Black Moshannon State Park

Park
Park encompassing forests & wetlands, with tent & cabin camping, ranger programs & other activities.
Loved this park. The boardwalk trail was great and led to the bog. I did find the signage a little bit difficult to find looking for the bog. But it was well worth it once I did. The bathrooms were the nicest I’ve seen at a State park ( at the park office). It was a cold, rainy day and my dog nor my mother were into that so I’ll go back and explore more on a nicer day.

First time camping here. Came for a 3 night long weekend for Women in the Wilds program Saturday. Very professionally ran program. Campground was great with spacious electric site #43, hot showers, great hand dipped ice cream at the camp store, kayaked the gorgeous lake. *Note: cell service is great at cabin #20 which has 2 large parking lots but not enough room to turn around with a camper attached. Some got service at the water tower in the campground (1 bar) most didn't

My go-to spot for beautiful, challenging mountain bike trails or magical hiking. Around every corner I often expect to see a Hobbit making his way back to the Shire, but pausing to take in the beauty of Blackie first.
Robert S — Google review
Beautiful park on top of a pretty good hill. There is a lake and swimming beach and nice hiking trail with boardwalk. Campground is well maintained, bathhouses are clean and modern. Sites are spacious, a few with FHU.
Sandy K — Google review
Beautiful park. Good site options for staying overnight. Fun day use areas for water activities and picnics as well as a playground. Little to no cell service but park office brochure gave directions for where it’s likely to be found. Bathrooms were clean.

The camp store, Sleepy Hollow Outpost, has the cutest souvenirs and really great food and ice cream. The kayaking is pretty. Campground is nice!

A completely lovely park. Rangers are very engaging and friendly. Campground was packed but still quiet and restful. Lovely

The Arboretum at Penn State

Mentioned on

Arboretum
Nature & Parks
Gardens
The Arboretum at Penn State is a delightful university-managed destination that invites visitors to immerse themselves in its stunning woodlands, vibrant fields, and beautifully curated botanic gardens. This scenic spot is perfect for leisurely strolls, especially during the warmer months when the flora is in full bloom. Families can explore various themed sections such as the children's garden, mountain area, meadow space, and the newly established pollinator garden. The pavilion on the north side offers breathtaking views of this natural oasis.
Visiting from Florida. The grounds were beautiful. My kids absolutely loved the kids area. We didn't get to see everything, so will definitely be back next vacation!
Crystal W — Google review
The Arboretum is beautiful. A very peaceful place to reconnect with nature and Mother Earth. The plant life is spectacular. They take such good care of this place. The children’s garden is amazing and I’m so glad they included an area for kids. Many thanks to all the donors who helped make this place possible. It is a good escape from the college/downtown mayhem. Pay to park its $1 for 1hour. Entrance is free.

A hidden gem in town with something to enjoy in every season, and best of all—free entry! The arboretum has plenty of parking, a beautiful art museum, Childhood’s Gate, a greenhouse, an impressive fountain, beehives, and a small pond full of fish. The greenery and flowers make it such a peaceful and scenic spot to visit.
Tauhida A — Google review
Absolutely lovely Arboretum. So many beautiful flowers and plants to see throughout. We visited at the end of summer and some things are dying off as expected but still so many flowers are in bloom. Lots of beautiful butterflies and bees and the art installations throughout are super cool. Love the creativity in so many ways that they display and grow the plants. An added bonus is it’s Free! Can you believe it? I really enjoyed that it wasn’t overly crowded and you could mostly enjoy the different areas alone rather than moving with a heard of people. If I lived in State College I would be frequently visiting, even just to sit and read a book or take in the beauty of it all. The children’s area is an absolute gem and kids would love it. They seem to host a large variety of events and I do believe you can host a private party. Will definitely return. My Aunt who brought us there said it has a gorgeous fall display in another few weeks. Highly recommend!

A very nice green oasis on the campus of Penn State University! The arboretum at Penn State has lovely grounds with many beautiful features and gardens throughout. There is a nice children’s area, wildflower gardens, bird observation area, bat cave, sundial, ponds, and much more!

Beautiful place, feast the eyes and heavenly opportunity to the budding botanists. A full day affair if one wants to relax and picnic
Prasad S — Google review
Such a surprise! We came to the area for Penn’s Cave and stayed near the Arboretum. It is one of the loveliest gardens I’ve ever visited. In fall the colors of flowers and the changing leaves were spectacular, the place is immaculately kept, and the paths held a surprise around every bend.. We visited the nearby Art museum and all together spent an invigorating two+ hours. Definitely want to return in other seasons.

Sights & Landmarks
The Pennsylvania State University, often referred to as Penn State, is a vibrant flagship institution with an expansive network of 24 campuses across the state. A highlight for many students and visitors alike is the exhilarating atmosphere at Beaver Stadium during Nittany Lions football games—an experience that truly captures the spirit of college sports. Beyond athletics, Penn State offers a plethora of engaging activities suitable for all interests, from arts and culture to nightlife adventures.
One of the finest University Campuses I have ever been too. I graduated in 1985 and did not appreciate the beauty of the buildings and grounds until years later.

What an amazing campus. We stayed "in town". Which is honestly still pretty much part of the campus. Pubs, diners, assorted other eateries. The University speaks for itself, of course. World class.

Penn State University, State College (Main Campus). It’s alright, quite an expansive campus - didn’t go all around it but looks well laid out.

The University of Sandusky what embarrassment to a educational establishment. This university has no integrity. Brings so much joy when the Sandusky Lions fail to win.

This campus is a very academically professional University. I really enjoyed getting my education here and having the support I needed in the first place. My family was in danger and I had helped the University save many people’s lives.

Johnstown Flood National Memorial

Sights & Landmarks
South Fork dam preservation site with a visitor center & a film about the devastating 1889 flood.
The staff was super kind and friendly. They were very informative Super clean restrooms. Definitely one of the smaller national parks but a gem just the same. Go see it if you're in the area.
Natalie R — Google review
A well-done site with media and history about the Johnstown Flood. The rangers are helpful, and maps are available at the visitor center. There are a few smaller trails, but nothing major. The area is fairly quiet and offers a great view of the old lakebed.
Sam L — Google review
This memorial is free to enjoy. It provides a view of where the dam was, historical information on the flood and a small gift shop. There is also a movie that provides additional information. Would recommend this over the museum.
Danielle H — Google review
Cute visitor center that tells interesting history story. Don't forget to check out cemetary in Johnstown where you can see the graves.
Kaelynn M — Google review
We stopped about half hour before closing to kill some time before a basketball tournament. Pleasantly surprised by this jewel of a museum. Very informative about the flood that wiped out and killed so many people. Local history is very interesting. A great place to visit. Friendly staff. No admission fee.

I visited this place as a child, for a field trip with school. It has stuck in my memory since. I recently returned with my own children, so they could learn themselves. There is so much knowledge to be learned and many artifacts and photos. The view itself is amazing.

A Piece of history we were unaware of and glad we found this memorial….the rangers were so informative and we learned so much! If you’re in the area, don’t miss out on this NPS Memorial

I've never traveled this section of 219 before, and I had a gap of time between appointments today. I saw a sign and decided to follow it. The visitor center and gift shop were great. The scenery was great, and I was happy I could drive down to the lookout point. The volunteers inside were so nice.

Blue Knob All Seasons Resort

Ski resort
Nature & Parks
Casual quarters with kitchens & balconies in a ski resort offering a golf course, dining & pools.
We have just finished our tour of all of the ski resorts in a 2 1/2 hour radius of our home. Blue Knob is without a doubt our favorite. The slopes are amazing. The lodge is basic but very comfortable. The staff is in departments are exceptionally friendly and helpful. We will be heading back for Christmas! Thank you, Blue Knob.
Karen S — Google review
Not sure what’s worse the snowmaking or the people who work there . First it’s the best winter PA had in ages and blue knob still manage to have terrible conditions. Apparently they don’t make snow and it shows. Bare spots, icey and skied off. Every else in the tristate conditions are great this place they are terrible. And people said this is the best conditions they can remember!!!! Now we get to the staff. They are the rudest people. I don’t know who is worse the bartender or the ticket window. They obviously are miserable with their jobs and they take it out on you. I with the notable exception of the lifties and the cafeteria girls they were nice. They, and i could be wrong were immigrants so they weren’t infected with the toxic culture of this place. Speaking of the cafeteria the food is disgusting. They leave fries under a hot lamp to go cold and greasy and then charge $5 for them. I had the worse burger I have ever had. Don’t waste your time driving there it’s the worst mountain with the rudest employees I’ve ever skied.
Nev H — Google review
Summer visit - Not ski / winter related We were looking for a place to stay near Blue Knob State Park for a sentimental family trip and stumbled across the resort (we are from out of state). Some family stayed in the state park and we elected to book a condo at the resort. It was a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom unit (1101). It was nice for our family of 5. The resort is quaint - mom & pop style, nothing fancy. But had a great stay. The pools, clubhouse and golf course are within walking distance. Staff was kind. Check in was simple. Pricing was fair. Kitchen super, super well stocked. Beautiful little area. The rooms are aged but do the job. We weren't here a ton anyways. Things to know - there is no AC! It was in the 90s during the day in July (70s at night) and mostly comfortable but if you need AC for any reason, the units do not have it. To earn 5 stars - we would have loved extra towels and washclothes. The unit sleeps 6-8 easily but only 4 sets of towels for a 4 night stay was rough. The kitchen was well stocked but would have been great to just have dish soap, TP, paper towels vs having to bring them or buy them. Some extra fans - the bedroom with the bunks gets so stuffy and if you open the curtains the blinding outdoor lights shine right in. The construction outside was just a nuisance - loud during the day and the contractors weren't super courteous - trash thrown around, sharp metal debris thrown by the walkway, wood blocking the wall way, etc. the maintenance is needed & I'm sure it will be great when done but wasn't fun while here.
Megan E — Google review
This is the steepest mountain in a 3 hour drive radius of Pittsburgh. The lift ticket prices are reasonable and the mountain never disappoints. The food in the lodge is of good quality and reasonably priced with healthy options if that's what you're looking for. We skip Seven Springs all the time to come here!!
D B — Google review
Middle of the road mountain experience, very few trails open and almost nothing is maintained. The workers inside were reather hostile, with the old lady walking around in particular, as she would move items of mine without asking or something of that nature. Overall, not worth an overpriced day pass. GO TO SEVEN SPRINGS IF YOU WANT A PA MOUNTAIN EXPERIENCE!!!!
Dom D — Google review
Blue Knob is a very special place! We have been skiing here as a family for several years and loved it so much that my husband joined ski patrol, my kids joined the ski team and we bought a condo. It is the most family-friendly resort you will find with prices that can’t be beat!

