Theaters
Barter Theatre, located in Abingdon, Virginia, is a historic theater with a rich legacy and outstanding performances. Established in 1933, it is one of the longest-running professional theaters in the United States. The theater's name originates from its original barter system during the Great Depression. It has been associated with renowned actors like Gregory Peck. Visitors can enjoy five well-produced plays over a weekend at both the Barter Theatre and its sister venue, The Smith Stage.
We have not seen a Barter Theatre production that we didn’t enjoy. The Million Dollar Quartet had the house rocking. The theatre troupe is accomplished, professional, and always on their A-game. The Barter complex includes two theatres, one the historic original and the second, a modern intimate playhouse. There are no bad seats in my opinion but be aware neither is spacious. I highly recommend adding the post-show discussions with the players when they are offered. The players freely share about all aspects of the play and being an actor in a regional theatre. Come and enjoy!

My mom, sister and I have been going to Barter since I was a child. Now, I get to share it with my children! It is such a joy everytime we go. The cast and production of every show they do demonstrates awe inspiring creativity and passion for the stage and for the audience. Barter Theatre isn’t just a good show - it’s a tradition!

This was my frist time attending, and I was not disappointed, it was a fantastic experience. Great play. " murder for two " We even met the actors after the show, they were friendly, even when we knew they were tired. Great experience! Will definitely go back!

We travel in an RV all over the U.S. and happened to stop in Abingdon, a place we'd never heard of, but happy to explore. We love plays and we were fortunate to get tickets to see "Murder for Two." It was so good! The actors are incredibly talented and the show is hilarious. If you can, be sure to see this fabulous performance. Thank you, Abingdon and Barter Theatre, for the wonderful memories from these two Floridians.

Went to a 2:00 show of A Few Good Men. Excellent play! Very professionally done. Nice nostalgic atmosphere. I didn't purchase anything from the snack bar but a lot of people did. Will definitely go back.
Randy H — Google review
What a beautiful venue! This well preserved hall is worth the trip to Abingdon. The lobby and theater have stunning detail that you find in few concert halls. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We saw "The Play That Goes Wrong" and the cast and crew was very talented and professional. The entire town made for a great visit, so we hope to return and catch another show soon.
Chris R — Google review
Watched Anne of Green Gables today and it blew me away ! I drove over 2 1/2 hrs and it was my first time at the theater and all I can say is wish I could have seen it twice ! Anne was my favorite with amazing acting and singing and then I loved the relationship between her and Diana Berry! The theater was amazing. The people were so kind and friendly and the parking was great to deal with! Only downside is I wish the seats were a little bit bigger so you’d have more room to kinda stretch out and be comfortable, but that definitely will not stop me from ever going back!
Corey S — Google review
I took my wife and step daughter to see Muder for Two today. The show was excellent. The actors and the production were top notch as always. We laughed through the entire performance. Would recommend this play and give it, the actors and staff all five stars. We are planning to attend additional shows in the future.

Adventure Damascus & Sundog Outfitter Bike Rental & Shuttle Co is a top choice for bike rentals and shuttle services in the area. They efficiently fit a large group with bikes and provided kits for flats before safely shuttling them to the summit. Customers, including families with young children, found the staff to be friendly, helpful, and accommodating throughout their experience. The shop itself is described as cute and inviting, offering various items for purchase.
We decided late in the day to do the Virginia Creeper Trail. Another business recommended that we call here as most shuttle busses had ended service for the day. I spoke to Carlton and he told us to come on over. He held one of his drivers and assisted us with renting bikes. He was incredibly kind and helpful. Tucker, our driver, was very kind and informative. We enjoyed conversing with him as he drove us up the mountain. We are so very grateful to these fine gentlemen and this establishment for helping to create wonderful family memories! I HIGHLY recommend this business!

We were welcomed by some of the nicest people today! We did the Virginia Creeper trail and the whole process was so smooth and easy we walked in got fitted for our bikes walked out loaded up in the van and off we went. The driver was super nice & told some history on the way up! This was one of the best experiences we’ve had this year! Thank you guys so much we will definitely recommend you guys to all of our families & friends❤️

Great bike ride rental and shuttle service to Whitetop Virginia. This is in the Mount Rogers National Forest and they service the Virginia Creeper Trail.

The staff at adventure Damacus were super friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I had a really nice time with my kids here and the trail was so beautiful (we did the shuttle and bike on creeper trail)
Paul M — Google review
Highly recommend. They had more time slots than other places. Very friendly and easy check in process. Answered all of our questions. We got a great history of the area by the driver on the way up. All bikes were in great shape.
Dan P — Google review
Rented a bike to ride the creeper trail. Rode 32 miles no problem with the bike. The man there were very helpful making sure everything went will with the bike before we left and ask how it rode after. Very nice people and best price we found for bike rental.. Would not hesitate to rent from here again.
BlessedMom3x — Google review
Great service and great location along the VA creeper trail. Our shuttle driver was very kind and informative. The bikes were in good working condition and we did not experience any mechanical issues on the trail. We were given a cruiser style bike, as were most in our party, although they have a few mountain bikes available as well. The bike had a comfy seat and riding position, but we would have appreciated a front shock for a few of the slightly rougher portions of the trail. The shop was busy but they worked us through quickly. Parking was limited and required a little patience but we were assisted in finding a spot on location. The store had a good variety of clothing, gear, and other stuff and was fun to browse while waiting.
John G — Google review
We had a great experience. They fitted us for bikes that we were renting, the shuttle was enjoyable as our guide told us about the history. they provided helmets and the bikes had a holder for a water bottle, which was perfect. They even gave us a flat fixer bag and put it on my husband’s bike just in case.all of the staff were so kind and welcoming.

Saint Marys Church

Episcopal church
Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
St. Mary's is a beautiful church. The church is left open 24 hours a day for people to visit and worship. The frescoes and stained glass windows are beautiful. There is a lovely step stone path as you approach the front of the church. The front door sticks a bit but it does open. When you enter the vestibule there is a button that plays a recording inside the sanctuary to the right of the door into the sanctuary. There are a lot of stained glass windows. They are mostly from the 1970's and 1980's. I really like the one that has the little children coming to Jesus and one of the kids is wearing tennis shoes. The recording provides a lot of info about the frescoes and the process to create. Such a lovely experience!
April W — Google review
This is a great place for a quick visit and live viewing of Frescoe style painting. There is a audio recording that is very educational and lasts about 10 mins. Total visit here can be done in 15-20 mins. There are 3 Frescoes at the church: * Mary Great with Child * John the Baptist * Mystery of Faith The visit is free, although donations are highly encouraged.
Mike L — Google review
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church or “Church of the Frescoes” in West Jefferson NC offers an audio narration of the Church’s history and art work by a local artist. Wonderfully preserved in a pastoral setting, it provided my party an uplifting message and a break after a day of touring shops in town.
Ron M — Google review
I visited St. Marys after Holy Trinity, and I feel like that is a good order. The recording here is maybe 15 minutes? It has a delay, so be patient. Parking wasn't clear, but I think you should go around and park in the back lot and walk up unless you find the stairs difficult. There is only a community room downstairs, so no need to explore downstairs. When I was there the barrier to the main fresco was open, but an alarm did sound, so don't cross into that area.
Jessie C — Google review
Very humbling and beautiful. A little white church with lovely stain glass windows. The frescos were lovely. The depiction of God looking down on his son was a different interpretation of the crucifixion which felt comforting
Heather H — Google review
Beautifully maintained and historically preserved Episcopal church featuring the fresco artistry of Ben Long. Well done automated audio presentation.
Roger H — Google review
Beautiful frescoes and stained glass. We sat and took in each work of art as the audio history described each in detail. Free to visit, donation box available.

Wow, this was my first visit and it did not disappoint. Amazing views on the drive up the mountain and a well-maintained trail system and picnic areas at the summit.

Nice place to hike and get a great view from overlooks. Only porta potties are available at the Summit parking lot at this time. But the ranger station has restrooms. The summit does not have a great of you as from the last overlook area.
Junko G — Google review
Beautiful lookouts on the road and on the hikes. The Rhododendron and Lost Province trails were moderately easy.

