Cool old school wooden pier with food, a bar, and an arcade inside. Great views up and down the beach. This visit only thing biting seemed to be skates, but everyone fishing seemed to be enjoying themselves.

Absolutely love the atmosphere here. The bartenders are super nice, the drinks are cold, the snacks are good and the view can't be beat. Also pup friendly, they even give doggos biscuits.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

The Wright Brothers National Memorial is a prominent and historic landmark in the Outer Banks, featuring a 60-foot tall monument that has been open to the public since 1932. Visitors can explore exhibits and stand at the take-off spot of the first successful airplane flight. The memorial offers a glimpse into the lives of the Wright brothers through reconstructed camp buildings and a walk along the flight line.
What a fantastic experience!! This is a great place for all ages. Due to the historical significance, I definitely recommend visiting at least once in your life. It was fun learning even more about the Wright Brothers and their first flights than I knew before. It was a deeply moving experience with the commemorative memorials. The visitor center/museum was a beautiful 'Mission 66' 1960s themed building. I love the classic look and engineered design!
Emily T — Google review
This is a really nice area! If you have younger kids this might be a little boring for them. As someone who has always enjoyed aviation I thought it was awesome. You have to take time to get through the museum before going outside to understand what everything is. There is a nice gift shop here as well.
JorGen R — Google review
A must see attraction when in the area! Great for children! There's definitely a lot of walking and some climbing but you can still enjoy the memorial without the walking and climbing! The visitor's center has lots of information and things to see! The ranger program was fun and informative!
N W — Google review
If you are into history and Aviation you will love this place. Adonis the guide that gave the presentation was amazing! He should be on stage in NYC or CLE! Standing and walking the flight line that the Wright Brothers used was a touching feeling. And the climb to the top of the National Memorial was exhilarating! Don't forget to get you passport stamped!
Max C — Google review
Awesome experience, fun and historical to see the monument, sculpture and barn. Due to the Government Shutdown the museum, tour and general parking is all closed off but you can still walk around the property and see the monument and stuff. I walked around while listening to a podcast and felt like I was getting pretty much the whole experience. Use the First Flight airport parking lot and walk in. The airport has no gate.
Jonathan L — Google review
It was a nice experience to see where the wright brothers experimented with flight and to see the flight landing markers. They made it farther than I thought they made it for the first few flights. Theres a recreation statue of the flight and the other people that were present for it. The uphill walk up to the wright brothers monument was worth it. Plus the walk back down was soooo much easier than going up. One of the signs says the wright brothers carried each piece up the hill manually. Even after each flight.
Joseph F — Google review
Awesome memorial to the Wright Brothers and the first flight. Great little gift shop with good quality clothing made in U.S. you can bring your dog along for the walk up the sand dune to the outside memorial, too! Good clean facilities
C M — Google review
Your vehicle can get in with your NPS pass or pay $10 pp. This place is very cool, so much history behind the 1st flight. It’s like walking on hallow ground - the hill where they tested the plane without engine, the field where they made the 4 successful flights. Instead of walking from the visitor center to the hill, you can drive & park at the base of the hill. It’s a long walk. There’s an outdoor area with the bronze statues too. Must visit place when in the OBX area.

Jockey's Ridge State Park

Mentioned on

State park
Nature & Parks
Jockey's Ridge State Park, located in the Outer Banks, is home to the East Coast's tallest dune. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hang gliding, hiking, and sand surfing. The park offers stunning views of the ocean and sound from the top of the 100-foot tall dune. It is a popular spot for kite flying and sand sledding, with Kitty Hawk Kites providing hang gliding lessons on-site.
This is a beautiful state park!! You can get 'lost' from the rest of the world and have a lot of fun. It is very windy, which makes for great kite flying or hang gliding. They offer hang gliding lessons here. There is a kite store across the street to purchase kites!! There is a recently uncovered sand castle from a mini golf place from the 1970s. That was pretty cool to see. In the early, quiet mornings, you may see some wildlife or animal tracks in the sand, including foxes, coyotes, and opossums. I fly kites frequently, but have never visited a spot as great to fly as here!Additionally, this place is great to watch the sunset from
Emily T — Google review
Pleasantly surprised by this location! Went on a cloudy day so it wasn’t hot, super windy and VERY cool. Like walking on the moon! The views are incredible, so much space, and not a too far walk. Loved it! The visitor center is also super nice and informative and they had free stickers :) AND DOG FRIENDLY
Jessica C — Google review
This is a really cool place. I have a few tips after being here. Bring some kinda shoes that are throw aways. Crocs and sandals are useless in sand. The sand is not smooth like the beach it’s more gritty and sharp in places. Absolutely beautiful views from on top. We flew kites from on top and what a blast it was. Definitely can see why the Wright Brothers got flight near by. It’s a lot of walking here and it’s on soft sand so it really slows you down.
JorGen R — Google review
The tallest sand dunes in Eastern US are a beautiful sight to see. Been coming to Jockey's Ridge since I've been grade school and it nice to see that this site is being well maintained. These dunes are not an easy feat but well worth the uphill climb. Definitely a place to visit for nature lovers, very serene. Great free adventure for solo, couple, or family trips!
Esha — Google review
I am working my way through the 42 state parks in Nc and we went to Jockeys Ridge yesterday and the evening before. The best time to go is about 30 minutes before the sun sets. It has amazing views with a 360 degree view of Nags Head. The trail is all sand so as recommended I walked barefoot. It says it takes about 30 mins to 1 hour to get to the very top…I think it took us about 25. We went back yesterday morning to find out how to find the buried castle. We parked at the kite shop and crossed the crosswalk and the castle (which is no longer buried) was just a few yards from the road. Pretty neat and worth the stop!
Barbara B — Google review
This is a really fun and unique thing to do in the area. Theres a board walk through trees from the visitor center to the dunes. It isn’t a far walk up the dunes. It’s beautiful to see the ocean on one side and the sound on the other at the top of the dunes. It’s quite windy at the top, I saw many kites. I went in October and it was a perfect temperature and I was able to walk barefoot on the dunes.
Caitlin K — Google review
Such a massive sand dune! The climb to the top wasn't bad. If you're able to do it, I would definitely try! There is an observation deck, where you can see part of the dune. This is a great option for those with mobility issues. I also would not be bringing a stroller. We brought a boogie board and a saucer sled to try and sled down but we didn't have any luck with those.
N W — Google review
Looking to climb dunes. Taking 3 steps for every 1 step gained. Then thus will be the place for you. Once you reach the top you can enjoy the view, fly a kite, or watch others enjoy the area. Sand can be hot depending on the season so morning/evening is best in the summer.