I appreciate the opportunity to see the craftsmanship from previous centuries and appreciate their artistry and the hardships they faced. I hope those my age and younger who live in the area will reconnect with the history being shown here to preserve it for future students and continue to reinterpret it as we learn more about our past.
Becca B — Google review
My aunt used to bring me here when I was young and I thought it would be a great place to bring my niece to show her something new we had so much fun. They had people walking around dressed in the times telling us about the past and who they were and what significance they had in that time. The staff is so nice and they love showing you there trade and teaching you about what they are doing. It's definitely a cool place to take your children for a fun learning day. We didn't habe to wait at all to get in and it is very affordable 👌

Great example of period housing. We need to stop going mid-week and visit these places on the weekends so more people are there to explain stuff. I love how the buildings were condensed in one area so it was easy to walk around and see all the buildings.
Warren P — Google review
We stopped by this place while on a long back roads road trip. Even though we spent a few hours here, we could have spent much longer. There is so much to see. It was quiet, not a lot of people which is nice, however there weren't many 'period' people either around to talk to about the history.

We visited for the annual Murder Mystery. It was a really nice evening. I recommend. The grounds are beautiful and the volunteers do a wonderful job.

We only had 1.5 hours to go through everything, but we still enjoyed it very much. I'd recommend allowing at least 2 hours to be able to listen to the QR code information that is available at a more leisurely pace.

The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad offers a unique blend of transportation history and breathtaking mountain views. This heritage railroad operates from Cumberland to Frostburg, taking passengers through the Allegheny Mountains on ex-Western Maryland Railway trackage. The journey includes notable attractions such as an iron truss bridge, the Helmstetters Horseshoe Curve, and the 914-foot Brush Tunnel beneath Piney Mountain.
The train is awesome. The views are stunning. I had a great time. $45 for a 4+ hour event is a great price. The ability to sit in the open air cart was cool too. Cumberland and Frostburg are some of my favorite towns.
Sonny A — Google review
It was a beautiful ride however, unless you want to get smacked with bits of coal and dust and bugs, I recommend sitting in the closed window area. It took a week for me to fully scrub all the coal or whatever was in the air from the trains smoke. It was a much better ride back when I realized that there was an area with closed windows. At the stop in Frostburg there’s a nice little eating area. The nachos were delicious. I highly recommend with the pulled pork. There’s a wonderful carriage museum. That was very educational. It was a nice little rest area. Overall I give the trip a 8.5 out of 10.
Antonella T — Google review
Actually, I give 4.5 stars. This railroad experience is awesome! Several different train options and experiences. People are friendly and the scenic views are amazing. A few things to know: -don’t bother going up into Frostburg. Many stores and most restaurants closed. And it’s not much to look at either. Spend your time walking down the trail, reading the coal miners historical walls or the little museum. -be very careful if you are a party of two and reserve a table that can seat 4. Mostly likely you will be seated with strangers. We just watched a poor couple who sat with people who talked - about themselves- the entire trip up and back. Couldn’t even enjoy the scenery. They just sat there and had to listen - dome car is very nice. But know the tables are Small. Felt cramped. Bring your own food and enjoy a nice meal with appetizers provided.

Magnificent engine. Stunning views. We did the lunch class. Food and drink service was good. Server was attentive. Kids might like the coach class better as it’s open. Both city Cumberland and Frostburg are stunning to walk around with lots of history. Train stopping for one and half hour at frostburg gave us the perfect time to explore the lovely city. This is a hidden gem we didn’t know about.
Lopa P — Google review
The Frostburg Flyer was a perfect way to spend a day with family. Fortunately for us, the 1309 Steam Locomotive was up and running (only weekends), and it chugged its way along the tracks for a slow, steady climb up the mountain to Frostburg. With temps in the 70's, we chose to sit in the open air car. The signs are correct, you will get covered in ash and soot, but I think that's all part of the experience. Most of it just brushed off when we stood up, but it was all over everything. If you didn't want this full experience, you can sit in the enclosed cars. The scenery was great, the conductor's narration was informative, and the services at the Frostburg station were plenty. Knowing that the diesel engine would pull us back down to Cumberland on the return trip, we rode in the open air car again, and that was just about perfect. No soot and ash on the return trip. If you're looking for a scenic ride, a family-friendly outing, and to live the steam train life first-hand, the Western MD Scenic Railroad is hard to beat.
Bill T — Google review
We booked the dome class for 4 people and paid around $600 including the security fee, expecting a premium scenic experience. Unfortunately, the ride fell short in several ways. We had no idea that the train would do a round-trip without turning around, so we were stuck on the less scenic side for the entire journey. All the best views were on the opposite side. For the price, it would’ve been much fairer if the staff rotated tables or offered a lower price to ensure everyone got a balanced experience. The service and communication were poor. The person sharing route commentary stood near the entrance, and we could barely hear what was being said throughout the car. It felt unorganized and unengaging. The complimentary charcuterie board was also underwhelming — mostly just pretzels, a couple of stale cheese varieties, a few crackers, one type of salami, and bottled water. Definitely not what you’d expect for the price. Lastly, the condition of the dome car itself was concerning. The window above us was cracked, which made it uncomfortable (and a little scary) to sit beneath. Overall, this experience did not feel worth the money. We were excited about a relaxing, scenic ride, but left disappointed. This train has potential, but major improvements are needed in value, fairness, service quality, and maintenance. Seats(D3A, D3D)

The ride and the views were beautiful 😍 It was my first train ride and I enjoyed it. I gave it a 4/5 for a few reasons. First, it didn't specify that you only have a meal option if you book the lunch ride. We booked the Dome so we could have better views (totaly worth it), but we assumed we would be able to order food at an additional cost. That wasn't the case. However, they do provide light snacks and water, and you can purchase soda, tea, and alcohol. I don't think the 90-minute layover in Frostburg is enough time. We struggled to find a restaurant that was open and didn't have a long wait (we went on a Friday afternoon). We ate at "The Princess Restaurant," which has diner type food, and it was delicious and fast service. Also, the space between the table and seats on the train is rather cramped. I'm only 5'1", and I barely had leg room from the other couple sitting across from us. A larger man was sitting across us at our table, and he was very uncomfortable. Overall, it's still worth it, and we had a nice time! Just wanted to share a few details that may help others 😊
Carri K — Google review
The train ride was great! The atmosphere and service were truly amazing experiences. My family and I will definitely do this again. We rode in the lounge class, and the drinks were delicious and unique.

This was a breath of fresh appreciation for God's beautiful creation. On our return trip from Ohio visiting family, we stopped here just to relax and enjoy the clear weather and perfect 75* temps. While my wife paused with a view of her eyelids, I took to the trail that led to a 10-mile view across some of the mountains and valleys of Maryland. We didn't use the facilities this time, but on previous trips we have and it's been pleasant. Today it was all about pausing to take in the beauty. At one point as I was at the peak of the viewing area, a patriotic hymn rose from the depths of my childhood and I belted out the words to "God Bless America." No one else was nearby and it was incredible to just stand in the reality of the gift of freedom. Our culture spends so much time being busy and I admit I get caught in the whirlwind and rat race of it. So moments like this are such a blessing. Clean, WARM (in winter), bathrooms and a nice place to stretch one’s legs while enjoying a stunning view of the mountains. One of the most scenic rest areas I’ve been to. A few educational sign boards explaining the history of the mountain pass and the National Road. Gives an appreciation for the challenges our predecessors faces and how the current highway came to be.

Stopped by the Sideling Hill Welcome Center looking forward to taking photos from the top of the hill viewpoint, but unfortunately, the pathway was locked off with a chain—likely due to needed repairs. It seems it has been closed for a while, which was a bit disappointing. That said, the rest of the visit was great. The area is extremely clean, with well-maintained restrooms (which is always a plus). The scenery is beautiful and the views from the lower areas are still very impressive. Plenty of picnic spots and open space make it family friendly and a great place to stop, stretch, and unwind. Very peaceful and refreshing. Would love to return when the upper path is reopened.

Nice little scene on the side of the road. They even had the looking machine u put a qtr in. 😂 And then they had vending and restrooms.

This is a great stopping point to enjoy the beautiful views and visit the restrooms. The huge rock formations are very interesting. There always seems to be water or ice coming down the very steep rocks. Great place for a short stop to stretch your legs. Pet-friendly.

8/23/24 Very clean facility. The welcome center has many informative pamphlets with a sweet helpful employee to answer questions. The vending machines are in a separate building close to the parking lot. The wheelchair ramp is on the side of the building. Outside picnic tables had awesome views. NOTE I didn't see semi parking.

