matthew T — Google review
Went to use the Nordic spa and Massage, some of it was under Constuction during my time, however, I know that they’re just getting that all ready for the ski season. The service in most of the in-house establishments felt like end of the summer season exhaustion for most of the servers. The meals at forte were very good. The rooms are standard on the seventh floor, but had one facing the mountain, which was nice.getting the local rate was a big plus as I may not have purchased what I received at full visitors price. All in all it was a nice experience!

Needs some serious updating and repairs. Everyone was kind and took great care of us. Parking wasn't great. And I didn't really appreciate seeing ni***r written in dust on the window, but not to worry, I cleaned it off for them. Prices are outrageous. One employee told us she's been there for 20 years and has been begging for a raise for YEARS and they just finally gave her a 25 cent raise... with their prices, surely they can do better than that. There's plenty to love about it, but I do have my complaints. It was a one and done for us. Nice to experience, but we won't be back. Not until the property reflects the pricing.
Devyn M — Google review
Booked for mid-October. To start, the service and food at the 2 open restaurants was great. The other side: There was no disclaimer when booking months out that everything was going to be closed, including the pool, hot tub, tram, and the majority of restaurants. For the high price paid, I would expect more out of a business model and making customers at least aware of all closures when booking. Also, some thermostats are “not working” according to the front desk, so the room stayed hot regardless of thermostat setting. Overall, just not what I would expect for $300+ per night.
Matthew W — Google review
What an exhilarating experience here at Alyeska resort. The stay here was amazing! The Mountain view from the room was breath taking. My only ding with this hotel was them not updating the website. My only reason for picking this resort was because of the amenities and they were closed due to the off season. I wish they had a microwave in the room because there restaurants close at 10pm and I had to drive out to Anchorage for food after getting off a late flight day one. The reindeer sausage was the best thing on the breakfast menu at Forte but I fell like the food at the place was not quite fresh and everything tasted rushed even though it was off season. I will certainly be coming back the next time when it’s in season so I can participate more of the snow activities.

The Alyeska Resort is very nice. It has a luxury feel (with luxury amenities) without feeling pretentious. Great bars and restaurants. Room was high-end and attractive. Lots of people and groups during our summer stay, but they do a good job of moving everyone around efficiently, so it does not feel crowded. Great place.

Nice hotel as part of Holland America land portion of cruise. Understand it's a great ski resort for other half of the year. Good hiking available right outside the door or take the ski gondola to the top. Large bull moose in the pond when we were there. Free shuttle service around town was really convenient.

This property is the nicest and most popular resort in the state of Alaska. We stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms and the accommodations are fantastic. We did notice some areas of the hotel are under construction, and while none of this distracted from the visit, we can tell that the updates are going to turn out great. I'd definitely stay here again. You can't beat the access you get to the mountain and all the restaurants & shops within. The experience is great!

In the summer, Girdwood hosts the popular Blueberry Festival in August, offering berry-picking, local food and drinks, as well as hiking and dancing in the peaceful resort town. Located in Girdwood at the base of Mt.
Arrived early and wasn't busy on a Saturday in July. Parking is down the street ~5 minutes walk. Ride in the tram was smooth. Restaurant and museum on the top of the mountain. There is the option to hike down or up, if you want to avoid the $45 ticket. Hike is 2.3 miles and steep in places, but oh so beautiful!

Hiked up and got a free ride down. The 2000 foot elevation gain is no joke. Took me 2 hours to go 2 miles but so glad I did it. Awesome views, picked salmon berries for the first time, lunch was delicious and the ride down in the tram delightful. We even saw a wedding party going to the top. Would have preferred no rain but didn’t let that stop us. Bucket list checked✔️

The Alyeska Aerial Tram is a fantastic experience. The views on the way up and at the top are unbelievable! It was $78 for 2 as hotel guests. We rode the tram up and hiked the way back down. We couldn't recommend this experience highly enough. It was well worth the price of admission.

Beautiful scenery. Breathtaking views. Not a lot of people for as busy as it was. Lots of trails to hike. Lots of food options. Awesome little gift shop. Definitely do the done and ride option as you get more money to spend at the food places.

While this was an awesome experience and the Roundhouse museum was neat I'm not sure we got our money's worth with the tram. I would ABSOLUTELY recommend the tram for small children or family members with limited mobility. It's about a 4-5 minute ride up it's not shaky or wobbly except at one spot and the staff warn you. The views are amazing! But I got some pretty amazing views at state parks for $5, too.