Grayson Highlands State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Mountain park known for bouldering, scenic hiking & horse trails & a resident herd of wild ponies.
The wild ponies at Grayson Highlands State Park were absolutely worth the hike! 🐴 The views throughout the park are breathtaking—rolling mountains, open balds, and endless skies. 😍⛰️ If you go, park at Massie Gap and take the Rhododendron Trail. It’s a beautiful, moderate hike and you’re very likely to see the ponies grazing along the way. Truly a one‑of‑a‑kind experience and a must‑visit spot in Virginia!
B B — Google review
Had a great day at Grayson Highlands today. Headed out on Rhododendron Trail and up to a part of the AT. First saw ponies on the AT portion. 4 grazing there. Then on the way back down there were more! Maybe 10 - 12 ponies - just hanging out living their best lives. It was a beautiful September afternoon in the mountains. Great seeing parents out in nature with their kiddos too. Highly recommend.
Ron H — Google review
Grayson Highlands State Park is one of the best State Parks that I have ever been to. Please come here to camp, stay in a Yurt and or spend the day walking along the trails. The historic wild ponies are here as a reminder of the uniqueness of the area. It is an experience that you may never forget.
David L — Google review
Incredible location for day hiking or more! Have always heard the rumor about the highland wild ponies and was pleased to have met a few on our hikes! We hiked the Twin Pinnacle Trail, Rodadendron Trail to Horse Trail North (this trail had ponies), and the Cabin Creek Trail to the waterfall. Beautiful views and honestly one of the most stunning spacious areas I've been to recently. The Horse Trail North was my favorite and pictures cannot capture the immense beauty.
Brian R — Google review
Saw the docile ponies twice at Massie Gap. Walk up rhododendron trail to the AT. Beautiful views ups there! Then lucked out and saw more ponies later in the day when I went to the parking lot to use the toilet I spotted ponies right at the start of the trail! The Twin Pinnacles Trail, at the Visitors Center, was great. Pretty easy with one particularly great view. I went the first week of October and was suprised to see the massive parking lots 95percent empty! Fall foliage! It boggles the mind that there isnt an outdoors bathroom at the Visitors Center. The parking lots there had to hold hundreds and hundreds of cars. There was a sign at the visitor center saying the bathroom was out of order and directed you to drive to a couple other places with vault toilets! I walked a little bit of listening Rock Trail which is at the overlook by The visitor Center. You access it by the rock steps on a big boulder that's to the right of the overlook. Beautiful trail but rocky with ups and downs.
Karen S — Google review
Wonderful place to escape to nature. Great staff, interesting visitor center and gift shop. Twin Pinnacles is an easy hike with stunning views, and Massie Gap leads to Wilburn Ridge where there are massive rock outcroppings and the wild ponies. I got the feeling that I was on top of the world!
Rick M — Google review
We had a wonderful time hiking here. Very clean park, friendly staff. Clean restrooms available throughout the park. Some of the maps should be updated, especially over near Pinnacles. Overall, a great day with beautiful views!
Brandi W — Google review
This is such a wonderful state park! EVERY park rangers we met was so kind and helpful. The trails were all fairly well maintained and easy to find/navigate. Our favorite trail was Wilson Creek, but Twin Pinnacles was second. Well worth the trip down (especially if you get to see the ponies!)

Hungry Mother State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
This mountain woodland park comprises a 108-acre lake for boating & fishing, plus camping & cabins.
We were putting together a last-minute July camping trip and we remembered Hungry Mother from our time in Marion during our hike of the Appalachian Trail. I did more research and it seemed like a really nice place to spend some time, so we went online to try to find a campsite. Weirdly, the entire Creekside campground was open for the time we wanted to come. I ended up calling the park and they told me it was my lucky day, that a family reunion had booked the whole campground and just cancelled, and I wanted Site 19! We booked it and were so glad we did. The hosts were so great, and the facilities were clean and worked well. Laundry onsite for like $1.50 for washer and same for dryer Creekside Campground is awesome, but it's not for big rigs. They have another campground called Burson that will handle those, though, and some of the sites there have sewer if that's important to you. But Creekside is super cool, shaded, right on the creek, and you can walk to the beach, the trails, etc. Dump station is at the Visitor's Center on your way out. We would go hike in the morning, then sit and watch the three ducks that came every afternoon to the creek (and slip on the rocks, which was hilarious). There were deer in the morning in the meadow across the creek. If you're tenting, Royal Oaks looked really great. No water or electric, so you'd have to plan for that, but there are bathrooms/showers. We hiked Molly's Knob once during the day with our dog and then at sunset without her. We hiked the Lake Loop, but didn't get to the CCC and I think at least one more hike, so we left some on the table to come back! We rented kayaks one day and that was really fun and a way to cool off in the heat. Sunset at Molly's Knob was amazing (don't do it if you don't have headlamps and some experience night hiking). You're minutes from Marion, and we went downtown and hit all the spots from our AT hike. It's close to Mount Rogers and lots of other great hiking spots too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
Laurel E — Google review
I was there for only a few hours at my husband's company picnic. It seems like a very nice park. Trails for hiking. Water toys to rent - canoes, kayaks (single, double or fishing) paddle boards, pedal boats, hydro bikes. Great spots to have a family picnic, some very large shelters with picnic tables, grills available. Rest rooms, building with kitchen area to rent for functions. I noted signs for geocaching. I'm sure I'm forgetting some things. I will be back to play and explore some more! 😊
Norma M — Google review
Hungry Mother State Park is a beautiful and well-maintained destination for a relaxing getaway. My family and I camped here for a long weekend and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The fall foliage was stunning, creating a picturesque backdrop throughout the park. The facilities and campsites were clean, and the atmosphere was peaceful and quiet—perfect for a family retreat. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy nature and unwind.
Casey — Google review
Is Royal Oak campground new? It was the cleanest state park we've been to this year. The bathrooms were spotless, clean, and well shocked. The tent platforms were massive! We walked the lake loop trail and included the CCC Trail hike, which was beautiful and well maintained. Lake was pristine, and we went swimming with our dogs. Had we had more time, we would have rented kayaks and did a lake day. Saw lots of people out, paddling and fishing. The rangers at the Information/Discovery center were informative, knowledgeable, and great to talk to. You can buy wood there also for $7 a bundle, which was cheaper than other places around. The center sells awesome stickers, some snacks, and t-shirts. The CCC exhibit was excellent, with tons of pictures and relics. Really enjoyed our stay. Can't wait to visit again.
Ashleybrahosky — Google review
This is a unique state park in Virginia. The park has a beautiful Lake that offers recreational opportunities for electric boaters, paddleboarders, and kayakers. They also have a swimming area for families with very soft beach sand for kids to make sand castles or wherever their imagination takes them! Fishing opportunities are great. Park also offers hiking trails and several campgrounds for tent camping or RV camping with bathrooms, showers, and electric hookups. Camp sites have picnic tables and fire rings.
Syrus W — Google review
we stayed at the tent only platforms in royal oak campground. very cute and unique stay. make sure your tent and fly don’t need to be staked in order to stay up! you get a free day of swimming at the beach for each day you camp. the swimming area is a short drive or walk away from the royal oak campground. the swimming area was quite small and they do not allow swimming outside of the marked off area which is really disappointing. when we went swimming a day camp of maybe 60-70 children showed up and took up pretty much the whole swimming area so it would have been nice to not all be corralled in a small area together, especially for my group of competent adult swimmers who just wanted to float in our floaties! bathrooms and shower areas at the royal oak campground were standard— no complaints. you must check in at the park office on the road before you pull into the swim area/campground area before you can actually check into your site—the ranger station closer to the beach and campgrounds are not where you check in. all the rangers and camp hosts we interacted with were nothing but pleasant!
Cal B — Google review
Great location and plenty to do there with great hiking trails and a beautiful lake. I’ve taken my scout troop there three times now. You’re in close proximity to the Virginia creeper trail as well.