Whitetail Resort

Ski resort
Nature & Parks
Year-round resort with winter ski slopes, a summertime golf course & multiple restaurants.
Whitetail resort is only 1 hour 30 minutes from Washington DC and a perfect getaway for families looking to do something fun. We did the snow tubing and kids had a blast. Tickets have to be booked online and I highly recommend the one with hot chocolate. You arrive and get your tickets at the counter and head to the area where you get your tube and then head ip the slope. It’s interesting as you just stand and the moving floor takes you ip the hill. Stand in line which sometimes can be long but once it’s your turn, you slide down the hill. It’s really fun and we felt it was safe as well. All the employees were welcoming and helpful.
Binod G — Google review
The only reason that I am giving Whitetail 4 stars is because it's not Colorado. Overall it's a good resort for being within a two hour drive from DC. You can easily go skiing and come back in the same day. This winter we had more snow and Whitetail had a good season. The lodge has everything you need including lockers, food, drinks. The selection could include more veggies but then again most people want those chicken tenders. Available: ski and snowboard rental, lessons, snow tubing, store, Starbucks coffee, restaurant, and more.

Skiing and snowboarding at White Tail Resort 🎿❄️ — so much fun! 😍 Perfect slopes, beautiful snowy scenery 🌨️⛷️ Great place to enjoy winter sports with friends or family 🏔️✨ Definitely an unforgettable experience! ⛄💖

Really nice experience at the park. The trails are well laid out, The Snow is currently being manufactured but once a good storm rolls thru it'll all be covered. There are lockers to rent, plenty of seating to chill out, eat some food, etc. I think the only thing that would be nicer is comfortable seating as the chairs are rocks. There's a gas firepit out in the courtyard as well. There are not a ton of parking spots and it was definitely parking lot hockey trying to find something. We got there in time for the first round of folks to start leaving so that helped. Passes are confusing. They have folks situated randomly on the sidewalk who say nothing to you just walk up to you and click their handheld scanner at you. There were some staff who were helpful but most were standoffish. Food is decent and there are a variety of options at resort prices so bring $$. Coffee is trash but it will warm you up at least. It's a convenient spot with some nice highlights but the lack of helpful people was my biggest issue and my biggest disappointment.

Great atmosphere. Although i have been skiing here and enjoyed the array of trails they offer. I have yet to hit the slopes this season. But I will test for the newer restaurant/bar day break. Great atmosphere, good food even with its limited menu. and the staff, Especially Morgan is quit welcoming, knowledgeable and has you whatever you need as soon as you need it! Oh and the fact it's dog friendly is a huge bonus. My boy Ace lovess coming and visiting!

I’ve been going to white tail since I was a kid. Recently I took my husband there for his first time ; for this birthday. We had a great time. The price is very reasonable and checking in is a breeze, you just need your confirmation number from the confirmation email. The staff are nice and helpful. I especially would like to give Roy a special shout out. He was so fun and just had a contagious joy about him. He pulled us down the hill in our tubes. He had everyone dancing and laughing and even took group pictures for the families going down the hills. Such a sweet guy and he made our experience even more memorable. My husband enjoyed himself so much he wants to start going there as a tradition for his birthday !

I had the most wonderful experience here. So, I purchased some tickets for snow tubing for my daughter's birthday. However somehow the tickets were for the day I purchased not the date I needed them. When we arrived at the resort I was told that my reservation was for Jan 27th not the current date. I was so upset, the customer serve here was magnificent. The lady reassured me that customer satisfaction was their priority and she would fix the problem. We were blessed to be taken care by such sweet lady. She fixed the problem and gave us new tickets. We enjoyed the 2 hours we paid for very much. Thank you White Tail for hiring such wonderful people. We had an excellent time. I have recommended this place to a lot of my friends.

Love this resort. It was great for beginners. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I love that there was a ski lift chair in the practice area. It went very slow and was a great way to get started. I went with a group with beginners to intermediate level skiers and there was something for everyone.

Paw Paw Tunnel

Mentioned on
1 list
Tunnel
Sights & Landmarks
The Paw Paw Tunnel is a canal tunnel located in Western Maryland that was opened in 1850. The tunnel features a long towpath trail and brass plates that explain its history, making it an excellent location for those interested in the history of the C&O canal. Currently, there is construction going on at the site, but visitors are still able to go through the tunnel with caution as it is boarded up except for one small opening.
Amazing, just wow! So glad I made the journey out in the freezing temperatures to see the tunnel snow covered and frozen over. Park at the paw paw tunnel parking lot and walk the .5 mile along the C&O trail to the tunnel. The tunnel itself felt like it was a .5 mile or so itself. There was a smell in there but it was very neat to walk through. Also, it was warmer inside the tunnel then out. Don't forget to bring headlamps or a flashlight.
Amanda C — Google review
This is a unique spot with a trail with a great view of the Potomac. The tunnel itself is a short walking distance from the parking lot if you are not interested in the loop trail. I highly recommend bringing a flashlight. Cell phones are fine but not as bright as a flashlight and the walking path is uneven with holes and cracks in some areas. Watch your step! There is a short boardwalk path on the other side of the tunnel. There is also a campground by the parking lot.
Michele L — Google review
We hiked down the hill from a parking lot to the bridge using Google maps as a guide, and saw what looked like much friendlier roads leading up to the tunnel, so I think there is likely easier ways to get there. It's a long tunnel with an uneven narrow walkway and no lights. I would not want to go through it by myself. Very cool looking piece of history. If your hiking I would be careful, it looks like it's all trees and smooth slope down to the water, but there are some sharp cliffs not to far off the pathways, be careful if you go off the path or you could fall and get hurt.
Ross K — Google review
Nice change of pace hike. Parked at the PawPaw Tunnel Campgrounds and walked the trail to the tunnel. I hadnt realized how long the tunnel would be and at 3116 feet long it was pretty impressive. Walkway inside tunnel is very uneven and had puddles so make sure you have a flashlight of some sort and sturdy shoes on. Boardwalk on the other side was nice. Path past the boardwalk was muddy in spots but easy to go around the worst. Made it to the Sorrel Ridge Campsite before heading back. So some deer and lots of fall colors. Overall it was a nice quiet walk with only a few people, would definitely do it again
Cyndi W — Google review
Two different areas to be aware of, theres the upper parking area on the mountain, and another parking access much closer to the tunnel below. Beautiful area, a few ignorant cyclists refusing to dismount crossing the bridge so I offered little room to pass without stopping. Yeah, im that guy ... dont care, get off your saddle here. Otherwise a most excellent area to check out .. repeat value is low, but if you haven't seen it yet, its worth the time. Enjoy!
Jason M — Google review
An amazing short hike that was fun and beautiful. Not the easiest to find. Was told there are several ways to get there. We hiked down a small hill with switchbacks. Definitely take a flashlight to walk trough the tunnel.
Debra G — Google review
I go backpacking all over the place. The one place I keep coming back to is the C & O Canal Towparh at the Paw Paw Tunnel. I begin my trips at the parking lot and hike through the tunnel. I will then go out to the one of the hiker biker camps on the other side. Sometimes the hike is out to the first camp which ends up only being a total of 2 or 3 miles. Sometimes I keep hiking and camp at one of the next two sites. That ends up being 7 - 8+ miles. No matter where I camp, I'm always experiencing hiking through the tunnel out and then back the next day. The Towpath with the tunnel and locks down the trail on the other side of the tunnel is a throwback in history. Even if you just come for the day, it is well worth the trip. As everyone states... bring a flashlight or headlamp. This review was posted January 2025, but the pictures were from October 2023 during one of my many trips.

Cacapon Resort State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Resort hotel
Cacapon Resort State Park is a picturesque destination offering a variety of activities for all ages. The park features hiking trails, a swimming lake, and a golf course, as well as nature programs led by knowledgeable naturalists. Visitors can stay in the lodge or cozy cabins equipped with modern amenities and surrounded by stunning views. The on-site restaurant serves delicious breakfasts and pizzas, while outdoor cooking facilities are also available near the beach.
This state park is very nice, and seems well kept. Once you're on the trails, they are well marked and are easy enough to navigate. The cabins look very nice, although we did not stay in them. The road to the overlook and Almost Heaven Swing is only open May-October, and gets a lot of traffic midday, so plan accordingly. Looked like a nice beach as well.

This is an absolutely beautiful, well-kept state park! It has a gorgeous lodge, golf course, tennis and pickle ball courts, children's playground, lake with a beach, horseback riding, dog park and much more. Drive to the top of the ridge for stunning scenic views. Oh, and there's hiking, too, and a nature center. This place is a must-see if you're in the area!

What an amazing fall getaway experience 1.5 hours from DC. It was an easy drive and I was super impressed with all the park had to offer as well as the lodging accommodations. Offers so much to include biking, hiking, horse back riding, golf, pickle ball & tennis, nature center, playground for children, swimming & hot tub, spa , fire pits clay shooting, fishing . It's an incredible place and staff are so helpful .

Cacapon Resort State Park offers free entry and ample free parking, making it a great family-friendly destination. The large playground and picnic benches by the scenic lake create a perfect spot for relaxation and outdoor meals. Restroom’s availability is also good. Visitors can enjoy peaceful fishing or explore the park’s moderate hiking trails surrounded by natural beauty.

A beautiful State Park to visit. There is a dam with water overflowing, picnic areas, restrooms, nature center, playground and if you travel 4 miles up the mountain you can view 4 states from the overlook. It's absolutely breathtaking. Also on your journey up the mountain, you cross the most northern part of VA.