Jennette's Pier

Mentioned on
44 lists
Fishing pier
Sights & Landmarks
Jennette's Pier, located in the Outer Banks, has a rich history dating back to 1939. After being damaged by storms, it was rebuilt and reopened in 2011 as an eco-friendly concrete pier that is part of the North Carolina Aquarium system. Visitors can rent fishing equipment and take lessons while enjoying the scenic views. The pier also features saltwater aquariums showcasing marine life found in the area.
It looks like a great place to fish, and there are a lot of people that fish here. It is also nice to just go out on the pier to sight see, and to watch people catch fish, but also be warned about the sheer number of sharp hooks flying through the air and the number of fish heads being sliced off. It costs money even to sight see, but it is only a few dollars. The entrance is pretty grand, and there is a fish tank, informational exhibits, and a gift shop. I also appreciate that they have a restroom, and that was free, although I'd gladly have paid an entrance fee at the time. It is right next to a public beach, and along the multiuse trail. We biked in about 4 miles through Nags Head.
Richard N — Google review
We visited just for some views on our last full day of vacation. It was 2 dollars per person just to sight see, which is good obviously. It was very nice! Beautiful and calm, even lined with fishermen and birds 🤣
Lilli M — Google review
Great Experience! Except for getting wet out at end of the pier from waves hitting the pier. Very good views! Read about the piers history. There is a small aquarium and retail shop. Had a good time. Cost to explore pier $2 per person.
Philip B — Google review
One of the best pier and I would definitely visit again. Restrooms and outdoor shower areas, even fishing pier has accessible restrooms and nearby restaurants. On a sunny day we were able to sit under pier as well which was great. Pier parking right near to beach and if its full, parking available nearby location as well.
Danda N — Google review
Nice pier. Was popular for fishing. Nice walk to the end. Saw a guy catch a huge fish which drew quite a crowd. Cost $2 to walk on. More to fish. Aquarium was small but a nice touch. Shop was good also. The beach either side was exceptional.
Ollie D — Google review
What a fascinating store. This might be my favorite store I’ve ever been too. It is definitely the best store in the Outer Banks. They make things out of recycled materials like driftwood and sea glass. I will definitely be coming back here next year. Also there is something for everyone’s budget starting with a $5 sea glass hair clip. Make sure you check out the outside area also.
Tara F — Google review
Labor Day, took the 1hr 45 minute road trip from Norfolk VA to OBX Jeannette’s Pier, unplanned…well worth the trip. Adult son loves to fish and excited about a new location, enjoyed casting into the deep ocean off the pier. Mom and I hung out on the beach: NO crowds, CLEAN and peaceful. Enjoyed the mini-aquarium and gift shop.

If you're planning a trip to the Outer Banks, make sure to catch 'The Lost Colony,' an extraordinary outdoor theater experience on Roanoke Island. This annual summer musical is a grand spectacle that rivals productions you might find at larger venues like Busch Gardens. The show features talented actors performing against a stunning natural backdrop of trees and wood, with impressive lighting effects that enhance each scene.
This is such a great story and great show. I will tell you the back stage pass is worth it. You learn more about. The show and you get to see things that others wish to be able to. Now the special effects are stunning and I will say there is not a bad seat in the house . The further up you are the more effects you can see and it is stunning. The show happens all around you not just on stage. There is snacks and beverages for everyone, the bathroom ma are clean and the cast are amazing talented members. Go enjoy the show !
Steve H — Google review
Getting tickets at the box office was easier for us than getting them online because two of us are handicapped. We were able to get a ride from the parking lot area to the seating area, which was a big help. The play itself was wonderful. The lighting effects were spectacular. The use of puppetry for some of the storytelling was wonderful. The animals being portrayed and the choreography of their movements was very well done.
Rebecca ( — Google review
I highly recommend getting tickets to see The Lost Colony live on stage. Great for all ages. Keeps your attention. Has an intermission. Very clean place, staff was professional, and a great experience for our family. Bravo to the cast and crew.
Nancy ꧂ — Google review
Absolutely wonderful experience!! The actors and set were top notch, and the lighting effects they use are awesome. I also appreciate the incorporation of the importance of the Native history there.
Melissa B — Google review
Incredible venue and production 88 years old for good reason. The story is compelling, the costumes are amazing and the cast is captivating. This is a family friendly environment much more comfortable than I expected, given the location and timing of our visit. If you are on or near the North Carolina Outer Banks, you owe it to yourself to check out the production.
Kevin K — Google review
For me this was the highlight of our trip to the Outer Banks. The intrigue of the lost colony is still alive today and these guys certainly did a good job showing what they know happened back then.
Robert H — Google review
I absolutely loved watching this play. It was a very professional type of play. The actors in it were absolutely amazing. The singing and dancing was very good and entertaining. I would definitely recommend if you’re in OBX
Brooke W — Google review
I went there with my husband. They helped us chose a good spot and cheapest. They have restrooms, store that sells snacks, drinks and alcohol. The seatings were nice. The shows actually started around 8:30. I believe it's because they need the sky to be dark first for projecting video onto their stage and it was amazing! The scene of when they were sailing in the ocean will be stuck in my head for a very long time. The sound system was great. The casts were really doing a good job immerge us into the story. I didn't prepare for their singing and was surprised, good surprised. I wish more people would come to see the show.

Nestled near Fort Raleigh, the Elizabethan Gardens is a captivating historical site that invites visitors to explore its lush landscapes and rich heritage. This enchanting destination features meticulously maintained paths adorned with an array of seasonal blooms, including camellias, crepe myrtles, and hydrangeas. Each visit offers a unique experience as the gardens transform throughout the year.
Amazing established gardens with 60 plus years of work! This place is tranquil and shaded for a reprieve on a hot, sunny day. Well worth the admission and also loaded with history of the flora and fauna as well as the people and events that shaped the gardens. There is a very nice waterfront overlooking the Sound. Also the greenhouse and nursery sells many plants to the public if you are interested. The staff has all the answers if you have questions about anything related to the gardens or history of the place. A must see for visitors and locals alike!
Sam M — Google review
I would have rated my visit at 5 stars, but sadly I was there at the beginning of April when most things were not in bloom. The facility has some lovely grounds with loads of different trees, flowers, and plant species. The flowers that were in bloom were lovely and all the grounds were clean and tidy. I did enjoy the fact that they piped classical music around the grounds, giving a very upscale vibe.
John H — Google review
Very beautiful experience. I was expecting more flowers per say rather than scrubs bushes trees or herbs but i did go in September so I cant complain. I dont know too much about plants in general besides that I cant keep them alive so I found it cool that a lot of things were labeled, some staff were out answering questions, and the map was helpful. It was amazing to see how big the garden was. I could have done without all the orb weaver spiders but luckily we survived. Even though I cam during an off season I still think it was a nice experience because I have never been anywhere like this before.
Kalia P — Google review
Pretty cool place! We went for plants and flowers and the garden is gorgeous, very diverse as well. We also saw a lot of really cool spiders and insects which for me was even better. I also liked the small area where they were growing plants and had them for sale!
Paul T — Google review
Such a beautiful garden and was worth the stop before we left town to visit! To just soak in all the beauty that this garden holds including the butterflies freely roaming! It makes you feel like it’s something out of a fantasy movie! Originally from Ohio but was on vacation to the Outer Banks and we drove past this and said “screw it let’s take a look” and it was well worth the side quest! 10/10 beautiful garden and will be visiting again🌹🌸💐🌺🌷🌻
Umar K — Google review
Great place to spend some time roaming around. Mature trees will keep you cool in the summer heat as you wander along the various pathways to the different garden areas. Many statues enhance the beauty of the gardens. We were there the end of October and they were lining some of the pathways for an evening childrens event. The Freedom Trail also begins across the parking lot from the garden entrance and is worth walking.
Cheryl T — Google review
I absolutely loved my walk through these fabulous gardens. Well designed (of course), well maintained and a joy to adventure through or just saunter and breathe. And a nice diversion from the beach - salt life. And I loved all the fountains & the faint fairy music playing along the trail.
Lyl R — Google review
Our family trip to this beautiful garden was not expecting such an exciting adventure! The fairy hunt employed all the help from our group. I love that the scavenger hunt for the fairies was not too obvious but also not too difficult. This experience works well for families with members unable to travel for long periods of time. The Big Lawn in the center allows you to view quite a bit without moving too far. While allowing members on the journey to immerse themselves in the aesthetic aspects of the garden.