Big Walker Lookout

Sights & Landmarks
Bird watching area
Old-timey country store with a steel viewing tower for panoramas of mountain peaks in 5 states.
A little off the beaten path, but worth it. It cost 8 dollars to climb the tower. It will give you a little workout, but not too challenging. The view from the top is stunning. When at the top the tower it did feel as if it had a little sway to it. The country store has lots of items to remind you of your trip. They also serve some food and ice cream.
Charles A — Google review
Very cool scenic lookout. To climb the tower, go into the country store and pay the $8 per person to climb up. I thought the price was reasonable. The views were breathtaking. We were visiting the area on a motorcycle trip and stopped in right as they opened at 10 am on a weekday. We were the only people there at the time, but there were some others arriving as we left. For those on motorcycles, just know the parking lot is mainly loose gravel so be careful as you pull in/out. The woman inside the store was pleasant and told us a little bit about the area. She did mention that they have bands come in and play live music on some afternoons and it can get pretty busy during those times. There are some souvenirs you can purchase, and I saw they sold fudge and some other food items. Overall, a wonderful view and I would do it again!
Rachel B — Google review
Keith was working when we entered the gift shop to purchase tickets. He was very helpful. We had to wait 15 minutes to go up the tower because of a lightning strike. Keith told us we'd be able to see 4 different states from the top of the observation tower. The tower is 10 stories high, incredibly rickety, & absolutely terrified my daughter & myself. Lol. We sat on the floor of the observation level rather than stand because we could see that the wire was in need of repair & didn't want to get too close to the edge. It swayed quiet a bit, but it needs to for safety. Even though it scared me, it is definitely worth walking all the way up to see! Once we made our way back down, Keith sat outside on the porch & talked with us for a while. He said they close at 6pm, but if there are still people there, they don't kick them out. He was so kind & knowledgeable. This is a must see if you're near Big Walker Mountain! We loved it.

Wonderful spot to come and take in the view. Reason price to walk up the tower and across the bridge. The store is very nice with a lot of cute stuff. Staff is friendly and very helpful. Location is about 20 min off of rt 81. If you are passing by take a little detour and check it out.
Elizabeth — Google review
Staff was so friendly sounds silly but my hot dog was amazing LOL the view is beyond breathtaking I did not climb the tower it's just not my thing but everything about this place is just awesome including the gift shop and merchandise! Also if you've never done the trail of the Dragon this is a great place to stop along your way!
Andrea A — Google review
Well worth the detour off the interstate to visit. 201 steps to the top, good height and was not too difficult for me. Tower did sway a bit, which added to the excitement. Tasty ice cream and country store on site.
Rita A — Google review
I try and take ppl who are not from here to this place! It is a beautiful drive and the lookout is beautiful. They have some really cute handmade items in the store and the ice cream(milkshakes) are awesome!! Homemade fudge is good too!! Often they have live music and story tellers!!
Jonnie B — Google review
Gorgeous views, great place to stretch your legs on a long journey (like we were doing). There’s a nice gift shop with ice cream, too. On a clear day you’ll be able to see 5 states from the top of the lookout tower, which has 200 steps to get to the top.

Modest family home of a former 1st lady, with historic period furnishings & memorabilia.
We really enjoyed our visit to this small museum that honors this US First Lady who grew up in this very building (upstairs with an abundance of family.) The opening video was very well done, and our guide was very knowledgeable and kind. They have more they want to do, but what they have done so far is enlightening! Exhibits include timeline of her life and a genealogy showing her direct descendance from Pocahontas.

This museum was a pleasant surprise on our visit to Wytheville. The film on the life of Edith Wilson was interesting, especially her family lineage to many notable Virginians. Lots of artifacts and very knowledgeable staff made for a very interesting visit. Highly recommended!

This is a must see stop! This is a charming, fascinating and highly informative little museum tucked on Main Street in downtown Wytheville. Farron Smith, the curator (who along with her husband created and run the site and the hotel across the street) was gracious and gave us a private and amazing tour of the museum. The building, the birthplace and home to Edith Bolling Wilson, the second wife of Woodrow Wilson, has on display furniture, family memorabilia and photos. It also has a small but wonderful gift shop dedicated to the late First Lady who visited the building in 1960. After watching a brief but moving video of the life of Mrs. Wilson, we shown the private rooms (not yet fully restored) above the mesuem where the Bolling Family lived. This museum is a gem and well worth seeing (and no admission charge).😊

Cool little museum, it's got a lot of information packed in it. It covers her entire life, with a lot of stuff from her time at the White House. The gift shop was very impressive, I got a couple really cool cookbooks and a shirt. The whole family thought the place was interesting.

Live folk & country music at an open-air theater in mountain foothills with nearby hiking trails.
A true gem for music lovers. Amazing museum which highlights the rich music history of the Appalachians. The weekly summer concert series is not to be missed. Wonderful live music, outdoors on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Bring lawn chairs and a cooler and enjoy amazing music. The staff is so friendly it is a true feel good place.

What a wonderful stop along the Blue Ridge Parkway! We spent a few hours here and loved every moment. We brought a picnic and made use of the picnic tables for lunch—a perfect way to enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery before heading inside. The museum on site is small but so well done, telling the story of Appalachian music with videos, exhibits, and interactive displays. Afterward, we enjoyed the live music in the breezeway—local musicians playing bluegrass and old‑time tunes, which gave the place such an authentic and welcoming atmosphere. The staff was friendly, the grounds are beautiful, and it’s a great mix of music, culture, and nature. If you’re driving the Blue Ridge Parkway, definitely make time to stop here.

This was a beautiful place to visit. The music was great and my 3 year old daughter had a blast. She danced her heart away. Was a very clean place. Inside has a great display and history of bluegrass music. The people inside were very nice. If you are in the area, I suggest you stop by.

Very nice Music center in the Blue Ridge mountains! It's free to enjoy the museum and a variety of activities, including libe music on certain days. Staff is very friendly. You really can get submerged into the history of Bluegrass and other music that originated in the area. Very educational and a nice spot to stop while exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains!

Nice little visitors center with mini museum off the beaten path of the blue ridge parkway. Nice gift shop, clean bathrooms. Friendly rangers and access to some walking trails as well. Sometimes has live music events. There’s an amphitheater a short walk from the man visitors center.

My family stumbled upon this gem while driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway. They play music from 12:00-3:00...we arrived just in time to hear two songs just before they were done. Beautiful mountain music! 💞They also have a small museum and gift shop with magnets, mugs, shirts and sweatshirts.

New River Trail State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
This 57-mile-long park with a trail for hiking, biking & horseback riding, plus fishing & camping.
Beautiful park that is one long bike/walking trail along the river. It was so peaceful yet captivating. The sights were breathtaking, the smells were calming, and the trails were perfect for a long bike ride. They had resting places and bathrooms every few miles along the trail. The miles are well marked and there are many maps to follow. At mile mark 24 they had a gift shop and a camp ground. There were other things along the trail, but we didn't check them out.
Spencer T — Google review
Accessing the trail close to the river,(to more quickly reach the trestle bridge)is a bit tricky, but doable if you poke around to find a parking spot 😉Since I was only passing through on I-81, getting to hike on THAT SECTION (JUST outside of Draper) was my goal! But whether you do more of the trail or, like me, just a section, A stunning prize awaits you for your efforts: an incredible view! Solo traveler and enjoyed EVERY STEP🙌🏻THANK THE LORD FOR THE BEAUTY he generously gives us!
Clark L — Google review
Gorgeous Trail, pretty much flat and beautiful views of the river and countryside. The railroad thru truss and trestle bridges are exciting to cross. Bring $7 for parking and at least $20 if you need to rent a bike which by the way they have more than enough. The trail is very long so unless you are a seasoned biker you'll have to do it in chunks. So far I've got everything North of Foster Falls done, looking forward to the southern end before it gets too cold.
J M — Google review
Parked at foster falls. Me and my girlfriend and I had a great time riding around on our e bikes. We rode 10 or so miles out in one direction and 10 back so about 20 or so miles. Also went off on a few side quests to explore other parts. It's worth the fee to park for sure. It's a pretty smooth path for bikes not too hilly. You could basically ride any kind of bike on it. Was worried because my gf has an e bike with no suspension, but she was fine with it.
Chris P — Google review
Nice park. $7 park fee. They converted an old railroad into a 57 mile trail. Its not paved but its flat. It runs along the river. You can rent bikes and kayaks.

