The Iditarod Trail Headquarters, located in a log cabin, is a museum dedicated to the famous dog sled race known as The Iditarod. Since 1973, elite teams have raced on a 1,100-mile route from Anchorage to Nome every March. The museum features trophies, photos, and videos of dog sledding along with exhibits showcasing the race's history.
Very cool! Great museum with trophies and stories of the race over the years. The ride with Riley Dyche and the dogs was the highlight for sure… Amazing how much power he was getting out of eight frisky dogs! 😁
Taylor A — Google review
This was a great stop. They have a wonderful museum and you can see some of the trophies. There is also a movie that you can see. The dogs were not available since the weather was really rainy. They also have a nice gift shop.
Donna S — Google review
We stopped by today for the summer sled dog cart rides with Riley Dyche. The dogs were so sweet and it was a lot of fun watching them run. They got really excited when they saw the cart come out. This is a great activity if you’re in the area looking for something to do. There weren’t many people when we went so we didn’t have to wait long at all. We went into the gift shop and visitor’s center after the cart ride and had fun looking around. They even have a 30 minute video option if you have time to sit down and learn all about the Iditarod.
Kaylyn M — Google review
We were very excited to go there. We saw the dogs leave pulling a cart with a couple in it. They came back in less than 5 minutes. Short ride. In the mean time we asked if we could pet the dogs and the wander was: "If you're not going to get a ride you can't pet them" Fair bit rude and money driven. We headed to the sort of museum, and yeah you can find some artefacts. They play a 30 minute movie which you can buy in CD format. It is mainly a shop with souvenirs with a small room with seats for the video.
Karolina — Google review
Its a lovely place to interact with the huskies. The merch store is also great and the museum is great to get an understanding of the history. You can get a husky drawn sledge ride ( even in summer ).
Amit G — Google review
We went in June, and we got to go on a short ride with the dogs, mashed by Riley. We watched a video and were lucky to be there on the day they were signing up mushers for next year's race and met the reigning champion. The gift shop was great and we got a book with great information regarding the Iditarod.
Terri S — Google review
We learned about the Iditarod on our Princess cruise from Ryan Redington, the grandson of Joe Redington, and got to see two of his newest puppies. Very cool little museum showcasing the history of the race. The kids loved doing the ride on the dog sled and meeting all the dogs.
Stacy C — Google review
Nice free museum and gift shop. $10 dog sled rides are offered to support the dog team. Lots to see to learn the history of the Iditarod

The Alaska Live Steamers Museum is a unique attraction located near Lake Lucille Park in Wasilla. It features a miniature train track and village nestled in the forest, offering a 45-minute ride through miniature towns that replicate the Alaska Railroad. The attention to detail is impressive, making it an enjoyable experience for both children and adults who appreciate trains. Visitors are advised to arrive early and bring mosquito spray due to the aggressive bugs in the area.
Very unique attraction for children and adults alike - if you like trains, this is your place. It is not much of a traditional museum, rather a 45-minute ride on a miniature train through the Forrest with miniature towns and sites that mimic the Alaska Railroad. A lot of work and detail put into this attraction! Recommend arriving at opening time, and bring your mosquito spray - the bugs are aggressive. But fun will be had by all that ride.👍🏻
Marc G — Google review
What a blast. Took a baby. They provide infant carriers so babies can go too. And the bigger kids loved it. It was fun and they put a lot of work into it. I can't wait to do it again. The ride is actually really long. Like 45 minutes at least.
Sammi B — Google review
Giving 3 stars as I'm sure it's great! I appreciate that it's run by volunteers. We didn't have opportunity to visit as the gate was closed when we arrived at 12:30 pm. The website said it was open till 4 pm. Very disappointed that the website isn't updated with current opening times. I did call 3 times before we left Anchorage with the grandkids. It would have been nice if there was a recording with current open times.
Alicia S — Google review
An incredibly affordable and memorable experience! I've taken my kids a few times, and they absolutely love it. With their military discount, it only costs a total of $27 for me and my two daughters to ride. It's a one-hour-long scenic ride on a miniature train through tunnels and over bridges. The kids will remember this for the rest of their lives.
Michael G — Google review
Love it! So fun.... years ago. Now we can't seem to catch them open. We have driven from Anchorage several times when the site said Open, but they were closed, again. I recommend calling first, though we haven't been able to get an answer. Maybe closed for the year?
G S — Google review
Great treat for kids. It's a locally supported narrow gauge railway running trips for kids. The kids I saw were having s great time

Immerse yourself in the rich history of Wasilla by visiting the Wasilla Museum & Visitor Center. This museum offers a journey through time, from the Native Athabaskan roots to the mining boom and beyond. Explore interactive exhibits on dog mushing and gold mining, as well as a vast collection of artifacts and articles related to the area's history. The museum also features traveling exhibits, historic homes, and buildings that provide insight into local history.
This small little museum shows just how much the City of Wasilla cares about their scouts. Even though it’s a small museum the staff were absolutely delightful and helped so much when it came to recommendations.

The staff working was amazing (04/01/25). Greeted us at entry with a warm welcome. Provided my granddaughter with a scavenger hunt and prize at completion. Also provided her an arts and craft. Small vistor center with maps and brochures. Historical museum and gift shop. I would recommend

The Wasilla Elementary School is located by this museum. The School was built in 1917 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Check it out!
Cam K — Google review
Very nice, cozy museum and visitor center. When we were there, a friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable staff member was a wealth of information and generally just brightened our day with her happy energy. It was free when we attended, although our guide book said that it would be about $18 per family. The museums quite small, so may not be worth paying to see. The visitor center has plenty of information about wasilla and the larger area.
Wendy M — Google review
Small museum showcasing the history of Wasilla, in addition to travel material, and other old collections. Such as a calendar dated back to 1947! The staff were also very friendly.
Lindo K — Google review
We stopped by the Visitor Center because my daughter was in a zoom meeting and we had time to kill while she was in her meeting. We are glad we stopped by the center!! We met a Kelly who was so much fun to talk to! She gave us a ton of information and history of Alaska! The remaining of our day turned out ahhhmazing with the suggestions she gave us!! ❤️

Discover the essence of Wasilla's past and present at the Museum and Visitor Center. With vibrant local crafts, engaging Kids Days, and interactive exhibits, it's a must-visit for history buffs and families alike. Dive into the story of the community and its artisans in a fun, educational setting.