Nature & Parks
The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island is a popular attraction for visitors of all ages, offering live animal encounters, feedings, and a 285,000-gallon shark tank. The sprawling complex showcases hundreds of tanks featuring local species such as alligators, river otters, horseshoe crabs, manta rays, and sea turtles. It also features ever-changing exhibits on marine biology, local hurricanes, and lifesaving station history.
We loved the aquarium! The exhibits obviously have all kinds of interesting and beautiful marine creatures, the outdoor wetlands area with the alligators and otters was really cool and experiential and the interactive parts of the exhibits were so great for kids. The diver in the shark tank was really fun and gave knuckles to all the kids standing there watching. The kids got to touch stingrays and pencil urchins, got to pretend to diagnose, treat and release an injured turtle in a really well done exhibit room and hunt for sharks teeth outside. And the kids were thrilled they got to keep the teeth they found! Nice gift shop too with lots of kid and adult gifts. We stayed for three hours and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Super cute Aquarium! I love Aquariums, my husband and I were married in one so of course we needed to come here. The Aquarium is on the smaller side and we went during off season so I could imagine during peak season would be pretty crazy, but regardless there is a good bit to see and do along with some really amazing creatures. Staff were great in general, very nice, willing to answer questions and super helpful. I would definitely stop back by if I was in the area! The Aquarium shop was also super cool, they have a good bit of really cute souvenirs
Kalia — Google review
The aquarium is a great way to learn more about local sea life, Outer Banks history, and the care and rehabilitation of injured marine animals. You can go through the turtle hospital, visit a touch pool, and there are many displays that appeal to visitors of all ages. Volunteers are welcoming, patient, and very knowledgeable. We learned so much! Advance tickets were required and entrance is timed, but it is easy to purchase tickets online and select a time that works for your schedule. There is a gift shop where you can purchase a memento of your visit, which goes to support conservation efforts. We had such a wonderful time!
Tra W — Google review
Stopped by here while on vacation. The family absolutely loved it. Seeing the smiles on my daughter and wife made it all worth it. Plus it's only $15 for adults. They have a great facility and even help rehabilitate sea turtles. If you're in the Outer Banks area. Put this on your list! They even have a pollinator garden & forest!
Dustin B — Google review
This place is so cool! They rehabilitate sea turtles and you can see what they do! They have a shark tank and tell you all kinds of interesting things while they are feeding them. There is a place outside kids and people in general, can dig for shark teeth and fossils, plus a lot of other stuff to see. We had a great time!

Very nice Aquarium. Several interactive displays for kids an adults alike the big shark tank is awesome. I recommend getting your tickets ahead of time if you know you're going to avoid waiting in line at the ticket window great way to make memories with your family.

Excellent aquarium!! Have lots of variety of animals. Love their otter and also seeing a white alligator. So majestic. Had large snapping turtle and other turtles. Variety of fish. Me and my kids had a blast and would go again. Prices were good. Not expensive. We have been to the one at pine knolls and fort fisher. But I believe this one was a lot better. We can’t wait to go back.

Charming small aquarium to visit for 1-2 hrs. They rescue sea turtles & release them back to the ocean, very cool. Check the calendar for the shows. Must visit when you’re in the area. You can purchase tickets ahead of time or at the windows like we did on a weekday

Bodie Island Lighthouse, a historic 1848 structure, offers tours and stunning views of the Outer Banks. Visitors can purchase tickets online or at the gift shop before climbing over 200 stairs to reach the top. The friendly staff provides insightful information about the lighthouse's history. With limited capacity for safety, visitors can enjoy a guided tour with enthusiastic park rangers. The breathtaking panoramic view from the top makes it worth the visit, offering a glimpse of the Outer Banks and surrounding areas.
This is a great place to visit with kids! My children learned about this lighthouse in 4th grade, so of course we had to come see it while we were in the area! It has such a neat history. They open ticket sales for each day at 7am on the recreation.gov website, so I made sure to get mine right after they went live. It seems though that they might have tickets still left in the afternoon in the slower months. The marsh area was also great to check out and we saw a Great Egret fishing for food!
N W — Google review
A very nice little lighthouse. It was very peaceful. Unfortunately you had to buy tickets in advance to climb to the top. It looks like you previously were able to walk in on the first floor however now you can't due to some people going up to the top without tickets. We checked out the marsh boardwalk which was cool!! The views are very pretty. Some people lost hats over the side lol.

Visited the Bodie Island Lighthouse during our way home from vacation in OBX. Since Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was closed for renovations, visiting Bodie Lighthouse let me fulfill my wish to climb to the top of a historic OBX lighthouse. The intricate ironwork and craftsmanship of the circular staircase was amazing. And yes, my calf muscles felt it at the halfway point but getting to the top was well worth it. The view is spectacular! Tip: it's easy to buy lighthouse climb tickets while visiting —there is a scan code at the front entrance to the lighthouse. The times are usually 11am (every 20 mins with groups of 8 people at a time) till 5pm, at least during weekdays. Tickets purchased at recreation.gov [Note, we visited a week after Labor Day, it may be more crowded during high season. You should still check the recreation website, it has a wealth of OBX info]

Stopped with the girls to check out Bodie lighthouse on a recent girls trip. Was shocked by how beautiful and picturesque the actual lighthouse and the grounds were. We didn't get a chance to the top of the lighthouse as you need to purchase tickets in advance, but that is an option if you plan accordingly. The employees on grounds were extremely informative, friendly, and knowledgeable. We were on our way out but one of the rangers was just about to give a presentation on the lighthouse and its history. Definitely a cool little sightseeing spot for visitors and locals alike.

Overall a pleasant visit. What a great surprise, there was a 0.4 mile scenic walk too. Great view, informative guidelines on local plants and animals. Has a bathroom and that made it extra nice.

Wonderful experience. The grounds and lighthouse were great to view and well maintained. My one disappointment was that the beautiful 2 story house was not being utilized. We arrived and walked up the cement sidewalks (not damaging the dry and stressed grass from summer) only to discover doors locked and the bldg not assessable. We read the info board on the porch and proceeded around to the lighthouse itself. With budget cuts and costs I understand but a gift shop in a metal “prefab office box” was very disappointing, again I wish the beautiful original house could be better utilized. Overall it was a nice facility and we enjoyed the views.

The park rangers are the best of the best! So sweet and knowledgeable, I highly recommend this lighthouse if you’re nearby. Do the tour, the view is stunning from the top!
Katelyn K — Google review
Really nice light house that is beautifully maintained. We got there and realized that you need to get the passes on the internet prior to arriving because there is a wait. They only send up small groups every ten minutes or so. The grounds and area around the lighthouse is beautiful. Also beware of the weather conditions because they might not allow you up or outside at the top.

Wildlife refuge
Outdoor Activities
Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, situated between the Bonner Bridge and Rodanthe on Hatteras Island, is a haven for over 400 species of migratory birds. Along NC Highway 12, visitors can observe snow geese, pelicans, cormorants, and various shorebirds in the saltwater ponds bordering the refuge. Further exploration may reveal rare feathered guests like great blue herons and ibises.
If you’re driving through this area. This is a great little stop. Really nice volunteer staffed visitor’s center. Great hiking trails that are easy and accessible. Restrooms are fine park style ones. Lots of areas to view wildlife.

