Specialty Museums
The Whale Museum, located in Friday Harbor, is a must-visit destination for those interested in learning about whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem. The museum features a variety of exhibits showcasing artwork, artifacts, and educational programs focused on different kinds of whales that inhabit the area. One of its highlights is the skeleton of a young orca named Sooke (L-112), offering insight into the process of preparing whale skeletons for display.
Really well done exhibits with lots of information about the orcas and other whales, and very moving stories of some of the individual Southern Resident Killer Whales. Employees were kind and knowledgeable, and I attended a fantastic free talk at the museum by Brad Hanson about the status and health of the Southern Resident Killer Whale pods. If you’re planning a trip to San Juan Island the Whale Museum is whale worth a visit.

We went in on a Saturday. It wasn't crowded. Good collection in the display and an audio tour we can listen along as we move through the exhibits.
Asha M — Google review
An interactive museum, well-equipped and educational. Excellent for taking small children, as it has a children's area. I liked that, despite having two floors, it has a wheelchair for guests to climb if needed. It's a quick tour; I highly recommend visiting.

Amazing! This is a must see whenever you are in Friday Harbor! Kids & adults, so much to learn, experience and explore. The gift shop has something for everyone 💙💚💙
Bambi M — Google review
My partner and I came here for our third anniversary. We both thought this was one of the best museums we’ve ever been to. The staff are clearly enthusiastic and well-informed about marine life. The exhibits upstairs are curated with extraordinary care for the animals that they depict. In particular, the interactive phone booth in the corner was clever. It was a wonderful way to hear the animals through a “filter” — the phone’s antiquated crackle and sense of distance — as a simulation, perhaps, of the underwater transmittance of that information. We had a lovely time. Thank you for having us!
Michelle C — Google review
The museum was very informative and have really cool exhibits. The woman working there was very nice and friendly as well. I also really liked the unique finds in the giftshop that had many items from local artists
Allison H — Google review
GOOD AT EDUCATION BUT MUSEUM NEEDS AN UPGRADE The people here are passionate about educating humans on these wonderful creatures and what can be done to protect them. However, the museum itself looks like it's from 1992 with very little interactivity and, in this day and age, that's expected. I hope they receive funding to update, as this is the perfect spot to learn about whales and then go out and see them in their natural habitat. On the plus side, the gift shop was good with a nice range of products.
Linda B — Google review
Informative museum focused on conservation and respectful, careful study of and interaction with marine wildlife (especially whales). The exhibits are interesting, and there's lots to read about whales on the self-guided tour. Experience standing inside the ribcage of an orca, seeing a whale brain vs. a human brain, listening to whale calls, and other interesting and interactive displays. There's also a nice little gift shop and videos about whales. Well worth a visit.

Pelindaba Lavender Farm is a serene 25-acre expanse with stunning views of the Olympics. Visitors can explore the fields, participate in family workshops, and even cut their own lavender. The farm offers over 240 lavender products, including essential oils, lotions, and food items available at the gift store. Guests can also savor lavender-infused treats like ice cream and lemonade while taking in the picturesque surroundings.
GET YOUR LAVENDER HIT HERE Like visiting the south of France. The farm is in the middle of the island and the drive is nice, through the countryside. The lavender was nearly done when I visited, but it still smelled wonderful. The gift shop is just lovely with so many products starring lavender, from lavender oil roll-ons to shortbread and everything in between. It's a lovely farm with cutting fields and the grounds are free to visit.
Linda B — Google review
If you're a lavender enthusiast or just curious, this is a stop for you. Informative displays, tea to sample, lot of gift shop items and a picnic area. Walk through the lavender fields and enjoy the setting. Displays include various stages of lavender plant growth. This can be a quick stop or you can spend some time here.
Wayne O — Google review
We were here just before the lavender festival so it wasn't quite in full bloom but it was still beautiful. There are may different rows of lavender and you can cut your own flowers after checking in at the store on property. We took photos and then went into the store. They have many different locations around the country where they sell their products so if you can't come to the farm you can still purchase all they offer.
Michelle N — Google review
I love this farm!! We got some coffee in town and took a drive here and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! We sat at the picnic tables and took in the views and explored the shop. We bought as much as we could that would fit in our suitcases. I'm hoping they have an online shop because I already want more of their lip balm and bath salts. Wonderful people!
Kat M — Google review
My family and I came here for the Lavender Festival. It's really neat to see the rolling fields of purple flowers. There's a ton of bees everywhere in the fields, but they're nice and will leave you alone. You can learn a lot here about growing and cultivating lavender and making it into various products. The festival itself was a lot of fun. They had lots of booths, live music, face painting, and food. The lavender ice cream is delicious!
Chris L — Google review
Lavender lemonade was really good. Their signature dish (beef savory something) was wrapped and cold😅 it tastes okay though. Maybe to keep it fresh for slow traffic. The farm is really nice picnic spot, and great for hanging out with friends/family/kids
Lia M — Google review
Love this lavender experience 💜 The fields are astonishing, no matter the season there is something to see. They have nice pick nick tables to have lunch. 🛍 They have a "gift shop" with everything lavender, foods, cleaning supplies, chocolates, essential oils. I recomend the lemon lavender sorbet, It's delicious. 👤 Service is great, everyone is really helpful 🚻 There are bathrooms on site. 🅿️ They have free parking on site 🐶 pet friendly

Most wonderful experience visiting Pelindaba Farms today. The shopkeeper gave us the grand tour and showed us around. Loved the store. Lavender for the kitchen! Lavender for your bath! Lavender for your pet! And more Lavender.....just in case! We will be back!

Participants can soar through the forest, over a lake, and across wetlands while enjoying breathtaking views of the San Juan Islands. The attraction is suitable for individuals aged 8 and above, making it a perfect family-friendly adventure.
Sophie and Kylie were our guides on our tour last night. We took our daughter for the first time and she was nervous, but they did a great job of making it super fun and put her and everyone in our mixed group of 8 at ease. They were fun and made the whole experience well worth it for any family looking for a good intro into zip lining. They were experienced and it showed how much they just loved the whole experience from actually zipping to meeting people...the guides made it for us and we will definitely recommend this to anyone.
Jaime T — Google review
We couldn't have been more disappointed in this company. We decided to take one day of our three day vacation to zip line over San Juan Island. We ferried early to make the 1 pm zip line appointment ($59), had lunch and waited at the spot we agreed to meet the night before. Thirty minutes prior to our reservation the company called to inform us that they didn't have enough guides to host our zip line tour. They said one of the guides had a migraine and we could wait to see if she felt better by the 4pm tour time. The returning ferry schedule led us to wait, we were called at 3:30 and were told the guide didn't feel better and the reservation had to be cancelled. I completely understand someone being sick, but running a business means having enough workers to cover these situations. The whole experience of working with the company was very unprofessional. Now to the refund... "So sorry, you'll have to work directly with Groupon." Thanks for the great customer service...
A M — Google review
What a great experience especially if this is your first time ziplining ever!!! Our two guides, whose names have suddenly escaped me (sorry, guys, and you were so awesome!) were not only expertly and assuringly safety conscience, but were funny as well! It is obvious they love their job, the sport, and Washington state! Thanks for the wonderful time. Grandson says thanks as well. I would recommend this adventure for any age!! Aha, Ivan and Anchi. Hurrah, I remembered!
Debra K — Google review
The shuttle arrived on time to take us to the site. The instructors (Gauge and Chole) were amazing, funny and clearly explained all the safety rules and what not to do. They also showed us a few zip tricks to increase the fun. The first two practice zips preps you for the remaining higher longer zips. There is a bridge to cross that was, for me, fun-scary but safe.
K B — Google review
We had an awesome experience! Our guides were great! We were all first timers and they made us feel relaxed and comfortable. Worth every penny we will be back! Thank you Ivan and onchie.
Kacy V — Google review
This was the highlight of our trip to the San Juan Islands. It was a great family excursion (our youngest is 8). Our tour guides Lara and Kylie were awesome! Highly recommend!!
Jessica S — Google review
fun little trip, it’s more like 6 zip lines with 2 warm up ones. tour guides were friendly and funny. definitely more of a family fun activity and not exactly a thrill seeking adrenaline rush.
Kc W — Google review
Heidi Anci Bailey via Phone were the best customer service ever. Friendly accommodating and since you aren't in your local area as a tourist I never had to question their quality as local hosts. I felt safe with them through the tour and even the simplicity in getting answers where to meet. Which was a little dead end by the court house at the cul de sac at the end of first st. A little foreplanning goes a long way. Check the ferry schedule before going we went to anacortes Saturday to get ahead information and to scout the area. The ferry we took left at 905 am. Get there a half hour early to park even the overflow parking is a good distance away and we had to run for the ferry. It costs about 90 dollars to take the ferry for car to and back. That's pretty expensive. We opted to walk on for 27 dollars. Once in Friday harbor your can rent little electric cars mopeds or bikes so its not a concern. The ferry system runs on car reservations to guarantee a spot. According to they ferry terminal representative it's not uncommon to get trapped on the island until the next available ferry and hotels run about minimum 300 a night. It's a summer tourist location so they have to make their money during the summer. Feel free to bring a good camera. We packed light since we weren't sure they would have a place to keep our stuff. They opt for us to keep our belongings in the van.

English Camp Visitor Center is a historical site on San Juan Island that commemorates the mid-19th-century Pig War Crisis between the United States and Great Britain. The camp features historic outbuildings, exhibitions, and a boat dock. Visitors can learn about the peaceful arbitration that settled ownership of the island and explore the remains of both U.S. and British encampments.
Very cool historic British military camp. Park rangers were very nice and informative. Parking lot fills up at peak hours.
Austin N — Google review
This area has absolutely great potential to showcase more of the history. The signage and visitor center was very minimal compared to the American Camp on the island. The buildings that remain appeared to house equipment and extra furniture. It would be nice to have those buildings open up and appear like it once was during the time of operating. The trails were marked very little and there we did not see one guide while we were there on Friday, mid day. The English garden was beautiful and many flowers were in bloom. It appeared well maintained. This park has so much potential. If you travel to the American camp too you will see the stark differences.
Jessica — Google review
This review is for the hike up to Young Hill, not the visitor center. Beautiful views toward the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island. Moderate hike with a brief steep section.
Marc S — Google review
Went to the English Camp in August and it was a fun stop along our trip. The video in the visitor center is worth the watch to learn about the camp and the area. We had kids with us, and what made the English Camp fun for them was taking part in the Junior Park Ranger program. We asked for the activity guide, completed it while we explored the park, and then the kids pledged to keep parks safe which earned them a park ranger badge.
Kamry W — Google review
The English Camp Parade Ground is located on Garrison Bay, in the northwest corner of San Juan Island. Since time immemorial, Lummi, W̱SÁNEĆ, Songhees, Clallam, and other Coast Salish people traveled by canoe to the village site some call Pe'pi'ow'elh, Smiuth, and the Lummi Creation Island. When the Royal Marines landed at English Camp, the longhouse was torn down, and used for the military barracks, and fences. Also, the burial site on Gus Island was burned down. Archeologists removed many items to the Burke Museum and recorded that the village site showed years of a living culture as the grounds were filled with clam middens that averaged ten feet high, from thirty-five to forty feet through, by 120 yards long. The shell middens were used to pave the parade grounds at English Camp and pathways to the officers quarters.
Josiah F — Google review
The Pig War has to be one of the most hilarious historical events I’ve ever read about. We weren’t able to visit the opposing “American Camp” but will definitely do so next time. The lady working at the Visitor Center was so kind and went out of her way to outline a path for us to take a stroll. Thank you English Camp for making our Saturday at Friday Harbor!
Moumin G — Google review
Beautiful preserved and enlightening historical park! The trails were well kept and neat. 🌲🥾 Aside from hiking, there is also a stunning formal garden and a blockhouse! It's pretty cool to see the houses across the bay, and the tree-covered Guss Island!