Took my kids ages 3,5,7,13 they all enjoyed it and so did I. The younger man that greeted us was friendly and interacted with the kids well. The tour guide is so full of knowledge of our local history. I highly encourage, if you haven't been there, go at least once. It's not because it's super exciting but just for a hint of where this town comes from.

Eklutna Historical Park, located just a 30-minute drive from downtown, is an ancient Athabaskan settlement that beautifully blends Native and Russian Orthodox cultures. The park features a stunning Russian Orthodox log church and a cemetery adorned with vibrant spirit houses. These colorful wooden boxes, built over graves to represent family names, reflect the unique combination of Athabascan tradition and influence from Russian Orthodox missionaries.
Really interesting grave markers. Little houses! Apparently, these are built to give the spirits a place to haunt for the first 40 days after death.
FairytaleFilmmaker — Google review
We stopped here in Eklutna will in Alaska. I've been here many time even when younger much younger. The place as aged and so have a lot of houses over the graves. The front grave sites have seen better days but keep walking through and you'll see newer houses. It's a great little historical sight just off the Glen Highway in Eklutna. It's free so that good but donate to help out, there is a collection station. Will I go back? Of course just don't know when.
Java B — Google review
visited early morning after a hike at thunderbird falls. we were the only living souls present. super cool place to stop, walk around, honor the dead. wish it was more taken care of, it was overgrown and a lot of the spirit houses were decaying. still beautiful and moving to witness.
Shiann W — Google review
Cool place to visit even just for a few minutes. Its interesting walking around seeing all the different grave covering constructions and memories to others loved ones.
Jared H — Google review
This is a really unusual and unique little place, initially it appears completely abandoned but there are some people still living in the area and a number of the graves are recent. It’s a quick excursion but it’s worth taking the time to visit if you happen to be in the area.
Conor S — Google review
We loved this tour. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the history of the Eastern Orthodox church. He obviously has a lot of pride in this church and cemetery. The spirit houses were something I had never heard of and his excitement transferred to us when he was talking about several of the houses in this cemetery. I would recommend this tour to anyone. We even brought of 6 year old granddaughter with us and she enjoyed the experience as well.
Kathy C — Google review
We mistakenly went to the "active" church instead of the historical one right beside, but the parishioners and priest inside had just finished services and were eager to talk so it worked out. Wish we could have stayed longer. I enjoyed learning about the church and the history. Super nice people! Be respectful of the spirit houses, as it is a cemetery, and do leave a donation in the box to help with upkeep. $5 a person is recommended.
Jana T — Google review
We stopped at the Eklutna Historical Park and were so glad we did. It’s a beautiful and peaceful spot with a rich cultural history. The colorful spirit houses make it a truly unique and thoughtful place to visit. Very easy to access — just a quick stop off the highway, but well worth the time. Highly recommend if you’re passing through the area.

Bearpaw River Brewing Company - Palmer Wasilla HWY Taproom

Brewery
Food & Drink
Bearpaw River Brewing Company - Palmer Wasilla HWY Taproom is a delightful spot for beer enthusiasts and food lovers alike. Upon entering, guests are greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere that emphasizes cleanliness and friendliness. Although there was a minor hiccup with the ticket order during one visit, the staff handled it graciously by offering complimentary cherry cola in a Bear Paw brew bottle as an apology.
This was my first time in any bear paw brewing and it was absolutely amazing! At first there was a little mistake with my ticket order that it never printed so I waited a bit longer then normal. BUT they were so nice and came right to me to inform me and apologize they then gave me a 32oz of their cherry cola in a bear paw brew bottle! The atmosphere is so clean and nice and warm. The pizza OH MAN the pizza is absolutely amazing this is my new pizza place nothing can beat that amazing hand made, brick stove FRESH topping like this. If you want pizza honestly don't go any where else!!!!!

Really good Pizza! Super nice staff. Quick service and a great all local beer list!
Scott G — Google review
Tried two pizzas, bacon mushroom and sausage potato. Pretty good quality toppings but the crust/bread of the pizza was very chewy, quite difficult to eat. Might have been because we got it to go and ate it semi cold. Looked delicious, would try again in store
Aislynn S — Google review
Great place to stop in and have a cold one or two or three..... Growler fills and cans n bottles to go. Great local brewery with very good tasty beer
Matt C — Google review
Love this place! Great beer and even better atmosphere. This place is small but the patrons are fun and the staff are great. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
Greg W — Google review
Quick stop at one of the many breweries in Alaska. As “beer travelers” America is an absolute paradise with almost every town having their own brewery. 😅 We were welcomed with a smile although we arrived 10 minutes before opening. 😁 We ordered our flights, sat down, socialized and simply had a great time. 👌🏼
Matthias K — Google review
The beer is okay, not my favorite but isn’t bad. The pizza is a bit pricey, and hard to chew. BUT the flavors are really good and if you want to try it for yourself I recommend the Greek pizza. The atmosphere is great and everyone is really friendly. They definitely prioritize cleanliness and quality.
Caitlyn S — Google review
Servers are SO NICE!! Absolutely welcoming and friendly, and patient as well. Helped me figure out what I prefer to drink. Not to mention, how WONDERFUL the pizza is!! I'm SOOOO picky about pizza, and this is one of the best places to get some!! Definitely will be returning. Wonderful atmosphere 🥹❤️