Love this beach. It is wide open, clean, and easily accessible. Very few people any time we went. The folks at guest center are always super friendly and helpful. Be careful crossing the highway. If you like looooonng walks on an uncrowded beach, this is the place for you.

Our family when here while visiting OBX. Was right after the hurricane, so most waters were closed, but we had a blast! GHOST CRAB hunting was exactly as exciting as we thought it would be!! We were the ONLY ones there for ghost crabs haha. Had the entire area to ourselves! It’s says “day access” but as long as ur not IN the water, police leave u be. Also, we saw a Sea Turtle site roped off…which was on my bucket list. Was too dark to get a pic unfortunately but I have my memories! Very important that u read the signs, going in and those put up ON the beach!! They’re there for safety. I would HIGHLY recommend Pea Island for ghost crabs haha hunting at night & for daytime swimming . Beach is maybe 200 ft walking distance from the parking lot…through the sand. No surprises in there thankfully haha. 10/10, would definitely recommend this location ! And yes, that’s me screaming in the video, where my kids and husband chased some crabs over to me to scare me when I wasn’t paying attention lol

Beautiful seaside wildlife refuge to watch a variety of birds. If you are lucky you can see pelicans along with terns and other seabirds. There is a pond full with turtles including snapping turtles. But the trails are bushy and don't forget to use bug spray. The people in the visitor center are really nice. However, the bathroom was kinda dark. If you are visiting in the weekends you might have to roam around for parking. The parking lot was not that big, and people who visit the nearby beach always park there.

Pea Island is a beautiful wildlife refuge!! This island offers gorgeous views and plenty of nature sight-seeing opportunities!! Across the street from the visitor center, at the beach, you can see an old shipwreck.

North pond trail is awesome. Bring your binoculars or scopes to watch birds. We saw few big fishes jump out of water. Weather was nice. At the end of the trail there is an observation deck with some old viewing scopes. We saw a deer, bunch of turtles and various birds. Parking is very limited so we had to wait a bit to find a spot. There are restrooms there. Visitor’s center also has some binoculars and scopes you can use to view the area.

Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site and Museum

Sights & Landmarks
The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site and Museum is a well-preserved museum that showcases the history and equipment of maritime rescue. It was once part of the historic Life Saving Service stations, which protected the Outer Banks shores and passing ships. The main building houses a museum and gift shop, while outbuildings include crews' quarters, kitchen, and original storage stocked with antique rescue equipment.
We stopped by here while visiting the Outer Banks for the first time this September. We had a wonderful experience. I wish I had gotten her name but the woman working there was so informative not only on the lifesaving station history but on the community history as well. The history is fascinating and it was nice to walk around and explore the grounds and buildings. It prompted us to go explore the nearby Oregon Inlet Station as well, which is currently closed up but beautiful. I purchased a few books there and am starting to learn more about the history of the Lifesaving Stations as well as the Coastguard and Carolina shipwrecks. Would definitely recommend a stop if you are visiting the area.

Amazing history of the Life Saving Station history. It had to take alot of moxie to get in a wooden boat and save those people. Very informative and displays were great.

This was a wonderful place to visit while vacationing on Hatteras Island. We drove 30 miles to visit, and it was worth it! There's so much history preserved and presented in a wonderful way. There is an entry fee. It's a self-guided tour starting with a video and a brochure full of facts about the different sections of the museum.
Janet S — Google review
Looks very promising. Unfortunately, they're not open on weekends. We walked around a bit and took some pictures. I looked up the history and the story's behind it, and it sounds like a good reason to come back.

This lifesaving station is a MUST stop! Spend 1-3 hours there depending on how deep you want to go. The volunteers are very knowledgeable and the exhibits are good. This place documents the important history of the lifesaving service along the Atlantic coast, which eventually became the US Coast Guard. the kids will entire the view from the top of the building!

We landed up here on a whim, and ended up in a field trip with an group of 4th graders. Not only was the tour super educational and entertaining, but it felt good to feel like I was on a field trip again. Lol. This place is definitely worth checking out. I'm just bummed that I didn't pick up one of the local books!

This place is beautiful and full of historical significance. We we're lucky enough to catch a drill reinactment and it was so neat! They are on Thursdays at 2pm definitely something to check out. The artifact and old life saving gear are fascinating, as well. The view from the tower is like none other. This site is $8 well spent.

So cool. I wish I could have seen the drills they run on the beach, but I wasn't able to come back the following day. Learn about the USLSS (Life Saving Service) and the Revenue Cutter Service, predecessor to the US Coast Gaurd.

Sights & Landmarks
Rodanthe Pier Place is a must-visit spot in the laid-back town of Rodanthe, offering a great opportunity for fishing and leisurely walks. The pier is just a short distance from Buxton, where the famous Hatteras Island Lighthouse stands. Visitors can enjoy various activities such as surfing and kayaking in nearby Kitty Hawk. The pier provides an excellent fishing experience with no license required, and visitors can also rent fishing poles.
Great spot to fish! The staff is nice and knowledgeable and you cant beat the great view. Music on Friday nights is fun and the drink/snack prices are very reasonable.

Really nice pier for quality fishing. Good little gift shop. Nice views. Costs 2 bucks to go out. Parking said it was 15 bucks. I didn’t see where to pay, and no one bothered us. That might have been because it was the off season, though.
Jason M — Google review
Beautiful blue water, amazingly nice locals, and views that'll be in my memory bank for a lifetime.
Brittany M — Google review
Fun pier - $2/person entry fee which was annoying. Wind and water were too crazy to enjoy it, but I can see the allure. Lots of people fishing. Store attached has a bathroom and sells the necessities, (lures, ice, beer, drinks, etc).
John B — Google review
Found this pier by accident and so glad that I did. The only pier that is very welcoming of dogs and overall had a friendly atmosphere by both the people running it and those also on the pier. The views were great and a lot of benches for both those who want to fish or just enjoy the ocean. The price to walk out on the pier was about $2, which is a lot less considering what some of the other piers cost. Only thing that I would mention is that the parking lot could use better maintenance, but overall it is a great place for a quick visit and an out of the way spot.
Esther-Rose M — Google review
Cool pier, friendly people, dog friendly. Easy parking also.
Jul T — Google review
Excellent pier was just 4 mins from the place we rented. Will be back next year when we come back to OBX again for vacation. One day of catch included sheepshead, pin fish, red drum, black drum, blow toad. Good variety. Wait for mackerels to come and they can be caught on this pier as well. Staff was nice and friendly. Side joke if he reads this review "squish". I highly recommend not skipping this pier if your in the area.