Very scenic and peaceful. We bicycled a few miles starting in Galax. The trail is very well maintained. There is a $7 fee to use the trail.

The Andy Griffith Museum, located in Mount Airy, NC, is a 2,500-square-foot space dedicated to the life and career of the late actor Andy Griffith. Founded by his lifelong friend Emmett Forrest, the museum boasts the world's largest collection of Griffith memorabilia. Visitors can explore items from The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock sets as well as personal pieces like a rocking chair made by Griffith's father.
Walked in at 1 pm on a Monday. I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised with how beautifully laid out the museum was. Timelines and mentions of local Mount Airy are found throughout and how Andy paid homage to where he came from. I learned a lot about his life outside of the Andy Griffith show and enjoyed actual props from the show but samples of his stand-up comedic work as well. It was pouring rain so I wasn't able to stroll around and enjoy the other exhibits but was able to get a quick shot of the statue out front. Looking forward to coming back one day.

We were staying nearby so of course we had to visit! We just love his show and enjoyed seeing all the memorable at the museum. We even managed to snap our pics with the statue out front. Worth a visit if you are fans of the show.

A fun stop. Spent about an hour. Learned a lot I didn't know about the legend that is Andy Griffith. Ticket price was a little steep considering the size of the attraction. Wouldn't return, but glad we went on our way through Mt. Airy.

4 stars really. Has some cool Andy stuff not just from the show either, movies and all. I purposely didn't take pictures of some of the neatest things. Of course that's my opinion. Kinda small but entry is only $10 & crammed full of stuff. Loved the clothes etc .

Located in historic downtown Mount Airy, the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History offers a fascinating glimpse into the cultural and historical heritage of the region. The museum features exhibits that depict life in the back country, showcasing early settlement and local heroes. Visitors can explore permanent and rotating exhibits, attend special events, and access a research library.
It is a great museum giving the history of the region around Mt Airy. The displays are high quality, engaging, and give a historical beakdown of many of the events and people that influenced and drove change and life in the region. I highly recommend visiting the museum next time you visit, it is well worth the price of admission. This museum is exceptional, but to find such an advanced museum in a relatively small town like Mt Airy was a pleasant surprise.

Good Museum, great price. For only $6 it's 4 floors of history. The place is under construction in places so it was a little hard to navigate, but once completed I'm sure it will be great. Loved the observatory, but we almost missed it. You are given a map, but signage inside could be a little better. Overall, we had a great time and well worth the admission.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Floyd’s City Barber Shop, located at 129 N Main St, Mount Airy, NC 27030, has been a beloved establishment since its founding in 1929. It is still a fully operational barber shop and welcomes visitors to experience the nostalgia of sitting in the same chair once frequented by Andy Griffith. The shop is adorned with original pieces, artwork, photos, and memorabilia that capture the essence of its rich history. Visitors can also schedule appointments for services.
This by far was my favorite stop in Mt. Airy. The photos on the wall from throughout the years says a lot. Getting to see the antique barber chairs was amazing and meeting Floyd's grandson. He is an awesome man and educator. My son got one of the best haircuts he's ever gotten at Floyd's. So thankful for visiting and the experience. We also bought some merchandise while here that was very reasonably priced.

My husband and I were at Mount Airy over the weekend and this little town is the cutest we adored it so much. We stepped in Floyds barber shop. The owner was so nice and we loved all the pictures they had up. And the old equipment as well :)

Awesome, Bill is such a wonderful southern Gentleman. Easy going and has a lot of stories especially about his dad Floyd.
Randy S — Google review
I want to thank Floyd’s City Barbershop for their many decades of service to Mount Airy and for being such a special part of Mayberry history. A big thank you also to Bill Hiatt for carrying on his father Russell Hiatt’s legacy and keeping the doors open all those years so fans from around the world could experience the magic of Floyd’s. While the original Floyd’s is now closed and a re-creation of the show Floyd’s is reopening in its place, the original barber chairs that Andy Griffith sat in, along with other memorabilia, are now located at my shop—Justin’s Barbershop in Smiths Station, Alabama. I count it a blessing to safeguard these historic pieces and share them with the community so that the Mayberry legacy Russell created in his shop continues to live on. Floyd’s ( Russell Hiatt’s and Bill Hiatt’s legacy) will always be remembered as a landmark of smiles, memories, and tradition, and I am grateful for the many years the relics of the original Floyd’s and atmosphere that was created brought joy to those around the world.

When we were on Main Street in Mt Airy (Mayberry) I had the opportunity to get my hair cut at Floyd’s Barber Shop and in the same chair Andy used to sit in. As someone that grew up watching Andy Griffith this is one of those bucket list things I can check off. What an awesome experience. If you’re ever in the area at least stop by and enjoy the nostalgia of it all.

You should definitely step in if on Main Street in Mt. AIRY. there are so many pictures, including historic photos of men that played the part of Floyd the barber. It is set up just like the barber shop from the Andy Griffith show. You can even get a haircut. Tourists are welcome!

Claytor Lake State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Park encompassing a scenic 4,500-acre lake offering swimming, boating, fishing & cabin lodging.
Claytor Lake State Park is one of my favorite spots for a relaxing outdoor escape in Virginia. The lake itself is absolutely beautiful—perfect for boating, kayaking, and especially fishing. I spent a quiet morning casting from the shore and saw several others out on boats enjoying the calm water. The beach area is great too, with a designated swimming zone that’s ideal for families. The hiking trails are well-marked and not too strenuous, making them perfect for a leisurely stroll or a short hike through the woods. I took the Lakeview Trail and was rewarded with some great views of the water and surrounding hills. Camping here is a pleasure. The sites are spacious and clean, with easy access to restrooms and showers that are better maintained than many other parks I’ve visited. There are also cabins and lodges if you prefer a more comfortable stay. What really stood out to me was the peaceful atmosphere. Even when the park was busy, it never felt overcrowded. It’s a great place to unplug and enjoy nature, whether you’re with friends, family, or solo. It struck the perfect balance between relaxation and recreation—I’ll definitely be back

This is a spectacular Park and Campground! Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Super clean, mostly shaded spots. Ours was a drive through, but there are many you can back your trailer into. Many of the spots had tents. The bath/showers were utterly spotless, as was our campsite. The girls enjoyed the wide pristine beaches and roped off swim area with life guards. There is a playground next to the beach as well as pavilions for covered meals or shelter from rain. There's also a gift shop which we didn't visit. The park has many clean trails around the point, mostly easy with one marked as moderate. We easily booked this via the state park website, that included the details we needed to select our spot. Besides the huge lake, this gorgeous campground is near the Blueridge Parkway and caverns. The girls were excited to see lightening bugs for their first time and we had a deer that came out of the trail right next to our campsite!

Very enjoyable camping experience. I was in Camp section C with hosts Renee and Kenny and their little dog Cody (apologies if I misremembered the names). They were very friendly and accommodating & most helpful. It was nice having showers as well as a wash station for dirty dishes. I was motorcycle camping and Kenny brought over a bundle of wood with some starter for me. I wished I could have stayed longer but I was through camping heading north. Very Serene setting and very affordable. It was very easy to book online and all of the information materials were waiting for me at my site.

This park was beautiful! Our RV site, D26, was level & spacious with water & electricity. The area is treed & has just enough sun & sky to enjoy the warmth of the day or the stars at night. The park is clean & access to the lake is close. The lake itself is gorgeous with a lovely, good-sized, sandy beach marked off for swimming. We only stayed one night & we wished we had stayed much longer, mostly for the tranquility & to be able to swim in the lake (which was probably about 70-75 degrees). I highly recommend this park!