Outdoor Activities
Nestled within the Chugach State Park, Eagle River Nature Center is a haven for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Originally established by volunteers in the original Visitors Center, this center offers educational outdoor recreational opportunities and promotes environmental conservation. The picturesque mountain setting is home to a network of hiking trails that lead through stunning landscapes. Just a short drive from Anchorage, visitors can enjoy wildlife viewing and educational programs about the local flora and fauna.
What a fantastic place to find on vacation! We were just looking for a scenic lookout to see the mountains and the road ended into the nature center so we decided to have a look around. The staff inside the center were all super-friendly and took the time to listen to our stories and tell their own and recommended a trail based on what we told them. A quarter mile up the trail from the nature center we came to an overlook looking over the river/marsh and there was a huge bull moose in the water munching away on whatever it could dredge up from the water. The scenery is beautiful (even without the moose). Picturesque mountains, a beaver dam, and lush forests made our hike incredible. Everything was impeccably maintained; the nature center, both boardwalks we encountered, and the trails were all perfect. And then, to top it off, our son accidentally left his favorite sweatshirt behind on one of the boardwalks when we continued our hike. We left and didn't notice it was gone. We came back 4 hours later hoping someone turned it in at the nature center. No one had so I took a quick re-hike to retrace our steps. The sweatshirt was exactly where he had left it; no one had touched it the whole time we were gone. Super-cool place and great views. Would hike again!

What an absolutely beautiful little Nature Center. Enjoy the manicure Trail. At the time of our visit the longer path was closed due to bear activity and the Salmon Run. The Beaver Pond The Overlook. The interesting Visitor Center made for a great visit. They have a few different hiking trails you can walk. The trails and very well marked making planing your hike a breeze. We really enjoyed our visit to the Eagle River Nature Center

Visitors - add this to your list! Beautiful and serene. The trails are easy to navigate as signs are clearly marked. Locals - this is a wonderful place to take a break and enjoy the quiet environment. *images are late September

I love this nature center! It’s a great place to walk your dog and bask in the sun while enjoying some fresh air and great views. The trails are constantly updated and maintained.
Savannah C — Google review
This place is a great destination for outdoor lovers, wildlife viewers, adventure seekers, hikers, campers, or even dog mushers. Small fee to park or you can buy the annual pass. Small animal exhibit inside with some souvenirs and snacks. Take the trails that lead you into the nature center but bring bear bells, bear spray, and a 10mm or higher. During the salmon runs you can run into brown bears. Be sure to check the recent bear activity signs before heading in. They update the signs for trail closures as well. The staff love their jobs and are very friendly. There are tons of programs for kids and lots of events here. Don’t miss out!
Michael — Google review
Eagle River Nature Center was a fun hike. We wanted to do Albert Loop and Rodak Trail but these were closed because of the Salmon and Bear. The one trail open was Iditarod which led down to Rapids Campsite and a peek at the water. At this point there is a small hidden path up to a bench and lookout with 360 degree view.
Jon H — Google review
The Eagle River Nature Center is an amazing spot to visit outside Anchorage. It was our first proper stop on a long road trip across the state and what an incredible introduction to the beauty of Alaska! We arrived shortly before opening but the trails are still accessible and especially quiet at the time in the morning. As we were leaving, we received some very helpful advice from the couple at the welcome desk (including some further hiking suggestions). Highly recommended as a place to go exploring in the outdoors!

Hiking Trails
This is a beautiful place to walk. It’s enjoyable to watch spring unfold with melt water causing flooding under the boardwalk. The arrival of migratory birds adds another dimension to this beautifully crafted walkway.
Jim G — Google review
Good walk for families! Less than a mile (.8) out and back trail. The beginning of the board walk isn't sturdy but the rest was ok. (See video of it on our hike back out). Walked in mid-June and there were mosquitos but not bad.
Rev. A — Google review
Always an enjoyable and easy walk. I love that there's usually a lot of birds and some Wildlife to enjoy. Kids love the walk and sitting on the benches at the end to watch for birds.
Becky B — Google review
A fun and easy trail for walking the kids. Starts off as a typical dirt trail but quickly transitions to an elevated boardwalk. The trail winds and wanders through the woods and marsh till ending on a nice platform with a picnic table. Would make for a nice picnic outing! Strollers are good, but keep in mind that the boardwalk is very narrow, so passing other walkers is tricky at times. Might not be the best trail for dogs, since they may jump off the walkway.
Josiah H — Google review
Very short. 1/4 mile one way. Very pretty area. Short flat dirt at the beginning and then board walk the rest of the way to the end. Crutches would probably be ok but not good for wheel chairs, just not enough room if you come up to some one would not be wide enough to pass.
Eric D — Google review
This place is a cool little trail. Like most others have stated, it is short! With that being said it is scenic at the end of the catwalk you get some pretty good views of the creek with the mountains in the background. If you are an avid hiker/trailbuster this might not be for you. The complete trail is flat, wobbly in some parts of the wetlands, and very very short so you might be a little let down by the difficulty. I personally didn't see much in terms of wildlife but perhaps that was just the day I was there. Bring your mosquito repellant if you are in the bad part of the summer. Depending on how well you GPS works, if you end up in a residential neighborhood you have gone too far, turn around and go back to a turn off just after the small bridge and there is a little gravel parking area with a sign and you know your there.
CA G — Google review
Beautiful short trail great for all ages. We also packed a lunch and were happy to find a picnic table at the end to sit, eat and enjoy the food. NOTE: The very beginning of the boardwalk is very slanted due to settlement so be careful (see pictures).
David B — Google review
I rode my Onewheel down to the end. What a fantastic place to take a walk, ride, or picnic! Wetlands are so important for wildlife habitat, pollution detoxification, flood control, and for us! Let’s not destroy these places for more sprawl and parking lots!

Great cross country skiing in the winter, awesome hiking trails with beautiful views over the mountains. Mountain biking trails are very technical and a blast with family and friends. Great outdoor vibes and scenery secluded from any city life. I would give more stars if I could.

Completed BBK trail with my kids today. Yes, there are some steep areas, but I think the hardest part for me was how slippery it was and trying to keep up with my boys. Amazing view at the top. Was definitely worth it.