We had a special surprise. A Native tribe was having a ceremony when we arrived. We were told that it was the first native ceremony on that land in 200 years. It was very interesting and educational.

Hurricane Ridge

Ridge
Sights & Landmarks
Hurricane Ridge, located in Olympic National Park, is a year-round destination offering a variety of activities. In the winter, it transforms into a stunning white wonderland and provides opportunities for skiing and snowboarding without the usual high costs and crowds. During the summer, visitors can enjoy scenic drives with breathtaking views of wildflower-filled meadows, mountains, and wildlife such as mountain goats, black-tailed deer, marmots, and bobcats.
If there is any mountain trail that you are considering to do in the Olympic area this is it. There are switch backs closed to the summit and only that part is quite exhausting. But the view is rewarding. We also encountered a snowy slope in June. The trail signs went missing from there on, so we had to improvise a few meters. Hiking poles are really useful. We were told by frequent hikers that you can see a bear if you are in luck, and indeed we did! As we were returning back to the starting point a mama bear and her cub was standing next to the trail. We were prepared with a bear spray and container. We had a very safe encounter. Parking area is large enough. There are toilets and a potable water area.

Gorgeous views and wonderful drive to the top, lots of wildlife if you come up in the morning or late afternoon. Was sad to hear the visitors center burned down a couple years ago, but they have a little pop up if you want some swag. Decent trails in the area as well to help stretch your legs after a winding drive.
Leah B — Google review
Hurricane Ridge has absolutely breathtaking views from mountain ranges to trails, beautiful skies and water! The views of the Olympic Mountains are stunning in every direction, and the drive up alone is worth the trip. Whether you visit in summer for hiking and wildflowers or in winter for snowshoeing and skiing, the scenery never disappoints. The air feels crisp and clean, and there’s something peaceful about being surrounded by such untouched natural beauty. The visitor center staff are helpful and friendly, offering great tips on trails and current conditions. Be sure to bring layers - the weather can change quickly at higher elevations. Overall, it’s one of the most beautiful spots in the Pacific Northwest and a must-see for anyone visiting Olympic National Park!!

10/10! Hurricane Ridge was straight up a painting! It was absolutely breathtaking! We did Hurricane Hill and it took us about 3 hours total but it was definitely worth it. Saw a couple of animals on the way and on the trail itself too! Highly recommend.

Beautiful hike and beautiful views, a climb for sure and it gets hot in the sun so we made sure to take enough water. The overlooks on the way up are beautiful too. Get your NP pass first and enjoy the creation!

Situated 18 miles from Hwy 101, the center provides access to National Forest and private land. I had a fantastic experience at the Olympic National Park Visitor Center! The staff was incredibly friendly and provided excellent recommendations for hiking trails suitable for my family. The exhibits were very well-designed and gave a great overview of the park's diverse ecosystems. The gift shop had a good selection of souvenirs. Parking was easy to find. Highly recommend stopping here before heading into the park!

Closed. The center appears to be closed. I visited today, October 4th and it was closed. There was no sign or information to tell you the status. Just closed down. Bathrooms closed! Does some very nice trails behind the center that are still accessible and very beautiful. So you can still Park and have a nice hike.
Tim T — Google review
Nice place to visit and get a map. The road to hurricane Ridge is right there and you should go up there. Great view from the top in there are actually flushed toilets up there in a little mobile home type set up, but I would still use the bathroom at the visitor center before you go cause it may take you a while to get to the top. We got there two days before the government shut down began. We stayed for several days and I would say that by the third day some of the bathrooms were looking pretty bad. We stayed in the Crescent Lake Lodge, and it was very nice. I’m guessing it’s privately run because they were still open after the shutdown.
John N — Google review
17 Aug 25- Spent 2 days in and around the park. The drive to the park from Bellevue is very scenic lined with tall trees. As we gain the elevation very many beautiful sites greet us. Majestic Olympic range mountains are seen one after the other. The weather was playing truant so we could not see very many of the promised vistas that we see in pictures. We also took a small guided trek conducted by Ranger Ellie Paxson. She was very passionate about the local flora and fauna and explained in great details . She also explained the causes of wild fires and their long term ecological implications. She also answered questions from the visitors. An excellent experience.
Anand S — Google review
Breath taking views amazing nature .... From rainforest to ocean from mountain peaks to lake shore trails... The only down side is you can not share this with your dog. Dogs are not allowed in any trails. Please make sure you check the park web site for possible road closures and current weather conditions. Be prepared for different weather conditions in the same day. Do not skip the visitor centers.
Yasemin B — Google review
We were visiting Olympic National Park in September and staying in Port Angeles. We were glad that the Visitor Center was open and we talked to the ranger. We only had 2 full days to explore this vast national park and we wanted to cover the highlights and hidden gems.

Just love the Olympic National Park. Will definitely come back to explore more when up the Oregon coast and explored several places. Stayed at Push Mora, South Beach, All were great places with great hikes on the beach

One of the most breathtaking places I’ve visited so far — the Hoh Rain Forest in Olympic National Park! 🌲✨ Without a doubt, it’s the crown jewel of the park. The drive itself was nothing short of majestic, winding through lush greenery and dramatic mountain views. To visit, you’ll need either a daily entry pass or the America the Beautiful annual pass — totally worth it for this unforgettable experience. If you're looking to immerse yourself in nature's magic, the Hoh Rain Forest should be at the top of your list.

Travelers can enjoy a day trip to Victoria, exploring attractions like Butchart Gardens and the provincial museum. Booking in advance is recommended as the ferry can fill up quickly. The vessel provides amenities such as a commissary for food and drinks, spacious and clean bathrooms, but some passengers found the boarding process chaotic with little signage or direction.
Easy to purchase tickets online, loading process and going through customs was straightforward in Victoria. Everyone was so polite. Ferry was exactly on time, safety protocols were shared and it was a smooth ferry ride. Once we arrived in Washington, going through customs was quick and straightforward as well. Walked around near the government building while waiting for our ferry which was very pretty. We saw whales and dolphins from our ferry. What’s great way to travel - stress free and on time for a reasonable cost.

Lots of seating options both inside and out. Very punctual departure. We did the passenger only option which was easy walk to either downtown port angeles or main area of Victoria. Relatively smooth ride as the waters were fairly calm on both trips. Can't speak to the vehicle aspect. All in all was nice.

We had a great experience on the Black Ball Ferry. We pre-booked our ticket and we took the first ferry in the morning. Everything went smoothly. We watched the sunrise and we even got to see porpoises! The crew was super friendly and they had a few food options. Everyone was well organized. The boat and bathrooms were very clean. The views were spectacular too. I definitely recommend!

Buying tickets online was easy, and the boarding process in Victoria, including customs, was quick and straightforward. Everyone we interacted with was polite and helpful. The ferry left exactly on time, safety protocols were clearly explained, and the ride itself was smooth and comfortable.

The people at Black Ball Ferry Line have excellent customer service. We don't have any experience with auto ferry services, much less crossing the border by ferry. To avoid showing up at the terminal without a clue, we called ahead to get answers to our many questions. The agent we spoke to was extremely helpful. She made sure we knew what to expect when we arrived at the terminal, where to get in line to purchase "first come, first served" tickets, how they're sold, which documents they'll need to see, and where to get coffee while waiting to depart. She also gave us fantastic advice on how to maximize our chances of getting on the first sailing out of Port Angeles when all reservations for the day were sold out and they were expecting many others to show up hoping to get on any sailing scheduled for that day. We probably would have made it across to Canada eventually but we were very grateful for her advice so that we didn't have to wait around for hours for an opportunity be available. The guys guiding drivers to their loading lanes made sure we had our documents and made sure we were aware there was a still chance we wouldn't make it onto the first sailing. We thought it was great how they kept us informed and managed our expectations. At this point, we didn't care if we were able to board the first ferry because we knew the Black Ball staff was looking out for the us and likely the rest of the travelers that day. The deck hands loading drivers onto the ferry were very good at it. Their directions were direct, concise, and very clear. They alleviated a lot of the anxiety I might have had if I were trying to maneuver my car in and around the vehicle deck without their excellent direction. We didn't have much contact with the ship's crew while we were underway but they seemed pleasant, professional and ready to serve the passengers and ferry. Off loading was just as efficient as loading. Again, the directions were clear and concise. We would have figured it all out ourselves if we had to. Thankfully, the Black Ball staff was very helpful and essentially walked us through all our questions and then some. The Port Angeles Passenger Terminal is clean and comfortable. The restrooms are clean. If you're walking on the ferry, you'll be comfortable while you wait.

Great 90 min ride over to BC Victoria. Ship is clean lots of seating. Pretty area we took our bikes on the Ferry and rode all over down town also Chinatown. We had a blast.

My family and I took this ferry up to Victoria for vacation, and generally enjoyed the experience. I showed up early despite having a reservation, because I wanted to explore the dock area and grab lunch. The process of boarding was very organized, if a bit slow (every car coming off the ferry had to go through a booth despite having already gone through customs in Victoria before leaving). The seating is plentiful if you don't mind sitting outside on the deck (we were lucky and got a family booth inside). The reason I do not give them 5 stars is that the unloading experience was uncomfortable and actually a bit dangerous. There was some sort of parade happening on the road right outside of the ferry, and gobs of pedestrians blocked the entire ferry from unloading. It was extremely stressful to try to leave the terminal, even if you were turning right, because hundreds of people with zero survival skills were stepping out in front of each car en mass. While I know the ferry staff aren't responsible for festivals, I felt like they could have sent one staff member up to the entrance to control and direct pedestrians, or even coordinated with local law enforcement to have an officer do it. It would have been SO much safer with just a little extra effort. I bet it would have been less stressful to the staff too, since there is no way the ferry stayed on schedule with each car taking 5 minutes or more to leave the lot one at a time.