Guests appreciate the friendly staff, well-maintained animals, and picturesque location. It's a perfect destination for families or solo travelers looking to connect with nature and wildlife in Alaska.
2 adults and we had some free time and this place sounded interesting. We really couldn’t tell if it was aimed at children or adults but took a chance anyway. We had a great time. We got to see a variety of animals and the staff was very helpful. Feeding the reindeer, buffalo, alpaca and moose were loads of fun. There is a section with kid activities we avoided but even their petting zoo area was adult worthy.

We had a ton of fun at the Reindeer Farm! The kids loved petting the baby reindeer, bunnies, and alpacas. Feeding the moose and bison was also a huge highlight. The staff is very knowledgeable and kind. I would highly recommend visiting this farm if you have time near Palmer.

Fun place to take the whole family. Not overly priced for entry. Lots to see. Places for kids to play after walking around for a couple of hours. There is even a reptile exhibit. Animals range from moose, elk, musk ox, etc. A lot of furry four legged animals to see here. There are even caribou antlers for sale! Kids can feed the reindeer and enjoy some hotdogs! Nice coffee shop inside the barn. Totally recommend this as a trip for the family, especially when visitors from out of state come to visit. All of the staff is super friendly.

The Musk Ox Farm is a delightful non-profit destination that offers educational tours centered around the fascinating musk oxen. Visitors can enjoy guided walks led by knowledgeable staff who share intriguing stories and facts about these remarkable animals, which have survived since the Ice Age. The experience is both fun and informative, making it an excellent way to spend an hour or so. While the tour may not be ideal for very young children, it's perfect for those looking to learn more about wildlife in a unique setting.
We have been to here several times. The tours are 45 to 60 minutes long depending on the weather and the musk oxen. The tour staff have always been delightful and interesting. We recommend, especially in early summer with good weather.

Jessica was a great tour guide. They clearly love their animals and make efforts to keep the herd happy and healthy. We found this place on accident while on vacation and I'm so happy that we stopped and did the 45 minute tour. Worth the cost of the tickets!

Probably the only place you'll see Musk Ox up close! Faculty and staff were very nice and attentive. Their modern facility does a great job at showcasing these interesting, Arctic animals. I liked the tour, however I wish we could've seen more of the farm. We stood and talked in the same few places longer than I would've liked.

My partner and I were going back and forth between deciding to visit the zoo, wildlife preserve or the Muskox farm. Clearly we decided on the farm and we couldn’t have been happier. We chose the farm because we wanted a personal group experience with a knowledgeable guide. Our guide was Jessica and she was fun, knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our groups questions. We learned so much and it was really cool to be a safe distance to a muskox. We definitely enjoyed the hour long tour and would recommend!

Nestled within the Chugach State Park, Eagle River Nature Center is a haven for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Originally established by volunteers in the original Visitors Center, this center offers educational outdoor recreational opportunities and promotes environmental conservation. The picturesque mountain setting is home to a network of hiking trails that lead through stunning landscapes. Just a short drive from Anchorage, visitors can enjoy wildlife viewing and educational programs about the local flora and fauna.
What a fantastic place to find on vacation! We were just looking for a scenic lookout to see the mountains and the road ended into the nature center so we decided to have a look around. The staff inside the center were all super-friendly and took the time to listen to our stories and tell their own and recommended a trail based on what we told them. A quarter mile up the trail from the nature center we came to an overlook looking over the river/marsh and there was a huge bull moose in the water munching away on whatever it could dredge up from the water. The scenery is beautiful (even without the moose). Picturesque mountains, a beaver dam, and lush forests made our hike incredible. Everything was impeccably maintained; the nature center, both boardwalks we encountered, and the trails were all perfect. And then, to top it off, our son accidentally left his favorite sweatshirt behind on one of the boardwalks when we continued our hike. We left and didn't notice it was gone. We came back 4 hours later hoping someone turned it in at the nature center. No one had so I took a quick re-hike to retrace our steps. The sweatshirt was exactly where he had left it; no one had touched it the whole time we were gone. Super-cool place and great views. Would hike again!