Hidden treasure took me and my camera a few years to find. Ive only been there in the summer and it did not disappoint as far as birding goes. Yellow crowns, and thrush all over the place. Trails are great, heavily traveled and there are bathrooms, thats a huge plus. Massive parking lots is another plus

Independence Mine State Historical Park Visitor Center is a captivating destination that transports visitors back to the gold mining era of the early 20th century. Nestled in the stunning Matanuska Valley, this historical site features well-preserved buildings, including an old dining hall and administrative structures, offering a fascinating insight into the lives of miners and their families.
Amazing stop. Great history behind this place. Has great views of the hatchers pass and the valley. We'll maintained property and lots of historical artifacts. They had different mining equipments on display and lot of placards to explain how the whole process looked like. We loved the main house and the old pics for comparison showed how it has changed over years. Lots of parking available and Restrooms were in great condition too. There's a gift shop too.
Hiral V — Google review
Very cool place if you like historic things, geology or even just nature. Everything looks like it was just left and abandoned except for the visitor center and a few displays. I went on a Tuesday so it wasn't very crowded. Also, there are many trails at the site and around the area. The main path around the majority of buildings is paved and easy to walk.

Independence Mine State Historical Park is such a fascinating place to visit. The old gold mining camp gives you a glimpse into Alaska’s past, with historic buildings and breathtaking mountain views all around. Last night, we drove up near the park to an open area and watched the northern lights. It was absolutely magical—the quiet of the mountains, the cool night air, and the auroras dancing across the sky made the whole experience unforgettable.
Cris H — Google review
Great experience here in Hatchers Pass! They’ve many wonderful trails to explore and a lot of information to learn about the history of the area. We were really impressed! We hiked about 2 miles is all, but got in a decent workout thanks to the ascent. The lake was a beautiful end to our exploring - and still had ice on it in some spots! No bears spotted - but someone had earlier that week. $5 parking and plenty of it.
Sondra M — Google review
First of all Alaska state parks are amazing at $5 daily day pass in 2025. This site is incredible. So many different trails for different ability levels. My husband and son did a super challenging loop up to a lake. My mother in law and I walked maintained paths around the mine site. There were tons of families with strollers and every age child imaginable. Next the tour in bunk house 2 run by Salmon Berry is so worth it($15/adult but ask for different discounts kids, military, veteran, senior citizens) You get access into locked buildings. The site just received grants for renovations so some buildings are still closed. The tour is roughly an hour every hour.
Mallory C — Google review
Took my doggos for doggos adventure day. It was a Tuesday so not too many people. We had a good walk and wore them out. The trail is well worn and followable. A few slippery spots, but with good tread on your shoes, you should be fine. The view is always gorgeous, we just happened to pick a perfect day for it!
Tama W — Google review
We had the BEST time here! My husband had really wanted to see an old mine town on our trip and the Independence Mine had it all. They have a mine shaft you can view the entrance of and you are able to walk around the whole town. They have done a great job with putting information out of each of the buildings and areas around the site so you can learn more about what everything was used for and how the operation worked as well as the people who lived and worked there. When we were there, 2 buildings were open. The mine manager’s house and bunk house 2. Both of these had exhibits inside. We also went when there was still a bunch of snow at the top. We didn’t know this would be the case, but luckily we had our water proof hiking boots with us so we were still able to explore pretty comfortably. Don’t be like us though, check the weather before heading up the mountain. There might be snow even if it’s June! There are 2 public restrooms available in the parking area. They are your standard park restrooms and there is no sink, so bring your hand sanitizer. There is $5 parking fee. I’m not sure what the gift shop hours are but they do have snacks and drinks (like hot coco) incase you’d like something while you’re up there.

Whether you prefer a roundabout route or an out-and-back trail, this park caters to all preferences. The hilly terrain adds an extra challenge for those looking to give their legs a good workout. The trails are well-marked and maintained, ensuring a pleasant hiking experience.
Easy to moderate hiking and biking and horse trails. Always lovely, well groomed trails.

Pretty nice, lots of people walking dogs, many off leash so your enjoyment may depend on how you personally feel about that. Nice neighborhood/family feel to the spot. There is a long sledding hill that looks like fun as well as multiple trails to roam. There is a restroom facility but I didn't go in. Decent parking. If you live in the area it's a great spot for sledding or when you need to get outside, but want to stay local. No fee.

nice trails, very hilly, but good exercise. Medium amount of mosquitoes bring your feet! Great helpful signs along the route.

Crevasse-Moraine Trailhead is an amazing place to get into nature and do some bird watching, biking, skiing, running, or even horseback riding. The trails are kept very well, and there are several options for you to choose from. In the winter, several trails are groomed for skiing. I appreciate this place very much, because it reminds me of what Palmer and Wasilla used to look like before becoming built up. The trails are very important for wildlife (esp. birds) because of how fast the valley is growing and habitat is disappearing. I hope this place stays wild!

The Musk Ox Farm is a delightful non-profit destination that offers educational tours centered around the fascinating musk oxen. Visitors can enjoy guided walks led by knowledgeable staff who share intriguing stories and facts about these remarkable animals, which have survived since the Ice Age. The experience is both fun and informative, making it an excellent way to spend an hour or so. While the tour may not be ideal for very young children, it's perfect for those looking to learn more about wildlife in a unique setting.
We have been to here several times. The tours are 45 to 60 minutes long depending on the weather and the musk oxen. The tour staff have always been delightful and interesting. We recommend, especially in early summer with good weather.

Jessica was a great tour guide. They clearly love their animals and make efforts to keep the herd happy and healthy. We found this place on accident while on vacation and I'm so happy that we stopped and did the 45 minute tour. Worth the cost of the tickets!

Probably the only place you'll see Musk Ox up close! Faculty and staff were very nice and attentive. Their modern facility does a great job at showcasing these interesting, Arctic animals. I liked the tour, however I wish we could've seen more of the farm. We stood and talked in the same few places longer than I would've liked.