This is a really wonderful beach and you could walk for a long time, it's good for finding small seashells I love coming in the morning or evening just after sunrise or before sunset because you can see a lot of little crabs going across the sand. The crabs are on the beach all the time but it's the easiest to see them when you can see their shadow. Depending on when you go you'll see washed up jelly fish too. I once found a large, whole conch shell too

REAL Watersports

Classes & Workshops
REAL Watersports is a hub for athletes and adventurers seeking lessons, gear, competitions, and a vibrant community. The Watermens overlook the sound where various water sports equipment like kiteboards, kayaks, and jet skis are available. Visitors can also enjoy smoothies, wraps, and grilled seafood. The surf school offers professional coaching in a welcoming and safety-conscious environment.
A few friends and I just completed the Zero to Hero Wing Foil Camp at REAL, and we were blown away. From start to finish, the experience exceeded all expectations. The instructors were incredibly knowledgeable and made a huge difference in our progress. Before the camp, we had tried (and failed) to wing foil on our own—but by the end of Day 3, we were gliding up on foil and feeling confident enough to take our new skills back home. Nic Baac and Brendan Guthrie were our instructors, and they were absolutely phenomenal. Patient, attentive, and completely in tune with both us and the ever-changing conditions. Whenever the wind shifted, they were quick to adjust our wing size or tweak the setup so we could keep progressing. What initially felt like an intimidating sport quickly became approachable and genuinely fun, thanks to their consistent encouragement and expert coaching. Honestly, if I could take their positive energy and mindset into other parts of my life, everything would probably get a little better. Beyond the amazing instruction, the culture and atmosphere at REAL are truly special. Every team member we encountered was welcoming and knowledgeable. Jeff helped me pick out a new wetsuit, and his recommendation was spot-on—thanks to his deep expertise, I ended up with the perfect suit for the conditions. We stayed at the Waterman’s Retreat in one of the cabanas, and it couldn’t have been more convenient—just steps away from REAL. The cabana was clean and comfortable, with cozy beds and a handy little kitchenette. The rates were also really reasonable. And the on-site restaurant? Outstanding. We ate there several times, and every meal hit the mark. If it were located back home in Durham, it would definitely be in our regular rotation. The staff was attentive, the beer glasses stayed full, and the tuna sandwich is an absolute must. In short, whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience under your belt, REAL is the place to go for wing foiling or any wind/water sport. The conditions are consistent, the launch area is clean and accessible, and the water is perfect—deep enough to foil, but shallow enough to stand if you need a break. It’s easy to see why REAL has earned such a stellar international reputation.

I called Real Watersports a week ago that showed a board in stock online to confirm dims, and condition. The team said it was in perfect condition and brand new. I ordered the board to be shipped. Upon receiving it, it was clear the board had a significant repair done to the board. The bottom was sanded and filled in which they did not disclose. After contacting the team they offered a discount for the blemish and to refund my deposit which I received. The support was good and responsive, but I do think if someone didn’t know any better, they may have gotten taken advantage of with a blemished board at full price.

I’ve had two trips to Real W., and the goal was to put the bits and pieces I’d learned from two other places together over 4 years and become a self-sufficient kite boarder. The two instructors had different styles, but were both great. Ryan Osmond, who’s no longer there, started the process and managed to get me up riding and we had a variety of kites due to varying wind conditions which introduced a level of difficulty I’d not encountered before. With limited board skills I was certainly challenged, but Ryan remained positive, and slowly, I began to grasp some of the concepts I’d not learned in previous lessons. When I returned for my next set of lessons, I was lucky enough to be paired with Jesse Barkume, with whom I gelled immediately and we had a variety of conditions that allowed us to review water starts, heel and toe side, self-rescue, and to learn transitions which was a satisfying accomplishment for me. Being able to change direction for a bigger was huge for me, and it was the highlight of the trip. I have some personal hurdles to deal with but hope I get the opportunity to return next year and work with Jesse again. I’d also like to mention how wonderful all the Staff members were in every area of the site. Everyone I met was kind and welcoming, from Amory and Jessie to Rob, Jason and all the rest of the crew. I look forward to seeing everybody again!

Perfect trip to foil the longest wave in the world at REAL Chicama 2025! REAL staff was top-notch, the resort was unreal (food, accommodation, staff and set up for surfing/foiling). Never thought I’d catch a 3-4 minute wave once - but many times! Jeff, Austin, Joey great instructors and facilitators. Can’t say enough about this this trip.

I just received a full foil package from Real Watersports in the US (I live in Canada). Being new to the sport and living in the Canadian prairies where this gear is not available, it is intimidating and overwhelming to chose foiling components. Being able to order a full, high quality package from one source is much appreciated. Being able to order a package that has been tested in similar conditions to what I will be foiling in, made the jump into the sport much more palatable. The package included all components, hardware, and tools, to fully assemble a complete board and foil. I ordered the Axis “Wake Thief” 1150 pump and glide setup and the Axis components arrived in their own protective bags. The entire shipment arrived within a week of being ordered, was well packaged, and shipped with zero damage to the box it came in. Overall 100% happy with process. My only comment would be to offer / include a board bag in the foil package so that the entire setup can be more easily transported. Huge thanks and big thumbs up.

"The Country Club of Watersports!" My family had a great time staying at REAL for a week of wingfoiling lessons and time to explore the outer banks. The whole staff at REAL is fantastic, everyone is engaged and authentically motivated to work in and around a sport they love. The accommodations at the Watermen's retreat were great for our family of 5 and we were super impressed with the food at the Bar & Grill. It's amazing they had so many good food options that you could have great meals throughout the week while not resorting to fried foods. I look forward to visiting again someday!

Absolutely amazing experience and completely life changing for my family! The kids loved it and are now begging to go back! Visitors can find works from local and regional artists, with a range of prices to suit different budgets. The knowledgeable and friendly staff provide recommendations for other places to visit in the area.
This is a lovely gallery that has some wonderful pieces from many artists. The collection is well curated and the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. Many local and regional artists work are sold in this store. Currently, this store is asking that patrons continue to wear masks and use hand sanitizer when they come into the store to protect patrons and the staff. Otherwise with multiple customers it is very tight so it would be difficult to distance. Will be back to visit this lovely gallery when put on the OBX in the future!

We stopped in here on a recent trip to Rodanthe. The gallery has some beautiful pieces to admire. The owner was so friendly and she gave us some great tips on other places to go. There was a wide selection of items including jewelry, pottery, photography, watercolors, prints, woodworking, and I'm sure I'm forgetting others from local artisans. Be sure to look up to see the beautiful handmade canoe hanging on the ceiling as well. We look forward to stopping in again on our next trip.

The bathhouse, picnic tables, grills, and huge parking lot provide ample space for visitors to relax and take in the peaceful surroundings.
This is the best place to watch the sunset. We waded out into the water and sat down to watch the sunset. One night there were kiteboarders to watch. It gets a little crowded on the shore but not in the water.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Outdoor Activities
Cape Hatteras National Seashore, spanning over 70 miles from Bodie Island to the southern tip of Ocracoke Island, offers a diverse range of attractions. The iconic Bodie Island Lighthouse, dating back to 1872 and open for public visits since 2013, stands as a prominent landmark. For nature enthusiasts, the national seashore provides four campgrounds with beach access and wildlife viewing opportunities.
A coastal storm, came together with an astronomical (full moon ) tide and caused a wash over. 3:30 AM I woke to the sounds of thundering breakers sixty feet in front of our beach front efficiency unit along with the beep, beep, beep of the excavator plowing away tons of sand to prevent the tidal surge from running down rt 12 and flooding the town. At nine AM, I called the motel office. I said, "Good morning. Well, the cable TV is out, There's no water, the stairs got washed off, there's pipes and planks all over the sand, four feet of which is covering the parking lot and the building's been swaying in the strong winds and it's been shuddering as the waves crash into the pilings." They told me the building is designed to do that and that this is Cape Hatteras. This happens all the time. So, if you want to make your vacation a little more adventurous, stay in a beach front unit in Buxton on Cape Hatteras in North Carolina in November. Fishing and birdwatching opportunities abound. But fishing is grudgingly giving way to surfing, sail boarding kite boarding and para surfing as a new wave of sport enthusiasts come here to harness the energy of the wind and waves. There's raw beauty here and real weather as the Labrador and Gulf Stream currents converge on the easternmost point of Cape Hatteras. Everyone has high clearance 4wd vehicles. Here, those big pickup trucks are more than just phallic symbols. They allow you to drive the beaches, even when those beaches cover the roads.