We have stopped here countless times through the years as a lunch break on our travels. There are many choices of picnic tables at which to eat and a variety of views. The small lake has a swimming area as well as stocked fishing attractions. There are streams, foot paths and a waterfall that we have explored while stretching our legs. There are a few different restrooms with running water and flushing toilets. I have always found them to be clean, if a little dated. There is a cool nature center with tons of displays and info about wildlife and local ecosystems. During the off-season, the only open restroom is in the nature center. The only drawback is the gnats. They are the worst in the summer. This is a State Park, we are outdoors, so this can be expected! It's no fault of the park. There are cabin rentals, a golf course, a big lodge, and a seasonal restaurant and l believe there are signs for horsebackriding. I have not visited any of these attractions. I think this is a great park and highly recommend it

Simply beautiful! Cannot wait to return. My husband and I came to spend a day on the golf course. Definitely recommend but bring cash for snacks and drinks. After golf we headed to the restaurant for some early dinner, DELICIOUS! Get the cream of crab, as a Marylander, it was 10/10! Also, do not and I repeat, do NOT skip out on the view at the top of the mountain. Was a perfect day!

Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad

Tours
Historical landmark
Locomotive excursions that include meals in the dining car, plus bald eagle spotting & souvenirs.
What a wonderful experience! We took the train into The Trough and chose the Superior dining option. The service was top-notch and the food was fabulous. The decor felt like traveling back in time. Then there was the magic of the scenery, especially the bald eagles. There were 15 sightings on our trip. My husband and I are already planning to do it again this Winter. Highly recommend.

Absolutely wonderful! The staff are some of the nicest, most accommodating people I've ever met. The train is wonderful. The ride itself is so smooth, it felt like I was riding on air. They must really put a lot of time into maintaining the tracks, as I've never had such a smooth ride. The food and service is awesome. Such a fantastic way to spend the afternoon. The scenery is gorgeous. Highly recommend!!

We had a wonderful time on our all day train ride to Petersburg. We decided to go with the Club Service and did not regret it. The seats were so comfortable and we appreciated the climate controlled car on the hot day. The dining experience was tremendous with excellent dishes and the very attentive attendant in our car. Tara made sure our glasses were always full and served our food in a very professional manner. We saw bald eagles on the trip on both passes through the "Trough." The staff did a stupendous job of sighting and pointing out the eagles. I highly recommend this trip
Cindy C — Google review
Wanted to do something different so the Potomac Eagle came up when I Googled "train rides in WV". Sounded awesome from the first time I got on the website, and it definitely was. We did the Sunset Trough Canyon with the Superior Dining (4 course meal), and honestly picked this over the Club Service because the food sounded better. We took the scenic route from Morgantown to enjoy the drive and see if any fall colors were coming out, and arrived probably 45 minutes early. Everything was well organized for check-in and boarding and we departed promptly at 5 PM. The route takes you along the South branch of the Potomac River for an out and back trip. The area is known for eagle activity and nesting, and has spotters to inform people where the nests are and if there are eagles seen perched or flying. We were extremely lucky as we had major eagle sightings the entire trip, and I believe the official count at the end was two dozen (24). It's always a thrill to see one in the wild and this trip made it easy. They also point out different historical events and items that happened in the area, with much of that still in existence today. Service from all personnel on the trip was amazing, very courteous, knowledgeable and professional. Our attendant Kaleb and his fellow attendant (didn't catch her name) both did an awesome job of telling us what to expect, rules and guidelines for the trip, and actually serving our dinners. I won't go into detail what our meals were (photos will be posted) but the beef tenderloin and porkchop were AMAZING, as well as everything else. Beer and wine are served (pay at the end) in this level and the Club, and we had a couple each. If you go, use the option to see the trough on the gondola car as it's open and you get much better views than looking out the windows. They announce when it's time for your car, if you decide to do it. Would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting the experience. 5 🌟. Definitely would

I had the pleasure of going on the Trough Canyon tour in June, and it was truly an unforgettable experience from start to finish. We opted for the **Superior Dining** option, which included a **4-course meal**, and I must say, the food rivaled anything you’d expect from a high-end restaurant. Every dish was expertly prepared and beautifully presented. Our server, **Kaleb**, made the experience even more enjoyable. He was incredibly **attentive, courteous, and knowledgeable**, ensuring we were comfortable and well-informed throughout the ride. It was also a pleasant surprise when the **chef personally stopped by** our table to check on how we were enjoying the meal—a nice touch that made the dining feel extra special. The tour itself was just as impressive. The train goes through the stunning **Trough Canyon** twice. During the first pass, we enjoyed the first three courses of our meal while listening to a knowledgeable guide over the **PA system**, who shared **historical facts** and pointed out **eagle nests** along the way. On the second pass, we took advantage of the **open-air gondola**, which gave us a completely different and more immersive view of the canyon. The highlight for me was capturing a photo of a **bald eagle perched in a tree right next to the rail**—an absolutely breathtaking moment. Overall, I can’t recommend this tour enough. The combination of **scenic beauty, top-tier dining, and exceptional service** made it a standout experience that I would happily do again.

First time to experience this and it was excellent! My daughter had a blast looking at the mountains, river, and best of all eagles! We saw 6 eagles and 3 nests. The food was awesome, service was fantastic, everyone was super friendly and very caring how our experience was. I would definitely do this again. :)

I’ve ridden the Canyon excursion twice with my girlfriend, and we’ve had an amazing experience both times! The passenger cars are very comfortable, and the staff is amazing. They were incredibly helpful, and the food was so good! I’d go back just for the food! We also saw several eagles, and they were great at pointing out the nests so we had time to get our cameras ready.

This trip is like stepping back in time when life moved more slowly and the railroad played a central role in people's lives. The service is first class and the crew and staff are excellent. I have ridden 3 times this season. The full Petersburg run is a great way to spend your day and the Trough trip is great for first time riders. It is nice to take the trip a different times if the year so you can see how things change with the seasons.

We took our kids to the Wonderment Puppet Theater, and it was one of the most delightful experiences we’ve had as a family! The theater is cozy, welcoming, and full of creative charm. The puppetry was engaging and magical — our children were captivated from start to finish. The owner clearly pours so much love into every detail, making it a warm and personal experience rather than just a show. Afterward, the owner showed the kids backstage and let them play with the puppets!! Our kids couldn’t stop talking about their favorite parts and are already asking to go back. If you’re anywhere near Martinsburg, WV, this is absolutely worth a visit. A true treasure for families and children of all ages!

Rocking S Ranch, LLC in Winchester offers an exciting experience for horse enthusiasts with its trail rides through the foothills. History buffs will appreciate that the trails cover ground once traversed by Civil War calvaries. Visitors praise the friendly and informative owner, Bill, who provides clear instructions and makes beginners feel comfortable on their ride. The ranch also offers great local dining recommendations and beautiful scenery for a memorable experience.

Rocking S Ranch is the best horseback riding I've ever been to! I've been to multiple horseback riding trails throughout the Virginia region and Bill at the Rocking S Ranch make your experience the absolute best! My wife and I was visiting Hillbrook Inn to celebrate our 1st year Anniversary and I saw "Rocking S Ranch" as a good activity for us. I called to asked a few questions before our trip and Bill was absolutely friendly! I could hear his excitement and friendliness through the phone. Once we got our reservation all set up and finally met him at the ranch, it felt like I was meeting up with a friend by how welcoming and friendly Bill was. My wife, who hadn't ridden a horse before, instantly felt comfortable and was ready to get on a horse because of how welcoming BIll and his nephew Jr was. We got to ride Leroy and Timber. Two beautiful horses. We followed behind Bill as he told us local stories, funny jokes, and asked us about ourselves. It felt like we were all friends just going out for a nice horse ride. We felt like we lived here and we were neighbors! The scenic route we took was amazing and Bill did a great job at taking amazing photos of us with our phones. I've made this longer than it needed to be, but we absolutely loved it!

Truly, an amazing, down to earth, simple way to get away from your everyday stressors. My partner and I live right outside of DC and needed to get away. This was one of the first things that popped up on our 'to do list', and we are SO happy it did. We had such an amazing time not only riding with the horses, but the owner (Bill) himself was beyond kind, loved telling stories of his children, full of jokes... It was honestly everything we really needed at the time. Bill made it VERY clear that we were going to get some amazing photos, and boy did we. I cannot thank him enough for taking us on such an adventure that we didn't even know we needed. Worth EVERY penny.

The Inn At Charles Town Races

Hotel
Casinos & Gambling
Casinos
Unfussy rooms & suites, some with racetrack views, plus free breakfast & casino shuttle service.
This place is Beautiful, but the staff friendliness is out of this world. Everytime we walked past the desk we were greeted. Everyone was so nice. The lady cleaning was even selling that really nice smelling shampoo, body wash and conditioner to people. I have never stayed at a hotel where they did that for their guests. The hotel was super clean. The one issue I would say is the continental breakfast. It is by far the most lackluster thing I have ever seen. Hard boiled eggs with dry pastries, cereal and sadness. The rooms are spacious enough. You have a small in room mini fridge and a safe. The TV is okay, but who's there for TV anyway. The view outside is spectacular. Will be back!

Fairly simple Days Inn quality type hotel. No restaurant or bar. Breakfast was limited to toast and English muffins. Coffee was empty. Rooms are basic but clean. Warning - this is a smoking hotel. The only reason to stay here is if you are going to the races and casino - very convenient with a shuttle running every few minutes. I would stay here again to visit the track and casino.
David C — Google review
Upon arrival, my room was hot and nasty smelling. I turned the A/C on and it didn't work properly. I had it at the lowest setting of 60 degrees and it made the room just barely comfortable. One light was out in the bathroom which was visible to anyone, and yet it didn't get replaced. Otherwise, good stay.