My partner and I were going back and forth between deciding to visit the zoo, wildlife preserve or the Muskox farm. Clearly we decided on the farm and we couldn’t have been happier. We chose the farm because we wanted a personal group experience with a knowledgeable guide. Our guide was Jessica and she was fun, knowledgeable and was able to answer all of our groups questions. We learned so much and it was really cool to be a safe distance to a muskox. We definitely enjoyed the hour long tour and would recommend!

Nestled in Palmer, Matanuska Brewery and Tap Room is a must-visit destination for food and beer enthusiasts alike. Having made multiple trips from Texas, visitors rave about the delightful menu featuring poke nachos, chili, grilled cheese with soup, and mouthwatering burgers paired with crispy Brussels sprouts. The knowledgeable staff enhances the experience by guiding patrons through an impressive selection of craft beers that rival those found across the country.
Such a cool place to eat at it. Love the food every time I’ve gone. I do wish they would offer at least a couple vegan items rather than having to customize a side salad for family members but if you aren’t vegan then pick anything and you’ll be happy!

We were traveling from Fairbanks to Anchorage (six hour drive) and decided to try out some food! I now now that we will definitely be coming back because we liked it so much! This place has some of the best fries I’ve ever had and the burgers were delicious too! On top of that the service was really good, our server was kind and made sure we had anything that we needed and would check in pretty regularly. However what I think makes this place so good is the atmosphere, you can tell that there has been a lot of work into making this place feel like a place you can come and have a great time with friends. The esthetic is was great indoors and the view outside with the mountains must’ve been amazing as well! Over all it was a great time with great food and at a great place and with great costumer service. I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to stop by and grab a bite going close to Palmer. Or if you’re lucky enough to live close by!

Sat outside and had a nice view of the mountains. Food and service was great. Poke nachos and brussel sprouts were 10/10! Definitely recommend stopping in here for a drink and/or bite to eat. Several in our group ordered some beers and root beer; all were well liked.

Matanuska Brewing Company knows how to do beer the Alaskan way! bold, inventive, and done right. Their Blue and Double Blue are absolute standouts, blending blueberry with beer in a way that tastes like tropical heaven. Just when I thought it couldn’t get better, they released a Berry beer that completely blew me away. And then today, walking through the grocery store I spotted Pineapple Express. This isn’t one of those gimmicky “pineapple flavor added” This is a true marriage of beer and pineapple, smooth and refreshing, and sweet unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. I thought, blue and double blue were a taste of tropical heaven, I was wrong! pineapple express transported me to a Sandy Beach right here in Alaska! When Matanuska says they have a beer for everybody, they aren’t kidding. Each release has felt unique and unforgettable. So I had to update it! I went out and picked up a few to share with my friends in Florida.

We had a wonderful dining and drink experience here. The blueberry seltzer over ice was the perfect drink on a warm, sunny afternoon. We were able to sit outside and enjoy our drinks and meals. My sandwich and fries were perfect and my husband had the wings and a Cobb salad, which he loved.

If you're looking for a captivating experience in Palmer, the Colony House Museum is an absolute must-visit, especially for history enthusiasts! This charming museum delves into the fascinating Matanuska Colony Project from the 1930s, which aimed to establish a farming community in Alaska by relocating families from the Midwest during the Great Depression. As you explore this historical gem, you'll gain insight into the daily lives of those early settlers who ventured northward.
The Colony House Museum was a very authentic experience. When you walk into that house, it is like you are there in the past. We had such a detailed tour it was awesome. The detail that has been put into this museum is fantastic. Anyone who is in Palmer and misses this is truly missing out. Thank you volunteers for all the work you do here, you have done an outstanding job. A great piece of Colonist history.

Veteran owned and operated Brewery. Their beers were really good 6 years ago when they opened, but they have managed to make them great. Biggest plus, every Thursday they release a new small batch flavor. Their indoor sitting room is a little cramped, but they are working on expanding and creating a larger room. Some nice outdoor seating when the weather is nice, and the Pho Nora Thai food truck is on location at this time. If you've been trying to decide what brewery to hit up, this one is a must.

2 adults and we had some free time and this place sounded interesting. We really couldn’t tell if it was aimed at children or adults but took a chance anyway. We had a great time. Nestled at the base of the breathtaking Matanuska Valley, Bodenburg Butte is a low, isolated mountaintop that offers an unforgettable hiking experience. The primary trail, known as the West Butte Trail, features over 500 stairs that not only provide a sturdy path during muddy shoulder seasons but can also become quite slippery in winter and spring due to ice and snow. Hikers often find themselves captivated by stunning views along their ascent.
When we were kids we used to climb the Butte a couple times a week just for something to do. Years later I went back and climbed it. I thought I was going to die before I reached the top. But the view from the top was still worth every step. I'm 72 now so I probably won't do it again, but if I find myself in the area you never know.

Great short hike. 2 sides to try. One side has a nice trail leading to stairs all the way to the top. The other is a more challenging climb without stairs and a steeper climb to the top. No matter your choice, the 360 degree views will not disappoint.
Rick G — Google review
Lots of stairs, but super worth it at the top!! This is my second time up, and I still enjoyed it.
Becca T — Google review
Beautiful views. If you hike up one trail you may want to go down that same trail. We started at The Butte Trailhead (Sandvik Family Trail) and came down the other side, on the stairs and ended up at the West Butte Trailhead. We aren't from the Palmer/Wasilla area so we didn't know what to expect. There didn't appear to be a direct route back (without hiking back up and down again) to our starting point so we had to walk 5 miles around, on the Bodenberg Loop road, to get back to the car. We enjoyed the hike, and detour back to the car, even if we didn't know exactly where we were going.

Nestled just off the main road, Pioneer Falls Trail is a hidden gem that beckons adventurous souls. While you can catch a glimpse of the stunning waterfall from afar, the true beauty lies in taking a short dirt path that leads you closer to its majestic cascade. The trail spans about 100-150 yards and offers an authentic experience as it winds through natural rocks rather than being paved or improved.