Wow a day! Bought our Annual Beach Permit, and today's weather was amazing. One of our favorite beaches and always clean! Everyone was respectful. It was so clean!
Adriana V — Google review
This used to be one of our favorite beaches. The storms out at sea made the surf a bit rough and unfortunately significant beach erosion was a problem. Once over the dune, the drop off to the beach was almost impassible and only 20-30 feet of beach to the breakers remained. Until this is remediate, I would avoid the area around Waves, NC.
Stephen W — Google review
It's beautiful. If you have 4 wheel drive you can get a permit to drive on the beach. Plenty of good shells can be found. Roped off areas to protect turtles and beaches. Fishing can be good at times.
Larry H — Google review
Love this place! Regardless of the problems as of late. Two years ago, I was there for a week before they shut the beach down in Buxton. Apparently, the US Navy left toxic stuff in the ground, and it's now still leaking on the beach. This year, I go back, and it's even worse. Then, a wind event took out all of buxton Beach, exposing even more of that old Navy base. Didmt get.to see much of the beach there, but I did go to the point twice. Lovely place despite setbacks history dealt them.

Avon Fishing Pier, built in 1962, is a historic landmark on Hatteras Island and the first pier on the island. The 600-foot wooden pier offers day passes for anglers and sightseers. It features a tackle shop, snack shop, and gift shop providing all necessary angling supplies.
$2 to be entertained by fishermen (and women!) and see one of the coolest and most warped piers I’ve seen - and I’ve seen a lot. There were some surfers that were exciting to see out there and the guy at the counter gave me a subtle compliment that he could tell I worked out so 5 stars all around for hospitality! The pier is long so wear sunscreen and snap a photo on the giant Adirondack chair in the lawn out front!

The nor Easter prevented most people from catching any fish at this time. The waves were rocking underneath of the pier floor and running about 7- 10' regularly. For happiness, seek the Lord.
Vince M — Google review
It's a decent pier, the staff recognized my son was disabled and did not charge me for him to fish. Which that's the first time ever in 15 years of going to OBX and hitting different piers with my son that that's ever happened. The end of the pier is roped off so if you are trying to fish for mackerel or blues with a gotcha you won't be able to. It's for live bait fishing only. I recommend the pier, I just wish they would let folks go all the way to the end that wan't to fish for mackerel or blues do so.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Sights & Landmarks
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, built in 1870, is a revered and iconic structure that offers visitors the opportunity to climb to the top for breathtaking views. In 1999, the entire lighthouse was moved from its original location due to concerns about erosion. This move sparked debates among various groups but ultimately secured the lighthouse's future.
The lighthouse is the tallest in the US. Unfortunately we couldn’t climb due to it undergoing restoration, however this was the first time in a few decades the park ranger said the lighthouse was completely unpainted. It’s also pretty interesting knowing the history of how they moved the lighthouse 2900ft in 23 days. Definitely a go to. Can’t wait until it opens back up to climb!

We went on the hottest week on record. It was miserably hot and the musuem house was a bit of a walk from the parking lot. The house had no AC and was basically an oven. The light is closed due to renovations. Free entry. No tickets required.
Philip F — Google review
It is in the process of being refurbished. We did get to see the original red brick! The gift shop is open. Just be prepared for construction. But it still is pretty impressive.
Cheryl B — Google review
The lighthouse is an icon of mine, from many visits as a child. I even honeymooned at the park years ago. This time we were surprised to find it paintless, covered in scaffolding, and only viewable from a distance. Even so, we were glad we visited. Winds from two offshore hurricanes made eerie tunes through the scaffolding. It was a unique experience in an old favorite spot.
Marilu C — Google review
Good lord, what a job they are doing to refurbish the light house. I'm glad to see it being kept up. Sorry we missed really seeing it all done. Great gift shop and nice restroom. I am looking forward to coming back and seeing the restoration completed.
Nancy C — Google review
Unfortunately the lighthouse is under repairs. It was supposed to complete in fall of 2025, but they found additional structural issues at the top & awaiting additional funding TBD. The gift store/visitor center & museum are open though.
Hung D — Google review
It's being stripped and repainted. Lots of layers of paint. Inside photos are of the museum beside it. It's a museum dedicated to the life-saving crews and the keepers of the lighthouse

Even though it was closed for moving and renovations. It was nice to see in person and get to learn about the lighthouse and the purpose of it getting moved and how long it has been in the works.

Equine Adventures provides an opportunity to explore the tranquility of the Outer Banks and its pristine beaches through horseback riding tours. The company ensures that each rider is paired with a suitable, well-cared-for horse for their skill level. Riders can enjoy excursions along Frisco beaches and through the trails of Buxton Woods maritime forest. Visitors have praised the active and happy demeanor of the horses, emphasizing their well-being and enthusiasm during rides.
What a wonderful morning ride! The horses were ready for us when we arrived. The guides gave detailed instructions with demo prior to leaving the ranch and again during the ride. This is great for inexperienced and experienced riders. The guides took our pictures at the ocean and we never had to leave our horseback. Very well worth the money. PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO TIP if you enjoyed yourself. These folks work hard to keep their animals happy and healthy, and you safe! Thank you, ladies!

My loving husband brought me up here from Rome,Ga. Riding horses on the beach was on my bucket list,,it was the best thing able to gallop on the beach and walk in the surf. The horses were beautiful and well cared for mine wasn't afraid to walk thru the waves or afraid to run his name Jet. I would recommend coming out I truly enjoyed and will never forget. Thank you Ladies with all my ❤️ 💜 ❤️

I had such a fun time on the horse tour! My horse was Pumba, and while he was definitely on the lazy side, it was exactly what I needed as a first-time rider. He made me feel safe and comfortable the whole time. Another horse in our group was Jet, who had a little more energy, so it was fun seeing the different personalities. The guide was super patient and made the whole ride easy to enjoy, plus the views were beautiful. Overall, it was a really peaceful and memorable experience. I’d definitely recommend it!

My daughter and I had the most amazing time! Such nice staff and wonderful horses. Very well trained and sweet. The people are very laid back and make this experience so fun and enjoyable. The ride on the beach was amazing, a real dream come true. We plan on making this one of our yearly vacation activities 🩵

I rode last week with Equine Adventures. We rode with Haley. She took great pictures for all of us and was very informative about our surroundings while we rode. My 2 daughters, their 2 friends and myself are experienced riders as we own and ride our own horses. We had a great time. We enjoyed our ride and the beach very much. I cannot recommend enough for everyone to come try this out. I cannot thank you all enough for making this happen for us.
JMB — Google review
This was an incredible experience and exceeded my high expectations! Well worth the two-hour drive from Duck. They paired us with horses ahead of time and Sebastian was amazing. I expected a trot on the beach but it seemed my horse was full-on galloping which I was very happy about given I have not been able to do that on other trail rides. Not only did the trail guides check on everybody throughout but checked our gear before the galloping to make sure everybody was safe for going fast on the beach, confirmed who wanted to go fast before we got out there, and took out pictures before we headed back. We will be back for sure!