We recently traveled with Black Ball Ferry Line from Port Angeles to Victoria. The ferry was clean and well-maintained, and the staff were friendly and organized. Boarding and disembarking were smooth, and the crossing took about 90 minutes. For 4 people and one car, the round trip cost us about $300. The ferry has a small coffee shop and comfortable seating, which made the journey pleasant. Overall, a reliable and convenient way to travel between Washington and British Columbia.

The Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center is a mountaintop facility offering exhibits on habitats, an introductory film, guided hikes, and a snack bar. The center provides access to several short trails with stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and Strait of Juan de Fuca. One recommended hike is the Hurricane Hill trail, which offers continuous 360-degree views of the Bailey Range with a modest elevation gain suitable for all ages and abilities.
This viewpoint is absolutely stunning! The scenery is breathtaking, with sweeping views of the valley and distant snow-capped mountains on clear days. Wildlife is abundant here—I spotted several deer and even witnessed a hilarious (but intense) showdown of marmot, which seems to be a common sight! When the fog rolls in, the landscape transforms into a mystical, cloud-covered dreamland. Since it sits above the snow and cloud lines, the views are always dramatic, no matter the weather. Summer is the best time to visit, as the snow melts and more trails open up for hiking. Whether you're a photographer, nature lover, or just looking for a peaceful escape, this spot is 100% worth the trip! **Highly recommend!** 🌄🦌🐿️

This is a great visitor center with displays of local wildlife and the local indigenous people’s history and a whole room dedicated to educating children about the park and the wildlife and nature. Some great items in the gift shop as well. Some great maps of the park and the area. I highly recommend it! Right on the way to Hurricane Ridge.

I recommend coming here early in the summer before the wildfires smoke up the place. I came here several years ago and saw nothing because it was smoked out. This year, I came early summer (late June) and ended up with a clear, blue day! Come early in the morning to beat the crowds. There is a shuttle bus you can ride from Port Angeles. It is $1 each way. They do the driving so you can do the looking! We went at 8:00a.m. and beat the crowds. By the time we left at 11:00a.m. the parking lot was almost full. There is no visitor's center at the top. There are nice restrooms, though! There are rangers up there who will gladly answer your questions, recommend hikes, and take your picture.

Very magestic to see in person. Very windy drive to get there. Hike is a pretty steep incline. Wear good hiking shoes. Not much wind on the day I went. It was a 90° day. Use sunscreen on hot days.

We went on Monday, July 7 at about 8:30. No waiting at the park entrance and lots of available parking at the top. The road to the top is well taken care of and plenty wide with lots of overlook pullouts. The views are incredible. We saw several deer and even two little fawns. Definitely worth the drive.
Kim H — Google review
A place of incredible beauty! The deer are almost tame — they walk calmly between cars in the parking lot and aren’t afraid of people at all. The mountains look absolutely stunning. We were lucky to spot marmots and even bears!

The views are stunning. With a short hike, you can see mt. Olympus and Victoria,Canada. It could get way more chilly and windy up there. Plenty of parking but can get full in weekends

Very nice place. The view from the parking lot is amazing. Love the flora and fauna here: Olympic marmots, deer, avalanche lilies, broadleaf lupines, etc. Read the information board for notices and safety. It also has info on trails you can hike here (with description, elevation and lenght), ranger-led programs, and night sky programs.

We just loved this castle!! What beautiful architecture and history! Very well preserved and maintained! You need about 2 hours on the minimum side to explore the entire castle. The staff on site are very welcoming and always with a smile, ready to point out some historical facts or just show you directions. The gardens around the castle are wonderful to explore and there is ample parking around the area. We had a lovely time exploring this history!

It’s amazing to see how one of the richest men in British Columbia built this place. He found coal and became super wealthy, then brought all the bricks and materials from his country, piece by piece, to build this incredible castle. The details inside are beautiful, and you can really feel the history. Definitely worth visiting if you’re in Victoria!

Home of one of the most rich men of Victoria in the late 19th century, the coal magnate Robert Dunsmuir . Its construction finished in 1890 and it is among the largest and most ornate 19th century mansions in Western Canada. It is amazing to see how this family lived at that time and the house has amazing views. There is a souvenir shop and toilets. Save at least 1h for the visit. It will take you around 20 minutes walk from downtown.

Craigdarroch Castle is well preserved and clearly cared for. While some of the original structures and decoration are lost due to the castle's time as a military infirmary and college, it is still beautiful and definitely worth the visit. Whether you want to marvel at the architecture or learn about the vast history of the castle, there's something for you here. Just be prepared for plenty of stairs!
Neil S — Google review
Personally, it wasn’t my favorite place to visit. I felt that the vibe of the place and the symbols I found there were a bit strange or dark. I did enjoy a bit more of the history when it was used as a hospital or as a school. However, they tend to show more of the creepy history of the millionaire’s family who couldn’t see his castle finished. The kids did like it a lot though, so I think it might just be a more personal thing.
Gerardo Z — Google review
Absolutely my favourite castle to visit. I come here anytime I visit Victoria. It’s a great tour you can easily do in an hour. Absolutely breathtaking woodwork inside, the rooms are set up with a lot of the original furniture with a description of what each room was used for in different areas. I would highly recommend this place. It is a lot of fun.my little one loved it!

The BC Ferries Tsawwassen Terminal offers more than just a gateway to the ocean. Situated on a stunning land spit that extends into the water, it provides a unique vantage point of the surrounding city and sea. Reserving tickets in advance is recommended, especially during peak times like summer weekends. The terminal features comfortable seating, desk cubicles for laptops, and even a shop with quality items.
Got on my ferry to Victoria from here, pretty cool experience. The ride was about an hour and we didn't really buy anything on the ferry like food or merch or anything but it was really fun regardless. The wind at the top of the ferry is something to behold and the engine makes my voice sound all robotic, truly amazing. I do recommend the experience not gonna lie...

Busy, but very efficient ferry dock for BC ferries and others to go to islands, such as Vancouver Island. Little marketplace with food outlets and shopping vendors. It's great to have a bite to eat before docking.

Fantastic way to transport car $80 over from Vancouver to Victoria. On time, nice big clean boat, and with a cafeteria on board. Amazing views throughout the ship of the journey. Attraction in itself. Buy tickets in advance, they do fill up, especially when going with a car.

I was in Vancouver last week and decided to take the ferry to Victoria Island. We purchased ticket ahead of time and arrived with our car. It was a very smooth and fast process, you check in at the toll station and you show your boarding pass. They will assign you a lane and you go to the lane and wait for the boarding process. Surprisingly the process was very fast and efficient. They loaded over 200 cars and truck under 10-15 min. Once inside you can turn off your car and go up in the deck. They have nice sitting area, work stations, coffee shop and you can go outside and enjoy the beautiful view. It was a pleasant experience.

We got there just less than an hour from the next ferry to leave for Victoria. We paid at the entrance booth to the ferry terminal. The price for the car and two people was very reasonable. No need to book ahead. There was no extra charge for making the reservation. We got the line to go to and we drove there and placed our car next in line. It seems people get out of their cars and go shopping and eating at the enclosed mall. The building was great! Wonderful quality shops and many nice priced places to eat. Then, off to the car and enjoyed our hour and 30 minute trip. The ferry was pleasant and the view was very nice, Great experience!

BC Ferries are well-organized, speedy and clean. Booking our tickets online proved to be a wise decision, as it spared us any delays upon entering the terminal. Our ferry departed on schedule, and the boarding process was smooth and hassle-free. The surrounding scenery is breathtaking in every direction. Regrettably, the prices are notably steep. Nevertheless, the ferry journey itself was a delightful experience. Brace yourself for the wind on the ferry deck. We captured so many pictures. I thoroughly enjoy boarding the ferry at Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal.

Arrived 1:10 early and they said do we want to go on the earlier boat, yes please. Restaurant closed on Sunday but vending machines. Boat really smooth and the views are amazing of the little islands to Vancouver Swartz Bay. Tip make your way to the sun terrace at the top it’s the warmest and best views.

I Love the ferry terminal. Washrooms are always clean. Instructions are which line up to get in are clear. I think there is lots to enjoy as a casual user. Just be sure to get a reservation as sometimes the ferry can be very busy and it does get boring to have to wait a sailing or two….

Beacon Hill Park is a charming 74-hectare Victorian park in Victoria, B.C. It features beautifully landscaped gardens, ponds, and majestic trees. Visitors can enjoy the sight of peacocks roaming freely and relax by the bandshell. The park offers a serene escape for nature lovers and provides a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls or picnics. With its tranquil ambiance and natural beauty, Beacon Hill Park is a must-visit destination in Victoria.
Beacon Hill Park is near the downtown, easily accessible by walk if you stay somewhere in downtown Victoria. The park is well maintained and you won't feel dangerous while walking around the park. This park would be a perfect spot to take your morning coffee, walk around and get a nice morning breeze. The air quality is so good that you don't want to miss that. You can see Peacocks 🦚  on photos of Beacon Hill Park. Don't get disappointed or give up when you don't see them immediately when you enter the park. The park is pretty big and try to go through the middle and you should be able to find them near Beacon Hill Lookout on Google Map. The park also leads to the shoreline where you can take the stairs down to walk around the beach. Depending on your speed, it may take from 1.5 hours to 3 hours to walk around the entire park. But it's worth it.

Perhaps I've seen too little, but this park is the only place I've visited that has free-ranging peacocks. Of course, there are many other interesting wildlife besides peacocks. It's just blissful to hang out in the park and see all the animals and plants.
Christopher D — Google review
Beautiful park in the middle of downtown Victoria. There is a lot to see and a lot of tranquil pathways to tread through. I'm surprised that this park hosts peacocks, and they can climb trees! Amenities are plentiful, including several washrooms and two playgrounds. There is no shortage of parking spaces in and around the park as well. Definitely a great place to spend time in Victoria.
Kevin L — Google review
I love this park a lot! If you want to take a peaceful break from the daily grind, this park won't disappoint. There are ponds, fountains, ducks, geese, swans, peacocks, squirrels, deer and turtles! Green spaces and beautiful fauna and flora abound! There are washrooms and playgrounds for the kiddos, and lots of benches for weary accompanying adults. The only thing that Beaconhill really lacks is a designated off leash area for dogs (thus the loss of one star). That part I don't understand at all. Downtown Victoria is WOEFULLY lacking in off leash dog parks!!
Catt G — Google review
A nice city park with many ponds, biking path and access to a beach. There were cute features around the park. I didn't see any homeless camps. The children's farm seemed clean ( walked passed by it and didn't smell anything). This park is accessible by a couple infrequent busses and about 25 minutes walk to downtown.