The rooms are incredible. I lived in Las Vegas for 4 years and spent plenty of (probably too much) time in the different hotels. The cleanliness and moderness of these rooms are on par if not better than most on strip. The water pressure in the showers was awesome. Every member of the staff was friendly and courteous. I cannot say enough good things about the location. The only reason they get a 4 on location is that they are attached directly to the casino.
Jeffrey B — Google review
We have stayed here many times over the years and have always had a great stay. Willa Ann at the front desk is always friendly. The rooms are a great size and always comfortable. On this trip Nov. 3) we had a few issue with housekeeping. There were no tissues in our room upon check-in so we went to get a box and the young man at the check-in desk handed us an open box from under their counter saying he couldn't find boxes in their stock area. There were long black hairs all over the bathroom floor; we took care of this on our own with some antibacterial wipes and then put a towel on the floor. On Tuesday morning there wasn't enough body wash in the shower for the two of us, and finally I suggest they check their vacuum cleaners as our room and the hallway looked as though they hadn't been vacuumed. We did report everything at the front desk, and we look forward to an improved visit next time.

Staff is excellent. Checking in and out is super easy. It would be nice to have more seating for the breakfast time, possibly using the space in the lobby bar area with pub tables for breakfast time. Also, consideration for a coffee, tea, water (beverage area) in lobby for guests as only time for that beverage option is during breakfast hours. Happy guests equal happy casino players and returning guests. Thank you.

I booked a room online about a month ago for Friday the 14th! and it showed up on my app! Wednesday November 12th I didn’t see the reservation on my phone! I called.the casino at 8:12 on Wednesday to make sure I had a reservation and the girl said yes and that I had a 2 queen non smoking room! Unfortunately I did not get her name! I arrived Friday at 4:30 to find out I had no room! I was very upset! There were no rooms available! I was very upset as I just drive 4 hours! They told me that maybe there would be a cancellation! The 2 were very nice at the desk the girls name was Monique and I didn’t get the gentleman’s name! At 6:30 I got a call from Monique telling me they had a cancellation which I was so happy about! She told me I had to pay for the room which I wasn’t happy about as it should have been a Conor room! She told me that they would investigate this and if they see that I did have this conversation I would be reimbursed for the room! This is such a disappointment as I have stayed here over 22 times! They told me that when they brought up my account! I am waiting to here back from them!

We were at the casino on Sunday, November 2… I’m not sure what was going on in the Final Cut bar as there was a new bartender and the place was a mess - all the tables except one were covered in dirty dishes. She was talking to some people who were sitting at the bar instead of cleaning things up. I sat at the only clear table and she looked over at me and asked if I would be dining in the bar. I said yes, and she told me she’d be over to wipe off the table. Obviously, she was not in a rush because she continued to talk to the people at the bar. Then she disappeared and came back and began to bus the tables that were dirty. I was not given a menu or asked if I wanted a drink, nor was my table wiped down. I gave up and just left. It wasn’t busy, so there was no need for her to ignore me and provide awful service (well, really no service at all).

Art museum
The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is a cultural gem in the region, offering a diverse range of attractions for visitors. The museum features an extensive collection of 18th-century art, including decorative arts and fine art from Europe and America. Additionally, it houses a captivating assortment of miniature houses and rooms. One of its current highlights is the Steinlen: Cats exhibition, showcasing the work of artist Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen.
Wonderful museum rich in local history of the Shenandoah Valley. There are seasonal and annual art exhibits along with manicured gardens to explore. The 90 acres boasts more than 3 miles of walking trails and wildlife to explore. Prices are very reasonable at $25 per adult, $17 for seniors and $12 for students. Children under 12 are free. There are incredible artifacts from the early periods of the 1800s and history from earlier periods. There is a nice gift shop and bathrooms and the staff was wonderful and helpful. Great place to spend at least an hour or two inside and up to 3-4 hours walking the grounds. Highly recommend.

I’ve lived in Northern VA for decades, but was unaware of the museum until a friend recently recommended it. The museum is excellent, the grounds are beautiful, and Glen Burnie house was very cool. We will definitely be recommending it as a fun day trip from the DC area!

A++ what a gem. Definitely recommending to everyone because there is so much art/history inside, in addition to serene/well-marked ADA trails outside. Beautiful sculptures and birds around (couple deer too). I may have gotten lucky: on a lightly-drizzle rain Saturday it wasn’t very busy and patrons were super respectful/quiet. I’ll be back soon, many thanks to all involved 🙏

Absolutely love this place. Every time we've went they have had different spotlight on the arts. Last time was metal dinosaurs sculptures. Just amazing! Well worth the money. Buy online for a few dollars discount. Great on cooler days.

Small but very well curated museum with exhibits in history, flora, fauna, as well as temporary exhibits. They had Frida Calho when we visited. The gardens are also very well kept, and they had art installations. The top of the hill has a view. The pretty cows were a plus. But don't feed them!

This museum is AWESOME! If you have a chance to visit don't miss it. The historic house and gardens are also fantastic in addition to the museum proper. Plan to spend the day. Also check their website for special events and free days if you are on a budget. I just attended a concert in the drawing room this past weekend and can say that if you love live chamber music preformed by top rate musicians don't miss the chance to attend one of the next concerts offered this season on the MSV events website. A truly sublime experience!

Recently my husband and I have really started to enjoy going to museums and historical homes and gardens. Coming to visit Winchester this was a must see for us. The cost of admission also covered seeing the house and gardens. There are a few exhibits in the museum photography is not allowed but many areas you can. The house had a few rooms to walk thru on the main floor but really the gardens and walking areas were amazing! We were there late October so the gardens were not full bloom but no less beautiful of a place.

We have been members for years. We love the MSV!! We always bring out of town family when they come to visit. We especially love the gardens and the outdoor exhibits. The annual Christmas card and other mailings we receive through the year is a nice personal touch.

Cool off for the summer or heat up in the fall, even consider staying in the area for a weekend. #itriedlife

Beautifully situated with an incredible view of the valley. We visited briefly on a Saturday evening. The live music was nice to listen to as we sat and enjoyed the wine and the view. We ordered a bottle of Albarino which was very pleasant (I'd rate 3.7 out of 5) we also tasted the Petit Manseng, Viognier, and the Cabernet Sauvignon. Nice wines but I did like the Albarino best out of the four. They offer a small food menu which my family raved over, including gluten free options. Friendly staff. The view is fantastic! A wonderful place to stop and enjoy life with family and friends.

Beautiful views and a relaxing atmosphere, but the service could be improved. We weren’t provided with utensils or napkins, and different wines were poured into the same glass, which affected the tasting experience. Despite that, a couple of wines stood out — I brought a bottle home and would return to try others. A nice place to unwind, but there’s definitely room for improvement in hospitality.
Marina S — Google review
The place is worth a visit for the beautiful view and a glass of wine in a lovely setting. But for a place of this standing, the amount of horrible, unsustainable single-use cups, plates and cutlery is absolutely bizarre, and makes the place feel cheap and unwelcoming... I would have wanted to enjoy my food from a real plate, using real cutlery and having a real glass for my water.

We stopped by Bluemont Vineyard today for a quick lunch and a glass of wine. The vineyard sits high on a hill with a beautiful view overlooking the meadows and mountains — definitely the highlight of the visit. Outside food isn’t allowed, so we ordered from their menu — a charcuterie board (which was okay), a jumbo pretzel (huge and fun to share), and a baguette. For wine, we tried The Goat, a white wine that was just average. The setting is lovely and worth a visit for the view alone, but overall, the food and wine were fairly average.

We got in as they opened and by the time we left at 1 it was packed and for good reason, this place has beautiful views. Of course the charcuterie was good the burrata dish could have used a little more sweet on the peaches I felt were a bit bland. But overall great time! We had the red and white flights so got to sample a lot. Tons of seating to take in the views.
Roxy A — Google review
We’ve always loved Bluemont-we typically visit during summer months, but our visit to the vineyard this past Monday was really disappointing. The first young lady who helped with our wine flights was friendly, knowledgeable, and patient — though the pours were noticeably smaller than usual. When we went back inside to order individual glasses, things went downhill. My husband ordered the hot wine, and I asked about rosés, but the girl helping us didn’t know anything about the wines, alcohol content, or recommendations. When we also ordered a bottle, she didn’t offer glasses, a bucket, or ice until I asked. During our visit, we also ordered the charcuterie board, flatbread, and meatballs — all of which came with no utensils or napkins. I had to get up, go inside, and find someone in the back just to ask for them. There was only one waiter servicing all the outdoor guests, even though there were several staff members inside. For the amount of money spent, basic service and attentiveness shouldn’t be optional. Now that they’re using QR codes for food orders, it only makes sense to include the wine options there too. Having guests order food from their phone but then get up to order wine in person makes no sense — especially when there are staff inside who could easily bring it out. When we went in to order wine, someone took our seats overlooking the view because they assumed we were finished (even though our dirty dishes were still there). Integrating both food and wine into the QR system would make things much smoother for guests and staff. We were celebrating my husbands birthday and it didn’t pass the vibe check this visit around. We went to the brewery next doors afterwards and had a blast! The staff was welcoming, knowledgeable, and friendly.

We stopped in on Tuesday 10/21/25. My interaction with the one of the young ladies working was really a refreshing breath of fresh air. If I’m not mistaken, her name is Amber. She offered us some really useful information about Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. Her upbeat attitude along with the helpful info given (one example was the fact that there is only one gas station in the park, so we made sure to fill up before entering the park), really set us off on the right foot. Thank you, Amber! We left with a smile and a good feeling that comes from a genuinely friendly and helpful interaction.