Spectacular experience…. One of the Crown Jewels of our trip to Outer Banks… Kallie n Kayla (sp?) were wonderful…the horses docile n sweet… the trail walk thru the woods as enchanting as the ventures along the ocean….highly recommended… salt of the earth experience… very worthy
Lora A — Google review
Had an amazing time with my daughter on an early morning ride with our guide Hailey! She got to ride Pirate and I rode Rooster. Incredible experience that is definitely going to be a core memory for us both - my girl is now begging to start horseback riding lessons! Highly recommend the early morning tour if you can snag one. Make sure you use bug spray prior to riding, as you do spend a good amount of the ride in the woods going to and from the ocean. Thanks again…can’t recommend this enough!

Drive slow, idiots fly kites from the ‘tracks’ and jump out onto them in oblivian. Patience will get you a prime spot, sometimes it’s worth it to go up all the way near 48. Much less ‘political’ this year (2022) so far. Beautiful stretch of beach to spend the day.

The Hatteras Island Ocean Center is a great museum that offers an educational and interesting experience for visitors. The director takes visitors on sound tours to explore the creatures found in the area. Children can learn about preserving resources and protecting animals such as turtles through programs like turtle patrol, which has knowledgeable and friendly staff members who are willing to answer all questions. The center also provides information on the marsh ecosystem. A stop at this museum is definitely worth your time if you're in town!
This is an interesting place to spend time and soak up learning about the ecology of this fascinating area of the outer banks. (also -- there is a great ice cream store NEXT DOOR!) lots of science exhibits and interesting items about the locals. I VERY nice boardwalk that goes out into the marsh. There are items for sale as well.
Mike L — Google review
We visited this center in February and it was closed. The two stars are because of all the unfriendly signs not to park and the advertising of a marsh trail that is just a few meters long. It is a shame that so rich in wildlife habitat is being all to millionaires to bind second homes instead of prioritizing nature.

The Ghost Crab event for kids is wonderful! Our guides were two College students who could not have been more personable, or pleasant with our son. They were knowledgeable about the Sea Turtles, the local environment and provided lessons to the kids in a way that seemed appropriately scaffolded to their individual levels. Not to mention, the finding of the Ghost Crabs, and Smore's. If your visiting the Hatteras area, I would highly recommend you partake.

This may be a small building, but it is packed with amazing displays and information. It has tons to see and a number of great activities as well. My family did the Marsh Madness and loved being able to feed and 'fish' for crabs. The staff if friendly and knowledgeable, making this a great place to visit.

We had a great time at the Ocean Center! The staff was extremely helpful in providing information about things that would be good to checkout while we’re here, and the museum had some really interesting information about the history of the area and wildlife we might see while we’re here. It has definitely been a highlight of our trip, and we look forward to coming back when we can take a nature tour!

My wife and I were looking forward to the pedestrian ferry trip to Ocracoke. The trip over was very nice; the ticketing and instructions from the staff was a bit arcane but all in all it was a nice trip over. Trip back… mechanical problems struck before we loaded (thank heavens. I would hate to have been stranded mid-way back) so we were transported via bus to the car ferry for the return trip. All in all it was a total cluster.

Took the pedestrian ferry trip and had a smooth ride both ways despite the bad weather. Pat is amazing and definitely needs a raise!!
Jasmine V — Google review
None of the employees walking around notified those of us waiting in our cars that one of the ferries was out of service, nor that there would be a 2+ hour wait for the ferry. People pulling up less than 10 minutes before scheduled departure got on, but those of us waiting for hours are still sitting here waiting. For an hourly ferry service, that is “free” the service is terrible. Prepare to be there early and wait hours on end. Do not make any plans to be anywhere in a hurry with the poorly managed ferry service.
RJ K — Google review
Although we had to wait, the free WiFi kept us busy. Schedules are available on their website.
André B — Google review
Their schedule said every 30 min but my family waited well over 1hr 20min before a ferry was able to accommodate people, even on a Thursday that wasn't very crowded. On the way back we waited another 1.5 hrs before a ferry arrived. If you're trying to schedule a day on Ocracoke make sure to add an extra 2 hours for the DOTs unreliable ferry schedule.
Drew D — Google review
Horrible, waited 2 hours and they let cars that literally just pulled up on and then not enough room was gonna have to wait another hour

Lifeguarded Beach, also known as Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach, is a top destination in the Outer Banks. It offers miles of pristine sandy shores and is easily accessible from Ocracoke Village. This beach stands out as the only one in Ocracoke with a full-time lifeguard on duty from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Visitors praise its ample parking, accessibility, and various beach activities.
Easily one of the best beaches in the US. This is a spectacular stretch if beach! Technically 12 miles or so long it stretches from Ocracoke inlet to Hatteras inlet. I'm talking about the part close to the town of Ocracoke just passed the airstrip. I've seen whales twice and dolphin pretty much every time I go. There is a well kept changing/bath room and outdoor showers. The boardwalk to the beach features a wheelchair friendly overlook too.

This beach access has a paved parking lot, restrooms, outdoor water, shower to get the sand off and a long walkway leading to the beach. Pne of the favorite so it’s a little busier but a 15 minute walk north on the beach and your usually alone.

The British Cemetery in Ocracoke offers a poignant glimpse into the island's history during World War II. It commemorates the tragic loss of 37 British Royal Navy sailors from the HMT Bedfordshire, which was torpedoed by a German U-boat in May 1942. The cemetery holds the graves of four sailors whose bodies washed ashore on Ocracoke Island and were buried by compassionate locals.
A touching tribute to list sailors serving far from their native home. If you are on Ocracoke, I would highly recommend paying this spot a visit.
Brennan — Google review
A bit of history and remembrance from WWII. "These gravesites contain the bodies of four British seamen. Their ship, the armed trawler HMS Bedfordshire, was on loan to our Navy by Great Britain to help protect our shores during the early days of World War II. On May 11, 1942 the Bedfordshire was torpedoed and sunk by a German sub. All hands were lost and these four were the only bodies recovered. This cemetery is maintained by Ocracoke Coast Guard Station personnel."

Robert H — Google review
On Ocracoke Island, the British Cemetery commemorates four British Royal Navy sailors who lost their lives on May 11, 1942, when German U-boat 558 attacked their ship, the HMT Bedfordshire. Only four remains were found when the ship sank off the coast of North Carolina while searching for enemy submarines; they washed up close to the settlement. Residents of Ocracoke gave a tiny piece of land for their burial as a token of appreciation and respect; this area is now permanently leased to the British Commonwealth, making it, metaphorically, British soil. Each year on the anniversary of the sinking, a memorial ceremony is held with representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard, British Royal Navy, and Canadian forces, honoring the sacrifice of these men who died defending American shores.
Bruce K — Google review
The British Cemetery was created in May 1942 for four sailors, two known and two unknown, that washed ashore from the HMS Bedfordshire after she was torpedoed by German U-boat. To this day the United States Coast Guard station at Ocracoke maintains the property. A British flag flies at all times over the graves of those British sailors. The flag is replaced each year with a new one sent by the Queen of England.