Super beautiful. Been here a couple of times I love the petting zoo and how lovely it is with the peacocks too. Saw a few deers too. Would recommend going in spring or summer

A really stunning and well kept park. Went on a walk and really enjoyed all of the plants and wildlife. There is a trail around the park and lots of nice flowers and statues around to see. It was relatively quiet and not too busy during the afternoon. Overall a nice place to kill some time if you are waiting for the ferry which is about fifteen minutes away.

BC Ferries is an essential transportation option for travelers heading to Victoria, as there are no roads connecting the destination. The ferry provides a smooth and efficient loading and unloading process for vehicles, making it a convenient choice for visitors. Onboard amenities include lounges, entertainment areas, a kids' playroom, washrooms, and balconies where passengers can enjoy scenic views during the journey.
Taking the ferry is beautiful, I have taken both daytime trips, and evening trips and the evening trips by far are my favourite because I can see the sunsets. I definitely recommend buying your tickets ahead of time. Plus it saves you a little bit of money ferry rides are 1.5 hours long. There restaurants on board and a gift shop. There is ample seating on board. Gets quite cool on an evening trip so bring a blanket and or a jacket.

Northern Expedition from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. What an amazing ship, the service is amazing. We didn’t spare any expense we booked a cabin that came in handy we caught a couple of hours sleep once the ship left Port. The aurora lounge we booked and it’s private seating from the rest of the ship the views from there are phenomenal. The food on this ship is a different menu than other BC Ferries I had a really nice prime rib dinner it was top notch and a HUGE piece of prime rib. Once it was dark we caught a movie in the theatre, it was a comfy movie theater. One thing I think BC Ferries should improve on is the gift shop, we would have liked to buy patches for our motorcycle jackets with BC Ferries Northern Expedition on them, people would be interested in buying t-shirts with Northern expedition, hats, so on, personalize the gift shop more and even some souvenirs from the stops we did like bells bella. Other than the gift shop, this adventure was total worth it! my dad told me about this trip years ago and happy we did it. My fiancée and I rode our Harley from Prince Rupert on hwy 16 ( The Highway of tears 🙏❤️) to Prince George on Highway 97 down the Fraser Canyon up to Sea to Sky Squamish and Whistler and Saturday we’re taking tsawwassen ferry to duke point and riding back home to Port Alberni the end of our 12 day journey. I must thank BC ferries staff Chief Steward Krystal Holm her Sister in law Nina, Engineer Mark McEachern you guys made this journey so much more special thank you 🙌❤️

I'm going to have to tell my niece that she's going to have to move out and get a job because according to BC ferries, she's considered an adult at 12 years old. Plus, they've discovered how to make people pay more while offering the exact same product. They have the same number of spots, but now they've started playing the reservation game so you have to pay an extra $20 every time you go otherwise you might have to wait two extra sailings. I've been taking these for years and never saw a problem with just getting to the ferry and waiting your turn. Most of the time you would just catch the next ferry. If there's more people taking them now then they need more ferries, it's simple.
Architype — Google review
Ferry rides are good and their effort to combat the BMW/Mercedes/Lexus car alarms (90% the culprits) has been noticed and appreciated. The hardest part is waking up extra early for the sailings, which are always convenient and useful, not because I'm nervous about missing the sailing but so I have enough time to get breakfast elsewhere so I don't have to spend $45+ for my wife and I on coffee and breakfast sandwiches that barely pass as edible. My biggest (constructive?) feedback To BC Ferries is to ditch White Spot and upgrade their food quality for breakfast and the rest of the day.
Benjamin S — Google review
BC Ferries is such an essential part of life in BC, and overall, they do a great job connecting the islands. The ships are clean, comfortable, and the staff are consistently friendly and professional. Boarding and sailing are usually smooth, and I really enjoy the scenic views from the deck, it’s one of the most beautiful commutes in the world. Food options have improved, though prices can be a bit high and delays do happen occasionally. Still, it’s a unique experience that feels very “West Coast,” and I appreciate the service they provide.
Jenny Z — Google review
Well, they make you leave your cats behind in the car despite having a reservation, not being over height or over length, and arriving at the terminal right in the middle of the recommended window of time for reservations. The options of sitting in a tiny pet room on the upper car deck with other animals or dogs (love dogs - but oddly enough my cats do not), or freezing together on the outer deck in November are just not good enough. There's absolutely no way to indicate you have pets or affect where you end up on the ferry despite doing everything "right" with reservations, and the facilities provided are just not adequate. Do better.
Carlie O — Google review
If you are a tourist and not reliant on this company on a regular basis I would say crossing from Victoria to Vancouver or one of the gulf islands can be a nice experience. Make sure you plan ahead regarding scheduling on most routes. It’s a good way to check out the scenery of the south coast that other wise might be tough to do. However if you rely on this company for regular travel they are dreadful. Mechanical break downs and scheduling delays are a regular occurrence. They rarely have enough sailings in the day and most often reservations are required, which adds 15 to 20% in additional fees. The food onboard is mediocre at best and the staff are less than enthusiastic in most cases. If there were any other option I would take it. That said the views can be spectacular.

Oh my goodness, I haven’t been here since probably grade 5. Took my little girl here today and she absolutely loved it. Old town is my favourite part of the museum. The woolly mammoth is super cool as well. Some of the exhibits are old and some are new. The IMAX is always fun to finish off with.

A truly excellent museum with a wide variety of engaging exhibits. When I visited, there was an interactive exhibit on protest music that was fascinating, and the section on local ecology and geography was very informative. The diorama of the city in the early 1900s is top-notch and really brings the past to life. Be sure not to miss the exhibit on native languages — although small, it’s incredibly meaningful and I wish there had been more of it. Outside, the totem poles on the East lawn are a highlight and well worth the time. Overall, a place that combines history, culture, and education beautifully.

Highly recommended! You can see a precious mammoth specimen here. Other animal exhibits are very lifelike, and the displays recreate the animals’ natural habitats. Employees on strike day we visited so Imax & some areas closed. Museum did not live up to the hype. Second floor natural history displays were poorly lit, hard to read and some videos not working. Disappointing. Best exhibits were on third floor, and covered history of India's manufacturing Chintz. When you see what was involved, you can't not be impressed. Many significant totems, worth seeing. Price of admission reasonable, worth seeing. Excellent gift store and cafe.

If you want to know more about British Columbia this is the place. You will learn about its fauna and flora, about its people, places and influences. I was completely blown way by the room Our living languages ,where you can learn and listening to the indigenous dialects, and the reproduction of the early 19th century town. Quite impressive. Save at least 2h for the visit. I was there all morning. The museum is also home of the Imax cinema. It has a café, souvenir shops and toilets.

I haven't been here in about 30 years and it is much smaller than I remembered. The Johnathan Hunt House and Old Town displays were interesting and well presented. I thought there was a lot more indigenous art on display the last time I visited and was very disappointed. John Lennon's Rolls-Royce was a cool surprise.

Had a great visit with my partner and our toddler. The Music of Resistance exhibit is incredible - go if you can and learn about activism and music in BC and around the world. Lots of cool memorabilia. Unfortunately, the indigenous language exhibit is closed, which was a real let down - its our family's favorite.

Was expecting a lot more. The museum was a quick breeze through not alot to see, and what felt like a more steep price to what they have compared to other museums I’ve visited across Canada. It killed some time, but felt like a bit of a waste of a stop. Lots of protesting going on that perhaps has something to do with.

Sights & Landmarks
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, located in the capital city, is a stunning landmark with ornate neo-baroque architecture and captivating artwork. Built in 1893, it offers guided tours providing insight into Canada's workings. Visitors can admire the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee stained-glass windows as well as the Memorial Rotunda's beautifully painted walls and dome. The building overlooks a scenic harbor, making it a must-see for anyone interested in history and architecture.
The Legislative Assembly in Victoria is not just a historical building — it’s a complete experience. The architecture is absolutely stunning and makes for a very photogenic spot. Whether you're taking pictures from the lawn outside or walking around the building, every angle is picture-perfect. The lush green surroundings and the harbor backdrop just add to its beauty. Inside, we were pleasantly surprised to find activities for children too. There were interactive displays and learning corners that helped kids understand how the government works in a fun, engaging way. It was both educational and enjoyable for the whole family. The souvenir shop inside the building was another highlight. It had an amazing collection of locally made items, from elegant gifts to fun memorabilia. Everything felt carefully selected — not the usual touristy stuff. We ended up picking a few unique keepsakes to remember the visit. Overall, the Legislative Assembly is more than just a government building — it's a place where history, beauty, and learning come together. Definitely worth a visit for families, history lovers, and anyone who enjoys exploring iconic spots in Victoria.

Visiting the Parliament Buildings of British Columbia was an incredible experience. I joined one of the guided tours, and it was both engaging and highly informative. The guide did a fantastic job of explaining not only the history of the building and its architecture, but also providing insights into how our provincial legislation actually works. It was fascinating to stand in the very place where laws are debated and passed. What I really appreciated was how welcoming the experience felt. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions, take photos, and truly take in the atmosphere of this important institution. The tour flowed smoothly and struck a great balance between historical context and present-day relevance. The grounds themselves are stunning with beautiful architecture paired with well-kept gardens makes the Parliament a landmark worth visiting whether you’re a local or a tourist. The gift shop also had a thoughtful selection of locally inspired items, which made it easy to take a meaningful souvenir home. Overall, I would highly recommend a tour here to anyone visiting Victoria. It’s not only a chance to see a beautiful heritage building up close, but also to better understand the democratic process in British Columbia. A truly enriching and memorable visit.

Had a great time here.we did the tour on our own. Then ran into Kieth from global. And one thing led to another and he gave us a private tour of the building. He was such a wonderful man, great stories, funny. He showed us his office . Thanks again Keith! The grounds are beautiful the tour is full of great information. Lots to learn. A must stop when in Victoria

Went to see the parliamentary building. It opened in 1898 and had the same architect as the Empress. The style of the building is very nice and gives you a sense of the political importance of the building. It is free to visit. They offer free 40 minute guided tours or you can walk through yourself. I would recommend going if you are in the area. You can get through it pretty quick if you self guide.

We had a lovely evening exploring the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia with our family. The building’s grand architecture and beautifully maintained gardens made for a peaceful and scenic walk. A surprise highlight was a quick 15-minute horse-drawn wagon ride around the neighbourhood fun for the kids and a charming way to take in the surroundings. Though the building was closed for interior tours at that hour, the friendly staff and informative signage made the visit enjoyable. It’s a great spot for families looking to mix history, nature, and a bit of fun in a short visit. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in Victoria!