Skyline Caverns, located in Front Royal, VA, is a natural wonder boasting rare rock formations and anthodites that are 60 million years old. Discovered in 1937 by Walter S. Amos, the caverns offer guided one-hour tours daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. Visitors can explore the 1 and 1/8th mile-long underground trail with a knowledgeable guide and marvel at the white spiky rock formations known as anthodites.
AMAZING experience! Tour guy was awesome. Loved his dad jokes, overall personality and how kind he came off. Great guy to educate people. Very patient. Gift shop has a lot of cool things. Recommend checking everything out first before choosing or you’ll end up with your arms full with stuff. They are priced very well. 10/10 recommend and I will probably return even though I live in Illinois.

Visiting the Skyline Caves was a wonderful travel experience. The unique stalactites created a beautiful picture under the wonderful color combination. The tour guide explained in detail. Unfortunately, my English is not good and my understanding is limited. I bought a refrigerator magnet in the gift shop as a permanent souvenir. I will recommend it to my friends who come to visit.

Review: Skyline Caverns We recently visited Skyline Caverns with our 15-month-old son, after reading several Google reviews that it could be a good outing for families with kids and strollers. Here’s how our experience stacked up. What we liked Guided tour format**: The tour guide-led approach adds structure and storytelling to the cavern exploration, which is nice for older kids and curious adults. Cavern scenery**: The caverns themselves are impressive to see and offer a fun environment to explore and imagine. What to expect (and caveats) Cost and value**: The experience was over $50 for two adults, with our son admitted for free. Depending on your family size, this can add up, so factor in the overall value for younger children. Accessibility for little ones**: The tour involves 61 total steps and an uneven path, which can be challenging for toddlers or infants. We used a wrap to carry our son to prevent falls, but it required extra effort and attention. Timing**: While some reviews mention around an hour, our tour lasted closer to 1 hour and 30 minutes. It felt longer than anticipated for a small child, especially in a dim environment. Other families**: We observed that many of the younger kids in our group (ages roughly 6 and under) had a harder time with the length and lighting. A number of children appeared older than our son and seemed more comfortable with the pace and environment. Recommendations If you have very young children (like a 15-month-old), consider whether you’re prepared for a longer, dimly lit walk with uneven terrain and several stairs. A stroller may be impractical due to the stairs and narrow passages, so a carrier or wrap is often necessary. Plan for extra time and a slower pace if you’re traveling with toddlers. The guided nature is helpful, but it can be tiring for little ones. If possible, verify current pricing and tour duration before you go, as policies and experiences can vary by day. For families with older kids (roughly 4–12+), Skyline Caverns seems better aligned with their curiosity and stamina, given the length and stairs. Bottom line Skyline Caverns is a worthwhile cavern experience with beautiful formations and a solid guided tour. However, for families with very young children, it can be a long, uneven, and dimly lit outing that isn’t ideal for the youngest in your party. If your kids are older and mobile, you’ll likely enjoy the adventure more. For families with toddlers, weigh the costs and physical demands carefully, or consider alternative activities that are more stroller-friendly.
Cryslen R — Google review
First time visiting a cavern. Be sure to wear a jacket or sweater—it gets very chilly inside—and comfortable shoes, as the pavement is uneven in some areas. We discovered this cavern while driving home from the Natural Bridge. My 8- and 9-year-old boys really enjoyed the tour. Some parts of the path had handrails, while others did not, so keep that in mind if you need extra support. If you’re uncomfortable in tight or enclosed spaces, this may not be the best activity for you. Our tour guide was engaging and even funny at times, which added to the experience. However, the cashier at the gift shop wasn’t very friendly, which was a bit disappointing. There are plenty of souvenirs to choose from & picnic tables outside if you want to have a snack before getting back on the road.

Most colorful and unique cavern I've been to yet. The tour is guided and takes about an hour. Our tour guide, Beckett, was great. He was very informative and allowed for us to take our time to take photos and check everything out. Special highlight - this is one of a few places in the world which hosts anthodites. This was my first time ever seeing them, and I must say, they were pretty neat! Fernando the "cavern fish" - if you will, was a great surprise too. 10/10 Recommend.

Excellent. Well worth a visit. We went after doing the Skyline Drive. Our guide Courtney was excellent. Very knowledgeable and engaging, we learned lots. Fascinating. Large gift shop. Easy parking, suitable for RVs. The tour is an hour, no need to book just turn up and book in. My sons, 12 and 14 and I really enjoyed.

A lot of great wines to sample and buy by the glass or bottle. Beautiful country setting with great views. Not crowded at all during the week. Sara was our host, bartender, and server. To say she was running her butt off the entire time we were there is an understatement. She was a pleasure to chat with and is quite knowledgeable about the wines they have, as well as wine in general. We also had lunch and found the food to be well worth the price, especially the chicken salad on the croissant.

This has been our go to place in the valley for wine for a long time. The staff is always knowledgeable and friendly. They definitely have one of the best food menus around with such a satisfying charcuterie board. Views are unlimited, dog friendly, and we always leave with an additional bottle of wine for our collection. I would highly recommend anyone to visit the vineyard, even the dogs leave happy.

My birthday weekend in VA was highlighted by a trip to Cave Ridge. I was so happy I chose this winery to celebrate my birthday with friends. The wine flights were really good and ample wine was provided. The food options are minimal but everything was still very tasty and complemented the wines. I purchased 2 mulled wine kits and loved making them at home. I wish I had purchased more kits. However, I will be back to this wonderful winery.

We enjoyed most of the wines in the flight and really liked the Pinot Noir. The staff was really friendly and knowledgeable. It was a cool evening and we would have liked to sit outside but were put off by the $15 charge for use of the fire pit. We sat inside upstairs and the fruit flies were everywhere, so we relocated to the upper deck. Water was not offered which we are accustomed to at other wineries. Nice views and still a good experience.

Barrel Oak Winery and Brewery is a modern estate that offers both wine and beer, making it a perfect destination for couples with different preferences. The venue features a tap house, tasting clubs, and hosts frequent events. It's known for its dog-friendly atmosphere, offering special treats for furry friends and even providing plastic pools for them during hot weather. Visitors can enjoy a nice selection of beers in addition to the tasty wines available.
I did not know what to expect from this spot, but I was very impressed. Their operations and organization is impressive. I’d have to be extremely picky to find cons about my experience. Let’s first start with the wines. Their new sparkling rosé is something everyone needs. It was so good, I was ready to purchase it on the spot, but it’s not ready for release yet (they are hoping it will be in October). Before I even tasted it, it was fragrant of watermelon and strawberry. I’m not even a watermelon fan, but this wine!!! Best rosé I’ve ever tried, no exaggeration. I am very indifferent about Chardonnays, but their stainless steel one was excellent. I was also ready to purchase it, but will when I come back to get the sparkling rosé. The assistant winemaker told us they find that people who don’t usually like Chardonnay like that one. It had a hint of sweetness and I loved it!! Their yuzu ginger seltzer was nice and light and refreshing. Will also be purchasing when I come back. I can’t give an objective opinion about their beer because I truly do not like beer (like if you see me with a beer in my hand, send help). They also have frozen drinks: a virgin strawberry daiquiri and a mango piña colada. Delicious but very sweet. I loved learning about their winemaking process as well their beer production. Their new winemaker, Jeremy, is certainly doing an amazing job. He came in 4 years ago and completely revamped their wines. The new owners, Ken and Kavelle Bajaj, have owned Barrel Oak since 2022 and originally are from India. We met Ken, and he was very nice and appreciative for us coming to visit. They also have a new Brewmaster and his name is Jin. He was great to talk with about the brewing process. Everyone on the staff was so nice and it was a lovely day here. They have food here too like empanadas and pizza that I thought were pretty good too. It was packed there for a reason. It’s an excellent place perfect for birthdays, bridal activities, any special occasions, or just wanting a chill and fun day in VA wine country.

(+) nice atmosphere, decent beer prices, decent amount of outdoor/indoor seating (-) food pricing, many scary bees in outdoor area Stopped by after our hike as it was on the way home and had good reviews. Their brewery and winery are located in the same building- so park anywhere you see parking. They had lots of indoor and outdoor seating available- indoor was cool (which was a nice escape from the sun), they had a hybrid indoor/outdoor area (it was nice - but not cool like the inside), and then an outside area. Plenty of seating was available when we first got there around 12:30 but then it started filling up- some tables were reserved. I got the “Pearway to Heaven Asian Pear Sour Ale” and my friend got the “Wise Oak IPA”. We both enjoyed ours. I’m not really a beer person but felt that this was refreshing and crisp. The Bavarian pretzel came with cheese and mustard, which was tasty but with a price point of $16. The person who started our tab was nice but when we asked for a taste to try to decide which one we wanted, she made a comment “I guess so since we are not busy yet”.

We recently had our wedding at this beautiful location. We had been here a few times before and loved the beautiful scenery, good food, and good drinks. When we decided to get marries within 3 weeks, this was the first location that came to mind. It's about an hour outside of DC, so it was convenient for our guests. Christina answered the inquiry and immediately got to work. She saw our vision and with such short notice, it was executed perfectly. Christina is kind, professional, and damn good at what she does. From helping decorate the cake, manage the 5year old flower girls, and being a DJ, us and our guests were so impressed! Christina, thank you again for making this so special for us. The rest of the staff was amazing and kind. The grounds are beautifully maintained. The catering was amazing, and the selection of beer and wine is perfect, as there is something for everyone. Thank you again to this wonderful business. We are so happy to have had our special day close to home so we can visit easily and make more memories. -Alex and Nelson

I can't say enough great things about this place. Yesterday my family and friends gathered at Barrel Oak to celebrate my birthday. The entire team here was incredibly kind and accommodating. We had a reservation for a big group, but upon us letting them know that my grandma would have issues going up stairs, they offered us the outside pavilion (it ended up being perfect). The views and the vibes are unmatched. Thank you for being a part of our story (we also got married here a few years ago!)