This is a beautiful park. We just went to walk around after dinner. It's peaceful and the lake was calm; no crazy boating theatrics to watch. Met a few people walking their dogs. It looks like a great place to stay with enough room to roam. Or a nice place for a weekend picnic... They have a few gazebos at the lakes edge complete with tables and grill. (May have to reserve these.)

This place seems to be a fine place to camp, launch boats, picnic, and even have a wedding. Cool spot is that this was also the location of some pretty prominent locals of the way back past. Plenty of covered eating and a cool little playground makes this place a gem. It is a 7 dollars a car just to make entry into the park.
Malcolm G — Google review
Great campground. Fabulous state park. Well maintained roads and trails. The lake has so much history. This place is amazing! The water is crystal clear. The beach is beautiful. The cabins are amazing. I can't wait to come back. This would be a great place for a family reunion. It was nice to visit in September when there were less people. The sunsets on the lake were stunning. We went bike riding on the trails and saw hundreds of deer. We also went kayaking in the morning and were amazed by the rock formations against the lake. So astounding! What a hidden gem. So glad we found it even though we were only able to stay one night at the campground on our way south. Really cool history here with a historic house, markers and signs explaining the history and an even cooler interactive historic website.
Maria D — Google review
Beautiful campground, well thought out, and very well maintained. My dad is disabled and we were given a very nice spot with easy access to bath house, garbage, and water. Didn't get to see much as we were just stopping on our way through but I think the lake is pretty nice as well

Hiking Trails
Cascade Falls Trailhead offers a captivating 4-mile hike leading to a stunning 69-ft. waterfall. The trail features rocky streams and a picturesque creekside path, making it worth the two-hour drive to reach. Visitors can enjoy the breathtaking sight of the frozen waterfall during winter, with precautions such as wearing yaktrax for traction on slick surfaces. A $3 parking pass is available at the Forest Service kiosk near the entrance.
This is a hike I’ve wanted to do a few years. Moderate beautiful 4 mile hike. Public bathrooms. $3 basically to park. Try to get there early for parking. If you can wait a bit I am sure a spot will open. Don’t be disrespectful and park near the bathrooms or spots you shouldn’t. Dogs are allowed. There is an upper and lower level to hike. I took the upper level. Beautiful scenery along the way of the forest, boulders, waterway and bridges. Many places to stop along the way and relax. As you get closer to the falls you are basically climbing on rocks and boulders. Great hike for the whole family. I got caught in a 30 minute downpour yesterday and nothing I could do but continue to walk in it. Bring hiking boots. Your shoes will get ruined. Too many folks wearing all white sneakers. Please be respectful and leave no traces. Such as trash, shoes and just being generally disrespectful to Mother Nature

Beautiful beautiful place!!! If you like hiking and the outdoors, this place is for you! Very scenic on the walk up to the falls. I suggest wearing good hiking shoes with good grip, water, snacks, toilet paper, and a flashlight if you plan on staying after dark.

There is two trails. Upper and lower trail. Both are 1 mile. Take the lower trail while going to the falls and enjoy the scenic beauty. Upper trail does not offer this scenic beauty but it's a good hike. The beauty of the fall is so mesmerizing. Be cautious if you want to swim. Swimming is not advisable.
Sandip D — Google review
The Cascade Falls Trail, located in the Jefferson National Forest near Pembroke, is an absolute must-do for any nature lover in Virginia. It's a fantastic 4-mile loop (round-trip) that perfectly balances accessibility with breathtaking natural beauty. The Trail Options: You can choose your adventure with two main paths forming the loop: The Lower Trail: This is the more popular and highly scenic route. It closely follows the Little Stony Creek, offering constant views of smaller cascades, rapids, and beautiful moss-covered boulders. It features stone steps, wooden walkways, and bridges that make you feel truly immersed in the gorge. The Upper Trail: Generally wider and less rocky, this trail offers a more continuous, gentle climb through the forest above the creek, providing occasional aerial views. Many hikers recommend taking the Lower Trail up to the falls for the best views and the Upper Trail back for an easier descent.
Kurtis V — Google review
Great destination for a summer afternoon! The trails are well marked. The lower trail offers excellent opportunities for photographers from the beginning of the trail to the waterfall. Steps and grades can be tricky. So, sturdy shoes should be worn.
Jim B — Google review
Cascade Falls National Recreation Trail is a spectacular destination for all. Even with relatively low water levels there are a lot of swimming holes for young and old alike. The 2 mile hike on the lower trail to the falls is a feat of trail construction creating a perfect foot path. You can also go an additional .7 mile to the Upper Cascade Falls. You could also trek to the rim of the gorge for an overlook (which I did not do).
Dan J — Google review
I am rarely speechless, but coming around the corner the giant boulder to an opening with the waterfall in the background was awe inspiring. The trails were incredible and offered different skill & ability levels. My only complaint is the graffiti and discarded trash. I'm not blaming the park system, especially considering the government shutdown. The blame holy goes to the person who tossed the coke bottle, fizzy water can, potato chip bag, etc. on the ground. Otherwise this place is Paradise!
Ann A — Google review
Cascade Falls in Pembroke is an excellent destination with stunning nature and a perfect finish at the beautiful waterfall. The trails are well-maintained and clearly marked. The route offers a lower path that ranges from moderate to strenuous, and an upper path that is easy. If you are a confident hiker, the lower path to the falls and the upper path on the way back is recommended. If mobility is limited, the upper path is the better choice. We completed the 4-mile loop in three hours, including a break at the waterfall. Our children, aged 5 and 8, managed the lower path without issues. Highly recommended.

Chateau Morrisette Winery is a charming spot nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The winery boasts a swish tasting room where visitors can sample their signature wines like the Black Dog dry red and Dog Blue blend. The on-site restaurant serves delectable American cuisine, from cheese and charcuterie plates to gourmet burgers and upscale dinner options. What's more, this pet-friendly winery welcomes dogs and even features them on their wine labels.
We went here today for our 27th anniversary. It was the best meal out we have ever had. The food and wine were fantastic but what made the evening perfect were the people who took care of us. Our server Robert was kind, considerate, and very helpful. The young person who checked us in offered us a glass of wine while we waited and was also very kind. They set us by a bay window so we could watch the sunset and mist roll over the mountains and Robert offered to take our picture! We drove 90 minutes from our place and the drive was worth it. You won’t regret your decision to eat here!

We enjoyed all the wines and appreciated the detailed notes about each one. I particularly recommend their dry reds and you must try their Cabernet Sauvignon. Lots of varied seating inside and they have a good range of snacks.

We had lunch here and wow, what a beautiful place! It feels like you're in another country. My wife had a grilled chicken sandwich and I had a fried chicken sandwich and we paired it with an oaked chardonnay. Everything was wonderful and the staff was terrific! Highly recommend!

Absolutely beautiful winery from the exquisite detail in craftsmanship to selection of wines to pairing with foods. You won't be disappointed . Live music even on occasion

I've been coming to this winery for at least a decade. It never fails to impress. I love the wines. The people are so welcoming and friendly. The restaurant is a great time as well. Brunch is typically my choice, but their food is delicious regardless of the time. Don't miss out on their December/Winter Wine Sale! Well-behaved dogs are welcome! I always love seeing the ones hanging out in the tasting room/wine shop.

Chateau Morrisette is a must visit to add to your list. Their friendly staff are eager to share their delicious award winning wines with you. I had the most relaxing time catching up with one of my dear friends while there. They had a perfect red for me and my friend enjoyed "the best Sauvignon Blanc she ever had". If you are lucky like we were, Nobel the precious black lab will be there to make you feel right at home. Cheers!