The Legislative Assembly of BC is a truly impressive structure, with an interesting history. A design competition was won in 1892 by a young (25) non-architect by the name of Francis M Raffenbury. With no prior architectural or construction experience, he brought the project in on time and under budget. Completed 1898 for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. This guaranteed his local success and he went on the create other iconic Victoria buildings including the famous Empress Hotel. Turns out, he did not live up to expectations and he "escaped" Victoria, BC for Bournemouth, England where in 1935 he was murdered. The Parliament Building has guided and self-guided tours throughout the day and highly recommend the guided tour so nothing is missed in this massive building. Spectacular gardens were closed the day we visited. Each room open to the public has something interesting to view: massive domes, native exhibits, symbols of state, gift shop. Definitely should add this on your itinerary.

You can spot the massive Canadian flag waving from afar — it’s practically a beacon calling you toward the Legislature grounds 🇨🇦✨ If you’d like to tour the interior, make sure to book in advance, and note that there’s no Mandarin tour available. But even without a reservation, the lawn outside is already worth the visit — soft grass, gentle breeze, and plenty of sunshine… the kind of simple moment that instantly resets your mood ☀️🌿

I really enjoyed visiting the BC Legislature! The architecture is breathtaking, and the atmosphere feels peaceful yet grand. Loved walking around the gardens and waterfront — definitely worth a stop if you’re in Victoria.

Fisherman's Wharf Park in Victoria, BC, is a delightful waterfront haven that promises an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages. As you stroll along the charming floating boardwalks, you'll be captivated by the vibrant atmosphere filled with colorful shops and eateries. This unique destination not only showcases picturesque houseboats but also offers a chance to spot playful seals and other marine life basking in their natural habitat.
What a cool place! Beautiful park for kids right nearby and good food/snacks for everyone. Make sure you take the time to walk all the docks to see the really cool floating houses on the water. I also recommend that you spend some time watching the boats and sea planes land and take off. Will definitely visit here again the next time I am in Victoria!
Maria P — Google review
Very busy but beautiful spot to explore. The float homes are all so cute but I feel terrible that the residents have to deal with such big crowds. We were in and out in after 1-1.5 hrs, great spot for lunch on the water.
Brittany G — Google review
Beautiful spot in Victoria. A most visit attraction. Particularly in the weekend sometimes there is a local band playing nice music. Many different restaurants to choose from. It's also the departure point from whale watching trips and you can also take there the harbour taxi.

Wonderful place to visit. We loved the food and the ice cream, went too late to see any shops, but the views were my favorite part. The brightly colored homes in a wide variety of types were fun to admire.

A wonderful location, adding vibrancy to the city of Victoria. This area offers a range of restaurants, cafes, and colorful spots, making it a place worth visiting for anyone exploring the city. A perfect blend of charm and convenience!

This is pretty. Unfortunately we were there on a rainy day. I like colors of shops and houses. I wonder what benefit private home owners get bit allowing visitors walk besides their homes? I do not think it is fun to live there were you would be on the public eyes all the time. I liked seeing houses, shops and water taxes, a pretty picture. We had fish and fries and I did not enjoy fish at all. It was fish with very bland batter and was not tasty at all atheist for me. Overall it is a mist visit place for sure.

Lovely place with colourful buildings on the water. In the place you can see restaurants, ice cream shop, galleries and houses. There are public washrooms in the place. Really nice atmosphere. Next to the place there is a big lawn and small playground. There is a pay parking lot and free parking spots on the street. Highly recommended to visit here.

Cider bar
Sea Cider Farm & Ciderhouse is a sought-after wedding venue in Greater Victoria, offering a rural yet modern and polished atmosphere. They provide customizable wedding packages with catering by renowned companies like Truffles Catering and craft beverages from Sea Cider themselves. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a variety of cider flavors at the barn-like tasting room in Saanichton. The farm also offers tours as part of Canadian Craft Tours where guests can visit several libation venues on the Saanich Peninsula.
Sea Cider is a beautiful backdrop for rustic weddings on southern Vancouver Island. I've been photographing there for many years and every event is cozy and beautiful. The forest ceremony site is a favourite for weddings and photos and the flow from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception is organic with the outdoor pad for cocktail hour and cider tasting, and the new event pavilion which is dedicated to event bookings. It's a clean slate that can be kept minimal or fancied up with draped linens, florals, etc. The venue offers long wooden tables and metal chairs and you can also bring your own if you see fit. The cider is tasty too and the grounds are perfect for guests to walk around between events. Highly recommend for small to medium sized weddings or events.
Heather P — Google review
Great experience at the cider farm They say all of their apples are organic, which is very important for us. We picked few ciders to go, Im sure you will find something that you will like as their cider menu is quite big. Definitely a stop when exploring local wineries
Tim U — Google review
Worth going a bit out of your way to seek out Sea Cider. So many interesting and unusual cider varieties; we had a Long Flight (6) of Canadian Invasion which was a fun ride. Great patio, lots of food on offer, and even a great gift shop with all of their ciders for purchase.
Munro S — Google review
It was truly an excellent experience! My fiancée and I visited for the first time and ordered two long flights and a pulled pork flatbread. There were so many kinds of cider that it was hard for us to choose, but the male staff member(sorry, I don’t know his name🥲) kindly explained everything in detail. We were very satisfied and really enjoyed our time there! Highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience unique and diverse ciders!
David L — Google review
A happy accident brought us here. We were off to pick up guests at the airport but their flight was delayed. We decided to stop at Sea Cider as we went north on the hwy. We lucked out and they had room. Each of us (3) got out one cider flight. And we shared two flatbreads. The ciders are outstanding as are the flatbreads. The dining area is outside with plenty of shade. The views are glorious and we can’t wait to return. Definitely a must do.
Merry K — Google review
Hostess was able to change our table to a much nicer one on the deck, all of us for different flights and we tasted more than 20 ciders! Flatbreads Amazing to go with them. Amazing variety and we came away with 7 bottles between the 4 of us. Will definitely be back, sorry it took me 20 years for my first visit.
Robin G — Google review
This was a surprise spot for GF food. It's impressive that everything on the menu is GF. The artichoke and Asiago dip is a must-try. The tasting flight experience is also a must. Cider is a bit overpriced, in my opinion, but I respect that the apples are not sprayed with pesticides (that’s what the writers told us). The service was excellent!
Jul U — Google review
Gorgeous ocean views and orchard setting make this such a special spot. The cider flights were delicious, and the flatbreads and baked Brie were equally yummy. Service was fantastic from start to finish. Overall, a delightful place and absolutely worth the visit!

The Japanese Memorial Gardens on Mayne Island is a serene and beautiful spot. The peaceful atmosphere, well-maintained paths, and stunning flora create a perfect escape from everyday life. Highly recommended for a tranquil stroll or a moment of reflection.

Small Japanese style garden, that seems operating by volunteers in memory of first Japanese settlers in Mayne island There is not any water left during the time of our visit but still you can enjoy the peace and beauty of here.
Naser — Google review
Beautiful place to go year round but especially in the fall and around Christmas when they have holiday lights set up. Anyone who visits Mayne Island or should visit simply to spend a day at the park and gardens. A huge thanks must be given to all the donors and volunteers who made it possible. It is amazing that the community has chosen to honor the Japanese families that so wrongly were forced from their homes and I to camps during WW2. A dark time in Canadian history.

These gardens are beautiful. Very peaceful and serene with a stream and pond providing water to the lush plant life that has been planted in the area. Very cool historical information with a Japanese kiln and a bell that has awesome overtones. Props to “The Gardener” who spent tons and tons of time on this amazing garden.

This 1307-acre park in the southern Gulf Islands is a must-go for anyone interested in outdoor activities like camping, fishing, birdwatching, swimming, kayaking and scuba diving. The park also has an interesting history with First Nations people who used to live there.
Love this park! The park itself has many walk-in campsites, it does get busy in the summer but when we were walking around in late April/early May, it was fairly quiet. There are many trails to explore and a heritage farm area to look at as well. Gorgeous setting by the ocean, definitely a sight to see in Salt Spring for sure!

Beautiful park with numerous walking trails. Interesting to read about the history and homesteading. On a beautiful summer day there was continuous pleasure craft boats passing by to enjoy.
David G — Google review
Beautiful camping spot located oceanside. There are a few campsites that require reservations, but the majority of them are first come, first serve. All campsites are a good 100 meters from the parking lot, so be prepared to lug your equipment. There are two wheel barrows so try to snag one to make it easier. Put toilets and potable water available.
Frank C — Google review
Camped here at the end of August, and despite the heavy rain on our first night, we had a wonderful experience! The views were fantastic and the campground was busy, yet peaceful. There is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the actual tenting area, but the wheel barrows supplied made it convenient to carry supplies.

The sights, the sounds and the smells are unforgettable. A few seals spotted along the way too. Easy hike. Plenty of parking, trails are easy hiking ability. Lots of picnic tables spread throughout the park. A highly recommended stop on a trip to salt spring island.

Ruckle Park is a beautiful destination with endless trails with lots of lookouts and small beaches along its coastal line. There is a heritage farm and It has a large camp ground overlooking the ocean with areas for large groups and fire pits. There are no showers, but the outhouses are clean and there is access to fresh water. It is dog and child friendly. There isn't a playground, but there are many outdoor activities that can be created in its beautiful wilderness. I live here on Salt Spring Island now, but I have camped there before I moved here and found the campground to be clean, and safe.
Jennifer — Google review
Beautiful park with lots of wildlife– we saw a pod of three orcas and a momma deer with her fawn on the first night. The park operators were all extremely helpful and understanding, and the campers were friendly and respectful as well... exempt a select few individuals when the crowds started pouring in for the long weekend. The walk-in aspect of the park deters motorhomes, RVs, bus-sized trailers and their generators, which makes for a nicer camping experience. Wheelbarrows are provided at the parking lot to help campers lug their stuff to and from their campsites. There are a lot of hikes in the campground and a lack of heavily gravelled paths (which I like) and due to its close proximity to the town you can stay for a long time and regularly pick up supplies. I love how accessible this campground is for campers with small cars as it can be hard to find good quiet spots that can be accessed without an all-terrain vehicle. Remember to clean up after yourself and be respectful of the animals who's habitat we share when we camp in these wonderful places.
Bronwyn K — Google review
We did the loop. It's about 8KM. Trail by the water is nice. Fresh air, great views! We saw some farm animals, cows, bulls, turkey, sheep, etc. But wouldn't recommend the loop if you like ocean more than the forest. Camping site is by the water. Amazing!