Four of us did a wine tasting and had 2 pizzas and their tostadas. We loved their special to get 1 pizza and 2 glasses of wine. We each brought a bottle to take home and share; we really enjoyed both their food and wine. Next time we will try their beer side. They had plenty of space (we enjoyed the loft) and the views were good.

The Car and Carriage Caravan Museum is a captivating destination for anyone intrigued by the history of transportation. Nestled near the stunning Luray Caverns, this museum showcases an extensive collection of over 140 antique vehicles, including vintage cars and carriages that date back to as early as 1725. Among its treasures are remarkable pieces like an 1892 Mercedes-Benz and a charming 1908 Baker Electric, all in pristine running condition.
Right next to the caverns, we also visited the Car and Carriage Caravan Museum — and honestly, it ended up being the highlight of our entire visit. We had just come from the caverns, and the museum is located nearby. At the time we went, entry to the museum was included with our caverns ticket, which was a fantastic bonus. Now, I’m not a huge car museum enthusiast, and I can’t say how it compares to others out there, but I genuinely enjoyed it. The museum isn’t massive, but it has a great variety of cars from different eras and brands, and the display is really well put together. It was fascinating, and even for someone like me — who doesn’t know much about cars — it was a total treat. I had a great time, took some awesome photos. If you’re planning to visit the caverns, I definitely recommend stopping by this museum too. Hopefully, like us, your ticket will also include access — it’s absolutely worth checking out.

The Car and Carriage Caravan Museum was an unexpected highlight of our visit to Luray Caverns! The collection of vintage vehicles is truly impressive—beautifully preserved and displayed, with everything from elegant horse-drawn carriages to early automobiles and classic cars. You can really appreciate the craftsmanship and history behind each one. It was a pleasant surprise that admission to the museum is included with the Luray Caverns ticket. It made the experience feel like even better value. One of the coolest facts we learned was that all but two of the vehicles are still fully operational! It would be amazing if they held a parade or special event once a year to get them out on display in motion—that would take the experience to the next level. Whether you’re a car enthusiast or just enjoy a glimpse into the past, this museum is well worth the visit. Definitely don’t skip it while you’re at the caverns!

This place is very cool outside of Lou ray caverns. They have a lot of old cars. Some really vintage pieces. Some million dollar cars, lots of old schools from the beginning, and some pretty cool stuff to see around this museum. A lot of stuff. I didn't know about very interesting. I must go.

This is a fantastic opportunity to see cars and other forms of transportation used over a hundred years ago—beautifully preserved and maintained. The vintage cars are truly classy and timeless; I was amazed by their design, quality, and the fact that they still look so flawless. Who wouldn’t want a car that has aged so gracefully? I absolutely loved seeing them. If you’re a vintage car enthusiast, this is a place you should definitely visit at least once.

The staff is friendly. The cars are beautiful. It’s amazing to see how far cars have come. I think I would honestly prefer to actually still drive some of the cars they have there. Rolls Royce, Bugatti, Dodge, Ford, Chevrolet. After walking thru the caverns. You can head into the car museum from the gift shop.
Jason G — Google review
Admission included with the caverns tour. Awesome selection of modes of transportation throughout the years. Highly recommend to those who enjoy cars. Has local history scattered about the displays.
Amanda E — Google review
This is a nicely sized car museum! A decent variety and some things I've not seen in other transportation museums. Doesn't take too long to walk through although it takes more time if you stop to read every information plaque. Glad it was included with admission.
N W — Google review
The car museum is a must-visit for anyone who loves automobiles and history! It offers a fascinating journey through the evolution of cars, showcasing beautifully preserved classic and vintage models. The exhibits are well-organized, and you can truly appreciate the craftsmanship and innovation of each era. It’s a great place to learn about the historical significance of automobiles and how they have shaped transportation over time. Definitely worth a visit!

Nature & Parks
Luray Caverns, located in Luray, is a massive underground lair featuring 140-ft. natural columns, colorful stalactites, and brick walkways. It is a U.S. Natural Landmark known for its variety of formations and vibrant natural colors.
We had a really great time at Luray Caverns and here’s a friendly tip. If you have a Giant Food card and buy your tickets at the door, you get 50% off your second ticket. We took advantage of that and it was definitely worth it. The walk from the parking lot to the entrance is a bit of a hike, so wear comfortable shoes. I hadn’t been in years and I was surprised to see there are no steps to enter anymore. It’s now a sloped walkway that takes you right into the cavern, which makes it much more accessible. Once you’re inside, it’s dark, damp in some spots, and probably about a mile and a half long. You’ll get a nice little workout walking through, but it’s so interesting to see what nature created underground. The formations are fascinating and it’s wild to think this was discovered back in the late 1800s. If you haven’t been in a while, it’s definitely worth going back. Wear good shoes, take your time, and enjoy it. Luray Caverns is one of those places that reminds you how amazing the natural world really is.

I've waited to go to Luray Caverns for years and it didn't disappoint. You follow a very clearly marked, paved, lit path, so you can't get lost, as long as you follow it. They have numbered signs throughout the caverns to highlight amazing sites. You will receive a map to explain each numbered sight. It's appropriate for anyone who would like to see a breathtaking sight made by nature, can follow a path, and make the trek. It takes about an hour or two to walk through the whole thing, depending on how much you like to stop, take pictures, or rest if need be. It's like nothing I'd ever seen before. Everyone should experience this national beauty at least once in their lives.

We wanted to bring our grandkids to the caverns to show them this very natural and beautiful part of our Earth. This is the largest cave system on the East Coast and one of the largest in the world. You will see stalactites, stalagmites, and other unique formations. The whole cavern is paved with a railing to hold onto if needed and easy to navigate. They provide a brochure to help You see their unique formations like Dream Lake and the Giant Redwood. Discovered in 1878 they have onset up so you can easily complete a self-guided tour. We were fortunate enough to meet one of the cave guides Scott who was amazing and very entertaining. He pointed out a variety of special features like “Virginia bacon” and “Jaba the Hut” that we would not have seen without him. We also purchased tickets for the kids to do the Ropes Course and they loved it. The only bad part is the cafe, their food is beyond horrible but if you are desperate to eat something it is what it is. The ice cream sandwiches we bought had a sell thru date of July 2025 and we visited in October.

Luray Caverns is such a beautiful and unique spot which is worth the visit. The location is easy to get to, surrounded by gorgeous mountain views and plenty of parking. It’s a great family destination with something for everyone. The caverns themselves are incredible to see in person-massive underground chambers filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. The lighting highlights all the natural formations beautifully. The guided tour was informative without feeling too long, and the kids were completely fascinated. Above ground, there’s just as much to enjoy! The Car and Carriage Museum is full of vintage vehicles that both kids and adults will love, and the Garden Maze is a fun challenge that keeps everyone entertained. It’s an easy and fun day trip for families, and one of those places that feels special no matter your age. Highly recommend if you’re anywhere near the Shenandoah area.
Courtney G — Google review
We have been to a lot of caverns in the United States, even mammoth caves. And this is much more magical than any other cave system. We have been in this is a very cool 54° underneath the earth with some beautiful walking paths. And a self graded tour that took about an hour. We absolutely loved it. We will return this place is great. The city is small. This is the main attraction and it is worth going through the city to see it
LAND R — Google review
We had such a great experience at Luray Caverns! The employees were incredibly kind and helpful from start to finish, especially the guy at the front desk. I really appreciated how dog-friendly they were. They even have a kennel and kept our puppy entertained while we explored the cave, which made it so much easier to relax and enjoy the visit. The caverns themselves were absolutely stunning, but the staff’s friendliness and care truly made the experience special. Highly recommend!

Worth the price of admission, the caverns are a great experience, but that is not the only feature the toy museum is small but interesting, the auto museum was spectacular. The heritage village was very interesting. For a small extra cost, walking the hedge maze was so much fun.

Great site. We all loved it. My kids are 13/11/7 and were very impressed. A very nice tour. In the general admission included an old car museum. It's a bit small but all the cars are well kept and its a very nice museum as well. They loved it too. Recommended.

Nestled in the Shenandoah mountains, Copper Fox Distillery offers a unique experience for whiskey enthusiasts. The distillery's smoky applewood-aged whiskey is a standout feature, and visitors can enjoy tours and tastings of their premium flights. The rustic space pays homage to the building's roots, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, the outdoor cocktail garden by the river provides a relaxing setting to savor their exceptional spirits.
It’s a very nice distillery you would want to come and sit by the creek enjoying the tranquil sound of the water running. It’s so soothing after a long hike. Get some refreshments or drinks. Hubby says the cocktails are very very good! 👍

If you’re coming to Shenandoah, Luray, or anywhere close, make Copper Fox a must do visit. We started with the tour, which was both informative and entertaining, and then enjoyed a rest by the water. The ambiance inside the distillery is casual and fun, plenty of seating to relax and enjoy a drink, or on a nice day, sit outside. The service was excellent. As for the whisk(e)y, top notch. Even if you’re not a fan, the enjoyment of sampling a flight and comparing notes and differences between them is a fun time. Their charcuterie board was excellent and a great way to slow down the flight and cocktails and enjoy a moment of peace outside. Two thumbs up!

This place is absolute hidden gem. We stopped by after the hikes in Shenandoah National Park. Super unique place with the stream of its backyard. We ordered a whiskey flight of 4 and the Whiskey Sour, I personally love the whiskey sour very much and very relaxing and refreshing experience.