What an absolutely beautiful little Nature Center. Enjoy the manicure Trail. At the time of our visit the longer path was closed due to bear activity and the Salmon Run. The Beaver Pond The Overlook. The interesting Visitor Center made for a great visit. They have a few different hiking trails you can walk. The trails and very well marked making planing your hike a breeze. We really enjoyed our visit to the Eagle River Nature Center

This place is a great destination for outdoor lovers, wildlife viewers, adventure seekers, hikers, campers, or even dog mushers. Small fee to park or you can buy the annual pass. Small animal exhibit inside with some souvenirs and snacks. Take the trails that lead you into the nature center but bring bear bells, bear spray, and a 10mm or higher. During the salmon runs you can run into brown bears. Be sure to check the recent bear activity signs before heading in. They update the signs for trail closures as well. The staff love their jobs and are very friendly. There are tons of programs for kids and lots of events here. Don’t miss out!

Eagle River Nature Center was a fun hike. We wanted to do Albert Loop and Rodak Trail but these were closed because of the Salmon and Bear. The one trail open was Iditarod which led down to Rapids Campsite and a peek at the water. At this point there is a small hidden path up to a bench and lookout with 360 degree view.

The Eagle River Nature Center is an amazing spot to visit outside Anchorage. It was our first proper stop on a long road trip across the state and what an incredible introduction to the beauty of Alaska! We arrived shortly before opening but the trails are still accessible and especially quiet at the time in the morning. As we were leaving, we received some very helpful advice from the couple at the welcome desk (including some further hiking suggestions). Highly recommended as a place to go exploring in the outdoors!

Amazing stop. Great history behind this place. Has great views of the hatchers pass and the valley. We'll maintained property and lots of historical artifacts. They had different mining equipments on display and lot of placards to explain how the whole process looked like. We loved the main house and the old pics for comparison showed how it has changed over years. Lots of parking available and Restrooms were in great condition too. There's a gift shop too.

Very cool place if you like historic things, geology or even just nature. Everything looks like it was just left and abandoned except for the visitor center and a few displays. I went on a Tuesday so it wasn't very crowded. Also, there are many trails at the site and around the area. The main path around the majority of buildings is paved and easy to walk.

Independence Mine State Historical Park is such a fascinating place to visit. The old gold mining camp gives you a glimpse into Alaska’s past, with historic buildings and breathtaking mountain views all around. Last night, we drove up near the park to an open area and watched the northern lights. It was absolutely magical—the quiet of the mountains, the cool night air, and the auroras dancing across the sky made the whole experience unforgettable.

Great experience here in Hatchers Pass! They’ve many wonderful trails to explore and a lot of information to learn about the history of the area. We were really impressed! We hiked about 2 miles is all, but got in a decent workout thanks to the ascent. The lake was a beautiful end to our exploring - and still had ice on it in some spots! No bears spotted - but someone had earlier that week. $5 parking and plenty of it.

First of all Alaska state parks are amazing at $5 daily day pass in 2025. This site is incredible. So many different trails for different ability levels. My husband and son did a super challenging loop up to a lake. My mother in law and I walked maintained paths around the mine site. There were tons of families with strollers and every age child imaginable. Next the tour in bunk house 2 run by Salmon Berry is so worth it($15/adult but ask for different discounts kids, military, veteran, senior citizens) You get access into locked buildings. The site just received grants for renovations so some buildings are still closed. The tour is roughly an hour every hour.

Took my doggos for doggos adventure day. It was a Tuesday so not too many people. We had a good walk and wore them out. The trail is well worn and followable. A few slippery spots, but with good tread on your shoes, you should be fine. The view is always gorgeous, we just happened to pick a perfect day for it!

We had the BEST time here! My husband had really wanted to see an old mine town on our trip and the Independence Mine had it all. They have a mine shaft you can view the entrance of and you are able to walk around the whole town. They have done a great job with putting information out of each of the buildings and areas around the site so you can learn more about what everything was used for and how the operation worked as well as the people who lived and worked there. When we were there, 2 buildings were open. The mine manager’s house and bunk house 2. Both of these had exhibits inside. We also went when there was still a bunch of snow at the top. We didn’t know this would be the case, but luckily we had our water proof hiking boots with us so we were still able to explore pretty comfortably. Don’t be like us though, check the weather before heading up the mountain. There might be snow even if it’s June! There are 2 public restrooms available in the parking area. They are your standard park restrooms and there is no sink, so bring your hand sanitizer. There is $5 parking fee. I’m not sure what the gift shop hours are but they do have snacks and drinks (like hot coco) incase you’d like something while you’re up there.