The gardens offer a leisurely and family-friendly stroll suitable for all ages, including grandparents and parents with strollers. Additionally, visitors can enjoy seasonal activities such as ice-skating in winter.
experience and an absolute must-visit when you’re in Victoria. Just a short drive from downtown, the gardens are a breathtaking showcase of color, design, and nature’s beauty. Every section — from the Sunken Garden to the Rose Garden and Japanese Garden — feels like stepping into a new world, each one more stunning than the last. What makes it special is the harmony between the landscaping and the natural surroundings. It doesn’t feel overdone — everything is carefully crafted yet respectful of the environment. You can sense the love and care that has gone into maintaining it for over a century. The walking paths are easy to follow, making it enjoyable for all ages. We especially loved how different viewpoints offer fresh perspectives of the same gardens. Depending on the season, the floral displays change, so it’s a place you could return to again and again. Pro tip: If you visit in the evening during summer, the illuminated gardens and fireworks shows add a whole new layer of magic.
Manik G — Google review
Beautiful flowers even though we visited end of season. They had a wide variety of flowers/plants from different regions- Mediterranean garden, Japanese Garden etc. They had many roses of different colours and flowers I’ve never seen before! It was beautiful! The garden was smaller than I thought- people recommended 3 hours for the gardens but we covered it within 1.5 hours. Limited dining options with only one cafe but the food and coffee were good!
Esther C — Google review
If you haven’t been to Butchart Gardens, don’t even claim you’ve been to Vancouver Island! The moment you step into the Sunken Garden, jaws drop all around 🤩😍🤩 It’s hard to imagine this was once a quarry — now layers of greenery and blooming flowers create a fairytale-like scene. Beyond the iconic Sunken Garden, I especially loved: • 🇮🇹 Italian Garden – elegant symmetrical fountains and charming water-side pathways. • 🇯🇵 Japanese Garden – flowing water, stone bridges, and soft moss create a serene, poetic atmosphere. In summer, the gardens stay open later into the evening. On Saturdays, there are fireworks 🎆, and on Sundays, live music 🎶 adds a magical touch. It’s like a paradise for slow living: couples strolling hand-in-hand, seniors walking their dogs, everyone moving at their own gentle pace. Sometimes, the best version of life is simply right in front of you. 🌸🧺✨

If I’m being honest, I wasn’t too keen on visiting The Butchart Gardens at first as we had a long journey ahead after leaving Victoria, but my partner insisted, and I’m so glad we went. What an absolutely stunning place! We arrived right as it opened, so it was peaceful and not too busy, giving us time to wander through the different areas - the Sunken Garden, Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, and more - each one beautifully designed and full of charm. Despite visiting in early October, there were still so many blooms, and the colours were starting to turn lovely shades of autumn. Definitely worth the visit!
Maxim S — Google review
We visited Victoria specifically to see Butchart Gardens and it was amazing! Go early to avoid what will be crowds. Take time to just enjoy as it’s hard to not keep taking photos and selfies given the views but you’re surrounded by nature’s beauty so take the time to breathe, stop and enjoy. A tip is to take your photos early and then, walk around your favorite areas a second time to just enjoy and relax. Fun gift shop for souvenirs and cafe to grab a bite and coffee. Give yourself at least 2 plus hours. There are tours that will take you from downtown but we took an uber as knew we wanted to spend more time. About a 30 plus minute drive. I would grab breakfast before you go.

The gardens were spectacular, even in fall! We were with a tour group and had 1.5 hours there, and it wasn't enough. The gift shop was fun, with a lot of interesting items. The cafe was also nice, with a lovely fireplace to sit in front of at the end.

The Japanese Garden and Rose Garden are especially stunning, offering so many perfect photo spots. It’s a place where you can slow down, take in the fresh air, and just enjoy nature at its best. Whether you’re walking with family, friends, or on your own, the gardens leave you feeling refreshed and inspired. Truly unforgettable!

A Whimsical Floral Escape! An absolute highlight of our summer! In August, The Butchart Gardens transforms into a dizzying, delightful wonderland. We visited with my son and my boyfriend's family, and it truly felt like tumbling into a secret fairy tale. The Sunken Garden is a jaw-dropping spectacle of color—so vast and perfectly arranged, you expect a gnome to pop out and give gardening tips. The Rose Garden was intoxicatingly fragrant and the perfect spot for the family to stop and just breathe. Best part? The Gelato in the Italian Garden. It's the perfect reward for little legs (and big ones!) after exploring the floral kingdom. Tip for families: Don't miss the Rose Carousel! It’s the sweetest stop for the kids. Yes, it was busy (hello, August!), but the sheer beauty of the place made the crowds melt away. A magical day for a blended family adventure!

Salt Spring Island Cheese Co. is a family-owned cheese shop that has been making and selling handmade goat and sheep cheeses since 1996. Their specialty lies in chevres, but they also produce feta cheeses, surface-ripened cheeses, and more. Visitors can enjoy a unique tasting experience with delicious artisan goat cheeses hand-packaged into flavorful treats.
It's a very interesting place. The goat cheese is delicious, and the small outdoor stalls are seasonal. When we visited, we got to try some gelato. Besides that, the little goats there are also very cute.

Salt Spring Island Cheese is an absolute gem. Seriously, the cheese here is to die for. Every bite is rich, creamy, and full of flavor. Whether you’re into soft, spreadable cheeses or firmer styles, you’ll find something here that totally hits the spot. The setting is equally lovely. The place is beautifully kept, with a peaceful, charming atmosphere that makes you want to linger. It’s the kind of spot that feels like a little slice of heaven tucked into Salt Spring. The only slight letdown is that the adorable goats roaming around aren’t actually the ones making the cheese; they’re just there for show. A staff member casually mentioned that, and while it doesn’t take away from the experience or the quality of the cheese, it does kind of poke a hole in the idyllic farm-to-cheese fantasy. Catch 22 the goats are actually in the mainland and the milk is shipped in Salt Spring and processed there. Still, 100% worth a visit and a taste. Or ten.

Excellent fresh goat cheese, and free visits to see the goats and chickens and some viewing windows of the cheese factory. Really good gelato as well, and the store sells lots of other locally made products, such as tea, jam, and art from Salt Spring Island!

not only was the cheese superb (we bought 8), the jams we bought with it paired perfectly. highly recommend the basil (if you like a more mild flavour), the salmon (most popular), hot chilli (if you can handle the heat, and tapenade (if you like olives). but the BEST part was the goats and sheep (and chickens but they don’t do much. they were soooo friendly to the public and demanded pets! love love them. 100% would come back just for the pets.

I visited Salt Spring Island Cheese as part of the Salt Spring Island Hop On Hop Off Tour. For those seeking the finest cheese in British Columbia, this farm unquestionably stands out as a top contender. You can’t come to salt spring and not go to Salt Spring Island Cheese. This cheese is top-notch! As good as cheese gets. As we stepped through the door of the cheese farm shop, a wave of rich, comforting aroma enveloped me, instantly transporting me to a world of cheese heaven. The warmth and scent of aged cheeses filled the air! It was a moment of pure bliss, where the promise of savory delights danced tantalizingly in the air, inviting us to indulge in the farm's finest creations. The selection of cheeses was out of this world. Absolutely a go to world class cheese shop. This place is a cheese lover's heaven! Their cheeses are impressive—creamy, flavourful, and clearly made with care. You can taste the difference that small-batch craftsmanship makes. This place is the GOAT for their goat gelato! This goat gelato is a win and is worth the trip alone! It’s the smoothest, creamiest, most decadent, gelato! Their pizza was perfectly baked, with a crispy crust and a flavorful topping that made every bite a delight. The quality here is exceptional and you can taste the authenticity in every bite. The pizza was fresh, had flavorful toppings, and the perfect crust! The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable, which added to the charm of the visit. The cheese melts in your mouth, fills the palate and leaves you with lingering notes of cream and butter. The culinary offerings are a cheese lover's dream come true, showcasing a diverse range of flavors and textures. From creamy and mild varieties to more robust and tangy options, there's a goat cheese to suit every palate. The dedication to quality and the authentic flavors of their cheese make it a gastronomic delight that leaves a lasting impression. As visitors stroll through the farm, they can interact with the friendly goats, which adds an interactive element to the outing. Whether you're a cheese enthusiast, a family seeking a memorable day out, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of farm life, this gem of a place with its abundance of adorable goats and delectable goat cheese offerings promises an unforgettable experience that will warm your heart and tantalize your taste buds. Well worth going out of your way for, and a MUST GO for any cheese enthusiast! I wanted to repeat the whole visit as soon as we finished.

It wasn't busy when we visited, and they had a great setup for tasting before you purchase. I was able to try a few different kinds of cheese and found one I liked. They also carry spreads and jams produced on the island. I bought a cheese with chili and a mango spread—these two combinations go really well together, and my family enjoyed them. It's a cool spot to check out if you're visiting the island.

Dolphin & Whale Watching
Ocean Ecoventures Whale Watching offers an unforgettable wildlife experience on North Vancouver Island. The area is known for prime whale watching, with orcas and humpbacks being common sights from May to October. Visitors can also enjoy bear-sighting in the dense forests and explore the backcountry on multi-day treks. Additionally, there are opportunities to view paintings by renowned artists and visit the Cowichan Estuary Nature Centre for family-friendly marine activities.
Loved this company 8 years ago and just as much last week when we returned especially to go whale watching again with Ocean Ecoventures. We took one morning trip and one sunset trip; both were superb. The new boat, Prowler, was super-comfortable, with great visibility. Our captains, Taz and Jane, were highly competent, affable and passionate naturalists who maximized our viewing experience without disrespecting the wildlife. If we didn't live so far away (East coast) , we'd be solid regular customers. Photos are just a few quick phone shots.

I thoroughly enjoyed this excursion. Not only did we see 2 types of whales and many sea lions but Captain Kate was extremely knowledgeable. I asked a lot of questions, especially about the killer whales, and she answered every one of them without hesitation. She was concerned about our comfort and went out of her way to make this a great experience, which it was. The entire staff was friendly and accommodating. I highly recommend this company and this tour.

Super nice and enthusiastic staff. They care in all belongs and want to provide you the best experience possible. Highly recommended. We went with this whale watching company as they seemed to be the best around. All the planning befor the trip was well done and without any issues. On the day of the tour there were some issues which postponed our start. During all this we were informed about updates to know what was going on. And also offered refund/reschedule if desired. The tour started nicely with some wildlife around. On the sea the weather had changed and it was quite wavey. It seemed that this also had effect on the whales as not wanted to show. We then took an extra long way back to hope for any sightings. Sadly we were not lucky. With the wind we were also hit by a lot spray so we were soaking wet in the end. Glad the provided suits took most of it. Our guide was also not happy with how it went and offered the voucher to try again whenever we wanted. We were able to schedule for the next day and the reserved a spot for us. This day the weather and water were near perfect and the experience so much better. On top of that we were able to encounter Orcas. But not some of the known groups but rather a pond of northern resident Orcas from Alaska! Even for our guides this was a super rare sight. We were able to cruise along next to the Orcas for 2 hours while enjoying them be playful and getting a lot of facts about them. As an extra treat were even able to hear their underwater sounds! And on way back we were even lucky to encounter a humpback whale. Thank you for that unforgetable memory!