Very impressed. The nose and flavor on the Copper Fox Original Rye blew us away. My buddy Bob’s been a bourbon guy for years, and even he said it was one of the best pours he’s ever had. The depth and smoothness are almost impossible to describe — it’s that good. Friendly people, great setting, and clearly a distillery that cares about every drop they make.

Great cocktails with a fun, rustic, indoors space and cute river running through the back. Definitely worth a visit.
Lauren B — Google review
Small distillery at the very end of a mini entertainment district, which you wouldn't expect from the main road. Very homey and comfy inside, lots of wood and warm decor, playlist of bluegrass sonds. The tasting of four quarter pours at 10$ is a good way to try their style. It's not bourbon, it's whisky: they are not limited in the grains or the barrels. So they're quite creative. Although the description provides no age statement (unfortunately), it's all quite easy to sip, nothing harsh (not a very long finish either). Fun to try if you're around.

Great cocktails, this refurbished barn has a unique charm. I didn't get to enjoy a drink in the back, but they have a beautiful little patio set up by a quiet Brook. Skip the corporate breweries and come here

Wonderfully cozy tasting room to sit and enjoy seasonal cocktails in on a rainy day. Also excellent seasonal drinks. I could've stayed here next to the crackling woodburning stove for hours. Got two seasonal drinks, the Hot Autumn Harvest (apple cider, pumpkin butter, cinnamon stick, single malt) and Cinnamon cream soda with foxfire and vanilla orange slices.

Early Mountain Vineyards, nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Madison, offers breathtaking views and exceptional Virginia wines. After a scenic hike to nearby attractions like Hawksbill Summit or South River Falls, visitors can indulge in delicious food from the full kitchen on-site. The property's beauty is unparalleled, with an inviting outdoor area and separate 'Meadows' menu. While reservations are recommended for busy days, the overall experience promises delightful wine and attentive service.
Amazing lunch at the restaurant! We came for the wine tasting and were blown away by the delectable food (quite reasonably priced in our opinion). Every dish we tasted had an interesting and well-balanced combination of ingredients and flavors. My absolute favorite was the strawberry gazpacho which was beautifully presented (photo attached) and had a delicious mix of different textures (softness of the strawberry puree/buttermilk vs. crunchiness of the radish/cucumber). Also a special mention for the cheese plate - great to see them showcasing products from Virginia, and all three cheeses were delightful in their own way. Other than the food, the restaurant itself is lovely and provides different seating options - airy and impeccably furnished inside, with a more casual atmosphere on the patio. We chose the latter as it has a view of the vineyards and had a very pleasant time. My only minor comment is that the service could be a little more refined for a place delivering such high quality food. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Early Mountain and highly recommend!

We recently visited Early Mountain Winery to celebrate my birthday, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The food was fantastic—beautifully prepared and flavorful. I started with the pan-seared rockfish minestrone, which was incredibly good. I have some sensitivities to certain seasonings and noticed a slight throat itch, so just to be safe, our amazing waitress graciously offered to bring me a different dish. I tried the roasted gold bar squash, and honestly, it blew me away. I’ve never had squash prepared that way—tender, perfectly seasoned, with just the right touch of Parmesan Reggiano. We also shared the marinated olives and cheese, and everything was fresh and well balanced. The wine flight we tried included the Madison County Chardonnay 2022, Petit Manseng 2022, Capstone Cabernet Franc 2021, and Eluvium 2021. Each wine had something special to offer depending on your taste. I typically lean toward dry reds, but my husband and I both really loved the Petit Manseng—it had the perfect balance of flavor, texture, and acidity. We ended up getting a bottle and took the rest home to enjoy with Sunday lunch—it was just as delicious chilled the next day. The service and hospitality were top-notch. Every staff member was warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming—even just walking past, everyone greeted us. That attention to guests really sets the tone and shows how much they care about the experience. The views are absolutely stunning, and next time we plan to sit outside to soak them in even more. The ambiance was perfect for a special occasion or a relaxing date day—we even brought along a couples game to enjoy while we sipped and took in the atmosphere. Kudos to the staff, the chef, the winemakers, and management for creating such a beautiful, thoughtful experience. We’ll definitely be back soon!

I visited this winery last year but wasn't able to enjoy much of the property because a private wedding was going on and it was raining. I returned this weekend and am happy I did. It's upscale but inviting, not stuffy at all. They have a full service restaurant on site with delicious food. I had the fusilli pasta and a red wine flight. Both were very good. The grounds are beautiful so sitting on the patio would be perfect on a nice day. All the tables outside were taken so I ate inside. The tasting room is very big and beautiful.

We aren't sure what we expected, but from the moment we walked in, we were absolutely in awe of Early Mountain Vineyards. We reserved a table outside for lunch on our way home from a long weekend trip, and we couldn't have been more pleased. The setting truly lives up to its self-description: a pristine property nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The tasting flights of wine were perfect—we found the selection to be earthy and bold, a wonderful expression of Virginia wine. The food was phenomenal as well; we ordered several small plates which were perfect for sharing among our group. Highly recommend this as a truly beautiful, relaxing, and memorable stop!

food was divine. service was great. wines were good but not life-changing. prices are about 25% more than they oughta be, but you're paying for vibes. all in all, a wonderful lunch amid gorgeous fall scenery that definitely stung at $250 for 2. wish they were open later because that price is easier to swallow for a dinner date.

This was truly a chef's kiss experience! My wife and I came to celebrate her birthday and we had an amazing time. Maggie our waitress really took care of us. She was super friendly, helped us narrow down what to eat, and helped us select which flights to try. We landing on getting the cold crab salad, bison tartar, mussels, and bison rib eye and they were all soooo good! Seriously, so damn good! I think we did the Elevate flight with 2 whites and 2 reds and we really enjoyed all of them. We're typically reds folk, but the Madison Chardonay got us. At the end of our feast we walked away joining the wine club and getting 3 bottles to take with us back home. In addition to the food and the stunning atmosphere we also really appreciated the diversity of all the guests dining there. You dont always know what to expect when traveling to smaller towns and cities, but my wife and I felt fully comfortable and respected. We gonna be back... next weekend to bring my mother in law when shes visiting.
Danica S — Google review
This is a great place to come on a weekend. Be aware, it can be packed. We were able to make a reservation the day before and got an indoor seating. The vineyard is beautiful and the choices are really nice. The food was amazing as well and they offer different flights as well. I would highly recommend Ahi Tuna. After feasting on some vine and food, you can grab a glass of vine from outside and enjoy the open meadows.

Upscale winery experience. Their indoor and outdoor are immaculate, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the wines and made excellent recommendations. Their menu was absolutely delicious and paired well with the wines. We came with our dog too and they were so kind and always checked in to make sure there was enough water for her too. I would recommend this winery to anyone visiting the area!

Nestled in the picturesque landscape, Stone Mountain Vineyards offers a serene retreat with breathtaking views. The winery provides an impressive selection of wines and invites visitors to bring along a picnic to savor on the deck while admiring the stunning scenery. Guests can also indulge in cheese boards and purchase bottles of wine to enjoy amidst the tranquil surroundings. The venue is dog-friendly, complete with water bowls for furry companions.
Such beautiful views at this winery. The gravel road makes it somewhat hard to get to it, but it is so worth it. The wine selection is decent and I would go back for 3 of the 8 options we tried. The warm bread and cheese were great too! I really loved the views and the day we visited there was also live music. The artist is from Harrisonburg and has a good selection of covers and his own works. Very nice experience overall.

Great views! Great wine! The drive up the mountain is worth it. If you're looking for a little adventure I'd highly recommend this winery.
Justin D — Google review
Beautiful views but wss closed today. Was allowed to go through and view the building and mountain, but unable to do tastings. Two grapes/wines provided due to cool temperatures at 1800 foot altitude: Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. Chardonnay is stored in both stainless steel and barrels. Stone Mountain has been there 26 years, but the current owner bought it 9 years ago. Totally recommend visiting because of the views but highly recommend 4x4 vehicle and slow careful driving as the road is gravel and treacherous.

The ladies working the tasting room were very kind. Flattop mountain has its own vibe and the views are amazing. Come for the views, stay for the wines!

Great wines. Amazing views, if you can deal with the drive up the mountain...
Jason D — Google review
I consider Stone Mountain Vineyards my winery retreat. My friends and I come with a picnic to sit on the deck and enjoy a day of watching the view. We call it our “hike”….from the car to the winery. We purchase one of their cheese boards and a bottle of wine. They allow dogs- which is wonderful. They have water bowls out. I try to not go when it’s busy. That’s just me. They say the weekdays are slower than the weekends. Even when busy it is still relaxing. Note- the drive up….the last bit is very much on a dirt gravel road and narrow in many spots. If you meet a car on it, one of you will have to back up aways.

Hidden on top of the mountain and with a very elegant and specious tasting room. Wine selection is quite tasty and the view from the balcony is worth the drive especially at sunset. Believe me, one of the most beautiful vineyards in the area if not in the state. Totally overlooked and underrated. Go there, you will love it. Update 10/3/2021: The staff was beyond friendly and inviting! The views are breathtaking! And the wine incredible! We’d totally recommend the win slushee! Truly a hidden gem of Virginia!! Most of the times it could be very peaceful and if you sit at the edge of the deck that was built back in 2019 it is even better. Remember to bring your own picnic. Dogs are super welcome and please remember to great the local dogs. They are very sweet.

I'll start by saying getting here is not an easy drive. 2 mile narrow gravel road with many blind corners. However, once you arrive you can relax and enjoy the breathtaking view and nice wine. Our favorite was Tribute. We purchased a flight, which includes four pours for $18 and sipped it on the large deck overlooking the vineyards.

What a treat! We love going to Kentucky to try different distilleries so was thrilled to find a high quality distillery in the central Virginia area.