Gorgeous waterfall just off the road. You have to look carefully to find this place. There is a small sign that points to the falls. You can see the falls from the main road, but you really should take the dirt track up to the turnaround and walk the 100-150 yards up towards the falls for a much better view This is not an ‘improved’ site, so the trail isn’t paved or gravelled, other than the natural rocks. Its a waterfall in its most natural setting

The perfect horses were picked for us for the trail ride. My daughter is 8 and had never ridden before. The horse Tundra was chosen for her and was a perfect match. Beautiful moutain views throughout the ride. We rode twice with Drew and she is very friendly and knowledgeable. The owner, Katie, has such a welcoming way about her. I look forward to visiting this place again if we can make it out to Alaska again.

Wow! What a ranch. The service, scenery and animals were such a treat. Katie helped my daughter feel comfortable on a horse and we fell in love with Cloud the horse but there were so many to love on. Highly recommend for a true Alaskan ranch experience.

My guide, Kristian was so professional and patient and made me feel very comfortable on our trail ride. Beautiful scenery. Had a fantastic time!

We finished our week in Alaska by scheduling a last minute horseback ride and zip lining. Sunderland Ranch (Katie) helped make it happen. We started the day with Christian leading us on a beautiful 2 hour trail ride on Boz and Ms Angel. After lunch we zip lined. The two young ladies (sorry I don't remember their names) created the best experience for our group. They were professional and very enthusiastic about sharing their love for zip lining. They made sure everyone was safe and had a great time. I highly recommend every one to make Sunderland Ranch part of your adventures in Alaska.

My friends and I went for a trail ride yesterday and we had the most amazing time. The horses were very calm and very well behaved! Our guide was super kind and very knowledgeable. What a beautiful view and a very fun, yet peaceful trail ride! Will definitely come back!

This was a wonderful part of our Alaskan trip. Riding through the beautiful Palmer area and seeing what beauty the longer summer days and sun can bring. Wonderful horses that knew what to do (no experience needed). We brought my mom along who wasn't sure if she would be able to ride due to hip issues. Katie took the time to change out saddles on horses to see if mom could be able to ride. Unfortunately, she could not but allowed her to tour the stables, see the newest foal and got a full refund as well. We will definitely look at doing this again when we return next year. If you do not ride horses often just know you will be sore the next few days....but SO worth it to have this experience.

Reid was a great guide. Being from Texas, I had in my mind what he should be like when I drove up, and he was exactly that. Very hospitable and like a character outta Yellowstone. Ha ha. No, but seriously, he helped us feel safe riding and showed us how to control our horses. The fall foliage was amazing and the mountain views were beautiful. My horse, Boaz, was the sweetest, and I felt connected with nature. Loved it.

NOVA Alaska Guides offers an exhilarating experience of walking or climbing on the Matanuska Glacier, Alaska's largest road-accessible glacier. Located just 90 minutes from Anchorage, it provides an easy way to get up close and personal with these natural wonders. The tours are suitable for those in good shape and up for adventure, regardless of prior experience in glacier activities.
Great experience. We did ice climbing & glacier paddle boarding. 100/10 honestly. Our guide was so awesome with instructions and really made us feel comfortable on the ice. Once in a lifetime type of experience and a great one to check off the bucket list! The lazy river running through the glacier is something I’ll never forget!

Did the 3 hour glacier hike with Angie and Chantae. It was a really great tour and value. The guides were extremely fun. The communication was great on safety and direction during the excursion. They both had a wealth of knowledge about glaciers and the environment around us. They were very helpful with suggestions for other sites , activities and dinning in the area. We took several of their suggestions! The office was also very helpful before the trip. Hope to do other tours with Nova in the future!

We can’t say enough about Nova Alaska Guides. Everyone we encountered was great and both of our adventures were amazing! Pretty sure our 14 year old has now found his calling to come join your crew as a guide in the summers when he gets to college 😎🧗🏞️ Day 1 with Nova: We had an amazing day with Drew & Thomas on the Backcountry Ice Climbing tour. They were so knowledgeable & appreciated their attention to safety. This was a very long & challenging day but was something we will remember forever and a highlight from our Alaska vacation. We also really appreciated how much this tour challenged us (2 adults & 14 year old) & we’re proud that we accomplished it! Thank you Nova, Thomas & Drew! Day 2 with Nova: Wow! This was by far the most thrilling & exhilarating experience of our entire vacation! Once again, Nova guides continued to impress us with their attention to safety on the Six Mile Canyon Whitewater rafting experience. They made sure we were safe & had a blast from the time we got onto the bus. Huge thank you to Jarvis, Bear, Newbie & the rest of the crew! This haiku is dedicated to all of you 😉😂 Thrills in Alaska Bear took us down a river Yay! We didn’t die!

We joined the glacier hike tour and it was absolutely incredible! The rope descent was an unexpected thrill that made the adventure even more exciting. The entire experience was unforgettable, with breathtaking views at every step. Huge thanks to our amazing guides, Maya and Drew — they’re simply the best!

Drew is definitely one of the most knowledgeable, fun, and safe tour guides we've had on our one month excursion in Alaska. Our family had a memorable family time trekking and climbing the Matanuska glacier. Drew and his team made sure that everyone had a great experience of ice climbing while ensuring everyone's maximum safety. Ice climbing is a gear specific sport and NOVA ice guides ensured that all climbers are fully equipped. I highly recommend NOVA for ice climbing.

So amazing! The guides (Sam and Chante) were friendly, knowledgeable and fabulous and the tour was definitely do-able. Easy for most of it, we had to be a little careful with our footing for some of it but the chains/spikes for the boots were great. Also the boots they gave were super comfortable and fit really well. In 55 degrees, I wore a fleece, sweatshirt and windbreaker and I was totally fine. Really cool experience!