Had a great time here. Did the hike up to the icy lake. Was a bit of a challenge but definitely worth it for the experience and views.

Thunderbird Falls Trail is a family-friendly, easy hike located near Old Glenn Highway, just 30 minutes away from Anchorage. The trail leads to the 200-foot Thunderbird Falls and offers beautiful views of the surrounding scenery. It's well-maintained and suitable for all skill levels, making it perfect for families with small children. Additionally, visitors can explore the creek trail beyond the waterfall viewpoint for an extended adventure.
Super cool natural area with a solid and well-groomed trail! We went in early October before sunset, and it was great!

Well-maintained trail leading to a gorgeous waterfall. It isn’t a hard trail, but there are several steep up-and-downs. We saw a couple with children in a wagon and they didn’t seem to love the choice they made! 1/2 mile to gorge overlook, 1 mile to the waterfall. Took us 38 minutes to get out and back. Parking was plentiful, even for our 24’ RV.

Nice easy walk, wide trail. The first incline is steep but not hard. Beautiful water fall. Has an outhouse and nice parking lot- $5 parking fee

The walking at Thunderbird Falls Trail is very peaceful. Nice flat trail with almost no obstructions like roots and rocks, but it does have a couple steep incline sections that can leave you searching for your breath if you go to fast. Near the end of the mail trail is an offshoot that has a little more hazard to it, but I didn’t find it bad, nut your experience may vary. The offshoot has several obstructions but I think it’s worth it because you can get up close to the falls. If you go on a sunny day, the views are kind of spectacular at points along the way. It only takes an hour to make the hike, but you might want to stop and enjoy the views, so plan on additional time for pictures and sightseeing.

It’s a short hike that is not too difficult, making it great for the family. The falls are pretty, but are a bit underwhelming compared to some others in the area. The trail is well maintained and not too far outside Anchorage. Definitely worth the trip if you’re a nature lover or just looking for something to do that doesn’t consume your whole day.

Family friendly easy hike with beautiful views. Would suggest taking the creek trail after the waterfall viewpoint.

We like hiking this trail. It is an easy short trail. It is beautiful in summer and when frozen in winter.

The Iditarod Trail Headquarters, located in a log cabin, is a museum dedicated to the famous dog sled race known as The Iditarod. Since 1973, elite teams have raced on a 1,100-mile route from Anchorage to Nome every March. The museum features trophies, photos, and videos of dog sledding along with exhibits showcasing the race's history.
Very cool! Great museum with trophies and stories of the race over the years. The ride with Riley Dyche and the dogs was the highlight for sure… Amazing how much power he was getting out of eight frisky dogs! 😁

This was a great stop. They have a wonderful museum and you can see some of the trophies. There is also a movie that you can see. The dogs were not available since the weather was really rainy. They also have a nice gift shop.

We stopped by today for the summer sled dog cart rides with Riley Dyche. The dogs were so sweet and it was a lot of fun watching them run. They got really excited when they saw the cart come out. This is a great activity if you’re in the area looking for something to do. There weren’t many people when we went so we didn’t have to wait long at all. We went into the gift shop and visitor’s center after the cart ride and had fun looking around. They even have a 30 minute video option if you have time to sit down and learn all about the Iditarod.

We were very excited to go there. We saw the dogs leave pulling a cart with a couple in it. They came back in less than 5 minutes. Short ride. In the mean time we asked if we could pet the dogs and the wander was: "If you're not going to get a ride you can't pet them" Fair bit rude and money driven. We headed to the sort of museum, and yeah you can find some artefacts. They play a 30 minute movie which you can buy in CD format. It is mainly a shop with souvenirs with a small room with seats for the video.

Its a lovely place to interact with the huskies. The merch store is also great and the museum is great to get an understanding of the history. You can get a husky drawn sledge ride ( even in summer ).

We went in June, and we got to go on a short ride with the dogs, mashed by Riley. We watched a video and were lucky to be there on the day they were signing up mushers for next year's race and met the reigning champion. The gift shop was great and we got a book with great information regarding the Iditarod.

We learned about the Iditarod on our Princess cruise from Ryan Redington, the grandson of Joe Redington, and got to see two of his newest puppies. Very cool little museum showcasing the history of the race. The kids loved doing the ride on the dog sled and meeting all the dogs.

Nice free museum and gift shop. $10 dog sled rides are offered to support the dog team. Lots to see to learn the history of the Iditarod