I absolutely love this company! I’d give them a hundred star review if I could!! It’s a family owned company with a personal feel. From EJ in the office to Captains Simon, Tasli, Jane, Kate and Gary - everyone is so friendly and very professional. They love whales, are very knowledgeable and respectful of the animals on the water. All of the captains are excellent. I’ve been out with a few other companies in the past but now I won’t go whale watching with any other company on south/central Vancouver Island. I can’t wait to come back next year for more adventures on the water. I have no hesitation in recommending them.

My wife and I went on two whale watching tours with Ocean Ecoventures Whale Watching on September 3rd. One in the morning and one at sunset. Captain Tasli was very friendly and helpful on both tours. She really did her best to find the whales and give us a wonderful experience. She really succeeded. On the morning tour we saw our first humpback whales in our lives and were able to take some great photos of them. We also saw sea lions, seals and lots of seabirds. On the sunset tour we had perfect lighting conditions and Tasli went a long way to take us to the orcas. We also saw our first orcas ever. It was so great. I think there were several groups of orcas together, at least 20 or 25. There was even Chainsaw there, whom I recognized straight away. I had only seen him on Facebook before. The orcas were very active and we were able to take beautiful photos. An absolutely fantastic result, great tour, great Tasli. We also saw humpback whales on the second tour. It was a pleasure.

We had an amazing experience. The captain collaborated with others in the area to maximize our chances of spotting whales, which we did. While we were traveling from one area to another, or waiting for whale reports to come in, we were treated to views of other marine and avian wildlife, including seals, sea lions, and bald eagles. We highly recommend tours with this company.
Jessica W — Google review
Overall we were really happy with the experience! We saw humpback whales and orcas, as well as a bunch of large sea lions. Gary was absolutely amazing and provided so much information and education on the whales and happy to answer any questions. It was so great to have the tour provided by someone so passionate about the animals and the ocean. If I could make one suggestion it would be to suggest customers bring goggles or sunglasses to shelter eyes from the wind as we ended up travelling on cool waters for an hour to get to our viewing location. If people aren't familiar with travelling by boat they might not think of this (hi, it's me! Lol). My eyes were cold and watering for the hour trip and back. Another suggestion would be to provide goggles for passengers for the boat ride out. Other than that, we had a great experience and highly recommend!
Monica A — Google review
Our goal (hope) was to see an orca and our zodiac driver/guide/marine biologist went to great lengths to make this a reality for us - exceeding our expectations in the process. The zodiac was extremely comfortable - unlike any that we have experienced in the past! We were able to zip though the water to reach locations with confirmed orca sightings. Our guide's extensive knowledge of the local orca families and their behaviours was both interesting and important in that she was as equipped as possible to follow them safely while providing us all with the best views possible. Along the way, she stopped the boat to allow us to enjoy the experience of 100's of salmon leaping from the water all around us and also to enjoy watching some sea lions and seals. As it turned out, we saw 2 pods of orcas including several breaching orcas - which was breath-taking!

Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
Kinsol Trestle is a significant historical landmark, known for being one of the tallest train trestles in the world. It's currently used for activities like biking, cycling and horseback riding. The main pathway leading to it is easily accessible and even. The bridge itself has strong rails and is in good condition with an excellent view that visitors can enjoy peacefully. Beyond it are winding trails along rapids through forests where you'll find a cute little waterfall if you explore side trails.
Impressive and historic trestle bridge set in beautiful forest surroundings. The trail leading to it is scenic and mostly easy to walk, with some spots offering great views of the surrounding valley. Perfect for photos, nature walks, and a peaceful outdoor adventure. A must-visit if you’re exploring the area near Duncan.

If you would like a combo activity of hiking and attraction this is it! The trails below are a good mini workout in spots right along the Koksilah river. Just beautiful. And the trestle is immense and a must see. Great views and a easy flat walk to the trestle. Enjoy❤️
Charlene H — Google review
Went to Kinsol Trestle on a foggy afternoon and honestly felt like I’d stepped into a fantasy movie. The fog was light enough to see the bridge but heavy enough to make me wonder if I’d spot a wizard or a moose with main-character energy. The place looked straight out of a postcard someone forgot to add color to—but in the best way. The walk was easy, the air smelled amazing, and my phone camera worked overtime trying to capture the “mystical forest” vibe. If you ever wanted to feel dramatic while just walking, this is your spot.
Bhargav K — Google review
Great place to visit. Make sure you bring water. We went on a really hot day and ran out of water. It's a 20 minute walk from the parking lot to the Trestle. Beautiful walk with really tall trees.
Dragos N — Google review
An absolutely amazing bridge and hike- totally worth seeing! Bring your high quality camera for this one- because I couldn’t even fit the whole bridge in my camera lens! Loved learning about the history and having a lovely hiking path to explore!
Joyna H — Google review
Google Maos directions go past the parking lot so I did have to turn around when I realized I had just gone a bit too far. Nice walk for the lot to the trestle. Amazing view from the bridge and nice trails on the far side that go under the bridge.

The Chemainus Theatre Festival is a professional theatre that offers year-round performances, along with a dining room and art gallery. In addition to the cultural experience, visitors can also explore the dining scene in Chemainus, with various restaurants offering Canadian cuisine, Thai food, Korean dishes, and more. The area of Chemainus, Saltair, and Crofton provides great options for enjoying meals while soaking up the summer sunshine on their patios.
I purchase 3 shows every year and am never disappointed. The buffet always has excellent choices. The theatre seating is comfortable and I get premium seating, although I doubt there is a bad seat in the house. The gift shop never ceases to amaze me with the beautiful, top quality items. Definitely 5 stars!
Joyce C — Google review
I've only been to the theatre twice, but I can say that this is a small but beautiful theatre, meant for more intimate shows where audience interaction is intended. While waiting to enter, there is a small park outside with a water feature.

What an absolute gem we have right here on Vancouver Island! The Chemainus Theatre continues to impress, and our recent afternoon there was no exception. We started with lunch at the Playbill Dining Room buffet—everything was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. The service was warm and attentive, adding to the overall experience. Then came the show, and it was simply outstanding. The incredible singing talent and energy of the performers brought the entire production to life. Their voices, stage presence, and commitment to every moment were truly remarkable. It is hard to believe we have access to this level of talent so close to home. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing venue on Vancouver Island, offering a complete experience that blends wonderful dining with world-class theatre. If you have not been, do yourself a favour and go—it is a gift to have this in our own backyard.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An Absolute Holiday Delight! I just saw Elf at the Chemainus Theatre and I am still buzzing with Christmas cheer! The entire production was pure magic from start to finish. The actor who played Buddy the Elf absolutely smashed it out of the park—his energy, comedic timing, and heart were off-the-charts fantastic. He lit up the stage every second he was on it! The whole cast was phenomenal: vibrant, charismatic, and incredibly talented. Every musical number burst with life, and the humor landed perfectly. You could feel the joy and hard work poured into every scene. The set, costumes, music, choreography—everything was crafted with so much care. It’s truly refreshing and exhilarating to experience live theatre done at such a high level. Chemainus Theatre has delivered a holiday production that’s both hilarious and heartwarming, and it reminds you exactly why live performances are so special. If you’re looking for something festive, uplifting, and unforgettable—GO SEE THIS SHOW! 🎄✨

Always heard good things about this theatre and came to see for ourselves. Everything was perfect. Ticket arrangements, hotel partnerships, the food was superb. The shows entertainment, story and singing, were a cut above. Very comfortable theatre, good views and good seats, with a nice atmosphere. Great front of house staff, buffet dinner, gift shop, good parking and understand season tickets are available. Respecting the requests for no picture taking of stage, or performance in the theatre. Would definitely return.

Amazing opening night for Home to Roost. We laughed, had a tear and felt warmhearted by this beautiful performance. Highly recommend you see this play during its short run with few tickets left.

We attended the Home to Roost production. What a wonderful venue! Every seat has a view. The theatre has a menu prior to show, this needs to be reserved. The staff and volunteers make the place very comfortable and friendly at the same time feeling professional. Looking forward to our next play. 🎭

Attended the Footloose production. Cast were all super strong at acting, dancing, and singing. Far surpassed expectations. The theatre has a lovely bar upstairs to grab a drink at intermission and a gift shop and ice cream bar on the main floor. We didn’t go to the pre-dinner buffet but the audience members beside us did and were happy with it.

If you're looking for a charming getaway, the small town of Chemainus is a must-visit, especially for its stunning Wall Murals. Once primarily a lumber town, it has transformed into a vibrant tourist destination over the past 40 years. The murals that adorn the streets tell captivating stories of the town's history and culture. Strolling through downtown, you can admire these artistic masterpieces while exploring local shops and eateries.
Literally the city of murals (wall arts). Very picturesque town and the murals show the history of town from different times. Lovely place to stop by and enjoy walking around the town centre! Highly recommend! 5/5

A small town turned from the lumber to the tourism industry. Documented in the film "The Little Town That Did", Chemainus started with a few wall murals over 40 years ago to become the city of murals. A great way to spend the day is wandering along each of the downtown area streets, taking in the murals, stopping at the stores and visiting local eateries. I have done this several times in the past, bring in out of towners.

Drumbeg Provincial Park, located near Nanaimo on Gabriola Island, boasts prehistoric petroglyph rock carvings that can be found along the South Road. The park offers a range of amenities including trails, outhouses, benches for relaxation, and rope swings. Visitors can explore forested trails and enjoy sunny bluffs overlooking sandstone beaches with deeply cut bays for swimming.
To me, this is the most beautiful spot on Gabriola Island. The water was clean and clear, with no seaweed, and the large rock plates were perfect for resting. The water wasn’t too deep, which was ideal. I loved and enjoyed every moment here. There's also a short trail around the meadow to explore.

Found this relatively isolated area of Gabriola Island which looks stunning with no one there when we arrived. Really nice views and we found a jellyfish washed up ashore which was pretty cool.

Large sandrock area was really fun to explore. Easy 1.6k hike was coastal/ forest walk. Washroom and picnic area nearby.

Beautiful day at a beautiful beach. The 13-year-old said being here was a once in a lifetime experience and all of us had a lovely time. Gabriola Island is a lovely place to visit. We rented a house from a family who were away on their own vacation and it was a wonderful week.