Lovely winery in a beautiful setting. Live music in the courtyard. The tasting room is beautiful and dog friendly! The host dog, Noble, is a stately black Lab who meanders through the space greeting four-legged and two-legged guests. There is even a "tasting bar" of treats for dogs. The wine is good - Archival XII and 2021 Chardonnay were our favorites. No, it's not what you can get in Napa but it's delicious and convenient for those of us on the East Coast. We also had lunch at the restaurant - service was very good, ambiance was great - beautiful views of the surrounding mountains (as you can see from the pictures the day we went wasn't very clear, but it was still pretty). Crab cake appetizer was very good, shrimp and grits were watery. But overall, we love this place and will be back.

i loved the inspiration that Hahn Gardens gave me. I want my backyard to look like this. I want YOUR back yard to look like this🤣🤣 The flowers, vegetables, plants, trees, waterfalls, artwork, and pathways are all amazing and well kept. Im going back for more pictures. #8robinsonstv #mariodeblakrobinson

This garden is stunning & a must see for anyone in the area. The wide variety of different plants and flowers is stunning. I will say the Koi fish pond has gone downhill in the past 3 years. The water looks filthy and their fish population has begun to dwindle. I've also smelled strong chemicals coming out of the sprinklers that spray into the Koi pond.

I had my wedding at the Hahn Horticulture Garden this past weekend and couldn't have been happier. The grounds had a wide variety of locations available for my event; from an indoor tearoom space with large windows, to a outdoor roofed marquise, to a lovely lawn that is perfect for wedding ceremonies, I couldn't have picked a better spot. They offer time the day before for setup and have someone on hand available to help. They have clear and fair requirements for hosting an event there and are very communicative and helpful. I could not have been happier!

This is a beautiful little garden spot. I wish I lived close enough to visit it often to see all the changes throughout the year. Admission is free, no tickets are needed.

This is a small but might garden. We had a tour led by the Director of the Lee Hahn Horticultural Garden. We walked through a Trident Maple forest with native plants, saw the beautiful koi pond and the colorful beds of flowers. Located on the Virginia Tech campus l look forward to seeing how the gardens grow and expand through the years.

I attended VT and have lived in this area for over 30 years, and I had never actually gone into these gardens. They just seemed to occupy so little space, I couldn't imagine that they amounted to much. In fact, they were a surprising delight, despite it being late Fall, and there was more to them than I realized. Absolutely worth a visit, and a great place to chill out. There's flowing water, a pond, some wooded glades, and lots of little nooks and crannies to relax in.

Lane Stadium, the largest stadium in Virginia with a seating capacity of over 65,000, is renowned as the home of the Virginia Tech Hokies football team. Constructed in 1964, this iconic sports venue holds a rich history and has been an integral part of Blacksburg's identity. Even for non-sports enthusiasts, visiting Lane Stadium provides an opportunity to immerse in the vibrant game-day atmosphere and witness the deep-rooted connection between the community and its beloved Hokies.
I drove in from Ohio to see Metallica. Arguably the largest event Virginia Tech has hosted outside of their football games. Not only was the entire event seamless the event staff was phenomenal. It's crazy to think an event of that caliber was so well constructed and organized... Fantastic Job!

This is an awesome place to watch a football game. This was our second game at Lane Stadium, and there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. The fans are very and friendly, and the introduction is the best I have seen. Metallica's "Sandman" booms through the stadium, setting the tone very early. Too cool.

Metallica played Enter Sandman LIVE at the stadium last night, May 7, 2025. Virginia Tech Seismological Observator showed it registered on the Richter Scale. Amazing night! It was our first visit to the school and stadium. Thank you VA tech!

An awesome experience attending the Metallica concert held at Lane stadium. The enthusiasm from the VT fans and Metallica fans is absolutely amazing. The venue was packed but I didn't observe one single issue the entire time with fans. I highly recommend that when the next concert is held there that you attend. You won't be disappointed.

Lane Stadium at Virginia Tech is a true gem in the world of college football! The atmosphere during game days is electric, but nothing compares to the iconic entrance. As the team runs onto the field, the roar of the crowd and the famous "Enter Sandman" blaring through the speakers creates a spine-tingling experience that sends chills down your spine. The passion of the fans is palpable, and the spirit of the Hokies is infectious. The stadium’s design allows for an intimate yet grand setting, where every seat feels close to the action. Whether you’re a die-hard football fan or just there to soak in the experience, Lane Stadium delivers an unforgettable environment. It’s no wonder that so many people claim it has the best entrance in college football! If you ever get the chance to witness a game here, don’t miss it!

Great visit to see the Hokies, win in 2 OT. This would be 5 stars but the seats were not good and and did not let you sit relaxed. I'd rather sit in a bleacher seat than these plastic torture chairs. The atmosphere was amazing throughout the game and watching the students sing Enter Sandman was awesome.
Mark L — Google review
If it wasn't for the Metallica concert going on here, I probably wouldn't have ever visited this stadium. Mason reasons are because I don't follow college football, and I live on the West Coast of the US. But I'm so glad I decided to buy these tickets at the last minute, and came over to visit an old highschool buddy, and we went to this concert together. But aside from Metallica being there, the staff at this place was friendly, the place was well kept, and they even had snipers on the rooftops making sure nothing crazy went down. We met a lot of friendly and interesting people there, and overall our experience was great. Great job Virginia tech on running an awesome show and experience.

Fairy Stone State Park

State park
Nature & Parks
Named for cross-shaped staurolite found here, the forested park has a lake, cabins & hiking trails.
Great cabins. Well appointed, even the original cabins. Heating, a/c, fireplace, kitchen -- all in great shape. Enjoyed kayaking, hiking, and being off-grid. Nice patio and picnic table. Highly recommended!

Fairy Stone State Park is such a beautiful and peaceful place. We really enjoyed our visit here. Right from the entrance, the rangers were incredibly friendly and helpful. One ranger in particular really went out of his way for us we told him we had young kids and weren’t planning to go into the lake that day, and he gave us great directions to the playground area instead. It was exactly what we needed. The playground was perfect for our kids and even had two picnic tables nearby, which worked out great since we packed a picnic lunch. It made everything so easy and relaxing. The area was well maintained and felt very safe and family friendly. There are lots of beautiful walking trails throughout the park. Even though we didn’t hike very far with the kids, the portions we did explore were really nice and scenic. My kids especially enjoyed the fairy stone hunt, they didn’t end up finding any, but they had a blast searching and exploring. Thankfully, the gift shop sells fairy stones, so they were excited to still bring some home as souvenirs.

This is another beautiful Virginia State Park, we've been here several times, have a great time every time! The boat rental here is ready and cheap, for a family you can get a rowboat for an hour for like $20, 4 hours cost me $46 the first time. We never last past an hour. My adult daughters are convinced they know how to paddle, so as we sit there spinning in circles and hollering at each other how to do it, others glide by, giving me pitying looks lol. 😁 It's a good upper body workout and it's fun. The beach is always clean and nice, big enough to always have space for you. The water was perfect temperature, no shocking coldness. The grounds here are gorgeous, tons of shady spots to set up under too. A big playground near the beach, and a couple of pavilions you can rent. The grill here has burgers, dogs, fries, etc, really yummy and not expensive. Ice cream too! The gift shop has a range of things, actual Park gifts to forgotten Beach Toy replacements, the beach stuff is pretty cheap, the cool park stuff, not so cheap. They have camping and cabins here, no hotel.

Dixie Caverns

Dixie Caverns is a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable underground adventure. Open to the public since 1923, this enchanting site features stunning natural formations and a captivating reflecting pool that feels like stepping into another world. The guided tours, lasting about an hour, are both informative and entertaining, led by knowledgeable guides who share fascinating stories about the caverns' history and unique features.
Great cave, great history - but be forewarned - you're in for a workout! This is a one hour tour that is almost all stairs. Do you like stairs? Then you'll love this tour! Ten feet into it the tour guide announces you will be climbing "Jacob's Ladder" - which is an eight story flight of steps. While that's the longest continuous flight of steps in the tour, the rest of it is a series of shorter up/down steps. This is not a cave for mobility challenged people. I reached my exercise goal for the day six minutes into the tour and the tour lasts for an hour! That said, it's a great little cave. The history of the discovery is amazing, and this is the only cave I've been to where you can see an actual earth fault line from below ground, which is amazing. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and the time passed quickly. There was no dead time. I would definitely go again, but I'd do some cardio first!