Fantastic excursion! Our guide, Angie, was very knowledgeable and great with our kid. Angie was relaxed and fun as a tour guide, but alert to hazards and always kept safety a priority. Would love to book another excursion again with her and NOVA next time we are in Alaska.

My trip on the glacier was wonderful and that was due to Nate, our guide. I really appreciated the small ratio of 1 guide to 4 customers. I especially enjoyed the extra time on the 6 hour adventure trek. Nate knows the glacier well and his attention to safety and adventure was fantastic.

Went ziplining for the first time today on a total whim, and I’m SO glad we did. Elizabeth and Emerson were truly awesome—super kind, patient, and down to earth. My friend’s kid was really nervous at first, but they took the time to interact with her, boost her confidence, and reassure her the ten (or maybe twenty) times she asked if anyone had ever died. 😂 Many high-fives were had when she finally decided to take the leap. It made the whole day feel extra special. Super grateful for their expertise and for an awesome experience, living out my Nat Geo dreams one zipline at a time. PS: Silver lining of being near the higher end of the weight limit: achieving near-supersonic speeds upon descent ⚡️💨😂

Good but maybe not great zip line, just one line you ride twice. Yes, it is fast, but just one line. The staff are friendly and helpful, but somewhat cavalier regarding equipment safety - my primary harness came loose from the trolly upon impacting the brake and thankfully the secondary remained attached. The staff seemed little concerned about this somewhat frightening failure. Regardless, if you dare, there is a nice package available with a MICA guided tour of the Matanuska Glacier.

We had the BEST time zipping with Ryan and Emma!! They took awesome pictures of us and made sure we were educated about the zip and the GLAY. Such a fun day!!! That second tower is so fast!!!

We booked the zipline at Matanuska Glacier to end our 2 week family vacation that began with several days in Vancouver, Canada, included a 7 night Alaskan cruise, and ended in Anchorage. Of all the activities and excursions we participated in during this trip (there were many), this was hands down the best thing we did! This was our first time zip lining, and I was worried my kids age 9, 11, 13, were going to chicken out. However, the guides were fantastic, and made us feel really comfortable. My kids wanted to go again once it was over! The drive is a bit far from Anchorage, but the views along the drive were incredible. We chose this zipline over another that was a shorter drive, and so glad we did. Their website was very clear on their refund and cancellation policy. We allotted a couple of extra hours in case of road construction so that we wouldn’t be late. That allowed us to hike trails nearby. The entire area is beautiful.
Jan S — Google review
The guides were great -- two young female workers (Gina and Madison) and their senior (Alec), all enthusiastic and cheerful, drove us to two points for the double zipline. The first line gets you to about 20-30 mph fast while the second one gets you to 60-65 mph fast. If the wind is too much, they cancel the second zipline and refund you 50%. But luckily in our case, the wind was just about the right speed to let us take the second zipline. It was a great experience.

Very Professional Operation. Tommy P. was our guide for the 3 hour tour. We were given instructions on how to operate the ATVs as each was a little different. Then he took us down by the river on a short course so we could become comfortable always checking on us and giving us local history. Thereafter, we crossed the road and really did some off-roading! Up hills, through valleys, and even played in the mud a little. Multiple moose sightings and sweeping views of the mountains and glacier. All-in-all it was a great experience and would recommend to friends. Also... there's a little espresso hut on site for coffee and little snacks.

If you ever traveling to Alaska this is just North of Anchorage a ways off the beaten path and it's a must-see and the guides are very knowledgeable. Pricing was good and they have zip ziplining, four wheeler guided tours and much more to offer.

Awesome time for our family. Prompt friendly service that made us all feel at home. Tom was very knowledgeable and took the time to ensure we were comfortable before heading out on the trails. Great views, fun trails and good stories. We got into some good mud and saw some moose. We are still working to get the mud off the kids faces. Great time and thanks again,we will be sure to recommend it to our friends.

We had the best time on this trip. We really enjoyed Tommy our guide and found him to be very knowledgeable and accommodating from beginning to end. He is very pleasant and safety conscious. All equipment and ATV/UTV’s are in great shape And well-maintained. We are so thankful we book this trip. We had one rider that had never been on anything like this Because she’s not a very outdoorsy person and she really enjoyed it. This is definitely a trip your whole family can enjoy. You better believe when we come back we will be booking again.

My wife and friends and I had nothing short than the time of our lives! Tommy made his schedule flexible to accommodate our last minute arrival. He had a great knowledge of the history of the land we rode on. The experience will definitely be unforgettable and I HIGHLY recommend it that you stop and take the tour if you're in the area! The views were breath taking and Tommy's jokes made for an even better and more fun ride!

We had such a great time with Tommy! Definitely recommend riding as a passenger and letting him drive if you don’t have a lot of experience with ATVs. With him driving you can get the full Indiana Jones experience, admire the views and see tons of different terrains. Highly highly recommend!!!

Nature & Parks
Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site offers a smaller campground with basic amenities like fire rings and picnic tables. The area provides expansive views of the valley and the glacier, with informative signs along a short trail. Visitors can also spot wildlife such as moose in the state park. Additionally, there is an option to take a tour and walk on the glacier for a fee.
What an incredible hike! I was expecting just a blah snow trail with a giant group of strangers, but our group was pretty small and the hike was such an adventure. (It’s $60 for Alaskans and military vets, and $150 each for everyone else. Restrooms are in the gift shop/pay station and in the gear station, where they provide helmets. Crampons are provided later on.) Our guide Kate was awesome; she told us tons of glacier facts, let us take our time and take pictures of whatever we wanted, let us explore nooks and crannies, and took pics for us. The views were gorgeous; we went from hot sunny temps to freezing cold, crossed from rocky terrain to the slippery ice, and climbed through blue ice canyons. We drank glacial water and put glacial mud on our faces. Super fun! Bring a ziploc bag or something to bring back glacial mud in, for a skin-care-lover’s souvenir.