With a scarcity of visitors, this destination showcases the marvels of the natural world, a true masterpiece crafted by the forces of nature itself. Here, one can bask in the beauty of the undulating ocean waves and marvel at the intricate caves that have been meticulously carved over time by the relentless ebb and flow of the sea. The serenity of the surroundings, coupled with the raw power of the elements, creates a harmonious symphony of sights and sensations that captivate the soul and invite a deep appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.
Foodie V — Google review
Nice ocean front park, it’s a rocky beach, no sand, but there’s lots to see. You can find tiny crabs under the rocks, mussels and oysters are all over the place as well. The most amazing thing has to be the rocks, there’s some cool looking hollow rocks which I assume was carved out by the ocean for hundreds if not thousands of years. Anyway, great place to visit!
Ryan P — Google review
There is a lovely little trail through Garry Oaks, Arbutus, and Douglas Fir that follows the shoreline or you can walk down the shore if the tide is out earlier in the day. There are multiple picnic tables available for use. The water is clear and very swimmable though we didn't have our swim suits handy..oh darn.

great windy park that i stopped to cook up some lunch. washrooms were in decent shape for november, but no lock on the men’s outhouse. 2 picnic tables and a few benches. not much parking, so it could easily get busy in the summer. one downside, locals again have there dogs off leash when signs require them to be on leash.

Newcastle Island, also known as Saysutshun, is a must-visit destination in Nanaimo. The island offers stunning beaches, nature trails, and open fields where visitors can spot deer, raccoons, squirrels, and sea birds. It's an 8 km hike around the island with the option to grab a meal at the cozy cafe near the dock. The well-groomed trails are perfect for hiking and offer great views of wildlife and sea life.
We had a wonderful time visiting Saysutshun Island! The docks are spacious and can accommodate several boats, making it easy for boaters to stop in and explore. This island is a fantastic destination for families—whether you're planning a day picnic or camping for several days. There are kayak and paddleboard rentals available, which make for a fun and active way to explore the water. The information booth is packed with helpful details about the island and its history. Everyone we met was incredibly friendly and helpful, which made our experience even better. There’s also a restaurant on-site offering delicious food options, including salmon burgers, fish and chips, and of course—ice cream! With stunning views, beautiful hiking trails, and plenty of places to swim or relax by the water, Saysutshun Island is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back!

Place was amazing, staff were very pleasant and it was a fun boat ride over about 8 mins each way! The views and nature was wonderful only went for a few days near the end of their service this season but it was 100% worth it only downside was some outhouse were not in best condition further out along hiking trails but thats completely understandable! I reccomend it for anyone who likes a little adventure be advised it is on foot only and camping gear is backpacked over.

First time out to this lovely Island. I should have gone sooner! Endless beautiful beaches, nature trails, and open fields. Lots of deer, racoons, squirrels, and sea birds everywhere. The rock formations on the beach are incredible! It's about an 8 km hike around, so pack a lunch, or grab something from the cozy little cafe at the campsite area right near the dock. There's trail maps along the way, and trails that go through the middle of the island, to make your hike shorter. The ferry ride to the island is about 10 minutes, from Maffeo Sutton Park, downtown Nanaimo. It's walk-on only. $15 per person. Well worth it! Looking forward to going over to this beautiful nature island again!

We love taking the ferry over and spending the day exploring. We brought friends over this time with our dogs and it is now a new place for them to frequent. There is lots of parking close to where the ferry leaves. We hiked along the trails which were well groomed and signed. There’s a couple of areas that are hard to locate such as the mine shaft etc. which could have better signage as you are going along. Lots of great views, wildlife and sea life to enjoy! Staff are all super friendly and there are lots of toilet facilities (outhouse) throughout the park. There is a small store/food area that sells shirts, ice cream etc. The fairy runs quite often in the summer, every half hour and takes up to 40 passengers. Later at night and during the off-season they sometimes run the smaller boat with only takes approximately 12. On low tide you can walk over to Protection Island and go for a bite to eat at the local pub.
Sheri L — Google review
Fantastic location to easily spend a whole day. Great views all around and so much wildlife. Come for a picknick, bike ride or anything you like by riding the ferry over (yes, you can bring your bike in board). Or even better, rent them from Jeff's Rentals on the island as he is an amazing person and the rates are very affordable. Paddle over to the dinghy dock pub for a bite to eat and a drink. You can even camp on this island. It's perfect.

Place is amazing!!! a Nanaimo hidden gem didn't know this place existed coming out there, was suggested to me staying at the Vancouver island residences went and checked it out for a day hike learned there was camping and came back and stayed for 5 days, it was during the week and the island was pretty empty, was tranquil, there was deer everywhere and they were pretty fearless they'd walk right through the campsites (raccoons in daylight too!) walking through the forest you felt like an ant walking through the grass most of the trees are enormous , had the beach to myself, saw purple starfish, the staff were great, and the burgers from the concession were pretty good. Plan to come back!!

Great place to go for a hike or kayak maybe both!!! lots of wildlife and great views! Be sure to give yourself lots of time to explore the whole island and if you plan to camp you'll want to make sure you secure a spot as they fill up fast. Bring lots of water and snacks and don't share with the racoons no matter how cute they seem.

BC Ferries Departure Bay Terminal

Ferry service
Transportation
Ferries
The BC Ferries Departure Bay Terminal in central Nanaimo provides services to the Vancouver Mainland and Sunshine Coast, while the Gabriola Ferry Terminal in south Nanaimo serves Gabriola Island of the Gulf Islands. Travelers commonly use BC Ferries to reach Vancouver Island, and some may even have the chance to stop at Nanaimo during a cruise. Visitors have praised efficient check-in, friendly staff, and punctual sailings at the terminal.
I travelled from Vancouver to the Island Victoria on the Ferry with my hire. I have to say I’ve never seen a more professionally run operation. I was an Australian on holidays and I could not believe how seamless the whole journey was from buying the ticket to onboarding and then disembarking. Incredibly efficient and organised. The food on board was great and a variety and all reasonably priced. The other thing I wanted to mention is how clean everything was. And some many options for seating. I loved being able to walk around and see all the different aspects. The staff were also very friendly. For a government run organisation it’s amazing and everyone seems to love their job and why wouldn’t they. If the Australian government ran something, it would be dirty overpriced and they would either be running over smaller boats or running aground. Oh ya and it would be expensive to use. Good on you Canada, well done you should all be proud of the image you are showing to the world.
Wayne O — Google review
Our experience was less than hoped for especially after the trip over was so great. Sailed on the 6/13 2:45 ship. The Somali woman at the ticket kiosk was unpleasant and unintelligible. The loading was delayed and we disembarked an hour late. The food service workers seemed understaffed and overwhelmed, and the food quality suffered for it. We arrived so late that we couldn’t dock because other ships were already there so we had another delay of about 40 minutes before we could finally drive off. I think maybe the B team was working or maybe it was because it was Friday the 13th. 🤷🏼‍♂️😑

BC ferries had become hell on earth since half of the world is trying to squash into our beautiful BC. Ferries used to be a treat to take, exciting with a feeling of freedom as you passed through the Georgia Straight and truly discovered all the little gems of islands. Now the ferries are hell on earth, trapping people on the island over summer months and catering to the world wide problem of over tourism. Borders around the world need to close down and people need to focus on creating beauty in their own communities. A classless, economically driven group of people have created “economics” at the expense of local communities and our earth. The institution of “tourism” has been as destructive as any pipeline, logger or miner, creating division and exhaustion in every once beautiful city globally. The ferries are meant to transport citizens and be a part of living, work and life. Instead they cater to the overpopulation of our once breath taking province.

Once you have your ticket, get ready for a fairly long walk if you are senior citizen or suffering from an injury you may want to seek a wheelchair or assistance to get you on the ferry. There are staircases and sloped ramps to navigate.
Sean D — Google review
BC Ferries as a whole is shockingly competent, arguably the only major transport system in the province that runs with any real efficiency. Sailings are (usually) on time, boarding is smooth, and the terminals don’t feel like a punishment. But among them, Departure Bay stands out. It’s better than Tsawwassen or Swartz Bay. And yes, they sell a proper croissant. Not just warmed-up pastry disappointment, but something you can eat without regret. It’s not flashy, but it works. Which, in BC, is saying a lot. Five stars, croissant included.
Le M — Google review
The company oversold tickets beyond their capacity. Despite arriving 26 minutes early with valid tickets, we still had to wait an additional two hours. Very disappointing and unprofessional.

Westwood Lake is one of the best places to enjoy nature in Nanaimo. The trails are well-maintained, the lake is great for swimming, and it’s a family-friendly spot all year round. Recently, the parking lot, washrooms, and shower facilities were remodeled, which makes the park even more comfortable and welcoming. Whether you come for a quick walk, a long hike, or a summer swim, this park has everything you need. Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike!

Super cute little city park and lake! A very upbeat, family friendly vibe. I did the 5.5/6km hike around the lake first and was done within an hour. Beginner level, as I saw parents and kids. There is a steep area to get to/from the bluffs but so worth the view! I went paddling after and it was calm enough to do yoga on my board, but the wind picked up and brought me to the underwater forest area, where I passed right by a bald eagle! 🦅 The water is warm enough for swimming, but it made me itchy after. You can tell this is a simulated/not naturally occurring beach/lake, given the sandbox feel, and old trees/stumps sticking out of the water even in deeper areas.
Lucy — Google review
In the changing room, on the door, there is a warning for swimmers that this lake has the parasite which cause the ‘swimmer’s itch’. And it takes 2-3 days to get better then there could be rashes. Just fyi if you’re planing to swim. It kinda disappointed us as we planned to swim at first. Other than that it’s a nice place, clean water

One of my favorite places! Has a 6k loop trail around the lake that is a fam fav ! Beautiful scenery, lush green trees/plants! It's pretty easy trail with a rewarding view of Mt Benson at the end. Bit of incline there but my 6 yr does it with pretty minimal whining haha so I'd say easy enough. Worth it either way. The lake is beautiful with clear and warm water , perfect for kayaking and has a decent sized swimming area . 😀 definitely a must in Nanaimo! 👍👌

Beautiful place for a walk around the lake. I'm not so sure about it as a swimming destination though as the water didn't look too clean in a few spots. I will definitely be bringing my kayak though!

Second Beach Trail

Nature & Parks
Hiking Trails
Hiking through coastal forest to reach a remote beach known for sea stacks, tide pools & eagles.
Worth the hike in and out which I would say is slightly challenging depending on your abilities. Bring water and layers just in case.

Camping here was amazing! (You do need to get a camping permit, but it's honestly fairly cheap. They provide bear cannisters if you need it.) During the night, it gets dark enough to see the stars, perfect for stargazing! I suggest packing light. Although the trail is less than a mile, it does get a bit steep closer to the beach. There is a toilet but it's hidden among the trees (definitely bring some TP or wetwipes!). Remember to pick up after yourselves (:

First time here, mid September 2023. Wonderful place to visit. There is a good size parking lot and an overflow lot just a quarter mile from that. The trail is an easy .8 mile hike from the parking lot with some steep stair steps towards the end. The beach is huge. I went there for Milky Way photography and was treated to my first time seeing bioluminescence. One of the most incredible things I've ever seen.

Easy trail, even in the dark

We loved second beach!!! The trail wasn't terrible getting down but was a challenge getting back up in parts. It was totally worth it though.