This place was a neat cavern to explore. The group we were with was small and that made it nice to be able to enjoy what we were looking at and we had time to take plenty of photos. It was a bit warm and humid in the cavern though lol. There was a lot of wet spots and areas where you need to be careful and watch your step. The guide we had did really great with giving us a heads up about where to watch our steps at. Check out this place! It’s pretty cool!

A great place to stop and browse the awesome and eclectic gift shop and antique mall or take a cavern tour into the cool (literally and figuratively). Lots of steps and sometimes slippery floors so dress appropriately. My family really enjoyed the whole experience. Also there's a gas station next door with pretty decent food and drink options.
Jon J — Google review
My recent visit to Dixie Caverns was a fantastic experience! The tour was well worth the $18 admission fee, and though there was no military discount, the value was still excellent. The tour itself was a comfortable length, lasting about 30-45 minutes. The cavern's interior was refreshingly cool, and it was fascinating to learn about its history, especially how it got the name 'Dixie.' It's a truly unique and beautiful natural wonder, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an interesting and educational stop.

The park was easy to find. It is located just off of I 81. There is pavement all the way. Signage is adequate. Check in was self serve. If you don’t have the correct cash, the operator will follow up at the site. The rules are fairly basic. The interior roads are graveled and in good condition. Our site, 59, was a gravel based pull thru that was easily long enough for our Coach and Towed. Services (30 amp, water and sewer only) were to the left side. Distancing is very close for a rural park. Each site has a table and a fire pit. The fire pit was very rough. Just a few stones tossed on the ground. Our site was flat and even. Overall the park was pretty old and rustic but not a bad overnighter We did not use the park included wifi and we could not get the cable TV to work. We did not find any OTA channels. Satellite might be difficult. We did not use the washrooms or showers as they required a code and we did not need them anyway. There are a number of permanents and many were pretty trashy. There are no restaurants or stores within easy walking distance but just a short drive away you can find food, shopping and convenience stores. We found this park to be an okay overnighter. We paid $50.00 per night inc tax and we feel we received poor value. We will not be back.

Dixie Caverns is a cool roadside stop near Roanoke with a fun, guided cave tour full of unique rock formations. The guide was knowledgeable, and the short walk underground stayed a comfy 55°F. Bonus: there’s a quirky gift shop and antique mall on-site. Great stop for families or road-trippers!

This is a great stop! This was our second visit to this cavern! Our tour guide Maren, is excellent! She also led us through the caverns at our last visit! It is a lot of stairs! So plan accordingly! All staff were friendly and there is a neat little antique shop and gift shop to explore!

Nestled in the heart of Downtown Rocky Mount, the Harvester Performance Center is a charming venue that showcases an array of live performances, from folk and country to comedy and rock. With two stages hosting shows multiple nights a week, it’s a hub for music lovers seeking quality entertainment. The atmosphere is casual yet vibrant, making it an inviting spot for both performers and audiences alike.
Best sound I've heard in a really long time! Love this venue! Last night was my first time and I'll be going back tonight! Staff are very friendly and helpful!

One of the absolute best venues to see top name acts in an relaxed smaller theatre. We have seen many shows at The Harvester, and on this date we were there to see Lyle Lovett. Beingba bass player myself, I was thrilled to meet and speak with world famous bassist Leland Sklar. I have met many celebrities over time, but I have never met a friendlier person. Leland was outside the venue strolling around and walked onto the patio where we were waiting for the doors to open. I approached him and asked if I could get a picture with him. His response, " anything you want." We chatted for about 15 minutes uninterrupted, and he treated me like he'd known me all my life. That's the beauty of the Harvester. Many artists are very down-to-earth and accessible. The venue itself has a top quality sound and light system and every show weve seen there has been an excellent experience! The staff is friendly and helpful. An excellent and intimate venue to see top named and up coming acts.

Went to the Harvester first time the other night and I must say it did not disappoint. From the time you walk up you are greeted and welcomed by the staff. The venue is awesome. The seats were comfortable. It is not so big you get "lost" in the crowd. The sound and lighting were amazing. I'm already looking for our next show.

Love The Harvester. It's a small venue, with a hometown feel. The good thing about it being small there's not really any seats that aren't too far away from the stage. They sell sodas, beer and a few snacks. (Not to be harsh I do not recommend the kettle corn it was stale- but since this is a review I'm giving my opinion) you can take a pocketbook in they were recommend just a small one they will look in it. You do have to stand outside and wait in line until the doors actually say they open online so if it's cold or calling for rain make sure you are prepared....

The Virginia Museum of Transportation, located in a historic freight depot, showcases an impressive collection of planes, trains, and automobiles. Visitors can explore the nostalgic exhibits featuring electric and diesel locomotives, antique automobiles and trucks, aviation displays, and vintage steam engines. Notable attractions include the durable Class A locomotive and the unique Class J locomotive. The museum offers interactive exhibits that tell the story of local and national transportation history.
My two sons, 8 and 2, and I spent a very fun afternoon here. You can take the free Star Line Trolly to get there, to add to the transportation experience! From the model sets to the giant real deal engines out back, everyone found something interesting. They especially loved climbing aboard the old caboose and seeing the Harry Potter-esque engines in person. Normally we aren’t gift shop people but it was so reasonably priced that I couldn’t help but support the museum. The older son had a wonderful time building his Lego steam engine later that night and the younger enjoyed playing with it after. We also got them matching tie dye screen-printed shirts that were made in Roanoke. Fun to be able to support local creators with a souvenir they can wear. Highly recommend this museum!
Lindsay Q — Google review
A truly underrated museum for transportation nerds. They featured a sections for buses, cars, trains, planes, and ships. The museum is very immersive and reasonably priced as well. I really loved the train yard the most! They include a variety of exhibits as well as ones that feature underrepresented groups in the field which I really appreciated (women and African American individuals.) My only critique would be that I love to see some more updated or rotating exhibits to keep things fresh.
Abigail A — Google review
Fantastic for trains an transportation enthusiasts! It’s a small museum but they have a lot of exhibits. There’s a car garage with different era cars from model Ts to GM EV1. Lots of train equipment to look at, a train you can sit in inside, train cars to go in. There’s a jet outside and a private plane you can sit in inside. Model ships, a model train. There’s a lot of stuff packed in here. My four year old and 13 year old loved it.

Ever see the movie planes, trains and automobiles? Well that's exactly what the Virginia Museum of Transportation has all under one roof in Roanoke, Virginia. The displays are well done and offer some interactive features. The kids can have a ball getting up close too! Even the gift store was excellent! Made a few purchases. It's a one off for me, but was worth the visit to see the rich history of the railways the Roanoke community has. 4.5 rounding up. I can understand why it's a beloved local attraction.
J H — Google review
Definitely would recommend! The trains did need some work, car selection was great, same go’s for the train section. N&W 611 was getting worked on but we didn’t mind since it keeps her running. I was very happy to see N&W 1218 since he is my favorite part of the museum. Although the lady behind the ticket booth wasn’t very pleasant, we were going to do the behind the scenes work of 611. She didn’t know where we were supposed to go, so we had to figure it out ourselves but we eventually got there. Behind the scenes part was very cool, and we a demonstration on the restoration of N&W 611 and also got to get inside the cab of the 611. Would give more than a five stars if I could!
Dougie C — Google review
I’m from Indiana, and while vacationing in the Roanoke area, I came across this museum, and given my liking for just about everything technology and transportation, this place did not disappoint. I had a fun time here. It’s also nice knowing the history behind different technology and transportation.
Elevator D — Google review
Stopped here with my boys, who absolutely love trains! They loved all of the different trains they got to see and they especially loved that they could actually get inside some of them and pretend to drive them! They happened to be working on the 611 while we were there, so that was neat to see.
N W — Google review
This place was so awesome. As soon as you enter the parking lot, they have a full locomotive cab, or a replica that you can view in full display. Prices are fairly cheap, so thats a plus. When you walk in, there is another full Norfolk Southern locomotive cab on display, that you can walk inside and look at all the controls. Outside, there is a full railyard with a bunch of historic equipment. When we went, N&W 611 was being fixed up, so you couldn’t go past that unless you took the platform and went downstairs at the end. They had everything from ALCO switchers to even A class steam locomotives and GG-1s. They have a very nice gift shop with a very nice selection. Stuff there is on the expensive side, but you are getting what you pay for, and that is quality. The aviation section could be bigger, but it’s okay because of how rare and old that equipment is. The automobile section is very cool, with very vintage cars on display. I also like how they put up barriers to stop people from playing with the parts. I think the highlight of this was probably N&W 1218 on full display, which you can walk inside, but don’t touch anything! Overall, this was a very nice place and exceeded my expectations. Not to mention the friendly staff who are always willing to help you put if you need it. This is also a child friendly spot, so if your kids like trains or cars or any sort of transportation they would have a blast. Not to mention the model train display they have up which you can use, but they are on a timer. Overall, i’d give this place a 5 star for being well decorated, in very nice proximity to downtown, and because of the friendly staff. I would definitely come back here again.