What's to say... It's a glacier and you can drive to it. I will repeat it's a glacier you can drive to... So go do it! As you would expect there is some amount of physicality needed since you are walking on a glacier. But there are guides and equipment available (and required). We went with a small tour group, but I am told that you can also walk up.
Jesse D — Google review
Wonderful place! You can look at the glacier with a few steps to walk. Nice and quiet camp sites. Washrooms are very clean.

Fantastic scenery. I was here in Mid October and the glacier was visible from the road

Beautiful area for viewing the valley and Glacier. The views are expansive, stretching for miles. The Glacier stretches into the distance and around the mountain out of site. There is a short trail (one mile) that leads to different views with informative signs describing what you are seeing. We had a picnic her at one of the many tables available. All in all, this is a great place to visit.
Peter C — Google review
There’s a small day-use fee, I think it was $5 or $7, can’t remember exactly. You just get the envelope from the parking lot and put money in there then put it in a box. It’s a nice green space for picnic and family hangout. Nice short trail to the viewpoint of Matanuska Glacier, lots if mosquitoes on the trail. There are plenty of restrooms around.

Worth the drive from Anchorage. One mile hiking trail that's a nice break from the car ride. The trail is not flat due to tree roots and there are slightly steep portions. The additional view points with information are great.

MICA Guides offers thrilling experiences such as ziplining on the Nitro and G 2, which are among the longest in Alaska. The G 2 is also the fastest in the state, providing an exhilarating ride near Matanuska River and Matanuska Glacier. Their knowledgeable guides prioritize safety during activities like hiking and ice climbing. Visitors have praised their guides for being patient, professional, and skilled at leading groups.
Alaska trip will always be memorable. We started our first excursion with the Matanuska glacier walk. This glacier is over 22,000 years old and we got an amazing experience walking over it with MICA guides. Bailey was our guide. What I loved was that they kept the tour groups small so it was just us 4 with Bailey. She took her time explaining the history behind everything. That’s what we wanted, someone who was not rushed. She explained to us the benefits of the glacial mud. We even brought some of that home 😊 She helped us figure out what's inside a really deep hole created by the flowing water over so many years. It was dangerous to go any closer as we could slip in so we tried recording it using our selfie stick 😂 (spoiler: the stick wasn’t long enough to solve the mystery) But this goes to say that there is a lot of story in every part of the glacier and even though it's fun, it can be dangerous, so go with someone who knows their stuff. We also got to walk between the tall cracks of the glacier. What I couldn’t show was how cold and tasty the fresh water was that we drank directly from the glacier ❄️ All in all a 10/10 experience. I would definitely recommend them.

Shout out to Quinn and Alaina for an amazing glacier trek! We had so much fun laughing and learning from them. Trekking the glacier and getting to do some climbs and rappels was one for the books. Samantha was accommodating when weather conditions changed our initial helicopter plan and honestly, I think we won with the advanced trek - it became about the journey and not just arriving at the destination. We 💯 recommend MICA!

My family and I did the glacier hike and had an incredible time. There was great information on how to prepare and the staff was wonderful. Our guide, Bailey, was so sweet, knowledgeable, funny, helpful, and personable. She even gave us great recommendations on where else to go in the area. We all had such a great time and the glacier itself was obviously so worth it.

The private ice fall trek was an amazing trip with such a great guide, Beryl. This is the only tour we can attend with the two little one, since most of the tour require at least a minimum of eight years old. The trip itself is very interesting and adventure for the children, and also well educate. Thank you MICA guides and Beryl for this amazing glacier trip for our family.

Our experience with MICA Guides at Matanuska Glacier was truly one of the highlights of our Alaska trip! From the moment we arrived, everything ran smoothly — check-in was quick and easy, setting the tone for what turned out to be an extraordinary adventure. We weren’t entirely sure what to expect going in, but the glacier hike exceeded all of our expectations. It was thrilling, adventurous, and absolutely breathtaking. The terrain was diverse and exciting, and we were fortunate to have perfect weather during our hike — it started raining right after we finished, so we really lucked out! We were placed in a small, private group which made the experience feel even more special. Everyone was active and fun, and our guide, Sam, was phenomenal. His energy was contagious, and he was clearly knowledgeable, incredibly well-trained, and absolutely passionate about what he does. Sam was not only entertaining and encouraging, but also made sure we stayed safe while pushing our limits in the best way possible. He guided us to incredible viewpoints, helped us climb unique ice formations, and made sure we didn’t miss a thing. He’s a true professional and clearly born for this kind of wilderness guiding. Reaching the top and taking in the vast, glacial views was nothing short of magical — it felt like we were on another planet. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that’s hard to put into words. If you're visiting Alaska, this glacier hike is an absolute must-do, even if it requires a long drive (which it did for us — and it was so worth it). Thank you, MICA Guides, and especially Sam, for an unforgettable day!

This hike was absolutely worth recommending! Our guide, Ryan, was extremely reliable and led us on a long and beautiful journey to see stunning glaciers. In the more challenging sections, he stayed close to help and ensure we passed safely. He even got us fresh glacier water to drink and shared fascinating explanations about the geology, landscape, and glacier features. Highly recommended!

We highly recommend ice climbing with MICA Guides! Dakota was our guide for our June 2025 private ice climbing tour and he was fantastic! Our younger son is 11 and Dakota was especially patient and encouraging with him. The adventure was definitely family friendly, and everyone at MICA was friendly and courteous. The scenery was breathtaking, we loved the trek out to the glacier and learning from our guide. We each got to do 4 climbs and Dakota tailored the outing for our individual skills. We had a phenomenal trip to Alaska, full of epic hikes and adventures, but when people ask us what our favorite part was, we all mention our day of ice climbing on Matanuska Glacier!

We had a fabulous time with our guide Sam. Our group of 6 (ages 11, 13, 17, 19, 42 and 43 years old) felt safe hiking around the glacier. Mica lends you raincoats if needed and boots with ice spikes to make the trek easy. Sam was great at taking photos and sharing details about the ice. Highly recommend MICA guides for a group looking for some nature adventures.