I love the video of Ocracoke people whose families have been there since the beginning speaking in the traditional Ocracoke language! So great…

Loved all the history! It isn't very big so when there's a lot of people it gets really hot and stuffy. We left and went back when it wasn't as crowded. They have a gift store so bring your wallet even though it's free to get in. Didn't take a lot of pictures Even though I wanted to. The information on Blackbeard was interesting. Definitely worth a trip to learn more about the island!

Teach's Hole is a famous waterway where Blackbeard the Pirate met his end and is located near the Springer Point Nature Preserve in the Village of Ocracoke. The area is known for its secluded beauty, featuring massive Live Oak trees, native birds, and salt marshes. The Teach's Hole exhibit offers an informative experience about the life of Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard.
We were so glad we caught opening day!! Having loved Blackbeard from childhood this was a treat! Very informative and a wonderful assortment of info, exhibits and artwork of him. A great gift shop that honestly has the best prices on the island! Meeting the owners waa honestly highlight of my trip over, sweet people that have a love of fur kids like I do. Cant wait to stop next year!

It was a very detailed and interesting Blackbeard exhibit. It was small & crowded so, it was difficult to move without being on top of people. This particular day a family with 4 kids were in front of us so, you can imagine how loud & distracting it was to concentrate and all over the place they were where you couldn't actually enjoy the exhibit. We had to wait in line after each artifact which there was about 28 things. Like I said it was cool exhibit but, we couldn't enjoy at our own pace because of the small space & overcrowdness. I hope to go back again but this time on a rainy day where it's not crowded.

Fantastic store & Blackbeard exhibit!!! Lots of information & really adorable gifts. Owners are wonderful.
Janelle W — Google review
This is a neat little store/exhibit. I wouldn't suggest the exhibit for kids though because it mostly involves a lot of reading from plaques on walls and in display cases. All in all I found it very informative on Blackbeard and my wife loved the pirate-themed shop. Don't expect a large or even small size museum as this is more of a one-way hallway that stretches about 20-25 feet with mostly reading and about 7 or 8 displays.
David B — Google review
I've been coming to Teach's Hole for years, but up until now, I'd only visited the gift shop to restock on pirate stickers and antenna flags. I'd never gone in the Blackbeard exhibit before, but I'm glad I finally did. I'd always assumed that it would be a cheesy roadside type thing, but it's not that at all. The exhibit is a well put together combination of local art, reproduction pieces, and real artifacts sprinkled with legitimately interesting information about the life of Edward Teach a.k.a. Blackbeard. It's not a big exhibit, but if you take the time to read the signs and watch the videos, you could easily spend 20 min or more here. And, of course, the gift shop has plenty of pirate themed items ranging from plastic swords for the kids to real coins recovered from shipwrecks.
Sean F — Google review
This museum is so neat and informative! My husband and I loved it. Honestly, it was my favorite part of our trip to Ocracoke. If you read everything in the tour walk you will learn a lot. Also, gift shop is super reasonably priced. 5 stars all around.

Cute spot on Ocracoke - fun to visit if it's your first time to the island. It is a gift shop/museum. The museum is really small, but relatively inexpensive. You'll find a few illustrations, wood carvings, wooden ships, and dioramas that showcase the infamous Blackbeard, but I'll admit that I was hoping for a bit more. Still a fun conversation spot - worth checking out.

Lighthouses
Nestled on the southern tip of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Ocracoke Lighthouse stands as a cherished symbol of maritime history. Completed in 1823, it holds the title of North Carolina's oldest lighthouse and is the second oldest still operational in the United States. Originally built to guide sailors navigating through Ocracoke Inlet, this charming structure has weathered time and nature’s elements, including lightning strikes that led to its predecessor's demise.
Here’s a well-crafted Google review for the Ocracoke Island Light Station: ⸻ A must-see piece of history on Ocracoke Island! The Ocracoke Island Lighthouse is a beautiful and well-preserved landmark that offers a glimpse into the maritime history of the Outer Banks. While you can’t climb the steps to the top, you can walk inside the lighthouse, which is a rare treat! Access is easy via a short boardwalk, and it’s open to the public and completely free. A friendly and knowledgeable volunteer was on site during our visit to share fascinating stories about the lighthouse’s construction, its keepers, and its role in guiding mariners for over a century. The whole experience is peaceful, educational, and doesn’t take long — plan for about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how much time you spend soaking it all in. You can ride your bike or drive there while exploring Ocracoke, and it makes for a perfect little side trip. Whether you’re into history, architecture, or just looking for a quiet and scenic stop, this lighthouse is absolutely worth a visit!
Abby D — Google review
Not very photogenic at the moment with the ongoing preservation efforts to the keepers quarters, but you can go inside (a relatively recent change) the base of the tower. Climbing is currently not allowed. It's the oldest lighthouse on the Outer Banks and not in the greatest of shape.
Chuck W — Google review
Pretty cute lighthouse. Can see from far offshore. It’s unfortunately closed due to not being safe to climb, however outside structurally it’s beautiful. Again, an unfortunate moment was a man and his preteen and younger children trying to break in, then walking on the land that’s gated off.

There were renovations happening during our visit. However ...we enjoyed talking to the volunteer there and seeing the inside of the lighthouse

Last lighthouse on our OBX visit worth the trip to the quaint island 🏝️ village. We have completed all OBX main attractions.

Beautiful historic lighthouse with a charming old village surrounding it. The area is well-maintained, with several nearby places to grab a bite to eat. A great spot to explore and soak in some local history.

What a great walk. Ride your bike there or take a walk. No parking for carts or cars. Watch the sunset and get some gorgeous views

Quite beach for fishing or just relaxing. About a 10 or 15 min walk from main road. Parking is a good walk maybe 20 mins from beach. It's alot for elderly people. We had to drop everyone off at the start of walking trail and drive to a parking lot a few mins away then walk back to the trail. No parking next to trail. Bit of work getting there. Not good for wheel chairs or those physically challenged. No fees. No bathrooms or food near. Bring bug spray for trail if later in the day mosquitos are bad. Dog friendly.

Beautiful, short and quick walking trail that is 100% worth the visit if you are in Ocracoke. The views of the sound are breathtaking and the beach is appropriate for little kids.

Great place. It takes some walking to get to the trail, but don't be lazy. Walking doesnt kill you. Well worth the time.

Don't miss this amazing magical place! I thank everyone who preserved this beautiful area of the island. It is simply astounding. Benches to sit along the way. The green path or the blue path; both lead to the beach or some other part of the nature preserve. I love how they have little markers pointing out the flora and fauna of the area, such as live oak and even for poison ivy! Little stray cats even wander about. The preserve is only open during the day. There is a gate that locks up the path. There are cemeteries all over the island. There is also a cemetery in the middle of the preserve. Everything is absolutely fascinating! What a gem!

A short, flat out and back with lots to see and gorgeous views of the sound. Definitely worth checking out while on the islands. There's no parking at the trailhead, but it's a brief walk from the lot by the lighthouse.

A delightful additional stop when visiting Ocracoke village. The trail is short and has a handful of historical footnotes of the island's history. The protected beach is safe from waves with plenty of room for children to safely splash and play. There is some shade, but those that are sun sensitive may want to bring protection on the beach. The trail is almost completely shaded.

Parking is not good. But it's a short walk to the trail head. The trail is amazing. I felt like it was 1824. The treasure at the end of the trail is well worth the hike at sunset.