Mill Mountain Star is a 100-foot neon-lit landmark that overlooks the city of Roanoke from the top of Mill Mountain. The mountain is home to a nearly 600-acre wilderness park open to the public for various recreational activities, including two scenic overlooks, the Discovery Center, Mill Mountain Wildflower Garden, a playground, and the Mill Mountain Zoo. With over ten miles of trails and picnic areas, it's an ideal destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Very cool and super unique to Roanoke. The star is truly amazing along with the view is unbelievable. It lights up every night and even changes colors on special holidays. It definitely gets packed so good luck actually being to see the star during the holidays it changes colors.

This place is a wonderful piece if Roanoke's past, present, and future. With a enormous lit up star at the top of Mill Mountain that can be seen easily from across town, to the beautifully crafted overlook which leads way to the so many beautiful lights across the city, it's definitely worth visiting. If you come early in the day you can visit the Mill Mountain Zoo, and by the time you go grab dinner (possibly take out) and come back, if you're returning around the time the sun sets, you're in luck. The views at sunset are amazing and just continues to impress as the day goes on leading to nightfall. From a beautiful sun set to a gorgeous view of so much of the city, and to be free to visit, you just can't go wrong.
Doug S — Google review
We were staying for the night with friends who live nearby and they suggested we visit The Star because of the great view. And they were right about that. It was late dusk when we arrived, and the view over the city was pretty. We would have preferred to go there in daylight so we could see the hills in the background, but it was pleasant enough. My only question is, "Why?" The star may be illuminated at night, but other than that, it's an eyesore that detracts from the natural beauty.
Mark F — Google review
Walking around the trails, wildflowers, and up to the star was really nice. Unfortunately we got there a few minutes after 6:00 and the zoo and the Discovery center were closed and so we're the bathrooms, except for porta-potties. Definitely plan in advance, especially if you want to use the Discovery center or go to the zoo.

An iconic landmark with a breathtaking view. You've got to see it for yourself! It is beautiful any time of day or night until the gates close at 11 pm. Admission is free. If you go at night, be careful not to leave valuables in your car, and also watch for deer on the winding roads to and from the site. There are bathrooms on site, but they are horribly dirty (can only speak for the men's room, but I assume they're all that way).

There’s also plenty of interesting information about the history of the star and its significance to the area, which makes the visit even more meaningful. It’s a great spot to visit during the day or evening, especially if you enjoy scenic views and a touch of local history. Easy to access, well-kept, and perfect for photos definitely worth the stop!

Located in Downtown Roanoke, the Taubman Museum of Art is a leading cultural destination in southwestern Virginia. The museum's modern facility, designed by renowned architect Randall Stout, houses a diverse collection of over 2,200 works focusing on American art. With twelve galleries hosting rotating exhibitions throughout the year, visitors can explore pieces by notable artists such as Norman Rockwell and John Singer Sargent.
This museum is lovely. They are free to the public and also offer a paid exhibit. They won available when we visited was $10 a person the art is varied and the building a work of art on its own! I highly recommend spending some time at Taubman Museum of Art

The Taubman Museum of Art was such a pleasant surprise! The staff was really kind and welcoming. They had two exhibits specifically for kids, and it only cost $5 per person with a family max of $20 which was definitely worth it. The Art Venture area was a hit with our kids! There was so much hands-on and interactive fun for them to enjoy. They were engaged the entire time, and it made for such a fun and creative outing. It’s a great spot for families looking for something a little different to do in Roanoke.

The Taubman is a small, but lovely art museum. Their special exhibitions are always interesting and above average. Their permanent collection has recognizable names (Singer Sargent, Rockwell, Betty Branch, Eakins, etc.), as well as lesser known artists. Admission is free, always. Go...you won't be sorry!

I enjoyed the mix of periods, the lighting and the very managble size for a 90 minute visit before dinner and theatre during our annual autumn visit to Folly Beach.

Really nice exhibit -- especially for a free museum it's really incredible, with a large selection of organized and interesting artwork. Mostly paintings but also some sculpture. There were also some children's activities/exhibits while we were there, though we didn't look at them ourselves. I especially liked this watercolor, which gives a very 3d effect when viewed from a distance.

The Taubman Museum is home to some of the most beautiful and important works of art from Virginia, as well as American artists, spanning from 1800 to the present day. Here, you can see many important art schools and spend a pleasant time viewing the most important works of art, including paintings, and sculptures.

I went here on a date and we loved it! I've lived in Roanoke my whole life and never gone, but I will definitely go back! We enjoyed the Shakespeare Garden exhibit, the ecology exhibit, and the experience art section the most. There's also free general admission, but you do have to leave any drinks up front.

The O. Winston Link Museum in Roanoke, VA is a fascinating destination that showcases the region's cultural heritage and rich history. Located near the Taubman Museum of Art, this museum delves into the area's extensive railway history and its impact on connecting small towns. The museum also features iconic black and white railroad photography from the glory days, offering a unique glimpse into the past.
Charming museum that was once a train station dedicated to one man’s love of the now gone steam engine train where his passion was captured in the impressive grandeur photographs he took from the 1950’s. A master of light and engineering, Ogle spent much of his life documenting one of America’s lasting splendor in the era of the locomotive not just visually, but w audio as well where he released a number of recordings of the sounds of the traveling train through the West Virginian mountains. One can imagine his excitement from the surviving recordings, where you can here the glee he expressed in his voice while riding atop. You are transposed by his artistry to a time when life was simpler but somehow a lot more evolved than where we are today.

First time visitor for Homeschool Days. What a gem! The program director is knowledgeable, energetic, and engaged. The musuem offers a variety of exhibits, both informational and hands-on, including Colonial era clothing for playing dress-up. We could have spent several more hours exploring. Will definitely visit again.

I entered this museum and uncultured swine, and exited quite the fan of Mr. Link. I highly recommend this spot. Almost slept on it myself. Glad I came around. Only wish I had the time to do the Virginia Museum of Transportation as well. Oh well. Next time. Trains are such a wholesome topic/fixation, as I've come to learn. I love hearing people's excitement about them lol..

I was blown away by this place and was much more than I expected. I thought it was going to be an art gallery of the photos but it had so much more. Make sure you start with the film and that tells you exactly how much of an artist he was. This wasn't a guy just taking snapshots of trains. The museum includes letters, his equipment, and much more. You really get a good appreciation for his work. In addition with this housed in an old railroad station, you can walk around and see what the station was like and they have displays on that too. It is a really nice building that was built when people wanted to ride the rails. This is a must while in Roanoke and you can combine the entree with the transportation museum. Highly recommend!

We've visited twice for homeschool field trips. One was a walking tour, to learn about the history of the facilities nearby. Another was inside the museum, to learn about photography perspectives. Both events were informative and fun. The person in charge of these events is very friendly.

As a Rail-fan and Lionel train collector, this museum has it all. I had always thought the N&W 611 was the classiest and finest steam engine ever built, compared to the SP 4449, the Chessie 614, the NYC J1 Hudson. The photography and settings of a bygone era are all here. Take your time to browse and enjoy the collection.
